Abstract
Low temperatures can inhibit plant growth and development and reduce fruit yield. This study demonstrated that the expression of AnGolS1 from Ammopiptanthus nanus (A. nanus) encoding a galactinol synthase enhanced tomato cold tolerance. In AnGolS1-overexpressing plants, the jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis substrates 13-hydroperoxylinolenicacid and 12,13-epoxylinolenicacid were significantly accumulated, and the expression levels of the ethylene response factor (SlERF4-7) and serine protease inhibitor (SlSPI5) were increased. We speculated that there may be correlations among galactinol, ethylene signaling, the protease inhibitor, protease, and JA levels. The expression levels of SlERF4-7 and SlSPI5 as well as the JA content were significantly increased under exogenous galactinol treatment. Additionally, the expression of SlSPI5 was reduced in SlERF4-7-silenced plants, and SlERF4-7 was confirmed to bind to the dehydration-responsive element (DRE) of the SlSPI5 promoter. These results suggest that SlSPI5 is a target gene of the SlERF4-7 transcription factor. In addition, SlSPI5 interacted with cysteine protease (SlCPase), while SlCPase interacted with lipoxygenase (SlLOX5) and allene oxide synthase (SlAOS2). When SlCPase was silenced, JA levels increased and plant cold tolerance was enhanced. Therefore, galactinol regulates JA biosynthesis to enhance tomato cold tolerance through the SlERF4-7-SlSPI5-SlCPase-SlLOX5/SlAOS2 model. Overall, our study provides new perspectives on the role of galactinol in the JA regulatory network in plant adaptation to low-temperature stress.

Abstract
Rural ecology is a comprehensive field of study that takes the rural social-ecological-economic systems as the objective object and emphasizes spatial carrier governance. The development of rural ecology in the New Era embodies and implements comprehensively the core concepts of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Cha-racteristics for a New Era, including harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, rural revitalization, green development, and the comprehensive construction of a socialist modernized nation. Under the goal of Chinese-style modernization, rural ecology exhibits characteristics distinct from the past, such as the integration of research objects, the intersectionality of basic theories, the computational feature of technical methods, and the orientation of exporting outcomes. To provide disciplinary support for modernization-oriented science to meet the new demands of country's rural development, effectively narrating the story of sustainable rural development in China and providing fundamental guarantees for the safety of rural systems, a number of issues such as paradigm innovation in research, improvement of data quality, and integration of comprehensive technologies, should be fully considered.

