Abstract
Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the Curve of Spee (COS) depth and malocclusion characteristics in a population from Sibiu County, Romania. The research sought to understand how the COS's anatomical dimensions correlate with different classes of malocclusion and the position of the frontal teeth. Methods: A total of 265 participants from the Dentistry Ambulatory of the Military Hospital of Sibiu were included in this study. It employed digital intraoral scanning technology to measure the COS, overjet, and overbite, with malocclusion classification. Statistical analyses, including correlation and regression, were conducted to examine the relationships between COS depth, frontal teeth position, and malocclusion characteristics. Results: The average COS depth measured was 1.0564 mm, presenting variability when compared to existing literature. Most of the study participants had Class I malocclusion. A significant positive correlation between COS depth and overjet was identified, with no notable gender-based differences in these occlusal parameters. Conclusions: The findings affirm the integral role of COS in occlusal dynamics and malocclusion diagnosis. The COS measurement of a mean of 1.0564 mm, when compared to other results emphasizes the differences in occlusal curvature among various populations. The results contribute to a refined understanding of occlusal relationships, supporting the need for personalized orthodontic and prosthetic treatments based on precise anatomical measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The introduction of auxiliaries such as composite attachment has improved the force delivery of clear aligner (CA) therapy. However, the placement of the attachment may give rise to a flash, defined as excess resin around the attachment which may affect CA force delivery. This in vitro study aims to determine the differences in the force generated by the attachment in the presence or absence of flash in CA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Tristar Trubalance aligner sheets were used to fabricate the CAs. Thirty-four resin models were 3D printed and 17 each, were bonded with ellipsoidal or rectangular attachments on maxillary right central incisors. Fuji Prescale pressure film was used to measure the force generated by the attachment of CA. The images of colour density produced on the films were processed using a calibrated pressure mapping system utilising image processing techniques and topographical force mapping to quantify the force. The force measurement process was repeated after the flash was removed from the attachment using tungsten-carbide bur on a slow-speed handpiece. RESULTS The intraclass correlation coefficient showed excellent reliability (ICC = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.92-0.98). The average mean force exerted by ellipsoidal attachments with flash was 8.05 ± 0.16 N, while 8.11 ± 0.18 N was without flash. As for rectangular attachments, the average mean force with flash was 8.48 ± 0.27 N, while 8.53 ± 0.13 N was without flash. Paired t-test revealed no statistically significant difference in the mean force exerted by CA in the presence or absence of flash for both ellipsoidal (p = 0.07) and rectangular attachments (p = 0.41). Rectangular attachments generated statistically significantly (p < 0.001) higher mean force than ellipsoidal attachments for flash and without flash. CONCLUSION Although rectangular attachment generated a significantly higher force than ellipsoidal attachment, the force generated by both attachments in the presence or absence of flash is similar (p > 0.05).

Abstract
With the growing popularity of clear aligners, more patients have chosen to use them instead of traditional orthodontic braces to correct their malocclusions. Clear aligners offer distinct advantages over conventional fixed braces, such as limited aesthetic impact, the convenience of easily removing them for meals, improved accessibility for brushing and flossing, and a treatment approach that avoids the use of metal, minimizing potential irritation to the cheeks and gums. Manufacturers point out a disadvantage that can be administered in this type of treatment. Still, to our knowledge, a comprehensive review of the published literature assessing the adverse/negative effects of clear aligners has not yet been conducted. A systematic review, with or without meta-analysis, will be performed. The inclusion criteria will be studies involving individuals using clear aligners and reporting potential adverse/negative effects during or after treatment. No restrictions about time or language will be applied. The studies screening will be conducted in two stages. Two independent reviewers will initially evaluate the title and abstract under the eligibility criteria. Subsequently, the same two reviewers will examine the articles' full text in-depth. The results will be synthesized in the form of a narrative description and incorporate a meta-analysis if justified. Furthermore, we will present details regarding the sample characteristics, intervention, study objectives, methodologies employed, and primary findings. This study aims to investigate the potential adverse effects and their frequency among orthodontic patients wearing clear aligners. Moreover, the outcomes of this review have the potential to illuminate specific inherent limitations of aligner therapy as a comprehensive orthodontic approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gingivoperiosteoplasty (GPP) can avoid secondary alveolar bone graft in up to 60% of patients. The effects of GPP on maxillary growth are a concern. However, palatoplasty can also negatively impact facial growth. This study quantifies the isolated effects of GPP and cleft palate repair on maxillary growth at the age of mixed dentition. METHODS A single-institution, retrospective study of all patients undergoing primary reconstruction for unilateral cleft lip and alveolus (CLA) or cleft lip and palate (CLP) was performed. Study patients had lateral cephalograms at the age of mixed dentition. Patients were stratified into four groups: CLA with GPP (CLA + GPP), CLA without GPP (CLA - GPP), CLP with GPP (CLP + GPP), and CLP without GPP (CLP - GPP). Cephalometric measurements included the following: sella-nasion-point A (SNA), sella-nasion-point B (SNB), and A point-nasion-B point. Landmarks were compared between patient groups and to Eurocleft center D data. RESULTS One hundred ten patients met inclusion criteria: seven CLA - GPP, 16 CLA + GPP, 24 CLP - GPP, and 63 CLP + GPP patients. There were no significant differences in SNA, SNB, and A point-nasion-B point between CLA + GPP and CLA - GPP, or between CLP + GPP and CLP - GPP groups. In patients who did not receive GPP, SNA was significantly lower in patients with a cleft palate compared with patients with an intact palate ( P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in SNA or SNB of CLP - GPP or CLP + GPP groups when compared with Eurocleft data. CONCLUSION When controlling for the effects of cleft palate repair, GPP does not appear to negatively affect midface growth at the age of mixed dentition. Abstract
BACKGROUND Orthodontic treatment, particularly involving premolar extractions, has been a subject of ongoing debate within the orthodontic community. The impact of such interventions on the pharyngeal airway, a critical component of the respiratory system, remains a topic of exploration. OBJECTIVE This retrospective cephalometric study aims to investigate changes in pharyngeal airway dimensions following orthodontic treatment involving either all four or all five premolar extractions. METHODS A sample of 68 participants, extracted from orthodontic records, underwent cephalometric analysis to quantify changes in pharyngeal airway dimensions. The study compared two groups: those treated with all four premolar extractions (n=34) and those treated with all five premolar extractions (n=34). Cephalometric radiographs taken before and after treatment were analyzed, focusing on airway width, length, and volume. RESULTS Preliminary findings indicate significant changes in airway dimensions within each group. In the all four premolar extraction group, there was a statistically significant decrease in airway width (p=0.02) and volume (p=0.04). Similarly, the all five premolar extraction group exhibited significant reductions in airway width (p=0.03) and volume (p=0.02). However, the between-group comparisons revealed no significant differences in changes between the two groups. CONCLUSION This study sheds light on the intricate relationship between orthodontic interventions, specifically premolar extractions, and changes in pharyngeal airway dimensions. While significant changes were observed within each group, the lack of significant differences between the all four and all five premolar extraction groups raises intriguing questions about the specific impact of premolar extraction patterns on the upper airway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the change in tooth root volume using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a group of patients treated concurrently with clear aligners and an adjunctive photobiomodulation (PBM) device. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective cohort pilot study included the records of 32 consecutively treated clear aligner patients (23 female, 9 male) from the private practice of one orthodontist. The PBM group (n = 16) used the device once per day for 5 minutes per arch and was compared with a matched control group (n = 16). A semiautomated segmentation technique was used to obtain tooth volume of anterior teeth from CBCT imaging prior to (T0) and during or immediately following (T1) orthodontic treatment with clear aligners. The change in root volume between time points was assessed. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between the pre- and posttreatment root volumes of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth, regardless of which intervention group the patient belonged to (P > .05). There was also no difference in the mean percentage change in root volume between clear aligner patients in this study who were treated with the PBM device compared with a matched control group (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS Clear aligner patients in this study who changed their aligners every 3 to 5 days and used adjunctive photobiomodulation therapy did not experience clinically relevant orthodontically induced external root resorption. Due to the small sample size and measurement error in the root segmentation process, the results should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Informed consent is a legal process intended to protect patients' rights and ensure ethical medical practice. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess dentists' practice of obtaining informed consent and adherence to the recommended guidelines, and to investigate the types of consent, barriers, the process, and the quality of the information included in preoperative informed consent for endodontic treatment in Saudi Arabia. METHODS A validated self-administered online questionnaire was developed and distributed to dentists performing endodontic treatment in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using a snowball sampling technique for three months (May to July). RESULTS Of the 452 participants included in the study, 79.4% (n = 359) obtained informed consent, and 63.5% of them followed the recommended guidelines. Dentists with over 10 years of experience used informed consent regularly (p < .005). The main barrier to obtaining informed consent was the lack of a standardized format (28.5%). Furthermore, only 36.3% of the participants obtained written informed consent. Most participants (75.4%, n = 341) reported that they discuss and disclose information about the treatment to patients themselves. Less than 5% of participants include all listed criteria in their consent process. CONCLUSION Although obtaining informed consent prior to endodontic treatment was a broadly adopted process among the participants, their practice appears to be inadequate. Issues such as the type and quality of informed consent need to be improved through educational and awareness programs and strict implementation by responsible authorities.

