Design and Advanced Manufacturing of NU-1000 Metal-Organic Frameworks with Future Perspectives for Environmental and Renewable Energy Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a relatively new family of materials that attract lots of attention thanks to their unique features such as hierarchical porosity, active metal centers, versatility of linkers/metal nodes, and large surface area. Among the extended list of MOFs, Zr-based-MOFs demonstrate comparably superior chemical and thermal stabilities, making them ideal candidates for energy and environmental applications. As a Zr-MOF, NU-1000 is first synthesized at Northwestern University. A comprehensive review of various approaches to the synthesis of NU-1000 MOFs for obtaining unique surface properties (e.g., diverse surface morphologies, large surface area, and particular pore size distribution) and their applications in the catalysis (electro-, and photo-catalysis), CO2 reduction, batteries, hydrogen storage, gas storage/separation, and other environmental fields are presented. The review further outlines the current challenges in the development of NU-1000 MOFs and their derivatives in practical applications, revealing areas for future investigation.

Detection and treatment of mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants in aqueous environments based on electrochemical technology: recent advances

Mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are widely distributed and severely pollute the aqueous environment due to natural and human activities, particularly human activity. It is crucial to identify and address them in order to reduce the dangers and threats they pose to biological processes and ecosystems. In the fields of sensor detection and water treatment, electrochemistry plays a crucial role as a trustworthy and environmentally friendly technology. In order to accomplish trace detection while enhancing detection accuracy and precision, researchers have created and studied sensors using a range of materials based on electrochemical processes, and their results have demonstrated good performance. One cannot overlook the challenges associated with treating aromatic pollutants, including mono and polycyclic. Much work has been done and good progress has been achieved in order to address these challenges. This study discusses the mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon sensor detection and electrochemical treatment technologies for contaminants in the aqueous environment. Additionally mentioned are the sources, distribution, risks, hazards, and problems in the removal of pollutants. The obstacles to be overcome and the future development plans of the field are then suggested by summarizing and assessing the research findings of the researchers.

The Promise and Potential of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Covalent Organic Frameworks in Vaccine Nanotechnology

The immune system's complexity and ongoing evolutionary struggle against deleterious pathogens underscore the value of vaccination technologies, which have been bolstering human immunity for over two centuries. Despite noteworthy advancements over these 200 years, three areas remain recalcitrant to improvement owing to the environmental instability of the biomolecules used in vaccines─the challenges of formulating them into controlled release systems, their need for constant refrigeration to avoid loss of efficacy, and the requirement that they be delivered via needle owing to gastrointestinal incompatibility. Nanotechnology, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), has emerged as a promising avenue for confronting these challenges, presenting a new frontier in vaccine development. Although these materials have been widely explored in the context of drug delivery, imaging, and cancer immunotherapy, their role in immunology and vaccine-related applications is a recent yet rapidly developing field. This review seeks to elucidate the prospective use of MOFs and COFs for biomaterial stabilization, eliminating the necessity for cold chains, enhancing antigen potency as adjuvants, and potentializing needle-free delivery of vaccines. It provides an expansive and critical viewpoint on this rapidly evolving field of research and emphasizes the vital contribution of chemists in driving further advancements.

Mechanically Enhanced Detoxification of Chemical Warfare Agent Simulants by a Two-Dimensional Piezoresponsive Metal-Organic Framework

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) refer to toxic chemical substances used in warfare. Recently, CWAs have been a critical threat for public safety due to their high toxicity. Metal-organic frameworks have exhibited great potential in protecting against CWAs due to their high crystallinity, stable structure, large specific surface area, high porosity, and adjustable structure. However, the metal clusters of most reported MOFs might be highly consumed when applied in CWA hydrolysis. Herein, we fabricated a two-dimensional piezoresponsive UiO-66-F4 and subjected it to CWA simulant dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) detoxification under sonic conditions. The results show that sonication can effectively enhance the removal performance under optimal conditions; the reaction rate constant k was upgraded 45% by sonication. Moreover, the first-principle calculation revealed that the band gap could be further widened with the application of mechanical stress, which was beneficial for the generation of 1O2, thus further upgrading the detoxification performance toward DMNP. This work demonstrated that mechanical vibration could be introduced to CWA protection, but promising applications are rarely reported.

Time-Resolved Spectroscopy for Dynamic Investigation of Photoresponsive Metal-Organic Frameworks

Photoresponsive MOFs with precise and adjustable reticular structures are attractive for light conversion applications. Uncovering the photoinduced carrier dynamics lays the essential foundation for the further development and optimization of the MOF material. With the application of time-resolved spectroscopy, photophysical processes including excimer formation, energy transfer/migration, and charge transfer/separation have been widely investigated. However, the identification of distinct photophysical processes in real experimental MOF spectra still remains difficult due to the spectral and dynamic complexity of MOFs. In this Perspective, we summarize the typical spectral features of these photophysical processes and the related analysis methods for dynamic studies performed by time-resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Based on the recent understanding of excited-state properties of photoresponsive MOFs and the discussion of challenges and future outlooks, this Perspective aims to provide convenience for MOF kinetic analysis and contribute to the further development of photoresponsive MOF material.

Antibacterial, antibiofilm, and antioxidant activities of two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on 4,6-diamino-2-pyrimidinethiol with Zn and Co metal ions as coordination polymers

In the present era, the increase in free radical species (FRs) and multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria represents a major worldwide concern for public health. Biofilm development and the overuse and misuse of antibiotics could lead to the adaptation of bacteria to antimicrobial agents. Consequently, finding novel multifunctional species with antibacterial, antioxidant, and antibiofilm properties has become crucial in the fight against challenging bacterial infections and chronic inflammatory conditions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with zinc and cobalt metal centers are widely utilized in biological and environmental remediation owing to their versatility. In this study, multifunctional Zn-MOFs and Co-MOFs were successfully synthesized with zinc and cobalt as metal centers and 4,6-diamino-2-pyrimidinethiol as an organic linker using a hydrothermal technique. Numerous characterization techniques were used to fully examine the MOF structure, functionality, chemical makeup, crystalline structure, surface appearance, thermal behavior, and magnetic characteristics; the techniques included XPS, PXRD, FTIR, FESEM, EDX, UV-visible, BET, BJH, TGA/DTG, DSC, and magnetic susceptibility measurement. The antioxidant, antibacterial, and antibiofilm activities of the MOFs were examined, and they demonstrated potent activity in each of these aspects. The proposed mechanisms of antibacterial activity suggest that bacterial cell death results from multiple toxic effects, including electrostatic interaction and lipid peroxidation, when MOFs are attached to bacteria, leading to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Zn-MOFs exhibit high antibacterial and antibiofilm efficacy owing to their large surface-to-volume ratio and porous nature, while Co-MOFs exhibit high antioxidant capacity owing to their redox properties.

Bimetallic CPM-37(Ni,Fe) metal-organic framework: enhanced porosity, stability and tunable composition

A newly synthesized series of bimetallic CPM-37(Ni,Fe) metal-organic frameworks with different iron content (Ni/Fe ≈ 2, 1, 0.5, named CPM-37(Ni2Fe), CPM-37(NiFe) and CPM-37(NiFe2)) demonstrated high N2-based specific SBET surface areas of 2039, 1955, and 2378 m2 g-1 for CPM-37(Ni2Fe), CPM-37(NiFe), and CPM-37(NiFe2), having much higher values compared to the monometallic CPM-37(Ni) and CPM-37(Fe) with 87 and 368 m2 g-1 only. It is rationalized that the mixed-metal nature of the materials increases the structural robustness due to the better charge balance at the coordination bonded cluster, which opens interesting application-oriented possibilities for mixed-metal CPM-37 and other less-stable MOFs. In this work, the CPM-37-derived α,β-Ni(OH)2, γ-NiO(OH), and, plausibly, γ-FeO(OH) phases obtained via decomposition in the alkaline medium demonstrated a potent electrocatalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The ratio Ni : Fe ≈ 2 from CPM-37(Ni2Fe) showed the best OER activity with a small overpotential of 290 mV at 50 mA cm-2, low Tafel slope of 39 mV dec-1, and more stable OER performance compared to RuO2 after 20 h chronopotentiometry at 50 mA cm-2.

