Strain engineering and epitaxial stabilization of halide perovskites

Bottom-Up Quasi-Epitaxial Growth of Hybrid Perovskite from Solution Process-Achieving High-Efficiency Solar Cells via Template​-Guided Crystallization

Epitaxial growth gives the highest-quality crystalline semiconductor thin films for optoelectronic devices. Here, a universal solution-processed bottom-up quasi-epitaxial growth of highly oriented α-formamidinium lead triiodide (α-FAPbI₃ ) perovskite film via a two-step method is reported, in which the crystal orientation of α-FAPbI₃ film is precisely controlled through the synergetic effect of methylammonium chloride and the large-organic cation butylammonium bromide. In situ GIWAXS visualizes the BA-related intermediate phase formation at the bottom of film, which serves as a guiding template for the bottom-up quasi-epitaxial growth in the subsequent annealing process. The template-guided epitaxially grown BAFAMA perovskite film exhibits increased crystallinity, preferred crystallographic orientation, and reduced defects. Moreover, the BAFAMA perovskite solar cells demonstrate decent stability, maintaining 95% of their initial power conversion efficiency after 2600 h ambient storage, and 4-time operation condition lifetime enhancement.

Tip-Induced Strain Engineering of a Single Metal Halide Perovskite Quantum Dot

Strain engineering of perovskite quantum dots (pQDs) enables widely tunable photonic device applications. However, manipulation at the single-emitter level has never been attempted. Here, we present a tip-induced control approach combined with tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) spectroscopy to engineer strain, bandgap, and the emission quantum yield of a single pQD. Single CsPbBr_xI_3-x pQDs are clearly resolved through hyperspectral TEPL imaging with ∼10 nm spatial resolution. The plasmonic tip then directly applies pressure to a single pQD to facilitate a bandgap shift up to ∼62 meV with Purcell-enhanced PL increase as high as ∼10⁵ for the strain-induced pQD. Furthermore, by systematically modulating the tip-induced compressive strain of a single pQD, we achieve dynamical bandgap engineering in a reversible manner. In addition, we facilitate the quantum dot coupling for a pQD ensemble with ∼0.8 GPa tip pressure at the nanoscale estimated theoretically. Our approach presents a strategy to tune the nano-opto-electro-mechanical properties of pQDs at the single-crystal level.

Lattice Strain Relaxation and Grain Homogenization for Efficient Inverted MAPbI3 Perovskite Solar Cells

The lattice strain of a perovskite film is vital to the controllable growth and charge transport in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, a lead chloride (PbCl₂) assisted crystallization (LCAC) protocol is introduced for releasing the strain across the interface of a NiO_x/perovskite, which induces a preferred (h00) crystal plane growth and grain homogenization. PSCs with LCAC show a facilitated charge extraction and suppressed nonradiative recombination. Thanks to the controlled film growth and strain-released interface, the inverted MAPbI₃ (MA = methylammonium) PSC devices with LCAC deliver a power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 20% with a short-circuit current density (J_sc) of 23.60 mA cm^-2, which is obviously higher than that of the control device with a PCE of 18.36% and a J_sc of 21.74 mA cm^-2. Meanwhile, the LCAC devices maintain 80% of their initial efficiency after being exposed to an ambient atmosphere with a relative humidity of 40% over 1000 h in the dark.

Band-Edge Orbital Engineering of Perovskite Semiconductors for Optoelectronic Applications

Lead (Pb) halide perovskites have achieved great success in recent years because of their excellent optoelectronic properties, which is largely attributed to the lone-pair s orbital-derived antibonding states at the valence band edge. Guided by the key band-edge orbital character, a series of ns²-containing (i.e., Sn²⁺, Sb³⁺, and Bi³⁺) Pb-free perovskite alternatives have been explored as potential photovoltaic candidates. On the other hand, based on the band-edge orbital components (i.e., M²⁺ s and p/X^- p orbitals), a series of strategies have been proposed to optimize their optoelectronic properties by modifying the atomic orbitals and orbital interactions. Therefore, understanding the band-edge electronic features from the recently reported halide perovskites is essential for future material design and device optimization. This Perspective first attempts to establish the band-edge orbital-property relationship using a chemically intuitive approach and then rationalizes their superior properties and explains the trends in electronic properties. We hope that this Perspective will provide atomic-level guidance and insights toward the rational design of perovskite semiconductors with outstanding optoelectronic properties.

