Abstract
There is strong evidence linking relationships and emotions to physical health outcomes. What is critically missing is a more comprehensive understanding of how these important psychosocial factors influence disease over the lifespan. In this narrative review, existing lifespan models of social support and emotion regulation are reviewed and integrated into a general conceptual framework in the health domain. This integrated model takes into account bidirectional links between relationships and emotions, as well as health behaviors, biological pathways, and health. Evidence is consistent with the utility of an integrative model attempting to understand its links to health-relevant pathways and outcomes in older adults. Future work that examines multiple pathways using prospective designs will be necessary for this work to reach its full potential, including intervention and policy opportunities.

Abstract
In Unani System of Medicine, humours (Akhlat) play a vital role in maintenance of health; imbalance of their proportion either qualitative or quantitative can cause disease. Akhlat refers to the body fluids under a wider perspective in the Unani Medicine, which also encompasses fluids designated as hormones by the Modern Medicine. Akhlat (humours) are those moist and fluid parts of the body which are produced after transformation and metabolism of the nutrition; they serve the function of growth, repair, produce energy, preservation of individual and the species. It is concerned with growth, multiplication, differentiation, and metabolic activities of different tissues and systems, and thereby maintains a correct physiological balance between them. Present paper is a review on the concept of Akhlat and an attempt to understand hormones.

Abstract
Aging is a risk factor for the development of multiple chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia. Life expectancy has increased in certain countries but this phenomenon is associated with a reduction of years of healthy life. Aging is associated with a number of physical and functional changes, especially sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a clinical condition associated with a decrease in skeletal muscle and muscle strength, however, sarcopenia is a reversible condition. On the basis of the current scientific literature, sarcopenia could more appropriately capture an individual's vulnerability to negative health-related outcomes since it represents an early form of the chronic diseases. Recognition of this clinical condition can improve the management of older individuals in many different clinical settings. Despite the limitations of the indirect methods used to study body composition, the Italian College of the Academic Nutritionists ME/49 recommends that health authorities and health professionals around the world should make a greater effort to diagnose sarcopenia earlier and to manage it more effectively. In line with the development of cancer screening, the use of two diagnostic tools for sarcopenia (BIA and DXA) should be implemented.

Abstract
Chagas disease, triggered by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) plays a potentially threat to historically non-endemic areas. Considerable evidence established that the immuno-endocrine balance could deeply influence the experimental T. cruzi progression inside the host's body. A high-resolution multiple reaction monitoring approach (MRMHR) was used to study the influence of melatonin on adrenal and plasma steroidal hormones profile of T. cruzi infected Wistar rats. Young (5 weeks) and middle-aged (18 months) male Wistar rats received melatonin (5 mg/Kg, orally) during the acute Chagas disease. Corticosterone, 11-dehydrocorticosterone (11-DHC), cortisol, cortisone, aldosterone, progesterone and melatonin concentration were evaluated. Interleukin-1 alpha and β (IL-1α and β), IL-6 and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) were also analyzed. Our results revealed an increased production of corticosterone, cortisone, cortisol and aldosterone in middle-aged control animals, thus confirming the aging effects on the steroidal hormone profile. Serum melatonin levels were reduced with age and predominantly higher in young and middle-aged infected rats. Melatonin treatment reduced the corticosterone, 11-DHC, cortisol, cortisone, aldosterone and progesterone in response to T. cruzi infection. Decreased IL-1 α and β concentrations were also found in melatonin treated middle-aged infected animals. Melatonin treated middle-aged control rats displayed reduced concentrations of TGF-β. Melatonin levels were significantly higher in all middle-aged rats treated animals. Reduced percentages of early and late thymocyte apoptosis was found for young and middle-aged melatonin supplemented rats. Finally, our results show a link between the therapeutic and biological effects of melatonin controlling steroidal hormones pathways as well as inflammatory mediators. Melatonin acts on the regulation of steroid hormones, apoptosis and cytokine signaling during acute T. cruzi infection; Middle-aged control rats have higher production of corticosterone, cortisone, cortisol and aldosterone; Melatonin treated middle-aged infected rats displayed reduced concentrations of IL-1 α and β; Melatonin levels were significantly higher in all middle-aged rats treated animals; Reduced percentages of early and late thymocyte apoptosis was found for young and middle-aged melatonin supplemented rats.

