Abstract
In a qualitative investigation carried out in different environments (hospital, school, home) among 12-to-21-year-old asthmatics, we describe their perceptions of a pathology that is at once chronic and intermittent. More specifically, we show how an asthma attack constitutes a traumatic experience occurring in a temporality characterized by bodily upheaval. We describe the emotional labor provided by young asthmatics in their interpretation of their bodily signs, which are often read differently than in the medical sphere. The intermittency of the disease and the occurrence of crises in specific situations lead adolescents to achieve improved knowledge of their bodies. In this study, we analyze the roles of supports (inhalers…) and adaptative techniques in the development of know-how enabling them to autonomously treat their symptoms and monitor the signs of an upcoming attack.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Asthma is common, affecting up to 8% of adults in the United States. Several studies have shown an association between poorer diet and asthma. Despite the prevalence of fast-food consumption in the Western diet, research examining fast food consumption and asthma is limited. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the association between fast food consumption and asthma-related emergency room visits among adults with asthma in California from 2011-2016. METHODS This cross-sectional study focused on 11,561 adults with asthma in California. Publicly available data from the California Health Interview Survey was used. The independent variable included fast food consumption, and the dependent variable was emergency room visits due to asthma. This study used logistic regression models and controlled for sex, race, self-reported overall health, BMI, and current smoking status. Survey weights were applied to ensure the analysis represented the general population. RESULTS Consumption of fast food ≥3 times per week was associated with increased odds of emergency room visits for asthma among adults with asthma in California (unadjusted model: OR = 1.64 CI: 1.13-2.40, p = 0.01; adjusted model: ORadj =1.53, CI: 1.03-2.26, p = 0.03). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that high consumption of fast food among adults with asthma may result in higher odds of asthma-related emergency room visits. Thus, decreasing fast food consumption may benefit adults with asthma by reducing emergency room visits.

Abstract
Globally, plastic pollution threatens human health, particularly affecting the hearts of offspring exposed to maternal environmental factors early in development. Few studies have specifically addressed sex-specific cardiac injury in offspring resulting from maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs). This study investigates the potential cardiac injury in offspring following maternal exposure to 1 mg/L PS-NPs. Pregnant C57BL/6J mice were exposed to PS-NPs until 3 weeks postpartum to establish a maternal exposure model. Heart tissues were collected and weighed, and the transcriptomes of the offspring hearts were sequenced and analyzed using high-throughput RNA sequencing. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to assess the effects of PS-NPs on cardiac immune infiltration, fibrosis, and apoptosis in the offspring. PS-NPs caused a significant reduction in heart and body weight in female offspring compared to males. Additionally, PS-NPs induced sex-specific transcriptional reprogramming and metabolic disruptions in the offspring. PS-NPs also induced significant fibrosis, apoptosis, and increased CD68+ macrophage infiltration in offspring hearts. Notably, PS-NPs induced distinct cardiovascular diseases in the offspring. Fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis were significantly enriched in PS-NP-treated male offspring, while viral myocarditis was predominantly enriched in PS-NP-treated females. Our findings suggest that PS-NPs induce cardiotoxicity in offspring by disrupting metabolism, impairing immunity, and triggering fibrosis and apoptosis, with sex-specific differences. This study provides novel insights and a foundation for understanding sex-specific pharmacological differences and interventions in PS-NP-induced cardiovascular disease in offspring.

Abstract
There is limited literature examining the longitudinal stability of depressive symptoms for individuals with asthma, or how religiosity/spirituality relates to depressive symptoms across time. The present study aimed to identify the stability of and the longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and R/S across multiple developmental periods for adolesents with asthma (N = 998) within the United States. Depressive symptoms (βrange 0.33 - 0.60) and R/S (βrange 0.26 - 0.73) were stable across time, with some variability. A cross-lagged association demonstrated that use of R/S in young adulthood (Wave 3) was associated with decreased depressive symptoms in adulthood (β = -0.17, p < .001, CI - 0.25 - - 0.09, SE = 0.04). Use of R/S in adolescence (Wave 2) was predictive of increased depression in adulthood (β = 0.13, p < .001, CI 0.05 - 0.20, SE = 0.04). Results demonstrated differential relations between R/S and depressive symptoms across development, and highlight the potential importance of integrating conversations focused on R/S within healthcare settings, especially as R/S during young adulthood may buffer against or reduce depressive symptoms in adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coexistence of childhood asthma and mental health (MH) conditions can impact management and health outcomes but we need to better understand the etiology of multimorbidity. We investigated the association between childhood asthma and MH conditions as well as the determinants of their coexistence. METHODS We used data from the Canadian Health Survey of Children and Youth 2019 (3-17 years; n = 47,871), a cross-sectional, nationally representative Statistics Canada dataset. Our primary outcome was condition status (no asthma or MH condition; asthma only; MH condition only; both asthma, and a MH condition (AMHM)). Predictors of condition status were assessed using multiple multinomial logistic regression. Sensitivity analyses considered individual MH conditions. RESULTS MH condition prevalence was almost two-fold higher among those with asthma than those without asthma (21.1% vs. 11.6%, respectively). There were increased risks of each condition category associated with having allergies, other chronic conditions, and family members smoking in the home while there were protective associations with each condition status category for being female and born outside of Canada. Four additional variables were associated with AMHM and MH condition presence with one additional variable associated with both AMHM and asthma. In sensitivity analyses, the associations tended to be similar for most characteristics, although there was some variability. CONCLUSION There are common risk factors of asthma and MH conditions along with their multimorbidity with a tendency for MH risk factors to be associated with multimorbidity. MH condition presence is common and important to assess among children with asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rhinitis is a prevalent, chronic nasal condition associated with asthma. However, its developmental trajectories remain poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE We sought to describe the course of rhinitis from infancy to adolescence and the association between identified phenotypes, asthma-related symptoms, and physician-diagnosed asthma. METHODS We collected rhinitis data from questionnaires repeated across 22 time points among 688 children from infancy to age 11 years and used latent class mixed modeling (LCMM) to identify phenotypes. Once children were between ages 5 and 12, a study physician determined asthma diagnosis. We collected information on the following asthma symptoms: any wheeze, exercise-induced wheeze, nighttime coughing, and emergency department visits. For each, we used LCMM to identify symptom phenotypes. Using logistic regression, we described the association between rhinitis phenotype and asthma diagnosis and each symptom overall and stratified by atopic predisposition and sex. RESULTS LCMM identified 5 rhinitis trajectory groups: never/infrequent; transient; late onset, infrequent; late onset, frequent; and persistent. LCMM identified 2 trajectories for each symptom, classified as frequent and never/infrequent. Participants with persistent and late onset, frequent phenotypes were more likely to be diagnosed with asthma and to have the frequent phenotype for all symptoms (P < .01). We identified interaction between seroatopy and rhinitis phenotype for physician-diagnosed asthma (P = .04) and exercise-induced wheeze (P = .08). Severe seroatopy was more common among children with late onset, frequent and persistent rhinitis, with nearly 25% of these 2 groups exhibiting sensitivity to 4 or 5 of the 5 allergens tested. CONCLUSIONS In this prospective, population-based birth cohort, persistent and late onset, frequent rhinitis phenotypes were associated with increased risk of asthma diagnosis and symptoms during adolescence.

