Atoms, molecules, solids, and surfaces: Applications of the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation

Theoretical investigation of synergistically boosting the anchoring and electrochemical performance of lithiophilic/sulfiphilic transition metal carbides for lithium-sulfur batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the most promising next-generation energy-storage systems with a high energy density and low cost. However, their commercial applications face several challenges, such as the shuttle effect caused by the soluble lithium polysulfide (LiPSs) intermediates and the sluggish sulfur redox reaction. In this article, we systematically investigated the anchoring and electrochemical performance of a series of transition metal carbides (TMCs: TiC, VC, ZrC, NbC, HfC, TaC) as cathode materials for Li-S batteries by theoretical calculations. The lithiophilic/sulfiphilic non-polar (001) surfaces of TMCs can offer moderate binding strength with LiPS intermediates, ensuring good performance of sulfur immobilization. These TMCs can also facilitate lithium diffusion, indicating the good rate performance of Li-S batteries. We also demonstrated that the studied TMCs can be classified into two classes according to their catalytic activity for Li2S decomposition which originated from their different electronic structural features. Furthermore, TiC, ZrC, and HfC exhibited excellent bifunctional electrochemical activity through reducing the Gibbs free energy for sulfur reduction reactions (SRRs) and lowering the barrier for Li2S decomposition which facilitates accelerating electrode kinetics and elevating utilization of sulfur. Our results offer a systematic approach to designing and screening non-polar materials for high-performance Li-S batteries, based on the rational electronic structure and lattice match strategy.

Two-Dimensional Cr5Te8@Graphite Heterostructure for Efficient Electromagnetic Microwave Absorption

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) hold great promise as novel microwave absorption materials owing to their interlayer interactions and unique magnetoelectric properties. However, overcoming the impedance mismatch at the low loading is still a challenge for TMCs due to the restricted loss pathways caused by their high-density characteristic. Here, an interface engineering based on the heterostructure of 2D Cr5Te8 and graphite is in situ constructed via a one-step chemical vapor deposit to modulate impedance matching and introduce multiple attenuation mechanisms. Intriguingly, the Cr5Te8@EG (ECT) heterostructure exhibits a minimum reflection loss of up to - 57.6 dB at 15.4 GHz with a thin thickness of only 1.4 mm under a low filling rate of 10%. The density functional theory calculations confirm that the splendid performance of ECT heterostructure primarily derives from charge redistribution at the abundant intimate interfaces, thereby reinforcing interfacial polarization loss. Furthermore, the ECT coating displays a remarkable radar cross section reduction of 31.9 dB m2, demonstrating a great radar microwave scattering ability. This work sheds light on the interfacial coupled stimulus response mechanism of TMC-based heterogeneous structures and provides a feasible strategy to manipulate high-quality TMCs for excellent microwave absorbers.

Modulation of the morphotropic phase boundary for high-performance ductile thermoelectric materials

The flexible thermoelectric technique, which can convert heat from the human body to electricity via the Seebeck effect, is expected to provide a peerless solution for the power supply of wearables. The recent discovery of ductile semiconductors has opened a new avenue for flexible thermoelectric technology, but their power factor and figure-of-merit values are still much lower than those of classic thermoelectric materials. Herein, we demonstrate the presence of morphotropic phase boundary in Ag2Se-Ag2S pseudobinary compounds. The morphotropic phase boundary can be freely tuned by adjusting the material thermal treatment processes. High-performance ductile thermoelectric materials with excellent power factor (22 μWcm-1 K-2) and figure-of-merit (0.61) values are realized near the morphotropic phase boundary at 300 K. These materials perform better than all existing ductile inorganic semiconductors and organic materials. Furthermore, the in-plane flexible thermoelectric device based on these high-performance thermoelectric materials demonstrates a normalized maximum power density reaching 0.26 Wm-1 under a temperature gradient of 20 K, which is at least two orders of magnitude higher than those of flexible organic thermoelectric devices. This work can greatly accelerate the development of flexible thermoelectric technology.

Regulating the Innocuity of Urea Electro-Oxidation via Cation-mediated Adsorption

Urea electrolysis is an emerging technology that bridges efficient wastewater treatment and hydrogen production with lower electricity costs. However, conventional Ni-based catalysts could easily overoxidize urea into the secondary contaminant NOx - , and enhancing the innocuity of urea electrolysis remains a grand challenge to be achieved. Herein, we tailored the electrode-electrolyte interface of an unconventional cation effect on the anodic oxidation of urea to regulate its activity and selectivity. Smaller cations of Li+ were discovered to increase the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of the innocuous N2 product from the standard value of ~15 % to 45 %, while decreasing the FEs of the over-oxidized NOx - product from ~80 % to 46 %, pointing to a more sustainable process. The kinetic and computational analysis revealed the dominant residence of cations on the outer Helmholtz layer, which forms the interactions with the surface adsorbates. The Li+ hydration shells and rigid hydrogen bonding network interact strongly with the adsorbed urea to decrease its adsorption energy and subjection to C-N cleavage, thereby directing it toward the N2 pathway. This work emphasizes the tuning of the interactions within the electrode-electrolyte interface for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of electrocatalytic processes.

Modulating Electron Density of Ni-N-C Sites by N-doped Ni for Industrial-level CO2 Electroreduction in Acidic Media

Electro-chemically reducing CO2 in a highly acidic medium is promising for addressing the issue of carbonate accumulation. However, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) typically dominates the acidic CO2 reduction. Herein, we construct an efficient electro-catalyst for CO formation based on a core-shell structure, where nitrogen-doped Ni nanoparticles coexist with nitrogen-coordinated Ni single atoms. The optimal catalyst demonstrates a significantly improved CO faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.7 % in the acidic electrolyte (pH=1) at an industrial-scale current density of 500 mA cm-2 . Notably, the optimal catalyst maintains a high FE of CO exceeding 90 % (current density=500 mA cm-2 ) in the electrolyte with a wide pH range from 0.67 to 14. In-situ spectroscopic characterization and density functional theory calculations show that the local electron density of Ni-N-C sites is enhanced by N-doped Ni particles, which facilitates the formation of *COOH intermediate and the adsorption of *CO. This study demonstrates the potential of a hybrid metal/Ni-N-C interface in boosting acidic CO2 electro-reduction.

Development of molecular cluster models to probe pyrite surface reactivity

The recent discovery that anaerobic methanogens can reductively dissolve pyrite and utilize dissolution products as a source of iron and sulfur to meet their biosynthetic demands for these elements prompted the development of atomic-scale nanoparticle models, as maquettes of reactive surface sites, for describing the fundamental redox steps that take place at the mineral surface during reduction. The given report describes our computational approach for modeling n(FeS2 ) nanoparticles originated from mineral bulk structure. These maquettes contain a comprehensive set of coordinatively unsaturated Fe(II) sites that are connected via a range of persulfide (S2 2- ) ligation. In addition to the specific maquettes with n = 8, 18, and 32 FeS2 units, we established guidelines for obtaining low-energy structures by considering the pattern of ionic, covalent, and magnetic interactions among the metal and ligand sites. The developed models serve as computational nano-reactors that can be used to describe the reductive dissolution mechanism of pyrite to better understand the reactive sites on the mineral, where microbial extracellular electron-transfer reactions can occur.

Cobalt vacancy-originated TiMnCoCN compounds with a self-adjusting ability for the high-efficiency acidic oxygen evolution reaction

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in acidic media, except for precious IrO2, have difficulty realizing good electrocatalytic activity and high electrochemical stability simultaneously. However, the scarcity of IrO2 as an acidic OER electrocatalyst impedes its large-scale application in hydrogen generation, organic synthesis, nonferrous metal production and sewage disposal. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of a nanoporous TiMnCoCN compound based on the nanoscale Kirkendall effect, possessing an intriguing self-adjusting capability for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The nanoporous TiMnCoCN compound electrode for the acidic OER displays a low overpotential of 143 mV for 10 mA cm-2 and exhibits no increase in potential over 50,000 s, which is ascribed to the self-adjusting ability, Carbon/nitrogen (C/N) incorporation and nanoporous architecture. The concentration of inert TiO2 on the reconstructed surface of the compound can self-adjust with the change in OER potential via a cobalt-dissolved vacancy approach according to the stabilization requirement. In this work, the self-reconstruction law of surface structure was discovered, providing a novel strategy for designing and fabricating nonnoble OER electrocatalysts with superior catalytic performance and robust stability in acidic media.

