Abstract
Small bowel obstruction is a rare complication of endometriosis, a condition defined by the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterine cavity. The rectosigmoid junction is the most common site for intestinal endometriosis. However, small bowel involvement, particularly of the ileum, is less common, and is a much rarer location for endometriosis causing bowel obstruction. A 37-year-old woman with a medical history of endometriosis requiring multiple abdominal surgeries presented with signs and symptoms of small bowel obstruction. Computerized tomography indicated a transition point at the terminal ileum. Conservative treatment did not alleviate her symptoms, and so a right hemicolectomy was performed to relieve her obstruction. Endometriosis of the ileum was discovered on intraoperative pathology. The diagnosis of endometriosis and treatment options, especially as they relate to imaging techniques, are currently limited. There is a need for an improvement in the diagnosis of endometriosis. Advanced imaging techniques may lead to a more patient-centered approach to treatment in cases of small bowel obstruction. Prior to obstruction, serial imaging might catch the proliferation of endometrial tissue into the bowel. Conservative treatment might be tailored to endometriosis to help relieve obstruction and in surgical management resection margins might be adjusted to help preserve the bowel. This would improve patient quality of life by improving treatment.

Abstract
Endometriosis has been more common in recent decades as a result of improved diagnosis supported by enhanced clinical concepts and greater imaging tools. A multidisciplinary care strategy that extends beyond the cellular level is required for this complicated pathophysiological condition to enable patients to live disease-free lives. This case study features a young woman who was diagnosed with endometriosis and was anxious about future fertility. The condition eventually led to a series of events that defined the intricacy of the sickness involved and the accompanying complications that were better detected, and so, therapy was comparatively simplified by imaging, which helped manage the ailment and its issues. The related complications are well established; however, with the impending use of 3D imaging technology, the disease, its extent, and associated complications can be managed in a well-planned manner.

Abstract
(1) Background: The complete picture of the disease is not fully recognized and extends far beyond the pelvis. The disease's impacts lead to systemic inflammation, in turn resulting in sensitization to pain. The aim of this study was to check whether statistical correlations exist in women with endometriosis with regard to their experience of pain: headache, pelvic pain, temporomandibular joint pain, along with teeth clenching and the treatment of the disease. We constructed contingency tables, followed by Pearson's chi-square test and Cramer's V coefficient values. (2) Methods: A survey was conducted among 128 women aged 33.43 ± 5.79 with a diagnosis of endometriosis (disease duration 6.40 ± 5.88 years). (3) Results: There was a correlation between the occurrence of pain on the right and left sides of the pelvis and pain on the right and left sides of the temporomandibular joint, p-value = 0.0397, V = 0.2350, and between the presence of pelvic pain and the treatment of endometriosis, p-value = 0.0104, V = 0.3709, and between the presence of pain outside the pelvis and the treatment of endometriosis, p-value = 0.0311, V = 0.4549. There was a highly significant correlation between teeth clenching and temporomandibular joint pain, p-value = 0.0005, V = 0.3695. (4) Conclusions: The study revealed a correlation between pelvic endometriosis symptoms and symptoms in the temporomandibular joint.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Endometriosis cause decreases in life quality and pelvic pain in reproductive-age women. Methylation abnormalities played a functional role in the progression of endometriosis, this study aimed to explore the mechanisms mediated by abnormal methylation in the development of EMS.
Materials and methods
Next-generation sequencing dataset and methylation profiling dataset were used to screen out the key gene SFRP2. Western bolt, Real-time PCR, Aza-2?deoxycytidine treatment, luciferase reporter assay, Methylation-specific PCR , Bisulfite sequencing PCR and lentivirus infection were carried out to detect the methylation status and signaling pathway with the primary epithelial cells. Transwell assay and wound scratch assay were implemented to observe the differences of migration ability with the intervening with the expression of SFRP2.
Results
To define the role of the DNA methylation-regulated genes in the pathogenesis of EMS, we performed both DNA methylomic and expression analyses of ectopic endometrium and ectopic endometrium epithelial cells(EEECs) and found that SFRP2 is demethylated/upregulated in ectopic endometrium and EEECs. The expression of lentivirus carrying SFRP2 cDNA up-regulates the activity of Wnt signaling and the protein expression of ?-catenin in EEECs. SFRP2 impact on the invasion and migration of ectopic endometrium by modulating the activities of the Wnt/?-catenin signaling pathway. The invasion and migration ability of EEECs were significantly strengthened after demethylation treatment including 5-Aza and the knockdown of DNMT1.
Conclusion
In summary, the increased SFRP2 expression-induced Wnt/?-catenin signaling due to the demethylation of the SFRP2 promoter plays an important role in the pathogenesis of EMS, suggesting that SFRP2 might be a therapeutic target for EMS treatment.

Abstract
The sandwich format immunoassay is generally more sensitive and specific than more common assay formats, including direct, indirect, or competitive. A sandwich assay, however, requires two receptors to bind non-competitively to the target analyte. Typically, pairs of antibodies (Abs) or antibody fragments (Fabs) that are capable of forming a sandwiching with the target are identified through a slow, guess-and-check method with panels of candidate binding partners. Additionally, sandwich assays that are reliant on commercial antibodies can suffer from changes to reagent quality outside the researchers' control. This report presents a reimagined and simplified phage display selection protocol that directly identifies sandwich binding peptides and Fabs. The approach yielded two sandwich pairs, one peptide-peptide and one Fab-peptide sandwich for the cancer and Parkinson's disease biomarker DJ-1. Requiring just a few weeks to identify, the sandwich pairs delivered apparent affinity that is comparable to other commercial peptide and antibody sandwiches. The results reported here could expand the availability of sandwich binding partners for a wide range of clinical biomarker assays.

