Abstract
Introduction The world pandemic of the virus SARS-CoV-2 , which causes COVID-19 infection was announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020. Due to the restrictions that were introduced in order to minimize the spread of the virus, people more often suffer from stress, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. The aim of this study was evaluation of the stress levels and sleep disorders among nursing students during the pandemic SARS-CoV-2 . Materials and Study Methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted among 397 nursing students on March 2020. The research tools used were original questionnaires, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS10), and the Athenian Insomnia Scale (AIS), as well as Coping with Stress Inventory (MiniCOPE). Results Respondents felt a high level of stress, which occurred in 68.8% of interviewees regarding whether there was a danger of contracting COVID-19. Respondents experienced 84% stress levels when a family member suffered from COVID-19. Sleep disorders were determined mainly by the fear of infection and contact with someone who might be infected with the virus. Nursing students who felt a high level of stress often suffered from sleep disorders (70.2%) more frequently than students who felt a low or average stress level (30.4%). The respondents decided to cope with stress by denial, taking psychoactive substances, ceasing action, or blaming themselves. The greater the intensity of stress experienced by students, the more often they undertook avoidance behaviors or showed helplessness. Conclusion During the pandemic, students experienced severe stress, which resulted in sleep disorders and avoidance behaviors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep disturbance is a common problem among the elderly and is associated with physical and mental health. Exercise has been reported as an alternative therapeutic strategy for people with sleep disturbances. However, this topic has not been systematically reviewed for older adults. This study was conducted to provide a protocol to systematically evaluate the effects of exercise on sleep quality in the elderly. METHODS AND ANALYSIS An electronic search of the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases will be performed with no language restrictions, and data extraction will be performed by two independent reviewers. The reviewers will discuss and resolve any differences, and a third reviewer will be consulted in cases of uncertainty. Randomised controlled trials will be selected. The primary outcome will be an objective measurement of sleep quality (eg, polysomnography). The secondary outcomes will be self-reported sleep quality (using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scale), and adverse events (such as falls and fractures). RevMan V.5.3.5 and Stata V.16.0 software will be used for meta-analysis. If the heterogeneity tests show slight or no statistical heterogeneity, the fixed effects model will be used; in other cases, the random effect model will be used for data synthesis. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The protocol does not require ethical approval. The findings will be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and journals. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42021287980.

Abstract
To date, there is no scientific consensus on whether insomnia symptoms increase mortality risk. We investigated longitudinal associations between time-varying insomnia symptoms (difficulty initiating sleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, early-morning awakening, and nonrestorative sleep) and all-cause mortality among middle-aged and older adults during 14 years of follow-up. Data were obtained from 2004 through 2018 survey waves of the Health and Retirement Study in the United States for a population-representative sample of 15 511 respondents who were ≥50 years old in 2004. Respondents were interviewed biennially and followed through the end of the 2018 survey wave for the outcome. Marginal structural discrete-time survival analyses were employed to account for time-varying confounding and selection bias. Of the 15 511 cohort respondents (mean [±SD] age at baseline, 63.7 [±10.2] years; 56.0% females), 5878 (31.9%) died during follow-up. At baseline (2004), 41.6% reported experiencing at least one insomnia symptom. Respondents who experienced one (HR = 1.11; 95% CI: 1.03-1.20), two (HR = 1.12; 95% CI: 1.01-1.23), three (HR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.05-1.27), or four (HR = 1.32; 95% CI: 1.12-1.56) insomnia symptoms had on average a higher hazard of all-cause mortality, compared to those who were symptom-free. For each insomnia symptom, respondents who experienced difficulty initiating sleep (HR = 1.12; 95% CI: 1.02-1.22), early-morning awakening (HR = 1.09; 95% CI: 1.01-1.18), and nonrestorative sleep (HR = 1.17; 95% CI: 1.09-1.26), had a higher hazard of all-cause mortality compared to those not experiencing the symptom. The findings demonstrate significant associations between insomnia symptoms and all-cause mortality, both on a cumulative scale and independently, except for difficulty maintaining sleep. Further research should investigate the underlying mechanisms linking insomnia symptoms and mortality.

