Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Body mass index and waist circumference are simple measures of obesity. However, they do not distinguish between visceral and subcutaneous fat, or muscle, potentially leading to biased relationships between individual body composition parameters and adverse health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate prediction models for volumetric adipose and muscle. METHODS Based on cross-sectional data of 18,457, 18,260, and 17,052 White adults from the UK Biobank, we developed sex-specific equations to estimate visceral adipose tissue (VAT), abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (ASAT), and total thigh fat-free muscle (FFM) volumes, respectively. Volumetric magnetic resonance imaging served as the reference. We used the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and the extreme gradient boosting methods separately to fit three sequential models, the inputs of which included demographics and anthropometrics and, in some, bioelectrical impedance analysis parameters. We applied comprehensive metrics to assess model performance in the temporal validation set. RESULTS The equations that included more predictors generally performed better. Accuracy of the equations was moderate for VAT (percentage of estimates that differed <30% from the measured values, 70 to 78 in males, 64 to 69 in females) and good for ASAT (85 to 91 in males, 90 to 95 in females) and FFM (99 to 100 in both sexes). All the equations appeared precise (interquartile range of the difference, 0.89 to 1.76 L for VAT, 1.16 to 1.61 L for ASAT, 0.81 to 1.39 L for FFM). Bias of all the equations was negligible (-0.17 to 0.05 L for VAT, -0.10 to 0.12 L for ASAT, -0.07 to 0.09 L for FFM). The equations achieved superior cardiometabolic correlations compared with body mass index and waist circumference. CONCLUSIONS The developed equations to estimate VAT, ASAT, and FFM volumes achieved moderate to good performance. They may be cost-effective tools to revisit the implications of diverse body components.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), including cardiovascular disease (CVD), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and type 2 diabetes (T2D), are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The growing prevalence of CVD is mostly attributed to the aging population and common occurrence of risk factors, such as high systolic blood pressure, elevated plasma glucose, and increased body mass index, which led to a global epidemic of obesity, MetS, and T2D. Oxidant–antioxidant balance disorders largely contribute to the pathogenesis and outcomes of CMDs, such as systemic essential hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, and MetS. Enhanced and disturbed generation of reactive oxygen species in excess adipose tissue during obesity may lead to increased oxidative stress. Understanding the interplay between adiposity, oxidative stress, and cardiometabolic risks can have translational impacts, leading to the identification of novel effective strategies for reducing the CMDs burden. The present review article is based on extant results from basic and clinical studies and specifically addresses the various aspects associated with oxidant–antioxidant balance disorders in the course of CMDs in subjects with excess adipose tissue accumulation. We aim at giving a comprehensive overview of existing knowledge, knowledge gaps, and future perspectives for further basic and clinical research. We provide insights into both the mechanisms and clinical implications of effects related to the interplay between adiposity and oxidative stress for treating and preventing CMDs. Future basic research and clinical trials are needed to further examine the mechanisms of adiposity-enhanced oxidative stress in CMDs and the efficacy of antioxidant therapies for reducing risk and improving outcome of patients with CMDs.

Abstract
People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH) appear to be at an increased risk of sarcopenia, which can have a devastating effect on their life due to consequences such as physical disability, poor quality of life, and finally death. This systematic review examined sarcopenia prevalence and its associated factors in PLWH. A systematic search was conducted using the keywords in the online databases including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane databases from the dates of inception up to May 2022. The retrieved articles underwent a two-step title/abstract and full-text review process, and the eligible papers were selected and included in the qualitative synthesis. Data relating to the study population, purpose of study, gender, age, race, body mass index, medical history, paraclinical results and antiretroviral therapy as associated factors of sarcopenia were extracted. In addition, the prevalence of sarcopenia in PLWH and its promoting and reducing factors were also extracted. We reviewed the 14 related studies for identifying of sarcopenia prevalence and its associated factors in PLWH. The total number of PLWH in all the reviewed studies was 2592. There was no criterion for the minimum number of people with HIV and the lowest number of PLWH was 27, and the highest number was 860. Some studies reported a significantly higher prevalence of sarcopenia in HIV-infected individuals compared with HIV-negative controls as follows: 24.2-6.7%, 15-4% and 10-6%, respectively. We showed that, age (30-50 years), being female, >5 years post-HIV diagnosis, multiple vertebral fractures, cocaine/heroin use and lower gamma-glutamyl transferase level were the main promoting factors of sarcopenia. Higher educational level, employment, physical exercise, calf circumference >31 cm, and gait speed >0.8 m/s were also factors to reduce sarcopenia. Sarcopenia prevalence in PLWH is higher than HIV-negative population. Given the importance and prevalence of sarcopenia among PLWH and its associated consequences (i.e., mortality and disability), determining its risk factors is of great importance.

Abstract
AIM The present study explores the effects of Body Mass Index (BMI) on choroidal thickness, the deep and superficial retinal capillary plexuses, and the foveal avascular zone (FAZ). METHODS The subjects in this prospective study were divided into five groups based on their calculated BMI. Choroidal thickness, superficial and deep retinal capillary plexuses, and FAZ were measured using enhance depth imaging (EDI) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The groups were then compared and correlations with BMI were evaluated. RESULTS The study included 210 eyes of 105 subjects. The comparison of the BMI groups revealed a significant decrease in the mean choroidal thicknesses in the obese groups (p = 0.001), and a significant negative correlation between BMI and mean choroidal thickness (p = 0.02). The results of the analysis of the mean superficial and deep retinal capillary plexuses did not differ between the groups (p = 0.089, p = 0.808 respectively), while the deep FAZ measurements revealed a significant decrease in the obese groups (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION Choroidal thickness and deep FAZ are significantly negatively correlated with BMI, suggesting potential choroidal and retinal microvascular effects of obesity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In 1999, a set of highly accurate Polynesian-specific equations to estimate adult body fat from non-invasive field measures of age, sex, height, and weight (Equation 1), age, sex, height, weight, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) resistance (Equation 2), and age, sex, height, weight, and the sum of two skinfold thicknesses (Equation 3) were published. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the equation-based estimators in a sample of Samoan adults recruited 20 years later between 2017 and 2019. METHODS Age, sex, height, weight, BIA resistance, skinfold thickness, and fat mass as measured using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were available for 432 Samoan adults (mean age 50.9 years, 56% female) seen in 2017/2019. We compared equation-derived fat mass and DXA-derived fat mass using scatterplots and Pearson correlation coefficients. We then updated the equation coefficient estimates in a training set (2/3 of the sample) and evaluated the performance of the updated equations in a testing set (the remaining 1/3 of the sample). RESULTS Equation-derived fat mass was strongly correlated with DXA-derived fat mass for Equation (1) (r2 = 0.95, n = 432), Equation (2) (r2 = 0.97, n = 425), and Equation (3) (r2 = 0.95, n = 426). Updating the equation coefficient estimates resulted in mostly similar coefficients and nearly identical testing set performance for Equation (1) (r2 = 0.96, n = 153), Equation (2) (r2 = 0.98, n = 150), and Equation (3) (r2 = 0.96, n = 150). CONCLUSIONS The Polynesian-specific body fat estimation equations remained stable despite changing social and environmental factors and marked increase in obesity prevalence in Samoa.

