Advances in 2D boron nitride nanostructures: nanosheets, nanoribbons, nanomeshes, and hybrids with graphene

Polymer Brushes on Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Direct covalent functionalization of large-area single-layer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) with various polymer brushes under mild conditions is presented. The photopolymerization of vinyl monomers results in the formation of thick and homogeneous (micropatterned, gradient) polymer brushes covalently bound to hBN. The brush layer mechanically and chemically stabilizes the material and allows facile handling as well as long-term use in water splitting hydrogen evolution reactions.

The Potential Application of BAs for a Gas Sensor for Detecting SO2 Gas Molecule: a DFT Study

Different atmospheric gas molecules (e.g., N2, O2, CO2, H2O, CO, NO, NO2, NH3, and SO2) are absorbed on the pristine hexagonal boron arsenide (BAs) through density functional theory calculations. For each gas molecules, various adsorption positions were considered. The most stable adsorption depended on position, adsorption energy, charge transfer, and work function. SO2 gas molecules had the best adsorption energy, the shortest distance for BAs surface in the atmospheric gas molecule, and a certain amount of charge transfer. The calculation of work function was important for exploring the possibilities of adjusting the electronic and optical properties. Our results presented BAs materials can be the potential gas sensor of SO2 with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Thermally Conductive and Electrical Insulation BNNS/CNF Aerogel Nano-Paper

Adding heat conducting particles to a polymer matrix to prepare thermally conductive and electrical insulation materials is an effective approach to address the safety issues arising from the accumulation of heat in the working process of electronic devices. In this work, thermally conductive and electrical insulation nano-paper, consisting of Boron Nitride nano-sheet (BNNS) and cellulose nanofiber (CNF), was prepared using an aerogel 3D skeleton template method. For comparison, BNNS/CNF nano-paper was also produced using a simple blending method. At a BNNS loading of 50 wt%, the thermal conductivity of BNNS/CNF aerogel nano-paper and blended nano-paper at 70 °C are 2.4 W/mK and 1.2 W/mK respectively, revealing an increase of 94.4%. Under similar conditions, the volume resistivity of BNNS/CNF aerogel nano-paper and blended nano-paper are 4.0 × 10¹⁴ and 4.2 × 10¹⁴ Ω·cm respectively. In view of its excellent thermal conductivity and electrical insulation performance, therefore, BNNS/CNF aerogel nano-paper holds great potential for electronic-related applications.

Electrical Properties of Two-Dimensional Materials Used in Gas Sensors

In the search for gas sensing materials, two-dimensional materials offer the possibility of designing sensors capable of tuning the electronic band structure by controlling their thickness, quantity of dopants, alloying between different materials, vertical stacking, and the presence of gases. Through materials engineering it is feasible to study the electrical properties of two-dimensional materials which are directly related to their crystalline structure, first Brillouin zone, and dispersion energy, the latter estimated through the tight-binding model. A review of the electrical properties directly related to the crystalline structure of these materials is made in this article for the two-dimensional materials used in the design of gas sensors. It was found that most 2D sensing materials have a hexagonal crystalline structure, although some materials have monoclinic, orthorhombic and triclinic structures. Through the simulation of the mathematical models of the dispersion energy, two-dimensional and three-dimensional electronic band structures were predicted for graphene, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and silicene, which must be known before designing a gas sensor.

Tunable, Multifunctional Ceramic Composites via Intercalation of Fused Graphene Boron Nitride Nanosheets

Ternary two-dimensional (2D) materials such as fused graphene-boron nitride (GBN) nanosheets exhibit attractive physical and tunable properties far beyond their parent structures. Although these features impart several multifunctional properties in various matrices, a fundamental understanding on the nature of the interfacial interactions of these ternary 2D materials with host matrices and the role of their individual components has been elusive. Herein, we focus on intercalated GBN/ceramic composites as a model system and perform a series of density functional theory calculations to fill this knowledge gap. Propelled by more polarity and negative Gibbs free energy, our results demonstrate that GBN is more water-soluble than graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), making it a preferred choice for slurry preparation and resultant intercalations. Further, a chief attribute of the intercalated GBN/ceramic is the formation of covalent C-O and B-O bonds between the two structures, changing the hybridization of GBN from sp² to sp³. This change, combined with the electron release in the vicinity of the interfacial regions, leads to several nonintuitive mechanical and electrical alterations of the composite such as exhibiting higher young's modulus, strength, and ductility as well as sharp decline in the band gap. As a limiting case, though both tobermorite ceramic and h-BN are wide band gap materials, their intercalated composite becomes a p-type semiconductor, contrary to intuition. These multifunctional features, along with our fundamental electronic descriptions of the origin of property change, provide key guidelines for synthesizing next generation of multifunctional bilayer ceramics with remarkable properties on demand.

