Abstract
Background: The hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis coordinates brain development and postdevelopmental function. Thyroid hormone (TH) variations, even within the normal range, have been associated with the risk of developing common psychiatric disorders, although the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Methods: To get new insight into the potentially shared mechanisms underlying thyroid dysfunction and psychiatric disorders, we performed a comprehensive analysis of multiple phenotypic and genotypic databases. We investigated the relationship of thyroid disorders with depression, bipolar disorder (BIP), and anxiety disorders (ANXs) in 497,726 subjects from U.K. Biobank. We subsequently investigated genetic correlations between thyroid disorders, thyrotropin (TSH), and free thyroxine (fT4) levels, with the genome-wide factors that predispose to psychiatric disorders. Finally, the observed global genetic correlations were furthermore pinpointed to specific local genomic regions. Results: Hypothyroidism was positively associated with an increased risk of major depressive disorder (MDD; OR = 1.31, p = 5.29 × 10-89), BIP (OR = 1.55, p = 0.0038), and ANX (OR = 1.16, p = 6.22 × 10-8). Hyperthyroidism was associated with MDD (OR = 1.11, p = 0.0034) and ANX (OR = 1.34, p = 5.99 × 10-⁶). Genetically, strong coheritability was observed between thyroid disease and both major depressive (rg = 0.17, p = 2.7 × 10-⁴) and ANXs (rg = 0.17, p = 6.7 × 10-⁶). This genetic correlation was particularly strong at the major histocompatibility complex locus on chromosome 6 (p < 10-⁵), but further analysis showed that other parts of the genome also contributed to this global effect. Importantly, neither TSH nor fT4 levels were genetically correlated with mood disorders. Conclusions: Our findings highlight an underlying association between autoimmune hypothyroidism and mood disorders, which is not mediated through THs and in which autoimmunity plays a prominent role. While these findings could shed new light on the potential ineffectiveness of treating (minor) variations in thyroid function in psychiatric disorders, further research is needed to identify the exact underlying molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
The alterations of circulating adipocytokines have been reported in thyroid diseases or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but such data in T2DM coincident with clinical and subclinical thyroid-dysfunctions are limited, and remain to be investigated. We studied the changes in serum chemerin, resisitin and visfatin in T2DM patients with thyroid dysfunctions, and their association with inflammatory and insulin resistance-markers. A total of 272 female and male Iranian participants were selected and divided into six groups: the euthyroid group, T2DM, T2DM coincident with clinical and sub clinical hypothyroidism (SC-HO, and C-HO), and T2DM coincident with clinical and sub clinical hyperthyroidism (SC-HR, C-HR).Demographic characteristics, serum levels of adipocytokines, thyroid hormones, inflammatory factors (IL1-β, IL-6 and CRP) and insulin resistance-markers were determined in all participants. T2DM patients with clinical thyroid dysfunctions showed higher levels of circulating resistin, visfatin, chemerin and inflammatory factors, compared with the T2DM group and T2DM coexisted with subclinical thyroid diseases. No significant differences were observed in circulating adipocytokines and inflammatory markers between T2DM coexisting with subclinical thyroid diseases and those without thyroid dysfunctions. Our results revealed that clinical thyroid dysfunction in T2DM patients was associated with elevated levels of circulating resistin, chemerin, visfatin and inflammatory factors, while no such alteration was detected in T2DM coincident with subclinical thyroid dysfunction.

Abstract
Background Hypothyroidism can predispose systolic and diastolic cardiac dysfunction, increased peripheral vascular resistance, endothelial dysfunction, altered coagulopathy, and dyslipidemia resulting in atherosclerosis. Thyroid hormones can influence homocysteine metabolism by regulating the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (M THR). So, this study aimed to compare the markers homocysteine, high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and Atherogenic Indices (AI) between newly diagnosed hypothyroid and euthyroid premenopausal women. Methods 80 Female patients between 20 and 45 years were enrolled in this study and were equally divided into cases and controls group. Laboratory tests included: i) Serum T3, T4, TSH was measured using electrochemiluminescence, ii) lipid profile, homocysteine, and hs-CRP were measured for all the participants. Atherogenic indices: Castelli risk indices I&II, Atherogenic coefficient (AEC), and Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) were calculated using formulas. A comparison between the study groups was made by using the Independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results The hypothyroid group had significantly higher levels of homocysteine (p= 0.014), and hs-CRP (hs-CRP> 3.0 mg/L, 70% of participants have intermediate to high risk for a cardiovascular event) and elevated BMI compared to participants in the euthyroid group. Atherogenic indices (p< 0.001) was significantly increased in the hypothyroid participants' group. TC, TG , and LDL were significantly elevated in the hypothyroid group but did not show any association with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusions Premenopausal women with hypothyroidism have a greater predisposition for cardiovascular disease compared to euthyroid.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim: To investigate the peculiarities of immunological changes and their relationship with colon dysbiosis in obese patients with HT. PATIENTS AND METHODS Materials and methods: The examined patients included 48 patients with HT and obesity (group 1) and 34 patients with obesity (group 2). Patients under¬went fecal analysis for dysbiosis. The levels of complement, namely C3 and C4 and the concentration of immunoglobulins (IgA, Ig M, IgG) were determined by means of chromogenic analysis. RESULTS Results: During the clinical examination, constipation and flatulence were more often diagnosed in patients of group I (58.3% and 66.7%, respectively - p<0.001), while in patients of group 2 with increased BMI without thyroid dysfunction, a tendency to diarrhea was more often found, accompanied by periodic pain along the colon (50.0% and 32.3% of patients, respectively - p<0.001). Changes in the immunological status of patients in both groups were found. In patients with HT and increase of BMI an increase in serum IgA, IgM, IgG levels were found. An increase in serum immunoglobulins (A, M and G) was also diagnosed in group 2 of examined patients too. CONCLUSION Conclusions: 1. In patients with obesity decrease in the concentration of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and increase in the number of Staphylococcus, Clostridium, Proteus and Klebsiella were detected, which is more pronounced in patients with a combination of obesity and hypothyroidism. 2. Impairment distinct of immu¬nological status in patients with hypothyroidism and obesity was diagnosed, which was manifested by increased levels of immunoglobulins, namly (A, M, G), as well as a decrease in blood serum complements (C3, C4). 3. The level of IgA, G directly depends on the decrese of Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and increse of Staphylococcus, Clostridium and Klebsiella in patients with obesity, which is more pronounced in patients with a combination of obesity and hypothyroidism.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is a biochemical diagnosis made when a serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is ele-vated with circulating thyroid hormone levels within their reference ranges. AIM OF THE STUDY Aim of our prospective non-randomized study was to evaluate the course of SH. MATERIAL AND METHODS All patients with suspicion of SH referred to the Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic between 2014 and 2018 were recruited to prospective study. RESULTS A total of 130 patients with SH were recruited for this study. Thirty-five (26.9%) patients were followed up without levothy-roxine (L-T4) (SH-T0 group) and therapy with L-T4 was randomly introduced in 95/130 (73.1%) SH children (SH-T1 group). We did not find statistical differences in hSDS and BMI Z-score between the SH-T0 and SH-T1 groups (p = 0.761 and p = 0.843, respectively). Introducing L-T4 in patients with short stature did not affect the linear growth at the end of FU ex-pressed as hSDS. OH developed in six children (6.3%) in the SH-T1 group. After conducting a multivariate logistic regres-sion, we found that the baseline TSH concentration and BMI Z-score are possible predictors of OH. CONSLUSIONS Our study confirmed a low risk of progression of SH to overt hypothyroidism. The majority of patients remains SH or resolved for nor-mal thyroid function. The L-T4 therapy did not effect on linear growth and body weight. The main predictor of worsening to hypothyroidism were a higher TSH level and Z-score BMI.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association between metabolic phenotypes and thyroid function has not yet been established; therefore, this study examined whether different metabolic phenotypes are associated with the development of hypothyroidism. METHODS Study participants were selected from the Tehran Thyroid Study (TTS). A total of 3338 euthyroid adults were included and categorized into four obesity phenotype groups: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically healthy obese (MHO), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW), and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO). The participants were assessed at baseline and during three follow-up studies at three-year intervals. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between metabolic phenotypes and the development of hypothyroidism. RESULTS In the total population, the chi-square test was only significant (P=0.008) in 3rd year with a higher prevalence of hypothyroidism in the MUNW phenotype, followed by MHO, MUO, and MHNW. Moreover, in the 3rd and 9th years of follow-up, hypothyroidism was more prevalent in MUO only in male subjects (P=0.002 and 0.035, respectively). In the unadjusted model, the MHO phenotype increased the odds of hypothyroidism compared with the MHNW phenotype (OR=1.51; 95% CI=1.04, 2.18; P-value=0.031). After adjusting for confounding factors, the odds of hypothyroidism were higher in the MUNW (OR=1.86; 95% CI=1.17, 2.96; P-value=0.008), MHO (OR=1.71; 95% CI=1.09, 2.67; P-value=0.018), and MUO (OR=1.64; 95% CI=1.03, 2.62; P-value=0.036) phenotypes than in the MHNW group. The MUNW phenotype increased the risk of hypothyroidism compared to MHNW, only in males. However, in females, the MHO phenotype increased the risk of hypothyroidism compared to MHNW. CONCLUSION Both obesity and metabolic abnormalities are associated with hyperthyroidism. Healthy metabolic and weight maintenance were associated with a lower risk of hypothyroidism in males and females.

