Carbon-Supported Noble-Metal Nanoparticles for Catalytic Applications—A Review

Noble-metal nanoparticles (NMNPs), with their outstanding properties, have been arousing the interest of scientists for centuries. Although our knowledge of them is much more significant today, and we can obtain NMNPs in various sizes, shapes, and compositions, our interest in them has not waned. When talking about noble metals, gold, silver, and platinum come to mind first. Still, we cannot forget about elements belonging to the so-called platinum group, such as ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, and iridium, whose physical and chemical properties are very similar to those of platinum. It makes them highly demanded and widely used in various applications. This review presents current knowledge on the preparation of all noble metals in the form of nanoparticles and their assembling with carbon supports. We focused on the catalytic applications of these materials in the fuel-cell field. Furthermore, the influence of supporting materials on the electrocatalytic activity, stability, and selectivity of noble-metal-based catalysts is discussed.

Taguchi L25 (54) Approach for Methylene Blue Removal by Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanofiber-Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composite

A membrane composed of polyethylene terephthalate nanofiber and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PET NF-MWCNTs) composite is used to adsorb methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques are employed to study the surface properties of the adsorbent. Several parameters affecting dye adsorption (pH, MB dye initial concentration, PET NF-MWCNTs dose, and contact time) are optimized for optimal removal efficiency (R, %) by using the Taguchi L25 (54) Orthogonal Array approach. According to the ANOVA results, pH has the highest contributing percentage at 71.01%, suggesting it has the most significant impact on removal efficiency. The adsorbent dose is the second most affected (12.08%), followed by the MB dye initial concentration of 5.91%, and the least affected is the contact time (1.81%). In addition, experimental findings confirm that the Langmuir isotherm is well-fitted, suggesting a monolayer capping of MB dye on the PET-NF-MWCNT surface with a maximum adsorption capacity of 7.047 mg g−1. Also, the kinetic results are well-suited to the pseudo-second-order model. There is a good agreement between the calculated (qe) and experimental values for the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

High-Performance, Nitrogen-Doped, Carbon-Nanotube-Based Electrochemical Sensor For Vitamin D3 Detection

With the fast changing lifestyle, vitamin D deficiency is becoming extremely common. Therefore, development of economical, efficient, and fast sensors for vitamin D is the need of the hour. Carbon-based nanomaterials are extensively explored in sensing of variety of biomolecules. In the present study, an antibody-free, highly sensitive, carbon-nanotube-based, highly responsive vitamin D3 sensor is reported. Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes are utilized to overcome the limiting factor of hydrophobic character of pure carbon. The synthesized N-doped CNTs showed a specific surface area of 24 m²/g. The surface charges of vitamin D3 and the vitamin D3/NCNT complex are found to be -20 and -6.4 mV, respectively, by zeta potential measurements. The sensor is able to deliver high performance in the concentration range of 0-10 nM, with a limit of detection of 16 pM. The response study indicated the sensitivity value as 0.000495 mA/cm² nM. The sensor is also able to show a higher selectivity toward vitamin D3 in comparison to other biomolecules. The long-term stability, reproducibility, good linear range, and ultralow detection capability of the sensor are also reported.

The Exchange-Correlation Effects on the Electronic Bands of Hybrid Armchair Single-Walled Carbon Boron Nitride Nanostructure

This study investigates the effect of exchange-correlation on the electronic properties of hybridized hetero-structured nanomaterials, called single-walled carbon boron nitride nanotubes (SWCBNNT). A first principles (ab initio) method implemented in Quantum ESPRESSO codes, together with different parametrizations (local density approximation (LDA) formulated by Perdew Zunga (PZ) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) proposed by Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) and Perdew–Wang 91 (PW91)), were used in this study. It has been observed that the disappearance of interface states in the band gap was due to the discontinuity of the π–π bonds in some segments of SWCNT, which resulted in the asymmetric distribution in the two segments. This work has successfully created a band gap in SWCBNNT, where the PBE exchange-correlation functional provides a well-agreed band gap value of 1.8713 eV. Effects of orbitals on electronic properties have also been studied elaborately. It has been identified that the Py orbital gives the largest contribution to the electrical properties of our new hybrid SWCBNNT nanostructures. This study may open a new avenue for tailoring bandgap in the hybrid heterostructured nanomaterials towards practical applications with next-generation optoelectronic devices, especially in LED nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Development of polycarbonate urethane-based materials with controlled diclofenac release for cartilage replacement

Hydrogels are very promising human cartilage replacement materials since they are able to mimic its structure and properties. Besides, they can be used as platforms for drug delivery to reduce inflammatory postsurgical reactions. Polycarbonate urethane (PCU) has been used in orthopedic applications due to its long-term biocompatibility and bio-durability. In this work, PCU-based hydrogels with the ability to release an anti-inflammatory (diclofenac) were developed, for the first time, for such purpose. The materials were reinforced with different amounts of cellulose acetate (CA, 10%, 15%, and 25% w/w) or carbon nanotubes (CNT, 1% and 2% w/w) in order to improve their mechanical properties. Samples were characterized in terms of compressive and tensile mechanical behavior. It was found that 15% CA and 2% CNT reinforcement led to the best mechanical properties. Thus, these materials were further characterized in terms of morphology, wettability, and friction coefficient (CoF). Contrarily to CNTs, the addition of CA significantly increased the material's porosity. Both materials became more hydrophilic, and the CoF slightly increased for PCU + 15%CA. The materials were loaded by soaking with diclofenac, and drug release experiments were conducted. PCU, PCU + 15%CA and PCU + 2%CNT presented similar release profiles, being able to ensure a controlled release of DFN for at least 4 days. Finally, in vitro cytotoxicity tests using human chondrocytes were also performed and confirmed a high biocompatibility for the three studied materials.

