π-Conjugated phospholes and their incorporation into devices: components with a great deal of potential

Ni-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrophosphinylation of Conjugated Enynes and Mechanistic Studies

The catalytic asymmetric synthesis of P-stereogenic phosphines is an efficient strategy to access structurally diverse chiral phosphines that could serve as organocatalysts and ligands to transition metals and motifs of antiviral drugs. Herein, we describe a Ni catalyzed highly regio and enantioselective hydrophosphinylation reaction of secondary phosphine oxides and enynes. This method afforded a plethora of alkenyl phosphine oxides which could serve as valuable precursors to bidentate ligands. A new type of mechanism was discovered by combined kinetic studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which was opposed to the widely accepted Chalk–Harrod type mechanism. Notably, the alkene moiety which could serve as a directing group by coordinating with the Ni catalyst in the transition state, plays a vital role in determining the reactivity, regio and enantioselectivity.

A Ni-catalyzed hydrophosphinylation reaction of enynes was reported with excellent regio and enantioselectivity. A protonation mechanism was uncovered by combined kinetic studies and DFT calculations, which may lead to the discovery of other hydrofunctionalization reactions.

Annulation of phosphole sulfides via [3 + 2] cycloaddition with nitrones

We developed a facile pathway for the construction of the phospholene fused isoxazolidine skeleton through the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of phosphole sulfides.

One-pot heteroannulation toward phosphaperylene diimides with high luminescence and out-of-plane anisotropy

This work presents a P-heteroannulation strategy on perylene diimides in one pot. The resulting phosphaperylene diimides demonstrate an out-of-plane dipole moment of 8.10 D and high fluorescence quantum yields of up to 94%.

Acid-Catalyzed Cascade Reaction of 2-Alkylfurans with α,β-Unsaturated Ketones: A Shortcut to 2,3,5-Trisubstituted Furans

The convergent one-pot method toward trisubstituted furans has been developed. The key transformation behind the synthetic protocol comprises the cascade acid-catalyzed conjugated addition of furans to commercially available or easily accessible α,β-unsaturated ketones followed by the rearrangement of the intermediate Michael adducts into isomeric furans. The prospect of utilizing the target products as building blocks for the preparation of potential functional molecules for organic electronics has been demonstrated.

Rational Design of Broadly Absorbing Boron Dipyrromethene-Carbazole Dyads for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: A DFT Study

Structure engineering of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) organic dye, to increase its light-harvesting efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cells, has been the subject of rigorous research recently. Herein, we report on the rational designing of BODIPY-carbazole (D-π-A-A) dyads using density functional theory (DFT). The structure of BODIPY-carbazole was first modified by substituting an electron-donating -N(CH3)2 group at the electron-rich carbazole moiety, and two electron-accepting -COOH groups at the BODIPY core. The DFT calculations showed a significant lowering of the band gap from 2.9 eV (pristine BODIPY-carbazole dyad) to 1.87 eV (modified BODIPY-carbazole dyad). Further modification was demonstrated by the incorporation of heterocyclic rings such as thiophene (denoted as D1T), furan (D1F), and phosphole (D1P) into BODIPY-carbazole moiety, which red-shifted the light absorption spectra and consequently improved the light-harvesting efficiency of the dyes. The interactions at the dye/semiconductor interface were studied by employing their bridged-bidentate adsorption models over the titanium dioxide (TiO2)38 nanocluster. Results suggested that the electrons can be efficiently injected from the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of dyes into the conduction band of TiO2. Among the three dyads, D1P exhibited superior photovoltaic performance with a maximum power conversion efficiency of 13.50%, a short-circuit current density (J sc) of 27.2 mA·cm-2, and an open-circuit voltage (V oc) of 731 mV. The structurally configured new D1P dye can be used as a potential alternative photosensitizer for high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells.

Trifunctional Silyl Groups as Anchoring Units in the Preparation of Luminescent Phosphole-Silica Hybrids

A synthetic strategy to β-silylphospholes with three methoxy, ethoxy, chloro, hydrido, or phenyl substituents at silicon has been developed, starting from trimethoxy, triethoxy, or triphenyl silyl substituted phenyl phosphanides and 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiyne. These trifunctional silylphospholes were attached to the surface of uniform spheric silica particles (15 μm) and, for comparison, to a polyhedral silsesquioxane (POSS)-trisilanol as a molecular model to explore their luminescent properties in comparison with the free phospholes. Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate any electronic perturbation of the phosphole system by the trifunctional silyl anchoring unit. For the immobilized phospholes, cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning NMR measurements (¹³C, ²⁹Si, and ³¹P) were carried out to explore the bonding situation to the silica surface. Thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were performed to approximate the amount of phospholes covering the silica surface. Identity and purity of all novel phospholes have been established with standard techniques (multinuclear NMR, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis) and X-ray diffraction for the POSS derivative.

