Highly Reliable Textile-Type Memristor by Designing Aligned Nanochannels

Information-processing devices are the core components of modern electronics. Integrating them into textiles is the indispensable demand for electronic textiles to form close-loop functional systems. Memristors with crossbar configuration are regarded as promising building blocks to design woven information-processing devices that seamlessly unify with textiles. However, the memristors always suffer from severe temporal and spatial variations due to the random growth of conductive filaments during filamentary switching processes. Here, inspired by the ion nanochannels across synaptic membranes, a highly reliable textile-type memristor made of Pt/CuZnS memristive fiber with aligned nanochannels, showing small set voltage variation (<5.6%) under ultralow set voltage (≈0.089 V), high on/off ratio (≈106 ), and low power consumption (0.1 nW), is reported. Experimental evidence indicate that nanochannels with abundant active S defects can anchor silver ions and confine their migrations to form orderly and efficient conductive filaments. Such memristive performances enable the resultant textile-type memristor array to have high device-to-device uniformity and process complex physiological data like brainwave signals with high recognition accuracy (95%). The textile-type memristor arrays are mechanically durable to withstand hundreds of bending and sliding deformations, and seamlessly unified with sensing, power-supplying, and displaying textiles/fibers to form all-textile integrated electronic systems for new generation human-machine interactions.

Optimizing the luminescence efficiency of an europium (Eu3+) doped SrY2O4 phosphor for flexible display and lighting applications

This research paper reports the synthesis and luminescence study of an Eu³⁺ activated SrY₂O₄ phosphor prepared by a modified solid-state reaction method with varying concentrations of Eu³⁺ ions (0.1-2.5 mol%). X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the orthorhombic structure and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) methods were used to analyse the produced phosphors. Photoluminescence emission and excitation spectra were recorded for varying concentrations of Eu³⁺ ions, and an optimum concentration of 2.0 mol% was found to produce the highest intensity. Under 254 nm excitation the emission peaks were found to be at 580 nm, 590 nm, 611 nm and 619 nm, corresponding to transitions at ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₀, ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₁, and ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₂ respectively. Because of Eu³⁺ inherent luminosity, these emission peaks indicate radiative transitions between excited states of ions, making them useful for developing white light-emitting phosphors for optoelectronic and flexible display applications. The 1931 CIE (x, y) chromaticity coordinates were calculated from the photoluminescence emission spectra and found to be near white light emission, indicating the potential application of the prepared phosphor for light emitting diodes (white component). TL glow curve analysis was also performed for various concentrations of doping ions and UV exposure times, and a single broad peak was observed at 187 °C. Using the computerised glow curve deconvolution (CGCD) method, kinetic parameters were computed.

Highly Air-Stable, Flexible, and Water-Resistive 2D Titanium Carbide MXene-Based RGB Organic Light-Emitting Diode Displays for Transparent Free-Form Electronics

Flexible see-through displays are considered to be the next generation smart display, providing improved information flow, safety, situational awareness, and overall user experience in smart windows, automotive displays, glass-form biomedical displays, and augmented reality systems. 2D titanium carbides (MXenes) are promising material as electrodes of the transparent and flexible displays due to their high transparency, metallic conductivity, and flexibility. However, current MXene-based devices have insufficient air stability and lack engineering schemes to develop matrix-addressable display forms with sufficient pixels to display information. Here, we develop an ultraflexible and environmentally stable MXene-based organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display by combining high performance MXene electrodes, flexible OLEDs, and ultrathin and functional encapsulation systems. The MXene material was synthesized and used to fabricate a highly reliable MXene-based OLED that can stably operate in air condition for over 2000 h, endure repetitive bending deformation of 1.5 mm radius, and maintain environmental stability for 6 h when exposed to wet surroundings. The RGB MXene-based OLEDs were fabricated, (1691 cd m^-2 at 40.4 mA cm^-2 for red, 1377 cd m^-2 at 4.26 mA cm^-2 for green, and 1475 cd m^-2 at 18.6 mA cm^-2 for blue) and a matrix-addressable transparent OLED display was demonstrated that could display letters and shapes.

Ambient-conditions spinning of functional soft fibers via engineering molecular chain networks and phase separation

Producing functional soft fibers via existing spinning methods is environmentally and economically costly due to the complexity of spinning equipment, involvement of copious solvents, intensive consumption of energy, and multi-step pre-/post-spinning treatments. We report a nonsolvent vapor-induced phase separation spinning approach under ambient conditions, which resembles the native spider silk fibrillation. It is enabled by the optimal rheological properties of dopes via engineering silver-coordinated molecular chain interactions and autonomous phase transition due to the nonsolvent vapor-induced phase separation effect. Fiber fibrillation under ambient conditions using a polyacrylonitrile-silver ion dope is demonstrated, along with detailed elucidations on tuning dope spinnability through rheological analysis. The obtained fibers are mechanically soft, stretchable, and electrically conductive, benefiting from elastic molecular chain networks via silver-based coordination complexes and in-situ reduced silver nanoparticles. Particularly, these fibers can be configured as wearable electronics for self-sensing and self-powering applications. Our ambient-conditions spinning approach provides a platform to create functional soft fibers with unified mechanical and electrical properties at a two-to-three order of magnitude less energy cost under ambient conditions.

High-efficiency stretchable light-emitting polymers from thermally activated delayed fluorescence

Stretchable light-emitting materials are the key components for realizing skin-like displays and optical biostimulation. All the stretchable emitters reported to date, to the best of our knowledge, have been based on electroluminescent polymers that only harness singlet excitons, limiting their theoretical quantum yield to 25%. Here we present a design concept for imparting stretchability onto electroluminescent polymers that can harness all the excitons through thermally activated delayed fluorescence, thereby reaching a near-unity theoretical quantum yield. We show that our design strategy of inserting flexible, linear units into a polymer backbone can substantially increase the mechanical stretchability without affecting the underlying electroluminescent processes. As a result, our synthesized polymer achieves a stretchability of 125%, with an external quantum efficiency of 10%. Furthermore, we demonstrate a fully stretchable organic light-emitting diode, confirming that the proposed stretchable thermally activated delayed fluorescence polymers provide a path towards simultaneously achieving desirable electroluminescent and mechanical characteristics, including high efficiency, brightness, switching speed and stretchability as well as low driving voltage.