Coronavirus and Carbon Nanotubes: Seeking Immunological Relationships to Discover Immunotherapeutic Possibilities

Since December 2019, the world has faced an unprecedented pandemic crisis due to a new coronavirus disease, coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), which has instigated intensive studies on prevention and treatment possibilities. Here, we investigate the relationships between the immune activation induced by three coronaviruses associated with recent outbreaks, with special attention to SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, and the immune activation induced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to understand the points of convergence in immune induction and modulation. Evidence suggests that CNTs are among the most promising materials for use as immunotherapeutic agents. Therefore, this investigation explores new possibilities of effective immunotherapies for COVID-19. This study aimed to raise interest and knowledge about the use of CNTs as immunotherapeutic agents in coronavirus treatment. Thus, we summarize the most important immunological aspects of various coronavirus infections and describe key advances and challenges in using CNTs as immunotherapeutic agents against viral infections and the activation of the immune response induced by CNTs, which can shed light on the immunotherapeutic possibilities of CNTs.

Diamine Oxidase-Conjugated Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes to Facilitate Electrode Surface Homogeneity

Carbon nanomaterials have gained significant interest over recent years in the field of electrochemistry, and they may be limited in their use due to issues with their difficulty in dispersion. Enzymes are prime components for detecting biological molecules and enabling electrochemical interactions, but they may also enhance multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) dispersion. This study evaluated a MWCNT and diamine oxidase enzyme (DAO)-functionalised screen-printed electrode (SPE) to demonstrate improved methods of MWCNT functionalisation and dispersion. MWCNT morphology and dispersion was determined using UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Carboxyl groups were introduced onto the MWCNT surfaces using acid etching. MWCNT functionalisation was carried out using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS), followed by DAO conjugation and glutaraldehyde (GA) crosslinking. Modified C-MWNCT/EDC-NHS/DAO/GA was drop cast onto SPEs. Modified and unmodified electrodes after MWCNT functionalisation were characterised using optical profilometry (roughness), water contact angle measurements (wettability), Raman spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) (vibrational modes and elemental composition, respectively). The results demonstrated that the addition of the DAO improved MWCNT homogenous dispersion and the solution demonstrated enhanced stability which remained over two days. Drop casting of C-MWCNT/EDC-NHS/DAO/GA onto carbon screen-printed electrodes increased the surface roughness and wettability. UV-Vis, SEM, Raman and EDX analysis determined the presence of carboxylated MWCNT variants from their non-carboxylated counterparts. Electrochemical analysis demonstrated an efficient electron transfer rate process and a diffusion-controlled redox process. The modification of such electrodes may be utilised for the development of biosensors which could be utilised to support a range of healthcare related fields.

A Critical Review of the Role of Carbon Nanotubes in the Progress of Next-Generation Electronic Applications

Electronic products are becoming an essential part of our daily life. There is a huge demand to produce small and portable but powerful electronic products. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have excellent electrical, mechanical and thermal properties which can be exploited to build next-generation electronics. This paper reviews different types and properties of CNTs and also presents the CNT-based electronics along with their advantage over the conventionally used products. CNT usage in electronics, such as biosensing, energy and data storage devices, is discussed. CNT-based field emission devices, which showed outstanding results are also discussed. The current challenges of CNT-based electronics and the future of CNT in electronics applications are mentioned.

Aptamer-modified biosensors to visualize neurotransmitter flux

Chemical biosensors with the capacity to continuously monitor various neurotransmitter dynamics can be powerful tools to understand complex signaling pathways in the brain. However, in vivo detection of neurochemicals is challenging for many reasons such as the rapid release and clearance of neurotransmitters in the extracellular space, or the low target analyte concentrations in a sea of interfering biomolecules. Biosensing platforms with adequate spatiotemporal resolution coupled to specific and selective receptors termed aptamers, demonstrate high potential to tackle such challenges. Herein, we review existing literature in this field. We first discuss nanoparticle-based systems, which have a simple in vitro implementation and easily interpretable results. We then examine methods employing near-infrared detection for deeper tissue imaging, hence easier translation to in vivo implementation. We conclude by reviewing live cell imaging of neurotransmitter release via aptamer-modified platforms. For each of these sensors, we discuss the associated challenges for translation to real-time in vivo neurochemical imaging. Realization of in vivo biosensors for neurotransmitters will drive future development of early prevention strategies, treatments, and therapeutics for psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases.

Heavy metal removal by biomass-derived carbon nanotubes as a greener environmental remediation: A comprehensive review

The concentrations of heavy metal ions found in waterways near industrial zones are often exceed the prescribed limits, posing a continued danger to the environment and public health. Therefore, greater attention has been devoted into finding the efficient solutions for adsorbing heavy metal ions. This review paper focuses on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from biomass and their application in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Techniques to produce CNTs, benefits of modification with various functional groups to enhance sorption uptake, effects of operating parameters, and adsorption mechanisms are reviewed. Adsorption occurs via physical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, surface complexation, and interaction between functional groups and heavy metal ions. Moreover, factors such as pH level, CNTs dosage, duration, temperature, ionic strength, and surface property of adsorbents have been identified as the common factors influencing the adsorption of heavy metals. The oxygenated functional groups initially present on the surface of the modified CNTs are responsible towards the adsorption enhancement of commonly-encountered heavy metals such as Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cr⁶⁺. Despite the recent advances in the application of CNTs in environmental clean-up and pollution treatment have been demonstrated, major obstacles of CNTs such as high synthesis cost, the agglomeration in the post-treated solutions and the secondary pollution from chemicals in the surface modification, should be critically addressed in the future studies for successful large-scale applications of CNTs.

Nanomaterials in Smart Packaging Applications: A Review

Food wastage is a critical and world-wide issue resulting from an excess of food supply, poor food storage, poor marketing, and unstable markets. Since food quality depends on consumer standards, it becomes necessary to monitor the quality to ensure it meets those standards. Embedding sensors with active nanomaterials in food packaging enables customers to monitor the quality of their food in real-time. Though there are many different sensors that can monitor food quality and safety, pH sensors and time-temperature indicators (TTIs) are the most critical metrics in indicating quality. This review showcases some of the recent progress, their importance, preconditions, and the various future needs of pH sensors and TTIs in food packaging for smart sensors in food packaging applications. In discussing these topics, this review includes the materials used to make these sensors, which vary from polymers, metals, metal-oxides, carbon-based materials; and their modes of fabrication, ranging from thin or thick film deposition methods, solution-based chemistry, and electrodeposition. By discussing the use of these materials, novel fabrication process, and problems for the two sensors, this review offers solutions to a brighter future for the use of nanomaterials for pH indicator and TTIs in food packaging applications.