Abstract
Neurological disorders related to neuroinfections are highly prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), constituting a major cause of disability and economic burden for patients and society. These include epilepsy, dementia, motor neuron diseases, headache disorders, sleep disorders, and peripheral neuropathy. The highest prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is in SSA. Consequently, there is a high prevalence of neurological disorders associated with HIV infection such as HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders, motor disorders, chronic headaches, and peripheral neuropathy in the region. The pathogenesis of these neurological disorders involves the direct role of the virus, some antiretroviral treatments, and the dysregulated immune system. Furthermore, the high prevalence of epilepsy in SSA (mainly due to perinatal causes) is exacerbated by infections such as toxoplasmosis, neurocysticercosis, onchocerciasis, malaria, bacterial meningitis, tuberculosis, and the immune reactions they elicit. Sleep disorders are another common problem in the region and have been associated with infectious diseases such as human African trypanosomiasis and HIV and involve the activation of the immune system. While most headache disorders are due to benign primary headaches, some secondary headaches are caused by infections (meningitis, encephalitis, brain abscess). HIV and neurosyphilis, both common in SSA, can trigger long-standing immune activation in the central nervous system (CNS) potentially resulting in dementia. Despite the progress achieved in preventing diseases from the poliovirus and retroviruses, these microbes may cause motor neuron diseases in SSA. The immune mechanisms involved in these neurological disorders include increased cytokine levels, immune cells infiltration into the CNS, and autoantibodies. This review focuses on the major neurological disorders relevant to Africa and neuroinfections highly prevalent in SSA, describes the interplay between neuroinfections, immune system, neuroinflammation, and neurological disorders, and how understanding this can be exploited for the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics for improved patient care.

Abstract
PURPOSE The prevalence of poor sleep quality in patients with diabetes was higher than the general population. This study aimed to explore risk factors for not only poor sleep quality, but also long sleep latency, short sleep duration and low sleep efficiency, in type 2 diabetes patients (T2DM) with comorbid metabolic syndrome (MS). PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 281 patients aged 18-75 years were enrolled from Ningbo First Hospital during October 2021 to March 2022. Sleep quality was evaluated by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Sleep latency, sleep duration and sleep efficiency were obtained by a response to the questionnaire. Descriptive, independent two-sample t-test, Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were conducted using SPSS Version 28. RESULTS The prevalence of poor sleep quality in T2DM with comorbid MS patients was 59.10%. The factors significantly associated with poor sleep quality were depression symptoms (OR = 3.10, 95% CI: 1.38 to 6.96, P = 0.006), poor quality of life (OR = 2.49, 95% CI: 1.24 to 4.99, P = 0.010), and age (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.04 to 1.10, P < 0.001). The factor significantly associated with long sleep latency was depression symptoms (OR = 2.19, 95% CI: 1.15 to 4.16, P = 0.017). The factors significantly related to short sleep duration were depression symptoms (OR = 2.56, 95% CI: 1.31 to 5.00, P = 0.006) and age (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.08, P = 0.002). The factor significantly related to short sleep efficiency was age (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.06, P = 0.019). CONCLUSION This study found that depression symptoms, together with poor quality of life, and increasing age were associated with poor sleep quality. Symptoms of depression were related to long sleep latency and short sleep duration. The increasing age was associated with short sleep duration and low sleep efficiency.

Abstract
Dry eye is a disease that severely affects patients' quality of life, increasing the global burden on public health and finance. There is growing evidence that a poor lifestyle is a significant risk factor for dry eye. Along with the development of society, sleep, as a way of life, is also constantly changing. The main manifestations of sleep disorders are reduced sleep time, circadian rhythm disturbances, and sleep breathing disturbances. Sleep disorders and their secondary systemic diseases have attracted wide attention in recent years. This review mainly explored the correlation between sleep disorders and dry eye, and found that sleep-related problems and other factors potentially leading from sleep disorders could be critical factors for dry eye. These results suggest that ophthalmologists should pay attention to the sleep health problems in patients with dry eye, and we hope that this paper can provide help for future research in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychiatric nurses often face abuse, attacks, escape, suicides, and other situations related to the care of patients with mental disorders, which are more likely to induce psychological distress. AIMS This study aimed to examine the relationship between coping styles and psychological distress among Chinese psychiatric nurses in Shandong and the significance of sleep quality as a mediating factor. METHODS A total of 812 psychiatric nurses in Shandong, China, were investigated using the Psychological Distress Scale (K10), Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and self-compiled general information questionnaire. RESULTS Psychological distress was detected in 571 psychiatric nurses (70.3%). The psychological distress of psychiatric nurses was significantly different with respect to professional title (χ2 = 10.627, P < 0.05) and shift work (χ2 = 9.120, P < 0.01). Psychological distress positively correlated with negative coping style (r = 0.266, P < 0.01) and sleep quality (PSQIT) (r = 0.532, P < 0.01). A significant positive correlation was found between psychological distress and all dimensions of sleep quality (r = 0.158-0.456, P < 0.05). Professional title, positive coping style, negative coping style, sleep quality (PSQIT), subjective sleep quality, sleep disorder and daytime dysfunction predicted psychological distress in psychiatric nurses (R 2 = 0.363, F = 65.343, P < 0.01). The relationship between negative coping style and psychological distress was partially mediated by sleep quality, with the mediating effect accounting for 37.97% of the total effect. CONCLUSIONS Psychiatric nurses have a high rate of psychological distress, which is closely related to coping styles, and sleep quality has a certain regulatory effect.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are among the main comorbidities in patients with a Disorder of Consciousness (DOC). Given the key role of sleep in neural and cognitive functioning, detecting and treating sleep disorders in DOCs might be an effective therapeutic strategy to boost consciousness recovery and levels of awareness. To date, no systematic reviews have been conducted that explore the effect of sleep treatments in DOCs; thus, we systematically reviewed the existing studies on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for sleep disorders in DOCs. Among 2267 assessed articles, only 7 were included in the systematic review. The studies focused on two sleep disorder categories (sleep-related breathing disorders and circadian rhythm dysregulation) treated with both pharmacological (Modafinil and Intrathecal Baclofen) and non-pharmacological (positive airway pressure, bright light stimulation, and central thalamic deep brain stimulation) interventions. Although the limited number of studies and their heterogeneity do not allow generalized conclusions, all the studies highlighted the effectiveness of treatments on both sleep disorders and levels of awareness. For this reason, clinical and diagnostic evaluations able to detect sleep disorders in DOC patients should be adopted in the clinical routine for the purpose of intervening promptly with the most appropriate treatment.