Abstract
Background Obesity has been a major concern due to its increasing prevalence and associated metabolic complications. Body mass index (BMI) assesses general obesity, but it does not distinguish between muscle and fat accumulations, so using only BMI can lead to an erroneous result. Waist circumference (WC), a marker of central obesity, predicted mortality risk better than BMI. However, WC can be affected by abdominal distension, is time-consuming, and may not be culture-sensitive. Neck circumference (NC) is devoid of these disadvantages and is believed to be an index of upper body fat distribution. This study aimed to assess the association of neck circumference with general and central obesity and to identify the cut-off points for evaluating obesity in young adults using NC. Material and Methods Height, weight, waist, and hip circumference were measured to determine BMI and waist-hip ratio. NC was measured at the level of the mid-cervical spine and mid-anterior neck in a standing position with the arms hanging freely. For males with a laryngeal prominence, NC was measured just below the prominence. Results In total, 357 (170 male and 187 female) young, healthy Indian adults aged 18-25 participated. Neck circumference (NC) is significantly associated with BMI and WC in both genders. We found the best cut-off for male and female participants to be ≥34 cm and ≥30.5 cm, with a sensitivity of 88.3% and 84.4% for assessing obesity. Conclusion NC may be a better alternative to BMI and WC as a marker to assess obesity since it is more practical, simple, inexpensive, time-saving, and less invasive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Obesity may increase the risk of adverse events after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Although body mass index (BMI) is commonly used in categorizing obesity, its accuracy is limited. Body fat percentage (BFP) might indicate adiposity status and predict arthroplasty-related outcomes better than BMI. We investigated whether BFP is predictive of TKA-related outcomes. METHODS In this secondary analysis, BFP was measured preoperatively from 294 participants of a randomized trial that investigated the effects of tourniquet and anesthesia methods on TKA. Data concerning in-hospital assessments and events were collected. Knee range of motion (ROM) was measured, the Brief Pain Inventory-short form and Oxford Knee Score questionnaires were used to collect data on patient-reported pain and function, and the 15-dimensional health-related questionnaire was used to assess quality of life preoperatively and 3 and 12 months postoperatively. The patients reported satisfaction to TKA 3 and 12 months postoperatively. Data concerning infectious and thromboembolic events within 90 postoperative days and revision surgery, manipulation under anesthesia, and mortality within 1 year were collected. A separate post hoc analysis was performed for 399 participants to assess the effects of BMI on the respective outcomes. RESULTS A 1-unit increase in BFP affected the ROM by -0.37° (95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.60 to -0.13) 12 months after surgery. BFP was not significantly associated with the operation time or adverse events. However, the number of most adverse events remained too low for adjusted analysis. A 1-unit increase in BMI increased the operation time by 0.57 min (95% CI = 0.10 to 1.04) and affected the ROM by -0.47° (95% CI = -0.74 to -0.20) 12 months postoperatively. Neither BFP nor BMI was significantly associated with acute pain, pain management, length of stay, or with pain, function, quality of life, or satisfaction to TKA at 12 months after surgery. CONCLUSIONS BFP seems to be a poor predictor of in-hospital results and of patient-reported outcomes 1 year after TKA. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to verify the physiological and anthropometric determinants of triathlon performance in female and male athletes. This study included 40 triathletes (20 male and 20 female). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) was used to assess body composition, and an incremental cardiopulmonary test was used to assess physiological variables. A questionnaire about physical training habits was also completed by the athletes. Athletes competed in the Olympic-distance triathlon race. For the female group, the total race time can be predicted by V̇O2max (β = -131, t = -6.61, p < 0.001), lean mass (β = -61.4, t = -2.66, p = 0.018), and triathlon experience (β = -886.1, t = -3.01, p = 0.009) (r2 = 0.825, p < 0.05). For the male group, the total race time can be predicted by maximal aerobic speed (β = -294.1, t = -2.89, p = 0.010) and percentage of body fat (β = 53.6, t = 2.20, p = 0.042) (r2 = 0.578, p < 0.05). The variables that can predict the performance of men are not the same as those that can predict the triathlon performance of women. These data can help athletes and coaches develop performance-enhancing strategies.

Abstract
Introduction Background and aims: low muscle mass (LMM) conditions the nutritional status of an individual and has implications for quality of life and prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate body composition and determine normal values in the diagnosis of LMM in a control group of healthy individuals. Methods: a cross-sectional study of healthy volunteers aged 18 to 45 years with body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m2. A descriptive study was performed including demographic, clinical, anthropometric, and body composition variables (by bioimpedance, TANITA MC 780 MA; TANITA, Tokyo, Japan), stratified by age, sex and BMI. Values corresponding to -1/-2 standard deviations (SD) were determined to consider low muscle mass/function. Results: we included 67 patients, 71,60 % women, with a median age of 28.29 (IQR 4.05) years. Males presented higher weight, BMI, fat-free mass (FFM), muscle mass (MM), appendicular lean mass (ALM), appendicular lean mass index (ALMI), and dynamometry values when compared to females. The -1/-2 SD values of the various muscle parameters were determined according to sex. Conclusion: this study determined normal LMM values in healthy and young people, and the most commonly used indexes to express it, which will allow the diagnosis of LMM in disease-related situations using the corresponding -2 DS value.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator (CUN-BAE) index has been recommended as an ideal indicator of body fat and exhibited significant correlation with cardiometabolic risk factors. However, whether the CUN-BAE index correlates with incident diabetes in Asian populations is unknown. Therefore, this longitudinal study was designed to evaluate the association between baseline CUN-BAE index and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS This retrospective longitudinal study involved 15,464 participants of 18-79 years of age in the NAGALA (NAfld in the Gifu Area Longitudinal Analysis) study over the period of 2004-2015. Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to test the relationship between the baseline CUN-BAE index and diabetes incidence. Further stratification analysis was conducted to ensure that the results were robust. The diagnostic utility of the CUN-BAE index was tested by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS Over the course of an average follow-up of 5.4 years, 373 (2.41%) participants developed diabetes. A higher diabetes incidence was associated with higher CUN-BAE quartiles (P for trend< 0.001). Each 1 unit increase in CUN-BAE index was associated with a 1.08-fold and 1.14-fold increased risk of diabetes after adjustment for confounders in males and females, respectively (both P < 0.001). Stratification analysis demonstrated a consistent positive correlation between baseline CUN-BAE and diabetes incidence. Moreover, based on ROC analysis, CUN-BAE exhibited a better capacity for diabetes prediction than both body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS The baseline CUN-BAE level was independently related to the incidence of diabetes. Increased adiposity determined by CUN-BAE could be used as a strong nonlaboratory predictor of incident diabetes in clinical practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It was aimed to compare visceral adiposity index (VAI) levels in patients with normal bone mineral density (BMD), osteopenia, and osteoporosis. METHODS One hundred twenty postmenopausal women (40 with normal BMD, 40 with osteopenia, and 40 with osteoporosis) between the ages of 50 to 70 years were included in the study. For females, the VAI was calculated using the formula (waist circumference [WC]/[36.58 + (1.89 x body mass index (BMI))]) x (1.52/High-density lipoprotein [HDL]-cholesterol [mmol/L]) x (triglyceride [TG]/0.81 [mmol/L]). RESULTS The time of menopause from the beginning was similar in all groups. Waist circumference was found to be higher in those with normal BMD than in the osteopenic and osteoporotic groups (p = 0.018 and p < 0.001, respectively), and it was also higher in the osteopenic group than in the osteoporotic group (p = 0.003). Height and body weight, BMI, blood pressure, insulin, glucose, HDL-cholesterol, and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels were similar in all groups. Triglyceride levels were found to be higher in the normal BMD group, compared with the osteoporotic group (p = 0.005). The level of VAI was detected as higher in those with normal BMD, compared with the women with osteoporosis (p = 0.002). Additionally, the correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) spine T-scores, WC, VAI, and a negative correlation between DXA spine T-scores and age. CONCLUSION In our study, we found higher VAI levels in those with normal BMD, compared with women with osteoporosis. We consider that further studies with a larger sample size will be beneficial in elucidating the entity.