Polymorphism and Structural Variety in Sn(II) Carboxylate Coordination Polymers Revealed from Structure Solution of Microcrystals

The crystal structures of four coordination polymers constructed from Sn(II) and polydentate carboxylate ligands are reported. All are prepared under hydrothermal conditions in KOH or LiOH solutions (either water or methanol-water) at 130-180 °C and crystallize as small crystals, microns or less in size. Single-crystal structure solution and refinement are performed using synchrotron X-ray diffraction for two materials and using 3D electron diffraction (3DED) for the others. Sn2 (1,3,5-BTC)(OH), where 1,3,5-BTC is benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate, is a new polymorph of this composition and has a three-dimensionally connected structure with potential for porosity. Sn(H-1,3,5-BTC) retains a partially protonated ligand and has a 1D chain structure bound by hydrogen bonding via ─COOH groups. Sn(H-1,2,4-BTC) contains an isomeric ligand, benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylate, and contains inorganic chains in a layered structure held by hydrogen bonding. Sn2 (DOBDC), where DOBDC is 2,5-dioxido-benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate, is a new polymorph for this composition and has a three-dimensionally connected structure where both carboxylate and oxido groups bind to the tin centers to create a dense network with dimers of tin. In all materials, the Sn centers are found in highly asymmetric coordination, as expected for Sn(II). For all materials phase purity of the bulk is confirmed using powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and infrared spectroscopy.

Probing the stability of metal-organic frameworks by structure-responsive mass spectrometry imaging

The widespread application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is seriously hindered by their structural instability and it is still very challenging to probe the stability of MOFs during application by current techniques. Here, we report a novel structure-responsive mass spectrometry (SRMS) imaging technique to probe the stability of MOFs. We discovered that intact CuBTC (as a model of MOFs) could generate the characteristic peaks of organic ligands and carbon cluster anions in laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry, but these peaks were significantly changed when the structure of CuBTC was dissociated, thus enabling a label-free probing of the stability. Furthermore, SRMS can be performed in imaging mode to visualize the degradation kinetics and reveal the spatial heterogeneity of the stability of CuBTC. This technique was successfully applied in different application scenarios (in water, moist air, and CO2) and also validated with different MOFs. It thus provides a versatile new tool for better design and application of environment-sensitive materials.

A comprehensive transformer-based approach for high-accuracy gas adsorption predictions in metal-organic frameworks

Gas separation is crucial for industrial production and environmental protection, with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offering a promising solution due to their tunable structural properties and chemical compositions. Traditional simulation approaches, such as molecular dynamics, are complex and computationally demanding. Although feature engineering-based machine learning methods perform better, they are susceptible to overfitting because of limited labeled data. Furthermore, these methods are typically designed for single tasks, such as predicting gas adsorption capacity under specific conditions, which restricts the utilization of comprehensive datasets including all adsorption capacities. To address these challenges, we propose Uni-MOF, an innovative framework for large-scale, three-dimensional MOF representation learning, designed for multi-purpose gas prediction. Specifically, Uni-MOF serves as a versatile gas adsorption estimator for MOF materials, employing pure three-dimensional representations learned from over 631,000 collected MOF and COF structures. Our experimental results show that Uni-MOF can automatically extract structural representations and predict adsorption capacities under various operating conditions using a single model. For simulated data, Uni-MOF exhibits remarkably high predictive accuracy across all datasets. Additionally, the values predicted by Uni-MOF correspond with the outcomes of adsorption experiments. Furthermore, Uni-MOF demonstrates considerable potential for broad applicability in predicting a wide array of other properties.

Silver Nanoparticle-Functionalized Postsynthetically Modified Thiol MOF UiO-66-NH-SH for Efficient CO2 Fixation

Thiols are essential functional groups imparting unique properties, such as reactivity and selectivity, to many vital enzymes and biomolecules. The integration of electronically soft thiol groups within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) yields elevated reactivity and a pronounced affinity for soft metal ions. However, the scarcity of thiol-based ligands and synthetic challenges hinder the advancement of thiol-based MOFs. To bypass the difficulties of synthesizing thiol MOFs by a direct reaction between thiol-based ligands and corresponding metal salts, postsynthetic modification (PSM) of MOFs is an efficient strategy to introduce thiol functionality. Herein, we have introduced Ag nanoparticles in postsynthetically modified thiol MOFs UiO-66-NH-SH (1) (synthesized by reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and thioglycolic acid) and UiO-66-NH-SH (2) (synthesized by reaction between UiO-66-NH2 and 3-mercaptopropionic acid) to synthesize a series of heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 fixation. Catalysts Cat 1-2 and Cat 3 - 4 were synthesized from UiO-66-NH-SH (1) and UiO-66-NH-SH (2), respectively, by using varying concentrations of silver (AgNO3). Catalyst Ag@UiO-66-NH-SH (1) (Ag = 3.45%; namely Cat 2) shows the highest efficiency for the catalytic conversion of propargylic alcohol and terminal epoxide to the corresponding cyclic carbonates. Finally, a rationalized reaction mechanism is proposed by correlating our results with the current literature. This work presents a viable strategy to utilize the thiol functionality of MOFs (avoiding the complexities associated with synthesizing thiol MOFs directly from thiol ligands) as a platform for introducing catalytically active metal centers and applying them as a heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 fixation reactions.

Increasing the stability of calixarene-capped porous cages through coordination sphere tuning

Chemically and thermally stable permanently porous coordination cages are appealing candidates for separations, catalysis, and as the porous component of new porous liquids. However, many of these applications have not turned to microporous cages as a result of their poor solubility and thermal or hydrolytic stability. Here we describe the design and modular synthesis of iron and cobalt cages where the carboxylate groups of the bridging ligands of well-known calixarene capped coordination cages have been replaced with more basic triazole units. The resultingly higher M-L bond strengths afford highly stable cages that are amenable to modular synthetic approaches and potential functionalization or modification. Owing to the robust nature of these cages, they are highly processable and are isolable in various physical states with tunable porosity depending on the solvation methods used. As the structural integrity of the cages is maintained upon high activation temperatures, apparent losses in porosity can be mediated by resolvation and crystallization or precipitation.

Comparative Analysis of Proton Conductivity in Two Zn-Based MOFs Featuring Sulfate and Sulfonate Functional Groups

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promising potential as proton-conducting materials due to their tunable structures and high porosity. In this study, two novel MOFs had been successfully synthesized, one containing sulfate groups (MOF-1; [Zn4(TIPE)2(SO4)4(H2O)]·5H2O) and the other containing sulfonate groups (MOF-2; [Zn2(TIPE)(5-sip)(NO3)0.66]·0.34NO3·17.5H2O) (TIPE = 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)phenyl)ethene, H35-sip = 5-sulfoisophthalicacid), and the effect of the two groups on the proton conductivity of Zn-based MOFs had been investigated and compared for the first time. The proton conductivity of these MOFs was systematically measured at different temperatures and humidity conditions. Remarkably, the results revealed significant differences in proton conductivity between the two sets of MOFs. At 90 °C and 98% RH, MOF-1 and MOF-2 achieved optimal proton conductivity of 4.48 × 10-3 and 5.69 × 10-2 S·cm-1, respectively. This was due to the structural differences arising from the presence of different functional groups, which subsequently affected the porosity and hydrophilicity, thereby influencing the proton conductivity. Overall, this comparative study revealed the influence of sulfate and sulfonate groups on the proton conductivity of Zn-based MOFs. This research provided a feasible idea for the development of advanced MOF materials with enhanced proton conductivity and opened up new possibilities for their application in proton devices.