Synergetic Lithium and Hydrogen Bonds Endow Liquid-Free Photonic Ionic Elastomer with Mechanical Robustness and Electrical/Optical Dual-Output

Photonic ionic elastomers (PIEs) capable of multiple signal outputs are intriguing in flexible interactive electronics. However, fabricating PIEs with simultaneous mechanical robustness, good ionic conductivity, and brilliant structure color still remains challenging. Here, the limitations are broken through introducing the synergistic effect of lithium and hydrogen bonds into an elastomer. In virtue of lithium bonding between lithium ions and carbonyl groups in the polymer matrix as well as hydrogen bonding between silanol on the surface of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) and ether groups along polymer chains, the PIEs demonstrate mechanical strength up to 4.3 MPa and toughness up to 8.6 MJ m^-3 . Meanwhile, the synchronous electrical and optical output under mechanical strains can be achieved in the PIEs with the presence of dissociated ions contributed by lithium bond and non-close-packed SiNPs stabilized by the hydrogen bond. Moreover, due to their liquid-free nature, the PIEs exhibit extraordinary stability and durability, which can withstand extreme conditions including both high and low temperatures as well as high humidity. This work provides a promising molecular engineering route to construct high-performance photonic ionic conductors toward advanced ionotronic applications.

Skin-Interfaced Wearable Sweat Sensors for Precision Medicine

Wearable sensors hold great potential in empowering personalized health monitoring, predictive analytics, and timely intervention toward personalized healthcare. Advances in flexible electronics, materials science, and electrochemistry have spurred the development of wearable sweat sensors that enable the continuous and noninvasive screening of analytes indicative of health status. Existing major challenges in wearable sensors include: improving the sweat extraction and sweat sensing capabilities, improving the form factor of the wearable device for minimal discomfort and reliable measurements when worn, and understanding the clinical value of sweat analytes toward biomarker discovery. This review provides a comprehensive review of wearable sweat sensors and outlines state-of-the-art technologies and research that strive to bridge these gaps. The physiology of sweat, materials, biosensing mechanisms and advances, and approaches for sweat induction and sampling are introduced. Additionally, design considerations for the system-level development of wearable sweat sensing devices, spanning from strategies for prolonged sweat extraction to efficient powering of wearables, are discussed. Furthermore, the applications, data analytics, commercialization efforts, challenges, and prospects of wearable sweat sensors for precision medicine are discussed.

Soft and lightweight fabric enables powerful and high-range pneumatic actuation

Soft structures and actuation allow robots, conventionally consisting of rigid components, to perform more compliant, adaptive interactions similar to living creatures. Although numerous functions of these types of actuators have been demonstrated in the literature, their hyperelastic designs generally suffer from limited workspaces and load-carrying capabilities primarily due to their structural stretchability factor. Here, we describe a series of pneumatic actuators based on soft but less stretchable fabric that can simultaneously perform tunable workspace and bear a high payload. The motion mode of the actuator is programmable, combinable, and predictable and is informed by rapid response to low input pressure. A robotic gripper using three fabric actuators is also presented. The gripper demonstrates a grasping force of over 150 N and a grasping range from 70 to 350 millimeters. The design concept and comprehensive guidelines presented would provide design and analysis foundations for applying less stretchable yet soft materials in soft robots to further enhance their practicality.

Engineering PEDOT:PSS/PEG Fibers with a Textured Surface toward Comprehensive Personal Thermal Management

The wild environment is unpredictable where soaring or plummeting temperatures in extreme weather events can pose serious threats to human lives. Incorporating passive evaporative cooling and controllable electric heating into clothing could effectively protect human beings from such harsh environments. In this work, poly(3,4-ethylene dioxy thiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PPP) fibers with the core-shell structure and attractively textured surface have been successfully prepared via a single-nozzle wet-spinning technique. Results show that the fibers possess fascinating specific surface area (184.8 m²·g^-1), electrical conductivity (50 S·cm^-1), and stretchability (>100%) because of the novel preparation method and hierarchical morphological design. Through simple textile manufacturing routes, PPP fibers can be woven into fabrics easily, which exhibit desirable breathability, washability, and mechanical strength for smart textiles while maintaining favorable hygroscopicity. Benefiting from the textured structure with large specific surface area, PPP fabric exhibits attractile evaporative cooling rate. Practical application tests have demonstrated that under direct sunlight, the surface temperature of the PPP fabric is ∼5.2 and ∼10.8 °C lower than commercial cotton and polyester fabrics, respectively. Meanwhile, as conductive fibers, the resultant PPP fabric can heat under low-power electricity, therefore achieving the effect of "warmth in winter and coolness in summer". The facile fabrication process and elevated performance of PPP fibers present significant advantages for applications in intelligent garments and textiles, as well as comprehensive personal thermal management, which opens a new avenue for future design in these fields.

Extremely Robust and Multifunctional Nanocomposite Fibers for Strain-Unperturbed Textile Electronics

Textile electronics are needed that can achieve strain-unaltered performance when they undergo irregular and repeated strain deformation. Such strain-unaltered textile electronics require advanced fibers that simultaneously have high functionalities and extreme robustness as fabric materials. Current synthetic nanocomposite fibers based on inorganic matrix have remarkable functionalities but often suffer from low robustness and poor tolerance against crack formation. Here, we present a design for a high-performance multifunctional nanocomposite fiber that is mechanically and electrically robust, which was realized by crosslinking titanium carbide (MXene) nanosheets with a slide-ring polyrotaxane to form an internal mechanically-interlocked network. This inorganic matrix nanocomposite fiber featured distinct strain-hardening mechanical behavior and exceptional load-bearing capability (toughness approaching 60 MJ m^-3 and ductility over 27%). It retained 100% of its ductility after cyclic strain loading. Moreover, the high electrical conductivity (>1.1 × 10⁵ S m^-1 ) and electrochemical performance (>360 F cm^-3 ) of the nanocomposite fiber can be well retained after subjecting the fiber to extensive (>25% strain) and long-term repeated (10 000 cycles) dimensional changes. Such superior robustness allowed for the fabrication of the nanocomposite fibers into various robust wearable devices, such as textile-based electromechanical sensors with strain-unalterable sensing performance and fiber-shaped supercapacitors with invariant electrochemical performance for 10 000 strain loading cycles.

Self-Powered Smart Textile Based on Dynamic Schottky Diode for Human-Machine Interactions

The growing demand for sustained self-powered devices with multifunctional sensing networks is one of the main challenges for smart textiles, which are the critical elements for the future Internet of Things (IoT) and Point of Care (POC). Here, cellulose-based smart textile is integrated with dynamic Schottky diode (DSD) to generate sustained power source (current density of 8.9 mA m⁻² ) for self-powered built-in sensing network. In response to normal and shear motions, a pressure sensor with a sensitivity of 0.12 KPa⁻¹ and an impact sensor are demonstrated, respectively. The woven structure of the textile contributes to signal amplification, which can also form a matrix of sensing elements for distributed sensing. The proposed strategy of fabricating self-powered and multifunctional sensing networks with smart textiles shows tremendous potential for future intelligent society.

