Removal of Antibiotics from Water by Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity: Isotherms, Kinetics, Thermodynamics, and Adsorption Mechanism

Traces of antibiotics within domestic and industrial effluents have toxic impact on human health as well as surrounding flora and fauna. Potential increase in antibiotic resistance of microorganisms is likely to rise due to the incomplete removal of antibiotics by traditional wastewater processing, methods such as membrane filtration and biological treatment. In this study, we investigated a novel class of material termed Polymer of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIM) that is based on amorphous microporous organic materials for the application of antibiotic removal form aqueous environments. The adsorption of four commonly used antibiotics (doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, penicillin G, and amoxicillin) was evaluated and found that at least 80% of the initial concentrations was eliminated under the optimized conditions. Langmuir and Freundlich models were then employed to correlate the equilibria data; the Freundlich model fit well the data in all cases. For kinetic data, pseudo-first and second order models were examined. Pseudo-second order model fit well the kinetic data and allowed the calculation of the adsorption rate constants. Thermodynamic parameters were obtained by conducting the adsorption studies at varied reaction temperatures. Surface potential, adsorption at various solution pHs, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Infrared spectroscopy (IR), and surface area experiments were conducted to draw possible adsorption mechanisms. The removal of antibiotics from water by PIM-1 is likely to be governed by both surface and pore-filling adsorption and could be facilitated by electrostatic interactions between the aromatic rings and charged functional groups as well as hydrogen bond formation between the adsorbent and adsorbate. Our work shows that the application of such novel microporous material could contribute to the removal of such challenging and persistent contaminants from wastewater with further optimizations of large-scale adsorption processes.

Insights on adsorption of carbamazepine onto iron oxide modified diatomaceous earth: Kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and mechanisms

To ameliorate adsorbent recovery by an external magnetic field, naturally occurring diatomaceous earth (DE) was modified with iron-oxide, characterized and applied for adsorption of carbamazepine (CBZ) from synthetic wastewater using batch equilibration method. The fabricated adsorbent was characterized using XRF, XRD, SEM-EDX, FT-IR, BET surface area analysis, VSM and pH of point of zero charge (pH_pzc) determination. The adsorption rate was described by the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model suggesting a physisorption controlled rate-determining step. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to linear and nonlinear isotherm models, viz Langmuir and Freundlich models, and were best described by Freundlich nonlinear equations implying heterogeneous multilayer adsorption. The best-fitting kinetic and isotherm model was determined using four mathematical error functions. The thermodynamic parameters, namely enthalpy (ΔH = -26.4 kJ mol^-1), Gibbs free energy (ΔG = -2.22 kJ mol^-1 at 298 K), entropy (ΔS = -34.0 kJ mol^-1), indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous, exothermic, and physical process. The adsorption mechanism is postulated to involve cation-π interactions. Modified diatomaceous earth is a potentially excellent, low-cost, and novel sorbent for CBZ adsorption with 88% removal in 180 min and provides a possible alternative adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Adsorption thermodynamic characteristics of Chlorella vulgaris with organic polymer adsorbent cationic starch: Effect of temperature on adsorption capacity and rate

Aiming at optimizing the adsorption process of Chlorella vulgaris and cationic starch, the adsorption thermodynamic characteristics were evaluated. Different from inorganic calcium salt adsorbent, the adsorption nature of organic polymer cationic starch is exothermic (ΔH° < 0) and spontaneous (ΔG° < 0). Besides, the adsorption capacity and rate can be well described by Langmiur isotherm and pseudo second kinetic models. As results of exothermic nature and great driving force of lower temperature, the adsorption capacity and rate declined with the rising temperature. The maximal values of them were obtained at 278.15 K, which were 9148.14 mg microalgae (g cationic starch)^-1 and 8.74 × 10^-6 mg g^-1 min^-1. Additionally, with insufficient adsorbent, the highest adsorption efficiency (96.37%) was achieved at 278.15 K for stirring 150 min. For 288.15, 298.15, 308.15 and 318.15 K, the adsorption efficiency decreased to 93.77%, 86.75%, 83.32% and 81.57% and the time consumed were at least 40 min longer.

Fixed bed biosorption of silver and investigation of functional groups on acidified biosorbent from algae biomass

This work investigated the use of acidified dealginated residue from Sargassum filipendula algae for biosorption of silver in fixed bed column. This biosorbent was esterified for carboxyl and sulfonate groups to investigate the influence of these groups on silver removal percentage. Potentiometric titration was also evaluated on acidified and esterified biosorbents. Porosity and specific weight were determined by helium picnometry and mercury porosimetry techniques. The results showed that carboxyl and sulfonate groups were significant on silver biosorption. Potentiometric titration showed that esterified and acidified biosorbents presented different acid groups. The porosity of the acidified biosorbent was around 40%. Fixed bed assays were conducted to evaluate the influence of inlet concentration and feed flow rate of silver. Higher percentage removal of silver was obtained at 1.0 mmol · L-1 and 0.5 mL · min-1. Modified dose-response model obtained the best prediction of experimental data among breakthrough curve models.