Constructing Mixed Density Functionals for Describing Dissociative Chemisorption on Metal Surfaces: Basic Principles

The production of a majority of chemicals involves heterogeneous catalysis at some stage, and the rates of many heterogeneously catalyzed processes are governed by transition states for dissociative chemisorption on metals. Accurate values of barrier heights for dissociative chemisorption on metals are therefore important to benchmarking electronic structure theory in general and density functionals in particular. Such accurate barriers can be obtained using the semiempirical specific reaction parameter (SRP) approach to density functional theory. However, this approach has thus far been rather ad hoc in its choice of the generic expression of the SRP functional to be used, and there is a need for better heuristic approaches to determining the mixing parameters contained in such expressions. Here we address these two issues. We investigate the ability of several mixed, parametrized density functional expressions combining exchange at the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) level with either GGA or nonlocal correlation to reproduce barrier heights for dissociative chemisorption on metal surfaces. For this, seven expressions of such mixed density functionals are tested on a database consisting of results for 16 systems taken from a recently published slightly larger database called SBH17. Three expressions are derived that exhibit high tunability and use correlation functionals that are either of the PBE GGA form or of one of two limiting nonlocal forms also describing the attractive van der Waals interaction in an approximate way. We also find that, for mixed density functionals incorporating GGA correlation, the optimum fraction of repulsive RPBE GGA exchange obtained with a specific GGA density functional is correlated with the charge-transfer parameter, which is equal to the difference in the work function of the metal surface and the electron affinity of the molecule. However, the correlation is generally not large and not large enough to obtain accurate guesses of the mixing parameter for the systems considered, suggesting that it does not give rise to a very effective search strategy.

Simulating Crystal Structure, Acidity, Proton Distribution, and IR Spectra of Acid Zeolite HSAPO-34: A High Accuracy Study

It is a challenge to characterize the acid properties of microporous materials in either experiments or theory. This study presents the crystal structure, acid site, acid strength, proton siting, and IR spectra of HSAPO-34 from the SCAN + rVV10 method. The results indicate: the crystal structures of various acid sites of HSAPO-34 deviate from the space group of R3¯; the acid strength inferred from the DPE value likely decreases with the proton binding sites at O(2), O(4), O(1),and O(3), contrary to the stability order in view of the internal energy; the calculated ensemble-averaged DPE is about 1525 kJ/mol at 673.15 K; and the proton siting and the proton distribution are distinctly influenced by the temperature: at low temperatures, the proton is predominantly located at O(3), while it prefers O(2) at high temperatures, and the proton at O(4) assumedly has the least distribution at 273.15-773.15 K. In line with the neutron diffraction experiment, a correction factor of 0.979 is needed to correct for the calculated hydroxyl stretching vibration (ν(O-H)) of HSAPO-34. It seems that the SCAN meta-GGA method, compensating for some drawbacks of the GGA method, could provide satisfying results regarding the acid properties of HSAPO-34.

Electrochemical Modification of Polypeptides at Selenocysteine

Mild strategies for the selective modification of peptides and proteins are in demand for applications in therapeutic peptide and protein discovery, and in the study of fundamental biomolecular processes. Herein, we describe the development of an electrochemical selenoetherification (e-SE) platform for the efficient site-selective functionalization of polypeptides. This methodology utilizes the unique reactivity of the 21st amino acid, selenocysteine, to effect formation of valuable bioconjugates through stable selenoether linkages under mild electrochemical conditions. The power of e-SE is highlighted through late-stage C-terminal modification of the FDA-approved cancer drug leuprolide and assembly of a library of anti-HER2 affibody conjugates bearing complex cargoes. Following assembly by e-SE, the utility of functionalized affibodies for in vitro imaging and targeting of HER2 positive breast and lung cancer cell lines is also demonstrated.

Molecular Engineering of Rylene Diimides via Sila-Annulation Toward High-Mobility Organic Semiconductors

The continuous innovation of captivating new organic semiconducting materials remains pivotal in the development of high-performance organic electronic devices. Herein, a molecular engineering by combining sila-annulation with the vertical extension of rylene diimides (RDIs) toward high-mobility organic semiconductors is presented. The unilateral and bilateral sila-annulated quaterrylene diimides (Si-QDI and 2Si-QDI) are designed and synthesized. In particular, the symmetrical bilateral 2Si-QDI exhibits a compact, 1D slipped π-π stacking arrangement through the synergistic combination of a sizable π-conjugated core and intercalating alkyl chains. Combining the appreciable elevated HOMO levels and reduced energy gaps, the single-crystalline organic field-effect transistors (SC-OFETs) based on 2Si-QDI demonstrate exceptional ambipolar transport characteristics with an impressive hole mobility of 3.0 cm2 V-1 s-1 and an electron mobility of 0.03 cm2 V-1 s-1 , representing the best ampibolar SC-OFETs based on RDIs. Detailed theoretical calculations rationalize that the larger transfer integral along the π-π stacking direction is responsible for the achievement of the superior charge transport. This study showcases the remarkable potential of sila-annulation in optimizing carrier transport performances of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Acid Gas Capture by Nitrogen Heterocycle Ring Expansion

Acid gases including CO2, OCS, CS2, and SO2 are emitted by industrial processes such as natural gas production or power plants, leading to the formation of acid rain and contributing to global warming as greenhouse gases. An important technological challenge is to capture acid gases and transform them into useful products. The capture of CO2, CS2, SO2, and OCS by ring expansion of saturated and unsaturated substituted nitrogen-strained ring heterocycles was computationally investigated at the G3(MP2) level. The effects of fluorine, methyl, and phenyl substituents on N and/or C were explored. The reactions for the capture CO2, CS2, SO2, and OCS by 3- and 4-membered N-heterocycles are exothermic, whereas ring expansion reactions with 5-membered rings are thermodynamically unfavorable. Incorporation of an OCS into the ring leads to the amide product being thermodynamically favored over the thioamide. CS2 and OCS capture reactions are more exothermic and exergonic than the corresponding CO2 and SO2 capture reactions due to bond dissociation enthalpy differences. Selected reaction energy barriers were calculated and correlated with the reaction thermodynamics for a given acid gas. The barriers are highest for CO2 and OCS and lowest for CS2 and SO2. The ability of a ring to participate in acid gas capture via ring expansion is correlated to ring strain energy but is not wholly dependent upon it. The expanded N-heterocycles produced by acid gas capture should be polymerizable, allowing for upcycling of these materials.