Exfoliated Graphene Leads to Exceptional Mechanical Properties of Polymer Composite Films

Polymers with superior mechanical properties are desirable in many applications. In this work, polyethylene (PE) films reinforced with exfoliated thermally reduced graphene oxide (TrGO) fabricated using a roll-to-roll hot-drawing process are shown to have outstanding mechanical properties. The specific ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus of PE/TrGO films increased monotonically with the drawing ratio and TrGO filler fraction, reaching up to 3.2 ± 0.5 and 109.3 ± 12.7 GPa, respectively, with a drawing ratio of 60× and a very low TrGO weight fraction of 1%. These values represent by far the highest reported to date for a polymer/graphene composite. Experimental characterizations indicate that as the polymer films are drawn, TrGO fillers are exfoliated, which is further confirmed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Exfoliation increases the specific area of the TrGO fillers in contact with the PE matrix molecules. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the PE-TrGO interaction is stronger than the PE-PE intermolecular van der Waals interaction, which enhances load transfer from PE to TrGO and leverages the ultrahigh mechanical properties of TrGO.

Mo-doped boron nitride monolayer as a promising single-atom electrocatalyst for CO2 conversion

The design of new, efficient catalysts for the conversion of CO₂ to useful fuels under mild conditions is urgent in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and alleviate the energy crisis. In this work, a series of transition metals (TMs), including Sc to Zn, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd and Ag, supported on a boron nitride (BN) monolayer with boron vacancies, were investigated as electrocatalysts for the CO₂ reduction reaction (CRR) using comprehensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results demonstrate that a single-Mo-atom-doped boron nitride (Mo-doped BN) monolayer possesses excellent performance for converting CO₂ to CH₄ with a relatively low limiting potential of -0.45 V, which is lower than most catalysts for the selective production of CH₄ as found in both theoretical and experimental studies. In addition, the formation of OCHO on the Mo-doped BN monolayer in the early hydrogenation steps is found to be spontaneous, which is distinct from the conventional catalysts. Mo, as a non-noble element, presents excellent catalytic performance with coordination to the BN monolayer, and is thus a promising transition metal for catalyzing CRR. This work not only provides insight into the mechanism of CRR on the single-atom catalyst (Mo-doped BN monolayer) at the atomic level, but also offers guidance in the search for appropriate earth-abundant TMs as electrochemical catalysts for the efficient conversion of CO₂ to useful fuels under ambient conditions.

Ångstrom-Scale, Atomically Thin 2D Materials for Corrosion Mitigation and Passivation

Metal deterioration via corrosion is a ubiquitous and persistent problem. Ångstrom-scale, atomically thin 2D materials are promising candidates for effective, robust, and economical corrosion passivation coatings due to their ultimate thinness and excellent mechanical and electrical properties. This review focuses on elucidating the mechanism of 2D materials in corrosion mitigation and passivation related to their physicochemical properties and variations, such as defects, out-of-plane deformations, interfacial states, temporal and thickness variations, etc. In addition, this review discusses recent progress and developments of 2D material coatings for corrosion mitigation and passivation as well as the significant challenges to overcome in the future.

Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride nanosheet as the planar-alignment agent in a liquid crystal-based electro-optic device

The planar-alignment agent in an electro-optic liquid crystal (LC) device plays an essential role for the LC's electro-optical characteristics. Rubbed polyimide (PI) layers are conventionally used as the planar-alignment agent in traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Here we experimentally demonstrate that the 2D hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheet can serve as the planar-alignment agent in an LC cell. This h-BN has higher chemical stability and more optical transparency than the PI layer. Two h-BN-covered indium tin oxide (ITO) glass slides (without any conventional PI layers) are placed together to fabricate an LC cell. A nematic LC inside this h-BN-based cell exhibits uniform planar-alignment-which is probed by a crossed polarized optical microscope. This planar-alignment at the molecular scale is achieved due to the coherent overlay of the benzene rings of the LC molecules on the hexagonal BN lattice. This h-BN-based LC cell shows the typical electro-optical effect when an electric field is applied via ITO electrodes. The dielectric measurement across this h-BN-based electro-optic cell shows a standard Fréedericksz transition of the LC, confirming that the 2D h-BN, as the planar-alignment agent, supplies adequate anchoring energy-which can be overcome by the Fréedericksz threshold voltage. Finally, we show that the h-BN-based LC cell exhibits more optical transparency than a regular PI alignment layer-based LC cell.

The combustion synthesis of highly crystalline boron nitride nanosheets and their application in thermoconductive polymeric composites

We report scalable fabrication of single crystalline BNNS by a magnesiothermic reduction combustion synthesis method and their applications in thermoconductive polymeric composites.

Inverted vortex fluidic exfoliation and scrolling of hexagonal-boron nitride

Exfoliation or scrolling of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) occurs in a vortex fluidic device (VFD) operating under continuous flow, with a tilt angle of −45° relative to the horizontal position. This new VFD processing strategy is effective in avoiding the build-up of material that occurs when the device is operated using the conventional tilt angle of +45°, where the h-BN precursor and scrolls are centrifugally held against the wall of the tube. At a tilt angle of −45° the downward flow aided by gravity facilitates material exiting the tube with the exfoliation of h-BN and formation of h-BN scrolls then optimized by systematically varying the other VFD operating parameters, including flow rate and rotational speed, along with concentration of h-BN and the choice of solvent. Water was the most effective solvent, which enhances the green chemistry metrics of the processing.

