A review on human health perspective of air pollution with respect to allergies and asthma

Fluorescence distinguishing of SO2 derivatives and Cys/GSH from multi-channel signal patterns and visual sensing based on smartphone in living cells and environment

Sulfur dioxide (SO₂), cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH), which perform crucial actions in regulating the balance of human, are closely related reactive sulfur species (RSS). Moreover, SO₂ is one of the most concerned air pollutants, which is easily soluble in water and forms its derivatives. Therefore, it is highly desirable to differentiate SO₂ derivatives and Cys/GSH in living cells and environment. Herein, a new near-infrared (NIR) mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe, NIR-CG, which could distinguish SO₂ derivatives and Cys/GSH by using multiple sets of signal patterns under single excitation was reported. NIR-CG exhibited different fluorescence signal modes to SO₃^2- and Cys/GSH with low limit of detection (17.1 nM for SO₃^2-, 17.3 nM for Cys and 25.9 nM for GSH). The recognition mechanisms of NIR-CG to SO₃^2- and Cys/GSH were verified by HRMS, ¹H NMR and DFT calculation. NIR-CG had good ability of mitochondrial targeted and fluorescence imaging in cells. What's more, NIR-CG showed great recovery rates (101-104%) in the determination of SO₃^2- in actual water samples. It was worth noting that NIR-CG-based paper strip successfully realized the visual quantitative detection of SO₃^2- and Cys/GSH by use of smartphone, which offered a novel method to develop powerful sensing platform.

Characterization of Burning Behaviors and Particulate Matter Emissions of Crop Straws Based on a Cone Calorimeter

Crop residue burning is one of the major sources of particulate matter (PM) in the air. The burning behaviors and PM emissions of the three typical crop residues (rice straw, wheat straw, corn straw) in China were characterized by a cone calorimeter (CONE) coupled with a laser dust meter. The water-soluble compounds, carbonaceous content, and morphology of PM were measured by ion chromatography, elemental analyzer, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The results showed that thermal stability of corn straw was the worst among the three crop straws. The heat release rate (HRR) curves of the three crop straws were the typical curves of thermally thick charring (residue forming) samples. Wheat straw had the highest smoke yield, which was 2.9 times that of rice straw. The PM emission factor of wheat straw was 180.91 µg/g, which was about three times that of rice straw. The contents of K+, Na+, and Cl- in PM were significantly higher than those of the other six water-soluble inorganic ions. The ratio of organic carbon and elemental carbon (OC/EC) ranged from 14.82 to 30.82, which was similar to the results of open burning. There were mainly three kinds of aggregates in the PM of crop straws: network, chain-like, and soot. Individual particles were mixtures of KCl and organic matters. Core-shell structures were found in PM of rice straw and corn straw. The results in this study were provided based on CONE, an ISO-standard apparatus, which could avoid data conflicts caused by the difference of combustion devices. The relationship between the burning behavior and PM emission characteristics of crop straws was established, which is helpful to understand emissions of crop straws and to find a novel way to solve the problems from the burning of crop residues.

Thermotolerant wheat cultivar (Triticum aestivum L. var. WR544) response to ozone, EDU, and particulate matter interactive exposure

The present study was conducted to assess the response of thermotolerant wheat cultivar (Triticum aestivum L. var. WR544) to individual and combination of ambient ground level ozone (AO₃) and particulate matter (PM) air pollutants with ethylene diurea (EDU) used as an ozone stress mitigator. The four treatment combinations to which wheat cultivars were exposed are T1 (AO₃ + PM), T2 (EDU + PM), T3 (AO₃-PM), and T4 (EDU-PM). The effect of different treatments on morphological (foliar ozone injury, leaf area, shoot height, number of leaves, and total biomass), biochemical (leaf extract pH, electrical conductivity, relative water content, total chlorophyll, ascorbic acid content), nutritional (leaf carbohydrate content and leaf protein content), and yield (biological yield, economic yield, and harvest index) attributes of the cultivar were monitored. The plants under T1 experienced 20-30% foliar ozone injury and recorded lowest economic yield (0.58 g/plant). Plants under T2 and T3 showed visible foliar ozone injury range between 0 and 5% whereas plants under T4 exhibited negligible ozone injuries. EDU-treated plants without PM deposition (T4) exhibited better morphology, leaf protein content, leaf carbohydrate content, biological and economic yield as compared to T1-, T2-, and T3-treated plants but EDU was only partially effective. Despite being a thermotolerant variety, WR544 gets adversely affected by the individual and combined exposure of AO₃ and PM air pollutants. These result findings highlighted the need for more detailed study of air quality impact on the thermotolerant cultivars of other key crops to individual and combined air pollutants.

Association of airborne particulate matter with pollen, fungal spores, and allergic symptoms in an arid urbanized area

Studies focused on the seasonal distribution of pollen and spores in semiarid cities are scarce. At these sites, climate change potentiates the emission and transport of fine (PM₁₀) to ultrafine particles (PM_2.5), easily attached to pollen surfaces, causing allergen's release. This study examines the potential correlation of seasonal variations of pollen, fungal spores, PM₁₀, and meteorological parameters with allergic reactions of 150 people living in a Sonoran desert city. We collected PM₁₀, airborne pollen, and spores during a year. We also studied topsoil and road dust samples as potential PM-emission sources. We obtained dust-mineralogy, chemistry, and particle size attached to pollen by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Results show that seasonal high PM-loading in the urban atmosphere coincides with aeroallergens promoting micro- to nanoparticles' attachment to pollen's surface. A collapsed membrane was observed in several samples after individual grains show the following maximum wall coverage: Poaceae 28%, Asteraceae 40%, Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthacea 29%, Fabaceae 18%. Most of the particles covering pollen's surface have a geogenic origin mixed with metals linked to traffic (bromide, chlorine, and antimony). Mineralogical, granulometric analysis, and main wind-direction show that two local soil-types are the main contributors to PM. A high frequency of positive sensitization to pollen with high particle loading was detected. These results suggest that climate-driven dust emissions may alter pollen and spore surfaces' physicochemical characteristics with the further consequences in their allergenic potential.

Chronic exposure to air pollution and risk of mental health disorders complicating pregnancy

BACKGROUND

Air pollution is associated with mental health in the general population, but its influence on maternal mental health during pregnancy has not been assessed.

OBJECTIVE

We evaluated the relationship between unspecified mental disorders complicating pregnancy and depression with average air pollution exposure during 3-months preconception, first trimester and whole pregnancy.

METHODS

Ambient air pollution was derived from a modified Community Multiscale Air Quality model and mental health diagnoses were based on electronic intrapartum medical records. Logistic regression models assessed the odds of unspecified mental disorder complicating pregnancy (n = 11,577) and depression (n = 9793) associated with an interquartile range increase in particulate matter (PM) less than 2.5 μm (PM_2.5), PM₁₀, carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), nitrogen oxide (NO_x), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ozone (O₃). Pregnancies without mental health disorders were the reference group (n = 211,645). Models were adjusted for maternal characteristics and study site; analyses were repeated using cases with no additional mental health co-morbidity.