Abstract
PURPOSE The goal was to investigate whether the application of antiseptics and fluorides during orthodontic treatment affects the biomechanics of the levelling of dental arches by changing the working properties of nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires. METHODS The sample consisted of 60 individuals aged 12-22 years (53% females). There were 20 individuals in each experimental group: (I) individuals conducted regular oral hygiene, (II) individuals used a high concentration of fluorides for intensive prophylaxis for the first month; and (III) individuals used chlorhexidine in the same manner. NiTi alloy archwires (dimensions 0.508 × 0.508 mm) were analyzed 3 months after intraoral exposure and compared to as-received NiTi wires. Elastic modulus, yield strength, springback ratio, and modulus of resilience were calculated. Dimensions of the dental arches were analyzed when NiTi alloy (T1) was placed intraorally and after 3 months (T2). Change was quantified as the difference in dimensions (T2-T1). Anterior width-to-length ratio was used as a measure for dental arch shape. RESULTS Intraoral exposure reduced elastic modulus, yield strength, springback ratio, modulus of resilience, loading, and unloading forces of NiTi wires (p ≤ 0.021). Chlorhexidine mouthwash and gel with high concentration of fluorides did not change these properties more than saliva with regular hygiene. The amount of change of dental arch shape in the maxilla and mandible did not differ significantly between the experimental groups. CONCLUSION Using antiseptics or a high concentration of fluorides during orthodontic treatment does not significantly affect the mechanical properties of NiTi wires and would not have clinical implications in changing orthodontic biomechanics.

Abstract
Objective: This article aims to review the safety and efficacy of the Er:YAG laser in debonding dental accessories. Methods: This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Articles published between 2010 and 2022 on the removal of dental accessories using erbium laser were searched. The selected articles were then classified according to the accessories used: adhesives, brackets, restorations, or implant crowns. Enamel surface roughness, shear bond strength, adhesive remnant index, duration time (t), pulp chamber temperature (T), morphology (M), and other variables were then noted. Results: The dental accessories and adhesives used were described along with the laser parameters used, such as frequency, pulse width, irradiation time, scanning mode, water-air cooling, and other variables. Conclusions: Laser removal using Er:YAG laser of dental accessories such as brackets, crowns, and veneers is fundamentally safe, time-saving, and does not cause damage to the enamel nor the underlying dentin. However, there was no distinct advantage with laser removal seen, such as those residual adhesives of brackets on the tooth surface and temporary adhesives of restorations.

Abstract
Anchorage is a challenge and essential issue for an orthodontist in determining the success of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic anchorage is defined as resistance to unwanted tooth movement. Mini-implant is one of the devices that can be used as an anchor in orthodontic treatment. Many cases have reported successful treatment using mini-implant, but there are cases where mini-implants may fail. Failure of mini-implants can affect orthodontic treatment, and it is known that several factors may lead to mini-implant loss in orthodontic treatment. This systematic review aimed to determine the factors influencing mini-implant failure in orthodontic treatment. Articles were selected from electronic databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, The Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect) from January 2015 until 2023 according to the PRISMA method (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) under the PEOS (Population-Exposure-Outcome-StudyType) framework questions for systematic review. The study was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (CRD42022337684). All data collected were in English, and filtering was done by eliminating duplicate data, meta-analysis, case reports, case series, mini-reviews, and animal studies. The analysis was further divided into three groups, that is, patient-related, implant-related, and operator-related and operator-related (A graphical abstract provided as a Supplementary information [available in the online version]). Twenty-one articles were identified according to the inclusion criteria in the form of retrospective, prospective, in vivo, and randomized controlled trial studies. Mini-implant failures due to patient-related showed six etiological factors, failures due to implant-related had eight etiological factors, and only one factor was operator-related, which may lead to mini-implant failure. The data was extracted without a computerized system and only in English. Mini-implant failure can be caused by many factors; we could not accuse one major factor as a cause. However, the quality or condition of the bones and oral hygiene are factors that play a significant role in obtaining the stability of implants. Mini-implant failure is highly influenced by poor oral hygiene and peri-implant inflammation. Comprehensive diagnostic prior to mini-implant insertion should be appropriately considered. This systematic review describes several factors that can influence mini-implant failure, divided into three groups: patient-related, implant-related, and operator-related (A graphical abstract provided as a Supplementary information [available in the online version]).

Abstract
Introduction In orthodontics, having a beautiful smile is very important. It is frequently the main driving force behind people's efforts to enhance their oral health and professional opportunities. Orthodontic and dental treatment planning might benefit greatly when evaluating the aesthetic components of a patient's smile in individuals with varying skeletal growth patterns. In order to help orthodontists achieve the best possible functional and aesthetic results for their patients, the eight elements of a balanced smile are essential to orthodontic therapy. This study aims to evaluate, in comparison to Skeletal Class I Average instances, eight balanced smile components in patients with Skeletal Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns. Methodology A total of 45 patients aged 14-30 were selected from the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Out-Patient Department (OPD). They were divided into three groups: Skeletal Class I Average, Skeletal Class II Vertical, and Skeletal Class II Horizontal cases based on their malocclusion type. Patients were made to smile in response to a joke or social conversation and their photos were analyzed using Photopea software (Photopea Inc., Prague, Czech Republic) to determine the eight components of a balanced smile. Result Three skeletal classes' worth of smile components were examined in this study. Lip line measurements varied greatly; the highest mean measurement was found in the Skeletal Class II Vertical group (p-value < 0.01). There were no noteworthy correlations found between smile arc and upper lip curvature. Measurements of lateral negative space did not show any significant group differences. On the other hand, a significant correlation was seen in smile symmetry, where asymmetrical smiles were more prevalent in Skeletal Classes I and II Vertical groups (p-value is 0.00072). While arch symmetry suggested a potential relationship between the groups, dental midline alignment revealed possible associations. Conclusion Assessing the aesthetic components of smiles in patients with varying skeletal growth patterns, i.e., contrasting Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns with Class I Average cases, provides valuable information about the connection between smile aesthetics and facial skeletal structure. The results suggest that when compared to Class I typical instances, Skeletal Class II Vertical and Horizontal growth patterns may show clear variations in certain aspects of an attractive smile. Comprehending these variations is essential for devising treatment strategies for patients, and additional investigation is needed. In order to obtain optimal aesthetic outcomes, treatment strategies should strive to optimize smile aesthetics while addressing personalized treatment plans that take into account the patient's unique facial features, smiling preferences, and functional requirements.