Abstract
The relatively few conditions and family members investigated in autism family health history limits etiologic understanding. For more comprehensive understanding and hypothesis-generation we produced an open-source catalogue of autism associations with family histories of mental, neurologic, cardiometabolic, birth defect, asthma, allergy, and autoimmune conditions. All live births in Denmark, 1980-2012, of Denmark-born parents (1,697,231 births), and their 3-generation family members were followed through April 10, 2017 for each of 90 diagnoses (including autism), emigration or death. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) were estimated via Cox regression for each diagnosis-family member type combination, adjusting for birth year, sex, birth weight, gestational age, parental ages at birth, and number of family member types of index person; aHRs also calculated for sex-specific co-occurrence of each disorder. We obtained 6,462 individual family history aHRS across autism overall (26,840 autistic persons; 1.6% of births), by sex, and considering intellectual disability (ID); and 350 individual co-occurrence aHRS. While primarily for reference material or use in other studies (e.g., meta-analyses), results revealed considerable breadth and variation in magnitude of familial health history associations with autism by type of condition, family member type, sex of the family member, side of the family, sex of the index person, and ID status, indicative of diverse genetic, familial, and non-genetic autism etiologic pathways. Careful attention to sources of autism likelihood in family health history, aided by our open data resource, may accelerate understanding of factors underlying neurodiversity.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Assess the quality of life of children aged 2-10 with mild to moderate bronchial asthma. To evaluate the general health condition of children with mild and moderate severity bronchial asthma. To determine health changes in children with mild- and moderate-severity bronchial asthma as they grow older. To evaluate the impact of mild- and moderate-severity bronchial asthma on children's daily and social activities, physical health, emotional state, and general well-being. Materials and Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in March-June 2020. Parents or guardians of 2-10-year-old children without bronchial asthma and children with mild to moderate bronchial asthma were interviewed after receiving their written informed consent. The questionnaire was based on the standardized quality-of-life quiz SF-36. A total of 248 questionnaires were collected-106 from the parents or guardians of children with bronchial asthma and 142 from parents/guardians of children without bronchial asthma. For further analysis, 106 children without bronchial asthma and with no chronic conditions were selected. Quantitative variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test and qualitative data using the chi-square (χ2) criteria. Quantitative data were described by giving means, medians, and standard deviations (SD); qualitative features by giving relative frequencies. Statistical data were analyzed using SPSS and Excel 2020. Results: Children with mild and moderate asthma exhibit poorer health compared to their healthy counterparts. Only 20.7% of respondents with asthma reported excellent or very good health, contrasting with 64.1% of healthy children (p < 0.001). As children with asthma age, their general condition improves, with 46.2% showing improvement in the past year, while 42.5% of healthy children had a stable condition (p < 0.05). In various activities, children with asthma face more constraints than healthy children (p < 0.05), including energetic activities (sick-59.5%; healthy-10.3%), moderate activities (sick-24.5%; healthy-4.7%), climbing stairs (sick-22.7%; healthy-3.8%), and walking over 100 m (sick-9.4%; healthy-0%). Children with asthma are more likely to experience exhaustion, anxiety, tiredness, lack of energy, and restraint in public activities (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Parents/caregivers of children with mild to moderate bronchial asthma rate their health worse than those of healthy children do. As children with mild to moderate bronchial asthma grow, the disease impact on their overall well-being decreases. Children with mild to moderate bronchial asthma, compared to healthy children, experience more limitations in vigorous or moderate activities; face more difficulties climbing stairs or walking more than 100 m; frequently feel exhaustion, anxiety, fatigue, or lack of energy; and encounter restrictions in social activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The utility measure is a method to quantify health-related quality of life according to the preference values that patients attach to their health status. This study aimed to estimate the utility measure of patients with controlled and uncontrolled severe asthma (SA) in Spain, separately. Additionally, other characteristics (sociodemographic, clinical, and healthcare resource use [HCRU]) were also assessed for both SA populations. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 159 patients with SA in Spain. Data were collected from medical records and directly from the patients during the study visit. Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ)-5 was used to classify patients with controlled and uncontrolled SA. RESULTS Most of the patients were female (72.0% uncontrolled SA and 63.6% controlled SA). The mean (SD) EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D-5L) score was 0.88 (0.14) and 0.70 (0.25) in controlled and uncontrolled SA, respectively. The mean (SD) Asthma Quality-of-Life-5D (AQL-5D) score was 0.93 (0.09) and 0.85 (0.09) in controlled and uncontrolled SA, respectively. Emergency visits (19.2 vs. 2.7%) and hospitalizations (7.7% vs. no hospitalization) were more common among uncontrolled SA than controlled SA. Mean (SD) number of visits to primary care and pneumologists in uncontrolled SA vs. controlled SA was 4.1 (2.8) vs. 2.5 (3.0) and 3.7 (3.5) vs. 2.8 (2.2), respectively. CONCLUSION The study provides data on utility measures among patients with SA in Spain for the first time. Patients with uncontrolled SA had lower HRQoL and higher HCRU than patients with controlled SA. Therefore, the implementation of measures that improve HRQoL among patients with uncontrolled SA is highly recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some patients with asthma demonstrate normal spirometry and remain undiagnosed without further testing. OBJECTIVE To determine clinical predictors of asthma in symptomatic adults with normal spirometry, and to generate a tool to help clinicians decide who should undergo bronchial challenge testing (BCT). METHODS Using random-digit dialling and population-based case-finding, we recruited adults from the community with respiratory symptoms and no previous history of diagnosed lung disease. Participants with normal pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry subsequently underwent BCT. Asthma was diagnosed in those with symptoms and a methacholine provocative concentration (PC20) of < 8 mg/ml. Sputum and blood eosinophils, and exhaled nitric oxide were measured. Univariate analyses identified potentially predictive variables, which were then used to construct a multivariable logistic regression model to predict asthma. Model sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) were calculated. RESULTS Of 132 symptomatic individuals with normal spirometry, 34 (26%) had asthma. Of those ultimately diagnosed with asthma, 33 (97%) answered 'yes' to a question asking whether they experienced cough, chest tightness or wheezing provoked by exercise or cold air. Other univariate predictors of asthma included female sex, pre-bronchodilator FEV1 percentage predicted, and percent positive change in FEV1 post bronchodilator. A multivariable model containing these predictive variables yielded an AUC of 0.82 (95% CI: 0.72-0.91), a sensitivity of 82%, and a specificity of 66%. The model was used to construct a nomogram to advise clinicians which patients should be prioritized for BCT. CONCLUSIONS Four readily available patient characteristics demonstrated a high sensitivity and AUC for predicting undiagnosed asthma in symptomatic adults with normal pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry. These characteristics can potentially help clinicians to decide which individuals with normal spirometry should be investigated with bronchial challenge testing. However, further prospective validation of our decision tool is required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether cesarean section (CS) is a risk factor for asthma in offspring is controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between CS and asthma in children/adolescents. METHODS Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched for cohort studies on the relationship between mode of delivery and asthma in children/adolescents up to February 2023. Birth via CS was considered an exposure factor. Asthma incidence was taken as a result. RESULTS Thirty-five cohort studies (thirteen prospective and twenty-two retrospective cohort studies) were included. The results showed that the incidence of asthma was higher in CS offspring (odds ratio (OR) = 1.18, P < 0.001) than in the vaginal delivery (VD) group. Partial subgroup analyses showed a higher incidence of asthma in female offspring born via CS (OR = 1.26, P < 0.001) compared with the VD group, while there was no difference in males (OR = 1.07, P = 0.325). Asthma incidence was higher in CS offspring than in the VD group in Europe (OR = 1.20, P < 0.001), North America (OR = 1.15, P < 0.001), and Oceania (OR = 1.06, P = 0.008). This trend was not found in the Asian population (OR = 1.17, P = 0.102). The incidence of atopic asthma was higher in offspring born via CS (OR = 1.14, P < 0.001) compared to the VD group. The CS group had a higher incidence of persistent asthma, but the difference did not reach statistical significance (OR = 1.15, P = 0.063). CONCLUSION In this meta-analysis, CS may be a risk factor for asthma in offspring children/adolescents compared with VD. The relationship between CS and asthma was influenced by sex and region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mast cells (MCs) develop from a rare population of peripheral blood circulating MC progenitors (MCps). Here, we investigated whether the frequency of circulating MCps is altered in asthma patients sensitized to birch pollen during pollen season, compared to out of season. METHODS Asthma patients were examined during birch pollen season in late April to early June (May), and out of season in November-January. Spirometry measurements, asthma and allergy-related symptoms, asthma control questionnaire (ACQ), and asthma control test (ACT) scores were assessed at both time points. The MCp frequency was determined by flow cytometry in ficoll-separated blood samples from patients with positive birch pollen-specific IgE, and analyzed in relation to basic and disease parameters. RESULTS The frequency of MCps per liter of blood was higher in May than in November (p = .004), particularly in women (p = .009). Patients that reported moderate to severe asthma symptoms (<.0001), nose or eye symptoms (p = .02; p = .01), or reduced asthma control (higher ACQ, p = .01) had higher MCp frequency in May than those that did not report this. These associations remained significant after adjusting for sex and BMI. The change in asthma control to a lower ACT score in May correlated with an increase in MCp frequency in May (p = .006, rho = 0.46). CONCLUSIONS The data suggest that the frequency of MCps increases in symptomatic patients with allergic asthma. Our results unravel a link between asthma symptoms and circulating MCps, and bring new insight into the impact of natural allergen exposure on the expansion of MCs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Asthma is one of the most common long-term conditions in the world, with New Zealand (NZ) having one of the highest rates of asthma symptoms. Despite the significant burden of asthma in NZ, there is a lack of data on asthma exacerbation rates in NZ and how these have varied over time. This study is a national population-based study of asthma exacerbation rates in NZ between 2010 and 2019, and explores how these rates vary amongst different demographic groups. METHODS A retrospective population-based observational cohort study covering the ten years 2010-2019 to determine asthma prevalence, and asthma exacerbation and hospitalisation rates, using de-identified data from five national healthcare datasets. Exacerbations were defined based on hospital discharge diagnoses or oral corticosteroid dispensing. RESULTS Total number of patients with asthma was 447,797 in 2010 to 512,627 in 2019, equating to approximately 10% of the population. Of these 19.4% experienced an exacerbation in 2010 (a population rate of 376.2 per 1000 patient-years); this exacerbation rate increased to 25.1% in 2019 (438.3 per 1000 patient-years). Exacerbations rates were consistently higher for females than males, and among Pacific peoples and Māori. In contrast, hospital admissions 25% lower in 2019 than 2010, decreasing from 1.4% to 0.9%, however over 50% of these admissions were in Māori and Pacific peoples. CONCLUSION Asthma exacerbation rates in NZ have increased over 2010-2019, however hospitalisation rates have decreased. This potentially suggests a move away from secondary to primary care management of exacerbations and provides important information for asthma care planning.