Highly Controllable Etchless Perovskite Microlasers Based on Bound States in the Continuum

Lead halide perovskites have been promising materials for lasing applications. Despite that a series of perovskite microlasers have been reported, their lasing modes are confined by either the as-grown morphology or the etched boundary. The first one is quite random and incompatible with integration, whereas the latter one strongly spoils the laser performances. Herein, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a robust and generic mechanism to realize well-controlled perovskite microlasers without the etching process. By patterning a one-dimensional polymer grating onto a perovskite film, we show that the symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs) can be formed in it. The intriguing properties of BICs including a widely spread mode profile and high Q factor, associated with the exceptional gain of perovskite, produce single-mode microlasers with high repeatability, controllability, directionality, and a polarization vortex. This mechanism can also be extended to two-dimensional nanostructures, enabling BIC lasers with different topological charges.

Using In Situ Optical Spectroscopy to Elucidate Film Formation of Metal Halide Perovskites

The research interest in halide perovskites has gained momentum enormously over the last recent years, also due to the demonstration of high-efficient perovskite-based optoelectronic devices. A prerequisite for such highly efficient devices is to realize high-quality perovskite layers, which requires a deep understanding about the perovskite formation and good process control. In that context, in situ optical spectroscopy during the processing of halide perovskites has become increasingly popular. Even though it is a relatively easily accessible yet powerful tool for studying perovskite formation, there exist some technical and analytical aspects that need to be considered to unfold its full potential. In this Perspective, we give an overview of the latest developments in the field of in situ optical spectroscopy to control and better understand the film processing of halide perovskites. We highlight possibilities and pitfalls regarding the analysis of measured optical data, discuss the development of technical concepts, and address future prospects of optical in situ spectroscopy.

Vertically Aligned CsPbBr3 Nanowire Arrays with Template-Induced Crystal Phase Transition and Stability

Metal halide perovskites show great promise for a wide range of optoelectronic applications but are plagued by instability when exposed to air and light. This work presents low-temperature solution growth of vertically aligned CsPbBr₃ nanowire arrays in AAO (anodized aluminum oxide) templates with excellent stability, with samples exposed to air for 4 months still exhibiting comparable photoluminescence and UV stability to fresh samples. The single-crystal nanowire length is adjusted from ∼100 nm to 5 μm by adjusting the precursor solution amount and concentration, and we observe length-to-diameter ratios as high as 100. Structural characterization results indicate that large-diameter CsPbBr₃ nanowires have an orthorhombic structure, while the 10 nm- and 20 nm-diameter nanowires adopt a cubic structure. Photoluminescence shows a gradual blue-shift in emission with decreasing nanowire diameter and marginal changes under varying illumination power intensity. The CsPbBr₃-nanowires/AAO composite exhibits excellent resistance to X-ray radiation and long-term air storage, which makes it promising for future optoelectronic applications such as X-ray scintillators. These results show how physical confinement in AAO can be used to realize CsPbBr₃ nanowire arrays and control their morphology and crystal structure.

Photodiodes based on a MAPbBr3/Bi3+-doped MAPbCl3 single crystals heterojunction for the X-ray detection

The epitaxially fabricated MAPbBr₃/Bi³⁺-doped MAPbCl₃ PSCs pN heterojunction shows advanced X-ray detection performance with decreased dark current density and faster response time under relatively high external reverse voltage.

