Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The effects of gastric acid on the hardness, topographic, and colorimetric properties of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramics (ZLSs) for dental restorations remain unknown. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of simulated gastric acid exposure on the microhardness, surface roughness, color stability, and relative translucency of ZLSs. MATERIAL AND METHODS Two pressable ZLSs (VITA AMBRIA, VA and Celtra Press, CP) and 2 machinable ZLSs (VITA Suprinity, VS and Celtra Duo, CD)(n=64) were randomly allocated to artificial saliva (control) or gastric juice immersion groups simulating 10 and 20 years of clinical exposure. Microhardness (Hv) was measured with a Vickers hardness device, and surface roughness (Sa) was recorded with an optical profilometer. The color stability (ΔE00) and relative translucency parameter (RTP) were measured with a spectrophotometer. Data for Hv, Sa, and RTP were analyzed by repeated 2-way ANOVA, and data for ΔE00 were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA. Post hoc comparisons were obtained from Tukey HSD and Student t tests (α=.05). RESULTS Machinable ZLSs exhibited greater Hv after the simulated gastric acid challenge than pressable ZLSs. Sa was significantly impacted by material type (P=.001), storage media (P=.050), and their interaction (P<.001). ΔE00 was significantly affected by the type of simulated aging media (P<.001). After 20 years of simulated gastric acid aging, all ZLS materials surpassed the ΔE00 perceptibility threshold but did not exceed the ΔE00 acceptability threshold. VS displayed significantly lower RTP than other ZLS materials at all time points (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS The topographic and colorimetric characteristics of ZLS were significantly altered by exposure to simulated gastric acid.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diseases of the periodontal tissues including gingivitis and periodontitis can affect up to 90% and 50% of the population respectively. These conditions are multifactorial inflammatory conditions involving a dysbiotic biofilm that, if left untreated, can lead to the destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth and have significant systemic implications, specifically on cardiovascular health. The elevation of inflammatory markers, particularly high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), are strongly associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). HsCRP as well as other inflammatory markers can be detected in blood samples as early as 21 days after ceasing toothbrushing, due to the immune response to stagnant oral biofilm. The most effective way to ensure oral biofilm cannot remain on oral tissues, thus preventing periodontitis and reducing inflammatory CVD risk, is with good oral hygiene. The primary aim of this study is to assess whether individualised oral hygiene instruction (OHI) partnered with a digital oral health education (DOHE) package can improve the oral health of patients living with CVD. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A total of 165 participants will be recruited from the Westmead and Blacktown Mt Druitt cardiac rehabilitation out-patient clinics into this dual centre, single blind, parallel design, randomised controlled trial. A baseline oral health clinical examination will be completed, followed by a self-report questionnaire before they are randomised in a 1:1:1 ratio into one of 3 arms as follows: individualised OHI partnered with DOHE (Group A), (Group B) DOHE only (Group B), and control/usual care (no oral health education) (Group C). Groups will have their intervention repeated at the 6-week follow-up. After completing the 12-week follow-up, Group B and Group C will receive tailored OHI. Group C will also receive the DOHE package. The primary outcome is the change in approximal plaque index score between baseline and 6-week follow up. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study has been approved by the Western Sydney Local Health District Human Ethics Committee 2023/ETH00516. Abstract
Pulp necrosis is the most common complication following dental trauma and is often associated with apical periodontitis. The management of these teeth is challenging in terms of large root canals, open apices, thin dentinal walls, and short roots. Over decades the conventional treatment for these teeth was calcium hydroxide apexification, a time-consuming procedure despite high success rates. Subsequently after the introduction of mineral trioxide aggregate and hydraulic calcium silicate materials single visit apical plug procedures became increasingly practiced with comparable success rates to the conventional apexification. The search continued afterward for a clinical procedure that may stimulate further root development and apical closure to avoid the long-term complication of root fracture after apexification. Regenerative procedures using stem cells derived from the apical papilla and blood clots as scaffolds were then introduced for the management of immature teeth, with variable protocols and success rates. This review will cover the evidence available and current position of regenerative endodontic procedures in traumatized immature teeth with apical periodontitis, in terms of clinical protocols, outcome, and potential prognostic factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor oral and dental health due to oral dysbiosis during pregnancy increases the risk for negative pregnancy outcomes. Communicating the importance of oral health is therefore essential in reducing the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Professional guidance could substantially support women's positive perception of their own competence. Information on oral health should be provided by healthcare professionals such as midwives, obstetricians and dentists. The aim of this study was to assess the needs, wishes and preferences of pregnant women in Germany, regarding interprofessional collaboration and guidance on oral health during pregnancy. METHODS Sources of information, preferences regarding information supply as well as the need for interprofessional collaboration of involved healthcare professions were investigated in six online focus groups with pregnant women. In addition, three expert interviews with a midwife, an obstetrician and a dentist were conducted. The focus groups and interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis according to Kuckartz. RESULTS 25 pregnant women participated in focus groups. Pregnant women in all trimesters, aged 23 to 38 years, were included. Many women did not receive any or received insufficient information on oral health during pregnancy and wished for more consistent and written information from all involved healthcare providers. The extent of oral health counselling women received, heavily relied on their personal initiative and many would have appreciated learning about the scientific connection between oral health and pregnancy outcomes. An overall uncertainty about the timing and safety of a dental visit during pregnancy was identified. Interviews with experts provided additional insights into the working conditions of the involved healthcare professionals in counselling and emphasised the need for improved training on oral health during pregnancy in their respective professional education as well as thematic billing options in relation to this topic. CONCLUSION Guidance of women on oral health during pregnancy appears to be insufficient. Providing information adapted to the needs, wishes and preferences of women during pregnancy as well as the implementation of this topic in the education of involved healthcare professionals could contribute to an improved prenatal care for pregnant women and subsequently a reduced risk of negative pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assess whether the independent variables (IV) such as number of MIH-affected molars, MIH severity, past caries experience, visible plaque index (VPI), gingival bleeding index (GBI), age, and gender affect the presence of caries lesion (DMF_s) in first permanent molars, considering or not atypical restoration in MIH-affected molars as a previous caries lesion. METHODS A sample of 476 schoolchildren, aged 6-10 years, were evaluated for MIH and caries diagnosis, using the Severity Scoring System (MIH-SSS) and the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS), respectively. From the ICDAS, the DF-s/ D-s and df-s were calculated. The Zero-inflated Negative Binomial Regression was used to evaluate the impact of the IV on the dependent variable, considering or not the restorative component in MIH-affected molars. RESULTS When the presence of caries was evaluated with the restorative component, age, MIH severity and past caries experience had a significant impact on the dependent variable (R2 = 0.176). Without the restorative component in MIH-affected molars, only age and past caries experience were statistically significant (R2 = 0.167). CONCLUSION Since in the case of MIH teeth restoration may be attributed to post-eruptive breakdown rather than previous caries lesions, in the present study MIH did not influence the presence of caries lesions in the MIH-affected molars showing that restoration is not an adequate parameter for measuring the historical occurrence of caries. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The first permanent molars may not necessarily be at an increased risk of caries due to MIH if the etiological factors for caries development are effectively managed.

