Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the view of prediabetes and prehypertension elderly patients living around temple on long-term self-management in proficient way underneath the lifestyle intervention program based on both focus-group discussion and In-depth interview methods to fill the gap in partially successful intervention. 62 participants were selected from 220 participants of the quantitative published study by 2 researchers. The triangulation method was used to put great emphasis on the consistency and the credibility of the results. Almost all of the participants had benefited from the program regarding proper foods, suitable exercise and an inspiration of lifestyle modification. They made changes of eating behavior and exercise behavior during program attendance, however, after the program had finished, they had minimal concern to take care of themselves. Nonetheless, more than half of them demonstrated some health-related behaviors changes due to they gave the value of the suggestion in different aspects. Moreover, high-frequency program attendance was not related to blood results improvement. The knowledge obtained from program intervention together with adequate contact between the patient and the program staff, personal problems solving, personal attitude, practice and acceptable played a key role for long-term lifestyle modification and completely successful intervention.

Abstract
Emerging evidence indicates that exposure to fine particulate matter contributes to the onset of diabetes. The present study aimed to investigate the mechanism of particulate matters (PM)2.5 affecting glucose homeostasis in mice with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Male C57BL/6 mice were housed under filtered air (FA) or PM2.5 for 12 weeks and then received intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ; 40 mg/kg) or acetic buffer daily for 5 days. At 4 weeks after the last injection, fasting glucose was tested. In the plasma and liver, cholesterol levels were determined by cholesterol oxidase-peroxidase and triglyceride levels were determined by triglycerophosphate oxidase-peroxidase. Homeostasis model assessment of β cell function (Homa-β) was computed based on fasting insulin and glucose levels. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) levels in plasma, visceral adipose tissues, RAW264.7 macrophages and MIN6 pancreatic β cells treated with PM2.5 (0-50 µg/ml) were quantified via ELISA. Before STZ injection, fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were similar between FA and PM2.5 groups. After STZ injection, FBG levels were higher in mice pre-exposed to PM2.5 compared with those pre-exposed to FA. When taking FBG levels ≥7 mmol/l as the criteria for impaired glucose level, its incidence was 53.3% and 77.8% in FA and PM2.5 groups, respectively. Independent of STZ injection, IL-1β levels in the adipose tissue were upregulated in mice pre-exposed to PM2.5 compared with FA. The addition of PM2.5 stimulated IL-1β and TNFα production in macrophages and pancreatic β cells, and inhibited the secretion of insulin from MIN6 cells in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, pre-exposure of PM2.5 impaired pancreatic β cells in mice upon STZ injection, partially via enhanced inflammation, and suppressed the secretion of insulin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We hypothesized that specific amino acids or acylcarnitines would have benefits for the differential diagnosis of diabetes. Thus, a targeted metabolomics for amino acids and acylcarnitines in patients with diabetes and its complications was carried out. METHODS A cohort of 54 normal individuals and 156 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and/or diabetic complications enrolled from the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinzhou Medical University was studied. The subjects were divided into five main groups: normal individuals, impaired fasting glucose, overt diabetes, diabetic microvascular complications, and diabetic peripheral vascular disease. The technique of tandem mass spectrometry was applied to obtain the plasma metabolite profiles. Metabolomics multivariate statistics were applied for the metabolic data analysis and the differential metabolites determination. RESULTS A total of 10 cross-comparisons within diabetes and its complications were designed to explore the differential metabolites. The results demonstrated that eight comparisons existed and yielded significant metabolic differences. A total number of 24 differential metabolites were determined from six selected comparisons, including up-regulated amino acids, down-regulated medium-chain and long-chain acylcarnitines. Altered differential metabolites provided six panels of biomarkers, which were helpful in distinguishing diabetic patients. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that the biomarker panels consisted of specific amino acids and acylcarnitines which could reflect the metabolic variations among the different stages of diabetes and might be useful for the differential diagnosis of prediabetes, overt diabetes and diabetic complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Prediabetes has been suggested to increase risk for death; however, the definitions of prediabetes that can predict death remain elusive. We prospectively investigated the association of multiple definitions of prediabetes with the risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer in Japanese workers. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The study included 62,785 workers who underwent a health checkup in 2010 or 2011 and were followed up for death from 2012 to March 2019. Prediabetes was defined according to fasting plasma glucose (FPG) or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values or a combination of both using the American Diabetes Association (ADA) or World Health Organization (WHO)/International Expert Committee (IEC) criteria. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to investigate the associations. RESULTS Over a 7-year follow-up, 229 deaths were documented. Compared with normoglycemia, prediabetes defined according to ADA criteria was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 1.53; 95% CI 1.12-2.09) and death due to cancer (HR 2.37; 95% CI 1.45-3.89) but not with death due to CVD. The results were materially unchanged when prediabetes was defined according to ADA FPG, ADA HbA1c, WHO FPG, or combined WHO/IEC criteria. Diabetes was associated with the risk of all-cause, CVD, and cancer deaths. CONCLUSIONS In a cohort of Japanese workers, FPG- and HbA1c-defined prediabetes, according to ADA or WHO/IEC, were associated with a significantly increased risk of death from all causes and cancer but not CVD.

Abstract
Diabetes is a risk factor for developing severe COVID-19, but the pathogenesis remains unclear. We investigated if the association of diabetes and COVID-19 severity may be mediated by inflammation. We also hypothesized that this increased risk may extend to prediabetes. Hospitalized patients in Singapore with COVID-19 were subdivided into three groups in a retrospective cohort: normoglycemia (HbA1c: ≤5.6%), prediabetes (HbA1c: 5.7%-6.4%) and diabetes (HbA1c: ≥6.5%). The primary outcome of severe COVID-19 was defined by respiratory rate ≥30, SpO2 ≤93% or intensive care unit admission. The association between clinical factors on severe COVID-19 outcome was analyzed by cox regression. Adjusted mediation analysis of C-reactive protein (CRP) on the relationship between diabetes and severe COVID-19 was performed. Of 1042 hospitalized patients, mean age 39 ± 11 years, 13% had diabetes, 9% prediabetes and 78% normoglycemia. Severe COVID-19 occurred in 4.9% of subjects. Compared to normoglycemia, diabetes was significantly associated with severe COVID-19 on both univariate (hazard ratio [HR]: 9.94; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.54-17.84; p < .001) and multivariate analysis (HR: 3.99; 95% CI: 1.92-8.31; p < .001), while prediabetes was not a risk factor (HR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.22-4.03; p = .929). CRP, a biomarker of inflammation, mediated 32.7% of the total association between diabetes and severe COVID-19 outcome. In conclusion, CRP is a partial mediator of the association between diabetes and severe COVID-19 infection, confirming that inflammation is important in the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19 in diabetes.