Abstract
Objectives: There is inconsistent evidence on the relationship between pesticide exposure and childhood respiratory outcomes in non-agricultural settings. This study investigated the association between organophosphate (OP) pesticide exposure and asthma-related outcomes in children residing in four informal settlements. Methods: The study was a longitudinal study of 590 schoolchildren, with a 12 months follow-up period. A standardised questionnaire adopted from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood was administered to caregivers for child's respiratory symptoms and household characteristics. Spirometry and fractional-exhaled nitric oxide, including a phadiatop test (atopy status) and urinary dialkyl phosphate (DAP) metabolites were measured at baseline and follow-up. DAP metabolites included diethylphosphate (DEP) and dimethyl phosphate (DMP) measured at baseline and follow-up and dimethylthiophosphate (DMTP) measured only at baseline. Results: The mean ages of schoolchildren were 9.9 ± 0.91 years and the overal incidence proportions of new doctor diagnosed asthma was 2.2%. No consistent patterns of increased risk of asthma outcomes with increasing DAP concentrations was found in multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Future studies with longer follow-up periods and repeated OP biomonitoring are recommended.

Abstract
Protein glycosylation is a widespread posttranslational modification that can impact the function of proteins. Dysregulated protein glycosylation has been linked to several diseases, including chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs). CRDs pose a significant public health threat globally, affecting the airways and other lung structures. Emerging researches suggest that glycosylation plays a significant role in regulating inflammation associated with CRDs. This review offers an overview of the abnormal glycoenzyme activity and corresponding glycosylation changes involved in various CRDs, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary arterial hypertension, non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, and lung cancer. Additionally, this review summarizes recent advances in glycomics and glycoproteomics-based protein glycosylation analysis of CRDs. The potential of glycoenzymes and glycoproteins for clinical use in the diagnosis and treatment of CRDs is also discussed.

Abstract
This cohort study sought to investigate the effects of phthalates exposure during pregnancy on offspring asthma and its association with placental stress and inflammatory factor mRNA expression levels. A total of 3474 pregnant women from the China Ma'anshan birth cohort participated in this study. Seven phthalate metabolites were detected in urine samples during pregnancy by solid phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Placenta stress and inflammation mRNA expression were assessed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Early pregnancy may be the critical period when phthalates exposure increases the risk of asthma in infants and young children, and there is a certain gender difference in the risk of asthma in infants and young children. Moreover, through the placenta stress and inflammatory factor associated with infant asthma found anti-inflammatory factor of interleukin-10 (IL-10) mRNA expression will reduce the risk of 36-month-old male infant asthma. The expression of interleukin-4(IL-4) and macrophage (M2) biomarker cluster of differentiation 206(CD206) mRNA reduced the risk of asthma in 18-month-old female infants. Placental stress and inflammatory response were analyzed using mediating effects. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) showed a complete mediating effect between mono-benzyl phthalate (MBzP) exposure in early pregnancy and asthma in 12-month-old males, and IL-10 also showed a complete mediating effect between mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP) exposure in early and late pregnancy and asthma in 36-month-old males. In summary, exposure to phthalates during pregnancy may contribute to the development of asthma in infants, which may be associated with placental stress and inflammation.

Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds in Exhaled Breath Following a COMEX-30 Treatment Table. Metabolites 2023; 13:metabo13030316. Abstract
The COMEX-30 hyperbaric treatment table is used to manage decompression sickness in divers but may result in pulmonary oxygen toxicity (POT). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath are early markers of hyperoxic stress that may be linked to POT. The present study assessed whether VOCs following COMEX-30 treatment are early markers of hyperoxic stress and/or POT in ten healthy, nonsmoking volunteers. Because more oxygen is inhaled during COMEX-30 treatment than with other treatment tables, this study hypothesized that VOCs exhaled following COMEX-30 treatment are indicators of POT. Breath samples were collected before and 0.5, 2, and 4 h after COMEX-30 treatment. All subjects were followed-up for signs of POT or other symptoms. Nine compounds were identified, with four (nonanal, decanal, ethyl acetate, and tridecane) increasing 33–500% in intensity from before to after COMEX-30 treatment. Seven subjects reported pulmonary symptoms, five reported out-of-proportion tiredness and transient ear fullness, and four had signs of mild dehydration. All VOCs identified following COMEX-30 treatment have been associated with inflammatory responses or pulmonary diseases, such as asthma or lung cancer. Because most subjects reported transient pulmonary symptoms reflecting early-stage POT, the identified VOCs are likely markers of POT, not just hyperbaric hyperoxic exposure.

Prevalence and influencing factors of wheeze and asthma among preschool children in Urumqi city: a cross-sectional survey. Sci Rep 2023; 13:2263. Abstract
To investigate the prevalence and indoor environmental influencing factors of wheeze and asthma among preschool children in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China to provide a strong basis for prevention and control. In August 2019, a cross-sectional study involving 8153 preschool children was conducted in 60 kindergartens in Urumqi. The ALLHOME-2 questionnaire was used for childhood wheeze and asthma survey, and the dampness in buildings and health (DBH) questionnaire was used for the childhood home dwelling and living environment survey. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression was then used to analyze the potential influencing factors of childhood asthma and wheeze. The prevalence of wheeze and asthma in children was 4.7% and 2.0%, respectively. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression results suggested that ethnicity other than the Han Chinese (odds ratio (OR) 1.39, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05-1.84), caesarean section (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.00-1.53), family history of asthma (OR 5.00, 95% CI 3.36-7.44), carpet or floor bedding at home (OR 1.40, 95% CI 1.05-1.87), purchasing new furniture in the mother's residence during pregnancy (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.06-2.36), pet keeping in the residence at aged 0-1 year (OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.13-2.13), passive smoking by child in the current residence (OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.01-1.80), and having mould or hygroma in the child's residence at aged 0-1 year (OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.12-2.64) were risk factors for wheeze. In addition, Girls (OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.59-0.90) was a protective factor for wheeze. Caesarean section (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.06-2.00), family history of asthma (OR 7.06, 95% CI 4.33-11.53), carpet or floor bedding at home (OR 2.20, 95% CI 1.50-3.23), and pet keeping in the residence at aged 0-1 year (OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.04-1.83) were risk factors for asthma, whereas Girls (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.42-0.80) was a protective factor for asthma. This survey indicates that the purchase of new furniture, the placement of carpet or floor bedding in the child's residence, the pets keeping, room dampness or moldy phenomena, and passive smoking may all contribute to an elevated risk of wheeze or asthma in children.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Early-life antibiotic exposure is common and impacts the development of the child's microbiome and immune system. Information on the impacts of early-life antibiotics exposure on childhood asthma is lacking. METHODS This study examined associations between early-life (0-24 months) antibiotics exposure with childhood (6-15 years) asthma trajectories through the Australian Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) and their linked data from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Asthma phenotypes were derived by group-based trajectory modeling. RESULTS Of 5107 LSAC participants, 4318 were included in the final analyses (84.6% retention). Four asthma phenotypes were identified: Always-low-risk (79.0%), early-resolving asthma (7.1%), early-persistent asthma (7.9%), and late-onset asthma (6.0%). Any early-life antibiotic exposure increased risk 2.3-fold (95% CI: 1.47-3.67; p < 0.001) for early-persistent asthma among all children. In subgroup analyses, early-persistent asthma risk increased by 2.7-fold with any second-generation cephalosporin exposure, and by 2-fold with any β-lactam other than cephalosporin or macrolide exposure. CONCLUSION We concluded that early-life antibiotic exposure is associated with an increased risk of early-persistent childhood asthma. This reinforces scrutiny of early-life antibiotic use, particularly for common viral infections where no antibiotics are required.