Abstract
The manual segmentation of muscles on magnetic resonance images is the gold standard procedure to reconstruct muscle volumes from medical imaging data and extract critical information for clinical and research purposes. (Semi)automatic methods have been proposed to expedite the otherwise lengthy process. These, however, rely on manual segmentations. Nonetheless, the repeatability of manual muscle volume segmentations performed on clinical MRI data has not been thoroughly assessed. When conducted, volumetric assessments often disregard the hip muscles. Therefore, one trained operator performed repeated manual segmentations (n = 3) of the iliopsoas (n = 34) and gluteus medius (n = 40) muscles on coronal T1-weighted MRI scans, acquired on 1.5 T scanners on a clinical population of patients elected for hip replacement surgery. Reconstructed muscle volumes were divided in sub-volumes and compared in terms of volume variance (normalized variance of volumes - nVV), shape (Jaccard Index-JI) and surface similarity (maximal Hausdorff distance-HD), to quantify intra-operator repeatability. One-way repeated measures ANOVA (or equivalent) tests with Bonferroni corrections for multiple comparisons were conducted to assess statistical significance. For both muscles, repeated manual segmentations were highly similar to one another (nVV: 2-6%, JI > 0.78, HD < 15 mm). However, shape and surface similarity were significantly lower when muscle extremities were included in the segmentations (e.g., iliopsoas: HD -12.06 to 14.42 mm, P < 0.05). Our findings show that the manual segmentation of hip muscle volumes on clinical MRI scans provides repeatable results over time. Nonetheless, extreme care should be taken in the segmentation of muscle extremities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for evaluating body composition. However, the reference ranges have not been established. METHODS Three lean tissue and seven adipose tissue parameters based on MRI data from the UK Biobank were used in this study. Participants with European ancestry and data on at least one parameter were screened. Age- and sex-specific percentile curves were generated using the lambda-mu-sigma method. Three levels of reference ranges were provided, which were equivalent to the mean ± 1 standard deviation (SD), 2 SDs and 2.5 SDs. RESULTS The final analysis set for each parameter ranged from 4842 to 14 148 participants (53.4%-56.6% women) with a median age of 61. For lean tissue parameters, compared with those at age 45, the median total lean tissue volume and total thigh fat-free muscle volume at age 70 were 2.83 and 1.73 L, and 3.02 and 1.51 L lower in men and women, respectively. The median weight-to-muscle ratios at age 45 were 0.51 and 0.83 kg/L lower compared with those at age 70 in men and women, respectively. Adipose tissue parameters showed inconsistent differences. In men, the median muscle fat infiltration, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume, total abdominal adipose tissue index and abdominal fat ratio were 1.48%, 0.32 L, 0.08 L/m2 and 0.4 higher, and the median abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (ASAT) volume and total adipose tissue volume were 0.47 and 0.41 L lower, respectively, at age 70 than at age 45. The median total trunk fat volume was approximately 9.53 L at all ages. In women, the median muscle fat infiltration and VAT volume were 1.68% and 0.76 L higher, respectively, at age 70 than at age 45. The median ASAT volume, total adipose tissue volume, total trunk fat volume, total abdominal adipose tissue index and abdominal fat ratio were 0.35 L, 0.78 L, 1.12 L, 0.49 L/m2 and 0.06 higher, respectively, at age 60 than at age 45. The medians of the former three parameters were 0.33 L, 0.14 L and 0.20 L lower, at age 70 than at age 60. The medians of the latter two parameters were approximately 3.64 L/m2 and 0.55 at ages between 60 and 70. CONCLUSIONS We have established reference ranges for MRI-measured body composition parameters in a large community-dwelling population. These findings provide a more accurate assessment of abnormal adipose and muscle conditions.

Abstract
Background Uncertainty persists about carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) as a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and the independent relevance of different measures of adiposity for CIMT. We assessed the independent relevance of general adiposity (body mass index), central adiposity (waist circumference), and body composition (fat mass index and fat-free mass index) with CIMT among adults in the United Kingdom. Methods and Results Multivariable linear regression of cross-sectional analyses of UK Biobank assessed the mean percentage difference in CIMT associated with equivalent differences in adiposity measures. To assess independent associations, body mass index and waist circumference were mutually adjusted, as were fat mass index and fat-free mass index. Among 39 367 participants (mean [SD] age 64 [8] years, 52% female, 97% White), median (interquartile range) CIMT was 0.65 (0.14) mm in women and 0.69 (0.18) mm in men. All adiposity measures were linearly and positively associated with CIMT after adjusting for confounders. Fat-free mass index was most strongly associated with CIMT after adjustment for fat mass index (% difference in CIMT: 1.23 [95% CI 0.93-1.53] women; 3.44 [3.01-3.86] men), while associations of fat mass index were attenuated after adjustment for fat-free mass index (0.28 [-0.02, 0.58] women; -0.59 [-0.99, -0.18] men). After mutual adjustment, body mass index remained positively associated with CIMT, but waist circumference was completely attenuated. Conclusions Fat-free mass index was the adiposity measure most strongly associated with CIMT, suggesting that CIMT may reflect vascular compensatory remodeling rather than atherosclerosis. Hence, screening for subclinical atherosclerosis should evaluate carotid plaques in addition to CIMT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of adipose tissue during adolescence may provide valuable insights into obesity-associated diseases. We propose an automated convolutional neural network (CNN) approach using Dixon-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to quantity abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in children and adolescents. METHODS 474 abdominal Dixon MRI scans of 136 young healthy volunteers (aged 8-18) were included in this study. For each scan, an axial fat-only Dixon image located at the L2-L3 disc space and another image at the L4-L5 disc space were selected for quantification. For each image, an outer and an inner region around the abdomen wall, as well as SAT and VAT pixel masks, were generated by expert readers as reference standards. A standard U-Net CNN architecture was then used to train two models: one for region segmentation and one for fat pixel classification. The performance was evaluated using the dice similarity coefficient (DSC) with fivefold cross-validation, and by Pearson correlation and the Student's t-test against the reference standards. RESULTS For the DSC results, means and standard deviations of the outer region, inner region, SAT, and VAT comparisons were 0.974 ± 0.026, 0.997 ± 0.003, 0.981 ± 0.025, and 0.932 ± 0.047, respectively. Pearson coefficients were 1.000 for both outer and inner regions, and 1.000 and 0.982 for SAT and VAT comparisons, respectively (all p = NS). CONCLUSION These results show that our method not only provides excellent agreement with the reference SAT and VAT measurements, but also accurate abdominal wall region segmentation. The proposed combined region- and pixel-based CNN approach provides automated abdominal wall segmentation as well as SAT and VAT quantification with Dixon MRI and enables objective longitudinal assessment of adipose tissues in children during adolescence.