Abstract
Melatonin (MT) functions in removing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and delaying plant senescence, thereby acting as an antioxidant; however, the molecular mechanism underlying the specific action of MT is unclear. Herein, we used the mutant plants carrying the MT decomposition gene melatonin 3-hydroxylase (M3H) in tomato to elucidate the specific mechanism of action of MT. SlM3H-OE accelerated senescence by decreasing the content of endogenous MT in plants. SlM3H is a senescence-related gene that positively regulates aging. MT inhibited the expression of the senescence-related gene SlCV to scavenge ROS, induced stable chloroplast structure, and delayed leaf senescence. Simultaneously, MT weakened the interaction between SlCV and SlPsbO/SlCAT3, reduced ROS production in photosystem II, and promoted ROS elimination. In conclusion, MT regulates ROS homeostasis and delays leaf aging in tomato plants through SlCV expression modulation.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate and evaluate the correlation between event-related potentials, cranial magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalogram on cognitive function in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Methods: According to the exclusion criteria, 60 adult temporal lobe epilepsy patients (24 males and 36 females, 34±13 years old of average age) were enrolled in the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University from March 2017 to September 2018. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 24 h video electroencephalogram (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERPs) were detected in all patients, comparing the latency of N1, P2, N2, P3 waves and the amplitude of P3 waves. Results: The mean latency of the waves of N1, P2, N2 and P3 and the mean amplitude of P3 wave were (108±25), (182±30), (256±33), (367±40) ms and (6.4±5.8) μV. There were significant differences in ERPs (latency of N1 wave, N2 wave and P3 wave) between the MRI abnormal group and the normal group (all P<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the ERPs (P3 wave latency) between EEG examination found epileptiform or paroxysmal slow waves release group and the patients with EEG normality in the past 1 year (P<0.05) and the EEG test results were positively correlated with the latency of P2, N2 and P3 waves in ERPs, and negatively correlated with the amplitude of P3 waves (P<0.05). Conclusion: Patients with cognitive dysfunction in temporal lobe epilepsy are more likely to have abnormal MRI and EEG in the head. Both of them show different effects on the cognitive process of patients in ERPs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the possible photoprotection mechanisms of cyclic and linear electron flux (CEF and LEF) under specific high temperature and high light (HH) stress. METHODS Six-leaf-stage tomato seedlings ("Liaoyuanduoli", n=160) were divided into four parts: Part 1, served as control under 25 °C, 500 µmol/(m2·s); Part 2, spayed with distilled water (H2O) under 35 °C, 1000 µmol/(m2·s) (HH); Part 3, spayed with 100 µmol/L diuron (DCMU, CEF inhibitor) under HH; Part 4, spayed with 60 µmol/L methyl viologen (MV, LEF inhibitor) under HH. Energy conversion, photosystem I (PSI), and PSII activity, and trans-thylakoid membrane proton motive force were monitored during the treatment of 5 d and of the recovering 10 d. RESULTS HH decreased photochemical reaction dissipation (P) and the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), and increased the excitation energy distribution coefficient of PSII (β); DCMU and MV aggravated the partition imbalance of the excitation energy (γ) and the photoinhibition degree. With prolonged DCMU treatment time, electron transport rate and quantum efficiency of PSI (ETRI and YI) significantly decreased whereas acceptor and donor side limitation of PSI (YNA and YND) increased. MV led to a significant decline and accession of yield of regulated and non-regulated energy YNPQ and YNO, respectively. Membrane integrity and ATPase activity were reduced by HH stress, and DCMU and MV enhanced inhibitory actions. CONCLUSIONS The protective effects of CEF and LEF were mediated to a certain degree by meliorations in energy absorption and distribution as well as by maintenance of thylakoid membrane integrity and ATPase activity.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of c-fos on multidrug resistance of laryngeal cancer TU177 cells. Method: Increasing drug concentration gradient is adopted to establish the stability of the laryngeal cancer drug resistance in cell line; RT-PCR and Western blot were used to detect difference of the c-fos between TU177 and TU177/VCR cells; plasmids with human c-fos knockdown or over expression were transfected into TU177/VCR and TU177 cells respectively, and the effects of different treatment on cell proliferation were investigated with MTT. Results: The drug resistance of TU177/VCR cells was 26.25-fold in vincristine (VCR), 7.33-fold in Paclitaxel (TAX), 2.41 in cisplatin (DDP), and 5.50 in 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), comparing with TU177( P<0.05). The TU177/VCR cells had significantly higher c-fos expression compared to TU177 cells( P<0.05). The results showed that the IC(50) values of 5-FU for the NC group and c-fos shRNA group were (306.2±6.3)μmol/L and (81.3±3.9)μmol/L, respectively, which was decreased by 73% in the c-fos shRNA group compared to that in the NC group (P<0.05). Similarly, the results showed that the IC(50) values for 5-FU were (55.3±9.4) μmol/L in NC group and (288.1±7.3)μmol/L in c-fos WT group, which was increased 5.21-fold in c-fos WT cells. Conclusion: C-fos plays important role in multidrug resistance of larynx cancer cell TU177/VCR, and might become a new molecular target for laryngeal cancer treatment.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Measurement of bone turnover markers is an alternative way to determine the effects of exercise on bone health. A 10-week group-based step aerobics exercise significantly improved functional fitness in postmenopausal women with low bone mass, and showed a positive trend in reducing resorption activity via bone turnover markers. INTRODUCTION The major goal of this study was to determine the effects of short-term group-based step aerobics (GBSA) exercise on the bone metabolism, bone mineral density (BMD), and functional fitness of postmenopausal women (PMW) with low bone mass. METHODS Forty-eight PMW (aged 58.2 ± 3.5 years) with low bone mass (lumbar spine BMD T-score of -2.00 ± 0.67) were recruited and randomly assigned to an exercise group (EG) or to a control group (CG). Participants from the EG attended a progressive 10-week GBSA exercise at an intensity of 75-85 % of heart rate reserve, 90 min per session, and three sessions per week. Serum bone metabolic markers (C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen [CTX] and osteocalcin), BMD, and functional fitness components were measured before and after the training program. Mixed-models repeated measures method was used to compare differences between the groups (α = 0.05). RESULTS After the 10-week intervention period, there was no significant exercise program by time interaction for CTX; however, the percent change for CTX was significantly different between the groups (EG = -13.1 ± 24.4 % vs. CG = 11.0 ± 51.5 %, P < 0.05). While there was no significant change of osteocalcin in both groups. As expected, there was no significant change of BMD in both groups. In addition, the functional fitness components in the EG were significantly improved, as demonstrated by substantial enhancement in both lower- and upper-limb muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The current short-term GBSA exercise benefited to bone metabolism and general health by significantly reduced bone resorption activity and improved functional fitness in PMW with low bone mass. This suggested GBSA could be adopted as a form of group-based exercise for senior community.

Abstract
Somatic embryogenesis and organogenesis in Lilium pumilum were successfully regulated by picloram, α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), and 6-benzyladenine (BA). In organogenesis, the highest shoot regeneration frequency (92.5%) was obtained directly from bulb scales on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 2.0 mg L−1 BA and 0.2 mg L−1 NAA, while organogenic callus (OC) formed from leaves on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L−1 BA and 0.5 mg L−1 NAA. Following subculture, 76.7% of OC regenerated shoots. In somatic embryogenesis, the combination of picloram and NAA increased the amount of embryogenic callus (EC) that formed with a maximum on 90.7% of all explants which formed 11 somatic embryos (SEs) per explant. Differences between EC and OC in cellular morphology and cell differentiation fate were easily observed. SEs initially formed via an exogenous or an endogenous origin. The appearance of a protoderm in heart-shaped SE and the bipolar shoot–root development in oval-shaped SE indicated true somatic embryogenesis. This protocol provides a new and detailed regulation and histological examination of regeneration pattern in L. pumilum.