RESULTS

Whole pregnancy exposure to PM₁₀, PM_2.5, NO₂, and NO_x was associated with a 29%-74% increased odds of unspecified mental disorders complicating pregnancy while CO was associated with 31% decreased odds. Results were similar for depression: whole pregnancy exposure to PM₁₀, PM_2.5, NO₂, and NO_x was associated with 11%-21% increased odds and CO and O₃ were associated with 16%-20% decreased odds. SO₂ results were inconsistent, with increased odds for unspecified mental disorders complicating pregnancy and decreased odds for depression. While most findings were similar or stronger among cases with no co-morbidity, PM_2.5 and NO_x were associated with reduced risk and SO₂ with increased risk for depression only.

DISCUSSION

Whole pregnancy exposure to PM₁₀, PM_2.5, NO₂, and NO_x were associated with unspecified mental disorder complicating pregnancy and depression, but some results varied for depression only. These risks merit further investigation.

The association between ozone and fine particles and mental health-related emergency department visits in California, 2005-2013

Recent studies suggest that air pollutant exposure may increase the incidence of mental health conditions, however research is limited. We examined the association between ozone (O3) and fine particles (PM2.5) and emergency department (ED) visits related to mental health outcomes, including psychosis, neurosis, neurotic/stress, substance use, mood/affective, depression, bipolar, schizotypal/delusional, schizophrenia, self-harm/suicide, and homicide/inflicted injury, from 2005 through 2013 in California. Air monitoring data were provided by the U.S. EPA's Air Quality System Data Mart and ED data were provided by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. We used the time-series method with a quasi-Poisson regression, controlling for apparent temperature, day of the week, holidays, and seasonal/long-term trends. Per 10 parts per billion increase, we observed significant cumulative 7-day associations between O3 and all mental health [0.64%, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.21, 1.07], depression [1.87%, 95% CI: 0.62, 3.15], self-harm/suicide [1.43%, 95% CI: 0.35, 2.51], and bipolar [2.83%, 95% CI: 1.53, 4.15]. We observed 30-day lag associations between O3 and neurotic disorder [1.22%, 95% CI: 0.48, 1.97] and homicide/inflicted injury [2.01%, 95% CI: 1.00, 3.02]. Same-day mean PM2.5 was associated with a 0.42% [95% CI: 0.14, 0.70] increase in all mental health, 1.15% [95% CI: 0.62, 1.69] increase in homicide/inflicted injury, and a 0.57% [95% CI: 0.22, 0.92] increase in neurotic disorders per 10 μg/m3 increase. Other outcomes not listed here were not statistically significant for O3 or PM2.5. Risk varied by age group and was generally greater for females, Asians, and Hispanics. We also observed seasonal variation for outcomes including but not limited to depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, self-harm/suicide, and homicide/inflicted injury. Ambient O3 or PM2.5 may increase the risk of mental health illness, though underlying biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Findings warrant further investigation to better understand the impacts of air pollutant exposure among vulnerable groups.

Effect of particulate matter exposure on the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in children: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Among various air pollutants, particulate matter (PM) is the most harmful and representative pollutant. At the same time, allergic rhinitis (AR) is getting more and more attention, so we explore the relationship between PM and the prevalence of AR among children. Then, PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar was used to search for relevant studies up to January 2020. Literature quality assessment was processed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) evaluation scale. Adjusted odds ratio (OR) with corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) was retrieved from individual studies and pooled to generate a summary effect via STATA software. Besides, we test the result stability by Egger's test and funnel plot, and using the trim-and-fill method to modify the possible asymmetric funnel graph. 21 studies were included in the meta-analysis. 9 articles reported about PM_2.5 on childhood AR (1.09, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.17, per 10 μg/m³ increase). 15 articles reported about PM₁₀ on childhood AR (1.06, 95%CI: 1.02,1.11, per 10 μg/m³ increase), PM_2.5 exposure has a bigger effect on children AR than PM₁₀. In addition, a series of subgroup analysis was performed, and we found that PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ have different performances in different subgroups. In addition to this, we analyzed the sources of heterogeneity of the study. Apart from the results we got all have good stability without publication bias. Therefore, it can be concluded that exposure to PM may increase the prevalence of AR among children.

Exposure to Atmospheric Particulate Matter-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Their Health Effects: A Review

Particulate matter (PM) is a major factor contributing to air quality deterioration that enters the atmosphere as a consequence of various natural and anthropogenic activities. In PM, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent a class of organic chemicals with at least two aromatic rings that are mainly directly emitted via the incomplete combustion of various organic materials. Numerous toxicological and epidemiological studies have proven adverse links between exposure to particulate matter-bound (PM-bound) PAHs and human health due to their carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Among human exposure routes, inhalation is the main pathway regarding PM-bound PAHs in the atmosphere. Moreover, the concentrations of PM-bound PAHs differ among people, microenvironments and areas. Hence, understanding the behaviour of PM-bound PAHs in the atmosphere is crucial. However, because current techniques hardly monitor PAHs in real-time, timely feedback on PAHs including the characteristics of their concentration and composition, is not obtained via real-time analysis methods. Therefore, in this review, we summarize personal exposure, and indoor and outdoor PM-bound PAH concentrations for different participants, spaces, and cities worldwide in recent years. The main aims are to clarify the characteristics of PM-bound PAHs under different exposure conditions, in addition to the health effects and assessment methods of PAHs.

Analysis of Spatio-Temporal Variation Characteristics of Main Air Pollutants in Shijiazhuang City

Air pollution has become one of the important concerns of environmental pollution in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region. As an important city in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei, Shijiazhuang has long been ranked in the bottom ten in terms of air quality in the country. In order to effectively grasp the influencing factors and current distribution of air pollution in Shijiazhuang City, this paper collects data on the top air pollutants in Shijiazhuang from 2017 to 2019, analyzes the characteristics of time changes in the region, and uses the Kriging interpolation method to affect the air pollutants in this area. The spatial distribution characteristics are studied. The results show (1) From 2017 to 2019, the environmental quality of Shijiazhuang City showed a decreasing trend except for O3. (2) Seasonal changes show that NO2, PM2.5, and CO show as winter > autumn > spring > summer, PM10, SO2 show as winter > spring > autumn > summer, and O3 concentration changes as summer > spring > autumn > winter. (3) The daily change trends of NO2, SO2, PM10 and PM2.5 are similar, while the change trends of O3 and NO2 are opposite. (4) The correlations between air quality index (AQI) and concentrations suggest that PM10, PM2.5, and CO contribute the most to undesirable pollution levels in this area, while NO2, SO2, and O3 contribute less to undesirable pollution. We have concluded that the particulate pollution in Shijiazhuang City has been effectively controlled, thanks to the relevant measures introduced by the government, but the O3-based compound pollution is gradually increasing, so particulate pollution and O3 pollution need to be treated together. The research results of this article have important practical significance for urban or regional air environment monitoring and prevention.

BC and 1,4NQ-BC up-regulate the cytokines and enhance IL-33 expression in LPS pretreatment of human bronchial epithelial cells☆

Black carbon (BC) reacts with different substances to form secondary pollutants called aged black carbon, which causes inflammation and lung damage. BC and aged BC may enhance IL-33 in vivo, which may be derived from macrophages. The pro-inflammatory effect of IL-33 makes it essential to determine the source of IL-33, so it guides us to explore how to alleviate lung injury. In this study, a human bronchial epithelial cell line of 16HBE cells was selected, and aged BC (1,4-NQ coated BC and ozone oxidized BC) was used. We found that both BC and aged BC were able to up-regulate the mRNA expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 except IL-33. However, the Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Protein kinase B (AKTs) pathways remained inactive. After pretreatment with Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), IL-33 mRNA expression was significantly increased in 16HBE cells and MAPKs and PI3K/AKT were activated. These results suggested that MAPKs and PI3K/AKT pathways were involved in the elevation of IL-33. Furthermore, epithelial cells are unlikely to be the source of lung inflammation caused by elevated IL-33 in BC and aged BC.