Assessment of the Cu(II) and Pb(II) removal efficiency of aqueous solutions by the dry biomass Aguapé: kinetics of adsorption

Plant-based materials are promising adsorbents for treating liquid effluents. This study describes the kinetic and equilibrium parameters that best represent the copper(II) and lead(II) removal process by Eichhornia crassipes (Aguapé) dry biomass from aqueous solution, using a batch adsorption system. The plants were washed, dried, and reduced to small particles. The adsorption kinetics were assessed by varying the metal concentrations in 5, 10, and 20 mg L^-1 and a control treatment (without metals) with a mixture contact time of between 5 and 720 min. Equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Kinetic assay revealed fast adsorption: kinetic equilibrium was attained within 2 h with a removal efficiency of ~ 60%. The results demonstrated a fast recovery cycle of metals using the biosorbent. The biomass of E. crassipes is low cost with potential for use as a biosorbent to remove metals from solutions.

Optimisation and Modelling of Pb (II) and Cu (II) Biosorption onto Red Algae (Gracilaria changii) by Using Response Surface Methodology

The removal of Pb (II) and Cu (II) ions by using marine red macroalgae (Gracilaria changii) as a biosorbent material was evaluated through the batch equilibrium technique. The effect of solution pH on the removal of metal ions was investigated within the range of 2–7. The response surface methodology (RSM) technique involving central composite design (CCD) was utilised to optimise the three main sorption parameters, namely initial metal ion concentration, contact time, and biosorbent dosage, to achieve maximum ion removal. The models’ adequacy of response was verified by ANOVA. The optimum conditions for removal of Pb (II) and Cu (II) were as follows: pH values of 4.5 and 5, initial concentrations of 40 mg/L, contact times of 115 and 45 min, and biosorbent dosage of 1 g/L, at which the maximum removal percentages were 96.3% and 44.77%, respectively. The results of the adsorption isotherm study showed that the data fitted well with the Langmuir’s model for Pb (II) and Cu (II). The results of the adsorption kinetic study showed that the data fitted well with the pseudo-second order model for Pb (II) and Cu (II). In conclusion, red alga biomass exhibits great potential as an efficient low-cost sorbent for removal of metal ions.

Evaluation and Proteomic Analysis of Lead Adsorption by Lactic Acid Bacteria

Heavy metals are a growing threat to human health due to the resulting damage to the ecology; the removal of heavy metals by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) has been a focus of many studies. In this study, 10 LAB strains were evaluated for their ability to absorb and tolerate lead. Lactobacillus plantarum YW11 was found to possess the strongest ability of lead absorbing and tolerance, with the rate of absorption as high as 99.9% and the minimum inhibitory concentration of lead on YW11 higher than 1000 mg/L. Based on the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) proteomics analysis of YW11, a total of 2009 proteins were identified both in the lead-treated strain and the control without the lead treatment. Among these proteins, 44 different proteins were identified. The abundance of 25 proteins increased significantly, and 19 proteins decreased significantly in the treatment group. These significantly differential abundant proteins are involved in the biological processes of amino acid and lipid metabolism, energy metabolism, cell wall biosynthesis, and substance transport. This study contributed further understanding of the molecular mechanism of L. plantarum in the binding and removal of lead to explore its potential application in counteracting heavy metal pollution of environment, food, and other fields.

Recombinant Fusion Protein PbrD Cross-Linked to Calcium Alginate Nanoparticles for Pb Remediation

Lead (Pb) pollution arising from industrial and mining activities has led to widespread environmental toxicity, particularly in South Africa. Humans exposed to Pb are reported to suffer from detrimental health impacts that can lead to fatalities. As such, there is an urgent need to remediate Pb from the environment. In this study, we propose the use of a Pb-specific recombinant fusion metalloprotein, rPbrD surface-cross-linked onto calcium alginate nanoparticles (CANPs) for the biosorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The prepared biosorbents were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. Their ability to biosorb soluble Pb(II) was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy and their adsorption mechanism was described according to the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherms. The rate of Pb uptake for bare CANPs and rPbrD-CANPs at a concentration of 100 mg/L metal was 3.34 and 8.82 mg/g, respectively, within 30 min. The adsorption data for the bare CANPs best fit the Langmuir isotherm, whereas the adsorption data for rPbrD-CANPs best fitted the Freundlich isotherm. Based on the sorption intensity (n) and the separation factor (R _L), both biosorbents represent a favorable adsorption system. These findings suggest that the proposed nanobiosorbent is a promising candidate for the recovery of Pb ions present in high concentrations such as acid mine drainage or industrial effluent.

Adsorption as a technology to achieve ultra-low concentrations of phosphate: Research gaps and economic analysis

Eutrophication and the resulting formation of harmful algal blooms (HAB) causes huge economic and environmental damages. Phosphorus (P) from sewage effluent and agricultural run-off has been identified as a major cause for eutrophication. Phosphorous concentrations greater than 100 μg P/L are usually considered high enough to cause eutrophication. The strictest regulations however aim to restrict the concentration below 10 μg P/L. Orthophosphate (or phosphate) is the bioavailable form of phosphorus. Adsorption is often suggested as technology to reduce phosphate to concentrations less than 100 and even 10 μg P/L with the advantages of a low-footprint, minimal waste generation and the option to recover the phosphate. Although many studies report on phosphate adsorption, there is insufficient information regarding parameters that are necessary to evaluate its application on a large scale. This review discusses the main parameters that affect the economics of phosphate adsorption and highlights the research gaps. A scenario and sensitivity analysis shows the importance of adsorbent regeneration and reuse. The cost of phosphate adsorption using reusable porous metal oxide is in the range of $ 100 to 200/Kg P for reducing the phosphate to ultra-low concentrations. Future research needs to focus on adsorption capacity at low phosphate concentrations, regeneration and reuse of both the adsorbent and the regeneration liquid.

