Photo-ammonification in surface water samples: Mechanism and influencing factors

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) accounts for a large proportion of the total aquatic nitrogen. Compared with dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), the reactivity of DON has received limited attention. Photo-ammonification contributes significantly to the transformation of DON to DIN. However, information on the mechanism of this process is limited. This study investigated the photo-ammonification process of different natural surface water samples. The effects of seasons and rainfall on this process were explored, and the contributing factors were identified. Results showed that the seasonal effect on photo-ammonification differed for different water samples, whereas rainfall increased the rates of photo-ammonification for most of the lakes. The concentrations of reactive species, including triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (³CDOM*) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂), were found to be significantly correlated with water optical-parameters. Multivariable linear regression analysis (R² = 0.617) revealed that the photo-ammonification of DON was mainly facilitated by ³CDOM* whereas ¹O₂ competed with ³CDOM* and showed an inhibiting effect. The components of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were identified by fluorescence excitation emission matrices coupled with parallel factor analysis and were found to be greatly influenced by the location. Allochthonous humic-like components were found to promote the production of reactive species while tryptophan-like component was found to be a reactive species consumer. This study revealed that the composition of DOM and the reactive species governed the rates of photo-ammonification.

Formation and degradation mechanisms of CX3R-type oxidation by-products during cobalt catalyzed peroxymonosulfate oxidation: The roles of Co3+ and SO4·

Sulfate radical (SO₄^·-)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) attract increasing attention in the control of micropollutants. However, SO₄^·- can react with other chemicals present in water and result in undesired oxidation by-products (OBPs) generation. The formation and degradation mechanisms of CX₃R-type OBPs during cobalt catalyzed peroxymonosulfate (Co²⁺/PMS) oxidation were investigated. In the formation of CX₃R-type OBPs, both Co³⁺ and SO₄^·- could convert chloride to free chlorine that then reacted with natural organic matter, leading to the formation of CX₃R-type OBPs. The concentrations of trichloromethane, chloral hydrate, dichloroacetonitrile, dichloroacetamide and trichloroacetamide after 15 min reaction were 9.8, 3.9, 1.2, 5.9 and 22.3 nM, respectively. Compared to SO₄^·-, Co³⁺ played a more significant role in the CX₃R-type OBP formation and calculated toxicity values of CX₃R-type OBPs. CX₃R-type OBPs could not only be formed but also be degraded at the same time during Co²⁺/PMS oxidation. As for the degradation of CX₃R-type OBPs, both Co³⁺ and SO₄^·- could transform CX₃R-type OBPs to chloride. Compared to Co³⁺, SO₄^·- played a more important role in the degradation of CX₃R-type OBPs and the conversion from chloride to final by-product chlorate. The adverse effects that results from Co³⁺ need more attention in SO₄^·--based AOPs application.

Fenton/Fenton-like processes with in-situ production of hydrogen peroxide/hydroxyl radical for degradation of emerging contaminants: Advances and prospects

Fenton processes based on the reaction between Fe²⁺ and H₂O₂ to produce hydroxyl radicals, have been widely studied and applied for the degradation of toxic organic contaminants in wastewater due to its high efficiency, mild condition and simple operation. However, H₂O₂ is usually added by bulk feeding, which suffers from the potential risks during the storage and transportation of H₂O₂ as well as its low utilization efficiency. Therefore, Fenton/Fenton-like processes with in-situ production of H₂O₂ have received increasing attention, in which H₂O₂ was in-situ produced through O₂ activation, then decomposed into hydroxyl radicals by Fenton catalysts. In this review, the in situ production of H₂O₂ for Fenton oxidation was introduced, the strategies for activation of O₂ to generate H₂O₂ were summarized, including chemical reduction, electro-catalysis and photo-catalysis, the influencing factors and the mechanisms of the in situ production and utilization of H₂O₂ in various Fenton/Fenton-like processes were analyzed and discussed, and the applications of these processes for the degradation of toxic organic contaminants were summarized. This review will deepen the understanding of the tacit cooperation between the in situ production and utilization of H₂O₂ in Fenton process, and provide the further insight into this promising process for degradation of emerging contaminants in industrial wastewater.

