Oligothiophene-Ring-Strapped Perylene Bisimides: Functionalizable Coaxial Donor-Acceptor Macrocycles

Aesthetic designs from nature enable new knowledge to be gained and, at the same time, inspire scientific models. In this context, multicomponent macrocycles embody the advantage of precisely positioning the structural units to achieve efficient communication between them. However, the construction of a functionalizable macrocycle for ultrafast charge separation and stabilization has not been attempted. Herein, we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and transient absorption of a new functionalizable macrocycle consisting of an oligothiophene-ring-strapped perylene bisimide. Transient absorption results point to a sequential improvement in charge separation and stabilization from the macrocycle to the corresponding linear dimer and 2D polymer due to the unique design. Our macrocycle design with a supportive spatial arrangement of the donor and acceptor units will inspire the development of more complex synthetic systems with exciting electron-transfer and charge-separation features.

Utilizing Cyanobacteria in Biophotovoltaics: An Emerging Field in Bioelectrochemistry

Anthropogenic global warming is driven by the increasing energy demand and the still dominant use of fossil energy carriers to meet these needs. New carbon-neutral energy sources are urgently needed to solve this problem. Biophotovoltaics, a member of the so-called bioelectrochemical systems family, will provide an important piece of the energy puzzle. It aims to harvest the electrons from sunlight-driven water splitting using the natural oxygenic photosystem (e.g., of cyanobacteria) and utilize them in the form of, e.g., electricity or hydrogen. Several key aspects of biophotovoltaics have been intensively studied in recent years like physicochemical properties of electrodes or efficient wiring of microorganisms to electrodes. Yet, the exact mechanisms of electron transfer between the biocatalyst and the electrode remain unresolved today. Most research is conducted on microscale reactors generating small currents over short time-scales, but multiple experiments have shown biophotovoltaics great potential with lab-scale reactors producing currents over weeks to months. Although biophotovoltaics is still in its infancy with many open research questions to be addressed, new promising results from various labs around the world suggest an important opportunity for biophotovoltaics in the decades to come. In this chapter, we will introduce the concept of biophotovoltaics, summarize its recent key progress, and finally critically discuss the potentials and challenges for future rational development of biophotovoltaics.

Computational modeling of redox enzymes

A computational methodology is briefly described, which appears to be able to accurately describe the mechanisms of redox active enzymes. The method is built on hybrid density functional theory where the inclusion of a fraction of exact exchange is critical. Two examples of where the methodology has been applied are described. The first example is the mechanism for water oxidation in photosystem II, and the second one is the mechanism for N₂ activation by nitrogenase. The mechanism for PSII has obtained very strong support from subsequent experiments. For nitrogenase, the calculations suggest that there should be an activation process prior to catalysis, which is still strongly debated.

From Solid-State Cluster Compounds to Functional PMMA-Based Composites with UV and NIR Blocking Properties, and Tuned Hues

New nanocomposite materials with UV-NIR blocking properties and hues ranging from green to brown were prepared by integrating inorganic tantalum octahedral cluster building blocks prepared via solid-state chemistry in a PMMA matrix. After the synthesis by the solid-state chemical reaction of the K₄[{Ta₆Brⁱ₁₂}Br^a₆] ternary halide, built-up from [{Ta₆Brⁱ₁₂}Br^a₆]^4- anionic building blocks, and potassium cations, the potassium cations were replaced by functional organic cations (Kat⁺) bearing a methacrylate function. The resulting intermediate, (Kat)₂[{Ta₆Brⁱ₁₂}Br^a₆], was then incorporated homogeneously by copolymerization with MMA into transparent PMMA matrices to form a brown transparent hybrid composite Ta@PMMA_brown. The color of the composites was tuned by controlling the charge and consequently the oxidation state of the cluster building block. Ta@PMMA_green was obtained through the two-electron reduction of the [{Ta₆Brⁱ₁₂}Br^a₆]^2- building blocks from Ta@PMMA_brown in solution. Indeed, the control of the oxidation state of the Ta₆ cluster inorganic building blocks occurred inside the copolymer, which not only allowed the tuning of the optical properties of the composite in the visible region but also allowed the tuning of its UV and NIR blocking properties.

Analysis of the response regulatory network of pepper genes under hydrogen peroxide stress

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a regulatory component related to plant signal transduction. To better understand the genome-wide gene expression response to H₂O₂ stress in pepper plants, a regulatory network of H₂O₂ stress-gene expression in pepper leaves and roots was constructed in the present study. We collected the normal tissues of leaves and roots of pepper plants after 40 days of H₂O₂ treatment and obtained the RNA-seq data of leaves and roots exposed to H₂O₂ for 0.5-24 h. By comparing the gene responses of pepper leaves and roots exposed to H₂O₂ stress for different time periods, we found that the response in roots reached the peak at 3 h, whereas the response in leaves reached the peak at 24 h after treatment, and the response degree in the roots was higher than that in the leaves. We used all datasets for K-means analysis and network analysis identified the clusters related to stress response and related genes. In addition, CaEBS1, CaRAP2, and CabHLH029 were identified through a co-expression analysis and were found to be strongly related to several reactive oxygen species-scavenging enzyme genes; their homologous genes in Arabidopsis showed important functions in response to hypoxia or iron uptake. This study provides a theoretical basis for determining the dynamic response process of pepper plants to H₂O₂ stress in leaves and roots, as well as for determining the critical time and the molecular mechanism of H₂O₂ stress response in leaves and roots. The candidate transcription factors identified in this study can be used as a reference for further experimental verification.

