The relative impact of toxic heavy metals (THMs) (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr)(VI), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb)) on the total environment: an overview

Evaluation of biometry and blood concentration of heavy metals in free-living Chelonia mydas with and without fibropapillomatosis in southern Brazil

The present study determined the presence of heavy metals in green sea turtles with and without fibropapillomatosis in Itapirubá and Cassino beaches, southern Brazil. The weight, curved length of the carapace and body index were determined and blood was collected to quantify the concentrations of cadmium, lead and mercury. A total of 51 blood samples were analyzed, being 46 positives for at least one of the metals. There was a greater number of juvenile turtles in Itapirubá, larger in size and weight than those in Cassino. No statistical differences were found between metal concentrations between regions or between turtles with and without fibropapillomatosis. There was no significant correlation between metal concentrations, biometric variables and the presence of fibropapilomatose. Metal concentrations were low in both regions, with the highest concentrations being Cd and the lowest Hg.

Sex-Specific Associations of Urinary Metals with Renal Function: a Cross-sectional Study in China

BACKGROUND

Extensive studies have revealed the link between heavy metals and CKD. Compared to single meta-elements, mixture of metals reflect real-life metals exposure scenarios and are of interest. However, the mechanism of action of metal mixture on renal function is unclear.

METHODS

This study aimed to explore the potential relationship between urinary arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and chromium (Cr) contents with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels in 2775 participants. The levels of metals in urine were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. We used linear regression models and the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) to evaluate the association between metals and eGFR levels.

RESULTS

In linear regression analysis, urinary As (β = 2.723, 95%CI: 0.29, 5.157) and Pb (β = 3.081, 95%CI: 1.725, 4.438) were positively associated with eGFR in the total population. In the BKMR model, a mixture of the five metals had a positive joint effect on eGFR levels, while Pb (PIP = 0.996) contributed the most to eGFR levels. Pb was positively associated with eGFR levels in the total participants and women. As was positively correlated with eGFR levels in women. Pb and eGFR levels were positively correlated when the other metals were set at 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles.

CONCLUSIONS

To the best of our knowledge, all five metals mixed exposure was positively associated with eGFR. Pb showed more important effects than the other four metals in the mixture, especially in women.

Investigation on metal geochemical cycling in an anthropogenically impacted tidal river in Belgium

The geochemical behavior of metals in water and sediment was investigated in the tidal section of the Zenne River in Belgium. Twelve-hour sampling campaigns were performed in October 2013 and March 2021 at the mouth of the Zenne River, under dry and rainy weather conditions respectively. Water samples were collected every hour while the passive samplers of Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) were deployed continuously during a tidal cycle. In addition, bottom sediments were sampled at the tidal station and water samples were taken upstream and downstream of that station to identify the metal sources. The highest concentrations of Fe, Mn, Pb, Cr, Ni and Zn appear at low tide, indicating the Zenner River as a main source. However, for Co, Cd and Cu, other sources including upstream transport may explain their behavior during a tidal cycle. Fe, Pb and Cr are essentially transported in the particulate phase (<10 % dissolved) while the other metals in the dissolved phase (20 to 90 %). Rainfall and wind gust events also play an important role in trace metal distribution, increasing sediment resuspension and metal desorption. A good agreement was found between the time-averaged dissolved and DGT-labile metal concentrations with the exception of Cu and Fe, which form strong organic Cu complexes and Fe colloids respectively. The sediments of the tidal Zenne are contaminated by trace metals, thus acting as a secondary pollution source to the river. The reductive dissolution of Mn and Fe oxyhydroxides and the release of associated trace metals are the main mobilization mechanisms. Knowledge of the upstream and downstream levels in the water column, the benthic fluxes, which are based on turbulent diffusion, and the partitioning between dissolved and particulate phases allow to explain the metal concentration variations during the tidal cycle.

Intestinal response of Rana chensinensis larvae exposed to Cr and Pb, alone and in combination

Although numerous investigations on the adverse impact of Cr and Pb have been performed, studies on intestinal homeostasis in amphibians are limited. Here, single and combined effects of Cr (104 μg/L) and Pb (50 μg/L) on morphological and histological features, bacterial community, digestive enzymes activities, as well as transcriptomic profile of intestines in Rana chensinensis tadpoles were assessed. Significant decrease in the relative intestine length (intestine length/snout-to-vent length, IL/SVL) was observed after exposure to Pb and Cr/Pb mixture. Intestinal histology and digestive enzymes activities were altered in metal treatment groups. In addition, treatment groups showed significantly increased bacterial richness and diversity. Tadpoles in treatment groups were observed to have differential gut bacterial composition from controls, especially for the abundance of phylum Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Verrucomicrobia, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria as well as genus Citrobacter, Anaerotruncus, Akkermansia, and Alpinimonas. Moreover, transcriptomic analysis showed that the transcript expression profiles of GPx and SOD isoforms responded differently to Cr and/or Pb exposure. Besides, transcriptional activation of pro-apoptotic and glycolysis-related genes, such as Bax, Apaf 1, Caspase 3, PK, PGK, TPI, and GPI were detected in all treatment groups but downregulation of Bcl2 in Pb and Cr/Pb mixture groups. Collectively, these results suggested that Cr and Pb exposure at environmental relevant concentration, alone and in combination, could disrupt intestinal homeostasis of R. chensinensis tadpoles.

Chemical characteristics of bottom ash from biomedical waste incinerators in Ghana

Biomedical waste (BMW) incineration is the most used alternative disposal method in developing countries, such as Ghana. The improper disposal of incinerator-generated bottom ash (BA) is a significant concern due to the hazardous nature of waste. A study was conducted at Tema Hospital (TGH) and Asuogyaman Hospital (VRAH) incinerator sites. The BA samples were sent to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Institute of Industrial Research, Ghana. The BA samples were weighed with fisher analytical balance, ground, and sieved with standard grade meshes of 120, 100, and 80 to determine the BA particle size distribution. The chemical composition and heavy metals were analysed using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) techniques. The results indicated the chemical composition of the analysed BA samples was CaCO₃ (49.90%), CaO (27.96%) and MgCO₃ (6.02%) for TGH and CaCO₃ (48.30%), CaO (27.07%), and SiO₂ (6.10%) for VRAH, respectively. The mean concentration (M) (kg m^-3) and standard deviation (SD) for TGH in the BA were 7.082 ± 0.478 (Ti), 4.657 ± 0.127 (Zn) and 4.271 ± 1.263 (Fe), while that of VRAH consisted of 10.469 ± 1.588 (Ti), 7.896 ± 2.154 (Fe) and 4.389 ± 0.371 (Zn). Therefore, the heavy metals' mean concentration at the BA is above the WHO permissible limits of soil, i.e., 0.056 kg m^-3 (Ti), 0.085 kg m^-3 (Pb), 0.100 kg m^-3 (Cr) and 0.036 kg m^-3 (Cu). Furthermore, the heavy metal mean concentrations of TGH and VRAH present in the BA analysed samples were ranked in descending order: Ti > Zn > Fe and Ti > Fe > Zn, respectively. It is therefore recommended that BA must be properly disposed of because of the hazardous nature of heavy metals present in the analysed samples, which are able to cause environmental and public health issues.

Potentially toxic elements in lake sediments in China: Spatial distribution, ecological risks, and influencing factors

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pollution in lake sediments is a serious threat to the ecological safety of lake water and human health, owing to anthropogenic activities. Studies on the distribution of pollution, the differences in lake types, and the influencing factors in China as a whole are lacking. This study collected data on PTEs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in Chinese lake sediments published from 2005 to 2021, and aimed to evaluate pollution levels and spatial distribution characteristics of PTEs in lake sediments, differences in pollution in different types of lakes, and influencing factors. The results showed that (1) All metals in the lake sediments accumulated to different degrees, when compared to the background values. (2) The lake type pollution levels were ranked: urban lakes > reservoirs > plateau lakes > natural lakes. (3) The geoaccumulation and potential ecological risk indexes both indicated that Cd and Hg are the main pollutants, and that the overall ecological risk level of lake sediments in China is high. (4) The degree of economic and population growth is highly correlated with the concentrations of eight PTEs; the amount of fertilizer and pesticide used in agricultural activities are the main factors affecting As and Hg; industrial activities and traffic pollution emissions are the predominant factors affecting Cu and Ni. (5) In the interaction detection analysis, the Cr content was mainly influenced by natural factors; Cd, Pb, and Zn contents were affected more by human activities. This study provides a reference for understanding the current status and influencing factors of PTE pollution in Chinese lakes.