Kinetically Controlled Growth of Sub-Millimeter 2D Cs2 SnI6 Nanosheets at the Liquid-Liquid Interface

Cs₂ SnI₆ perovskite displays excellent air stability and a high absorption coefficient, promising for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications. However, Cs₂ SnI₆ -based device performance is still low as a result of lacking optimized synthesis approaches to obtain high quality Cs₂ SnI₆ crystals. Here, a new simple method to synthesize single crystalline Cs₂ SnI₆ perovskite at a liquid-liquid interface is reported. By controlling solvent conditions and Cs₂ SnI₆ supersaturation at the liquid-liquid interface, Cs₂ SnI₆ crystals can be obtained from 3D to 2D growth with controlled geometries such as octahedron, pyramid, hexagon, and triangular nanosheets. The formation mechanisms and kinetics of complex shapes/geometries of high quality Cs₂ SnI₆ crystals are investigated. Freestanding single crystalline 2D nanosheets can be fabricated as thin as 25 nm, and the lateral size can be controlled up to sub-millimeter regime. Electronic property of the high quality Cs₂ SnI₆ 2D nanosheets is also characterized, featuring a n-type conduction with a high carrier mobility of 35 cm² V^-1 s^-1 . The interfacial reaction-controlled synthesis of high-quality crystals and mechanistic understanding of the crystal growth allow to realize rational design of materials, and the manipulation of crystal growth can be beneficial to achieve desired properties for potential functional applications.

High length-to-width aspect ratio lead bromide microwires via perovskite-induced local concentration gradient for X-ray detection

Well-oriented PbBr₂ microwires with a length-to-width ratio of up to 5000 were grown using a concentration gradient in co-crystallization with perovskite. Planar-integrated microwires showed a response to X-ray photons.

Strain-activated light-induced halide segregation in mixed-halide perovskite solids

Light-induced halide segregation limits the bandgap tunability of mixed-halide perovskites for tandem photovoltaics. Here we report that light-induced halide segregation is strain-activated in MAPb(I_1−xBr_x)₃ with Br concentration below approximately 50%, while it is intrinsic for Br concentration over approximately 50%. Free-standing single crystals of CH₃NH₃Pb(I_0.65Br_0.35)₃ (35%Br) do not show halide segregation until uniaxial pressure is applied. Besides, 35%Br single crystals grown on lattice-mismatched substrates (e.g. single-crystal CaF₂) show inhomogeneous segregation due to heterogenous strain distribution. Through scanning probe microscopy, the above findings are successfully translated to polycrystalline thin films. For 35%Br thin films, halide segregation selectively occurs at grain boundaries due to localized strain at the boundaries; yet for 65%Br films, halide segregation occurs in the whole layer. We close by demonstrating that only the strain-activated halide segregation (35%Br/45%Br thin films) could be suppressed if the strain is properly released via additives (e.g. KI) or ideal substrates (e.g. SiO₂).

Mixed-halide perovskites are of interest for photovoltaic devices, but light-induced halide segregation obstructs bandgap tuning and is not fully understood. Here the authors study the effects of strain and iodide/bromide ratio on light-induced halide segregation in mixed-halide perovskites.

Solid-phase hetero epitaxial growth of α-phase formamidinium perovskite

Conventional epitaxy of semiconductor films requires a compatible single crystalline substrate and precisely controlled growth conditions, which limit the price competitiveness and versatility of the process. We demonstrate substrate-tolerant nano-heteroepitaxy (NHE) of high-quality formamidinium-lead-tri-iodide (FAPbI₃) perovskite films. The layered perovskite templates the solid-state phase conversion of FAPbI₃ from its hexagonal non-perovskite phase to the cubic perovskite polymorph, where the growth kinetics are controlled by a synergistic effect between strain and entropy. The slow heteroepitaxial crystal growth enlarged the perovskite crystals by 10-fold with a reduced defect density and strong preferred orientation. This NHE is readily applicable to various substrates used for devices. The proof-of-concept solar cell and light-emitting diode devices based on the NHE-FAPbI₃ showed efficiencies and stabilities superior to those of devices fabricated without NHE.

Though literature reports metal halide perovskite epitaxial growth on various substrates, controlling film growth for device applications remains a challenge. Here, the authors report kinetic-controlled growth of halide perovskite thin films on various substrates via layered perovskite templates.