Abstract
Objectives To study the facial morphology in children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate by applying numerical facial analysis on photographs for planning and evaluating treatment outcomes. Methods This descriptive study was conducted from March 2020 to July 2020 in the Department of Oral Pathology, University of Health Sciences and Cleft Lip and Palate Hospital, Lahore Pakistan. A total of 104 patients of both genders with an age range from three months to thirteen years were included. Photographs of the participants were taken to measure facial anthropometrical landmarks including facial height, nose width, mouth width and inter canthal distance. The association between facial measurements with gender and phenotype and across age groups were computed keeping the confidence level at 95%. Results Mean age of the children was 72.43±44.2 months with slight male predominance. Thirty-one percent presented with bilateral cleft lip and palate followed by unilateral cleft lip and plate. Total mean facial height, nose width and mouth width were found to be 143.46±21.52mm, 32.24±5.03mm and 33.71±4.38mm respectively. Intercanthal distance was measured to be 31.04±5.99mm. Statistically significant association was observed between gender and facial height, nose width, mouth width and Intercanthal distance. Conclusion Facial anthropometric measures done on frontal photographs can be used to identify the facial landmarks in children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate in low resource stings that may help surgeons in getting better aesthetic outcomes. These landmarks vary between ethnic groups therefore these should be specific to a particular race and ethnicity so as to ensure proper aesthetics and improved quality of life for the children of all nations.

Abstract
Failures in orthognathic surgery are associated with different factors, including those related to untreated or undiagnosed preoperative temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This systematic review aimed to assess potential alterations in the condylar head following orthognathic surgery. A systematic search for randomised controlled trials and retrospective studies was performed. For inclusion in the review, studies had to meet the following eligibility criteria according to the PICO framework: Patients: patients with orthognathic deformity and temporomandibular dysfunction (or temporomandibular osteoarthritis); Intervention: patients submitted to orthognathic surgery concomitantly with TMJ disjunction; Control: patients undergoing only orthognathic surgery with or without presurgical data; and Outcome: changes in temporomandibular joint position and volume. Nine studies met all the inclusion criteria and were selected for qualitative analysis. The results of this review show that simultaneous articular disc repositioning and orthognathic surgery provide better results in patients with preoperatively diagnosed condylar osteoarthritic changes. In conclusion, condylar remodelling (resorption/deposition) and its extent are determined by the direction of condylar displacement during surgery. Other factors such as age are also associated with the development of condylar resorption.

Abstract
Teeth are considered unique as fingerprints for identification purposes. Their structure and resilience mean they can remain for thousands and millions of years withstanding extreme conditions, including burning. During burning, bones undergo carbonization at approximately 400°C and calcination at approximately 700°C. This study aimed to investigate the effects of carbonization and calcination on dental tissue. It involved nondestructive analyses of 58 extracted human teeth before and after burning, using x-ray diffraction, micro-CT, and high-resolution confocal microscopy. The results revealed that during carbonization, dentin volume decreased in two thirds of the sample, accompanied by crack formation and significant reduction in hydroxyapatite crystal size (p<0.001). During calcination, dentin volume decreased in all teeth, along with a significant deepening of the cracks (p<0.001), while enamel crystal size increased slightly. Initial changes in teeth occurred at lower temperatures than had once been assumed, as indicated by the cracks during carbonization, and there was up to a 36% decrease in dentin volume during calcination, which should be considered when measuring burnt teeth. The results of this research provide new insight into understanding dental tissue response to burning. Thus, dental remains may contribute to the knowledge needed to reconstruct anthropological and forensic scenarios involving burning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Presurgical plate therapy has been widely accepted as a treatment prior to palatal cleft closure. The effects of passive presurgical plate therapy on cleft morphology prior to single-stage unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) repair were quantified. PATIENTS AND METHODS We compared the dimensions of cleft width and cleft area (true cleft and palatal cleft) measured preoperatively at 2 European cleft centers. Center A performed single-stage UCLP repair in 8-month-old infants without any presurgical orthopedic treatment. Center B initiated passive presurgical plate therapy immediately after the birth of the neonates, followed by single-stage UCLP repair at 8 months of age. RESULTS We included 28 patients with complete UCLP from Center A and 12 patients from Center B. The average anterior width of the true cleft before surgery was significantly smaller in infants at Center B than that in Center A (p = 0.001) with 95% confidence interval of (1.8, 5.7) mm, but the average posterior width was similar in the 2 groups. The mean presurgical true cleft area amounted to 106.8 mm2 (SD = 42.4 mm2) at Center A and 71.9 mm2 (SD = 32.2 mm2) at Center B, with a confidence interval for the difference being (9.8, 60.1) mm2. This corresponded to a 32.7% reduction of the true cleft area when passive presurgical plate therapy was used for the first 8 months of the infants' life. CONCLUSION Passive presurgical plate therapy in UCLP significantly reduced the cleft area. Implications for the subsequent surgical outcome might depend on the surgical technique used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the role of body posture and skeletal class in the symmetrical activity of chewing muscles. METHODS Descriptive study with association. Skeletal class measured by the Steiner method. Postural analysis through APECS mobile application for forward head posture and shoulder discrepancy, and surface electromyography with Biopac® device. RESULTS The skeletal class, forward head posture, and shoulder discrepancy presented statistical association with the symmetrical electromyographic response of digastric muscles and masseter muscles during swallowing. DISCUSSION This study exhibited a positive relationship between digastric muscle symmetry and skeletal class during swallowing. The compensation of the hyoid system explains these results, showing that skeletal Class III has better electromyographic balance. In contrast, masseter muscle symmetry during swallowing presented a negative relationship with skeletal class. The stabilization role that this muscle plays during swallowing explains these findings, caused by the different lengths and direction of this muscle in skeletal Class III.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES People living with HIV (PLWH) have been shown to have lower bone density at the spine, hip, and radius. However, whether a similar bone phenotype is seen in craniofacial bones is not known. The goal of this study was to evaluate the bone microarchitecture of the mandibular condyle in PLWH. METHODS We recruited 212 participants, which included 88 HIV-negative participants and 124 PLWH on combination antiretroviral therapy with virological suppression from a single academic center. Each participant filled out a validated temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain screening questionnaire and had cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) of their mandibular condyles. Qualitative radiographic evidence of temporomandibular joint disorders-osteoarthritis (TMJD-OA) assessment and quantitative microarchitecture analysis of their mandibular condylar bones were conducted. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference in either self-reported TMD or in radiographic evidence of TMJD-OA in PLWH compared with HIV-negative controls. Linear regression analysis revealed that positive HIV status remained significantly associated with increased trabecular thickness, decreased cortical porosity, and increased cortical bone volume fraction after adjusting for race, diabetes, sex, and age. CONCLUSION PLWH have increased mandibular condylar trabecular bone thickness and cortical bone volume fraction compared with HIV-negative controls.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressures, which are reflective of respiratory muscle strength, in skeletal Class II patients with different growth patterns (horizontal, average, and vertical) and to correlate those with airway dimension. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with a Class II skeletal base seeking orthodontic treatment were assigned to the following groups: average, horizontal, and vertical growth pattern. The control group (n = 14) comprised patients with a Class I skeletal base and average growth pattern. Airway dimensions were obtained using cone-beam computed tomography scans, and a spirometer with a pressure transducer was used for assessment of MIP and MEP. Routine spirometry for assessment of lung function was also performed. RESULTS No significant differences were found in maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures for the study groups in comparison with the control group. Class I patients had significantly greater oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway volumes compared with the study groups. No significant difference in minimal cross-section area of the airway was observed among groups. A weak positive correlation between maximal inspiratory pressure and airway volume was observed. CONCLUSIONS Although Class I patients displayed significantly greater oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway volumes, there was no significant difference in respiratory muscle strength or airway function between Class II patients with different growth patterns and the Class I control group. The findings underscore the significance of exploring factors beyond craniofacial growth patterns that may contribute to sleep-related breathing disorders.

