Membrane fouling caused by biological foams in a submerged membrane bioreactor: Mechanism insights

Flame-retardant ethylene vinyl acetate composite materials by combining additions of aluminum hydroxide and melamine cyanurate: Preparation and characteristic evaluations

There is a great interest to develop efficient fire-resistant materials. While ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is a widely used material, it suffers from the problem of relatively high inflammability which seriously hinders its usage as the product material with a high flame-retardant requirement. In this study, a strategy to combine aluminum hydroxide (ATH) and melamine cyanurate (MCA) with EVA was proposed to prepare the EVA composite materials with high flame resistance. It was found that slight addition of MCA could increase the lubricity of EVA and raise the compatibility between EVA and ATH. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the thermal stability of EVA was improved via adding MCA, which was evidenced by the delayed thermal decomposition temperature. Moreover, the combustion results indicated that the EVA composite with 60 parts per hundred (phr) ATH and 40 phr MCA addition (EVA-60-40) displayed the optimal isolated layer favoring the fire resistance. In addition, the highest limiting oxygen index (LOI) value (27.5%) and V-0 rating of the EVA-60-40 as compared with other components indicated its incombustible nature. These results suggested the synergetic effect of ATH and MCA additions, the high efficiency of the proposed strategy and the wide application prospect of the produced EVA-ATH-MCA composite materials.

Prepared PANI@nano hollow carbon sphere adsorbents with lappaceum shell like structure for high efficiency removal of hexavalent chromium

Herein, the novel polyaniline@nano hollow carbon sphere (PANI@NHCS) adsorbents with different mass of NHCS were prepared by in-situ polymerization method. The microstructure of obtained PANI@NHCS-10, PANI@NHCS-20, PANI@NHCS-30 and PANI@NHCS-40 samples were observed through both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which showed that the PANI@NHCS-30 possessed hollow structure like lappaceum shell. Then, the performance of obtained PANI@NHCS-30 was studied for removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from waste water. With the help of unique hollow structure and reduction ability of PANI@NHCS-30, the Cr(VI) was fleetly adsorbed and then reduced to less toxic Cr(III). The maximum adsorption capacity was 250.0 mg/g for PANI@NHCS-30 under the optimal condition. Moreover, the effects of initial Cr(VI) concentration, solution pH and different ions on the adsorption performance were investigated in detail. Importantly, the PANI@NHCS-30 still shows superb adsorption ability after five cycles, which suggests its satisfactory reusability ability. The accumulated data revealed the crucial role of PANI and hollow structure co-promoting effect on Cr(VI) reduction reactions over PANI@NHCS-30, which could be applied to the practical use.

Combined strategy of blending and surface modification as an effective route to prepare antifouling ultrafiltration membranes

Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes blended with hydrophilic nanomaterials usually exhibit preferable overall performance including the membrane permeability and antifouling capability. However, the improvement in antifouling performance may be not outstanding due to the small amount of nanomaterial distributed near the membrane surface and the limited improvement in membrane hydrophilicity. Notably, excess addition of nanomaterials may lead to the decline in membrane permeability. In order to solve the above problem, we integrated the strategy of blending and surface modification to construct novel hybrid UF membranes. Novel nanohybrid was prepared via tannic acid (TA) coating on hydroxyapatite nanotubes (HANTs) and the subsequent grafting of zwitterionic polyethylenimine (ZPEI). The prepared nanohybrid (HANTs@TA-ZPEI) was incorporated with the polysulfone containing tertiary amine groups to fabricate hybrid membranes via the solution blending and the subsequent immersion-precipitation phase inversion process. Then the matrix was modified with zwitterions via the reaction of tertiary amine group with 1, 3-propane sultone. UF tests were conducted using the bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) as the representative foulants. Results showed that both the permeability and the antifouling performance of the membranes achieved favorable promotion. Thereinto, the water flux of M-B0.4-Z membrane (pre blended with 0.4 wt% HANTs@TA-ZPEI in the casting solution and post-surface modified) exhibited 2.6 times that of the pristine membrane and the flux recovery ratio (FRR) for BSA and HA attained 93.4% and 96.1%, respectively. By the combination of blending and surface modification, both the membrane permeability and fouling resistant properties could attain remarkable promotion, which exerted the advantages of two methods and made up the deficiency of single blending method.