Electronic textiles: New age of wearable technology for healthcare and fitness solutions

Sedentary lifestyles and evolving work environments have created challenges for global health and cause huge burdens on healthcare and fitness systems. Physical immobility and functional losses due to aging are two main reasons for noncommunicable disease mortality. Smart electronic textiles (e-textiles) have attracted considerable attention because of their potential uses in health monitoring, rehabilitation, and training assessment applications. Interactive textiles integrated with electronic devices and algorithms can be used to gather, process, and digitize data on human body motion in real time for purposes such as electrotherapy, improving blood circulation, and promoting wound healing. This review summarizes research advances on e-textiles designed for wearable healthcare and fitness systems. The significance of e-textiles, key applications, and future demand expectations are addressed in this review. Various health conditions and fitness problems and possible solutions involving the use of multifunctional interactive garments are discussed. A brief discussion of essential materials and basic procedures used to fabricate wearable e-textiles are included. Finally, the current challenges, possible solutions, opportunities, and future perspectives in the area of smart textiles are discussed.

Technology Roadmap for Flexible Sensors

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

Fibriform Organic Electrochemical Diodes with Rectifying, Complementary Logic and Transient Voltage Suppression Functions for Wearable E-Textile Embedded Circuits

In this study, a fibriform electrochemical diode capable of performing rectifying, complementary logic and device protection functions for future e-textile circuit systems is fabricated. The diode was fabricated using a simple twisted assembly of metal/polymer semiconductor/ion gel coaxial microfibers and conducting microfiber electrodes. The fibriform diode exhibited a prominent asymmetrical current flow with a rectification ratio of over 10², and its performance was retained after repeated bending deformations and washings. Fundamental studies on the electrochemical interactions of polymer semiconductors with ions reveal that the Faradaic current generated in polymer semiconductors by electrochemical reactions results in an abrupt current increase under a forward bias, in which the threshold voltages of the device are determined by the oxidation or reduction potential of the polymer semiconductor. Textile-embedded full-wave rectifiers and logic gate circuits were implemented by simply integrating the fibriform diodes, exhibiting AC-to-DC signal conversion and logic operation functions, respectively. It was also confirmed that the proposed fibriform diode can suppress transient voltages and thus protect a low-voltage operational wearable e-textile circuit.

Mild construction of an Fe-B-O based flexible electrode toward highly efficient alkaline simulated seawater splitting

It is essential to construct self-supporting electrodes based on earth-abundant iron borides in a mild and economical manner for grid-scale hydrogen production. Herein, a series of highly efficient, flexible, robust, and scalable Fe-B-O@FeB_x modified on hydrophilic cloth (denoted as Fe-B-O@FeB_x/HC, 10 cm × 10 cm) are fabricated by mild electroless plating. The overpotentials and Tafel slope values for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions are 59 mV and 57.62 mV dec^-1 and 181 mV and 65.44 mV dec^-1, respectively; only 1.462 V is required to achieve 10 mA cm^-2 during overall water splitting (OWS). Fe-B-O@FeB_x/HC maintains its high catalytic activity for more than 7 days at an industrial current density (400 mA cm^-2), owing to the loosened popcorn-like Fe-B-O@FeB_x that is firmly loaded on a 2D-layered and mechanically robust substrate along with its fast charge and mass transfer kinetics. The chimney effect of core-shell borides@(oxyhydro)oxides enhances the OWS performance and protects the inner metal borides from further corrosion. Moreover, the flexible Fe-B-O@FeB_x/HC electrode has a low cost for grid-scale hydrogen production ($2.97 kg^-1). The proposed strategy lays a solid foundation for universal preparation, large-scale hydrogen production and practical applications thereof.

Flexible Triboelectric Tactile Sensor Based on a Robust MXene/Leather Film for Human-Machine Interaction

With the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in recent years, self-actuated sensor systems without an external power supply such as flexible triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based strain sensors have received wide attention due to their simple structure and self-powered active sensing properties. However, to satisfy the practical applications of human wearable biointegration, flexible TENGs impose higher requirements for establishing a balance between material flexibility and good electrical properties. In this work, the strength of the MXene/substrate interface was greatly improved by utilizing leather with a unique surface structure as the substrate material, resulting in a mechanically strong and electrically conductive MXene film. Due to the natural fiber structure of the leather surface, the surface of the MXene film with a rough structure was obtained, which improved the electrical output performance of the TENG. The electrode output voltage of MXene film on leather based on single-electrode TENG can reach 199.56 V and the maximum output power density can reach 0.469 mW/cm². Combined with laser-assisted technology, the efficient array preparation of MXene and graphene was achieved and applied to various human-machine interface (HMI) applications.

Soft Electronics for Health Monitoring Assisted by Machine Learning

Due to the development of the novel materials, the past two decades have witnessed the rapid advances of soft electronics. The soft electronics have huge potential in the physical sign monitoring and health care. One of the important advantages of soft electronics is forming good interface with skin, which can increase the user scale and improve the signal quality. Therefore, it is easy to build the specific dataset, which is important to improve the performance of machine learning algorithm. At the same time, with the assistance of machine learning algorithm, the soft electronics have become more and more intelligent to realize real-time analysis and diagnosis. The soft electronics and machining learning algorithms complement each other very well. It is indubitable that the soft electronics will bring us to a healthier and more intelligent world in the near future. Therefore, in this review, we will give a careful introduction about the new soft material, physiological signal detected by soft devices, and the soft devices assisted by machine learning algorithm. Some soft materials will be discussed such as two-dimensional material, carbon nanotube, nanowire, nanomesh, and hydrogel. Then, soft sensors will be discussed according to the physiological signal types (pulse, respiration, human motion, intraocular pressure, phonation, etc.). After that, the soft electronics assisted by various algorithms will be reviewed, including some classical algorithms and powerful neural network algorithms. Especially, the soft device assisted by neural network will be introduced carefully. Finally, the outlook, challenge, and conclusion of soft system powered by machine learning algorithm will be discussed.