Abstract
With aging, incidence of severe stress-related diseases increases. However, mechanisms, underlying individual vulnerability to stress and age-related diseases are not clear. The goal of this review is to analyze finding from the recent literature on age-related characteristics of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis associated with stress reactivity in animals that show behavioral signs of anxiety and depression under mild stress, and in human patients with anxiety disorders and depression with emphasis on the impact of the circadian rhythm and the negative feedback mechanisms involved in the stress response. One can conclude that HPA axis reaction to psycho-emotional stress, at least acute stress, increases in the aged individuals with anxiety and depression behavior. Elevated stress reactivity is associated with disruption of the circadian rhythm and the mineralocorticoid receptor-mediated glucocorticoid negative feedback. The disordered function of the HPA axis in individuals with anxiety and depression behavior can contribute to aging-related pathology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Ecuadorian earthquake in April 16th was the second strongest and deadliest in 2016 worldwide, with approximately one million people affected. In this paper, we analyzed the psychological impact and the relationship between mental health events and various earthquake-related stressors related to the earthquake, 9 months after the event. METHODS We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study, applying an anonymous survey to 316 adolescents (13-19 years old) from Muisne, Ecuador. Suicidal tendency, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) were evaluated via the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS), Spence Children's Anxiety Scale, Okasha Suicidality Scale, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and the adapted seven-questions earthquake-related stressors survey. RESULTS We found a high prevalence of suicidal ideations and behavior, posttraumatic stress, depression and anxiety compared to international studies. Even though adolescents currently living in shelters had higher levels of anxiety, their suicidal tendency was significantly lower than those living in their own or their relatives' home. Finally, the earthquake-related stressors were not associated with suicidality and mental health events, with the exception of economic damage suffered by the family. CONCLUSIONS High levels of depression, post-traumatic stress and anxiety among high-school students were found, especially among those who have suffered serious economic damage. The economic impact in their families and high unemployment rates among their parents seems to be related to lack of hope and favorable perspectives for their future, situation that might lead to lead to emotional disturbances and psychological disorders. Although prolonged homelessness experience in shelters may be a stressful occurrence, might also be related with spiritual growth among adolescents, and may work as a protective factor against suicidal ideations and attempts.

Abstract
The challenge hypothesis makes specific predictions about the association between testosterone and status-seeking behaviors, but the findings linking testosterone to these behaviors are often inconsistent. The dual-hormone hypothesis was developed to help explain these inconsistencies. Specifically, according to this hypothesis, testosterone's association with status-seeking behavior depends on levels of cortisol. Here, we (1) describe the dual-hormone hypothesis in relation to the challenge hypothesis; (2) review recent studies that tested the dual-hormone hypothesis as well as meta-scientific evidence of heterogeneous dual-hormone findings across studies; (3) discuss potential explanations for this heterogeneity, including methodological considerations, contextual factors, and individual differences; and (4) provide recommendations for new work aimed at testing and extending the dual-hormone hypothesis.

Abstract
Adrenal crises are severe manifestations of adrenal insufficiency that result in hospital admission and incur a risk of cardiovascular events, acute renal injury, and death. Evidence from population-based studies indicate that adults older than 60 years have the highest adrenal insufficiency incidence, contribute to the highest number of adrenal crises, and have the highest age-specific incidence of adrenal crisis, which doubles between the age groups of 60-69 years and 80 years or older. Older patients might be more susceptible to adrenal crises because of a higher prevalence of comorbidities and a consequently higher risk of acute illness. This susceptibility might be compounded by shortfalls in the implementation of prevention strategies for adrenal crisis, because of individual and social factors that increase with age. Although little research has focused on adrenal crisis prevention in older patients, it seems logical that a timely diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency and the use of consensus driven adrenal crisis prevention and attenuation strategies might reduce adrenal crises in patients older than 60 years old.