Theoretical prediction of superatom WSi12-based catalysts for CO oxidation by N2O

Catalytic conversion of N2O and CO into nonharmful gases is of great significance to reduce their adverse impact on the environment. The potential of the WSi12 superatom to serve as a new cluster catalyst for CO oxidation by N2O is examined for the first time. It is found that WSi12 prefers to adsorb the N2O molecule rather than the CO molecule, and the charge transfer from WSi12 to N2O results in the full activation of N2O into a physically absorbed N2 molecule and an activated oxygen atom that is attached to an edge of the hexagonal prism structure of WSi12. After the release of N2, the remaining oxygen atom can oxidize one CO molecule via overcoming a rate-limiting barrier of 28.19 kcal mol-1. By replacing the central W atom with Cr and Mo, the resulting MSi12 (M = Cr and Mo) superatoms exhibit catalytic performance for CO oxidation comparable to the parent WSi12. In particular, the catalytic ability of WSi12 for CO oxidation is well maintained when it is extended into tube-like WnSi6(n+1) (n = 2, 4, and 6) clusters with energy barriers of 25.63-29.50 kcal mol-1. Moreover, all these studied MSi12 (M = Cr, Mo, and W) and WnSi6(n+1) (n = 2, 4, and 6) species have high structural stability and can absorb sunlight to drive the catalytic process. This study not only opens a new door for the atomically precise design of new silicon-based nanoscale catalysts for various chemical reactions but also provides useful atomic-scale insights into the size effect of such catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Two-dimensional III-nitride alloys: electronic and chemical properties of monolayer Ga(1-x)AlxN

Potential applications of III-nitrides have led to their monolayer allotropes, i.e., two-dimensional (2D) III-nitrides, having attracted much attention. Recently, alloying has been demonstrated as an effective method to control the properties of 2D materials. In this study, the stability, and the electronic and chemical properties of monolayer Ga(1-x)AlxN alloys were investigated employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the cluster expansion (CE) method. The results show that 2D Ga(1-x)AlxN alloys are thermodynamically stable and complete miscibility in the alloys can be achieved at ambient temperature (>85 K). By analyzing CE results, the atomic arrangement of 2D Ga(1-x)AlxN was revealed, showing that Ga/Al atoms tend to mix with the Al/Ga atoms in their next nearest site. The band gaps of Ga(1-x)AlxN random alloys can be tuned by varying the chemical composition, and the corresponding bowing parameter was calculated as -0.17 eV. Biaxial tensile strain was also found to change the band gap values of Ga(1-x)AlxN random alloys ascribed to its modifications to the CBM positions. The chemical properties of Ga(1-x)AlxN can also be significantly altered by strain, making them good candidates as photocatalysts for water splitting. The present study can play a crucial role in designing and optimizing 2D III-nitrides for next-generation electronics and photocatalysis.

Defective oxygen inert phase stabilized high-voltage nickel-rich cathode for high-energy lithium-ion batteries

Pushing layered cathode to higher operating voltage can facilitate the realization of high-energy lithium-ion batteries. However, the released oxygen species initiate materials surface upon highly delithiated states will react severely with electrolyte, accelerating the structure deterioration and triggering the thermal degradation. Here we propose an inert phase of La2Mo2O9 with abundant oxygen vacancies (about 41%) by regulating the annealing temperature to engineer the cathode interface beyond conventional modifications. By employing LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 as a model system and extending to higher voltage-operated LiCoO2 and Li-rich cathode, we demonstrate that the introduced lanthanum and molybdenum ions will transfer electrons to enhance the surface oxygen electronegativities, thus served as "oxygen anchor" to alleviate oxygen evolution. Furthermore, the possible released oxygen can be operando captured and reserved by β-phase La2Mo2O9 depositor for the intrinsic high oxygen vacancy formation energy. The reaction involving oxygen species with electrolyte is fundamentally diminished, thus effectively mitigate the structure deterioration and elevate the electrochemical performances, enabling a 1.5-Ah pouch-type full cell to exhibit negligible 6.0% capacity loss after 400 cycles.

Design and Construction of Carbon-Coated Fe3 O4 /Cr2 O3 Heterostructures Nanoparticles as High-Performance Anodes for Lithium Storage

Transition metal oxides, highly motivated anodes for lithium-ion batteries due to high theoretical capacity, typically afflict by inferior conductivity and significant volume variation. Architecting heterogeneous structures with distinctive interfacial features can effectively regulate the electronic structure to favor electrochemical properties. Herein, an engineered carbon-coated nanosized Fe3 O4 /Cr2 O3 heterostructure with multiple interfaces is synthesized by a facile sol-gel method and subsequent heat treatment. Such ingenious components and structural design deliver rapid Li+ migration and facilitate charge transfer at the heterogeneous interface. Simultaneously, the strong coupling synergistic interactions between Fe3 O4 , Cr2 O3 , and carbon layers establish multiple interface structures and built-in electric fields, which accelerate ion/electron transport and effectively eliminate volume expansion. As a result, the multi-interface heterostructure, as a lithium-ion battery anode, exhibits superior cycling stability maintaining a reversible capacity of 651.2 mAh g-1 for 600 cycles at 2 C. The density functionaltheory calculations not only unravel the electronic structure of the modulation but also illustrate favorable lithium-ion adsorption kinetics. This multi-interface heterostructure strategy offers a pathway for the development of advanced alkali metal-ion batteries.

Revealing the construction of CuOCe interfacial sites via increased support utilization for enhanced CO2 electroreduction and Li-CO2 batteries

Leveraging designed electronic oxide-metal interactions (EOMI), cerium-supported copper demonstrates remarkable competitiveness in the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). Nevertheless, the limited utilization efficiency of conventional cerium oxide (CeO2) support hampers the EOMI effect. Furthermore, a comprehensive understanding of the influence of distinct crystalline surfaces of CeO2 on the loaded active copper (Cu) species remains elusive. Herein, oxide carriers with diverse crystal facets are acquire for loading to load Cu species through the incorporation of cerium-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) precursors. Simultaneously, owing to the elevated specific surface area conferred by MOF precursors, Cu/CeO2 hosts ample catalytically active sites for carbon dioxide (CO2) electrocatalytic reactions and as catalytic cathodes for lithium-CO2 (Li-CO2) batteries. Furthermore, the carbon converted from organic ligands in MOFs precursors not only proficiently immobilizes and disperses the active sites, but also enhances the inherent conductive stability of the oxide while augmenting energy utilization efficiency. Leveraging these advantages, the electrocatalyst derived from MOFs achieves a peak CO2-to-methane Faradaic efficiency of 57.9 %, whereas the assembled Li-CO2 batteries exhibit notable activity and durability, boasting a substantial full-discharge capacity of 8907 mAh/g, a discharge voltage of 2.65 V, and an extended cycle life exceeding 1000 h. Mechanistic investigations were conducted using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to thoroughly explore the impact of CeO2 carrier crystal facets, specifically (111), (100), and (110), on the loaded copper species. Notably, (110) was identified as the optimal facet due to its favorable contributions to electronic structure optimization and stability enhancement.

The electrocatalytic N2 reduction activity of core-shell iron nanoalloy catalysts: a density functional theory (DFT) study

A molecular level understanding of the property evolution in binary nanoalloy catalysts is crucial for designing novel electrocatalysts for ammonia synthesis. In this regard, designing core-shell catalyst structures has been a versatile approach to achieve the product selectivity. Herein, we investigated the activity evolution of Fe-based core-shell (M15@Fe50) (M = Co, Ni, or Cu) clusters for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Nitrogen reduction following the associative mechanistic pathway is significantly activated over the Cu15@Fe50 cluster. The d-band center from the electronic structure analysis is found to be upshifted, justifying the activity towards the NRR. The reduction reaction occurs via the surface restructuring of the catalyst, in which the *NH2 formation is found to be the lowest endergonic potential determining step compared to pristine Fe(110). Based on this, the high NRR activity of the Cu15@Fe50 cluster has been proposed, which, we envision, will provide useful insights into the position and compositional effects of core-shell structures for the discovery of efficient NRR electrocatalysts.

Solvation Sheath Engineering by Multivalent Cations Enabling Multifunctional SEI for Fast-Charging Lithium-Metal Batteries

With the pursuit of high energy and power density, the fast-charging capability of lithium-metal batteries has progressively been the primary focus of attention. To prevent the formation of lithium dendrites during fast charging, the ideal solid electrolyte interphase should be capable of concurrent fast Li+ transport and uniform nucleation sites; however, its construction in a facile manner remains a challenge. Here, as Al3+ has a higher charge and Al metal is lithiophilic, we tuned the Li+ solvation structure by introducing LiNO3 and aluminum ethoxide together, resulting in the dissolution of LiNO3 and the simultaneous generation of fast ionic conductor and lithiophilic sites. Consequently, our approach facilitated the deposition of lithium metal in a uniform and chunky way, even at a high current density. As a result, the Coulombic efficiency of the Li||Cu cell increased to over 99%. Moreover, the Li||LiFePO4 full cell demonstrated significantly enhanced cycling performance with a remarkable capacity retention of 94.5% at 4 C, far superior to the 46.1% capacity retention observed with the base electrolyte.