Theoretical investigation of hydrogen sulfide capture from methane binary mixture using s-heptazine-based metal-organic framework

CONTEXT

MOFs are promising candidates for the capture of H2S and CO2 from raw biogas. The presence of H2S residues in natural gas pipelines can cause corrosive damage and reduce energy efficiency. H2S capture from biogas presents several challenges due to its high toxicity and its corrosiveness. Microporous MOFs incorporating Lewis basic sites have demonstrated efficient capture of small and polar gas molecules such as CO2 and H2S from gas binary mixtures. In the quest to design and investigate functional materials to support the energy transition, specifically for the purification of RNG gas, we theoretically investigated the potential of s-heptazine-based IRH-1 for H2S capture from CH4 mixtures. IRH-1 exhibited significantly higher adsorption capacities for H2S (2.60 mmol/g) and CO2 (2.68 mmol/g) compared to CH4 (0.98 mmol/g) at 100 kPa and 298 K simulated by GCMC. All computed average energies for H2S were below 20 kJ/mol, indicating an exothermic physisorption behavior within the pores of IRH-1. IAST revealed remarkable H2S selectivity of IRH-1 for CH4/H2S binary mixtures at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of H2S at 100 kPa.

METHODS

GCMC simulations were performed with the BIOVIA Materials Studio 5.0 package using LJ potentials and UFF parameters to investigate the adsorption of pure H2S gas in the IRH-1 material. The IAST method was used to predict the adsorption behavior of H2S in different H2S/CH4 gas mixtures. The IAST calculations were performed using the Python package pyIAST, which allows the prediction of adsorption isotherms for mixed gases based on the adsorption isotherms for pure gases by numerical integration of the Gibbs adsorption approach.

Phosphorus removal from water by the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based adsorbents: A review for structure, mechanism, and current progress

Efficacious phosphate removal is essential for mitigating eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems and complying with increasingly stringent phosphate emission regulations. Chemical adsorption, characterized by simplicity, prominent treatment efficiency, and convenient recovery, is extensively employed for profound phosphorus removal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived metal/carbon composites, surpassing the limitations of separate components, exhibit synergistic effects, rendering them tremendously promising for environmental remediation. This comprehensive review systematically summarizes MOFs-based materials' properties and their structure-property relationships tailored for phosphate adsorption, thereby enhancing specificity towards phosphate. Furthermore, it elucidates the primary mechanisms influencing phosphate adsorption by MOFs-based composites. Additionally, the review introduces strategies for designing and synthesizing efficacious phosphorus capture and regeneration materials. Lastly, it discusses and illuminates future research challenges and prospects in this field. This summary provides novel insights for future research on superlative MOFs-based adsorbents for phosphate removal.

Melt-quenched carboxylate metal-organic framework glasses

Although carboxylate-based frameworks are commonly used architectures in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), liquid/glass MOFs have thus far mainly been obtained from azole- or weakly coordinating ligand-based frameworks. This is because strong coordination bonds of carboxylate ligands to metals block the thermal vitrification pathways of carboxylate-based MOFs. In this study, we present the example of carboxylate-based melt-quenched MOF glasses comprising Mg2+ or Mn2+ with an aliphatic carboxylate ligand, adipate. These MOFs have a low melting temperature (Tm) of 284 °C and 238 °C, respectively, compared to zeolitic-imidazolate framework (ZIF) glasses, and superior mechanical properties in terms of hardness and elastic modulus. The low Tm may be attributed to the flexibility and low symmetry of the aliphatic carboxylate ligand, which raises the entropy of fusion (ΔSfus), and the lack of crystal field stabilization energy on metal ions, reducing enthalpy of fusion (ΔHfus). This research will serve as a cornerstone for the integration of numerous carboxylate-based MOFs into MOF glasses.

Nanoarchitectonics Design Strategy of Metal-Organic Framework and Bio-Metal-Organic Framework Composites for Advanced Wastewater Treatment through Adsorption

Freshwater depletion is an alarm for finding an eco-friendly solution to treat wastewater for drinking and domestic applications. Though several methods like chlorination, filtration, and coagulation-sedimentation are conventionally employed for water treatment, these methods need to be improved as they are not environmentally friendly, rely on chemicals, and are ineffective for all kinds of pollutants. These problems can be addressed by employing an alternative solution that is effective for efficient water treatment and favors commercial aspects. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging porous material, possess high stability, pore size tunability, greater surface area, and active sites. These MOFs can be tailored; thus, they can be customized according to the target pollutant. Hence, MOFs can be employed as adsorbents that effectively target different pollutants. Bio-MOFs are a kind of MOFs that are incorporated with biomolecules, which also possess properties of MOFs and are used as a nontoxic adsorbent. In this review, we elaborate on the interaction between MOFs and target pollutants, the role of linkers in the adsorption of contaminants, tailoring strategy that can be employed on MOFs and Bio-MOFs to target specific pollutants, and we also highlight the effect of environmental matrices on adsorption of pollutants by MOFs.

Using NH2-MIL-125(Ti) for efficient removal of Cr(VI) and RhB from aqueous solutions: Competitive and cooperative behavior in the binary system

The coexistence of inorganic and organic contaminants is a challenge for real-life water treatment applications. Therefore, in this research, we used NH2-MIL-125(Ti) to evaluate the single adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) or Rhodamine B (RhB) in an aqueous solution and further investigate simultaneous adsorption experiments to compare the adsorption behavior changes. The main influencing factors, for example, reaction time, initial concentration, reaction temperature, and pH were studied in detail. In all reaction systems, the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were well illuminated the adsorption progress of Cr(VI) and RhB. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. As compared to the single system, the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) in the binary system gradually decreased as the additive amount of RhB increased, whereas the adsorption capacity of RhB in the binary system was expanded brilliantly. When the binary reaction system contained 100 mg/L Cr(VI), the removal rate of RhB increased to 97.58%. The formation of Cr(VI)-RhB and Cr(III)-RhB complexes was the cause that provided facilitation for the adsorption of RhB. These findings prove that the interactions during the water treatment process between contaminants may obtain additional benefits, contributing to a better adsorption capacity of co-existing contaminant.

Hierarchical-Bioinspired MOFs Enhanced Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Proteins exhibit complex and diverse multi-dimensional structures, along with a wide range of functional groups capable of binding metal ions. By harnessing the unique characteristics of proteins, it is possible to enhance the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and modify their morphology. Here, the utilization of biomineralized bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein as a template for synthesizing Mil-100 with superior microwave absorption (MA) properties is investigated. The multi-dimensional structure and abundant functional groups of biomineralized BSA protein make it an ideal candidate for guiding the synthesis of Mil-100 with intricate network structures. The BSA@Mil-100 synthesized using this method exhibits exceptional uniformity and monodispersity of nanocrystals. The findings suggest that the BSA protein template significantly influences the regulation of nanocrystal and microstructure formation of Mil-100, resulting in a highly uniform and monodisperse structure. Notably, the synthesized 2-BSA@Mil-100 demonstrates a high reflection loss value of -58 dB at 8.85 GHz, along with a maximum effective absorption bandwidth value of 6.79 GHz, spanning from 6.01 to 12.8 GHz. Overall, this study highlights the potential of utilizing BSA protein as a template for MOF synthesis, offering an effective strategy for the design and development of high-performance MA materials.

Recent trends in wastewater treatment by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites: A critical view-point

Respecting the basic need of clean and safe water on earth for every individual, it is necessary to take auspicious steps for waste-water treatment. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as promising material because of their intrinsic features including the porosity and high surface area. Further, structural tunability of MOFs by following the principles of reticular chemistry, the MOFs can be functionalized for the high adsorption performance as well as adsorptive removal of target materials. However, there are still some major concerns associated with MOFs limiting their commercialization as promising adsorbents for waste-water treatment. The cost, toxicity and regenerability are the major issues to be addressed for MOFs to get insightful results. In this article, we have concise the current strategies to enhance the adsorption capacity of MOFs during the water-treatment for the removal of toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals. Further, we have also discussed the role of metallic nodes, linkers and associated functional groups for effective removal of toxic water pollutants. In addition to conformist overview, we have critically analyzed the MOFs as adsorbents in terms of toxicity, cost and regenerability. These factors are utmost important to address before commercialization of MOFs as adsorbents for water-treatment. Finally, some future perspectives are discussed to give directions for potential research.