Abstract
A well-aligned dentition is more conducive to periodontal health, which is necessary for successful orthodontic therapy. Maintaining good dental hygiene is crucial for effective treatment, and patient cooperation, education, motivation, and attitude are all important components. Orthodontists must routinely check in with their patients to see whether they are maintaining their oral hygiene and if they are using any additional assistance. Negligence on the part of the patient may be the cause of poor treatment outcomes. This study aims to show how patient education can affect treatment outcomes and the development of a functional, aesthetically pleasing, and healthy dentition. Aim This study aims to investigate awareness, attitude, and periodontal health knowledge among orthodontic patients. Objectives The study explores the level of awareness and knowledge regarding periodontal health among orthodontic patients, examining its correlation with factors such as age, attitude, and duration of orthodontic treatment. Additionally, it aims to gauge the extent of education received by orthodontic patients regarding proper oral hygiene practices and the potential repercussions of neglecting them. Methods A questionnaire-based study with a cross-sectional design was performed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A total of 428 participants were randomly selected from several private orthodontic clinics and hospitals. The participants in the study were individuals currently undergoing treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. Information was gathered using a self-administered questionnaire. Results The patients undergoing orthodontic treatment have a moderate understanding of periodontal disease about dental plaque. The level of awareness of periodontal health was 41%, and the level of knowledge about periodontal health was 51%. When it came to periodontal health, adult orthodontic patients had a positive attitude toward fixed orthodontic treatment (mean score = 0.75). Subjects' attitudes regarding fixed orthodontic treatment were significantly impacted by the patient's consistency with his/her dental checkups (p value = 0.02). Conclusion The patients' periodontal health awareness was moderate, while their periodontal health knowledge was fair. Orthodontic patient's awareness levels, as well as knowledge levels, showed significant differences in age and duration but not sex. Results showed no significant difference among the attitude levels of orthodontic patients and age, sex, and duration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount of external apical root resorption in patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment with clear aligners evaluated using cone beam computed tomography. METHODS Studies that evaluated external apical root resorption before and after comprehensive orthodontic treatment with clear aligners were assessed by performing an electronic search from 5 databases comprising PubMed, SCOPUS, EBSCO, Cochrane Library, and LILACS and manual searches in the relevant journals and the reference lists of the included studies. Database search, elimination of duplicate studies, and data extraction were performed independently by 2 authors. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Risk of Bias in Non-randomised Studies-of Interventions and the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias Tool. Studies that reported the tooth length or volume were used for quantitative analyses. RESULTS Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. The overall root length after clear aligner treatment was significantly decreased compared with the pre-treatment length using cone beam computed tomography (mean differences = -0.56 mm, 95% confidence interval [-0.73, -0.38], P < .00001). However, only the maxillary central incisors, maxillary lateral incisors, and mandibular central incisors had significant reduction in root length. The meta-analysis from 3 studies also indicated that the root volume of the upper incisors also significantly decreased (mean differences = -13.34 mm3, 95% confidence interval [-16.57, -10.10], P < .00001). CONCLUSIONS Current evidence suggests that clear aligners can cause minimal root resorption. The highest amount of root resorption was observed in the maxillary central incisors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the effect of office bleaching of teeth bonded with Transbond XTTM (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA) (TRXT) and the use of color change resistant Orthocem (FGM, Joinville, Brazil) in bracket bonding on coffee-induced enamel discoloration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty premolars were distributed in equal numbers (n = 20) to group 1 (TRXT + distilled water), group 2 (TRXT + coffee solution), group 3 (TRXT + coffee solution + bleaching), and group 4 (Orthocem + coffee solution). Color was measured using a SpectroShade Micro (MHT, International, Verona, Italy) device at the beginning (T0), after coloring (T1), after bleaching (T1B), and after debonding (T2). ΔE color change values were calculated as T1-T0, T1B-T0 and T2-T0 differences. The conformity of the data to the normal distribution was examined with the Shapiro-Wilk test. Multiple comparisons were made with Tamhane's T2 test and Tukey's HSD test using one-way analysis of variance in the comparison of normally distributed data, and multiple comparisons were made with Dunn's test using the Kruskal-Wallis H test for comparison of non-normally distributed data. The significance level was set at p < 0.050. RESULTS A statistically significant (p < 0.001) difference was found between the T1-T0 and T2-T0 stages for group 1-4 ΔE values. A statistically significant (p < 0.001) difference was also found when the T1B-T0 ΔE values of group 3 were compared with the T1-T0 ΔE values of groups 1, 2, and 4. CONCLUSIONS After coffee-induced enamel discoloration, bleaching of teeth bonded with TRXT produced acceptable color difference of the incisal, middle, and gingival regions of the crown. In teeth bonded with Orthocem, acceptable color difference was seen only in the middle of the crown. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The presented study will guide the clinician on how enamel discoloration side effect of fixed orthodontic appliance can reduce.

Abstract
Purpose There is an overall paucity of data examining the specific details of orthodontic patients' patterns or orthodontic service disruptions possibly influenced by COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on orthodontic clinic disruption regarding the change in adult patients' characteristics and decisions of orthodontic treatment devices. Patients and Methods A retrospective sample of 311 patients receiving orthodontic treatment from 2018 to 2022 were collected and divided into two groups: before (n = 167) and during (n = 144) the COVID-19 pandemic. Demographics, dental indices, the index of complexity outcome and need (ICON), and the degree of treatment difficulty were analyzed. Results There were fewer students among patients during the COVID-19 pandemic than before (24.5% versus 35.9%, P = 0.036). Compared with patients before the pandemic, more patients selected ceramic brackets or Invisalign during the pandemic (P = 0.022). There were higher percentage of class I dental malocclusions among patients during than before the COVID-19 pandemic (P = 0.044). Moreover, the ICON score and the score of the degree of treatment difficulty were both significantly lower for patients during than before the COVID-19 pandemic (63.9±14.0 versus 58.3±15.3, P=0.001 and 7.4±2.6 versus 6.8±2.6, P=0.049, respectively). Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic influenced the characteristics and decisions of orthodontic patients. Those who still came to the orthodontic clinic despite the COVID-19 outbreak may have been those with less malocclusion severity and treatment difficulty. Besides, during the time of covid-19 pandemic, more patients chose ceramic bracket and Invisalign as their orthodontic treatment device rather than conventional or self-ligating metal brackets.