Noise, Air, and Heavy Metal Pollution as Risk Factors for Endothelial Dysfunction

During the last two decades, large epidemiological studies have shown that the physical environment, including noise, air pollution or heavy metals, have a considerable impact on human health. It is known that the most common cardiovascular risk factors are all associated with endothelial dysfunction. Vascular tone, circulation of blood cells, inflammation, and platelet activity are some of the most essential functions regulated by the endothelium that suffer negative effects as a consequence of environmental pollution, causing endothelial dysfunction. In this review, we delineate the impact of environmental risk factors in connection to endothelial function. On a mechanistic level, a significant number of studies suggest the involvement of endothelial dysfunction to fundamentally drive the adverse endothelium health effects of the different pollutants. We focus on well-established studies that demonstrate the negative effects on the endothelium, with a focus on air, noise, and heavy metal pollution. This in-depth review on endothelial dysfunction as a consequence of the physical environment aims to contribute to the associated research needs by evaluating current findings from human and animal studies. From a public health perspective, these findings may also help to reinforce efforts promoting the research for adequate promising biomarkers for cardiovascular diseases since endothelial function is considered a hallmark of environmental stressor health effects.

Synchronous stabilization of As, Cd, and Pb in soil by sustained-release of iron-phosphate

Anionic arsenic (As) exhibits geochemical behavior opposite to those of cationic cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), which makes the synchronous remediation of As, Cd, and Pb challenging. The synchronous stabilization of As, Cd, and Pb to form Cd/Pb-phosphate and iron‑arsenic precipitates is a promising strategy. However, the effectiveness of soluble phosphate or iron-based materials is limited by the activation of Cd, Pb, or As, while low mobility hinders insoluble particles. In this study, we developed an amorphous structure that releases iron and phosphate at a sustained rate. Thus, the stabilization efficiencies of NaHCO₃-extractable As, DTPA-extractable Cd and Pb reached 44.6 %, 40.8 %, and 48.1 %, respectively. The proportion of residual fraction of As, Cd, and Pb increased by 12.1 %, 14.5 %, and 36.4 %, respectively, after 28 d. Ferrihydrite was chosen as the soil component to monitor the chemical behavior and speciation transformation of As, Cd, and Pb in the reaction. During the process, the released iron directly reacted with dissolved As to form iron‑arsenic precipitation and phosphate directly reacted with Cd/Pb to form Cd/Pb-phosphate precipitation. Simultaneously, phosphate replaced the adsorbed As and transformed into a dissolved state, which could be re-precipitated with the released iron ions. Thus, this study provides a reliable strategy for the remediation of As, Cd, and Pb combined pollution in soil.

Plasma membrane-associated calcium signaling modulates cadmium transport

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy element for plant growth and development, and plants have evolved many strategies to cope with Cd stress. However, the mechanisms how plants sense Cd stress and regulate the function of transporters remain very rudimentary. Here, we found that Cd stress induces obvious Ca²⁺ signals in Arabidopsis roots. Furthermore, we identified the calcium-dependent protein kinases CPK21 and CPK23 that interacted with the Cd transporter NRAMP6 through a variety of protein interaction techniques. Then, we confirmed that the cpk21 23 double mutants significantly enhanced the sensitive phenotype of cpk23 single mutant under Cd stress, while the overexpression and continuous activation of CPK21 and CPK23 enhanced plants tolerance to Cd stress. Multiple biochemical and physiological analyses in yeast and plants demonstrated that CPK21/23 phosphorylate NRAMP6 primarily at Ser489 and Thr505 to inhibit the Cd transport activity of NRAMP6, thereby improving the Cd tolerance of plants. Taken together, we found a plasma membrane-associated calcium signaling that modulates Cd tolerance. These results provide new insights into the molecular breeding of crop tolerance to Cd stress.

Chromium Toxicity in Plants: Signaling, Mitigation, and Future Perspectives

Plants are very often confronted by different heavy metal (HM) stressors that adversely impair their growth and productivity. Among HMs, chromium (Cr) is one of the most prevalent toxic trace metals found in agricultural soils because of anthropogenic activities, lack of efficient treatment, and unregulated disposal. It has a huge detrimental impact on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular traits of crops, in addition to being carcinogenic to humans. In soil, Cr exists in different forms, including Cr (III) "trivalent" and Cr (VI) "hexavalent", but the most pervasive and severely hazardous form to the biota is Cr (VI). Despite extensive research on the effects of Cr stress, the exact molecular mechanisms of Cr sensing, uptake, translocation, phytotoxicity, transcript processing, translation, post-translational protein modifications, as well as plant defensive responses are still largely unknown. Even though plants lack a Cr transporter system, it is efficiently accumulated and transported by other essential ion transporters, hence posing a serious challenge to the development of Cr-tolerant cultivars. In this review, we discuss Cr toxicity in plants, signaling perception, and transduction. Further, we highlight various mitigation processes for Cr toxicity in plants, such as microbial, chemical, and nano-based priming. We also discuss the biotechnological advancements in mitigating Cr toxicity in plants using plant and microbiome engineering approaches. Additionally, we also highlight the role of molecular breeding in mitigating Cr toxicity in sustainable agriculture. Finally, some conclusions are drawn along with potential directions for future research in order to better comprehend Cr signaling pathways and its mitigation in sustainable agriculture.

Preliminary Exploration of Metabolic Mechanisms in Copper-Exposed Sepia esculenta Based on Transcriptome Analysis

As a common and high-concentration heavy metal in the ocean, Cu can induce metal toxicity and significantly affect the metabolic function of marine organisms. Sepia esculenta is an important economic cephalopod found along the east coast of China, the growth, movement, and reproduction of which are all affected by heavy metals. Hitherto, the specific metabolic mechanism of heavy-metal exposure in S. esculenta is still unclear. In this study, we identified 1131 DEGs through transcriptome analysis of larval S. esculenta within 24 h of Cu exposure. GO and KEGG functional enrichment analysis results indicated that Cu exposure may affect purine metabolism, protein digestion and absorption, cholesterol metabolism, and other metabolic processes in S. esculenta larvae. It is worth noting that in this study we explore metabolic mechanism of Cu-exposed S. esculenta larvae through the comprehensive analysis of protein–protein interaction network and KEGG enrichment analysis for the first time and find 20 identified key and hub genes such as CYP7A1, CYP3A11, and ABCA1. Based on their expression, we preliminarily speculate that Cu exposure may inhibit multiple metabolic processes and induce metabolic disorders. Our results lay a foundation for further understanding the metabolic mechanism of S. esculenta against heavy metals and provide theoretical help for S. esculenta artificial breeding.

Animal sourced biopolymer for mitigating xenobiotics and hazardous materials

Over the past several decades, xenobiotic chemicals have badly affected the environment including human health, ecosystem and environment. Animal-sourced biopolymers have been employed for the removal of heavy metals and organic dyes from the contaminated soil and waste waters. Animal-sourced biopolymers are biocompatible, cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable in nature which make them a favorable choice for the mitigation of xenobiotic and hazardous compounds. Chitin/chitosan, collagen, gelatin, keratin, and silk fibroin-based biopolymers are the most commonly used biopolymers. This chapter reviews the current challenge faced in applying these animal-based biopolymers in eliminating/neutralizing various recalcitrant chemicals and dyes from the environment. This chapter ends with the discussion on the recent advancements and future development in the employability of these biopolymers in such environmental applications.