Water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): rational construction and carbon dioxide capture

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be a promising porous material due to their excellent porosity and chemical tailorability. However, due to the relatively weak strength of coordination bonds, the stability (e.g., water stability) of MOFs is usually poor, which severely inhibits their practical applications. To prepare water-stable MOFs, several important strategies such as increasing the bonding strength of building units and introducing hydrophobic units have been proposed, and many MOFs with excellent water stability have been prepared. Carbon dioxide not only causes a range of climate and health problems but also is a by-product of some important chemicals (e.g., natural gas). Due to their excellent adsorption performances, MOFs are considered as a promising adsorbent that can capture carbon dioxide efficiently and energetically, and many water-stable MOFs have been used to capture carbon dioxide in various scenarios, including flue gas decarbonization, direct air capture, and purified crude natural gas. In this review, we first introduce the design and synthesis of water-stable MOFs and then describe their applications in carbon dioxide capture, and finally provide some personal comments on the challenges facing these areas.

Two highly stable isoreticular M8-pyrazolate (M = Co, Ni) metal-organic frameworks for CO2 conversion

Two isoreticular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed from M8(OH)4(H2O)2(pyz)12 (M = Co, Ni; pyz = pyrazolate) secondary building units (SBUs) and Ni(salen)-derived metalloligands were synthesized. The two MOFs were found to be highly stable in a wide pH and temperature range. Together with the tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) co-catalyst, they catalysed the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides with near-quantitative yields and easy recyclability for at least 11 cycles.

A novel threefold interpenetrated zirconium metal-organic framework exhibiting separation ability for strong acids

We report on the synthesis and selective adsorption property of a novel threefold interpenetrated Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF), [Zr12O8(OH)8(HCOO)15(BPT)3] (BPT3- = [1,1'-biphenyl]-3,4',5-tricarboxylate) (abbreviated as Zr-BPT). This MOF shows a high tolerance to acidic conditions and has permanent pores, the size of which (approx. <5.6 Å) is the smallest ever reported among porous Zr-based MOFs with high acid tolerance. Zr-BPT selectively adsorbs aryl acids due to its strong affinity for them and exhibits separation ability, even between strong acid molecules, such as sulfonic and phosphonic acids. This is the first demonstration of a MOF exhibiting selective adsorption and separation ability for strong acids.

Advances in metal-organic frameworks for water remediation applications

Rapid industrialization and agricultural development have resulted in the accumulation of a variety of harmful contaminants in water resources. Thus, various approaches such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and methods for sensing water contaminants have been developed to solve the problem of water pollution. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination networks comprising organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials having organic ligands attached to inorganic metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds. MOFs represent an emerging class of materials for application in water remediation owing to their versatile structural and chemical characteristics, such as well-ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and tunable sites. The present review is focused on recent advances in various MOFs for application in water remediation via the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water contaminants. The sensing of water pollutants using MOFs via different approaches, such as luminescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques, is also discussed. The high porosity and chemical tunability of MOFs are the main driving forces for their widespread applications, which have huge potential for their commercial use.

Physiochemical characterization of metal organic framework materials: A mini review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials offering exceptional performance across a myriad of applications, attributable to their remarkable physicochemical properties such as regular porosity, crystalline structure, and tailored functional groups. Despite their potential, there is a lack of dedicated reviews that focus on key physicochemical characterizations of MOFs for the beginners and new researchers in the field. This review is written based on our expertise in the synthesis and characterization of MOFs, specifically to provide a right direction for the researcher who is a beginner in this area. In this way, experimental errors can be reduced, and wastage of time and chemicals can be avoided when new researchers conduct a study. In this article, this topic is critically analyzed, and findings and conclusions are presented. We reviewed three well-known XRD techniques, including PXRD, single crystal XRD, and SAXS, which were used for XRD analysis depending on the crystal size and the quality of crystal morphology. The TGA profile was an effective factor for evaluating the quality of the activation process and for ensuring the successful investigation for other characterizations. The BET and pore size were significantly affected by the activation process and selective benzene chain cross-linkers. FTIR is a prominent method that is used to investigate the functional groups on pore surfaces, and this method is successfully used to evaluate the activation process, characterize functionalized MOFs, and estimate their applications. The most significant methods of characterization include the X-ray diffraction, which is utilized for structural identification, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which is used for exploring thermal decomposition. It is important to note that the thermal stability of MOFs is influenced by two main factors: the metal-ligand interaction and the type of functional groups attached to the organic ligand. The textural properties of the MOFs, on the other hand, can be scrutinized through nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms experiments at 77 K. However, for smaller pore size, the Argon adsorption-desorption isotherm at 87.3 K is preferred. Furthermore, the CO2 adsorption isotherm at 273 K can be used to measure ultra-micropore sizes and sizes lower than these, which cannot be measured by using the N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm at 77 K. The highest BET was observed in high-valence MOFs that are constructed based on the metal-oxo cluster, which has an excellent ability to control their textural properties. It was found that the synthesis procedure (including the choice of solvent, cross-linker, secondary metal, surface functional groups, and temperature), activation method, and pressure significantly impact the surface area of the MOF and, by extension, its structural integrity. Additionally, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy plays a crucial role in identifying active MOF functional groups. Understanding these physicochemical properties and utilizing relevant characterization techniques will enable more precise MOF selection for specific applications.

Uncoordinated amino groups of MIL-101 anchoring cobalt porphyrins for highly selective CO2 electroreduction

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) presents a sustainable route to address energy crisis and environmental issues, where the rational design of catalysts remains crucial. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high CO2 capture capacities have immense potential as CO2RR electrocatalysts but suffer from poor activity. Herein we report a redox-active cobalt protoporphyrin grafted MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 for CO2 electroreduction. Material characterizations reveal that porphyrin molecules are covalently attached to uncoordinated amino groups of the parent MOF without compromising its well-defined porous structure. Furthermore, in situ spectroscopic techniques suggest inherited CO2 concentrate ability and more abundant adsorbed carbonate species on the modified MOF. As a result, a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) up to 97.1% and a turnover frequency of 0.63 s-1 are achieved, together with FECO above 90% within a wide potential window of 300 mV. This work sheds new light on the coupling of MOFs with molecular catalysts to enhance catalytic performances.

Enhancing supercapacitor performance of Ni-Co-Mn metal-organic frameworks by compositing it with polyaniline and reduced graphene oxide

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most sought-after materials in the domain of supercapacitors and can be tailored to accommodate diverse compositions, making them amenable to facile functionalization. However, their intrinsic specific capacitance as well as energy density is minimal, which hinders their usage for advanced energy storage applications. Therefore, herein, we have prepared six electrodes, i.e., Ni-Co-Mn MOFs, polyaniline (PANI), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) along with their novel nanocomposites, i.e., C1, C2, and C3, comprising MOFs : PANI : rGO in a mass ratio of 100 : 1 : 0.5, 100 : 1 : 1, and 100 : 1 : 10, respectively. The polyaniline conducting polymer and rGO enabled efficient electron transport, enhanced charge storage processes, substantial surface area facilitating higher loading of active materials, promoting electrochemical reactions, and ultimately enhanced nanocomposite system performance. As a result, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques confirmed the successful synthesis and revealed distinct morphological features of the materials. Following electrochemical testing, it was observed that composition C2 exhibited the highest performance, demonstrating a groundbreaking specific capacitance of 1007 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. The device showed a good energy density of 25.11 W h kg-1 and a power density of 860 W kg-1. Remarkably, the device demonstrated a capacity retention of 115% after 1500 cycles, which is a clear indication of the wettability factor, according to the literature. The power law indicated b-values in a range of 0.58-0.64, verifying the hybrid-type behavior of supercapacitors.