Abstract
PURPOSE This comprehensive review aims to provide a unique clinical perspective on the latest advances and ongoing boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) trials for various cancers. METHODS We critically analyzed clinical data from BNCT trials for head and neck cancer, glioblastoma, melanoma, meningioma, breast cancer, and liver tumors. We investigated differences in tumor responses and normal tissue toxicities among trials and discussed potential contributing factors. We also identified the limitations of early BNCT trials and proposed strategies to optimize future trial design. RESULTS BNCT has shown promising results in treating head and neck cancer, with high response rates and improved survival in patients with recurrent disease. In glioblastoma, BNCT combined with surgery and chemotherapy has demonstrated survival benefits compared to standard treatments. BNCT has also been successfully used for recurrent high-grade meningiomas and shows potential for melanomas, extramammary Paget's disease, and liver tumors. However, differences in tumor responses and toxicities were observed among trials, potentially attributable to variations in treatment protocols, patient characteristics, and evaluation methods. CONCLUSIONS BNCT is a promising targeted radiotherapy for various cancers. Further optimization and well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to establish its efficacy and safety. Future studies should focus on standardizing treatment protocols and addressing limitations to guide clinical decision-making and research priorities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Service delivery of post-treatment surveillance in head and neck cancer (HNC) varies across institutions in Australia. To better understand current practices and develop protocols that maximize service capacity or incorporate emerging technologies, especially in under-resourced regional and remote communities, it is important to obtain the perspectives of clinicians that regularly manage patients with HNC. DESIGN This cross-sectional study utilized an online survey distributed via email to specialists recruited from HNC-associated networks across Australia. The survey captured information on current practices and explored clinician perspectives towards re-designing the current surveillance model to incorporate telehealth or patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics while open-ended survey comments were analyzed using a content analysis approach. RESULTS Forty participants completed the survey (25 surgeons, 9 medical oncologists, 5 radiation oncologists and 1 oral medicine specialist). Most clinicians used either institution-specific guidelines (44%) or National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines (39%), with the remaining 17% using surveillance intervals based on patient symptoms. Following treatment, 53% of participants imaged patients only when there was clinical suspicion of recurrence or new symptoms. Planned surveillance imaging was conducted at 6 or 12-monthly intervals based on the HNC subtype. Fifty-seven percent of clinicians were open to redesigning the surveillance model, specifically in low-risk patients who did not require nasoendoscopic examination. Seventy-one percent had concerns regarding the feasibility of telehealth appointments, citing disparities in digital health equity. Additionally, 61% felt PROMs are currently underutilized and were open to incorporating HNC-specific PROMS into surveillance. Open-ended responses indicated that within the current surveillance model, "fragmented service provision" and "administration issues" were significantly impacting on timing of care. CONCLUSION Surveyed HNC clinicians feel that current post-treatment surveillance can be fragmented and potentially lead to delayed care. They are open to incorporating PROMS to assist in surveillance scheduling, especially in low-risk patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries remains prevalent among children in Bhutan, despite an increasing number of oral health professionals (OHPs). Insights into caries preventive practices among OHPs can identify areas for capacity building. AIM This cross-sectional descriptive study assessed the knowledge, attitude and practice of caries prevention in children among OHPs in Bhutan. DESIGN A self-administered online questionnaire was sent to all active registered OHPs. RESULTS The respondents included 73 dentists and 61 dental hygienists (88% response rate) with a mean experience of 8.4 ± 7.1 years. Many practitioners rarely saw children; most of them, however, exhibited a positive attitude towards caries prevention in children, yet lacked knowledge and practice, especially in younger children. Caries risk factors were not all recognized, and assessment was not practised. Many forms of fluoride were available, but their efficacy was underestimated. Fluoridated toothpaste was underutilized in younger children. Preventive practice relied mainly on giving advice. The most common limitations on preventive practice were the unavailability of materials and treatment prioritized over prevention. CONCLUSION Caries prevention in Bhutanese children requires a systematic approach in the oral healthcare system and further education of OHPs. Proactive strategies, time management and efficient distribution of preventive materials could promote better practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the lack of an ideal endodontic irrigant on the market, this study evaluates the antimicrobial potential of a formulated solution of 2'-fucosyllactose and lacto-N-neotetraose against E. faecalis within infected root canals, and explores any associated impacts related to the duration of irrigation. METHODS 32 single-rooted teeth extracted for periodontal reasons were infected with Enterococcus faecalis, and subsequently subjected to endodontic treatment with two different irrigation systems: sodium hypochlorite or a solution of 2'-fucosyllactose and lacto-N-neotetraose. These samples were then incubated in sterile culture media at 37 °C to observe microbial activity through turbidity. The culture broth of each individual sample was assessed as positive or negative by observing the turbidity or lack of turbidity in the culture at the time of evaluation. RESULTS the analysis of the results obtained from the comparison of groups irrigated with sodium hypochlorite or a solution of 2'-fucosyllactose and lacto-N-neotetraose demonstrates that the case solution has no bactericidal effect against E. faecalis inoculated in the endodontic system. CONCLUSIONS the HMOs used in this study do not have a bactericidal effect on E. faecalis inoculated in an endodontic system.