Abstract
Police officers experience exposures associated with increased inflammation, such as the stress associated with shiftwork and poor-quality diet, both of which have been shown to affect sleep duration and quality. This study examined the longitudinal and cross-sectional effects of the Energy-density Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII™) on objectively and subjectively measured sleep among police officers. Data were derived from the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress Cohort (n = 464 at baseline), with longitudinal data collected from 2004 to 2019. A food frequency questionnaire obtained estimated dietary intake from which E-DII scores were calculated. Dependent variables were objectively (Micro Motion Logger Sleep Watch™) and subjectively (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) measured sleep quality and quantity. The analyses included a series of linear mixed-effects models used to examine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the E-DII and sleep quantity and quality. Cross-sectionally, more pro-inflammatory diets were associated with higher wake-after-sleep-onset but improved subjective sleep quality. In models accounting for both longitudinal and cross-sectional effects, for every 1-unit increase in the E-DII scores over time (representing a pro-inflammatory change), wake-after-sleep-onset increased by nearly 1.4 min (p = 0.07). This result was driven by officers who primarily worked day shifts (β = 3.33, p = 0.01). Conversely, for every 1-unit increase in E-DII score, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score improved. More pro-inflammatory diets were associated with increased wake-after-sleep-onset, an objective measure of sleep quality. Intervention studies to reduce dietary inflammatory potential may provide greater magnitude of effect for changes in sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Objective biomarkers are crucial for overcoming the clinical dilemma in major depressive disorder (MDD), and the individualized diagnosis is essential to facilitate the precise medicine for MDD. METHODS Sleep disturbance-related magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features was identified in the internal dataset (92 MDD patients) using the relevance vector regression algorithm, which was further verified in 460 MDD patients of an independent, multicenter dataset. Subsequently, using these MRI features, the eXtreme Gradient Boosting classification model was constructed in the current multicenter dataset (460 MDD patients and 470 normal controls). Meanwhile, the association between classification outputs and the severity of depressive symptoms was also investigated. RESULTS In MDD patients, the combination of gray matter density and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation can accurately predict individual sleep disturbance score that was calculated by the sum of item 4 score, item 5 score, and item 6 score of the 17-Item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) (R2 = 0.158 in the internal dataset; R2 = 0.110 in multicenter dataset). Furthermore, the classification model based on these MRI features distinguished MDD patients from normal controls with 86.3% accuracy (area under the curve = 0.937). Importantly, the classification outputs significantly correlated with HAMD-17 scores in MDD patients. LIMITATION Lacking some specialized tools to assess the personal sleep quality, e.g. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. CONCLUSION Neuroimaging features can reflect accurately individual sleep disturbance manifestation and serve as potential diagnostic biomarkers of MDD.

Abstract
Crocus sativus Linn. (Saffron) is valued worldwide for its potential use in the management of various degenerative disorders, including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), diabetes, cancer, metabolic syndrome (MetS), neurodegenerative diseases, immune disorders, and sexual dysfunction. Previous reports, based on clinical trials, suggest that crocetin, crocin, picrocrocin, and safranal are the main bioactive components of saffron with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects. In this comprehensive narrative review, we studied the recent clinical trials, investigating the medicinal applications of saffron and/or its components. The present results can provide important insights into the potential of saffron in preventing and treating different disorders, with a special focus on the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms. However, further high-quality studies are needed to firmly establish the clinical efficacy of saffron in treating some degenerative diseases.

Abstract
Background: Sleep occupies one-third of human life and is essential for health and for emotional, physical, and cognitive well-being. Poor or insufficient sleep is associated with a wide range of dysfunctions that involve different body systems, such as the endocrine, metabolic, and immune systems, thus compromising the higher cortical functions, cognitive performance, mood, and post-physical activity recovery. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the effectiveness of physical therapy exercises on sleep disorders in patients with neurological disorders. Our systematic review identified 10 articles that investigated the effects of physical therapy on sleep disorders in patients with neurological disorders, 6 of which were included in the meta-analysis. Results suggest that physical therapy exercises are a safe and useful strategy for managing sleep disorders in neurorehabilitation.