Heavier element-containing aromatics of [4n+2]-electron systems

While the implication of the aromaticity concept has been dramatically expanded to date since its emergence in 1865, the classical [4n+2]/4n-electron counting protocol still plays an essential role in evaluating the aromatic nature of compounds. Over the last few decades, a variety of heavier heterocycles featuring the formal [4n+2] π-electron arrangements have been developed, which allows for assessing their aromatic nature. In this review, we present recent developments of the [4n+2]-electron systems of heavier heterocycles involving group 13-15 elements. The synthesis, spectroscopic data, structural parameters, computational data, and reactivity are introduced.

Phosphetes via Transition Metal Free Ring Closure - Taking the Proper Turn at a Thermodynamic Crossing

A transition metal free route to phosphetes featuring an exocyclic alkene unit is presented. In this approach phosphanides are added to a variety of diynes generating phosphaallylic intermediates which depending on the reaction conditions transform either to phosphetes or the corresponding phospholes. Investigation of the reaction mechanism by combined quantum chemical and experimental means identifies phosphole formation as thermodynamically controlled reaction path, whereas kinetic control furnishes the corresponding phosphetes. Structural and luminescence properties of the rare class of phosphetes are explored, as well as for selected key intermediates.

Tetraphenylethylene-Based Multicomponent Emissive Metallacages as Solid-State Fluorescent Materials

The construction of solid-state fluorescent materials with high quantum yield and good processability is of vital importance in the preparation of organic light-emitting devices. Herein, a series of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based multicomponent emissive metallacages are prepared by the coordination-driven self-assembly of tetra-(4-pyridylphenyl)ethylene, cis-Pt(PEt₃ )₂ (OTf)₂ and tetracarboxylic ligands. These metallacages exhibit good emission both in solution and in the solid state because the coordination bonds and aggregation restrict the molecular motions of TPE synergistically, which suppresses the non-radiative decay of these metallacages. Impressively, one of the metallacages achieves very high fluorescence quantum yield (Φ_F =88.46 %) in the solid state, which is further used as the coatings of a blue LED bulb to achieve white-light emission. The study not only provides a general method to the preparation of TPE-based metallacages but also explores their applications as solid-state fluorescent materials, which will promote the future design and applications of metallacages as useful emissive devices.

The influence of the formal replacement of thiophenes by stannoles in terthiophene and sexithiophene on the optoelectronic properties and electrochemical behavior

Polystannoles with thienyl co-monomers are in many ways similar to polythiophenes, but they display much reduced band gaps. However, their polymerization processes are not well researched. Thiophene can be oxidatively electropolymerized, but as stannoles are organometallic, the fundamental question arises whether their inclusion in a conjugated backbone can protect them sufficiently to be able to perform an oxidative electropolymerization. As well-defined oligothiophenes can be used as models to understand the optical and electronic properties of polythiophenes, we transposed this concept on stannole containing polymers; therefore we synthesized a monomeric 1 and dimeric thiophene-flanked stannole 2 and investigated their optoelectronic properties comparatively including polystannoles and the corresponding oligothiophenes in our analysis. With respect to monomer 1, a significantly redshifted absorption (λmax = 510 nm, Δ = 93 nm) and a small optical band gap (Eg,opt(2) = 2.13 eV), close to the bandgap of polymeric stannoles, was observed. In comparison to oligothiophenes, these thienyl-flanked stannoles exhibited a redshift in absorption and emission as well as a lower oxidation potential. Despite these differences, they showed an oligothiophene-like electrochemical behavior. Stannole 1 and the dimer 2 were subjected to an electropolymerization process. This process was investigated in detail by spectroelectrochemical methods which showed that radical cation species were formed in situ but readily decomposed. Nevertheless, under the milder multiscan cyclovoltammetric conditions, electropolymerization occurred as shown by cyclovoltammetry.