Abstract
AIM To compare the effects of Cervical Access Cavity (CervAC) and Traditional Access Cavity (TradAC) on root canal preparation, root canal filling, and fracture resistance in mandibular incisors. METHODOLOGY Twenty recently extracted and intact mandibular incisors were initially scanned using a micro-CT device. The specimens were anatomically matched to create two groups (n = 10). A wedge-shaped non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) was created on the buccal aspect of all teeth using a double-faced segmented diamond disc. In group 1, a TradAC was prepared, whilst in group 2, access was created through the simulated NCCL using a round diamond bur 1012. After root canal preparation with Rotate instruments sizes 15/0.04, 20/0.04, and 25/0.04, the teeth were scanned again and evaluated for root canal volume and surface area, static voxels, volume of removed dental tissue, and dentine thickness. After that, the root canals were filled using the single-cone technique, teeth were restored with composite resin, and subsequently rescanned to calculate the volume of filling materials and voids. Then, the restored teeth were subjected to fracture resistance tests using a universal testing machine. Statistical comparisons between groups were performed with the Mann-Whitney test or the Student's t-test, with a statistical significance level of 5%. RESULTS Statistical comparisons indicated no significant differences between groups in terms of root canal volume, surface area, static voxels, removed root dentine, root canal filling volume, percentage of voids, or fracture resistance load (p > .05). Conversely, teeth prepared with TradAC showed a significantly higher percentage of dental tissue removed from the crown (p = .001) and a greater volume of filling material remnants in the pulp chamber (p < .001) compared to the CervAC group. A significantly lower percentage reduction in dentine thickness was observed only on the mesial aspect of root at Level 1 in TradAC group (p = .008). CONCLUSIONS CervAC can be considered a viable alternative approach in the presence of NCCL in mandibular incisors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Internet has become an indispensable source of health-related information. However, several studies have shown there to be a lack of quality control for webpages related to disability. Specifically, available content concerning Down syndrome (DS) and dentistry is limited and of dubious quality. OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to assess the quality of online content in Spanish and Portuguese on dental care for individuals with DS. METHODS A simultaneous search in Google and Bing using the terms "Down syndrome" and "odontology/dentist/dental treatment" in Spanish and Portuguese was conducted in seven Ibero-American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, and Portugal). The first 100 consecutive pages of results from the three combinations of terms in each of the search engines were accessed and selected by applying conventional exclusion criteria. The selected pages were classified according to their authorship, specificity and dissemination potential. The quality of the online content was assessed using the DISCERN questionnaire and the Questionnaire to Evaluate Health Web Sites According to European Criteria (QEEC). The presence of the Health On Net (HON) and Accredited Medical Website (AMW) seals was also assessed. RESULTS The mean DISCERN score was 2.51 ± 0.85 and 2.57 ± 0.86 for the Spanish and Portuguese webpages, respectively. The mean readability score was 3.43 ± 1.26 and 3.25 ± 1.08 for the Spanish and Portuguese webpages, respectively. None of the selected webpages presented the HONcode or AMW trust seals. CONCLUSIONS The content available online in Spanish and Portuguese regarding Down syndrome and dentistry is scarce and of highly questionable quality.

Abstract
Nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary files used in root canal treatments experience fatigue and shear damage due to the complex curved geometries and operating conditions encountered within the root canal. This can lead to premature file fracture, causing severe complications. A comprehensive understanding of how different factors contribute to file damage is crucial for improving their functional life. This study investigates the combined effects of root canal curvature radius, file canal curvature, and rotational speed on the fatigue life and failure modes of NiTi endodontic files through an integrated computational and experimental approach. Advanced finite element simulations precisely replicating the dynamic motion of files inside curved canal geometries were conducted. Critical stress/strain values were extracted and incorporated into empirical fatigue models to predict the functional life of endodontic files. Extensive experiments with files rotated inside artificial curved canals at various canal curvatures and speeds provided validation. Increasing the canal curvature beyond 60∘ and shorter curvature radii below 5 mm dramatically reduced the functional life of the endodontic file, especially at rotational speeds over 360 rpm. The Coffin-Manson fatigue model based on strain amplitude showed the closest agreement with experiments. Shear stresses dominated damage at low canal curvatures, while the combined shear-fatigue loading effects were prominent at higher canal curvatures. This conclusive study elucidates how operational parameters like canal curvature radii, canal curvature, and rotational speed synergistically influence the fatigue damage processes in NiTi files. The findings offer valuable guidelines to optimize these factors, significantly extending the functional life of endodontic files and reducing the risk of intra-operative failures. The validated computational approach provides a powerful tool for virtual testing and estimation of the functional life of the new file designs before manufacturing.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study evaluates adverse events (AEs) in dentomaxillofacial radiology (DMFR) in Finland, including their quantity, nature, and outcomes. It also compares reporting activity between public and private healthcare organizations, as they share same legal obligations to report AEs. Two-thirds of dental images are taken in public, the rest in private healthcare. METHODS In Finland, radiation-related AEs are reported to the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK). We categorized DMFR-related AEs by nature, outcome, and imaging modality. We also submitted a questionnaire to STUK to gather information on their observations and remarks made during inspections of establishments providing dental imaging services. RESULTS During 2012-2022, STUK received reports of 1343 DMFR-related AEs, mostly causing patient harm (92.9%) leading almost always to excessive radiation doses (99.7%). Private healthcare reported most AEs (65.2%), with municipal institutions reporting the remainder (34.8%). Intraoral-related AEs (20.0%) slightly outnumbered panoramic-related ones (18.7%), but the majority (56.7%) didn't specify the imaging modality. CBCT-related incidents were least reported (4.5%). During STUK's inspections, remarks mostly concerned deficiencies in practical quality assurance (31.3%) or technical quality assurance (32.9%). CONCLUSION DMFR-related AEs may be underreported despite legal obligations, with most stemming from human error, highlighting the need to enhance patient safety culture. There's a notable reporting gap between private and public healthcare providers relative to the number of dental radiographs conducted. Organizational deficiencies in practical and technical quality assurance underscore the importance of ongoing education, as well as monitoring by STUK. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Enhancing patient safety culture in dentistry, including dentomaxillofacial radiology, demands customized multiprofessional development, as unaltered patient safety procedures from medicine and secondary care may not align with dentistry's requirements.

