Abstract
Industrial wastewater, often characterized by its proximity to neutral pH, presents a promising opportunity for fungal utilization despite the prevalent preference of fungi for acidic conditions. This review addresses this discrepancy, highlighting the potential of certain industrial wastewaters, particularly those with low pH levels, for fungal biorefinery. Additionally, the economic implications of biomass recovery and compound separation, factors that require explicit were emphasized. Through an in-depth analysis of various industrial sectors, including food processing, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and paper-pulp, this study explores how filamentous fungi can effectively harness the nutrient-rich content of wastewaters to produce valuable resources. The pivotal role of ligninolytic enzymes synthesized by fungi in wastewater purification is examined, as well as their ability to absorb metal contaminants. Furthermore, the diverse benefits of fungal biorefinery are underscored, including the production of protein-rich single-cell protein, biolipids, enzymes, and organic acids, which not only enhance environmental sustainability but also foster economic growth. Finally, the challenges associated with scaling up fungal biorefinery processes for wastewater treatment are critically evaluated, providing valuable insights for future research and industrial implementation. This comprehensive analysis aims to elucidate the potential of fungal biorefinery in addressing industrial wastewater challenges while promoting sustainable resource utilization.

Abstract
Industrial wastewater discharge, tainted with hazardous substances, including dyes like methylene blue (MB) from the textile sector, further emphasizes the need for water treatment to produce safe drinking water. This study explores the potential of olive mill solid waste, an abundant and cost-effective agricultural waste in Mediterranean regions, to yield high-quality activated carbon (AC) with zinc chloride activation for MB adsorption. The activation process, carried out at a modest temperature of 500 °C without the need for an inert atmosphere, resulted in AC with remarkable characteristics, boasting a substantial surface area of 1184 cm2·g-1 and a total pore volume of 0.824 cm3·g-1. Extensive characterization of the AC was carried out through a large range of surface techniques. The pH of the solution had minimal influence on MB adsorption, the maximum removal was 95%, which was under slightly acidic pH conditions (5.8), and the adsorbent dose was 0.4 g·L-1 for a 50 mg·L-1 MB concentration. Equilibrium data pertaining to MB adsorption were subjected to fitting with different models, namely Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin. Notably, the Langmuir model exhibited the best fit, revealing a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 500 mg·g-1 at 25 °C, and the adsorption kinetics closely followed a pseudo-second-order model.

Abstract
Byproducts and wastes from the food processing industry represent an important group of wastes generated annually in large quantities. It is important to note that the amount of this waste will increase with industrialization, and effective solutions must be found urgently. Many wastes that cause environmental pollution are evaluated by their low-tech conversion into products with little economic value, such as animal feed and fertilizer. Therefore, the evaluation of food processing waste using effective recycling techniques has become an interesting subject with increasing population, ongoing biotechnological studies, and advances in technology. The conversion of food waste into biotechnological products via fermentation is a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and economical method in line with the principles of green chemistry. This approach promotes the reuse of food waste by supporting the principles of a circular economy and offers sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels and synthetic chemicals. This contributes to reducing the carbon footprint, preserving soil and water quality, and providing economic sustainability through the production of high-value products. In this study, the properties of olive mill wastewater, an important and valuable waste in the olive oil industry, its environmental aspects, and its use in biotechnological applications that integrate green chemistry are evaluated.

Abstract
The microbial population in the pig's gastrointestinal tract can be influenced by incorporating fibrous by-products into the diets. This study investigated the impact of including two types of dried olive cake (OC) in pigs' diets on fecal bacterial composition. The correlation between fecal microbiota and growth performance, nutrient digestibility, gut fermentation pattern and slurry gas emissions was also evaluated. Thirty male Pietrain x (Landrace x Large white) pigs (47.9 ± 4.21 kg) were assigned to three groups: a control group (C), a group fed a diet with 20% partially defatted OC (20PDOC), and a group fed a diet with 20% cyclone OC (20COC) for 21 days. Fecal samples collected before and after providing the experimental diets were analyzed for the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Pigs were weighed, and feed intake was recorded throughout the study. Potential ammonia and methane emissions from slurry were measured. No significant differences in alpha diversity indexes were found. The taxonomic analysis revealed that Firmicutes and Bacteroidota phyla were dominant at the phylum level across all groups. Differential abundance analysis using ALDEx showed significant differences among groups for various bacteria at the phylum, genus, and species levels at the end of the experiment. Pigs from 20PDOC and 20COC groups exhibited increased abundances of health-promoting bacteria, such as Plactomycetota at the phylum level and Allisonella and an unidentified genus from the Eggerthellaceae family at the genus level. These changes influenced short-chain fatty acids' (SCFA) concentration in slurries, leading to greater acetic, butyric, caproic and heptanoic acids in OC-fed groups, especially 20COC pigs. A volatility analysis revealed significant positive correlations (p < 0.05) between Uncultured_Bacteroidales and Unculured_Selenomonadaceae and energy digestibility. Monoglobus and Desulfovibrio showed a positive significant (p < 0.05) correlation with total SCFA, indicating a high impact on gut fermentation. However, growth performance parameters and potential gas emission displayed no significant correlations with a specific bacterial genus. In conclusion, our results suggest that OC inclusion into pig diets could positively modulate and contribute to the gut microbiota's favorable composition and functionality. Also, nutrient digestibility and gut fermentation patterns can be associated with specific microbial populations.