Functional Water Networks in Fully Hydrated Photosystem II

Water channels and networks within photosystem II (PSII) of oxygenic photosynthesis are critical for enzyme structure and function. They control substrate delivery to the oxygen-evolving center and mediate proton transfer at both the oxidative and reductive endpoints. Current views on PSII hydration are derived from protein crystallography, but structural information may be compromised by sample dehydration and technical limitations. Here, we simulate the physiological hydration structure of a cyanobacterial PSII model following a thorough hydration procedure and large-scale unconstrained all-atom molecular dynamics enabled by massively parallel simulations. We show that crystallographic models of PSII are moderately to severely dehydrated and that this problem is particularly acute for models derived from X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) serial femtosecond crystallography. We present a fully hydrated representation of cyanobacterial PSII and map all water channels, both static and dynamic, associated with the electron donor and acceptor sides. Among them, we describe a series of transient channels and the attendant conformational gating role of protein components. On the acceptor side, we characterize a channel system that is absent from existing crystallographic models but is likely functionally important for the reduction of the terminal electron acceptor plastoquinone Q_B. The results of the present work build a foundation for properly (re)evaluating crystallographic models and for eliciting new insights into PSII structure and function.

A review on functional nanoarchitectonics nanocomposites based on octahedral metal atom clusters (Nb6, Mo6, Ta6, W6, Re6): inorganic 0D and 2D powders and films

This review is dedicated to various functional nanoarchitectonic nanocomposites based on molecular octahedral metal atom clusters (Nb₆, Mo₆, Ta₆, W₆, Re₆). Powder and film nanocomposites with two-dimensional, one-dimensional and zero-dimensional morphologies are presented, as well as film matrices from organic polymers to inorganic layered oxides. The high potential and synergetic effects of these nanocomposites for biotechnology applications, photovoltaic, solar control, catalytic, photonic and sensor applications are demonstrated. This review also provides a basic level of understanding how nanocomposites are characterized and processed using different techniques and methods. The main objective of this review would be to provide guiding significance for the design of new high-performance nanocomposites based on transition metal atom clusters.

Enhanced oxygen evolution over dual corner-shared cobalt tetrahedra

Developing efficient catalysts is of paramount importance to oxygen evolution, a sluggish anodic reaction that provides essential electrons and protons for various electrochemical processes, such as hydrogen generation. Here, we report that the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can be efficiently catalyzed by cobalt tetrahedra, which are stabilized over the surface of a Swedenborgite-type YBCo₄O₇ material. We reveal that the surface of YBaCo₄O₇ possesses strong resilience towards structural amorphization during OER, which originates from its distinctive structural evolution toward electrochemical oxidation. The bulk of YBaCo₄O₇ composes of corner-sharing only CoO₄ tetrahedra, which can flexibly alter their positions to accommodate the insertion of interstitial oxygen ions and mediate the stress during the electrochemical oxidation. The density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the OER is efficiently catalyzed by a binuclear active site of dual corner-shared cobalt tetrahedra, which have a coordination number switching between 3 and 4 during the reaction. We expect that the reported active structural motif of dual corner-shared cobalt tetrahedra in this study could enable further development of compounds for catalyzing the OER.

Efficient oxygen evolution relies on the development of promising catalysts. Herein, the authors demonstrate that cobalt tetrahedra, stabilized over the surface of YBCo₄O₇ material, can catalyze oxygen evolution reaction efficiently.

The Investigation of the Impact of Toxicity of Metals on Oxygen-Evolving Complex in Spinacia oleracea

The current article reported the investigation of metal toxicity on the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in Spinacia oleracea related to depletion in chloride ion concentration, an essential part of the photosystem (II). The greenhouse experiment was conducted where S. oleracea was cultivated in three replicates with control plants (plants “a”) treated with tap water. Moreover, 30 ppm of Cu²⁺ ion solution and Pb²⁺ ion solution was used to irrigate the rest of the plants, labeled as plants “b” and “c”, respectively, on alternative days. Advanced technologies such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-visible Spectrophotometry were used to monitor the essential nutrients in leaves to validate the function of the photosystem (I and II). Reduced Cl⁻ ions contents showed that both metals (Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺) altered the essential elements of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem (II), required to maintain the coordination structure of the Mn₄CaO₅ cluster. SEM analysis revealed the modified leaf structure of the S. oleracea under Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ accumulation due to which distorted cellular structure, reduced surface area, and the (shattered) stomatal opening compared to the plants “a” were observed. The EDS analysis of plants “b” and “c” showed high oxygen contents followed by reduced chloride contents over plants “a”, reflecting the infirmity of OEC to push out oxygen, which leads to generating oxidative stress. The lower pigment concentration in leaves of metal-contaminated plants “b” and “c” impacts carbon assimilation, which is linked to the reduced stomatal opening and influences the gaseous exchange rates. Additionally, increased contents of K⁺ and Ca²⁺ may be due to self-defense mechanisms under low chloride contents to speed up oxygen evolution to protect plants against oxidative stress. It was concluded that Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺ metal toxicity influences essential Cl⁻ and K⁺ contents, which modify the photosystem II system; subsequently, a reduced growth rate was observed.