The biological performance of a novel microalgal-bacterial membrane photobioreactor: Effects of HRT and N/P ratio

A microalgal-bacterial membrane photobioreactor (MB-MPBR) was developed for simultaneous COD and nutrients (N and P) removals from synthetic municipal wastewater in a single stage for a long-term operation over 350 days. The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and N/P ratio on the biological performance were systematically evaluated for the first time. The results showed that a lower N/P ratio (3.9:1) and shorter HRT (2 d) promoted more biomass production, as compared to a high HRT (3 d) and a high N/P ratio (9.7:1). The highest biomass concentration (2.55 ± 0.14 g L^-1) and productivity (127.5 mg L^-1·d^-1) were achieved at N/P ratio of 3.9:1 and HRT of 2 d due to the highest nitrogen and phosphorus loadings under such conditions. A COD and ammonia-N removal efficiency of over 96% and 99%, respectively, were achieved regardless of HRTs and N/P ratios. In the absence of nitrogen or phosphorus deficiency, shorter HRT (2 d) yielded a higher nitrogen and phosphorus uptake but lower removal efficiency. In addition, the imbalance N/P ratio (9.7:1) would decrease nitrogen or phosphorus removal. Overall, the results suggested that it was feasible to simultaneously achieve complete or high removal of COD, nitrogen, and phosphorous in MB-MPBR under the appropriate conditions. This study demonstrated for the first time that MB-MPBR is a promising technology that could achieve a high-quality effluent meeting the discharge standards of COD and nutrients in one single step.

Insight into the influence of humic acid and sodium alginate fractions on membrane fouling in coagulation-ultrafiltration combined system

Membrane fouling has become the one of main obstacles for the widespread application of membrane technology in water treatment processes. Coagulation as pretreatment is proven to be effective for the alleviation of membrane fouling. In this study, the influence of humic acid (HA)/sodium alginate (SA) fractions in the structure and resistance of cake layer on the membrane surface was investigated. The presence of SA at an appropriate fraction could facilitate the formation of large and loosely branched flocs and thereby form a more permeable cake layer on the membrane surface due to good bridging and charge neutralization abilities of SA molecules. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed for monitoring the dynamic formation process of cake layer under different HA/SA fractions. The cake layer with a higher thickness was observed to be rapidly formed on the membrane surface at the presence of SA in water. According to the theoretical analysis, the membrane fouling in coagulation-ultrafiltration (UF) combined system demonstrated to be highly dependent on the size and intra-porosity of flocs. The fractal dimension of flocs might have an impact on the resistance of cake layer through affecting the porosity of aggregated flocs. The SA molecules could be used as the coagulant aid for effective alleviation of membrane fouling and the improvement of filtration performance in a coagulation-UF combined system.

Performance evaluation of conventional membrane bioreactor and moving bed membrane bioreactor for synthetic textile wastewater treatment

In this study, conventional membrane bioreactor (MBR) and moving bed-membrane bioreactor (MB-MBR) processes were compared in synthetic textile wastewater treatment. For this purpose, the bioreactors were operated as a conventional MBR, an MB-MBR with a biocarrier filling ratio of 20 % and an MB-MBR with a biocarrier filling ratio of 10 %, respectively. In the conventional MBR operation, 93.1 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 87.1 % color (Reactive Red 390) removal efficiencies were obtained. In both MB-MBR operations, almost equal COD and color removal efficiencies were found as 98.5 % and 89.5 %, respectively. Moreover, offline physical and chemical membrane cleaning processes were applied every other day and every 15 days throughout the conventional MBR operation, respectively, while no physical or chemical membrane cleaning was required during both MB-MBR operations. Furthermore, lower polysaccharide concentrations of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and floc sizes of sludge and higher zeta potential of sludge were determined in MB-MBR. Considering the obtained results, it may be stated that the MB-MBR process is an attractive treatment technology for reducing membrane fouling propensity for treatment of textile wastewater.

Clarification of 1,3-Propanediol Fermentation Broths by Using a Ceramic Fine UF Membrane

This work examined the use of a ceramic fine ultrafiltration (UF) membrane for the pre-treatment of 1,3-propanodiol (1,3-PD) fermentation broths. It has been demonstrated that the membrane used provides obtaining a high-quality, sterile permeate, which can be sequentially separated by other processes such as nanofiltration (NF) and membrane distillation (MD). Special attention was paid to the impact of the operational parameters on the membrane performance. The series of UF experiments under transmembrane pressure (TMP) from 0.1 to 0.4 MPa and feed flow rate (Q) from 200 to 400 dm3/h were performed. Moreover, the impact of the feed pH, in the range from 5 to 10, on the flux was investigated. It has been demonstrated that for fine UF, increasing the TMP is beneficial, and TMP equal to 0.4 MPa and Q of 400 dm3/h ensure the highest flux and its long-term stability. It has been shown that in terms of process efficiency, the most favorable pH of the broths is equal to 9.4. An effective and simple method of membrane cleaning was presented. Finally, the resistance-in-series model was applied to describe resistances that cause flux decline. Results obtained in this study can assist in improving the cost-effectiveness of the UF process of 1,3-PD fermentation broths.