Abstract
Acrylic resins are widely used as the main components in removable orthodontic appliances. However, poor oral hygiene and maintenance of orthodontic appliances provide a suitable environment for the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, strontium-modified phosphate-based glass (Sr-PBG) was added to orthodontic acrylic resin at 0% (control), 3.75%, 7.5%, and 15% by weight to evaluate the surface and physicochemical properties of the novel material and its in vitro antifungal effect against Candida albicans (C. albicans). Surface microhardness and contact angle did not vary between the control and 3.75% Sr-PBG groups (p > 0.05), and the flexural strength was lower in the experimental groups than in the control group (p < 0.05), but no difference was found with Sr-PBG content (p > 0.05). All experimental groups showed an antifungal effect at 24 and 48 h compared to that in the control group (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that 3.75% Sr-PBG exhibits antifungal effects against C. albicans along with suitable physicochemical properties, which may help to minimize the risk of adverse effects associated with harmful microbial living on removable orthodontic appliances and promote the use of various materials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental students' personalities are strongly correlated with their didactic and clinical performances. With the significant changes in the social environment in the past decades, students' personalities may also change dramatically. Additionally, with the increasing number of international students admitted into US dental programs, educators must pay attention to the potential personality differences between domestic and international students. BACKGROUND A systematic review focusing on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality types of dental students was conducted with 11 literature databases following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline. The quality assessment of each included article was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute Prevalence Critical Appraisal Tool. Meta-analyses were conducted for each personality type within the United States in the past 50 years, and in each country in the past 20 years. RESULTS Eighteen articles (17 reports) were included after the eligibility assessment. The longitudinal trends within the United States showed the predominant two personality types have changed from Extraversion, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging (ESFJ) and Extraversion, Sensing, Thinking, and Judging (ESTJ) to ESTJ and Introversion, Sensing, Thinking, and Judging (ISTJ) during the past 50 years. When comparing different countries, the United States, China, Korea, and Iran have the same two dominant personality types (ESTJ and ISTJ) but not the Philippines (Extraversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving and Introversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving). However, there are large variations in the prevalence of other personality types. CONCLUSION There have been constant changes in the predominant personalities of dental students over the years. Additionally, understanding the diversity of personality types within the United States as well as among different countries could serve as the foundation for further improvements in teaching strategies and student support services.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess perceptions and actions taken by Finnish dental professionals in suspected cases of child physical abuse (CPA) and to describe changes over 10 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data collected from two child abuse and neglect (CAN) surveys among Finnish dental professionals, working in public health care, covering suspicions of CPA and actions taken as well as training on CPA issues, were compared. The chi-squared (χ2) test was used to analyze associations. RESULTS In total, 625 (2008) and 1,025 (2019) questionnaires were completed. Respondents reported that they suspected CPA more frequently in 2008 than in 2019 (21.0% vs. 8.7%, p < 0.001). Out of all respondents, 1.1% had reported their concern to the police in 2019. Worries about the report's negative consequences to the child at home (44.5% vs. 56.4%, p < 0.001) and to the informer (30.2% vs. 36.3%, p = 0.016) increased between the surveys. The proportion of respondents with previous training on CPA issues increased between the surveys (5.9% vs. 36.4%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Recognition of CPA was low and decreased over the years. Furthermore, mandatory reporting to the police was low. Additional education on issues related to CPA is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High precision intra-oral scans, coupled with advanced software, enable virtual bracket removal (VBR) from digital models. VBR allows the delivery of retainers and clear aligners promptly following debonding, thus reducing the patients' appointments and minimizing the likelihood of tooth movement. The objective of this study was to compare the enamel surface before bonding and after VBR using three different Computer-aided design (CAD) software and to compare their accuracy. METHODS Maxillary scans of 20 participants starting orthodontic treatment were selected for inclusion in the study, who exhibited mild to moderate crowding and required bonding of brackets on the labial surface of permanent maxillary teeth (from the maxillary left first molar to the maxillary right first molar). Two intra-oral scans were conducted on the same day, before bonding and immediately after bonding using CEREC Omnicam (Sirona Dental Systems, Bensheim, Germany). The virtual removal of the brackets from the post-bonding models was performed using OrthoAnalyzer (3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark), Meshmixer (Autodesk, San Rafael, Calif, USA), and EasyRx (LLC, Atlanta, GA, USA) software. The models that underwent VBR were superimposed on the pre-bonding models by Medit Link App (Medit, Seoul, South Korea) using surface-based registration. The changes in the enamel surface following VBR using the three software packages were quantified using the Medit Link App. RESULTS There was a significant difference among the 3Shape, Meshmixer, and EasyRx software in tooth surface change following VBR. Specifically, EasyRx exhibited lower levels of accuracy compared to the other two VBR software programs (p<.001, p<.001). A significant difference in enamel surface change was observed between tooth segments across all software groups, in both incisors and molars, with VBR of the molars exhibiting the lowest level of accuracy (3Shape p=.002, Meshmixer p<.001, EasyRx p<.001). Regarding the direction of tooth surface changes following VBR, it was observed that all three groups exhibited a significant increase in the percentage of inadequate bracket removal across all teeth segments. CONCLUSIONS 3Shape and Meshmixer manual VBR software were found to be more accurate than EasyRx automated software, however, the differences were minimal and clinically insignificant.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Laryngeal cancers account for one-third of all head and neck cancers. We aimed to report the incidence trends of laryngeal cancer over 2000-2020 in the United States (US), by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and histological subtypes. METHODS Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 22 database were used to identify patients with laryngeal cancer based on the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, version 3. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) for laryngeal cancer, adjusted for reporting delays, were calculated. The Joinpoint Regression Program was then utilized to determine annual percent changes (APCs) and average annual percent changes (AAPCs) in the trends. The analysis excluded data from 2020 to prevent potential bias related to the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS A total of 104,991 cases of laryngeal cancer were identified in the US from 2000 to 2019. Squamous cell carcinoma was the predominant subtype, accounting for 94.53% of cases. Above 73.20% occurred among non-Hispanic whites, with the highest incidence observed among individuals aged 55-69 years (46.71%). The ASIRs were 5.98 and 1.25 per 100,000 population for men and women, respectively. Over 2000-2019, there was a significant reduction in ASIRs for laryngeal cancer in both sexes. Non-Hispanic black men exhibited the highest ASIR (9.13 per 100,000) and the largest decline in the ASIRs over 2000-2019 (AAPC: -3.26%). CONCLUSIONS Laryngeal cancer incidence rates showed a decline from 2000 to 2019, in addition to 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional research is required to investigate risk factors and their influence on incidence rates of laryngeal cancer.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate how the presence of co-morbid conditions influenced antimicrobial usage as presumptive prophylaxis for suspected bacteremia in dogs and cats undergoing dental treatments at primary care veterinary clinics in the United States. In 2020, data was collected from 1076 veterinary clinics across 44 US states. A total of 681,541 general anesthesia dental procedures were conducted on 592,472 dogs and 89,069 cats. This revealed that systemic antimicrobials were administered in 8.8% of dog procedures and 7.8% of cat procedures in the absence of concurrent periodontal disease or extractions. Cefpodoxime, clindamycin, and amoxicillin-clavulanate were the most frequently used antimicrobials in dogs, while cefovecin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, and clindamycin topped the list for cats. Dogs with cardiovascular, hepato-renal, and endocrine co-morbidities, as well as those undergoing concurrent removal of cutaneous or subcutaneous neoplasia, displayed higher antimicrobial use. Similarly, cats with endocrine or hepato-renal disease, retroviral infection (i.e., feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)), and concurrent removal of cutaneous or subcutaneous neoplasia exhibited increased antimicrobial use. Dogs with hepato-renal abnormalities had longer treatment durations compared to those without (10.1 vs. 9.6 days). Conversely, cats with concurrent removal of cutaneous or subcutaneous neoplasia had shorter durations of treatment as compared to those that did not have this procedure performed (8.4 vs 9.2 days). The findings of this study underscore the necessity for further research and collaboration within the veterinary community to develop evidence-based guidelines, promoting responsible antimicrobial use, and advancing the field of veterinary dentistry for enhanced patient outcomes.