Atomic Reconstruction and Oxygen Evolution Reaction of Mn3O4 Nanoparticles

Understanding the chemical states of individual surface atoms and their arrangements is essential for addressing several current issues such as catalysis, energy stroage/conversion, and environmental protection. Here, we exploit a profile imaging technique to understand the correlation between surface atomic structures and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Mn₃O₄ nanoparticles. We image surface structures of Mn₃O₄ nanoparticles and observe surface reconstructions in the (110) and (101) planes. Mn³⁺ ions at the surface, which are commonly considered as the active sites in OER, disappear from the reconstructed planes, whereas Mn³⁺ ions are still exposed at the edges of nanoparticles. Our observations suggest that surface reconstructions can deactivate low-index surfaces of Mn oxides in OER. These structural and chemical observations are further validated by density functional theory calculations. This work shows why atomic-scale characterization of surface structures is crucial for a molecular-level understanding of a chemical reaction in oxide nanoparticles.

Proton-mediated photoprotection mechanism in photosystem II

Photo-induced charge separation, which is terminated by electron transfer from the primary quinone Q_A to the secondary quinone Q_B, provides the driving force for O₂ evolution in photosystem II (PSII). However, the backward charge recombination using the same electron-transfer pathway leads to the triplet chlorophyll formation, generating harmful singlet-oxygen species. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanism of proton-mediated Q_A ^⋅- stabilization. Quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) calculations show that in response to the loss of the bicarbonate ligand, a low-barrier H-bond forms between D2-His214 and Q_A ^⋅-. The migration of the proton from D2-His214 toward Q_A ^⋅- stabilizes Q_A ^⋅-. The release of the bicarbonate ligand from the binding Fe²⁺ site is an energetically uphill process, whereas the bidentate-to-monodentate reorientation is almost isoenergetic. These suggest that the bicarbonate protonation and decomposition may be a basis of the mechanism of photoprotection via Q_A ^⋅-/Q_AH^⋅ stabilization, increasing the Q_A redox potential and activating a charge-recombination pathway that does not generate the harmful singlet oxygen.

Controlled growth of a high selectivity interface for seawater electrolysis

Overall seawater electrolysis is an important direction for the development of hydrogen energy conversion. The key issues include how to achieve high selectivity, activity, and stability in seawater electrolysis reactions. In this report, the heterostructures of graphdiyne-RhO_x-graphdiyne (GDY/RhO_x/GDY) were constructed by in situ-controlled growth of GDY on RhO_x nanocrystals. A double layer interface of sp-hybridized carbon-oxide-Rhodium (sp-C∼O-Rh) was formed in this system. The microstructures at the interface are composed of active sites of sp-C∼O-Rh. The obvious electron-withdrawing surface enhances the catalytic activity with orders of magnitude, while the GDY outer of the metal oxides guarantees the stability. The electron-donating and withdrawing sp-C∼O-Rh structures enhance the catalytic activity, achieving high-performance overall seawater electrolysis with very small cell voltages of 1.42 and 1.52 V at large current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm^-2 at room temperatures and ambient pressures, respectively. The compositional and structural superiority of the GDY-derived sp-C-metal-oxide active center offers great opportunities to engineer tunable redox properties and catalytic performance for seawater electrolysis and beyond. This is a typical successful example of the rational design of catalytic systems.

Genes encoding the photosystem II proteins are under purifying selection: an insight into the early evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis

The molecular evolution concerns coding sequences (CDSs) of genes and may affect the structure and function of proteins. Non-uniform use of synonymous codons during translation, known as codon usage bias (CUB), depends on the balance between mutations bias and natural selection. We estimated different CUB indices, i.e. the effective number of codons (ENC), G + C content in the 3rd codon positions (GC₃), and codon adaptation index for CDSs of intrinsic proteins of photosystem II (PSII), such as psbA (D1), psbD (D2), psbB (CP47), psbC (CP43), and CDSs of the extrinsic protein psbO (PsbO). These genes occur in all organisms that perform oxygenic photosynthesis (OP) on Earth: cyanobacteria, algae and plants. Comparatively, a similar analysis of codon bias for CDSs of L and M subunits that constitute the core proteins of the type II reaction centre (RCII) in anoxygenic bacteria was performed. Analysis of CUB indices and determination of the number of synonymous (d_S) and nonsynonymous substitutions (d_N) in all analysed CDSs indicated that the crucial PSII and RCII proteins were under strong purifying (negative) selection in course of evolution. Purifying selection was also estimated for CDSs of atpA, the α subunit of ATP synthase, an enzyme that was most likely already present in the last universal common ancestor (LUCA). The data obtained point to an ancient origin of OP, even in the earliest stages of the evolution of life on Earth.

Binding and functions of the two chloride ions in the oxygen-evolving center of photosystem II

Light-driven water oxidation in photosynthesis occurs at the oxygen-evolving center (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII). Chloride ions (Cl^-) are essential for oxygen evolution by PSII, and two Cl^- ions have been found to specifically bind near the Mn₄CaO₅ cluster in the OEC. The retention of these Cl^- ions within the OEC is critically supported by some of the membrane-extrinsic subunits of PSII. The functions of these two Cl^- ions and the mechanisms of their retention both remain to be fully elucidated. However, intensive studies performed recently have advanced our understanding of the functions of these Cl^- ions, and PSII structures from various species have been reported, aiding the interpretation of previous findings regarding Cl^- retention by extrinsic subunits. In this review, we summarize the findings to date on the roles of the two Cl^- ions bound within the OEC. Additionally, together with a short summary of the functions of PSII membrane-extrinsic subunits, we discuss the mechanisms of Cl^- retention by these extrinsic subunits.