Heterogeneous Fenton catalysts: A review of recent advances

Heterogeneous Fenton catalysts are emerging as excellent materials for applications related to water purification. In this review, recent trends in the synthesis and application of heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for the abatement of organic pollutants and disinfection of microorganisms are discussed. It is noted that as the complexity of cell wall increases, the resistance level towards various disinfectants increases and it requires either harsh conditions or longer exposure time for the complete disinfection. In case of viruses, enveloped viruses (e.g. SARS-CoV-2) are found to be more susceptible to disinfectants than the non-enveloped viruses. The introduction of plasmonic materials with the Fenton catalysts broadens the visible light absorption efficiency of the hybrid material, and incorporation of semiconductor material improves the rate of regeneration of Fe(II) from Fe(III). A special emphasis is given to the use of Fenton catalysts for antibacterial applications. Composite materials of magnetite and ferrites remain a champion in this area because of their easy separation and reuse, owing to their magnetic properties. Iron minerals supported on clay materials, perovskites, carbon materials, zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) dramatically increase the catalytic degradation rate of contaminants by providing high surface area, good mechanical stability, and improved electron transfer. Moreover, insights to the zero-valent iron and its capacity to remove a wide range of organic pollutants, heavy metals and bacterial contamination are also discussed. Real world applications and the role of natural organic matter are summarised. Parameter optimisation (e.g. light source, dosage of catalyst, concentration of H2O2 etc.), sustainable models for the reusability or recyclability of the catalyst and the theoretical understanding and mechanistic aspects of the photo-Fenton process are also explained. Additionally, this review summarises the opportunities and future directions of research in the heterogeneous Fenton catalysis.

Adsorptive removal of hazardous organics from water and fuel with functionalized metal-organic frameworks: Contribution of functional groups

The purification of contaminated water and fuel is very important for our sustainability. Adsorptive removal has attracted significant attention because of possible applications in industry and the rapid development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which can be competitive adsorbents. In this review, the possible/competitive purification of water (contaminated with organics) and fuel (composed of S- and N-Containing compounds) via adsorption using MOFs, especially those with various functional groups (FGs), will be discussed. The contribution of FGs such as -OH, -COOH, -SO₃H, -NH₂, and -NH₃⁺ to adsorption/purification will be analyzed in detail, not only to understand the plausible adsorption mechanism but also to utilize specific FGs in adsorption. Moreover, methods for introducing FGs onto MOFs will be summarized. Finally, the prospects for both adsorption/removal and emerging fields will be suggested. Studies for practical applications in industry with shaped MOFs from inexpensive route will be important. The solution pH should be considered for the adsorption of aqueous solution. Applications of MOFs in other fields like storage/delivery and enrichment of analytes might be deeply studied.

Simultaneous Gd2O3 clusters decoration and O-doping of g-C3N4 by solvothermal-polycondensation method for reinforced photocatalytic activity towards sulfamerazine

To improve the visible-light photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitrate (g-C₃N₄) for practical application, a Gd₂O₃-cluster decorated O-doping g-C₃N₄ was fabricated via an ethanol assisted solvothermal-polycondensation method. The as-prepared photocatalysts, including bulk g-C₃N₄ (CN), O-doping g-C₃N₄ (HECN) and Gd₂O₃-cluster decorated O-doping g-C₃N₄ (HECN-xGd), were characterized and the paralleled experiments were conducted to evaluate the photocatalytic activity, mineralization capacity and mineralization mechanism, where sulfamerazine (SMR) was employed as the target pollutant. Furthermore, the quenching tests with scavengers were executed to analyze the contributions of the dominant active species, where the O₂^- was identified as a major role, and h⁺ as the minor role in the photodegradation of SMR. Results from the paralleled experiments suggested that the HECN-xGd possesses superior photocatalytic activity to HECN and CN, besides the feasible reusability through five cycles and impressive total organic carbon (TOC) removal about 60%. And the improved photocatalytic activity of HECN-xGd is ascribed mainly to the oxygen doping and Gd₂O₃ decoration. Herein, oxygen doping optimizes the structure of g-C₃N₄ and expands the light absorption range of HECN, and Gd₂O₃ facilitates the reduction of O₂ into O₂^-, and acts as the separator and transporter for the photo-induced charges.

Metal-Organic Frameworks: Synthetic Methods and Potential Applications

Metal-organic frameworks represent a porous class of materials that are build up from metal ions or oligonuclear metallic complexes and organic ligands. They can be considered as sub-class of coordination polymers and can be extended into one-dimension, two-dimensions, and three-dimensions. Depending on the size of the pores, MOFs are divided into nanoporous, mesoporous, and macroporous items. The latter two are usually amorphous. MOFs display high porosity, a large specific surface area, and high thermal stability due to the presence of coordination bonds. The pores can incorporate neutral molecules, such as solvent molecules, anions, and cations, depending on the overall charge of the MOF, gas molecules, and biomolecules. The structural diversity of the framework and the multifunctionality of the pores render this class of materials as candidates for a plethora of environmental and biomedical applications and also as catalysts, sensors, piezo/ferroelectric, thermoelectric, and magnetic materials. In the present review, the synthetic methods reported in the literature for preparing MOFs and their derived materials, and their potential applications in environment, energy, and biomedicine are discussed.