Fabrication of calixarene-grafted magnetic nanocomposite for the effective removal of lead(II) from aqueous solution

Magnetic nanocomposites adorned with calixarene were successfully prepared by immobilizing diethanolamine functionalized p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (DEA-Calix) onto silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The synthesis, surface morphology, purity, elemental composition and thermal stability of newly prepared nanocomposites were analyzed using FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Magnetic solid-phase adsorption (MSPA) was employed to explore the adsorption behavior of DEA-Calix-MNPs towards Pb(II) from water samples prior to its flame atomic absorption spectrometric analysis. The essential analytical factors governing the adsorption efficiency such as solution pH, mass of adsorbent, concentration and contact time have been investigated and optimized. The results depict that DEA-Calix-MNPs has excellent adsorption efficiency 97% (at pH 5.5) with high adsorption capacity of 51.81 mg g^-1 for Pb(II) adsorption. Additionally, kinetic and equilibrium studies suggested that Pb(II) adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherms, respectively. Real sample analysis also confirmed field applicability of the new DEA-Calix-MNPs adsorbent.

Enhanced Gold Biosorption of Lysinibacillus sphaericus CBAM5 by Encapsulation of Bacteria in an Alginate Matrix

Given its variety of properties, including conductivity and slow corrosion, the industrial uses for gold are increasing dramatically. This means that greater amounts of gold are being released into the environment and that a biological approach to recycling gold is of great interest. Lysinibacillus sphaericus, a bacterium capable of metal accumulation inside the cell and adsorption in the external surface, was encapsulated in an alginate matrix to improve the capture of gold from aqueous media. In this study, L. sphaericus CBAM5 proved to have the greatest potential compared to other strains and, following its encapsulation, the efficiency for the removal of the precious metal, at a concentration of 60 ppm, was 100% after three hours of exposure. It was identified that the alginate spheres with bacteria could also be reused. In fact, an efficiency of 60% was retained after three cycles of utilization. Thus, alginate acts as an adequate immobilization matrix for bacteria as a highly effective gold capture mechanism, which also shows great potential as an alternative for biotechnological applications.

Safe Cultivation of Medicago sativa in Metal-Polluted Soils from Semi-Arid Regions Assisted by Heat- and Metallo-Resistant PGPR

Soil contamination with heavy metals is a constraint for plant establishment and development for which phytoremediation may be a solution, since rhizobacteria may alleviate plant stress under these conditions. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to elucidate the effect of toxic metals on growth, the activities of ROS (reactive oxygen species)-scavenging enzymes, and gene expression of Medicago sativa grown under different metal and/or inoculation treatments. The results showed that, besides reducing biomass, heavy metals negatively affected physiological parameters such as chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange, while increasing ROS-scavenging enzyme activities. Inoculation of M. sativa with a bacterial consortium of heat- and metallo-resistant bacteria alleviated metal stress, as deduced from the improvement of growth, lower levels of antioxidant enzymes, and increased physiological parameters. The bacteria were able to effectively colonize and form biofilms onto the roots of plants cultivated in the presence of metals, as observed by scanning electron microscopy. Results also evidenced the important role of glutathione reductase (GR), phytochelatin synthase (PCS), and metal transporter NRAMP1 genes as pathways for metal stress management, whereas the gene coding for cytochrome P450 (CP450) seemed to be regulated by the presence of the bacteria. These outcomes showed that the interaction of metal-resistant rhizobacteria/legumes can be used as an instrument to remediate metal-contaminated soils, while cultivation of inoculated legumes on these soils is still safe for animal grazing, since inoculation with bacteria diminished the concentrations of heavy metals accumulated in the aboveground parts of the plants to below toxic levels.

Processing-Structure-Property Correlation Understanding of Microfibrillated Cellulose Based Dimensional Structures for Ferric Ions Removal

In this research article, wood based microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) was studied to gain a better understanding of the process of dependent network formation. Networking potential and obtained properties of the produced dimensional structures could be controlled using opted processing routes. The fabricated dimensional structure, using freeze-drying (FD) is a highly open and porous network (98% porosity) compared to slightly tight, dense and less porous network produced after pressing at 200kN (96% porosity), followed by vacuum-filtered (VF) networks (33% porosity). The porosity (17%) was further decreased when the casting (CS) method was used, further producing a highly dense and compressed network. High water flux (180.8 ± 11 L/m2h) of pressed freeze-dried (PFD) followed by vacuum-filtered (VF) (11.4 ± 1.9 L/m2h) and casting CS (0.7 ± 0.01 L/m2h) were calculated using device. Furthermore, increased water flux (1.4 fold) of Experimental Paper Machine (XPM) based structures was reported in comparison with CS structures. Pore-sized distribution and surface area were measured using Hg porosimetry; they showed an average pore size of 16.5 μm for FD, followed by PFD (8.2 μm) structures. A 27-fold decrease in average pore-size was observed for CS structure in comparison with the FD structures. Highest tensile strength (87 ± 21 MPa) was recorded for CS structures, indicating a more highly compacted network formation compared to VF (82 ± 19 MPa) and PFD (1.6 ± 0.06 MPa). Furthermore, an attempt was made to upscale the VF structures using traditional paper making approach on XMP. Improved tensile strength (73 ± 11 MPa) in machine produced structures is due to alignment of fibers towards machine direction compared to cross directional (43 ± 9 MPa) fractured structures as shown in our Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Surface functionalization of MFC using enzyme (hexokinase) was performed to increase the adsorption efficiency towards ferric ions removal. All fabricated structures were further evaluated for Fe(iii) removal and it was summarized that charge densities of functional groups, produced ζ-potential and networking potential were dominating influential factors for adsorption fluctuation of ferric ions.