Abstract
In the pathogenesis of endometriosis, a number of pathological reactions occur. Proteins secreted in the urine are thought to interact with each other and stimulate the pathological processes in endometriosis. Identifying one or more proteins that are specific enough and could serve as biomarkers for endometriosis is both a challenge and a necessity that would facilitate diagnosis. The urine of patients treated in a tertiary university hospital between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 was analyzed. The studied group consists of patients who were treated surgically for endometriosis and in whom the diagnosis was confirmed by pathohistological analysis. The control group consists of patients who were operated for functional ovarian cysts. Urinary proteins were analyzed by chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). We identified 17 proteins in urine whose concentrations were statistically significantly different in the group with endometriosis (N = 16) compared with the control groups (N = 16). The detected proteins were classified into groups according to their function in invasion, migration and proliferation, proteolysis, immune system, cell adhesion and vascular system. For all mentioned proteins the difference in concentration is statistically significant p < 0.005. Proteins are secreted in the urine of patients with endometriosis that may be involved in the pathogenesis of the disease and are possible biomarkers for endometriosis.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) plays an important role in a variety of physiological and pathological processes of the female reproductive system. In recent years the relationship between OS and endometriosis has been of particular interest, and a theory has been suggested that OS may be a cause of endometriosis development. While the link between endometriosis and infertility is well established, minimal or mild stages of endometriosis are not considered to cause infertility. Increasing evidence of OS as a leading agent in the development of endometriosis has brought up a theory of minimal/mild endometriosis itself being one of the manifestations of high OS rather than a separate disease which directly causes infertility. Moreover, further development of the disease is thought to contribute to an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) thus leading to the progression of endometriosis itself as well as to other pathological processes in the female reproductive system. Therefore, in case of minimal or mild endometriosis, the less invasive treatment could be offered in order to stop the ongoing cycle of endometriosis-reinforced excess ROS production and to reduce their harmful effects. In this article the existing connection between OS, endometriosis, and infertility is explored.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Are there specific autoantibody profiles in patients with endometriosis that are different from those in controls? SUMMARY ANSWER This study did not reveal a significantly higher prevalence of autoantibodies in the studied groups of patients. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Various inflammatory factors are postulated to be involved in the pathomechanisms of endometriosis, and a potential link exists with autoimmune diseases, which may also play an important role. As the diagnosis of endometriosis remains invasive, it can only be confirmed using laparoscopy with histopathological examination of tissues. Numerous studies have focused on identifying useful biomarkers to confirm the disease, but without unequivocal effects. Autoantibodies are promising molecules that serve as potential prognostic factors. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION A multicentre, cross-sectional study was conducted over 18 months (between 2018 and 2019), at eight Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in several cities across Poland on 137 patients undergoing laparoscopic examination for the diagnosis of endometriosis. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTINGS, METHODS During laparoscopy, we obtained plasma samples from 137 patients and peritoneal fluid (PF) samples from 98 patients. Patients with autoimmune diseases were excluded from the study. Autoantibody profiling was performed using HuProt v3.1 human proteome microarrays. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE We observed no significant differences in the expression of autoantibodies in the plasma or PF between the endometriosis and control groups. The study revealed that in the PF of women with Stage II endometriosis, compared with other stages, there were significantly higher reactivity signals for ANAPC15 and GABPB1 (adj. P < 0.016 and adj. P < 0.026, respectively; logFC > 1 in both cases). Comparison of the luteal and follicular phases in endometriosis patients revealed that levels of NEIL1 (adj. P < 0.029), MAGEB4 (adj. P < 0.029), and TNIP2 (adj. P < 0.042) autoantibody signals were significantly higher in the luteal phase than in the follicular phase in PF samples of patients with endometriosis. No differences were observed between the two phases of the cycle in plasma or between women with endometriosis and controls. Clustering of PF and plasma samples did not reveal unique autoantibody profiles for endometriosis; however, comparison of PF and plasma in the same patient showed a high degree of concordance. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Although this study was performed using the highest-throughput protein array available, it does not cover the entire human proteome and cannot be used to study potentially promising post-translational modifications. Autoantibody levels depend on numerous factors, such as infections; therefore the autoantibody tests should be repeated for more objective results. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Although endometriosis has been linked to different autoimmune diseases, it is unlikely that autoimmune responses mediated by specific autoantibodies play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of this inflammatory disease. Our study shows that in searching for biomarkers of endometriosis, it may be more efficient to use higher-throughput proteomic microarrays, which may allow the detection of potentially new biomarkers. Only research on such a scale, and possibly with different technologies, can help discover biomarkers that will change the method of endometriosis diagnosis. Abstract
Endometriosis has a wide range of clinical manifestations, and the disease course is unpredictable, making the diagnosis a challenging task. Despite significant advances in the pathophysiology of endometriosis and various proposed theories, the exact etiology is not fully understood and is still unknown. The most commonly used biomarker of endometriosis is CA-125, however, it is nonspecific and is applied for cancers diagnosis. Therefore, the development of reliable noninvasive diagnostic tests for the early diagnosis of endometriosis remains one of the top priorities. Omics technologies are very promising approaches for constructing diagnostic models and biomarker discovery. Their use can greatly facilitate the study of such a complex disease as endometriosis. Nowadays, powerful analytical platforms commonly used in omics, such as gas and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, have proven to be a promising tools for biomarker discovery. The aim of this review is to summarize the various features of the analytical approaches, practical challenges and features of gas and liquid chromatography with MS and NMR spectroscopy (including sample processing protocols, technological advancements, and methodology) used for profiling of metabolites, lipids, peptides and proteins in physiological fluids and tissues from patients with endometriosis. In addition, this report devotes special attention to the issue of how comprehensive analyses of these profiles can effectively contribute to the study of endometriosis. The search query included reports published between 2012 and 2022 years in PubMed, Web-of-Science, SCOPUS, Science Direct.

Abstract
Endometriosis, a benign gynecologic and chronic inflammatory disease, is defined by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus characterized mainly by pelvic pain and infertility. Because endometriosis affects approximately 10% of females, it represents a significant socioeconomic burden worldwide having tremendous impact on daily quality of life. Accurate and prompt diagnosis is crucial for the management of this debilitating disorder. Unfortunately, diagnosis is typically delayed to lack of specific symptoms and readily accessible biomarkers. Although histopathologic examination remains the current gold standard, this approach is highly invasive and not applicable for early screening. Recent work has focused on the identification of reliable biomarkers including immunologic, ie, immune cells, antibodies and cytokines, as well as genetic and biochemical markers, ie, microRNAs, lncRNAs, circulating and mitochondrial nucleic acids, along with some hormones, glycoproteins and signaling molecules. Confirmatory research studies are, however, needed to more fully establish these markers in the diagnosis, progression and staging of these endometrial lesions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Endometriosis (EMT) is a chronic benign disease with high prevalence. This study investigated the diagnostic value of serum miR-17-5p, miR-424-5p, and their combined expressions for EMT. METHODS Total 80 EMT patients of reproductive age who underwent laparoscopy or laparotomy and were confirmed by pathological examination were included as the study subjects, and another 80 healthy women of reproductive age receiving gynecological examination and ultrasonography with no pelvic abnormalities were selected as the control group. The whole blood samples of enrolled subjects were collected and clinical characteristics were recorded. The miR-17-5p, miR-424-5p, VEGFA, IL-4, and IL-6 levels in the serum were measured. ROC curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of miR-17-5p and miR-424-5p expressions for EMT. Pearson correlation was performed to analyze the correlation of miR-17-5p and miR-424-5p with clinical indexes in EMT patients. RESULTS miR-17-5p and miR-424-5p were downregulated in EMT patients. For diagnosing EMT, the AUC of miR-17-5p was 0.865 and cutoff value was 0.890 (91.3% sensitivity and 85% specificity), the AUC of miR-424-5p was 0.737, and cutoff value was 0.915 (98.8% sensitivity and 61.2% specificity), and the AUC of miR-424-5p combined with miR-17-5p was 0.938 and cutoff value was 2.205 (93.8% sensitivity and 88.7% specificity), with the diagnostic efficacy higher than miR-424-5p or miR-17-5p alone. miR-17-5p and miR-424-5p expressions were negatively correlated with dysmenorrhea, infertility, pelvic pain, and rASRM stage, but not with age, BMI, menstrual disorder, and nulliparity. VEGFA, IL-4, IL-6, and CA-125 were increased in EMT patients and were inversely associated with miR-17-5p and miR-424-5p. CONCLUSION miR-424-5p combined with miR-17-5p has high diagnostic efficacy for EMT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore potential biomarkers indicating endometriosis (EM). MATERIALS AND METHODS A proteomics method and combined quantitative transcriptomics were adopted to highlight markers in the EM. Venn analysis was used to integrate the ribonucleic acid sequencing (RNA-seq) and protein profiles. Promising candidate markers were tested by enzyme-related immunosorbent assay. RESULTS A sum of 979 mRNAs and 39 proteins were tested to be significantly differentially expression in the standard cluster compared with the EM cluster. Venn analysis showed a filtered signature of only two down-regulated molecules in the EM group, i.e. fetuin B (FETUB) and serpin family C member 1 (SERPINC1); the latter showed a big variance between the control category and the EM set in the authentication test. CONCLUSION SERPINC1 may be a useful possible biomarker for the analysis of EM.