"Water-in-Deep Eutectic Solvent" Gel Electrolytes Synergistically Controlled by Solvation Regulation and Gelation Strategies for Flexible Electronic Devices

Recent developments in flexible electronics have heightened the need for electrolytes with high safety, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability. However, neither conventional organic electrolytes nor aqueous electrolytes can meet the above requirements simultaneously. Herein, a novel "water-in-deep eutectic solvent" gel (WIDG) electrolyte synergistically controlled by the solvation regulation and gelation strategies is reported. The water molecules introduced into deep eutectic solvent (DES) participate in the solvation structure regulation of Li⁺, thus endowing the WIDG electrolyte with high safety, thermal stability, and outstanding electrochemical performance, including high ionic conductivity (∼1.23 mS cm^-1) and a wide electrochemical window (∼5.4 V). Besides, the polymer in the gel interacts with DES and H₂O, further optimizing the electrolyte with excellent mechanical strength and higher operating voltage. Benefiting from these advantages, the lithium-ion capacitor constructed by WIDG electrolyte presents a high areal capacitance of 246 mF cm^-2 with an energy density of 87.3 μWh cm^-2. The use of the gel enhances the electrode structure stability, resulting in desirable cycling stability (>90% capacity retention after 1400 cycles). Moreover, the WIDG-assembled sensor exhibits high sensitivity and rapid real-time detection of motion. This work will provide guidelines for designing high-safety and high-operating-voltage electrolytes for flexible electronics.

Fabrication of practical deformable displays: advances and challenges

Display form factors such as size and shape have been conventionally determined in consideration of usability and portability. The recent trends requiring wearability and convergence of various smart devices demand innovations in display form factors to realize deformability and large screens. Expandable displays that are foldable, multi-foldable, slidable, or rollable have been commercialized or on the edge of product launches. Beyond such two-dimensional (2D) expansion of displays, efforts have been made to develop three dimensional (3D) free-form displays that can be stretched and crumpled for use in realistic tactile sensation, artificial skin for robots, and on-skin or implantable displays. This review article analyzes the current state of the 2D and 3D deformable displays and discusses the technological challenges to be achieved for industrial commercialization.

Constructing Carbon Nanotube Hybrid Fiber Electrodes with Unique Hierarchical Microcrack Structure for High-Voltage, Ultrahigh-Rate, and Ultralong-Life Flexible Aqueous Zinc Batteries

Flexible aqueous zinc batteries are promising candidates as safe power sources for fast-growing portable and wearable electronics. However, the low working voltage, poor rate capability, and cycling stability have greatly restricted their development and applications. Here, a new family of flexible bimetallic phosphide/carbon nanotube hybrid fiber electrodes with unique macroscopic microcrack structure and microscopic porous nanoflower structure is reported. The hierarchical microcrack structure not only facilitates the penetration of electrolyte for effective exposure of active sites, but also can serve as buffers to relieve the stress concentrations of the fiber electrode under deformations, enabling impressive electrochemical performance and mechanical flexibility. Particularly, the fabricated flexible aqueous zinc batteries demonstrate high working voltage plateau and specific capacity (≈1.7 V, 258.9 mAh g^-1 at 2 A g^-1 ), ultrahigh rate capability (135.8 mAh g^-1 at 50 A g^-1 , fully charged in only 9.8 s) and impressive power density of 79 000 W kg^-1 . Moreover, the flexible batteries show ultralong cycling life with 74.6% capacity retention after 20 000 cycles. The fiber batteries are also highly flexible and can be easily knitted into soft electronic textiles to power a smartphone, which are particularly promising for the next-generation of flexible and wearable electronics.

Flexible Zinc-Air Batteries with Ampere-Hour Capacities and Wide-Temperature Adaptabilities

Flexible Zn-air batteries (FZABs) have significant potentials as efficient energy storage devices for wearable electronics because of their safeties and high energy-to-cost ratios. However, their application is limited by their short cycle lives, low discharge capacities per cycle, and high charge/discharge polarizations. Accordingly, herein, a poly(sodium acrylate)-polyvinyl alcohol (PANa-PVA)-ionic liquid (IL) hydrogel (PANa-PVA-IL) is prepared using a hygroscopic IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, as an additive for twin-chain PANa-PVA. PANa-PVA-IL exhibits a high conductivity of 306.9 mS cm^-1 and a water uptake of 2515 wt% at room temperature. Moreover, a low-cost bifunctional catalyst, namely, Co₉ S₈ nanoparticles anchored on N- and S-co-doped activated carbon black pearls 2000 (Co₉ S₈ -NSABP), is synthesized, which demonstrates a low O₂ reversibility potential gap of 0.629 V. FZABs based on PANa-PVA-IL and Co₉ S₈ -NSABP demonstrate high discharge capacities of 1.67 mAh cm^-2 per cycle and long cycle lives of 330 h. Large-scale flexible rechargeable Zn-air pouch cells exhibit total capacities of 1.03 Ah and energy densities of 246 Wh kg_cell ^-1 . This study provides new information about hydrogels with high ionic conductivities and water uptakes and should facilitate the application of FZABs in wearable electronics.

Elasto-Plastic Design of Ultrathin Interlayer for Enhancing Strain Tolerance of Flexible Electronics

The ability to tolerate large strains during various degrees of deformation is a core issue in the development of flexible electronics. Commonly used strategies nowadays to enhance the strain tolerance of thin film devices focus on the optimization of the device architecture and the increase of bonding at the materials interface. In this paper, we propose a strategy, namely elasto-plastic design of an ultrathin interlayer, to boost the strain tolerance of flexible electronics. We demonstrate that insertion of an ultrathin, stiff (high Young's modulus) and elastic (high yield strain) interlayer between an upper rigid film/device and a soft substrate, regardless of the substrate thickness or the interfacial bonding, can significantly reduce the actual strain applied on the film/device when the substrate is bent. Being independent of existing strategies, the elasto-plastic design strategy offers an effective method to enhance the device flexibility without redesigning the device structure or altering the material interface.

Soft Fiber Electronics Based on Semiconducting Polymer

Fibers, originating from nature and mastered by human, have woven their way throughout the entire history of human civilization. Recent developments in semiconducting polymer materials have further endowed fibers and textiles with various electronic functions, which are attractive in applications such as information interfacing, personalized medicine, and clean energy. Owing to their ability to be easily integrated into daily life, soft fiber electronics based on semiconducting polymers have gained popularity recently for wearable and implantable applications. Herein, we present a review of the previous and current progress in semiconducting polymer-based fiber electronics, particularly focusing on smart-wearable and implantable areas. First, we provide a brief overview of semiconducting polymers from the viewpoint of materials based on the basic concepts and functionality requirements of different devices. Then we analyze the existing applications and associated devices such as information interfaces, healthcare and medicine, and energy conversion and storage. The working principle and performance of semiconducting polymer-based fiber devices are summarized. Furthermore, we focus on the fabrication techniques of fiber devices. Based on the continuous fabrication of one-dimensional fiber and yarn, we introduce two- and three-dimensional fabric fabricating methods. Finally, we review challenges and relevant perspectives and potential solutions to address the related problems.

