Abstract
The envelope demarcates the boundary between bacterial cell and its environment, providing a place for bacteria to transport nutrients and excrete metabolic waste, while buffering external environmental stress. Envelope stress responses (ESRs) are important tools for bacteria to sense and repair envelope damage. In this review, we discussed evidence that indicates the important role of the Cpx ESR in pathogen-host interactions, including environmental stress sensing and responses, modulation of bacterial virulence, antimicrobial resistance, and inter-kingdom signaling.

Abstract
Normal follicular development is the basis for ovulation in poultry. Our previous sequencing analysis revealed a high expression of miR-24-3p in chicken follicles from degenerated ovaries, suggesting that miR-24-3p may modulate follicular development. Hence, this study investigated the specific mechanisms of miR-24-3p in regulating chicken follicular development. The results revealed that the proliferation, lipid synthesis, and progesterone secretion were significantly inhibited after miR-24-3p overexpression in chicken granulosa cells, vice versa by miR-24-3p knockdown. Dual-specificity phosphatase 16 (DUSP16) and thousand and one amino acid kinase 1 (TAOK1) were identified as potential target genes of miR-24-3p. Further validation revealed that knockdown of DUSP16 and TAOK1 suppressed proliferation, lipid synthesis, and progesterone secretion in chicken granulosa cells. Moreover, we observed that miR-24-3p, along with knockdown of DUSP16 and TAOK1, increased the phosphorylation levels of extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2). Our previous study proved that activation of ERK1/2 inhibited lipid synthesis and progesterone secretion of chicken granulosa cells. In summary, we demonstrated that miR-24-3p targeting DUSP16 and TAOK1 disrupts lipid synthesis and progesterone secretion via ERK1/2 signaling pathway in chicken granulosa cells in vitro. These results may provide a new theoretical basis for resolving miRNAs regulation on reproductive performance of chickens.

Abstract
The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the critical need for effective viral diagnostics. Although polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a well-established nucleotide amplification technique, its limitations, such as the need for expensive equipment and skilled technicians, have led to the exploration of alternative methods, including loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Bats, as a crucial natural reservoir of coronaviruses (CoVs), particularly Scotophilus bat coronavirus 512 (Scotophilus bat-CoV 512) prevalent among Taiwan's bat population, are the focus of this study. We aimed to detect Scotophilus bat-CoV 512 from bats in field conditions using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for on-site detection. Therefore, our study delves into the specificity of the LAMP reaction, emphasizing the careful design of primers to prevent false positive results. A cross reactivity and primer specificity test involving seven different microorganisms, including closely related bat CoVs and two bacterial species typically found in feces, revealed that the LAMP assay uniquely detected Scotophilus bat-CoV 512. The developed colorimetric reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay was optimized for the primers targeting nucleocapsid (N) gene, and the sensitivity test revealed a detection limit of 2.4 × 103 copies/µL. Our findings indicate the potential of the RT-LAMP assay for on-site detection in the field and subsequent laboratory analysis for comprehensive sampling and further research on bat CoV isolation. The surveillance and monitoring of bat CoVs contribute substantially to mitigating human threats, particularly concerning the emergence of new pandemic variants.

Abstract
Copper (Cu), an essential trace element in the metabolism of mammals, plays a central role in various metabolic processes. However, overdosing can lead to severe symptoms and even fatalities. Chronic Cu intoxication continues to be a problem in grazing and domestic animals, with sheep being particularly sensitive. There are few comparative studies on its impact on South American camelids (SACs). Therefore, this work presents the results of literature research combined with a case report on a 3-year-old female vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) presented to the clinic from a zoological garden in northern Germany. The animal showed reduced food intake, recumbency, bruxism, icteric mucous membranes and sclera. Auscultation revealed atony of the third compartment and the digestive tract. Similar to cases described in the literature, the animal showed rapid deterioration of its condition with unspecific symptoms of liver failure and rapid death. However, in contrast to descriptions in sheep, clinical icterus has not been previously reported in cases of other SACs. Laboratory findings from EDTA and serum samples revealed neutrophilia with a left shift, hypoproteinaemia, lymphopaenia, azotaemia, elevated levels of creatine kinase (CK), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) in the serum. Hyperbilirubinaemia and significantly elevated serum and liver Cu levels were observed. Subsequent blood samples from the remaining vicuñas and alpacas in the same enclosure showed no remarkable abnormalities. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this case report represents the first documented case of Cu intoxication specifically in vicuñas.

Abstract
An unbalanced diet and poor lifestyle are common reasons for numerous health complications in humans. Probiotics are known to provide substantial benefits to human health by producing several bioactive compounds, vitamins, short-chain fatty acids and short peptides. Diets that contain probiotics are limited to curd, yoghurt, kefir, kimchi, etc. However, exploring the identification of more potential probiotics and enhancing their commercial application to improve the nutritional quality would be a significant step to utilizing the maximum benefits. The complex evolution patterns among the probiotics are the hurdles in their characterization and adequate application in the industries and dairy products. This article has mainly discussed the molecular methods of characterization that are based on the analysis of ribosomal RNA, whole genome, and protein markers and profiles. It also has critically emphasized the emerging challenges in industrial applications of probiotics.

Abstract
Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2), a significant pathogen in the global swine industry, causes Porcine Circovirus Associated Diseases (PCVAD), contributing to substantial economic losses. This study investigates the genetic diversity and evolutionary dynamics of PCV2 in Vietnam from 2007 to 2023. We sequenced and analyzed 47 PCV2 genomes isolated from swine farms across Vietnam between 2022 and 2023, revealing predominant circulation of PCV2d (80.85%) followed by PCV2b (19.15%). Phylogenetic analysis identified PCV2 genotypes PCV2a, PCV2b, PCV2d, PCV2g, and PCV2h circulating in Vietnam, with PCV2d emerging as the most prevalent genotype. Comparison with historical data highlighted genotype shifts from PCV2b to PCV2d in 2014. Interestingly, PCV2h genotype was mainly observed between 2008 and 2012 but have not been detected since 2014. Regional analysis indicated varied PCV2 epidemiological patterns between northern and southern Vietnam. Amino acid substitutions within the capsid protein were identified, predominantly in antigenic regions critical for immune recognition. Positive selection analysis identified multiple sites under evolutionary pressure, indicating ongoing adaptation of Vietnamese PCV2 strains. These findings enhance understanding of PCV2 dynamics in Vietnam and underscore the importance of continuous surveillance and adaptive management strategies in controlling PCV2-associated diseases in swine populations.