Facile Fabrication of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Anatase Composite Thin Film on Quartz Glass Substrate for Translucent Conductive Photoelectrode

A single-walled carbon nanotube/anatase (SWCNT/anatase) composite thin film with a transmittance of over 70% in the visible-light region was fabricated on a quartz glass substrate by heat treating a precursor film at 500 °C in air. The precursor film was formed by spin coating a mixed solution of the titania molecular precursor and well-dispersed SWCNTs (0.075 mass%) in ethanol. The anatase crystals and Ti3+ ions in the composite thin films were determined by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The effect of the heating process on the SWCNTs was analyzed using Raman spectroscopy. The composite film showed an even surface with a scratch resistance of 4H pencil hardness, as observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The electrical resistivity and optical bandgap energy of the composite thin film with a thickness of 100 nm were 6.6 × 10-2 Ω cm and 3.4 eV, respectively, when the SWCNT content in the composite thin film was 2.9 mass%. An anodic photocurrent density of 4.2 μA cm-2 was observed under ultraviolet light irradiation (16 mW cm-2 at 365 nm) onto the composite thin film, thus showing excellent properties as a photoelectrode without conductive substrates.

Recent Insights and Multifactorial Applications of Carbon Nanotubes

Nanotechnology has undergone significant development in recent years, particularly in the fabrication of sensors with a wide range of applications. The backbone of nanotechnology is nanostructures, which are determined on a nanoscale. Nanoparticles are abundant throughout the universe and are thought to be essential building components in the process of planet creation. Nanotechnology is generally concerned with structures that are between 1 and 100 nm in at least one dimension and involves the production of materials or electronics that are that small. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are carbon-based nanomaterials that have the structure of tubes. Carbon nanotubes are often referred to as the kings of nanomaterials. The diameter of carbon is determined in nanometers. They are formed from graphite sheets and are available in a variety of colors. Carbon nanotubes have a number of characteristics, including high flexibility, good thermal conductivity, low density, and chemical stability. Carbon nanotubes have played an important part in nanotechnology, semiconductors, optical and other branches of materials engineering owing to their remarkable features. Several of the applications addressed in this review have already been developed and used to benefit people worldwide. CNTs have been discussed in several domains, including industry, construction, adsorption, sensors, silicon chips, water purifiers, and biomedical uses, to show many treatments such as injecting CNTs into kidney cancers in rats, drug delivery, and directing a near-infrared laser at the cancers. With the orderly development of research in this field, additional therapeutic modalities will be identified, mainly for dispersion and densification techniques and targeted drug delivery systems for managing and curing posterior cortical atrophy. This review discusses the characteristics of carbon nanotubes as well as therapeutic applications such as medical diagnostics and drug delivery.

Toxicology of Nanoparticles in Drug Delivery

Nanoparticles have revolutionized biomedicine especially in the field of drug delivery due to their intriguing properties such as systemic stability, level of solubility, and target site specificity. It can, however, be both beneficial and damaging depending on the properties in different environments, thus highlighting the importance of nanotoxicology studies before use in humans. Different types of nanoparticles have been used in drug delivery, and this review summarizes the recent toxicity studies of these nanoparticles. The toxicological evaluation of three widely used nanoparticles in drug delivery that are metal, lipid, and protein nanoparticles has been discussed in detail. Studies have recorded several toxic effects of various nanoparticles such as metal-based nanoparticles have been linked to increased oxidative stress and have the potential to infiltrate the cell nucleus and protein-based nanoparticles have been observed to have hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity as their adverse effects. Considering the increasing application of nanoparticles in drug delivery and the growing concerns of regulatory authorities regarding the toxicity of nanocarriers in living organisms, it requires urgent attention to identify the gap in toxicity studies. The review highlights the gap in toxicity studies and potential focus areas to overcome the existing challenges.

Carbon Nanomaterials Modified Biomimetic Dental Implants for Diabetic Patients

Dental implants are used broadly in dental clinics as the most natural-looking restoration option for replacing missing or highly diseased teeth. However, dental implant failure is a crucial issue for diabetic patients in need of dentition restoration, particularly when a lack of osseointegration and immunoregulatory incompetency occur during the healing phase, resulting in infection and fibrous encapsulation. Bio-inspired or biomimetic materials, which can mimic the characteristics of natural elements, are being investigated for use in the implant industry. This review discusses different biomimetic dental implants in terms of structural changes that enable antibacterial properties, drug delivery, immunomodulation, and osseointegration. We subsequently summarize the modification of dental implants for diabetes patients utilizing carbon nanomaterials, which have been recently found to improve the characteristics of biomimetic dental implants, including through antibacterial and anti-inflammatory capabilities, and by offering drug delivery properties that are essential for the success of dental implants.

Superior operational stability of immobilized L-asparaginase over surface-modified carbon nanotubes

L-asparaginase (ASNase, EC 3.5.1.1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the L-asparagine hydrolysis into L-aspartic acid and ammonia, being mainly applied in pharmaceutical and food industries. However, some disadvantages are associated with its free form, such as the ASNase short half-life, which may be overcome by enzyme immobilization. In this work, the immobilization of ASNase by adsorption over pristine and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was investigated, the latter corresponding to functionalized MWCNTs through a hydrothermal oxidation treatment. Different operating conditions, including pH, contact time and ASNase/MWCNT mass ratio, as well as the operational stability of the immobilized ASNase, were evaluated. For comparison purposes, data regarding the ASNase immobilization with pristine MWCNT was detailed. The characterization of the ASNase-MWCNT bioconjugate was addressed using different techniques, namely Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy. Functionalized MWCNTs showed promising results, with an immobilization yield and a relative recovered activity of commercial ASNase above 95% under the optimized adsorption conditions (pH 8, 60 min of contact and 1.5 × 10-3 g mL-1 of ASNase). The ASNase-MWCNT bioconjugate also showed improved enzyme operational stability (6 consecutive reaction cycles without activity loss), paving the way for its use in industrial processes.