Surface activation towards manganese dioxide nanosheet arrays via plasma engineering as cathode and anode for efficient water splitting

Developing high-efficiency, low-cost electrocatalysts for water splitting is important but challenging. Two-dimensional nanosheet manganese dioxide (MnO₂) arrays are promising candidates for the design and development of advanced catalysts because of their large surface area. Here, a feasible solution to improve the catalytic activity of MnO₂ materials via decorating the active sites on the surface is proposed. With the help of plasma engineering, we successfully enabled surface activity of the MnO₂ nanosheets by decorating P or Fe species together with rich vacancies on the surface. The decorated P (P-MnO₂) or Fe (Fe-MnO₂) species were highly beneficial for the absorption of protons and OH^- respectively, and rich oxygen vacancies induced the formation of stable Mn³⁺, which contributed to electron and charge transfer. Thus, increased electrochemically active specific areas, accelerated charge transfer, and a proper surface electronic structure could be achieved. On the basis of this activation strategy, the fabricated P-MnO₂ and Fe-MnO₂ showed excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions. To our knowledge, the performance of P-MnO₂ and Fe-MnO₂ outperformed most MnO₂-based electrocatalysts in the field of electrocatalytic water splitting. Surface activation of two-dimensional MnO₂ materials by decorating active species via plasma treatment can provide a feasible route for modulating the performance of earth-abundant electrocatalysts for practical applications.

In-situ membrane fouling control by electrooxidation and microbial community in membrane electro-bioreactor treating aquaculture seawater

Ammonia and nitrite in aquaculture recirculating seawater need to be strictly controlled to avoid deleterious effects on aquatic organisms. However, traditional biological approach can hardly meet the standard due to the short hydraulic retention time (HRT) and nitrite accumulation. A Membrane Electro-Bioreactor (MEBR) was developed for ammonia removal enhancement and in-situ electrochemical membrane fouling mitigation. The fouling mechanism was first found to proceed via the standard filtration model. The flux decrease was mainly caused by an internal pore clogging phenomenon. Membrane fouling resistance was enhanced by increasing anode potential from 0 to 1.4 V vs. SCE (Saturated Calomel Electrode). The ammonia removal rate in the MEBR was above 95% (HRT: 2 h, after day-13) and membrane fouling was mitigated that operation duration was extended by 71.4%. Higher total proportion of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes and Actinobacteria was obtained in the MEBR, suggesting higher nitrification and nitrogen removal potentials.

Applications of tannic acid in membrane technologies: A review

Today, membrane technologies play a big role in chemical industry, especially in separation engineering. Tannic acid, one of the most famous polyphenols, has attracted widespread interest in membrane society. In the past several years, researches on the applications of tannic acid in membrane technologies have grown rapidly. However, there has been lack of a comprehensive review for now. Here, we summarize the recent developments in this field for the first time. We comb the history of tannic acid and introduce the properties of tannic acid firstly, and then we turn our focus onto the applications of membrane surface modification, interlayers and selective layers construction and mixed matrix membrane development. In those previous works, tannic acid has been demonstrated to be capable of making a great contribution to the membrane science and technology. Especially in membrane surface/interface engineering (such as the construction of superhydrophilic and antifouling surfaces and polymer/nanoparticle interfaces with high compatibility) and development of thin film composite membranes with high permselectivity (such as developing thin film composite membranes with ultrahigh flux and high rejection), tannic acid can play a positive and great role. Despite this, there are still many critical challenges lying ahead. We believe that more exciting progress will be made in addressing these challenges in the future.