Facile scalable fabrication of ultra-thin freestanding SiO2-based hybrid nanosheets with multifunctional properties

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with unique features like a large surface-to-volume ratio and the quantum confinement effect have attracted great attention for applications in energy storage, catalysis, sensing, membranes, etc. Silica (SiO₂)-based nanosheets, as members of the 2D material family, are extremely intriguing because of their unique electronic insulation, bio-compatibility and profound chemical and thermal stability. However, there is still a lack of available approaches for fabricating SiO₂ nanosheets in a simple, large-scale and cost-effective fashion. In the present research, we have proposed a facile and mass fabrication method for ultra-thin freestanding SiO₂-based hybrid nanosheets (SS) with a uniform thickness by crashing hollow microcapsules through ultrasonication treatment. The morphology, composition, and application of the hybrid nanosheets are investigated in detail. The experimental results demonstrate that SS nanosheets with an inorganic-organic hybrid structure display a Janus-type composition with double bonds residing on one side and hydroxyl groups on the other. Additionally, the SS nanosheets could be easily modified by introducing various functional components such as aluminium hydroxide (AH). The as-prepared SS nanosheets and AH modified nanosheets (SS-AH) could considerably enhance the thermal stability of silicone rubber with remarkably increased thermal decomposition temperatures and residues compared with the reference samples. SS and SS-AH sheets are highly superior in usage as polymer thermal stability fillers because of the following aspects: the hybrid nature of SS and SS-AH is advantageous to facilitate the filler-polymer interaction, so these particles could be readily dispersed into silicone without any hydrophobicity modification; these fillers could improve the thermal stability of elastomers at a much lower filler loading (<8%) than the previously reported filler system (e.g. >20 wt%). Furthermore, the nanosheets are also proved to be efficient in usage as emulsifiers for the immiscible oil-water system with a higher efficiency and emulsion stability than the commonly used emulsifiers. Consequently, the hybrid nanosheets fabricated in this work will not only enrich the family of ultra-thin 2D materials but also attract more interest in potential applications in functional nanocomposites and solid emulsifiers.

Serendipity in Catalysis Research: Boron-Based Materials for Alkane Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Light olefins such as ethylene and propylene form the foundation of the modern chemical industry, with yearly production volumes well into the hundreds of millions of metric tons. Currently, these light olefins are mainly produced via energy-intensive steam cracking. Alternatively, oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light alkanes to produce olefins allows for lower operation temperatures and extended catalyst lifetimes, potentially leading to valuable process efficiencies. The potential benefits of this route have led to significant research interest due to the wide availability of natural gas from shale deposits. Advances in this area have still not yielded catalysts that are sufficiently selective to olefins for industrial implementation, and ODH still remains a holy grail of selective alkane oxidation research. The main challenge in selective oxidation lies in preventing the overoxidation of the desired product, such as propylene during propane oxidation, to CO and CO₂. Research into selective heterogeneous catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane has led to the extensive use of vanadium oxide-based catalysts, and studies on the surface mechanism involved have been used to improve the catalytic activity of the material. Despite decades of research, however, selectivity toward propylene has not proven satisfactory at industrially relevant conversions. It is imperative for new catalytic systems that minimize product overoxidation to be developed for future applications of oxidative dehydrogenation processes. While rational catalyst design has been successful in developing homogeneous catalyst systems, its practical use in heterogeneous catalyst development remains modest. The complexity of surfaces with a variety of terminations and bulk structures, let alone their modification by the chemical potential of a reaction mixture, makes heterogeneous catalyst discovery serendipitous in many cases. The catalyst family presented in this Account is no exception. The importance of catalysis research lies in exploring the science behind serendipity. In this Account, we will first present our initial discovery of boron nitride (BN) as an unexpected catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of light alkanes. Beyond its surprising activity, BN also drew interest due to its low selectivity to carbon oxides. This observation made BN distinct from previously studied metal oxide catalysts for selective alkane oxidation. We narrowed down its unique reactivity to the oxygen functionalization of the catalyst surface, particularly the formation of B-O species as probed by various spectroscopic techniques. In investigating the critical role of each of the structural elements during ODH, we discovered that not only BN but an entire class of boron-containing compounds are active and selective for the formation of propylene from propane. All these materials form a complex oxidized surface with a distribution of BO _x surface sites. This discovery opens the doors to a new field of boron-based oxidation chemistry that currently has more questions than answers. We aim to make this Account a starting point for the research community to explore these new materials to understand their surface mechanisms and the surface species that offer a unique selectivity toward olefinic products. Effective use of these materials may lead to novel processes for efficient use of abundant light alkane resources by oxidation chemistry.