Abstract
Objective:To compare the clinical efficacy between the endoscopic thyroidectomy by complete areola approach and the conventional open thyroidectomy.Method:One hundred and twenty-one cases of endoscopic thyroidectomy by complete areola approach or conventional open thyroidectomy patients were reviewed retrospectively, whose operation time, median blood lose, volume of postoperative drainage, incision scar formation rate and patient satisfaction were observed and compared.Result:There were obvious advantages in the median blood lose, volume of postoperative drainage, incision scar formation rate and patient satisfaction in the group of endoscopic thyroidectomy by complete areola approach comparing conventional open thyroidectomy. The difference was statistically significant(P <0.05).Conclusion:The method of endoscopic thyroidectomy by complete areola approach is obviously better , which has many advantages, such as Less bleeding, less volume of wound drainage and small skin incision scar. The patients were satisfied with the treatment.It is worthy of clinical application.

Abstract
Studies examining the role of interleukin (IL)-1β -511C/T promoter polymorphism in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have shown inconsistent results. This meta-analysis was performed to assess the association between the IL-1β-511C/T promoter polymorphism and COPD susceptibility. Published case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies from Pubmed, Embase, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were retrieved. Data were extracted and pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Twelve studies with 1692 cases and 2009 controls were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled effect size showed an overall but not significantly decreased risk of IL-1β-511 C/T with COPD susceptibility (OR = 0.89, 95%CI = 0.78-1.01) in a complete overdominant genetic model (TT+CC vs CT), indicating that homozygous individuals (CC and TT) have a decreased risk for COPD compared with heterozygotes (CT). In subgroup analysis by ethnicity, IL-1β-511C/T was significantly correlated with a decreased risk of COPD in Asians (OR = 0.73, 95%CI = 0.60-0.88, P = 0.001), but not in Caucasians (OR = 1.02, 95%CI = 0.83- 1.24, P = 0.46), confirming a protective role of IL-1β-511C/T in COPD in Asians. Moreover, after excluding studies that included populations not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, the pooled results were robust and no publication bias was observed. This meta-analysis suggests that the IL-1β-511C/T promoter polymorphism deceases the risk of COPD in Asians.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The formation and development of bulblets are crucial to the Lilium genus since these processes are closely related to carbohydrate metabolism, especially to starch and sucrose metabolism. However, little is known about the transcriptional regulation of both processes. To gain insight into carbohydrate-related genes involved in bulblet formation and development, we conducted comparative transcriptome profiling of Lilium davidii var. unicolor bulblets at 0 d, 15 d (bulblets emerged) and 35 d (bulblets formed a basic shape with three or four scales) after scale propagation. RESULTS Analysis of the transcriptome revealed that a total of 52,901 unigenes with an average sequence size of 630 bp were generated. Based on Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG) analysis, 8% of the sequences were attributed to carbohydrate transport and metabolism. The results of KEGG pathway enrichment analysis showed that starch and sucrose metabolism constituted the predominant pathway among the three library pairs. The starch content in mother scales and bulblets decreased and increased, respectively, with almost the same trend as sucrose content. Gene expression analysis of the key enzymes in starch and sucrose metabolism suggested that sucrose synthase (SuSy) and invertase (INV), mainly hydrolyzing sucrose, presented higher gene expression in mother scales and bulblets at stages of bulblet appearance and enlargement, while sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) showed higher expression in bulblets at morphogenesis. The enzymes involved in the starch synthetic direction such as ADPG pyrophosphorylase (AGPase), soluble starch synthase (SSS), starch branching enzyme (SBE) and granule-bound starch synthase (GBSS) showed a decreasing trend in mother scales and higher gene expression in bulblets at bulblet appearance and enlargement stages while the enzyme in the cleavage direction, starch de-branching enzyme (SDBE), showed higher gene expression in mother scales than in bulblets. CONCLUSIONS An extensive transcriptome analysis of three bulblet development stages contributes considerable novel information to our understanding of carbohydrate metabolism-related genes in Lilium at the transcriptional level, and demonstrates the fundamentality of carbohydrate metabolism in bulblet emergence and development at the molecular level. This could facilitate further investigation into the molecular mechanisms underlying these processes in lily and other related species.

Abstract
An experiment of continuous cropping of cucumber in nutrition medium (composted with straw, rural soil and puffed chicken manure) or soil was conducted in greenhouse in order to study the effects of medium type on the cucumber growth and soil microenvironment, respectively. The results showed that the two treatments both displayed different levels of obstacles resulted from continuous cropping. In the same cropping season, the nutrient content, soil invertase and urease activities and B/F (bacteria/fungi) ratio in the nutrition medium were obviously higher but fungi quantity was lower than in the soil medium, suggesting the use of nutrition medium changed the bacterial population structure as to improve the cucumber growth and yield. Under continuous cropping, correlation analysis showed that the bacterial quantity was significantly positively related with plant height and root dry mass, and markedly significantly positive correlation exited between the aboveground dry mass and yield of cucumber. The urease activity was also significantly positively related with the cucumber yield. Compared with the soil medium, the nutrition medium could greatly improve soil microenvironment and alleviate the continuous cropping obstacle.