Abstract
Background The present study aimed to assess the correlation of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-23 expression with clinical characteristics, then further explore its value in predicting 2-year in-stent restenosis (ISR) risk in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stent (DES). Methods In this prospective, single-center, observational study, totally 214 CHD patients treated by PCI with DES were consecutively recruited, and peripheral blood samples were collected prior to PCI with DES for serum samples isolation. Following, FGF-23 level in the serum samples was detected via enzyme linked-immuno-sorbent Assay. The follow-up coronary angiography was performed at 1 year and 2 years after PCI or if suspected ISR symptoms occurred. Results FGF-23 was positively correlated with fasting blood-glucose, insulin resistance, serum creatinine, serum uric acid, LDL-C, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, cardiac troponin I and N-terminal-proB-type natriuretic peptide, while was negatively associated with HDL-C and left ventricular ejection fraction (all P < 0.01). Furthermore, FGF-23 was positively correlated with hypercholesteremia, hyperuricemia and family history of CAD (all P < 0.05). However, it did not correlate with other chronic complications, biochemical indexes, lesion features or PCI parameters (all P > 0.05). Moreover, FGF-23 level was higher in 2-year ISR patients (n = 38) compared to 2-year non-ISR patients (n = 176) (P < 0.001), and receiver operating characteristic curve indicated that FGF-23 was of good value in predicting 2-year ISR risk (AUC 0.828, 95% CI 0.761–0.896). Conclusion FGF-23 correlates with endocrine and metabolism dysregulation, worse cardiac and renal function, inflammation level, stenosis degree of target lesion, and serves as an independent risk factor for 2-year ISR risk in CHD patients underwent PCI with DES.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the recent prevalence, management, and comorbidities of diabetes among Korean adults aged ≥30 years by analyzing nationally representative data. METHODS This study used data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2016 to 2018, and the percentage and total number of people ≥30 years of age with diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) were estimated. RESULTS In 2018, 13.8% of Korean adults aged ≥30 years had diabetes, and adults aged ≥65 years showed a prevalence rate of 28%. The prevalence of IFG was 26.9% in adults aged ≥30 years. From 2016 to 2018, 35% of the subjects with diabetes were not aware of their condition. Regarding comorbidities, 53.2% and 61.3% were obese and hypertensive, respectively, and 72% had hypercholesterolemia as defined by low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) ≥100 mg/dL in people with diabetes. Of the subjects with diabetes, 43.7% had both hypertension and hypercholesterolemia. With regard to glycemic control, only 28.3% reached the target level of <6.5%. Moreover, only 11.5% of subjects with diabetes met all three targets of glycosylated hemoglobin, blood pressure, and LDL-C. The percentage of energy intake from carbohydrates was higher in diabetes patients than in those without diabetes, while that from protein and fat was lower in subjects with diabetes. CONCLUSION The high prevalence and low control rate of diabetes and its comorbidities in Korean adults were confirmed. More stringent efforts are needed to improve the comprehensive management of diabetes to reduce diabetes-related morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep duration is thought to play a key role in the development of metabolic syndrome. However, the results have been inconsistent. METHODS We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies and searched publications in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Clinicaltrials.gov. The summary relative risks (RRs) were estimated using a random model. The sensitivity analysis was performed by sequentially excluding each study to test the robustness of the pooled estimates. FINDING We included 13 studies involving 300,202 patients in which short sleep and long sleep significantly increased the risk of metabolic syndrome 15% (RR = 1.15, 95%CI = 1.09-1.22, p < 0.001) and 19% (RR = 1.19, 95%CI = 1.05-1.35, p < 0.001). Moreover, the relationship between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome risk presented a U-shaped curve. Short and long sleep increased the risk of obesity by 14% (RR = 1.14, 95%CI = 1.07-1.22, p<0.001) and 15% (RR = 1.15, 95%CI = 1.00-1.30, p = 0.04), and high blood pressure 16% (RR = 1.16, 95%CI = 1.02-1.31, p = 0.03) and 13% (RR = 1.13, 95%CI = 1.04-1.24, p = 0.01), respectively. Short sleep can potentially increase the risk of high blood sugar by 12% (RR = 1.12, 95%CI = 1.00-1.15, P = 0.05). IMPLICATIONS Based on our findings, sleep is a behavior that can be changed and is economical. Clinically doctors and health professionals should be encouraged to increase their efforts to promote healthy sleep for all people.

Abstract
PURPOSE Discrepancies exist between international bodies for the diagnosis of impaired fasting glucose (IFG). The aim of this study was to establish the IFG characteristics and evaluate the best diagnostic IFG criteria in a high risk dysglycaemic population. METHODS An IFG population (n = 451) was identified from a national representative cross-sectional survey using a fasting blood glucose (FBG) ranging from 5.60 to 6.99 mmol/L. These participants were invited for a follow-up oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Both FBG results (health survey & OGTT) were evaluated in relation to different diagnostic IFG criteria (>5.6 mmol/L vs. >6.1 mmol/L) while comparing to the final OGTT glycemic diagnosis. RESULTS Out of the total survey population (n = 1861), 24.34% was diagnosed with IFG. Approximately 50% of the IFG's (n = 227) attended for the OGTT. The majority of the IFG population were male with an overweight-obese status. If the FBG cut-off point of 6.1 mmol/L was followed, more than a quarter of the population attending the OGTT would have had a missed dysglycaemic status. CONCLUSION High-risk dysglycaemic and body mass populations may establish a more accurate dysglycaemia diagnosis and outcome when following an FBG cut-off point of >5.60 mmol/L for IFG.

Abstract
Aims: We investigated whether a lifestyle intervention could influence expression and DNA methylation of diabetes-related genes in patients with impaired glucose regulation (IGR), the results were compared to bariatric surgery, considering it an intensive change. Methods: Twenty participants with IGR had adipose tissue biopsy and blood collected pre- and post-lifestyle (6 months) intervention; 12 obese patients had subcutaneous fat taken before and after bariatric surgery. RNA/DNA was extracted from all samples and underwent qPCR. DNA was bisulphite converted and 12 CpG sites of Caveolin-1 (CAV1) promoter were pyrosequenced. Results: lifestyle intervention resulted in opposite direction changes in fat tissue and blood for CAV1 expression and DNA methylation and these changes were correlated between tissues, while no significative differences were found in CAV1 expression after bariatric surgery. Conclusions: Our findings suggest a role for CAV1 in modulating adipocyte function as a consequence of lifestyle changes, as exercises and diet. These results may provide insights into new therapeutic targets for diabetes prevention.