Stability of Zr-Based UiO-66 Metal-Organic Frameworks in Basic Solutions

Although Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit robust chemical and physical stability in the presence of moisture and acidic conditions, their susceptibility to nucleophilic attacks from bases poses a critical challenge to their overall stability. Herein, we systematically investigate the stability of Zr-based UiO-66 (UiO = University of Oslo) MOFs in basic solutions. The impact of 11 standard bases, including inorganic salts and organic bases, on the stability of these MOFs is examined. The destruction of the framework is confirmed through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns, and the monitored dissolution of ligands from the framework is assessed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Our key findings reveal a direct correlation between the strength and concentration of the base and the destruction of the MOFs. The summarized data provide valuable insights that can guide the practical application of Zr-based UiO-66 MOFs under basic conditions, offering essential information for their optimal utilization in various settings.

Solvent-Directed Construction of a Nanoporous Metal-Organic Framework with Potential in Selective Adsorption and Separation of Gas Mixtures Studied by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Simulations

In this report, a microporous metal-organic framework of [Ca(TDC)(DMA)]n (1) and a two-dimensional coordination polymer of [Ca(TDC)(DMF)2 ]n (2), (TDC2- =Thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylate, DMA=N, N'-dimethylacetamide and DMF=N, N'-dimethylformamide) based on Ca(II) were designed by the effect of solvent, and X-ray analysis was performed for the single crystals of 1 and 2. Then, compound 1 was synthesized in three different methods and identified with a set of analyses. Compared to other adsorbents, MOFs are widely used in the field of adsorption and separation of various gases due to a series of distinctive features such as diverse and adjustable structures pores with different dimensions, high porosity and surface area with regular distribution of active sites. Therefore, the ability of 1 to uptake single gases (CH4 , CO2 , C2 H2 , H2, and N2 ) and separation of several binary mixtures of gases (CO2 /CH4 , CO2 /N2 , CO2 /H2 and CO2 /C2 H2 ), were investigated using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Volumetric and gravimetric adsorption isotherms in various operating conditions, the isosteric heat of adsorption (qst ), the chemical potential for each thermodynamic state, and snapshots during the simulation process were reported in all cases. The results obtained from the adsorption simulation indicate that compound 1 has a high capacity for uptake of H2 (16 mmol g-1 ) and N2 (12.5 mmol g-1 ), CO2 (6.6 mmol g-1 ), C2 H2 (5 mmol g-1 ) and CH4 (1.5 mmol g-1 ) gases at 1 bar. It also performs well in separating CO2 in binary mixtures, which can be attributed to the presence of open metal sites in nodes of 1 and their electrostatic tendency to interact with CO2 containing the higher quadrupole dipole moment compared to other components of the mixture.

MOF-GRU: A MOFid-Aided Deep Learning Model for Predicting the Gas Separation Performance of Metal-Organic Frameworks

The remarkable versatility of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) stems from their rich chemical information, leading to numerous successful applications. However, identifying optimal MOFs for specific tasks necessitates a thorough assessment of their chemical attributes. Conventional machine learning approaches for MOF prediction have relied on intricate chemical and structural details, hampering rapid evaluations. Drawing inspiration from recent advancements exemplified by Snurr et al., wherein a text string was used to represent a MOF (MOFid), we introduce a MOFid-aided deep learning model, named the MOF-GRU model. This model, founded on natural language processing principles and utilizing the gated recurrent unit architecture, leverages the serialized text string representation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to forecast gas separation performance. Through a focused study on CH4/N2 separation, we substantiate the efficacy of this approach. Comparative assessments against traditional machine learning techniques underscore our model's superior predictive accuracy and its capacity to handle extensive data sets adeptly. The MOF-GRU model remarkably uncovers latent structure-performance relationships with only MOF sequences, obviating the necessity for intricate three-dimensional (3D) structural information. Overall, this model's judicious design empowers efficient data utilization, thereby hastening the discovery of high-performance materials tailored for gas separation applications.

In-silico study of drug delivery to atherosclerosis in the human carotid artery using metal-organic frameworks based on adhesion of nanocarriers

This study investigates nanocarriers (NCs) for drug delivery targeting carotid artery atherosclerosis. This targeted drug delivery mechanism is based on ligand-receptor bindings facilitated by coating NCs with P-selectin aptamers, which exhibit high affinities for P-selectin plaque receptors. Recognizing the significant advantages of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), such as their high drug-loading percentages, we chose them as nanocarriers for this research. Our evaluation considers critical factors: NC surface density (the number of attached nanocarriers per unit of plaque area), toxicity (percentage of NCs missing the target), and efficient drug transfer to plaque tissue. Employing molecular dynamics (MD) for drug loading calculations via van der Waals interactions and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for toxicity, surface density, and drug transfer assessments, we achieve a comprehensive analysis. A cardiac cycle-based metric guides optimal MOF release conditions, establishing an ideal dosage of 600 NCs per cycle. MOF-801 exhibits outstanding drug delivery performance, particularly in plaque targeting. While a magnetic field enhances NC adhesion, its impact on drug transfer is limited, emphasizing the need for further optimization in magnetic targeting for NC-based therapies. This study provides crucial insights into NC drug delivery performance in carotid artery atherosclerosis, advancing the field of targeted drug delivery for atherosclerosis treatment.

Thiol and thioether-based metal-organic frameworks: synthesis, structure, and multifaceted applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are unique hybrid porous materials formed by combining metal ions or clusters with organic ligands. Thiol and thioether-based MOFs belong to a specific category of MOFs where one or many thiols or thioether groups are present in organic linkers. Depending on the linkers, thiol-thioether MOFs can be divided into three categories: (i) MOFs where both thiol or thioether groups are part of the carboxylic acid ligands, (ii) MOFs where only thiol or thioether groups are present in the organic linker, and (iii) MOFs where both thiol or thioether groups are part of azolate-containing linkers. MOFs containing thiol-thioether-based acid ligands are synthesized through two primary approaches; one is by utilizing thiol and thioether-based carboxylic acid ligands where the bonding pattern of ligands with metal ions plays a vital role in MOF formation (HSAB principle). MOFs synthesized by this approach can be structurally differentiated into two categories: structures without common structural motifs and structures with common structural motifs (related to UiO-66, UiO-67, UiO-68, MIL-53, NU-1100, etc.). The second approach to synthesize thiol and thioether-based MOFs is indirect methods, where thiol or thioether functionality is introduced in MOFs by techniques like post-synthetic modifications (PSM), post-synthetic exchange (PSE) and by forming composite materials. Generally, MOFs containing only thiol-thioether-based ligands are synthesized by interfacial assisted synthesis, forming two-dimensional sheet frameworks, and show significantly high conductivity. A limited study has been done on MOFs containing thiol-thioether-based azolate ligands where both nitrogen- and sulfur-containing functionality are present in the MOF frameworks. These materials exhibit intriguing properties stemming from the interplay between metal centres, organic ligands, and sulfur functionality. As a result, they offer great potential for multifaceted applications, ranging from catalysis, sensing, and conductivity, to adsorption. This perspective is organised through an introduction, schematic representations, and tabular data of the reported thiol and thioether MOFs and concluded with future directions.

Batch Experimental Studies and Statistical Modeling for the Effective Removal of Tetracycline from Wastewater Using Bimetallic Zn-Cu-Metal-Organic Framework@Hydrogel Composite Beads

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is on an upsurge as more and more broad-spectrum antibiotics are being used haphazardly, resulting in imbalances in the ecosystem and disrupting common/systematic clinical protocols. To combat this issue, metal-organic framework embedded zinc-copper-benzenedicarboxylate@calcium alginate composite beads (Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs) were synthesized and utilized for the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) from water. The surface morphology, presence of functional groups, surface area, and thermal stability of Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs were evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Batch adsorption experiments were also carried out to optimize the adsorption performance of Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs for TC by adjusting the key parameters, including pH of the solution, contact time, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and initial concentration of TC. From the RSM model, 96.8% removal of TC takes place under the optimum conditions (pH = 7.3, mass = 17.2 mg, concentration = 21.3 ppm, time = 3.4 h, and temperature = 31.8 °C), which aligns closely with the experimental batch study, where the addition of 20 mg of adsorbent to a 20 mL TC solution (20 mg/L) at a pH of 7 and a temperature of 27 °C yielded an impressive TC removal efficiency of 96.55% within 180 min. Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs possess homogeneous adsorption surfaces, and TC is adsorbed via monolayer chemisorption, according to the results derived from the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process is both endothermic and spontaneous. In their entirety, the synthesized Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs exhibit certain operational advantages, such as simple separation, satisfactory adsorption performance, and decent recyclability, indicating their viability for industrial application of elimination of TC residues from aquatic environments.