Abstract
Objectives: Teeth bleaching is an accepted and modern treatment in cosmetic dentistry. Bleaching agents may affect amalgam restorations and increase mercury release; therefore, patients are at increased risk of mercury exposure in the body. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polishing and universal bonding application on mercury release from aged amalgams exposed to bleaching. Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro experimental study, 64 dental amalgam specimens with dimensions of 3×5×10 were prepared and divided into two experimental and control groups. Each group was further divided into 4 subgroups and received one of the following treatments: no intervention, surface bonding, polishing, or polishing and surface bonding. Subsequently, the samples were immersed in bleaching agent containing 7% hydrogen peroxide and the amount of mercury released after 96h was measured. The results were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests (α≤0.05). Results: The results showed that the type of solution (P<0.05) and surface treatment (P<0.001) significantly affected the level of mercury release. However, there was no significant interaction between surface treatment methods in the bleaching group and those in the phosphate buffer group (P=0.621). Conclusion: Bleaching agents were found to enhance mercury release from dental amalgam. The application of polishing and universal bonding on amalgam surfaces exhibited significant effects on the reduction of the mercury release.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Did the COVID-19 pandemic affect orthodontists' use of remote monitoring platforms? The goal of this research was to examine orthodontists' experiences implementing remote monitoring platforms before, during, and after the initial COVID-19 lockdown. METHODS In this descriptive cross-sectional survey study, an electronic, anonymous questionnaire consisting of a series of 31 short-answer and multiple-choice questions was administered to an international sampling of practicing orthodontists. The target population in the study included currently practicing orthodontists who were graduates of an accredited orthodontic residency program. Participants were recruited in 2021 through collaboration with the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Partners in Research Program and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Orthodontic Alumni Association. Descriptive analysis was conducted, reporting frequency (N and %) distributions for each question. The questionnaire aimed to describe whether orthodontists incorporated remote monitoring platforms into their practices, their experiences doing so, and if the COVID-19 pandemic influenced their use of these resources. RESULTS Orthodontists' use of remote monitoring platforms was negligible prior to the pandemic; however, a quarter of surveyed orthodontists began using a remote monitoring platform during COVID-19 and nearly all respondents plan to continue using remote monitoring for the foreseeable future. Approximately half of orthodontists believe most patients' treatment progress can be monitored to the standard of care between in-person orthodontic appointments using remote monitoring platforms. Half of the orthodontists who do not currently use a remote monitoring platform in their practice are interested in learning more about how to implement one. CONCLUSIONS The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in the interest and adoption of remote monitoring platforms in orthodontic practices. Most orthodontists had not incorporated remote monitoring platforms into their practices prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this study revealed that a subset of orthodontists utilized the pandemic as motivation to incorporate remote monitoring into their practices and an additional group of orthodontists were interested in incorporating one in the future. Remote monitoring platforms garnered interest and importance with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic and may only have an increasing role in the field in years to come.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress distributions and possible amount of movement in the maxillofacial region resulting from different maxillary advancement protocols in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. MATERIALS AND METHODS A unilateral cleft lip and palate model (CLP model) with Goslon score 4 was created for finite element analysis. Three different protocols were compared: Group 1: usage of a face mask with elastics placed at a 30? angle to the occlusal plane over a conventional acrylic plate; Group 2: usage of a face mask with elastics placed at a 30? angle to the occlusal plane over miniplates placed in the infrazygomatic crest region; Group 3: usage of elastic from the menton plate placed in the mandible to the infrazygomatic plates in the maxilla. RESULTS Dental effects were greater in the maxillary protraction protocol with a face mask over a conventional acrylic plate (Von Misses Stress Values; Group 1?=?cleft side:0.076, non-cleft side:0.077; Group 2?=?cleft side:0.004, non-cleft side: 0.003; Group 3?=?cleft side:0.0025; non-cleft side:0.0015), whereas skeletal effects were greater in maxillary protraction protocols with face mask using skeletal anchorage (Von Misses Stress Values; Group 1:0.008; Group 2:0.02; Group 3:0.0025). The maximum amount of counterclockwise rotation of the maxilla as a result of protraction was observed in traditional acrylic plate face mask protocol, and the minimum amount was observed by using elastics between infrazygomatic plates and menton plate. CONCLUSIONS In individuals with unilateral cleft lip and palate with Goslon score 4, it was observed that the skeletally anchored face mask caused more skeletal impact and displacement than both the traditional acrylic plate face mask model and the pure skeletally supported maxillary protraction model. CLINICAL RELEVANCE When planning maxillary protraction treatment in patients with cleft lip and palate, it should be considered that more movement in the sagittal plane might be expected on the cleft side than the non-cleft side, and miniplate and screws on the cleft side are exposed to more stress when using infrazygomatic plates as skeletal anchorage.

Abstract
By correctly repositioning teeth, orthodontic therapy improves both the function and appearance of an occlusion. The relationship between teeth and the tissues that surround and support them significantly influences these alterations. With ever more adults seeking orthodontic care, orthodontists are increasingly seeing patients with periodontal issues. Concerns about the patient's appearance, such as uneven gingival margins or functional issues caused by inflammatory periodontal diseases, should be accounted for when designing orthodontic treatment plans. Furthermore, orthodontics may increase the chances of saving and recovering a degraded dentition in cases of severe periodontitis. Today, general dentists, dontists, and orthodontists play integrative roles that enable them to achieve the best possible results for their patients. This review will improve the results of interdisciplinary treatments and increase cooperation between dental specialists by drawing attention to the essential connection between orthodontics and periodontics in regular clinical practice.

Abstract
AIM The sulfhydryl (thiols) group of glutathione plays an important role in the neutralization of foreign organic compounds and the reduction in peroxides. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the concentration of sulfhydryl groups in the gingival tissue of healthy individuals and those with gingivitis or periodontitis, and to examine the differences between these groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS To assess the concentration of sulfhydryl groups (thiols) in the gingival tissue of healthy individuals and those with gingivitis or periodontitis, we used spectrophotometric analysis using dithionitrobenzoate (DTNB) as a reagent to measure the accessible sulfhydryl groups present in gingival tissue proteins. The sample was divided into three distinct groups: individuals with periodontal health, gingivitis, and periodontitis, and different indices were used to assess the periodontal status of the participants. Next, a statistical analysis was conducted to compare the concentrations of sulfhydryl groups among the different groups of patients. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study showed significantly decreased levels of sulfhydryl (thiols) groups in gingival tissue from patients with gingivitis and periodontitis, compared with healthy people (control group). These results confirm the role of sulfhydryl (thiols) groups in defense against free radicals. They share a significant role in detoxification, signal transduction, apoptosis, and various other functions at the molecular level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To critically appraise and assess the currently observed evidence about the difference in orthodontic treatment duration between clear aligners and fixed appliances in crowding cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic search without limitations was conducted from inception to June 2023 covering nine databases: The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Trip, CINAHL via EBSCO, EMBASE via OVID and ProQuest. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and matched non-randomized studies were included in this systematic review. Risk of Bias was assessed via Cochrane's tool (RoB 2) for RCTs and ROBINS-I tool for non-randomized studies. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) framework was employed to evaluate the overall quality of evidence. RESULTS Out of the 3537 articles initially identified, ten eligible studies were included in this systematic review; six were RCTs. Only one study offered extraction-based treatment, while the other nine adopted non-extraction treatments. According to the GRADE, there is low evidence that treatment duration in mild to moderate crowding cases with clear aligners is similar to that in fixed orthodontic appliances. Meta-analysis was not administered due to high inconsistency. CONCLUSIONS Based on currently available information, there was no significant difference in the treatment duration between the CA and FA groups in mild to moderate crowding cases. Further well-performed RCTs, especially in severe cases, are required. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Time efficiency is an essential outcome measure for clinical orthodontic practice. While the type of appliance used is a critical determinant of treatment duration, orthodontists should be aware of other factors that can significantly impact treatment time, such as patient and treatment-related factors.