Shedding Light on the Role of Misfit Strain in Controlling Core-Shell Nanocrystals

Heteroepitaxial modification of nanomaterials has become a powerful means to create novel functionalities for various applications. One of the most elementary factors in heteroepitaxial nanostructures is the misfit strain arising from mismatched lattices of the constituent parts. Misfit strain not only dictates epitaxy kinetics for diversifying nanocrystal morphologies but also provides rational control over materials properties. In recent years, advances in chemical synthesis along with the rapid development of electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques have enabled a substantial understanding of strain-related processes, which offers theoretical foundation and experimental guidance for researchers to refine heteroepitaxial nanostructures and their properties. Herein, recent investigations on heterogeneous core-shell nanocrystals containing misfit strains are summarized, with a focus on the mechanistic understanding of strain and strain-induced effects such as tuning the epitaxial habit, modulating the optical emission, and enhancing the catalytic activity and magnetic coercivity.

Reversible multicolor chromism in layered formamidinium metal halide perovskites

Metal halide perovskites feature crystalline-like electronic band structures and liquid-like physical properties. The crystal–liquid duality enables optoelectronic devices with unprecedented performance and a unique opportunity to chemically manipulate the structure with low energy input. In this work, we leverage the low formation energy of metal halide perovskites to demonstrate multicolor reversible chromism. We synthesized layered Ruddlesden-Popper FA_n+1Pb_nX_3n+1 (FA = formamidinium, X = I, Br; n = number of layers = 1, 2, 3 … ∞) and reversibly tune the dimensionality (n) by modulating the strength and number of H-bonds in the system. H-bonding was controlled by exposure to solvent vapor (solvatochromism) or temperature change (thermochromism), which shuttles FAX salt pairs between the FA_n+1Pb_nX_3n+1 domains and adjacent FAX “reservoir” domains. Unlike traditional chromic materials that only offer a single-color transition, FA_n+1Pb_nX_3n+1 films reversibly switch between multiple colors including yellow, orange, red, brown, and white/colorless. Each colored phase exhibits distinct optoelectronic properties characteristic of 2D superlattice materials with tunable quantum well thickness.

Metal halide perovskites feature crystalline-like electronic band structures and liquid-like physical properties that allow chemical manipulation of the structure with low energy input. Here, the authors leverage the low formation energy of 2D metal halide perovskites to demonstrate films that reversibly switch between multiple colors using tunable quantum well thickness.

Low dark current and high-performance hybrid perovskite photodetectors with a PBDB-T:IHIC ultrathin passivation layer

In this Letter, the reduction of undesired high dark current caused by defect states in solution-processed perovskite for photodetectors is realized with the introduction of an ultrathin buffer layer of PBDB-T:IHIC bulk heterojunction (BHJ). By controlling the concentration of BHJ precisely during a solution process, a low dark current density (J_d) of 1.01×10^-4mA/cm² and a high specific detectivity (D^∗) of 2.61×10¹²Jones were achieved. It was found that low J_d is attributed to the passivation effect of BHJ on defect states, where BHJ acts as a Lewis base and interacts with unbonded Pb²⁺ in perovskite. This Letter demonstrates that the application of ultrathin organic BHJ has significant potential for the manufacturing of high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Impact of strain relaxation on performance of α-formamidinium lead iodide perovskite solar cells

High-efficiency lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been fabricated with α-phase formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) stabilized with multiple cations. The alloyed cations greatly affect the bandgap, carrier dynamics, and stability, as well as lattice strain that creates unwanted carrier trap sites. We substituted cesium (Cs) and methylenediammonium (MDA) cations in FA sites of FAPbI3 and found that 0.03 mol fraction of both MDA and Cs cations lowered lattice strain, which increased carrier lifetime and reduced Urbach energy and defect concentration. The best-performing PSC exhibited power conversion efficiency >25% under 100 milliwatt per square centimeter AM 1.5G illumination (24.4% certified efficiency). Unencapsulated devices maintained >80% of their initial efficiency after 1300 hours in the dark at 85°C.