Abstract
Sleep disruptions are frequently reported by persons with mood, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorders, and co-occur with psychiatric disorders. There is evidence that sleep disorders can predict the likelihood of developing a future psychiatric disorder and exacerbate existing symptoms. Understanding the inter-relationships between sleep and psychiatric disorders is important. The primary goals of this article are to describe the interactions between psychiatric and sleep disorders in the context of sleep disturbances, underscore the bidirectional effects of mental health treatments on sleep disorder outcomes, and provide general recommendations to optimize treatment in the context of sleep disturbances.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are common among the general population and can generate health problems such as insomnia and anxiety. In addition to standard drugs and psychological interventions, there are different complementary plant-based therapies used to treat insomnia and anxiety. This review aimed to find and examine the most recent research on the use of herbal medicines for treating anxiety and insomnia as compiled from clinical trials, as well as to assess the safety and efficacy of these medicines and to elucidate their possible mechanisms of action. The process entailed a search of PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library databases from 2010 to 2020. The search terms included "sleep disorder", "insomnia", "sedative", "hypnotic", "anxiety", "anxiolytic", and "clinical trial", combined with the search terms "herbs" and "medicinal plants", in addition to individual herbal medicines by both their common and scientific names. This updated review, which focuses mainly on clinical trials, includes research on 23 medicinal plants and their combinations. Essential oils and their associations have also been reviewed. The efficacy of medicinal plants depends on treatment duration, types of study subjects, administration route, and treatment method. More clinical trials with an adequate, standardized design are necessary, as are more preclinical studies to continue studying the mechanisms of action. As a result of our work, we can conclude that the 3 plants with the most potential are valerian, passionflower, and ashwagandha, with the combination of valerian with hops and passionflower giving the best results in the clinical tests.

Abstract
Ganoderma lucidum is a medicinal mushroom used in traditional Chinese medicine with putative tranquilizing effects. However, the component of G. lucidum that promotes sleep has not been clearly identified. Here, the effect and mechanism of the acidic part of the alcohol extract of G. lucidum mycelia (GLAA) on sleep were studied in mice. Administration of 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg GLAA for 28 days promoted sleep in pentobarbital-treated mice by shortening sleep latency and prolonging sleeping time. GLAA administration increased the levels of the sleep-promoting neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine and the Tph2, Iptr3 and Gng13 transcripts in the sleep-regulating serotonergic synapse pathway in the hypothalamus during this process. Moreover, GLAA administration reduced lipopolysaccharide and raised peptidoglycan levels in serum. GLAA-enriched gut bacteria and metabolites, including Bifidobacterium, Bifidobacterium animalis, indole-3-carboxylic acid and acetylphosphate were negatively correlated with sleep latency and positively correlated with sleeping time and the hypothalamus 5-hydroxytryptamine concentration. Both the GLAA sleep promotion effect and the altered faecal metabolites correlated with sleep behaviours disappeared after gut microbiota depletion with antibiotics. Our results showed that GLAA promotes sleep through a gut microbiota-dependent and serotonin-associated pathway in mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the association of sleep disorder diagnosis among sepsis survivors with 5-year all-cause mortality. METHODS Using the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database of South Korea, we included adult sepsis survivors who were primarily diagnosed with sepsis between 2011 and 2014 and survived for more than one year after diagnosis. The diagnosis of sleep disorders was evaluated using the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision codes of G47* in the NHIS database. RESULTS In total, 45,826 survivors of sepsis were included in this analysis. Among the sepsis survivors, 2935 (6.4%) were newly diagnosed with a sleep disorder within 1 year after the date of sepsis diagnosis, while 7938 (17.3%) were already diagnosed with sleep disorder before the date of sepsis diagnosis. In the multivariable Cox regression, the risk of 5-year all-cause mortality in the pre- and post-sepsis sleep disorder groups was 1.19-fold (hazard ratio: 1.19, 95% confidence interval: 1.14-1.24; P<0.001) and 1.79-fold (hazard ratio: 1.79, 95% confidence interval: 1.70-1.89; P<0.001) higher than that of the control group. CONCLUSION A 6.4% of sepsis survivors in South Korea were newly diagnosed with a sleep disorder within 1 year of sepsis diagnosis. Although both pre- and post-sepsis sleep disorders were associated with a higher 5-year all-cause mortality rate, the risk of the 5-year all-cause mortality in the post-sepsis sleep disorder group was higher than that in the pre-sepsis sleep disorder group.