Abstract
Purpose Asthma is a chronic heterogeneous respiratory disease resulting from a complex interplay between genetic variations and environmental exposures. There are sex disparities in the prevalence and severity of asthma in males and females. Asthma prevalence is higher in males during childhood but increases in females in adulthood. The mechanisms underlying these sex differences are not well understood; nevertheless, genetic variations, hormonal changes, and environmental influences are thought to play important roles. This study aimed to identify sex-specific genetic variants associated with asthma using CLSA genomic and questionnaire data. Methods First, we conducted a genome-wide SNP-by-sex interaction analysis on 23,323 individuals, examining 416,562 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) after quality control, followed by sex-stratified survey logistic regression of SNPs with interaction p-value less than 10¯5. Results Out of the 49 SNPs with interaction p-value less than 10-5, a sex-stratified survey logistic regression showed that five male-specific SNPs (rs6701638, rs17071077, rs254804, rs6013213, and rs2968822) in/near KIF26B, NMBR, PEPD, RTN4, and NFATC2 loci, and three female-specific SNPs (rs2968801, rs2864052, and rs9525931) in/near RTN4, and SERP2 loci were significantly associated with asthma after Bonferroni correction. An SNP (rs36213) in the EPHB1 gene was significantly associated with an increased risk of asthma in males [OR=1.35, 95% CI (1.14, 1.60)] but with a reduced risk of asthma in females [OR=0.84, 95% CI (0.76, 0.92)] after Bonferroni correction. Conclusion We discovered novel sex-specific genetic markers in/near the KIF26B, RTN4, EPHB1, NMBR, SERP2, PEPD, and NFATC2 genes that could potentially shed light on the sex differences in asthma susceptibility in males and females. Future mechanistic studies are required to understand better the underlying sex-related pathways of the identified loci in asthma development.

Abstract
Purpose ATLAS ASMA described the psychosocial impact of asthma on patients' daily life from patients' perspectives (in terms of impaired personal and intimate relationships, sleep quality, leisure time, daily activities, and others) in Spain. Secondary objective includes description of time since diagnosis, expectations, and satisfaction of patients about disease, treatment and medical assistance received, adherence to treatment, perceived control of asthma, and health-related quality of life. Patients and Methods This was a cross-sectional, observational study, based on a self-administered online survey for adult patients (≥18 years) with asthma. Patients with asthma diagnosis of any type and severity who voluntarily participated in the survey through a web link were included consecutively. In the present manuscript, only adult patients' data are included. Results A total of 132 adults with asthma were included. Moderate/severe asthma constituted 59.1% of the patients (females 71.2%). Overall, most relevant areas affected due to asthma were leisure activities (67.0%) and the quality/quantity of sleep (52.3%). Moderate/severe patients perceived some degree of impairment in work, school, or at home due asthma more frequently vs mild patients (55.2% vs 10.9%). Poorly controlled asthma (ACT≤19) was reported in 41 (70.7%) and 10 (21.7%) moderate/severe and mild patients (p<0.000), respectively. Mild patients obtained higher mean (SD) Mini-AQLQ score than moderate/severe asthma patients (5.6 [1.0] vs 4.3 [1.1], p<0.000), likewise higher significant results for every individual dimension. Most patients cited little limitation to intense efforts (20.5%). Half of the patients mentioned needing more information about asthma. Topics those patients like to have more information were difficulties that may can have and legal topics (78.6%), asthma evolution (78.6%), secondary effects or issues related to the treatment (61.9%) and legal topics (61.9%). Conclusion The study reported important insights on psychosocial impact of asthma on patients' daily life from patients' perspectives along with health determinants in asthma-related health outcomes, sociodemographic and psychosocial factors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Physical inactivity is common in asthma and is recognised as an important modifiable risk for poor clinical outcomes such as impaired asthma control and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Despite evidence supporting the role of physical activity in reducing the risk of these outcomes, little is known about optimal interventions for increasing physical activity in those with severe disease. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of interventions in increasing physical activity in severe asthma. METHODS MEDLINE, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, PubMed, Informit, SPORTDiscus and Cochrane databases were searched up to September 2021 for physical activity-based intervention studies that assessed physical activity outcomes (e.g. steps per day, time spent undertaking physical activity) in adults with severe asthma. Data on asthma-related (e.g. asthma control) and health-related outcomes (e.g. HRQoL) were assessed as secondary outcomes. The revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used to assess risk of bias. Random-effects meta-analyses synthesised data where possible. RESULTS Four randomised controlled trials (all 12 weeks in duration) including 176 adults with moderate-to-severe asthma were included. An increase in physical activity was reported with a moderate-vigorous intensity aerobic and resistance training intervention (steps per day and time spent undertaking physical activity), and an unsupervised pedometer-based intervention (steps per day). Meta-analyses showed that physical activity interventions had an overall positive effect on steps per day (mean difference (MD) 1588, 95% CI 399-2778; p=0.009, I2=23), asthma control (MD -0.65, 95% CI -0.95--0.35; p<0.0001, I2=0%) and HRQoL (MD 0.56, 95% CI 0.10-1.01; p=0.02, I2=16%) compared to control. CONCLUSION While there is some evidence supporting the effectiveness of interventions in improving physical activity in adults with severe asthma, higher-quality, large-scale studies of longer duration are needed to determine the optimal intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify factors associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory symptoms, in Brumadinho, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, after a dam rupture. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study, including a representative sample of adults (aged 18 years and over) in the municipality. Associations were assessed between dependent variables (medical diagnosis of asthma and COPD; symptoms of wheezing, dry cough, and nose irritation) and exploratory variables (sex, age group, smoking habit, having worked at Vale S.A. company before the dam rupture, time and area of residence in relation to the dam rupture). Logistic regression models with odds ratio (OR) calculation and 95% confidence interval were used. RESULTS We identified a prevalence of 7.2% of asthma; 3.5% of COPD; 8.8% of wheezing; 23.6% of dry cough; and 31.8% of nose irritation. We observed a greater chance of asthma among women and residents in the affected and mining regions, while a greater chance of COPD was observed in smokers and in those with longer time of residence in the municipality. Among the symptoms, we verified a higher chance of nose irritation among women, while a higher chance of wheezing and dry cough were found among smokers (current and former). Residents of regions affected by the mud reported a greater chance of presenting all the analyzed symptoms. Conversely, level of education was negatively associated with wheezing and dry cough. CONCLUSION We found respiratory changes and identified the groups most vulnerable to developing them, which could contribute to directing actions to reduce the population's respiratory problems.