Response mechanisms to ocean warming exposure in Effrenium voratum (Symbiodiniaceae)

Ocean warming is an extreme environment event that has profound and lasting impacts on Symbiodiniaceae. However, their response mechanisms to elevated temperature exposure are poorly understood. In this study, the physiological and transcriptional responses of Effrenium voratum (Symbiodiniaceae) to ocean warming were examined. After exposure to 30 °C, no significant variations in growth, chlorophyll a, or photosynthetic and respiration rates were observed, while a higher temperature (34 °C) significantly reduced these physiological measurements. Meanwhile, lipid content and fatty acid composition were altered at high temperature (i.e., elevated degree of fatty acid saturation). Such biochemical constituents likely contributed to the mitigation of the negative effects of elevated temperatures. Furthermore, higher expression levels of genes related to the synthesis and elongation of fatty acids were detected at high temperature. The adjustment of lipids and fatty acid composition may be a potential mechanism by which E. voratum may survive under future global warming. Melatonin mediates reactive oxygen species homeostasis via SlCV to regulate leaf senescence in tomato plants

Melatonin (MT) functions in removing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and delaying plant senescence, thereby acting as an antioxidant; however, the molecular mechanism underlying the specific action of MT is unclear. Herein, we used the mutant plants carrying the MT decomposition gene melatonin 3-hydroxylase (M3H) in tomato to elucidate the specific mechanism of action of MT. SlM3H-OE accelerated senescence by decreasing the content of endogenous MT in plants. SlM3H is a senescence-related gene that positively regulates aging. MT inhibited the expression of the senescence-related gene SlCV to scavenge ROS, induced stable chloroplast structure, and delayed leaf senescence. Simultaneously, MT weakened the interaction between SlCV and SlPsbO/SlCAT3, reduced ROS production in photosystem II, and promoted ROS elimination. In conclusion, MT regulates ROS homeostasis and delays leaf aging in tomato plants through SlCV expression modulation.

Spin-Gated Selectivity of the Water Oxidation Reaction Mediated by Free Pentameric CaxMn5-xO5+ Clusters

We report on the first preparation of isolated ligand-free CaMn₄O₅⁺ gas-phase clusters, as well as other pentameric Ca_xMn_5-xO₅⁺ (x = 0-4) clusters with varying Ca contents, which serve as molecular models of the natural CaMn₄O₅ inorganic cluster in photosystem II. Ion trap reactivity studies with D₂O and H₂¹⁸O reveal a pronounced cluster composition-dependent ability to mediate the oxidation of water to hydrogen peroxide. First-principles density functional theory simulations elucidate the mechanism of water oxidation, proceeding via formation of a terminal oxyl radical followed by oxyl/hydroxy (O/OH) coupling. The critical coupling reaction step entails a single electron transfer from the oxyl radical to the accommodating cluster core with a concurrent O/OH coupling forming an adsorbed OOH intermediate group. The spin-conserving electron transfer step takes place when the spin of the transferred electron is aligned with the spins of the d-electrons of the Mn atoms in the cuboidal high-spin cluster isomer. The d-electrons provide a ferromagnetically ordered environment that facilitates the spin-gated selective electron transfer process, resulting in parallel-spin-exchange stabilization and a lowered transition state barrier for the coupling reaction involving the frontier orbitals of the oxyl and hydroxy reactant intermediates.

Water Oxidation Catalyzed by a Bioinspired Tetranuclear Manganese Complex: Mechanistic Study and Prediction

Density functional theory calculations were utilized to elucidate the water oxidation mechanism catalyzed by polyanionic tetramanganese complex a [Mn^III ₃ Mn^IV O₃ (CH₃ COO)₃ (A-α-SiW₉ O₃₄ )]^6- . Theoretical results indicated that catalytic active species 1 (Mn₄ ^{III,III,IV,IV} ) was formed after O₂ formation in the first turnover. From 1, three sequential proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) oxidations led to the Mn^IV -oxyl radical 4 (Mn₄ ^IV,IV,IV,IV -O⋅). Importantly, 4 had an unusual butterfly-shaped Mn₂ O₂ core for the two substrate-coordinated Mn sites, which facilitated O-O bond formation via direct coupling of the oxyl radical and the adjacent Mn^IV -coordinated hydroxide to produce the hydroperoxide intermediate Int1 (Mn₄ ^III,IV,IV,IV -OOH). This step had an overall energy barrier of 24.9 kcal mol^-1 . Subsequent PCET oxidation of Int1 to Int2 (Mn₄ ^III,IV,IV,IV -O₂ ⋅) enabled the O₂ release in a facile process. Furthermore, apart from the Si-centered complex, computational study suggested that tetramanganese polyoxometalates with Ge, P, and S could also catalyze the water oxidation process, where those bearing P and S likely present higher activities.

Materials nanoarchitectonics in a two-dimensional world within a nanoscale distance from the liquid phase

Promoted understanding of nanotechnology has enabled the construction of functional materials with nanoscale-regulated structures. Accordingly, materials science requires one-step further innovation by coupling nanotechnology with the other materials sciences. As a post-nanotechnology concept, nanoarchitectonics has recently been proposed. It is a methodology to architect functional material systems using atomic, molecular, and nanomaterial unit-components. One of the attractive methodologies would be to develop nanoarchitectonics in a defined dimensional environment with certain dynamism, such as liquid interfaces. However, nanoarchitectonics at liquid interfaces has not been fully explored because of difficulties in direct observations and evaluations with high-resolutions. This unsatisfied situation in the nanoscale understanding of liquid interfaces may keep liquid interfaces as unexplored and attractive frontiers in nanotechnology and nanoarchitectonics. Research efforts related to materials nanoarchitectonics on liquid interfaces have been continuously made. As exemplified in this review paper, a wide range of materials can be organized and functionalized on liquid interfaces, including organic molecules, inorganic nanomaterials, hybrids, organic semiconductor thin films, proteins, and stem cells. Two-dimensional nanocarbon sheets have been fabricated by molecular reactions at dynamically moving interfaces, and metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks have been fabricated by specific interactions and reactions at liquid interfaces. Therefore, functions such as sensors, devices, energy-related applications, and cell control are being explored. In fact, the potential for the nanoarchitectonics of functional materials in two-dimensional nanospaces at liquid surfaces is sufficiently high. On the basis of these backgrounds, this short review article describes recent approaches to materials nanoarchitectonics in a liquid-based two-dimensional world, i.e., interfacial regions within a nanoscale distance from the liquid phase.