Ultrafast materials synthesis and manufacturing techniques for emerging energy and environmental applications

Energy and environmental issues have attracted increasing attention globally, where sustainability and low-carbon emissions are seriously considered and widely accepted by government officials. In response to this situation, the development of renewable energy and environmental technologies is urgently needed to complement the usage of traditional fossil fuels. While a big part of advancement in these technologies relies on materials innovations, new materials discovery is limited by sluggish conventional materials synthesis methods, greatly hindering the advancement of related technologies. To address this issue, this review introduces and comprehensively summarizes emerging ultrafast materials synthesis methods that could synthesize materials in times as short as nanoseconds, significantly improving research efficiency. We discuss the unique advantages of these methods, followed by how they benefit individual applications for renewable energy and the environment. We also highlight the scalability of ultrafast manufacturing towards their potential industrial utilization. Finally, we provide our perspectives on challenges and opportunities for the future development of ultrafast synthesis and manufacturing technologies. We anticipate that fertile opportunities exist not only for energy and the environment but also for many other applications.

Thermally Laminated Lighting Textile for Wearable Displays with High Durability

Textile-based light-emitting devices are attracting more and more attention because of their potential applications in smart clothing, human-computer interfaces, safety warnings, entertainment fashion, etc. However, simple and efficient manufacturing of luminescent devices on fabrics even clothing with excellent stretchability and washability remains challenging. Here, a solvent-free thermal lamination process combined with laser engraving has been proposed to fabricate electroluminescent (EL) devices on textiles. All the preprepared components, such as the bottom electrode, the EL layer, and the top transparent electrode, were thermally laminated on the surface of textiles employing thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the binding matrix. The stretchability, luminance, and interface adhesion of the EL devices were systematically studied, showing excellent mechanical durability at high temperature, in humid environments, withstanding repeated machine washing, and resistant to various forms of physical damage. As a demonstration of potential application, textile-based EL devices were fabricated, which could display colored and pixelated patterns as well as dynamic images. The thermal lamination technology developed in this work can potentially enable people to DIY (do it yourself) fabricate light-emitting devices on clothing using daily tools, which could facilitate the widespread use of textile-based wearable displays.

Ultrahigh Strain-Insensitive Integrated Hybrid Electronics Using Highly Stretchable Bilayer Liquid Metal Based Conductor

Human-interfaced electronic systems require strain-resilient circuits. However, present integrated stretchable electronics easily suffer from electrical deterioration and face challenges in forming robust multilayered soft-rigid hybrid configurations. Here, a bilayer liquid-solid conductor (b-LSC) with amphiphilic properties is introduced to reliably interface with both rigid electronics and elastomeric substrates. The top liquid metal can self-solder its interface with rigid electronics at a resistance 30% lower than the traditional tin-soldered rigid interface. The bottom polar composite comprising liquid metal particles and polymers can not only reliably interface with elastomers but also help the b-LSC heal after breakage. The b-LSC can be scalably fabricated by printing and subsequent peeling strategies, showing ultra-high strain-insensitive conductivity (maximum 22 532 S cm^-1 ), extreme stretchability (2260%), and negligible resistance change under ultra-high strain (0.34 times increase under 1000% strain). It can act as stretchable vertical interconnect access for connecting multilayered layouts and can be scalably and universally fabricated on various substrates with a resolution of ≈200 µm. It is demonstrated that it can construct stretchable sensor arrays, multi-layered stretchable displays, highly integrated haptic user-interactive optoelectric E-skins, visualized heaters, robot touch sensing systems, and wireless powering for wearable electronics.

Toward Water-Immersion Programmable Meta-Display

Heading toward next-generation intelligent display, dynamic control capability for meta-devices is critical for real world applications. Beyond the conventional electrical/optical/mechanical/thermal tuning methods, liquid immersion recently has emerged as a facile tuning mechanism which is easily accessible (especially water) and practically implementable for large tuning area. However, due to the longstanding and critical drawback of lacking independent-encoding capability, the state-of-art immersion approach remains incapable of pixel-level programmable switching. Here a water-immersion tuning scheme with pixel-scale programmability for dynamic meta-displays is proposed. Tunable meta-pixels can be engineered to construct spectral selective patterns at prior-/post- immersion states, such that a metasurface enables pixel-level transforming animations for dynamic multifield meta-displays, including near-field dual-nanoprints and far-field dual-holographic displays. The proposed water-immersion programmable approach for meta-display, benefitting from its large tuning area, facile operation and strong repeatability, may find a revolutionary path toward next-generation intelligent display with practical applications in dynamic display/encryption, information anticounterfeit/storage, and optical sensors.

Multimodal-Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescence Security Materials

Nations, industries, and aspects of everyday life have undergone forgery and counterfeiting ever since the emergence of commercialization. Securing documents and products with anticounterfeit additives shows promise for authentication, allowing one to combat ever-increasing global counterfeiting. One most-used effective encryption strategy is to combine with optical-security markers on the required protection objects; however, state-of-the-art labels still suffer from imitation due to their poor complexity and easy forecasting, as a result of deterministic production. Developing advanced anticounterfeiting tags with unusual optical characters and further incorporating complex security features are desired to achieve multimodal, unbreakable authentication capacity; unfortunately, this has not yet been achieved. Here, we prepare a series of stable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, composed of toxicity-free, high-quality-emitting inorganic quantum dots (QDs) and liquid crystals, using a designed helical-coassembly strategy. This CPL system achieves a figure of merit (FM, assessing the performance of both luminescence dissymmetry and quantum yield) value of 0.39, fulfilling practical demands for anticounterfeiting applications. Based on these CPL structures, we produce a type of multimodal-responsive security materials (MRSMs) that exhibits six different stimuli-responsive modes, including light activation, polarization, temperature, voltage, pressure, and view angle. Thus, we show a proof-of-principle blockchain-like integrated anticounterfeiting system, allowing multimodal-responsive, interactive/changeable information encryption-decryption. We further encapsulate the obtained security materials into a fiber to expand our materials to work on flexible fabrics, that is, building an intelligent textile with a color-adaptable function along with environmental change.