Exploring Multifunctional Applications of Hexagonal Boron Arsenide Sheet: A DFT Study

The electronic, transport, optical, thermoelectric, and thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) stable monolayer of boron arsenide (BAs) sheets have been investigated using state-of-art theoretical calculations. The energetic, dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stability of the BAs sheet have also been studied to unravel the feasibility of experimental realization of this material. Interestingly, the band gap of this semiconducting sheet changes from direct into indirect band gap material by the application of biaxial strain of 10% and it becomes metallic at 14% of biaxial strain. Furthermore, positive phonon vibrational modes have been observed for all applied biaxial strains, which ensure the stability of the sheet under strain. The semiconducting property is preserved when cutting 2D sheet into one-dimensional nanoribbons, and the band gap is size dependent. In addition, the calculated optical properties exhibit strong anisotropy. BAs nanomaterial has strong adsorption in the UV-visible region. The calculated Seebeck coefficient and power factor values show that BAs sheet is an ideal candidate for thermal management and thermoelectric applications. Finally, the thermodynamic properties have been calculated on the basis of the phonon frequencies. These rich properties of BAs nanosheets endow the system with promising applications in nanoelectronics and photovoltaics.

Mechanochemical Green Synthesis of Exfoliated Edge-Functionalized Boron Nitride Quantum Dots: Application to Vitamin C Sensing through Hybridization with Gold Electrodes

Two-dimensional boron nitride quantum dots (2D BNQDs) with excellent chemical stability, high photoluminescence efficiency, and low toxicity are a new class of advanced materials for biosensing and bioimaging applications. To overcome the current challenge about the lack of facile, scalable, and reproducible synthesis approach of BNQDs, we introduce a green and facile approach based on mechanochemical exfoliation of bulk h-BN particles in ethanol. Few-layered hydroxylated-functionalized QDs with a thickness of 1-2 nm and a lateral dimension of 2-6 nm have been prepared. The synthesized nanocrystals exhibit a strong fluorescence emission at 407 and 425 nm with a quantum efficiency of ∼6.2%. Spectroscopic analyses determine that interactions between oxygen groups of the solvent with boron sites occur, which along with the mechanical forces, lead to efficient exfoliation of the hexagonal structure and surface functionalization with -OH groups. We also demonstrate that the orbital interaction between BNQDs and the gold surface results in a profound electrochemical catalytic activity toward oxidation of vitamin C. It is shown that the BNQD-modified screen-printed gold electrode exhibits a decreased onset oxidation potential for about 0.37 V/AgCl. In addition to high catalytic activity, electrochemical studies also reveal that this electrode allows selective and sensitive detection of vitamin C with a good response over a wide range from 0.80 μM to 5.0 mM with a detection limit of 0.45 μM (S/N = 3) and a sensitivity of 1.3 μA μM^-1 cm^-2. Finally, the potential application of the hybrid sensor for detecting vitamin C in commercial drinks is demonstrated.

2D-BN nanoparticles as a spectroscopic marker and drug delivery system with protection properties

An application of 2D-BN nanoparticles as a spectroscopic marker, weak luminescent marker and anticancer drug (doxorubicin, DOX) delivery system with protection properties was studied for the LNCaP strains of cancer cells using FTIR and Raman spectroscopy for analysing the cancer cells, cells with BN, the cancer cells with DOX, and the cancer cells with BN nanoparticles loaded by DOX. Study of IR absorption and Raman spectra of the LNCaP strains of cancer cells incubated with 2D-BN nanoparticles for 1 hour showed that the 2D-BN nanoparticles could pass through the cell membrane and localize inside the membrane or close to the membrane in the cytoplasm of the cells. We registered the spectra of the disturbed lipids during the DOX-2D-BN passing through the membrane. After incubation for 2 hours and more, spectral changes in other structural components of the cell (nuclei, cytoplasm, mitochondria) can be registered. Confocal microscopy showed that a gold nanostructured support enhances the fluorescence of the cancer cells with 2D-BN as well as that with DOX, however the double action of 2D-BN and DOX on the cancer cells aggravates the emission property of the studied system. An MTT test showed that the toxicity of DOX on the 2D-BN nanoparticles is less than that on the reference cells, and at the same time the efficiency of the DOX action on the cancer cells does not change.

Graphene/Boron Nitride-Polyurethane Microlaminates for Exceptional Dielectric Properties and High Energy Densities

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has tremendous potential for dielectric energy storage by rationally assembling with graphene. We report the fabrication of microlaminate composites consisting of alternating reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and h-BN nanosheets embedded in a polyurethane (PU) matrix using a novel, two-step bidirectional freeze casting process. Porous, highly-aligned rGO-PU aerogels having ultrahigh dielectric constants with relatively high dielectric losses and low dielectric strengths are fabricated by initial freeze casting. The losses are suppressed, whereas the dielectric strengths are restored by assembling the porous rGO-PU skeleton with electrically insulating BN-PU tunneling barrier layers in the second freeze casting routine. The ligaments bridging the conductive rGO-PU layers are effectively removed by the BN-PU barrier layers, eliminating the current leakage in the transverse direction. The resultant rGO-PU/BN-PU microlaminate composites deliver a remarkable dielectric constant of 1084 with a low dielectric loss of 0.091 at 1 kHz. By virtue of synergy arising from both the rGO-PU layers with a high dielectric constant and the BN-PU barrier layers with a high dielectric strength, the microlaminate composites present a maximum energy density of 22.7 J/cm³, 44 folds of the neat rGO-PU composite acting alone. The promising overall dielectric performance based on a microlaminate structure offers a new insight into the development of next-generation dielectric materials.