Abstract
Prediabetes is a dysglycemic state that affects many around the world and is a known risk factor for the occurrence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the future, accompanied by vascular complications. Evidence abounds regarding myocardial involvement in prediabetes. We herein review studies having applied tissue Doppler imaging or speckle-tracking echocardiography to evaluate myocardial function in subjects with prediabetes to depict a picture of cardiac mechanics in individuals with prediabetes in comparison with patients suffering from diabetes mellitus and individuals in the normoglycemic state. Finally, we present the detrimental effects of prediabetes on cardiac mechanics.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the association of hyperglycaemia and changes in glycaemic control with periodontal status in non-diabetic individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS A sub-population (n = 647) of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 was studied. We categorized long-term glucose balance based on fasting plasma glucose (FPG) at ages 31 and 46: FPG <5.0 mmol/l (strict normoglycaemia), FPG 5.0-5.59 mmol/l (slightly elevated FPG) and FPG 5.6-6.9 mmol/l (prediabetes). Probing pocket depth (PPD) and alveolar bone level (BL) data were collected at age 46. Relative risks (RR, 95% CI) were estimated using Poisson regression models. RESULTS Periodontal status was poorer in individuals whose glucose balance worsened from age 31 to 46 years than in those with a stable glucose balance. In the case of strict normoglycaemia at age 31 and slightly elevated FPG or prediabetes at age 46, the RRs for PPD ≥4 mm were 1.8 (95% CI 1.4-2.2) and 2.8 (95% CI 2.0-3.8) and for BL ≥5 mm 1.1 (95% CI 0.8-1.4) and 1.8 (95% CI 1.2-2.8), respectively. CONCLUSION The results of this population-based cohort study suggest that impairment in glucose control in non-diabetic individuals is associated with periodontal pocketing and alveolar bone loss.

BACKGROUND Based on Basic Health Research (RISKESDAS) conducted by Ministry of Health, Indonesia, prediabetes prevalence tends to increase from 2007 until 2018. The numbers are relatively higher in rural than those in urban area despite of small discrepancies between the two (~ 2-4%). The purpose of this study was to identify urban-rural differences in potential determinants for prediabetes in Indonesia. METHODS This analysis used secondary data collected from nationwide Health Survey in 2018. Respondents were aged ≥15 years who met inclusion criteria of analysis with no history of diabetes mellitus. Prediabetes criteria followed American Diabetes Association 2019. Multiple logistic regression was also employed to assess the transition probability of potential determinants for prediabetes in urban and rural Indonesia. RESULTS Up to 44.8% of rural respondents were prediabetics versus their urban counterparts at 34.9%, yet non-response bias was observed in the two. Young adults aged 30 years were already at risk of prediabetes. Urban-rural distinction for marital status and triglyceride level was observed while other determinants tended to overlap across residence. Several modifiable factors might contribute differently in both population with careful interpretation. CONCLUSIONS The minimum age limit for early prediabetes screening may start from 30 years old in Indonesia. Urban-rural distinction for marital status and triglyceride level was observed, yet non-response bias between the two groups could not be excluded. A proper model for early prediabetes screening need to be developed from a cohort study with adequate sample size.

Young adults aged 30 years were already at risk of prediabetes. Urban-rural distinction for marital status and triglyceride level was observed while other determinants tended to overlap across residence. Several modifiable factors might contribute differently in both population with careful interpretation. CONCLUSIONS The minimum age limit for early prediabetes screening may start from 30 years old in Indonesia. Urban-rural distinction for marital status and triglyceride level was observed, yet non-response bias between the two groups could not be excluded. A proper model for early prediabetes screening need to be developed from a cohort study with adequate sample size.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is a representative prediabetes characterized by defective glucose homeostasis, and palmatine (PAL) is a natural isoquinoline alkaloid with multiple pharmacological effects. Our study aims to investigate the therapeutic effect of PAL on the impaired glucose tolerance. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used to establish an IGT model with high fat diet (HFD). Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and further biochemical analysis were conducted to determine the effect of PAL on glucose intolerance in vivo. Molecular details were clarified in a cellular model of IGT induced by Palmitate (PA) on INS-1 cells. RESULTS Our study demonstrated a relief of IGT with improved insulin resistance in HFD induced rats after PAL treatment. Besides, promoted pancreas islets function was validated with significantly increased β cell mass after the treatment of PAL. We further found out that PAL could alleviate the β cell apoptosis that accounts for β cell mass loss in IGT model. Moreover, MAPK signaling was investigated in vivo and vitro with the discovery that PAL regulated the MAPK signaling by restricting the ERK and JNK cascades. The insulin secretion assay indicated that PAL significantly promoted the defective insulin secretion in PA-induced INS-1 cells via JNK rather than ERK signaling. Furthermore, PAL treatment was determined to significantly suppress β cell apoptosis in PA-induced cells. We thus thought that PAL promoted the PA-induced impaired insulin release by inhibiting the β cell apoptosis and JNK signaling in vitro. CONCLUSION In summary, PAL ameliorates HFD-induced IGT with novel mechanisms.

Effects of nut and seed consumption on markers of glucose metabolism in adults with prediabetes: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials. Br J Nutr 2020; 122:361-375. Abstract
The primary aim was to investigate the effects of nut and seed consumption on markers of glucose metabolism in adults with prediabetes. Studies with a randomised controlled trial (RCT) design, comparing the effects of a diet containing nuts or seeds against a diet without nuts or seeds in adults with prediabetes, were considered eligible. Primary outcome measures included fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h plasma glucose during oral glucose tolerance test and glycated Hb (HbA1c) concentrations. Studies were identified by searching PubMed and Scopus electronic databases and by checking full texts and reference lists of relevant records. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool. We included five RCT involving 371 adults with prediabetes or at risk of diabetes; three RCT investigated the effects of whole nut consumption and two the effects of ground flaxseed consumption. Consumption of 57 g/d pistachios or mean intake of 60 g/d almonds for 4 months improved FPG and fasting plasma insulin (FPI) concentrations, insulin resistance, cellular glucose uptake in lymphocytes and β-cell function. Consumption of 56 g/d walnuts for 6 months was not found to affect FPG or HbA1c concentrations. Consumption of 13 g/d flaxseed for 3 months improved FPG and FPI concentrations and insulin resistance. In a second study, however, flaxseed consumption was not found to affect markers of glucose metabolism. The risk of bias was generally low, thus the reported results could be reliable. Further investigation of nut and seed consumption effects in the field of prediabetes is warranted.