Abstract
Background Increased body mass index (BMI) and metabolic abnormalities both have potential associations with thyroid disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between different metabolic phenotypes of obesity and thyroid disorders using nationwide data from China. Methods Data were collected from a cross-sectional survey called the Thyroid Disorders, Iodine Status, and Diabetes Epidemiological Survey conducted between 2015 and 2017 in China. A total of 69007 subjects aged 18 years or older were defined and divided into six groups on the basis of BMI and metabolic health status: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW), metabolically healthy overweight (MHOW), metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). We estimated the odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals [CIs] for different thyroid disorders according to metabolic phenotypes using multivariate logistic regression models. Results In our study, we found that the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism was almost as high in the MUNW group as in the MUO group, the prevalence of overt hyperthyroidism was highest in the MUNW group and Graves' disease was highest in the MHO group. Our results also suggested that the prevalence of goiter and thyroid nodules increased with increased BMI values and that the MUO group had the highest incidence. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that subjects with unhealthy metabolic phenotypes (MUNW, MUOW, and MUO) all had an increased risk of subclinical hypothyroidism, regardless of their BMI. MUNW subjects had an approximately 1.6-fold higher risk of overt hyperthyroidism and a 1.8-fold higher risk of Graves' disease than their metabolically healthy counterparts (MHNW). The present study also demonstrated that the MUO group had the highest risk of goiter and thyroid nodules among the metabolic phenotypes of obesity. Conclusion Based on our study, we found that metabolic abnormalities and obesity play different roles in various thyroid diseases. Metabolically unhealthy individuals, both with and without obesity, have a higher risk of thyroid disorders than metabolically healthy individuals without obesity.

Abstract
Bariatric surgery (BS) has been demonstrated to achieve sustained weight loss with significant metabolic improvement, including a reduction in cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The aim of this retrospective study is to measure the effect of BS on the Framingham risk score (FRS) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among patients who underwent bariatric surgery. Additionally, we determine the effect of BS on thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) among euthyroid obese patients. A retrospective follow-up study was conducted at King Abdullah Medical City, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. A total of 160 patients underwent BS and completed one-year follow-up visits. Medical history, anthropometric, biochemical, and hormonal parameters were evaluated at baseline and 3−12 months after BS. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria were used to diagnose MetS. There was a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glycated hemoglobin (Hba1c), TSH, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides, and total cholesterol (p < 0.001). A significant decrease was seen in MetS, BMI, FRS, SBP, DBP, Hba1c, LDL, triglycerides, cholesterol, and liver enzymes, with a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein levels 12 months postoperatively (p < 0.001). At 12 months, the prevalence of MetS, DM, and HTN and the FRS significantly decreased from 72.5%, 43.1%, 78.1%, and 11.4 to 16.3%, 9.4%, 22.5%, and 5.4, respectively. In addition to achieving substantial weight loss, BS improves MetS prevalence and cardiovascular risk profiles.

Abstract
Background Lipoedema is a chronic disease in adipose tissue that almost exclusively affects women during periods of hormonal alterations. Its main symptoms include an abnormal accumulation of subcutaneous fat in the buttock, hips, and legs, which is associated with pain, swelling, and easy bruising. Herein, a grading in three stages is used to determine disease progression. Problematically, lipoedema manifestations are often confused with lifestyle-induced obesity, which is why the various health problems among affected women often remain unrecognized. Overall, research on lipoedema is scarce. As such, this study examined the health, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and sense of coherence (SOC) among women with lipoedema. Methods We conducted a national cross-sectional study using an online survey assessing sociodemographic data, lipoedema characteristics, symptom severity, comorbidities, HRQOL (RAND-36), and SOC (SOC-13). In total, 245 women with lipoedema, recruited from all Lipoedema Association groups in Sweden, participated. Data were compiled with descriptive statistics, and mean differences between groups were analysed by using parametric and non-parametric tests. Results Moderate and severe leg heaviness, pain, numbness, cold skin, feeling cold, easy bruising, and sleep problems were found to occur in all lipoedema stages. Moreover, almost all participants reported having comorbidities. Worse physical health and most substantial limitations in daily life were reported among women with the most progressive lipoedema (i.e., stage 3). Social and emotional functioning and SOC were found to be, on the other hand, primarily related to respondents’ sociodemographic data and their ages at lipoedema onset. Even though approximately 70% of the women had experienced lipoedema onset before age 30, only three (1.6%) had been diagnosed by a healthcare professional before that age. Conclusion Having lipoedema is associated with several health problems and a lower HRQOL. In addition, the extent of delay in diagnosis within this sample indicates that many women with lipoedema are often underdiagnosed and are left without support from healthcare. These findings call for the need for greater attention on lipoedema. Moreover, further studies on how women with lipoedema manage their health and symptoms, as well as on their experiences of healthcare services and lipoedema treatments, are needed. Abstract
Obesity in pregnancy induces metabolic syndrome, low-grade inflammation, altered endocrine factors, placental function, and the maternal gut microbiome. All these factors impact fetal growth and development, including brain development. The lipid metabolic transporters of the maternal-fetal-placental unit are dysregulated in obesity. Consequently, the transport of essential long-chain PUFAs for fetal brain development is disturbed. The mother’s gut microbiota is vital in maintaining postnatal energy homeostasis and maternal-fetal immune competence. Obesity during pregnancy changes the gut microbiota, affecting fetal brain development. Obesity in pregnancy can induce placental and intrauterine inflammation and thus influence the neurodevelopmental outcomes of the offspring. Several epidemiological studies observed an association between maternal obesity and adverse neurodevelopment. This review discusses the effects of maternal obesity and gut microbiota on fetal neurodevelopment outcomes. In addition, the possible mechanisms of the impacts of obesity and gut microbiota on fetal brain development are discussed.

Abstract
A positive correlation between Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Body Mass Index (BMI) has been reported in many studies, but data on this topic remain controversial, especially when TSH values are in the normal range. Moreover, few studies have evaluated the co-existence of thyroid autoimmunity. This study investigated the role of thyroid autoimmunity in the interconnection between TSH, BMI, and waist circumference (WC) in euthyroid patients with overweight or obesity. We enrolled 902 patients (213 males; mean age ± SD: 45 ± 14 years; mean BMI ± SD: 35.8 ± 6.5 kg/m2), with normal serum TSH concentration; anti-thyroid autoantibodies (ATAs) were evaluated in 752 patients (186 males). Patients were divided into four BMI classes, based on WHO criteria, and the relationship between BMI, WC, and TSH was evaluated in the whole sample and compared to ATAs positivity, observed in 235 patients (44 males). No significant difference was found between TSH levels in the BMI classes. A statistically significant correlation between TSH and BMI was found only in ATAs-positive females (N = 191, Spearman rho: 0.149; p-value: 0.040). However, this finding was not confirmed when considering the WC. Our study shows a positive correlation only between TSH and BMI in obese women with positive ATAs, suggesting that in these patients, the high normal levels of TSH could be attributed to a mild thyroid failure with a possible worsening obesity-related effect, and both need a careful evaluation.

Abstract
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is the most common autoimmune disease and the leading cause of hypothyroidism, in which damage to the thyroid gland occurs due to the infiltration of lymphocytes. It is characterized by increased levels of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin. In this review, we present the metabolic profile, the effectiveness of micronutrient supplementation and the impact of dietary management in patients with HT. For this current literature review, the databases PubMed, Cochrane, Medline and Embase were reviewed from the last ten years until March 2022. This article provides a comprehensive overview of recent randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, and clinical trials. Many patients with HT, even in the euthyroid state, have excess body weight, metabolic disorders, and reduced quality of life. Due to frequent concomitant nutritional deficiencies, the role of vitamin D, iodine, selenium, magnesium, iron and vitamin B12 is currently debated. Several studies have underlined the benefits of vitamin D and selenium supplementation. There is still no specific diet recommended for patients with HT, but a protective effect of an anti-inflammatory diet rich in vitamins and minerals and low in animal foods has been suggested. There is insufficient evidence to support a gluten-free diet for all HT patients. Pharmacotherapy, along with appropriate nutrition and supplementation, are important elements of medical care for patients with HT. The abovementioned factors may decrease autoantibody levels, improve thyroid function, slow down the inflammatory process, maintain proper body weight, relieve symptoms, and prevent nutritional deficiencies and the development of metabolic disorders in patients with HT.