Abstract
Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases and is a public health problem worldwide. It is a long-standing condition affecting the respiratory system. Thus this study aimed to assess the severity of asthma in patients at the adult emergency department of Jimma Medical Center (JMC), Southwest Ethiopia. A one year (1 May, 2020, to 1 May, 2021) retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 189 patients at the adult emergency department of JMC. Data were collected between 25 July, 2021 to 25 August, 2021 by two Bachelor of Science degree holders in nursing (BSC) nurses after providing proper training. We used structured checklist that was obtained from previous studies to collect the data. Finally, data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 then exported to Stata version 15.0 for further analysis. Multinomial analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between risk factors and severity of asthma. Of 195 patients retrieved from the Health management information system (HMIS) logbook and patient profile, 189 fulfilled the eligibility criteria giving a response rate of 96.9%. The mean age of patients was 47.69 (± 19.02) years old ranging from 20 to 85. More than one third of the patients were age range of 20-39 years. Only more than half of the patients were women. Almost 46% of the patients had moderate asthma. Being male, merchant and government employees had lower odds of asthma than their counterparts whereas being daily laborers and smoking contributed to increased odds of moderate asthma. Patients' age and comorbidities had increased odds of severe asthma in relation to the participants of their reference category. Urban residents had decreased odds of severe asthma compared to their rural counterparts. This study highlights that majority of patients had moderate asthma. Health care providers should pay special attention to accurately diagnosing asthma according to its severity which is essential to the optimal management of asthma. This study calls JMC health care providers to give due attention while providing routine care for their patients in accordance to identified factors.

Abstract
Background Globally, a high-salt diet (HSD) has become a threat to human health as it can lead to a high risk of cardiac damage. Although some studies investigating HSD have been carried out, the majority has been conducted in males, and there are few female-specific studies, thereby ignoring any effects of sex-specific damage on the heart. In this study, we determined how HSD induces different pathways of cardiovascular diseases through sex-specific effects on cardiac damage in mice. Methods An HSD murine model of male and female C57BL/6J mice was fed with sodium-rich chow (4% NaCl). After 8 weeks, cardiac tissues were collected, and the whole gene transcriptome of the hearts of male and female mice was characterized and analyzed using high-throughput RNA sequencing. Immunohistochemistry staining was used to further assess the harmful effects of HSD on protein expression of genes associated with immunity, fibrosis, and apoptosis in male and female mice. Results HSD drastically altered the cardiac transcriptome compared to that of the normal heart in both male and female mice and had a sex-specific effect on the cardiac composition in the transcriptome. HSD produced various differentially expressed genes and affected different KEGG pathways of the transcriptome in male and female mice. Furthermore, we found that HSD induced different pathways of cardiovascular disease in the male mice and female mice. The pathway of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is significantly enriched in HSD-treated male mice, while the pathway of dilated cardiomyopathy is significantly enriched in HSD-treated female mice. Finally, metabolism, immunity, fibrosis, and apoptosis in the mouse heart showed sex-specific changes predicting cardiac damage. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that HSD adversely impacts cardiac structure and function by affecting the metabolism, immunity, fibrosis, and apoptosis in the murine heart and induces the mouse to suffer from sex-specific cardiovascular disease. This study provides a new perspective and basis for the differences in the pharmacology and interventional treatment of sex-specific cardiovascular diseases induced by HSD in men and women.

Abstract
Abstract Sex presents a vital determinant of a person’s physiology, anatomy, and development. Recent clinical studies indicate that sex is also involved in the differential manifestation of various diseases, affecting both clinical outcome as well as response to therapy. Genetic and epigenetic changes are implicated in sex bias and regulate disease onset, including the inactivation of the X chromosome as well as sex chromosome aneuploidy. The differential expression of X-linked genes, along with the presence of sex-specific hormones, exhibits a significant impact on immune system function. Several studies have revealed differences between the two sexes in response to infections, including respiratory diseases and COVID-19 infection, autoimmune disorders, liver fibrosis, neuropsychiatric diseases, and cancer susceptibility, which can be explained by sex-biased immune responses. In the present review, we explore the input of genetic and epigenetic interplay in the sex bias underlying disease manifestation and discuss their effects along with sex hormones on disease development and progression, aiming to reveal potential new therapeutic targets. Key messages Sex is involved in the differential manifestation of various diseases. Epigenetic modifications influence X-linked gene expression, affecting immune response to infections, including COVID-19. Epigenetic mechanisms are responsible for the sex bias observed in several respiratory and autoimmune disorders, liver fibrosis, neuropsychiatric diseases, and cancer.

Abstract
Recent progress in RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) allows us to explore whole-genome gene expression profiles and to develop predictive model for disease risk. The objective of this study was to develop and validate an RNA-seq-based transcriptomic risk score (RSRS) for disease risk prediction that can simultaneously accommodate demographic information. We analyzed RNA-seq gene expression data from 441 asthmatic and 254 non-asthmatic samples. Logistic least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) regression analysis in the training set identified 73 differentially expressed genes (DEG) to form a weighted RSRS that discriminated asthmatics from healthy subjects with area under the curve (AUC) of 0.80 in the testing set after adjustment for age and gender. The 73-gene RSRS was validated in three independent RNA-seq datasets and achieved AUCs of 0.70, 0.77 and 0.60, respectively. To explore their biological and molecular functions in asthma phenotype, we examined the 73 genes by enrichment pathway analysis and found that these genes were significantly (p < 0.0001) enriched for DNA replication, recombination, and repair, cell-to-cell signaling and interaction, and eumelanin biosynthesis and developmental disorder. Further in-silico analyses of the 73 genes using Connectivity map shows that drugs (mepacrine, dactolisib) and genetic perturbagens (PAK1, GSR, RBM15 and TNFRSF12A) were identified and could potentially be repurposed for treating asthma. These findings show the promise for RNA-seq risk scores to stratify and predict disease risk.

Abstract
Chronic lung diseases are the third leading cause of death worldwide and are increasing in prevalence over time. Although much of our traditional understanding of health and disease is derived from study of the male of the species - be it animal or human - there is increasing evidence that sex and gender contribute to differences in disease risk, prevalence, presentation, severity, treatment approach, response and outcomes. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and bronchiectasis represent the most prevalent and studied chronic lung diseases and have key sex- and gender-based differences which are critical to consider and incorporate into clinical and research approaches. Mechanistic differences present opportunities for therapeutic development whereas behavioural and clinical differences on the part of patients and providers present opportunities for greater education and understanding at multiple levels. In this review, we seek to summarise the sex- and gender-based differences in key chronic lung diseases and outline the clinical and research implications for stakeholders.

Abstract
Background: It is known that socioeconomic factors affect various chronic diseases and also might affect asthma control. Exposure to house-cleaning products has been shown to impact both the onset and control of asthma. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of socioeconomic factors and house cleaning on asthma control of women with asthma. Methods: Adult women with asthma (N = 204) with informed consent were included in this single-center, cross-sectional observational study. A questionnaire, including items related to demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic features of the patients, was administered with a face-to-face interview by an investigator. A test to assess the level of asthma control was used to classify the patients as uncontrolled, partially controlled, and fully controlled. Wealth perception was measured with a visual analog scale. Investigated socioeconomic features were household size, monthly household income, education status, working status, occupation, and education status of the mothers of the patients. Results: Of the 204 adult female patients, 68.6% had uncontrolled, 14.7% had partially controlled, and 16.7% had fully controlled asthma. Partially or fully controlled asthma was higher (odds ratio [OR] 2.6 [95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-6.22]) in the highest income quantile compared with the lowest income quantile. Asthma was better controlled in women with a visual analog scale score of wealth perception ≥ 7 (OR 1.93 [95% CI, 1.04-3.59]) and, in those who cleaned their houses, one to two times per week compared with zero times per week (OR 2.94 [95% CI, 1.19-7.26]). Conclusion: Having a higher household income was the only socioeconomic factor associated with better asthma control. After adjusting for age, duration of asthma, and comorbidities, better asthma control was significantly associated with cleaning the house one to two times a week.

Abstract
Asthma is a frequent medical condition in adolescence. The worsening of the most common symptoms perimenstrually is defined as perimenstrual asthma (PMA). The cause of PMA remains unclear, but a role for hormonal milieu is plausible. Data on PMA in adolescents are limited, and its management is not fully established. We aimed to discuss the PMA phenomenon in young females from pathophysiology to preventive strategies, focusing on the relationship with the hormonal pattern. The fluctuation of estrogens at ovulation and before menstruation and the progesterone secretion during the luteal phase and its subsequent withdrawal seem to be the culprits, because the deterioration of asthma is cyclical during the luteal phase and/or during the first days of the menstrual cycle. Conventional asthma therapies are not always effective for PMA. Preventive strategies may include innovative hormonal contraception. Even a possible beneficial effect of other hormonal treatments, including estrogens, progestogens, and androgens, as well as leukotriene receptor antagonists and explorative approach using microbial-directed therapy, is considered. The underlying mechanisms, through which sex-hormone fluctuations influence asthma symptoms, represent a challenge in the clinical management of such a distressing condition. Further studies focused on young females are mandatory to promote adolescent health.