Quasi-MOF derivative-based electrode for efficient electro-Fenton oxidation

Developing efficient and robust materials for emerging electrodegradation of organic pollutants has attracted broad interests. In this study, a novel controlled pyrolysis approach was employed to fabricate a quasi-MOF derivative-based electrode by pyrolyzing MIL-101(Fe) anchored on a polyaniline-modified carbon fiber paper at 400 °C. The construction of the accessible Fe-O sites, and the in situ generation of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles with graphene-like carbon layers coated, would enhance the electro-Fenton activity of the electrode, which was used as the cathode. The results showed that 100 % of 50 mg L^-1 p-nitrophenol and 52 % total organic carbon were removed in 120 min under a current density of 5 mA cm^-2, suggesting that the prepared electrode had a more efficient mineralization current efficiency and less energy consumption compared with electrodes before pyrolysis. Notably, the stability of the electrode was greatly improved, maintaining its outstanding performance even after ten runs. The plausible reaction mechanism and degradation pathway were also proposed. This new pyrolysis strategy is expected to serve as a paradigm for designing efficient electrode in electro-Fenton remediation field.

Effect of Metal Ions on Oxidation of Micropollutants by Ferrate(VI): Enhancing Role of FeIV Species

This paper investigated the oxidation of recalcitrant micropollutants [i.e., atenolol (ATL), flumequine, aspartame, and diatrizoic acid] by combining ferrate(VI) (Fe^VIO₄^2-, Fe^VI) with a series of metal ions [i.e., Fe(III), Ca(II), Al(III), Sc(III), Co(II), and Ni(II)]. An addition of Fe(III) to Fe^VI enhanced the oxidation of micropollutants compared solely to Fe^VI. The enhanced oxidation of studied micropollutants increased with increasing [Fe(III)]/[Fe^VI] to 2.0. The complete conversion of phenyl methyl sulfoxide (PMSO), as a probe agent, to phenyl methyl sulfone (PMSO₂) by the Fe^VI-Fe(III) system suggested that the highly reactive intermediate Fe^IV/Fe^V species causes the increased oxidation of all four micropollutants. A kinetic modeling of the oxidation of ATL demonstrated that the major species causing the increase in ATL removal was Fe^IV, which had an estimated rate constant as (6.3 ± 0.2) × 10⁴ M^-1 s^-1, much higher than that of Fe^VI [(5.0 ± 0.4) × 10^-1 M^-1 s^-1]. Mechanisms of the formed oxidation products of ATL by Fe^IV, which included aromatic and/or benzylic oxidation, are delineated. The presence of natural organic matter significantly inhibited the removal of four pollutants by the Fe^VI-Fe(III) system. The enhanced effect of the Fe^VI-Fe(III) system was also seen in the oxidation of the micropollutants in river water and lake water.

Iron-nickel bimetallic metal-organic frameworks as bifunctional Fenton-like catalysts for enhanced adsorption and degradation of organic contaminants under visible light: Kinetics and mechanistic studies

Iron-nickel bimetallic organic frameworks (FeNi_X-BDC, H₂BDC: terephthalic acid) were developed as bifunctional materials for adsorption and photo-Fenton degradation of organic dyes with different charge properties. Significantly enhanced adsorption capacity of FeNi_1/15-BDC towards methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) was achieved, 5.3 and 2.6 times higher than that of pristine Fe-BDC, which was attributed to enlarged specific surface area and pore volume and the decreased surface charges induced by Ni doping. The adsorption kinetics demonstrated that chemisorption was dominant and intra-particle diffusion was the rate-controlling step. Two-stage degradation including slow induction stage and rapid oxidation stage fitted with pseudo-zero-order kinetics well. The increased rate constants (2.472 vs. 1.188 min^-1 for MB; 0.616 vs. 0.421 min^-1 for MO) in the induction stage as well as the superior removal capability by asynchronism relative to synchronism jointly corroborating the improved adsorption performance was favor for subsequent degradation. Notably, this heterogeneous system not only exhibited obvious advantages like wider pH working range (3-9), better stability and reusability of catalysts, but also achieved the dual objectives of in-situ decontamination and adsorbent regeneration. The coupling of adsorption and degradation along with synergism between photocatalysis and Fenton-like process are responsible for the reinforced removal of organic contaminants.