Abstract
Skin infections are common complications in both humans and animals. Because of the increased incidence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) skin infections, essential oils have been suggested as potential alternatives to the classic antimicrobials. The goal of this study was to evaluate the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal/fungicidal concentrations (MIC and MBC/MFC) of commercially available products containing essential oils, zinc gluconate, or 4% chlorhexidine. Microbroth dilution technique was performed on clinical isolates of MDR Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MDR-SP; n = 10), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA; n = 10), and Malassezia pachydermatis (MP; n = 10). For MDR-SP, essential oil-containing products showed median MICs of 1:240 and 1:320. The chlorhexidine shampoo had a MIC of 1:128,000 (0.312 µg/mL), whereas zinc gluconate products had median MICs of 1:320 and 1:160. Three essential oil-containing shampoos (MBC 1:40), the zinc gluconate (MBC 1:40), and the chlorhexidine (MBC 1:64,000 [0.625 µg/mL]) reached an MBC. For PA, essential oil-containing products showed median MICs of 1:30 and 1:80. The zinc-gluconate products had a median MIC of 1:160, whereas the chlorhexidine shampoo had a median MIC of 1:4,000 (10 µg/mL). Only the zinc-gluconate products (MBC 1:80) and the chlorhexidine shampoo (MBC 1:2,000 [20 µg/mL]) reached an MBC. For MP, essential oil-containing and zinc-gluconate products showed lower median MICs (1:4,800 and 7,200) for shampoos compared with other formulations (1:160 and 1:320), whereas the chlorhexidine shampoo had a median MIC of 1:80,000 (0.5 µg/mL). These results suggest that natural topical compounds can be an effective alternative to treat skin infections in companion animals. Further in vivo studies are needed to clinically confirm this study's results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Organic trace minerals (TM) offer superior nutritional benefits because of their stable structure, making their addition to broiler diets potentially beneficial during challenging periods such as aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination. The present study evaluated the impacts of different replacement levels of inorganic TM (ITM) with advanced chelate technology-based TM (ACTM) on the growth performance, serum biochemical parameters, antioxidant indicators, and some inflammatory and immune parameters of broilers fed diets contaminated with AFB1. A 42-day experiment involved randomly assigning 1-day-old broiler chickens (n = 480) to one of five dietary treatments, each with six replicates. The treatments were as follows: (1) NC: basal diet without AFB1 and recommended ITM levels; (2) PC: basal diet with 0.5 mg kg-1 AFB1 and recommended ITM levels; (3) TB: PC diet +1 g kg-1 toxin binder; (4) ACTM50: replacement of ITM with 50% ACTM in the PC diet; and (5) ACTM100: replacement of ITM with 100% ACTM in the PC diet. RESULTS Compared with PC treatment, ACTM100 treatment resulted in increased (P < 0.05) body weight gain, serum zinc and glutathione concentrations, immunoglobulin Y level, antioxidant enzyme activities, and hepatic gene expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, glutathione peroxidase-1, superoxide dismutase-1 and transforming growth factor beta 1. The ACTM100 group also exhibited decreased AFB1 residue in the liver and kidney, serum alanine transaminase activity and malondialdehyde concentration, and hepatic gene expression levels of nuclear factor-kappa B and interferon-gamma (P < 0.05). These values were comparable to those recorded in the TB and NC treatments. CONCLUSION In conclusion, completely replacing ITM with ACTM can benefit the metabolism and mitigate AFB1-induced immunotoxicity and oxidative damage in chickens by altering the mRNA expression of nuclear factor-kappa B and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, and some genes downstream their signaling pathways. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The liver plays a dual role in regulating temperature and immune responses. Examining the influence of heat stress (HS) on liver T cells contributes significantly to understanding the intricate interplay between the immune system and hepatic tissues under thermal stress. This study focused on investigating the characteristics of the T-cell receptor (TCR) β chain CDR3 repertoire in bovine liver samples under both HS and pairfed (PF) environmental conditions. METHODS Sequencing data from six samples sourced from the GEO database underwent annotation. Utilizing immunarch and VDJtool software, the study conducted comprehensive analyses encompassing basic evaluation, clonality assessment, immune repertoire comparison, diversity estimation, gene usage profiling, VJ gene segment pairing scrutiny, clonal tracking, and Kmers analysis. RESULTS All four TCR chains, namely α, β, γ, and δ, were detected, with the α chains exhibiting the highest detection frequency, followed closely by the β chains. The prevalence of αβ TCRs in bovine liver samples underscored their crucial role in governing hepatic tissue's physiological functions. The TCR β CDR3 repertoire showcased substantial inter-individual variability, featuring diverse clonotypes exhibiting distinct amino acid lengths. Intriguingly, HS cattle displayed heightened diversity and clonality, suggesting potential peripheral T cell migration into the liver under environmental conditions. Notably, differential VJ gene pairings were observed in HS cattle compared to the PF, despite individual variations in V and J gene utilization. Additionally, while most high-frequency amino acid 5-mers remained consistent between the HS and PF, GELHF, and YDYHF were notably prevalent in the HS group. Across all samples, a prevalent trend of high-frequency 5mers skewed towards polar and hydrophobic amino acids was evident. CONCLUSION This study elucidates the characteristics of liver TCR β chain CDR3 repertoire under HS conditions, enhancing our understanding of HS implications.

Abstract
This comprehensive review explores the intricate relationship between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, and aggression. It provides a detailed overview of the physiology and functioning of these axes, as well as the implications for aggressive behavior. The HPA axis, responsible for the stress response, is activated in response to various stressors and can influence aggressive behavior. Glucocorticoids, such as cortisol, play a crucial role in stress-induced activation of the HPA axis and have been implicated in aggressive tendencies. Chronic stress can dysregulate the HPA axis, leading to alterations in cortisol levels and potentially contributing to aggressive behavior. The HPG axis, particularly the androgen hormone testosterone, is also closely linked to aggression. Animal and human studies have consistently shown a positive association between testosterone levels and aggression. The androgen receptors in the brain's neural circuitry play a critical role in modulating aggressive behavior. Interactions between the HPA and HPG axes further contribute to the regulation of aggression. Feedback mechanisms and crosstalk between these axes provide a complex system for the modulation of both stress and reproductive functions, which can impact aggressive behavior. Additionally,the influence of stress on reproductive functions, particularly the role of androgens in stress-induced aggression, adds further complexity to this relationship. The review also discusses the future directions and implications for clinical interventions. Understanding the neurobiological mechanisms underlying aggression requires integrating molecular, cellular, and circuit-level approaches. Translational perspectives, including animal models and human studies, can bridge the gap between basic research and clinical applications. Finally, therapeutic strategies for aggression-related disorders are explored, highlighting the importance of targeted interventions based on a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between the HPA and HPG axes. In conclusion, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the physiological and neurobiological mechanisms underlying aggression, with a specific focus on the interplay between the HPA and HPG axes. By elucidating the complex interactions between stress, hormones, and aggressive behavior, this research paves the way for future investigations and potential therapeutic interventions for aggression-related disorders.

Abstract
Background: Machine learning algorithms that can quickly and easily estimate skin permeability (Kp) are increasingly being used in drug delivery research. The linear free energy relationship (LFER) developed by Abraham is a practical technique for predicting Kp. The permeability coefficients and Abraham solute descriptor values for 175 organic compounds have been documented in the scientific literature.Purpose: The purpose of this project was to use a publicly available dataset to make skin permeability predictions using the random forest and XBoost regression techniques.Methods: We employed Pandas-based methods in JupyterLab to predict permeability coefficient (Kp) from solute descriptors (excess molar refraction [E], combined dipolarity/polarizability [S], overall solute hydrogen bond acidity and basicity [A and B], and the McGowan's characteristic molecular volume [V]).Results: The random forest and XG Boost regression models established statistically significant association between the descriptors and the skin permeability coefficient.

Abstract
Chinese herbal formula (CHF) has the potential to improve the performance of aged laying hens through integrated regulation of various physiological functions. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary CHF supplementation on the yolk fatty acid profile in aged laying hens. A total of 144 healthy 307-day-old Xinyang black-feather laying hens were randomly allocated into two groups: a control group (CON, fed a basal diet) and a CHF group (fed a basal diet supplemented with 1% CHF; contained 0.30% Leonurus japonicus Houtt., 0.20% Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge., 0.25% Ligustrum lucidum Ait., and 0.25% Taraxacum mongolicum Hand.-Mazz. for 120 days). The fatty acid concentrations in egg yolks were analyzed using a targeted metabolomics technology at days 60 and 120 of the trial. The results showed that dietary CHF supplementation increased (p < .05) the concentrations of several saturated fatty acids (SFA, including myristic acid and stearic acid), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA, including petroselinic acid, elaidic acid, trans-11-eicosenoic acid, and cis-11-eicosenoic acid), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, including linolelaidic acid, linoleic acid, γ-linolenic acid, α-linolenic acid, 11c,14c-eicosadienoic acid, eicosatrienoic acid, homo-γ-linolenic acid, arachidonic acid, and docosapentaenoic acid), and fatty acid indexes (total MUFA, n-3 and n-6 PUFA, PUFA/SFA, hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolaemic ratio, health promotion index, and desirable fatty acids) in egg yolks. Collectively, these findings suggest that dietary CHF supplementation could improve the nutritional value of fatty acids in egg yolks of aged laying hens, which would be beneficial for the production of healthier eggs to meet consumer demands.

Abstract
Adult horses are susceptible to equine coronavirus (ECoV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), although, only ECoV has been linked to clinical disease. Little information is available regarding the seroprevalence against ECoV and SARS-CoV-2 in adult healthy horses. The goal of the present study was to determine the seroprevalence against two coronaviruses known to infect horses using convenience samples collected from horses recently imported from Europe to the United States from 2019 to 2023. A total of 385 banked serum samples were tested against ECoV and SARS-CoV-2 using previously validated ELISA assays. Prevalence factors including date of arrival in the United States, signalment and country of origin were available for the majority of the horses. A total of 9/385 (2.3%) and 4/385 (1.0%) horses tested seropositive for ECoV and SARS-CoV-2, respectively. The ECoV seropositive horses were all mares, ages 4 to 26 years (median 9 years) and originated from Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium and Italy. These mares were predominantly imported during the summer and fall months. All SARS-CoV-2 seropositive horses were mares ages 5 to 10 years (median 7.5 years) imported from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The majority of the SARS-CoV-2 seropositive horses were imported during the colder months of the year. The study results support the presence of ECoV in Europe and report on the first SARS-CoV-2 seropositive healthy adult horses outside the United States. Commingling for movements by air and close contact to humans may predispose transmission with ECoV and SARS-CoV-2, respectively.