Synergistic modulation of electrical and thermal transport toward promising n-type MgOCuSbSe2 thermoelectric performance by MO-intercalated CuSbSe2

The layered ternary CuSbSe2 semiconductor with ultralow thermal conductivity is particularly suitable for thermoelectric applications. Nevertheless, its poor electrical conductivity greatly lowers the dimensionless figure of merit ZT and accordingly limits its thermoelectric applications. Here, we use first-principles calculations combined with semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory to evaluate the thermoelectric properties of MO-intercalated (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) CuSbSe2. Compared with CuSbSe2, MO-intercalated CuSbSe2 semiconductors, as a new class of semiconductors, host distorted lattices with low symmetry monoclinic structures. Such a structure feature provides desired channels for electron transport between adjacent layers and accordingly enhances electrical transport properties. Meanwhile, the MO intercalation effectively softens phonons and gives rise to an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in MOCuSbSe2. These synergistically yield a high figure of merit ZT of ∼4.17 for MgO-intercalated CuSbSe2 at 200 K with electron doping being n = 1018 cm-3. Our study provides an effective route to improve the thermoelectric performance of layered CuSbSe2 by designing new multicomponent thermoelectric compounds with alternatively stacked [CuSbSe2] (electronic conduction units) and [MO] (electronic insulation units) layers. The approach can be extended to similar chalcostibite compounds for screening and designing thermoelectric materials.

A High-Energy Four-Electron Zinc Battery Enabled by Evoking Full Electrochemical Activity in Copper Sulfide Electrode

The growing global demand for sustainable and cost-effective energy storage solutions has driven the rapid development of zinc batteries. Despite significant progress in recent years, enhancing the energy density of zinc batteries remains a crucial research focus. One prevalent strategy involves the development of high-capacity and/or high-voltage cathode materials. CuS, a commonly used electrode material, exhibits a two-electron transfer mechanism; however, the reduced sulfion lacks electrochemical activity and thereby limits its discharge capacity and redox potential. In this study, we activate a CuS cathode to form a high-valence Cu2+&S compound using a deep-eutectic-solvent (DES)-based electrolyte. The presence of Cl- in the DES-based electrolyte is crucial to the reversibility of the redox chemistry, and the liquid-phase-involved electrochemical process facilitates redox kinetics. A four-electron transfer pathway involving five reaction steps is identified for the CuS electrode, which unleashes the full electrochemical activity of the S element. Consequently, the full cell delivers a large discharge capacity of ∼800 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 and yields a high discharge plateau starting at 1.58 V, contributing to energy densities of up to 650 Wh kg-1 (based on CuS). This work offers a promising approach to developing high-energy zinc batteries.

Basis Set Limit of CCSD(T) Energies: Explicit Correlation Versus Density-Based Basis-Set Correction

A thorough comparison is carried out for explicitly correlated and density-based basis-set correction approaches, which were primarily developed to mitigate the basis-set incompleteness error of wave function methods. An efficient implementation of the density-based scheme is also presented, utilizing the density-fitting approximation. The performance of these approaches is comprehensively tested for the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2), coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD), and CCSD with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] methods with respect to the corresponding complete basis set references. It is demonstrated that the density-based correction together with complementary auxiliary basis set (CABS)-corrected Hartree-Fock energies is highly robust and effectively reduces the error of the standard approaches; however, it does not outperform the corresponding explicitly correlated methods. Nevertheless, what still makes the density-corrected CCSD and CCSD(T) methods competitive is that their computational costs are roughly half of those of the corresponding explicitly correlated variants. Additionally, an incremental approach for standard CCSD and CCSD(T) is introduced. In this simple scheme, the total energies are corrected with the CABS correction and explicitly correlated MP2 contributions. As demonstrated, the resulting methods yield surprisingly good results, below 1 kcal/mol for thermochemical properties even with a double-ζ basis, while their computational expenses are practically identical to those of the density-based basis-set correction approaches.

Structures, cold pressure lines, and electronic properties of cubic Al2O and AlO: First-principles calculations

Aluminized explosive has attracted more and more attention in recent years because of its high explosive heat and high power. Al2O and AlO are indispensable aluminum oxides in the explosion process of aluminized explosives. The study of the physical properties of solid Al2O and AlO under pressure may play an important role in the understanding of the explosion mechanism of aluminized explosives. CONTEXT: The structures, cold-pressed lines and electronic properties of cubic Al2O and AlO are calculated and analyzed based on first-principles calculation in this paper. The optimized structures of Al2O and AlO are in good agreement with those previously studied. The cold pressure line shows that the specific volumes of Al2O and AlO decrease with increasing pressure. The peak values and peak positions of density of state of Al2O and AlO change greatly under pressure. METHODS: The CASTEP code was used to execute these calculations throughout the present work, where the plane-wave basis set and norm conserving pseudopotential were employed.

Copper monatomic wire supported on graphene nanoribbons as an electrocatalyst for nitric oxide reduction: pre-adsorption mechanism of reactant

CONTEXT

This work theoretically demonstrates a catalyst of copper monatomic wire supported on graphene nanoribbons (Cu-GNR) with a high efficiency for nitric oxide electroreduction reaction (NORR). This not only decreases the usage rate of noble metals but also possesses superior limiting potential comparable to pure Cu (- 0.69 and - 0.61 V, vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). The key is that Cu-GNR will have more efficient catalytic activity for NORR when fully covered by NO, since these weaken the adsorption ability of the reduction steps at the beginning. In sum, our findings may offer a platform for clarifying the effects of the concentration of reactants on catalytic process.

METHODS

Spin-polarized DFT with ultrasoft pseudopotentials as implemented in the CASTEP code was used in this work. The exchange correlation effects were described by generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. The dispersion correction within Grimme scheme (DFT-D2) was employed to accurately describe the van der Waals (vdW) interactions. The Hirshfeld population analysis was adopted to evaluate the charge transfer.

Comparing Density Functional Theory Metal-Ligand Bond Dissociation Enthalpies with Experimental Solution-Phase Enthalpies of Activation for Bond Dissociation

The predictive ability of density functional theory is fundamental to its usefulness in chemical applications. Recent work has compared solution-phase enthalpies of activation for metal-ligand bond dissociation to enthalpies of reaction for bond dissociation, and the present work continues those comparisons for 43 density functional methods. The results for ligand dissociation enthalpies of 30 metal-ligand complexes tested in this work reveal significant inadequacies of some functionals as well as challenges from the dispersion corrections to some functionals. The analysis presented here demonstrates the excellent performance of a recent density functional, M11plus, which contains nonlocal rung-3.5 correlation. We also find a good agreement between theory and experiment for some functionals without empirical dispersion corrections such as M06, r2SCAN, M06-L, and revM11, as well as good performance for some functionals with added dispersion corrections such as ωB97X-D (which always has a correction) and BLYP, B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, and PBE0 when the optional dispersion corrections are added.

Structure and dynamics of the Li+ ion in water, methanol and acetonitrile solvents: ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Fundamental understanding of the structure and dynamics of the Li+ ion in solution is of utmost importance in different fields of science and technology, especially in the field of ion batteries. In view of this, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the LiCl salt in water, methanol and acetonitrile were performed to elucidate structural parameters such as radial distribution function and coordination number, and dynamical properties like diffusion coefficient, limiting ion conductivity and hydrogen bond correlation function. In the present AIMD simulation, one LiCl in water is equivalent to 0.8 M, which is close to the concentration of the lithium salt used in the Li-ion battery. The first sphere of coordination number of the Li+ ion was reaffirmed to be 4. The radial distribution function for different pairs of atoms is seen to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The calculated potential of mean force indicates the stronger interaction of the Li+ ion with methanol over water followed by acetonitrile. The dynamical parameters convey quite high diffusion and limiting ionic conductivity of the Li+ ion in acetonitrile compared to that in water and methanol which has been attributed to the transport of the Li-Cl ion pair in a non-dissociated form in acetonitrile. The AIMD results were found to be in accordance with the experimental findings, i.e. the limiting ion conductivity was found to follow the order acetonitrile > methanol > water. This study shows the importance of atomistic level simulations in evaluating the structural and dynamical parameters and in implementing the results for predicting and synthesizing better next generation solvents for lithium ion batteries (LIBs).