Design and application of metal-organic frameworks and derivatives as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts for organic wastewater treatment: A review

Advanced oxidation process (AOP), with a high oxidation efficiency, fast reaction speed (relatively no secondary pollution), has become one of the core technologies of industrial wastewater and advanced drinking water treatment. Heterogeneous Fenton-like oxidation process (HFOP) is a kind of AOP, which developed rapidly in recent years in such a way to overcome the disadvantages of traditional Fenton reaction. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives become essential heterogeneous catalysts for organics mineralization due to the large specific surface area, abundant active sites, and ease of structural regulation. However, the knowledge gap on the mechanism and the fate of heterogeneous catalyst species during organics degradation activities by MOFs presents considerable impediments, particularly for a wide application and scaling up the process. This work has the potential to provide guidance and ideas for researchers and engineers in the fields of environmental remediation, environmental catalysis and functional materials. This review focuses on clarifying the critical mechanism of •OH production from MOFs and derivatives as well as its action on the organic's degradation process. The recent developments in MOF based HFOP are compared, and more attention is paid for the following aspects in this review: (1) classifies systematically progressive modification methods of MOFs by chemical and physical treatments; (2) analyzes the fate of catalytic species during treating organic wastewater; (3) proposes design ideas and principles for improving the performance of MOFs catalysts; (4) discusses the main factors influencing the catalytic properties and practical application; (5) summarizes the possible research challenges and directions for MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts applied to wastewater treatment in the future.

Progress and challenges of metal-organic frameworks-based materials for SR-AOPs applications in water treatment

As environmental problems become more and more severe, sulfate radical (SO₄^-) based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are widely recognized for their high removal efficiency of recalcitrant organic pollutants in water. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted wide attention in SR-AOPs due to their outstanding properties (e.g. large surface area, ultra-high porosity, and diversity of material design, etc). Herein, we present an overview of the development and challenges in the synthesis of different types of MOFs, combination of MOFs with other materials (metal centers, conductors, cellulose, etc.) and the construction of catalysts with special structures (core-shell structures and hollow structures) as well as their applications in SR-AOPs for the degradation of organic pollutants. Several review papers have already mentioned the application of a branch of MOFs or simple composites of MOFs in SR-AOP, whereas the latest progresses on the application of MOFs-based materials to SR-AOPs was described rarely. Besides, the degradation mechanism of MOFs as catalysts has not been systematically discussed. To this end, the mechanisms of MOFs and MOF-based materials as catalysts to activate PMS/PS in different systems are analyzed, including radicals and non-radicals pathways. Meanwhile, considering that the research in this field is still in its infancy, a lot of improvements are still needed to effectively promote and implement this technology.

Graphitic carbon nitride-based materials in activating persulfate for aqueous organic pollutants degradation: A review on materials design and mechanisms

With the increasingly serious water environment problem, the persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (PS-AOP) has attracted considerable attention in water pollution treatment. To date, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has been greatly favored by researchers in activating PS for its capability and unique superiorities. Though g-C₃N₄-based PS-AOP exhibits huge development prospects in removing organic pollutants, the review about its research progress has not been reported. Herein, this paper reviews the modification of g-C₃N₄ on the basis of its applications and properties for PS activation systematically. The activation mechanisms of g-C₃N₄-based modified materials are analyzed in detail, and the main formation pathways of radicals and non-radicals and their interaction mechanism with pollutants are thoroughly summarized. Finally, the existing challenges and future development directions of the PS-AOP driven by g-C₃N₄-based materials are critically discussed. The key purpose is to provide a reference for promoting the further popularization of this novel and efficient cooperative AOP in water purification industries, as well as multidisciplinary inspirations for g-C₃N₄-involved fields.

Conformal Functionalization of Cotton Fibers via Isoreticular Expansion of UiO-66 Metal-Organic Frameworks

We report on the growing of metal-organic frameworks that are isoreticular and isostructural to UiO-66, onto cotton fabrics via a solvothermal method. Four different metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (UiO-66, UiO-66-NH2, UiO-66-NDC, and UiO-67) were chosen as a case study. The presence of the UiO-based MOFs was confirmed through X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. We used thermogravimetric analysis to quantify the amount of the MOF loading, which ranged from 0.8% to 2.6% m/m. We also explored the role of ligand size, growth time, and reaction temperature on the conformal coating of cotton fibers with these Zr-based MOFs. Cotton fabrics coated with Zr-based MOFs can find applications as selective filters in aggressive environments due to their enhanced chemical and thermal stabilities.