Abstract
Objective.When recording a subject in an at-home environment for sleep evaluation or for other breathing disorder diagnoses using non-contact microphones, the breathing recordings (audio signals) can be distorted by sounds such as TV, outside noise, or air-conditioners. If two people are sleeping together, both may produce breathing/snoring sounds that need to be separated. In this study, we present signal processing and source separation algorithms for the enhancement of individual breathing/snoring audio signals in a simulated environment.Approach.We developed a computer simulation of mixed signals derived from genuine nocturnal recordings of 110 subjects. Two main source separation approaches were tested: (1) changing the basis vectors for the mixtures in the time domain (principal and independent component analysis, PCA/ICA) and (2) converting the mixtures to their time-frequency representations (degenerate un-mixing estimation technique, DUET). In addition to these source separation techniques, a beamforming approach was tested.Main results.The separation results with a reverberation time of 0.15 s and zero SNR between signals showed good performance (mean source to interference ratio (SIR): DUET = 12.831 dB, ICA = 3.388 dB, PCA = 4.452 dB), and for beamforming (SIR = -0.304 dB). To evaluate our source separation results, we propose two new measures: an evaluation measure based on a spectral similarity score (mel-SID) between the target source and its estimation (after separation) and a breathing energy ratio measure (BER). The results with the new proposed measures yielded comparable conclusions (mel-SID: DUET = 1.320, ICA = 2.732, PCA = 1.927, and beamforming = 2.590, BER: DUET = 10.241 dB, ICA = 0.270 dB, PCA = -2.847 dB, and beamforming = -1.151 dB), but better differentiated the differences between the performance of the algorithms. The DUET is superior on all measures. Its main advantage is that it only uses two microphones for separation.Significance. The separated audio signal can thus contribute to a more informed diagnosis of sleep-related and non-sleep-related diseases. The Institutional Review Committee of Soroka University Medical Center approved this study protocol (protocol number 10141) and all methods were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations.

Abstract
Children with intellectual disabilities are more likely to experience sleep disorders of insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep breathing disorders than typically developing children. The present study examined risk factors for these sleep disorders in 447 children (aged 5-18 years), diagnosed with an intellectual disability and comorbid autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome or Rett syndrome. Primary caregivers reported on their child's sleep using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), as well as medical comorbidities and functional abilities. Multivariate linear and logistic regressions were used to examine the effects of these factors on SDSC t scores and a binary indicator, respectively for the relevant subscales. Receiving operating characteristic curves were generated for each logistic regression model to determine their ability to discriminate between poor and good sleep. Comorbidities rather than functional abilities were associated with poorer sleep. In particular, recurrent pain, frequent seizures, frequent coughing, constipation and prescription of sleep medications were associated with abnormal sleep across the entire sample, but predictors differed between diagnostic groups. The present study suggests that comorbidities are more strongly associated with quality of sleep than functional impairments. The present study provides new information on potential associations between frequent coughing, prescription sleep medications and sleep quality that should be further investigated.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Non-pharmacological sleep interventions may improve sleep profiles without the side-effects observed with many pharmacological sleep aids. The objective of this research was to examine the association between sleep and inflammation and to examine how changes in dietary inflammatory potential influence changes in sleep. METHODS The Inflammation Management Intervention Study (IMAGINE), which was a dietary intervention designed to lower inflammation, provided access to 24-h dietary recalls (24HR), objectively measured sleep using SensewearTM armbands, and a range of self-reported demographics, health histories, lifestyle behaviors, psychosocial metrics, anthropometric measurements, and inflammatory biomarkers. Dietary Inflammatory Index® (DII®) scores were calculated from three unannounced 24HR-derived estimated intakes of whole foods and micro and macronutrients over a 2-week period at baseline and post-intervention (i.e. month 3). Statistical analyses primarily utilized linear regression. RESULTS At baseline, for every 1-min increase in sleep onset latency, tumor necrosis factor-α increased by 0.015 pg/mL (±0.008, p = 0.05). Every one-percentage increase in sleep efficiency was associated with decreased C-reactive protein (CRP) of -0.088 mg/L (±0.032, p = 0.01). Every 1-min increase in wake-after-sleep-onset (WASO) increased both CRP and interleukin-6. Compared to participants with pro-inflammatory DII changes over 3 months, those with anti-inflammatory changes decreased WASO (0 vs. -25 min, respectively, p < 0.01) and improved sleep efficiency (-2.1% vs. +2.6%, respectively, p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS Non-pharmacological treatments, such as anti-inflammatory diets, may improve sleep in some adults. Future research involving dietary treatments to improve sleep should not only focus on the general population, but also in those commonly experiencing co-morbid sleep complaints. Abstract
(1) Background: Sleep disorders are a common problem for public health since they are considered potential triggers and predictors of some mental and physical diseases. Evaluating the sleep quality of a person may be a first step to prevent further health issues that diminish their independence and quality of life. Polysomnography (PSG) is the “gold standard” for sleep studies, but this technique presents some drawbacks. Thus, this study intends to assess the capability of the new Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 5 to be used as a tool for sleep self-assessment. (2) Methods: This study will be an observational and prospective study set at the sleep unit of a hospital in A Coruña, Spain. Forty-three participants who meet the inclusion criteria will be asked to participate. Specific statistical methods will be used to analyze the data collected using the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 5 and PSG. (3) Discussion: This study offers a promising approach to assess whether the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 5 correctly records our sleep. Even though these devices are not expected to replace PSG, they may be used as an initial evaluation tool for users to manage their own sleep quality and, if necessary, consult a health professional. Further, the device may help users make simple changes to their habits to improve other health issues as well. Trial registration: NCT04568408 (Registered 23 September 2020).