RESUMO: Objetivo: Identificar fatores associados a asma, doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica (DPOC) e sintomas respiratórios em Brumadinho (MG), após rompimento de barragem. Métodos: Estudo transversal com amostra representativa de adultos. Verificaram-se associações entre variáveis dependentes (diagnóstico médico de asma e DPOC e os sintomas chiado no peito, tosse seca e irritação nasal) e variáveis exploratórias (sexo, faixa etária, tabagismo, ter trabalhado na Vale S.A. antes do rompimento da barragem, tempo e área de residência em relação ao rompimento da barragem). Modelos de regressão logística com cálculo da odds ratio e intervalo de confiança de 95% foram empregados. Resultados: Identificou-se prevalência de asma de 7,2%, de DPOC de 3,5%, de chiado no peito de 8,8%, de tosse seca de 23,6% e de irritação nasal de 31,8%. Maior chance de asma foi observada no sexo feminino e nos residentes em área diretamente atingida pela lama e área de mineração, enquanto maior chance de DPOC foi vista nos fumantes e naqueles com maior tempo de residência no município. Entre os sintomas, maior chance de irritação nasal foi observada no sexo feminino, e de chiado no peito e tosse seca em fumantes (atuais e no passado). Residentes em área atingida pela lama relataram maior chance de apresentarem todos os sintomas analisados. Já a escolaridade apresentou associação negativa com chiado no peito e tosse seca. Conclusão: O estudo mostrou alterações respiratórias e identificou os grupos com maior vulnerabilidade para desenvolvê-las, podendo contribuir com o direcionamento de ações para a redução de problemas respiratórios da população.

Abstract
Sex is a biological concept determined at conception. Gender is a social concept. Medicine recognises sex as a biological variable and recommends including sex as a factor in clinical practice norms and as a topic of bench and clinical research. Sex plays a role in respiratory physiology according to two pathways: hormones and anatomy, with females characterised by smaller dimensions at every level of the respiratory system. Sex hormones also play specific roles in lung inflammatory processes, breathing control and in response to diseases. The literature is extremely controversial because many factors need to be considered to avoid erroneous comparisons. The main difficulty lies in creating homogeneous groups of subjects according to age, body weight, lung/airway size, fluctuations in circulating hormone levels, and exercise protocol. Because almost all of the knowledge available in physiology is based on research in males, medicine for women is therefore less evidence-based than that being applied to men. Finally, the number of transsexual people is increasing and they represent new challenges for clinicians, due to the anatomical and physiological changes that they undergo.

Abstract
Introduction: Susceptibility factors for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) include sex and medical conditions such as asthma and rhinitis. DNA methylation (DNAm) is associated with asthma, rhinitis, and several viruses. We examined associations of asthma/rhinitis with DNAm at CpGs located on coronavirus related genes, and if these associations were sex-specific. Methods: In total, n = 242 subjects aged 26 years from the Isle of Wight Birth Cohort were included in the study. Linear regressions were used to examine sex specific and non-specific associations of DNAm at CpGs on coronavirus related genes with asthma/rhinitis status. Associations of DNAm with gene expression in blood were assessed for functional relevance of identified CpGs. Results: Statistically significant interaction effects of asthma or rhinitis with sex were identified at 40 CpGs for asthma and 27 CpGs for rhinitis. At 21 CpGs, DNAm was associated with asthma, and at 45 CpGs with rhinitis, regardless of sex. Assessment of functional relevance of the identified CpGs indicated a potential of epigenetic regulatory functionality on gene activity at 14 CpGs for asthma and 17 CpGs for rhinitis, and of those 6 CpGs for asthma and 7 CpGs for rhinitis were likely to be sex-specific. Conclusion: Subjects with asthma/rhinitis may have altered susceptibility to COVID-19 due to changes in their DNAm associated with these conditions. Sex specificity on association of asthma/rhinitis with DNAm at certain CpGs, and on the association of DNAm at asthma/rhinitis-linked CpGs with gene expression have the potential to explain the reported sex-specificity in COVID-19 morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of allergic diseases (ADs), such as asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR), is increasing worldwide in both adults and children. Although ADs are common and frequently coexist in outpatient care, city-level data regarding the characteristics of childhood AD remain limited in China. This study aimed to assess the profile and characteristics of ADs in the city of Shanghai. Methods A multicenter retrospective study was designed to collect routine administrative data from outpatient and emergency departments from 66 hospitals in Shanghai, China, from 2016 to 2018. Children with asthma, AR, allergic conjunctivitis (AC), and allergic skin diseases were investigated. Demographic characteristics, patients visit pattern, spectrum of diagnosis, and comorbidities were analyzed. Results A total of 2,376,150 outpatient and emergency visits for ADs were included in the period from 2016 to 2018. Allergic skin diseases accounted for 38.9%, followed by asthma (34.8%), AR (22.9%), and AC (3.3%), with a male predominance in all four diseases. Asthma and allergic skin diseases were most frequent in the 1 to < 4 years of age group, while AR and AC were more common in the 4 to < 7 years of age group. Asthma accounted for the greatest number of annual and emergency visits. The most frequent comorbidity of asthma was lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) (49.3%), followed by AR (20.5%) and upper respiratory tract infection (14.1%). The most common comorbidities of AR were otitis media (23.4%), adenoid hypertrophy/obstructive sleep apnea (22.1%), followed by LRTI (12.1%), asthma (9.4%) and chronic pharyngitis (8.9%). Conclusions Asthma and allergic skin diseases were the most common ADs in outpatient and emergency departments in the study period. Respiratory tract infection was the most common comorbidity of asthma in children. More attention should be devoted to the treatment of comorbidities to improve childhood AD outcomes with a better understanding of the characteristics of ADs in outpatient care. Abstract
Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) have a negative impact on human health and are widely distributed in China. As part of the China, Children, Home, Health (CCHH) study, we investigated the associations between childhood asthmatic symptoms and PAEs in settled house dust in Shanghai, China. We found that di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) were abundant in the indoor environment. A total of 27 % of children suffered from diagnosed asthma. The Mann-Whitney U test and multiple logistic regression were used to obtain the associations between PAEs and childhood asthmatic symptoms. Stratification analysis was performed to reveal the influence of gender on the associations between PAE exposure and target symptoms. Compared with low concentrations of PAEs, high concentrations of high molecular weight PAEs (HMW-PAEs) were significantly associated with childhood diagnosed asthma (adjusted odds ratios (AORs) > 1, P < 0.05). Moreover, significantly negative associations were found between high concentrations of DiBP and current cough (AORs<1, P < 0.05). All significantly positive associations were observed among girls, and most of the associations of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and diethyl phthalate (DEP) exposure with the studied symptoms among girls were higher than those among boys. Exposure to PAEs may be a risk factor for asthmatic symptoms in children, especially in girls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have simultaneously assessed the health impact of school and home environmental factors on children, since handling multiple highly correlated environmental variables is challenging. In this study, we examined indoor home and school environments in relation to health outcomes using machine learning methods and logistic regression. METHODS We used the data collected by the SINPHONIE (Schools Indoor Pollution and Health: Observatory Network in Europe) project in Romania, a multicenter European research study that collected comprehensive information on school and home environments, health symptoms in children, smoking, and school policies. The health outcomes were categorized as: any health symptoms, asthma, allergy and flu-like symptoms. Both logistic regression and random forest (RF) methods were used to predict the four categories of health outcomes, and the methods prediction performance was compared. RESULTS The RF method we employed for analysis showed that common risk factors for the investigated categories of health outcomes, included: environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), dampness in the indoor school environment, male gender, air freshener use, residence located in proximity of traffic (<200 m), stressful schoolwork, and classroom noise (contributions ranged from 7.91% to 23.12%). Specificity, accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) values for most outcomes were higher when using RF compared to logistic regression, while sensitivity was similar in both methods. CONCLUSION This study suggests that ETS, dampness in the indoor school environment, use of air fresheners, living in proximity to traffic (<200 m) and noise are common environmental risk factors for the investigated health outcomes. RF pointed out better predictive values, sensitivity and accuracy compared to logistic regression.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim was to investigate if menstruation and use of exogenous sex hormones influence self-reported asthma related quality of life (QoL) and asthma control.Methods: The study is based on two asthma cohorts randomly selected in primary and secondary care. A total of 622 female patients 18-65 years were included and classified as premenopausal ≤46 years (n = 338) and peri/postmenopausal 47-65 years (n = 284). Questionnaire data from 2012 and 2014 with demographics, asthma related issues and sex hormone status. Outcome measures were Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (Mini-AQLQ) and asthma control including Asthma Control Test (ACT) and exacerbations last six months.Results: Premenopausal women with menstruation related asthma worsening, perimenstrual asthma (PMA) (9%), had a clinically relevant lower Mini-AQLQ mean score 4.9 vs. 5.8 (p < 0.001), lower asthma control with ACT score <20, 72% vs. 28% (p < 0.001) and higher exacerbation frequency 44% vs. 20% (p = 0.004) compared with women without PMA. Women with irregular menstruation had higher exacerbation frequency than women with regular menstruation (p = 0.023). Hormonal contraceptives had no impact on QoL and asthma control. Peri/postmenopausal women with menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) had a clinically relevant lower Mini-AQLQ mean score compared to those without MHT, 4.9 vs 5.4 (p < 0.001), but no differences in asthma control.Conclusion: Women with PMA had lower QoL and more uncontrolled asthma than women without PMA. Peri/postmenopausal women with MHT had lower QoL than women without MHT. Individual clinical management of women with asthma may benefit from information about their sex hormone status.