Abstract
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is of major public health concern due to its resistance to multiple antibiotics. This resistance has been observed in various settings, including hospitals and communities, and has been detected in both animals and humans. Although peridomestic rat species (Rattus spp.) are well described reservoirs of several human pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria, little is known about their role in MRSA epidemiology. In order to investigate whether Rattus spp. in Hong Kong are potential carriers of MRSA, 221 rats were caught from various ecological areas and nasopharyngeal samples were cultured on MRSA selective media. Genotypic characteristics of MRSA were confirmed by whole genome sequencing. Two clonal sequence type (ST) 30 MRSA isolates, harbouring mecA on staphylococcal chromosome cassette (SCC) mec type IVc, were cultured from two house rats (Rattus tanezumi) caught in two densely populated urban areas. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first detection of community-associated (CA)-MRSA strain ST30 SCCmec IVc in peridomestic rodents in Hong Kong and globally. Our finding indicates that house rats can be carriers of MRSA strains that are widely distributed in the community.

Abstract
The extensive investigation into the capacity of mealworms to digest diverse food by-products, as well as plastic wastes, has been a focal point in recent years. The transition from traditional diet sources like brans to food wastes has the potential to impact the physiological properties of mealworms. This study explored the utilization of various industrial food wastes such as okara, barley spent grain (BSG), sesame oil meal (SOM), and spent coffee grounds (SCG) as feed alternatives, and reports on their survival rate, biomass variations, and nutritional composition. In additional, the shift in their gut microbiota was also assessed. Among the range of industrial food wastes, mealworms exhibited the most robust growth performance when nourished with BSG. This particular group showed a survival rate of 98.33 % and a biomass increase of 23.06 %. In contrast, mealworms fed with SCG demonstrated the lowest survival rate and experienced a significant reduction in biomass. Although the groups fed with okara and SCG displayed moderate growth performance, both exhibited protein levels comparable to those observed in the oatmeal-fed group (used as the positive control). Notably, the inclusion of BSG in the mealworm diet exhibited the potential to enrich their omega-3 fatty acid content, suggesting potential benefits for applications as animal feed or even human consumption. Furthermore, an analysis of the gut microbiome was conducted to investigate the associations between specific diets and the composition of mealworm gut microbiota. In summary, food wastes such as BSG may be repurposed as feed substrates for mealworms before converting them into an alternative source of protein.

Abstract
TP53 mutations are associated with short survival and poor treatment response in canine diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (cDLBCL). The expression of TP53 by RNAscope® in situ hybridization and p53 by immunohistochemistry (IHC) was investigated in 37 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded cDLBCL, to assess their correlation with TP53 mutational status and to evaluate their prognostic value. TP53 was detected in all samples by RNAscope®. Ten of 37 (27%) cases expressed p53 by IHC, with highly variable percentage of positive cells. TP53 RNAscope® scores and p53 IHC results were not correlated. The expression of TP53 by RNAscope® was not influenced by its mutational status. Conversely, p53 IHC and TP53 mutations were significantly associated. p53 IHC predicted TP53 genetic mutations with high accuracy (97.3%). All TP53-mutated samples carrying missense mutations exhibited p53 expression by IHC, while all wild-type cases and a single case with frameshift insertion were negative. In univariable analysis, p53 IHC was associated with shorter time to progression (TTP) and lymphoma-specific survival (LSS). Nevertheless, in multivariable analysis, only treatment significantly affected TTP and LSS. These findings suggest p53 IHC is an accurate, cost-effective tool for predicting TP53 mutations in cDLBCL, unlike TP53 RNAscope®, though its prognostic value requires further validation.

Abstract
Understanding the impact of parasites on wildlife populations is an important aspect of conservation management. However, research on ectoparasites in wildlife can be difficult, as examinations of live animals which are not habituated to human handling are often impossible. The European wildcat (Felis silvestris) is a strictly protected wildlife species whose population has been recovering in Germany in recent decades. Several studies from different European countries have investigated the parasitological status of European wildcat populations. However, most of these studies assessed endoparasite infections, whereas ectoparasite infestations have often been neglected. To fill this knowledge gap for wildcats in Germany, 131 dead found specimens were examined for ectoparasites by macroscopic and microscopic examination of the fur and the ear canals. Infestation with ectoparasites was present in 84.0% (110/131) of the wildcats. Ticks showed the highest prevalence with 72.5% (95/131) of wildcats infested, with 49.6% (65/131) infested with Ixodes ricinus and 36.6% (48/131) with Ixodes hexagonus/canisuga. A total of 27.5% (36/131) of the wildcats were positive for at least one flea species. Of the nine different flea species identified by morphology and/or molecular analyses, Ceratophyllidae were most common (16.8% [22/131]), with Ceratophyllus sciurorum confirmed on 12.2% (16/131) and Nosopsyllus fasciatus on 1.5% (2/131) animals, followed by Pulex irritans (5.3% [7/131]), Spilopsyllus cuniculi (3.8% [5/131]), Chaetopsylla spp. (3.1% [4/131]) (2/131 Chaetopsylla trichosa and 1/131 Chaetopsylla globiceps), Ctenocephalides felis (1.5% [2/131]), Archaeopsylla erinacei (1.5% [2/131]) and Ctenophthalmus baeticus (0.8% [1/131]). Further, 23.7% (31/131) of the wildcats harboured mites, identified as Trombicula autumnalis in 12.2% (16/131) and Otodectes cynotis in 4.8% (6/124) of cases. The only louse species detected was Felicola hercynianus with a prevalence of 2.3% (3/131). Infestation intensities ranged from 1 to 86 ticks, 1-49 fleas, 1-1896 mites, and 1-92 F. hercynianus per wildcat. This study demonstrates that a variety of ectoparasites infests wildcats in Germany, but they do not seem to have a serious impact on the general health of wildcats, as judged by the hosts' mostly good or very good nutritional condition. In addition, the potential risk to domestic cats (Felis catus) and humans posed by the wildcats' ectoparasites, appears to be low but present.

Abstract
Diligent application and implementation of biosecurity measures stand as the most effective measures to prevent disease transmission through direct or indirect interactions between poultry and free-ranging animals. Among these, free-ranging mammals can be hosts or disseminators of several pathogens relevant to poultry and of public health concern. Moreover, evidence of susceptibility to avian influenza virus infection in non-human mammals has raised questions about their potential role in the virus' epidemiology at the domestic animal-wildlife interface. Given this background, this study aimed to identify mammal species occurring near laying-hen houses and characterize the spatiotemporal patterns of these visits. Seven camera traps were deployed for a year-long period in three commercial poultry farms in a densely populated poultry area in Northern Italy. Various methods, including time series analysis and generalized linear models, were employed to analyze daily mammal visits. A total of 1,867 camera trap nights yielded 567 videos of seven species of wild mammals, and 1,866 videos showed domestic pet species (cats and dogs). Coypus (Myocastor coypus) and cats were the two mammals more frequently observed near poultry houses. For wild mammals, visits significantly increased at night, and slightly decreased during the spring season. Overall, the data hereby provided lay the groundwork for designing novel surveillance and intervention strategies to prevent cross-species disease transmission. Moreover, the utilization of visual evidence depicting free-ranging animals approaching poultry houses could assist health authorities in educating and raising awareness among stakeholders about potential risks of pathogen spillover.

Abstract
Bos indicus cattle are important to beef production in hot, humid climates, but they have a reputation for producing tougher beef with more variability. Reduced and delayed degradation of muscle proteins postmortem is a major reason underlying these tenderness challenges. Inherent muscle metabolic characteristics and processing conditions shape the early dynamics of postmortem metabolism and protein degradation after harvest, which impacts subsequent tenderization. Skeletal muscles exhibit diverse metabolic and contractile properties, and metabolic pathways are coordinated to regulate flux under variable working conditions. Considering how living muscles respond and adapt to cellular stress may enhance our understanding of muscle death and quality development. The aim of this review is to examine how muscle properties influence metabolism and cellular response in the context of early postmortem muscle to meat conversion, and specifically, their potential contribution to variation in proteolysis in Bos indicus beef.