Abstract
Olive oil is a food of great importance in the Mediterranean diet and culture. However, during its production, the olive oil industry generates a large amount of waste by-products that can be an important source of bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds and terpenes, revalorizing them in the context of the circular economy. Therefore, it is of great interest to study the distribution and abundance of these bioactive compounds in the different by-products. This research is a screening focused on phytochemical analysis, with particular emphasis on the identification and quantification of the phenolic and terpenic fractions. Both the main products of the olive industry (olives, olive paste and produced oil) and the by-products generated throughout the oil production process (leaf, "alpeorujo", liquid and solid residues generated during decanting commonly named "borras" and washing water) were analyzed. For this purpose, different optimized extraction procedures were performed for each matrix, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-TOF/MS) analysis. Although no phenolic alcohols were quantified in the leaf and the presence of secoiridoids was low, this by-product was notable for its flavonoid (720 ± 20 µg/g) and terpene (5000 ± 300 µg/g) contents. "Alpeorujo" presented a complete profile of compounds of interest, being abundant in phenolic alcohols (900 ± 100 µg/g), secoiridoids (4500 ± 500 µg/g) and terpenes (1200 ± 100 µg/g), among others. On the other hand, while the solid residue of the borras was the most abundant in phenolic alcohols (3700 ± 200 µg/g) and secoiridoids (680 ± 20 µg/g), the liquid fraction of this waste was notable for its content of elenolic acid derivatives (1700 ± 100 µg/mL) and phenolic alcohols (3000 ± 300 µg/mL). Furthermore, to our knowledge, this is the first time that the terpene content of this by-product has been monitored, demonstrating that it is an important source of these compounds, especially maslinic acid (120 ± 20 µg/g). Finally, the phytochemical content in wash water was lower than expected, and only elenolic acid derivatives were detected (6 ± 1 µg/mL). The results highlighted the potential of the olive by-products as possible alternative sources of a wide variety of olive bioactive compounds for their revalorization into value-added products.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds from a hydroalcoholic extract of wet olive pomace were purified and concentrated by an integrated membrane process in organic media. First, UF010104 (Solsep BV) and UP005 (Microdyn Nadir) membranes were tested to be implemented in the ultrafiltration stage, with the aim of purifying the extract and obtaining a permeate enriched in phenolic compounds. Despite the high flux observed with the UF010104 membrane (20.4 ± 0.7 L·h-1·m-2, at 2 bar), the UP005 membrane was selected because of a more suitable selectivity. Even though some secoiridoids were rejected, the permeate stream obtained with this membrane contained high concentrations of valuable simple phenols and phenolic acids, whereas sugars and macromolecules were retained. Then, the ultrafiltration permeate was subjected to a nanofiltration step employing an NF270 membrane (DuPont) for a further purification and fractionation of the phenolic compounds. The permeate flux was 50.2 ± 0.2 L·h-1·m-2, working at 15 bar. Hydroxytyrosol and some phenolic acids (such as vanillic acid, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid) were recovered in the permeate, which was later concentrated by reverse osmosis employing an NF90 membrane. The permeate flux obtained with this membrane was 15.3 ± 0.3 L·h-1·m-2. The concentrated phenolic mixture that was obtained may have important applications as a powerful antioxidant and for the prevention of diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the ACE inhibitory activity of aqueous extracts of olive pomace and to understand whether they represent a good source of bioactive LMW peptides for nutritional and pharmacological applications. We produced a water extract from olive pomace (var. Picual) and obtained its low molecular weight (LMW) fraction (<3 kDa). The calculated yield of extraction was 100.2 ± 7.9 mg of LMW peptides per 100 g of olive pomace. The olive pomace LMW fraction possessed strong ACE inhibitory activity (IC50 = 3.57 ± 0.22 µg prot/mL). The LMW fraction (<3 kDa) was analysed by nanoscale liquid chromatography-Orbitrap coupled with tandem mass spectrometry and de novo sequencing. Thirty new peptides, containing between 7-17 amino acids and molecular masses ranging 778-1354 Da, were identified by the Peaks database algorithm using the available Olea europaea (cv. Farga) genome database. Ten new peptides were also identified by Peaks de novo sequencing. The protein sources of twelve peptides detected in the database by Peaks DB were identified by BLAST search. The ACE inhibitory activity of the identified peptides was predicted by BIOPEP software. We conclude that olive pomace possesses ACE inhibitory activity and contains low molecular weight peptides with (predicted) biological activity. Olive pomace may represent a good source of peptides for nutritional and pharmaceutical applications. In our study, it has been shown that olive pomace possesses ACE inhibitory activity and contains low molecular weight peptides with (predicted) biological activity. Olive pomace may represent a good source of peptides for nutritional and pharmaceutical applications. More research is needed in order to identify the in vivo effects of olive pomace bioactive peptides.

Abstract
The agri-food industry generates substantial amounts of waste, including by-products and residues. The increasing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the agri-food sector has sparked an interest in finding alternative uses for such waste materials. One promising approach is the utilization of waste from the agri-food industry as feed for the rearing of mealworms (Tenebrio molitor). Since agri-food waste is rich in proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and vitamins, as well as other bioactive compounds, all of which are essential for insect growth and development, incorporating such waste into the diet of mealworms promotes sustainable insect production, reducing the economic and environmental problems associated with waste disposal. This practice can also be beneficial for the rearing of mealworms since their nutritional value can also be enhanced. To this end, various waste materials, such as fruit and vegetable peels, spent grains, and food processing residues, have been investigated as potential feed sources, leading to increased mass production, lower cost, and enhanced nutritional value. This review aims to highlight the potential of agri-food waste as a feed source for mealworms, as well as their potential to enhance their nutritional value. Furthermore, the potential applications of mealworms reared on agri-food waste are highlighted, including their potential as a sustainable protein source for human consumption and as feed ingredients in the livestock and aquaculture sectors.

Abstract
Agrifood industries generate large amounts of waste that may result in remarkable environmental problems, such as soil and water contamination. Therefore, proper waste management and treatment have become an environmental, economic, and social challenge. Most of these wastes are exceptionally rich in bioactive compounds (e.g., polyphenols) with potential applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Indeed, the recovery of polyphenols from agrifood waste is an example of circular bioeconomy, which contributes to the valorization of waste while providing solutions to environmental problems. In this context, unconventional extraction techniques at the industrial scale, such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), which has demonstrated its efficacy at the laboratory level for analytical purposes, have been suggested to search for more efficient recovery procedures. On the other hand, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been proposed as an efficient and green alternative to typical extraction solvents. This review aims to provide comprehensive insights regarding the extraction of phenolic compounds from agrifood waste. Specifically, it focuses on the utilization of MAE in conjunction with NADES. Moreover, this review delves into the possibilities of recycling and reusing NADES for a more sustainable and cost-efficient industrial application. The results obtained with the MAE-NADES approach show its high extraction efficiency while contributing to green practices in the field of natural product extraction. However, further research is necessary to improve our understanding of these extraction strategies, optimize product yields, and reduce overall costs, to facilitate the scaling-up.

Abstract
In this review, the main properties of olive mill solid waste, the primary by-product of olive oil production, and its feasibility as a feedstock for anaerobic digesters operating at laboratory-, pilot- and industrial-scales are discussed in detail. Nutrient addition and thermal pretreatments were found to have the potential to address the challenges arising from the high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, the low pH, and the high concentration of phenolic compounds. Furthermore, anaerobic co-digestion with different organic feedstocks has been identified as one of the most promising options to solve the aforementioned problems and the seasonality nature of olive waste, while improving the efficiency of anaerobic treatment plants that operate throughout the whole year. The insights generated from this study show co-digestion with wastes from animal farming to be the most environmentally and economically sustainable method for improving anaerobic digestion processes with olive mill solid waste.