Abstract
Early diagnosis of head and neck cancer can improve therapeutic outcomes but remains a challenge. The blood proteome can comprise a key source of biomarkers that enable the early diagnosis and precision medicine in head and neck cancer, but blood protein biomarkers of head and neck cancer are not well delineated. Here we applied two-sample Mendelian randomization to a GWAS dataset of 1478 blood proteins and large dataset of head and neck cancer cases and controls to identify blood proteome traits associated with head and neck cancer. Multiple two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) methods were used to assess causal effects of the exposures, including: Inverse-variance weighted (IVW), Mendelian randomization-Egger method, Weight Median method, simple mode, weight mode. Sensitivity analysis was performed by using heterogeneity test, pleiotropy test and one-by-one exclusion test. Multivariable MR analyses were performed to assess the effects of obesity, diabetes mellitus, and smoking. A significant causal association between A Disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain-containing protein 23 (ADAM23) and head and neck cancer was noted. The sensitivity analysis indicated no significant bias. Multivariate analysis showed that the effect for ADAM23 remained significant after adjusting for the indirect effects of obesity, diabetes mellitus and smoking. In sum, this study showed a significant causal role of genetically dysregulated ADAM23 protein with head and neck cancer risk. The specific mechanisms underlying the role of ADAM23 in mediating head and neck cancer risk, and its role as a potential therapeutic target and biomarker, need further investigation.

Abstract
This technique presents a workflow that designs the custom surgical guide to cover a trephine bur using simple slicer software and three-dimensional (3D) printing to perform the semilunar technique. This method in autogenous bone grafting surgery harvests a thin layer of cortical bone in the donor site with a trephine bur. Its biologically favorable, round shape can be used as a shell to reconstruct the ridge with a 3D contour acceptable for future implant placement. A 78-year-old female patient required vertical and horizontal bone grafting for future implant placement due to the infection caused by the vertically fractured root of a premolar. The patient's cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) file was translated into a standard tessellation language (STL) file, and recipient and donor site models were created. Simulated surgery was done using the software first to detect any possible complications during surgery. The trephine bur planned for use in surgery was measured in necessary dimensions, and the values were added to create a guide for surgery in slicer software. Then, it was 3D-printed with a stereolithography (SLA) printer. After testing the fit of the guide, it was further tested on a fused filament fabrication (FFF) printed donor site model to check if the desired shape and size of the plate were acquired after harvest. Then, the plates were used for model surgery on the recipient site model. After no issues from the previous steps, the final patient surgery was approved and completed with success. This technique utilizes the SLA printing method to create the custom surgical guide for a trephine bur without using commercially available products. Moreover, it could be tested on FFF 3D-printed anatomical models to ensure its validity. With this innovative technique, clinicians can efficiently perform a semilunar technique, facilitating the surgery and improving patient care.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 calls for universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), which are crucial elements of health and well-being and fundamental for a life in dignity. Early childhood caries (ECC) is a preventable disease affecting health and quality of life of millions of young children worldwide. This scoping review aims to explore the connection between ECC and access to clean water and sanitation. METHODS This scoping review, registered on the Open Science Framework and following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, conducted a thorough search in databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Google Scholar, SciELO) and websites (via Google) in November 2023. The search, without date limitations, targeted studies in English and Spanish linking ECC to SDG6. Exclusions were made for studies solely focusing on ECC without a direct connection to clean water and sanitation. Descriptive statistics summarized the retrieved papers. RESULTS The initial search yielded 303 articles. After removing duplicates, 264 articles remained for title and abstract screening after which 244 were excluded and one report was added through citation searching. The 21 remaining articles underwent full text review. There were no studies on a direct association between access to clean water and sanitation and the prevalence of ECC. There were nine studies that showed indirect associations between ECC and access to clean water and sanitation through the links of: water and sanitation access as a marker for poverty (n = 1), water consumption as a feeding practice (n = 4), and the effectiveness of water fluoridation (n = 4). These were used to develop a conceptual model. CONCLUSIONS While it is conceivable that a direct link exists between ECC and access to clean water and sanitation, the available body of research only offers evidence of indirect associations. The exploration of potential pathways connecting water access to ECC warrants further investigation in future research.

Abstract
Intraoral scanners are widely used in a clinical setting for orthodontic treatments and tooth restorations, and are also useful for assessing dental wear and pathology progression. In this study, we assess the utility of using an intraoral scanner and associated software for quantifying dental tissue loss in non-human primates. An upper and lower second molar for 31 captive hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) were assessed for dental tissue loss progression, giving a total sample of 62 teeth. The animals are part of the Southwest National Primate Research Center and were all fed the same monkey-chow diet over their lifetimes. Two molds of each dentition were taken at either two- or three-year intervals, and the associated casts scanned using an intraoral scanner (Medit i700). Tissue loss was calculated in WearCompare by superimposition of the two scans followed by subtraction analysis. Four individuals had dental caries, and were assessed separately. The results demonstrate the reliability of these techniques in capturing tissue loss data, evidenced by the alignment consistency between scans, lack of erroneous tissue gain between scans, and uniformity of tissue loss patterns among individuals (e.g., functional cusps showing the highest degree of wear). The average loss per mm2 per year for all samples combined was 0.05 mm3 (0.04 mm3 for females and 0.08 mm3 for males). There was no significant difference in wear progression between upper and lower molars. Substantial variation in the amount of tissue loss among individuals was found, despite their uniform diet. These findings foster multiple avenues for future research, including the exploration of wear progression across dental crowns and arcades, correlation between different types of tissue loss (e.g., attrition, erosion, fractures, caries), interplay between tissue loss and microwear/topographic analysis, and the genetic underpinnings of tissue loss variation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Insulin resistance is associated with increased levels of IGF-1. IGF-1 has been shown to increase the risk of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. The Triglyceride-glucose index (TyG index) is a marker of insulin resistance. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between the TyG index and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SETTING Two tertiary care academic hospitals. METHODS The study included 53 patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (Group 1) and 48 healthy volunteers (Group 2). Laryngeal cancer patients were divided into two groups according to their stage. Stages I and II were named Group 1A, and Stages III and IV were called Group 1B. The TyG index was calculated as ln [fasting Triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting plasma glucose (mg/dL)/2]. The effect of the TyG index on laryngeal cancer was investigated on the parameters of sex, age, body mass index, and stage of the disease. RESULTS There were no significant differences in age, sex, and BMI between the groups. The TyG index of group 1 (4.75 ± 0.33) was significantly higher than that of group 2 (4.59 ± 0.15). The TyG index value of group 1B (4.84 ± 0.31) was significantly higher than both group 1A (4.61 ± 0.32) and group 2 (4.59 ± 0.15). There was no significant difference between the TyG index values of group 1A (4.61 ± 0.32) and group 2 (4.59 ± 0.15). CONCLUSION The TyG index may be a promising laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma biomarker. People with a higher TyG index may have a higher incidence of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and a higher risk of progression.