Trace gas emissions from municipal solid waste landfills: A review

Trace gas emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills have received increasing attention in recent years. This paper reviews literature published between 1983 and 2019, focusing on (i) the origin and fate of trace gas in MSW landfills, (ii) sampling and analytical techniques, (iii) quantitative emission measurement techniques, (iv) concentration and surface emission rates of common trace compounds at different landfill units and (v) the environmental and health concerns associated with trace gas emissions from MSW landfills. Trace gases can be produced from waste degradation, direct volatilisation of chemicals in waste products or from conversions/reactions between other compounds. Different chemical groups dominate the different waste decomposition stages. In general, organic sulphur compounds and oxygenated compounds are connected with fresh waste, while abundant hydrogen sulphide, aromatics and aliphatic hydrocarbons are usually found during the methane fermentation stage. Selection of different sampling, analytical and emission rate measurement techniques might generate different results when quantifying trace gas emission from landfills, and validation tests are needed to evaluate the reliability of current methods. The concentrations of trace gases and their surface emission rates vary largely from site to site, and fresh waste dumping areas and uncovered waste surfaces are the most important fugitive emission sources. The adverse effects of trace gas emission are not fully understood, and more emission data are required in future studies to assess quantitatively their environmental impacts as well as health risks.

Spatiotemporal characteristics of asthma emergency department presentations in diverse geographical and climatic regions, Queensland, Australia

OBJECTIVE

Sudden acute episodes of asthma exacerbation are often treated by hospital EDs. It is hypothesised that determinants of acute asthma would differ across geographic regions. The objective of the present study was to detail seasonality, trends and spatiotemporal patterns of asthma ED presentations across Queensland (QLD), Australia, a state covering 1.8 million square kilometres, spanning multiple climates.

METHODS

Six years of routinely collected data (2012 to 2017) from 28 major QLD public hospitals were extracted from Queensland Health's Emergency Data Collection. The dataset contained individual, episode-level asthma-like diagnoses of ED presentations. Seasonality and trends of acute asthma were assessed through multiplicative time-series analysis.

RESULTS

The study consisted of 2192 days with a total of 65 012 asthma ED presentations in QLD. The 6-year average daily incidence rate was 270 asthma ED presentations per 100 000 population. The highest morbidity of asthma ED presentations occurred during the southern hemisphere winter months. Children showed a higher incidence rate compared to adults with males experiencing a higher incidence compared to females up until the age of 13, after which an inversion was observed persisting through adulthood. Seasonality of asthma ED presentations differed with latitude across QLD.

CONCLUSION

Asthma-related ED presentations exhibit spatiotemporal variation across QLD, which appears to be related to climate. Furthermore, aeroallergens and respiratory viruses may be responsible for asthma ED peaks outside the winter period. Socioeconomic status may influence asthma ED presentation rates between regions. This knowledge can guide ongoing management and assist public health policy response.

Pollution Characteristics, Transport Pathways, and Potential Source Regions of PM2.5 and PM10 in Changchun City in 2018

Air pollution has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Cluster analysis, scene analysis, and the potential source contribution function (PSCF), based on the backward trajectory model, were used to identify the transport pathways and potential source regions of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of not more than 2.5 µm and 10 µm) in Changchun in 2018. In addition, the PSCF was slightly improved. The highest average monthly concentrations of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ appeared in March and April, when they reached 53.9μg/m³ and 120.0 μg/m³, respectively. The main potential source regions of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ were generally similar: western Jilin Province, northwestern Inner Mongolia, northeastern Liaoning Province, and the Yellow Sea region. The secondary potential source regions were southern Russia, central Mongolia, western Shandong Province, eastern Hebei Province, and eastern Jiangsu Province. The northwest and southwest directions were found to be the two pathways that mainly affect the air quality of Changchun City. Moreover, the northwestern pathway had a larger potential contribution source area than the southwestern pathway. The airflow in the southwest direction came from Liaoning Province, Shandong Province, and the Yellow Sea region. This mainly occurred in summer; its transmission distance was short; it had a relatively higher weight potential source contribution function (WPSCF) value; it can be regarded as a local source; and its representative pollutants were SO₂ (sulfur dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide), and O₃ (ozone). The northwestern pathway passed through Russia, Mongolia, and Inner Mongolia. The transmission distance of this pathway was longer; it had a relatively lower WPSCF value; it can be considered as a natural source to a certain extent; it mainly occurred in autumn and, especially, in winter; and the representative pollutants of this pathway were NO (nitric oxide), NOx (nitrogen oxide), PM_2.5, and PM₁₀.

Prenatal and postnatal exposures to ambient air pollutants associated with allergies and airway diseases in childhood: A retrospective observational study

It's inconsistent about associations of early exposures to outdoor air pollutants with allergies and airway diseases in childhood. Here, we investigated associations of prenatal and postnatal exposures to outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), and PM₁₀ (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm) with asthma, wheeze, hay fever, rhinitis, pneumonia, and eczema in childhood. We surveyed 3,177 preschoolers who never change residences since birth in Shanghai, China. Parents reported information regarding children's health status. Daily-averaged concentrations of these pollutants in the children's gestation and in the first year of lifetime for district where children lived were collected by Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center. After adjusting for covariates, exposures to higher level of NO₂ during different trimesters of gestation and of the first year of lifetime had significant associations with the increased odds of asthma, hay fever, rhinitis, pneumonia, and eczema in childhood. Associations of NO₂ exposures in the early trimesters of gestation and of the first year of lifetime with pneumonia were stronger than in the later trimesters, whereas associations of NO₂ exposures in the early trimesters with hay fever and eczema were weaker than in the later trimesters. Our results indicated that prenatal and postnatal exposures to outdoor NO₂ could be risk factors for allergies and airway diseases in childhood. Both dose and duration were related with the influence degree of early NO₂ exposure on childhood allergies and airway diseases.

Impact of Air Pollution on Asthma Outcomes

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by variable airflow obstruction, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and airway inflammation. Evidence suggests that air pollution has a negative impact on asthma outcomes in both adult and pediatric populations. The aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge on the effect of various outdoor and indoor pollutants on asthma outcomes, their burden on its management, as well as to highlight the measures that could result in improved asthma outcomes. Traffic-related air pollution, nitrogen dioxide and second-hand smoking (SHS) exposures represent significant risk factors for asthma development in children. Nevertheless, a causal relation between air pollution and development of adult asthma is not clearly established. Exposure to outdoor pollutants can induce asthma symptoms, exacerbations and decreases in lung function. Active tobacco smoking is associated with poorer asthma control, while exposure to SHS increases the risk of asthma exacerbations, respiratory symptoms and healthcare utilization. Other indoor pollutants such as heating sources and molds can also negatively impact the course of asthma. Global measures, that aim to reduce exposure to air pollutants, are highly needed in order to improve the outcomes and management of adult and pediatric asthma in addition to the existing guidelines.