Stable emission and fast optical modulation of quantum emitters in boron nitride nanotubes

Atom-like defects in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have recently emerged as a promising platform for quantum information science. Here, we investigate single-photon emissions from atomic defects in boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). We demonstrate the first, to the best of our knowledge, optical modulation of the quantum emission from BNNTs with a near-infrared laser. This one-dimensional system displays a bright single-photon emission, as well as high stability at room temperature, and is an excellent candidate for optomechanics. The fast optical modulation of a single-photon emission shows multiple electronic levels of the system and has potential applications in optical signal processing.

Two-dimensional Au-1,3,5 triethynylbenzene organometallic lattice: Structure, half-metallicity, and gas sensing

On the basis of first-principles calculations, we investigated the structural and electronic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) Au-1,3,5 triethynylbenzene (Au-TEB) framework, which has been recently synthesized by homocoupling reactions in experiments. Featured by the C-Au-C linkage, the 2D Au-TEB network has a kagome lattice by Au atoms and a hexagonal lattice by organic molecules within the same metal-organic framework (MOF), which exhibits intrinsic half-metallicity with one spin channel metallic and the other spin channel fully insulating with a large energy gap of 2.8 eV. Two branches of kagome bands are located near the Fermi level, with each branch including one flat band and two Dirac bands, which originates from the out-of-plane d_xz and d_yz orbitals of Au and may lead to many exotic topological quantum phases. We further studied the adsorption of F atoms, Cl atoms, and small gas molecules including O₂, CO, NO₂, and NH₃ on the Au-TEB network, aiming to exploit its potential applications in gas sensors. Detailed analyses on adsorption geometry, energy, molecular orbital interaction, and electronic structure modification suggest the great potential of Au-TEP as a promising alternative for gas sensing. We expect these results to expand the universe of low-dimensional half-metallic MOF structures and shed new light on their practical applications in nanoelectronics/spintronics.

Boron nitride nanosheet nanofluids for enhanced thermal conductivity

It is difficult for traditional cooling liquids to meet equipment requirements due to the high power and high integration they demand. Nanofluids are nanoparticle dispersions with high thermal conductivities, thus they have been proposed for heat transfer applications. Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) possess high thermal conductivities and excellent insulation properties. Here, we fabricated BNNS nanofluids and investigated their effects on thermal conductivity enhancements. We find that BNNSs can effectively enhance the thermal conductivity of water. The thermal conductivity of the BNNS nanofluids reached 2.39 W mK-1 at 24 vol% loading. The surface temperature changes of the nanofluids and water were observed during the heating process using an infrared camera. The results show that the nanofluids transfer heat much faster than water, indicating that the fabricated BNNS nanofluids have excellent thermal transfer properties.

Dislocation-controlled formation and kinetics of grain boundary loops in two-dimensional crystals

The formation and kinetics of grain boundaries are closely related to the topological constraints imposed on their complex dislocation structure. Loop-shaped grain boundaries are unique structures to establish such a link because their overall topological "charge" is zero due to their null net Burgers vector. Here, we observe that a local rotational deformation of a 2D colloidal crystal with an optical vortex results in a grain boundary loop only if the product of its radius and misorientation exceeds a critical value. Above this value, the deformation is plastic and the grain boundary loop spontaneously shrinks at a rate that solely depends on this product, while otherwise, the deformation is elastically restored. We show that this elastic-to-plastic crossover is a direct consequence of the unique dislocation structure of grain boundary loops. At the critical value, the loop is structurally equivalent to the so-called "flower defect" and the shrinkage rate diverges. Our results thus reveal a general limit on the formation of grain boundary loops in 2D crystals and elucidate the central role of defects in both the onset of plasticity and the kinetics of grain boundaries.

Synthesis and 3D Interconnected Nanostructured h-BN-Based Biocomposites by Low-Temperature Plasma Sintering: Bone Regeneration Applications

Recent advances and demands in biomedical applications drive a large amount of research to synthesize easily scalable low-density, high-strength, and wear-resistant biomaterials. The chemical inertness with low density combined with high strength makes h-BN one of the promising materials for such application. In this work, three-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) interconnected with boron trioxide (B₂O₃) was prepared by easily scalable and energy efficient spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The composite structure shows significant densification (1.6-1.9 g/cm³) and high surface area (0.97-14.5 m²/g) at an extremely low SPS temperature of 250 °C. A high compressive strength of 291 MPa with a reasonably good wear resistance was obtained for the composite structure. The formation of strong covalent bonds between h-BN and B₂O₃ was formulated and established by molecular dynamics simulation. The composite showed significant effect on cell viability/proliferation. It shows a high mineralized nodule formation over the control, which suggests its use as a possible osteogenic agent in bone formation.