Bio-inspired and assembled fungal hyphae/carbon nanotubes aerogel for water-oil separation

Carbon nanotube (CNT)-based materials have attracted tremendous interest for their high performance in oil separation. However, the preparation of CNT based materials always require harmful and expensive chemicals. Here, a biological assembly route was applied to assemble CNTs onto a fungal hyphae (FH) to produce FH/CNTs composites, followed by pyrolysis to obtain a hydrophobic CNT based aerogel for oil separation, which is a more environmentally friendly process. The as-prepared FH/CNTs-800 aerogel (pyrolyzed at 800 °C) showed hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 143° and high specific surface area (1041.2 m² g^-1). The oil absorption results showed that the as-prepared FH/CNTs aerogels could absorb a wide range of oils with high absorption capacities ranging from 48 to 138 times their own weight. Furthermore, the oil-loaded aerogel was recycled through burning with little reduction in the oil absorption capacity. In addition, FH/CNTs-800 provided a high specific capacitance of 232 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 and maintained a capacity retention of 70.62% at 20 A g^-1. Therefore, this study offers a simple, low-cost and environmentally friendly bioassembly route for large-scale assembly of CNTs into macroscopic 3D hydrophobic aerogels for highly efficient water-oil separation.

Adsorption mechanism of hexavalent chromium onto layered double hydroxides-based adsorbents: A systematic in-depth review

An attempt has been made in this review to provide some insights into the possible adsorption mechanisms of hexavalent chromium onto layered double hydroxides-based adsorbents by critically examining the past and present literature. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanomaterials are typical dual-electronic adsorbents because they exhibit positively charged external surfaces and abundant interlayer anions. A high positive zeta potential value indicates that LDH has a high affinity to Cr(VI) anions in solution through electrostatic attraction. The host interlayer anions (i.e., Cl^-, NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, and CO₃^2-) provide a high anion exchange capacity (53-520 meq/100 g) which is expected to have an excellent exchangeable capacity to Cr(VI) oxyanions in water. Regarding the adsorption-coupled reduction mechanism, when Cr(VI) anions make contact with the electron-donor groups in the LDH, they are partly reduced to Cr(III) cations. The reduced Cr(III) cations are then adsorbed by LDH via numerous interactions, such as isomorphic substitution and complexation. Nonetheless, the adsorption-coupled reduction mechanism is greatly dependent on: (1) the nature of divalent and trivalent salts utilized in LDH preparation, and the types of interlayer anions (i.e., guest intercalated organic anions), and (3) the adsorption experiment conditions. The low Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area of LDH (1.80-179 m²/g) suggests that pore filling played an insignificant role in Cr(VI) adsorption. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of LDH (Q^o_max) toward Cr(VI) was significantly affected by the natures of used inorganic salts and synthetic methods of LDH. The Q^o_max values range from 16.3 mg/g to 726 mg/g. Almost all adsorption processes of Cr(VI) by LDH-based adsorbent occur spontaneously (ΔG° <0) and endothermically (ΔH° >0) and increase the randomness (ΔS° >0) in the system. Thus, LDH has much potential as a promising material that can effectively remove anion pollutants, especially Cr(VI) anions in industrial wastewater.

A Review on Biological Processes for Pharmaceuticals Wastes Abatement-A Growing Threat to Modern Society

Over the last decades, the production and consumption of pharmaceuticals and health care products grew manifold, allowing an increase in life expectancy and a better life quality for humans and animals, in general. However, the growth in pharmaceuticals production and consumption comes with an increase in waste production, which creates a number of challenges as well as opportunities for the waste management industries. The conventional current technologies used to treat effluents have shown to be inefficient to remove or just to reduce the concentrations of these types of pollutants to the legal limits. The present review provides a thorough state-of-the-art overview on the use of biological processes in the rehabilitation of ecosystems contaminated with the pharmaceutical compounds most commonly detected in the environment and eventually more studied by the scientific community. Among the different biological processes, special attention is given to biosorption and biodegradation.

Biosorption technology for removal of toxic metals: a review of commercial biosorbents and patents

In last decades, the biosorption process has become one of the main alternative treatment technologies for the removal of pollutants from dilute aqueous solution. Among these pollutants, toxic metals have drawn attention due to their negative effects in human body and food chain. Even though biosorption is considered a cost-effective and eco-friendly technology to remove toxic metals from dilute wastewaters, there are still obstacles that restrain its commercialization. For this reason, various scientific articles and patents have been published each year to make more effective and economical this technology. This review reports an overview of past achievements, current research of biosorption studies, and future trends for the development of the biosorption as sustainable cleaner technology. Mechanisms of metal uptake, recovery and biosorbent regeneration, process design, commercial application of biosorbents, and patents registered are presented. Finally, future aspects in biosorption research and suggestions for its application will be discussed.