Heavy Metals Concentration in Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) from the Moroccan Mediterranean Coast and Potential Human Health Risk Assessment

Due to their toxicity, long persistence, bioaccumulative nature, and biomagnification in the food chain, heavy metals pose a serious hazard. The aim of this study was to evaluate the health risks associated with the consumption of Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) and to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of four potentially toxic metallic elements. Three hundred and sixty specimens of sardine were collected between December 2020 and October 2021 at three Mediterranean coast sites, Beni-Ensar, Ras el Ma, and El-Houceima, in the northeast region of Morocco. The toxic metallic elements were evaluated by assessing the contamination level of cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As) in the muscle, liver, and gills of sardine from the Mediterranean Moroccan coast. The results showed a significant effect of the study area, organ, and season ( $p>0.05$ ) on Moroccan Mediterranean sardine heavy metal contamination levels. Regardless the location and season, the liver presents the higher concentration of the studied metals ( $p<0.05$ ). The highest heavy metal concentrations of Cd (0.408 μg·g−1 wet weight (ww)), Hg (0.044 μg·g−1 ww), and As (6.74 μg·g−1 ww) were found in winter while the concentration of Pb was the highest in autumn (0.056 μg·g−1 ww). Furthermore, the lowest contamination of metal levels was found in the spring. El-Houceima region contains the highest values for Hg (0.093 μg·g−1 ww), Pb (0.018 μg·g−1 ww), and As (7.73 μg·g−1 ww). However, the highest values for Cd (0.172 μg·g−1 ww) were recorded in Beni-Ensar. Regarding the assessment of possible risks to human health, the results showed that the indices are below the established safety values in the case of estimated weekly intake, and target hazard quotient (THQ). In contrast, the carcinogenic risk index and total THQ were above the threshold limits and thus represented a potential carcinogenic risk to human health.

Integrated transcriptome and metabonomic analysis of key metabolic pathways in response to cadmium stress in novel buckwheat and cultivated species

INTRODUCTION

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum), an important food crop, also has medicinal uses. It is widely planted in Southwest China, overlapping with planting areas remarkably polluted by cadmium (Cd). Therefore, it is of great significance to study the response mechanism of buckwheat under Cd stress and further develop varieties with excellent Cd tolerance.

METHODS

In this study, two critical periods of Cd stress treatment (days 7 and 14 after Cd treatment) of cultivated buckwheat (Pinku-1, named K33) and perennial species (F. tatari-cymosum Q.F. Chen) (duoku, named DK19) were analyzed using transcriptome and metabolomics.

RESULTS

The results showed that Cd stress led to changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the chlorophyll system. Moreover, Cd-response genes related to stress response, amino acid metabolism, and ROS scavenging were enriched or activated in DK19. Transcriptome and metabolomic analyses highlighted the important role of galactose, lipid (glycerophosphatide metabolism and glycerophosphatide metabolism), and glutathione metabolism in response to Cd stress in buckwheat, which are significantly enriched at the gene and metabolic levels in DK19.

DISCUSSION

The results of the present study provide valuable information for a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying Cd tolerance in buckwheat and useful clues for the genetic improvement of drought tolerance in buckwheat.

Algae extract delamination of molybdenum disulfide and surface modification with glycidyl methacrylate and polyaniline for the elimination of metal ions from wastewater

A special type of two-dimensional (2D) material based conducting polymer was constructed by green synthesis and in-situ polymerization techniques. The 2D Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS₂) were first synthesized with the combination of, ammonium tetrathiomolybdate dissolved in 20 mL algae extract under stirring. After stirring for about 2 h, and then finally sulfurization was initiated using sulfur powder in 20 mL of sulfuric solution and stirred for 8 h. The resulting black precipitates of MoS₂ were collected by centrifugation at 5000 rpm. Moreover, the prepared MoS₂ was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and form the MoS₂@PGMA. Further, the MoS₂@PGMA is combined with polyaniline (PANI) to form conducting polymer grafted thin film nanosheets named MoS₂@PGMA/PANI with a thickness in micrometer size through grafting method. The prepared materials were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS and EDX techniques. To check the performance of materials the adsorption study was performed. Moreover, the adsorption study toward Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ showed a tremendous results and the maximum adsorption was 307.7 mg/g and 214.7 mg/g respectively. In addition, the pseudo-first and second order models as well as the adsorption isotherm were investigated using the Langmuir and Freundlich model. The results were best fitted with the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models. The regeneration study was also conducted and MoS₂@PGMA/PANI nanosheets can be easily recycled and restored after five successful recycling. The established methodology for preparing the 2D materials and conducting polymer based MoS₂@PGMA/PANI nanosheets is expected to be applicable for other multiple applications.

Heavy metal stabilization remediation in polluted soils with stabilizing materials: a review

The remediation of soil contaminated by heavy metals has long been a concern of academics. This is due to the fact that heavy metals discharged into the environment as a result of natural and anthropogenic activities may have detrimental consequences for human health, the ecological environment, the economy, and society. Metal stabilization has received considerable attention and has shown to be a promising soil remediation option among the several techniques for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. This review discusses various stabilizing materials, including inorganic materials like clay minerals, phosphorus-containing materials, calcium silicon materials, metals, and metal oxides, as well as organic materials like manure, municipal solid waste, and biochar, for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Through diverse remediation processes such as adsorption, complexation, precipitation, and redox reactions, these additives efficiently limit the biological effectiveness of heavy metals in soils. It should also be emphasized that the effectiveness of metal stabilization is influenced by soil pH, organic matter content, amendment type and dosage, heavy metal species and contamination level, and plant variety. Furthermore, a comprehensive overview of the methods for evaluating the effectiveness of heavy metal stabilization based on soil physicochemical properties, heavy metal morphology, and bioactivity has also been provided. At the same time, it is critical to assess the stability and timeliness of the heavy metals' long-term remedial effect. Finally, the priority should be on developing novel, efficient, environmentally friendly, and economically feasible stabilizing agents, as well as establishing a systematic assessment method and criteria for analyzing their long-term effects.

A Molecular Mechanism to Explain the Nickel-Induced Changes in Protamine-like Proteins and Their DNA Binding Affecting Sperm Chromatin in Mytilus galloprovincialis: An In Vitro Study

Nickel is associated with reproductive toxicity, but little is known about the molecular mechanisms of nickel-induced effects on sperm chromatin and protamine-like proteins (PLs). In the present work, we analyzed PLs from Mytilus galloprovincialis by urea-acetic acid polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (AU-PAGE) and SDS-PAGE and assessed their binding to DNA by Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA) after exposing mussels to 5, 15, and 35 µM NiCl2 for 24 h. In addition, a time course of digestion with MNase and release of PLs from sperm nuclei by the NaCl gradient was performed. For all exposure doses, in AU-PAGE, there was an additional migrating band between PL-III and PL-IV, corresponding to a fraction of PLs in the form of peptides detected by SDS-PAGE. Alterations in DNA binding of PLs were observed by EMSA after exposure to 5 and 15 µM NiCl2, while, at all NiCl2 doses, increased accessibility of MNase to sperm chromatin was found. The latter was particularly relevant at 15 µM NiCl2, a dose at which increased release of PLII and PLIII from sperm nuclei and the highest value of nickel accumulated in the gonads were also found. Finally, at all exposure doses, there was also an increase in PARP expression, but especially at 5 µM NiCl2. A possible molecular mechanism for the toxic reproductive effects of nickel in Mytilus galloprovincialis is discussed.

Interactions among heavy metals and methane-metabolizing microorganisms and their effects on methane emissions in Dajiuhu peatland

Peatlands play a crucial role in mediating the emissions of methane through active biogeochemical cycling of accumulated carbon driven by methane-metabolizing microorganisms; meanwhile, they serve as vital archives of atmospheric heavy metal deposition. Despite many edaphic factors confirmed as determinants to modulate the structure of methanotrophic and methanogenic communities, recognition of interactions among them is limited. In this study, peat soils were collected from Dajiuhu peatland to assess the presence of heavy metals, and methanotrophs and methanogens were investigated via high-throughput sequencing for functional genes mcrA and pmoA. Further analyses of the correlations between methane-related functional groups were conducted. The results demonstrated that both methane-metabolizing microorganisms and heavy metals have prominent vertical heterogeneity upward and downward along the depth of 20 cm. Pb, Cd, and Hg strongly correlated with methanotrophs and methanogens across all seasons and depths, serving as forceful factors in structural variations of methanogenic and methanotrophic communities. Particularly, Pb, Cd, and Hg were identified as excessive elements in Dajiuhu peatland. Furthermore, seasonal variations of networks among methane-related functional groups and environmental factors significantly affected the changes of methane fluxes across different seasons. Concretely, the complicated interactions were detrimental to methane emissions in the Dajiuhu peatland, leading to the minimum methane emissions in winter. Our study identified the key heavy metals affecting the composition of methane-metabolizing microorganisms and linkages between seasonal variations of methane emissions and interaction among heavy metals and methane-metabolizing microorganisms, which provided much new reference and theoretical basis for integrated management of natural peatlands.