Abstract
There have been numerous studies on the relationship between sleep and depression, as well as the relationship between sleep and depression, and heart rate variability (HRV), respectively. Even so, few studies have combined 24-h HRV analysis to study sleep quality and depressive symptoms. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between depressed symptoms, sleep quality, and 24-h HRV in medical students. The particiants were all students at a medical university in Guangdong province, China. A total of 74 college students participated. They were asked to complete a questionnaire that included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS), and 24-h ECG monitoring. The results showed that 41.7% of the medical students had poor sleep quality, with higher levels of depressive symptoms and more negative emotions, and there was no difference in 24-h HRV indices between the low PSQI group and the high one. Correlation analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between sleep quality and depressive symptoms (r = 0.617), but the relationship between 24-h HRV indices and PSQI global scores, BDI scores were not significant. However, the correlation analysis of PSQI components and 24-h HRV showed that sleep disturbance was significantly negatively correlated with SDNN and LF in waking period (r = -0.285, -0.235), and with SDNN in sleeping period (r = -0.317). In general, the sleep disturbance in PSQI components can sensitively reflect the relationship between sleep quality and 24-h HRV of medical students. Individuals with higher sleep disturance may have lower SDNN during awake period and bedtime period, and lower LF in awake period. Twenty-four hour HRV has certain application value in clinical sleep quality monitoring, and its sensitivity and specificity in clinical application and daily life are still worth further investigation.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Emerging evidence has documented that poor sleep quality associated with adverse effects with physical, psychological and neurological disorders, which impeded healthy aging. There is limited knowledge regarding the association of household air pollution (HAP) from solid fuel use with sleep quality, particularly among the population at advanced ages. The aim of this study is to investigate this association in oldest-old (≥80 years) populations. METHODS China Hainan Centenarian Cohort Study was conducted in the 18 cities and counties of Hainan Province from 2015 to 2017. A total of 1725 individuals aged 80 years and older were included in the study. We used the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) to measure individuals' sleep quality with a score of PSQI >8 indicating poor sleep quality. Solid fuel users were defined as those who primarily use coal, biomass charcoal, wood or straw for cooking in their daily life. The propensity score matching (PSM) was adopted and logistic regressions were performed based on the matched sample to estimate the association between the two factors. We adjusted for a wide range of covariates, including demographic, socioeconomic, health-related, and environmental factors. RESULTS After matching, a total of 1616 participants (mean [SD] age, 94.5 [9.5] years; 72.5% women) were included in the final analysis. About 50.9% of the participants used solid fuel for cooking. The average global PSQI score was 8.26 (SD = 3.3), 49.0% of them were detected as poor sleep quality with a global PSQI score >8. We found significantly higher risk of having poor sleep quality among those who were currently solid fuel users than among clean fuel users, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.43 (95% CI: 1.14-1.80), adjusting for a wide range of confounders. The associations were more pronounced in those who did not use any ventilation (compared to those who used either mechanical or natural cooking ventilation; 1.79 [1.30-2.47] vs. 1.27 [1.01-1.53], P for interaction = 0.016) and in those who were frequent cooking at home (compared to those who never cooked; 1.65 [1.21-2.26] vs. 1.18 [0.93-1.40], P for interaction = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS Exposure to HAP from solid fuel combustion increases the risk of poor sleep quality at oldest-old ages. Our findings point to the need of reducing HAP from polluted fuel combustion and implementing cooking ventilation as a public health priority for healthy aging initiatives.