Elbaite catalyze peroxymonosulfate for advanced oxidation of organic pollutants: Hydroxyl groups induced generation of reactive oxygen species

In this work, the abundant, low-cost, innocuous, and chemically stable elbaite (a type of tourmaline) was employed to catalyze peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for wastewater purification by using methylene blue (MB) as one of the target pollutants. The results revealed that PMS could be catalyzed by elbaite within broad pH range (i.e., 2.9-10.7) and with low activation energy (i.e., 18.6 kJ/mol). Complete MB degradation was obtained within 15 min under the optimized conditions: [elbaite]₀ = 1.00 g/L, [PMS]₀ = 0.50 g/L, initial solution pH = 2.9. MB degradation (%) sustained 99.9 % after five successive catalytic reactions, indicating good durability and long-term stability. In addition, the complete degradation of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) and bisphenol A (BPA) further confirmed the degradation activity of the PMS/elbaite system. PMS interacted with elbaite via replacing the surface-bonded and structural OH groups of elbaite with its OH groups to bond with ^YLi^YAl^YR and ^YLi^ZAl^ZR cations (R = Al, Li, Fe, Mg, Mn, Cr, V), which offered channels for electron transfer from negatively charged elbaite to PMS, leading to the activation of PMS. Thus, elbaite is found to be promising for catalyzing PMS to treat organic wastewater.

Photocatalytic Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment: Recent Advances and Perspective

Nowadays, an ever-increasing variety of organic contaminants in water has caused hazards to the ecological environment and human health. Many of them are persistent and non-biodegradable. Various techniques have been studied for sewage treatment, including biological, physical and chemical methods. Photocatalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received increasing attention due to their fast reaction rates and strong oxidation capability, low cost compared with the non-photolytic AOPs. This review is dedicated to summarizing up-to-date research progress in photocatalytic AOPs, such as Fenton or Fenton-like reaction, ozonation and sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes. Mechanisms and activation processes are discussed. Then, the paper summarizes photocatalytic materials and modification strategies, including defect chemistry, morphology control, heterostructure design, noble metal deposition. The future perspectives and challenges are also discussed.

One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesis of La-Doped ZnIn2S4 Microspheres with Improved Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance

Impurity element doping is extensively taken as one of the most efficient strategies to regulate the electronic structure as well as the rate of photogenerated charge separation of photocatalysts. Herein, a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis process was exploited to obtain La-doped ZnIn₂S₄ microspheres, aiming at gaining insight into the role that doping ions played in the improvement of pollutant photodegradation. Systematical characterization means, comprising of X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflection spectroscopy and Raman spectra, combination with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), were employed to in depth reveal the concomitancy of La ions and ZnIn₂S₄ crystal lattice. The results showed that the La-doped ZnIn₂S₄ samples exhibited a slightly wider and stronger spectral absorption than pristine ZnIn₂S₄; and the specific surface area of doped ZnIn₂S₄ samples was a bit larger. The La-doped ZnIn₂S₄ electrodes showed improved photocurrent response, and the photocurrent density reached a maximum value at La content of 1.5 wt%. As expected, La-doped ZnIn₂S₄ samples exhibited a remarkable enhancement of photocatalytic behaviour toward the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and methyl orange (MO). The prominently enhanced photoactivity of doped ZnIn₂S₄ samples was due to the synergistic effect of the elevated visible-light absorption ability and effective photogenerated charge carriers’ separation.

Mechanism and stability of an Fe-based 2D MOF during the photoelectro-Fenton treatment of organic micropollutants under UVA and visible light irradiation

This work reports the novel application of an Fe-based 2D metal-organic framework (MOF), prepared with 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylate (bpydc) as organic linker, as highly active catalyst for heterogeneous photoelectro-Fenton (PEF) treatment of the lipid regulator bezafibrate in a model matrix and urban wastewater. Well-dispersed 2D structures were successfully synthesized and their morphological, physicochemical and photocatalytic properties were assessed. UV/Vis PEF using an IrO₂/air-diffusion cell with an extremely low catalyst concentration (0.05 g L^-1, tenfold lower than reported 3D MOFs) outperformed electro-oxidation with electrogenerated H₂O₂, electro-Fenton and visible-light PEF. Its excellent performance was explained by: (i) the enhanced mass transport of H₂O₂ (and organic molecules) at the 2D structure, providing active sites for heterogeneous Fenton's reaction and in-situ Fe(II) regeneration; (ii) the ability of photoinduced electrons to reduce H₂O₂ to ^•OH, and Fe(III) to Fe(II); and (iii) the enhanced charge transfer and excitation of Fe-O clusters, which increased the number of electron-hole pairs. LC-QToF-MS and GC-MS allowed the identification of 16 aromatic products of bezafibrate. The complete removal of four micropollutants mixed in urban wastewater at pH 7.4 revealed the great potential of (Fe-bpydc)-catalyzed PEF process.