Mechanically robust high flux graphene oxide - nanocellulose membranes for dye removal from water

Ultrathin graphene oxide (GO) layer was fabricated on cellulose nanofiber (CNF) membrane to achieve robust crosslinker free layered membrane with synergistic water flux and separation performance. Unlike pristine cellulosic or GO membranes, GO-CNF hybrid membranes exhibited significantly improved mechanical stability in both dry and wet states. All membranes showed negative surface zeta potential. GO: CNF membrane (1:100) exhibited significantly high water flux (18,123 ± 574 Lm^-2 h^-1 bar^-1); higher than that of CNF membrane or the hydrophilic commercial reference membrane with comparable pore structure (Nylon 66, 0.2 μm). We hypothyse that a unique surface structure of "standing inserted GO nanosheets" observed at low concentrations of GO contributes enormously to its ultrafast water permeability through creation of numerous water transport nanochannels. The aniosptropic layered membranes exhibited >90% rejection of positively and negatively charged dyes through a combination of electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interactions and molecular size exclusion. Construction of an ultrathin GO layer on CNF offers a unique and efficient way to prepare highly functional, economical and scalable water purification membranes having significant advantage with respect to flux, mechanical stability and rejection of dyes compared to isotropic membrane with GO nanosheets randomly dispersed in the cellulose nanofibrous network.

Efficient Removal of Cr(VI) from Water by Biochar and Activated Carbon Prepared through Hydrothermal Carbonization and Pyrolysis: Adsorption-Coupled Reduction Mechanism

Three carbonaceous porous materials (biochar and activated carbon) were developed from the Tectona grandis tree sawdust. The applied process of two-stage preparation included pre-treatment through hydrothermal carbonization at 190 °C and subsequent pyrolysis at 800 °C. Two chemical activating agents (K2CO3 and ZnCl2) were used to prepared activated carbons (K2CO3-AC and ZnCl2-AC), respectively. They were characterized by textural property, morphology, and surface element components and applied to remove Cr(VI) from solution at various solution pH values and initial Cr(VI) concentrations. Results showed that the textural parameters (SBET and VTotal) of the prepared material were 1757 m2/g and 1.027 cm3/g for Zn-Cl2-AC, 1013 m2/g and 0.418 cm3/g for K2CO3-AC, and 792 m2/g and 0.345 cm3/g for biochar. The adsorption process reached the highest efficiency at pH 3.0. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity indicated the decreasing order: ZnCl2-AC (127 mg/g) > K2CO3-AC (103 mg/g) > biochar (83.5 mg/g). The removal mechanism of Cr(V) from solution was regarded as an adsorption-coupled reduction, namely (1) partial reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) during the adsorption process and (2) adsorption of the Cr(VI) anions through electrostatic attraction and pore filling and the reduced Cr(III) cations through complexation, Cπ–cation interaction, cation exchange, and pore filing. Therefore, the prepared biochar and activated carbon can server as promising adsorbents to efficiently remove both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) from water.

Accumulation of NH4 + and NO3 - inside Biofilms of Natural Microbial Consortia: Implication on Nutrients Seasonal Dynamic in Aquatic Ecosystems

Microbial biofilms are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems. Inside the biofilm is the nutrient-rich microenvironment promoted by the accumulation of the nutrient ions such as NH4 + and NO3 - from surrounding water. The present study investigated the characteristics of NH4 + and NO3 - accumulation into the biofilm of natural microbial consortia collected from Lake Biwa, Japan. The results showed the following: (1) the concentrations of NH4 + and NO3 - inside the biofilm were much higher than those in the surrounding water; (2) the nutrient ion concentration inside the biofilm changed in synchrony with those in the surrounding water; (3) biofilm polymers have both positively and negatively charged sites; (4) electrostatic attractive interactions between the charged sites on biofilm polymers and oppositely charged ions outside the biofilm seem to play important roles in the accumulation of nutrient ions into the biofilm from the surrounding water; (5) the bacterial community structure differs between the biofilm and surrounding water. The present study revealed that the accumulation of nutrient ions into the biofilm indicates the removal of these ions from water outside the biofilm. According to the result of this study, accumulation of ions such as NH4 + and NO3 - into the biofilm of natural microbial consortia may have implications on nutrients seasonal dynamic in aquatic ecosystems.

Technologies applicable to the removal of heavy metals from landfill leachate

This article presents a review of the main physical, chemical, electrochemical, and biological technologies used for treating heavy metals in the wastewater of industrial processes and in synthetic aqueous solutions which could be applied to leachate from landfills. This paper outlines the generalities, operating principles, and modifications made to the technologies described. It discusses and assesses which of these have better removal rates and higher levels of efficiency in minimizing the heavy metal concentrations contained in leachates, such as mercury, chromium, lead, nickel, and copper among others. The first part of the document presents the so-called conventional technologies, such as chemical, physical, and electrochemical treatment. These have been used to treat different wastewater, especially industrial waste, operating adequately from the technical topic, but with high costs and the secondary products' production. The second part exposes biological treatments tend to be most widely used due to their versatility, effectiveness, and low cost, when compared with traditional technologies. It is important to note that there is no single treatment and that each of the technologies reviewed has different heavy metal decontamination rates. All technologies search to reduce concentrations of heavy metals to values that are safe for the natural resources where they are discharged or disposed, thereby complying with the regulatory limits regulated in each of the regions.