Synergistic Interplay of Dual-Active-Sites on Metallic Ni-MOFs Loaded with Pt for Thermal-Photocatalytic Conversion of Atmospheric CO2 under Infrared Light Irradiation

Infrared light driven photocatalytic reduction of atmospheric CO2 is challenging due to the ultralow concentration of CO2 (0.04 %) and the low energy of infrared light. Herein, we develop a metallic nickel-based metal-organic framework loaded with Pt (Pt/Ni-MOF), which shows excellent activity for thermal-photocatalytic conversion of atmospheric CO2 with H2 even under infrared light irradiation. The open Ni sites are beneficial to capture and activate atmospheric CO2 , while the photogenerated electrons dominate H2 dissociation on the Pt sites. Simultaneously, thermal energy results in spilling of the dissociated H2 to Ni sites, where the adsorbed CO2 is thermally reduced to CO and CH4 . The synergistic interplay of dual-active-sites renders Pt/Ni-MOF a record efficiency of 9.57 % at 940 nm for converting atmospheric CO2 , enables the procurement of CO2 to be independent of the emission sources, and improves the energy efficiency for trace CO2 conversion by eliminating the capture media regeneration and molecular CO2 release.

Enhanced Gas Adsorption in HKUST-1@Chitosan Aerogels, Cryogels, and Xerogels: An Evaluation Study

This study investigates the use of chitosan hydrogel microspheres as a template for growing an extended network of MOF-type HKUST-1. Different drying methods (supercritical CO2, freeze-drying, and vacuum drying) were used to generate three-dimensional polysaccharide nanofibrils embedding MOF nanoclusters. The resulting HKUST-1@Chitosan beads exhibit uniform and stable loadings of HKUST-1 and were used for the adsorption of CO2, CH4, Xe, and Kr. The maximum adsorption capacity of CO2 was found to be 1.98 mmol·g-1 at 298 K and 1 bar, which is significantly higher than those of most MOF-based composite materials. Based on Henry's constants, thus-prepared HKUST-1@CS beads also exhibit fair selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and Xe over Kr, making them promising candidates for capture and separation applications.

Environmental implications of metal-organic frameworks and MXenes in biomedical applications: a perspective

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MXenes have demonstrated immense potential for biomedical applications, offering a plethora of advantages. MXenes, in particular, exhibit robust mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, large surface areas, significant light absorption potential, and tunable surface terminations, among other remarkable characteristics. Meanwhile, MOFs possess high porosity and large surface area, making them ideal for protecting active biomolecules and serving as carriers for drug delivery, hence their extensive study in the field of biomedicine. However, akin to other (nano)materials, concerns regarding their environmental implications persist. The number of studies investigating the toxicity and biocompatibility of MXenes and MOFs is growing, albeit further systematic research is needed to thoroughly understand their biosafety issues and biological effects prior to clinical trials. The synthesis of MXenes often involves the use of strong acids and high temperatures, which, if not properly managed, can have adverse effects on the environment. Efforts should be made to minimize the release of harmful byproducts and ensure proper waste management during the production process. In addition, it is crucial to assess the potential release of MXenes into the environment during their use in biomedical applications. For the biomedical applications of MOFs, several challenges exist. These include high fabrication costs, poor selectivity, low capacity, the quest for stable and water-resistant MOFs, as well as difficulties in recycling/regeneration and maintaining chemical/thermal/mechanical stability. Thus, careful consideration of the biosafety issues associated with their fabrication and utilization is vital. In addition to the synthesis and manufacturing processes, the ultimate utilization and fate of MOFs and MXenes in biomedical applications must be taken into account. While numerous reviews have been published regarding the biomedical applications of MOFs and MXenes, this perspective aims to shed light on the key environmental implications and biosafety issues, urging researchers to conduct further research in this field. Thus, the crucial aspects of the environmental implications and biosafety of MOFs and MXenes in biomedicine are thoroughly discussed, focusing on the main challenges and outlining future directions.

A review of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials as an effective photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutants

Water plays a vital role in all aspects of life. Recently, water pollution has increased exponentially due to various organic and inorganic pollutants. Organic pollutants are hard to degrade; therefore, cost-effective and sustainable approaches are needed to degrade these pollutants. Organic dyes are the major source of organic pollutants from coloring industries. The photoactive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer an ultimate strategy for constructing photocatalysts to degrade pollutants present in wastewater. Therefore, tuning the metal ions/clusters and organic ligands for the better photocatalytic activity of MOFs is a tremendous approach for wastewater treatment. This review comprehensively reports various MOFs and their composites, especially POM-based MOF composites, for the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in the aqueous phase. A brief discussion on various theoretical aspects such as density functional theory (DFT) and machine learning (ML) related to MOF and MOF composite-based photocatalysts has been presented. Thus, this article may eventually pave the way for applying different structural features to modulate novel porous materials for enhanced photodegradation properties toward organic pollutants.

Nanoporous {Co3}-Organic framework for efficiently seperating gases and catalyzing cycloaddition of epoxides with CO2 and Knoevenagel condensation

Enhancing the catalysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by regulating inherent Lewis acid-base sites to realize the efficient seperation and chemical fixation of inert carbon dioxide (CO2) is crucial but challenging. Herein, the solvothermal self-assembly of Co2+, 5'-(4-carboxy-2-nitrophenyl)-2,2',2'',4',6'-pentanitro-[1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-4,4''-dicarboxylic acid (H3TNBTB) and 4'-phenyl-4,2':6',4''-terpyridine (PTP) generated a highly robust cobalt-organic framework of {[Co3(TNBTB)2(PTP)]·7DMF·6H2O}n (NUC-82). In NUC-82, the tri-core clusters of {Co3} with linear shape are bridged by TNBTB3- to form two-dimensional structure in ac plane, which is further linked by PTP to generate a three-dimensional framework with two kinds of solvent-accessible channels: rhombic-like (ca. 11.57 × 10.76 Å) along a axis and rectangular-like (ca. 7.32 × 11.56 Å) along b axis. Furthermore, it is worth emphasizing that the confined pore environments are characterized by plentiful Lewis acid-base sites of tricobalt clusters, grafted nitro groups and free pyridinyl, high specific surface area and solvent-free nano-caged windows. Activated NUC-82a owns the ultra-high ethylene (C2H2) separation performance over the mixture of C2H2/CH4 and CO2/CH4 with the selectivity of 223.1 and 44.7. Thanks to the great Lewis-acid sites as well as the large pore volume, activated NUC-82a displays the high catalytic performace on the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides under wield condtions such as amibient pressure. Furthermore, because of the rich Lewis base sites, NUC-82a can efficiently catalyze Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes and malononitrile. In the above organic reactions, NUC-82a not only shows the high catalytic activity, but also exhibits the high selectivity, satifactory recyclability and easy-to-separate heterogeneity, confirming that NUC-82a is a promising catalyst. Hence, this work provides in-depth insight into the construction of multifunctional MOFs by modifying the traditional ligands with as many Lewis acid-base active sites as possible.

