Abstract
A purification procedure for the Group C phage-associated lysin is described utilizing tetrathionate to protect the enzyme's -SH group(s) from thiol-inactivating agents. A 652-fold purification has been accomplished yielding a solution in which the enzyme activity corresponds to essentially a single band on polyacrylamide gel which accounts for 70% of the total protein in the preparation. A molecular weight of 101,000 and frictional ratio of 1.526 was determined for the lysin utilizing experimentally determined values for its Stokes radius and sedimentation coefficient.

Abstract
Tetrathionate enrichment broth is a complex mixture of salts including iodides and other polythionates, but only thiosulfate (0.0736 m) and tetrathionate (0.0236 m) in combination were toxic for Escherichia coli. Individually, these two salts were not lethal. The lethal action of this thiosulfate-tetrathionate mixture affected only growing cells. A possible relationship between the lethality of the thiosulfate-tetrathionate mixture for a culture and its ability to reduce tetrathionate is suggested.

Abstract
The main products of carbon dioxide-fixation in washed suspensions of Chlorobium thiosulfatophilum are a polyglucose, alpha-ketoglutarate, and alpha-keto-beta-methylvalerate. All of these can be formed by a mechanism involving the reductive carboxylic acid cycle. The reductive pentose phosphate cycle appears to play a quantitatively minor role in carbon dioxide-fixation under these conditions.

Abstract
Abstract
The evidence for “spare-receptors” has been examined in the adrenergic α-receptor system of the rat vas deferens using N-(2-bromoethyl)-N-ethyl-l-naphthylmethylamine (SY.28) and NN-dimethyl-2-phenylethylamine hydrobromides as the antagonist species. It is clearly demonstrated that “spare-receptors” are not present in this tissue and that the observed parallel shift of the dose-response curve of noradrenaline produced by SY.28 is due to a competitive reversible phase of action of the corresponding ethyleneimine species rather than to the presence of “spare-receptors”. Additionally, these experiments have revealed the existence of a significant non-competitive reversible phase of action of SY.28. From radiochemical studies and the observed first order recovery of tissue response following blockade by NN-dimethyl-2-bromo-2-phenylethylamine, it is concluded that the α-receptors in the rat vas deferens are indistinguishable from the α-receptors in the rabbit aorta in their behaviour towards this agent. From these results and those of others, it may be concluded that there is no existing evidence for “spare receptors” in adrenergic α-receptor systems.

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) was analyzed for the occurrence of thionucleotides by in vivo labeling with (35)S and fractionation by methylated albumin kieselguhr column chromatography. Alkaline hydrolysates of tRNA were also examined by column chromatography and paper electrophoresis, and the amino acid-accepting ability of thionucleotide-containing tRNA was tested after iodine oxidation. The results showed that B. subtilis tRNA contains 4-thiouridylate, a second nucleotide with properties similar to 2-thiopyrimidine, and a third unidentified thionucleotide. The amino acid-accepting ability for serine, tyrosine, lysine, and glutamic acid was markedly inhibited after oxidation of the tRNA with iodine, suggesting the presence of thionucleotides in these tRNA species. This inhibition could be reversed by thiosulfate reduction. The iodine treatment totally inactivated all lysine tRNA species, partially inactivated the serine tRNA species, and did not affect the accepting ability for valine. A comparison of tRNA from cells in the log and stationary phases and from spores revealed similar iodine inactivation patterns in all cases. The thionucleotide content in B. subtilis tRNA differed from that in Escherichia coli, both in extent and in distribution. A possible function of the thionucleotides in tRNA is discussed.

Abstract
Cell yields of Rhodopseudomonas palustris grown photoheterotrophically in pyruvate-mineral salts medium were increased by the photooxidation of added thiosulfate. However, thiosulfate had no effect on cell yields of cultures grown aerobically in darkness, although thiosulfate was also oxidized. The presence of thiosulfate increased photosynthetic cell yields on a variety of other organic substrates. Growth of cells in thiosulfate-containing medium, or the addition of thiosulfate to cells grown in thiosulfate-free medium, induced the formation of a thiosulfate-oxidizing system which quantitatively photooxidized thiosulfate to sulfate. R. palustris grew photoautotrophically with thiosulfate as an oxidizable substrate. Large amounts of supplemental bicarbonate carbon were incorporated when cells were grown photosynthetically in pyruvate-thiosulfate medium. Cells harvested after photoautotrophic or photoheterotrophic growth in fumarate-thiosulfate medium fixed (14)CO(2) at an 8- to 10-fold greater rate when provided with thiosulfate. The evolution of (14)CO(2) from pyruvate-1-(14)C during photoassimilation by R. palustris was greatly suppressed by the presence of thiosulfate. The increase in photoheterotrophic cell yields of R. palustris caused by the oxidation of thiosulfate may result from assimilation of substrate carbon which is normally evolved as carbon dioxide.

Abstract
The total adenine nucleotide content of suspensions of Chromatium D averaged 14 nmoles/mg of dry weight. Of this, one-third to one-half was adenosine triphosphate (ATP), even in suspensions incubated in darkness. Illumination with high intensities caused a rise in ATP and a drop mainly in adenosine diphosphate, the new steady state being reached in 5 to 15 sec at room temperature. The dark steady state was re-established 15 to 30 sec after returning the suspensions to darkness. The rates of these changes were little affected by the presence of electron donors or CO(2), though their magnitude was reduced when substrates were added to starved suspensions. At limiting light intensities, complex kinetics characterized the transition from both dark to light and light to dark, and, at lower light intensities, more ATP was produced in suspensions supplemented with electron donors than in starved cells. The results show that photophosphorylation accompanying cyclic electron flow occurred in intact cells, and suggest that noncyclic phosphorylation can also occur.

Abstract
Prophylactic protection against cyanide intoxication in mice can be enhanced by the administration of oxygen, especially when it is used in combination with the conventional cyanide antidotes, sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate. The LD(50) values were compared in groups of mice premedicated with sodium thiosulfate or sodium nitrite, or both, in air and in oxygen. These results indicate that oxygen alone provides only minimal protection. Although oxygen enhances the protective effect of sodium thiosulfate to a minor degree, it does not enhance the protection of sodium nitrite at all; and yet, it potentiates the effectiveness of a combination of these two antagonists against cyanide intoxication.

London, Jack (University of California, Los Angeles), and Sydney C. Rittenberg. Effects of organic matter on the growth of Thiobacillus intermedius. J. Bacteriol. 91:1062-1069. 1966.-Yeast extract, glucose, glutamate, and other organic materials stimulate the rate and extent of growth of Thiobacillus intermedius in thiosulfate broth. Growth did not occur in glucose or glutamate mineral salts medium in the absence of thiosulfate, although a stable variant was obtained which grows on yeast extract alone. Cells harvested from media supplemented with organic matter have a reduced rate of thiosulfate oxidation (20 to 30% of autotrophic), oxidize the organic supplement, and have an additive rate of oxidation in the presence of both the organic substrate and thiosulfate. Carboxydismutase synthesis is repressed, and the incorporation of bicarbonate carbon into cell material is almost completely eliminated by the presence of organic matter in the growth medium. It is concluded that the availability of organic matter eliminates the autotrophic assimilatory mechanisms of T. intermedius but not its autotrophic energy-generating system. The data are discussed in relation to the existence of "obligate" chemoautotrophic bacteria.