Azadiradione, a Component of Neem Oil, Behaves as a Superoxide Dismutase Mimic When Scavenging the Superoxide Radical, as Shown Using DFT and Hydrodynamic Voltammetry

The neem tree, Azadirachta indica, belongs to the Meliaceae family, and its use in the treatment of medical disorders from ancient times to the present in the traditional medical practices of Asia, Africa and the Middle East is well-documented. Neem oil, extracted from the seeds of the fruit, is widely used, with promising medicinal benefits. Azadiradione, a principal antioxidant component of the seeds of A. indica, is known to reduce oxidative stress and has anti-inflammatory effects. To directly measure the antioxidant ability of neem oil, we used Rotating Ring Disk Electrode (RRDE) hydrodynamic voltammetry to quantify how it can scavenge superoxide radical anions. The results of these experiments show that neem oil is approximately 26 times stronger than other natural products, such as olive oil, propolis and black seed oil, which were previously measured using this method. Next, computational Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods were used to arrive at a mechanism for the scavenging of superoxide radical anions with azadiradione. Our work indicates that azadiradione is an effective antioxidant and, according to our DFT study, its scavenging of the superoxide radical anion occurs through a reaction mechanism in which azadiradione mimics the antioxidant action of superoxide dismutase (SOD). In this mechanism, analogous to the SOD enzymatic reaction, azadiradione is regenerated, along with the production of two products: hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen. This antioxidant process provides an explanation for azadiradione's more general and protective biochemical effects.

Ab Initio Phase Diagram of Gold in Extreme Conditions

A phase diagram of gold is proposed in the [0; 1000] GPa and [0; 10 000] K ranges of pressure and temperature, respectively, topologically modified with respect to previous predictions. Using finite-temperature ab initio simulations and nonequilibirum thermodynamic integration, both accelerated by machine learning, we evaluate the Gibbs free energies of three solid phases previously proposed. At room temperature, the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase is stable up to ∼500  GPa whereas the body-centered cubic (bcc) phase only appears above 1 TPa. At higher temperature, we do not highlight any fcc-bcc transition line between 200 and 400 GPa, in agreement with ramp-compressed experiments. The present results only disclose a bcc domain around 140-235 GPa and 6000-8000 K, consistent with the triple point recently found in shock experiments. We demonstrate that this re-stabilization of the bcc phase at high temperature is due to anharmonic effects.

On The Nature of FeIV =Oaq in Aqueous Media: A DFT analysis

FeIV =Oaq is a key intermediate in many advanced oxidation processes and probably in biological systems. It is usually referred to as FeIV =O2+ . The pKa's of FeIV =Oaq as derived by DFT are: pKa1=2.37 M06 L/6-311++G(d,p) (SDD for Fe) and pKa2=7.79 M06 L/6-311++G(d,p) (SDD for Fe). This means that in neutral solutions, FeIV =Oaq is a mixture of (H2 O)4 (OH)FeIV =O+ and (H2 O)2 (OH)2 FeIV =O. The oxidation potential of FeIV =Oaq in an acidic solution, E0 {(H2 O)5 FeIV =O2+ /FeIII (H2 O)6 3+ , pH 0.0} is calculated with and without a second solvation sphere and the recommended value is between 2.86 V (B3LYP/Def2-TZVP, with a second solvation sphere) and 2.23 V (M06 L/Def2-TZVP without a second solvation sphere). This means that FeIV =Oaq is the strongest oxidizing agent formed in systems involving FeVI O4 2- even in neutral media.

A covalency-aided electrochemical mechanism for CO2 reduction: the synergistic effect of copper and boron dual active sites drives the formation of a high-efficiency ethanol product

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion into high-value multi-carbon products is of great significance for CO2 utilization, but the chemical inertness, low yields, and poor product selectivity hinder the application prospects of the electrocatalytic conversion methods. In this work, a covalency-aided electrochemical mechanism for CO2 reduction is proposed for the first time by embedding the nonmetallic element boron (B) on copper surfaces, in which p-block dopants have a significant impact on modifying the adsorbent intermediates and improving the catalytic activity. Herein, B atoms not only provide empty and occupied orbitals to adsorb and activate CO, but also afford a large amount of charge to stabilize the C2 intermediates. In addition, B atoms can also adjust the oxidation state of nearby copper (namely, Cu+), and the synergistic Cu+ and B dual active sites act as O* adsorption and C* adsorption sites, respectively, leading to strong adsorption and activation of CO2. First-principles calculations reveal that CO2 can be reduced into C2H5OH with an ultralow potential of -0.26 V. Overall, this study provides new insights into CO2 reduction, which offers a promising way for achieving an efficient ethanol product.

Metal-organic frameworks-derived MCo2O4 (M = Zn, Ni, Cu) two-dimensional nanosheets as anodes materials to boost lithium storage

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) have received significant consideration. Because of their enormous theoretical capacity, cheap, and less toxicity. Notably, cobalt-based materials hold promises as negative electrode materials for batteries, but they suffer from less electrical conductivity and significant volume changes during operation. In order to address these challenges, sacrificial templating techniques at the nanoscale offer a potential solution for improving the electrochemical stability and rate performance of these materials. More specifically, these tactics have proven popular for designing Li-ion storages. To ascertain the impact of multiple metal ions on the electrochemical capacity, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) derived MCo2O4-MOF (M = Zn, Ni, Cu) were developed. Among these, ZnCo2O4 showed the best electrochemical performance (927.2 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 250 cycles). Furthermore, calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) revealed that ZnCo2O4 had the lowest Li+ adsorption energy, with a minimum value of -1.61 eV. Moreover, this research aims to design controllable nanostructures in order to enhance the design of transition bimetallic oxide composites for energy storage applications.

The novel π-d conjugated TM2B3N3S6 (TM = Mo, Ti and W) monolayers as highly active single-atom catalysts for electrocatalytic synthesis of ammonia

Recently, single-atom catalysts (SACs) are receiving significant attention in electrocatalysis fields due to their excellent specific activities and extremely high atomic utilization ratio. Effective loading of metal atoms and high stability of SACs increase the number of exposed active sites, thus significantly improving their catalytic efficiency. Herein, we proposed a series (29 in total) of two-dimensional (2D) conjugated structures of TM2B3N3S6 (TM means those 3d to 5d transition metals) and studied the performance as single-atom catalysts for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) using density functional theory (DFT). Results show that TM2B3N3S6 (TM = Mo, Ti and W) monolayers have superior performance for ammonia synthesis with low limiting potentials of -0.38, -0.53 and -0.68 V, respectively. Among them, the Mo2B3N3S6 monolayer shows the best catalytic performance of NRR. Meanwhile, the π conjugated B3N3S6 rings undergo coordinated electron transfer with the d orbitals of TM to exhibit good chargeability, and these TM2B3N3S6 monolayers activate isolated N2 according to the "acceptance-donation" mechanism. We have also verified the good stability (i.e., Ef < 0, and Udiss > 0) and high selectivity (Ud = -0.03, 0.01 and 0.10 V, respectively) of the above four types of monolayers for NRR over hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The NRR activities have been clarified by multiple-level descriptors (ΔG*N2H, ICOHP, and Ɛd) in the terms of basic characteristics, electronic property, and energy. Moreover, the aqueous solution can promote the NRR process, leading to the reduction of ΔGPDS from 0.38 eV to 0.27 eV for the Mo2B3N3S6 monolayer. However, the TM2B3N3S6 (TM = Mo, Ti and W) also showed excellent stability in aqueous phase. This study proves that the π-d conjugated monolayers of TM2B3N3S6 (TM = Mo, Ti and W) as electrocatalysts show great potentials for the nitrogen reduction.