Immobilization of Protease K with ZIF-8 for Enhanced Stability in Polylactic Acid Melt Processing and Catalytic Degradation

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable alternative to petroleum-based polymers for improving environmental sustainability of our society. However, the limited degradation rate and environmental conditions for PLA-based products remain significant challenges for their broader use in various applications. While Proteinase K (Pro K) from Tritirachium album has been demonstrated to efficiently degrade PLA, its autocatalytic degradation function in composite films is underexplored. Here, this work reports a strategy that encapsulates Pro K with zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) in situ, combining a PLA matrix to prepare Pro K@ZIF-8/PLA films through solvent casting. The method is scalable and commercially viable, and the pH and thermal stability of the Pro K enzyme are significantly enhanced after immobilization. The enzyme can retain 61.8% of its initial activity after annealing at 160 °C for 10 min, allowing for its use in the melt processing of filler-containing PLA films. As a result, Pro K@ZIF-8/PLA films in buffer solutions exhibit stable degradation rates, which can be extended to PLA decomposition in acidic environments. Moreover, the enzyme in Pro K@ZIF-8/PLA films prepared by thermoforming remains active sufficiently to degrade PLA with a weight loss of up to 15% in 2 weeks. These results further indicate that our strategy can be broadly applicable for melt processing and controlled degradation of PLA materials with immobilized enzymes, allowing for its transformative impact for promoting environmental sustainability.

Reticular framework materials for photocatalytic organic reactions

Photocatalytic organic reactions, harvesting solar energy to produce high value-added organic chemicals, have attracted increasing attention as a sustainable approach to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. Reticular framework materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are widely considered as promising candidates for photocatalysis owing to their high crystallinity, tailorable pore environment and extensive structural diversity. Although the design and synthesis of MOFs and COFs have been intensively developed in the last 20 years, their applications in photocatalytic organic transformations are still in the preliminary stage, making their systematic summary necessary. Thus, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and useful guidelines for the exploration of suitable MOF and COF photocatalysts towards appropriate photocatalytic organic reactions. The commonly used reactions are categorized to facilitate the identification of suitable reaction types. From a practical viewpoint, the fundamentals of experimental design, including active species, performance evaluation and external reaction conditions, are discussed in detail for easy experimentation. Furthermore, the latest advances in photocatalytic organic reactions of MOFs and COFs, including their composites, are comprehensively summarized according to the actual active sites, together with the discussion of their structure-property relationship. We believe that this study will be helpful for researchers to design novel reticular framework photocatalysts for various organic synthetic applications.

Utilization of 2D materials in aqueous zinc ion batteries for safe energy storage devices

Aqueous rechargeable battery has been an intense topic of research recently due to the significant safety issues of conventional Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Amongst the various candidates of aqueous batteries, aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) hold great promise as a next generation safe energy storage device due to its low cost, abundance in nature, low toxicity, environmental friendliness, low redox potential, and high theoretical capacity. Yet, the promise has not been realized due to their limitations, such as lower capacity compared to traditional LIB, dendrite growth, detrimental degradation of electrode materials structure as ions intercalate/de-intercalate, and gas evolution/corrosion at the electrodes, which remains a significant challenge. To address the challenges, various 2D materials with different physiochemical characteristics have been utilized. This review explores fundamental physiochemical characteristics of widely used 2D materials in AZIBs, including graphene, MoS2, MXenes, 2D metal organic framework, 2D covalent organic framework, and 2D transition metal oxides, and how their characteristics have been utilized or modified to address the challenges in AZIBs. The review also provides insights and perspectives on how 2D materials can help to realize the full potential of AZIBs for next-generation safe and reliable energy storage devices.

Water sensitivity of heteroepitaxial Cu-MOF films: dissolution and re-crystallization of 3D-oriented MOF superstructures

3D-oriented metal-organic framework (MOF) films and patterns have recently emerged as promising platforms for sensing and photonic applications. These oriented polycrystalline materials are typically prepared by heteroepitaxial growth from aligned inorganic nanostructures and display anisotropic functional properties, such as guest molecule alignment and polarized fluorescence. However, to identify suitable conditions for the integration of these 3D-oriented MOF superstructures into functional devices, the effect of water (gaseous and liquid) on different frameworks should be determined. We note that the hydrolytic stability of these heteroepitaxially grown MOF films is currently unexplored. In this work, we present an in-depth analysis of the structural evolution of aligned 2D and 3D Cu-based MOFs grown from Cu(OH)2 coatings. Specifically, 3D-oriented Cu2L2 and Cu2L2DABCO films (L = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, BDC; biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylate, BPDC; DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) were exposed to 50% relative humidity (RH), 80% RH and liquid water. The combined use of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy shows that the sensitivity towards humid environments critically depends on the presence of the DABCO pillar ligand. While oriented films of 2D MOF layers stay intact upon exposure to all levels of humidity, hydrolysis of Cu2L2DABCO is observed. In addition, we report that in environments with high water content, 3D-oriented Cu2(BDC)2DABCO recrystallizes as 3D-oriented Cu2(BDC)2. The heteroepitaxial MOF-to-MOF transformation mechanism was studied with in situ synchrotron experiments, time-resolved AFM measurements, and electron diffraction. These findings provide valuable information on the stability of oriented MOF films for their application in functional devices and highlight the potential for the fabrication of 3D-oriented superstructures via MOF-to-MOF transformations.

Exploring the potential of iron-based metal-organic frameworks as peroxidase nanozymes for glucose detection with various secondary building units

Finding materials in biosensing that balance enzyme-like reactivity, stability, and affordability is essential for the future. Because of their unique peroxidase properties, including variable pore size, surface area, and Lewis acid active sites, iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have evolved as viable possibilities. In this study, we constructed a Fe-MOF and tested its peroxidase-like activity and responsiveness toward H2O2 colorimetric techniques. Using encapsulation, we incorporated glucose oxidase into the ZIF-90 PVP MOF and conducted a sequential reaction with the Fe-MOF to detect glucose. The results showed better peroxidase catalytic activity of the MIL-88B(Fe) (1,4-NDC) MOF and similar secondary building unit (SBU) Fe-MOFs were studied in other peroxidase nanozyme studies. When combined with an enzyme-encapsulating ZIF-90 PVP MOF, they could be sequentially employed for glucose detection purposes. This study highlights the potential of nanozymes as an alternative to natural enzymes, with promising applications in biosensing and beyond.

Multi-Modular Design of Stable Pore-Space-Partitioned Metal-Organic Frameworks for Gas Separation Applications

Pore space partition (PSP) is an effective materials design method for developing high-performance small-pore materials for storage and separation of gas molecules. The continued success of PSP depends on broad availability and judicious choice of pore-partition ligands and better understanding of each structural module on stability and sorption properties. Here, by using substructural bioisosteric strategy (sub-BIS), a dramatic expansion of pore-partitioned materials is targeted by using ditopic dipyridyl ligands with non-aromatic cores or extenders, as well as by expanding heterometallic clusters to uncommon nickel-vanadium and nickel-indium clusters rarely known before in porous materials. The dual-module iterative refinement of pore-partition ligands and trimers leads to remarkable enhancement of chemical stability and porosity. Here a family of 23 pore-partitioned materials synthesized from five pore-partition ligands and seven types of trimeric clusters is reported. New materials with such compositionally and structurally diverse framework modules reveal key factors that dictate stability, porosity, and gas separation properties. Among these, materials based on heterometallic vanadium-nickel trimeric clusters give rise to the highest long-term hydrolytic stability and remarkable uptake capacity for CO2 , C2 H2 /C2 H4 /C2 H6 , and C3 H6 /C3 H8 hydrocarbon gases. The breakthrough experiment shows the potential application of new materials for separating gas mixtures such as C2 H2 /CO2 .