Abstract
Olive oil mill wastewater (OMW) is an environmental concern in olive oil producers' regions due to its use in agricultural soils as an organic amendment. However, OMW can also be used as organic fertilizer due to their high organic matter and nutrient levels, but its use, when it occurs without environmental management, can cause serious environmental implications for soils and waters. This work evaluated the impact of different OMW levels on a set of physicochemical parameters from an agricultural vertisol where wheat grew (Triticum aestivum L var. Douma 1). A set of physicochemical parameters were conducted before adding different levels of OMW (0, 5, 10 and 15 L m-2) at two soil depths (0-30 and 30-60 cm) and for the two growing seasons to determine: i) the effect of OMW treatments on the studied physicochemical soil properties (bulk density, soil porosity, soil pH, electrical conductivity and organic matter), ii) available primary (N, P, K) and secondary macronutrients (Ca, Mg and Na), ii) micronutrients (Cu Fe, Mn and Zn), and iv) available heavy metals (Cd and Pb). The results indicated that soil physicochemical parameters were slightly improved, mainly due to improvement in organic matter, macro- and micronutrients, usually proportionally to the olive mill wastewater dose. Cadmium and Pb were within the permissible limits. The increased OMW had different behaviour on the soil nutritional balances of different elements, leading to nutrient imbalances, although in some cases, they were improved. However, the plant growth was not affected, and it was improved under 10 L m-2 and 15 L m-2 doses. The results offer valuable data about the use of OMW as organic fertilizer for crops and their potential impact on soil properties.

Abstract
The development of biobased polymeric materials for wastewater purification has become a demand due to the growing need for water free of hazardous metal ions for safe purposes. The organic components of the OLLW including carbohydrates, phenolics, aromatic acids and others are cost-effective and sustainable choices for this application. This work focuses on a method for turning the organic components of liquid waste from the olive industry (OILW) into a foam-based value-added polymer that has several metal ion binding sites. The process of making the target polymers involved reacting the components of the OILW with hexamethylene diisocyante and 1,4-phnyelene diisocynate to create the polymeric materials LHMIDIC and LPDIC that are in foam forms with urethane linkages, respectively. The adsorption competence of the polymeric foams toward Pb(II) was evaluated as a function of various parameters including adsorbent dose, pH, temperature, initial ion concentration and time. The optimum parameters values that led to a quantitative removal of Pb(II) were identified. The obtained thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption by the two foams was spontaneous at room temperature. The isothermal and kinetic values showed that the adsorption by synthesized foams follows a second order kinetic and obeys the Langmuir isothermal model. The foams showed a high tendency for removing multi metal ions present in a real sample of wastewater. The original nature of the starting material used in making the foam, cost and the obtained results showed the potential of using the foam in a large-scale plants of wastewater purification.

Abstract
A renewed understanding of eco-friendly principles is moving the industrial sector toward a shift in the utilization of less harmful solvents as a main strategy to improve manufacturing. Green analytical chemistry (GAC) has definitely paved the way for this transition by presenting green solvents to a larger audience. Among the most promising, surely DESs (deep eutectic solvents), NaDESs (natural deep eutectic solvents), HDESs (hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents), and HNaDESs (hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvents), with their unique features, manifest a wide-range of applications, including their use as a means for the extraction of small bioactive compounds. In examining recent advancements, in this review, we want to focus our attention on some of the most interesting and novel 'solvent-free' extraction techniques, such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) in relation to the possibility of better exploiting DESs and NaDESs as plausible extracting solvents of the phenolic compounds (PCs) present in different matrices from olive oil components, such as virgin olive pomace, olive leaves and twigs, virgin and extra virgin olive oil (VOO and EVOO, respectively), and olive cake and olive mill wastewaters (OMWW). Therefore, the status of DESs and NaDESs is shown in terms of their nature, efficacy and selectivity in the extraction of bioactive phytochemicals such as secoiridoids, lignans, phenolic acids and alcohols. Related studies on experimental design and processes' optimization of the most promising DESs/NaDESs are also reviewed. In this framework, an extensive list of relevant works found in the literature is described to consider DESs/NaDESs as a suitable alternative to petrochemicals in cosmetics, pharmaceutical, or food applications.

Abstract
The integration of green technologies such as microwave- and enzyme-assisted extraction (MEAE) has been shown to improve the extraction efficiency of bioactive compounds while reducing processing time and costs. MEAE using tannase alone (MEAE-Tan), or in combination with cellulase and pectinase (MEAE-Tan-Cel-Pec), was optimized to produce enriched phenolic and antioxidant extracts from olive pomace. The individual and integrated impact of enzyme concentration, temperature, and pomace/water ratio were determined using a central composite rotatable design. Optimal extraction conditions for MEAE-Tan (60 °C, 15 min, 2.34% of enzyme (w/w), and 1:15 pomace/water ratio) and MEAE-Tan-Cel-Pec (46 °C, 15 min, 2% of enzymes (w/w), in the proportion of 1:1:1, and 1:20 pomace/water ratio) resulted in extracts containing 7110.6 and 2938.25 mg GAE/kg, respectively. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was correlated with phenolic acid release, which was enzyme-dependent, as determined with HPLC-DAD analysis. Enzyme selection had a significant impact on the phenolic profile of extracts, with tannase releasing high concentrations of chlorogenic acid and the combined use of enzymes releasing high concentrations of hydroxytyrosol and chlorogenic and ferulic acids. The novelty of this study relies on the integration and optimization of two green technologies (microwave- and enzyme-assisted extraction) to improve the extraction efficiency of bioactive phenolics from olive pomace while reducing processing time and costs. While these techniques have been evaluated isolated, the benefits of using both processing strategies simultaneously remain largely unexplored. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of the integration and processing optimization of two environmentally friendly technologies as a promising alternative to treat agro-industrial byproducts.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to assess the inhibitory effects of an aqueous extract from olive oil mill waste (alperujo) on the growth of a lactic acid bacteria (LAB) cocktail consisting of various strains of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum species. For this purpose, response surface methodology was employed using two independent variables (pH levels 3.5-5.55; hydroxytyrosol concentration ranging from 0.93-2990 ppm). The response variable was the average inhibition per treatment on the LAB cocktail (expressed as a percentage). The developed model identified significant terms, including the linear effect of hydroxytyrosol and pH, their interaction, and the quadratic effect of pH. Maximum inhibition of the LAB cocktail was observed at progressively higher concentrations of hydroxytyrosol and lower pH values. Therefore, complete inhibition of LAB in the synthetic culture medium could only be achieved for concentrations of 2984 ppm hydroxytyrosol at a pH of 3.95. These findings suggest that extracts derived from "alperujo" could be utilized as a natural preservative in acidified foods with a bitter flavor and antioxidant requirements.