Abstract
By using aeroponics culture system, this paper studied the effects of elevated rhizosphere CO2 concentration on the leaf photosynthesis and the fruit yield and quality of muskmelon during its anthesis-fruiting period. In the fruit development period of muskmelon, as compared with those in the control (350 microL CO2 x L (-1)), the leaf chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and the maximal photochemical efficiency of PS II (Fv/Fm) in treatments 2500 and 5000 microL CO2 x L(-1) decreased to some extents, but the stomatal limitation value (Ls) increased significantly, and the variation amplitudes were larger in treatment 5000 microL CO2 x L(-1) than in treatment 2500 microL CO2 x L(-1). Under the effects of elevated rhizosphere CO2 concentration, the fruit yield per plant and the Vc and soluble sugar contents in fruits decreased markedly, while the fruit organic acid content was in adverse. It was suggested that when the rhizosphere CO2 concentration of muskmelon during its anthesis-fruiting period reached to 2500 microL x L(-1), the leaf photosynthesis and fruit development of muskmelon would be depressed obviously, which would result in the decrease of fruit yield and quality of muskmelon.

Abstract
The effects of low night temperature (LNT, i.e., 9 and 6 °C) stress and rewarming (15 °C night temperature) on the photosynthesis, photosystems I and II (PSI and PSII), and antioxidant system of tomato leaves were studied. The results showed that 9 d of LNT treatment led to an irreversible reduction in the photosynthetic rate. This reduction was accompanied by stomatal limitation of CO₂ supply and significant decline in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity at the transcription level, as well as sucrose accumulation. LNT treatment induced the reversible photoinhibition of PSII, decreased PSII activity, increased the photochemical yield of PSI Y(I), and markedly caused the acceptor side limitation of PSI. This finding was reflected by the higher value of Y(NA) in the treated plants than in the control. At the same time, a downregulation of electron transport for photosynthetic carbon reduction under LNT was mostly compensated by Ja(O₂-dependent) driven by the water-water cycle.

Abstract
AIM Concerns have been raised regarding the effects of prolonged intensive training on adolescent athletes. This study investigated the differences in mucosal immune functions and stress responses between intensively trained male adolescent volleyball players and age-matched sedentary controls. METHODS Twelve male volleyball players (16.5 [0.7] years of age) and sixteen healthy sedentary male volunteers (17.1 [0.6] years of age) participated in this study. Volleyball players were engaged in regular and year-round training. Unstimulated saliva samples were collected from volleyball players during the high-intensity training period and from the counterparts at the same timepoints after at least 18 hours of rest. Concentrations of salivary total protein, secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA), cortisol, and lactoferrin were measured. RESULTS Results of this study revealed that the SIgA concentrations and the ratio of SIgA/total protein in volleyball players were significantly lower compared with those in sedentary controls. However, the salivary cortisol concentrations and the ratio of cortisol/total protein in volleyball players were markedly higher compared with those in sedentary controls. No significant difference was observed in lactoferrin levels between volleyball players and sedentary controls. CONCLUSION The findings of this study suggest that the prolonged intensive training may elicit a sustained stress and induce a suppressive effect on mucosal immunity in regularly and intensively trained adolescent athletes.

Abstract
The most important quality for muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) is their sweetness which is closely related to the soluble sugars content. Leaves are the main photosynthetic organs in plants and thus the source of sugar accumulation in fruits since sugars are translocated from leaves to fruits. The effects of grafting muskmelon on two different inter-specific (Cucurbita maxima×C. moschata) rootstocks was investigated with respect to photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism. Grafting Zhongmi1 muskmelon on RibenStrong (GR) or Shengzhen1 (GS) rootstocks increased chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and chlorophyll a+b content and the leaf area in middle and late developmental stages of the plant compared to the ungrafted Zhongmi1 check (CK). Grafting enhanced the net photosynthesis rate, the stomatal conductance, concentration of intercellular CO(2) and transpiration rate. Grafting influenced carbohydrates contents by changing carbohydrate metabolic enzymes activities which was observed as an increase in acid invertase and neutral invertase activity in the functional leaves during the early and middle developmental stages compared to CK. Grafting improved sucrose phosphate synthase and stachyose synthase activities in middle and late developmental stages, thus translocation of sugars (such as sucrose, raffinose and stachyose) in GR and GS leaves were significantly enhanced. However, compared with CK, translocation of more sugars in grafted plants did not exert feedback inhibition on photosynthesis. Our results indicate that grafting muskmelon on inter-specific rootstocks enhances photosynthesis and translocation of sugars in muskmelon leaves.

Abstract
By using aeroponics culture system, this paper studied the impacts of root-zone hypoxia (10% O2 and 5% O2) stress on the plant growth, root respiratory metabolism, and antioxidative enzyme activities of muskmelon at its fruit development stage. Root-zone hypoxia stress inhibited the plant growth of muskmelon, resulting in the decrease of plant height, root length, and fresh and dry biomass. Comparing with the control (21% O2), hypoxia stress reduced the root respiration rate and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) activity significantly, and the impact of 5% O2 stress was more serious than that of 10% O2 stress. Under hypoxic conditions, the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activities and the malondialdehyde (MDA) content were significantly higher than the control. The increment of antioxidative enzyme activities under 10% O2 stress was significantly higher than that under 5% O2 stress, while the MDA content was higher under 5% O2 stress than under 10% O2 stress, suggesting that when the root-zone oxygen concentration was below 10%, the aerobic respiration of muskmelon at its fruit development stage was obviously inhibited while the anaerobic respiration was accelerated, and the root antioxidative enzymes induced defense reaction. With the increasing duration of hypoxic stress, the lipid peroxidation would be aggravated, resulting in the damages on muskmelon roots, inhibition of plant growth, and decrease of fruit yield and quality.