Smart stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems based on cyclodextrin: A review

Stimulated by researches in materials chemistry and medicine fields, drug delivery has entered a new stage of development. Drug delivery systems have been extensively studied according to the differences in the drug therapeutic environment such as pH, light, temperature, magnet, redox, enzymes, etc. Cyclodextrin is a smart tool that has been proven to be used in the preparation of drug delivery, and has become a new area of concern in recent years. In this review, we discuss recent research advances in smart stimuli-responsive cyclodextrin-based drug delivery. First, different stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems based on cyclodextrin are introduced and classified. Then, the characteristics of different types of stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems are described, and their applications are emphasized. Finally, current challenges and future development opportunities of smart stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems based on cyclodextrin are discussed.

Impact of air pollution on symptom severity during the birch, grass and ragweed pollen period in Vienna, Austria: Importance of O3 in 2010-2018

Air pollution is a threat to the general population, especially to pollen allergy sufferers in urban environments. Different air quality parameters have hitherto been examined which add to the burden of pollen allergy sufferers. Parameters such as NO₂, SO₂, PM₁₀, PM_2.5, and O₃ are supposed to have additional impact, not only on health in general (increase in asthma, allergy sensitization frequency), but also on pollen grains (increase of allergenicity). However, it remains unknown if those air quality parameters increase symptom severity during the pollen season. We selected the birch, grass, and ragweed pollen seasons as different time periods throughout the year and analyzed the relationship of symptom data to pollen, air quality, and meteorological data (temperature, relative humidity) for the metropolis of Vienna (Austria). A linear regression model was computed based on different symptom data, and both pollen and air quality data were tested simultaneously. Ozone was positively and significantly associated with symptom scores in all three seasons, whereas this was only rarely the case with other pollutants. Therefore, only ozone was selected for further analysis in a model including meteorological parameters. In this model, effect estimates of ozone were attenuated but remained significant for the grass pollen season. The lack of significance in the other seasons may be attributed to the less numerous symptom data entries and the shorter duration of the pollen seasons for birch and ragweed. All other air quality parameters usually showed lower concentrations during the pollen seasons and displayed little variation. This might explain the lack of a clear signal. Our results suggest that today's allergic population is already affected by air quality (rising O₃ levels). Air quality should be considered as well in pollen information and pollen allergy studies in general because of its increasing importance in the light of global warming.

Associations of ambient air pollutants with airway and allergic symptoms in 13,335 preschoolers in Shanghai, China

Findings are inconsistent in studies for impacts of outdoor air pollutants on airway health in childhood. In this paper, we collected data regarding airway and allergic symptoms in the past year before a survey in 13,335 preschoolers from a cross-sectional study. Daily averaged concentrations of ambient sulphur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM₁₀) in the past year before the survey were collected in the kindergarten-located district. We investigated associations of 12-month average concentrations of these pollutants with childhood airway and allergic symptoms. In the two-level (district-child) logistic regression analyses, exposure to higher level of NO₂ and of PM₁₀ increased odds of wheeze symptoms (adjusted OR, 95%CI: 1.03, 1.01-1.05 for per 3.0 μg/m³ increase in NO₂; 1.22, 1.09-1.39 for per 7.6 μg/m³ increase in PM₁₀), wheeze with a cold (1.03, 1.01-1.06; 1.22, 1.08-1.39), dry cough during night (1.05, 1.03-1.08; 1.23, 1.09-1.40), rhinitis symptoms (1.11, 1.08-1.13; 1.32, 1.07-1.63), rhinitis on pet (1.11, 1.05-1.18; 1.37, 0.95-1.98) and pollen (1.12, 1.03-1.21; 1.23, 0.84-1.82) exposure, eczema symptoms (1.09, 1.05-1.12; 1.22, 0.98-1.52), and lack of sleep due to eczema (1.12, 1.07-1.18; 1.58, 1.25-1.98). Exposures to NO₂ and PM₁₀ were also significantly and positively associated with the accumulative score of airway symptoms. Similar positive associations were found of NO₂ and of PM₁₀ with the individual symptoms and symptom scores among preschoolers from different kindergarten-located district. These results indicate that ambient NO₂ and PM₁₀ likely are risk factors for airway and allergic symptoms in childhood in Shanghai, China.

Analysis of Pollution Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Main Pollutants in the Atmosphere of Shenyang City

Air pollution is one of the most concerning environmental problems in cities. Hourly data on pollutant concentrations from 11 automatic atmospheric monitoring stations and meteorological data in Shenyang from 2017 to 2019 were used to analyze the spatio-temporal variation rules of CO (carbon monoxide), SO2 (sulfur dioxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide), O3 (ozone), PM2.5 and PM10 (PM particles with an aerodynamic diameters of not more than 2.5 µm and 10 µm) and their relationships with meteorological parameters. Meanwhile, the regional transmission route of pollutants was analyzed by the hybrid single particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. The results showed that the concentration of O3 in the northern area of the city was higher than that in the south; CO, SO2 and NO2 were relatively high in the urban center; and PM2.5 and PM10 were relatively high in the southwest. The average concentration of pollutants was lowest in 2019. The concentration of O3 was the highest in spring, while CO showed no significant variations between different seasons. The remaining pollutant concentrations appeared to be high in winter and low in summer. The cumulative concentrations of the six pollutants were the highest in March, and relatively low in July–September. The diurnal concentration variations of O3, CO and SO2 exhibited a “single peak,” while others showed a “double peak and double valley.” Temperature was positively correlated with O3 concentration and negatively correlated with others. Wind speed was negatively correlated with the concentration of PM2.5, NO2, and O3. The air quality of the main urban area in spring and summer was mainly affected by the coastal air flow, while it was mostly affected by the northwest air flow in autumn and winter.

Ambient Gaseous Pollutants in an Urban Area in South Africa: Levels and Potential Human Health Risk

Urban air pollution from gaseous pollutants is a growing public health problem in many countries including South Africa. Examining the levels, trends and health risk of exposure to ambient gaseous pollutants will assist in understanding the effectiveness of existing control measures and plan for suitable management strategies. This study determined the concentration levels and non-cancer risk of CO, SO2, NO2, and O3 at an industrial area in Pretoria West, South Africa. We utilised a set of secondary data for CO, NO2, SO2, and O3 that was obtained from a monitoring station. Analysis of the hourly monitored data was done. Their non-cancer risk (HQ) was determined using the human health risk assessment model for different age categories. The annual levels of NO2 (39.442 µg/m3), SO2 (22.464 µg/m3), CO (722.003 µg/m3) and the 8-hour concentration of CO (649.902 µg/m3) and O3 (33.556 µg/m3) did not exceed the South African National Ambient Air Quality Standards for each pollutant. The HQ for each pollutant across exposed groups (except children) was less than 1. This indicates that the recorded levels could not pose non-cancer risk to susceptible individuals.

Ambient air pollution and its influence on human health and welfare: an overview

Human health is closely related to his environment. The influence of exposure to air pollutants on human health and well-being has been an interesting subject and gained much volume of research over the last 50 years. In general, polluted air is considered one of the major factors leading to many diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease and lung cancer for the people. Besides, air pollution adversely affects the animals and deteriorates the plant environment. The overarching objective of this review is to explore the previous researches regarding the causes and sources of air pollution, how to control it and its detrimental effects on human health. The definition of air pollution and its sources were introduced extensively. Major air pollutants and their noxious effects were detailed. Detrimental impacts of air pollution on human health and well-being were also presented.