Concurrent adsorption and micro-electrolysis of Cr(VI) by nanoscale zerovalent iron/biochar/Ca-alginate composite

This study introduced a new approach for simultaneously enhancing Cr(VI) removal performance and mitigating release of dissolved Fe during nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-mediated reactions. After entrapping nZVI-impregnated biochar (BC) in the matrix of calcium-alginate (CA) bead, the physicochemical characterization of nZVI/BC/CA composites revealed that nZVI/BC particles were embedded inside CA having a spherical shape and several cracks on its outer layer. The multi-functionality of nZVI/BC/CA composites consisting of reductant (nZVI), porous adsorbent (BC), and external screening layer (CA) enhanced the removal of Cr(VI) with the maximum adsorption capacity of 86.4 mg/g (based on the Langmuir isotherm) and little release of dissolved Fe. With the XPS analysis and fitting results of kinetics (pseudo second order) and isotherms (Redlich-Peterson model), plausible removal mechanisms of Cr(VI) were simultaneous adsorption and micro-electrolysis reactions by nZVI/BC/CA composites. The practical applicability of nZVI/BC/CA composites was further demonstrated through the fixed-bed column experiments. These results provide new insights into the design of high-performance engineered biochar for wastewater treatment.

Copper biosorption from an aqueous solution by the dead biomass of Penicillium ochrochloron

The present study investigated the effect of contact time, the initial concentration of metal ions, and the biomass dose on the Cu(II) biosorption from an aqueous solution using dead biomass of filamentous fungus Penicillium ochrochloron, which was isolated at the Sossego mine, a copper-contaminated site located in Canaã dos Carajás city, Brazil. The Cu(II) biosorption started rapidly and increased gradually until the equilibrium was reached at 20 min. The Cu(II) uptake decreased as the initial Cu(II) concentration increased, reaching the saturation at 200 mg/L. The Cu(II) biosorption was considerably higher using 0.2 g than 0.5 g of the biomass in 50 mL of solution. The average biosorption capacity of Cu(II) was 7.53 mg/g and the maximum Cu(II) removal 75.0%. The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models adequately described the adsorption data. Our results evidenced that the dead biomass of P. ochrochloron has a great potential as a biosorbent to remove copper from an aqueous solution. Therefore, it could be explored for the development of the environmental recovery process.

Effect of Vicia faba L. var. minor and Sulla coronaria (L.) Medik associated with plant growth-promoting bacteria on lettuce cropping system and heavy metal phytoremediation under field conditions

Researches involving the use of association between legumes and PGPBs (plant growth-promoting bacteria) in heavy metal phytoremediation process were mainly performed for soils highly contaminated. However, even in agriculture soils, with moderate or low contamination levels, plants can accumulate high rates of heavy metals. So, food chain contamination by these metals presents a real threat to animal and human health. This work aimed to evaluate the use of two legumes/PGPB symbioses; Vicia faba var. minor and Sulla coronaria have been inoculated with specific heavy metal-resistant inocula in a crop rotation system with Lactuca sativa as a following crop, in order to assess their effects on soil fertility, lettuce yield, and heavy metal content. Our results showed that legume inoculation significantly enhanced their biomass production, nitrogen and phosphorus content. The use of our symbioses as green manure before lettuce cultivation, as a rotation cropping system, affected positively soil fertility. In fact, we recorded a higher organic matter content, with rapid decomposition in the soil of inoculated plots. Besides, results demonstrated a greater nitrogen and phosphorus content in this soil, especially in the plot cultivated with inoculated V. faba var. minor. The improvement of soil fertility enhanced lettuce yield and its nitrogen and phosphorus content. Moreover, inoculated legumes extracted and accumulated more heavy metals than non-inoculated legumes. Our symbioses play the role of organic trap for heavy metals, making them unavailable for following crops. These facts were supported by lettuce heavy metal content, showing a significant decrease in metal accumulation, mainly zinc and cadmium, in edible parts. Results showed the usefulness of the studied symbioses, as a main part of a rotation system with lettuce. Our symbioses can be suggested for agriculture soil phytoremediation, aiming to enhance non-legume crop yield and limit heavy metal translocation to food chain.

The effect of pH on the sorption capacity of vermiculite towards cadmium and nickel was tested in batch systems and it was shown that the sorption percentages increase with an increase in the mass of vermiculite and with an increase in the initial pH. Maximum sorption percentages were obtained for a pH of 8 and 4 g of vermiculite (86.5% for Cd²⁺ and 86.1% for Ni²⁺, for solutions with 100 mg/L of metal). As a consequence, it was possible to establish a range of optimal pH for biosorption processes, by combining the so determined optimal sorption pH of vermiculite with the optimal growth pH of Streptococcus equisimilis, a bacterium used to treat contaminated water. Pilot-scale experiments with a S. equisimilis biofilm supported on vermiculite were conducted in closed-loop conditions, aiming to treat large volumes of diethylketone aqueous solutions, eventually containing Cd²⁺ or Ni²⁺. The excellent capacity of this joint system to simultaneously biodegrade diethylketone and biosorb Cd²⁺ or Ni²⁺was proved. The removal percentage and the uptake increase through time, even with the replacement of the initial solution by new ones. The breakthrough curves that best describe the results achieved for Cd²⁺ and Ni²⁺ are respectively the Adams-Bohart and the Yoon and Nelson model.