Abstract
Recognition of fluoride in water through the fluoride-induced Brönsted acid-base deprotonation reaction of an organic probe molecule is still a challenging task owing to the lower basicity of fluoride ions and the instability of the conjugate base of the probe molecules in aqueous medium. Herein, we report a complementary strategy in which the conjugate base of the studied bis-thiourea molecule in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) medium is simultaneously stabilized through chelation of the Ni(II) ion, which eventually facilitates the recognition of the fluoride ion in water samples. The recognition methodology is validated colorimetrically and electrochemically, and finally, the applicability of the approach is explored with water samples collected from fluoride-affected areas. The limit of detection value for the fluoride ion in water medium was found to be 0.2 and 0.3 ppm with UV-visible spectroscopy and differential pulse voltammetry measurements, respectively. The methodology is also demonstrated on a paper strip for the detection of the fluoride ion with the naked eye and a smartphone-based RGB sensor. The scheme has been shown to be effective in enhancing the aqueous fluoride recognition ability of the organic probe molecules with acidic hydrogen prone to deprotonation by the fluoride ion.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a disease of inflammation that affects the tissues supporting the periodontium. It is triggered by an immunological reaction of the gums to plaque, which leads to the destruction of periodontal attachment structures. Periodontitis is one of the most commonly recognized dental disorders in the world and a major factor in the loss of adult teeth. Scaling and root planing remain crucial for managing patients with persistent periodontitis. Nevertheless, exclusive reliance on mechanical interventions like periodontal surgery, extractions, and root planning is insufficient to halt the progression of periodontitis. In response to the problem of bacterial resistance, some researchers are committed to finding alternative therapies to antibiotics. In addition, some scholars focus on finding new materials to provide a powerful microenvironment for periodontal tissue regeneration and promote osteogenic repair. Nanoparticles possess distinct therapeutic qualities, including exceptional antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, immunomodulatory capacities, and the promotion of bone regeneration ability, which made them can be used for the treatment of periodontitis. However, there are many problems that limit the clinical translation of nanoparticles, such as toxic accumulation in cells, poor correlation between in vitro and in vivo, and poor animal-to-human transmissibility. In this paper, we review the present researches on nanoparticles in periodontitis treatment from the perspective of three main categories: inorganic nanoparticles, organic nanoparticles, and nanocomposites (including nanofibers, hydrogels, and membranes). The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive and recent update on nanoparticles-based therapies for periodontitis. The conclusion section summarizes the opportunities and challenges in the design and clinical translation of nanoparticles for the treatment of periodontitis.

Abstract
Background Disulfidptosis and ferroptosis are forms of programmed cell death that may be associated with the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Our study developed periodontitis-associated biomarkers combining disulfidptosis and ferroptosis, which provides a new perspective on the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Methods Firstly, we obtained the periodontitis dataset from public databases and found disulfidptosis- and ferroptosis-related differentially expressed transcripts based on the disulfidptosis and ferroptosis transcript sets. After that, transcripts that are tissue biomarkers for periodontitis were found using three machine learning methods. We also generated transcript subclusters from two periodontitis microarray datasets: GSE16134 and GSE23586. Furthermore, three transcripts with the best classification efficiency were further screened. Their expression and classification efficacy were validated using qRT-PCR. Finally, periodontal clinical indicators of 32 clinical patients were collected, and the correlation between three transcripts above and periodontal clinical indicators was analyzed. Results We identified six transcripts that are tissue biomarkers for periodontitis, the top three transcripts with the best classification, and delineated two expression patterns in periodontitis. Conclusions Our study found that disulfidptosis and ferroptosis were associated with immune responses and may involve periodontitis genesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare and analyze professional (P chart) and simple (S chart) clinical image evaluation charts for evaluating panoramic radiograph image quality. METHODS Ten evaluators assessed 285 clinical panoramic radiograph images. The evaluators were divided into oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMFR, n = 5) and general dentist (dentists not specializing in oral and maxillofacial radiology, G, n = 5) groups. For image evaluation, P and S charts provided by the Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology were used. Scores of items for each evaluation chart were used to compare the reliability, correlation, evaluation scores, evaluation time, and preference, and statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics. RESULTS The S chart showed similar levels of evaluation scores at shorter evaluation time, as compared to the P chart. In the results for each evaluation chart, all analyzed correlations were statistically significant. Total score, image density/contrast/sharpness, and overall image quality items showed a very high positive correlation in the P chart. While the overall range of correlation coefficients was relatively lower in the S chart than the P chart, the same items showed high correlation coefficients. In the preference evaluation, both the professional and generalist groups preferred the S chart. CONCLUSIONS A comparative analysis with the P chart, revisions, and upgrades are needed for the S chart items that showed low correlations in this study, such as artifacts, coverage area, and patient movement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to provide visualized knowledge maps to show the evolving trends and key focal points of Class III malocclusion research through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Class III malocclusion research published between 2000 and 2023 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer was utilized to count the citation and publication number of authors, institutions, countries and journals. Co-occurrence, co-citation, and cluster analyses and burst detection were conducted using CiteSpace. RESULTS A total of 3,682 publications on Class III malocclusion were included in the bibliometric analysis. During 2000-2023, both the annual publication count and citation frequency exhibited a gradual upward trajectory, with a noticeable surge in recent years. In terms of production and citation counts of Class III malocclusion research, the core journal is the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Furthermore, apart from the primary keyword 'Class III malocclusion', 'orthognathic surgery' was identified as keyword with the most frequency. The cluster analysis of cited references reveals that the research focal points have shifted to 'skeletal anchorage' and 'surgery-first approach'. Furthermore, the burst detection identified 'quality of life' as a potential research hotspot since it has recently gained increasing scholarly attention. CONCLUSIONS The current study provides scholars with the knowledge maps of evolving trends and prominent topics of Class III malocclusion research and a summary of research progress on various priorities during different periods. These findings are expected to provide a valuable guidance to facilitate the future research on Class III malocclusion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to develop an evidence-based clinical imaging guideline for teeth suspected with vertical root fractures. METHODS An adaptation methodology based on the Korean Clinical Imaging Guidelines (K-CIG) was used in the guideline development process. After searching for guidelines using major databases such as Ovid-Medline, Elsevier-Embase, National Guideline Clearinghouse, and Guideline International Network, as well as domestic databases such as KoreaMed, KMbase, and KoMGI, two reviewers analyzed the retrieved articles. The retrieved articles were included in this review using well-established inclusion criteria. RESULTS Twenty articles were identified through an online search, of which three were selected for guideline development. Based on these three guidelines, this study developed specific recommendations concerning the optimal imaging modality for diagnosing teeth suspected of vertical root fractures. CONCLUSIONS Periapical radiography is the preferred method for assessing teeth with mastication-related pain and suspected vertical root fractures. However, if intraoral radiographs do not provide sufficient information about root fractures, a small FOV CBCT may be considered. However, the use of CBCT in endodontically treated teeth is significantly constrained by the presence of artificial shading.