Abstract
The significant rise in the use of clear aligners for orthodontic treatment is attributed to their aesthetic appeal, enhancing patient appearance and self-confidence. The aim of this study is to evaluate the aligners' response to common staining agents (coffee, black tea, Coca-Cola, and Red Bull) in color and chemical stability. Polyurethane-based thermoformed and 3D-printed aligners from four brands were exposed to common beverages to assess color change using a VITA Easyshade compact colorimeter after 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 7 days, as well as chemical stability using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The brand, beverage, and manufacturing method significantly influence color stability. ATR-FTIR analysis revealed compositional differences, with variations in response to beverage exposure affecting the integrity of polymer bonds. Color change analysis showed coffee as the most potent staining agent, particularly affecting Tera Harz TC85 aligners, while ClearCorrect aligners exhibited the least susceptibility. 3D-printed aligners showed a greater color change compared to thermoformed ones. Aligners with a PETG outer layer are more resistant to stains and chemical alterations than those made of polyurethane. Additionally, 3D-printed polyurethane aligners stain more than thermoformed ones. Therefore, PETG-layered aligners are a more reliable choice for maintaining the aesthetic integrity of aligners.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigates the motivations for orthognathic surgery and assesses the quality of life (QoL) and satisfaction among patients treated at a hospital over 12 months. METHODS We employed an Arabic version of the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), used pre-surgery and at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months post-surgery. This included demographic data, the OQLQ, and visual analogue scales (VAS). The OQLQ, originally by Cunningham et al., was translated and adapted by Al-Asfour et al. Additional validated questions were added to both pre- and post-operative surveys. RESULTS Of 136 participants (51 males, 85 females, average age 25.1), most underwent surgery for facial aesthetics (85.2%) and bite correction (57.3%). Treatments included various osteotomies. OQLQ scores significantly dropped from 63.3% pre-surgery to 23% at 6 months, showing QoL improvement. 97.8% reported better psychological status post-surgery (p = 0.0001), with 94.1% satisfaction at 6 months (p = 0.0001). CONCLUSION The orthognathic surgery yielded positive outcomes in functional and psychological aspects, leading to high satisfaction and improved QoL in patients with dentofacial deformity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neodymium-iron-boron magnets have been suggested as a contemporary method for accelerating the process of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). A limited number of clinical trials evaluated their effectiveness in accelerating OTM which is desirable for both orthodontists and patients. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a low-intensity static magnetic field (SMF) in accelerating upper canine retraction movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventeen patients (mean age 20.76 ± 2.9 years) with their orthodontic treatment decision to extract the upper and lower first premolars due to bimaxillary protrusion malocclusion were included in this split-mouth study. Canine retraction was performed using Nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) closed-coil springs (150 g of force on each side). The experimental side received SMF via an auxiliary wire that carried 4-neodymium iron-born magnets with an air gap of 2 mm between the magnets to produce a magnetic field density of 414 mT in the region corresponding to the lateral ligament of the upper canine. To determine the rate of upper canine retraction and upper molar drift, alginate impressions were taken once a month to create plaster casts, which were analyzed digitally via a three-dimensional method. RESULTS The rate of upper canine retraction was significantly greater (P < 0.05) on the SMF side than that on the control side during the first and second months, with an overall duration (19.16%) that was greater than that on the control side. The peak acceleration occurred during the second month (38.09%). No significant differences in upper molar drift were detected between the experimental and control sides (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION A low-intensity static magnetic field was effective at accelerating upper canine retraction. The difference between the two sides was statistically significant but may not be clinically significant. The SMF did not affect upper molar drift during the upper canine retraction phase. TRIAL REGISTRATION The trial was retrospectively registered at the ISRCTN registry ( ISRCTN59092624 ) (31/05/2022).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The primary objective of this study was to assess the validity of the KPG index in predicting the difficulty of treatment involving impacted maxillary canines. The secondary objective was to assess the reliability and reproducibility of the index. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study was conducted on 96 maxillary impacted canines (MIC) in 60 patients aged 13-35 years. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were used to predict the treatment difficulty of MIC using the KPG index. Patient case files were assessed for the actual difficulty encountered in treating MIC. Cohen's kappa correlation coefficient was used for intra-observer reliability and Kendell's W test was used for inter-observer reliability. Spearman's correlation coefficient test was used to assess the correlation between predicted and actual treatment. RESULTS Easy and moderately difficult cases exhibited a moderate correlation between actual and predicted treatment outcomes, whereas difficult cases displayed a weak correlation. The perfect correlation was observed exclusively in extremely difficult cases. The intra-observer reliability for assessing CBCT scans using the KPG guide was found to be 0.88, and the inter-rater reliability was 0.94. CONCLUSION The KPG index displayed 87%, 71%, 50% and 100% validity in easy, moderately difficult, difficult, and extremely difficult cases, respectively. This index showed good reliability and reproducibility. However, it is imperative to consider a multitude of other factors, including the patient's age, presence of associated root resorption in adjacent teeth, and duration of treatment, to make an informed decision between surgical exposure and extraction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess and compare the validity of 2D modified Easy Box and measurement of the Beta angle on standard conventional orthopantomogram (OPG) versus 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) OPG-constructed view. DESIGN A retrospective agreement study. METHODS The aim of this study was to construct an Easy Box on a standard conventional OPG and to validate this novel method by comparing it with the Easy Box method on 3D CBCT. After approval from the Ethics Committee, OPG and CBCT radiographs were obtained for the study from departmental records and five private practices in the same location (Indore, India). The radiographs were selected based on record availability and with written consent from the participants before the commencement of the study. The records were analysed to enable a comparison and to assess the accuracy of Easy Box construction on both 3D CBCT and standard conventional OPG radiographs. The location of the impacted canine within the Easy Box boundaries and the measurement of the Beta angle were determined on both views. RESULTS A perfect agreement was obtained for the comparison of 3D Easy Box CBCT analysis with 2D modified Easy Box on OPG for impacted maxillary canines (Kappa = 1.0). A Bland-Altman (LoA) analysis showed no proportional bias in the comparison of the Beta angle on 3D and 2D OPG radiographs. CONCLUSION Beta angle and 2D modified Easy Box on a conventional OPG yield similar results when compared to Easy Box on 3D CBCT OPG-constructed view. The standard OPG was valuable and cost-effective, particularly in the early stages of diagnosis and treatment planning, either as a substitute or when CBCT was unavailable.

Abstract
The study compared the soft-tissue response to hard-tissue movement among different Class III vertical facial types after orthognathic surgery (OGS). The study included 90 consecutive adult patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent two-jaw OGS. Patients were divided into three groups (high, medium, and low angle) based on the presurgical Frankfort-mandibular plane angle. Cone-beam computerized tomographs were taken before surgery and after debonding. Soft- and hard-tissue linear and angular measurements were performed using three-dimensional reconstruction images. One-way analysis of variance was used for intergroup comparisons. Soft tissue tended to respond more to hard-tissue movement in the lower lip area in patients with low angle (mean = 0.089, SD = 0.047, p = 0.023), whereas no significant difference was observed for other sites. Consistently, L1/Li thickness increased most significantly in the high-angle group (mean = 1.98, SD = 2.14, p = 0.0001), and B/Si thickness decreased most significantly after surgery (mean = 2.16, SD = 2.68, p = 0.016). The findings suggest that the high-angle group had a higher chance of undergoing genioplasty to enhance chin contour. Different OGS plans should be considered for different Class III vertical facial types.

Abstract
Impacted teeth are those that fail to erupt at the typical age of eruption and remain enclosed in the maxilla or mandible, partially or completely surrounded by bone or soft tissues. Among these, third molars experience the highest incidence of impaction, with maxillary canines and mandibular bicuspids following closely. A 23-year-old female presented to the orthodontics department, expressing concerns about spacing issues in her upper and lower front teeth. During the orthodontic planning process and radiological assessment, two impacted teeth, specifically one primary molar and one permanent premolar, were identified in close proximity to the mental nerve. Both teeth were subsequently extracted with success. This case report underscores the importance of a thorough preoperative radiographic evaluation of the mandibular canal and foramina. Additionally, it stresses the necessity for dissection to prevent unintended injury to the mental nerve during the extraction of the impacted mandibular premolar, which can result in paresthesia affecting the lower lip, mandibular labial gingiva, and chin.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the differences of the nasal soft and hard tissue asymmetry in postoperative patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) between adolescence and adulthood, and to explore the correlation of nasal soft and hard tissue asymmetry. METHODS CT data from 47 repaired UCLP patients were included and divided into two groups:1. adolescent group: 23 patients (15 males, 8 females; age: 10-12 years old). 2. adult group: 24 patients (16 males, 8 females; age:18-32 years old). The three-dimensional asymmetry in nasal soft and hard tissues was analyzed. Additionally, the correlation between nasal soft and hard tissue asymmetry was also analyzed. RESULTS Both the adolescent group and adult group showed asymmetries in nasal soft and hard tissues. Compared to the adolescent group, the adult group had a significantly increased horizontal asymmetry of nasal soft tissues Sbal (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the sagittal asymmetry of soft tissue Glat (P < 0.05), Sbal (P < 0.001), Sni (P < 0.001) and hard tissue LPA (P < 0.05) also increased significantly. In the adult group, there were more landmarks with a correlation between the asymmetry of nasal hard tissue and soft tissue compared to the adolescent group. There were moderate to strong correlations between nasal hard and soft tissue symmetries in the horizontal and sagittal directions (0.444 < r < 764), but no correlation in the vertical direction in the adult group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The asymmetry of nasal soft and hard tissues in patients with repaired UCLP becomes more apparent in the horizontal and sagittal dimensions from adolescence to adulthood. The correlation between the asymmetry of nasal hard tissue and soft tissue becomes stronger in the horizontal and sagittal dimensions. These factors should be taken into account when performing treatment for repaired UCLP patients in adolescence and adulthood.

Abstract
Aim In this, in vitro study's objective is to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal and ceramic orthodontic brackets that have been adhered to enamel using a conventional acid etch/primer and self-etching primer (SEP) adhesive method. Materials and Methods One hundred excised human premolars were bonded on brackets and were divided into group 1 -Metal brackets were bonded on teeth and group 2 -Ceramic brackets were bonded on teeth. These two groups were further subdivided: subgroup 1a - 25 metal brackets bonded using conventional acid etch/primer adhesive system, subgroup 1b - 25 metal brackets bonded using SEP, subgroup 2a - 25 ceramic brackets bonded using conventional acid etch/primer adhesive system, and subgroup 2b - 25 ceramic brackets bonded using SEP; brackets were debonded using a computerized Instron universal testing machine. Results The mean value of SBS of metal and ceramic brackets bonded using conventional acid etch/primer adhesive systems had higher SBS than those bonded using SEP. SBS ranged from 7.95 to 12.24 MPa which was in the acceptable clinical range. Conclusion SBS values of all four subgroups exceeded the range of 6-8 MPa observed to be acceptable for routine clinical use.