Abstract
The intensive industrial and agricultural activities currently on-going worldwide to feed the growing human population have led to significant increase in the amount of wastewater produced. These effluents are high in phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and heavy metals. These compounds can provoke imbalance in the ecosystem with grievous consequences to both the environment and humans. Adequate treatment of these wastewaters is therefore of utmost importance to humanity. This can be achieved through valorization of these waste streams, which is based on biorefinery idea and concept of reduce, reuse, and recycle for sustainable circular economy. This concept uses innovative processes to produce value-added products from waste such as wastewater. Yeast-based wastewater treatment is currently on the rise given to the many characteristics of yeast cells. Yeasts are generally fast growing, and they are robust in terms of tolerance to stress and inhibitory compounds, in addition to their ability to metabolize a diverse range of substrates and create a diverse range of metabolites. Therefore, yeast cells possess the capacity to recover and transform agro-industrial wastewater nutrients into highly valuable metabolites. In addition to remediating the wastewater, numerous value-added products such as single cell oil (SCO), single cell proteins (SCPs), biofuels, organic acid, and aromatic compounds amongst others can be produced through fermentation of wastewater by yeast cells. This work thus brings to limelight the potential roles of yeast cells in reducing, reusing, and recycling of agro-industrial wastewaters while proffering solutions to some of the factors that limit yeast-mediated wastewater valorization.

Abstract
The search for new sustainable alternatives for plant disease control has gained interest in the last decades. Compost extracts are nowadays considered a remarkable alternative to agrochemicals due to their biopesticidal properties. However, these properties could be affected by the different variables of extraction protocols and by starting compost. This work focused on the physicochemical and biological characterization of compost extracts obtained from a wide range of composted materials and different extraction protocols (CEP). CEP-1 and CEP-4 involved incubation at 20 °C for 48 h and 14 days, respectively; CEP-2 incubation for 24 h at 40 °C; while CEP-3 were incubated for 12 h at 70 °C. Electrical conductivity, pH, total organic carbon (TOC) and phenolic content were determined as well as the actinobacterial count and enzyme profiles related to plant pathogen suppression. Additionally, the influence of the different materials and protocols on the in vitro growth inhibition of Alternaria alternata and Botrytis cinerea was determined. The starting materials and extraction protocols significantly influenced the physicochemical and biological characteristics of extracts. Treatments based on long incubation times at 20 °C, as well as those based on short incubation times at 40 °C, resulted in extracts with increased suppressive properties. However, extracts derived from CEP-3 protocol were characterized by high phenolic and TOC content, low functional biodiversity, and a more discreet antagonistic capacity. Therefore, the development and optimization of suitable extraction protocols could lead to compost extracts with increased phytoprotective capacities, thus becoming an effective and sustainable alternative to chemical inputs.

Abstract
Analysis of the oxidative stability of novel avocado chips with added natural extracts was carried out with the aim of reducing the chemical additive content in their formulation. Two different natural extracts were initially evaluated and characterized: one obtained from olive pomace (OE) and other from pomegranate seed waste. OE was selected due to its better antioxidant potential according to FRAP, ABTS, and DPPH assays as well as its higher total phenolic content. The formulations used were 0, 1.5 wt.%, and 3 wt.% of OE. A gradual disappearance of the band found around 3009 cm-1 and related to unsaturated fatty acids was observed in the control sample in contrast to formulations with added OE. The band observed near 3299 cm-1 widened and intensified with time due to the oxidation degree of samples, with this effect being higher in the control chips. The observed changes in fatty acid and hexanal content with storage time underlined the higher extent of oxidation in the control samples. This fact could suggest an antioxidant protectant action of OE in avocado chips during thermal treatment, which was attributed to the presence of phenolic compounds. The obtained chips incorporating OE represent a viable option for the development of a natural, healthy, and clean-label avocado snack at competitive cost and with low environmental impacts.

Abstract
Olive pomace is a by-product of olive oil production that is toxic to the environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the methods of olive pomace valorization through the implementation of novel technology, the so-called microwave-assisted extraction process. To determine the total polyphenol content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AA), polyphenol extraction using MAE was performed. Response surface methodology was used to determine the best extraction conditions, whereby the effects of three factors, solid ratio (g/50 mL), time (s), and power (W), were measured. The ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method was used to assess AA, whereas the spectrophotometric Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) method was used to determine TPC. The highest TPC of 15.30 mg of gallic acid equivalents per gram of dried weight (mg GAE/gdw) was generated after 105 s at 450 W, with a solid concentration of 1 g/50 mL, while the maximum AA was 10 mg of ascorbic acid equivalents per gram of dried weight (mg AAE/gdw). Numerical optimization revealed that 800 W, 180 s, and 1 g/50 mL were the best conditions for obtaining maximum TPC and AA.

Abstract
Olive pomace oil is obtained when a mixture of olive pomace and residual water is subjected to a second centrifugation. This oil has small amounts of phenolic and volatile compounds compared with extra-virgin olive oil. This study aimed to promote the aromatization of olive pomace oil with rosemary and basil using ultrasound-assisted maceration (UAM) to increase its bioactive potential. For each spice, the ultrasound operating conditions (amplitude, temperature, and extraction time) were optimized through central composite designs. Free fatty acids, peroxide value, volatile compounds, specific extinction coefficients, fatty acids, total phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity, polar compounds, and oxidative stability were determined. After obtaining the optimal maceration conditions assisted by ultrasound, pomace oils flavored with rosemary and basil were compared to pure olive pomace oil. Quality parameters and fatty acids showed no significant difference after UAM. Rosemary aromatization by UAM resulted in a 19.2-fold increase in total phenolic compounds and a 6-fold increase in antioxidant capacity, in addition to providing the most significant increase in oxidative stability. Given this, aromatization by ultrasound-assisted maceration is an efficient method to increase, in a short time, the bioactive potential of olive pomace oil.