Change of disinfection byproducts formation potential of natural organic matter after exposure to persulphate and bicarbonate

Activated persulphate (PS) oxidation is a promising in situ remediation technology for groundwater and soils. Application of this technology to contaminated zones may result in a large quantity of PS residue in the subsurface environment due to inefficient activation and repeated injection. In this study, we demonstrated that natural organic matter (NOM) molecules could be reconfigured due to exposure to unactivated PS and bicarbonate, resulting in reduced disinfection byproducts formation potential in post chlorination process. Fourier transformed inferred spectrometry (FTIR), size exclusive chromotraghy (SEC), and mass spectrometry (MS) analysis revealed that hydroxylation and carboxylation of NOM occurred, followed by inter-molecular coupling via ether bonds. The change of both the reactivity toward free chlorine and molecular structure of NOM during PS/bicarbonate treatment was well mimicked by 3,5-dihydroxylbenzoic acid, suggesting that phenolic moieties in NOM molecules were the main sites underwent transformation in the PS/bicarbonate system. We propose that peroxymonocarbonate (HCO₄^-) formed upon the reaction between PS and bicarbonate was the main reactive species responsible for the reconfiguration of NOM. It selectively attacked the phenolic moieties via single-electron abstracting mechanism, leading to phenoxy radical intermediates which couple to each other via C-O-C bonds. The findings of this study shed light on the environmental behaviors and impacts of PS in groundwater environment.

In-situ fabrication of nanoarchitectured MOF filter for water purification

Sulfate radical (SO₄^•-)-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) hold great promise for water purification due to their strong oxidizing and high selectivity. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to generate SO₄^•- have shown a bright future. However, the intrinsic nature of powder MOF nanocrystals, such as brittleness and poor processability, largely disturb their large-scale applications in practical. Herein, we develop an in situ growth method to prepare MOF filters. ZIF-67 in situ growth on the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers lead to the ZIF-67/PAN composite fibers with high loading (up to 50 wt %). The loading ZIF-67 can retain their morphology and structure, which is comparable with that of pristine ZIF-67 powder. The ZIF-67/PAN filter demonstrates a high efficiency for organic pollutants removal by PMS activation. Furthermore, through the fabrication of filtration device, the dynamic catalysis results show the ZIF-67/PAN filter is a promising material for water purification. This work provides a new method for applying MOFs-based functional materials to practical water remediation and other separation applications.

N-Benzyl HMTA induced self-assembly of organic-inorganic hybrid materials for efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Photocatalytic degradation technology (PDT), as one of the most important advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) for environment-purifying, have drawn great attentions in recent years. It is highly desirable but remains challenging to design and synthesize catalysts with enhanced performance of photocatalysis. Herein, we develop a cation induced self-assembly strategy for the synthesis of two new organic-inorganic hybrid materials ({[BHMTA][Cu₂(SCN)₃]}_n (1), {[BHMTA][Cu₂I₃]}_n (2) BHMTA = N-benzylhexamethylenetetramine bromide). Owing to their unique structural and the desirable composition, the as-prepared organic-inorganic hybrid materials exhibit high efficiency and excellent cycling stability for degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation. In addition, the effect factors for photocatalysis such as catalyst dosage, temperature, and pH were also investigated. The possible mechanism studied shows that superoxide radicals (O^2-) and holes (h⁺) are the main active substances in the degradation process of TC. This work may shed light on preparing new organic-inorganic hybrid materials with promising photocatalysis performance for water purification.