Abstract
In obesity, the hormonal secretion of the thyroid gland switches from homeostasis to type 2 allostasis in order to adapt to persistent modifications of adipose tissue and inflammation. Previous meta-analyses have linked obesity with an increased risk of developing thyroid diseases, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. We designed an observational cross-sectional study including all female patients presenting consecutively in an ambulatory clinic for 16 months. This study aimed to describe the level of serum cytokines and chemokines in relation to TSH, fT4 and insulin resistance (IR) indexes in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH). The study included 72 women with a median age of 59 ± 17.75 years, and a mean BMI (Body Mass Index) of 31.48 ± 6.75 kg/m2. Modelling homeostasis model assessment of IR indices (HOMA-IR) based on chemokines (IL-8, CXCL10, CXCL11, leptin), C-reactive protein, the presence or absence of SCH, taking into account age, BMI, abdominal circumference, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (ATPO) as covariates, identified a single chemokine that was significantly associated with the dependent variable (IL-8). IR indices are negatively associated with IL-8 in female patients with subclinical hypothyroidism, but the effect of the cytokine is minimal. BMI rather than TSH influences the level of CXCL11 in our population. CXCL10 has a tendency to increase in patients with SCH, obesity and prediabetes, with no association with TSH.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective This study aimed to understand the association of anthropometric and body adiposity measures with thyroid dysfunction in clinical settings of Manipur, Northeast India.
Materials and Methods The study included 160 Meitei and 152 Thadou-Kuki thyroid dysfunction patients undergoing treatment under medical specialists. Anthropometric data and related adiposity measures were collected along with the medical data.
Results Hypothyroid represents 70.83% and hyperthyroid 29.17% of the total samples included in the study. The incidence of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid, irrespective of ethnic groups, is higher among females (87.49%) than males (12.49%). Hypothyroid individuals are significantly heavier and have higher adiposity measures than hyperthyroid, which is more significantly observed among the Thadou Kuki. Significantly higher waist circumference and weight to height ratio among the hypothyroid patients put the notion of adiposity deposition, apart from just water retention. Ethnic variation in the association reflects socioeconomic intervention in the management of thyroid problems.
Conclusion In conclusion, proper dietary intake or supplements in the course of thyroid dysfunction treatment are important as they can complicate thyroid dysfunction patients with other associated comorbidities.

Abstract
Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) occurs in obesity and may be associated with thyroid dysfunction. We aimed to investigate the association of VA with thyroid function in obesity and after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Nine hundred and seventy-six obese subjects were enrolled for this study and were divided into VAD, marginal vitamin A deficiency (MVAD), and vitamin A normal (NVA) groups. VAD was defined as VA ≤ 200 ng/ml, MVAD was defined as VA > 200 but <300 ng/ml, and NVA was defined as VA ≥ 300 ng/ml. Thyroid function was compared among groups and the relationship of VA and thyroid function was analyzed. Two hundred and forty-four of the 976 obese subjects underwent LSG, and the change in thyroid function and VA at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery was measured. Results showed that 37% of all the subjects had subclinical hypothyroidism (SH), and the SH group had lower VA levels than the non-SH group (P = 0.008). Forty-nine percent of all the subjects had MVAD, 9% had VAD, while the MVAD or VAD group had lower FT4 than the NVA group (P = 0.005 and P = 0.001). The VAD group also had higher TSH than NVA group (P = 0.037). VA was significantly negatively associated with TSH (r = −0.151, P = 0.006) and positively associated with FT4 (r = 0.228, P < 0.001). TSH was significantly decreased at 3, 6, and 12 months (3M: from 4.43 ± 2.70 to 2.63 ± 1.46 mU/l, P < 0.001; 6M: from 4.43 ± 2.70 to 3.84 ± 2.34 mU/l, P = 0.041; 12M: from 4.43 ± 2.70 to 2.85 ± 1.68 mU/l, P = 0.024). After LSG surgery, VA levels were slightly increased, when compared to pre-surgery levels, at 3, 6, and 12 months (3M: from 262.57 ± 68.19 to 410.33 ± 76.55 ng/ml, P = 0.065; 6M: from 262.57 ± 68.19 to 281.36 ± 93.23 ng/ml, P = 0.343; 12M: from 262.57 ± 68.19 to 300.37 ± 86.03 ng/ml, P = 0.083). SH group also had lower TSH and higher VA than the non-SH group at 3 months post-surgery [TSH: −1.4(−2.3, −0.3) vs. −0.2(−0.8, −0.2) mU/l, P < 0.001; VA: 163.99 ± 32.58 vs. 121.69 ± 27.59 ng/ml, P = 0.044]. In conclusion VA, which is related to thyroid hormone production, protects against thyroid dysfunction in obese subjects. The improvement of thyroid function in subjects with SH after LSG may be related to the increased VA levels observed post-surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both obesity and subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) have adverse effects on human body, but the relationship between these two conditions remains inconsistent. The presence of thyroid autoantibodies influences thyroid hormone levels, and may further mediate the interaction between obesity and SCH. This study aimed to explore the association among obesity, SCH and thyroid autoantibodies. METHODS This study was a cross-sectional survey of 2505 subjects. Obesity was defined as a body mass index ≥28 kg/m2. Serum concentrations of thyroid hormones, thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab) and thyroglobulin antibody (Tg-Ab) were examined. Logistic analysis was used to explore the relation among obesity, SCH and thyroid autoantibodies. RESULTS A proportion of 11.54% (289/2505) subjects were obese, and 165 subjects had SCH. The positive rates of thyroid autoantibodies, TPO-Ab and Tg-Ab were 17.64% (442/2505), 11.02% (276/2505) and 14.13% (354/2505), respectively. The proportion of SCH was significantly higher in obese than nonobese subjects among those with positive thyroid autoantibodies [22.41% (13/58) vs. 11.72% (45/384), p = 0.025, χ2 test]. Moreover, obesity was significantly associated with SCH in the presence of thyroid autoantibodies after adjusting for confounding factors (OR 2.212, 95% CI 1.103 to 4.433, p = 0.025). A higher proportion of subjects with obesity had Tg-Ab positivity [17.99% (52/289) vs. 13.63% (302/2216), p = 0.045, χ2 test], and obesity remained significantly associated with Tg-Ab positivity by multiple logistic analysis (OR 1.504, 95% CI 1.077 to 2.101, p = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS Obesity was associated with SCH in the presence of thyroid autoantibodies. Examination of SCH is recommended in obese subjects with thyroid autoantibody positivity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pregnant women with autoimmune (subclinical) hypothyroidism have an increased risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, this association remains controversial in euthyroid women with thyroid autoimmunity (TAI). Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the association between TAI and GDM in euthyroid women in a logistic regression analysis with adjustments for baseline/demographic parameters. METHODS Cross-sectional study in 1447 euthyroid women who performed their entire clinical/biological workup and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in our center. At median 13 (11-17) weeks of gestation, thyroid-stimulating hormone, free T4, and thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) were measured, baseline characteristics were recorded, and an OGTT was performed between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. Exclusion criteria were pre-pregnancy diabetes, assisted pregnancies, and women with (treated) thyroid dysfunction before or after screening. The diagnosis of GDM was based on 2013 World Health Organization criteria, and TAI was defined as TPOAb levels ≥60 kIU/L. RESULTS Two hundred eighty women were diagnosed with GDM (19.4%), 26.1% in women with TAI, and 18.9% in women without TAI (P = 0.096). In the logistic regression analysis, TAI was associated with GDM in women older than 30 years (adjusted odds ratio 1.68 (95% CI, 1.01-2.78); P = 0.048). Maternal age >30 years, pre-pregnancy BMI ≥30 kg/m2, and other than Caucasian background were also associated with GDM; aOR 1.93 (95% CI, 1.46-2.56); P < 0.001, 2.03 (95% CI, 1.46-2.81); P < 0.001 and 1.46 (95% CI, 1.03-2.06); P = 0.034, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In older pregnant women, the presence of TAI in euthyroid women was associated with GDM. In line with the literature data, (higher) age and BMI were strongly associated with GDM. Future investigations should focus on treatments that might prevent the development of GDM in euthyroid women with TAI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidences of both paediatric obesity and autoimmune diseases have been increasing, but their relationship with one another is unclear. OBJECTIVE To determine whether obesity or particular dietary patterns in school-aged children are potential risk factors for autoimmune diseases during adolescence. METHODS This matched case-control study included 525 children, followed up from a median age of 11.3 to 16.7 years. Of them, 105 children received primary autoimmune diagnoses (diabetes, thyroiditis, arthritis, or inflammatory bowel diseases) after baseline and generated the case group. Four children with matching age, sex, and residential area generated the control group of 420 children. At baseline, age- and sex-specific body mass index categories were acquired and waist-to-height ratio (WHTR) was calculated. Central obesity was present when WHTR ≥0.5. Dietary patterns were analysed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). RESULTS School-aged children with central obesity were 2.11 (OR, 95% CI 1.11-3.98) times more likely to develop autoimmune diseases before age of 19 years than those without central obesity. Being overweight was not related to the onset of these diseases (OR 1.60, 95% CI 0.89-2.87, nor were dietary patterns. CONCLUSION Central obesity in school-aged children was related to the development of autoimmune diseases, while being overweight and dietary patterns were not.