Interactive Effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and Olive Solid Waste on Wheat under Arsenite Toxicity

Heavy metal such as arsenite (As^III) is a threat worldwide. Thus, to mitigate As^III toxicity on plants, we investigated the interactive effect of olive solid waste (OSW) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on wheat plants under As^III stress. To this end, wheat seeds were grown in soils treated with OSW (4% w/w), AMF-inoculation, and/or As^III treated soil (100 mg/kg soil). AMF colonization is reduced by As^III but to a lesser extent under As^III + OSW. AMF and OSW interactive effects also improved soil fertility and increased wheat plants' growth, particularly under As^III stress. The interactions between OSW and AMF treatments reduced As^III-induced H₂O₂ accumulation. Less H₂O₂ production consequently reduced As^III-related oxidative damages i.e., lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA) (58%), compared to As stress. This can be explained by the increase in wheat's antioxidant defense system. OSW and AMF increased total antioxidant content, phenol, flavonoids, and α-tocopherol by approximately 34%, 63%, 118%, 232%, and 93%, respectively, compared to As stress. The combined effect also significantly induced anthocyanins accumulation. The combination of OSW+AMF improved antioxidants enzymes activity, where superoxide dismutase (SOD, catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) were increased by 98%, 121%, 105%, 129%, and 110.29%, respectively, compared to As^III stress. This can be explained by induced anthocyanin percussors phenylalanine, cinamic acid and naringenin, and biosynthesic enzymes (phenylalanine aminolayse (PAL) and chalcone synthase (CHS)). Overall, this study suggested the effectiveness of OSW and AMF as a promising approach to mitigate As^III toxicity on wheat growth, physiology, and biochemistry.

Characteristics of metal pollution and multi-isotopic signatures for C, Cu, Zn, and Pb in coastal sediments from special management areas in Korea

The concentrations and isotopic compositions of carbon (C), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in coastal sediments were analyzed to identify potential pollution sources. High concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC) and metals were found close to cities and industrial areas. The isotopic compositions of C, Cu, Zn, and Pb tended to decrease as their concentrations increased. Bi-plots between δ⁶⁵Cu and δ⁶⁶Zn showed that the isotopic compositions in most coastal sediments, except sediments around a smelter, were similar to the isotopic compositions of road dust in urban and industrial areas of Korea. Our results suggest that heavy metal pollution in coastal sediments is greatly influenced by the pollution source, such that most metals originate from traffic and industrial activities in the urban environment. This analysis of multiple isotopes provides insights concerning the transport mechanisms and clarifies potential sources of metal contamination in coastal environments.

Effects of cadmium and lead co-exposure on glucocorticoid levels in rural residents of northwest China

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are important environmental endocrine disruptors that are associated with adverse health problems. However, the effects of co-exposure to Cd and Pb on glucocorticoids (GCs) in the body at environmental levels are limited. A total of 468 subjects from the Dongdagou-Xinglong cohort (DDG-XL) were included in this study. We measured the serum levels of two representative endogenous GCs [cortisol (CRL) and cortisone (CRN)], and whole blood levels of Cd and Pb. Multiple linear regression models were constructed to explore the associations of single or combined Cd and Pb exposure with serum CRL and CRN levels. The interactive effects of Cd and Pb on GCs were further assessed using mediation analysis and moderation analysis. Single-heavy metal exposure analysis with adjustment for potential confounders showed that the serum CRL level decreased when the blood Cd or Pb concentration gradually increased (P trend <0.01). Additionally, subjects with high Cd or Pb exposure (Q4) had significantly reduced serum CRN levels compared to those with low Cd or Pb exposure (Q1) (P < 0.05). In Cd and Pb co-exposure analysis, significant negative dose-response relationships were observed between co-exposure to Cd and Pb and serum CRL and CRN levels. Furthermore, mediation analysis showed that Cd completely mediated the relationship between Pb and GCs, and moderation analysis suggested that Pb might weaken the negative relationship between Cd and GCs. These findings suggest that single or combined exposure to Cd and Pb interferes with the homeostasis of serum CRL and CRN levels. Furthermore, we innovatively propose that Cd and Pb may have interactive effects on GCs levels, and Pb can antagonize the negative relationship between Cd and GCs, which may provide clues for further studies on endocrine and metabolic disorders related to these heavy metals.

Micro-Evolutionary Processes in Armeria maritima at Metalliferous Sites

Tolerance to heavy metals in plants is a model process used to study adaptations to extremely unfavorable environments. One species capable of colonizing areas with high contents of heavy metals is Armeria maritima (Mill.) Wild. A. maritima plants growing in metalliferous areas differ in their morphological features and tolerance levels to heavy metals compared to individuals of the same species growing in non-metalliferous areas. The A. maritima adaptations to heavy metals occur at the organismal, tissue, and cellular levels (e.g., the retention of metals in roots, enrichment of the oldest leaves with metals, accumulation of metals in trichomes, and excretion of metals by salt glands of leaf epidermis). This species also undergoes physiological and biochemical adaptations (e.g., the accumulation of metals in vacuoles of the root's tannic cells and secretion of such compounds as glutathione, organic acids, or HSP17). This work reviews the current knowledge on A. maritima adaptations to heavy metals occurring in zinc-lead waste heaps and the species' genetic variation from exposure to such habitats. A. maritima is an excellent example of microevolution processes in plants inhabiting anthropogenically changed areas.

Glutathione primed seed improved lead-stress tolerance in Brassica rapa L. through modulation of physio-biochemical attributes and nutrient uptake

Heavy metal toxicity is a major environmental issue that affects all life forms, including plants. The accumulation of lead (Pb) in agricultural soils is a significant contributor to reduced crop yields, and it poses serious health risks to people who consume lead-contaminated agricultural products. The current study was undertaken to investigate the beneficial effects of glutathione (GSH) on the amelioration of stress induced by Pb (300 mg kg-1 Pb) in Brassica rapa L. (turnip). For this purpose, B. rapa seeds primed with 25, 50, and 75 µmol L-1. The root and shoot length, seedling biomass, and leaf area, was reduced under Pb stress. Lead toxicity inhibited the net photosynthetic rate (31.36%), total chlorophyll content (74.54%) of B. rapa plants in comparison to control. Lead-stressed plants additionally exhibited changes in proline levels, as well as lower levels of total soluble protein and phenolic content. Nevertheless, seed priming with GSH resulted in higher concentrations of the nutritional content (Mg+2, Zn+2, Na+, K+) that increased Pb stress tolerance. The GSH2 treated seed enhanced the photosynthetic rate (46.34%), stomatal conductance (80.55%), and transpiration rate (53.125%) over Pb stress. Furthermore, GSH2 enhanced total soluble proteins (37.75%), phenolic content (58.38%), and DPPH (1.5fold) of turnip plant over control seedlings. According to our research, GSH2 primed B. rapa seed demonstrated a reduction in Pb toxicity, which could be used to help seedling establishment in soils contaminated with Pb.

Exposure of suckling rats to hexavalent chromium (CrVI) alters bone formation at the base of the alveolus causing a delay in tooth eruption

OBJECTIVES

Hexavalent chromium (CrVI)-exposure of suckling rats has been shown to delay tooth eruption. However, the effects of CrVI-exposure on bone formation at the base of the alveolus, which provides a motive force for tooth eruption in the early stages of the process, remain unknown. The present work sought to evaluate the effect of CrVI-exposure on bone formation at the base of the alveolus during the intraosseous stage of tooth eruption in suckling rats, using histomorphometric and immunohistochemical studies.

METHODS

Experimental animals received 12.5 mg/kg-bw/day of potassium dichromate dissolved in saline solution by gavage starting on day 4 of the experiment; controls similarly received an equivalent volume of saline. All the animals were euthanized at the age of 9 days. The base of the developing alveolus at the level of the mesial root of the first lower molar was analyzed histomorphometrically and immunohistochemically. Data were statistically analyzed using student's t-test, with statistical significance set at p <0.05.

RESULTS

CrVI-exposed animals showed lower bone volume and height at the base of the alveolus, a significant preponderance of bone rest on the surface adjacent to the dental follicle, and a significantly lower percentage of positive Runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX2+) osteoblasts and a significantly higher number of mesenchymal-like RUNX2+ cells at the latter site.

CONCLUSION

CrVI-exposure during lactation affects bone formation at the base of the developing alveolus, delaying tooth eruption. These findings underscore the importance of controlling drinking water levels of toxic substances since their effects can alter the growth and development of individuals exposed during early childhood.