Functional Fiber Materials to Smart Fiber Devices

The development of fiber materials has accompanied the evolution of human civilization for centuries. Recent advances in materials science and chemistry offered fibers new applications with various functions, including energy harvesting, energy storing, displaying, health monitoring and treating, and computing. The unique one-dimensional shape of fiber devices endows them advantages to work as human-interfaced electronics due to the small size, lightweight, flexibility, and feasibility for integration into large-scale textile systems. In this review, we first present a discussion of the basics of fiber materials and the design principles of fiber devices, followed by a comprehensive analysis on recently developed fiber devices. Finally, we provide the current challenges facing this field and give an outlook on future research directions. With novel fiber devices and new applications continuing to be discovered after two decades of research, we envision that new fiber devices could have an important impact on our life in the near future.

Large-area waterproof and durable perovskite luminescent textiles

Lead halide perovskites show great potential to be used in wearable optoelectronics. However, obstacles for real applications lie in their instability under light, moisture and temperature stress, noxious lead ions leakage and difficulties in fabricating uniform luminescent textiles at large scale and high production rates. Overcoming these obstacles, we report simple, high-throughput electrospinning of large-area (> 375 cm²) flexible perovskite luminescent textiles woven by ultra-stable polymer@perovskite@cyclodextrin@silane composite fibers. These textiles exhibit bright and narrow-band photoluminescence (a photoluminescence quantum yield of 49.7%, full-width at half-maximum <17 nm) and the time to reach 50% photoluminescence of 14,193 h under ambient conditions, showcasing good stability against water immersion (> 3300 h), ultraviolet irradiation, high temperatures (up to 250 °C) and pressure surge (up to 30 MPa). The waterproof PLTs withstood fierce water scouring without any detectable leaching of lead ions. These low-cost and scalable woven PLTs enable breakthrough application in marine rescue.

An Overview of Flexible Sensors: Development, Application, and Challenges

The emergence and advancement of flexible electronics have great potential to lead development trends in many fields, such as "smart electronic skin" and wearable electronics. By acting as intermediates to detect a variety of external stimuli or physiological parameters, flexible sensors are regarded as a core component of flexible electronic systems and have been extensively studied. Unlike conventional rigid sensors requiring costly instruments and complicated fabrication processes, flexible sensors can be manufactured by simple procedures with excellent production efficiency, reliable output performance, and superior adaptability to the irregular surface of the surroundings where they are applied. Here, recent studies on flexible sensors for sensing humidity and strain/pressure are outlined, emphasizing their sensory materials, working mechanisms, structures, fabrication methods, and particular applications. Furthermore, a conclusion, including future perspectives and a short overview of the market share in this field, is given for further advancing this field of research.

Recent progress in fiber-based soft electronics enabled by liquid metal

Soft electronics can seamlessly integrate with the human skin which will greatly improve the quality of life in the fields of healthcare monitoring, disease treatment, virtual reality, and human-machine interfaces. Currently, the stretchability of most soft electronics is achieved by incorporating stretchable conductors with elastic substrates. Among stretchable conductors, liquid metals stand out for their metal-grade conductivity, liquid-grade deformability, and relatively low cost. However, the elastic substrates usually composed of silicone rubber, polyurethane, and hydrogels have poor air permeability, and long-term exposure can cause skin redness and irritation. The substrates composed of fibers usually have excellent air permeability due to their high porosity, making them ideal substrates for soft electronics in long-term applications. Fibers can be woven directly into various shapes, or formed into various shapes on the mold by spinning techniques such as electrospinning. Here, we provide an overview of fiber-based soft electronics enabled by liquid metals. An introduction to the spinning technology is provided. Typical applications and patterning strategies of liquid metal are presented. We review the latest progress in the design and fabrication of representative liquid metal fibers and their application in soft electronics such as conductors, sensors, and energy harvesting. Finally, we discuss the challenges of fiber-based soft electronics and provide an outlook on future prospects.

Smart Mechanoluminescent Phosphors: A Review of Strontium-Aluminate-Based Materials, Properties, and Their Advanced Application Technologies

Mechanoluminescence, a smart luminescence phenomenon in which light energy is directly produced by a mechanical force, has recently received significant attention because of its important applications in fields such as visible strain sensing and structural health monitoring. Up to present, hundreds of inorganic and organic mechanoluminescent smart materials have been discovered and studied. Among them, strontium-aluminate-based materials are an important class of inorganic mechanoluminescent materials for fundamental research and practical applications attributed to their extremely low force/pressure threshold of mechanoluminescence, efficient photoluminescence, persistent afterglow, and a relatively low synthesis cost. This paper presents a systematic and comprehensive review of strontium-aluminate-based luminescent materials' mechanoluminescence phenomena, mechanisms, material synthesis techniques, and related applications. Besides of summarizing the early and the latest research on this material system, an outlook is provided on its environmental, energy issue and future applications in smart wearable devices, advanced energy-saving lighting and displays.

Stretchable One-Dimensional Conductors for Wearable Applications

Continuous, one-dimensional (1D) stretchable conductors have attracted significant attention for the development of wearables and soft-matter electronics. Through the use of advanced spinning, printing, and textile technologies, 1D stretchable conductors in the forms of fibers, wires, and yarns can be designed and engineered to meet the demanding requirements for different wearable applications. Several crucial parameters, such as microarchitecture, conductivity, stretchability, and scalability, play essential roles in designing and developing wearable devices and intelligent textiles. Methodologies and fabrication processes have successfully realized 1D conductors that are highly conductive, strong, lightweight, stretchable, and conformable and can be readily integrated with common fabrics and soft matter. This review summarizes the latest advances in continuous, 1D stretchable conductors and emphasizes recent developments in materials, methodologies, fabrication processes, and strategies geared toward applications in electrical interconnects, mechanical sensors, actuators, and heaters. This review classifies 1D conductors into three categories on the basis of their electrical responses: (1) rigid 1D conductors, (2) piezoresistive 1D conductors, and (3) resistance-stable 1D conductors. This review also evaluates the present challenges in these areas and presents perspectives for improving the performance of stretchable 1D conductors for wearable textile and flexible electronic applications.