Abstract
Nanoparticles (NPs) are utilized in various applications, posing potential risks to human health, tissues, cells, and macromolecules. This study aimed to investigate the ultrastructural alterations in hepatocytes and renal tubular cells induced by metallic and metal oxide NPs. Adult healthy male Wistar albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into 6 (n = 7) control and 6 treated groups (n = 7). The rats in the treated groups exposed daily to silver NPs, gold NPs, zinc oxide NPs, silicon dioxide NPs, copper oxide NPs, and ferric oxide NPs for 35 days. The members of the control group for each corresponding NPs received the respective vehicle. Liver and kidney tissue blocks from all rats were processed for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) examinations. The hepatocytes and renal tubular cells of all NPs-treated rats demonstrated mitochondrial ultrastructural alterations mainly cristolysis, swelling, membrane disruption, lucent matrices, matrices lysis, and electron-dense deposits. However, other organelles demonstrated injury but to a lesser extent in the form of shrunken nuclei, nuclear membrane indentation, endoplasmic reticulum fragmentation, cellular membranes enfolding, brush border microvilli disruption, lysosomal hyperplasia, ribosomes dropping, and peroxisome formation. One may conclude from the findings that the hepatocytes and the renal tubular cells mitochondria are the main targets for nanoparticles toxicity ending in mitochondrial disruption and cell injury. Further studies taking into account the relation of mitochondrial ultrastructural damage with a weakened antioxidant defense system induced by chronic exposure to nanomaterials are needed.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the dietary addition of zinc (Zn) in the form of sulphate (Zn-S), glycine (Zn-G), and hydroxychloride (Zn-H) on quail performance, eggshell quality, antioxidant status, mineral excretion, biomechanical properties and mineralization of bone. A total of 75 female quails (10-weeks-old) were randomly distributed into 3 groups with 5 replications, each with 5 female quails. Treatment groups were set up by adding Zn-S and Zn-H as the inorganic form and Zn-G as the organic form of zinc to the corn-soybean basal diet (34.14 mg/kg Zn) to obtain 50 mg/kg Zn and the feeding experiment lasted for 12 weeks. Performance parameters and egg production were not impaired by the Zn source (P > 0.05). The inclusion of Zn-S in the diet produced a reduction in eggshell thickness, while an improvement in yolk antioxidant capacity (measured as MDA concentration) was detected compared to the other Zn sources (P < 0.05). Shear strength and cortical bone area increased (P < 0.05) with Zn-G supplementation, however, the mineral concentration of the tibia was higher (P < 0.01) in those quails who had received Zn-H. Lower levels of mineral excretion were observed in both types of supplementations compared to Zn-S. Therefore, it can be stated that Zn-G or Zn-H supplementation in the diet of laying quails could be an interesting strategy to reduce mineral excretion and improve bone mineralization without affecting performance compared to Zn-S. However, further studies are needed to determine the differences between Zn-G and Zn-H.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colobines are primarily leaf-eating primates, depend on microbiota of gastrointestinal tracts for food digestion. However, the gut microbiota of Malaysia's colobines specifically langurs remains unstudied. AIMS Hence, we aim to analyze the fecal microbiomes of Malaysia's langurs using Presbytis femoralis, Presbytis robinsoni, Trachypithecus obscurus, and Trachypithecus cristatus from various landscapes as models. MATERIAL AND METHODS We collected samples from all four species across several areas in Peninsular Malaysia and performed 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing using the Illumina sequencing platform. RESULTS Presbytis femoralis exhibited the highest bacterial diversity, followed by T. obscurus, T. cristatus, P. robinsoni and the lowest, P. siamensis. Over 11 million operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified across Malaysia's langurs spanning 26 phyla, 180 families, and 329 genera of microbes. The OTUs were dominated by Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. There are 11 genera of pathogenic bacteria were identified across all host species. Nine pathogenic bacterial genera inhabit both T. obscurus, indicating poor health due to low bacterial diversity and heightened pathogenicity. In contrast, P. robinsoni with the fewest pathogenic species is deemed the healthiest among Malaysia's langurs. DISCUSSION This study demonstrates that alterations in diet, behavior, and habitat affect bacterial diversity in Malaysia's langurs' gut microbiota. Even though this is the first comprehensive analysis of langur microbiomes in Malaysia, it is important to note the limitations regarding the number of samples, populations sampled, and the geographical origins and landscapes of these populations. Our results suggest that Malaysia's langurs may harbor pathogenic bacteria, potentially posing a risk of transmission to humans. CONCLUSION This highlights the critical need for the conservation and management of Malaysia's langurs, particularly considering their interactions with humans. This data can serve as a foundation for authorities to inform the public about the origins and significance of animal health and the management of zoonotic diseases.

This study aimed to determine domestic and imported subtypes of Cryptosporidium species in Norway, evaluate their demographic distribution, and identify potential small outbreaks. Cryptosporidium-positive human faecal samples were obtained from six medical microbiology laboratories between February 2022 and January 2024, together with 22 Cryptosporidium-positive animal samples. Species and subtypes were identified by sequencing PCR products from gp60 and SSU rRNA genes. Most cryptosporidiosis cases occurred during late summer/early autumn, primarily in children and young adults. Of 550 human samples, 359 were successfully characterized molecularly (65%), revealing infection with 10 different Cryptosporidium species. C. parvum occurred in 245 (68%) human isolates with IIa and IId being major allele families, with distinct regional distribution patterns of common subtypes. A kindergarten outbreak with 5 cases was due to C. parvum IIaA14G1R1. C. mortiferum was identified in 33 (9.2%) human cases of which 24 were known to be of domestic origin, making it the second most common species in human autochthonous cases in Norway. All C. mortiferum isolates were of the same genotype; XIVaA20G2T1, including 13 cases from a suspected small outbreak in Trøndelag. C. hominis occurred in 68 typed cases (19%), but mostly in infections acquired abroad, with allele families Ib and If occurring most often. In conclusion, this study of recent Cryptosporidium spp. and subtypes in Norway, highlights the predominance of C. parvum and the emergence of C. mortiferum among autochthonous cases.

Abstract
Biostimulation aims to optimize reproductive parameters as part of animal management practices by modulating animal sensory systems. Chemical signals, mostly known as pheromones, have a great potential in this regard. This study was conducted to determine the influence of short-term male rabbit exposure to different biological secretions, potentially pheromone-mediated, on reproductive parameters of males. Four groups of 18 males each were exposed to A) doe urine, B) 2-phenoxyethanol, C) doe vaginal swab, and D) distilled water (control), three times over a 2.5h exposure window, just before semen collection. Semen volume, sperm concentration and motility, as well as subpopulation analysis of the spermatozoa were assessed for each condition. Additionally, testosterone levels in blood samples were monitored at five time points over the 2.5 h exposure window. We found a higher percentage of motile, progressive, fast progressive and mid-progressive spermatozoa in any of the three experimental groups compared to the control group. In contrast, the semen volume and the percentage of immotile and non-progressive spermatozoa was generally higher in the control group. We then identified a higher proportion of a subpopulation of fast and progressive spermatozoa in groups A, B, and C compared to group D. Our data indicates that sperm motility increases when animals are exposed to specific biological fluids potentially containing pheromones, and that an increase in sperm volume does not correlate with an increase in spermatozoa concentration, progressiveness, and speed. Finally, no differences in testosterone levels were found among comparisons, although males of groups A and C (exposed to natural female biological fluids) showed a tendency towards higher testosterone levels. In conclusion, our results indicate that rabbit sperm quality increases upon exposure to the biological secretions proposed, thereby supporting further investigation into their molecular identity. This exploration could eventually pave the way for implementing the use of pheromones in rabbit husbandry to enhance reproductive and productive parameters in farmed rabbits.

Abstract
The harmful impact of waterborne copper (Cu) as a common abiotic stressor in aquatic environments has gained much more interest. The present study aimed to investigate the utilization of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) dietary supplementation to mitigate the chronic toxicity of Cu in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Two hundred and forty fish (92.94 ± 0.13 g) were assigned into six groups for 60 days. Control (C), ZnONPs20, and ZnONPs30 groups were fed on basal diets fortified with 0, 20, and 30 mg kg-1 ZnONPs without Cu exposure. Cu, Cu + ZnONPs20, and Cu + ZnONPs30 groups were exposed to Cu at a dose of 10 mg L-1 and fed on basal diets fortified with 0, 20, and 30 mg kg-1 ZnONPs, respectively. The results revealed that the Cu-exposed fish experienced abnormal clinical signs and behavioral changes. The growth indices and acetylcholine esterase activity were significantly decreased (P < 0.05) in the Cu group. Meanwhile, hepatorenal and serum stress indices (P < 0.05) were significantly elevated with chronic Cu exposure. In addition, a higher expression of stress (P < 0.05) (heat shock protein 60 and hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha) and apoptotic-related genes (C/EBP homologous protein, caspase-3, and Bcl-2 Associated X-protein) with down-regulation (P < 0.05) of the anti-apoptotic-related genes (B-cell lymphoma 2 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen) was noticed in the Cu-exposed fish. Histopathological alterations in the gills, liver, kidney, and spleen were markedly reported in the Cu-exposed group. The dietary supplementation with ZnONPs significantly alleviated the negative impacts of chronic waterborne-Cu exposure on growth performance, physiological changes, gene expression, and tissue architecture, especially at 30 mg kg-1 diet level. In particular, the inclusion of ZnONPs at the 30 mg kg-1 diet level produced better outcomes than the 20 mg kg-1 diet. Overall, ZnONPs could be added as a feed supplement in the C. gariepinus diet to boost the fish's health and productivity and alleviate the stress condition brought on by Cu exposure.