Recent advances in carbon nanotubes-based biocatalysts and their applications

Enzymes have been incorporated into a wide variety of fields and industries as they catalyze many biochemical and chemical reactions. The immobilization of enzymes on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for generating nano biocatalysts with high stability and reusability is gaining great attention among researchers. Functionalized CNTs act as excellent support for effective enzyme immobilization. Depending on the application, the enzymes can be tailored using the various surface functionalization techniques on the CNTs to extricate the desirable characteristics. Aiming at the preparation of efficient, stable, and recyclable nanobiocatalysts, this review provides an overview of the methods developed to immobilize the various enzymes. Various applications of carbon nanotube-based biocatalysts in water purification, bioremediation, biosensors, and biofuel cells have been comprehensively reviewed.

Current Trends and Future Prospects of Nanotechnology in Biofuel Production

Biofuel is one of the best alternatives to petroleum-derived fuels globally especially in the current scenario, where fossil fuels are continuously depleting. Fossil-based fuels cause severe threats to the environment and human health by releasing greenhouse gases on their burning. With the several limitations in currently available technologies and associated higher expenses, producing biofuels on an industrial scale is a time-consuming operation. Moreover, processes adopted for the conversion of various feedstock to the desired product are different depending upon the various techniques and materials utilized. Nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the best solutions to the current challenges on utilization of biomass in terms of their selectivity, energy efficiency, and time management, with reduced cost involvement. Many of these methods have recently been adopted, and several NPs such as metal, magnetic, and metal oxide are now being used in enhancement of biofuel production. The unique properties of NPs, such as their design, stability, greater surface area to volume ratio, catalytic activity, and reusability, make them effective biofuel additives. In addition, nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and nanosheets have been found to be cost effective as well as stable catalysts for enzyme immobilization, thus improving biofuel synthesis. The current study gives a comprehensive overview of the use of various nanomaterials in biofuel production, as well as the major challenges and future opportunities.

Dietary Docosahexaenoic Acid as a Potential Treatment for Semi-acute and Chronic Particle-Induced Pulmonary Inflammation in Balb/c Mice

Acute and chronic inflammation are vital contributing factors to pulmonary diseases which can be triggered by exposure to occupational and man-made particles; however, there are no established treatments. One potential treatment shown to have anti-inflammatory capabilities is the dietary supplement docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid found in fish oil. DHA's anti-inflammatory mechanisms are unclear for particle-induced inflammation; therefore, this study evaluated DHA as a prophylactic treatment for semi-acute and chronic particle-induced inflammation in vivo. Balb/c mice were fed a control or 1% DHA diet and exposed to dispersion media, an inflammatory multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), or crystalline silica (SiO₂) either once (semi-acute) or once a week for 4 weeks (chronic). The hypothesis was that DHA will decrease pulmonary inflammatory markers in response to particle-induced inflammation. Results indicated that DHA had a trending anti-inflammatory effect in mice exposed to MWCNT. There was a general decrease in inflammatory signals within the lung lavage fluid and upregulation of M2c macrophage gene expression in the spleen tissue. In contrast, mice exposed to SiO₂ while on the DHA diet significantly increased most inflammatory markers. However, DHA stabilized the phagolysosomal membrane upon prolonged treatment. This indicated that DHA treatment may depend upon certain inflammatory particle exposures as well as the length of the exposure.

Carbon nanomaterial properties help to enhance xylanase production from recombinant Kluyveromyces lactis through a cell immobilization method

Carbon nanomaterials, due to their catalytic activity and high surface area, have potential as cell immobilization supports to increase the production of xylanase. Recombinant Kluyveromyces lactis used for xylanase production was integrated into a polymeric gel network with carbon nanomaterials. Carbon nanomaterials were pretreated before cell immobilization with hydrochloric acid (HCl) treatment and glutaraldehyde (GA) crosslinking, which contributes to cell immobilization performance. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) were further screened using a Plackett-Burman experimental design. Cell loading and agar concentration were the most important factors in xylanase production with low cell leakage. Under optimized conditions, xylanase production was increased by more than 400% compared to free cells. Immobilized cell material containing such high cell densities may exhibit new and unexplored beneficial properties because the cells comprise a large fraction of the component. The use of carbon nanomaterials as a cell immobilization support along with the entrapment method successfully enhances the production of xylanase, providing a new route to improved bioprocessing, particularly for the production of enzymes. Rapid and delayed effects of single-walled carbon nanotubes in glioma cells

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) demonstrate a strong potential as an optically activated theranostic nano-agent. However, using SWCNTs in theranostics still requires revealing mechanisms of the SWCNT-mediated effects on cellular functions. Even though rapid and delayed cellular responses can differ significantly and may lead to undesirable consequences, understanding of these mechanisms is still incomplete. We demonstrate that introducing short (150-250 nm) SWCNTs into C6 rat glioma cells leads to SWCNT-driven effects that show pronounced time dependence. Accumulation of SWCNTs is carried out due to endocytosis with modification of the actin cytoskeleton but not accompanied with autophagy. Its initial stage launches a rapid cellular response via significantly heightened mitochondrial membrane potential and superoxide anion radical production, satisfying the cell demand of energy for SWCNT transfer inside the cytoplasm. In the long term, SWCNTs agglomerate to micron-sized structures surrounded by highly active mitochondria having parameters return to control values. SWCNTs postponed effects are also manifested themselves in the suppression of the cell proliferative activity with further restoration after five passages. These results demonstrate relative cellular inertness and safety of SWCNTs eliminating possible side effects caused by optically activated theranostic applications.