Water deficit aggravated the inhibition of photosynthetic performance of maize under mercury stress but is alleviated by brassinosteroids

Mercury (Hg) significantly inhibits maize (Zea mays L.) production, which could be aggravated by water deficit (WD) due to climate change. However, there is no report on the maize in response to combined their stresses. This work was conducted for assessing the response and adaptive mechanism of maize to combined Hg and WD stress using two maize cultivars, Xianyu (XY) 335 and Yudan (YD) 132. The analysis was based on plant growth, physiological function, and transcriptomic data. Compared with the single Hg stress, Hg accumulation in whole plant and translocation factor (TF) under Hg+WD were increased by 64.51 % (1.44 mg kg^-1) and 260.00 %, respectively, for XY 335; and 50.32 % (0.62 mg kg^-1) and 220.02 %, respectively, for YD 132. Combined Hg and WD stress further increased the reactive oxygen species accumulation, aggravated the damage of the thylakoid membrane, and decreased chlorophyll content compared with single stress. For example, Chl a and Chl b contents of XY 335 were significantly decreased by 48.67 % and 28.08 %, respectively at 48 h after Hg+WD treatment compared with Hg stress. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis revealed that most of down-regulated genes were enriched in photosynthetic-antenna proteins, photosynthesis, chlorophyll and porphyrin metabolism pathways (PsbS1, PSBQ1 and FDX1 etc.) under combined stress, reducing light energy capture and electron transport. However, most genes related to the brassinosteroids (BRs) signaling pathway were up-regulated under Hg+WD stress. Correspondingly, exogenous BRs significantly enhanced the maize tolerance to stress by decreasing Hg accumulation and TF, and raising activities of antioxidant enzyme, the content of chlorophyll and photosynthetic performance. The PI, Fv/Fm and Fv/Fo of Hg+WD+BR treatment were increased by 29.88 %, 32.06 %, and 14.56 %, respectively, for XY 335 compared to Hg+WD. Overall, combined Hg and WD stress decreased photosynthetic efficiency by adversely affecting light absorption and electron transport, especially in stress-sensitive variety, but BRs could alleviate the inhibition of photosynthesis, providing a novel strategy for enhancing crop Hg and WD tolerance and food safety.

Heavy Metal Contamination in the Aquatic Ecosystem: Toxicity and Its Remediation Using Eco-Friendly Approaches

Urbanization and industrialization are responsible for environmental contamination in the air, water, and soil. These activities also generate large amounts of heavy metal ions in the environment, and these contaminants cause various types of health issues in humans and other animals. Hexavalent chromium, lead, and cadmium are toxic heavy metal ions that come into the environment through several industrial processes, such as tanning, electroplating, coal mining, agricultural activities, the steel industry, and chrome plating. Several physical and chemical methods are generally used for the heavy metal decontamination of wastewater. These methods have some disadvantages, including the generation of secondary toxic sludge and high operational costs. Hence, there is a need to develop a cost-effective and eco-friendly method for the removal of heavy metal ions from polluted areas. Biological methods are generally considered eco-friendly and cost-effective. This review focuses on heavy metal contamination, its toxicity, and eco-friendly approaches for the removal of heavy metals from contaminated sites.

Effect of farmyard manure, elemental sulphur and EDTA on growth and phytoextraction of cadmium by spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum L.) under Cd stress

Cadmium (Cd) contamination is considered as a widespread concern at global scale which is serious threats to human health. Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly approach which can remove or immobilize Cd from the soil. Different organic and inorganic amendments can potentially enhance Cd phytoremediation efficiency but the comparison of farmyard manure (FM), elemental sulphur (S) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for Cd phytoremediation through spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum L.) remained unanswered. The present study evaluated the efficiency of S (0.1 and 0.2%), EDTA (0.1 and 0.2%, represented as EDTA-0.1 and EDTA-0.2) and FM (0.5 and 1%, represented as FM-0.5 and FM-1) for remediation of Cd contaminated soils (50 and 100 mg kg-1, represented as Cd-50 and Cd-100) through spider plants. Results depicted that the highest shoots and roots dry biomass was found in FM treated plants followed by S, EDTA and control except in EDTA-0.2 treatment in which the lowest values of these parameters were observed. Application of FM-1 significantly increased the shoot dry weight (120%), root dry weight (99%), as well as photosynthetic attributes in Cd-50 as compared to control. Application of EDTA-0.2 increased the bioavailable fraction of Cd than control and the maximum increase was observed in Cd-100. The highest Cd concentrations in shoot and roots were found in EDTA treated plants followed by S, control and FM irrespective of Cd and amendment levels. Maximum Cd in roots (109%) and shoots (156%) was recorded in plants grown in Cd-100 with EDTA-0.2 than control. The maximum bioaccumulation factor, translocation index, harvest index and root to shoot translocation were observed with EDTA than control and other treatments. EDTA along with spider plants may enhance the uptake of Cd but lower biomass production in the highest dose of EDTA may questioned the efficiency of EDTA.

Ecological toxicity of Cd, Pb, Zn, Hg and regulation mechanism in Solanum nigrum L

This study aimed to investigate the combined ecotoxicological effects of Cd, Pb, Zn, Hg and regulation mechanisms in Solanum nigrum L. In this work, the co-exposure of these four heavy metals hindered the transformation of Cd, Zn, and Hg (except Pb) from available to non-available chemical forms. Individual Cd, Pb, Zn and Hg induced the oxidative damages to S. nigrum L., while their combination further enhanced this ecological toxicity. By internal regulation, the ecological toxicity of metals to S. nigrum L. could be alleviated to a certain extent. Specifically, S. nigrum L. was a hyperaccumulator of Cd with BCF ＞1. Moreover, since BCFroot of Pb, Zn and Hg were all greater than BCFshoot, S. nigrum L. could accumulate Pb, Hg and Zn mainly in plant roots, which was beneficial for the detoxification of plants. Meanwhile, the immobilization by cell wall (the proportions of Cd, Pb, Zn and Hg in the cell wall were 54.46-84.92%, 38.33-49.25%, 48.38-56.19% and 45.97-63.47% in low metal concentration treatments) and the sequestration in vacuole (the proportions of Cd, Pb, Zn, and Hg in the soluble fractions are 50.99-59.00%, 41.05-45.46%, 37.54-61.04% and 33.47-61.35% in high metal concentration treatments) also act as important detoxification pathways. The external regulation was mainly the changes of soil microbial communities influenced by plants. Specifically, the richness and diversity of bacteria in rhizosphere soil were increased, and roots of S. nigrum L. recruited some potentially beneficial microbials. This study provided a theoretical basis and guidance for S. nigrum L. as a phytoremediation plant under combined heavy metal pollution.

Optimization and Modeling of Cr (VI) Removal from Tannery Wastewater onto Activated Carbon Prepared from Coffee Husk and Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) as Activating Agent by Using Central Composite Design (CCD)

The primary goal of this research is to lower the hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) concentration that has occurred from the growth of the tannery industry. As a result, the potential for heavy metal concentration is increasing day by day. Industrial effluent containing Cr (VI) contributes significantly to water pollution. Chromium hexavalent ion (Cr (VI)) in wastewater is extremely hazardous to the environment. It is critical to address such a condition using activated carbon derived from biomass. Adsorption is one of the most successful methods for removing hexavalent chromium from wastewater. Treated wastewater has no substantial environmental contamination consequences. The ash content, moisture content, volatile matter content, and fixed carbon content of wet coffee husk were 3.51, 10.85, 68.33, and 17.31, respectively. The physicochemical properties of coffee husk-based activated carbon (CHBAC) obtained during experimentation were pH, porosity, the yield of CHBAC, bulk density, point of zero charges, and specific surface area of 5.2, 58.4 percent, 60.1 percent, 0.71 g/mL, 4.19, and 1396 m2/g, respectively, indicating that CHBAC has a higher capacity as an adsorbent medium. For optimization purposes, the parameters ranged from pH (0.3–3.7), dose (2.3–5.7) $g$ , and contact time (0.3–3.7) hr. The quadratic models were chosen for optimization, and the $p$ value for the model was significant since it was less than 0.05, but the lack of fit model was inconsequential because it was more than 0.05. The optimum adsorption obtained with numerical optimization of Cr (VI) was 97.65 percent. This was obtained at a pH of 1.926, a dose of 4.209 g/L, and a contact time of 2.101 hours. This result was observed at a pH of 1.93, a dosage of 4.2 g/L, and a contact duration of 2.1 hours. The desirability obtained during numerical optimization was 1. Coffee husk-based activated carbon has a bigger surface area, and it has a stronger ability to absorb hexavalent chromium from tannery wastewater effluents.