Abstract
Background Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) is recognized as the most common autoimmune thyroid disease, often accompanied by the diffuse enlargement of thyroid with abundant blood flow and elevated level of thyroid autoantibodies. As obesity had a positive association with the risk of HT. Thus, this retrospective study was established to further explore the gender relationship between metabolic obesity phenotypes and the risk of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). Materials and Methods Data for 3697 subjects aged ≥18 years were randomly collected from a Health check-up database from April to December 2019. Obesity was defined by general obesity (GO; body mass index [BMI] ≥28 kg/m2) and abdominal obesity (AO; waist circumstance, male ≥90 cm, female ≥85 cm). Metabolic unhealthy was defined as having at least one metabolic syndrome component and a homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance ≥2.5. Obesity phenotypes were divided into three groups: GO, AO, compound obesity (GO+AO). After adjustment for potential confounding factors, multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the association between metabolic obesity phenotypes and risk of HT by sex and explore the correlation between different obesity patterns and HT risk by metabolic health status. Results The incidence of HT was 23.5% and significantly higher among females than males with different metabolic phenotypes (26.2% vs 20.5%, p<0.05), except metabolically healthy AO. Compared with non-obese subjects, different metabolic obesity phenotypes were independent risk factors among males (p<0.05). Among females, unhealthy metabolic status with GO (adjusted odds ratio [OR]=2.62) or AO (adjusted OR=2.87) and metabolically healthy non-GO (adjusted OR=2.05) were risk factors of HT (p<0.05). Increasing BMI categories and waist circumstance quartiles were positively correlated with HT risk (p for trend <0.05). Subgroup analyses indicated that GO+AO (adjusted OR=2.52) or only AO (adjusted OR=2.41) were risk factors for HT for those with unhealthy metabolic status. Moreover, GO+AO (adjusted OR=2.37) was an independent risk factor for HT under healthy metabolic status. Conclusion GO+AO was associated with an increased risk of HT, identifying higher BMI/WC as a significant risk factor for HT. Males with unhealthy metabolic state or obesity and metabolically unhealthy females with obesity are high-risk group for HT. Additionally, only AO and GO+AO conferred increased risk of HT for individuals with metabolic abnormalities.

Abstract
Obesity is a debilitating disorder with a variety of problems including oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. The aim of our study was to investigate the therapeutic role of bee bread on oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation in the testis of obese rats. Thirty-two adult male Sprague Dawley rats, with weights between 230–300 g, were distributed into four groups (n = 8/group), namely normal control (C), obese (Ob), obese + BB or obese + OR [high-fat diet (HFD) for 6 weeks then HFD plus bee bread or orlistat for another 6 weeks] groups. Bee bread (0.5 g/kg) or orlistat (10 mg/kg/day) was diluted with distilled water and administered daily for 6 weeks by oral gavage. There were significant decreases in the activities of antioxidant enzymes [glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR)], glutathione (GSH)] and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels and mRNA expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2 (Nrf2), superoxide dismutase (Sod), catalase (Cat) and glutathione peroxidase (Gpx) in the obese group relative to the control group. Meanwhile, the mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory markers, namely: inducible nitric oxide synthase (Inos), nuclear factor kappa B (Nf-κβ), tumour necrotic factor α (Tnf-α) and interleukin 1β (Il-1β) were significantly increased while interleukin (Il-10) was decreased in the obese group relative to the control group. Further, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunoexpressions decreased while cleaved caspase-3 immunohistochemical staining increased significantly in the obese group, in addition to increases in the mRNA levels of p53, Bax, Caspases-8, 9 and 3, relative to the control group. Treatment with bee bread showed increases in antioxidant enzymes and PCNA immunoexpression, as well as decreases in inflammation and apoptosis markers in the testes. This study has shown that bee bread has therapeutic effects against oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis in the testis of HFD-induced obese male rats, thereby suggesting its role as a natural supplement capable of treating obesity-induced male reproductive impairment.

Abstract
This meta-analysis aimed to analyze retinal microvasculature features in eyes with Behçet's disease (BD) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library, were comprehensively searched for published studies comparing retinal microvasculature characteristics between eyes with BD and controls. Continuous variables were calculated using the mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Review Manager software (version 5.30) was used to conduct statistical analysis. A total of 13 eligible studies involving 599 eyes with BD and 622 control eyes were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled results showed that the macular whole enface superficial and deep vessel density (VD) values measured by OCTA were significantly lower in eyes with BD than in control eyes (superficial VD: MD = - 3.05, P < 0.00001; deep VD: MD = - 4.05, P = 0.0004). The foveal superficial and deep VD values were also significantly lower in the BD group than in the control group (superficial VD: MD = - 1.50, P = 0.009; deep VD: MD = - 4.25, - = 0.03). Similarly, the analysis revealed a significant reduction in the parafoveal superficial and deep VD in eyes with BD than in control eyes (superficial VD: MD = - 3.68, P < 0.00001; deep VD: MD = - 4.95, P = 0.0007). In addition, the superficial and deep foveal avascular zones (FAZs) were significantly larger in patients with BD than in controls (superficial FAZ: MD = 0.06, P = 0.02; deep FAZ: MD = 0.12, P = 0.03). The present meta-analysis found that macular whole enface VD, foveal VD, and parafoveal VD were lower in eyes with BD, and the FAZ was larger in patients with BD. The findings suggest that OCTA can assist clinicians in diagnosing and monitoring the status of patients with BD.

Abstract
Obesity is strongly associated with chronic low-grade inflammation. Obese patients have an increased risk to develop thyroid autoimmunity and to became hypothyroid, suggesting a pathogenetic link between obesity, inflammation and autoimmunity. Moreover, type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia, also characterized by low-grade inflammation, were recently associated with more aggressive forms of Graves' ophthalmopathy. The association between obesity and autoimmune thyroid disorders may also go in the opposite direction, as treating autoimmune hyper and hypothyroidism can lead to weight gain. In addition, restoration of euthyroidism by L-T4 replacement therapy is more challenging in obese athyreotic patients, as it is difficult to maintain thyrotropin stimulation hormone (TSH) values within the normal range. Intriguingly, pro-inflammatory cytokines decrease in obese patients after bariatric surgery along with TSH levels. Moreover, the risk of thyroid cancer is increased in patients with thyroid autoimmune disorders, and is also related to the degree of obesity and inflammation. Molecular studies have shown a relationship between the low-grade inflammation of obesity and the activity of intracellular multiprotein complexes typical of immune cells (inflammasomes). We will now highlight some clinical implications of inflammasome activation in the relationship between obesity and thyroid disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obesity and autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) are both common disorders in the general population, which are major drivers for adverse medical conditions. While an interaction between thyroid function and visceral obesity is thought to exist, but very few studies have examined the relationship between AITD and visceral obesity, especially in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In the present study, we investigated the association between elevated thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) titer and visceral fat area in T2DM patients. METHODS A total of 390 T2DM patients who met the criteria for admission and joined the National Metabolic Management Center (MMC) in the Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital from April 2020 to December 2020 were enrolled in this study. The participants were divided into two groups based on visceral obesity. Thyroid function, thyroid associated antibody and other metabolic indicators were measured by blood tests. The visceral fat area (VFA) and the subcutaneous fat area (SFA) were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS There were 185 participants (47.4%) had visceral obesity. The positive rate of TPOAb was significantly higher in T2DM patients with visceral obesity (12.97% vs 5.37%, p < 0.01). Free triiodothyronine (FT3) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were both significantly higher in T2DM patients with visceral obesity (p < 0.05). The increased TPOAb titer was significantly positively correlated with visceral fat area (r = 0.175, p < 0.01). Binary logistic analysis showed that the positive rate of TPOAb was associated with an increased risk of visceral obesity [(OR) 4.258, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.594, 11.375, p = 0.004]. CONCLUSION TPOAb-positive is more common in T2DM patients with visceral obesity, which has some effects on visceral obesity independent of thyroid function. This suggests that elevated TPOAb titer is a predictor of visceral obesity in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Primary hypothyroidism severely impacts the quality of life of patients through a decrease in the production of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4, leading to symptoms affecting cardiovascular, neurological, cognitive, and metabolic function. The incidence rate of primary hypothyroidism is expected to increase in the near future, partially due to increasing survival of patients that have undergone radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, which induces this disease in over half of those treated. The current standard of care encompasses thyroid hormone replacement therapy, traditionally in the form of synthetic T4. However, there is mounting evidence that this is unable to restore thyroid hormone signaling in all tissues due to often persistent symptoms. Additional complications are also present in the form of dosage difficulties, extensive drug interactions and poor patience compliance. The alternative therapeutic approach employed in the past is combination therapy, which consists of administration of both T3 and T4, either synthetic or in the form of desiccated thyroid extract. Here, issues are present regarding the lack of regulation concerning formulation and lack of data regarding safety and efficacy of these treatment methods. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have been applied in conjunction with each other to restore function of various tissues. Recently, these techniques have been adapted for thyroid tissue, primarily through the fabrication of regenerative scaffolds. Those currently under investigation are composed of either biopolymers or native decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) in conjunction with either primary thyrocytes or stem cells which have undergone directed thyroid differentiation. Multiple of these scaffolds have successfully restored an athyroid phenotype in vivo. However, further work is needed until clinical translation can be achieved. This is proposed in the form of exploration and combination of materials used to fabricate these scaffolds, the addition of peptides which can aid restoration of tissue homeostasis and additional in vivo experimentation providing data on safety and efficacy of these implants.