Abstract
Background Endometriosis (EM) is a common gynecological disorder that often leads to irregular menstruation and infertility. The pathogenesis of EM remains unclear and delays in diagnosis are common. Thus, it is urgent to explore potential biomarkers and underlying molecular mechanisms for EM diagnosis and therapies. Methods Three EM-related datasets (GSE11691, GSE25628, and GSE86534) were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) which were integrated into a combined dataset after removing batch effect. Differentially expressed immune cell-related genes were obtained by CIBERSORT, WGCNA, and the identification of differentially expressed genes. Random forest model (RF), support vector machine model (SVM), and generalized linear model (GLM) were then constructed and the biomarkers for EM were determined. A nomogram evaluating the risk of disease was constructed and the validity was assessed by the calibration curve, DCA curve, and clinical impact curve. Single-gene Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA)was performed to explore the molecular mechanisms of biomarkers. The ceRNA regulatory network of biomarkers was created by Cytoscape and potential target drugs were obtained in the DGIdb database (Drug-Gene Interaction database).The expression levels of biomarkers from clinical samples was quantified by RT-qPCR. Results The ratio of eight immune cells was significantly different between the eutopic and ectopic endometrium samples. A total of eight differentially expressed immune cell-related genes were investigated. The SVM model was a relatively suitable model for the prediction of EM and five genes (CXCL12, PDGFRL, AGTR1, PTGER3, and S1PR1) were selected from the model as biomarkers. The calibration curve, DCA curve, and clinical impact curve indicated that the nomogram based on the five biomarkers had a robust ability to predict disease. Single gene GSEA result suggested that all five biomarkers were involved in labyrinthine layer morphogenesis and transmembrane transport-related biological processes in EM. A ceRNA regulatory network containing 184 nodes and 251 edges was constructed. Seven drugs targeting CXCL12, 49 drugs targeting AGTR1, 16 drugs targeting PTGER3, and 21 drugs targeting S1PR1 were extracted as potential drugs for EM therapy. Finally, the expression of PDGFRL and S1PR1 in clinical samples was validated by RT-qPCR, which was consistent with the result of public database. Conclusions In summary, we identified five biomarkers (CXCL12, PDGFRL, AGTR1, PTGER3, and S1PR1) and constructed diagnostic model, furthermore predicted the potential therapeutic drugs for EM. Collectively, these findings provide new insights into EM diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a common gynecological disease, that often leads to pain and infertility. At present, the specific pathogenesis of endometriosis has not been clarified, but it may be closely related to an imbalance of sex hormones in the body, ectopic hyperplasia stimulated by immune inflammation, and invasion and escape based on tumor characteristics. Gut microbiota is associated with many inflammatory diseases. With the further study of the gut microbiota, people are paying increasing attention to its relationship with endometriosis. Studies have shown that there is an association between the gut microbiota and endometriosis. The specific ways and mechanisms by which the gut microbiota participates in endometriosis may involve estrogen, immune inflammation, and tumor characteristics, among others. Therefore, in the future, regulating gut microbiota disorders in various ways can help in the treatment of endometriosis patients. This study reviewed the research on the gut microbiota and endometriosis in order to provide ideas for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a prevalent gynecological condition with deleterious effects on women's quality of life in terms of physical, emotional, and social compromise. It is an inflammatory disease characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus, and its presentation varies from superficial peritoneal lesions to deep infiltrative endometriosis and ovarian endometrioma. In our previous study, endometriotic lesions were implicated in cellular senescence as their inflammatory pattern could potentially compromise surrounding tissue integrity, thereby inducing a senescent state in cells. P16Ink4a and lamin b1 are biomarkers used to assess cellular senescence. Indirect immunofluorescence staining is a broad technique used to assess cellular structure and behavior driven by protein-protein interactions that provide valuable information about cell functioning. The etiopathogeny of endometriosis is not completely understood and diagnostic approaches still rely on invasive methods; therefore, it is important to use validated methods to increase our understanding of the disease and the development of novel diagnostic tools. However, indirect immunofluorescence protocols are often tissue specific and, if neglected, can lead to misinterpretation of results. Moreover, no valid endometriotic tissue-specific colocalization immunofluorescence protocols have been established. Thus, we have validated a well-funded and suitable protocol to allow precise evaluation of the three presentations of endometriosis lesions using indirect immunofluorescence aiming to support further investigations in endometriosis lesions.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Endometriosis is a complex benign gynaecologic condition with heterogenous presentations and a large impact on the global healthcare system and on the quality of life for millions of women. Currently, the gold standard for diagnosis involves direct visualization of lesions during surgery confirmed by histopathological diagnosis, resulting in an average delay in its initial diagnosis of 8-10 years. Therefore, the search for noninvasive diagnostic testing options has been subject to a large body of research. RECENT FINDINGS Multiple potential biomarkers have been explored for noninvasive testing for endometriosis, including glycoproteins, inflammatory cytokines, immunological molecules, angiogenesis markers, hormones, micro RNAs (miRNAs), proteomics, metabolomics, genomics and the microbiome. SUMMARY Although there are challenges to consider, areas for real promise and advancement in the noninvasive diagnosis of endometriosis are currently being explored with real promise in the area of miRNAs, proteomics, metabolomics, genomics and the microbiome.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a condition characterized by implants of endometrial tissues into extrauterine sites, mostly within the pelvic peritoneum. The prevalence of endometriosis is under-diagnosed and is estimated to account for 5-10% of all women of reproductive age. The goal of this study was to develop a model for endometriosis based on the UK-biobank (UKB) and re-assess the contribution of known risk factors to endometriosis. We partitioned the data into those diagnosed with endometriosis (5924; ICD-10: N80) and a control group (142,723). We included over 1000 variables from the UKB covering personal information about female health, lifestyle, self-reported data, genetic variants, and medical history prior to endometriosis diagnosis. We applied machine learning algorithms to train an endometriosis prediction model. The optimal prediction was achieved with the gradient boosting algorithms of CatBoost for the data-combined model with an area under the ROC curve (ROC-AUC) of 0.81. The same results were obtained for women from a mixed ethnicity population of the UKB (7112; ICD-10: N80). We discovered that, prior to being diagnosed with endometriosis, affected women had significantly more ICD-10 diagnoses than the average unaffected woman. We used SHAP, an explainable AI tool, to estimate the marginal impact of a feature, given all other features. The informative features ranked by SHAP values included irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and the length of the menstrual cycle. We conclude that the rich population-based retrospective data from the UKB are valuable for developing unified machine learning endometriosis models despite the limitations of missing data, noisy medical input, and participant age. The informative features of the model may improve clinical utility for endometriosis diagnosis.