Abstract
The primary objective of this in vitro study was to investigate the erosive potential of enamel under the use of clear aligners (CA), by simulating in vivo conditions experienced by patients who do not remove their CA during the consumption of acidic beverages. In addition, the difference in erosion protection conferred by artificial and human saliva was also evaluated. Sound-extracted human premolars (n = 20) had half of their surfaces protected with acid-resistant nail polish and were randomly distributed into two experimental groups (n = 10): teeth immersed in human saliva or artificial saliva. All teeth had half of their lingual surfaces enclosed by a CA device. The erosive challenges consisted of individual immersion of each sample in citrus acid three times a day, intermediated by immersion in human saliva or artificial saliva for 2 h, during ten days of the erosive protocol. The enamel mineral content was analyzed by high-resolution microtomography. The differential mineral concentration profiles were obtained by subtracting the profile of the mineral concentration of the exposed area and enamel under the CA area from the respective sound area (control). In addition, enamel wear and enamel volume loss were measured. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also performed to analyze the enamel surface. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls test. The enamel wear was higher in teeth immersed in artificial saliva, when compared to human saliva (p < 0.001). The volume loss of the exposed enamel area was lower for tooth immersed in human saliva than in artificial saliva (p < 0.001), during the acid challenge protocol. The use of CA during acid challenges promoted wear and mineral loss of dental enamel, being these changes more pronounced on the enamel surface under the CA. These results open a new path for the development of further studies adopting clinical protocols that promote more accurate responses in the clinical practice during orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Magnetron sputtering was evaluated to equip surfaces of orthodontic elastomeric ligatures with silver and bismuth nanofilms. MATERIAL AND METHODS Antibacterial properties were evaluated by the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans. Polyurethane-based elastomeric ligatures were coated with silver and bismuth nanofilms via direct current magnetron sputtering. Surface roughness (Ra ) and surface-free energy (SFE) were assessed. Coated specimens were incubated with S. mutans for 2 h. Adhering bacteria were visualized by Hoechst staining and quantified by an ATP-based luminescence assay. One-way analysis of variance with Tukey post hoc testing and Pearson correlation analysis were performed (p < .05) to relate bacterial adhesion to surface roughness and surface-free energy. RESULTS Elastomeric ligatures were successfully coated with silver and bismuth nanofilms. Ra was significantly reduced by silver coating. Silver and bismuth coatings showed significantly higher SFE than controls. Adhesion of S. mutans was significantly decreased by silver coating. No correlation between bacterial adhesion and SFE was found. Correlation between bacterial adhesion and Ra was positive but not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Magnetron sputtering proved to be a feasible method to equip orthodontic elastomeric ligatures with silver and bismuth nanofilms. Silver coatings of elastomeric ligatures may reduce white spots and carious lesions in orthodontic patients. Future research is required to stabilize coatings.

Abstract
Cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is a prevalent congenital craniofacial abnormality that can lead to difficulties in eating, speaking, hearing, and psychological distress. The traditional approach for treating CLP involves bone graft surgery, which has limitations, post-surgical complications, and donor site morbidity. However, regenerative medicine has emerged as a promising alternative, employing a combination of stem cells, growth factors, and scaffolds to promote tissue regeneration. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of stem cell-based regenerative approaches in the management of CLP. A thorough search was conducted in the Medline/PubMed and Scopus databases, including cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, case series, case controls, case reports, and animal studies. The identified studies were categorized into two main groups: clinical studies involving human subjects and in vivo studies using animal models. While there are only a limited number of studies investigating the combined use of stem cells and scaffolds for CLP treatment, they have shown promising results. Various types of stem cells have been utilized in conjunction with scaffolds. Importantly, regenerative methods have been successfully applied to patients across a broad range of age groups. The collective findings derived from the reviewed studies consistently support the notion that regenerative medicine holds potential advantages over conventional bone grafting and represents a promising therapeutic option for CLP. However, future well-designed clinical trials, encompassing diverse combinations of stem cells and scaffolds, are warranted to establish the clinical efficacy of these interventions with a larger number of patients.

Abstract
Orthodontists have a variety of options available for retainers. Research in Orthodontics focuses on assessing outcomes important to clinicians; however, there is inconsistency in how these outcomes are selected and evaluated. This review sought to assess the effects of different orthodontic retainers on patients' quality of life (QoL). Various approaches were employed in this systematic review, and a thorough search was conducted across six databases. The review involved a comprehensive evaluation of six included studies, highlighting changes in dental structure post-treatment, emphasizing the role of extraction procedures and the quality of debonding in improving retention. The study identified key outcomes for orthodontic clinical trials, highlighting orthodontists' preferences for specific retainer types. Moreover, it discussed the impact of sociocultural influences on retention care. Involving patients actively in discussions about whether to end or extend the retention phase was deemed essential. Noteworthy improvements in occlusal outcomes were linked to extraction treatments. Gender and malocclusion severity influenced QoL before and after orthodontic treatment. The degree of improvement observed in the Class III malocclusion group was comparatively lower than that in the Class I and Class II groups. Orthodontic treatment was found to yield favorable psychological outcomes, as evidenced by notable enhancements in self-esteem and social engagement among individuals. Fixed appliances were shown to negatively affect oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), particularly for those with aesthetic and functional concerns. A consensus has been reached on the essential themes and outcomes that should be incorporated in clinical trials related to orthodontic retention for non-cleft and non-surgical cases.