Association between Obstructive Lung Disease and Cardiovascular Disease: Results from the Vermont Diabetes Information System. JOURNAL OF RESPIRATION 2021. Abstract
The association between obstructive lung disease and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been suggested previously, but few studies have looked at this association in a diabetic cohort, a population highly susceptible to both comorbidities. A total of 1003 subjects in community practice settings were interviewed at home at the time of enrolment into the Vermont Diabetes Information System, a clinical decision support program. Patients self-reported their personal and clinical characteristics, including any obstructive lung disease. Laboratory data were obtained directly from the clinical laboratory. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of the interviewed subjects to assess a possible association between obstructive lung disease and CVD. In a multivariate logistic regression model, obstructive lung disease was significantly associated with CVD, even after correcting for potential confounders, including gender, obesity, low income, cigarette smoking, alcohol problems, and high comorbidity (odds ratio = 1.96; 95% confidence interval 1.37–2.81; p < 0.01). All components of CVD, including coronary artery disease (CAD), congestive heart failure (CHF), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), and cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), were also significantly associated with obstructive lung disease. These data suggest an association between obstructive lung disease and CVD in patients with diabetes. Future studies are needed to identify the mechanism supporting this association

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The objectives of our study were to estimate the prevalence of asthma in adults in France and to study the effects of gender on the associations of asthma with the corpulence and socio-economic characteristics of individuals. METHODS We estimated the prevalence of current asthma (asthma attack in the past 12 months or current treatment for asthma) from data collected at inclusion in the Constances cohort study in 2013-2014. Analyses were performed separately in men and women, using robust Poisson regression for multivariate analysis. RESULTS Using data from 34,100 participants in the cohort (men: 47.7 %; mean age: 44.6 years), the prevalence of current asthma was estimated to be 5.8 % (5.1 % in men, 6.4 % in women). The risk of asthma was increased in women with high body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference. In men, only a high waist circumference was associated with an increased risk of asthma. An association with low socioeconomic status was observed only among women. CONCLUSION The associations of asthma with corpulence and socioeconomic status differed between men and women. Additional analyses should provide a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for these differences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Strict countermeasures for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were undertaken in China without knowing their influence on asthma. OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations between the frequencies of asthma exacerbations and respiratory infections and air pollutants before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, which were direct consequences of countermeasures undertaken for the pandemic. METHODS Asthma exacerbations and respiratory infections among hospitalized children in the permanent population of Guangzhou City, China, from February to June 2016-2019 (before the pandemic) to February to June 2020 (during the pandemic) were collected in this cross-sectional study in Guangzhou. RESULTS The number of asthma exacerbation cases per month documented in the Guangzhou Women and Children's Hospital before (median: 13.5; range: 0-48) and during (median: 20; range: 0-34) the mitigative response to the COVID-19 pandemic was similar. The frequency of severe asthma exacerbation cases per month decreased, whereas that of mild asthma exacerbation cases per year increased (p = .004). The number of patients hospitalized with infectious respiratory diseases decreased from 146 (range: 90-172) per month before the pandemic to 42 (range: 33-57) per month during the pandemic (p = .004). Most pathogens and air pollutants decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The frequency of severe asthma exacerbations positively correlated to that of respiratory infections in children, but did not correlate to air pollutants. CONCLUSION Strict countermeasures undertaken for the pandemic were associated with a decreased the frequency of infectious respiratory diseases and severe asthma exacerbations among urban children.

Modelling maternal and perinatal risk factors to predict poorly controlled childhood asthma. PLoS One 2021; 16:e0252215. Abstract
Asthma is the most common non-communicable pulmonary condition, affecting prepubertal boys more often than girls. This study explored how maternal and perinatal risk factors are linked to poorly controlled childhood asthma in a sex dependent manner. This single centre study was performed at a metropolitan teaching hospital in Western Sydney, Australia, using electronical obstetric records from 2000 to 2017 and electronical pediatric records from 2007 to 2018. The data of 1694 children with complete entries were retrospectively analysed. Risk factors for multiple hospital admission for asthma were selected by backward-eliminated Poisson regression modelling. Selection stability of these parameters was independently confirmed using approximated exhaustive search. Sex-specific regression models indicated that most notably parity (RR[95%CI] for parity = 3; 1.85[1.22-2.81]), birth length z-score (1.45[1.23-1.70]) and birth weight z-score (0.77[0.65-0.90]) contributed to multiple asthma admissions in girls, while boys were affected most prominently by maternal BMI (e.g. BMI 35-39.9; 1.92[1.38-2.67]) and threatened preterm labor (1.68[1.10-2.58]). Allergic status was a risk factors for both boys and girls (1.47[1.18-1.83] and 1.46[1.13-1.89]). Applying ROC analysis, the predictive modelling of risk factors for hospital admissions showed an incremental increase with an AUC of 0.84 and 0.75 for girls and boys respectively for >3 hospital admissions. Multiple hospital admissions for asthma are associated with maternal and perinatal risk factors in a sex and birth order dependent manner. Hence, prospective risk stratification studies aiming to improve childhood asthma control are warranted to test the clinical utility of these parameters. Furthermore, the influence of the early in utero environment on male-female differences in other communicable and non-communicable respiratory conditions should be considered.

Abstract
Sex differences in the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system have been widely reported. These intrinsic sex differences have also been shown to modulate the pathophysiology, incidence, morbidity, and mortality of several lung diseases across the life span. In this chapter, we describe the epidemiology of sex differences in respiratory diseases including neonatal lung disease (respiratory distress syndrome, bronchopulmonary dysplasia) and pediatric and adult disease (including asthma, cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, obstructive sleep apnea, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and respiratory viral infections such as respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2). We also discuss the current state of research on the mechanisms underlying the observed sex differences in lung disease susceptibility and severity and the importance of considering both sex and gender variables in research studies' design and analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age- and sex-related differences in asthma may be due to changes in sex hormone levels. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether a change in free testosterone or free testosterone-to-estradiol ratio is associated with changes in lung function and eosinophils in the Puerto Rican youth. METHODS We tested for the association between the change in sex hormone levels and change in lung function or change in eosinophils in a prospective study of 317 children (with and without asthma) followed up from ages 6 to 14 years to ages 10 to 20 years (146 females, 171 males) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Serum levels of testosterone, estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin, and progesterone were measured at 2 study visits, approximately 4.9 years apart. Using testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin levels, we derived free testosterone and the free testosterone-to-estradiol ratio. Multivariable linear regression was used for the analysis of change in lung function and eosinophils, conducted separately by sex. RESULTS In girls, each quartile increment in the free testosterone-to-estradiol ratio was associated with a 2.03% increment in percent predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) between study visits. In males, each quartile increment in the free testosterone-to-estradiol ratio was associated with a 3.27% increment in percent predicted FEV1 and a 1.81% increment in percent predicted FEV1/FVC between study visits. In girls with asthma, an increased free testosterone-to-estradiol ratio was significantly associated with decreased eosinophils between visits (P=0.03). CONCLUSION In Puerto Rican youth, increased free testosterone-to-estradiol ratio over time was associated with an increased FEV1/FVC in both sexes, and with an increased FEV1 in males.