Thermal Post-Treatments to Enhance the Water Stability of NH2-MIL-125(Ti)

NH2-MIL-125(Ti) is a metal organic framework (MOF) based on Ti-oxo-clusters widely investigated in water-related applications. Such applications require MOFs with an excellent stability in the aqueous phase, but, despite this, the extent of MOFs’ degradation in water is still not yet fully understood. In this study, we report a quantitative study of the water stability of NH2-MIL-125(Ti), analyzing the ligand release along the contact time in water. This study demonstrates that NH2-MIL-125(Ti) easily leached out over time while maintaining its structure. The effect of different thermal treatments applied to NH2-MIL-125(Ti) was investigated to enhance its water stability. The structural and textural properties of those modified MOFs were studied in detail and those maintaining the NH2-MIL-125(Ti) properties were exposed to aqueous medium. The analysis of the released ligand concentration in the filtrate can provide information on the water stability of this material.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Micropollutants in Water by Zr-MOF/GO Composites

Nanocomposites of UiO-66 and graphene oxide (UiO-66_GO) were prepared with different GO contents by a one-step hydrothermal method, and their photocatalytic activities for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) were investigated under ranges of GO loading, catalyst dose, initial pollutant concentration, and solution pH. The UiO-66_GO nanocomposites showed photocatalytic rate constant up to 0.0136 min−1 for CBZ degradation and its high overall removal efficiency (>90%) in 2 h. The photocatalytic rate constant over the UiO-66_GO nanocomposite was about 2.8 and 1.7 times higher than those over pristine GO and UiO-66, respectively. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity by GO was attributed to increased surface area and porosity, improved light absorption, and narrowed band gap. The composite also showed substantial recyclability and stability over five consecutive cycles of photocatalytic degradation. The experimental results indicated that O2●− and OH● are the responsible radicals for photocatalytic degradation, which helped us propose a photocatalytic mechanism for the enhanced CBZ photodegradation. This work provides a reference for the development of GO-based composite photocatalysts and expands the application of UiO-66 as a photocatalyst for the degradation of persistent micropollutants in water.

Current Trends in the Application of Nanomaterials for the Removal of Emerging Micropollutants and Pathogens from Water

Water resources contamination has a worldwide impact and is a cause of global concern. The need for provision of clean water is becoming more and more demanding. Nanotechnology may support effective strategies for the treatment, use and reuse of water and the development of next-generation water supply systems. The excellent properties and effectiveness of nanomaterials make them particularly suitable for water/wastewater treatment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the main categories of nanomaterials used in catalytic processes (carbon nanotubes/graphitic carbon nitride (CNT/g-C₃N₄) composites/graphene-based composites, metal oxides and composites, metal–organic framework and commercially available nanomaterials). These materials have found application in the removal of different categories of pollutants, including pharmaceutically active compounds, personal care products, organic micropollutants, as well as for the disinfection of bacterial, viral and protozoa microbial targets, in water and wastewater matrices. Apart from reviewing the characteristics and efficacy of the aforementioned nanoengineered materials for the removal of different pollutants, we have also recorded performance limitations issues (e.g., toxicity, operating conditions and reuse) for their practical application in water and wastewater treatment on large scale. Research efforts and continuous production are expected to support the development of eco-friendly, economic and efficient nanomaterials for real life applications in the near future.

Enhancing the Fenton-like Catalytic Activity of nFe2O3 by MIL-53(Cu) Support: A Mechanistic Investigation

A novel Fenton-like catalyst was synthesized by immobilizing nano-Fe₂O₃ (nFe₂O₃) on MIL-53(Cu). The pseudo-first-order rate constant of bisphenol A degradation in the nFe₂O₃/MIL-53(Cu)/H₂O₂ system reached 0.0123 min^-1, while the values in MIL-53(Cu)/H₂O₂ and nFe₂O₃/H₂O₂ systems were only 0.0026 and 0.0040 min^-1, respectively. The characterization of nFe₂O₃/MIL-53(Cu) reveals that the supreme catalytic activity of this material could be ascribed to iron-copper synergy, smaller size, and better dispersion of nFe₂O₃ particles. Moreover, a method of trapping Cu(I) by neocuproine was developed, which could shield Cu(I) from interacting with iron and H₂O₂, and thus allow quantitative differentiation of the contribution to the enhanced catalytic activity by each of the factors. Using this method, 19% of the enhancement was determined to be contributed by synergistic effect, while 24% of the enhancement was due to the smaller size and better dispersion of the nFe₂O₃ particles on MIL-53(Cu) support. In addition, the performance of nFe₂O₃/MIL-53(Cu) only dropped 10.7% after five treatment cycles in real wastewater, showing good potential in practical application. We believe this study sheds light on the tailored design of Fenton-like catalysts and elucidates the catalytic mechanisms of supported bimetallic catalysts.