Abstract
Aeroponics can increase the fruit yield of tomato plant, but its cost is very high. In this paper, tomato seedlings were planted with three cultures, i. e., whole perlite culture (CK), perlite-aeration culture (T1), and aeroponics (T2), and a comparative study was made on the seedlings growth. Compared with CK, T1 improved the gas environment in root zone significantly, with the CO2 and O2 concentrations in root zone being 0.2 and 1.17 times higher, and increased the plant height and stem diameter after 60 days of transplanting by 5.1% and 8.4%, respectively. The plant net photosynthetic rate of T1 was significantly higher than that of CK, with the maximum value after transplanting 45 days increased by 13%. T1 also increased the root activity and ion absorbing ability significantly, with the root activity after transplanting 45 days being 1.23 times of CK, and the root K, Ca, and Mg contents after transplanting 60 days increased by 31%, 37%, and 27%, respectively. The fruit yield of T1 was 1.16 times of CK. No significant differences in these indices were observed between T1 and T2, and less difference in the fruit soluble sugar and organic acid contents as well as the sugar-acid ratio was found among CK, T1, and T2. It was suggested that perlite-aeration cultivation pattern was an easy and feasible way to markedly improve the fruit yield of tomato plant.

Abstract
Based on the cluster analysis of relative germination potential and relative germination rate under NaCl stress, fourteen tomato genotypes were clustered into two groups. Five tomato genotypes held high resistance to NaCl stress, and nine tomato genotypes were moderately NaCl- tolerant. The highly NaCl- tolerant genotypes wild Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium, Liaoyuanhongmanao and Hongbaoshi and the moderately NaCl- tolerant genotype Liaoyuanhongduoli were then under different Na(+)-salts and NaCl, Na+, and Cl- stresses. The responses of the four tomato genotypes to different Na(+)-salts stress were the same as those to NaCl stress. Among the test Na(+)-salts, NaHCO3 had the greatest impact. Under the stress of 100 mmol NaHCO3 x L(-1), the embryo's relative lengths of the four tomato genotypes were all below 8%. The inhibitory effect of test Na(+)-salts on tomato seed germination was in the order of NaNO3 < Na2SO4 < NaH2PO4 < NaCl < NaHCO3. As for NaCl, Na+ and Cl-, the Cl- had the smallest injury.

Abstract
A water culture experiment was conducted with the seedlings of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cultivar Liaoyuanduoli to study the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on their sucrose metabolism under NaCl stress. The seedlings were treated with different concentrations (100, 300, and 500 mg x L(-1)) of SA, and the contents of sucrose, glucose, and fructose as well as the related enzyme activities of sucrose metabolism, including acid invertase (AI), neutral invertase (NI), sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS), and sucrose synthase (SS), in seedling leaves were determined. Under NaCl stress, SA could maintain or enhance the leaf fructose and glucose contents and the leaf AI, NI, SPS and SS activities, with the highest increment of fructose and glucose contents being 30.0% and 31.1% and that of AI, NI, SPS and SS activities being 24.7%, 27.9%, 22.0% and 24.5%, respectively, in comparing with no SA application, while had less effect on the leaf sucrose content, which suggested that SA could play a protective role in the NaCl-tolerance of tomato seedlings via enhancing the leaf invertase activity to increase leaf fructose and glucose contents. The best alleviating effect was observed at 500 mg x L(-1) of SA.

Abstract
Tomato seedlings were treated with 15 degrees C (control), 12 degrees C, 9 degrees C, and 6 degrees C at night for seven days to study the changes of their leaf photosynthesis and chloroplast ultrastructure, aimed to make sure the recovery effect of the photosynthesis of tomato leaves after a short-term low nocturnal temperature. The results showed that short-term low nocturnal temperature was favorable to the photosynthesis of tomato leaves at recovery stage. The chlorophyll content could recover to the normal level as control under the treatments of 12 degrees C and 9 degrees C, but not under the treatment of 6 degrees C. The formation of stoma was not seriously inhibited by low nocturnal temperature. On the contrary, the stoma formation and its growth were stimulated at recovery stage. Under the treatment of 6 degrees C, chloroplast grana layers arranged loosely, and their number reduced. In the seven days of recovery, the lower the treatment temperature, the smaller and the fewer the starch grains were, and the more compact and tidy the chloroplast grana became. In addition, the transportation of photosynthesis products was promoted after short-term low nocturnal temperature.