Vapor-assisted deposition of highly efficient, stable black-phase FAPbI3 perovskite solar cells

Mixtures of cations or halides with FAPbI3 (where FA is formamidinium) lead to high efficiency in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) but also to blue-shifted absorption and long-term stability issues caused by loss of volatile methylammonium (MA) and phase segregation. We report a deposition method using MA thiocyanate (MASCN) or FASCN vapor treatment to convert yellow δ-FAPbI3 perovskite films to the desired pure α-phase. NMR quantifies MA incorporation into the framework. Molecular dynamics simulations show that SCN– anions promote the formation and stabilization of α-FAPbI3 below the thermodynamic phase-transition temperature. We used these low-defect-density α-FAPbI3 films to make PSCs with >23% power-conversion efficiency and long-term operational and thermal stability, as well as a low (330 millivolts) open-circuit voltage loss and a low (0.75 volt) turn-on voltage of electroluminescence.

Nano Ball-Milling Using Titania Nanoparticles to Anchor Cesium Lead Bromine Nanocrystals and Energy Transfer Characteristics in TiO2 @CsPbBr3 Architecture

Recently, all-inorganic halide perovskite (CsPbX₃ , (X = Cl, Br, and I)) nanocrystals (NCs) based hybrid architectures have attracted extensive attention owing to their distinct luminescence characteristics. However, due to stress and lattice mismatch, it is still a challenge to construct heterojunctions between perovskite NCs and the nanostructures with different lattice parameters and non-cubic contour. In this work, a room temperature mechanochemical method is presented to construct TiO₂ @CsPbBr₃ hybrid architectures, in which TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) with a hard lattice as nano "balls" mill off the angles and anchor to the CsPbBr₃ NCs with a soft lattice. On the contrary, to ball-mill without TiO₂ or with conventional ceramics balls replacing TiO₂ , CsPbBr₃ NCs still maintain cubic contour deriving from their cubic crystal structures. Moreover, the TiO₂ @CsPbBr₃ architectures display distinct improvement of photoluminescence quantum yields and more excellent thermal stability in contrast with pristine CsPbBr₃ owing to the passivation of surface defect, small surface area, and energy transfer from CsPbBr₃ to TiO₂ . Meanwhile, there is distinct luminous decay characteristic under the radiation of UV and visible light due to the "on" and "off" TiO₂ response. The method provides an alternative strategy to acquire other anchoring heterojunctions based on perovskite NCs for further regulating their luminescent characteristics.

Perovskite Films with Reduced Interfacial Strains via a Molecular-Level Flexible Interlayer for Photovoltaic Application

Interface strains and lattice distortion are inevitable issues during perovskite crystallization. Silane as a coupling agent is a popular connector to enhance the compatibility between inorganic and organic materials in semiconductor devices. Herein, a protonated amine silane coupling agent (PASCA-Br) interlayer between TiO₂ and perovskite layers is adopted to directionally grasp both of them by forming the structural component of a lattice unit. The pillowy alkyl ammonium bromide terminals at the upper side of the interlayer provide well-matched growth sites for the perovskite, leading to mitigated interface strain and ensuing lattice distortion; meanwhile, its superior chemical compatibility presents an ideal effect on healing the under-coordinated Pb atoms and halogen vacancies of bare perovskite crystals. The PASCA-Br interlayer also serves as a mechanical buffer layer, inducing less cracked perovskite film when bending. The developed molecular-level flexible interlayer provides a promising interfacial engineering for perovskite solar cells and their flexible application.

Review of First-Principles Studies of TiO2: Nanocluster, Bulk, and Material Interface

TiO2 has extensive applications in the fields of renewable energy and environmental protections such as being used as photocatalysts or electron transport layers in solar cells. To achieve highly efficient photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications, ongoing efforts are being devoted to developing novel TiO2-based material structures or compositions, in which a first-principles computational approach is playing an increasing role. In this review article, we discuss recent computational and theoretical studies of structural, energetic, electronic, and optical properties of TiO2-based nanocluster, bulk, and material interface for photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications. We conclude the review with a discussion of future research directions in the field.