OBJETIVE To assess the association of gestational age (GA) and intrauterine growth with body composition at 11 years of age. The exposures of interest were the gestational index (GA) of infants born at less than 33 weeks, from 34 to 36 and from 37 to 41, and intrauterine growth categorized as small (SGA), adequate (AGA) and large (LGA) for gestational age. Analysis of variance was used to compare means and linear regression was used to assess the strength of association. The analyses were adjusted according to variables collected at birth, such as monthly family income, maternal characteristics - education, age, pre-gestational body mass index (BMI), weight gain during pregnancy, smoking during pregnancy, type of delivery, and parity - and adolescent characteristics - skin color and birth weight. For analysis, FM and FMI underwent logarithmic transformation due to data asymmetry. RESULTS A total of 3,401 adolescents were analyzed, including boys and girls born at less than 33 weeks, with lower FM and FFM means than those born at term. However, in the adjusted analyses, there was no association between GA and any of the outcomes in either sex. LGA boys had a 10.5% higher FMI (p = 0.026) and +0.3 BMI/age Z-score (p = 0.019) as compared to AGA boys, and LGA girls had +0.3 kg/m 2 of FFMI (p = 0.039) than AGA girls. CONCLUSION GA was not associated with body composition at 11 years of age. However, LGA boys had higher BMI and BMI/age Z-score, and LGA girls had higher FFMI than AGA girls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Centenarians often represent one of the best examples of aging successfully. However, the role of body composition or hydration status assessed with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is poorly explored in this population. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to better understand the use and the role of BIA for evaluating body composition and hydration status in centenarians. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of the literature up to the 1st of May, 2022 for published articles providing data on BIA to evaluate body composition parameters or hydration status in centenarians. Data were summarized descriptively because a meta-analysis was not possible due to the scarcity of available studies. RESULTS Among 2222 articles screened, four were eligible including 291 centenarians (mean age: 100.5 years) who were mainly women (88%). In one study, BIA overestimated fat-free mass and underestimated fat mass when compared to deuterium oxide dilution. Another study carried out in Italy including 14 centenarians found a significant correlation between BIA and fat-free mass evaluated using anthropometric tools. In one study, BIA showed a significant agreement with anthropometric measures of fat mass. In the same sample, sarcopenia and dehydration, evaluated with BIA, had a high prevalence. CONCLUSION BIA may be used for assessing body composition in centenarians, but research is limited to a few studies suggesting the need of future research in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) patients are at risk for metabolic abnormalities and commonly experience overweight and obesity. Possibly, weight issues result from lowered resting energy expenditure (EE) and impaired muscle oxidative metabolism. OBJECTIVES This study aims to assess EE, body composition, and muscle oxidative capacity in patients with DM1 compared to age-, sex- and BMI-matched controls. METHODS A prospective case control study was conducted including 15 DM1 patients and 15 matched controls. Participants underwent state-of-the-art methodologies including 24 h whole room calorimetry, doubly labeled water and accelerometer analysis under 15-days of free-living conditions, muscle biopsy, full body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), computed tomography (CT) upper leg, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. RESULTS Fat ratio determined by full body MRI was significantly higher in DM1 patients (56 [49-62] %) compared to healthy controls (44 [37-52] % ; p = 0.027). Resting EE did not differ between groups (1948 [1742-2146] vs (2001 [1853-2425>] kcal/24 h, respectively; p = 0.466). In contrast, total EE was 23% lower in DM1 patients (2162 [1794-2494] vs 2814 [2424-3310] kcal/24 h; p = 0.027). Also, DM1 patients had 63% less steps (3090 [2263-5063] vs 8283 [6855-11485] steps/24 h; p = 0.003) and a significantly lower VO2 peak (22 [17-24] vs 33 [26-39] mL/min/kg; p = 0.003) compared to the healthy controls. Muscle biopsy citrate synthase activity did not differ between groups (15.4 [13.3-20.0] vs 20.1 [16.6-25.8] μM/g/min, respectively; p = 0.449). CONCLUSIONS Resting EE does not differ between DM1 patients and healthy, matched controls when assessed under standardized circumstances. However, under free living conditions, total EE is substantially reduced in DM1 patients due to a lower physical activity level. The sedentary lifestyle of DM1 patients seems responsible for the undesirable changes in body composition and aerobic capacity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Maternal body composition may influence fetal body composition. OBJECTIVE The objective of this pilot study was to investigate the relationship between maternal and fetal body composition. METHODS Three pregnant women cohorts were studied: healthy, gestational diabetes (GDM), and fetal growth restriction (FGR). Maternal body composition (visceral adipose tissue volume (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue volume (SAT), pancreatic and hepatic proton-density fat fraction (PDFF) and fetal body composition (abdominal SAT and hepatic PDFF) were measured using MRI between 30 to 36 weeks gestation. RESULTS Compared to healthy and FGR fetuses, GDM fetuses had greater hepatic PDFF (5.2 [4.2, 5.5]% vs. 3.2 [3, 3.3]% vs. 1.9 [1.4, 3.7]%, p = 0.004). Fetal hepatic PDFF was associated with maternal SAT (r = 0.47, p = 0.02), VAT (r = 0.62, p = 0.002), and pancreatic PDFF (r = 0.54, p = 0.008). When controlling for maternal SAT, GDM increased fetal hepatic PDFF by 0.9 ([0.51, 1.3], p = 0.001). CONCLUSION In this study, maternal SAT, VAT, and GDM status were positively associated with fetal hepatic PDFF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Aging is associated with changes in body composition. Excess adiposity among older adults has been linked with metabolic syndromes and aggravated age-associated decline in physical functioning. Few longitudinal studies have explored the association between dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived total as well as central adiposity measures and frailty. We examined the association of DXA-derived total and central adiposity with pre-frailty/frailty among Norwegian adults after 8 years of follow-up. DESIGN Prospective observational study. SETTING Community-dwelling adults from Tromsø, Norway. MEASUREMENTS Adiposity was defined by fat mass index (FMI) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass assessed using DXA measures. Frailty status was assessed by low grip strength, slow walking speed, exhaustion, unintentional weight loss and low physical activity level. Pre-frail and frail participants at baseline were excluded. Sex-stratified multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate the association. RESULTS Participants comprised 234 women (mean age 68 years) and 146 men (mean age 69 years) attending the population-based Tromsø Study in 2007-2008 (Tromsø6) and 2015-2016 (Tromsø7). At the end of follow-up, 25.6% of the women and 27.4% of the men were pre-frail/frail. Compared with women in the lowest tertiles, those in the highest tertile of baseline FMI (odds ratio [OR] 4.42, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.88-10.35) and VAT mass (OR 2.47, 95% CI 1.10-5.50), respectively had higher odds for pre-frailty/frailty at follow-up. CONCLUSION We found a higher likelihood of pre-frailty/frailty in later years among women with general and central adiposity in adulthood, highlighting the importance of preventing excess adiposity for healthy aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated the correlation between visceral fat area (VFA) and early postoperative complications in patients with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between VFA and early postoperative complications in patients with obesity following bariatric surgery. METHODS The study was conducted at a tertiary university hospital. Patients with obesity who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy between June 2016 and October 2020 were divided into two groups based on umbilical level VFA: high-VFA group (umbilical level VFA ≥ 100 cm2) and low-VFA group (umbilical level VFA < 100 cm2). Baseline characteristics, intraoperative and postoperative conditions, and early postoperative complications were compared between the groups. The primary outcome was early postoperative complications, and the secondary outcome was postoperative hospital stay. RESULTS The study included 152 patients, with 82 patients in the low-VFA group and 70 patients in the high-VFA group. The high-VFA group had a higher incidence of early postoperative complications (14.29% vs. 2.44%, P = 0.013) than the low-VFA group. The length of postoperative hospital stay did not differ significantly between the groups. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that excess VFA is an independent risk factor for early postoperative complications following bariatric surgery, and VFA may be used in preoperative evaluations.

Abstract
abstract This study aimed to develop and validate the first mathematical models, based on anthropometric properties, to estimate fat mass (FM) in a heterogeneous sample of female adolescents. A cross-sectional and quantitative study conducted with 196 individuals aged 12 to 17 years from the metropolitan region of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: regression sample (n = 169) and validation sample (n = 27). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used as the reference method to determine body fat in relative and absolute values. Stature, body mass, waist girth and triceps, subscapular, biceps, iliac crest, abdominal, front thigh and medial calf skinfold thickness were defined as independent variables and measured according to an international technical protocol. Statistical analyzes used the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression model, paired t test and Pearson correlation. Four multivariate mathematical models with high determination coefficients (R2 ≥90%) and low estimated standard errors (SEE = ≤2.02 kg) were developed. Model 4 stands out for its low number of independent variables and significant statistical performance (R2 = 90%; SEE = 1.92 kg). It is concluded that the four mathematical models developed are valid for estimating FM in female adolescents in southern Brazil.

Abstract
Background Individuals with high body fat have a higher risk of mortality. Numerous anthropometric-based predictive equations are available for body composition assessments; furthermore, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) estimates are available. However, in older adults, the validity of body fat estimates requires further investigation. Objective To assess the agreement between percentage body fat (BF%) estimates by BIA and five predictive equations based on anthropometric characteristics using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as reference method. A secondary objective was to identify whether excluding short-stature women improves the agreement of BF% estimates in a group of community-dwelling, older Mexican women. Methods A concordance analysis of BF% was performed. A total of 121 older women participated in the study. Anthropometric information, BIA, and DXA body composition estimates were obtained. Five equations using anthropometric data were evaluated in order to determine body fat percentage (BF%) using DXA as reference method. Paired t-test comparisons and standard error of estimates (SEE) were obtained. The Bland-Altman plot with 95% limits of agreement and the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) were used to evaluate the BF% prediction equations and BIA estimates. Results The mean age of the study participants was 73.7 (±5.8) years old. BIA and the anthropometric based equations examined showed mean significant differences when tested in the entire sample. For the taller women (height > 145 cm), no significant difference in the paired comparison was found between DXA and BIA of BF% estimates. The mean BF% was 40.3 (±4.8) and 40.7 (±6.2) for DXA and BIA, respectively. The concordance between methods was good (CCC 0.814), (SEE 2.62). Also, in the taller women subset, the Woolcott equation using waist-to-height ratio presented no significant difference in the paired comparison; however, the error of the estimates was high (SEE 3.37) and the concordance was moderate (CCC 0.693). Conclusion This study found that BIA yielded good results in the estimation of BF% among women with heights over 145 cm. Also, in this group, the Woolcott predictive equation based on waist circumference and height ratio showed no significant differences compared to DXA in the paired comparison; however, the large error of estimates observed may limit its application. In older women, short stature may impact the validity of the body fat percentage estimates of anthropometric-based predictive equations.