Abstract
Virgin olive oil (VOO) production generates large amounts of a harmful by-product, olive mill waste (OMW) or alpeorujo, which has a strong environmental impact and that must be recycled to adapt VOO production to a circular economy model. Here, the valorization of OMW was studied by considering three consecutive stages: Stage 1 involves the generation of OMW; Stage 2 the recovery of bioactive phenolic compounds from the fresh OMW using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs), generating a valuable phenolic extract and a new by-product, a dephenolized OMW named "alpeoNADES"; and Stage 3 involves vermicomposting alpeoNADES with Eisenia fetida earthworms. Six NADES were formulated and tested, selecting a NADES composed of citric acid and fructose (CF) derived from food grade and biodegradable substances. CF was the most effective solvent to obtain phenolic extracts for nutraceutical and agronomical purposes, extracting 3988.74 mg/kg of polyphenols from fresh OMW. This alpeoNADES is a non-palatable substrate for E. fetida earthworms, as the residual CF gives it an acidic pH (pH 2). Its palatability was improved by mixing it with horse manure and straw for vermicomposting, in a 1:1 and 3:1 dry weight ratio. When these substrates were precomposted for 3 weeks they reached pH 5.5-6 and they could then be vermicomposted for 23 weeks (using OMW as a control). The best substrate for vermicomposting was determined by the worm biomass, growth rate, carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio, and N and P content. AlpeoNADES and manure 3:1 produced the highest quality vermicompost in the shortest time, generating a product that complied with European standards for organic fertilizers. Hence, alpeoNADES was recycled to a low-cost, organic balanced fertilizer in Stage 3, enabling the olive oil industry to transition to sustainable production through this integrated circular economy design.

Abstract
Agricultural applications of olive mill wastewater (OMW) represent a critical challenge, consistent with waste recycling and the trend towards a more sustainable pattern of agriculture. In this context, an integrated study on the agroecological applications of OMW from the ultrafiltration (UF) - nanofiltration (NF) process was carried out. This process generated three fractions: UF retentate and NF permeate, depleted in salts and phenolic compounds, were studied for their fertilization and irrigation potential, while NF retentate, enriched in these elements, was studied for its potential as a bioherbicide. The phytotoxicity of the NF retentate fraction on two crops (maize and flax) was evaluated on seedlings growth and chloroplast pigments content. In addition, the induced defense responses in maize and flax seedlings were investigated by measuring two parameters: the activity of the detoxification enzyme glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and the concentration of polyphenols, as a component of the antioxidant defense strategy in plants. Biomass, height, and chloroplast pigments content decreased progressively with increasing NF retentate concentration. Conversely, an increase in GST activity and polyphenol concentration was observed. These results highlighted the ability of OMW to induce an oxidative stress on maize and flax seedlings, triggering a defense response through GST and phenolic compounds. On the other hand, in vitro tests on the phytotoxicity of the NF retentate fraction on the common weed Sinapis arvensis were carried out. No germination was observed even with the lowest dilution applied, thus establishing the first data about the selectivity of potential OMW-derived bioherbicides. On the other hand, UF retentate and NF permeate treatments led to a significant increase in maize growth: these fractions could then be considered as a promising organic fertilizer for degraded agricultural soils, as well as an alternative water source for crops irrigation.

Abstract
The effect of granulometric fractionation and micronization of olive pomace (OP) on the biotransformation of phenolic compounds by intestinal microbiota was investigated in vitro. Three types of powdered OP samples were incubated with human feces to simulate colonic fermentation, after a sequential static digestion: non-fractionated OP (NF), granulometrically fractionated OP (GF) and granulometrically fractionated and micronized OP (GFM). GF and GFM favored the release of hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein aglycone, apigenin and phenolic acid metabolites in the first hours of colonic fermentation compared to NF (up to 41-fold higher). GFM caused higher release of hydroxytyrosol than GF. GFM was the only sample to release tyrosol and sustained tyrosol levels up to 24 h of fermentation. Micronization associated with granulometric fractionation was more efficient than granulometric fractionation alone to increase the release of phenolic compounds from the OP matrix during simulated colonic fermentation and can be further studied for nutraceutical purposes.

Abstract
The olive oil production is a key economic sector for the producing countries, mainly in the Mediterranean region. However, the worldwide increasing oil production led to the generation of huge amounts of wastes detrimental for the environment. Therefore, efficient and sustainable management of olive industry wastes has recently acquired significant interest in the scientific research community. In the actual world energy context, various studies dealt with the valorization of the solid/liquid waste streams obtained from the discontinuous/continuous extraction of olive oil for energy purposes. The application of waste-to-energy treatments to these effluents can turn them out into an important energy resource. This review article presents the main used oil extraction techniques and their related research developments. The characterization of the generated wastes and the factors behind their bad environmental impacts are highlighted. Relevant research works related to biochemical and thermochemical conversion of olive mill wastes are extensively reviewed and discussed in terms of product yields and composition. A recent update of the studies addressing olive industry waste applications for energy production is also given. This investigation revealed a lack of studies in relation to the hydrothermal processing of olive mill wastes. Despite their suitability for this process (e.g., high moisture content), few papers have investigated the hydrothermal conversion of these waste streams. This scientific gap opens a very interesting research direction, which has to be further investigated.

Abstract
Refiners around the globe are either considering or are actively replacing a portion of their crude oil inputs originating from fossil sources with alternative sources, including recycled materials (plastics, urban waste, mixed solid waste) and renewable materials (bio-mass waste, vegetable oils). In this paper, we explore such replacement, specifically focusing on the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) operation. Five pyrolysis oils, obtained from municipal solid waste (MSW) and biogenic material (olive stones/pits), were fully characterized and tested at 10% loading against a standard fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) vacuum gasoil (VGO) feed in a bench scale reactor using an industrially available fluid catalytic cracking catalyst based on ultrastable Y zeolite to simulate fluid catalytic cracking co-processing. Despite having unique feed properties, including high Conradson carbon (e.g., up to 19.41 wt%), water (e.g., up to 5.7 wt%), and contaminants (e.g., up to 227 ppm Cl) in some cases, the five pyrolysis oils gave similar yield patterns as vacuum gasoil. Gasoline was slightly (ca. 1 wt%) higher in all cases and LPG slightly (ca. 1 wt%) lower. Olefinicity in the LPG streams were unchanged, bottoms and light cycle oil (LCO) showed no significant changes, while dry gas was slightly (up to -0.2 wt%) lower. Coke selectivity was also unchanged (maximum -7.7 wt%, relatively), suggesting minimal to no heat balance concerns when co-processing in an industrial fluid catalytic cracking unit. The results demonstrate the applicability of municipal solid waste and biogenic originating pyrolysis oils into a refinery. A catalyst design concept is explored, based on higher rare Earth oxide exchange and/or utilization of ZSM-5 zeolite, that would further minimize the impacts of replacing fossil oils with pyrolysis oils, namely one that shifts the 1% higher gasoline into LPG.