Abstract
An increasing trend in zoonotic and emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) has been observed worldwide. Most EID outbreaks originate from wildlife, and these outbreaks often involve pathogen-host-environment interaction. Garbage dumps act as an interface between humans, animals, and the environment, from which EIDs could arise. Therefore, this review considers the presence of important pathogens associated with animals and vectors at garbage dumps from a One Health perspective, looking at animal, human, and environmental factors that play a role. A narrative review was performed focusing on four key points, including garbage dumps, animals, waste pickers, zoonoses and EIDs. Articles addressing the presence of terrestrial animals, insects in garbage dumps, and infectious diseases among waste pickers were included in this study. There were 345 relevant articles covering 395 species of terrestrial animals and insects, consisting of 4 species of amphibians, 180 species of birds, 84 species of insects, 114 species of mammals, and 13 species of reptiles. Furthermore, 97 articles (28.12 %) addressed pathogens found in those populations. About half of the articles were interested in bacterial diseases (52.58 %), followed by parasitic diseases (30.93 %) and viral diseases (30.93 %). Zoonotic pathogens were described in 53.6 % of all articles, while 19.59 % focused on drug-resistant microbes, 13.40 % on rodent-borne diseases, and 7.21 % on vector-borne diseases. Garbage dumps would play a role in the emergence of diseases. The relevant factors at garbage dumps that may increase the risk of disease emergence include increased animal populations and density, increased vector population, newly evolved strains of pathogens, increased interaction between humans, domestic animals, wildlife, and vectors, and socio-economic factors. Therefore, sustainable waste management will reduce waste generation, and improve waste collection, and disposal which helps reduce the emergence of new diseases.

Abstract
Multiple genetic variants of H1 and H3 influenza A viruses (IAVs) circulate concurrently in US swine farms. Understanding the spatial transmission patterns of IAVs among these farms is crucial for developing effective control strategies and mitigating the emergence of novel IAVs. In this study, we analysed 1909 IAV genomic sequences from 785 US swine farms, representing 33 farming systems across 12 states, primarily in the Midwest from 2004 to 2023. Bayesian phylogeographic analyses were performed to identify the dispersal patterns of both H1 and H3 virus genetic lineages and to elucidate their spatial migration patterns within and between different systems. Our results showed that both intra-system and inter-system migrations occurred between the swine farms, with intra-system migrations being more frequent. However, migration rates for H1 and H3 IAVs were similar between intra-system and inter-system migration events. Spatial migration patterns aligned with expected pig movement across different compartments of swine farming systems. Sow-Farms were identified as key sources of viruses, with bi-directional migration observed between these farms and other parts of the system, including Wean-to-Finish and Gilt-Development-Units. High intra-system migration was detected across farms in the same region, while spread to geographically distant intra- and inter-system farms was less frequent. These findings suggest that prioritizing resources towards systems frequently confronting influenza problems and targeting pivotal source farms, such as sow farms, could be an effective strategy for controlling influenza in US commercial swine operations.

Abstract
Canine mammary tumors (CMTs) represent a significant health concern in dogs, with a high incidence among intact female dogs. CMTs are a promising comparative model for human breast cancer, due to sharing several pathophysiological features. Additionally, CMTs have a strong genetic correlation with their human counterpart, including the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs). MiRNAs are a class of non-coding RNAs that play important roles in post-translational regulation of gene expression, being implicated in carcinogenesis, tumor progression, and metastasis. Moreover, miRNAs hold promise as diagnostic, prognostic, and metastatic biomarkers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying CMTs is crucial for improving diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of treatments. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on miRNAs in CMTs, highlighting their roles in carcinogenesis and their potential as biomarkers. Additionally, we highlight the current limitations and critically discuss the overarching challenges in this field, emphasizing the need for future research to translate miRNA findings into veterinary clinical practice.

Abstract
Climate change is a major concern for the near future and for livestock breeding. Cattle breeding, due to its greenhouse gas emissions, is one of the most implicated industries. Consequently, the main future goals are to breed animals resilient to climate change, with the aim of lowering the livestock impact on the environment and selecting animals that will be able to resist different, unsuitable, and changing climates. The aim of this literature review is to compare the most recent studies on the response and adaptation of beef cattle breeds to extreme environments, in terms of genes and pathways involved. Beef breeding is just starting to implement genomics in its selection plans, and shedding light on the genomic responses to extreme climates could speed up and simplify the adaptation of these breeds to climate change. This review discusses the genes involved in climatic stress responses, including those related to extremely cold climates, in beef and dual-purpose cattle breeds. Genes were associated with productive traits, coat and skin structure and development, thermotolerance, cellular physiology and DNA repair mechanisms, immune system, and fertility traits. The knowledge of genes and pathways involved in climate resilience should be taken into consideration for further selection in beef cattle breeding and could promote the valorization of local breeds adapted to extreme environmental conditions. The use of local or resilient breeds could enhance the environmental and social sustainability, animal welfare, and production, compared with the introduction of cosmopolitan breeds with uncertain adaptation in uncontrolled environmental areas.

Abstract
Camels, known as the "Ship of the Desert," play a vital role in the ecosystems and economies of arid and semi-arid regions. They provide meat, milk, transportation, and other essential services, and their resilience to harsh environments makes them invaluable. Despite their similarities, camel breeds exhibit notable differences in size, color, and structure, with over 40 million camels worldwide. This number is projected to increase, underscoring their growing significance. Economically, camels are crucial for food production, tourism, and trade, with camel racing being particularly significant in Arab countries. Their unique physiological traits, such as low disease susceptibility and efficient water conservation, further enhance their value. Camel products, especially meat and milk, offer substantial nutritional and therapeutic benefits, contributing to their high demand. Genetic diversity studies have advanced our understanding of camels' adaptation to extreme environments. Functional genomics and whole-genome sequencing have identified genes responsible for these adaptations, aiding breeding programs and conservation efforts. High-throughput sequencing has revealed genetic markers linked to traits like milk production and disease resistance. The development of SNP chips has revolutionized genetic studies by providing a cost-effective alternative to whole-genome sequencing. These tools facilitate large-scale genotyping, essential for conserving genetic diversity and improving breeding strategies. To prevent the depletion of camel genetic diversity, it is crucial to streamline in situ and ex situ conservation efforts to maintain their ecological and economic value. A comprehensive approach to camel conservation and genetic preservation, involving advanced genomic technologies, reproductive biotechniques, and sustainable management practices, will ensure their continued contribution to human societies.

Abstract
To shed first light on caprine schistosomiasis and its zoonotic potential in Malawi, we conducted a molecular epidemiological investigation, sampling goats (n = 230) across three districts, using faecal miracidia hatching test. Molecular genotyping of miracidia later revealed the prevalence of Schistosoma mattheei to be 0.0 % in Nsanje District (n = 30), 16.7 % in Chikwawa District (n = 30) and 25.3 % in Mangochi District (n = 170). Notably, a miracidium of Schistosoma haematobium was observed from a single goat in Chikwawa. Inspection of carcasses (n = 51) at two local abattoirs in Mangochi District did not find any evidence of caprine schistosomiasis where only a single herd, at Mangochi 3, was infected. Here, despite sampling several other herds nearby, the prevalence was 87.7 % (n = 49), with an animal found excreting 1000 miracidia per 5 g of faeces. At this location, our praziquantel treatment (n = 14) and GPS animal tracking (n = 2) pilot sub-study compared two local goat herds over a three-month period. The daily foraging ranges across a 10 km2 area were recorded, alongside targeted schistosome surveillance within local freshwater intermediate snail hosts. Analysis of GPS data revealed only one herd (infected) to have regular daily water contact with Lake Malawi whereas the other herd (not infected) totally avoided the lake. One week after praziquantel treatment administered at 40 mg/kg, anthelminthic cure rate was 92.3 % while at three months approximately a third of treated animals were shedding schistosome miracidia. Cercariae from several field-caught snails locally were genotyped, inclusive of finding a Schistosoma haematobium-mattheei hybrid. Our findings reveal the focalized nature of caprine schistosomiasis, signposting a novel alert for S. haematobium transmission, and highlight where zoonotic transmission can be intense. To better address zoonotic spill-over from S. mattheei (and/or S. haematobium), the national control programme for schistosomiasis should formally develop targeted surveillance of caprine schistosomiasis and where appropriate, attempt an integrated One Health intervention in future.