Abstract
Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves' disease are autoimmune thyroid diseases which occur much more frequently in women than in men. Estrogen receptors are found in the thyroid gland and can modulate the gland's function. Digit ratio (2D:4D) is thought to be a negative correlate of prenatal testosterone and a positive correlate of prenatal estrogen. This study aimed to examine a relationship between right and left 2D:4D in women with Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves' disease. The cross-sectional study included 106 women with autoimmune thyroid disease: 73 women diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis and 33 women with Graves' disease, together with 70 healthy women as controls. Second and fourth digit length, weight, height were measured directly, and 2D:4D and BMI were calculated. Compared to controls, right and left 2D:4D were significantly higher in women with Hashimoto thyroiditis and lower in women with Graves' disease, the effects were higher for right 2D:4D. The mean length of right 4D was significantly lower in the examined women with Hashimoto thyroiditis than in Graves' disease. Higher right and left 2D:4D in women with Hashimoto thyroiditis suggests that prenatal exposure to high levels of estrogens relative to testosterone may play a role in the development of this disease. Lower right and left 2D:4D in women with Graves' disease suggest a role of high prenatal androgens relative to estrogens in Graves' disease pathogenesis.

Abstract
Thyroid disease instances have rapidly increased in the past few decades; however, the cause of the disease remains unclear. Understanding the pathogenesis of thyroid disease will potentially reduce morbidity and mortality rates. Currently, the identified risk factors from existing studies are controversial as they were determined through qualitative analysis and were not further confirmed by quantitative implementations. Association rule mining, as a subset of data mining techniques, is dedicated to revealing underlying correlations among multiple attributes from a complex heterogeneous dataset, making it suitable for thyroid disease pathogenesis identification. This study adopts two association rule mining algorithms (i.e., Apriori and FP-Growth Tree) to identify risk factors correlated with thyroid disease. Extensive experiments were conducted to reach impartial findings with respect to knowledge discovery through two independent digital health datasets. The findings confirmed that gender, hypertension, and obesity are positively related to thyroid disease development. The history of I131 treatment and Triiodothyronine level can be potential factors for evaluating subsequent thyroid disease.

Abstract
There is accumulating evidence that individuals with schizophrenia show altered levels of thyroid hormones. However, a qualitative and quantitative synthesis of findings in this field has not been performed so far. Therefore, we aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), total thyroxine (tT4), free triiodothyronine (fT3) and total triiodothyronine (tT3) in multiple-episode schizophrenia (MES) and first-episode psychosis (FEP). Electronic databases were searched from their inception until 30th May 2020 by two independent reviewers. Random-effects meta-analyses and meta-regression analyses were performed. Altogether, 19 studies were included. Persons with FEP had significantly lower TSH levels (5 studies, g = -0.26, 95%CI: -0.47 to -0.06, p = 0.013, I2 = 21.3%), higher fT4 levels (3 studies, g = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.15-1.01, p = 0.008, I2 = 64.6%) and lower tT3 levels (2 studies, g = -0.60, 95%CI: -0.82 to -0.37, p < 0.001, I2 = 0%) compared to controls. Elevated TSH levels were found in persons with MES (13 studies, g = 0.20, 95%CI: 0.02-0.39, p = 0.031, I2 = 50.0%). Our findings imply that the levels of TSH might be decreased in persons with FEP and increased in those with MES. Other alterations need to be confirmed by additional studies. These findings imply the need to monitor the levels of TSH and thyroid hormones from the onset of psychosis.

Abstract
Diabetes and thyroid diseases are caused by endocrine dysfunction and both have been demonstrated to mutually impact each other. Variation in thyroid hormone levels, even within the normal range, can trigger the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), particularly in people with prediabetes. However, the available evidence is contradictory. The purpose of this review is to understand the pathological relationship between thyroid-related disorders and T2DM. T2DM in thyroid dysfunction is thought to be caused by altered gene expression of a group of genes, as well as physiological abnormalities that result in decreased glucose uptake increased, splanchnic glucose absorption, disposal in muscles, increased hepatic glucose output. Additionally, both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can cause insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can develop in subclinical hypothyroidism as a result of a reduced rate of insulin-stimulated glucose transfer caused by a translocation of the glucose transporter type 2 (GLUT 2) gene. On the other hand, novel missense variations in (Thr92Ala) can cause insulin resistance. Furthermore insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia resulting from diabetes can cause culminate in goitrous transformation of the thyroid gland. Thyroid-related diseases and T2DM are closely linked. Type 2 diabetes can be exacerbated by thyroid disorders, and diabetes can worsen thyroid dysfunction. Insulin resistance has been found to play a crucial role in both T2DM and thyroid dysfunction. Therefore, failure to recognize inadequate thyroid hormone levels in diabetes and insulin resistance in both conditions can lead to poor management of patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease are two areas of broad interest in the field of endocrinology and metabolism. Variation of thyroid hormone concentration, even within the normal range, may portend the onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), especially among those with prediabetes. However, current evidence is mixed. METHODS Prospective studies which assessed diabetes incidence were identified using a database search of MEDLINE and Embase through May 1, 2021. The Sidik-Jonkman random-effects model and cubic spline model were used to evaluate the associations and dose-response relationships between thyroid function/hormone levels and risk of T2DM and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among T2DM patients. RESULTS A total of 12 prospective studies were included. We found that high baseline TSH levels were related to a 17% higher risk of T2DM (RR 1.17, 95% CI 1.01, 1.36; I2=78%, P<0.01), compared with normal TSH levels. Low FT3 (RR 1.40, 95% CI 1.09, 1.80; I2=59%, P=0.03) and low FT4 (RR 1.33, 95% CI 1.04, 1.71; I2=62%, P=0.02) levels were significantly associated with risk of T2DM. The cubic spline model indicated a J-shaped relationship with TSH, but inverted-J-shaped relationships with FT3 and FT4. CVD events and all-cause deaths were prospectively evaluated in four studies, but were not associated with abnormal thyroid function. CONCLUSIONS Our meta-analysis determined that abnormal thyroid hormone level is associated with an increased risk of T2DM, showing a J-shaped relationship with TSH and inverted-J-shaped relationships with FT3 and FT4. Abstract
Thyroid diseases, including neoplasms, autoimmune diseases and thyroid dysfunctions, are becoming a serious social problem with rapidly increasing prevalence. The latter is increasingly linked to oxidative stress. There are many methods for determining the biomarkers of oxidative stress, making it possible to evaluate the oxidative profile in patients with thyroid diseases compared to the healthy population. This opens up a new perspective for investigating the role of elevated parameters of oxidative stress and damage in people with thyroid diseases, especially of neoplastic nature. An imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants is observed at different stages and in different types of thyroid diseases. The organ, which is part of the endocrine system, uses free radicals (reactive oxygen species, ROS) to produce hormones. Thyroid cells release enzymes that catalyse ROS generation; therefore, a key role is played by the internal defence system and non-enzymatic antioxidants that counteract excess ROS not utilised to produce thyroid hormones, acting as a buffer to neutralise free radicals and ensure whole-body homeostasis. An excess of free radicals causes structural cell damage, undermining genomic stability. Looking at the negative effects of ROS accumulation, oxidative stress appears to be implicated in both the initiation and progression of carcinogenesis. The aim of this review is to investigate the oxidation background of thyroid diseases and to summarise the links between redox imbalance and thyroid dysfunction and disease.