Performance of aquatic weed - Waste Myriophyllum spicatum immobilized in alginate beads for the removal of Pb(II)

A new biosorbent - alginate encapsulated with Myriophyllum spicatum - MsA was investigated for lead ions removal. This biosorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), zeta potential, X ray Diffraction (XRD) and size distribution analysis. FT-IR analysis demonstrated that the lead ions sequestration mechanism included ion exchange and lead complexation with the carboxyl, carbonyl and hydroxyl groups in MsA. In order to better understand the mechanisms of the binding of Pb(II) on immobilized M. spicatum beads, 3 reaction and one diffusion based kinetic models were applied on kinetic data removal lead ions on three materials: M. spicatum, Ca-alginate and MsA. Myriophyllum spicatum encapsulated with alginate - MsA have higher adsorption capacity than M. spicatum. Among examined six isotherms Redlich-Peterson and the Langmuir isotherm model exhibited the best fit to the experimental data, with capacities ranging from 230 to 268.7 mg/g. Among the various tested desorption agents, nitric acid has proven to be the best. The obtained results suggest that the immobilized M. spicatum biosorbent holds great potential for lead wastewater treatment applications.

Plant tannin immobilized Fe3O4@SiO2 microspheres: A novel and green magnetic bio-sorbent with superior adsorption capacities for gold and palladium

In this paper, a new core-shell nanostructured magnetic bio-based composite was prepared by immobilizing persimmon tannin (PT) onto Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ microspheres, and the as designed Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PT was utilized for adsorptive recovery of Au(III) and Pd(II). The preparation, morphology, composition and magnetic property of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PT were characterized. Adsorption parameters of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PT towards Au(III) and Pd(II) including initial pH, reaction time, initial concentration of metal ions, effect of acidity and interference of coexisting metal ions were investigated. It is sufficiently confirmed that silica was coated on Fe₃O₄ and persimmon tannin was immobilized on aminated Fe₃O₄@SiO₂. The thickness of silica and loaded persimmon tannin are around 18 nm and 14 nm, respectively. With only 1.00 wt% of persimmon tannin, however, the maximum adsorption capacities of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PT for Au(III) and Pd(II) were as high as 917.43 and 196.46 mg·g^-1, respectively. In addition, after adsorption of Au(III) and Pd(II), the magnetization saturation values (Ms) of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PT were high enough to guarantee efficient magnetic seperation. Metallic gold could be facilely recovered from wastewaters containing Au(III).

Optimization of heavy metal biosorption onto freshwater algae (Chlorella coloniales) using response surface methodology (RSM)

In this study, the interaction of the initial metal concentration, time of reaction and Chlorella coloniales algae dose were taken for the biosorption of Cr, Cd, Co, Fe and As from aqueous solutions using the Box-Behnken design. The regression equation coefficients were calculated and the data confirmed the validity of second-order polynomial equation for the removal of Cr, Cd, Co, Fe and As with Chlorella coloniales algae. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a high coefficient of determination value (R²) for Cr, Cd, Co, Fe, and As, being respectively 0.998, 0.998, 0.995, 0.998 and 0.994. Heavy metal biosorption increased with the increase in time of reaction from 30 h to 100 h then smoothly steadily decreased. The biosorption capacity of Chlorella coloniales increased when initial Cd concentration was increased from 5 to 12 mg/L, and then no change was seen with further increasing in initial Cd concentration. At low concentrations of heavy metal, Chlorella coloniales showed its effectiveness for Cr, Co, Fe and As bioaccumulation, but at high concentrations of heavy metal bioaccumulation efficiency decreased Under optimal value of process parameters, maximum efficiencies for the removal of Cr, Cd, Co, Fe, and As were 97.8, 97.05, 95.15, 98.6 and 96.5% respectively. The results of the present study suggest that use of C. Coloniales algae can be a good alternative to the current expensive methods of removing heavy metals from aqueous solution.

Biomineralization and Bioaccumulation of Europium by a Thermophilic Metal Resistant Bacterium

Rare earth metals are widely used in the production of many modern technologies. However, there is concern that supply cannot meet the growing demand in the near future. The extraction from low-grade sources such as geothermal fluids could contribute to address the increasing demand for these compounds. Here we investigated the interaction and eventual bioaccumulation of europium (Eu) by a thermophilic bacterium, Thermus scotoductus SA-01. We demonstrated that this bacterial strain can survive in high levels (up to 1 mM) of Eu, which is hundred times higher than typical concentrations found in the environment. Furthermore, Eu seems to stimulate the growth of T. scotoductus SA-01 at low (0.01-0.1 mM) concentrations. We also found, using TEM-EDX analysis, that the bacterium can accumulate Eu both intracellularly and extracellularly. FT-IR results confirmed that carbonyl and carboxyl groups were involved in the biosorption of Eu. Infrared and HR-XPS analysis demonstrated that Eu can be biomineralized by T. scotoductus SA-01 as Eu2(CO3)3. This suggests that T. scotoductus SA-01 can potentially be used for the biorecovery of rare earth metals from geothermal fluids.