Abstract
Lemborexant is a dual orexin receptor antagonist approved for treating insomnia. As the solubility of lemborexant is pH-sensitive, the impact of the gastric acid-reducing agent (ARA), famotidine, on lemborexant pharmacokinetics was evaluated in a Phase 1 study. Additionally, post hoc analysis of data from Phase 3 studies examined the potential effect of concomitant ARAs on patient-reported/subjective sleep onset latency (sSOL) in subjects with insomnia. Coadministration of lemborexant 10 mg with famotidine decreased the maximum observed concentration by 27% and delayed time of maximum observed concentration by 0.5 hours. Famotidine did not affect overall lemborexant exposure based on comparison of area under the concentration curves. Concomitant ARA use in the Phase 3 studies did not impact the effect of lemborexant on sSOL; the change from baseline during the last 7 nights of 1 month of treatment with lemborexant 10 mg was -17.1 minutes with vs -17.9 minutes without ARAs. Collectively, these results indicate that lemborexant can be coadministered with ARAs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with typical circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders (CRSWDs) have a habitual sleep timing that is desynchronized from social time schedules. However, it is possible to willfully force synchronisation against circadian-driven sleepiness, which causes other sleep problems. This pathology is distinguishable from typical CRSWDs and is referred to here as latent CRSWD (LCRSWD). Conventional diagnostic methods for typical CRSWDs are insufficient for detecting LCRSWD because sufferers have an apparently normal habitual sleep timing. METHODS We first evaluated the reliability of circadian phase estimation based on clock gene expression using hair follicles collected at three time points without sleep interruption. Next, to identify detection criteria for LCRSWD, we compared circadian and sleep parameters according to estimated circadian phases, at the group and individual level, between subjects with low and high Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores. To validate the reliability of identified detection criteria, we investigated whether the same subjects could be reproducibly identified at a later date and whether circadian amelioration resulted in sleep improvement. FINDINGS We successfully validated the reliability of circadian phase estimation at three time points and identified potential detection criteria for individuals with LCRSWD attributed to delayed circadian-driven sleepiness. In particular, a criterion based on the interval between the times of the estimated circadian phase of clock gene expression and getting out of bed on work or school days was promising. We also successfully confirmed the reproducibility of candidate screening and sleep improvement by circadian amelioration, supporting the reliability of the detection criteria. INTERPRETATION Although several limitations remain, our present study demonstrates a promising prototype of a detection method for LCRSWD attributed to delayed circadian-driven sleepiness. Abstract
BACKGROUND Excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy are among the symptoms of narcolepsy, a sleep disorder caused by the loss of hypocretin/orexin (HCRT/OX) neurons placed into the Hypothalamus (LH). Several treatments for managing narcolepsy include diverse drugs to induce alertness, such as antidepressants, amphetamine, or modafinil, etc. Recent evidence has shown that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychotropic derived from Cannabis sativa, shows positive therapeutic effects in neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson´s disease. Furthermore, CBD provokes alertness and enhances wake-related neurochemicals in laboratory animals. Thus, it is plausible to hypothesize that excessive somnolence observed in narcolepsy might be blocked by CBD. OBJECTIVE Here, we determined whether the systemic injection of CBD (5mg/kg, i.p.) would block the excessive sleepiness in a narcoleptic model. METHODS To test this idea, the neurotoxin hypocretin-2-saporin (HCRT2/SAP) was bilaterally injected into the LH of rats to eliminate HCRT leading to the establishment of narcoleptic-like behavior. Since excessive somnolence in HCRT2/SAP lesioned rats has been observed during the lights-off period, CBD was administered at the beginning of the dark phase. RESULTS Hourly analysis of sleep data showed that CBD blocked the sleepiness during the lights-off period across 7h post-injection in lesioned rats. CONCLUSION Taking together, these preliminary findings suggest that CBD might prevent sleepiness in narcolepsy.

Abstract
Insomnia is a symptom of physical or mental disorder and refers to decreased sleep time and potentially low quality. There is evidence showing that acupuncture could enhance management of insomnia, and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) is one of the promising acupoints. This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of stimulating single acupoint SP 6 in managing insomnia. The study was registered under PROSPERO CRD42019140855. English and Chinese databases were searched for randomized controlled trials on single acupoint SP 6 stimulation in management of insomnia. Quality of methodology was assessed by two authors independently using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool, and reporting quality was assessed by the STRICTA checklist. The primary outcome was the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and secondary outcomes were improvement in clinical effect and sleep duration assessed by polysomnogram (PSG). The extracted data were pooled and meta-analyzed with RevMan 5.3 software. Four trials involving 288 participants were included in this review. The findings showed that SP 6 stimulation could improve sleep quality (MD -0.30, 95% CI [-0.52, -0.08]), lengthen deep sleep duration (MD 80.46, 95% CI [56.47, 104.45]), rapid eye movement (REM) duration (MD 91.53, 95% CI [68.41, 114.65]), and increase improvement in clinical effect. Quality of reporting and methodology was limited in all included trials. Some limited evidence showed that single acupoint stimulation of SP 6 could improve sleep quality, lengthen deep sleep and REM duration of patients with insomnia. However, the findings in this review should be interpreted with caution due to methodological limitations.