2,3-Diarylbenzo[b]arsole: Structural Modification and Polymerization for Tuning of Photophysical Properties

2,3-Diarylbenzo[b]arsoles were synthesized from zirconacycles and diiodophenylarsine. The structural modification to the luminophore was attained through diarylacetylene precursors, Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, and oxidation of the arsenic atom. The emission properties were controlled according to these modifications. The 2,3-diarylbenzo[b]arsoles showed aggregation-induced emission enhancement; the stronger emission was observed in the solid states than in solutions. In addition, Suzuki-Miyaura polycondensation and olefin metathesis polymerization produced main- and side-chain polymers, respectively. The resultant polymers showed different emission behaviors such as aggregation caused quenching and aggregation induced emission enhancement.

Thiophene-Fused Naphthodiphospholes: Modulation of the Structural and Electronic Properties of Polycyclic Aromatics by Precise Fusion of Heteroles

For polycyclic aromatics with heterole-fused structures, the orientation of fused heterole rings as well as the geometry of their fused structures has a large impact on the physicochemical properties. In this study, a series of isomers of thiophene-fused naphthodiphospholes was designed and synthesized. Systematic investigation unveiled the explicit impact of heterole-fused structures on their structural and electronic properties. The isomers with 1,2/5,6-fused structure display phosphorescence due to enhanced spin-orbit coupling, whereas the isomers with 2,3/6,7-fused structure exhibit intense fluorescence. The trans isomers exhibited 1D slip π-stacked arrangement. In contrast, the cis isomers displayed 2D herringbone structure or columnar structure with a cavity. Therefore, the precisely controlled fusion of heterole rings is a universal approach to uncover their intrinsic properties for versatile applications as organic functional materials.

Cationic Organophosphorus Chromophores: A Diamond in the Rough among Ionic Dyes

Tunable electron-accepting properties of the cationic phosphorus center, its geometry and unique preparative chemistry that allows combining this unit with diversity of π-conjugated motifs, define the appealing photophysical and electrochemical characteristics of organophosphorus ionic chromophores. This Minireview summarizes the achievements in the synthesis of the π-extended molecules functionalized with P-cationic fragments, modulation of their properties by means of structural modification, and emphasizes the important effect of cation-anion interactions, which can drastically change physical behavior of these two-component systems.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Optical Properties of Benzene-Fused Tetracyclic and Pentacyclic Stiboles

The expectation that antimony (Sb) compounds should display phosphorescence emissions based on the “heavy element effect” prompted our interest in the introduction of antimony to a biaryl as the bridging atom in a fused heterole system. Herein, the synthesis, molecular structures, and optical properties of novel benzene-fused heteroacenes containing antimony or arsenic atoms are described. The stiboles and arsole were prepared by the condensation of dibromo(phenyl)stibane or dichloro(phenyl)arsine with dilithium intermediates derived from the corresponding dibromo compounds. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and X-ray crystal analysis revealed that the linear pentacyclic stibole was highly symmetric in both the solution and crystal states. In contrast, the curved pentacyclic stibole adopted a helical structure in solution, and surprisingly, only M helical molecules were crystallized from the racemate. All synthesized compounds produced very weak or no emissions at room temperature or in the solid state. In contrast, the linear penta- and tetracyclic stiboles exhibited clear phosphorescence emissions in the CHCl₃ frozen matrix at 77 K under aerobic conditions.

Concise Synthesis of Phospholene and Its P-Stereogenic Derivatives

A simple method to build phospholene derivatives has been achieved in a one-pot reaction with readily available o-alkynylaryl bromides and alkylphosphine oxides. This method is also applicable to synthesize P-stereogenic phospholenes, and the resulting chiral phosphine was utilized as a ligand for coordination chemistry.

2-Arylbenzo[b]arsoles: an experimental and computational study on the relationship between structural and photophysical properties

Benzo[b]arsole derivatives, being arsenic analogues of indole, were synthesized by utilizing a safely prepared arsenic precursor. The structural and photophysical properties of the obtained 2-arylbenzo[b]arsoles were experimentally and computationally studied in comparison with those of 1,2,5-triarylarsoles and 9-phenylarsafluorene. It was found that the emission color and/or quantum yield were significantly affected by substituents on the luminescent center and metal-coordination to the arsenic atom. This is the first study on the structure-property relationship of benzo[b]arsole derivatives.

Isolable Dibenzo[a,e]disilapentalene with a Dichotomic Reactivity toward CO2

The first dibenzo[a,e]disilapentalene with two Si═C moieties in the heteropentalene core has been prepared. Its solid-state structure and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Si═C bonds are involved in an expanded π-conjugated system. The Si═C bonds show a distinguished reactivity toward CO₂, depending on the reaction conditions. While one product results from fixation of two CO₂ molecules across one Si═C bond, two different products could be isolated from the reaction of three CO₂ molecules with both Si═C bonds. The mechanism has been uncovered by DFT calculations.