Contamination Assessment and Potential Human Health Risks of Heavy Metals in Urban Soils from Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA

Heavy metal (HM) pollution of soil is an increasingly serious problem worldwide. The current study assessed the metal levels and ecological and human health risk associated with HMs in Grand Forks urban soils. A total 40 composite surface soil samples were investigated for Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Hg, Cr, Cd and Tl using microwave-assisted HNO3-HCl acid digestion and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. The enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (CF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), ecological risk and potential ecological risk index were used for ecological risk assessment. The park soils revealed the following decreasing trend for metal levels: Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu > Pb > As > Co > Cd > Tl > Hg. Based on mean levels, all the studied HMs except As and Cr were lower than guideline limits set by international agencies. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Cr and Tl may originate from natural sources, while Hg, Pb, As and Cd may come from anthropogenic/mixed sources. The Igeo results showed that the soil was moderately polluted by As and Cd and, based on EF results, As and Cd exhibited significant enrichment. The contamination factor analysis revealed that Zn and Pb showed moderate contamination, Hg exhibited low to moderate contamination and As and Cd showed high contamination in the soil. Comparatively higher risk was noted for children over adults and, overall, As was the major contributor (>50%), followed by Cr (>13%), in the non-carcinogenic risk assessment. Carcinogenic risk assessment revealed that As and Cr pose significant risks to the populations associated with this urban soil. Lastly, this study showed that the soil was moderately contaminated by As, Cd, Pb and Hg and should be regularly monitored for metal contamination.

Mercury in multimedia system of Itacaiúnas Basin, Brazilian Amazon: An integrated approach to understand its distribution, origin, and ecological risk

This study presents the first integrated study on total Hg (THg) level in surface soil (SS), bottom soil (BS), stream sediments (SD), lake sediments (LS), stream water (SW), and lake water (LW) of Itacaiúnas River Watershed (IRW), Brazil, to investigate the source and distribution of Hg in different environmental media considering contrasts of geological domains and sub-basins, and its potential ecological and human risk. Hg content in most of the soils and sediments were above the upper crustal average values (56 μg/kg), however, when compared to the legal limits set by the Resolution CONAMA (Conselho Nacional de Meio Ambiente: soil 500 μg/kg; sediment 486 μg/kg), only 1 soil sample from Parauapebas sub-basin and 4 sediment samples from Violão Lake exceeded the limit. None of the SW and LW samples (<0.2 μg/L) are markedly contaminated by Hg. The SS and BS show similar contents and spatial distribution of Hg with higher contents being registered mostly in the Itacaiúnas and Parauapebas sub-basins, which are closely correlated with SD. This suggests that Hg levels are largely of geogenic origin and anthropogenic effect is highly limited. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) results show that Hg is strongly associated with total organic carbon (TOC), loss on ignition (LOI), and SO₃, indicating organic matter as the main factor controlling the distribution of Hg and this is the major cause of accentuated Hg enrichment in lake sediments. The ecological risk index revealed a low pollution risk for most of the solid samples, except 11% LS and <1.5% SS and SD samples, which registered moderate risk. Health risk assessment indicated no adverse non-carcinogenic health effect on either adults and children in terms of Hg contamination. This information will be useful for Hg risk assessment in the Carajás region and future environmental research in this direction in the Amazonia.

Joint Effect of Multiple Metals on Hyperuricemia and Their Interaction with Obesity: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study in China

Metal exposures have been inconsistently related to the risk of hyperuricemia, and limited research has investigated the interaction between obesity and metals in hyperuricemia. To explore their associations and interaction effects, 3300 participants were enrolled from 11 districts within 1 province in China, and the blood concentrations of 13 metals were measured to assess internal exposure. Multivariable logistic regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS), Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and interaction analysis were applied in the single- and multi-metal models. In single-metal models, five metals (V, Cr, Mn, Co, and Zn) were positively associated with hyperuricemia in males, but V was negatively associated with hyperuricemia in females. Following the multi-metal logistic regression, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of hyperuricemia were 1.7 (1.18, 2.45) for Cr and 1.76 (1.26, 2.46) for Co in males, and 0.68 (0.47, 0.99) for V in females. For V and Co, RCS models revealed wavy and inverted V-shaped negative associations with female hyperuricemia risk. The BKMR models showed a significant joint effect of multiple metals on hyperuricemia when the concentrations of five metals were at or above their 55th percentile compared to their median values, and V, Cr, Mn, and Co were major contributors to the combined effect. A potential interaction between Cr and obesity and Zn and obesity in increasing the risk of hyperuricemia was observed. Our results suggest that higher levels of Cr and Co may increase male hyperuricemia risk, while higher levels of V may decrease female hyperuricemia risk. Therefore, the management of metal exposure in the environment and diet should be improved to prevent hyperuricemia.

Exposure to Heavy Metals and Serum Adiponectin Levels among Workers: A 2-Year Follow-Up Study

The workers exposed to metal fumes had an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, which was correlated with decreased serum adiponectin. Thus, we aimed to explore whether heavy metal exposure affects the adiponectin level. There were 96 male workers recruited from a shipyard at baseline. Apart from 82 participants completed the follow-up assessments, new participants were recruited in next year. Finally, there were 100 welding workers in the exposure group and 31 office workers in the control group. Inferential statistics on repeated measures were performed using generalized estimating equations. A weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression model was conducted to examine the joint effect of the multimetal exposure with serum adiponectin. Significantly negative associations of metals with adiponectin were detected in the welding workers, including Cr (β = -0.088; 95% CI: -0.148, -0.027), Mn (β = -0.174; 95% CI: -0.267, -0.081), Co (β = -0.094; 95% CI: -0.158, -0.029), Ni (β = -0.108; 95% CI: -0.208, -0.008), Cd (β = -0.067; 95% CI: -0.115, -0.018), and Pb (β = -0.089; 95% CI: -0.163, -0.015). The WQS regression suggested that Pb was the greatest contributor. In conclusion, our findings highlighted that welding workers exposed to heavy metals would reduce serum adiponectin.

Selective recognition of Hg2+ ions in aqueous solution by a CdII-based metal-organic framework with good stability and vacant coordination sites

A novel water-stable Cd^II-based metal-organic framework, namely {[Cd(BIBT)(TDC)]·2H₂O}_n (JXUST-28, BIBT = 4,7-bi(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzo-[2,1,3]thiadiazole and H₂TDC = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid), was synthesized using a mixed-ligand strategy. Structural analysis demonstrates that JXUST-28 exhibits a two-dimensional layer structure with 4-connected sql topology. Intriguingly, JXUST-28 presents good stability in boiling water (at least 5 days), common organic solvents and aqueous solutions with different pH values of 2-12 (more than 24 hours). Furthermore, fluorescence experiments revealed that JXUST-28 could sense Hg²⁺ ions in aqueous solution via a quenching effect with a detection limit of 0.097 μM. Meanwhile, JXUST-28 can also be regenerated at least 5 times to detect Hg²⁺ ions. In addition, light-emitting diode lamps, luminescent films, and test papers of JXUST-28 have been successfully developed for practical applications.

Mixed heavy metals exposure affects the renal function mediated by 8-OHG: A cross-sectional study in rural residents of China

Heavy metals are important risk factors for kidney, but their co-exposure effect on kidney and related mechanism remain unclear. This study evaluated the relationship between heavy metals and renal function, and the feasible mediation effect of oxidative stress. Based on the Dongdagou-Xinglong cohort, participants were recruited and their information were collected through questionnaires and physical examinations. The urine concentration of heavy metals like Cobalt, Nickel, Molybdenum, Cadmium, Antimony, Copper, Zinc, Mercury, Lead, Manganese, and renal injury biomarkers like β2-microglobulin, β-N-Acetylglucosaminidase, retinol-binding protein, 8-hydroxyguanine (8-OHG) were measured and corrected by creatinine. Linear regression was conducted to analyze the relationship between metals and renal biomarkers. Bayesian kernel machine regression, weighted quantile sum and quantile-based g-computation were applied to analyze the association between metal mixtures and renal biomarkers. Finally, the mediating effect of 8-OHG was analyzed through the mediation model. We found that these metals were positively related with renal biomarkers, where copper showed the strongest relationship. The co-exposure models showed that renal biomarkers increased with the concentration of mixtures, particularly for cadmium, copper, mercury, manganese. In addition, the proportion of 8-OHG in mediating effect of metals on renal function ranged from 2.6% to 86.9%. Accordingly, the renal function damage is positively associated with metals, and 8-OHG may play an important mediating role.