Abstract
Background South Africa has undergone major economic and health system changes, impacting the epidemiology of childhood asthma. This study aimed to investigate prevalence time trends of asthma in South African adolescents over two decades and to identify associated risk factors. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2017, in a randomised sample of 13–14-year-old Cape Town adolescents, using the standardised Global Asthma Network written, video and environmental questionnaires. Using time-trend analysis, the prevalence and severity of asthma were compared with data from the 2002 ISAAC phase III study. Environmental and social risk factors were analysed. Results A total of 3979 adolescents were included. The prevalence of lifetime and current asthma were 34.5% and 21.3%, respectively, on the self-report written questionnaire, similar to 2002 results. The prevalence of severe asthma in the previous 12 months increased, measured by wheeze limiting speech (7.8% to 11.8%), four or more attacks of wheezing (5.0% to 5.8%) or woken by wheeze on one or more nights per week (5.0% to 6.9%). The video questionnaire revealed increases in lifetime (16.9% to 22.5%), current (11.2% to 18.7%) and severe asthma (12.1% to 14.8%). Multivariate analysis showed associations between current asthma and smoking, female sex, pet exposure and higher socioeconomic status. Severe asthma was associated with smoking, pet exposure, outdoor pollution exposure and informal housing; 33% of those with severe or current asthma had been diagnosed. Conclusion The prevalence of asthma is high, with increasing rates of severe asthma in adolescents. Underdiagnosis is a major concern and reduction in exposure to environmental factors, particularly smoking, and improved socioeconomic development are needed. Among South African adolescents, the prevalence of asthma is high, with increasing rates of severe asthma from 1995 to 2017. Abstract
In addition to studies focused on estrogen mediation of sex-different regulation of systemic circulations, there is now increasing clinical relevance and research interests in the pulmonary circulation, in terms of sex differences in the morbidity and mortality of lung diseases such as inherent-, allergic- and inflammatory-based events. Thus, female predisposition to pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH) is an inevitable topic. To better understand the nature of sexual differentiation in the pulmonary circulation, and how heritable factors, in vivo- and/or in vitro-altered estrogen circumstances and changes in the live environment work in concert to discern the sex bias, this chapter reviews pulmonary events characterized by sex-different features, concomitant with exploration of how alterations of genetic expression and estrogen metabolisms trigger the female-predominant pathological signaling. We address the following: PAH (Sect.7.2) is characterized as an estrogenic promotion of its incidence (Sect. 7.2.2), as a function of specific germline mutations, and as an estrogen-elicited protection of its prognosis (Sect.7.2.1). More detail is provided to introduce a less recognized gene of Ephx2 that encodes soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) to degrade epoxyeicosatrienic acids (EETs). As a susceptible target of estrogen, Ephx2/sEH expression is downregulated by an estrogen-dependent epigenetic mechanism. Increases in pulmonary EETs then evoke a potentiation of PAH generation, but mitigation of its progression, a phenomenon similar to the estrogen-paradox regulation of PAH. Additionally, the female susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (Sect. 7.3) and asthma (Sect.7.4), but less preference to COVID-19 (Sect. 7.5), and roles of estrogen in their pathogeneses are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Little is known about whether DNA methylation (DNAm) of cytosine-phosphate-guanine (CpG) sites at birth predicts patterns of lung function development. We used heel prick DNAm from the F1-generation of Isle of Wight birth cohort (IOWBC-F1) for discovery of CpGs associated with lung function trajectories (forced expiratory volume in 1 s, forced vital capacity, their ratio, and forced expiratory flow at 25-75% of forced vital capacity) over the first 26 years, stratified by sex. We replicated the findings in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) using cord blood DNAm.Epigenome-wide screening was applied to identify CpGs associated with lung function trajectories in 396 boys and 390 girls of IOWBC-F1. Replication in ALSPAC focussed on lung function at ages 8, 15 and 24 years. Statistically significantly replicated CpGs were investigated for consistency in direction of association between cohorts, stability of DNAm over time in IOWBC-F1, relevant biological processes and for association with gene expression (n=161) in IOWBC F2-generation (IOWBC-F2).Differential DNAm of eight CpGs on genes GLUL, MYCN, HLX, LHX1, COBL, COL18A1, STRA6, and WNT11 involved in developmental processes, were significantly associated with lung function in the same direction in IOWBC-F1 and ALSPAC, and showed stable patterns at birth, aged 10 and 18 years between high and low lung function trajectories in IOWBC-F1. CpGs on LHX1 and COL18A1 were linked to gene expression in IOWBC-F2.In two large cohorts, novel DNAm at birth were associated with patterns of lung function in adolescence and early adulthood providing possible targets for preventative interventions against adverse pulmonary function development.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the associations of household mold and pesticide use with risk of childhood asthma and examine the potential effect modification by child's sex at a national level in the U.S. METHODS Nationally representative data were drawn from the cross-sectional 2017 and 2018 National Surveys of Children's Health. Household mold and pesticide exposures during the past 12 months and physician-diagnosed childhood asthma were assessed by standard questionnaires administered to primary caregivers. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) for current asthma, adjusting for child, caregiver, and household covariates. We also examined potential effect modification by child's sex. Sampling weights accounted for the complex survey design. RESULTS Among 41,423 U.S. children in 2017-2018, the weighted prevalence of current asthma was 10.8% in household mold-exposed children, compared with 7.2% in non-exposed children (P < 0.001). After adjusting for covariates including child's obesity, children with household mold exposure compared to those with no household mold exposure had a 1.41-fold (95% CI: 1.07, 1.87) higher odds of current asthma. Associations between household mold and current asthma were pronounced among boys (aOR 1.57; 95% CI: 1.03-2.38) but not girls (aOR 1.28; 0.90-1.83; P for interaction <0.001). No significant associations were observed between household pesticide use and current asthma, after adjusting for covariates. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that household mold is associated with current asthma among children, independent of other major risk factors including child's obesity status. Our findings may inform strategies targeting mitigation of household mold as an important indoor environment factor to address childhood asthma.

Abstract
The escalation in living standards and adoption of 'Western lifestyle' has an allied effect on the increased allergy and asthma burden in both developed and developing countries. Current scientific reports bespeak an association between allergic diseases and metabolic dysfunction; hinting toward the critical requirement of organized lifestyle and dietary habits. The ubiquitous nuclear receptors (NRs) translate metabolic stimuli into gene regulatory signals, integrating diet inflences to overall developmental and physiological processes. As a consequence of such promising attributes, nuclear receptors have historically been at the cutting edge of pharmacy world. This review discusses the recent findings that feature the cardinal importance of nuclear receptors and how they can be instrumental in modulating current asthma pharmacology. Further, it highlights a possible future employment of therapy involving dietary supplements and synthetic ligands that would engage NRs and aid in eliminating both asthma and linked comorbidities. Therefore, uncovering new and evolving roles through analysis of genomic changes would represent a feasible approach in both prevention and alleviation of asthma.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) and asthma are common ailments affecting both children and adults worldwide. Multiple studies have demonstrated an association between these two disorders. However, the exact reason for this observed association is not apparent. AREAS COVERED The current review has explored available literature and outlined multiple underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, common to both asthma and FAPDs, as possible reasons for this association. EXPERT OPINION Smooth muscle dysfunction, hypersensitivity and hyper-responsiveness, mucosal inflammation, and barrier dysfunction involving gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts are the main underlying pathophysiological mechanisms described for the generation of symptoms in FAPDs and asthma. In addition, alterations in neuroendocrine regulatory functions, immunological dysfunction, and microbial dysbiosis have been described in both disorders. We believe that the pathophysiological processes that were explored in this article would be able to expand the mechanisms of the association. The in-depth knowledge is needed to be converted to therapeutic and preventive strategies to improve the quality of care of children suffering from FAPDs and asthma.