Doubly Tuned Exchange-Correlation Functionals for Mixed-Reference Spin-Flip Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

It is demonstrated that significant accuracy improvements in MRSF-TDDFT can be achieved by introducing two different exchange-correlation (XC) functionals for the reference Kohn-Sham DFT and the response part of the calculations, respectively. Accordingly, two new XC functionals of doubly tuned Coulomb attenuated method-vertical excitation energy (DTCAM-VEE) and DTCAM-AEE were developed on the basis of the "adaptive exact exchange (AEE)" concept in the framework of the Coulomb-attenuating XC functionals. The values by DTCAM-VEE are in excellent agreement with those of Thiel's set [mean absolute errors (MAEs) and the interquartile range (IQR) values of 0.218 and 0.327 eV, respectively]. On the other hand, DTCAM-AEE faithfully reproduced the qualitative aspects of conical intersections (CIs) of trans-butadiene and thymine and the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations on thymine. The latter functional also remarkably exhibited the exact 1/R asymptotic behavior of the charge-transfer state of an ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene dimer and the accurate potential energy surfaces (PESs) along the two torsional angles of retinal protonated Schiff base model with six double bonds (rPSB6). Overall, DTCAM-AEE generally performs well, as its MAE (0.237) and IQR (0.41 eV) are much improved as compared to BH&HLYP. The current idea can also be applied to other XC functionals as well as other variants of linear response theories, opening a new way of developing XC functionals.

N-Coordinated tellurenium(II) and telluronium(IV) cations: synthesis, structure and hydrolysis

A set of N-coordinated tellurium(II) compounds containing either C,N-chelating ligands CNR (where CN = 2-(RNCH)C6H4, R = tBu or Dipp; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) or N,C,N pincer ligands NCNR (where NCN = 2,6-(RNCH)2C6H4, R = tBu or Dipp) were synthesized. In the case of C,N-chelated compounds, the reaction of CNDippLi with Te(dtc)2 (where dtc = Et2NCS2) in a 1 : 1 molar ratio smoothly provided the carbamate CNDippTe(dtc) which upon treatment with 2 eq. of HCl provided the chloride CNDippTeCl. In contrast, the analogous conversion of NCNRLi with Te(dtc)2 surprisingly furnished ionic bromides [NCNRTe]Br as a result of the exchange of dtc by Br coming from nBuBr present in the reaction mixture. Furthermore, the reaction of CNDippTeCl or [NCNRTe]Br with silver salts AgX (X = OTf or SbF6) provided the expected tellurenium cations [CNDippTe]SbF6 and [NCNRTe]X. To further increase the Lewis acidity of the central atom, the oxidation of selected compounds with 1 eq. of SO2Cl2 was examined yielding stable compounds [CNtBuTeCl2]X and [NCNtBuTeCl2]X. The oxidation of the Dipp substituted compounds proved to be more challenging and an excess of SO2Cl2 was necessary to obtain the oxidized products [CNDippTeCl2]SbF6 and [NCNDippTeCl2]SbF6, which could solely be characterized in solution. Compounds [CNtBuTeCl2]OTf and [NCNtBuTeCl2]OTf were shown to undergo a controlled hydrolysis to the corresponding telluroxanes. All compounds were studied by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy in solution and for selected compounds solid state 125Te NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis were performed. The Lewis acidity of the studied cations was examined by the Gutmann-Beckett method using Et3PO as the probing agent. The Te-N chalcogen bonding situation of selected compounds has also been examined computationally by a set of real-space bonding indicators.

Computational Design of Ni6@Pt1M31 Clusters for Multifunctional Electrocatalysts

High-efficiency and low-cost multifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HERs), oxygen evolution reaction (OERs) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORRs) are important for the practical applications of regenerative fuel cells. The activity trends of core-shell Ni6@M32 and Ni6@Pt1M31 (M = Pt, Pd, Cu, Ag, Au) were investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). Rate constant calculations indicated that Ni6@Pt1Ag31 was an efficient HER catalyst. The Volmer-Tafel process was the kinetically favorable reaction pathway for Ni6@Pt1M31. The Volmer-Heyrovsky reaction mechanism was preferred for Ni6@M32. The Pt active site reduced the energy barrier and changed the reaction mechanism. The ORR and OER overpotentials of Ni6@Pt1Ag31 were calculated to be 0.12 and 0.33 V, indicating that Ni6@Pt1Ag31 could be a promising multifunctional electrocatalyst. Ni6@Pt1M31 core-shell clusters present abundant active sites with a moderate adsorption strength for *H, *O, *OH and *OOH. The present study shows that embedding a single Pt atom onto a Ni@M core-shell cluster is a rational strategy for designing an effective multifunctional electrocatalyst.

Diatomic iron nanozyme with lipoxidase-like activity for efficient inactivation of enveloped virus

Enveloped viruses encased within a lipid bilayer membrane are highly contagious and can cause many infectious diseases like influenza and COVID-19, thus calling for effective prevention and inactivation strategies. Here, we develop a diatomic iron nanozyme with lipoxidase-like (LOX-like) activity for the inactivation of enveloped virus. The diatomic iron sites can destruct the viral envelope via lipid peroxidation, thus displaying non-specific virucidal property. In contrast, natural LOX exhibits low antiviral performance, manifesting the advantage of nanozyme over the natural enzyme. Theoretical studies suggest that the Fe-O-Fe motif can match well the energy levels of Fe2 minority β-spin d orbitals and pentadiene moiety π* orbitals, and thus significantly lower the activation barrier of cis,cis-1,4-pentadiene moiety in the vesicle membrane. We showcase that the diatomic iron nanozyme can be incorporated into air purifier to disinfect airborne flu virus. The present strategy promises a future application in comprehensive biosecurity control.

High or Low Coordination: Insight into the Active Site of Pt Nanoparticles toward CO Oxidation

The catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles (NPs) is highly dependent on the coordination environment of the surface sites. Understanding the role of different sites in reactions is essential for gaining insights into catalytic activity and the precise design of catalysts. Herein, we used first-principles calculation-based kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate correlations between different sites on Pt NPs in CO oxidation reactions. Low-coordinated (LC) sites favor the CO adsorption and reaction, whereas the oxygen mainly adsorbs on high-coordinated (HC) sites and diffuses to LC sites for reaction at low temperatures. Compared with step-dominated and terrace-dominated structures, the step-terrace structures exhibit higher activities. This reveals that the catalytic performance is not simply determined by the sites where the reaction occurs but is dramatically affected by the kinetic synergies between different sites. A proper way to optimize the activity of Pt catalysts is to balance the LC and HC sites.

Illuminating milling mechanochemistry by tandem real-time fluorescence emission and Raman spectroscopy monitoring

In pursuit of accessible and interpretable methods for direct and real-time observation of mechanochemical reactions, we demonstrate a tandem spectroscopic method for monitoring of ball-milling transformations combining fluorescence emission and Raman spectroscopy, accompanied by high-level molecular and periodic density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, including periodic time-dependent (TD-DFT) modelling of solid-state fluorescence spectra. This proof-of-principle report presents this readily accessible dual-spectroscopy technique as capable of observing changes to the supramolecular structure of the model pharmaceutical system indometacin during mechanochemical polymorph transformation and cocrystallisation. The observed time-resolved in situ spectroscopic and kinetic data are supported by ex situ X-ray diffraction and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements. The application of first principles (ab initio) calculations enabled the elucidation of how changes in crystalline environment, that result from mechanochemical reactions, affect vibrational and electronic excited states of molecules. The herein explored interpretation of both real-time and ex situ spectroscopic data through ab initio calculations provides an entry into developing a detailed mechanistic understanding of mechanochemical milling processes and highlights the challenges of using real-time spectroscopy.