Abstract
PURPOSE This review aims to summarize the available technologies, material categories, and prosthodontic applications of additive manufacturing (AM) dental ceramics, evaluate the achievable accuracy and mechanical properties in comparison with current mainstream computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) subtractive manufacturing (SM) methods, and discuss future prospects and directions. STUDY SELECTION This paper is based on the latest reviews, state-of-the-art research, and existing ISO standards on AM technologies and prosthodontic applications of dental ceramics. PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were amongst the sources searched for narrative reviews. RESULTS Relatively few AM technologies are available and their applications are limited to crowns and fixed partial dentures. Although the accuracy and strength of AM dental ceramics are comparable to those of SM, they have the limitations of relatively inferior curved surface accuracy and low strength reliability. Furthermore, functionally graded additive manufacturing (FGAM), a potential direction for AM, enables the realization of biomimetic structures, such as natural teeth; however, specific studies are currently lacking. CONCLUSIONS AM dental ceramics are not sufficiently developed for large-scale clinical applications. However, with additional research, it may be possible for AM to replace SM as the mainstream manufacturing technology for ceramic restorations.

Abstract
Background Conscious sedation is an option in primary dental care for anxious patients or those undergoing extensive procedures. The objective of this retrospective service evaluation was to study the range of treatments delivered during sedation with intravenous midazolam, together with patient-reported experience measures.Methods Data from 100 consecutive patients treated under sedation at a single private dental practice were evaluated retrospectively. All patients were asked questions about their experience of sedation during a post-operative follow-up phone call.Results Over half of patients were treated under sedation due to anxiety. The mean dose of midazolam was 7.8 mg and the average treatment time was 1 hour 25 minutes. Of note, the average dose for the most extensive procedure - implant immediate full arch loading - was 11.7 mg; however, this equated to an average dose of 4.5 mg per hour. One patient needed supplemental oxygen; flumazenil was never required. Additionally, 91% of patients felt they had enough sedation, and 50% could remember the events of treatment.Conclusion With the British National Formulary recommending a maximum dose of 7.5 mg midazolam, this study demonstrates that this dose can be safely exceeded in dental treatment; therefore, a dose that accounts for the length of the procedure is a more valid approach. Moreover, patients undergoing a variety of dental treatments were satisfied with the amount of intravenous sedation received and age is not an absolute limit for sedating older people.

Abstract
Introduction Studies show that changes to dental incentive structures and treatment timings impact behaviour among UK general dental practitioners (GDP). Since 1980, the British Dental Association (BDA) has conducted panel inquiries to understand the time taken to complete dental treatments, the most recent of these being the 1999 Heathrow Timings study.Aims Given significant changes to the UK general dental service (GDS) since 1999, this research aims to gain a refreshed understanding of the time involved to complete clinical treatments in the UK and gain insight into working hours.Materials and methods This study adopted a mixed-method research design, adapted from the BDA's Heathrow Timings study. Averages for 34 adult and 12 children's treatments were found using an online survey and group discussion with 15 GDPs.Results Overall, GDPs worked 35.23 hours per week, at an hourly rate of £39.94. Comparison to the Heathrow study in 1999 shows an increase in time to deliver multiple treatments, including clinical examinations, root canals, extractions, composite fillings, porcelain veneers, acrylic full dentures and children's extractions.Conclusion Overall, this study provides a current and updated insight into dental treatment times performed by GDPs in the UK and highlights a decrease in working hours and real-term earnings of GDPs over the past 20 years.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental occlusion refers to the static and dynamic relationships that are established between the teeth of the two arches and is an important factor in the homeostasis of the dento-maxillary system. The objective of the present study was to compare two digital occlusal analysis systems: the T-Scan III system and the Medit I600 intraoral scanner. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was carried out on 20 students from the Faculty of Dental Medicine Craiova, whose dental occlusion was assessed with the T-Scan III system and with the Medit I600 intraoral scanner. Dental occlusion was assessed in the maximum intercuspation position, the edge-to-edge protrusion position, and the edge-to-edge position in right and left laterotrusion. The images of the 2D occlusal contact areas obtained by both methods were converted to .jpeg format and then transferred to Adobe Photoshop CS6 2021 (Adobe Systems, San Jose, CA, USA) for comparison. The recorded data were statistically processed. RESULTS Analyzing the data provided by the two digital occlusal analysis systems, it was found that the T-Scan III system provided data related to the amplitude of the occlusal forces, the surface on which they were distributed (the contact surface), the dynamics of the occlusal contacts, and the proportion in which they were distributed at the level of the two hemiarches, and the Medit I600 intraoral scanner performed an evaluation of the occlusal interface of the two arches, highlighting the extent of the contact areas with the degree of overlapping of the occlusal components. Although both methods of occlusal analysis recorded the highest values for the maximum intercuspation position, the results could not be compared. CONCLUSIONS The two digital systems provide different data in occlusal analysis. As the T-Scan III system is considered the gold standard for occlusal analysis, more studies are needed to understand the data provided by the Medit I600 intraoral scanner and their significance.

Abstract
PURPOSE This narrative review aimed to survey the clinical outcomes of laminate veneers (LVs), including their survival and success rates. STUDY SELECTION An electronic search of MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar from 2000 to April 2023 was conducted using the keywords "laminate" OR "veneer" OR "porcelain" OR "feldspathic" OR "lithium disilicate" OR "composite resin" OR "zirconia" OR "survival" OR "success." Case reports, case series, reviews, abstracts, in vitro studies, and observational studies were excluded. Five researchers independently evaluated the titles and abstracts of all identified studies. RESULTS A total of 55 studies were identified. None of the studies met the criteria for zirconia LVs. According to the studies in this review, LVs fabricated with feldspathic porcelain, leucite-reinforced glass ceramics (LRG), and lithium disilicate ceramics (LDS) exhibited satisfactory survival and success rates. Furthermore, hydrofluoric acid etching followed by silane priming of the surface of ceramic LVs is necessary for improved clinical outcomes. The extent of dentin exposure significantly decreases the success rate of ceramic LVs. An appropriate adhesive luting process is required to achieve the long-term success of ceramic LVs. Dentin exposure should be minimized or sealed during tooth preparation to achieve a reliable and durable bond between LVs and abutment teeth. CONCLUSIONS Based on this narrative review of the literature, the use of silica-based ceramic feldspathic porcelain, LRG, and LDS is recommended for LVs.