An Efficient Method to Determine Membrane Molecular Weight Cut-Off Using Fluorescent Silica Nanoparticles

Membrane processes have revolutionized many industries because they are more energy and environmentally friendly than other separation techniques. This initial selection of the membrane for any application is based on its Molecular Weight Cut-Off (MWCO). However, there is a lack of a quantitative, liable, and rapid method to determine the MWCO of the membrane. In this study, a methodology to determine the MWCO, based on the retention of fluorescent silica nanoparticles (NPs), is presented. Optimized experimental conditions (Transmembrane pressure, filtration duration, suspension concentration, etc.) have been performed on different membranes MWCO. Filtrations with suspension of fluorescent NPs of different diameters 70, 100, 200 and 300 nm have been examined. The NPs sizes were selected to cover a wide range in order to study NPs diameters larger, close to, and smaller than the membrane pore size. A particle tracking analysis with a nanosight allows us to calculate the retention curves at all times. The retention rate curves were shifted over the filtration process at different times due to the fouling. The mechanism of fouling of the retained NPs explains the determined value of the MWCO. The reliability of this methodology, which presents a rapid quantitative way to determine the MWCO, is in good agreement with the value given by the manufacturer. In addition, this methodology gives access to the retention curve and makes it possible to determine the MWCO as a function of the desired retention rate.

Performance Evaluation of Tight Ultrafiltration Membrane Systems at Pilot Scale for Agave Fructans Fractionation and Purification

Ceramic and polymeric membrane systems were compared at the pilot scale for separating agave fructans into different molecular weight fractions that help to diversify them into more specific industrial applications. The effect of the transmembrane pressure of ultrafiltration performance was evaluated through hydraulic permeability, permeate flux and rejection coefficients, using the same operating conditions such as temperature, feed concentration and the molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of membranes. The fouling phenomenon and the global yield of the process were evaluated in concentration mode. A size distribution analysis of agave fructans is presented and grouped by molecular weight in different fractions. Great differences were found between both systems, since rejection coefficients of 68.6% and 100% for fructans with degrees of polymerization (DP) > 10, 36.3% and 99.3% for fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and 21.4% and 34.2% for mono-disaccharides were obtained for ceramic and polymeric membrane systems, respectively. Thus, ceramic membranes are better for use in the fractionation process since they reached a purity of 42.2% of FOS with a yield of 40.1% in the permeate and 78.23% for fructans with DP > 10 and a yield of 70% in the retentate. Polymeric membranes make for an efficient fructan purification process, eliminating only mono-disaccharides, and reaching a 97.7% purity (considering both fructan fractions) with a yield of 64.3% in the retentate.

Micellar-Enhanced Ultrafiltration Using a Plant-Derived Surfactant for Dye Separation in Wastewater Treatment

Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is one of several membrane methods used for the removal of trace organic pollutants from aqueous streams. In this process, a surfactant is added to a polluted aqueous solution at a concentration higher than its critical micelle concentration (CMC). Unlike synthetic surfactants, natural surfactants, from plants such as the saponin, while ecologically adaptable as surfactants in MEUF systems, are also biodegradable, renewable, and environmentally safe. This study applied Sapindus rarak extract as the natural surfactant in MEUF for Remazol dye separation. It was found that the presence of Sapindus rarak extract increased separation of Remazol red and blue dyes by up to 97.02% and 99.42%, respectively. However, the addition of surfactant decreased permeate fluxes due to membrane fouling and concentration polarization. In addition, loading micelle (Lm), representing the performance of the surfactant micelle for dye separation, as well as the blocking mechanism, was investigated. Lm was found to be in the range of 0.002-0.068 mM dyes/mM saponin. Ultrafiltration blocking mechanisms, as confirmed by the Hermia model, were: standard blocking, for cases without the addition of surfactant; cake formation, for cases with surfactant below the CMC; and complete blocking, for cases with surfactant above the CMC.

Photoelectrical properties of graphene/doped GeSn vertical heterostructures

GeSn is a group IV alloy material with a narrow bandgap, making it favorable for applications in sensing and imaging. However, strong surface carrier recombination is a limiting factor. To overcome this, we investigate the broadband photoelectrical properties of graphene integrated with doped GeSn, from the visible to the near infrared. It is found that photo-generated carriers can be separated and transported with a higher efficiency by the introduction of the graphene layer. Considering two contrasting arrangements of graphene on p-type and n-type GeSn films, photocurrents were suppressed in graphene/p-type GeSn heterostructures but enhanced in graphene/n-type GeSn heterostructures when compared with control samples without graphene. Moreover, the enhancement (suppression) factor increases with excitation wavelength but decreases with laser power. An enhancement factor of 4 is achieved for an excitation wavelength of 1064 nm. Compared with previous studies, it is found that our graphene/n-type GeSn based photodetectors provide a much wider photodetection range, from 532 nm to 1832 nm, and maintain comparable responsivity. Our experimental findings highlight the importance of the induced bending profile on the charge separation and provides a way to design high performance broadband photodetectors.

The photoelectrical properties of graphene integrated with doped GeSn have been investigated and a high performance broadband photodetection can be achieved by integration of graphene with n-type GeSn.