Biotechnological strategies for the recovery of valuable and critical raw materials from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) - A review

Critical raw materials (CRMs) are essential in the development of novel high-tech applications. They are essential in sustainable materials and green technologies, including renewable energy, emissionfree electric vehicles and energy-efficient lighting. However, the sustainable supply of CRMs is a major concern. Recycling end-of-life devices is an integral element of the CRMs supply policy of many countries. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is an important secondary source of CRMs. Currently, pyrometallurgical processes are used to recycle metals from WEEE. These processes are deemed imperfect, energy-intensive and non-selective towards CRMs. Biotechnologies are a promising alternative to the current industrial best available technologies (BAT). In this review, we present the current frontiers in CRMs recovery from WEEE using biotechnology, the biochemical fundamentals of these bio-based technologies and discuss recent research and development (R&D) activities. These technologies encompass biologically induced leaching (bioleaching) from various matrices,biomass-induced sorption (biosorption), and bioelectrochemical systems (BES).

Design of ultrathin hybrid membranes with improved retention efficiency of molecular dyes

Nanocellulose–graphene oxide ultrathin coatings for water purification membranes with excellent swelling resistance, permeability and dyes retention are presented.

Mechanisms of strontium's adsorption by Saccharomyces cerevisiae: Contribution of surface and intracellular uptakes

The objective of this work was to explore the mechanisms participating in strontium sorption by living Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae). The location of strontium adsorbed by S. cerevisiae was studied by our plasmolysis treatment. The contribution of physical and chemical mechanisms was determined quantitatively by desorption and blockage of functional groups. Moreover, our results indicated that bioaccumulation also played a major role in biosorption by living cells. Thus, supplementary methods including 2-DE (two-dimensional electrophoresis) and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Tandem Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-TOF) were employed to analyze the different proteins. The subsequent desorption % of Sr²⁺ by Distilled Water (DW), NH₄NO₃ and EDTA-Na₂ from Sr²⁺ loaded sorbents indicated a minor role for physical adsorption, while ion exchange and complexation were responsible for approximately 20% and 40%. Specific blockage of functional groups revealed that carboxyl and amine groups played an important role in Sr²⁺ binding to the living S. cerevisiae. From our MALDI-TOF-TOF results, we concluded that 38 proteins showed up-regulated expression profiles and 11 proteins showed down-regulated after biosorption. Moreover, proteins belong to: phagocytic function (Act1p); ion channel (S-adenosylmethionine synthase); glycolysis (Tubulin) may directly involve in strontium bioaccumulation. In conclusion, the present work indicates that the strontium sorption mechanism by living S. cerevisiae is complicated including ion-exchange along with complexation as the main mechanism, whereas the other mechanisms such as physical adsorption play a minor contribution. Metabolically-dependent proteins may play an important role in bioaccumulation.

Tree gum-based renewable materials: Sustainable applications in nanotechnology, biomedical and environmental fields

The prospective uses of tree gum polysaccharides and their nanostructures in various aspects of food, water, energy, biotechnology, environment and medicine industries, have garnered a great deal of attention recently. In addition to extensive applications of tree gums in food, there are substantial non-food applications of these commercial gums, which have gained widespread attention due to their availability, structural diversity and remarkable properties as 'green' bio-based renewable materials. Tree gums are obtainable as natural polysaccharides from various tree genera possessing exceptional properties, including their renewable, biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic nature and their ability to undergo easy chemical modifications. This review focuses on non-food applications of several important commercially available gums (arabic, karaya, tragacanth, ghatti and kondagogu) for the greener synthesis and stabilization of metal/metal oxide NPs, production of electrospun fibers, environmental bioremediation, bio-catalysis, biosensors, coordination complexes of metal-hydrogels, and for antimicrobial and biomedical applications. Furthermore, polysaccharides acquired from botanical, seaweed, animal, and microbial origins are briefly compared with the characteristics of tree gum exudates.

Heavy Metal Removal by Bioaccumulation Using Genetically Engineered Microorganisms

Wastewater effluents from mines and metal refineries are often contaminated with heavy metal ions, so they pose hazards to human and environmental health. Conventional technologies to remove heavy metal ions are well-established, but the most popular methods have drawbacks: chemical precipitation generates sludge waste, and activated carbon and ion exchange resins are made from unsustainable non-renewable resources. Using microbial biomass as the platform for heavy metal ion removal is an alternative method. Specifically, bioaccumulation is a natural biological phenomenon where microorganisms use proteins to uptake and sequester metal ions in the intracellular space to utilize in cellular processes (e.g., enzyme catalysis, signaling, stabilizing charges on biomolecules). Recombinant expression of these import-storage systems in genetically engineered microorganisms allows for enhanced uptake and sequestration of heavy metal ions. This has been studied for over two decades for bioremediative applications, but successful translation to industrial-scale processes is virtually non-existent. Meanwhile, demands for metal resources are increasing while discovery rates to supply primary grade ores are not. This review re-thinks how bioaccumulation can be used and proposes that it can be developed for bioextractive applications-the removal and recovery of heavy metal ions for downstream purification and refining, rather than disposal. This review consolidates previously tested import-storage systems into a biochemical framework and highlights efforts to overcome obstacles that limit industrial feasibility, thereby identifying gaps in knowledge and potential avenues of research in bioaccumulation.