Abstract
This double-blind, randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Bifidobacterium breve B-3 (BB-3) for reducing body fat. Healthy individuals were randomized into the BB-3 or placebo group (1:1). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to evaluate body fat reduction objectively. In the BB-3 group, body weight was lower than before BB-3 ingestion. Regarding waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist/hip circumference ratio, waist circumference and hip circumference were lower in the BB-3 group than in the placebo group at 12 weeks; the waist/hip circumference ratio was found to decrease at each visit in the BB-3 group, although there was no significant difference in the amount of change after 12 weeks. BB-3 did not cause any severe adverse reactions. Body fat was significantly lower in the BB-3 group than in the placebo group. In conclusion, ingesting BB-3 significantly reduces body weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference. Thus, BB-3 is safe and effective for reducing body fat.

Abstract
Phase angle (PhA) is a recently proposed marker of nutritional status in many clinical conditions. Its use in patients with obesity presents different critical concerns due to the higher variability of the two measured parameters (resistance, R, and reactance, Xc) that contribute to the determination of PhA. Controversial is the relation between PhA and BMI that might vary with graded levels of obesity due to the variation in fat and free fat mass. Obesity is frequently associated with metabolic, hepatic, cardiovascular and kidney diseases that introduce variations in PhA values, in relation to multimorbidity and severity degree of these diseases. It is reported that the improvement of clinical condition is associated with a positive change in PhA. Also, the treatment of obesity with weight loss might confirm this effect, but with different responses in relation to the type and duration of the intervention applied. In fact, the effect appears not only related to the percentage of weight loss but also the possible loss of free fat mass and the nutritional, metabolic and structural modifications that might follow each therapeutic approach to decrease body weight. We can conclude that the PhA could be used as marker of health status in patients with obesity supporting an appropriate weight loss intervention to monitor efficacy and fat free mass preservation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES/INTRODUCTION It is imperative to accurately estimate whole body fat percentage (%fat) to understand the deleterious nature of excess adiposity on cardiometabolic disease risk. Cost and accessibility often preclude the use of advanced imaging methods like dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Relative fat mass (RFM) is an emerging estimator of whole body %fat based on waist circumference, height, and biological sex. The purpose of this ancillary study was to examine the relationship between RFM and gold-standard measures of adiposity among community-dwelling older adults with obesity and to evaluate if changes in RFM reflect changes in %fat following a 12-month lifestyle intervention (clinicaltrials.gov #NCT00955903). PATIENTS/MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants (N = 163, 37.4% male, 70.3 ± 4.7 years) were randomized to the exercise only group, exercise + nutrient-dense weight maintenance group, or exercise + nutrient-dense energy restriction of 500 kcal/d group. Total and regional adiposity assessed by DXA and MRI, as well as anthropometrics, were evaluated at baseline and 12 months. RESULTS RFM was significantly positively correlated with DXA whole body %fat and DXA trunk %fat at baseline. Equivalence testing revealed that RFM was considered equivalent to DXA whole body %fat for females only. Additionally, from baseline to 12 months, a significant reduction in RFM was observed among female participants in the exercise + energy restriction group only. Changes in RFM were significantly correlated with changes in DXA whole body %fat, DXA trunk fat, and total abdominal fat tissue determined by MRI. CONCLUSION Results support the use of RFM as an estimate of whole body %fat where advanced imaging techniques are not feasible. Furthermore, results suggest that this index is sensitive to changes in fat mass over 12 months in female older adults with obesity. KEY MESSAGESRelative fat mass (RFM), an emerging estimator of whole body %fat based on waist circumference, height, and biological sex, was intentionally developed to be a simple estimate of adiposity that overcomes limitations of measures like body mass index.In the current study, results from correlations and agreement analyses support the use of RFM to estimate whole-body fat percentage in a community-dwelling older adult population with obesity when advanced methods, namely dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, are not feasible.Significant reductions in RFM were also observed over a 12-month period that was significantly correlated with changes in whole body fat percentage; thus, supporting the sensitivity of RFM to lifestyle changes.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the body composition profile of candidates applying for a Physical Education and Sports major. 327 young adults (F: 87, M: 240) participated in this cross-sectional study. Nutritional status and body composition analysis were performed, and the profiles were generated using an unsupervised machine learning algorithm. Body mass index (BMI), percentage of fat mass (%FM), percentage of muscle mass (%MM), metabolic age (MA), basal metabolic rate (BMR), and visceral fat level (VFL) were used as input variables. BMI values were normal-weight although VFL was significantly higher in men (<0.001; η2 = 0.104). MA was positively correlated with BMR (0.81 [0.77, 0.85]; p < 0.01), BMI (0.87 [0.84, 0.90]; p < 0.01), and VFL (0.77 [0.72, 0.81]; p < 0.01). The hierarchical clustering analysis revealed two significantly different age-independent profiles: Cluster 1 (n = 265), applicants of both sexes that were shorter, lighter, with lower adiposity and higher lean mass; and, Cluster 2 (n = 62), a group of overweight male applicants with higher VFL, taller, with lower %MM and estimated energy expended at rest. We identified two profiles that might help universities, counselors and teachers/lecturers to identify applicants in which is necessary to increase physical activity levels and improve dietary habits.

Abstract
Obesity and associated morbidities, metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) included, constitute some of the largest public health threats worldwide. Body composition and related risk factors are known to be heritable and identification of their genetic determinants may aid in the development of better prevention and treatment strategies. Recently, large-scale whole-body MRI data has become available, providing more specific measures of body composition than anthropometrics such as body mass index. Here, we aimed to elucidate the genetic architecture of body composition, by conducting genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of these MRI-derived measures. We ran both univariate and multivariate GWAS on fourteen MRI-derived measurements of adipose and muscle tissue distribution, derived from scans from 33,588 White European UK Biobank participants (mean age of 64.5 years, 51.4% female). Through multivariate analysis, we discovered 100 loci with distributed effects across the body composition measures and 241 significant genes primarily involved in immune system functioning. Liver fat stood out, with a highly discoverable and oligogenic architecture and the strongest genetic associations. Comparison with 21 common cardiometabolic traits revealed both shared and specific genetic influences, with higher mean heritability for the MRI measures (h2 = .25 vs. .13, p = 1.8x10-7). We found substantial genetic correlations between the body composition measures and a range of cardiometabolic diseases, with the strongest correlation between liver fat and type 2 diabetes (rg = .49, p = 2.7x10-22). These findings show that MRI-derived body composition measures complement conventional body anthropometrics and other biomarkers of cardiometabolic health, highlighting the central role of liver fat, and improving our knowledge of the genetic architecture of body composition and related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Body composition analysis is a valuable tool for assessing and monitoring the nutritional status of children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). This study was designed to compare the consistency of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), as the gold standard method for assessing body composition in clinical practice when treating children with type II and III SMA. METHODS From 2019 to 2021, we performed a retrospective analysis of body composition by DXA and BIA measurement methods in patients with type II and III SMA treated at a Chinese tertiary children's hospital. Fat mass (FM), muscle mass (MM), bone mineral content (BMC), and visceral fat area (VFA) were compared using paired sample t-tests. We calculated Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) and Spearman correlation coefficient to verify the correlation between DXA and BIA measurements. Bland-Altman analysis was used to assess the consistency of the two methods. RESULTS Fifty-seven children with type II and III SMA were recruited. Compared with body composition measured by DXA, the average FM measured by BIA is significantly lower (P <0.001), whereas the average MM, BMC, and VFA measured by BIA are significantly higher (P < 0.001) in children with SMA. Overall, the difference between MM (Delta [BIA-DAX] = 1.6 kg) and FM (Delta [BIA-DAX] = -1.6 kg) measured by DXA and BIA was minor, whereas the difference of VFA (Delta [BIA-DAX] = -43.5 cm) was significantly large. Correlation analysis indicated a substantial correlation of MM (CCC = 0.96 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.93-0.98], r = 0.967 [P < 0.0001]) and FM (CCC = 0.95 [95% CI = 0.92-0.97], r = 0.953 [P < 0.0001]), and poor correlation of BMC (CCC = 0.61 [95% CI = 0.42-0.75], r = 0.612 [P < 0.0001]) and VFA (CCC = 0.54 [95% CI = 0.33-0.70], r = 0.689 [P < 0.0001]) measurements between the two methods. The Bland-Altman analysis suggests that the majority of participants were within LOA. In addition, differences in MM and VFA measurements between BIA and DAX increased according to patients' increasing height, whereas differences in FM and BMC did not differ with height. CONCLUSION BIA overestimates MM and underestimates the FM, BMC, and VFA in children with SMA compared with DXA measurements. Overall, the non-invasive, easy-to-use, and repeatable BIA measurements were found to be in good agreement with DXA measurements, especially for FM and MM, which are essential parameters for the nutritional evaluation of children with SMA.