Opportunities of Flexible and Portable Electrochemical Devices for Energy Storage: Expanding the Spotlight onto Semi-solid/Solid Electrolytes

The ever-increasing demand for flexible and portable electronics has stimulated research and development in building advanced electrochemical energy devices which are lightweight, ultrathin, small in size, bendable, foldable, knittable, wearable, and/or stretchable. In such flexible and portable devices, semi-solid/solid electrolytes besides anodes and cathodes are the necessary components determining the energy/power performances. By serving as the ion transport channels, such semi-solid/solid electrolytes may be beneficial to resolving the issues of leakage, electrode corrosion, and metal electrode dendrite growth. In this paper, the fundamentals of semi-solid/solid electrolytes (e.g., chemical composition, ionic conductivity, electrochemical window, mechanical strength, thermal stability, and other attractive features), the electrode-electrolyte interfacial properties, and their relationships with the performance of various energy devices (e.g., supercapacitors, secondary ion batteries, metal-sulfur batteries, and metal-air batteries) are comprehensively reviewed in terms of materials synthesis and/or characterization, functional mechanisms, and device assembling for performance validation. The most recent advancements in improving the performance of electrochemical energy devices are summarized with focuses on analyzing the existing technical challenges (e.g., solid electrolyte interphase formation, metal electrode dendrite growth, polysulfide shuttle issue, electrolyte instability in half-open battery structure) and the strategies for overcoming these challenges through modification of semi-solid/solid electrolyte materials. Several possible directions for future research and development are proposed for going beyond existing technological bottlenecks and achieving desirable flexible and portable electrochemical energy devices to fulfill their practical applications. It is expected that this review may provide the readers with a comprehensive cross-technology understanding of the semi-solid/solid electrolytes for facilitating their current and future researches on the flexible and portable electrochemical energy devices.

Reconfigurable neuromorphic memristor network for ultralow-power smart textile electronics

Neuromorphic computing memristors are attractive to construct low-power- consumption electronic textiles due to the intrinsic interwoven architecture and promising applications in wearable electronics. Developing reconfigurable fiber-based memristors is an efficient method to realize electronic textiles that capable of neuromorphic computing function. However, the previously reported artificial synapse and neuron need different materials and configurations, making it difficult to realize multiple functions in a single device. Herein, a textile memristor network of Ag/MoS₂/HfAlO_x/carbon nanotube with reconfigurable characteristics was reported, which can achieve both nonvolatile synaptic plasticity and volatile neuron functions. In addition, a single reconfigurable memristor can realize integrate-and-fire function, exhibiting significant advantages in reducing the complexity of neuron circuits. The firing energy consumption of fiber-based memristive neuron is 1.9 fJ/spike (femtojoule-level), which is at least three orders of magnitude lower than that of the reported biological and artificial neuron (picojoule-level). The ultralow energy consumption makes it possible to create an electronic neural network that reduces the energy consumption compared to human brain. By integrating the reconfigurable synapse, neuron and heating resistor, a smart textile system is successfully constructed for warm fabric application, providing a unique functional reconfiguration pathway toward the next-generation in-memory computing textile system.

Multifunctional Fiber-Enabled Intelligent Health Agents

The application of wearable devices is promoting the development toward digitization and intelligence in the field of health. However, the current smart devices centered on human health have disadvantages such as weak perception, high interference degree, and unfriendly interaction. Here, an intelligent health agent based on multifunctional fibers, with the characteristics of autonomy, activeness, intelligence, and perceptibility enabling health services, is proposed. According to the requirements for healthcare in the medical field and daily life, four major aspects driven by intelligent agents, including health monitoring, therapy, protection, and minimally invasive surgery, are summarized from the perspectives of materials science, medicine, and computer science. The function of intelligent health agents is realized through multifunctional fibers as sensing units and artificial intelligence technology as a cognitive engine. The structure, characteristics, and performance of fibers and analysis systems and algorithms are reviewed, while discussing future challenges and opportunities in healthcare and medicine. Finally, based on the above four aspects, future scenarios related to health protection of a person's life are presented. Intelligent health agents will have the potential to accelerate the realization of precision medicine and active health.

Elastic Fibers/Fabrics for Wearables and Bioelectronics

Wearables and bioelectronics rely on breathable interface devices with bioaffinity, biocompatibility, and smart functionality for interactions between beings and things and the surrounding environment. Elastic fibers/fabrics with mechanical adaptivity to various deformations and complex substrates, are promising to act as fillers, carriers, substrates, dressings, and scaffolds in the construction of biointerfaces for the human body, skins, organs, and plants, realizing functions such as energy exchange, sensing, perception, augmented virtuality, health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and intervention therapy. This review summarizes and highlights the latest breakthroughs of elastic fibers/fabrics for wearables and bioelectronics, aiming to offer insights into elasticity mechanisms, production methods, and electrical components integration strategies with fibers/fabrics, presenting a profile of elastic fibers/fabrics for energy management, sensors, e-skins, thermal management, personal protection, wound healing, biosensing, and drug delivery. The trans-disciplinary application of elastic fibers/fabrics from wearables to biomedicine provides important inspiration for technology transplantation and function integration to adapt different application systems. As a discussion platform, here the main challenges and possible solutions in the field are proposed, hopefully can provide guidance for promoting the development of elastic e-textiles in consideration of the trade-off between mechanical/electrical performance, industrial-scale production, diverse environmental adaptivity, and multiscenario on-spot applications.

Ion-in-Conjugation: A Promising Concept for Multifunctional Organic Semiconductors

Most organic semiconductors (OSCs) consist of conjugated skeletons with flexible peripheral chains. Their weak intermolecular interactions from dispersion and induction forces result in environmental susceptibilities and are unsuitable for many multifunctional applications where direct exposure to external environments is unavoidable, such as gas absorption, chemical sensing, and catalysis. To exploit the advantages of inorganic semiconductors in OSCs, ion-in-conjugation (IIC) materials are proposed. An IIC material refers to any conjugated material (molecules, polymers, and crystals) in Kekule's structural formula containing stoichiometric ionic states in its conjugated backbone in the electronic ground state. In this review, the definitions, structures, synthesis, properties, and applications of IIC materials are described briefly. Four types of IIC material, including zwitterionic conjugated molecules/polymers, conjugated ionic dyes, π-d conjugated molecules and polymers, and coordinatively doped polymers, are reported. Their applications in gas sensing, humidity sensing, resistive memory devices, and thermal/photo-/electro-catalysis are demonstrated. The challenges and opportunities for future research are also discussed. It is expected that this work will inspire the design of new organic electronic information materials.