Progress on Single-Atom Photocatalysts for H2 Generation: Material Design, Catalytic Mechanism, and Perspectives

Solar energy utilization is of great significance to current challenges of the energy crisis and environmental pollution, which benefit the development of the global community to achieve carbon neutrality goals. Hydrogen energy is also treated as a good candidate for future energy supply since its combustion not only supplies high-density energy but also shows no pollution gas. In particular, photocatalytic water splitting has attracted increasing research as a promising method for H2 production. Recently, single-atom (SA) photocatalysts have been proposed as a potential solution to improve catalytic efficiency and lower the costs of photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation. Owing to the maximized atom utilization rate, abundant surface active sites, and tunable coordination environment, SA photocatalysts have achieved significant progress. This review reviews developments of advanced SA photocatalysts for H2 generation regarding the different support materials. The recent progress of titanium dioxide, metal-organic frameworks, two-dimensional carbon materials, and red phosphorus supported SA photocatalysts are carefully discussed. In particular, the material designs, reaction mechanisms, modulation strategies, and perspectives are highlighted for realizing improved solar-to-energy efficiency and H2 generation rate. This work will supply significant references for future design and synthesis of advanced SA photocatalysts.

A Water-Stable Cationic SIFSIX MOF for Luminescent Probing of Cr2 O7 2- via Single-Crystal to Single-Crystal Transformation

The sensing and monitoring of toxic oxo-anion contaminants in water are of significant importance to biological and environmental systems. A rare hydro-stable SIFSIX metal-organic framework, SiF6 @MOF-1, {[Cu(L)2 (H2 O)2 ]·(SiF6 )(H2 O)}n , with exchangeable SiF6 2- anion in its pore is strategically designed and synthesized, exhibiting selective detection of toxic Cr2 O7 2- oxo-anion in an aqueous medium having high sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability through fluorescence quenching phenomena. More importantly, the recognition and ion exchange mechanism is unveiled through the rarely explored single-crystal-to-single crystal (SC-SC) fashion with well-resolved structures. A thorough SC-SC study with interfering anions (Cl- , F- , I- , NO3 - , HCO3 - , SO4 2- , SCN- , IO3 - ) revealed no such transformations to take place, as per line with quenching studies. Density functional theory calculations revealed that despite a lesser binding affinity, Cr2 O7 2- shows strong orbital mixing and large driving forces for electron transfer than SiF6 2- , and thus enlightens the fluorescence quenching mechanism. This work inaugurates the usage of a SIFSIX MOF toward sensing application domain under aqueous medium where hydrolytic stability is a prime concern for their plausible implementation as sensor materials.

Three in One: Superoleophilic, Chemically and Mechanically Resistant ZIF-7 and ZIF-11 Percolation Networks for Selective Permeation of Oils and Chlorinated Solvents

Imbuing superwetting functions to organic-inorganic hybrid networks displaying chemical resistance, self-cleaning ability, and selective permeation of liquids has received increasing attention in recent years. Here we report superhydrophobic ZIF-7 and ZIF-11 on multilayer fluorinated graphene (FG) nanosheets with long-lasting water-repellent features. By exploring the solution processing of these chemically resistant dispersions, superoleophilic FG-ZIF-7 stainless steel mesh (FG-ZIF-7-SSM) and FG-ZIF-11 over cotton cloth (FG-ZIF-11-CC) possessing superior adhesion were fabricated. These permselective oil-liking prototypes were explored toward mesitylene and crude oil pickup from chemically harsh marine conditions such as seawater, acidic water, and alkaline water, with a separation efficiency of 96-94% up to 10 cycles. Furthermore, using an FG-ZIF-11-CC-wrapped glass pipet, upward diffusion of chloroform from sea, acidic, and alkaline water in 45 s was demonstrated with a separation efficacy of 94% up to 20 cycles. In addition to the chemical resistance and reusability, the mechanical stability of FG-ZIF-7-SSM and FG-ZIF-11-CC was investigated through folding, tape peeling, and dragging through sandpaper up to 250 cycles, showing no signs of changes in the hydrophobic responses. This research sheds light on the application of physiochemically resistant percolation coatings based on fluorinated graphene multilayers supporting ZIF-7 and ZIF-11 toward oil/water separation.

Integration of Triphenylene-Based Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks into Carbon Nanotube Electrodes for Boosting Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

The rational design and preparation of conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are alluring and challenging pathways to develop active catalysts toward electrocatalytic glucose oxidation. The hybridization of conductive MOFs with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the form of a composite can greatly improve the electrocatalytic performance. Herein, a facile one-step synthetic strategy is utilized to fabricate a Ni3(HHTP)2/CNT (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) composite for nonenzymatic detection of glucose in an alkaline solution. The Ni3(HHTP)2/CNT composite, as an electrochemical glucose sensor material, exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation with a wide detection range of up to 3.9 mM, a low detection limit of 4.1 μM (signal/noise = 3), a fast amperometric response time of <2 s, and a high sensitivity of 4774 μA mM-1 cm-2, surpassing the performance of some recently reported nonenzymatic transition-metal-based glucose sensors. In addition, the composite sensor also shows outstanding selectivity, robust long-term electrochemical stability, favorable anti-interference properties, and good reproducibility. This work displays the effectiveness of enhancing the electrocatalytic performance toward glucose detection by combing conductive MOFs with CNTs, thereby opening up an applicable and encouraging approach for the design of advanced nonenzymatic glucose sensors.

Ligand-Mediated Regulation of the Chemical/Thermal Stability and Catalytic Performance of Isostructural Cobalt(II) Coordination Polymers

Regulating the chemical/thermal stability and catalytic activity of coordination polymers (CPs) to achieve high catalytic performance is topical and challenging. The CPs are competent in promoting oxidative cross-coupling, yet they have not received substantial attention. Here, the ligand effect of the secondary ligand of CPs for oxidative cross-coupling reactions was investigated. Specifically, four new isostructural CPs [Co(Fbtx)1.5(4-R-1,2-BDC)]n (denoted as Co-CP-R, Fbtx = 1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazole-1-ylmethyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene, 4-R-1,2-BDC = 4-R-1,2-benzenedicarboxylate, R = F, Cl, Br, CF3) were prepared. It was found that in the reactions of oxidative amination of benzoxazoles with secondary amines and the oxidative coupling of styrenes with benzaldehydes, both the chemical and thermal stabilities of the four Co-CPs with the R group followed the trend of -CF3 > -Br > -Cl > -F. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the difference in reactivity may be ascribed to the effect of substituent groups on the electron transition energy of the cobalt(II) center of these Co-CPs. These findings highlight the secondary ligand effect in regulating the stability and catalytic performance of coordination networks.

Co-containing metal-organic framework for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors with functionalized reduced graphene oxide

Nowadays, supercapacitors are the most coveted eco-friendly and sustainable next-generation energy storage devices. In this regard, developing supercapacitors with high energy density and power density has always been a challenge for researchers. Herein, we have exploited an electroactive Co-containing metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) using cheap and commercially available starting materials under refluxing conditions and explored its energy storage properties in three- and two-electrode methods. The Co-MOF exhibited a specific capacitance of 425 F g-1 at 2 A g-1, maintaining a capacitance of ∼78% over 2200 successive charge-discharge cycles in a three-electrode system. The two-electrode asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) using Co-MOF as the working electrode and as-synthesized p-phenylenediamine (PPD)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PPD-rGO) as the counter electrode divulged a specific capacitance of 72.5 F g-1 at 2 A g-1 current density with ∼70% capacitive retention after 2200 successive charge-discharge cycles over a broad potential window of 0-1.6 V. Moreover, the ASC demonstrated a maximum power density of 11.9 kW kg-1 at 10 A g-1 and a maximum energy density of 25.8 W h kg-1 at 2 A g-1 current density. Owing to the stable electrochemical redox (Co2+/Co3+)-mediated pseudocapacitive behavior of the Co-MOF and the high surface area and electrical conductivity of in situ generated PPD-intercalated rGO, the fabricated ASC unveiled high-performance supercapacitive behaviors. To investigate the practical applicability of this material, solid-state (ASC) devices were fabricated by employing the Co-MOF as the positive electrode and PPD-rGO as the negative electrode in a KOH-based gel electrolyte, which could power a commercially available light-emitting diode bulb (∼1.8 V) for several seconds. Therefore, the elucidated high electrochemical energy storage performance of the prepared Co-MOF makes it a very promising electrode material for supercapacitors.