Abstract
Brain aging proceeds with cellular and molecular changes in the limbic system. Aging-dependent changes might affect emotion and stress coping, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show aged (18-month-old) mice exhibit upregulation of NADPH oxidase and oxidative stress in the hippocampus, which mirrors the changes in young (2-month-old) mice subjected to chronic stress. Aged mice that lack p47phox, a key subunit of NADPH oxidase, do not show increased oxidative stress. Aged mice exhibit depression-like behavior following weak stress that does not produce depressive behavior in young mice. Aged mice have reduced expression of the epigenetic factor SUV39H1 and its upstream regulator p-AMPK, and increased expression of Ppp2ca in the hippocampus-changes that occur in young mice exposed to chronic stress. SUV39H1 mediates stress- and aging-induced sustained upregulation of p47phox and oxidative stress. These results suggest that aging increases susceptibility to stress by upregulating NADPH oxidase in the hippocampus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Overindulgence in Internet gaming, which is related to rapid development of the online game industry, can cause a psychiatric disorder known as Internet gaming disorder (IGD). The number of adolescents with IGD is on the rise in countries with developed Internet technologies, such as South Korea. Therefore, it is important to develop biomarkers to detect patients at high risk of IGD. This study investigated expression levels of proteins in the blood of adolescents to provide insight into the development of biomarkers. METHODS We collected blood samples from 73 subjects [40 healthy adolescents (Internet gaming control, IGC) and 33 adolescents with IGD] between 13:00 and 15:00. We analyzed the expression levels of orexin A, oxytocin, cortisol, melatonin, BDNF, sICAM-1, RANTES, and NCAM using multiplex assay kits. RESULTS Orexin A was significantly (p = .016) elevated in the IGD group and the expression levels of melatonin tended to be higher (p = .055) in the IGD group. On the other hand, increased Internet gaming time in the IGD group was negatively correlated (p = .041) with expression of BDNF. On the contrary, sICAM-1 associated with inflammation exhibited the tendency of the positive correlation (p = .073) with Internet gaming time in the IGD group. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS We identified elevation of orexin A in the peripheral blood of adolescents with IGD and a negative correlation between Internet gaming time and BDNF in adolescents with IGD. Our results provide useful information to understand the pathophysiology of IGD in adolescents.

Abstract
Chronologically-aged skin displays multiple functional changes in both the dermis and the epidermis. It appears that epidermal dysfunction, compromised permeability homeostasis, reduced stratum corneum hydration and elevated skin surface pH predispose to the development of aging-associated cutaneous and extracutaneous disorders. Improvements in epidermal function have been shown to be an effective alternative therapy in the prevention and treatment of some aging-associated cutaneous disorders, including eczematous dermatitis, pruritus, and xerosis. Recent studies demonstrated that epidermal dysfunction leads to the development of chronic, low-grade systemic inflammation, termed ‘inflammaging,’ which is linked to the development of aging-associated systemic disorders. Thus, correction of epidermal dysfunction could comprise a novel strategy in the prevention and treatment of aging-associated systemic disorders as well. In this review, we summarize aging-associated alterations in epidermal function, their underlying mechanisms, and their clinical significance. Regimens to improve epidermal function in the elderly are also discussed.

Abstract
The increased production of endogenous glucocorticoids (GCs) in the skin of the elderly population contributes to age-related defects strikingly similar to those occurring after pharmacologic treatments with GCs. GCs act through the ligand-dependent transcription factors GC receptor (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). We reported that epidermal MR plays nonredundant roles relative to GR in adult mouse skin homeostasis; however, its relative contribution to natural skin aging has not been previously investigated. A 13-month-old MR epidermal knockout (MREKO) mice showed differential features of aging relative to controls (CO) in all skin compartments. MREKO mice were resistant to age-induced epidermal atrophy but showed reduced dermal thickness, with decreased collagen deposition and decreased SMAD2 and 3 activity. Importantly, the dermal white adipose tissue (dWAT) was 2.5-fold enlarged in 13-month MREKO versus CO, featuring adipocyte hyperplasia and hypertrophy at least in part through early increases in Pparg. These changes correlated with compartment-specific alterations in GC signaling. In addition, conditioned medium from MREKO keratinocytes increased adipocyte differentiation, indicating paracrine regulation of adipogenesis through mechanisms that include activation of β-catenin signaling. These findings highlight the importance of epidermal MR in regulating cross-talk among skin compartments in naturally aged skin through GC and β-catenin signaling pathways.

Abstract
Dementia is characterized by a long preclinical phase that may last years to decades before the onset of mild cognitive impairment. Slow gait speed and subjective memory complaint commonly co-occur during this preclinical phase, and each is a strong independent predictor of cognitive decline and dementia. Motoric cognitive risk (MCR) syndrome is a pre-dementia syndrome that combines these two early harbingers of dementia. The risk of cognitive decline or dementia is stronger for MCR than for either slow gait speed or subjective memory complaint alone. Slow gait speed and subjective memory complaint have several common risk factors: cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, abnormal cortisol profiles, low vitamin D levels, brain atrophy with decreased hippocampal volume, and increased deposition of beta-amyloid in the brain. The underlying pathogenesis of MCR remains poorly understood. Metabolomics and proteomics have great potential to provide new insights into biological pathways involved in MCR during the long preclinical phase preceding dementia.