Abstract
Despite the environmental concerns raised every year by the generation of high volumes of wet olive pomace, it contains valuable phenolic compounds that are essential for the valorization of this by-product. In this work, an integrated process to recover phenolic compounds from wet olive pomace is proposed. It consists of ultrasound-assisted solid-liquid extraction, followed by ultrafiltration and nanofiltration. Several commercial membranes were studied at different operational conditions. The ultrafiltration stage allowed the purification of biophenols, which were obtained in the permeate stream. Regarding organic matter, satisfactory rejection values were obtained with both commercial UH030 and UP005 membranes (Microdyn Nadir), but the latter provided more efficient purification and higher values of permeate flux, above 18 L·h-1·m-2 at 2.5 bar and 1.5 m·s-1. Later, this permeate stream was concentrated by means of a nanofiltration process, obtaining polyphenol rejection values that surpassed 85% with the commercial NF270 membrane (DuPont), then achieving the concentration of the previously purified polyphenols.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) represents a by-product but also a source of biologically active compounds, and their recycling is a relevant strategy to recover income and to reduce environmental impact. The objective of the present study was to obtain a new functional beverage with a health-promoting effect starting from OMWW. Fresh OMWW were pre-treated through filtration and/or microfiltration and subjected to fermentation using strains belonging to Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Candida boidinii and Wickerhamomyces anomalus. During fermentation, phenolic content and hydroxytyrosol were monitored. Moreover, the biological assay of microfiltered fermented OMWW was detected versus tumor cell lines and as anti-inflammatory activity. The results showed that in microfiltered OMWW, fermentation was successfully conducted, with the lowest pH values reached after 21 days. In addition, in all fermented samples, an increase in phenol and organic acid contents was detected. Particularly, in samples fermented with L. plantarum and C. boidinii in single and combined cultures, the concentration of hydroxytyrosol reached values of 925.6, 902.5 and 903.5 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, biological assays highlighted that fermentation determines an increase in the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of OMWW. Lastly, an increment in the active permeability on Caco-2 cell line was also revealed. In conclusion, results of the present study confirmed that the process applied here represents an effective strategy to achieve a new functional beverage.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance is a problem in contemporary society, with Staphylococcus aureus standing out as a threat due to its ability to colonize, its pathogenicity, and its expression of several virulence factors. In this context, antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) emerges as an alternative to conventional microbicidal or microbiostatic systems, enabling numerous and successive applications without developing side effects and microbial resistance. In this context, an aPDI system against cultures of S. aureus based on a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion incorporating curcumin as the photosensitizer (PS), with and without olive leaf extract (OLE), was developed and the antibacterial efficacy evaluated under LED activation (ʎ450 ± 10 nm) by depositing an energy density of 14 J/cm2. The produced emulsified systems showed no significant differences in the droplet size and morphology, remaining stable along the tested period of 30 days. The bacterial reduction achieved after the first aPDI application for the emulsions added with curcumin and curcumin combined with the OLE was 5 log10 CFU.mL-1 and 6 log10 CFU.mL-1, respectively, revealing a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.0001). After the second aPDI application, an increased microbial reduction (7 log10 CFU.mL-1) was observed for both studied groups even with a low significant difference (p < 0.05). The PS loading through an emulsified system for aPDI obtained a bactericidal action against S. aureus, increased by applying two aPDI, showing a significant synergy between photodynamic inactivation, OLE delivery and antibacterial activity. In addition, the developed solutions were produced using natural products by an ecologically correct process.

Abstract
Billions of tons of agro-industrial residues are produced worldwide. This is associated with the risk of pollution as well as management and economic problems. Simultaneously, non-edible portions of many crops are rich in bioactive compounds with valuable properties. For this reason, developing various methods for utilizing agro-industrial residues as a source of high-value by-products is very important. The main objective of the paper is a review of the newest studies on biologically active compounds included in non-edible parts of crops with the highest amount of waste generated annually in the world. The review also provides the newest data on the chemical and biological properties, as well as the potential application of phytochemicals from such waste. The review shows that, in 2020, there were above 6 billion tonnes of residues only from the most popular crops. The greatest amount is generated during sugar, oil, and flour production. All described residues contain valuable phytochemicals that exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial and very often anti-cancer activity. Many studies show interesting applications, mainly in pharmaceuticals and food production, but also in agriculture and wastewater remediation, as well as metal and steel industries.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMW), produced during olive oil production, contains high levels of salt contents, organic matter, suspended particles, and toxic chemicals (particularly phenols), which all result in increased biological and chemical oxygen demand. Olive Oil Mills' Wastes (OMW), which have dark brown color with unpleasant smell, consist mainly of water, high organic (mainly phenols and polyphenols) and low inorganic compounds (e.g. potassium and phosphorus), as well as grease. OMW components can negatively affect soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties, rendering it phytotoxic. However, OMW can positively affect plants' development when it's applied to the soil after pretreatment and treatment processes due to its high mineral contents and organic matter. There are various approaches for removing impurities and the treatment of OMW including chemical, biological, thermal, physiochemical, and biophysical processes. Physical techniques involve filtration, dilution, and centrifugation. Thermal methods include combustion and pyrolysis; biological techniques use anaerobic and aerobic techniques, whereas adsorption and electrocoagulation act as physiochemical methods, and coagulation and flocculation as biophysical methods. In contrast, combined biological treatment methods use co-digestion and composting. A comparison of the effects of both treated and untreated OMW samples on plant development and soil parameters can help us to understand the potential role of OMW in increasing soil fertility. This review discusses the impacts of untreated OMW and treated OMW in terms of soil characteristics, seed germination, and plant growth. This review summarizes all alternative approaches and technologies for pretreatment, treatment, and recovery of valuable byproducts and reuse of OMW across the world.