Abstract
Koreans have been consuming Petasites Japonicus (PJ) as food. Although the therapeutic effect of PJ on allergic or inflammatory reactions associated with asthma has been proven, its effect on obesity is unclear. Therefore, the present study was aimed to assess the obesity related anti-inflammatory and anti-adipogenic effects of ethanol extract PJ (EPJ) on the inflammatory response in RAW 264.7 macrophages and on differentiation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In addition, the polyphenolic compound was quantitatively characterized from the EPJ using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector, quadrupole time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-DAD-QToF-MS). In RAW 264.7 or 3T3-L1, reduction of nitric oxide (in macrophages) production as well as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 and tumor necrosis factor-α were observed. Treatment of EPJ in adipocyte differentiation showed an improvement in adiponectin and lipid accumulation and a significant reduction of PPARγ and FABP-4 mRNA expression levels. On the other hand, mRNA expression of UCP-1, PPARα, and ACO increased in the EPJ treated group. In addition, a total of 26 polyphenolic compounds were detected and of which 12 are reported for the first time from PJ. The higher content of diverse polyphenolic compounds presented in EPJ might be responsible for the observed anti-inflammatory and anti-adipogenic effect. These results suggest that PJ is valuable in improving obesity-related inflammatory responses.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major health problem and a societal burden. Individuals with prediabetes are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Catalpol, an iridoid glycoside, has been reported to exert a hypoglycaemic effect in db/db mice, but its effect on the progression of prediabetes is unclear. In this study, we established a mouse model of prediabetes and examined the hypoglycaemic effect, and the mechanism of any such effect, of catalpol. Catalpol (200 mg/(kg·day)) had no effect on glucose tolerance or the serum lipid level in a mouse model of impaired glucose tolerance-stage prediabetes. However, catalpol (200 mg/(kg·day)) increased insulin sensitivity and decreased the fasting glucose level in a mouse model of impaired fasting glucose/impaired glucose tolerance-stage prediabetes. Moreover, catalpol increased the mitochondrial membrane potential (1.52-fold) and adenosine triphosphate content (1.87-fold) in skeletal muscle and improved skeletal muscle function. These effects were mediated by activation of the insulin receptor-1/glucose transporter type 4 (IRS-1/GLUT4) signalling pathway in skeletal muscle. Our findings will facilitate the development of a novel approach to suppressing the progression of diabetes at an early stage. Novelty Catalpol prevents the progression of prediabetes in a mouse model of prediabetes. Catalpol improves insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle. The effects of catalpol are mediated by activation of the IRS-1/GLUT4 signalling pathway.

Abstract
The disease criteria used by the World Health Organization (WHO) were applied to human biological aging in order to assess whether aging can be classified as a disease. These criteria were developed for the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and included disease diagnostics, mechanisms, course and outcomes, known interventions, and linkage to genetic and environmental factors. RESULTS: Biological aging can be diagnosed with frailty indices, functional, blood-based biomarkers. A number of major causal mechanisms of human aging involved in various organs have been described, such as inflammation, replicative cellular senescence, immune senescence, proteostasis failures, mitochondrial dysfunctions, fibrotic propensity, hormonal aging, body composition changes, etc. We identified a number of clinically proven interventions, as well as genetic and environmental factors of aging. Therefore, aging fits the ICD-11 criteria and can be considered a disease. Our proposal was submitted to the ICD-11 Joint Task force, and this led to the inclusion of the extension code for "Ageing-related" (XT9T) into the "Causality" section of the ICD-11. This might lead to greater focus on biological aging in global health policy and might provide for more opportunities for the new therapy developers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The previous study served impaired fasting glucose (IFG), a pre-diabetic state which was much greater than that of diabetic patients, have reached no consensus on its cut-off value. In this study, we aimed to explore the cut-off value of IFG via the associations of blood lipids with fasting plasma glucose (FPG). DESIGN A cross-sectional study in Jilin province, China, 2012. SAMPLE 13,093 participants aged 18-79 years in Jilin province were involved in the study. The Lamba-Mu-Sigma (LMS) method and generalized additive model (GAM) were used to explore the associations of different levels of FPG and blood lipids. RESULTS The distributions of FPG, triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) were significantly different by gender (p<0.01). In general, both LMS and GAM results showed that the TG and HDL-c curves had a steeper tendency when the FPG was greater than 6.0mmol/L. CONCLUSION FPG was positively associated with TG while negatively associated with HDL-c, and the associations were stronger in females. The cut-off value of IFG was suggested to be 6.0mmol/L.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our aim was to examine the incidence and risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among individuals with different fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels. METHODS According to the first FPG value recorded between January 2006 and December 2017, individuals without T2DM (FPG <7 mmol/L) were divided into three groups: normal fasting glucose (NFG, FPG < 5.6 mmol/L), slightly impaired fasting glucose (IFGlow, 5.6 mmol/L ⩽ FPG < 6.1 mmol/L), and severely impaired fasting glucose (IFGhigh, 6.1 mmol/L ⩽ FPG < 7.0 mmol/L). Physical examination results, blood biochemical indicators, and questionnaire survey data were collected and the T2DM incidence was examined during the follow-up period. A Cox regression model was used to analyze the T2DM risk factors in the three groups. RESULTS A total of 44,852 individuals (55.33% men) were included in our study. During the follow-up period (mean follow-up time: 3.73 ± 0.01 years), 2912 T2DM cases occurred. The T2DM incidence rate of the NFG, IFGlow, and IFGhigh groups were 1.5%, 22.2%, and 43.8%, respectively (p < 0.05). In the NFG group, the risk factors for T2DM were older age, overweight, obesity, hypertension, hyperuricemia, and increased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR); the protective factors were female sex and high high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). In the IFGlow group, the risk factors for T2DM were older age, overweight, obesity, hypertension, and high total cholesterol (TC); the protective factors were increased triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and HDL-C. In the IFGhigh group, the risk factors for T2DM were older age, obesity, high eGFR, and high TC; the protective factors were female sex, hyperuricemia, high LDL-C, and high HDL-C (all, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The increased T2DM rates were associated with increased FPG. Risk factors for T2DM vary in the NFG, IFGlow, and IFGhigh groups.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the effects of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on the pancreatic β-cells dysfunction and their implications in the glucose dysmetabolism of overweight and obese nondiabetic young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS The cross-sectional analysis included 422 subjects (261 males/161 females) with the mean age of 27.77 ± 7.51 years and average body mass index (BMI) of 34.84 ± 5.69 kg/m2. All subjects underwent polysomnography (PSG), oral glucose tolerance-insulin releasing test (OGTT-IRT) and serum glycosylated hemoglobin A1 (HbA1c) measurement. The glucose metabolism and pancreatic β-cell function in relation to measures of OSA were determined adjustment for important confounders such as age and sex. RESULTS OSA subjects accounted for 54.91% in the normal glucose tolerance (NGT) group and 72.11% in the prediabetes (preDM) group (P =0.001). HbA1c was the highest in the preDM subjects with severe OSA. In the NGT subjects, the 1-h glucose level significantly elevated with the OSA severity, and the homeostasis model assessment-β (HOMA-β) was negatively related to nocturnal mean SpO2 (P <0.05). In the preDM subjects, HOMA-β, early phase insulinogenic index (∆I30/∆G30), total area under the curve of insulin in 180 min (AUC-I180), and the oral disposition index (DIO) were the lowest in the severe OSA group. DIO was associated with higher oxygen desaturation index (ODI) and lower nocturnal mean SpO2, and AUC-I180 was negatively related to TS90 (P <0.05). CONCLUSION Our study indicated higher prevalence of OSA in overweight and obese nondiabetic young adults, especially preDM subjects. The impaired glucose tolerance was observed early after glucose intake in the NGT subjects. OSA induces compensatory increase in the pancreatic β-cell function in the NGT subjects, while pancreatic β-cell dysfunction is present in the preDM subjects with severe OSA.