Probing site-selective doping and charge compensating defects in KMgF3: insights from a hybrid DFT study

Design of optoelectronic materials with tunable properties using activators and defect clusters has become one of the prime interests of current research. In this study, detailed Density Functional Theory based calculations have been presented to investigate the geometries and electronic structures of various possible defect clusters using Eu-KMgF3 as a probe which has numerous technological and industrial applications. Using a more reliable hybrid density functional, we have calculated defect formation energies and thermodynamic transition levels to get knowledge about the site selectivity of Eu. It has been observed that the electronic structure of Eu-KMgF3 is not only dependent on the site of doping but also on the oxidation state of Eu (2+/3+). The present study also investigates the relative stability of different kinds of defects and defect clusters under various synthetic growth conditions. The ultimate aim is to find out the microscopic origin of the fundamental optical properties of Eu-KMgF3 and provide an unambiguous explanation of available experimental results. Thus, it has been revealed that doping with Eu results in the spontaneous formation of intrinsic defects, which contribute to the observed optical behaviour. We have also extended our study to investigate the role of codoping with Li in determining the geometry and electronic structure of Eu-KMgF3 aiming to explain its impact on the optical properties. Thus, a complete presentation of the influence of the activator in the absence and presence of lattice defects on the optical properties of KMgF3 has been accomplished in the current study. We strongly believe that the present study will be helpful in designing tunable phosphor materials by a defect-controlled synthesis strategy.

Tuning the morphology, stability and optical properties of CsSnBr3 nanocrystals through bismuth doping for visible-light-driven applications

In this investigation, we have demonstrated the synthesis of lead-free CsSnBr3 (CSB) and 5 mol% bismuth (Bi) doped CSB (CSB'B) nanocrystals, with a stable cubic perovskite structure following a facile hot injection technique. The Bi substitution in CSB was found to play a vital role in reducing the size of the nanocrystals significantly, from 316 ± 93 to 87 ± 22 nm. Additionally, Bi doping has inhibited the oxidation of Sn2+ of CSB perovskite. A reduction in the optical band gap from 1.89 to 1.73 eV was observed for CSB'B and the PL intensity was quenched due to the introduction of the Bi3+ dopant. To demonstrate one of the visible-light-driven applications of the nanocrystals, photodegradation experiments were carried out as a test case. Interestingly, under UV-vis irradiation, the degradation efficiency of CSB'B was roughly one order lower than that of P25 titania nanoparticles; however, it was almost five times higher when driven by visible light under identical conditions. The water stability of CSB'B perovskite and suppression of the oxidative degradation of Sn were confirmed through XRD and XPS analyses after photocatalysis. Moreover, by employing experimental parameters, DFT-based first-principles calculations were performed, which demonstrated an excellent qualitative agreement between experimental and theoretical outcomes. The as-synthesized Bi-doped CSB might be a stable halide perovskite with potential in visible-light-driven applications.

Growth pattern and electronic and magnetic properties of Cr-doped silver clusters

Growth pattern and electronic and magnetic properties of Agn Cr (n = 1-16) clusters have been investigated via density functional theory (DFT) combined with CALYPSO structure search method. The optimized geometry shows that the growth of the global minimum structures of Agn Cr clusters have obvious rule. when n > 12, silver atoms grow around an icosahedron which is almost unchanged in each structure. Analyses of electronic properties indicate that the doped Cr atom can only enhance the stability of larger silver clusters. Optical absorption and photoelectron spectra of Agn Cr isomers have been predicted and can be used for their structural identification. The icosahedral Ag12 Cr cluster with large energy level gap can be seen as a superatom. The adsorption capacity of Cr atom in Agn Cr cluster to CO is much higher than that of free Cr atom. The intensity of IR and Ramam spectra can be dramatically enhanced when CO is absorbed on Agn Cr cluster that Cr atom is encapsulated by Ag atoms. Moreover, the red shift of IR and Raman spectra of CO adsorbed on these clusters is also very small compared to free CO. Magnetism calculations show that the magnetic moment of Agn Cr clusters decreases linearly from n = 6 to 12 and increases linearly from n = 12 to 16. The total magnetic moment of Agn Cr cluster is mainly localized on the Cr atom. The change of magnetic moment of Cr atom is related to the charge transfer between Cr and Ag atoms.

Activity of Different AunSn+1 Staples in the Ligand Exchange of Au23(SR)16- with a Single Foreign Thiolate Ligand

Ligand exchange has been widely used to synthesize novel thiolated gold nanoclusters and to regulate their specific properties. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to investigate the kinetic profiles of the ligand exchange of the [Au23(SCy)16]- nanocluster with an aromatic thiolate (2-napthalenethiol). The three types of staple motifs (i.e., trimetallic Au3S4, monometallic AuS2, and the bridging thiolates) of the Au23 cluster precursor could be categorized into eight groups of S sites with different chemical environments. The ligand exchange of all of them occurs favorably via the SN1-like pathway, with one site starting with the Au-S dissociation and seven other sites starting with the H-transfer steps. By contrast, the SN2-like pathway (i.e., the synergistic SCy-to-SAr exchange prior to the H-transfer step) is unlikely in the target systems. Meanwhile, the Au-S bond on the capping Au atom of the bicapped icosahedral Au15 core is the most active one, while the S sites on Au3S4 (except for the one remote from the metallic core) are all competitive exchanging sites. The ligand exchange activity of the bridging thiolate and the remote S site on Au3S4 is significantly less reactive. The calculation results correlate with the multiple ligand exchange within only a few minutes and the preferential etching of the AuS2 staple with the foreign ligands reported in earlier experiments. The relative activity of different staples might be helpful in elucidating the inherent principles in the ligand exchange-induced size-evolution of metal nanoclusters.

Biological Evaluation of Anti-Cholinesterase Activity, in Silico Molecular Docking Studies, and DFT Calculations of Green Synthesized Thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine Derivatives

A series of [1,3,4] thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine-6-carboxylate derivatives 4(a-n) have been designed and synthesized as inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Synthesizing of thiadiazolo[3,2-a] pyrimidines was carried out in a single step, one-pot reaction using aromatic aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate and different derivatives of 1,3,4-thiadiazoles (with molar ratio of 1 : 2 : 1, respectively) in conjunction with the catalyst, anhydrous iron(III) chloride by a grinding method under solvent-free conditions at room temperature. The in-vitro studies exhibited good potency for inhibiting AChE comparable with donepezil as the reference drug. The best results were obtained by Ethyl 2-(4-nitroophenyl)-7-methyl-5-(pyridin-3-yl)-5H-[1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine-6-carboxylate 4n with IC50 value of 0.082±0.001 μM which was comparable with AChE inhibitory effects of donepezil (IC50 =0.079 μM).

Self-healing of fractured diamond

Materials that possess the ability to self-heal cracks at room temperature, akin to living organisms, are highly sought after. However, achieving crack self-healing in inorganic materials, particularly with covalent bonds, presents a great challenge and often necessitates high temperatures and considerable atomic diffusion. Here we conducted a quantitative evaluation of the room-temperature self-healing behaviour of a fractured nanotwinned diamond composite, revealing that the self-healing properties of the composite stem from both the formation of nanoscale diamond osteoblasts comprising sp2- and sp3-hybridized carbon atoms at the fractured surfaces, and the atomic interaction transition from repulsion to attraction when the two fractured surfaces come into close proximity. The self-healing process resulted in a remarkable recovery of approximately 34% in tensile strength for the nanotwinned diamond composite. This discovery sheds light on the self-healing capability of nanostructured diamond, offering valuable insights for future research endeavours aimed at enhancing the toughness and durability of brittle ceramic materials.