Abstract
Introduction: Endometriosis is a condition that mainly concerns women of reproductive age, which causes several problems, including subfertility. The phenotypic presentation of endometriosis is defined by a complex interplay between genetic profile, immunological and mechanical factors. In this literature review we examine the causality between endometriosis and subfertility, outlining possible mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis. Aim: The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review in order to identify the correlation between endometriosis and subfertility through possible mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis-associated subfertility and treatment. Methods:A search in Medline/PubMed was done, using the terms "endometriosis" and "subfertility", to identify the most relevant studies that were published during the last six years. Results:Pathogenesis of endometriosis-associated subfertility is not clear yet, although some data indicate that there are several factors that could affect a patient's fertility. Involved mechanisms include mechanical obstruction such as ovarian tubal dysfunction and the abnormal peritoneal microenvironment, genetic, and epigenetic mechanisms, and immunological traits. It is fundamental to better understand these mechanisms in order to improve the therapeutic approach. Conclusions:The clinical management of endometiosis-related subfertility has to be improved. It is important to consider a change in the classification of endometriosis and, more importantly, an effort to avoid surgical procedures. There is a crucial need for effective protocols and novel targets for specific diagnosis and treatment. Consequently, the importance of understanding pathogenesis and genetic mechanisms is underlined. Future researchers should focus on novel non-invasive treatment methods that target specific pathogenic pathways.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE (1) To characterize the cytokine expression profiles of endometriosis related infertile women in comparison to fertile women with endometriosis; (2) to investigate the correlation of the cytokine levels from different tissues. METHODS 100 stage IV endometriosis patients were recruited and grouped by infertility status (n = 50, separately). Concentrations of TNF-α, TGF-β1, IL-10, and IL-17A from the serum, peritoneal fluid (PF), eutopic, and ectopic endometrium samples were measured. RESULTS (1) In the infertile group, the concentrations of IL-10 within serum, PF and eutopic endometrium were all significantly higher (p = .022 and <.01, .013, respectively), the levels of TGF-β1 in serum and eutopic endometrium samples were both higher (p = .025 and p < .01), the levels of IL-17A in the PF, eutopic, and ectopic endometrium were all lower (p < .01, all). (2) Significant positive correlation was observed between IL-17A from PF and the ectopic endometrium (p = .014), IL-17A from PF and eutopic endometrium (p < .01). The PF IL-10 levels positively correlated with those in the serum (p = .007). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study comparing the levels of cytokines within four different tissues of endometriosis women with or without infertility. The study revealed that endometriosis-related infertile women possess significant differences in cytokine levels in comparison to fertile women with endometriosis. The levels of inflammatory factors from different tissues had certain positive correlations. Infertility may indicate the progress of the disease.

Abstract
Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent inflammatory disease affecting women in their reproductive age. Due to non-specific symptoms, women with endometriosis are often misdiagnosed or are accurately diagnosed only after several years. Diagnosis of peritoneal endometriosis is especially challenging and relies only on laparoscopic surgery. To date, different molecules have been proposed as potential non-invasive biomarkers of endometriosis; however, none have been confirmed as clinically useful. Therefore, this study aimed to discover novel plasma biomarker candidates for peritoneal endometriosis using an antibody array platform. This study included patients with endometriosis-like symptoms characterized by the absence (controls) or presence of peritoneal endometriosis (cases) after laparoscopic surgery and histological evaluation. Patients were further divided into secretory and proliferative groups, according to the phase of their menstrual cycle. Their plasma samples were collected and analyzed on an antibody array platform targeting more than 1350 proteins with over 1820 antibodies. In the proliferative group, the analysis revealed three differential proteins between cases and controls: ITB3, ITA2B2, and ACVL-1. In the secretory group, none of the examined proteins reached the log-fold change (logFC) and significance thresholds simultaneously. The potential of the identified differential proteins as plasma biomarker candidates for peritoneal endometriosis should be evaluated on a larger cohort, and their role in endometriosis should be investigated in further studies.

Abstract
Aims: To evaluate BRAK and APRIL in serum samples from healthy patients and an ovarian tumor group and analyze their effective value as biomarkers. Materials & methods: BRAK and APRIL were measured in 197 serum samples including 34 healthy controls, 48 patients with benign ovarian cysts and 115 patients with ovarian cancer, and the best statistical cutoff values were calculated. Then, the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value for selected cutoff points were assessed. Results: The healthy control group had statistically significant higher BRAK and lower APRIL than the ovarian tumor group. BRAK was excellent for differentiating healthy patients from patients with ovarian tumors, showing area under the receiver operating characteristic curve 0.983, 98.16% sensitivity and 100% specificity. When BRAK was combined with APRIL and CA-125, it also played a role in distinguishing benign cysts from malignancies with area under the curve 0.864, 81.74% sensitivity and 79.17% specificity. Conclusions: BRAK and APRIL are good candidates for ovarian tumor biomarkers.

Abstract
Endometriosis (EM) is a hormone-dependent gynecological disease associated with chronic pelvic pain and altered immuno-inflammatory processes. It shares some cancer-like characteristics such as increased proline biosynthesis and activated glutaminolysis. Both proline and glutamine are interconvertible metabolically, and studies have shown their roles in cancer cell metabolic reprogramming, redox homeostasis, occurrence/development of endometrial carcinoma, and its further progression toward the malignant state. So based on this, we hypothesized that the circulatory proline to glutamine ratio (PQR) would be altered in EM and may serve as an indicative biomarker to improve the clinical diagnosis of EM. In present study, the circulatory-PQR levels were estimated for 39 EM patients and 48 age matched healthy female subjects using 800 MHz NMR spectroscopy. Among 39 EM patients, 15 were in the clinical stages I to II and referred to here as moderate EM (MEM) patients and 24 were in the clinical stages III to IV and referred here as severe EM (SEM) patients. The circulatory-PQR levels were significantly increased in EM patients (0.99 ± 0.13 μM in MEM; 1.39 ± 0.22 μM in SEM) compared to normal control (NC) subjects (0.52 ± 0.05 μM in NC). Further, the circulatory PQR levels exhibit the highest diagnostic potential with area under receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve values equal to 0.87 ± 0.04 [95%CI = 0.79-0.96] for MEM and 0.89 ± 0.04 [95% CI = 0.82-0.96] for SEM. These results suggested that circulatory-PQR has significant potential to serve as a noninvasive biomarker for diagnostic/prognostic screening of EM and further underscored the importance of these two nonessential amino acids (proline and glutamine) in cancer metabolism.