Spatial Distribution, Pollution, and Ecological Risk Assessment of Metal(loid)s in Multiple Spheres of the Shennongjia Alpine Critical Zone, Central China

The development of Earth's critical zone concept has strengthened the capacity of environmental science to better solve real-world problems, such as metal(loid) pollution in the remote alpine areas. The selected metal(loid) contents in soil, moss, and water were investigated to explore the geochemical distribution patterns, pollution levels, and potential ecological risks of metal(loid)s in the Shennongjia (SNJ) alpine critical zone of central China. The distribution of metal(loid)s in different spheres had horizontal and vertical differences. The maximum V, Ni, and Zn contents in water occurred at the sampling sites close to the Hohhot-Beihai Highway, while Dajiuhu Lake had the maximum Cu, Cr, and Mn contents. Most metal(loid) contents in the mosses showed an increasing trend from the northeast low-altitude area to the southwest high-altitude area, while As, Co, V, Ni, Cr, and Zn in soil decreased significantly with altitude and were enriched near the service areas and the highway. The contents of water Co and Ni, soil Cu and Mn, and moss As were evenly distributed and showed no significant differences with altitude. The enrichment factors, pollution index, Nemerow integrated pollution index, geo-accumulation index, heavy metal pollution index, contamination factor, and potential ecological risk index (PERI) were used to assess the pollution levels and ecological risks of SNJ soil, water, and atmosphere. The overall pollution levels of SNJ soil, moss, and water were low to moderate, low, and low, respectively. Soil V, Cu, Zn, moss As, Co, V, and Dajiuhu Lake water Mn were the main pollution factors. The ecological risks in the three spheres of the SNJ alpine critical zone were low to moderate, and As, Co, and V were the most critical potential ecological risk factors. The metal(loid)s pollution problem caused by the continuous development of tourism needs further attention.

Physiological, biochemical, and genomic elucidation of the Ensifer adhaerens M8 strain with simultaneous arsenic oxidation and chromium reduction

This study reports the simultaneous oxidation of As(III) and reduction of the Cr(VI) strain Ensifer adhaerens M8 screened from soils around abandoned gold tailings contaminated with highly complex metals (loids). Physiological, biochemical, and genomic techniques were used to explore the mechanism. The strain M8 could simultaneously oxidize 1 mM As(III) and reduce 45.3 % 0.1 mM Cr(VI) in 16 h, and the Cr(VI) reduction rate was increased by 5.8 % compared with the addition of Cr(VI) alone. Cellular debris was the main site of M8 arsenic oxidation. Chromium reduction was dominated by the reduction of extracellular hexavalent chromium (23.80-35.67 %). The genome of M8 included one chromosome and four plasmids, and a comparison of the genomes showed that M8 had two more plasmids than strains of the same genus, which may be related to strong environmental adaptations. M8 had 10 heavy metal resistance genes (HMRs), and plasmid D had a complete cluster of arsenic resistance-oxidation-transport genes (arsOHBCCR-aioSR-aioBA-cytCmoeA-phoBBU-PstBACS-phnCDEE). The genes involved in Cr(VI) detoxification include DNA repair (RecG, ruvABC, and UvrD), Cr(VI) transport (chrA, TonB, and CysAPTW) and Cr(VI) reduction. In summary, this study provides a molecular basis for As (III) and Cr (VI) remediation.

Establishment of hairy root system of transgenic IRT1 brassica campestris L. and preliminary study of its effect on cadmium enrichment

Cadmium (Cd) is the main heavy metal pollutant in soil. The combination of genetic engineering technology and Rizobium rhizogenes mediated technology can effectively improve the enrichment efficiency of heavy metals in super accumulators and reduce soil heavy metal pollution. In this study, the transgenic hairy root system containing the IRT1 gene of Cd hyperaccumulator-Brassica campestris L. was successfully constructed by the R. rhizogenes mediated method (IRT1 gene come from Arabidopsis thaliana). The hairy roots of each subculture can grow stably within 6 weeks, and IRT1 gene will not be lost within 50 subcultures., which is detected using PCR method. The results of Cd enrichment experiments showed that after treatment with 100 µmol/L Cd for 14 days, the growth state of transgenic IRT1 hairy roots only showed slight browning. Also, the accumulation value of Cd reached 331.61 µg/g and the enrichment efficiency of transgenic IRT1 hairy roots was 13.8% higher than that of wild-type hairy roots. Western blotting results showed that the expression of IRT1 protein in transgenic hairy roots was significantly higher than that of wild-type hairy roots under Cd stress. The above results indicated that the overexpression of IRT1 gene can help B. campestris L. hairy roots to effectively cope with Cd stress and improve its ability to enrich Cd.

Luteolin alleviates inorganic mercury-induced liver injury in quails by resisting oxidative stress and promoting mercury ion excretion

BackgroundInorganic mercury is a well-known toxic substance that can cause oxidative stress and liver damage. Luteolin (Lut) is a kind of natural antioxidant, which is widely found in plants. Therefore, we focused on exploring the alleviative effect of Lut on liver injury induced by mercuric chloride (HgCl₂), and the potential molecular mechanism of eliminating mercury ions in quails.Methods and resultsTwenty-one-day-old male quails were randomly split into four groups: control group, Lut group, HgCl₂ group, and HgCl₂ + Lut group. The test period was 12 weeks. The results showed that Lut could significantly ameliorate oxidative stress, the release of inflammatory factors, and liver damage caused by HgCl_2, and reduce the accumulation of Hg²⁺ in quail liver. Furthermore, Lut evidently increased the levels of protein kinase C α (PKCα), nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and its downstream proteins, and inhibited nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) production in the liver of quails treated by HgCl₂.ConclusionsTo sum up, our results suggest that Lut not only reduces the levels of oxidative stress and inflammation, but also promotes the excretion of Hg²⁺ by promoting the PKCα/Nrf2 signaling pathway to alleviate HgCl₂-induced liver injury in quails.

Enhancement of chromate phytoremediation and soil reclamation potential of Brassica campestris L. by Aspergillus niger

In the past decades, chromium contamination of agricultural land has become an emerging concern. For land reclamation, several strategies including bioremediation have been used. Owing the potential of hyperaccumulators, the current project aims to enhance the phytoremediation potential of Brassica campestris L. with the application of chromate tolerant endophytic fungus Aspergillus niger CSR3. when B. campestris was watered with chromate concentration (300, 500, and 1000 ppm) in the form of potassium chromate (K₂CrO₄), seed germination, hypocotyl length, root shoot length, and leaf area were severely reduced (p < 0.05). However, reproductive parts of the plants remained viable once initiated. Inoculation of the selected endophyte stimulated host growth, reducing the severity of the chromate stress. Interestingly, CSR3-inoculated plants accumulated 1.82-, 1.51-, and 2.16-fold greater quantities of chromate than the un-inoculated plants. To cope better with the stress, endophyte-associated host had stronger antioxidant system supported by enhanced production of nonenzymatic antioxidants (flavonoids, phenolics, and proline) and enzymatic antioxidants (SOD, CAT, APX, and POD) than the non-endophytes host plants. It may be concluded that hyperaccumulator B. campestris accumulates even higher quantities of chromate in the presence of endophytic A. niger CSR3 and tolerates elevated levels of chromate with boosted antioxidant system. Thus, hyperaccumulator host associated with heavy metal tolerant endophytic fungi can be the possible efficient way to reclaim the contaminated site from the heavy metals effectively in a short time period.