Abstract
Impaired glucose regulation, including diabetes and prediabetes, poses a huge global problem not only in health but also in the epidemiological and economic areas. These disorders are often detected too late or remain unrecognized. The article aims to provide a review of the prevalence, etiology, and natural history of impaired fasting glucose (IFG). We focus on the progression of isolated IFG to full-fledged type 2 diabetes and the factors conducive to the development of diabetes. The knowledge about it could help design an optimal management program for the prevention of diabetes in patients with IFG; a program that would be patient-tailored and based on the underlying pathophysiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS To investigate trajectories of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) among prediabetic people who progressed to diabetes, people who remained with prediabetes, and those who returned to normoglycemia. METHODS We used data from 22,945 prediabetic people who received an annual health checkup for up to eight years. The development of diabetes was defined using the American Diabetes Association criteria. People who did not progress to diabetes during the observation period were classified as 'remained with prediabetes' or 'returned to normoglycemia', based on their last health checkup data. Trajectories of BMI and WC were evaluated using linear mixed models for repeated measures, with adjustment for a wide range of covariates. RESULTS During the study period, 2972 people progressed to diabetes, 4706 returned to normoglycemia, and 15,267 remained with prediabetes. People who progressed to diabetes had a larger increase in mean BMI from 7 years to 1 year prior to diagnosis, which was about three times that of people who remained with prediabetes (annual change rate, 0.20 [95% confidence interval; 0.15 to 0.24] vs 0.06 [0.04 to 0.08] kg/m2 per year, P < 0.001), regardless of their BMI levels at the initial health checkup. Among people who returned to normoglycemia, mean BMI remained almost the same over time (-0.04 [-0.09 to 0.002] kg/m2 per year), except for those with obesity (-0.16 [-0.28 to -0.05] kg/m2 per year). As for WC, the annual change rate among people who developed diabetes was about 7 times that of people who remained with prediabetes (0.38 [0.32 to 0.45] vs 0.05 [0.03 to 0.08] cm per year, P < 0.001). We also observed a constant mean WC over time among people who had no central obesity and later returned to normoglycemia (-0.02 [-0.06 to 0.03] cm per year), and an annual decrease in mean WC among those who had central obesity and later returned to normoglycemia (-0.40 [-0.47 to -0.32] cm per year). CONCLUSIONS Our study provides strong evidence that avoiding weight gain could help prediabetic people minimize the risk of developing diabetes, regardless of whether they are obese. Losing weight could help obese people restore normoglycemia from a prediabetic state, whereas maintaining current weight may help nonobese people return to normoglycemia.

Abstract
This study evaluated the predictive ability of 11 obesity- and lipid-related parameters, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), body roundness index (BRI), "A" body-shape index (ABSI), conicity index (CI), visceral adiposity index (VAI), triglyceride-to-glucose fasting index (TyG), triglyceride-to-glucose fasting related to BMI (TyG-BMI), triglyceride-to-glucose fasting related to WC (TyG-WC), and triglyceride-to-glucose fasting related to WtHR (TyG-WtHR), to identify patients from an elderly Colombian population with a high risk of prediabetes according to the 2016 American Diabetes Association criteria. The data were obtained from the 2015 Colombian Health and Wellbeing and Aging Survey. A total of 3307 elderly Colombian individuals (aged over 60 years) were included. Anthropometric data, fasting plasma glucose, blood lipid profiles, family history, and health-related behaviors were assessed, and prediabetes was defined as a fasting plasma glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUCs) were calculated for each anthropometric indicator, using the prediabetes classification to identify their sensitivity and specificity, and these indicated that the prevalence of prediabetes was 25.3% in this population. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the TyG index was strongly associated with the odds of having prediabetes in both sexes, and multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the ORs for prediabetes increased across quartiles (p < 0.001). The TyG index was best able to identify prediabetes in either sex (AUC and optimal cut-off = 0.700 and 8.72, and 0.695 and 8.92 for men and women, respectively), suggesting that compared to the other parameters, the TyG index has the best discriminative power to predict prediabetes in the whole population. Thus, we propose the TyG index be used as a complementary marker for assessing prediabetes in older adults.

Abstract
Prediabetes is defined as a state of abnormal glucose homeostasis where blood glucose levels are elevated above those considered normal, but not as high as those required for a diagnosis of diabetes. As a condition intermediate between normal glucose homeostasis and the pathological condition of diabetes, the characterization of prediabetes as a distinct pathogenic condition is controversial. Emerging evidence suggests that the condition of prediabetes is associated with pathophysiological changes in several tissues and organs, which would support its recognition as a distinct pathological entity; the recent inclusion of prediabetes and associated billable conditions in the most recent ICD-10 codes provides additional credence to this position. This minireview summarizes our understanding of prediabetes and provides evidence that it should be considered a distinct and important clinical entity.

Abstract
Diabetes, a silent killer, is one of the most widely prevalent conditions of the present time. According to the 2017 International Diabetes Federation (IDF) statistics, the global prevalence of diabetes among the age group of 20-79 years is 8.8%. In addition, 1 in every 2 persons is unaware of the condition. This unawareness and ignorance lead to further complications. Pre-diabetes is the preceding condition of diabetes, and in most of the cases, this ultimately leads to the development of diabetes. Diabetes can be classified into three types, namely type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and gestational diabetes. The diagnosis of both pre-diabetes and diabetes is based on glucose criteria; the common modalities used are fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). A glucometer is commonly used by diabetic patients to measure blood glucose levels with fast and rather accurate measurements. A few of the more advanced and minimally invasive modalities include the glucose-sensing patch, SwEatch, eyeglass biosensor, breath analysis, etc. Despite a considerable amount of data being collected and analyzed regarding diabetes, the actual molecular mechanism of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is still unknown. Both genetic and epigenetic factors are associated with T2DM. The complications of diabetes can predominantly be classified into two categories: microvascular and macrovascular. Retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy are grouped under microvascular complications, whereas stroke, cardiovascular disease, and peripheral artery disease (PAD) belong to macrovascular complications. Unfortunately, until now, no complete cure for diabetes has been found. However, the treatment of pre-diabetes has shown significant success in preventing the further progression of diabetes. To prevent pre-diabetes from developing into T2DM, lifestyle intervention has been found to be very promising. Various aspects of diabetes, including the aforementioned topics, have been reviewed in this paper.

