Abstract
A new class of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) based on Dy-oxide clusterfullerenes is synthesized. Three isomers of Dy2O@C82 with C s(6), C 3v(8), and C 2v(9) cage symmetries are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which shows that the endohedral Dy-(µ2-O)-Dy cluster has bent shape with very short Dy-O bonds. Dy2O@C82 isomers show SMM behavior with broad magnetic hysteresis, but the temperature and magnetization relaxation depend strongly on the fullerene cage. The short Dy-O distances and the large negative charge of the oxide ion in Dy2O@C82 result in the very strong magnetic anisotropy of Dy ions. Their magnetic moments are aligned along the Dy-O bonds and are antiferromagnetically (AFM) coupled. At low temperatures, relaxation of magnetization in Dy2O@C82 proceeds via the ferromagnetically (FM)-coupled excited state, giving Arrhenius behavior with the effective barriers equal to the AFM-FM energy difference. The AFM-FM energy differences of 5.4-12.9 cm-1 in Dy2O@C82 are considerably larger than in SMMs with {Dy2O2} bridges, and the Dy∙∙∙Dy exchange coupling in Dy2O@C82 is the strongest among all dinuclear Dy SMMs with diamagnetic bridges. Dy-oxide clusterfullerenes provide a playground for the further tuning of molecular magnetism via variation of the size and shape of the fullerene cage.

Abstract
A series of binuclear dysprosium compounds, namely, [Dy(api)]2 (1), [Dy(api)]2·2CH2Cl2 (2), [Dy(Clapi)]2·2C4H8O (3), and [Dy(Clapi)]2·2C3H6O (4) (H3api = 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3-bis[4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-azabut-3-enyl]-1,3-imidazoline; H3Clapi = 2-(2′-hydroxy-5′-chlorophenyl)-1,3-bis[3′-aza-4′-(2′′-hydroxy-5′′-chlorophenyl)prop-4′-en-1′-yl]-1,3-imidazolidine), have been isolated by the reactions of salen-type ligands H3api/H3Clapi with DyCl3·6H2O in different solvent systems. Structural analysis reveals that each salen-type ligand provides a heptadentate coordination pocket (N4O3) to encapsulate a DyIII ion and all of the DyIII centers in 1–4 adopt a distorted square antiprism geometry with D4d symmetry. Magnetic studies showed that compound 1 did not exhibit single-molecule magnetic (SMMs) behavior. With the introduction of different lattice solvents, compounds 2–4 showed filed-induced slow magnetic relaxation with barriers Ueff of 18.2 K (2), 28.0 K (3) and 16.4 K (4), respectively. Ab initio calculations were employed to interpret the magnetization behavior of 1–4. The combination of experimental and theoretical data reveal the importance of the weak exchange interaction between the DyIII ions in the observation of slow magnetic relaxation, and a relaxation mechanism has been developed to rationalize the observed difference in the Ueff values. The different lattice solvents influence Dy–O–Dy bond angles and thus alter the torsion of the square antiprism geometry, consequently resulting in distinct magnetic interactions and the magnetic behavior. Solvent-tuning changes the magnetic exchange interaction and results in different magnetic relaxation dynamics in Dy2 systems ligated by a μ-phenolato heptadentate Schiff base.![]()

Abstract
A series of Salen-type Zn(II)-Dy(III) complexes [L1Zn(II)ClDy(III)(acac)2]·H2O (1), [L1Zn(II)BrDy(III)(acac)2]·H2O (2), [L1Zn(II)(H2O)Dy(III)(acac)2]·CH2Cl2·PF6 (3), [L2Zn(II)(H2O)Dy(III)(acac)2]·PF6 (4), and Co(III)-Dy(III) complexes [L1Co(III)Br2Dy(III)(acac)2]·CH2Cl2 (5), [L2Co(III)Cl2Dy(III)(acac)Cl(MeO)] (6), [L2Co(III)Cl2Dy(III)(acac)Cl(H2O)] (7), and [L2Co(III)Cl2Dy(III)(NO3)2(MeO)] (8) heterobinuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) were synthesized and magnetically characterized. These complexes were constructed by incorporating diamagnetic Zn(II) and Co(III) ions with acetylacetone (acac) and compartmental Schiff-base ligands (H2L1 = N, N'-bis(2-oxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine; H2L2 = N, N'-bis(2-oxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane). In the Zn(II)-Dy(III) (1-4) system, the coordination environments of the Dy(III) ions are nearly identical, but the apical coordination atom to the Zn(II) ion is different. Complexes 1, 2, and 4 displayed no magnetic relaxation in the absence of external magnetic field, but complex 3 displayed more pronounced SMM behavior with a relaxation energy barrier Ueff/ kB 38 K and magnetic hysteresis at 1.8 K. The SMM performances of 5, 6, and 7 were enhanced significantly by incorporating an octahedral Co(III) instead of square-pyramidal Zn(II) and replacing one of acac- group around Dy(III) ion by a neutral O atom, displaying Ueff of 167, 118, and 75 K as well as magnetic hysteresis up to 3.5 K. These studies indicated that the remote diamagnetic Zn(II) and Co(III) ions played a key role, and the SMM properties were very strongly related to the special coordination atoms configuration around Dy(III) ion. When this coordination configuration around was broken as 8 exhibited, however, it resulted in a dramatically decreased SMM performance. From this work, the key factors that significantly affect the SMM performance of these heteronuclear Zn(II)/Co(III)-Dy(III) SMMs are unambiguously presented.