Abstract
SUMMARY We independently assessed the frequency, severity and determinants of neurological deficits after endovascular embolization with NBCA of brain arteriovenous malformations (BAVMs) to have a better basis for making treatment decisions. All the charts of 469 BAVMs patients who underwent embolization with NBCA were reviewed. We analyzed the complications and their relation to angiographic features. The 469 patients were treated with 1108 endovascular procedures. Each met one to eight times, average 2.3 times. Eleven patients showed treatment-related complications, including four haemorrhagic and seven ischemic complications. Of these 11 cases, two died, two had persistent disabling deficits, and another seven suffered transient neurological deficits. Our finding suggests a low rate of disabling treatment complications for embolization of brain AVMs with NBCA in this center. The management of AVM patients who have high risk of embolization therapy should be treated by special strategy.

Abstract
SUMMARY We report a patient with a wide-necked aneurysm arising at the bifurcation of the right internal carotid artery and the persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA) treated successfully by Matrix detachable coil occlusion and assisted by a Neuroform intracranial stent. First, a Neuroform self-expanding intracranial stent was delivered via a 5-F Guider Softtip XP and placed as desired, then the aneurysm dome was embolized with two Matrix detachable coils through the interstices of the stent. The aneurysm was 80% occluded angiographically and the parent artery was patent. DSA imaging six months after the procedure showed the aneurysm to be obliterated at angiography and the neck tissue thickness of the aneurysm to be increased, but the parent artery diameter was not impacted. We describe the case in detail and discuss our preliminary experience of using the Neuroform stent and Matrix detachable coils for the treatment of a PPTA wide-necked aneurysm.

Abstract
AIM To develop an orally administered colon targeting drug delivery system dexamethasone succinate dextran (DSD) tablets. METHODS Dexamethasone succinate dextran was synthesized in an anhydrous environment. Using 4-dimethyl aminopyridine and 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole as the catalyzer. The chemical structure was identified by UV, IR, NMR and MS. The contents of dexamethasone in various samples were determined by HPLC. RESULTS Dexamethasone was distributed mainly in plasma and gastric contents after the oral administration of common tablets. In contrast, after oral administration of DSD tablets, the recovery of dexamethasone in plasma and gastric contents decreased significantly, while the percentage of dexamethasone in cecum and colon increased obviously. CONCLUSION The experimental results showed the good colon targeting property of DSD prodrug compared with free dexamethasone.

AIM To study the pharmacokinetic characteristics of lactosaminated recombinant human growth hormone (hGH-L) in mice. METHODS The biodistribution was studied with in vivo radioactive tracer technique. The pharmacokinetics was investigated by radioimmunoassay (RIA) method of hGH-L. The results were compared with that of recombinant human growth hormone (hGH). RESULTS 125I-hGH-L has remarkable livertaxis. The area under drug concentration-time curve (32686.9 microg . min . L-1) in blood and serum mean residence time (21.4 min) of hGH-L are less than that of hGH (36913.1 microg . min . L-1 and 24.9 min) (P < 0.05). In target organ liver, hGH-L distribution half life (1.8 min) and elimination half life (11.1 min) are shorter than that of hGH (2.1 min and 27.7 min) (P < 0.05). The area under drug concentration-time curve (17621.9 microg . min . L-1) of hGH-L is bigger than that of hGH(12148.2 microg . min . L-1) (P < 0.05) in liver. CONCLUSION The pharmacokinetic parameters of hGH-L has obvious advantage over that of hGH.

Abstract
To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of childhood type 1 diabetes mellitus in China, newly diagnosed cases of type 1 diabetes with an onset age under 15 years were retrospectively registered by 23 local centers in China following a standardized protocol on the basis of the nationwide registry established by the WHO DiaMond Project China Participating Center, Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine (CAPM). A population of about 24 million children were covered in the defined areas. A two-sample capture-recapture method was used to estimate case ascertainment. Between 1988 and 1996, 903 diabetic cases were registered in 9 ethnic groups. The overall ascertainment corrected incidence rate (IR) was 0.59 per 100,000 person-year. The IR was 0.52/100,000 (95% CI: 0.50-0.54) for males and 0.66/100,000 (95% CI: 0.64-0.68) for females. The standardized ascertainment corrected IR by the national age-specific population in 1990 was 0.57 per 100,000 person-year. The incidence among various ethnic groups ranged from 0.25/100,000 to 3. 06/100,000. The IRs increased with northern latitude, and the IR of Han population was significantly higher in North China compared with South China (0.67 versus 0.53 per 100,000 respectively, P < 0.01). A correlation model of incidence and calendar time showed that the IR increased significantly between 1988 and 1996 (r = 0.86, P = 0.0027). The relative risk (RR) of type 1 diabetes mellitus for different age-groups estimated by a Poisson regression model showed that taking RR as 1.00 for age-group from 0 to 4 years, the RR for age-group from 5 to 9 year and from 10 to 14 year was 2.30 and 3.60 respectively. The standardized ascertainment corrected IR of childhood type 1 diabetes mellitus in China in much lower than in other countries. The geographic and ethnic variability of the incidence suggests that both genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of childhood diabetes in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Prostate secretory epithelial cells have the unique function and capability of accumulating extremely high intracellular levels of zinc. One of the effects of this accumulation is inhibition of cell growth due, in part, to an increase in apoptosis. The present studies were conducted to determine if this zinc-induced apoptosis involves stimulation of mitochondrial apoptogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The PC-3 a human malignant prostate cell line, which is zinc accumulating, was exposed to medium supplemented with physiologic levels of zinc. RESULTS By 24 h, zinc treatment resulted in the translocation of cytochrome c from the mitochondria to the cytosol, the activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3, and eventually, the cleavage of nuclear poly(ADP)-ribose polymerase (PARP). Under similar conditions, exposure of freshly prepared rat ventral prostate cells (which are also zinc accumulating) resulted in increased apoptosis following translocation of cyochrome c and activation of caspases-9 and 3. The human prostate PZ-HPV-7 cells, which do not accumulate zinc, did not exhibit any apoptotic effect from zinc treatment. CONCLUSION The accumulation of high intracellular levels of zinc by prostate cells induces mitochondrial apoptogenesis. This represents a newly identified physiological effect of zinc in the regulation of prostate cell growth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To improve the clinical result of repair on flexor tendon injury, and recover the defected finger function in children as far as possible. METHODS From January 1990 to October 1997, 12 cases with flexor tendon injury were repaired by microsurgical technique, sutured by modified Kessler method with 3/0 or 5/0 nontraumatic thread and followed by invering suture of the gap edge with 7/0 or 8/0 nontraumatic thread after debridement. Appropriate functional practice was performed postoperatively. RESULTS All the defected fingers were healed by first intention. Followed up 6 months to 1 year, there was excellent in 7 cases, better in 4 cases, moderate in 1 case and 91.67% in excellent rate according to the TAM standard of International Hand Committee. CONCLUSION The important measures to improve the clinical result in children's flexor tendon injury are prompt and accurate diagnosis and repair of the injured tendon by microsurgical technique, and effective postoperative functional practice.