The impact of exposure to desert dust on infants' symptoms and countermeasures to reduce the effects

BACKGROUND

The association between particulate matter (PM), including desert dust, and allergic symptoms has not been well studied. We examined whether PM exacerbated nose/eye/respiratory symptoms in infants, with a focus on the desert dust element, and assessed possible countermeasures.

METHODS

We conducted a panel study of 1492 infants from October 2014 to July 2016 in 3 regions in Japan as an adjunct study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Infants' daily symptom scores and behaviors were acquired by web-based questionnaires sent to mothers, who answered within a day using mobile phones. Odds ratios (OR) for symptom development per increased fine PM or desert dust exposure were estimated. Regular use of medications and behaviors on the day of exposure were investigated as possible effect modifiers.

RESULTS

Infants developed nose/eye/respiratory symptoms significantly more often in accordance with fine particulate levels (adjusted OR per 10 µg/m³ increase: 1.04, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.07). A model including both fine particulates and desert dust showed reduced OR for fine particulates and robust OR for desert dust (adjusted OR per 0.1/km increase: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.09-1.23). An increased OR was observed both in infants who had previously wheezed and in those who had never wheezed. Receiving information on the particulate forecast, reducing time outdoors, closing windows, and regular use of leukotriene receptor antagonists were significant effect modifiers.

CONCLUSIONS

Transborder desert dust arrival increased the risk of nose/eye/respiratory symptoms development in infants. Regular use of leukotriene receptor antagonists and other countermeasures reduced the risk.

Fully Integrated Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide NO2 Gas Detector

We report an amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO)-based toxic gas detection system. The microsystem contains an IGZO thin-film transistor (TFT) as a sensing element and exhibits remarkable selectivity and sensitivity to low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). In contrast to existing metal oxide-based gas sensors, which are active either at high temperature or with light activation, the developed IGZO TFT sensor is operable at room temperature and requires only visible light activation to revive the sensor after exposure to NO₂. Furthermore, we demonstrate air-stable sensors with an experimental limit of detection of 100 ppb. This is the first report on metal oxide TFT gas sensors without heating or continuous light activation. Unlike most existing gas sensing systems that take care of identifying the analytes alone, the developed IGZO microsystem not only quantifies NO₂ gas concentration but also yields a 5-bit digital output. The compact microsystem, incorporating readout and analog-to-digital conversion modules developed using only two TFTs, paves the way for inexpensive toxic gas monitoring systems.

Research on the Microbiological Quality of Air in Naval Facilities

Harmful biological factors accumulated in the ambient atmosphere are a very important and increasingly recognised problem of both occupational medicine and public health. The quantitative and qualitative assessment of harmful biological agents in the working environment is a very important element of the exposure assessment and therefore of an assessment of workers’ health risks. In 2018, a pilot study on the microbiological quality of air was carried out at two facilities of the Polish Navy.

Temporal variations of six ambient criteria air pollutants from 2015 to 2018, their spatial distributions, health risks and relationships with socioeconomic factors during 2018 in China

Air pollution events occurred frequently in China, and tremendous efforts were devoted to the reduction of air pollution in recent years. Here, analysis of ambient monitoring data of six criteria air pollutants from 367 Chinese cities during 2015-2018, showed that PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂ and CO were reduced significantly by 22.1%, 13.5%, 46.4% and 21.5%, respectively, NO₂ reduction was less significant (6.3%) while O₃ level instead increased over China (13.7%). Spatial distribution, seasonal, monthly and diurnal variations of the air pollutants during 2018, implicated of effective control measures, were discussed in details, especially for the five key densely populated regions of Jing-Jin-Ji (JJJ), Fen Wei Plains (FWP), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Sichuan Basin (SCB) and Pearl River Delta (PRD). Moreover, excess health risks (ERs) of the six pollutants were estimated for 2018, and such risks was two times higher if the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guideline rather than Chinese guideline was adopted. PM₁₀ rather than PM_2.5 was the dominant contributor to ERs, and the case with both PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ exceeding threshold values occupied ~1/3 of total days, yet contributed ~2/3 of total ERs. For 2018, the health-risk based air quality index (HAQI) was further calculated by combining health risks from multiple pollutants, and it was found that high HAQI mostly distributed in North China Plain (NCP). ~15%, ~85% and ~95% people in YRD, FWP and JJJ were exposed to polluted air (HAQI > 100), and population-normalized HAQI further added the inequality, JJJ and a small region of SCB had much higher HAQI (>280). Investigations on HAQI with socioeconomic factors show that total population, population density and built-up area presented an inverted U-shape, suggesting existence of Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), while a positive relationship was found between HAQI and share of secondary industry. Multiple regression analysis suggested that built-up area was the most prominent factor to HAQI, followed by the gross domestic product (GDP). The findings here demonstrate in great details the current characteristics of air pollution and its associated health risks in China, therefore providing important implications for effective air pollution control strategies in near future for different regions of China.

The Role of Home Environments in Allergic Disease

Allergic diseases are surprisingly common, chronic health conditions. The primary location where the vast majority of people are exposed to allergens and other substances is in their home. This means it is important to understand home environments and how a home's systems function and interact-and that how we occupy these spaces plays a crucial role in both environmental exposure and management of allergic disease. This review provides an overview of what is understood about home environmental exposure and its impact on our health, and proposes a systematic process for using a patient's environmental history to develop individualized, manageable and cost-effective recommendations. Once occupant-related information has been gathered, a home environmental exposure assessment should be performed focused on identifying the relationships between any identified sources of contaminants and the housing systems, and conditions that may be contributing to exposure. The results and recommendations from this assessment can then be used to guide exposure-reduction efforts by patients and/or their caregivers in an effort to improve disease management. In this review, we'll discuss three different types of home interventions-active, which must be routinely performed by the patient and/or caregiver, passive, which are interventions that work without routine, direct interaction from the homeowner, and behavioral changes in how the home environment is cleaned and maintained for long-term reduction of allergens. In this review, and others evaluated for this discussion, a significant number of home environmental assessment and intervention programs were shown to be cost effective, with the majority of programs showing a net positive return on investment. It is important to recognize that to be cost effective, the level and intensity of services offered through home visit programs need be stratified, based on the estimated health risks of the patient, in order to tailor the assessment and target the interventions to a patient's needs while maximizing cost effectiveness.

The synergistic or adjuvant effect of DINP combined with OVA as a possible mechanism to promote an immune response

Diisononyl phthalate (DINP) is commonly used as a plasticizer in industrial and consumer product applications. Several studies have suggested a possible link between exposure to DINP and the development of allergic asthma, and the synergistic effect of DINP combined with Ovalbumin (OVA) is a possible way to promote an immune response. These findings are still speculative, since there is insufficient evidence to assess the ability of DINP to influence "allergic asthma pathology". This study was designed to determine any effects of OVA/DINP exposure on airway reactivity, particularly when combined with allergen exposure. Experiments to determine these effects were conducted after 15 days of combined exposure and a subsequent challenge with aerosolized ovalbumin for one week. Airway hyper-responsiveness (lung function), lung tissue pathology, cytokines and oxidative stress biomarkers were investigated. We showed that oral exposure to OVA/DINP could induce airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), and aggravate airway wall remodeling, and that this deterioration was concomitant with increased immunoglobulin-E and Th2 cytokines secretion. The data also demonstrated that DINP could promote oxidative damage in the lung. In summary, this study showed that DINP has an adjuvant effect on allergic asthma affecting lung function, lung histopathology, immune molecules and causes oxidative damage.