A Highly Stable Metal-Organic Framework-Engineered FeS2/C Nanocatalyst for Heterogeneous Electro-Fenton Treatment: Validation in Wastewater at Mild pH

Herein, the novel application of FeS₂/C nanocomposite as a highly active, stable, and recyclable catalyst for heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) treatment of organic water pollutants is discussed. The simultaneous carbonization and sulfidation of an iron-based metal-organic framework (MOF) yielded well-dispersed pyrite FeS₂ nanoparticles of ∼100 nm diameter linked to porous carbon. XPS analysis revealed the presence of doping N atoms. EF treatment with an IrO₂/air-diffusion cell ensured the complete removal of the antidepressant fluoxetine spiked into urban wastewater at near-neutral pH after 60 min at 50 mA with 0.4 g L^-1 catalyst as optimum dose. The clear enhancement of catalytic activity and stability of the material as compared to natural pyrite was evidenced, as deduced from its characterization before and after use. The final solutions contained <1.5 mg L^-1 dissolved iron and became progressively acidified. Fluorescence excitation-emission spectroscopy with parallel factor analysis demonstrated the large mineralization of all wastewater components at 6 h, which was accompanied by a substantial decrease of toxicity. A mechanism with ^•OH as the dominant oxidant was proposed: FeS₂ core-shell nanoparticles served as Fe²⁺ shuttles for homogeneous Fenton's reaction and provided active sites for the heterogeneous Fenton process, whereas nanoporous carbon allowed minimizing the mass transport limitations.

Direct Z-scheme 1D/2D WO2.72/ZnIn2S4 hybrid photocatalysts with highly-efficient visible-light-driven photodegradation towards tetracycline hydrochloride removal

There are increasing environmental concerns of serious pollution from emission of antibiotic wastewater. Herein, a series of direct Z-scheme WO_2.72/ZnIn₂S₄ (WOZIS) hybrid photocatalysts composed of one-dimensional (1D) WO_2.72 (WO) nanorods and two-dimensional (2D) ZnIn₂S₄ (ZIS) nanosheets have been designed and constructed for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation without presence of solid-state electron mediators. The crystalline phase, chemical composition, morphology, optical properties and photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples were characterized by the XRD, XPS, SEM, HRTEM, BET, UV-vis DRS, and PL. Obviously, all the WOZIS hybrid photocatalysts exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity towards TCH degradation. Meanwhile, WOZIS-1 sample with WO/ZIS molar ratio of 1:1 showed the highest photocatalytic activity. The significantly enhanced photoactivity of WOZIS hybrid photocatalyst was due to Z-scheme charge separation mechanism based on the build of tight interfacial contacts between WO nanorods and ZIS nanosheets, thereby driving efficient charge separation. Moreover, the high photocatalytic stability of as-prepared WOZIS-1 hybrid sample was revealed through seven successive cycling reactions.

Iron-based metal-organic frameworks as novel platforms for catalytic ozonation of organic pollutant: Efficiency and mechanism

Developing new heterogeneous catalysts has attracted much attention and is of significant importance for the efficient catalytic ozonation of organic pollutant. Herein, for the first time, we explored four environmental-benign iron-based MOFs (Fe-MOFs) for the catalytic ozonation reaction. These Fe-MOFs were characterized by PXRD, FT-IR, SEM, XPS, N₂ sorption-desorption isotherms and chemisorbed-pyridine IR. All Fe-MOFs show high catalytic performances with their intrinsic Lewis acid sites (LAS). Furthermore, MIL-53(Fe) demonstrates the highest catalytic activity because of its largest amount of LAS and suitable porosity-derived attractive mass-transfer property. The Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation kinetic rate is calculated to be 5.76 min^-1 with MIL-53(Fe), while 1.82 min^-1 with MIL-88B(Fe), 1.40 min^-1 with MIL-101(Fe), 0.87 min^-1 with MIL-100(Fe) and 0.43 min^-1 of ozonation alone. The TOC removal in MIL-53(Fe)/O₃ system is 4 times higher than that of ozonation alone. MIL-53(Fe) displays acceptable reusability and stability after 5 cycles. Surface LAS of MIL-53(Fe) are the active sites for the ozone decomposition. Moreover, surface-adsorbed hydroxyl radical, superoxide radical and singlet oxygen are confirmed as the reactive oxygen species from ozone decomposition in MIL-53(Fe) suspension. This work offers new platforms for catalytic ozonation and may drive the development of MOFs-based catalytic ozonation for effective water treatment.