Atomically thin p-n junctions based on two-dimensional materials

Recent research in two-dimensional (2D) materials has boosted a renovated interest in the p-n junction, one of the oldest electrical components which can be used in electronics and optoelectronics. 2D materials offer remarkable flexibility to design novel p-n junction device architectures, not possible with conventional bulk semiconductors. In this Review we thoroughly describe the different 2D p-n junction geometries studied so far, focusing on vertical (out-of-plane) and lateral (in-plane) 2D junctions and on mixed-dimensional junctions. We discuss the assembly methods developed to fabricate 2D p-n junctions making a distinction between top-down and bottom-up approaches. We also revise the literature studying the different applications of these atomically thin p-n junctions in electronic and optoelectronic devices. We discuss experiments on 2D p-n junctions used as current rectifiers, photodetectors, solar cells and light emitting devices. The important electronics and optoelectronics parameters of the discussed devices are listed in a table to facilitate their comparison. We conclude the Review with a critical discussion about the future outlook and challenges of this incipient research field.

Large-area few-layer hexagonal boron nitride prepared by quadrupole field aided exfoliation

A quadrupole electric field-mediated exfoliation method is proposed to convert micron-sized hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) powder into few-layer hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNS). Under optimum conditions (400 Hz, 40 V, 32 μg ml^-1, sodium deoxycholate, TAE medium), the h-BN powders (thickness >200 nm, horizontal scale ∼10 μm) are successfully exfoliated into 0.5-4 nm (1-10 layers) thick h-BNNS with the same horizontal scale. Dynamic laser scattering and atomic force microscope data show that the yield is 47.6% (for the portion with the thickness of 0.5-6 nm), and all of the vertical sizes are reduced to smaller than 18 nm (45 layers).

Ultra-broadband nonlinear optical response of two-dimensional h-BN nanosheets and their hybrid gel glasses

Hydrophilic hydroxylated hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), also called 'white graphene', exhibit high water solubility, compatibility, dispersity with physical and/or chemical effects on the gel matrix, and unexpected but outstanding near-infrared adsorption and nonlinear optical limiting properties. These properties mean that hydroxylated BNNSs are suitable for practical applications in solidification and devices. Hydroxylated BNNSs are doped into an organically modified silicate matrix through a facile sol-gel process. The resulting BNNS-organically modified silicate glass hybrids demonstrate various solid structures (glass, coating, and film), good uniformity, thermostability, toughness, and high linear transmittance in the visible and near-infrared regions. Hybrid glasses showed large optical limiting effects and high doping concentrations without the addition of a compatibiliser, and their limiting thresholds and concentration exceed those of the corresponding suspensions by factors of 1.3-2 and 20-130, respectively. The optical limiting performance of BNNSs is almost equal to or may exceed those of graphene oxide and graphene in solutions and doped glasses. The combined mechanisms of nonlinear absorption, refraction, and scattering are deduced. A solid organically modified silicate hybrid transparent system doped with BNNSs is a promising candidate material for optical limiters and nonlinear optical devices. This system could be an efficient solid-state optical limiter in the visible and long-wavelength near-infrared regions (532-2000 nm).

Electron transport in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons/boron nitride hybrid structures: density functional theory combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function

We investigate the electronic transport properties of two types of junction based on single polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and PAHs embedded in boron nitride (h-BN) nanoribbons, using nonequilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) and density functional theory (DFT). In the PAH junctions, a Fano resonance line shape at the Fermi energy in the transport feature can be clearly seen. In hybrid junctions, structural asymmetries enable interactions between the electronic states, leading to observation of interface-based transport. Our findings reveal that the interface of PAH/h-BN strongly affects the transport properties of the structures.

How to make inert boron nitride nanosheets active for the immobilization of polysulfides for lithium-sulfur batteries: a computational study

The search for effective anchoring nanomaterials for the immobilization of soluble lithium polysulfide (Li₂S_n) species to suppress their shuttling effect has been a key scientific issue for the large-scale practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In this work, by means of comprehensive density functional theory (DFT) computations, we systematically investigated the potential of a series of doped and defective boron nitride (BN) nanosheets as chemical immobilizers for the soluble Li₂S_n species. Our results revealed that the introduction of dopants and defects can enhance the binding strength of Li₂S_n species with BN nanosheets due to the strong LiN or SB interaction. In particular, the doped BN nanosheets that can moderately interact with Li₂S_n species are shown to exhibit outstanding anchoring effects for Li-S batteries because they can keep a balance between the binding strength and integrity of Li₂S_n species. Therefore, by carefully controlling the type of dopants, the inert BN nanosheet can be converted to quite a promising electrode material with high efficiency for Li-S batteries.

Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over a High Surface Area Boron Nitride Catalyst: Exceptional Selectivity for Olefins at High Conversion

Developing environment-friendly active and selective catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane for on-purpose propene synthesis is challenging despite tremendous industrial potential for this reaction. Herein, we report on catalytic activity of high surface area hexagonal boron nitride, toward oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. It shows remarkable selectivity for alkenes (∼70%) at very high conversion (of ∼50%) of propane. Propene and ethene selectivities as high as 53 and 18%, respectively, were obtained at a conversion of 52%. The catalytic activity is retained continuously for 5 h. Regeneration in ammonia brings back the catalytic activity to its full potential. Oxidation of surface B-N bonds in oxygen leads to the diminishing catalytic activity after 5 h which, on heating in ammonia, reduced back to their native form, regaining the indigenous activity. Remarkably, the addition of ammonia in the reaction feed showed stable activity for more than 100 h.

Exfoliation and dispersion of boron nitride nanosheets to enhance ordinary Portland cement paste

Exfoliation and dispersion of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) is the key to achieving desired reinforcing effects for ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Few studies exist, however, of the dispersion of BNNSs in a cement-induced alkaline environment and their effect on the mechanical properties of normal OPC paste. In this study, protocols were developed to prepare BNNS-reinforced OPC paste. Ultrasonication was used to exfoliate BNNSs from h-BN in water based suspensions. The addition of surfactants in the suspension was found to hinder the exfoliation of the BNNSs. The surfactants were, however, found to be essential for the dispersion of the BNNSs in pore solution. Among the three surfactants used in this study, polycarboxylate based superplasticizer was most suitable as it maintained over 40% of the BNNSs stable in the pore solution for 4 hours and increased the hydration flow peak over 20%. Atomic force microscopy results indicated that the thickness of the BNNSs was mostly under 10 nm. With the addition of 0.003 wt% BNNSs, the compressive and tensile strengths of the cement were increased by 13% and 8%, respectively. Besides the nucleation effect as indicated by hydration heat, pore structure refinement and chemical bonding were also found as the main reinforcing mechanisms of BNNSs in OPC matrix.

Design of photonic microcavities in hexagonal boron nitride

We propose and design photonic crystal cavities (PCCs) in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) for diverse photonic and quantum applications. Two dimensional (2D) hBN flakes contain quantum emitters which are ultra-bright and photostable at room temperature. To achieve optimal coupling of these emitters to optical resonators, fabrication of cavities from hBN is therefore required to maximize the overlap between cavity optical modes and the emitters. Here, we design 2D and 1D PCCs using anisotropic indices of hBN. The influence of underlying substrates and material absorption are investigated, and spontaneous emission rate enhancements are calculated. Our results are promising for future quantum photonic experiments with hBN.

Continuous flow synthesis of phosphate binding h-BN@magnetite hybrid material

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is rendered magnetically responsive in aqueous media by binding superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles 8.5–18.5 nm in diameter on the surface. The composite material was generated under continuous flow in water in a dynamic thin film in a vortex fluidic device (VFD) with the source of iron generated by laser ablation of a pure iron metal target in the air above the liquid using a Nd:YAG pulsed laser operating at 1064 nm and 360 mJ. Optimum operating parameters of the VFD were a rotational speed of 7.5k rpm for the 20 mm OD (17.5 mm ID) borosilicate glass tube inclined at 45 degrees, with a h-BN concentration at 0.1 mg mL⁻¹, delivered at 1.0 mL min⁻¹ using a magnetically stirred syringe to keep the h-BN uniformly dispersed in water prior to injection into the base of the rapidly rotating tube. The resulting composite material, containing 5.75% weight of iron, exhibited high phosphate ion adsorption capacity, up to 171.2 mg PO₄³⁻ per gram Fe, which was preserved on recycling the material five times.

BN/Ag hybrid nanomaterials with petal-like surfaces as catalysts and antibacterial agents

BN/Ag hybrid nanomaterials (HNMs) and their possible applications as novel active catalysts and antibacterial agents are investigated. BN/Ag nanoparticle (NP) hybrids were fabricated using two methods: (i) chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of BN NPs in the presence of Ag vapours, and (ii) ultraviolet (UV) decomposition of AgNO₃ in a suspension of BN NPs. The hybrid microstructures were studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), high-angular dark field scanning TEM imaging paired with energy dispersion X-ray (EDX) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). They were also characterized in terms of thermal stability, Ag⁺ ion release, catalytic and antibacterial activities. The materials synthesized via UV decomposition of AgNO₃ demonstrated a much better catalytic activity in comparison to those prepared using the CVD method. The best catalytic characteristics (100% methanol conversion at 350 °C) were achieved using the UV BN/Ag HNMs without preliminary annealing at 600 °C in an oxidizing atmosphere. Both types of the BN/Ag HNMs possess a profound antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli K-261 bacteria.

High temperature thermal management with boron nitride nanosheets

The rapid development of high power density devices requires more efficient heat dissipation. Recently, two-dimensional layered materials have attracted significant interest due to their superior thermal conductivity, ease of production and chemical stability. Among them, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is electrically insulating, making it a promising thermal management material for next-generation electronics. In this work, we demonstrated that an h-BN thin film composed of layer-by-layer laminated h-BN nanosheets can effectively enhance the lateral heat dissipation on the substrate. We found that by using the BN-coated glass instead of bare glass as the substrate, the highest operating temperature of a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) based device could increase from 700 °C to 1000 °C, and at the same input power, the operating temperature of the RGO device is effectively decreased. The remarkable performance improvement using the BN coating originates from its anisotropic thermal conductivity: a high in-plane thermal conductivity of 14 W m^-1 K^-1 for spreading and a low cross-plane thermal conductivity of 0.4 W m^-1 K^-1 to avoid a hot spot right underneath the device. Our results provide an effective approach to improve the heat dissipation in integrated circuits and high power devices.