Abstract
People can develop eating disorders due to excessive body image concerns. The primary objective of this study was to examine the relationship between attention to body shape, social physique anxiety, and personal characteristics in a sample of Brazilians. The secondary objective was to evaluate the correlation of the constructs with the participants' body composition. First, 1795 individuals (70% female; Mage = 25.5 ± 6.6 years) completed the Attention to Body Shape Scale, the Social Physique Anxiety Scale, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Then, 286 participants (58% female; Mage = 25.3 ± 5.7 years) underwent a bioimpedance exam to identify body composition. Structural equation modeling was used to estimate the relationship between the variables. The greater the attention to body shape, the greater the expectations of negative physical evaluation and the less comfort with physical presentation. Younger age, female gender, consumption of supplements/substances for body change, restrictive diets, physical inactivity, poor self-assessment of food quality, and overweight/obesity were related to negative body concerns. An expectation of negative physical evaluation was positively correlated with body fat and negatively with muscle mass. Comfort with physical presentation was negatively correlated with fat and positively with muscle. These results can support preventive strategies aimed at reducing eating disorders resulting from body image concerns.

Abstract
Background This study examined associations between body composition and physical fitness scores among medical students in Shenyang, China. Methods A total of 2291 medical students aged 18–20 (815 male and 1476 female) in Shenyang of China were recruited to participate in the research in May 2019. With the use of the BCA-1B body composition analyzer and standard method of physical fitness assessment, the body composition and seven measures of physical fitness (body mass index, vital capacity, sit and reach, standing long jump, pull-ups/crunches, 50-m sprint, and 800/1000-m run) of college students were measured, respectively. The associations between body composition and physical fitness scores were assessed using multiple linear regression analysis. Results The height, weight, total body water, protein mass, mineral content, body mass index, vital capacity, and body function scores of male students were significantly higher than those of female students. However, fat mass (FM), body shape score, physical quality score, and total physical fitness score of female students were significantly higher than those of male students. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis indicated that in male students, only FM was negatively associated with body shape score, body function score, physical quality score, and total physical fitness score. In female students, FM was associated with lower body shape scores, physical quality scores, and total physical fitness scores. Furthermore, the ratio of overweight to obesity in male students was significantly higher than that in female students. Conclusions In Chinese medical colleges, the physical fitness level of female students is better than that of male students, and a higher FM was significantly associated with worse physical fitness of medical students. Moreover, male students with a higher rate of overweight and obesity are an important group that needs weight control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While exercise training is beneficial in the prevention and management of many chronic diseases, the role of exercise training in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease is less understood. We sought to determine the safety and efficacy of exercise training in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease. METHODS We conducted a systematic search of the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Web of Science and SportDiscus. We included randomised controlled trials that incorporated an exercise intervention compared with a non-exercising comparator group and examined safety and efficacy in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease. A descriptive analysis of the included trials was then conducted. RESULTS A total of 9 articles from 6 trials (642 participants with varying conditions and disease severity) were included. Significant variability of study participants and outcomes were observed across the trials. No adverse events linked to the exercise interventions were stated. The articles reported numerous positive changes to clinically relevant fitness measures. Exercise capacity improved with exercise training in 3 of 4 trials in which it was measured. Cardiorespiratory fitness showed improvements in 3 of 4 trials. Neuromuscular fitness increased in 1 of 2 trials. Physiological and metabolic parameters were improved, and negative changes were not observed to several clinically important measures (e.g. muscular oxygenation, cardiac measures) in 2 of 2 trials. Physical activity increased in 1 of 3 trials. No articles reported on changes in measures of body composition. Outcomes are varied with little consensus on measurements or assessment methods. CONCLUSIONS Exercise training appears to be safe and efficacious for improving physical fitness in children and adolescents with congenital heart disease who have been appropriately screened by their medical team. However, the certainty of the evidence for these findings is low to moderate.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Anti-hypertensive and lipid lowering therapy addresses only half of the cardiovascular disease risk in patients with body mass index > 30 kg/m2, i.e., obesity. We examine newer aspects of obesity pathobiology that underlie the partial effectiveness of anti-hypertensive lipid lowering therapy for the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk in obesity. RECENT FINDINGS Obesity-related insulin resistance, vascular endothelium dysfunction, increased sympathetic nervous system/renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activity, and glomerulopathy lead to type 2 diabetes, coronary atherosclerosis, and chronic disease kidney disease that besides hypertension and dyslipidemia increase cardiovascular disease risk. Obesity increases cardiovascular disease risk through multiple pathways. Optimal reduction of cardiovascular disease risk in patients with obesity is likely to require therapy targeted at both obesity and obesity-associated conditions.

Effect of the e-health supported INTER-ACT lifestyle intervention on postpartum weight retention and body composition, and associations with lifestyle behavior: A randomized controlled trial. Abstract
We investigated whether a postpartum lifestyle intervention reduced postpartum weight retention (PPWR) and improved body composition, and whether improved lifestyle was associated with less PPWR and improved body composition. A total of 1075 women with excessive gestational weight gain were randomized into the intervention (N = 551) or control (N = 524) group. A completion rate of 76% was reached. Anthropometrics and lifestyle data were collected at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. The e-health supported intervention consisted of 4 face-to-face coaching's, focusing on nutrition, exercise and mental wellbeing and using motivational interviewing and behavior change techniques. In the intervention group we observed; larger decrease in weight in women who reduced their energy intake (mean ± SD: 3.1 ± 4.2 kg vs. 2.2 ± 3.8 kg, P = 0.05) and decreased uncontrolled eating (3.5 ± 4.2 kg vs. 1.9 ± 3.7 kg, P ≤0.001) by the end of the intervention; larger decrease in fat percentage in women who reduced energy intake (2.3% ± 2.9 vs. 1.4% ± 2.7, P = 0.01), enhanced restrained eating (2.2% ± 3 vs. 1.4% ± 2.6, P = 0.02) and decreased uncontrolled eating (2.3% ± 2.9 vs. 1.5% ± 2.7, P = 0.01) and larger decrease in waist circumference in women who reduced energy intake (4.6 cm ± 4.8 vs. 3.3 cm ± 4.7, P = 0.01), enhanced restrained eating (4.5 cm ± 4.8 vs. 3.4 cm ± 4.8, P = 0.05) and decreased uncontrolled eating (4.7 cm ± 4.8 vs. 3.3 cm ± 4.8, P = 0.006), compared to those who did not. Improved energy intake, restrained eating and uncontrolled eating behavior were associated with more favorable outcomes in weight and body composition. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier:NCT02989142.