Abstract
Aging of the brain can result in excessive glucocorticoid secretion, potentially due to chronic stress and related situations. This can lead to dysfunction of brain areas involved in control of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis, growth, and metabolism, as well as areas associated with cognition and mood regulation. This chapter presents a protocol for two-dimensional differential in-gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) analysis of hypothalamus and hippocampus tissue obtained from mice following exposure to high levels of corticosterone for 14 days. The chapter also presents a method for identification of the affected proteins in these brain regions using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry.

Abstract
The essential amino acid L-tryptophan (Trp) appears to play an important role in aging by acting as a general regulator of protein homeostasis. The major route of Trp degradation, the kynurenine pathway (KP), produces a range of biologically active metabolites that can impact or be impacted by a variety of body systems, including the endocrine, haemopoietic, immune, intermediary metabolism and neuronal systems, with the end product of the KP, NAD+, being essential for vital cellular processes. An account of the pathway, its regulation and functions is presented in relation to body systems with a summary of previous studies of the impact of aging on the pathway enzymes and metabolites. A low-grade inflammatory environment characterized by elevation of cytokines and other immune modulators and consequent disturbances in KP activity develops with aging. The multifactorial nature of the aging process necessitates assessment of factors determining the progression of this mild dysfunction to age-related diseases and developing strategies aimed at arresting and reversing this progression.

Abstract
Introduction: Osteoporosis is increasingly prevalent in the elderly, with fractures mostly occurring in women and men who are older than 55 and 65 years of age, respectively. The aim of this review was to examine the evidence regarding the influence of hormones on bone metabolism, followed by clinical data of hormonal changes in the elderly, in the attempt to provide possible poorly explored diagnostic and therapeutic candidate targets for the management of primary osteoporosis in the aging population. Material and methods: An extensive Medline search using PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library was performed. Results: While the rise in Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels has a protective role on bone mass, the decline of estrogen, testosterone, Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), and vitamin D and the rise of cortisol, parathyroid hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) favor bone loss in the elderly. Particularly, the AA rs6166 FSH receptor (FSHR) genotype, encoding for a more sensitive FSHR than that encoded by the GG one, is associated with low total body mass density (BMD), independently of circulating estrogen. A polyclonal antibody with a FSHR-binding sequence against the β-subunit of murine FSH seems to be effective in ameliorating bone loss in ovariectomized mice. Conclusions: A complete hormonal assessment should be completed for both women and men during bone loss evaluation. Novel possible diagnostic and therapeutic tools might be developed for the management of male and female osteoporosis.

Abstract
Spa treatment can effectively reestablish mood balance in patients with psychiatric disorders. In light of the adrenal gland’s role as a crossroad of psychosomatic medicine, this study evaluated changes in 88 circulating steroids and their relationships with a consolidation of somatic, psychosomatic and psychiatric components from a modified N-5 neurotic questionnaire in 46 postmenopausal 50+ women with anxiety-depressive complaints. The patients underwent a standardized one-month intervention therapy with physical activity and an optimized daily regimen in a spa in the Czech Republic. All participants were on medication with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. An increase of adrenal steroidogenesis after intervention indicated a reinstatement of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The increases of many of these steroids were likely beneficial to patients, including immunoprotective adrenal androgens and their metabolites, neuroactive steroids that stimulate mental activity but protect from excitotoxicity, steroids that suppress pain perception and fear, steroids that consolidate insulin secretion, and steroids that improve xenobiotic clearance. The positive associations between the initial values of neurotic symptoms and their declines after the intervention, as well as between initial adrenal activity and the decline of neurotic symptoms, indicate that neurotic impairment may be alleviated by such therapy provided that the initial adrenal activity is not seriously disrupted.

Abstract
Aging is a natural process defined by the gradual, time-dependent decline of biological and behavioural functions, for which individuals of the same chronological age show variability. The capacity of biological systems to continuously adjust for optimal functioning despite ever changing environments is essential for healthy aging, and variability in these adaptive homeostatic mechanisms may reflect such heterogeneity in the aging process. With an ever-increasing aging population, interest in biomarkers of aging is growing. Although no universally accepted definition of biomarkers of healthy aging exists, mediators of homeostasis are consistently used as measures of the aging process. As important sex differences are known to underlie many of these systems, it is imperative to consider that this may reflect, to some extent, the sex differences observed in aging and age-related disease states. This chapter aims to outline sex differences in key homeostatic domains thought to be associated with the pathophysiology of aging, often proposed as biomarkers of aging and age-related disease states. This includes considering sex-based differences and hormonal status with regards to the gonadal and adrenal endocrine systems and immune function.