Effects of quantum size on the thermoelectric properties of bismuth

First principles and the Boltzmann transport equation have been combined to investigate the effects of quantum size L/λ, the ratio of quantum confinement length L to thermal de Broglie wavelength λ, on the thermoelectric properties of 2D β-bismuth. It is revealed that the thermoelectric properties of 2D β-bismuth are highly influenced by quantum size, especially when the L/λ is less than 0.1. Specifically, the Seebeck coefficients of both electrons and holes decrease as the L/λ ratio increases, while the electrical and thermal conductivity show the opposite trend. The results also show that 2D bismuth with three or more layers has semimetal properties, with the first observation of a semiconductor-semimetal transition in 2D bismuth. Moreover, the electron affinity, ionization energy, and work function of 2D β-bismuth do not exhibit a significant variation or trend with quantum size effects. The detailed electronic structures provide a fundamental understanding of the thermoelectric properties of bismuth, and the obtained results may provide a deep understanding of the relationship between the quantum size and the thermoelectric properties of 2D β-bismuth.

Synthesis of aromatic polynitroso compounds: Towards functional azodioxy-linked porous polymers

The polymerization property of aromatic polynitroso compounds could be used to create azodioxy porous networks with possible application for the adsorption of CO2, the main greenhouse gas. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of new aromatic polynitroso compounds, with para-nitroso groups attached to the triphenylbenzene, triphenylpyridine, triphenyltriazine and triphenylamine moiety. The synthesis of the pyridine-based trinitroso compound was performed by reduction of the corresponding trinitro derivative to N-arylhydroxylamine followed by oxidation to the trinitroso product. For the synthesis of the benzene- and triazine-based trinitroso compounds, a novel synthetic strategy was implemented, which included cyclotrimerization of the 4-nitrosoacetophenone and 4-nitrosobenzonitrile, respectively. Reduction of the trinitro compound with triphenylamine unit produced the dinitroso product. In a solid state, all synthesized compounds form E-azodioxy oligomers or polymers. While azodioxy polymer with triphenylbenzene moiety is an amorphous solid, other azodioxy oligomers and polymers displayed sharp diffraction peaks pointing to their crystalline nature. A computational study indicated that eclipsed AA configurations are preferred over staggered AB and inclined AA' configurations. The serrated layers may be the most likely outcome when/if 2D layers form an organized polymer network of azodioxy linked triphenyltriazine-based building blocks.

X-ray and UV Irradiation-Induced Reactive Oxygen Species Mediated Antibacterial Activity in Fe and Pt Nanoparticle-Decorated Si-Doped TiCaCON Films

Bone implants with biocompatibility and the ability to biomineralize and suppress infection are in high demand. The occurrence of early infections after implant placement often leads to repeated surgical treatment due to the ineffectiveness of antibiotic therapy. Therefore, an extremely attractive solution to this problem would be the ability to initiate bacterial protection of the implant by an external influence. Here, we present a proof-of-concept study based on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the implant surface in response to X-ray irradiation, including through a layer of 3 mm adipose tissue, providing bactericidal protection. The effect of UV and X-ray irradiation of the implant surface on the ROS formation and the associated bactericidal activity was compared. The focus of our study was light-sensitive Si-doped TiCaCON films decorated with Fe and Pt nanoparticles (NPs) with photoinduced antibacterial activity mediated by ROS. In the visible and infrared range of 300-1600 nm, the films absorb more than 60% of the incident light. The high light absorption capacity of TiO2/TiC and TiO2/TiN heterostructures was demonstrated by density functional theory calculations. After short-term (5-10 s) low-dose X-ray irradiation, the films generated significantly more ROS than after UV illumination for 1 h. The Fe/TiCaCON-Si films showed enhanced biomineralization capacity, superior cytocompatibility, and excellent antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant hospital Escherichia coli U20 and K261 strains and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MW2 strain. Our study clearly demonstrates that oxidized Fe NPs are a promising alternative to the widely used Ag NPs in antibacterial coatings, and X-rays can potentially be used in ROS-regulating therapy to suppress inflammation in case of postimplant complications.

Theoretical insights into the catalytic mechanism of propylene hydroformylation over Co-N-C materials

M-N-C was recently reported to be a high activity catalyst for hydroformylation compared with a metal nanocluster. However, the nature of M-N-C sites and the dominant path of propylene hydroformylation on M-N-C sites with different structures are poorly understood. In this work, five different Co-N-C models (Co-N3-C, Co-N4-C, 0N-bridged Co2-N6-C, 1N-bridged Co2-N7-C and 2N-bridged Co2-N6-C) were constructed to simulate the Co active sites with different coordination that may exist on the surface of MOF-derived Co-based carbon materials. DFT combined with kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) methods were used to study the catalytic performance for hydroformylation of different Co-N-C models. The results of the DFT calculations show that the coordination number and mode of N atoms could regulate the electronic density of the Co sites. The electronic density of the Co sites further affects the catalytic activity. The higher the electronic density is, the lower the energy barrier for partial hydrogenation of propylene and CO insertion reactions. Besides, the catalytic activity is also affected by the strong interaction in closer neighboring Co atoms in some Co2-Nx-C models. The strong interaction affects the adsorption state and energy of species, which also reduces the overall reaction energy barrier. The kMC simulation results further showed that the dominant path of propylene hydroformylation was the n-butylaldehyde path for the 0N-bridged model, and the isobutylaldehyde path for Co-N3-C and 2N-bridged models.

Excellent 5f-electron magnet of actinide atom decorated gh-C3N4 monolayer

Atomic functionality of two-dimensional (2D) materials, typically with a controllable doping route for offering regular atomic arrangement as well as excellent magnetism, is crucial for both fundamental studies and spintronic applications. Here, the adsorptions of the 5f-electron actinide series (An = Ac-Am) on porous graphene-like carbon-nitride (gh-C3N4) layers are explored to determine their structural stabilities, electronic nature and magnetic properties using the combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and chemical bonding analyses. Our investigations reveal that each An atom can be individually adsorbed at the vacancy site of gh-C3N4 sheet with high energetic, thermal and dynamical stabilities, which are rooted in the major interactions of ionic An-N bonding as well as the minor interactions of covalent bonding of An-5f6d states with N-2s2p states. The delocalization of a very few 5f electrons is dependent on whether they occupy the suborbitals that are matching and conducive to hybridize with the ligand orbitals forming the 5f-2s2p covalent bonds. We propose that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) mechanism plays a determining role for the inter-atomic 5f-5f magnetic exchange via the 6d electrons as the conduction electrons. Large magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) from the localized 5f electrons, together with the metallic characteristics owing to the delocalized 6d electrons, render these An-based 2D materials excellent metallic magnets, especially for the U@gh-C3N4 system with the modest magnetic moment of 0.6 μB, large MAE of 53 meV and high Curie temperature (TC) of 538 K.

Origins of Fermi Level Pinning for Ni and Ag Metal Contacts on Tungsten Dichalcogenides

Tungsten transition metal dichalcogenides (W-TMDs) are intriguing due to their properties and potential for application in next-generation electronic devices. However, strong Fermi level (EF) pinning manifests at the metal/W-TMD interfaces, which could tremendously restrain the carrier injection into the channel. In this work, we illustrate the origins of EF pinning for Ni and Ag contacts on W-TMDs by considering interface chemistry, band alignment, impurities, and imperfections of W-TMDs, contact metal adsorption mechanism, and the resultant electronic structure. We conclude that the origins of EF pinning at a covalent contact metal/W-TMD interface, such as Ni/W-TMDs, can be attributed to defects, impurities, and interface reaction products. In contrast, for a van der Waals contact metal/TMD system such as Ag/W-TMDs, the primary factor responsible for EF pinning is the electronic modification of the TMDs resulting from the defects and impurities with the minor impact of metal-induced gap states. The potential strategies for carefully engineering the metal deposition approach are also discussed. This work unveils the origins of EF pinning at metal/TMD interfaces experimentally and theoretically and provides guidance on further enhancing and improving the device performance.