Abstract
Background: Obesity is chronic health problem. Screening for the obesity phenotype is limited by the availability of practical methods. Methods: We determined the reproducibility and accuracy of an automated machine-learning method using smartphone camera-enabled capture and analysis of single, two-dimensional (2D) standing lateral digital images to estimate fat mass (FM) compared to dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in females and males. We also report the first model to predict abdominal FM using 2D digital images. Results: Gender-specific 2D estimates of FM were significantly correlated (p < 0.001) with DXA FM values and not different (p > 0.05). Reproducibility of FM estimates was very high (R2 = 0.99) with high concordance (R2 = 0.99) and low absolute pure error (0.114 to 0.116 kg) and percent error (1.3 and 3%). Bland−Altman plots revealed no proportional bias with limits of agreement of 4.9 to −4.3 kg and 3.9 to −4.9 kg for females and males, respectively. A novel 2D model to estimate abdominal (lumbar 2−5) FM produced high correlations (R2 = 0.99) and concordance (R2 = 0.99) compared to DXA abdominal FM values. Conclusions: A smartphone camera trained with machine learning and automated processing of 2D lateral standing digital images is an objective and valid method to estimate FM and, with proof of concept, to determine abdominal FM. It can facilitate practical identification of the obesity phenotype in adults.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the association between ultra-processed food consumption at 23–25 years of age and measurements of body composition–fat mass, fat mass distribution and lean mass at 37–39 years of age in Brazilian adults. Methods 1978/1979 birth cohort study conducted with healthy adults from Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 1,021 individuals participated in the fat mass analysis (measured by air displacement plethysmography) and 815 in the lean mass analysis and fat mass distribution (assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry). Food consumption was evaluated by a food frequency questionnaire. Food items were grouped according to the level of processing as per the NOVA classification. Ultra-processed food consumption was expressed as a percentage of total daily intake (g/day). Linear regression models were used to estimate the effect of ultra-processed food consumption (g/day) on body mass index, body fat percentage, fat mass index, android fat, gynoid fat, android-gynoid fat ratio, lean mass percentage, lean mass index and appendicular lean mass index. Marginal plots were produced to visualize interactions. Results The mean daily ultra-processed food consumption in grams was 35.8% (813.3 g). There was an association between ultra-processed food consumption and increase in body mass index, body fat percentage, fat mass index, android fat and gynoid fat and decrease in lean mass percentage, only in women. Conclusion A high ultra-processed food consumption is associated with a long-term increase in fat mass and a decrease in lean mass in adult women.

Abstract
Many studies support the link between parental obesity and the predisposition to develop adult-onset metabolic syndromes that include obesity, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and diabetes in the offspring. As the prevalence of obesity increases in persons of childbearing age, so does metabolic syndrome in their descendants. Understanding how parental obesity alters metabolic programs in the progeny, predisposing them to adult-onset metabolic syndrome, is key to breaking this cycle. This review explores the basis for altered metabolism of offspring exposed to overnutrition by focusing on critical developmental processes influenced by parental obesity. We draw from human and animal model studies, highlighting the adaptations in metabolism that occur during normal pregnancy that become maladaptive with obesity. We describe essential phases of development impacted by parental obesity that contribute to long-term alterations in metabolism in the offspring. These encompass gamete formation, placentation, adipogenesis, pancreas development, and development of brain appetite control circuits. Parental obesity alters the developmental programming of these organs in part by inducing epigenetic changes with long-term consequences on metabolism. While exposure to parental obesity during any of these phases is sufficient to alter long-term metabolism, offspring often experience multiple exposures throughout their development. These insults accumulate to increase further the susceptibility of the offspring to the obesogenic environments of modern society.

Abstract
The prevalence of childhood obesity in the world is significant and it is topical issue due to the high risk of chronic non-communicable diseases development. This article presents the analysis of pathogenetic role of visceral obesity, describes modern methods for measuring visceral adipose tissue, discusses major terminology on obesity. The current data on inflammation induced by excess of visceral adipose tissue and inflammasome’s role in this process are summed up. All the findings are crucial for the development of tools for prevention any obesity associated adverse effects in children.

Abstract
Increasing evidence has shown adverse effects of loneliness on cardiometabolic health. The neuromodulator and hormone oxytocin has traditionally been linked with social cognition and behaviour. However, recent implications of the oxytocin system in energy metabolism and the overrepresentation of metabolic issues in psychiatric illness suggests that oxytocin may represent a mechanism bridging mental and somatic traits. To clarify the role of the oxytocin signalling system in the link between cardiometabolic risk factors and loneliness, we calculated the contribution of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the oxytocin signalling pathway gene-set (154 genes) to the polygenic architecture of loneliness and body mass index (BMI). We investigated the associations of these oxytocin signalling pathway polygenic scores with body composition measured using body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), bone mineral density (BMD), haematological markers, and blood pressure in a sample of just under half a million adults from the UK Biobank (BMD subsample n = 274,457; body MRI subsample n = 9796). Our analysis revealed significant associations of the oxytocin signalling pathway polygenic score for BMI with abdominal subcutaneous fat tissue, HDL cholesterol, lipoprotein(a), triglycerides, and BMD. We also found an association between the oxytocin signalling pathway polygenic score for loneliness and apolipoprotein A1, the major protein component of HDL. Altogether, these results provide additional evidence for the oxytocin signalling pathway's role in energy metabolism, lipid homoeostasis, and bone density, and support oxytocin's complex pleiotropic effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adiposity evaluated by body mass index (BMI) is associated with glycometabolism. The aim of the investigation was to explore the correlation of visceral fat area (VFA), body fat percentage (BFP), BMI and waist circumference (WC) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and pre-diabetes. METHODS A total of 18,458 participates underwent physical examination in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital from January 2018 to April 2022 was included in this study. Data were collected retrospectively. Regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship of VFA, BFP, WC and BMI with diabetes status, fasting blood glucose (FBG) and glycohemoglobin (HbA1c). RESULTS After fully adjusted for multiple covariates, VFA, BFP, WC and BMI in T2DM and pre-diabetes group exceeded compared with normal group. FBG was positively correlated with VFA, BFP, WC and BMI with βs of 2.221,0.306,0.606 and 0.175(p < 0.001). HbA1c was also positively correlated with the four indexes with βs of 2.645, 0.328, 0.685 and 0.255(p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis shown that FBG and HbA1c were positively correlated with VFA, BFP, BMI and WC in normal and pre-diabetes group (p < 0.001). FBG was negatively correlated with BMI in T2DM group (p = 0.023). In T2DM, there were non-linear relationships of HbA1c with VFA, BFP, WC and BMI with the inflection points for about 7%. Before the inflection point, HbA1c was positively correlated with obesity-related indicators, and it was reversed after the inflection point. In the individuals with excessive VFA and normal BMI, the risk for glycometabolism disorder exceed compared with normal VFA and normal BMI. Every per-standard deviation increasing in VFA, BFP, WC and BMI, the corresponding risk increasing of glycometabolism disorder was 16.4, 14.6, 22.6 and 22.2%. CONCLUSION The study demonstrated that in adults with T2DM or prediabetes, the VFA, BFP, WC and BMI were higher than with normal glycometabolism. In pre-diabetes and normal population, there were positive correlations of HbA1c and FBG with obesity-related indicators. In T2DM with poor glycemic control (HbA1c > 7%), there might be a trend of fat loss. VFA could negatively affect glycometabolism independently from BMI. The optimum to evaluate the risk of glycometabolism disorder was WC.