The recent development of inverse vulcanized polysulfide as an alternative adsorbent for heavy metal removal in wastewater

Inverse vulcanized polysulfides have been used as low-cost and effective adsorbents to remediate heavy metals in wastewater. Inverse vulcanization introduces sustainable polysulfide synthesis by solving the rapid desulfurization problem of unstable polysulfides, and provides superior performance compared to conventional commercial adsorbents. The review discussed the brief applications of the inverse vulcanized polysulfides to remove heavy metal wastewater and emphasized the modified synthesis processes for enhanced uptake ratios. The characteristics of polysulfide adsorbents, which play a vital role during the removal process are highlighted with a proper discussion of the interaction between metal ions and polysulfides. The review paper concludes with remarks on the future outlook of these low-cost adsorbents with high selectivity to heavy metals. These polysulfide adsorbents can be prepared using a wide variety of crosslinker monomers including organic hydrocarbons, cooking oils, and agro-based waste materials. They have shown good surface area and excellent metal-binding capabilities compared to the commercially available adsorbents. Proper postmodification processes have enabled the benefits of repetitive uses of the polysulfide adsorbents. The improved surface area obtained by appropriate choice of crosslinkers, modified synthesis techniques, and regeneration through post-modification has made inverse vulcanized polysulfides capable of removing.

The distribution and speciation of dissolved Cd and Pb in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea, China

The speciation of dissolved trace metals is important due to its closely linkage with toxicity and bioavailability in seawater. We investigate the speciation of dissolved Pb (DPb) and Cd (DCd), and their spatial distributions in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, China. The results showed that the organic complexation of DPb and DCd accounted for 35 ± 14 % and 75 ± 10 % of their dissolved concentrations, respectively. The measured free ion activity of Cd ({Cd^{2 +}}) and organic ligand concentration of Cd ([L_Cd]) were highest near the Yellow River mouth, where the free ion activity of Pb ({Pb²⁺}) were also found to be the highest. In this study, both {Pb²⁺} and {Cd²⁺} did not exceed the toxicity threshold, and they were identified not toxic in the waters of the Yellow Sea and Bohai Seas, but biological accumulation effects potentially exist.

Birth Size Outcomes in Relation to Maternal Blood Levels of Some Essential and Toxic Elements

Exposures to toxic trace elements and deficiencies of essential trace elements during pregnancy may impact fetal growth. This study was conducted to determine the association between maternal blood levels of essential elements including manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) and toxic elements including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) at the first trimester with neonatal anthropometric parameters. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019-2020 in Isfahan, Iran. Overall, 263 mother-infant pairs were recruited in the first trimester of pregnancy. Maternal whole blood was collected, and essential and toxic elements were determined by mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)-based method. Birth size measurements were performed according to standardized protocols. Geometric means and standard deviations of maternal blood concentrations of Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb were 3.94 ± 0.82, 5.22 ± 0.57, 7.67 ± 0.58, 2.21 ± 0.77, - 0.59 ± 0.98, and 3.23 ± 0.72 µg/l, respectively. Mean age of mothers was 29.94 ± 5.22 years. Thirty-one (12.1%) neonates were preterm. Maternal blood Pb levels were negatively correlated with birth weight (β = - 0.22 (CI 95%: - 0.38, - 0.05) p = 0.010) and marginally with birth head circumference (β = - 0.14(CI 95%: - 0.29, 0.02), P = 0.094) after adjustment for potential confounder variables. There was no significant association between Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and birth size measurements. Reverse association was found between maternal blood Pb levels and birth weight and birth head circumference. There is limited evidence related to the association between essential and toxic elements during pregnancy with birth size measurements and pregnancy disorders. More studies are suggested to assess of the effect of the trace elements and birth outcomes.

Sensitivity of Zea mays and Soil Microorganisms to the Toxic Effect of Chromium (VI)

Chromium is used in many settings, and hence, it can easily enter the natural environment. It exists in several oxidation states. In soil, depending on its oxidation-reduction potential, it can occur in bivalent, trivalent or hexavalent forms. Hexavalent chromium compounds are cancerogenic to humans. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Cr(VI) on the structure of bacteria and fungi in soil, to find out how this effect is modified by humic acids and to determine the response of Zea mays to this form of chromium. A pot experiment was conducted to answer the above questions. Zea mays was sown in natural soil and soil polluted with Cr(VI) in an amount of 60 mg kg-1 d.m. Both soils were treated with humic acids in the form of HumiAgra preparation. The ecophysiological and genetic diversity of bacteria and fungi was assayed in soil under maize (not sown with Zea mays). In addition, the following were determined: yield of maize, greenness index, index of tolerance to chromium, translocation index and accumulation of chromium in the plant. It has been determined that Cr(VI) significantly distorts the growth and development of Zea mays, while humic acids completely neutralize its toxic effect on the plant. This element had an adverse effect on the development of bacteria of the genera Cellulosimicrobium, Kaistobacter, Rhodanobacter, Rhodoplanes and Nocardioides and fungi of the genera Chaetomium and Humicola. Soil contamination with Cr(VI) significantly diminished the genetic diversity and richness of bacteria and the ecophysiological diversity of fungi. The negative impact of Cr(VI) on the diversity of bacteria and fungi was mollified by Zea mays and the application of humic acids.

UVB-Pretreatment-Enhanced Cadmium Absorption and Enrichment in Poplar Plants

The phenomenon of cross adaptation refers to the ability of plants to improve their resistance to other stress after experiencing one type of stress. However, there are limited reports on how ultraviolet radiation B (UVB) pretreatment affects the enrichment, transport, and tolerance of cadmium (Cd) in plants. Since an appropriate UVB pretreatment has been reported to change plant tolerance to stress, we hypothesized that this application could alter plant uptake and tolerance to heavy metals. In this study, a woody plant species, 84K poplar (Populus alba × Populus glandulosa), was pretreated with UVB and then subjected to Cd treatment. The RT-qPCR results indicated that the UVB-treated plants could affect the expression of Cd uptake, transport, and detoxification-related genes in plants, and that the UVB-Pretreatment induced the ability of Cd absorption in plants, which significantly enriched Cd accumulation in several plant organs, especially in the leaves and roots. The above results showed that the UVB-Pretreatment further increased the toxicity of Cd to plants in UVB-Cd group, which was shown as increased leaf malonaldehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) content, as well as downregulated activities of antioxidant enzymes such as Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), and Ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Therefore, poplar plants in the UVB-Cd group presented a decreased photosynthesis and leaf chlorosis. In summary, the UVB treatment improved the Cd accumulation ability of poplar plants, which could provide some guidance for the potential application of forest trees in the phytoremediation of heavy metals in the future.

Elucidating the spatial determinants of heavy metals pollution in different agricultural soils using geographically weighted regression

Intensive human activities caused massive socio-economic and land-use changes that directly or indirectly resulted in excessive accumulation of heavy metals in agricultural soils. The goal of our study was to explore the spatial determinants of heavy metals pollution for agricultural soil environment in Sunan economic region of China. We applied geographically weighted regressions (GWR) to measure the spatially varying relationship as well as conducted principal component analysis (PCA) to incorporate multiple variables. The results indicated that our GWR models performed well to identify the determinants of heavy metal pollution in different agricultural soils with relatively high values of local R². Heavy metal pollution in Sunan economic region was crucially determined by accessibility, varying agricultural inputs as well as the composition and configuration of agricultural landscape, and such impacts exhibited significantly heterogeneity over space and farming practices. For the both agricultural soils, the major variance proportion for our determinants can be grouped into the first four factors (82.64 % for cash-crop soils and 73.065 for cereal-crop soils), indicating the incorporation and interactions between variables determining agricultural soil environment. Our findings yielded valuable insights into understanding the spatially varying 'human-land interrelationship' in rapidly developing areas. Methodologically, our study highlighted the applicability of geographically weighted regression to explore the spatial determinants associated with unwanted environmental outcomes in large areas.

The cGAS-STING-autophagy pathway: Novel perspectives in neurotoxicity induced by manganese exposure

Chronic high-level heavy metal exposure increases the risk of developing different neurodegenerative diseases. Chronic excessive manganese (Mn) exposure is known to lead to neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, some evidence suggests that autophagy dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases. Over the past decade, the DNA-sensing receptor cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) and its downstream signal-efficient interferon gene stimulator (STING), as well as the molecular composition and regulatory mechanisms of this pathway have been well understood. The cGAS-STING pathway has emerged as a crucial mechanism to induce effective innate immune responses by inducing type I interferons in mammalian cells. Moreover, recent studies have found that Mn²⁺ is the second activator of the cGAS-STING pathway besides dsDNA, and inducing autophagy is a primitive function for the activation of the cGAS-STING pathway. However, overactivation of the immune response can lead to tissue damage. This review discusses the mechanism of neurotoxicity induced by Mn exposure from the cGAS-STING-autophagy pathway. Future work exploiting the cGAS-STING-autophagy pathway may provide a novel perspective for manganese neurotoxicity.