Unique Role of Heterole-Fused Structures in Aromaticity and Physicochemical Properties of 7,8-Dehydropurpurins

Porphyrins with a fused five-membered ring, such as 7,8-dehydropurpurins, have appeared as an emerging class of unique porphyrinoids. Their altered absorption spectra, relatively short lifetimes of excited states, and small HOMO-LUMO gaps arise from the harmony of the antiaromatic 20π-circuit and the aromatic 18π-circuit. In this regard, the electronic properties of 7,8-dehydropurpurins are expected to be controlled by modulating the contribution of the antiaromatic π-circuit to the whole aromaticity. Here the comparison of pyrrole- and phosphole-fused 7,8-dehydropurpurins is reported in terms of their aromaticity and physicochemical properties. The spectroscopic investigation revealed the larger contribution of the antiaromatic 24π-circuit in pyrrole-fused 7,8-dehyrdopurpurins than in phosphole-fused 7,8-dehydropurpurins. The DFT calculations also supported the feasibility of tuning the aromaticity of 7,8-dehydropurpurins by heterole-fused structures. Thus, the introduction of heterole-fused structures into porphyrinoids is a universal strategy to get new insight into aromaticity and their intrinsic properties in cyclic π-conjugated molecules.

Synthesis, Electronic Properties and OLED Devices of Chromophores Based on λ5 -Phosphinines

A new series of 2,4,6-triaryl-λ5 -phosphinines have been synthesized that contain different substituents both on the carbon backbone and the phosphorus atom of the six-membered heterocycle. Their optical and redox properties were studied in detail, supported by in-depth theoretical calculations. The modularity of the synthetic strategy allowed the establishment of structure-property relationships for this class of compounds and an OLED based on a blue phosphinine emitter could be developed for the first time.

Preparation of 2-phospholene oxides by the isomerization of 3-phospholene oxides

A series of 1-substituted-3-methyl-2-phospholene oxides was prepared from the corresponding 3-phospholene oxides by double bond rearrangement. The 2-phospholene oxides could be obtained by heating the 3-phospholene oxides in methanesulfonic acid, or via the formation of cyclic chlorophosphonium salts. Whereas mixtures of the 2- and 3-phospholene oxides formed, when the isomerization of 3-phospholene oxides was attempted under thermal conditions, or in the presence of a base. The mechanisms of the various double bond migration pathways were elucidated by quantum chemical calculations.

Synthesis of triphenylene-fused phosphole oxides via C-H functionalizations

The synthesis of triphenylene-fused phosphole oxides has been achieved through two distinct C–H functionalization reactions as key steps. The phosphole ring was constructed by a three-component coupling of 3-(methoxymethoxy)phenylzinc chloride, an alkyne, and dichlorophenylphosphine, involving the regioselective C–H activation of the C2 position of the arylzinc intermediate via 1,4-cobalt migration. The resulting 7-hydroxybenzo[b]phosphole derivative was used for further π-extension through Suzuki–Miyaura couplings and a Scholl reaction, the latter closing the triphenylene ring. The absorption and emission spectra of the thus-synthesized compounds illustrated their nature as hybrids of triphenylene and benzo[b]phosphole.

Formal Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Phosphole C-H Activation for the Synthesis of Pentasubstituted Phospholes

Unprecedented formal transition-metal-catalyzed phosphole C-H functionalization is described in this paper. Pentasubstituted phospholes were prepared via the copper-catalyzed reaction of 1,3,4-trisubstituted phosphole with aryl iodides or bromides under distinct conditions. The developed methodology is able to accommodate a wide variety of substituents, including aryl, heteroaryl, and alkenyl.

Isomeric Dithienophosphepines: The Impact of Ring Fusion on Electronic and Structural Properties

The synthesis and extensive experimental (X-ray crystallography, UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry) and theoretical (DFT calculations) characterization of two isomeric dithieno[b,f]phosphepines (DTPs) are presented herein. The relative orientation of the phosphepine and the thiophene moieties has a decisive impact on the electronic and structural properties of these compounds. Moreover, the thiophene units allow for a facile subsequent functionalization through direct Pd-catalyzed C-H coupling, which renders DTPs highly promising building blocks for organophosphorus functional materials.