Abstract
Background Eating speed has been reported to be associated with energy intake, body weight, waist circumference (WC), and total body fat. However, no study has explored the association between eating speed and body fat distribution, especially its difference among different age or body mass index (BMI) groups. Methods 4770 participants aged 18–80 years were recruited from the baseline survey of the Lanxi Cohort Study. They were categorized into three groups according to meal duration. Linear regression analyses were performed among all participants and separately by age group and obesity status to evaluate the associations of WC and total and regional fat mass percentages (FM%) with eating speed. Results After adjusting for confounding factors, eating slowly was significantly related to lower WC, lower total, trunk, and android FM%, lower android-to-gynoid fat mass ratio, and higher leg and gynoid FM%. After stratification by age or obesity status, the associations were especially prominent among participants aged 18–44 years or those with BMI < 24 kg/m2. No significant trends were found for participants aged 65–80 years or those who were overweight/obese. Conclusions Eating slowly is closely related with better fat distribution among Chinese adults, especially for those aged 18–44 years and those with BMI < 24 kg/m2. If confirmed prospectively, it might be a potential efficient approach to improve fat distribution. Abstract
Aim To examine the association of body mass index (BMI) [kg/m2] and its classifications (underweight [BMI < 18.5], normal [18.5 ≤ BMI < 25], overweight [25 ≤ BMI < 30], and obese [BMI ≥ 30]) with brain structure in individuals with a wide range of BMI group. Materials and methods The participants included 382 right-handed individuals (mean age: 46.9 ± 14.3 years, 142 men and 240 women). The intelligence quotient was assessed using the Japanese Adult Reading Test. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were performed to analyze the association of BMI and its classifications with gray and white matter structures, respectively. Results According to VBM, BMI was significantly and negatively correlated with the bilateral cerebellum exterior volumes. In group comparisons, the right cerebellum exterior volume was significantly lower in the overweight or obese group than in the underweight or normal group, while the bilateral cuneus and calcarine cortex, left cuneus, and left precuneus volume was significantly lower in the underweight group than in the non-underweight group. Sex-related stratification analyses for VBM revealed that BMI was significantly and negatively correlated with the bilateral cerebellum exterior volumes only in women. In group comparisons, the left cerebellum exterior volume was significantly lower in obese women than in non-obese women. The left thalamus proper and the right cerebellum exterior volumes were significantly lower in overweight or obese group than in underweight or normal group in men and women, respectively. The bilateral cuneus and calcarine cortex, left cuneus and carcarine cortex, and bilateral cuneus volume was significantly lower in underweight men than in non-underweight men. In contrast, there were no notable findings on DTI. Conclusion Our results suggest association of continuous BMI, being overweight or obese, and being underweight with decreased gray matter volume in individuals with a wide range of BMI group. Furthermore, sex-related differences are seen in the association of BMI and its classifications with regional gray matter volume reductions. Abnormally high or low BMIs may have a negative influence on regional gray matter volumes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Muscle mass is one of the critical components that ensure muscle function. Loss of muscle mass at every stage of life can cause many adverse effects. Sarcopenia, which can occur in different age groups and is characterized by a decrease in muscle mass, is a critical syndrome that affects the quality of life of individuals. Aging, a universal process, can also cause loss of muscle mass. It is essential to monitor and measure muscle mass, which should be sufficient to maintain optimal health. Having various disadvantages with the ordinary methods used to estimate muscle mass increases the need for the new high technology methods. This study aims to develop a low-cost and trustworthy Body Muscle Percentage calculation model based on artificial intelligence algorithms and biomedical signals. METHODS For the study, 327 photoplethysmography signals of the subject were used. First, the photoplethysmography signals were filtered, and sub-frequency bands were obtained. A quantity of 125 time-domain features, 25 from each signal, have been extracted. Additionally, it has reached 130 features in demographic features added to the model. To enhance the performance, the spearman feature selection algorithm was used. Decision trees, Support Vector Machines, Ensemble Decision Trees, and Hybrid machine learning algorithms (the combination of three methods) were used as machine learning algorithms. RESULTS The recommended Body Muscle Percentage estimation model have the perfomance values for all individuals R=0.95, for males R=0.90 and for females R=0.90 in this study. CONCLUSION Regarding the study results, it is thought that photoplethysmography-based models can be used to predict body muscle percentage.

Abstract
The analysis of body composition is a fundamental part of a nutritional status
assessment, and the use of diagnostic imaging methods has been increasingly
required for an adequate characterization of the lean body mass and fat mass.
Body composition measurements are useful in evaluating the effectiveness of
nutritional interventions and monitoring changes associated with aging and
chronic diseases. Whole-body densitometry using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry
(DEXA) is one of the most widely used methods in clinical practice, allowing
highly accurate assessment of the bone mineral content, lean body mass, and fat
mass. Although a DEXA examination provides a lot of information, there is still
no universal standardization of the parameters to be included in radiology
reports. The aim of this study was to review the most relevant information for
assessing body composition by whole-body densitometry.

Abstract
Resumo A análise da composição corporal é parte fundamental de uma avaliação nutricional, em que a utilização de métodos diagnósticos por imagem tem sido cada vez mais requisitada para uma adequada caracterização da massa magra e massa gorda corporal. Medidas de composição corporal são úteis em avaliar a eficácia das intervenções nutricionais e monitorar as mudanças associadas ao envelhecimento e condições de doenças crônicas. A densitometria de corpo inteiro utilizando a técnica de absorciometria de dupla energia (DEXA) é um dos métodos mais utilizados na prática clínica, que permite avaliação com elevada acurácia do conteúdo mineral ósseo, da gordura corporal e da massa magra. Este exame fornece grande quantidade de informações, no entanto, ainda não existe uma padronização universal de quais parâmetros devem ser incluídos nos relatórios radiológicos. O objetivo deste trabalho é revisar as informações mais relevantes para avaliação da composição corporal fornecidas pela densitometria de corpo inteiro.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This study aims to summarize knowledge of alterations in adipose tissue distribution among people with HIV (PWH), with a focus on the cardiac depot and how this relates to the known higher risk of cardiovascular disease in this unique population. RECENT FINDINGS Similar to the general population, cardiac fat depots mirror visceral adipose tissue in PWH. However, altered fat distribution, altered fat quality, and higher prevalence of enlarged epicardial adipose tissue depots are associated with increased coronary artery disease among PWH. Adipose tissue disturbances present in PWH ultimately contribute to increased risk of cardiovascular disease beyond traditional risk factors. Future research should aim to understand how regulating adipose tissue quantity and quality can modify cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Background: Traditionally, hypermetabolism is described in sickle cell disease (SCD). Despite this, few studies have compared rest energy expenditure (REE) with estimated by predictive equations (EEE) in the assessment of adults with SCD. Aims: To compare REE values determined by indirect calorimetry (IC) with that EEE in adults with SCD. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was performed with 46 individuals over 34 years old in the treatment from two reference centers for SCD located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and IC were used to assess BC and REE, respectively. Blood levels were measured to assess hemolytic and protein markers. Pearson’s correlation test was used in the univariate correlation. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and the Bland-Altman analysis were used in the comparison between EEE and IC. P-values ≤ 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: Most participants were from the female sex, Hb SS genotype (80.4%) and with black color (52.2%). The mean age was 50 years old. Weight (r= 0.469; p=0,001), LM (r = 0.631; p=0.000), BMC (r = 0.508; p=0.000) and CRP(r=0.319; p = 0.002) correlated positively with the REE. There was no linear correlation between makers of hemolysis with REE. The REE was overestimated in the EEE when compared to IC (p<0.001). Conclusions: The prediction equations developed for healthy populations are not accurate enough to determine the energy requirements and more studies are needed to better understand how REE role in middle-aged and elderly adults with SCD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) predicts abdominal fat and cardiometabolic risk. In children with obesity, the most adequate cut-off to predict cardiometabolic risk as well as its ability to predict risk changes over time has not been tested. Our aim was to define an appropriate WHtR cut-off to predict cardiometabolic risk in children with obesity, and to analyze its ability to predict changes in cardiometabolic risk over time. METHODS This is an observational prospective study secondary to the OBEMAT2.0 trial. We included data from 218 participants (8-15 years) who attended baseline and final visits (12 months later). The main outcome measure was a cardiometabolic risk score derived from blood pressure, lipoproteins, and HOMA index of insulin resistance. RESULTS The optimal cut-off to predict the cardiometabolic risk score was WHtR ≥0.55 with an area under the curve of 0.675 (95% CI: 0.589-0.760) at baseline and 0.682 (95% CI: 0.585-0.779) at the final visit. Multivariate models for repeated measures showed that changes in cardiometabolic risk were significantly associated with changes in WHtR. CONCLUSION This study confirms the clinical utility of WHtR to predict changes in cardiometabolic risk over time in children with obesity. The most accurate cut-off to predict cardiometabolic risk in children with obesity was WHtR ≥0.55. IMPACT In children, there is no consensus on a unique WHtR cut-off to predict cardiometabolic risk. The present work provides sufficient evidence to support the use of the 0.55 boundary. We have a large sample of children with obesity, with whom we compared the previously proposed boundaries according to cardiometabolic risk, and we found the optimal WHtR cut-off to predict it. We also analyzed if a reduction in the WHtR was associated with an improvement in their cardiometabolic profile.