Abstract
Leptospirosis is a globally distributed zoonosis with multisystemic involvement in canine species, capable of causing a pulmonary hemorrhagic syndrome (LPHS) in the most severe cases. In humans, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelets to lymphocytes (PLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) have been described as predictors of morbidity and mortality in various pathologies, but no such studies have been developed for canine leptospirosis. Hence, we aimed to assess the usefulness of NLR, PLR and SII in dogs affected with leptospirosis, focusing on those that died or survived after hospitalization, whether or not they developed LPHS. The leptospirosis group was composed by 36 dogs while the control group consisted of 32 healthy dogs. The NLR, associated with inflammation, demonstrated a threefold or greater increase in all leptospirosis groups compared to the control group (median 2.44 ± 1.66) (developing or not LPHS). Dogs that died (median 67.78 ± 158.67), developed LHPS (median 85.17 ± 143.77), or both developed LHPS and died (median 67.78 ± 155,14) had a lower PLR in comparison to the control group (median 101,82 ± 53,75) and the rest of groups, but no statistically significant differences were observed (p > 0.05). The SII was higher in leptospirosis-affected dogs that survived (median 1356,92 ± 2726,29) and statistically significant differences were observed in those who did not develop LPHS (median 1770,41 ± 2630,77; p < 0.05) compared to the control group (median 555,21 ± 313,26). Our data shows that NLR may be used as inflammation indicator, while more studies are needed for PLR and SII in canine leptospirosis.

Abstract
Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a major opportunistic bacterial pathogen that belongs to the skin and mucosal microbiota of the dog. Since its global emergence around 2006, multidrug - methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) clones have become endemic worldwide. MRSP strains pose a significant threat to animal health and make antimicrobial therapy difficult due to their typical multidrug resistance phenotypes. The difficulty to treat MRSP infections using the current antimicrobials licensed for veterinary use has intensified research efforts to develop new treatment strategies and alternative anti-infective approaches to conventional antimicrobial therapy. The present narrative review outlines the latest changes in the epidemiology of MRSP with focus on the geographical distribution variability and antimicrobial resistance profiles in the main MRSP lineages. It also provides an overview of the effectiveness of currently available antimicrobials and the status of anti-infective alternatives to conventional antimicrobials.Recent studies have reported notable changes in the population structure of MRSP, with the emergence of new epidemic lineages, such as ST258, ST123, ST496, and ST551 in European countries and ST45, ST181, ST258, ST496 in non-European countries, which partly or totally replaced those that were initially prevalent, such as ST71 in Europe and ST68 in the US. Due to methicillin resistance often associated with the resistance to a broader number of antimicrobials, treating canine MRSP skin infection is challenging. Several alternative or supplementary treatment options to conventional antibiotics, especially for topical treatment, such as a novel water-soluble hydroxypyridinone-containing iron-chelating 9 kDa polymer (DIBI), antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), nanoparticles, and bacteriophages seem to be particularly interesting from a clinical perspective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to identify the N6-methyladenosine (m6A)- circHECA molecule in secondary hair follicles (SHFs) of cashmere goats, and generate its potential regulatory network, as well as explore the potential relationship between transcriptional pattern of m6A-circHECA and promoter methylation of its host gene (HECA). METHODS The validation of circHECA m6A sites was performed using methylation immunoprecipitation (Me-RIP) along with reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) technique. The nucleus and cytoplasm localizations of m6AcircHECA were performed using SHF stem cells of cashmere goats with RT-qPCR analysis. Based on in-silico analysis, the regulatory networks of m6A-circHECA were generated with related signal pathway enrichment. The methylation level of promoter region of m6A-circHECA host gene (HECA) was assessed by the bisulfite sequencing PCR (BSPPCR) technique. RESULTS The m6A-circHECA was confirmed to contain four m6A modification sites including m6A-213, m6A-297, m6A-780, and m6A-927, and it was detected mainly in cytoplasm of the SHF stem cells of cashmere goats. The integrated regulatory network analysis showed directly or indirectly complex regulatory relationships between m6A-circHECA of cashmere goats and its potential target molecules: miRNAs, mRNAs, and proteins. The regulatory network and pathway enrichment indicated that m6A-circHECA might play multiple roles in the SHF physiology process of cashmere goats through directly or indirectly interacting or regulating its potential target molecules. A higher methylation level of promoter region of HECA gene in SHFs of cashmere goats might cause the lower expression of m6A-circHECA. CONCLUSION The m6A-circHECA might play multiple roles in SHF physiology process of cashmere goats through miRNA mediated pathways along with directly or indirectly interaction with its target proteins. The promoter methylation of m6A-circHECA host gene (HECA) most likely was implicated in its expression inhibition in SHFs of cashmere goats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective was to investigate the effects of dietary benzoic acid (BA) on nitrogen (N) balance, urinary pH, slurry pH, and odorous compounds in feces and slurry of pigs. METHODS Twelve barrows with an initial body weight of 56.2±2.6 kg were individually housed in metabolism crates. The animals were allocated to a replicated 6×4 incomplete Latin square design with 12 animals, 6 experimental diets, and 4 periods, resulting in 8 observations per treatment. The basal diet consisted mainly of corn, soybean meal, and rapeseed meal. Benzoic acid was supplemented to the basal diet at 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, or 2.5% at the expense of corn starch. Each period consisted of a 4-day adaptation period and a 24-h collection period for slurry, followed by a 4-day collection period for feces and urine. On day 5, feces and urine were collected for 24 h and mixed to obtain slurry samples. RESULTS The daily digested N linearly increased (p<0.05) with increasing BA supplementation. Supplemental BA lowered urinary pH (p<0.001) and slurry pH (p<0.05) in a linear and quadratic manner. In the fecal samples, the concentrations of acetate, propionate, butyrate, and skatole linearly decreased (p<0.05) with supplemental BA. In the slurry samples, the concentrations of butyrate, isovalerate, and skatole linearly decreased (p<0.05) by supplemental BA. CONCLUSION In conclusion, supplemental benzoic acid has the potential to improve nitrogen digestion in a dose-dependent manner for pigs. Additionally, dietary benzoic acid lowers urinary pH, slurry pH, and concentrations of odorous compounds in pig feces and slurry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite the considerable body of research on the effects of heat stress coupled with water scarcity (either through restriction or deprivation) on goats, aimed at enhancing their welfare, there remains a notable gap in the literature regarding the subsequent period following water restoration, during which the cumulative impact is fully alleviated. In response to this gap, we propose a strategy grounded in the assessment of body-thermal status to improve the welfare of heat-stressed and water-deprived goats. Specifically, our strategy seeks to determine the minimally required recovery interval necessary to completely mitigate the residual effects of water deprivation endured for a duration of 72 hours. METHODS Eight healthy Aardi bucks, aged 10 months and weighing 30 kg, were subjected to three distinct stages: euhydration, dehydration, and rehydration. Each stage spanned for 72 hours except for the rehydration stage, which was left unrestricted. Various meteorological, biophysiological, and thermophysiological measurements were subsequently recorded. RESULTS Exposure of heat-stressed goats, as indicated by the temperature-humidity index values, to a 72 hours deprivation period resulted in noticeable (p<0.05) alterations in their biophysiological (daily feed intake, body weight, and feces water content) and thermophysiological responses (core, rectal, skin, and surface temperatures, respiratory and heart rates, internal, external, and total body-thermal gradients, heat tolerance and adaptability coefficients, heterothermial total body-heat storage, and total water conservation). Remarkably, our findings demonstrate that all assessed variables, whether measured or estimated, returned to their baseline euhydration levels within 10 days of commencing the rehydration phase. CONCLUSION In order to improve the welfare of heat-stressed and 72 hours water-deprived goats, it is imperative to allow a recovery period of no less than 10 days following the restoration of water access prior to initiating any subsequent experiments involving these animals. Such experiments, addressing these critical aspects, serve to advance our understanding of goat welfare and obviously hold promise for contributing to future food security and economic viability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The remarkable adaptability to the environment, high growth rate, meat with good taste and aroma, and ornamental appearance of the Pradu Hang Dam (PDH) and Samae Dam (SD) chickens make them valuable for improvement of poultry production to enhance food security. However, despite their close phenotypic similarity, distinct classification of PDH and SD chickens remains controversial. Thus, this study aimed to clarify genetic origins and variation between PDH and SD chickens, genetic diversity and structures of PDH and SD chickens. METHODS This study analyzed 5 populations of PDH and 2 populations of SD chickens using 28 microsatellite markers and compared with those of other indigenous and local chicken breeds using Thailand's "The Siam Chicken Bioresource Project" database. RESULTS Considerably high genetic variability was observed within PDH (370 total alleles; 4.086±0.312 alleles/locus) and SD chickens (179 total alleles; 3.607±0.349 alleles/locus). A partial overlap of gene pools was observed between SD chickens from the Department of Livestock, Uthai Thani (SD1) and PDH chickens, suggesting a potentially close relationship between the two chicken breeds. A gene pool that partially overlapped with that of the red junglefowl was observed in the SD chicken population from the Sanhawat Farm Uthai Thani population (SD2). Distinct subclusters were observed within SD chickens, indicating the possibility that genetic differentiation occurred early in the process of establishment of SD chickens. CONCLUSION These findings could offer valuable insights into genetic verification of Thai local chicken breeds and their sustainable conservation and utilization.