The association between PM2.5 exposure and suicidal ideation: a prefectural panel study

Background

Suicidal ideation is subject to serious underestimation among existing public health studies. While numerous factors have been recognized in affecting suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB), the associated environmental risks have been poorly understood. Foremost among the various environment risks were air pollution, in particular, the PM2.5. The present study attempted to examine the relationship between PM_2.5 level and local weekly index of suicidal ideation (ISI).

Methods

Using Internet search query volumes in Baidu (2017), the largest internet search engine in China, we constructed a prefectural panel data (278 prefectures, 52 weeks) and employed dynamic panel GMM system estimation to analyze the relationship between weekly concentration of PM2.5 (Mean = 87 μg·m^− 3) and the index of suicidal ideation (Mean = 49.9).

Results

The results indicate that in the spring and winter, a 10 μg·m^− 3 increase in the prior week’s PM_2.5 in a Chinese city is significantly associated with 0.020 increase in ISI in spring and a 0.007 increase in ISI in winter, after taking account other co-pollutants and meteorological conditions.

Conclusion

We innovatively proposed the measure of suicidal ideation and provided suggestive evidence of a positive association between suicidal ideation and PM_2.5 level.

Relative impact of meteorological factors and air pollutants on childhood allergic diseases in Shanghai, China

BACKGROUND

Non-optimal weather conditions and air pollution pose a significant threat to children's health. However, the relative impact of different environmental exposures on childhood allergic diseases remains unclear.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to quantify the relative impact of meteorological factors and air pollutants on childhood allergic diseases in Shanghai, China.

METHODS

Data on clinical visits due to childhood asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR) and atopic dermatitis (AD) from 2007 to 2017 in Shanghai were collected from Shanghai Children's Medical Center and Xinhua Hospital. The meteorological data (i.e. daily mean temperature, temperature difference, air pressure, air pressure difference, precipitation, relative humidity, sunshine and wind speed) for the same period were obtained from the Shanghai Meteorological Center. Air pollution data (PM₁₀, PM_2.5, NO₂, SO₂ and O₃) were provided by the Shanghai Environmental Protection Agency. Quasi-Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear models and Poisson regression combined with generalized linear models were used to assess the relative impact of meteorological factors and air pollutants on childhood allergic diseases.

RESULTS

There were a total of 2,410,392 cases of childhood allergic diseases, including 975,771 asthma, 646,975 AR and 787,646 AD. Most of environmental factors were significantly associated with childhood allergic diseases. Daily mean temperature (standard β: -0.076 (95% confidence interval (CI): -0.086, -0.067)) and air pressure (standard β: 0.075 (95% CI: 0.068, 0.082)) seemed to play more important roles than other environmental factors in the occurrence of these allergic diseases. The numbers of these allergic diseases attributable to an interquartile range (IQR) change in meteorological factors also appeared to be greater than those attributable to an IQR change in air pollutants.

CONCLUSIONS

Both climatic variation and air pollution were associated with childhood allergic diseases, but the former appeared to play a more important role in the occurrence of these diseases. These findings may have significant implications for the development of tailored strategies to prevent these rapidly-increasing diseases worldwide.

Pollutants and Their Interaction with Diseases of Social Hymenoptera

Many insect species, including social insects, are currently declining in abundance and diversity. Pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, or airborne fine particulate matter from agricultural and industrial sources are among the factors driving this decline. While these pollutants can have direct detrimental effects, they can also result in negative interactive effects when social insects are simultaneously exposed to multiple stressors. For example, sublethal effects of pollutants can increase the disease susceptibility of social insects, and thereby jeopardize their survival. Here we review how pesticides, heavy metals, or airborne fine particulate matter interact with social insect physiology and especially the insects’ immune system. We then give an overview of the current knowledge of the interactive effects of these pollutants with pathogens or parasites. While the effects of pesticide exposure on social insects and their interactions with pathogens have been relatively well studied, the effects of other pollutants, such as heavy metals in soil or fine particulate matter from combustion, vehicular transport, agriculture, and coal mining are still largely unknown. We therefore provide an overview of urgently needed knowledge in order to mitigate the decline of social insects.

The high-resolution estimation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration, health effect and monetary costs in Beijing

Severe air pollution episodes with high SO₂ loading have been frequently observed during the last decades in Beijing and have caused a noticeable damage to human health. To advance the spatiotemporal prediction of SO₂ exposure in Beijing, we developed the monthly land use regression (LUR) models using daily SO₂ concentration data collected from 34 monitoring stations during 2016 and 7 categories of potential independent variables (socio-economic factors, traffic and transport, emission source, land use, meteorological data, building morphology and Geographic location) in Beijing. The average adjusted R² of 12 final LUR models was 0.62, and the root-mean-squared error (RMSE) was 4.12 μg/m³. The LOOCV R² and RMSE of LUR models reached 0.56 and 5.43 μg/m³, respectively, suggesting that the LUR models achieved the satisfactory performance. The prediction results suggested that the average SO₂ level in Beijing was 11.06 μg/m³ with the highest one up to 22.49 μg/m³ but the lowest one down to 3.86 μg/m³. The SO₂ exposure showed strong spatial heterogeneity, which was much higher in the southern area than that in the northern in Beijing. The mortality and morbidity due to the excessive SO₂ concentration were estimated to be 73 (95% CI:(38-125)) and 27854 (95% CI:(13852-41659)) cases per year in Beijing, leading to economic cost of 35.76 (95% CI:(16.45-54.06)) and 441.47 (95% CI:(318.31-562.04)) million RMB Yuan in 2016, respectively. This study clarified the intra- and inter-regional transport modeling of the SO₂ pollution in Beijing and supplied an important support for the future air-quality and public health management strategies.

Seasonal exposure to PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and estimated lifetime risk of cancer: A pilot study

Limited researches are available on seasonal variation of inhalation exposure of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and its cancer risk assessment in China. We recruited 20 fresh postgraduates and measured outdoor and indoor (dormitories, offices and laboratories) daily PM_2.5 concentrations in four seasons (seven consecutive days in every season) during 2014 -2015, calculated daily potential doses of personal exposure to total Benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration (BaPeq) in the microenvironments based on the total BaPeq and the time-activity patterns, and estimated incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) using Monte Carlo method. Daily average concentrations of PM_2.5-bound ∑PAHs on the campus ranked from high to low were winter, autumn, spring, summer in the dormitories and offices. Daily average concentration of PM_2.5-bound ∑PAHs were higher in indoor environments than outdoor in the same season, except for that of PM_2.5-bound ∑PAHs in laboratories in the winter. Median values of ILCR in both sexes from high to low were winter (men vs. women: 5.35e^-9 vs. 4.96e^-9), spring (3.71e^-9 vs. 4.00e^-9), autumn (2.92e^-9 vs. 3.02e^-9), summer (1.71e^-9 vs. 1.87e^-9). Indoor and outdoor PM_2.5-bound PAHs concentrations showed seasonal and spatial variations. The ILCR value for PM_2.5-bound PAHs was higher in women than in men.

A novel reaction-responsive Ce⁴⁺/Tb³⁺ luminescent probe was designed and synthesized for sensing gaseous sulfur dioxide and its derivatives in human serum.