Anisotropic Etching of Hexagonal Boron Nitride and Graphene: Question of Edge Terminations

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been established as the most effective way to grow large area two-dimensional materials. Direct study of the etching process can reveal subtleties of this competing with the growth reaction and thus provide the necessary details of the overall growth mechanism. Here we investigate hydrogen-induced etching of hBN and graphene and compare the results with the classical kinetic Wulff construction model. Formation of the anisotropically etched holes in the center of hBN and graphene single crystals was observed along with the changes in the crystals' circumference. We show that the edges of triangular holes in hBN crystals formed at regular etching conditions are parallel to B-terminated zigzags, opposite to the N-terminated zigzag edges of hBN triangular crystals. The morphology of the etched hBN holes is affected by a disbalance of the B/N ratio upon etching and can be shifted toward the anticipated from the Wulff model N-terminated zigzag by etching in a nitrogen buffer gas instead of a typical argon. For graphene, etched hexagonal holes are terminated by zigzag, while the crystal circumference is gradually changing from a pure zigzag to a slanted angle resulting in dodecagons.

Bottom-up synthesis of ultra-small molybdenum disulfide-polyvinylpyrrolidone nanosheets for imaging-guided tumor regression

The two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheet has been extensively studied as a novel photothermal transducing agent. However, top-down exfoliation to produce MoS2 nanosheets is inefficient, and MoS2 nanosheet surface modification procedures are complex. Here, we report the synchronous synthesis and surface modification of 2D MoS2 nanosheets with a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted one-pot hydrothermal method. Due to the chelating-coordinating effect between the lone-pair electrons of the PVP carbonyl oxygen and the unoccupied 4d orbitals of molybdenum, the PVP chains could graft onto the surface of MoS2 and guide the growth of the nanosheets. The resultant MoS2-PVP nanosheets were ultra-small (21.4 ± 4.4 nm) and exhibited excellent colloidal stability. Moreover, the strong near-infrared absorption of the MoS2-PVP nanosheets enabled sensitive photothermal conversion performance (with a mass extinction coefficient of 23.33 L g-1 cm-1) and in vitro/in vivo photoacoustic imaging. The MoS2-PVP nanosheets had excellent in vitro and in vivo compatibility and were used for highly efficient tumor photothermal therapy in xenograft tumor-bearing mice. The findings in this report will facilitate the rational design of stable colloidal 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides for effective photothermal cancer therapy.

Computational methods for 2D materials: discovery, property characterization, and application design

The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) materials comes at a time when computational methods are mature and can predict novel 2D materials, characterize their properties, and guide the design of 2D materials for applications. This article reviews the recent progress in computational approaches for 2D materials research. We discuss the computational techniques and provide an overview of the ongoing research in the field. We begin with an overview of known 2D materials, common computational methods, and available cyber infrastructures. We then move onto the discovery of novel 2D materials, discussing the stability criteria for 2D materials, computational methods for structure prediction, and interactions of monolayers with electrochemical and gaseous environments. Next, we describe the computational characterization of the 2D materials' electronic, optical, magnetic, and superconducting properties and the response of the properties under applied mechanical strain and electrical fields. From there, we move on to discuss the structure and properties of defects in 2D materials, and describe methods for 2D materials device simulations. We conclude by providing an outlook on the needs and challenges for future developments in the field of computational research for 2D materials.

Three-Dimensional Printed Thermal Regulation Textiles

Space cooling is a predominant part of energy consumption in people's daily life. Although cooling the whole building is an effective way to provide personal comfort in hot weather, it is energy-consuming and high-cost. Personal cooling technology, being able to provide personal thermal comfort by directing local heat to the thermally regulated environment, has been regarded as one of the most promising technologies for cooling energy and cost savings. Here, we demonstrate a personal thermal regulated textile using thermally conductive and highly aligned boron nitride (BN)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite (denoted as a-BN/PVA) fibers to improve the thermal transport properties of textiles for personal cooling. The a-BN/PVA composite fibers are fabricated through a fast and scalable three-dimensional (3D) printing method. Uniform dispersion and high alignment of BN nanosheets (BNNSs) can be achieved during the processing of fiber fabrication, leading to a combination of high mechanical strength (355 MPa) and favorable heat dispersion. Due to the improved thermal transport property imparted by the thermally conductive and highly aligned BNNSs, better cooling effect (55% improvement over the commercial cotton fiber) can be realized in the a-BN/PVA textile. The wearable a-BN/PVA textiles containing the 3D-printed a-BN/PVA fibers offer a promising selection for meeting the personal cooling requirement, which can significantly reduce the energy consumption and cost for cooling the whole building.