Abstract
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), an enteric coronavirus, induces severe vomiting and acute watery diarrhea in unweaned piglets. The pig industry has suffered tremendous financial losses due to the high mortality rate of piglets caused by PEDV. Consequently, a simple and rapid on-site diagnostic technology is crucial for preventing and controlling PEDV. This study established a detection method for PEDV using recombinase-aided amplification (RAA) and Pyrococcus furiosus Argonaute (PfAgo), which can detect 100 copies of PEDV without cross-reactivity with other pathogens. The entire reaction of RAA and PfAgo to detect PEDV does not require sophisticated instruments, and the reaction results can be observed with the naked eye. Overall, this integrated RAA-PfAgo cleavage assay is a practical tool for accurately and quickly detecting PEDV. KEY POINTS: • PfAgo has the potential to serve as a viable molecular diagnostic tool for the detection and diagnosis of viral genomes • The RAA-PfAgo detection technique has a remarkable level of sensitivity and specificity • The RAA-PfAgo detection system can identify PEDV without needing advanced equipment.

Abstract
As COVID-19 has shown, pandemics and outbreaks of emerging infections such as Zika, Nipah, monkeypox and antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, especially emerging zoonotic diseases, continue to occur and may even be increasing in Southeast Asia. In addition, these infections often result from environmental changes and human behaviour. Overall, public health surveillance to identify gaps in the literature and early warning signs are essential in this region. A systematic review investigated the prevalence of emerging zoonotic diseases over 11 years from 2011 to 2022 in Southeast Asia to understand the status of emerging zoonotic diseases, as well as to provide necessary actions for disease control and prevention in the region. During the 2011-2022 period, studies on pigs, poultry, ruminants, companion animals and wildlife in Southeast Asia were reviewed thoroughly to assess the quality of reporting items for inclusion in the systematic review. The review was performed on 26 studies of pigs, 6 studies of poultry, 21 studies of ruminants, 28 studies of companion animals and 25 studies of wildlife in Southeast Asia, which provide a snapshot of the prevalence of the emerging zoonotic disease across the country. The findings from the review showed that emerging zoonotic diseases were prevalent across the region and identified a few zoonotic diseases associated with poultry, mainly stemming from Cambodia and Vietnam, as high priority in Southeast Asia.Clinical relevance: Appropriate prevention and control measures should be taken to mitigate the emerging zoonotic diseases in Southeast Asia.

Abstract
Knowledge of amoxicillin (AMX) pharmacokinetics (PK) and tissue residues in fish, which is necessary for prudent drug use, remains limited. The study aimed to explore the PK characteristics of AMX in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) reared at 25 and 30 °C as well as to determine optimal dosages and drug withdrawal time (WDT). In the PK investigation, the fish received a single dose of 40 mg/kg AMX via oral gavage, and the optimal dosage was determined by the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic approach. In the tissue residue study, the fish were orally gavaged with 40 mg/kg/day AMX once daily for 5 days and the WDT was established by the linear regression analysis. The results revealed the temperature-dependent drug elimination; the clearance relative to bioavailability (CL/F) and elimination half-life at 30 °C (0.180 L/kg/h and 6.06 h, respectively) were about twice those at 25 °C (0.090 L/kg/h and 10.49 h, respectively). The optimal dosages at the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2 μg/mL were 10.97 (25 °C) and 41.03 (30 °C) mg/kg/day, respectively. Finally, following the multiple oral administration, the muscle/skin residue of AMX on day 1 after the last dosing at 25 and 30 °C were 548 and 264 ng/g, respectively. The average tissue residues were depleted below the maximum residue limits (MRL) of 50 μg/kg on day 5 (25 °C) and 3 (30 °C), respectively, and the WDT were 6 and 4 days when rearing at 25 and 30 °C, respectively. This knowledge serves as a practical guideline for responsible use of AMX in treating bacterial diseases in Nile tilapia aquaculture.

Abstract
Physicochemical quality, fatty acids, volatile compounds and shelf-life profiles of the longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle of three game species: impala, mountain reedbuck and springbok harvested from a private game estate were measured. Average live weight at slaughter that ranged from 28 to 36 kg was included in the study. The carcass weights were recorded 24 h after slaughter. The longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle was sampled for meat analyses. Impala and springbok LTL had higher (P ≤ 0.05) pH24 and cooking loss values than the mountain reedbuck. In addition, the springbok had more tender (P ≤ 0.05) meat than the impala and mountain reedbuck. The mountain reedbuck and springbok had higher (P ≤ 0.05) proportions of oleic acid, total monounsaturated fatty acids (FA), linoleic acid, omega (n)-6 polyunsaturated FA, and alpha-linolenic acid compared to impala. During retail display, redness and chroma decreased over time, while yellowness and hue showed an upward trend for all species (P ≤ 0.05). It was observed that species affected meat quality, total proportions of fatty acids and volatile compounds.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to identify bioactive oligosaccharides and peptides in the cooking water of chickpeas and common beans, known as aquafaba. The oligosaccharides stachyose, raffinose and verbascose were quantified by high-performance anion-exchange chromatography; 78 and 67 additional oligosaccharides were identified in chickpea and common bean aquafaba, respectively, by LC-MS/MS. Chickpea aquafaba uniquely harbored ciceritol and other methyl-inositol-containing oligosaccharides. In prebiotic growth assays, chickpea aquafaba oligosaccharides were differentially utilized, promoting growth of Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 20016 and Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis ATCC 15697, but not Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG. Dimethyl labeling, along with LC-MS/MS, effectively differentiated α- and γ-glutamyl peptides, revealing the presence of several γ-glutamyl peptides known to possess kokumi and anti-inflammatory activities, including γ-Glu-Phe and γ-Glu-Tyr in chickpeas aquafaba and γ-Glu-S-methyl-Cys and γ-Glu-Leu in beans aquafaba. This work uncovered unique bioactive peptides and oligosaccharides in aquafaba, helping promote its valorization, food system sustainability, and future health-promoting claims.

Abstract
Macaques (Macaca spp.) are reported in human-wildlife interaction in anthropogenic areas. The management of human-macaque interactions (HMI) requires an understanding of various perspectives and knowledge. One Health (OH) is a transdisciplinary approach to address the well-being and health of animals, humans, and ecosystems, which supports sustainable management through its three pillars: economy, ecology, and society. Thus, the OH approach could be applied to HMI management. To explore the HMI management within the context of the OH approach, we examined articles related to the management of HMI from 2013 to 2022 following the systematic review by PRISMA guidelines. Ninety-four publications were included in the study. Then, we extracted information on HMI framing, management activities, species, and location and categorized HMI framings and management activities into themes of three OH domains and three pillars of sustainability. We noticed an underrepresentation of the society and economy pillars in HMI management and the ecosystem health domain was the least explored in both the HMI and management activities. When we connected publications addressing all three pillars with OH domains in management activities, the number focused on ecosystem health (3/13) remained limited. The most frequently reported HMI theme was "crop feeding"(n=42) and management activities were "HMI management" (n=42). Most publications lacked any form of evaluation of the HMI management. The challenges to better consider ecosystem health in the HMI and to promote participatory governance present an opportunity to apply the OH approach in wildlife conservation and management.