Naphthyl-Fused Phosphepines: Luminescent Contorted Polycyclic P-Heterocycles

This article presents the synthesis of a new family of naphthyl-fused phosphepines through Ni-mediated C-C coupling. Interestingly, the chlorophosphine oxide intermediate shows strong resistance toward oxidation/hydrolysis owing to a combination of steric hindrance and pnictogen interactions. However, it can undergo substitution reactions under specific conditions. The optical/redox properties and the electronic structure of these new π-systems were studied experimentally (UV/Vis absorption, emission, cyclic voltammetry) and computationally (TD-DFT calculations, NICS investigation). Taking advantage of the luminescence of these derivatives, a blue-emitting OLED has been prepared, highlighting that these novel π-conjugated P-heterocycles appear to be promising building blocks for solid-state lighting applications.

Photochromic Barbiturate Pendant-Containing Benzo[b]phosphole Oxides with Co-Assembly Property and Photoinduced Morphological Changes

A series of novel barbiturate pendant-containing benzo[b]phosphole oxides has been demonstrated to exhibit photochromic and co-assembly properties. Both the open form and the photogenerated closed form of the diarylethene-based benzo[b]phosphole oxides have displayed color changes with new appearance of the bathochromic-shifted lowest-energy absorption bands upon addition of the H-bonding ditopic receptor that is complementary to the barbiturate groups, probably resulting in the formation of a supramolecular polymer. The co-assembly mixtures have displayed dissociation and association processes upon heating and cooling, respectively. Moreover, both the unassembled and co-assembled states of the benzo[b]phosphole oxide have exhibited photoinduced coloration, leading to a near-infrared absorption behavior. Multiaddressable states of the co-assembly mixture with multiple colors have been achieved via the combination of photochromism and thermochromism. More interestingly, photoinduced morphological changes from extensive porous network structures to ring-like aggregates have been observed for the co-assembly upon photoirradiation. The present work provides important insight for further developments of the multiaddressable systems and the supramolecular polymers with photo- and thermo-responsive behaviors, paving the way for the future design of photochromic materials with interesting photocontrollable functions.

Topotactic Synthesis of Phosphabenzene-Functionalized Porous Organic Polymers: Efficient Ligands in CO2 Conversion

Progress toward the preparation of porous organic polymers (POPs) with task-specific functionalities has been exceedingly slow-especially where polymers containing low-oxidation phosphorus in the structure are concerned. A two-step topotactic pathway for the preparation of phosphabenzene-based POPs (Phos-POPs) under metal-free conditions is reported, without the use of unstable phosphorus-based monomers. The synthetic route allows additional functionalities to be introduced into the porous polymer framework with ease. As an example, partially fluorinated Phos-POPs (F-Phos-POPs) were obtained with a surface area of up to 591 m²  g^-1 . After coordination with Ru species, a Ru/F-Phos-POPs catalyst exhibited high catalytic efficiency in the formylation of amines (turnover frequency up to 204 h^-1 ) using a CO₂ /H₂ mixture, in comparison with the non-fluorinated analogue (43 h^-1 ) and a Au/TiO₂ heterogeneous catalysts reported previously (<44 h^-1 ). This work describes a practical method for synthesis of porous organic phosphorus-based polymers with applications in transition-metal-based heterogeneous catalysis.

Transition metal-free phosphonocarboxylation of alkenes with carbon dioxide via visible-light photoredox catalysis

Catalytic difunctionalization of alkenes has been an ideal strategy to generate structurally complex molecules with diverse substitution patterns. Although both phosphonyl and carboxyl groups are valuable functional groups, the simultaneous incorporation of them via catalytic difunctionalization of alkenes, ideally from abundant, inexpensive and easy-to-handle raw materials, has not been realized. Herein, we report the phosphonocarboxylation of alkenes with CO2 via visible-light photoredox catalysis. This strategy is sustainable, general and practical, providing facile access to important β-phosphono carboxylic acids, including structurally complex unnatural α-amino acids. Diverse alkenes, including enamides, styrenes, enolsilanes and acrylates, undergo such reactions efficiently under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, this method represents a rare example of redox-neutral difunctionalization of alkenes with H-P(O) compounds, including diaryl- and dialkyl- phosphine oxides and phosphites. Importantly, these transition-metal-free reactions also feature low catalyst loading, high regio- and chemo-selectivities, good functional group tolerance, easy scalability and potential for product derivatization.