Abstract
The extraction of olive oil produces annually huge quantities of Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) that are considered as a source of pollution due to their high concentration in organic matter. This study aims to valorize Olive mill wastewater and investigates the effect of the extraction method and solvents on the contents and profiling of phenolic compounds and their antioxidant potential. It was revealed that the liquid-liquid method using ethyl acetate is the most effective followed by the maceration using chloroform/methanol (1:1), their polyphenol contents are respectively at 1.17 g GAE/L of OMW and 1.07 g GAE/L of OMW. In addition, the antioxidant activity was studied using ABTS test. It has shown that the methanolic extract has the best antioxidant activity at 15.75 mg/L. Moreover, we noticed a negative correlation between the phenolic compounds' concentration and their antioxidant activity which indicates that the phenolic profile may not be the same in the different extracts that's why a primary identification of the phenolic profile using UHPLC-MS was monitored and the results showed different chromatographic profiles between the samples.

Abstract
Bioactive compounds from olive mill pomace (OMP) were extracted through a two-step solid-liquid extraction procedure considering four factors at five levels of a central composite rotatable response surface design. The influence of the process variables time of the primary extraction (2.0-4.0 h), solvent-to-sample ratio during the primary extraction (5.0-10.0 mL/g), time of the secondary extraction (1.0-2.0 h), and the solvent-to-sample ratio during the secondary extraction (3.0-5.0 mL/g) were examined. The content of bioactive compounds was determined spectrophotometrically, and the individual phenolic compounds were evaluated by reserved-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The Derringer's function was used to optimize the extraction process, and the best conditions were found to be 3.2 h for the primary extraction, 10.0 mL/g for the solvent-to-sample ratio and 1.3 h for the secondary extraction associated with a solvent-to-sample ratio of 3.0 mL/g, obtaining a total phenolic content of 50.0 (expressed as mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry weight (dw). The response surface methodology proved to be a great alternative for reducing the number of tests, allowing the optimization of the extraction of phenolic antioxidants from OMP with a reduced number of experiments, promoting reductions in cost and analysis time.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is the study of materials' unique properties at the nanoscale. Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology in medicine, which has been utilized to treat some common diseases, such as cancer. The aim of the present work is to synthesize the cadmium (Cd) nanocomplex using paracetamol as a ligand with a molar ratio of 1:2 M/L that was characterized by different physicochemical methods and to explore the effect of the synthesized Cd nanocomplex on the immune system and the redox status of the body and their anticancer effects on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) induced in mice. Eighty female albino mice were separated into Group I: control; Group II: EAC; Group III: EAC treated with a low-dose Cd nanocomplex; and Group IV: EAC treated with a high-dose Cd nanocomplex. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3), and 8-hydroxy 2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Peroxynitrite level and glutathione peroxidase activity were assessed by spectrophotometry. NRF2 mRNA expression, cadmium content, and liver and renal toxicity were estimated. Results: There was a significant increase in IL-6, NLRP3, 8-OHdG, peroxynitrite, and NRF2 mRNA expressions and in the glutathione peroxidase activity in EAC treated with low- and high-dose Cd nanocomplexes. However, the EAC treated with high-dose Cd nanocomplex group showed significant liver and renal toxicity. Conclusion: Cadmium nanocomplex has anticancer effects on EAC induced in mice via its effects on the immune system and redox status as well as pyroptosis and epigenetic instability of the body, while high doses of Cd nanocomplex can cause liver and renal toxicity.

Abstract
Vegetable oil extraction generates high amounts of by-products, which are designated as oil cakes. Since the current strategies employed for oil cakes' reuse are linked with some drawbacks, identification of alternative approaches to decrease the environmental impact and promote a circular economy is of vital importance. In general, these materials are characterized by high fiber content, making them suitable to be employed in solid state fermentation (SSF). Filamentous fungi have been the microorganisms mostly applied in SSF and yeasts were applied in less extent. In the present work, three by-products from the extraction of olive, sunflower, and rapeseed oils were used as solid substrates in SSF for lipase and protease production by Yarrowia lipolytica W29. Oil cakes mixtures composition was optimized for the production of each enzyme using a simplex-centroid design of experiments. A 50% (w/w) mixture of olive cake (OC) and sunflower cake (SC) led to the highest lipase production, while a combination of the three oil cakes was most suitable for maximum protease production. Both enzymes were produced at maximum levels in a short period of 48 h. This work demonstrated that enzyme production by Y. lipolytica W29 in SSF can be modulated by the different combinations of oil cakes in the substrate mixture. Additionally, the potential of using by-products from vegetable oil industries in SSF processes was also demonstrated, showing alternative strategies for their valorization.

Abstract
Olive oil production is a significant source of economic profit for Mediterranean nations, accounting for around 98 percent of global output. Olive oil usage has increased dramatically in recent years, owing to its organoleptic characteristics and rising knowledge of its health advantages. The culture of olive trees and the manufacture of industrial and table olive oil produces enormous volumes of solid waste and dark liquid effluents, involving olive leaves, pomace, and olive oil mill wastewaters. These by-products cause an economic issue for manufacturers and pose major environmental concerns. As a result, partial reuse, like other agronomical production wastes, is a goal to be achieved. Because these by-products are high in bioactive chemicals, which, if isolated, might denote components with significant added value for the food, cosmetic, and nutraceutical sectors, indeed, they include significant amounts of beneficial organic acids, carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, and phenolic materials, which are distributed differently between the various wastes depending on the olive oil production method and table olive agronomical techniques. However, the extraction and recovery of bioactive materials from chosen by-products is a significant problem of their reasonable value, and rigorous detection and quantification are required. The primary aims of this review in this context are to outline the vital bioactive chemicals in olive by-products, evaluate the main developments in extraction, purification, and identification, and study their uses in food packaging systems and safety problems.

Abstract
Olive oil mill wastewater (OMWW) poses an undeniable environmental problem due to its high organic loads and phenolic compound (PC) content. This study determined the optimal conditions for preparing a new bio-sorbent from olive pomace (OP) and the adsorptive treatment of OMWW by this bio-sorbent. The activation reaction was performed with hydrogen peroxide. The results of the combination effect optimization of the three preparation variables, the activation temperature (°C) X1, the activation time (min) X2, and the impregnation ratio X3, are presented by the response surface methodology (RSM). The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at an activation time of 240 min, a temperature of 80 °C, and a ratio equal to 6.2:1. The bio-sorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The adsorption process performance of this bio-sorbent was examined in batch (phenol solution) and fixed-bed columns (real effluent of OMWW). An adsorption capacity of 789.28 mg g-1 and 643.92 mg g-1 has been achieved for 4000 mg L-1 concentration of PCs, respectively, for batch and fixed-bed column essays. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics were consistent with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Therefore, the Thomas model best fits the fixed-bed column experimental data. The bio-sorbent gave a high desorption percentage of PCs, which was above 60% using HCl (0.1M).