Synthesis, characterization and evaluation of resveratrol-loaded functionalized carbon nanotubes as a novel delivery system in radiation enteropathy

Radiation-induced enteropathy is a major clinical challenge during radiotherapy. Resveratrol displays beneficial pharmacological activities; however, low oral bioavailability limits its effectiveness. This study aims at preparing methacrylic acid (MAAc) functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-MAAc) as carriers for pH triggered controlled release of resveratrol in an effort to improve the drug therapeutic potential. MWCNTs-MAAc were prepared using radiation technique and then characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. In vitro drug release profile at different pH values was analyzed. Furthermore, the designed RES-MWCNTs-MAAc nanocomplex was evaluated against radiation-induced enteropathy in rats. Oral administration of RES-MWCNTs-MAAc restored colonic redox state and elevated antioxidant enzymes activities glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and reduced colonic inflammatory mediators tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interferone-γ (IFN-γ) contents in addition to declining the intrinsic apoptotic pathway as evidenced by down-regulation of Bax and caspase-3 proteins expression accompanied by up-regulation of Bcl-2 protein expression. RES-MWCNTs-MAAc was more efficient than free resveratrol due to the delivery system that allowed prolonged resveratrol release at target site. Thus, this formulation could serve as a beneficial anti-inflammatory approach for patients during radiotherapy.

Mechanical, Thermal, Electrical Characteristics and EMI Absorption Shielding Effectiveness of Rubber Composites Based on Ferrite and Carbon Fillers

In this work, rubber composites were fabricated by incorporation of manganese-zinc ferrite alone and in combination with carbon-based fillers into acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber. Electromagnetic parameters and electromagnetic interference (EMI) absorption shielding effectiveness of composite materials were examined in the frequency range 1 MHz-3 GHz. The influence of ferrite and fillers combination on thermal characteristics and mechanical properties of composites was investigated as well. The results revealed that ferrite imparts absorption shielding efficiency to the composites in tested frequency range. The absorption shielding effectiveness and absorption maxima of ferrite filled composites shifted to lower frequencies with increasing content of magnetic filler. The combination of carbon black and ferrite also resulted in the fabrication of efficient EMI shields. However, the EMI absorption shielding effectiveness was lower, which can be ascribed to higher electrical conductivity and higher permittivity of those materials. The highest conductivity and permittivity of composites filled with combination of carbon nanotubes and ferrite was responsible for the lowest absorption shielding effectiveness within the examined frequency range. The results also demonstrated that combination of ferrite with carbon-based fillers resulted in the enhancement of thermal conductivity and improvement of mechanical properties.

Contemporary Enzyme-Based Methods for Recombinant Proteins In Vitro Phosphorylation

Phosphorylation is a reversible, enzyme-controlled posttranslational process affecting approximately one-third of all proteins in eukaryotic cells at any given time. Any deviation in the degree and/or site of phosphorylation leads to an abnormal conformation of proteins, resulting in a decline or loss of their function. Knowledge of phosphorylation-related pathways is essential for understanding the understanding of the disease pathogenesis and for the design of new therapeutic strategies. Recent availability of various kinases at an affordable price differs in activity, specificity, and stability and provides the opportunity of studying and modulating this reaction in vitro. We can exploit this knowledge for other applications. There is an enormous potential to produce fully decorated and active recombinant proteins, either for biomedical or cosmetic applications. Closely related is the possibility to exploit current achievements and develop new safe and efficacious vaccines, drugs, and immunomodulators. In this review, we outlined the current enzyme-based possibilities for in vitro phosphorylation of peptides and recombinant proteins and the added value that immobilized kinases provide.

An Update Report on the Biosafety and Potential Toxicity of Fullerene-Based Nanomaterials toward Aquatic Animals

Fullerene molecules are composed of carbon in the form of a hollow sphere, tube, or ellipsoid. Since their discovery in 1985, they have gained a lot of attention in many science fields. The unique carbon cage structure of fullerene provides immense scope for derivatization, rendering potential for various industrial applications. Thus, the prospective applications of fullerenes have led to assorted fullerene derivatives. In addition, their unique chemical structure also eases them to be synthesized through various kinds of conjugating techniques, where fullerene can be located either on the backbone or the branch chain. In this review, we have compiled the toxicity and biosafety aspects of fullerene in aquatic organisms since the frequent use of fullerene is likely to come in contact and interact with the aquatic environment and aquatic organisms. According to the current understanding, waterborne exposure to fullerene-based nanomaterials indeed triggers toxicities at cellular, organic, molecular, and neurobehavioral levels.

Modeling the Conductivity Response to NO2 Gas of Films Based on MWCNT Networks

This work proposes a model describing the dynamic behavior of sensing films based on functionalized MWCNT networks in terms of conductivity when exposed to time-variable concentrations of NO2 and operating with variable working temperatures. To test the proposed model, disordered networks of MWCNTs functionalized with COOH and Au nanoparticles were exploited. The model is derived from theoretical descriptions of the electronic transport in the nanotube network, of the NO2 chemisorption reaction and of the interaction of these two phenomena. The model is numerically implemented and then identified by estimating all the chemical/physical quantities involved and acting as parameters, through a model fitting procedure. Satisfactory results were obtained in the fitting process, and the identified model was used to further the analysis of the MWCNT sensing in dynamical conditions.

Multiple Particle Tracking Detects Changes in Brain Extracellular Matrix and Predicts Neurodevelopmental Age

Brain extracellular matrix (ECM) structure mediates many aspects of neural development and function. Probing structural changes in brain ECM could thus provide insights into mechanisms of neurodevelopment, the loss of neural function in response to injury, and the detrimental effects of pathological aging and neurological disease. We demonstrate the ability to probe changes in brain ECM microstructure using multiple particle tracking (MPT). We performed MPT of colloidally stable polystyrene nanoparticles in organotypic rat brain slices collected from rats aged 14-70 days old. Our analysis revealed an inverse relationship between nanoparticle diffusive ability in the brain extracellular space and age. Additionally, the distribution of effective ECM pore sizes in the cortex shifted to smaller pores throughout development. We used the raw data and features extracted from nanoparticle trajectories to train a boosted decision tree capable of predicting chronological age with high accuracy. Collectively, this work demonstrates the utility of combining MPT with machine learning for measuring changes in brain ECM structure and predicting associated complex features such as chronological age. This will enable further understanding of the roles brain ECM play in development and aging and the specific mechanisms through which injuries cause aberrant neuronal function. Additionally, this approach has the potential to develop machine learning models capable of detecting the presence of injury or indicating the extent of injury based on changes in the brain microenvironment microstructure.