Abstract
Microbiome First Medicine is a suggested 21st century healthcare paradigm that prioritizes the entire human, the human superorganism, beginning with the microbiome. To date, much of medicine has protected and treated patients as if they were a single species. This has resulted in unintended damage to the microbiome and an epidemic of chronic disorders [e.g., noncommunicable diseases and conditions (NCDs)]. Along with NCDs came loss of colonization resistance, increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, and increasing multimorbidity and polypharmacy over the life course. To move toward sustainable healthcare, the human microbiome needs to be front and center. This paper presents microbiome-human physiology from the view of systems biology regulation. It also details the ongoing NCD epidemic including the role of existing drugs and other factors that damage the human microbiome. Examples are provided for two entryway NCDs, asthma and obesity, regarding their extensive network of comorbid NCDs. Finally, the challenges of ensuring safety for the microbiome are detailed. Under Microbiome-First Medicine and considering the importance of keystone bacteria and critical windows of development, changes in even a few microbiota-prioritized medical decisions could make a significant difference in health across the life course.

Abstract
Ilex cornuta Leaves (ICLs) are a representative and traditional prescription for controlling obesity. Nevertheless, the corresponding therapeutic compounds and related pharmacological mechanisms of such medication remain undocumented. The compounds from ICLs were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrum (GC-MS), and SwissADME confirmed their physicochemical properties. Next, the target proteins related to compounds or obesity-associated proteins were retrieved from public databases. RPackage constructed the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network, a bubble chart, and signaling pathways–target proteins–compounds (STC) network. Lastly, a molecular docking test (MDT) was performed to evaluate the affinity between target proteins and ligands from ICLs. GC-MS detected a total of 51 compounds from ICLs. The public databases identified 219 target proteins associated with selective compounds, 3028 obesity-related target proteins, and 118 overlapping target proteins. Moreover, the STC network revealed 42 target proteins, 22 signaling pathways, and 39 compounds, which were viewed to be remedially significant. The NOD-like receptor (NLR) signaling pathway was considered a key signaling pathway from the bubble chart. In parallel, the MDT identified three target proteins (IL6, MAPK1, and CASP1) on the NLR signaling pathway and four compounds against obesity. Overall, four compounds from ICLs might show anti-obesity synergistic efficacy by inactivating the NLR signaling pathway.

Abstract
PURPOSE Obese individuals have an increased risk of hypothyroidism. This study investigated the sex-specific association between obesity phenotypes and the development of hypothyroidism. METHODS The study population was derived from a health management cohort in Shandong Provincial Hospital from 2012 to 2016. In total, 9011 baseline euthyroid adults were included and classified into four groups according to obesity phenotype: metabolically healthy nonobese (MHNO), metabolically healthy obese (MHO), metabolically unhealthy nonobese (MUNO), and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO). The median follow-up time was 1.92 (1.00-2.17) years. Incidence density was evaluated and a generalized estimation equation method was used to investigate the associations between obesity phenotypes and the development of hypothyroidism. RESULTS The incidence densities of hypothyroidism in males with a consistent obesity phenotype were 12.19 (8.62-16.76), 15.87 (11.39-21.56), 14.52 (6.74-27.57), and 19.88 (14.06-27.34) per 1000 person-years in the MHNO, MHO, MUNO, and MUO groups, respectively. After adjusting for confounding factors, compared with the MHNO phenotype, the MHO, MUNO, and MUO phenotypes were independent risk factors for developing hypothyroidism in males. In the subgroup analysis, the MHO and MUO phenotypes were independent risk factors for developing hypothyroidism in males under 55 years, while the MUNO phenotype was an independent risk factor in males over 55 years. The MHO, MUNO, and MUO phenotypes were not independent risk factors for hypothyroidism in females. CONCLUSION Both obesity and metabolic abnormities are associated with a higher risk of hypothyroidism in males. The underlying mechanism of the sex and age differences in this association needs further investigation.

Abstract
The prevalence of thyroid diseases is high in the general population and causes serious abnormalities and disorders that can affect the quality of life. Many complications can result from poor or inappropriate management of the disease, leading to serious cardiovascular and metabolic complications. In the present review study, we aim to discuss the effect of thyroid diseases on metabolic and electrolyte abnormalities and the potential correlation with some common disorders. Evidence from previous studies has demonstrated that thyroid dysfunctions hugely affect the metabolism of glucose in the bodies of the affected patients, which can lead to the development of both type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Hyperthyroidism can lead to the development of impaired glucose tolerance and secondary diabetes mellitus. These include an increased glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis process, increased intestinal absorption of glucose, and secondary ketogenesis and lipolysis, which will subsequently affect the functions of the insulin-secreting cells of the pancreas. Evidence showed that thyroid diseases are associated with the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome, and the management for these modalities should involve prior management of underlying thyroid diseases. Efforts should be made to adequately manage these cases with concomitant approaches to achieve the best clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disease occurred at any age especially in the 30 and 50 years of patient, with time thyroid gland is lost its function, as the lymphocytes produce inflammatory cytokines, have a direct effect on the thyroid gland function. The monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP) produced by the podocyte and monocyte in response to these stimuli and has a role in the feedback based on thyroid hormones therefore MCP is increased secretion depending on thyroid hormones; also it's increased with enlargement of adipocyte tissue, i.e., in patients with high body mass index (BMI), there is a relationship between Hashimoto's disease and obesity, that has an effect on the thyroid gland function. Obesity have important role on thyrostimulated hormones (TSHs), as it has a great effect on metabolism and expansion of the thyroid gland; researchers have previously found that obese individuals have higher serum TSH levels. The results of the study have reported that MCP 1, TSH, and BMI levels were highly significant increased in sera of G2 compared with G1, while T3 and T4 levels were highly significant decreased in sera of G2 compared with G1 in referring to G1: Healthy control group while G2: HT patients.

Abstract
Background
Obesity-related oxidation stress plays a key role in obesity complications; however, its relation to thyroid status is an area for further research. The study aimed to assess thyroid function in obese children and its relation to oxidative deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage.
Results
Fifty obese and 40 normal weight children were included. Anthropometric measurement, lipid profile, thyroid function, anti-thyroglobulin antibody, thyroid peroxidase antibody, and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine serum level as marker of oxidative DNA damage were measured. Thirty-six percent of children with obesity have subclinical hypothyroidism. Central obesity but not oxidative DNA damage and lipid profile was significantly associated with subclinical hypothyroidism. Waist circumference > 97th centile increases the risk for subclinical hypothyroidism (odd ratio 10.82; confidence interval 95% 2.75–42.409; p-value<0.001).
Conclusion
Central obesity represents a risk factor for subclinical hypothyroidism in obese children. Oxidation DNA damage did not show significant association with subclinical hypothyroidism.

Abstract
The monocarboxylate transporters 8 (MCT8) and 10 (MCT10) are important for thyroid hormone (TH) uptake and signaling. Reduced TH activity is associated with impaired development, weight gain and discomfort. We hypothesized that autoantibodies (aAb) to MCT8 or MCT10 are prevalent in thyroid disease and obesity. Analytical tests for MCT8-aAb and MCT10-aAb were developed and characterized with commercial antiserum. Serum samples from healthy controls, thyroid patients and young overweight subjects were analyzed, and prevalence of the aAb was compared. MCT8-aAb were additionally tested for biological effects on thyroid hormone uptake in cell culture. Positive MCT8-aAb and MCT10-aAb were detected in all three clinical cohorts analyzed. MCT8-aAb were most prevalent in thyroid patients (11.9%) as compared to healthy controls (3.8%) and overweight adolescents (4.2%). MCT8-aAb positive serum reduced T4 uptake in cell culture in comparison to MCT8-aAb negative control serum. Prevalence of MCT10-aAb was highest in the group of thyroid patients as compared to healthy subjects or overweight adolescents (9.0% versus 4.5% and 6.3%, respectively). We conclude that MCT8 and MCT10 represent autoantigens in humans, and that MCT8-aAb may interfere with regular TH uptake and signaling. The increased prevalence of MCT8-aAb and MCT10-aAb in thyroid disease suggests that their presence may be of pathophysiological relevance. This hypothesis deserves an analysis in large prospective studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the increasing worldwide prevalence of obesity, it is essential to determine the prevalence of obesity-related thyroid dysfunctions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions, namely hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, and their association with BMI among adult Iranian overweight and obese individuals. METHOD This cross-sectional study was carried out within the framework of the Tehran Thyroid Study (TTS); 5353 participants (57.5% female) entered our study. Anthropometric measurements were performed. Serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) were assayed. We categorized individuals into 3 BMI groups (normal-weight, overweight and obese), then calculated prevalence rate, odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) for outcomes in overweight and obese groups. The normal-weight group was used as the control group. RESULTS We found a higher prevalence of hypothyroidism (11.6% vs 8.2% Total, 4.0% vs 1.1% overt and 7.6% vs 7.1% subclinical, P < 0.001) and TPOAb positivity (17.3% vs 11.6%, P < 0.001) in obese participants compared with normal-weight participants. Hyperthyroidism's overall prevalence was 4.2, 5.7, and 4.9% in obese, overweight, and normal-weight groups, respectively. Obesity was associated with higher odds of overt hypothyroidism (OR: 2.0, 95% CI: 1.15-3.49, P < 0.05) and TPOAb positivity (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.04-1.60, P < 0.05) after adjusting for confounding variables. In contrast, no association was observed between the overweight group and the odds of hypothyroidism and TPOAb positivity in the adjusted results. CONCLUSIONS Obesity was associated with an increased risk of overt hypothyroidism and TPOAb positivity.