Flexible Metamaterial Electronics

Over the last decade, extensive efforts have been made on utilizing advanced materials and structures to improve the properties and functionalities of flexible electronics. While the conventional ways are approaching their natural limits, a revolutionary strategy, namely metamaterials, is emerging toward engineering structural materials to break the existing fetters. Metamaterials exhibit supernatural physical behaviors, in aspects of mechanical, optical, thermal, acoustic, and electronic properties that are inaccessible in natural materials, such as tunable stiffness or Poisson's ratio, manipulating electromagnetic or elastic waves, and topological and programmable morphability. These salient merits motivate metamaterials as a brand-new research direction and have inspired extensive innovative applications in flexible electronics. Here, such a groundbreaking interdisciplinary field is first coined as "flexible metamaterial electronics," focusing on enhancing and innovating functionalities of flexible electronics via the design of metamaterials. Herein, the latest progress and trends in this infant field are reviewed while highlighting their potential value. First, a brief overview starts with introducing the combination of metamaterials and flexible electronics. Then, the developed applications are discussed, such as self-adaptive deformability, ultrahigh sensitivity, and multidisciplinary functionality, followed by the discussion of potential prospects. Finally, the challenges and opportunities facing flexible metamaterial electronics to advance this cutting-edge field are summarized.

3D stretchable and self-encapsulated multimaterial triboelectric fibers

A robust power device for wearable technologies and soft electronics must feature good encapsulation, high deformability, and reliable electrical outputs. Despite substantial progress in materials and architectures for two-dimensional (2D) planar power configurations, fiber-based systems remain limited to relatively simple configurations and low performance due to challenges in processing methods. Here, we extend complex 2D triboelectric nanogenerator configurations to 3D fiber formats based on scalable thermal processing of water-resistant thermoplastic elastomers and composites. We perform mechanical analysis using finite element modeling to understand the fiber's deformation and the level of control and engineering on its mechanical behavior and thus to guide its dimensional designs for enhanced electrical performance. With microtexture patterned functional surfaces, the resulting fibers can reliably produce state-of-the-art electrical outputs from various mechanical deformations, even under harsh conditions. These mechanical and electrical attributes allow their integration with large and stretchable surfaces for electricity generation of hundreds of microamperes.

Stretchable Heterogeneous Polymer Networks of High Adhesion and Low Hysteresis

Adhesives are ubiquitous, but the mutual exclusion between hyperelasticity and adhesiveness impedes their uses in emerging techniques such as flexible/stretchable electronics. Herein, we propose a strategy to synthesize hyperelastic adhesives (HEAs), by designating hyperelasticity and adhesiveness to the bulk and the surface of a polymer network, respectively. The bulk is hyperelastic but nonadhesive, and the surface is viscoelastic but adhesive, while the HEA is hyperelastic and adhesive. We exemplify the principle by synthesizing poly(butyl acrylate) as the bulk and poly(butyl acrylate-co-isobornyl acrylate) as the surface. The resulting HEA exhibits a low hysteresis of 4% at 100% strain and an adhesion energy of 270 J m^-2. Moreover, the HEA is optically transparent, thermally stable, spontaneously adhesive to various materials, and mechanically stable against cyclic load, relaxation, and creep. We demonstrate two applications enabled by the unique combination of hyperelasticity and adhesiveness. The proposed strategy is generic, paving new avenues for stretchable yet resilient adhesives for diverse applications.

Smart Electronic Textile-Based Wearable Supercapacitors

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) have drawn significant attention from the scientific and engineering community as lightweight and comfortable next-generation wearable devices due to their ability to interface with the human body, and continuously monitor, collect, and communicate various physiological parameters. However, one of the major challenges for the commercialization and further growth of e-textiles is the lack of compatible power supply units. Thin and flexible supercapacitors (SCs), among various energy storage systems, are gaining consideration due to their salient features including excellent lifetime, lightweight, and high-power density. Textile-based SCs are thus an exciting energy storage solution to power smart gadgets integrated into clothing. Here, materials, fabrications, and characterization strategies for textile-based SCs are reviewed. The recent progress of textile-based SCs is then summarized in terms of their electrochemical performances, followed by the discussion on key parameters for their wearable electronics applications, including washability, flexibility, and scalability. Finally, the perspectives on their research and technological prospects to facilitate an essential step towards moving from laboratory-based flexible and wearable SCs to industrial-scale mass production are presented.

Fabric computing: Concepts, opportunities, and challenges

With the advent of the Internet of Everything, people can easily interact with their environments immersively. The idea of pervasive computing is becoming a reality, but due to the inconvenience of carrying silicon-based entities and a lack of fine-grained sensing capabilities for human-computer interaction, it is difficult to ensure comfort, esthetics, and privacy in smart spaces. Motivated by the rapid developments in intelligent fabric technology in the post-Moore era, we propose a novel computing approach that creates a paradigm shift driven by fabric computing and advocate a new concept of non-chip sensing in living spaces. We discuss the core notion and benefits of fabric computing, including its implementation, challenges, and future research opportunities.

Pathway to Developing Permeable Electronics

Permeable electronics possess the capability of permeating gas and/or liquid while performing the device functionality when attached to human bodies. The permeability of wearable electronics can not only minimize the thermophysiological disturbance to the human body but also ensure a biocompatible human-device interface for long-term, continuous, and real-time health monitoring. To date, how to simultaneously acquire high permeability and multifunctionality is the major challenge of wearable electronics. Here, a critical discussion on the future development of wearable electronics toward permeability is presented. In this perspective, the critical metrics of permeable electronics are discussed, and the historical evolution of wearable technologies is reviewed with highlights of representative examples. The materials and structural strategies for developing high-performance permeable electronics are then analyzed.

High-Strength and Extensible Electrospun Yarn for Wearable Electronics

Stretchable conductive yarns have received significant consideration in the direction of wearable and flexible electronics. Wearable electronic structures need strong materials to assure stability, durability, and an extensive range of strain to develop their applications. Therefore, manufacturing high-performance yarn-based devices with ultrarobustness and great stretchability with a simple, cost-effective, and scalable method remains a great challenge for wearable electronics. Here, a highly stretchable yarn with high performance is fabricated, which comprises a core TPU nanoyarn, successively decorated with a liquid metal (LM) layer, and a protective outer nanofiber layer. The ultrarobust (40 MPa) and high-strain (548%) conducting yarn presents potential applications in assembling strain sensors. Moreover, such a unique conductive yarn can be used as a highly deformable, stretchable conductor to charge a mobile phone or for data transfer, a sensor to monitor human activities, and as an effective control for a hand robot as well as for smart thermal management textile application. This research gives promising applications in the field of flexible and wearable electronics.