Abstract
By utilizing the quinolinic derivative, 8-carboxymethoxy-2-carboxylicquinoline (L), five transition metal coordination complexes, [M(L)(H2O)3]·H2O] (M = Mn (1), Co (2)), [Ni(L)(H2O)2] (3), and {[M(L)](H2O)} n (M = Ni (4), Cu (5)), were synthesized by hydrothermal methods employing similar synthetic strategies. The crystal structures, magnetism and high-field EPR were characterized for the obtained compounds. 1-3 are mononuclear compounds. 1 and 2 have pentagonal bipyramidal geometry, while 4 and 5 exhibit one-dimensional zig-zag chain. Direct current magnetic and EPR studies demonstrate that compound 2 has large and positive D value (∼70.4 cm-1), indicating the easy plane magnetic anisotropies of 2. This D value is the largest one in the reported Co(II) complexes with pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behavior was observed for 2 by the dynamic ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The dc magnetic susceptibility studies of 4 and 5 give similar weak MII-MII antiferromagnetic interactions ( J = -1.50 and -3.55 K for 4 and 5, respectively). High-field EPR results show that 4 can be considered as a quantum antiferromagnet.

Abstract
Two 3d-4f hetero-metal pentanuclear complexes with the formula {[CrIII2LnIII3L10(OH)6(H2O)2]Et3NH} [Ln=Tb (1), Dy (2); HL=pivalic acid, Et3N=triethylamine] have been produced. The metal core of each cluster is made up of a trigonal bipyramid with three LnIII ions (plane) and two CrIII ions (above and below) held together by six μ3-OH bridges. Also reported with this series is the diamagnetic CrIII-YIII analogue (3). Fortunately, we successfully prepared AlIII-LnIII analogues with the formula {[AlIII2LnIII3L10(OH)6(H2O)2]Et3NH⋅H2O} [Ln=Tb (4), Dy (5)], containing diamagnetic AlIII ions, which can be used to evaluate the CrIII-LnIII magnetic nature through a diamagnetic substitution method. Subsequently, static (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies reveal dominant ferromagnetic interactions between CrIII and LnIII ions. Dynamic (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies show frequency-dependent out-of-phase (χ'') signals for [CrIII2TbIII3] (1), [CrIII2DyIII3] (2), and [AlIII2DyIII3] (5), which are derived from the single-ion behavior of LnIII ions and/or the CrIII-LnIII ferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract
The discovery of graphene kicked off the curtain of atom-type two-dimensional (2D) materials. Layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as parallel molecule-based 2D materials are more designable and more diverse, and magnetism may be induced by their metal ion nodes. However, the multifunctional 2D plane-like MOFs are very difficult to obtain. Here we describe a Chinese pane-like 2D MOF constructed from the Ln3+ cation and the nanoscale luminescent tritopic ligand tris(4'-carboxybiphenyl)-amine, responding to the slow magnetic relaxation and luminescence properties, respectively. Notably, the Dy-Dy distances separated by the tritopic ligand are up to 2 nm. Such a 2D molecular material is expected to have potential applications in optoelectronics and multimodal sensing.

Abstract
Two isostructural lanthanide (Ln) hybrid complexes co-bridged by organic oxalate and inorganic hypophosphite, [Ln(oxa)(H2PO2)(H2O)2] (oxa = oxalate; Ln = Gd (1), Dy (2)), were solvothermally prepared with the goal of elucidating the role of a hybrid framework in the generation of novel molecular magnetic materials. The title compounds feature a two dimensional (2D) hybrid layer. The LnIII ions are octa-coordinated with distorted square antiprism geometry. The adjacent LnIII ions are co-bridged by hypophosphite and one type of oxalate ligand to form 1D hybrid chains, which are further linked by a second type of oxalate ligand to generate the resulting 2D framework. Magnetic investigations reveal that compound 1 features a large magnetocaloric effect with -ΔS = 46.60 J kg-1 K-1 (134.39 mJ cm-3 K-1), due to the combined advantages of organic oxalate and inorganic hypophosphite ligands, while compound 2 displays slow magnetic relaxation.

Abstract
The synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic properties of four heterometallic complexes with formulas Ln2M(OQ)8 [Ln(iii) = Dy, M(ii) = Ca (1), Mg (2); Ln(iii) = Er, M(ii) = Ca (3), Mg (4); HOQ = 8-hydroxyquinoline] are reported. Complexes display a perfectly linear arrangement of three metal ions involving two terminal Ln(iii) ions and one central alkaline earth M(ii) ion, and they are bridged by three phenolato oxygen atoms from three 8-hydroxyquinoline ligands. Direct-current (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies show that there exists a long-range ferromagnetic (FM) interaction between two f-electronic centers in Dy-based complexes 1 and 2 albeit they are separated by diamagnetic alkaline earth ions, and the FM interaction has been successfully reproduced by ab initio calculations. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that complexes 1 and 2 exhibit significant single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviors. This is mostly attributed to the parallel magnetic axes of individual Dy(iii) sites aligning closely to the Dy-M-Dy direction, and the linearly extending magnetic susceptibility tensors of each ion lead to the FM interaction. The dc and ac susceptibility studies of the intramolecularly diluted complexes reveal that the f-f coupling suppresses the QTMs significantly in the absence of the external magnetic field.