Abstract
The Region of Central Macedonia (RCM) in Northern Greece recorded the highest number of human West Nile virus (WNV) infections in Greece, despite considerable local mosquito control actions. We examined spatial patterns and associations of mosquito levels, infected mosquito levels, and WNV human cases (WNVhc) across the municipalities of this region over the period 2010-2023 and linked it with climatic characteristics. We combined novel entomological and available epidemiological and climate data for the RCM, aggregated at the municipality level and used Local and Global Moran's I index to assess spatial associations of mosquito levels, infected mosquito levels, and WNVhc. We identified areas with strong interdependencies between adjacent municipalities in the Western part of the region. Furthermore, we employed a Generalized Linear Mixed Model to first, identify the factors driving the observed levels of mosquitoes, infected mosquitoes and WNVhc and second, estimate the influence of climatic features on the observed levels. This modeling approach indicates a strong dependence of the mosquito levels on the temperatures in winter and spring and the total precipitation in early spring, while virus circulation relies on the temperatures of late spring and summer. Our findings highlight the significant influence of climatic factors on mosquito populations (∼60 % explained variance) and the incidence of WNV human cases (∼40 % explained variance), while the unexplained ∼40 % of the variance suggests that targeted interventions and enhanced surveillance in identified hot-spots can enhance public health response.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the differences between productive and reproductive performance traits of sexually precocious and non-sexually precocious Nellore heifers and to evaluate the genetic correlation of sexual precocity with traits of economic importance. For this purpose, 300,000 Nellore heifers were evaluated for reproductive traits: heifer pregnancy (HP) at 14 (HP14), 18 (HP18), and 24 (HP24) months; heifer rebreeding (HR); number of progenies up to 53 months (NP53); and probability of the cow remaining in the herd until 76 months with at least 3 progenies (Stay). The growth-related traits evaluated included female yearling weight (YW); average daily gain from weaning to yearling (ADGW-Y); weight at maturity (MW); weaning weight of first progeny (WWprog); and female visual scores at yearling for conformation (Conf), precocity (Prec) and muscling (Musc). The effects of female YW and ADGW-Y in six categories on HP14, HP18, and HP24 were analyzed using Generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). Furthermore, a linear mixed model was used to evaluate the impact of HP on WWprog, MW, and reproductive performance (NP53 and Stay). Genetic correlations of HP evaluated in different months with growth and reproductive traits were estimated using a bivariate animal model. Precocious heifers (HP14) were lighter for YW and MW but had greater ADGW-Y than HP18 and HP24. The probability for HP14, HP18, and HP24 increased as the classes of YW and ADGW-Y increased. However, heifers weighing more than 326 kg had a slight reduction in the probability of becoming pregnant at HP14 and HP18. Precocious heifers (HP14 and HP18) produced their first progeny by 3 % lighter than HP24, although they had a greater NP53. Precocious heifers at 18 months (HP18) were 3 % and 6.8 % more likely to remain in the herd than HP14 and HP24 heifers, respectively. Genetic correlations between growth traits (WW, YW, ADGW-Y, and MW) and heifer pregnancy (HP14, HP18, and HP24) ranged from weak (rg = 0.27 ± 0.05) to moderate (rg = -0.47 ± 0.07). The genetic correlation between HR and HP was stronger for HP24 (0.75) against HP14 (0.58) and HP18 (0.64). Although, the genetic correlation between NP53 and Stay with HP14 was higher (rg = 0.53 and 0.45) than those observed for HP18 (rg = 0.46 and 0.38) and HP24 (rg = 0.35 and 0.39). The genetic correlation estimates between HP and visual scores were moderate and favorable for HP14. Selecting HP14 is beneficial for production systems because it increases the NP53 during the productive life without compromising heifer productivity or reproductive performance. However, attention should be given to improving the HR of heifers who become pregnant early.

Abstract
Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) have been a critical threat to swine health since 1987 due to its high mutation rate and substantial economic loss over half a billion dollar in USA. The rapid mutation rate of PRRSV presents a significant challenge in developing an effective vaccine. Even though surveillance and intervention studies have recently (2019) unveiled utilization of PRRSV glycoprotein 5 (GP5; encoded by ORF5 gene) to induce immunogenic reaction and production of neutralizing antibodies in porcine populations, the future viral generations can accrue escape mutations. In this study we identify 63 porcine-PRRSV protein-protein interactions which play primary or ancillary roles in viral entry and infection. Using genome-proteome annotation, protein structure prediction, multiple docking experiments, and binding energy calculations, we identified a list of 75 epitope locations on PRRSV proteins crucial for infection. Additionally, using machine learning-based diffusion model, we designed 56 stable immunogen peptides that contain one or more of these epitopes with their native tertiary structures stabilized through optimized N- and C-terminus flank sequences and interspersed with appropriate linker regions. Our workflow successfully identified numerous known interactions and predicted several novel PRRSV-porcine interactions. By leveraging the structural and sequence insights, this study paves the way for more effective, high-avidity, multi-valent PRRSV vaccines, and leveraging neural networks for immunogen design.

Abstract
With the advancement in the egg industry sector, egg quality has assumed great significance in certain countries. Enhancements in the nutritional value of eggs may have direct affirmative consequences for daily nutrient intake and therefore for human health. Thus, affirmative improvement in egg quality boosts consumer preferences for eggs. Also, the improvement in eggshell quality can avoid the disposal of broken eggs and consequently economic losses. Therefore, poultry nutrition and mineral supplements have a significant impact on egg quality. Minerals are crucial in poultry feed for a number of biological processes, including catalytic, physiologic, and structural processes. For instance, they contribute to the biological processes necessary for forming and developing eggshells. To produce high-quality eggs for sale, diets must therefore contain the right amount of minerals. This review aims to highlight the role of both organic and inorganic minerals in improving egg quality, in addition to reviewing the interactions of mineral supplements with intestinal microbiota and subsequent effects on the egg quality.

Abstract
A priority to facilitate the application of lipofection to generate genetically modified porcine embryos and animals will be the use of zona pellucida (ZP)-intact oocytes and zygotes. Recently, our group produced genetically modified embryos by lipofection of ZP-intact oocytes during in vitro fertilization (IVF). This study investigates the effect of two commercial lipofection reagents, Lipofectamine 3000 and Lipofectamine CRISPRMAX, on embryo development and mutation efficiency in ZP-intact porcine oocytes. We compared these reagents with the electroporation method and a control group using two sgRNAs targeting the CAPN3 and CD163 genes. The detrimental effects on cleavage rates were observed in both lipofection treatments compared to the control and electroporated groups. However, blastocyst rates were higher in the Lipofectamine 3000 group than in the electroporated group for both genes. Mutation parameters varied by target gene, with Lipofectamine 3000 achieving higher mutation rates for CD163, while all groups were similar for the CAPN3 gene. Overall efficiency was similar for both lipofectamines, confirming their feasibility for use. In addition, we evaluated the effect of coincubation time (4, 8, and 24 h) on IVF outcomes, embryo development, and mutation parameters. Results indicated that an 8-h coincubation period optimized fertilization and mutation efficiency without significant toxic effects. This study demonstrates that lipofection with either Lipofectamine 3000 or CRISPRMAX during IVF is an effective method for generating genetically modified porcine embryos without the need for specialized equipment or trained personnel, with efficiencies similar to or greater than electroporation. This study also highlights the importance of optimizing reagent selection and coincubation times. There is no difference between Lipofectamine 3000 and CRISPRMAXTM in terms of embryo development and mutation efficiency, and under our experimental conditions, the optimal coincubation time with lipofectamine is 8 h.

Abstract
Modern livestock production systems are characterized by a greater focus on intensification, involving managing larger numbers of animals to achieve higher productive efficiency and animal health and welfare within herds. Therefore, animal breeding programs need to be strategically designed to select animals that can effectively enhance production performance and animal welfare across a range of environmental conditions. Thus, this review summarizes the main methodologies used for assessing the levels of genotype-by-environment interaction (G × E) in cattle populations. In addition, we explored the importance of integrating genomic and phenotypic information to quantify and account for G × E in breeding programs. An overview of the structure of cattle breeding programs is provided to give insights into the potential outcomes and challenges faced when considering G × E to optimize genetic gains in breeding programs. The role of nutrigenomics and its impact on gene expression related to metabolism in cattle are also discussed, along with an examination of current research findings and their potential implications for future research and practical applications. Out of the 116 studies examined, 60 and 56 focused on beef and dairy cattle, respectively. A total of 83.62% of these studies reported genetic correlations across environmental gradients below 0.80, indicating the presence of G × E. For beef cattle, 69.33%, 24%, 2.67%, 2.67%, and 1.33% of the studies evaluated growth, reproduction, carcass and meat quality, survival, and feed efficiency traits, respectively. By contrast, G × E research in dairy cattle populations predominantly focused on milk yield and milk composition (79.36% of the studies), followed by reproduction and fertility (19.05%), and survival (1.59%) traits. The importance of G × E becomes particularly evident when considering complex traits such as heat tolerance, disease resistance, reproductive performance, and feed efficiency, as highlighted in this review. Genomic models provide a valuable avenue for studying these traits in greater depth, allowing for the identification of candidate genes and metabolic pathways associated with animal fitness, adaptation, and environmental efficiency. Nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics are emerging fields that require extensive investigation to maximize our understanding of gene-nutrient interactions. By studying various transcription factors, we can potentially improve animal metabolism, improving performance, health, and quality of products such as meat and milk.