Abstract
Objectives This laboratory-based study aimed to evaluate and compare the accuracy and retention of moulding plates when used as pre-surgical orthopaedic appliances (PSIOs) for infants with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P). Methods Ten moulding plates were fabricated from three different materials (total sample size: 30), including polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a hard clear aligner (PET-G polymer), and a dual-layered hard and soft clear aligner (mixed PET-G/EVA) on ten three-dimensional (3D) printed working models. Accuracy was evaluated by measuring the virtual gap between the data acquired from the moulding plate and the working model after the optical scanning at each of the designated 36 points for each plate. Exocad software was used to facilitate all virtual alignments and measurements. Retention was measured using a digital gauge that quantified the traction force required to separate the plates from the retention test cast (a soft resin printed cast). Results PET-G plates exhibited the best fit with the working cast, with overall adaptations of 0.146 ± 0.012 for PET-G, 0.250 ± 0.073 for PET-G/EVA, and 0.294 ± 0.113 for PMMA. For region-specific misfit, PET-G plates exhibited superior accuracy across all regions, with mean discrepancies of 0.16 ± 0.08 mm, 0.15 ± 0.061 mm, and 0.12 ± 0.128 mm in the anterior, middle, and posterior regions, respectively. Retention for PET-G was significantly higher than the other materials, with a mean of 3.34 N ± 0.487, as opposed to 1.65 N ± 0.331for PMMA and 1.27 N ± 0.239 for PET-G/EVA (P < 0.05). Conclusions Moulding plates constructed from PET-G exhibited a better fit and higher retention than those made from PET-G/EVA and PMMA. Clinical significance Collectively, our findings suggest that the selection of PET-G for PSIO appliances could have clinical significance by potentially improving treatment outcomes in infants with CL/P.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present research was to assess the mesiodistal angulation of the maxillary anterior teeth utilizing Image J computer software, a Profile projector, and a Custom-made jig. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 34 subjects (17 males and 17 females) were chosen from a group of 18-30 years old with bilateral Angle Class I molars and canine relationships. One manual approach (Custom-made jig) and two digital methods (J computer software, a Profile projector) were used to record the mesiodistal angulation in incisal view. The individuals had alginate impressions made, and a facebow was used to capture the maxilla's spatial relationship with the cranium. The articulated cast with the help of mounting ring moved to the specially customized jig, then the angulations was measured in the incisal view after the casts were placed in a semi-adjustable articulator. Data were recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS The mesiodistal angulation in the incisal view via three methods between the 17 males and 17 females has statistically significant different. Although the mesiodistal angulation for maxillary lateral incisor and canine did not show any statistically significant difference, the maximum and minimum values obtained were always greater in males in comparison with the females. This indicates that the positions of six maxillary anterior teeth in the males resulted in the creation of upward sweep of incisal edges of central and lateral incisors which was also referred to as "smiling line" producing masculine surface anatomy more squared and vigorous while feminine surface anatomy being more rounded, soft, and pleasant. There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left sides, indicating bilateral arch symmetry and the symmetrical place of the right teeth compared with the left side's corresponding teeth. CONCLUSION On conclusion, according to the current study's findings, all three approaches can measure the mesiodistal angulations of maxillary anterior teeth in incisal view with clinically acceptable accuracy. The digital methods, which included using the Image J computer software and the profile projector, achieved more accurate results than the manual method. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The outcomes of this study's mesiodistal angulations can be used as a reference for placing teeth in both fully and partially edentulous conditions. This study contributes to a better understanding of the importance of achieving the ideal occlusion in the Indian population by placing the maxillary anterior teeth at the proper mesiodistal angulation. Abstract
Malocclusion is the mal-relationship of dental arches with or without an irregularity of the teeth. Therefore, it is of interest to estimate the rate of occurrence of malocclusion within the population of Agartala city, Tripura, India. The study included 850 individuals ranging from 16 to 24 years of age, which were categorized into five distinct classifications, namely normal occlusion, Angle's Class I malocclusion, Class II Division 1, Class II Division 2, and Class III malocclusion. Data shows that normal occlusal alignment was observed in 29.41% of the participants, whereas a majority of 70.59% exhibited various forms of malocclusion among this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate dentist perceptions of attractive smiles in the Pakistani population, considering different dental proportions. METHODS Maxillary casts and digital images were used to create symmetrical representations of anterior teeth. dentists' preferences for good and bad teeth proportions, width/height ratios, and various dental proportions (golden, recurring esthetic dental (RED), golden percentage, Preston, and local/observed) were assessed using one sample and paired t-test. The Chi-square test was used to determine the gender disparities and factors affecting smile attractiveness. A p-value of ≤ 0.05 was taken as significant. RESULTS The RED proportion emerged as the preferred choice for normal-sized teeth, with specialists and general dentists favoring it over the golden proportion. For tall teeth, the golden proportion was predominantly preferred. The golden percentage received limited preference for aesthetic smile construction. CONCLUSIONS The smiles created using the principles of RED proportion were opted as the most attractive by local dentists. Factors such as tooth arrangement, color, and midline were highlighted as essential considerations in aesthetic smile construction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fulfilling aesthetic norms is an imperative of modern society. Accordingly, aesthetics has found its important role in dental medicine. The aim was to study whether there is a difference in the perception of tooth shade change and anatomical variations of anterior maxillary teeth among dental students depending on the level of education, gender, and experience in assisting in a dental office. METHODS The research was conducted among dental students via the Google Forms platform. Students evaluated the aesthetic acceptability of a smile on the unaltered, reference photograph (RP) and on the other 28 photographs in which the tooth shade (lighter and darker teeth), length (shortened central incisors, elongated, and beveled lateral incisors, elongated canines) and position (atypical and typical rotations and diastemas) of the upper maxillary teeth were altered by digital manipulation. The 1-10 assessment scale was used. Statistical analysis comprised one-way Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, X2 tests, t-test, and 3-way MANOVA. RESULTS In the research 208 students participated, 113 were preclinical students, 104 assisted in dental office and 175 were females. There were no significant effects of gender regarding length and position modifications (p > .05), while women were stricter in evaluation of lighter shade (p < .05). Clinical students were stricter in evaluating all manipulated photographs (MP) except those towards darker shade modifications, while assisting in a dental office or having a dentist in close family showed no significant effects (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS With a higher level of targeted academic education, dental students sharpen their ability to notice deviations from the aesthetic norms of a smile.

Abstract
Background: To evaluate the current evidence on clear aligners and root resorption using 3D and/or combined 2D and 3D methods from available systematic reviews and meta-analyses and to determine the relationship between root resorption and clear aligners using the AMSTAR 2 tool. Methods: A comprehensive literature search of systematic reviews investigating aligners and root resorption, published up until 31 December 2022, was conducted. The following electronic databases were searched: MEDLINE via PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scopus, LIVIVO, and LILACS. There were no language restrictions. The inclusion criteria were restricted to studies focusing on root resorption utilizing either 3D methods exclusively or a combination of 2D and 3D techniques. Data were screened and analyzed for quality using the "A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR 2)" tool. Data extraction was conducted independently by two authors. The gathered information was categorized and synthesized narratively based on the primary findings elucidated within the reviews. Results: Out of a total of 1221 potentially eligible studies initially identified, 4 systematic reviews met the inclusion criteria following the exclusion of irrelevant studies. Among these, two systematic reviews (50%) were classified as low-quality, while the remaining two (50%) were deemed to be of critically low quality. Conclusions: Based on the findings of four systematic reviews, the root resorption rate was lower with the use of clear aligners than with fixed aligners. It is advisable to approach the interpretation of this conclusion with caution, as the quality of the available evidence is assessed to be very low. Higher quality systematic reviews are needed to substantiate this conclusion.

Abstract
Polishing after the removal of brackets is the final step in orthodontic treatment. It is simple to perform, though some studies have reported that polishing causes damage to the enamel surface. An in vitro study was made of the influence of the buccal surface convexity of the tooth upon possible enamel loss when the remaining resin and adhesive are removed after bracket decementing using two different polishing modes: a tungsten carbide bur at low and high speeds. The convexity of the buccal surface was quantified in 30 incisors and 30 premolars. A stereoscopic microscope was used to obtain photographs of the profile of the crown, and Image J software was used to calculate convexity by dividing the length of a line from the cementoenamel junction to the incisal margin by another line from the mentioned junction to the maximum convexity of the buccal surface. Brackets were cemented on all the teeth and were decemented 24 h later. In both groups, the residual composite was removed with a tungsten carbide bur at a low speed in one-half of the teeth and at a high speed in the other half. The buccal surface of each tooth was then photographed again, and the convexity was calculated and compared against the baseline value. The difference between the two values were taken to represent the enamel loss. The convexity of the premolars was significantly greater than that of the incisors, but this did not result in greater enamel loss when the same polishing mode was used. However, the tungsten carbide bur at a high speed proved more aggressive, causing significantly greater enamel loss than when used at a low speed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND At low concentrations used for in-office bleaching gels, such as 6% HP, gingival barrier continues to be performed. If we take into account that, in the at-home bleaching technique, no barrier is indicated, it seems that the use of a gingival barrier fails to make much sense when bleaching gel in low concentration is used for in-office bleaching. OBJECTIVE This double-blind, split-mouth, randomized clinical trial evaluated the gingival irritation (GI) of in-office bleaching using 6% hydrogen peroxide (HP) with and without a gingival barrier in adolescents, as well as color change and the impact of oral condition on quality of life. METHODOLOGY Overall, 60 participants were randomized into which side would or would not receive the gingival barrier. In-office bleaching was performed for 50 minutes with 6% HP in three sessions. The absolute risk and intensity of GI were assessed with a visual analogue scale. Color change was assessed using a digital spectrophotometer and color guides. The impact of oral condition on quality of life was assessed using the Brazilian version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (α=0.05). RESULTS The proportion of patients who presented GI for the "with barrier" group was 31.6% and for the "without barrier" group, 30% (p=1.0). There is an equivalence for the evaluated groups regarding GI intensity (p<0.01). Color change was detected with no statistical differences (p>0.29). There was a significant impact of oral condition on quality of life after bleaching (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The use or not of the gingival barrier for in-office bleaching with 6% HP was equivalent for GI, as well as for bleaching efficacy, with improvement in the impact of oral condition on quality of life.