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the recovery of phenolic compounds from olive mill and winery wastes by conventional solid-liquid extraction (SLE) using water as the extraction solvent. The studied variables were extraction time (5-15 min), temperature (25-90 °C), solid-to-liquid ratio (1:10-1:100 (kg/L)), pH (3-10) and application of multiple extractions (1-3). The extraction efficiency was evaluated in terms of total phenolic content (TPC), determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-UV), but also from the recovery of some representative phenolic compounds. The optimized conditions were one extraction step, 10 min, 25 °C, 1:30 (kg/L), pH 5 for olive pomace, and one extraction step, 10 min, 70 °C, 1:100 (kg/L), pH 5 for winery residues. The extraction method is simple and suitable for scaling-up in industry, and the aqueous extracts are fully compatible with further purification schemes based on the use of membranes or resins. The optimized technique was applied to a set of different representative residues from olive mill and winery industries, to assess their suitability as sources for phenolic compounds recovery. The phenolic content in the extracts was evaluated by chromatographic analysis and by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay (FC). Furthermore, the antioxidant capacity was determined by 2,2-azinobis-3-etilbenzotiazolina-6-sulfonat (ABTS), 2,-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Because of their high contents in phenolic compounds and great antioxidant capacity, olive pomace and lees filters were identified as especially suited sources for phenolic compounds recovery.

Abstract
Dry eye (DED) is a prevalent disease with immune-mediated inflammation as the principal pathophysiological etiology. Olive pomace, the major by-product of the olive oil industry, is rich in high-value polyphenols. Their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities were determined on human CD4+ T cells (hTCD4+) and in a DED animal model. The viability of hTCD4+ cells isolated from peripheral blood and activated with phytohemagglutinin-M was evaluated after treatment for 48 h with an olive pomace extract (OPT3, 0.10–0.40 mg/mL) and its major compound, hydroxytyrosol (25–100 μM). Regarding the DED animal model, 100 μM hydroxytyrosol, 0.20 mg/mL OPT3, or vehicle (borate buffer) were topically administered to 14 days-desiccating stress-exposed (constant airflow/scopolamine administration) C57BL/6 mice. Tear volume, corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), CD4+, and CD8+ T cell count in lymph nodes (flow cytometry), and IP-10 and TNF-α gene expression (qRT-PCR) in the cornea, conjunctiva, and lacrimal glands were evaluated. OPT3 (0.2–0.4 mg/mL) and hydroxytyrosol (100 μM) significantly reduced hTCD4+ proliferation. In mice, both treatments reduced lacrimal gland IP-10 gene expression. OPT3 also decreased CFS, and conjunctival IP-10 and corneal TNF-α gene expression. In lymph nodes, hydroxytyrosol reduced CD3+, OPT3, and CD8+ count. Thus, a high-value application as a promising DED protection was proposed for olive pomace.

Abstract
The valorisation of agro-industrial residues presents a challenge in obtaining economically sustainable and environmentally friendly industrial processes. Olive pomace is a by-product generated in large quantities, from olive oil extraction. This residue mostly consists of lignocellulosic materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential use of extracted olive pomaces (EOP) obtained from olives with different ripening indexes (RI) and from different cultivars (Cobrançosa; RI = 2.5; 3.3 and 4.7; and Galega Vulgar; RI = 1.8; 2.9 and 4.8), to produce bioactive oligosaccharides from hemicelluloses by autohydrolysis. The hydrothermal treatment conditions were optimized by Response Surface Methodology, following a central composite rotatable design (CCRD), as a function of temperature (T: 142–198 °C) and time (t: 48–132 min), corresponding to severity factor (SF) values from 3.2 to 4.9. For all pomace samples, soluble sugar production was described by concave surfaces as a function of temperature and time. Autohydrolysis with SF equal or higher than 4.0 produced higher sugar yields, with maximum values around 180 g glucose equivalent/kg EOP for SF of 4.7 (190 °C/120 min) or 4.9 (198 °C/90 min). These values were similar for both cultivars and were not dependent on the ripening stage of the olives. Maximum oligosaccharide (OS) yields of 98% were obtained by autohydrolysis with SF of 4.0. The increase in SF to 4.9 resulted in a decrease in OS yield to 86–92%, due to the release of monomeric sugars. The monosaccharides were mostly xylose (55.8–67.7% in Galega; 50.4–69.0% in Cobrançosa liquid phases), and glucose, galactose, arabinose and rhamnose, in smaller quantities. Therefore, the production of bioactive xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) from olive pomaces mainly depends on the hydrothermal conditions used.

Abstract
The steam reforming of ethanol, methanol, and other oxygenates (e.g., bio-oil and olive mill wastewater) using Ni-based catalysts have been studied by the scientific community in the last few years. This process is already well studied over the last years, being the critical point, at this moment, the choice of a suitable catalyst. The utilization of these oxygenates for the production of “green” H2 is an interesting alternative to fuel fossils. For this application, Ni-based catalysts have been extensively studied since they are highly active and cheaper than noble metal-based materials. In this review, a comparison of several Ni-based catalysts reported in the literature for the different above-mentioned reactions is carried out. This study aims to understand if such catalysts demonstrate enough catalytic activity/stability for application in steam reforming of the oxygenated compounds and which preparation methods are most adequate to obtain these materials. In summary, it aims to provide insights into the performances reached and point out the best way to get better and improved catalysts for such applications (which depends on the feedstock used).

Abstract
The main goal of this review is to collect and analyze the recently published research concerning the conventional and sustainable treatment processes for olive mill wastewater (OMW). In the conventional treatment processes, it is noticed that the main objective is to meet the environmental regulations for remediated wastewater without considering the economical values of its valuable constituents such as polyphenols. These substances have many important environmental values and could be used in many vital applications. Conversely, sustainable treatment processes aim to recover the valuable constituents through different processes and then treat the residual wastewater. Both approaches’ operational and design parameters were analyzed to generalize their advantages and possible applications. A valorization-treatment approach for OMW is expected to make it a sustainable resource for ingredients of high economical value that could lead to a profitable business. In addition, inclusion of a recovery process will detoxify the residual OMW, simplify its management treatment, and allow the possible reuse of the vast amounts of processed water. In a nutshell, the proposed approach led to zero waste with a closed water cycle development.