Abstract
Current evidence on the relationship of phytoestrogens with sleep is limited and contradictory. In particular, studies on individual phytoestrogens and sleep have not been reported. Thus, this study aimed to appraise the associations of individual phytoestrogens with sleep disorders and sleep duration. This cross-sectional study comprising 4830 adults utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2010. Phytoestrogens were tested in urine specimens. Sleep disorders and sleep duration were based on a self-reported doctor's diagnosis and usual sleep duration. The main analyses utilized logistic and multinomial logistic regression models and a restricted cubic spline. In the fully adjusted model, compared with tertile 1 (lowest), the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) of sleep disorders for the highest tertile of urinary concentrations of enterolactone, enterodiol, and O-desmethylangolensin were 0.64 (0.41-1.00), 1.54 (1.07-2.21), and 1.89 (1.26-2.85), respectively. Linear inverse, approximatively linear positive, and inverted L-shaped concentration-response relationships were found between enterolactone, enterodiol, and O-desmethylangolensin and sleep disorders, respectively. Compared with normal sleep (7-8 h/night), the relative risk ratio (RRR) (95% CI) of very short sleep for enterolactone was 0.56 (0.36-0.86), and the RRR (95% CI) of long sleep risk for genistein was 0.62 (0.39-0.99). Furthermore, negative associations of genistein with sleep disorders and enterolactone with long sleep risk, as well as positive associations of enterodiol with both long and very short sleep, were observed in the stratified analysis by age or gender. Finally, a notable finding was that urinary O-desmethylangolensin concentration was positively related to sleep disorders in both females aged 40-59 years and non-Hispanic Whites but inversely associated with sleep disorders in both females aged 60 years or over and other Hispanics. Our findings suggested that enterolactone and genistein might be beneficial for preventing sleep disorders or non-normal sleep duration among adults, and enterodiol might be adverse toward this goal. However, the association of O-desmethylangolensin with sleep disorders might be discrepant in different races and females of different ages.

Abstract
There have been concerns about abuse and unnecessary chronic administration of zolpidem, and zolpidem's relation to suicide risk. To investigate the temporal association of zolpidem with the risk of suicide, we conducted a 12-year, population-based, retrospective cohort study on the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC), South Korea. Data were collected from 2002 to 2013 from the NHIS-NSC, and data cleaning was performed for 1,125,691 subjects. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to investigate the correlation over time between zolpidem medication and suicide. Over intervals commencing after 80 months of observation, the adjusted hazard ratio of suicides associated with the use of the zolpidem was 2.01 (95% CI: 1.58-2.56; p < 0.001). The mean cumulative number of days of zolpidem prescription was significantly longer in the suicide group than in the non-suicide group after log-transformation (p = 0.005). Cases of chronic use of zolpidem (over six months or one year) were significantly more common in the suicide group compared to the non-suicide group (p = 0.002 and 0.005, respectively). Subjects who received zolpidem medication had a significantly higher risk of suicide after at least 80 months of observation, suggesting a long-term increased suicide risk associated with insomnia exposed to zolpidem medication.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to compare three variants of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI usual, work- and work-free days: PSQIu, PSQIw, PSQIf) and to assess whether chronotype (MSFsc)/social jetlag (SJL) are associated with sleep quality in patients with sleep disorders (SD). METHODS In sum, 431 SD patients and 338 subjects from the general population (GP) were included. Participants filled in three variants of the PSQI and the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ). We used Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) to investigate effects of group (GP, SD), PSQI (usual, work or free) and their interaction (group∗PSQI) on scores. To investigate associations between MSFsc/SJL and the difference between PSQIw and PSQIf (PSQIdiff) in patients with SD we used linear regressions (N = 352). We used Sobel to test whether there was a mediation effect of SJL on the association between MSFsc and PSQIdiff. RESULTS PSQI scores differed between groups (p < 0.001). Post-hoc analysis revealed a significant difference between PSQIu vs. PSQIf and PSQIw vs. PSQIf with PSQIf presenting lower scores, while PSQIu vs. PSQIw did not differ in any group. In line with previous findings, SJL was associated to PSQIdiff in SD patients. CONCLUSIONS PSQIu mainly represents sleep quality on workdays also in SD patients. Being a late chronotype seems to be associated with higher differences in sleep quality on work-vs. free days mostly when it coincides with societal time constraints. Since sleep quality is poorer on workdays even in SD patients, we suggest that treatment strategies should address social aspects affecting sleep, including ways of minimizing SJL.

Abstract
Luteolin, a widespread flavonoid, has been known to have neuroprotective activity against various neurologic diseases such as epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease. However, little information is available regarding the hypnotic effect of luteolin. In this study, we evaluated the hypnotic effect of luteolin and its underlying mechanism. In pentobarbital-induced sleeping mice model, luteolin (1, and 3 mg/kg, p.o.) decreased sleep latency and increased the total sleep time. Through electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) recording, we demonstrated that luteolin increased non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep time and decreased wake time. To evaluate the underlying mechanism, we examined the effects of various pharmacological antagonists on the hypnotic effect of luteolin. The hypnotic effect of 3 mg/kg of luteolin was not affected by flumazenil, a GABAA receptor-benzodiazepine (GABAAR-BDZ) binding site antagonist, and bicuculine, a GABAAR-GABA binding site antagonist. On the other hand, the hypnotic effect of 3 mg/kg of luteolin was almost completely blocked by caffeine, an antagonist for both adenosine A1 and A2A receptor (A1R and A2AR), 8-Cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX), an A1R antagonist, and SCH-58261, an A2AR antagonist. From the binding affinity assay, we have found that luteolin significantly binds to not only A1R but also A2AR with IC50 of 1.19, 0.84 μg/kg, respectively. However, luteolin did not bind to either BDZ-receptor or GABAAR. From these results, it has been suggested that luteolin has hypnotic efficacy through A1R and A2AR binding.