Abstract
Few evaluations of interventions to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Saudi Arabia (SA) have been undertaken. The present study evaluates the impact of a 6-month intensive lifestyle modification intervention delivered in primary care. Females from SA with prediabetes, aged 18–55 years, were recruited with 190 participants eligible following screening and randomly allocated to receive a 3-month one-on-one, intensive lifestyle modification (intervention group (IG) n = 95) or standard guidance (control group (CG) n = 95). Participants completed questionnaires including demographic, dietary and physical activity data. Blood samples were collected at baseline, 3 and 6 months. A total of 123 (74 IG (age 40.6 ± 9.8 years; body mass index (BMI) 31.2 ± 7.0 kg/m2) and 49 CG (age 40.6 ± 12.7 years; BMI 32.3 ± 5.4 kg/m2)) participants completed the study. After 6 months, haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c; primary endpoint) significantly improved in the IG than CG completers in between-group comparisons (p < 0.001). Comparison between groups showed significant improvements in overall energy intake, total and high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol in favour of IG (p-values < 0.001, 0.04 and <0.001, respectively). BMI and weight change were not clinically significant in between group comparisons. A 6-month, intense one-on-one intervention in lifestyle modification significantly improves glycaemic and cardio metabolic profile of females living in SA with pre-diabetes delivered in a primary care setting. Longer duration studies, using the same intervention, may determine whether a meaningful weight loss secondary to improved diet can be achieved.

Abstract
Prediabetes is defined as an intermediate state of hyperglycaemia with glucose levels above the normal state but below the diagnostic levels of diabetes. It is increasingly recognised as an important metabolic state, as individuals with prediabetes are at high risk of developing overt diabetes and its associated complications. A better understanding of prediabetes could help with earlier identification, thereby allowing earlier intervention, potentially lowering the number of individuals who go on to develop diabetes. The definitions and screening criteria for prediabetes differ between guidelines published by different organisations, resulting in estimations of prevalence that can vary widely from one another. Despite these differences, these estimates suggest that the number of individuals affected by prediabetes is increasing rapidly in all areas of the world. This short review compares and contrasts the diagnostic criteria for screening of prediabetes, the impact of various glycaemic measures on prevalence estimates, and discusses current and future trends in the global prevalence estimates of prediabetes.

Abstract
AIMS Previous studies have proposed potential benefit of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) supplementary to fasting glucose in detecting metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study was to investigate an association of incident MetS with levels of HbA1c and fasting glucose. METHODS In a cohort of Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, 5515 non-diabetic adults were grouped by the levels of baseline fasting glucose and HbA1c, and followed-up for 10 years. Using multivariate Cox proportional hazards assumption, hazards ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for incident MetS (adjusted HRs [95% CI]) were calculated according to baseline fasting glucose and HbA1c. In individuals with normal fasting glucose, subgroup analysis was conducted to evaluate an association of HbA1c levels with MetS. RESULTS The risk for MetS significantly increased proportionally to fasting glucose ≥ 80 mg/dL and HbA1c ≥ 5.5%, compared with fating glucose < 80 mg/dL and HbA1c < 5.3%, respectively. In subgroups of normal fasting glucose, HbA1c ≥ 5.7% had the increased risk of MetS in fasting glucose < 80 mg/dL (5.7-5.9%: 1.41 [1.07-1.86] and 6.0-6.4%: 2.20 [1.40-2.92]), and HbA1c ≥ 5.5% had the increased risk of MetS in fasting glucose of 80-99 mg/dL (5.5-5.6%: 1.33 [1.08-1.64], 5.7-5.9%: 1.57 (1.27-1.93), and 6.0-6.4%: 2.37 [1.87-3.00]). CONCLUSIONS Both elevated fasting glucose and HbA1c were significantly associated with the increased risk of MetS even within normal range. HbA1c is effective in identifying high-risk group for MetS in individuals with normal fasting glucose.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) on body fat redistribution and muscle mass in overweight/obese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the data of 76 patients with body mass indexes (BMI)≥24 kg/m2, who had an established diagnosis of T2DM in our department between December, 2014 and September, 2015. We divided these patients according to their BMI in overweight group (BMI of 24-27.9 kg/m2, n=14), obese group (BMI of 28-31.9 kg/m2, n=35) and severely obese group (BMI≥32 kg/m2, n=27). All the patients received treatment with GLP-1RAs (Exenatide or Liraglutide) for 3.0 to 29.0 weeks (mean 8.9 weeks), and their blood glucose, HbA1c and serum lipids were analyzed. For each patient, the fat and muscle masses were analyzed using a human body composition analyzer (JAWON-IOI353, Korea) before and after GLP-1RAs treatment. RESULTS Treatment with GLP-1RAs significantly decreased BMI and visceral adiposity index (VAI) in all the patients in the 3 groups (P < 0.05). The treatment significantly decreased the body weight in the overweight group and obese group by 2.70 kg (0.60-4.95 kg) and 2.65 kg (1.45-6.40 kg), respectively (P < 0.05), and significantly decreased the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) in the overweight group (P < 0.05). The obese and severely obese patients showed significantly decreased percentage body fat (including both subcutaneous and visceral fat) and increased muscle mass after the treatment (P < 0.05). Compared with those in the overweight group, the percentage body fat and VAI were significantly decreased in the obese group after the treatment (P < 0.05), and the percentage of subcutaneous fat reduced and the muscle ratio increased more obviously in the obese and severely obese patients (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS GLP-1RAs treatment can significantly lower BMI and improve body fat distribution in obese patients with T2DM, especially in patients with a greater BMI.