Remembering James Barber (1940-2020)

James Barber, known to colleagues and friends as Jim, passed away in January 2020 after a long battle against cancer. During his long and distinguished career in photosynthesis research, Jim made many outstanding contributions with the pinnacle achieving his dream of determining the first detailed structure of the Mn cluster involved in photosynthetic water oxidation. Here, colleagues and friends remember Jim and reflect upon his scientific career and the impact he had on their lives and the scientific community.

D139N mutation of PsbP enhances the oxygen-evolving activity of photosystem II through stabilized binding of a chloride ion

Photosystem II (PSII) is a multisubunit membrane protein complex that catalyzes light-driven oxidation of water to molecular oxygen. The chloride ion (Cl^-) has long been known as an essential cofactor for oxygen evolution by PSII, and two Cl^- ions (Cl-1 and Cl-2) have been found to specifically bind near the Mn₄CaO₅ cluster within the oxygen-evolving center (OEC). However, despite intensive studies on these Cl^- ions, little is known about the function of Cl-2, the Cl^- ion that is associated with the backbone nitrogens of D1-Asn338, D1-Phe339, and CP43-Glu354. In green plant PSII, the membrane extrinsic subunits-PsbP and PsbQ-are responsible for Cl^- retention within the OEC. The Loop 4 region of PsbP, consisting of highly conserved residues Thr135-Gly142, is inserted close to Cl-2, but its importance has not been examined to date. Here, we investigated the importance of PsbP-Loop 4 using spinach PSII membranes reconstituted with spinach PsbP proteins harboring mutations in this region. Mutations in PsbP-Loop 4 had remarkable effects on the rate of oxygen evolution by PSII. Moreover, we found that a specific mutation, PsbP-D139N, significantly enhances the oxygen-evolving activity in the absence of PsbQ, but not significantly in its presence. The D139N mutation increased the Cl^- retention ability of PsbP and induced a unique structural change in the OEC, as indicated by light-induced Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) difference spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Our findings provide insight into the functional significance of Cl-2 in the water-oxidizing reaction of PSII.

The Role of Redox-Inactive Metals in Modulating the Redox Potential of the Mn4CaO4 Model Complex

Photosynthetic oxygen-evolving center (OEC), the "engine of life", is a unique Mn₄CaO₅ cluster catalyzing the water oxidation. The role of redox-inactive component Ca²⁺, which can only be functionally replaced by Sr²⁺ in a biological environment, has been under debate for a long time. Recently, its modulating effect on the redox potential of native OEC and artificial structural OEC model complex has received great attention, and linear relationship between the potential and the Lewis acidity of the redox-inactive metal has been proposed for the MMn₃O₄ model complex. In this work, the modulating effect has been studied in detail using the Mn₄CaO₄ model complex, which is the closest structural model to OEC to date and has a similar redox potential at the S₁-S₂ transition. We found the redox-inactive metal only has a weak modulating effect on the potential, which is comparable in strength to that of the ligand environments. Meanwhile, the net charge of the complex, which could be changed along with the redox-inactive metal, has a high impact on the potential and can be unified by protonation, deprotonation, or ligand modification. Although the modulating effect of the redox-inactive metal is not very strong, the linear relationship between the potential and the Lewis acidity is still valid for Mn₄MO₄ complexes. Our results of strong modulating effects for net charge and weak modulating effects for redox-inactive metal fit with the previous experimental observations on Mn₄MO₄ (M = Ca²⁺, Y³⁺, and Gd³⁺) model complexes, and suggest that Ca²⁺ can be structurally and electrochemically replaced with other metal cations, together with proper ligand modifications.

Mimicking the Oxygen-Evolving Center in Photosynthesis

The oxygen-evolving center (OEC) in photosystem II (PSII) of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms is a unique heterometallic-oxide Mn₄CaO₅-cluster that catalyzes water splitting into electrons, protons, and molecular oxygen through a five-state cycle (S_n, n = 0 ~ 4). It serves as the blueprint for the developing of the man-made water-splitting catalysts to generate solar fuel in artificial photosynthesis. Understanding the structure-function relationship of this natural catalyst is a great challenge and a long-standing issue, which is severely restricted by the lack of a precise chemical model for this heterometallic-oxide cluster. However, it is a great challenge for chemists to precisely mimic the OEC in a laboratory. Recently, significant advances have been achieved and a series of artificial Mn₄XO₄-clusters (X = Ca/Y/Gd) have been reported, which closely mimic both the geometric structure and the electronic structure, as well as the redox property of the OEC. These new advances provide a structurally well-defined molecular platform to study the structure-function relationship of the OEC and shed new light on the design of efficient catalysts for the water-splitting reaction in artificial photosynthesis.