Abstract
Endometriosis, characterized by endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus, is thought to affect 2-10% of women of reproductive age: representing about 190 million women worldwide. Numerous studies have evaluated the diagnostic value of blood biomarkers but with disappointing results. Thus, the gold standard for diagnosing endometriosis remains laparoscopy. We performed a prospective trial, the ENDO-miRNA study, using both Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), to analyze the current human miRNome to differentiate between patients with and without endometriosis, and to develop a blood-based microRNA (miRNA) diagnostic signature for endometriosis. Here, we present the first blood-based diagnostic signature obtained from a combination of two robust and disruptive technologies merging the intrinsic quality of miRNAs to condense the endometriosis phenotype (and its heterogeneity) with the modeling power of AI. The most accurate signature provides a sensitivity, specificity, and Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 96.8%, 100%, and 98.4%, respectively, and is sufficiently robust and reproducible to replace the gold standard of diagnostic surgery. Such a diagnostic approach for this debilitating disorder could impact recommendations from national and international learned societies.

Abstract
Background. Endometriosis (EMs) is a benign chronic condition that tends to recur in women of childbearing age, with an incidence of approximately 10%. It is a multifactorial disease for which the pathogenesis is currently unclear. This study is aimed at investigating the expression and clinical significance of tRNA-derived small RNA (tsRNA), a novel noncoding small RNA with potential regulatory functions, in endometriosis. Methods. The tRF/tiRNA expression profiles in endometrial tissues from three pairs of endometriosis patients and controls were detected by tRF&tiRNA PCR microarray technology and then verified by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The target genes and target sites of TRF396, tiRNA-5030-GlnTTG-3, TRF308, and TRF320 were predicted by miRanda, and the network diagram of their interaction with miRNA was drawn. The impact of tRNA-derived fragments on the pathogenesis of endometriosis was analyzed using the Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). Results. Two upregulated and 19 downregulated tRNA-derived fragments were identified. The qRT-PCR results of 2 upregulated and 2 downregulated RNA-derived fragments were consistent with the RNA Seq data. The OR2B4 gene related to TRF396, the DGAT1 gene related to tiRNA-5030-GlnTTG-3, the KLF16 gene of TRF308, and the RNF213 gene of TRF320 had significant correlations. Gene Ontology and pathway analysis showed that the target genes of TRF396 and tiRNA-5030-GlnTTG-3 were mainly involved in the intrinsic components of the membrane and the overall composition of the membrane in cell components; molecular functions mainly involve olfactory conduction and G protein-coupled receptor activity. In the biological process, it was mainly involved in the detection of sensory stimuli. The target genes of TRF308 and TRF320 were mainly involved in the intracellular part; molecular functions are mainly related to DNA binding transcription factor activity and protein binding and mainly related to biological regulation of biological processes. Pathway analysis showed that the RAP1 signaling pathway and the AXON GUIDANCE signaling pathway may participate in the progression of endometriosis. Conclusion. The differential expression of tRF/tiRNA in endometriosis may be related to the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Furthermore, tRF/tiRNA may be a biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of EMs in the future.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Endometriosis is a gynecologic disease affecting approximately 10% of reproductive age women, around 21-47% of women presenting subfertility and 71-87% of women with chronic pelvic pain. Main symptoms are chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and infertility that seem to be well controlled by oral contraceptive pill, progestogens, GnRh antagonists. The aim of this review was to illustrate the modern diagnosis of endometriosis during pregnancy, to evaluate the evolution of endometriotic lesions during pregnancy and the incidence of adverse outcomes. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION Published literature was retrieved through searches of the database PubMed (National Center for Biotechnology Information, US National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD, USA). We searched for all original articles published in English through April 2020 and decided to extract every notable information for potential inclusion in this review. The search included the following MeSH search terms, alone or in combination: "endometriosis" combined with "endometrioma," "biomarkers," "complications," "bowel," "urinary tract," "uterine rupture," "spontaneous hemoperitoneum in pregnancy" and more "adverse pregnancy outcome," "preterm birth," "miscarriage," "abruption placentae," "placenta previa," "hypertensive disorder," "preeclampsia," "fetal grow restriction," "small for gestation age," "cesarean delivery." EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS Pregnancy in women with endometriosis does not always lead to disappearance of symptoms and decrease in the size of endometriotic lesions, but it may be possible to observe a malignant transformation of ovarian endometriotic lesions. Onset of complications may be caused by many factors: chronic inflammation, adhesions, progesterone resistance and a dysregulation of genes involved in the embryo implantation. As results, the pregnancy can be more difficult because of endometriosis related complications (spontaneous hemoperitoneum [SH], bowel complications, etc.) or adverse outcomes like preterm birth, FGR, hypertensive disorders, obstetrics hemorrhages (placenta previa, abruptio placenta), miscarriage or cesarean section. Due to insufficient knowledge about its pathogenesis, currently literature data are contradictory and do not show a strong correlation between endometriosis and these complications except for miscarriage and cesarean delivery. CONCLUSIONS Future research should focus on the potential biological pathways underlying these relationships in order to inform patients planning a birth about possible complications during pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endometriosis diagnosis constitutes a considerable economic burden for the healthcare system with diagnostic tools often inconclusive with insufficient accuracy. We sought to analyze the human miRNAome to define a saliva-based diagnostic miRNA signature for endometriosis. METHODS We performed a prospective ENDO-miRNA study involving 200 saliva samples obtained from 200 women with chronic pelvic pain suggestive of endometriosis collected between January and June 2021. The study consisted of two parts: (i) identification of a biomarker based on genome-wide miRNA expression profiling by small RNA sequencing using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and (ii) development of a saliva-based miRNA diagnostic signature according to expression and accuracy profiling using a Random Forest algorithm. RESULTS Among the 200 patients, 76.5% (n = 153) were diagnosed with endometriosis and 23.5% (n = 47) without (controls). Small RNA-seq of 200 saliva samples yielded ~4642 M raw sequencing reads (from ~13.7 M to ~39.3 M reads/sample). Quantification of the filtered reads and identification of known miRNAs yielded ~190 M sequences that were mapped to 2561 known miRNAs. Of the 2561 known miRNAs, the feature selection with Random Forest algorithm generated after internally cross validation a saliva signature of endometriosis composed of 109 miRNAs. The respective sensitivity, specificity, and AUC for the diagnostic miRNA signature were 96.7%, 100%, and 98.3%. CONCLUSIONS The ENDO-miRNA study is the first prospective study to report a saliva-based diagnostic miRNA signature for endometriosis. This could contribute to improving early diagnosis by means of a non-invasive tool easily available in any healthcare system.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a gynecological disease prevalent in women of reproductive age, and it is characterized by the ectopic presence and growth of the eutopic endometrium. The pathophysiology and diagnostic biomarkers of endometriosis have not yet been comprehensively determined. To discover molecular markers and pathways underlying the pathogenesis of endometriosis, we identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in three Gene Expression Omnibus microarray datasets (GSE11691, GSE23339, and GSE7305) and performed gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analyses. We also validated the identified genes via immunohistochemical analysis of tissues obtained from patients with endometriosis or healthy volunteers. A total of 118 DEGs (79 upregulated and 39 downregulated) were detected in each dataset with a lower (fold change) FC cutoff (log2|FC| > 1), and 17 DEGs (11 upregulated and six downregulated) with a higher FC cutoff (log2|FC| > 2). KEGG and GO functional analyses revealed enrichment of signaling pathways associated with inflammation, complement activation, cell adhesion, and extracellular matrix in endometriotic tissues. Upregulation of seven genes (C7, CFH, FZD7, LY96, PDLIM3, PTGIS, and WISP2) out of 17 was validated via comparison with external gene sets, and protein expression of four genes (LY96, PDLIM3, PTGIS, and WISP2) was further analyzed by immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis. Based on these results, we suggest that TLR4/NF-κB and Wnt/frizzled signaling pathways, as well as estrogen receptors, regulate the progression of endometriosis. These pathways may be therapeutic and diagnostic targets for endometriosis.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a major health care challenge because many young women with endometriosis go undetected for an extended period, which may lead to pain sensitization. Clinical tools to better identify candidates for laparoscopy-guided diagnosis are urgently needed. Since endometriosis has a strong genetic component, there is a growing interest in using genetics as part of the clinical risk assessment. The aim of this work was to investigate the discriminative ability of a polygenic risk score (PRS) for endometriosis using three different cohorts: surgically confirmed cases from the Western Danish endometriosis referral Center (249 cases, 348 controls), cases identified from the Danish Twin Registry (DTR) based on ICD-10 codes from the National Patient Registry (140 cases, 316 controls), and replication analysis in the UK Biobank (2,967 cases, 256,222 controls). Patients with adenomyosis from the DTR (25 cases) and from the UK Biobank (1,883 cases) were included for comparison. The PRS was derived from 14 genetic variants identified in a published genome-wide association study with more than 17,000 cases. The PRS was associated with endometriosis in surgically confirmed cases [odds ratio (OR) = 1.59, p = 2.57× 10−7] and in cases from the DTR biobank (OR = 1.50, p = 0.0001). Combining the two Danish cohorts, each standard deviation increase in PRS was associated with endometriosis (OR = 1.57, p = 2.5× 10−11), as well as the major subtypes of endometriosis; ovarian (OR = 1.72, p = 6.7× 10−5), infiltrating (OR = 1.66, p = 2.7× 10−9), and peritoneal (OR = 1.51, p = 2.6 × 10−3). These findings were replicated in the UK Biobank with a much larger sample size (OR = 1.28, p < 2.2× 10−16). The PRS was not associated with adenomyosis, suggesting that adenomyosis is not driven by the same genetic risk variants as endometriosis. Our results suggest that a PRS captures an increased risk of all types of endometriosis rather than an increased risk for endometriosis in specific locations. Although the discriminative accuracy is not yet sufficient as a stand-alone clinical utility, our data demonstrate that genetics risk variants in form of a simple PRS may add significant new discriminatory value. We suggest that an endometriosis PRS in combination with classical clinical risk factors and symptoms could be an important step in developing an urgently needed endometriosis risk stratification tool.