Abstract
Effects of myocardial hypertrophy on the Na+/Ca2+ exchange current in isolated rat cardiac myocytes were investigated, using whole cell patch techniques. Goldblatt 2-kidney, one-clip technique was used to induce cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. The results demonstrated that the Ni(2+)-sensitive Na+/Ca2+ exchange current density was larger in hypertrophied cells than that in normal cells. At a holding potential of mV, the outward current densities were 1.53 +/- 0.31 pA/pF in normal cells and 2.62 +/- 0.53 pA/pF in hypertrophied cells (P < 0.01). At a holding potential of -100 mV, the inward current densities were 0.42 +/- 0.14 pA/pF in normal cells and 1.12 +/- 0.33 pA/pF in hypertrophied cells (P < 0.001). The results suggest that during myocardial hypertrophy the Na+/Ca2+ exchange current is significantly increased.

Abstract
Neoglycoalbumin (NGA), a special ligend of asialoglycoprotein receptor on the hepatocyte, was linked via a butanediacyl bridge to acyclovir to form a conjugate NGA-ACV. By using DTA (Differential thermoanalysis) and HPLC analysis, ACV was shown to be connected with NGA by covalent bonds and stable in blood. The radio-biodistribution of 131I-NGA-ACV with high drug density in vivo was carried out in mice. The maximum absorption of 131I-NGA-ACV in liver was 81.7 +/- 10.4% at 5 min. The radioimage of 131I-NGA-ACV with high or low drug density in rabbit showed no significant difference in liver targeting property. The competitive connection tests indicated that 131I-NGA-ACV was concentrated in liver through receptor mediated mechanism. A tentative test of antihepatitis B of NGA-ACV and ACV in vitro showed that the effective dose of the former was significantly lower than that of the latter.

Abstract
The effects of minor compounds on the oxidative stability of soybean oil were studied by measuring the contents of peroxides, headspace oxygen and volatile compounds. The effects of processing on minor component contents were also studied. Fatty acids, mono- and diacylglycerols, thermal or oxidized triacylglycerols, oxidized tocopherols and peroxides acted as prooxidant in soybean oil during storage at 55 degrees C. The phospholipids acted as prooxidant or antioxidant depending on the presence or absence of metals in the oil. The tocopherols acted as prooxidant or antioxidant depending on their concentration in the oil. The chlorophyll acted as a sensitizer to generate singlet oxygen in the photooxidation of soybean oils.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to determine what factors cause variation in individual work output (economic productivity). Forty-five young male Chinese cycle haulers from Beijing were assessed for physiological work capacity, size and body composition, health, nutritional status, cold resistance, household social environment, and motivation. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory as well as under actual working conditions; ethnographic observations were made in the household and on the job during the Beijing winter of 1992. Overall work motivation correlated to actual monthly distance/load measures of productivity the most strongly (r = 0.518), followed by physiological capacity estimated by heart rate:speed ratio during field experiments (r = -0.473). Alcohol consumption (a negative factor), household health, and carbohydrate intake were all moderate predictors. Maximum oxygen uptake showed lower correlation (r = 0.261), and among anthropometric values only relatively long lower legs were predictive (r = 0.298). Since many of these variable categories were relatively independent of each other, multiple regression analysis showed that together they explained 61.6% of the work output variance. Simultaneous prediction by FASEM (LISREL) is also very strong.