Innovations in nanoscience for the sustainable development of food and agriculture with implications on health and environment

A rapid increase in world population is leading to the rise in global demand of food and agriculture (agri) products. Nanotechnology and its applications have emerged as one of the most pioneering and promising technology for transforming conventional food and agri industries, with the aim of sustainable farming, improving the food security, quality and safety which could revolutionize the food and agri industries. Current developments in nanotechnology have led to the new paths progressively and bringing the radical changes the way food is perceived throughout the farming, transportation, processing, packaging, storage, monitoring and consumption. This review brings the current updates on novel nanomaterials in food and agri industries. Emphasis is given on the importance of nanotechnological applications, offering complete food solutions from farm to fork; including nutraceutical and functional foods, improving bioavailability, efficiency, nutritional status, nano-additives, food texture, color, taste and packaging. Agricultural sector also witnessed several nano-based products, such as nano-fertilizer, nano-pesticide, nano growth promoters and many more for the development of sustainable farming and crop improvement. Despite of numerous advantages of nanotechnology, there are still toxicity challenges, safety concerns, which needs to be addressed and demands transformations in regulatory policies. Rapid development is projected to transform several foods and agri sectors, with rapid increase in market stake and investment. Government agencies, private research centers as well as academicians are also coming together to explore the benefits of nanotechnology to improve food scarcity in the coming years.

Advancing of Cellular Signaling Pathways in Respiratory Diseases Using Nanocarrier Based Drug Delivery Systems

Cell Signaling pathways form an integral part of our existence that allows the cells to comprehend a stimulus and respond back. Such reactions to external cues from the environment are required and are essential to regulate the normal functioning of our body. Abnormalities in the system arise when there are errors developed in these signals, resulting in a complication or a disease. Presently, respiratory diseases contribute to being the third leading cause of morbidity worldwide. According to the current statistics, over 339 million people are asthmatic, 65 million are suffering from COPD, 2.3 million are lung cancer patients and 10 million are tuberculosis patients. This toll of statistics with chronic respiratory diseases leaves a heavy burden on society and the nation's annual health expenditure. Hence, a better understanding of the processes governing these cellular pathways will enable us to treat and manage these deadly respiratory diseases effectively. Moreover, it is important to comprehend the synergy and interplay of the cellular signaling pathways in respiratory diseases, which will enable us to explore and develop suitable strategies for targeted drug delivery. This review, in particular, focuses on the major respiratory diseases and further provides an in-depth discussion on the various cell signaling pathways that are involved in the pathophysiology of respiratory diseases. Moreover, the review also analyses the defining concepts about advanced nano-drug delivery systems involving various nanocarriers and propose newer prospects to minimize the current challenges faced by researchers and formulation scientists.

Ligninolytic activity of the Penicillium chrysogenum and Pleurotus ostreatus fungi involved in the biotransformation of synthetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes modify its toxicity

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are of multidisciplinary scientific interest due to their exceptional physicochemical properties and a broad range of applications. However, they are considered potentially toxic nanoparticles when they accumulate in the environment. Given their ability to oxidize resistant polymers, mycorremediation with lignocellulolytic fungi are suggested as biological alternatives to the mineralization of MWCNTs. Hence, this study involves the ability of two fungi specie to MWCNTs biotransformation by laccase and peroxidases induction and evaluation in vivo of its toxicity using Caenorhabditis elegans worms as a model. Results showed that the fungi Penicillium chrysogenum and Pleurotus ostreatus were capable to grow on media with MWCNTs supplemented with glucose or lignin. Activities of lignin-peroxidase, manganese-peroxidase, and laccase in cultures of both fungi were induced by MWCNTs. Raman, FTIR spectroscopy, HR-TEM, and TGA analyses of the residue from the cultures of both fungi revealed structural modifications on the surface of MWCNTs and its amount diminished, correlating the MWCNTs structural modifications with the laccase-peroxidase activities in the fungal cultures. Results indicate that the degree of toxicity of MWCNTs on the C. elegans model was enhanced by the structure modification associated with the fungal ligninolytic activity. The toxic effect of MWCNTs on the in vivo model of worms reveals the increment of reactive oxygen species as a mechanism of toxicity. Findings indicate that the MWCNTs can be subject in nature to biotransformation processes such as the fungal metabolism, which contribute to modify their toxicity properties on susceptible organisms and contributing to environmental elimination.

Recent Advances in Nanotechnology with Nano-Phytochemicals: Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Implications in Cancer Progression

Biocompatible nanoparticles (NPs) containing polymers, lipids (liposomes and micelles), dendrimers, ferritin, carbon nanotubes, quantum dots, ceramic, magnetic materials, and gold/silver have contributed to imaging diagnosis and targeted cancer therapy. However, only some NP drugs, including Doxil^® (liposome-encapsulated doxorubicin), Abraxane^® (albumin-bound paclitaxel), and Oncaspar^® (PEG-Asparaginase), have emerged on the pharmaceutical market to date. By contrast, several phytochemicals that were found to be effective in cultured cancer cells and animal studies have not shown significant efficacy in humans due to poor bioavailability and absorption, rapid clearance, resistance, and toxicity. Research to overcome these drawbacks by using phytochemical NPs remains in the early stages of clinical translation. Thus, in the current review, we discuss the progress in nanotechnology, research milestones, the molecular mechanisms of phytochemicals encapsulated in NPs, and clinical implications. Several challenges that must be overcome and future research perspectives are also described.