Reversible Structural Isomerization of Nature's Water Oxidation Catalyst Prior to O-O Bond Formation

Photosynthetic water oxidation is catalyzed by a manganese–calcium oxide cluster, which experiences five “S-states” during a light-driven reaction cycle. The unique “distorted chair”-like geometry of the Mn₄CaO₅₍₆₎ cluster shows structural flexibility that has been frequently proposed to involve “open” and “closed”-cubane forms from the S₁ to S₃ states. The isomers are interconvertible in the S₁ and S₂ states, while in the S₃ state, the open-cubane structure is observed to dominate inThermosynechococcus elongatus (cyanobacteria) samples. In this work, using density functional theory calculations, we go beyond the S₃⁺Y_z state to the S₃ⁿY_z^• → S₄⁺Y_z step, and report for the first time that the reversible isomerism, which is suppressed in the S₃⁺Y_z state, is fully recovered in the ensuing S₃ⁿY_z^• state due to the proton release from a manganese-bound water ligand. The altered coordination strength of the manganese–ligand facilitates formation of the closed-cubane form, in a dynamic equilibrium with the open-cubane form. This tautomerism immediately preceding dioxygen formation may constitute the rate limiting step for O₂ formation, and exert a significant influence on the water oxidation mechanism in photosystem II.

Controlling the Deposition Process of Nanoarchitectonic Nanocomposites Based on {Nb6-xTaxXi12}n+ Octahedral Cluster-Based Building Blocks (Xi = Cl, Br; 0 ≤ x ≤ 6, n = 2, 3, 4) for UV-NIR Blockers Coating Applications

The antagonism between global energy needs and the obligation to slow global warming is a current challenge. In order to ensure sufficient thermal comfort, the automotive, housing and agricultural building sectors are major energy consumers. Solar control materials and more particularly, selective glazing are part of the solutions proposed to reduce global energy consumption and tackle global warming. In this context, these works are focused on developing new highly ultraviolet (UV) and near-infrared (NIR) absorbent nanocomposite coatings based on K₄[{Nb_6-xTa_xXⁱ₁₂}X^a₆]. (X = Cl, Br, 0 ≤ x ≤ 6) transition metal cluster compounds. These compounds contain cluster-based active species that are characterized by their strong absorption of UV and NIR radiations as well as their good transparency in the visible range, which makes them particularly attractive for window applications. Their integration, by solution processes, into a silica-polyethylene glycol or polyvinylpyrrolidone matrices is discussed. Of particular interest is the control and the tuning of their optical properties during the integration and shaping processes. The properties of the solutions and films were investigated by complementary techniques (UV-Vis-NIR spectrometry, ESI-MS, SEM, HRTEM, etc.). Results of these works have led to the development of versatile solar control coatings whose optical properties are competitive with commercialized material.

Water electrolysis: from textbook knowledge to the latest scientific strategies and industrial developments

Replacing fossil fuels with energy sources and carriers that are sustainable, environmentally benign, and affordable is amongst the most pressing challenges for future socio-economic development. To that goal, hydrogen is presumed to be the most promising energy carrier. Electrocatalytic water splitting, if driven by green electricity, would provide hydrogen with minimal CO2 footprint. The viability of water electrolysis still hinges on the availability of durable earth-abundant electrocatalyst materials and the overall process efficiency. This review spans from the fundamentals of electrocatalytically initiated water splitting to the very latest scientific findings from university and institutional research, also covering specifications and special features of the current industrial processes and those processes currently being tested in large-scale applications. Recently developed strategies are described for the optimisation and discovery of active and durable materials for electrodes that ever-increasingly harness first-principles calculations and machine learning. In addition, a technoeconomic analysis of water electrolysis is included that allows an assessment of the extent to which a large-scale implementation of water splitting can help to combat climate change. This review article is intended to cross-pollinate and strengthen efforts from fundamental understanding to technical implementation and to improve the 'junctions' between the field's physical chemists, materials scientists and engineers, as well as stimulate much-needed exchange among these groups on challenges encountered in the different domains.

Tunable metal hydroxide-organic frameworks for catalysing oxygen evolution

The oxygen evolution reaction is central to making chemicals and energy carriers using electrons. Combining the great tunability of enzymatic systems with known oxide-based catalysts can create breakthrough opportunities to achieve both high activity and stability. Here we report a series of metal hydroxide-organic frameworks (MHOFs) synthesized by transforming layered hydroxides into two-dimensional sheets crosslinked using aromatic carboxylate linkers. MHOFs act as a tunable catalytic platform for the oxygen evolution reaction, where the π-π interactions between adjacent stacked linkers dictate stability, while the nature of transition metals in the hydroxides modulates catalytic activity. Substituting Ni-based MHOFs with acidic cations or electron-withdrawing linkers enhances oxygen evolution reaction activity by over three orders of magnitude per metal site, with Fe substitution achieving a mass activity of 80 A [Formula: see text] at 0.3 V overpotential for 20 h. Density functional theory calculations correlate the enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity with the MHOF-based modulation of Ni redox and the optimized binding of oxygenated intermediates.

Gene expression and organization of thylakoid protein complexes in the PSII-less mutant of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

Photosystems I and II (PSI and PSII) are the integral components of the photosynthetic electron transport chain that utilize light to provide chemical energy for CO₂ fixation. In this study, we investigated how the deficiency of PSII affects the gene expression, accumulation, and organization of thylakoid protein complexes as well as physiological characteristics of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 by combining biochemical, biophysical, and transcriptomic approaches. RNA-seq analysis showed upregulated expression of genes encoding the PSII core proteins, and downregulation of genes associated with interaction between light-harvesting phycobilisomes and PSI. Two-dimensional separation of thylakoid protein complexes confirmed the lack of PSII complexes, yet unassembled PSII subunits were detected. The content of PsaB representing PSI was lower, while the content of cytochrome b₆f complexes was higher in the PSII-less strain as compared with control (CS). Application of oxygraph measurements revealed higher rates of dark respiration and lower PSI activity in the mutant. The latter likely resulted from the detected decrease in the accumulation of PSI, PSI monomerization, increased proportion of energetically decoupled phycobilisomes in PSII-less cultures, and low abundance of phycocyanin. Merging the functional consequences of PSII depletion with differential protein and transcript accumulation in the mutant, in comparison to CS, identified signal transduction from the photosynthetic apparatus to the genome level.