Abstract
Background Compressive symptoms are common in thyroid disease. Many studies have focused on the size of the gland and its effects on patients. However, few have taken into account the body mass of the patient. The aim of our study was to examine whether or not a patient's body mass index (BMI) influences symptomatic outcomes following thyroid surgery for benign disease. Methods We conducted a prospective analysis evaluating 60 patients that underwent thyroidectomy for benign goiter (single or multinodular) disease. Patients were classified as obese, overweight, or normal based on BMI. Pre- and post-operative surveys were administered including the MRC breathlessness scale, M.D. Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI), and the ThyPRO quality of life questionnaire to evaluate dysphagia, dyspnea, and quality of life respectively. Results Patients classified as obese (n=37) scored significantly worse pre-operatively on MRC, MDADI, and ThyPRO surveys when compared to overweight (n=13) or normal weight (n=10) counterparts. Subjects in the obese group, but not the other groups, showed post-surgical improvement on both the MRC and MDADI surveys (P<0.0001). Similarly, obese subjects showed significant improvement on all 11 domains of the ThyPRO survey following surgery (P<0.0001), and overall degree of improvement was highly correlated with BMI among all subjects (r=0.60; P=0.0005). Conclusions Obesity, as determined by BMI, is a critical factor to consider in the alleviation of compressive symptoms before and after thyroidectomy for goiter. Our analysis of survey data indicates obese subjects have increased benefit of surgery compared to their lighter counterparts.

Abstract
Hashimoto’s disease is listed among the most common endocrine causes of obesity. As treatment of obesity in women with Hashimoto’s disease is frequently unsuccessful, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different reducing diets and their influence on changes in thyroid parameters in female patients. A six-month observational/interventional study was performed on 100 women aged 18–65 years, previously diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease and obesity and receiving L-thyroxine. The women were randomly assigned to the test group (group A, n = 50) following elimination/reducing diets, and the control group (group B, n = 50) following reducing diets with the same caloric content (without elimination). Anthropometric and thyroid parameters were evaluated at the beginning, after 3 months and after 6 months of treatment. In both groups a significant decrease in BMI and body fat percentage was achieved, but in test group A the decrease in BMI and body fat percentage was significantly greater than in control group B (p < 0.002 and p = 0.026, respectively). Serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormon) levels decreased significantly more in group A than in group B (p < 0.001). Group A exhibited significantly greater increases in fT4 and fT3 levels than the control group (p < 0.001) as well as significantly greater decreases in the levels anti-TPO (thyroid peroxidase) (p < 0.001) and anti-TG (thyreoglobulin) antibodies (p = 0.048). The application of reducing diets with product elimination was found to be a more beneficial tool for changing anthropometric and thyroid parameters in women suffering from obesity and Hashimoto’s disease than classic reducing diets with the same energy values and macronutrient content.

Abstract
Introduction In the last 45 years, the worldwide rate of obesity has risen by nearly three-folds. Globally, 650 million adults are obese and more than 1.9 billion are overweight. The estimated prevalence of overweight and obesity in Pakistan was found to be 25% and obesity prevalence alone was 10.3% using the Asian-specific body mass index (BMI) criteria. According to the World Health Organization, overweight and obesity increase the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Objectives The aim of this retrospective observational study was to determine the burden of elevated BMI and its association with NCDs among patients presenting to a private endocrinology clinic. Study design This was a retrospective observational study conducted at Medicell Institute of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism (MIDEM), and the study duration was two years. Methodology Medical records of the patients who visited MIDEM from January 2017 to December 2018 were reviewed. Patients' data such as age (in years), gender, height (in cm), and weight (in kg), along with primary complaints and comorbidities were retrieved. BMI was calculated by dividing weight (in kg) by squared height (in m2). Results A total of 613 records were reviewed. The median age and BMI were 38 years (IQR=18 - 80 years) and 28.8 kg/m2 (IQR=24.6-33.05 kg/m2),respectively. Out of 613 patients, 10.6% were overweight and 72.6% were obese. Among 510 (83.2%) patients with elevated BMI (≥23 kg/m2), the most frequent associated NCDs were dyslipidemia (39.2%), diabetes (32.5%), hypertension (31.4%), thyroid disorders (28.6%), metabolic syndrome (25%), subfertility (14.9%), impaired glucose tolerance (12.7%) and autoimmune diseases (6.9%). On age- and gender-adjusted logistic regression model, the risk of dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes was significantly higher in overweight and obese patients. Conclusion This study demonstrated a high prevalence of obesity in patients visiting the endocrinology clinic. Obesity was identified as an independent risk factor for dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes. Future studies are suggested to determine the burden of obesity and establish its association with NCDs in the general population.

However, there are multiple indications that the impairment of the processes typically associated with cilia may have influence on the hematopoietic compartment and immunity. In this study, we analyze clinical data of BBS patients and corresponding mouse models carrying mutations in Bbs4 or Bbs18. We find that BBS patients have a higher prevalence of certain autoimmune diseases. Both BBS patients and animal models have altered red blood cell and platelet compartments, as well as elevated white blood cell levels. Some of the hematopoietic system alterations are associated with BBS-induced obesity. Moreover, we observe that the development and homeostasis of B cells in mice is regulated by the transport complex BBSome, whose dysfunction is a common cause of BBS. The BBSome limits canonical WNT signaling and increases CXCL12 levels in bone marrow stromal cells. Taken together, our study reveals a connection between a ciliopathy and dysregulated immune and hematopoietic systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study examined the relationship between thyroid function status and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in a Chinese population. METHODS Cross-sectional data were obtained from the Thyroid Disease, Iodine Nutrition and Diabetes Epidemiology (TIDE) Survey. A total of 62,408 subjects aged ≥18 years were enrolled. Differences in metabolic indicators and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome according to sex and thyroid function status were compared. Logistic regression was used to analyze the influence of thyroid function on metabolic syndrome and its components. RESULTS The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was generally higher in men than women. Overt hyperthyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism had a significant effect on metabolism in men. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and triglycerides (TGs) were significantly lower in men in the overt hyperthyroidism group, and BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and TGs were higher in men in the subclinical hypothyroidism group than men in the normal group. Overt and subclinical hypothyroidism had significant impacts on metabolic components in women. BMI, waist circumference, TGs, SBP and DBP in the subclinical and overt hypothyroidism groups were significantly higher than the euthyroid group in women. The relative risk of abdominal obesity and hypertriglyceridemia was increased in women with hypothyroidism. Thyroid dysfunction had different effects on metabolic syndrome and its components before and after menopause. CONCLUSION Thyroid function had important effects on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Women with hypothyroidism, especially post-menopausal women, had a higher risk of metabolic syndrome than men.