Abstract
Tumor cells exhibit a specialized metabolism supporting their superior ability for rapid proliferation, migration, and apoptotic evasion. It is reasonable to assume that the specific metabolic needs of the tumor cells can offer an array of therapeutic windows as pharmacological disturbance may derail the biochemical mechanisms necessary for maintaining the tumor characteristics, while being less important for normally proliferating cells. In addition, the specialized metabolism may leave a unique metabolic signature which could be used clinically for diagnostic or prognostic purposes. Quantitative global metabolic profiling (metabolomics) has evolved over the last two decades. However, despite the technology’s present ability to measure 1000s of endogenous metabolites in various clinical or biological specimens, there are essentially no examples of metabolomics investigations being translated into actual utility in the cancer clinic. This review investigates the current efforts of using metabolomics as a tool for translation of tumor metabolism into the clinic and further seeks to outline paths for increasing the momentum of using tumor metabolism as a biomarker and drug target opportunity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can have a substantial impact in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Community-based programs addressing diet, physical activity, and health behaviors have shown significant benefits on the prevention and management of T2DM, mainly in high-income countries. However, their effects on preventing T2DM in the at-risk population of LMICs have not been thoroughly evaluated. METHODS The Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE and two clinical trial registries were searched to identify eligible studies. We applied a 10 years limit (from 01 Jan 2008 to 06 Mar 2018) on English language literature. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with programs focused on lifestyle changes such as weight loss and/or physical activity increase, without pharmacological treatments, which aimed to alter incidence of diabetes or one of the T2DM risk factors, of at least 6 months duration based on follow-up, conducted in LMICs. RESULTS Six RCTs randomizing 2574 people were included. The risk of developing diabetes in the intervention groups reduced more than 40%, RR (0.57 [0.30, 1.06]), for 1921 participants (moderate quality evidence), though it was not statistically significant. Significant differences were observed in weight, body mass index, and waist circumference change in favor of community-based programs from baseline, (MD [95% CI]; - 2.30 [- 3.40, - 1.19], p < 0.01, I2 = 87%), (MD [95% CI]; - 1.27 [- 2.10, - 0.44], p < 0.01, I2 = 96%), and (MD [95% CI]; - 1.66 [- 3.17, - 0.15], p = 0.03, I2 = 95%), respectively. The pooled effect showed a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose and HbA1C measurements in favor of the intervention (MD [95% CI]; - 4.94 [- 8.33, - 1.55], p < 0.01, I2 = 62%), (MD [95% CI]; - 1.17 [- 1.51, - 0.82], p < 0.01, I2 = 46%), respectively. No significant difference was observed in 2-h blood glucose values, systolic or diastolic blood pressure change between the two groups. CONCLUSION Based on available literature, evidence suggests that community-based interventions may reduce the incidence rate of T2DM and may positively affect anthropometric indices and HbA1C. Due to the heterogeneity observed between trials we recommend more well-designed RCTs with longer follow-up durations be executed, to confirm whether community-based interventions lead to reduced T2DM events in the at-risk population of LMIC settings.

Abstract
Glucose converted from a diet has been considered a high-risk factor of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, it is not clear how it increases the risk of T2DM. Here, we investigated the effect of high-glucose administration on glucose tolerence in wild-type and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) knockout mice. Mice were intragastrically administered with high-glucose. The level of fasting blood glucose, insulin and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance were measured, and insulinogenic index and HOMA-IR were calculated at 1 week. To understand mechanism of glucose action, we also assessed blood glucose, glucagon-like peptide-1 and inflammatory cytokines levels at different time windows following high-glucose load. Our results show that 20 g/kg glucose load leads to glucose tolerance impairment and insulin resistance in wild-type mice. Following 20 g/kg glucose load, the levels of plasma interlukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) increased significantly in wild-type mice, but not in TLR4 knockout mice. Moreover, 20 g/kg glucose load also impaired glucose-induced GLP-1 secretion in wild-type and TLR4 knockout mice. Our results indicate that high-glucose load leads to glucose intolerance with insulin resistance through impairment of GLP-1 secretion, increase of blood glucose levels via activating TLR4 and increasing levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in mice.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a prevalent risk factor for tuberculosis (TB), but most studies on TB-T2D have focused on TB patients, been limited to one community, and shown a variable impact of T2D on TB risk or treatment outcomes. We conducted a cross-sectional assessment of sociodemographic and metabolic factors in adult TB contacts with T2D (versus no T2D), from the Texas-Mexico border to study Hispanics, and in Cape Town to study South African Coloured ethnicities. The prevalence of T2D was 30.2% in Texas-Mexico and 17.4% in South Africa, with new diagnosis in 34.4% and 43.9%, respectively. Contacts with T2D differed between ethnicities, with higher smoking, hormonal contraceptive use and cholesterol levels in South Africa, and higher obesity in Texas-Mexico (p < 0.05). PCA analysis revealed striking differences between ethnicities in the relationships between factors defining T2D and dyslipidemias. Our findings suggest that screening for new T2D in adult TB contacts is effective to identify new T2D patients at risk for TB. Furthermore, studies aimed at predicting individual TB risk in T2D patients, should take into account the heterogeneity in dyslipidemias that are likely to modify the estimates of TB risk or adverse treatment outcomes that are generally attributed to T2D alone.

Abstract
AIMS This study analysed potential sex differences in glucose metabolism of European subjects with different degrees of glucose tolerance impairment. METHODS Subjects with impaired glucose metabolism, IGM (n = 735), or type 2 diabetes, T2DM (n = 415), were compared to subjects with normal glucose tolerance, NGT (n = 422), with similar BMI. For both males (M) and females (F), 50 years threshold was used for estimation of menopausal/andropausal state. Subjects underwent 75-g OGTT for measurements of insulin sensitivity (OGIS), beta-cell function (insulinogenic index, IGIC), and overall metabolic condition, disposition index (DI). RESULTS In IGM, OGIS did not change with age in both sexes, whereas marked reduction of IGIC was seen in F (p = 0.0003). In T2DM, again OGIS did not change with age, but M ≥ 50 yrs had reduced IGIC and DI (p < 0.002) compared to M < 50 yrs. CONCLUSIONS IGM did not reveal relevant changes of insulin resistance with age, but early phase insulin release deteriorated, with higher change in women. T2DM men featured age-related deterioration of glucose metabolism. In women, sex advantage seen in NGT vanished in T2DM, since glucose metabolism was overall not different than in men, both young and elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The contribution of dietary factors in the development and progression of pre-diabetes has been increasingly recognized. However, due to high variability in dietary habits measurement of dietary intake remains one of the most challenging tasks in this population. Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) which investigates usual dietary intake can be used to identify frequent consumption of foods such as dietary fat, fiber, grains that are linked to the risk of pre-diabetes. METHOD This systematic review was conducted to identify and describe FFQs that measure dietary intake of pre-diabetic patients and to examine their relative validity and reliability. The systematic search was done through electronic databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, ProQuest and Scopus. Methodological quality of included studies and results of study outcome was also summarized in this review. RESULT The search identified 445 papers, of which 18 studies reported 15 FFQs, met inclusion criteria. Most of the FFQs (n = 12) were semi-quantitative while three were frequency measures with portion size estimation of selected food items. Test-retest reliability of FFQ was reported in 7 (38.3%) studies with the correlation coefficient of 0.33-0.92. Relative validity of FFQ was reported in 16 (88.8%) studies with the range of correlation coefficient of 0.08-0.83. Dietary patterns rich in carbohydrate, fat, animal protein and n-3 fatty acids were associated with increased risk of pre-diabetes. CONCLUSION No well-established disease-specific FFQ identified in the literature. Development of a valid, practical and reliable tool is needed for better understanding of the impact of diet in pre-diabetic population.