Spatiotemporal Distribution Pattern of Phytoplankton Community and Its Main Driving Factors in Dongting Lake, China—A Seasonal Study from 2017 to 2019

As it is the second-largest freshwater lake downstream of the Three Gorges Dam and an important international wetland for migratory birds, there have been concerns about the ecological water health of Dongting Lake for a long time. In the present study, we studied the evolutionary characteristics of water quality in Dongting Lake in three recent years. Moreover, the evolution rules and dominant groups of the phytoplankton community were explored, and the major influencing factors of phytoplankton and their distribution were assessed based on the field survey and detection data from 2017 to 2019. The results indicated that the water quality of Dongting Lake improved in recent years. The concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) increased by 6.91%, whereas the concentrations of the five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+–N), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) decreased by 17.5%, 13.0%, 33.8%, 7.6%, and 13.3%, respectively. The mean phytoplankton density reached 4.15 × 105 cells·L−1 in September 2017, whereas it was only 1.62 × 105 cells·L−1 in December 2018. There were 15 dominant species belonging to Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cryptophyta, and Miozoa. Moreover, Fragilaria radians (Kützing) D.M.Williams & Round and Aulacoseiragranulata (Ehrenberg) Simonsen were the dominant populations in all seasons. The Pearson and linear regression analysis also indicated that the composition and distribution of phytoplankton in Dongting Lake were mainly affected by electrical conductivity (Cond), BOD5, potassium permanganate (CODMn), and CODCr, especially in Eastern Dongting Lake. Of course, NH4+–N, TN, and TP were also the main factors affecting the density and species of the phytoplankton community, especially in Western Dongting Lake. Finally, we suggested that local government could take “The relationship between Yangtze River and Dongting Lake”, “The relationship between the seven fed rivers and Dongting Lake”, and “The relationship between human activities and Dongting Lake” as the breakthrough points to guarantee the ecological flow, water environment, and ecological quality of Dongting Lake.

Photosystem 2 and the oxygen evolving complex: a brief overview

These special issues of photosynthesis research present papers documenting progress in revealing the many aspects of photosystem 2, a unique, one-of-a-kind complex system that can reduce a plastoquinone to a plastoquinol on every second flash of light and oxidize 2 H₂O to an O₂ on every fourth flash. This overview is a brief personal assessment of the progress observed by the author over a four-decade research career, including a discussion of some remaining unsolved issues. It will come as no surprise to readers that there are remaining questions given the complexity of PS2, and the efforts that have been needed so far to uncover its secrets. In fact, most readers will have their own lists of outstanding questions.

Evidence for a robust photosystem II in the photosynthetic amoeba Paulinella

Paulinella represents the only known case of an independent primary plastid endosymbiosis, outside Archaeplastida, that occurred c. 120 (million years ago) Ma. These photoautotrophs grow very slowly in replete culture medium with a doubling time of 6-7 d at optimal low light, and are highly sensitive to photodamage under moderate light levels. We used genomic and biophysical methods to investigate the extreme slow growth rate and light sensitivity of Paulinella, which are key to photosymbiont integration. All photosystem II (PSII) genes except psb28-2 and all cytochrome b₆ f complex genes except petM and petL are present in Paulinella micropora KR01 (hereafter, KR01). Biophysical measurements of the water oxidation complex, variable chlorophyll fluorescence, and photosynthesis-irradiance curves show no obvious evidence of PSII impairment. Analysis of photoacclimation under high-light suggests that although KR01 can perform charge separation, it lacks photoprotection mechanisms present in cyanobacteria. We hypothesize that Paulinella species are restricted to low light environments because they are deficient in mitigating the formation of reactive oxygen species formed within the photosystems under peak solar intensities. The finding that many photoprotection genes have been lost or transferred to the host-genome during endosymbiont genome reduction, and may lack light-regulation, is consistent with this hypothesis.

The Electronic Origin of Far-Red-Light-Driven Oxygenic Photosynthesis

Photosystem‐II uses sunlight to trigger charge separation and catalyze water oxidation. Intrinsic properties of chlorophyll a pigments define a natural “red limit” of photosynthesis at ≈680 nm. Nevertheless, charge separation can be triggered with far‐red photons up to 800 nm, without altering the nature of light‐harvesting pigments. Here we identify the electronic origin of this remarkable phenomenon using quantum chemical and multiscale simulations on a native Photosystem‐II model. We find that the reaction center is preorganized for charge separation in the far‐red region by specific chlorophyll–pheophytin pairs, potentially bypassing the light‐harvesting apparatus. Charge transfer can occur along two distinct pathways with one and the same pheophytin acceptor (Pheo_D1). The identity of the donor chlorophyll (Chl_D1 or P_D1) is wavelength‐dependent and conformational dynamics broaden the sampling of the far‐red region by the two charge‐transfer states. The two pathways rationalize spectroscopic observations and underpin designed extensions of the photosynthetically active radiation limit.