Magneto-elastic properties of a spin crossover membrane deposited on a deformable substrate

Spin-crossover (SCO) solids have been studied for several years due to their fascinating physical properties and their potential applications as optical switches and reversible high-density memories for information storage. Through this article, we will examine in details the effects of substrate's lattice parameters, on a deformable spin crossover membrane, simulated using an electro-elastic model taking into account the volume change at the transition. The molecules of the membrane can be either in the low spin state (LS) or the high spin state (HS), while those of the substrate are electronically neutral. Magnetic properties of the SCO membrane and the pressure distribution as a function of the lattice parameter of the substrate have been investigated. We demonstrated that the thermally induced first-order spin transition is significantly affected by the structural properties of the substrate, where a rise in the lattice parameter of the latter lowers the transition temperature and reduces the width of the thermal hysteresis loop. The investigations on the spatiotemporal aspects of the spin transition in the membrane demonstrates that the nucleation and growth processes are sensitive to the structural properties of the elastic misfit between the substrate and the SCO membrane.

Rapid Decoherence Induced by Light Expansion Suppresses Charge Recombination in Mixed Cation Perovskites: Time-Domain ab Initio Analysis

Using time-domain density functional theory combined with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, we have investigated the effect of light-induced lattice expansion on the nonradiative electron-hole recombination in the mixed-cation perovskite FA_0.75MA_0.25PbI₃. We demonstrate that charge carrier lifetime extends by a factor of 1.5 within 1% lattice expansion; the bandgap grows only by 0.04 eV; the electron-phonon coupling increases by 13%; and the decoherence time shortens by 37%. The small bandgap change has negligible influence on recombination times. Lattice expansion enhances atomic fluctuations that lead to the enhancement of electron-phonon coupling and acceleration of decoherence. By creating several high-frequency phonon modes, the lattice expansion shortens the decoherence time further. As a result, rapid decoherence beats an enhanced electron-phonon coupling, playing the dominant role in suppressing the nonradiative electron-hole recombination. The light-induced lattice expansion or strain effects provide a rational route to improve the perovskite photovoltaic and photoelectronic device performance.

Machine learning lattice constants for cubic perovskite A22+BB′O6 compounds

The GPR model (M2) is developed to elucidate the statistical relationship among ionic radii, electronegativities, oxidation states, and lattice constants for cubic A₂²⁺BB′O₆ perovskites. The model demonstrates a high degree of accuracy and stability.

Strain Tuning via Larger Cation and Anion Codoping for Efficient and Stable Antimony-Based Solar Cells

Strain induced by lattice distortion is one of the key factors that affect the photovoltaic performance via increasing defect densities. The unsatisfied power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of solar cells based on antimony chalcogenides (Sb-Chs) are owing to their photoexcited carriers being self-trapped by the distortion of Sb2S3 lattice. However, strain behavior in Sb-Chs-based solar cells has not been investigated. Here, strain tuning in Sb-Chs is demonstrated by simultaneously replacing Sb and S with larger Bi and I ions, respectively. Bi/I codoped Sb2S3 cells are fabricated using poly[2,6-(4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-enzothiadiazole)] as the hole-transporting layer. Codoping reduced the bandgap and rendered a bigger tension strain (1.76 × 10-4) to a relatively smaller compression strain (-1.29 × 10-4). The 2.5 mol% BiI3 doped Sb2S3 cell presented lower trap state energy level than the Sb2S3 cell; moreover, this doping amount effectively passivated the trap states. This codoping shows a similar trend even in the low bandgap Sb2(SxSe1-x)3 cell, resulting in 7.05% PCE under the standard illumination conditions (100 mW cm-2), which is one of the top efficiencies in solution processing Sb2(SxSe1-x)3 solar cells. Furthermore, the doped cells present higher humidity, thermal and photo stability. This study provides a new strategy for stable Pb-free solar cells.