Abstract
Many studies have tried to understand the mechanism of endometriosis and its manner of manifestation. However, the only method of diagnosis considered as the gold standard in endometriosis is an invasive method called exploratory laparoscopy. Hence, there is a need to identify non-invasive or minimally invasive methods to minimize patients' suffering, thus increasing their addressability at the earliest possible staging of the disease, and to diagnose this condition as soon as possible. miRNAs (microRNAs) and lncRNAs (long-noncoding RNAs) are potential non-invasive diagnostic methods for endometriosis. Multiple clinical trials indicate that miRNA can be used as a non-invasive method in the diagnosis and differentiation of endometriosis stages.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a female reproductive disorder characterized by growth of uterine cells and tissue in distant sites. Around 2-10% of women experience this condition during reproductive age, 35-50% of whom encounter fertility issues or pain. To date, there are no established methods for its early diagnosis and treatment, other than surgical procedures and scans. It is difficult to identify the disease at its onset, unless symptoms such as infertility and/or pain are present. Determining the mechanisms involved in its pathogenesis is vital, not only to pave the way for early identification, but also for disease management and development of less invasive but successful treatment strategies. Endometriosis is characterized by cell proliferation, propagation, evasion of immunosurveillance, and invasive metastasis. This review reports the underlying mechanisms that are individually or collectively responsible for disease establishment and evolution. Treatment of endometriosis mainly involves hormone therapies, which may be undesirable or have their own repercussions. It is therefore important to devise alternative strategies that are both effective and cause fewer side effects. Use of phytochemicals may be one of them. This review focuses on pharmacological inhibitors that can be therapeutically investigated in terms of their effects on signaling pathways and/or mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a common non-malignant gynecological disease that significantly compromises fertility and quality of life of the majority of patients. The gold standard for diagnosis is visual inspection of the pelvic organs by surgical laparoscopy and there are no biomarkers that would allow non-invasive diagnosis. The pathogenesis of endometriosis is not completely understood, thus analysis of peritoneal fluid might contribute in this respect. Our prospective case-control study included 58 patients undergoing laparoscopy due to infertility, 32 patients with peritoneal endometriosis (cases) and 26 patients with unexplained primary infertility (controls). Discovery proteomics using antibody microarrays that covered 1360 proteins identified 16 proteins with different levels in cases versus the control patients. The validation using an ELISA approach confirmed significant differences in the levels of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) and transforming growth factor-β-induced protein ig-h3 (TGFBI) and nonsignificant differences in angiotensinogen (AGT). A classification model based on a linear support vector machine revealed AUC of > 0.83, sensitivity of 0.81 and specificity of 1.00. Differentially expressed proteins represent candidates for diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers or drug targets. Our findings have brought new knowledge that will be helpful in the understanding of the pathophysiology of endometriosis and warrant further studies in blood samples.