Chlorophyll f can replace chlorophyll a in the soluble antenna of dinoflagellates

Chlorophyll f is a new type of chlorophyll isolated from cyanobacteria. The absorption and fluorescence characteristics of chlorophyll f permit these oxygenic-photosynthetic organisms to thrive in environments where white light is scarce but far-red light is abundant. To explore the ligand properties of chlorophyll f and its energy transfer profiles we established two different in vitro reconstitution systems. The reconstituted peridinin-chlorophyll f protein complex (chlorophyll f-PCP) showed a stoichiometry ratio of 4:1 between peridinin and chlorophyll f, consistent with the peridinin:chlorophyll a ratio from native PCP complexes. Using emission wavelength at 712 nm, the excitation fluorescence featured a broad peak at 453 nm and a shoulder at 511 nm confirming energy transfer from peridinin to chlorophyll f. In addition, by using a synthetic peptide mimicking the first transmembrane helix of light-harvesting chlorophyll proteins of plants, we report that chlorophyll f, similarly to chlorophyll b, did not interact with the peptide contrarily to chlorophyll a, confirming the accessory role of chlorophyll f in photosystems. The binding of chlorophyll f, even in the presence of chlorophylls a and b, by PCP complexes shows the flexibility of chlorophyll-protein complexes and provides an opportunity for the introduction of new chlorophyll species to extend the photosynthetic spectral range.

Biomimetic and Biological Nanoarchitectonics

A post-nanotechnology concept has been assigned to an emerging concept, nanoarchitectonics. Nanoarchitectonics aims to establish a discipline in which functional materials are fabricated from nano-scale components such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials using various techniques. Nanoarchitectonics opens ways to form a more unified paradigm by integrating nanotechnology with organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, material chemistry, microfabrication technology, and biotechnology. On the other hand, biological systems consist of rational organization of constituent molecules. Their structures have highly asymmetric and hierarchical features that allow for chained functional coordination, signal amplification, and vector-like energy and signal flow. The process of nanoarchitectonics is based on the premise of combining several different processes, which makes it easier to obtain a hierarchical structure. Therefore, nanoarchitectonics is a more suitable methodology for creating highly functional systems based on structural asymmetry and hierarchy like biosystems. The creation of functional materials by nanoarchitectonics is somewhat similar to the creation of functional systems in biological systems. It can be said that the goal of nanoarchitectonics is to create highly functional systems similar to those found in biological systems. This review article summarizes the synthesis of biomimetic and biological molecules and their functional structure formation from various viewpoints, from the molecular level to the cellular level. Several recent examples are arranged and categorized to illustrate such a trend with sections of (i) synthetic nanoarchitectonics for bio-related units, (ii) self-assembly nanoarchitectonics with bio-related units, (iii) nanoarchitectonics with nucleic acids, (iv) nanoarchitectonics with peptides, (v) nanoarchitectonics with proteins, and (vi) bio-related nanoarchitectonics in conjugation with materials.

Synthesizing Mechanism of the Mn4 Ca Cluster Mimicking the Oxygen-Evolving Center in Photosynthesis

The photosynthetic oxygen-evolving center (OEC) is a unique Mn₄ CaO₅ cluster that serves as a blueprint to develop superior water-splitting catalysts for the generation of solar fuels in artificial photosynthesis. It is a great challenge and long-standing issue to reveal the synthesizing mechanism of this Mn₄ CaO₅ cluster in both natural and artificial photosynthesis. Herein, efforts were made to reveal the synthesizing mechanism of an artificial Mn₄ CaO₄ cluster, a close mimic of the OEC. Four key intermediates were successfully isolated and structurally characterized for the first time. It was demonstrated that the Mn₄ CaO₄ cluster could be formed through a reaction between a thermodynamically stable Mn₃ CaO₄ cluster and an unusual four-coordinated Mn^III ion, followed by stabilization process through binding an organic base (e.g., pyridine) on the "dangling" Mn ion. These findings shed new light on the synthesizing mechanism of the OEC and rational design of new artificial water-splitting catalysts.

The chameleon-like nature of elusive cobalt-oxygen intermediates in C-H bond activation reactions

High-valence metal-oxo (M-O, M = Fe, Mn, etc.) species are well-known reaction intermediates that are responsible for a wide range of pivotal oxygenation reactions and water oxidation reactions in metalloenzymes. Although extensive efforts have been devoted to synthesizing and identifying such complexes in biomimetic studies, the structure-function relationship and related reaction mechanisms of these reaction intermediates remain elusive, especially for the cobalt-oxygen species. In the present manuscript, the calculated results demonstrate that the tetraamido macrocycle ligated cobalt complex, Co(O)(TAML) (1), behaves like a chameleon: the electronic structure varies from a cobalt(III)-oxyl species to a cobalt(IV)-oxo species when a Lewis acid Sc³⁺ salt coordinates or an acidic hydrocarbon attacks 1. The dichotomous correlation between the reaction rates of C-H bond activation by 1 and the bond dissociation energy (BDE) vs. the acidity (pK_a) was rationalized for the first time by different reaction mechanisms: for normal C-H bond activation, the Co(III)-oxyl species directly activates the C-H bond via a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism, whereas for acidic C-H bond activation, the Co(III)-oxyl species evolves to a Co(IV)-oxo species to increase the basicity of the oxygen to activate the acidic C-H bond, via a novel PCET(PT) mechanism (proton-coupled electron transfer with a PT(proton-transfer)-like transition state). These theoretical findings will enrich the knowledge of biomimetic metal-oxygen chemistry.