Therapeutic treatment of dietary docosahexaenoic acid for particle-induced pulmonary inflammation in Balb/c mice

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN

The omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been reported to suppress inflammation. Pulmonary inflammation can be directly linked to exposure of various occupational and man-made particles leading to pulmonary diseases. Therapeutic treatments are lacking for particle-induced pulmonary inflammation. These studies evaluated DHA as a therapeutic treatment for semi-acute and chronic particle-induced pulmonary inflammation.

METHODS

Balb/c mice were oropharyngeal instilled with hydrophobic multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) or hydrophilic crystalline silica (SiO2) either as one instillation (semi-acute) or once a week for 4 weeks (chronic). One week later, the mice were placed on either a control or 1% DHA-containing diet for 3 weeks (semi-acute) or 12 weeks (chronic). Mice were assessed for inflammatory signaling within the lung lavage fluid, impact on phagolysosomal membrane permeability, shifts of macrophage phenotype gene expression (M1, M2a, M2b, and M2c), and pulmonary histopathology.

RESULTS

DHA increased pulmonary inflammatory markers and lung pathology when mice were exposed to SiO2. There were trending decreases of inflammatory markers for MWCNT-exposed mice with DHA treatment, however, mostly not statistically significant.

CONCLUSION

The anti-inflammatory benefits of DHA treatment depend upon the type of inflammatory particle, magnitude of inflammation, and duration of treatment.

Docosahexaenoic acid impacts macrophage phenotype subsets and phagolysosomal membrane permeability with particle exposure

Inhalation of particles results in pulmonary inflammation; however, treatments are currently lacking. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory capabilities. The impact of DHA on particle-induced inflammation is unclear; therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the hypothesis that DHA downregulates macrophage inflammatory responses by altering phagolysosomal membrane permeability (LMP) and shifting macrophage phenotype. Isolated Balb/c alveolar macrophages (AM) were polarized into M1, M2a, M2b, or M2c phenotypes in vitro, treated with DHA, and exposed to a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNCT) or crystalline silica (SiO₂). Results showed minimal cytotoxicity, robust effects for silica particle uptake, and LMP differences between phenotypes. Docosahexaenoic acid prevented these effects to the greatest extent in M2c phenotype. To determine if DHA affected inflammation similarly in vivo, Balb/c mice were placed on a control or 1% DHA diet for 3 weeks, instilled with the same particles, and assessed 24 hr following instillation. Data demonstrated that in contrast to in vitro findings, DHA increased pulmonary inflammation and LMP. These results suggest that pulmonary responses in vivo may not necessarily be predicted from single-cell responses in vitro.

A Review on Polymer Nanocomposites and Their Effective Applications in Membranes and Adsorbents for Water Treatment and Gas Separation

Globally, environmental challenges have been recognised as a matter of concern. Among these challenges are the reduced availability and quality of drinking water, and greenhouse gases that give rise to change in climate by entrapping heat, which result in respirational illness from smog and air pollution. Globally, the rate of demand for the use of freshwater has outgrown the rate of population increase; as the rapid growth in town and cities place a huge pressure on neighbouring water resources. Besides, the rapid growth in anthropogenic activities, such as the generation of energy and its conveyance, release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, warming the planet. Polymer nanocomposite has played a significant role in finding solutions to current environmental problems. It has found interest due to its high potential for the reduction of gas emission, and elimination of pollutants, heavy metals, dyes, and oil in wastewater. The revolution of integrating developed novel nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers and activated carbon, in polymers, have instigated revitalizing and favourable inventive nanotechnologies for the treatment of wastewater and gas separation. This review discusses the effective employment of polymer nanocomposites for environmental utilizations. Polymer nanocomposite membranes for wastewater treatment and gas separation were reviewed together with their mechanisms. The use of polymer nanocomposites as an adsorbent for toxic metals ions removal and an adsorbent for dye removal were also discussed, together with the mechanism of the adsorption process. Patents in the utilization of innovative polymeric nanocomposite membranes for environmental utilizations were discussed.

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes-Based Sensors for Strain Sensing Applications

The use of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-based sensors for strain-strain applications is showcased in this paper. Extensive use of MWCNTs has been done for the fabrication and implementation of flexible sensors due to their enhanced electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. These nanotubes have been deployed both in pure and composite forms for obtaining highly efficient sensors in terms of sensitivity, robustness, and longevity. Among the wide range of applications that MWCNTs have been exploited for, strain-sensing has been one of the most popular ones due to the high mechanical flexibility of these carbon allotropes. The MWCNT-based sensors have been able to deduce a broad spectrum of macro- and micro-scaled tensions through structural changes. This paper highlights some of the well-approved conjugations of MWCNTs with different kinds of polymers and other conductive nanomaterials to form the electrodes of the strain sensors. It also underlines some of the measures that can be taken in the future to improve the quality of these MWCNT-based sensors for strain-related applications.

Gold-Platinum Core-Shell Nanoparticles with Thiolated Polyaniline and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for the Simultaneous Voltammetric Determination of Six Drug Molecules

In this proof-of-concept study, a novel nanocomposite of the thiolated polyaniline (tPANI), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and gold–platinum core-shell nanoparticles (Au@Pt) (tPANI-Au@Pt-MWCNT) was synthesized and utilized to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for simultaneous voltammetric determination of six over-the-counter (OTC) drug molecules: ascorbic acid (AA), levodopa (LD), acetaminophen (AC), diclofenac (DI), acetylsalicylic acid (AS) and caffeine (CA). The nanocomposite (tPANI-Au@Pt-MWCNT) was characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Using the sensor (GCE-tPANI-Au@Pt-MWCNT) in connection with differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the calibration plots were determined to be linear up to 570.0, 60.0, 60.0, 115.0, 375.0 and 520.0 µM with limit of detection (LOD) of 1.5, 0.25, 0.15, 0.2, 2.0, and 5.0 µM for AA, LD, AC, DI, AS and CA, respectively. The nanocomposite-modified sensor was successfully used for the determination of these redox-active compounds in commercially available OTC products such as energy drinks, cream and tablets with good recovery yields ranging from 95.48 ± 0.53 to 104.1 ± 1.63%. We envisage that the electrochemical sensor provides a promising platform for future applications towards the detection of redox-active drug molecules in pharmaceutical quality control studies and forensic investigations.