Abstract
RESEARCH QUESTION Which is the optimal extraction method for isolating and quantifying circulating cell-free DNA (ccfDNA) from patients with endometriosis? Endometriosis is a common benign disease, associated with pain, infertility and reduced quality of life. Endometriosis is also a known risk factor for various cancers. Robust biomarkers for early detection and prediction of prognosis, however, are lacking. CcfDNA is an easy to obtain biomarker associated with prognosis of cancer patients and enables non-invasive analysis of somatic mutations. Recently, elevated levels of ccfDNA were detected in patients with endometriosis. DESIGN Two different ccfDNA extraction methods were compared: Maxwell RSC ccfDNA plasma kit (Maxwell) and QiAamp minElute ccfDNA mini kit (QIAamp). The ccfDNA and circulating mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) quantities from 34 patients diagnosed with endometriosis were analysed. Fluorometric measurement and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) of short and long ALU and mtDNA fragments were used to quantiy ccfDNA. RESULTS The yield of ccfDNA isolated with the Maxwell method was significantly higher compared with the QIAamp method (P < 0.0001). Integrity of ccfDNA was significantly higher in the QIAamp isolate (P < 0.0001). Recovered mtDNA was not significantly different between both extraction methods used. CONCLUSIONS The choice of extraction method can significantly influence the ccfDNA output and integrity. Both methods, however, enabled isolation of sufficient ccfDNA for further downstream applications. With this approach, isolation of ccfDNA could enable the non-invasive detection and analysis of somatic mutation within endometriosis tissue.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a disease that affects women of reproductive age and has a significantly negative impact on their well-being. The main symptoms are dysmenorrhoea, chronic pelvic pain and infertility. In many patients the diagnostic process is very long and can take up to 8-12 years. Laparoscopy, an invasive method, is still necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Therefore, development of more effective diagnostic markers appears to be of the utmost importance for early diagnosis of endometriosis and provision of appropriate treatment. From a clinical point of view, detection of early-stage endometriosis in asymptomatic patients is an ideal situation since early diagnosis of endometriosis may delay the onset of symptoms as well as prevent progression and complications. In the meantime, Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125) is still the most frequently studied and used marker. Other glycoproteins, growth factors and immune markers seem to play an important role. However, the search for an ideal endometriosis marker is still underway. Further studies into the pathogenesis of endometriosis will help to identify biomarkers or sets of biomarkers with the potential to improve and speed up the diagnostic process in a non-invasive way.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a complex and chronic estrogen-dependent disease, affecting a significant proportion of women of reproductive age. Despite the long interest and extensive research, the pathogenesis of the disease is still debated. Although available non-invasive diagnostic methods have adequate accuracy, an invasive approach by laparoscopy is often necessary to obtain histological confirmation. In this scenario, the search for an accurate, reliable, cost-effective, clinically applicable non-invasive biomarker plays a crucial role in a potentially early diagnosis and, in this way, shape the future management of the disease. Considering these elements, the current review aims to summarize the most significant and novel results about biomarkers for the diagnosis and follow-up of women affected by endometriosis.

Abstract
Endometriosis is one of the major gynecological diseases of reproductive-age women. This disease is characterized by the presence of glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. Several studies have shown the major role of inflammation, angiogenesis, adhesion and invasion, and apoptosis in endometriotic lesions. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying endometriotic mechanisms still remain unclear and therapies are not currently efficient. The introduction of new agents can be effective by improving the condition of patients. PPARγ ligands can directly modulate these pathways in endometriosis. However, data in humans remain low. Thus, the purpose of this review is to summarize the potential actions of PPARγ agonists in endometriosis by acting on inflammation, angiogenesis, invasion, adhesion, and apoptosis.

Abstract
Demetra Application is a holistic integrated and scalable bioinformatics web-based tool designed to assist medical experts and researchers in the process of diagnosing endometriosis. The application identifies the most prominent gene variants and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) causing endometriosis using the genomic data provided for the patient by a medical expert. The present study analyzed >28.000 endometriosis-related publications using data mining and semantic techniques aimed towards extracting the endometriosis-related genes and SNPs. The extracted knowledge was filtered, evaluated, annotated, classified, and stored in the Demetra Application Database (DAD). Moreover, an updated gene regulatory network with the genes implements in endometriosis was established. This was followed by the design and development of the Demetra Application, in which the generated datasets and results were included. The application was tested and presented herein with whole-exome sequencing data from seven related patients with endometriosis. Endometriosis-related SNPs and variants identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS), whole-genome (WGS), whole-exome (WES), or targeted sequencing information were classified, annotated and analyzed in a consolidated patient profile with clinical significance information. Probable genes associated with the patient's genomic profile were visualized using several graphs, including chromosome ideograms, statistic bars and regulatory networks through data mining studies with relative publications, in an effort to obtain a representative number of the most credible candidate genes and biological pathways associated with endometriosis. An evaluation analysis was performed on seven patients from a three-generation family with endometriosis. All the recognized gene variants that were previously considered to be associated with endometriosis were properly identified in the output profile per patient, and by comparing the results, novel findings emerged. This novel and accessible webserver tool of endometriosis to assist medical experts in the clinical genomics and precision medicine procedure is available at http://geneticslab.aua.gr/.

Abstract
Hypertension is one of the most prevalent diseases that leads to end organ damage especially affecting the heart, kidney, brain, and eyes. Numerous studies have evaluated the association between hypertension and impaired sexual health, in both men and women. The detrimental effects of hypertension in men includes erectile dysfunction, decrease in semen volume, sperm count and motility, and abnormal sperm morphology. Similarly, hypertensive females exhibit decreased vaginal lubrication, reduced orgasm, and several complications in pregnancy leading to fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The adverse effect of hypertension on male and female fertility is attributed to hormonal imbalance and changes in the gonadal vasculature. However, mechanistic studies investigating the impact of hypertension on gonads in more detail on a molecular basis remain scarce. Hence, the aim of the current review is to address and summarize the effects of hypertension on reproductive health, and highlight the importance of research on the effects of hypertension on gonadal inflammation and lymphatics.

Abstract
Background: Endometriosis is a chronic and debilitating disease, which affects millions of young women worldwide. Although medicine has incontestably evolved in the last years, there is no common ground regarding the early and accurate diagnosis of this condition, its pathogenic mechanisms, and curative treatment. Even though the spontaneous resolution of endometriosis is sometimes possible, recent reports suggested that it can be a progressive condition. It can associate chronic pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, infertility, or malignant degenerescence. Conventional treatments could produce many side effects, and despite treatment, the symptoms may reappear. In recent years, experimental evidence suggested that plant-based medicine could exert beneficial effects on endometriosis and endometriosis-related symptoms. This study aims to highlight the pharmaceutical activity of phytochemicals and medicinal plants against endometriosis and to provide a source of information regarding the alternative treatment of this condition. Methods: For this review, we performed a research using PubMed, GoogleScholar, and CrossRef databases. We selected the articles published between January 2000 and July 2020, written in English. Results: We found 17 medicinal plants and 13 phytochemicals, which have demonstrated their beneficial effects against endometriosis. Several of their biological activities consist of antiangiogenic, anti-inflammatory effects, and oxidative-stress reduction. Conclusion: Medicinal herbs and their bioactive compounds exhibit antiangiogenic, antioxidant, sedative and pain-alleviating properties and the effects recorded until now encourage their use for the conservative management of endometriosis.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a common multi-factorial gynaecological disease. Recent studies have revealed that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. In the present study, the expression profiles of lncRNAs in 6 pairs of endometriosis ectopic endometrium (ecEM) and eutopic endometrium (euEM) tissues were analysed by RNA sequencing. From the profiles, LINC01116 was found to be up-regulated in ecEM tissues compared to euEM tissues and was verified by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Then, functional experiments demonstrated that LINC01116 promoted the proliferation and migration of ectopic primary endometrial stromal cells (ESCs), while miR-9-5p exerted the opposite effects. Dual-luciferase reporter assays verified that LINC01116 directly sponged miR-9-5p and relieved the suppression of its target, Forkhead box protein P1 (FOXP1). Rescue experiments further demonstrated that LINC01116 could promote proliferation and migration of ESCs by targeting FOXP1 via sponging miR-9-5p. Overall, our study illuminates that LINC01116 promotes the progression of endometriosis through the miR-9-5p/FOXP1 axis. This finding provides a novel therapeutic target for patients with endometriosis.