Abstract
Prediabetes, a condition characterised by impaired glucose regulation, is on the rise worldwide. This condition puts people at risk for cardiovascular disease, and 50% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes (T2D). People with prediabetes can reduce their risk of developing T2D through lifestyle changes such as regular physical activity and healthy eating. However, the experience of health risks can be associated with negative reactions that can undermine people's ability to self-regulate the health behaviours that would reduce such risk. Self-compassion, or treating oneself kindly in the face of challenge, is known to help people manage negative emotions and facilitate self-regulation. Therefore, self-compassion may be helpful for people with prediabetes who have to manage their health behaviours in the context of a health threat. The purpose of this study was to explore how people, from a small Canadian city who learn that they have prediabetes, react emotionally to their prediabetes diagnosis. We also explored participants' receptivity to applying self-compassion in the context of their prediabetes. Twenty-one adults, recently notified by their doctors as having HbA1c scores indicative of prediabetes (Mage = 57.76, SD = 5.43), engaged in a semi-structured interview between June 2017 and January 2018. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyse the data and four themes emerged. Participants' reactions to learning that they had prediabetes were characterised by (a) distress and concern, (b) downplay of T2D risks, (c) guilt and shame, and participants were receptive to (d) self-compassion as a beneficial approach to take in relation to their prediabetes. Findings suggest that people experience negative reactions to their prediabetes diagnosis yet are receptive to self-compassion, which could mitigate these reactions. These findings can inform lifestyle behaviour change programmes for individuals living with prediabetes by providing a better understanding of their perspectives of disease diagnosis.

Abstract
Background Laparoscopic metabolic surgery has been previously shown to be an effective treatment for obese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The objective of this scoping review is to determine the impact of metabolic surgery for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in Asia and perform an evidence-based analysis. Methods We performed a literature search in PubMed for research on laparoscopic metabolic surgery for the treatment of T2DM in Asia region. We classified the included studies based on the Oxford Center for Evidence Based Medicine guidelines. And performed and evidence analysis. Results In total, 205 articles were identified. 62.9% of the studies were from East Asia. The evidence of 26 studies are level I, 59 are level II. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) was the most commonly reported surgical procedure (63.1%) in Asia. The number of laparoscopic metabolic surgery for T2DM in Asian countries has increased rapidly over the last 8 years. We identified 16 studies which showed that laparoscopic metabolic surgery is an effective and safe treatment for T2DM in patients with a BMI of > 25 kg/m2 to < 35 kg/m2 in Asia. Conclusions Our results suggest that laparoscopic metabolic surgery might be an effective and safe treatment for T2DM patients with BMI < 35 kg/m2, and that LSG is the most commonly performed surgical procedure for this in Asia.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic diseases are one of the leading causes for disability and mortality in the Western world. The prevalence of these chronic diseases is expected to rise even further in the next decades. Insulin resistance (IR) and related metabolic disturbances are linked to ectopic fat deposition, which is the storage of excess lipids in metabolic organs such as liver and muscle. Notably, a vicious circle exists between IR and ectopic fat, together increasing the risk for the development of cardiometabolic diseases. Nutrition is a key-determining factor for both IR and ectopic fat deposition. The macronutrient composition of the diet may impact metabolic processes related to ectopic fat accumulation and IR. Interestingly, however, the metabolic phenotype of an individual may determine the response to a certain diet. Therefore, population-based nutritional interventions may not always lead to the most optimal (cardiometabolic) outcomes at the individual level, and differences in the metabolic phenotype may underlie conflicting findings related to IR and ectopic fat in dietary intervention studies. Detailed metabolic phenotyping will help to better understand the complex relationship between diet and metabolic regulation, and to optimize intervention outcomes. A subgroup-based approach that integrates, among others, tissue-specific IR, cardiometabolic parameters, anthropometrics, gut microbiota, age, sex, ethnicity, and psychological factors may thereby increase the efficacy of dietary interventions. Nevertheless, the implementation of more personalized nutrition may be complex, costly, and time consuming. Future studies are urgently warranted to obtain insight into a more personalized approach to nutritional interventions, taking into account the metabolic phenotype to ultimately improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk for cardiometabolic diseases.

Abstract
Diabetes-related conditions such as chronic hyperglycemia and related oxidative stress and inflammation were repeatedly associated with accelerated telomere shortening in epidemiological studies, although some findings are inconsistent. In present study, we aimed to assess the impact of disturbances in glucose metabolism on association between age and leukocyte telomere length (LTL) in the Ukrainian population. The study was conducted on the 119 adult subjects aged between 43 and 87 years residing in the Kyiv region, Ukraine. LTL was determined by a quantitative PCR-based method. LTL was negatively correlated with the measure of abdominal obesity such as waist-hip ratio, as well as with both fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and two-hour post-load glucose (2hPG) levels. Consistently with previous studies, a significant negative association between LTL and age was observed in individuals with normal (<5.6 mmol/L) FPG levels. Unexpectedly, however, no association was found in subjects with impaired glucose metabolism assessed by abnormal FPG or/and 2hPG levels. No association between LTL and age was observed in a logistic regression model; the association between LTL and age became significant after adjusting for FPG level. In the FPG-adjusted model, 1.6-time lower odds to have long telomere length were indicated for each 10 years increase in age. We hypothesize that the attenuation of association between LTL and age in hyperglycemic persons can likely be attributed to the interaction of multidirectional processes determining this relationship.

Abstract
There are ethnic differences recorded in glycaemic response and rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) between Chinese and Caucasian populations. Whether these differences are evident in matched healthy, lean, active, young adults is unclear. This study compares the postprandial glycaemic response of a group of Chinese participants (n = 49) with a group of similar Caucasians, (n = 48) aged 23.8 (±4.35 years), body mass index (BMI) 22.7 (±2.6) kg/m2, healthy (free from non-communicable disease), and lean (body fat % 23.28% (±5.04)). Participants undertook an oral glucose tolerance test to identify any significant differences in postprandial blood glucose response. Body fat percentage, body mass, age, physical activity, baseline glucose and HbA1c did not significantly differ between groups. Data from food frequency questionnaires indicated that the Chinese participants consumed less starchy foods, candy and “other” sweets and sugary drinks, and more rice than the Caucasians (all p ≤ 0.001), but not a greater overall intake of carbohydrates or any other macronutrient (all p > 0.05). The two groups’ postprandial blood glucose responses and 2-h incremental area under the curve values (iAUC)—156.67 (74.12) mmol/L 120 min for Caucasians versus 214.03 (77.49) mmol/L 120 min for Chinese—indicate significant differences (p = 0.003 and p < 0.001 respectively) between groups. Findings suggest that the difference between the two groups’ iAUC values do not relate to obvious lifestyle factors. The Chinese group were eating the least sugary and starchy food but had the highest iAUC. It is argued that the Chinese group in this investigation have the most favourable BMI, body fat percentage, and body mass, yet “poorest” glycaemic response.