A Review: Electrode and Packaging Materials for Neurophysiology Recording Implants

To date, a wide variety of neural tissue implants have been developed for neurophysiology recording from living tissues. An ideal neural implant should minimize the damage to the tissue and perform reliably and accurately for long periods of time. Therefore, the materials utilized to fabricate the neural recording implants become a critical factor. The materials of these devices could be classified into two broad categories: electrode materials as well as packaging and substrate materials. In this review, inorganic (metals and semiconductors), organic (conducting polymers), and carbon-based (graphene and carbon nanostructures) electrode materials are reviewed individually in terms of various neural recording devices that are reported in recent years. Properties of these materials, including electrical properties, mechanical properties, stability, biodegradability/bioresorbability, biocompatibility, and optical properties, and their critical importance to neural recording quality and device capabilities, are discussed. For the packaging and substrate materials, different material properties are desired for the chronic implantation of devices in the complex environment of the body, such as biocompatibility and moisture and gas hermeticity. This review summarizes common solid and soft packaging materials used in a variety of neural interface electrode designs, as well as their packaging performances. Besides, several biopolymers typically applied over the electrode package to reinforce the mechanical rigidity of devices during insertion, or to reduce the immune response and inflammation at the device-tissue interfaces are highlighted. Finally, a benchmark analysis of the discussed materials and an outlook of the future research trends are concluded.

High Yield Super-Hydrophobic Carbon Nanomaterials Using Cobalt/Iron Co-Catalyst Impregnated on Powder Activated Carbon

Synthesis of super-hydrophobic carbonaceous materials is gaining a broader interest by the research community due to its versatile application in separation processes, special coating technologies, and membrane distillation. Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) may exhibit stable super-hydrophobic character due to their unique physio-chemical features which can be further controlled based on customer requirements by optimizing the process variables. This study deals with the application of a bimetallic catalyst composed of iron (Fe) and cobalt (Co) to synthesize CNMs from powder activated carbon as a precursor. The process parameters were optimized to ensure super-hydrophobic surfaces. Chemical vapor deposition was utilized for the growth of carbon nanomaterials. The impact of input variables on the desired output of yield and contact angle was analyzed. The chemical vapor deposition process was optimized using the response surface methodology based on Box-Behnken design. The proportion of the catalysts and reaction time were the three input explanatory variables whereas the desired response variables were selected as the carbon yield (CY) and contact angle (CA). The synthesized super-hydrophobic materials were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and contact angle analysis. The comprehensive statistical study of the results led to a significant model and optimization. The highest CY (351%) and CA (173°) were obtained at the optimal loading of 2.5% Fe and 2% Mo with a reaction time of 60 min. The images obtained from FESEM and TEM revealed the presence of two types of CNMs including carbon nanofibers and multiwall carbon nanotubes. Thermogravimetric analysis was carried out to observe the temperature degradation profile of the synthesized sample. Raman spectroscopic analysis was also used to observe the proportion of ordered and disordered carbon content inside the synthesized samples. The improved catalytic super-hydrophobic carbon nanostructured materials production process proposed by this study assures the stability and high yield of the product.

Carbon nanotube materials for electrocardiography

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as 1D nanomaterials of excellent physicochemical characteristics bring hope to compete and eventually conquer traditional solutions in electrocardiography - one of the most powerful and non-invasive diagnostic tools in cardiac disorders. Our review tracks (from 2008) the development of CNTs as critical components in the systems where CNTs serve mainly as electroconductive fillers hence enable recording electrocardiographs (ECG). The characteristics of the CNT-based ECG systems - mainly to-skin electrodes and in a few cases wiring - covers their electrical and mechanical performance (adhesivity, flexibility, elasticity) and qualitative biocompatibility. By comprehensive analysis of the state-of-art in this field, we intend to indicate the most important challenges for the CNT (and other) materials to be applied in scale-up solution for electrocardiography in the near future.

Towards 3D self-assembled rolled multiwall carbon nanotube structures by spontaneous peel off

Controlling the 3D assembly of individual nanomaterials can be a challenging task. However, it opens up opportunities for the production of increasingly complex nanostructures. Unusual rolled multiwall carbon nanotube structures are synthesized here by simply inducing a change of precursor composition during the growth of multiwall carbon nanotube forests. The multiwall carbon nanotube structures are comprised of nitrogen-doped and undoped sections, and are obtained via a detailed peel off and roll mechanism. These results open new doors for the development of increasingly complex nanostructures.

The recent advancement of low-dimensional nanostructured materials for drug delivery and drug sensing application: A brief review

In this review article, we have presented a detailed analysis of the recent advancement of quantum mechanical calculations in the applications of the low-dimensional nanomaterials (LDNs) into biomedical fields like biosensors and drug delivery systems development. Biosensors play an essential role for many communities, e.g. law enforcing agencies to sense illicit drugs, medical communities to remove overdosed medications from the human and animal body etc. Besides, drug delivery systems are theoretically being proposed for many years and experimentally found to deliver the drug to the targeted sites by reducing the harmful side effects significantly. In current COVID-19 pandemic, biosensors can play significant roles, e.g. to remove experimental drugs during the human trials if they show any unwanted adverse effect etc. where the drug delivery systems can be potentially applied to reduce the side effects. But before proceeding to these noble and expensive translational research works, advanced theoretical calculations can provide the possible outcomes with considerable accuracy. Hence in this review article, we have analyzed how theoretical calculations can be used to investigate LDNs as potential biosensor devices or drug delivery systems. We have also made a very brief discussion on the properties of biosensors or drug delivery systems which should be investigated for the biomedical applications and how to calculate them theoretically. Finally, we have made a detailed analysis of a large number of recently published research works where theoretical calculations were used to propose different LDNs for bio-sensing and drug delivery applications.