Abstract
Endometriosis is considered a benign gynaecological disease with cancer-like characterizations, which has a high incidence among women of reproductive age. However, this disease has so far lacked timely diagnosis and effective treatment owing to its unclear aetiology. In this study, we identified aberrant high expression of circ_0007331 in ectopic endometrial cells by comparing the endometrial samples from patients with and without endometriosis. Further functional experiments revealed that circ_0007331 knock-down effectively suppressed the viability, proliferation and invasive capacity of ectopic endometrial cells. Additionally, we attempted to define the molecular mechanism of circ_0007331 in the initiation and progression of endometriosis. Circ_0007331 acted as a miRNA sponge for miR-200c-3p to indirectly regulate the function of HIF-1α, which plays a key role in the local angiogenesis and hypoxic mechanisms of ectopic endometrium. A final in vivo experiment confirmed that circ_0007331 knock-down could suppress the development of endometriosis through down-regulating the expression of HIF-1α. Collectively, we preliminarily characterized the role and possible insights of circ_0007331/miR-200c-3p/HIF-1α axis in the proliferation and invasion of ectopic endometrial cells. We hope that by exploring the potential function and molecular mechanism of circ_0007331, we can increase our biological insight into the pathogenesis of endometriosis, which will bring the new ways for the diagnosis and therapy of this disease.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic disease characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue outside of the uterine cavity. Endometriosis affects up to 10% of women of reproductive age and has great social impact. The diagnostics of endometriosis are based on clinical appearance, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); however, a diagnosis is frequently hampered by the absence of objective criteria. Adenomyosis (AM) is a particular type of endometriosis wherein the spread of the ectopic endometrial gland is limited by the uterine myometrium. Alteration of the microRNA expression profile in the eutopic endometrium can be associated with AM, and may be assayed for diagnostic purposes. In the presented study, we aimed to explore the diagnostic potency of this approach. Eutopic endometrium specimens were collected from patients (n = 33) and healthy women (n = 30). The microRNA expression was profiled to select individual microRNAs with AM-associated expression alterations. A new method of two-tailed RT-qPCR microRNA analysis was applied to assay potential markers. The expression ratios of reciprocally dysregulated microRNAs were calculated, and the diagnostic potency of these parameters was evaluated by receiver operation curve (ROC) analysis. Mir-10b, miR-200c and miR-191 were significantly dysregulated in the eutopic endometrium of AM patients. The expression ratio of reciprocally dysregulated microRNAs allowed us to diagnose AM with a range of sensitivity from 65% to 74%, and of specificity from 72% to 86%. The analysis of microRNAs from the eutopic endometrium might present a promising low-invasive method of AM diagnostics.

Abstract
Endometriosis represents a frequently diagnosed gynecological affliction in the reproductive timespan of women, defined by symptoms ranging from pelvic pain to infertility. A complex interplay between the genetic profile, hormonal activity, menstrual cyclicity, inflammation status, and immunological factors define the phenotypic presentation of endometriosis. To date, imaging techniques represent the gold standard in diagnosing endometriosis, of which transvaginal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging bring the most value to the diagnostic step. Current medical treatment options for endometriosis-associated infertility focus on either stimulating the follicular development and ovulation or on inhibiting the growth and development of endometriotic lesions. Techniques of assisted reproduction consisting of superovulation with in vitro fertilization or intrauterine insemination represent effective treatment alternatives that improve fertility in patients suffering from endometriosis. Emerging therapies such as the usage of antioxidant molecules and stem cells still need future research to prove the therapeutic efficacy in this pathology.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Endometriosis is a common benign gynecological condition that can be associated with a slightly increased risk of developing a wide range of malignancies. CASE PRESENTATION We herein report a singular case of a 62-year-old woman with a history of pelvic endometriosis, referred to our institution for chronic pelvic pain and uterine bleeding, with clinical and radiological evidence of left ovarian mass of 18 cm in largest diameter and multiple nodular mural lesions of the uterine cavity. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy followed by hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and omentectomy with pelvic lymph-node sampling. The histological examination of the ovarian mass revealed a clear-cell ovarian carcinoma arising from an endometriotic cyst. The microscopic examination of the uterine cavity showed multiple conventional leiomyomas, diffuse foci of adenomyosis, and a 1.5-cm yellow nodule diagnosed as low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma associated with glandular atypical differentiation and with extension into parametrial and omental tissues. Following the diagnosis, the patient was treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hormonal therapy and after 9 months of follow-up is alive without local recurrences and distant metastases. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, the present case represents the first evidence of the simultaneous occurrence of clear-cell carcinoma and low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma arising within ovarian and uterine endometriotic foci, respectively.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a common inflammatory gynecological disorder which causes pelvic scarring, pain, and infertility, characterized by the implantation of endometrial-like lesions outside the uterus. The peritoneum, ovaries, and deep soft tissues are the commonly involved sites, and endometriotic lesions can be classified into three subphenotypes: superficial peritoneal endometriosis (PE), ovarian endometrioma (OE), and deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE). In 132 women diagnosed laparoscopically with and without endometriosis (n = 73, 59 respectively), and stratified into PE, OE, and DIE, peritoneal fluids (PF) were characterized for 48 cytokines by using multiplex immunoassays. Partial-least-squares-regression analysis revealed distinct subphenotype cytokine signatures—a six-cytokine signature distinguishing PE from OE, a seven-cytokine signature distinguishing OE from DIE, and a six-cytokine-signature distinguishing PE from DIE—each associated with different patterns of biological processes, signaling events, and immunology. These signatures describe endometriosis better than disease stages (p < 0.0001). Pathway analysis revealed the association of ERK1 and 2, AKT, MAPK, and STAT4 linked to angiogenesis, cell proliferation, migration, and inflammation in the subphenotypes. These data shed new insights on the pathophysiology of endometriosis subphenotypes, with the potential to exploit the cytokine signatures to stratify endometriosis patients for targeted therapies and biomarker discovery.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease, affecting up to 10% of reproductive-age women. The exact cause of the disease is unknown; however, it is a heritable condition affected by multiple genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. Previous studies reported variations in the epigenetic patterns of numerous genes known to be involved in the aberrant modulation of cell cycle steroidogenesis, abnormal hormonal, immune and inflammatory status in endometriosis, apoptosis, adhesion, angiogenesis, proliferation, immune and inflammatory processes, response to hypoxia, steroidogenic pathway and hormone signaling are involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Accumulating evidence suggest that various epigenetic aberrations may contribute to the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Among them, DNA methyltransferases, histone deacetylators, and non-coding microRNAs demonstrate differential expression within endometriotic lesions and in the endometrium of patients with endometriosis. It has been indicated that the identification of epigenetic differences within the DNA or histone proteins may contribute to the discovery of a useful prognostic biomarker, which could aid in the future earlier detection, timely diagnosis, and initiation of a new approach to the treatment of endometriosis, as well as inform us about the effectiveness of treatment and the stage of the disease. As the etiology of endometriosis is highly complex and still far from being fully elucidated, the presented review focuses on different approaches to identify the genetic and epigenetic links of endometriosis and its pathogenesis.