Forecasting Hazard Level of Air Pollutants Using LSTM’s

The South Asian countries have the most polluted cities in the world which has caused quite a concern in the recent years due to the detrimental effect it had on economy and on health of humans and crops. PM 2.5 in particular has been linked to cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, increased risk of lung cancer and acute respiratory infections. Higher concentration of surface ozone has been observed to have negatively impacted agricultural yield of crops. Due to its deleterious impact on human health and agriculture, air pollution cannot be brushed off as a trivial matter and measures must be taken to address the problem. Deterministic models have been actively used; but they fall short due to their complexity and inability to accurately model the problem. Deep learning models have however shown potential when it comes to modeling time series data. This article explores the use of recurrent neural networks as a framework for predicting the hazard levels in Lahore, Pakistan with 95.0% accuracy and Beijing, China with 98.95% using the time series data of air pollutants and meteorological parameters. Forecasting air quality index (AQI) and Hazard levels would help the government take appropriate steps to enact policies to reduce the pollutants and keep the citizens informed about the statistics.

Effect of air pollution on hospitalization for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, and myocardial infarction

This study aims to analyze the acute effects of PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂, and O₃ on hospitalizations for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), stroke, and myocardial infarction (MI) from 2014 to 2017 in Shenyang, China. Hospitalization records for AECOPD (17,655), stroke (276,736) and MI (26,235) and air pollutions concentration data (PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂, and O₃) were collected. A generalized additive model (GAM) was utilized to determine the impact of air pollutants on the relative risk (RR) of hospitalization for AECOPD, stroke, and MI. Stratified analysis for AECOPD was based on gender and age. It was based on gender, age, hypertension, and diabetes for stroke, and for MI it was based on gender, age, and coronary atherosclerosis. The lag effect for AECOPD in terms of gender analysis occurred at lag3-lag5. The hospitalization risk for stroke with hypertension due to SO₂ and NO₂ was greater than that of stroke without hypertension. The risk of hospitalization for stroke with hypertension as a comorbidity due to O₃ was lower than without hypertension. The risk of hospitalization for MI combined with coronary atherosclerosis due to PM_2.5, PM₁₀, or NO₂ was higher than that of hospitalizations for MI without coronary atherosclerosis. Air pollution increased the rate of hospitalization for AECOPD. SO₂ and O₃ appeared protective for stroke patients with coronary atherosclerosis. PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and NO₂ had no influence on total hospitalization for myocardial infarction.

Exposure to both formaldehyde and high relative humidity exacerbates allergic asthma by activating the TRPV4-p38 MAPK pathway in Balb/c mice

Some studies have indicated that formaldehyde, a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, can induce or aggravate allergic asthma. Epidemiological studies have also shown that the relative humidity indoors may be an independent and a key factor associated with the aggravation of allergic asthma. However, the synergy of humidity and formaldehyde on allergic asthma and the mechanism underlying this effect remain largely unknown. In this study, we aim to determine the effect of high relative humidity and/or formaldehyde exposure on allergic asthma and explore the underlying mechanisms. Male Balb/c mice were modeled with ovalbumin (OVA) and exposure to 0.5 mg/m³ formaldehyde and/or different relative humidity (60%/75%/90%). Histopathological changes, pulmonary function, Th1/Th2 balance, the status of mucus hypersecretion and the levels of inflammatory factors were detected to assess the exacerbation of allergic asthma. The levels of the transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4), calcium ion and the activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (p38 MAPK) were detected to explore the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that exposure to high relative humidity or to 0.5 mg/m³ formaldehyde alone had a slight, but not significant, affect on allergic asthma. However, the pathological response and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) were greatly aggravated by simultaneous exposure to 0.5 mg/m³ formaldehyde and 90% relative humidity. Blocking TRPV4or p38 MAPK using HC-067047 and SB203580 respectively, effectively alleviated the exacerbation of allergic asthma induced by this simultaneous exposure to formaldehyde and high relative humidity. The results show that when formaldehyde and high relative humidity are present this can enhance the activation of the TRPV4 ion channel in the lung leading to the aggravation of the p38 MAPK activation, resulting in the exacerbation of inflammation and hypersecretion of mucus in the airways.

Genomics of Particulate Matter Exposure Associated Cardiopulmonary Disease: A Narrative Review

Particulate matter (PM) exposure is associated with the development of cardiopulmonary disease. Our group has studied the adverse health effects of World Trade Center particulate matter (WTC-PM) exposure on firefighters. To fully understand the complex interplay between exposure, organism, and resultant disease phenotype, it is vital to analyze the underlying role of genomics in mediating this relationship. A PubMed search was performed focused on environmental exposure, genomics, and cardiopulmonary disease. We included original research published within 10 years, on epigenetic modifications and specific genetic or allelic variants. The initial search resulted in 95 studies. We excluded manuscripts that focused on work-related chemicals, heavy metals and tobacco smoke as primary sources of exposure, as well as reviews, prenatal research, and secondary research studies. Seven full-text articles met pre-determined inclusion criteria, and were reviewed. The effects of air pollution were evaluated in terms of methylation (n = 3), oxidative stress (n = 2), and genetic variants (n = 2). There is evidence to suggest that genomics plays a meditating role in the formation of adverse cardiopulmonary symptoms and diseases that surface after exposure events. Genomic modifications and variations affect the association between environmental exposure and cardiopulmonary disease, but additional research is needed to further define this relationship.

Eckol Inhibits Particulate Matter 2.5-Induced Skin Keratinocyte Damage via MAPK Signaling Pathway

Toxicity of particulate matter (PM) towards the epidermis has been well established in many epidemiological studies. It is manifested in cancer, aging, and skin damage. In this study, we aimed to show the mechanism underlying the protective effects of eckol, a phlorotannin isolated from brown seaweed, on human HaCaT keratinocytes against PM_2.5-induced cell damage. First, to elucidate the underlying mechanism of toxicity of PM_2.5, we checked the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, which contributed significantly to cell damage. Experimental data indicate that excessive ROS caused damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA and induced mitochondrial dysfunction. Furthermore, eckol (30 μM) decreased ROS generation, ensuring the stability of molecules, and maintaining a steady mitochondrial state. The western blot analysis showed that PM_2.5 promoted apoptosis-related protein levels and activated MAPK signaling pathway, whereas eckol protected cells from apoptosis by inhibiting MAPK signaling pathway. This was further reinforced by detailed investigations using MAPK inhibitors. Thus, our results demonstrated that inhibition of PM_2.5-induced cell apoptosis by eckol was through MAPK signaling pathway. In conclusion, eckol could protect skin HaCaT cells from PM_2.5-induced apoptosis via inhibiting ROS generation.

Efficient removal of p-nitrophenol from water using montmorillonite clay: insights into the adsorption mechanism, process optimization, and regeneration

The present research highlights the use of a montmorillonite clay to remove p-nitrophenol (PNP) from aqueous solution. The montmorillonite clay was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses, and zero point charge in order to establish the adsorption behavior-properties relationship. The physiochemical parameters like pH, initial PNP concentration, and adsorbent dose as well as their binary interaction effects on the PNP adsorption yield were statistically optimized using response surface methodology. As a result, 99.5% removal of PNP was obtained under the optimal conditions of pH 2, adsorbent dose of 2 g/l, and PNP concentration of 20 mg/l. The interaction between adsorbent dose and initial concentration was the most influencing interaction on the PNP removal efficiency. The mass transfer of PNP at the solution/adsorbent interface was described using pseudo-first-order and intraparticle diffusion. Langmuir isotherm well fitted the experimental equilibrium data with a satisfactory maximum adsorption capacity of 122.09 mg/g. The PNP adsorption process was thermodynamically spontaneous and endothermic. The regeneration study showed that the montmorillonite clay exhibited an excellent recycling capability. Overall, the montmorillonite clay is very attractive as an efficient, low-cost, eco-friendly, and recyclable adsorbent for the remediation of hazardous phenolic compounds in industrial effluents.