Association of thyroid peroxidase antibodies with anti-neuronal surface antibodies in health, depression and schizophrenia - Complementary linkage with somatic symptoms of major depression. Abstract
Hashimoto's thyroiditis has been associated with major depression (MD) and schizophrenia (Sz) in epidemiological studies. However, diagnostically relevant antibodies (Abs) against thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (Tg) do not act directly on neurons. We hypothesized that an increased prevalence of anti-brain-Abs in thyroid-Ab-carriers could be linked with MD and Sz even without clinically manifest Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Serum samples from 638 acutely-ill patients with MD, Sz or matched controls were systematically screened for TPO- and Tg-Abs, other endocrine-Abs and a spectrum of specific anti-brain-Abs (directed against neuronal cell surface, synaptic, other neuronal or glial proteins). Analyses were based on indirect immunofluorescence in biochip mosaics of frozen tissue sections and transfected HEK293 cells expressing respective recombinant target antigens. Psychopathology was assessed on admission and after 6 weeks treatment by HAMD-21 (in MD) or PANSS (in Sz). Seroprevalence of TPO- and/or Tg-Abs was comparable in ill and healthy individuals (MD ~10%, Sz ~7%, controls ~9%) but thyroid-Abs were associated with neuronal cell surface/synaptic-Abs (p = 0.005), particularly in schizophrenia. Thyroid Ab-positive MD patients showed higher HAMD-21 scores (particularly somatic symptoms) at baseline (p = 0.026) and better reduction of symptoms after 6 weeks (p = 0.049) than thyroid-Ab-negative patients. This was unrelated to antidepressant drug dosage, thyroid hormonal-, inflammation- and anti-brain-Ab-status. No link with PANSS scores was observed in Sz. In conclusion, the co-occurrence of thyroid-Abs and neuronal surface/synaptic-Abs may be associated with Sz. Future cerebrospinal fluid research may be promising to clarify if thyroid-Ab-associated neuronal-Abs reach the brain in Sz patients. Thyroid-Ab-related differences regarding disease-severity and -course in MD are currently unexplained, but may be caused by un-identified anti-brain-Abs or a direct action of TPO-Abs on astrocytes.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW During the last decades, obesity and autoimmune disorders have shown a parallel significant rise in industrialized countries. This review aims at providing a comprehensive update of the relationship between the adipose tissue in obesity and autoimmune disorders, highlighting the underlying mechanisms with a particular emphasis on adipokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines, the impaired B cell activity, and the production of natural and pathogenic autoantibody repertoire in the context of obesity. RECENT FINDINGS Obesity is related to a higher risk of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, while it may promote inflammatory bowel disorders and type 1 diabetes mellitus. Interestingly, subjects with obesity present more severe forms of these autoimmune disorders as well as decreased therapeutic response. Both obesity and autoimmune disorders present elevated levels of leptin, resistin, and visfatin. Autoantibody production, a hallmark of autoimmune disorders, has been demonstrated in obese animal models and human subjects. Obesity results in deficiencies of the human self-tolerance mechanisms by promoting pro-inflammatory processes, reducing Bregs as well as Tregs, and the latter resulting in increased Th17 and Th1 cells, creating the perfect milieu for the development of autoimmune disorders. More mechanistic, animal, and clinical studies are required to delineate the exact mechanisms underlying auto-reactivity in obesity as well as the adipose-immune crosstalk for potential successful therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Background: Immunological and hormonal disorders have undoubted influence on the development of atherosclerotic process. Autoimmune diseases accompanying type 1 diabetes (T1D) may additionally accelerate atherosclerosis progression and increase the risk of cardiovascular events in the future. The influence of subclinical hypothyroidism on the cardiovascular system, in particular, has recently aroused great interest. The aim of our study was to assess intima-media thickness (cIMT) of common carotid arteries and the occurrence of classical atherosclerosis risk factors together with selected new biomarkers of cardiovascular diseases in young patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus coexisting with Hashimoto's disease (HD). Patients and Methods: The study included 50 adolescents and young adults with T1D with mean age 17.1 ± 3 years, with mean diabetes duration of 10.5 ± 3.3 years, including 20 patients with diagnosed HD: T1D and HD(+), and 30 patients with no additional diseases: T1D and HD(-). Twenty-two healthy, age-matched volunteers formed control group (C). We analyzed mean HbA1c value from all years of disease, BMI, blood pressure, lipids, new biomarkers of atherosclerosis (hsCRP, adiponectin, myeloperoxidase, NT-proBNP peptide, vitamin D), and cIMT of common carotid arteries. Results: In the group of patients with T1D and HD(+), significantly higher BMI was found: 23.3 ± 4.4 vs. 21.28 ± 2.9 in group HD(-) and 19.65 ± 2.4 kg/m2 in group C (p = 0.003), and higher waist circumference: 79 ± 10.9 vs. 75.10 ± 7.6 in group HD(-) vs. 69.0 ± 7.4 cm in group C (p < 0.001). The mean value of HbA1c was higher in group T1D and HD(+): 8.8% than in group HD(-): 8.1% (p = 0.04). Significantly higher concentration of hsCRP and lower vitamin D were observed in T1D and HD(+) in comparison to T1D and HD(-) and the control group. The IMT index in the HD(+) group was 0.46 ± 0.05 mm and was comparable to the HD(-) group but significantly higher than in healthy controls: 0.41 ± 0.03 mm (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Young patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and with coexisting Hashimoto's thyroiditis have a higher BMI, a higher waist circumference, and a higher HbA1c value, which altogether may cause faster development of macroangiopathy in the near future. Additional risk for cardiovascular disease may result from low vitamin D and increased hsCRP concentration in this group of patients. Coexistence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis did not significantly affect the cIMT value in the studied population.

Abstract
A growing number of patients suffer from autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune thyroid disease. There has simultaneously been a significant increase in the prevalence of obesity worldwide. It is still an open question whether adiposity can directly influence activation of inflammatory processes affecting the thyroid in genetically predisposed individuals. Adipokines, biologically active substances derived from the adipocytes, belong to a heterogenic group of compounds involved in numerous physiological functions, including the maintenance of metabolism, hormonal balance, and immune response. Notably, the presence of obesity worsens the course of selected autoimmune diseases and impairs response to treatment. Moreover, the excess of body fat may result in the progression of autoimmune diseases. Nutritional status, body weight, and energy expenditure may influence thyroid hormone secretion. Interestingly, thyroid hormones might influence the activity of adipose tissue as metabolic alterations related to fat tissue are observed under pathological conditions in which there are deficits or overproduction of thyroid hormones. Functioning TSH receptors are expressed on adipocytes. Thermogenesis may presumably be stimulated by TSH binding to its receptor on brown adipocytes. There could be a bilateral interaction between the thyroid and adipose. Obesity may influence the onset and course of autoimmune disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Autoimmune hypothyroidism (AHT) is a common endocrine disorder. Although the exact cause of AHT is not yet understood, genetic factors may play a major role. Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) is a member of mitochondrial protein family involved in the regulation of cellular metabolism. An important functional polymorphism in the UCP2 gene, 45-bp insertion/deletion (ins/del) polymorphism, has been linked to certain clinical conditions. However, an association between the 45-bp ins/del polymorphism and AHT has not yet been established. METHODS In this study, about 259 blood samples were collected from, patients with AHT and age-matched healthy control subjects. DNA was extracted for UCP2 45-bp ins/del polymorphisms genotyping, using a standard polymerase chain reaction technique. The distribution of different genotypes was determined in both groups and possible association with AHT was also assessed by logistic regression analysis using the Del/Del variant as a reference genotype. RESULTS The frequency of the UCP2 45-bp ins/del polymorphism in the total study population was 49.04%, 40.15%, and 10.81% for Del/Del, Ins/Del, and Ins/Ins genotypes, respectively. The logistic regression analysis showed crude odds ratios (ORs), respectively, with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and P-values in codominant (Del/Ins) (OR = 1.53, CI = 0.89-2.60, P = 0.17), codominant (Ins/Ins) (OR = 0.75, CI = 0.34-1.74, P = 0.53), dominant (OR = 1.30, CI = 0.79-2.16, P = 0.37), and recessive (OR = 0.62, CI = 0.29-1.36, P = 0.30) inheritance models tested, where none of which were statistically significant. CONCLUSION Our data revealed the distribution of the UCP2 45-bp ins/del polymorphisms in Jazan area and confirmed the lack of association between these genetic variants and the development of AHT.

Abstract
Purpose: The expressions of antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin (TgAb) are very common in the sera of patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD). The relationship between thyroid autoantibodies and the occurrence of glucose and lipid metabolic disorders remains unclear. This study was performed to investigate the correlation between the presence of serum TPOAb/TgAb and those metabolic disorders in euthyroid general population. Methods: The data of this study were derived from the Thyroid Disease, Iodine status, and Diabetes National epidemiological (TIDE) survey from all 31 provinces of mainland China. A total of 17,964 euthyroid subjects including 5,802 males (4,000 with TPOAb-TgAb- and 1,802 with TPOAb+/TgAb+) and 12,162 females (8,000 with TPOAb-TgAb- and 4,162 with TPOAb+/TgAb+) were enrolled in this study. The blood glucose and lipid levels were compared between individuals with TPOAb-TgAb- and those with TPOAb+TgAb-, TPOAb-TgAb+, TPOAb+TgAb+. Results: Both fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentration and the proportion of individuals with impaired FBG (IFG) showed the decreased trends in TPOAb-TgAb+ males as compared with TPOAb-TgAb- men. There were significantly lower FBG and higher HDL-C levels as well as tendencies toward decreased incidences of IGT and hypertriglyceridemia in TPOAb-TgAb+ females when compared with TPOAb-TgAb- women. Binary logistic regression analysis further showed that serum TgAb single positivity in males was an independent protective factor for IFG with an OR of 0.691 (95% CI, 0.503-0.949). For females, serum TgAb single positivity was an independent protective factor for hypertriglyceridemia with an OR of 0.859 (95% CI, 0.748-0.987). Trend test showed that with the increase of serum TgAb level, there were significant decreases in the prevalence of IFG among the men with TSH ≤ 2.5 mIU/L and that of hypertriglyceridemia in the women, especially among non-obese females. Conclusion: Serum TgAb single positivity may imply a reduced risk of IFG in euthyroid men and that of hypertriglyceridemia in euthyroid women. The mechanisms for the independent protective roles of TgAb await further investigation.