Abstract
A retrospective study on the incidence of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) among children aged 0-14 years was carried out from 1989-1993 in urban Shanghai, China. The average annual population at risk (0-14 yr) consisted of 1,401,664 children. All the cases were collected from the hospitals (primary source) and from primary and middle schools and kindergartens (second source) with independent validation of case ascertainment. There were 53 IDDM cases from the primary source, 23 from the secondary source, with a total of 58. The ascertainment corrected total number of IDDM cases was 67 by the capture-recapture method. The average crude annual incidence rate was 0.83 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.61-1.04] and ascertainment corrected incidence rate 0.96 (95% CI 0.80-1.12) per 100,000. Peak incidence fell in 1992 and in the 9 year-old group. The incidence of childhood IDDM in the urban districts of Shanghai was reconfirmed to be the lowest in the world but by comparing the results of former investigations a trend was found of increasing incidence of IDDM.

Abstract
Si-Jun-Zi-Tang is one of the widely used Chinese herbal medicines. In this study, human peripheral blood monocytes were treated in vitro with 50% hot ethanol extract of Si-Jun-Zi-Tang and its four major ingredients (Dangshen, Baizhu, Gancao and Fuling). The concentration of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in the culture supernatant at 3 hours and 18 hours were measured using an ELISA. Dangshen and Gancao significantly suppressed GM-CSF secretion in a dose-dependent manner. Baizhu showed no statistically significant effect on GM-CSF secretion 18 hours after in vitro drug-treatment. Fuling, by contrast, significantly augmented GM-CSF secretion in a dose-dependent manner after 18 hours of drug treatment. Si-Jun-Zi-Tang showed a suppressive effect on GM-CSF secretion at 3 hours but significantly augmented GM-CSF secretion when the cells were treated with 8 mg/ml of the drug for 18 hours. The data suggested that Si-Jun-Zi-Tang might modulate hematopoiesis and immune response via regulating GM-CSF secretion, and the presence of Fuling in Si-Jun-Zi-Tang could counteract the suppressive effect of Dangshen and Gancao on GM-CSF secretion.

Abstract
Forty-five male Chinese cycle haulers performed a controlled field experiment under mild winter conditions. The objective was to gain insight into factors that affect work performance. Each man hauled the same 481-kg load around a Beijing street course of 14.18 km. The experiment was a measured sample of the same work they do routinely, on the same roads, using similar human powered hauling cycles (modified only enough to carry observers and instruments). The course was completed at a mean speed of 10.4 kph and mean time of 84.2 min. While there was considerable variation in individual pace and in pace change during work, the haulers performed at relatively high output in reference to their capacities. Mean heart rate was 156.8 +/- 16.1 bpm, 83.9% of maximum. The men had average body build and were average in size for the general Chinese population (X stature = 169.7 cm) although they showed relatively high aerobic capacity (determined in laboratory tests). Performance levels during experiments appear to match habitual work patterns, and self-pacing emerged as a major behavioral finding of this research. Speed, a primary index of job performance, showed significant correlation to heart rate, VO2max, variation in windchill, self-reported health and other variables, with a multiple regression coefficient of 0.811. Similar patterns were seen for heart rate relative to speed, except that physical size, education, and other behavioral variables were also predictors.

Abstract
On experimental gastric ulcer models induced by 0.6mol/L HCl, ethyl alcohol or ligation of the pylorus, the preventive effects of unprepared oyster shell, calcined oyster shell 1(900 degrees C, 1h), calcined oyster shell 2(350 degrees C, 8h) were compared in Wistar rats. Results showed that antagonistic effects of calcined oyster shell 1 to the drug pathogenesis of peptic ulcer and the incidence of peptic ulcer after ligation of the pylorus were markedly greater.

Concha Osterae (the shell of Ostera gigas) ignited under different conditions was compared and discussed in terms of appearance features, yielding ratio of ignited product, Ca content of the ignited product, decocting rate of total component, Ca2+ content of decoction and trace element content. Furthermore, calcined Concha Osterae products obtained commercially from 6 cities of China were also compared in regard to the quality.

FeS2 changes in Pyritum during igniting process were studied systematically by comparing Pyritum ignited under different conditions in terms of S content, Fe content, yielding ratio of ignited product and appearance features. Abstract
Six groups of weanling rats were fed a low-selenium based diet containing less than 0.01 mg/kg of Se in the diet or the basal diet supplemented with five levels of selenium as selenite (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mg/kg) for at least 16 to 18 weeks. For determination of the effect of selenium on ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis in rat liver, rats of each dietary group were injected with a single dose of (5-3H)-uridine, and 3 hours later their livers were removed and subjected to cell fractionation. The radioactivities in the nuclear and cytoplasmic RNA were taken as a measure of the RNA synthesis rate. With selenium supplementation between 0.2 and 0.5 mg/kg diet, the radioactivities, amounts of RNA, as well as RNA/DNA ratios in both nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions of rat liver all increased significantly. In addition, at similar levels of selenium supplementation, statistically significant increments of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and reductions in lipid peroxide in liver were also observed. For assessment of RNA degradation, activities of ribonucleases (RNase) and RNase inhibitor in rats fed the low-selenium diet or a selenium-supplemented diet were determined. The activities of acid RNase and both free and latent alkaline RNase in liver homogenate were not affected by selenium deficiency; however, the level of RNase inhibitor present in the supernatant fraction increased significantly with selenium supplementation at 0.2 mg/kg diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