Correlation between indoor air pollution and adult respiratory health in Zunyi City in Southwest China: situation in two different seasons

BACKGROUND

Indoor environmental quality significantly influences the occurrence of asthma attack. Zunyi District has abundant coal reserves and is regarded as one of the cities that are most severely polluted by high levels of particulate matter in China. This study aimed to examine the correlation of indoor exposure with adult respiratory health, as well as the differences in effect between winter and summer.

METHODS

A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted among 1207 adult residents in Zunyi, Guizhou Province of Southwest China in winter and summer. Data on health variables related to asthma and home environmental factors were collected using a modified European Community Respiratory Health Survey II questionnaire. The following data were obtained: samples of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) inside and outside the households under study (n = 20); lung function status, including peak expiratory flow rate, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC ratio.

RESULT

The odds ratio (OR) for asthma-like symptoms and asthma in adults using coal stove for cooking or warming, relative to non-users, was 1.73 (95% CI, 1.11-2.69) in winter vs. 1.30 (95% CI, 0.79-2.14) in summer. Adult residents with exposure to cooking oil fumes were at a considerably higher risk of asthma-like symptoms and asthma [OR = 2.65 (95% CI, 1.25 to 5.61) in winter vs. OR = 7.93 (95% CI, 2.54 to 24.75] in summer] than those without such exposure. The prevalence of asthma-like symptoms and asthma was significantly higher in adults with high kitchen risk scores or high sleeping-area risk scores than in those with low scores in both seasons (p < 0.05). The relative kitchen and sleeping area PM2.5 concentrations were higher in winter than in summer (p < 0.05). Lung function was negatively associated with indoor kitchen and sleeping area relative PM2.5 concentration in winter rather than summer (p < 0.001). The effect of exposure to indoor risk factors on lung function among the residents was greater in winter than in summer (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Exposure to indoor risk factors, such as aerocontaminants from coal combustion, causes asthma symptoms and reduces pulmonary function. The effect of indoor risk factors on respiratory health among adults with such exposure was greater in winter than in summer.

Landfill air and odour emissions from an integrated waste management facility

A mixture of gases and obnoxious odours are major components of landfill emission. A dispersion modelling on air pollutants and odour emissions anticipated from a proposed Integrated Waste Management Facility was conducted considering five operating scenarios. Impacts of the predicted ground level concentrations of air pollutants (including carbon monoxide, CO; oxides of nitrogen, NOX; sulphur dioxide, SO2; particulate matter, PM and hydrocarbons, HC) and odour on ambient air quality were investigated using the 10-min 1 OU/m3 odour limit, CH4 Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) and the daily limits of CO, NOx, SO2, PM and HC. The anticipated maximum ground level concentration of emitted odour and CH4 are 0.0040 OU/m3 and 0.0349 ppm, respectively. Simultaneous operations of all the major components of the facility will generate the daily maximum concentrations of 7.34, 2.60, 7.31, 29.72 and 0.42 μg/m3, for CO, NOX, SO2, PM and HC, respectively. Generally, the facility impacts on ambient air quality will be within the acceptable limit.

Prevalence of childhood lead poisoning and respiratory disease associated with lead smelter emissions

BACKGROUND

The city of Port Pirie in South Australia has been a world leading centre for lead and zinc smelting and processing since 1889 that continues to cause contamination of its environment and resident population. This study quantifies the effect of lead and SO₂ emissions from Nyrstar Port Pirie Pty Ltd's smelter on blood lead and respiratory health outcomes, respectively, and establishes what air quality values are required to better protect human health.

METHOD

Blood lead and emergency department presentation data collected by South Australia Health (SA Health) and lead in air and SO₂ data collected by the South Australian Environment Protection Authority (SAEPA) were obtained and analysed to quantify health outcomes due to smelter emissions in Port Pirie. Regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between the concentration of lead in air and children's blood lead levels between the years of available data: 2003 to 2017. Ambient SO₂ concentrations (SAEPA) measured continuously between 2008 and 2018 were 24-hour averaged and compared to daily local emergency department respiratory presentation rates (available from July 2012 to October 2018). Rates of emergency department respiratory presentations at Port Pirie and regional comparators were calculated as age-standardised rates.

RESULTS

The data show that increases in ambient SO₂ concentrations are associated with increased rates of emergency department respiratory presentations of Port Pirie residents, in which children are over-represented. The 30-day rolling average of respiratory presentations was significantly associated (p < 0.05) with incremental increases in SO₂. Analysis of the relationship between lead in air and blood lead shows that annual geometric mean air lead concentrations need to be <0.11 μg/m³ to ensure the geometric mean blood lead of Port Pirie children under 5 years is ≤5 μg/dL. For children aged 24 months, lead in air needs to be no greater than 0.082 μg/m³ (annual geometric mean) to ensure geometric mean blood lead does not exceed 5 μg/dL.

CONCLUSION

Current smelting emissions continue to pose a clear risk of harm to Port Pirie children. Allowable emissions must be lowered significantly to limit adverse childhood health outcomes including respiratory illness and IQ, academic achievement and socio-behavioural problems that are associated with lead exposure at levels experienced by Port Pirie children. Current SO₂ levels are likely to be responsible for increased rates of emergency department respiratory presentations in Port Pirie compared with other South Australian locations. As a minimum, Australian SO₂ air quality standards need to be enforced in Port Pirie to better protect human health. Lead in air needs to be approximately 80% lower than the current national standard (0.5 μg/m³) to ensure that the geometric blood lead of children under 5 years is less than or equal to 5 μg/dL.

Skin permeation of oxides of nitrogen and sulfur from short-term exposure scenarios relevant to hazardous material incidents

Permeation of oxides of nitrogen and sulfur gases through skin and the consequences of dermal exposure are still poorly understood. We measured the penetration profile of three common industrial gases through skin, for short-term exposures relevant to HAZMAT scenarios. Time variations of gas concentration, clothing effects, temperature and humidity on epidermal absorption and penetration were assessed. Fabric off-gassing profiles were also investigated. The results show oxides of nitrogen (NO and NO₂) at airborne concentrations up to lethal inhalation levels (e.g. 3000 ppm) have little skin penetration ability. Skin absorption and reservoir effects were noted. Skin exposed to SO₂ (3000 ppm/30 min) shows negligible skin absorption or penetration. Fabric on skin marginally increased SO₂ absorption and subsequent ventilation did not reduce the absorbed fraction. Increased temperature and humidity had limited additional effect on skin penetration. Importantly, clothing demonstrated sink properties, especially for SO₂. Short-term skin exposure relevant to accidents will not significantly contribute to body burden. The greatest concern will likely be off-gassing of chemical-laden fabric for asthma suffers. The risk-based management approach is to avoid potential secondary inhalation from fabric off-gassing by removal of outer layer of bulky clothing. Decontamination and moving into an area of enhanced ventilation may also be advised.