Abstract
Introduction This paper outlines a short pilot programme to assess the feasibility of an interdisciplinary model of involving student dental therapists in the management of maxillofacial trauma patients. It involved dental therapy students attending an oral and maxillofacial surgery trauma review clinic at a major trauma hospital in London, UK.Approach The small cohort of 15 second-year dental hygiene and therapy (BSc in Oral Health) students attended the trauma clinic once a week in pairs, over a period of six weeks, after which they completed a survey questionnaire.Findings No students had previous experience of dealing with trauma patients. The majority (81.8%) had learnt something by attending the clinic. Almost all (91.7%) had not thought previously about the importance of oral hygiene in maxillofacial trauma patients. By the end of the pilot programme, ten students (83.3%) felt that they had a role to play in the care of these trauma patients and they felt valued as members of the wider team.Conclusion These initial findings suggest that the scheme has potential for incorporation of maxillofacial trauma experience within the formal dental therapy curriculum. This would prepare them for future involvement in the management of maxillofacial trauma patients to promote oral health benefits and more widely, to work as a team member in interprofessional health care.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the retentive force and deformation of double Akers' polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) clasps on removable partial dentures (RPDs) with varying designs and undercut depths. METHODS Thirty double Akers' PEKK clasps with two different widths and heights (Groups I and II) were fabricated using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). Each design was further subdivided (n = 5) into three undercut depths (0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 mm). The retentive force of the clasps was measured after 10 years of clinical use (15,000 insertion/removal cycles), and the deformation of the clasp tips was analyzed before and after cycling. RESULTS Clasps with 0.50-mm and 0.75-mm undercut depths exhibited greater initial retentive forces (3.15-3.51 N) compared to those in the 0.25-mm undercut group (2.40-2.80 N). Group I maintained consistent retentive forces over the cycles (P = 0.345), whereas Group II showed declining forces after the initial use (P < 0.003). In both groups, the 0.50-mm undercut exhibited a greater retentive force than the 0.25-mm (P < 0.001 and P < 0.004, respectively), with no significant differences between the 0.50-mm and 0.75-mm undercut depths. Despite a lower initial retentive force, the 0.25-mm undercut showed less deformation and clasp tip wear. CONCLUSIONS The PEKK clasps did not exhibit significantly reduced retentive forces or permanent deformations after 15,000 fatigue cycles. These results suggest that the PEKK polymer displays superior mechanical properties as an esthetic clasp material, and clasps with 0.50-mm and 0.75-mm undercut depths are recommended for long-term clinical use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endodontic treatment is one of the main dental treatments to manage inflamed or infected root canal systems of teeth. The success of endodontic treatment principally depends on eradicating microorganisms in the root canal by chemo-mechanical debridement with irrigation solutions like sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). NaOCl has been used in concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 5.25%. This study determined the antimicrobial effectiveness of selected concentrations (0.5%, 1.0%, 2.6%, and 5.2%) of NaOCl in endodontic treatment. METHODS The study sites were the University of Ghana Dental School (UGDS) and Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR). Sixty infected single-rooted single-canal teeth were used. Before (S1) and after (S2), root canal samples during the endodontic treatment with the selected concentrations of NaOCl were examined via anaerobic and aerobic cultures. The isolates were identified using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). RESULTS All S1 samples were positive for cultivable bacteria. Fifty-three (53) different microbial species belonging to 20 different microbial genera were isolated. Streptococcus viridans was the most frequently isolated microbe. There were zero isolates in the root canals irrigated with 2.6% and 5.2% NaOCl. Two teeth had isolates in the groups irrigated with the lower concentrations (0.5% and 1.0%) of NaOCl. The persistent bacteria were one species each of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis, respectively. CONCLUSION Root canal treatments using chemo-mechanical preparation with the selected concentrations (0.5%, 1.0%, 2.6%, and 5.2%) of NaOCl were effective in significantly reducing the microbial load, and for the 5.2% and 2.6% concentrations, in eliminating all the microorganisms.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate whether depth-gauge burs in veneer preparations influence preparation depth in a randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial and whether inexperienced operators can perform adequate veneer preparations. METHODS Participants were 20 undergraduate dental students with no prior veneer preparation experience. The instruments used were the "Laminate Veneer System" (LVS), "Keramik-Veneers. de" (KVD), and a "Freehand" group (FH) for reference. All participants prepared three educational acrylic resin maxillae and three mandibular central incisors mounted in typodonts in patient simulators. The objectives were to achieve a preparation depth of 0.6 mm (tooth 11) and 0.4 mm (tooth 31). The sequences of the instruments used and prepared teeth were randomized. The measurements were performed using a laser triangulation coordinate-measuring machine. The data were stratified according to tooth location. RESULTS The preparation depths of both depth-gauge-instrument-groups LVS and KVD achieved the objectives significantly better than did the instruments from the "Freehand" group (P < 0.001). The differences between the depth gauge groups were insignificant, although the maximum preparation depths were smaller in the KVD group. Regarding the prepared teeth, the preparation depths in the mandibular incisors were lower, and the differences were smaller. CONCLUSIONS The use of special depth-gauge burs for initial veneer preparation leads to significantly lower preparation depths than "Freehand" preparations. The tapered instruments resulted in a lower incidence of extreme preparation depths. The inexperienced operators performed veneer preparation remarkably well.

Abstract
Head and neck cancer (HNC) represents a significant global health challenge, with squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) accounting for approximately 90% of all HNC cases. These malignancies, collectively referred to as head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), originate from the mucosal epithelium lining the larynx, pharynx, and oral cavity. The primary risk factors associated with HNSCC in economically disadvantaged nations have been chronic alcohol consumption and tobacco use. However, in more affluent countries, the landscape of HNSCC has shifted with the identification of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, particularly HPV-16, as a major risk factor, especially among nonsmokers. Understanding the evolving risk factors and the distinct biological behaviors of HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC is critical for developing targeted treatment strategies and improving patient outcomes in this complex and diverse group of cancers. Accurate diagnosis of HPV-positive HNSCC is essential for developing a comprehensive model that integrates the molecular characteristics, immune microenvironment, and clinical outcomes. The aim of this comprehensive review was to summarize the current knowledge and advances in the identification of DNA, RNA, and protein biomarkers in bodily fluids and tissues that have introduced new possibilities for minimally or non-invasive cancer diagnosis, monitoring, and assessment of therapeutic responses.

Abstract
Computer-aided implant surgery has undergone continuous development in recent years. In this study, active and passive systems of dynamic navigation were divided into active dynamic navigation system group and passive dynamic navigation system group (ADG and PDG), respectively. Active, passive and semi-active implant robots were divided into active robot group, passive robot group and semi-active robot group (ARG, PRG and SRG), respectively. Each group placed two implants (FDI tooth positions 31 and 36) in a model 12 times. The accuracy of 216 implants in 108 models were analysed. The coronal deviations of ADG, PDG, ARG, PRG and SRG were 0.85 ± 0.17 mm, 1.05 ± 0.42 mm, 0.29 ± 0.15 mm, 0.40 ± 0.16 mm and 0.33 ± 0.14 mm, respectively. The apical deviations of the five groups were 1.11 ± 0.23 mm, 1.07 ± 0.38 mm, 0.29 ± 0.15 mm, 0.50 ± 0.19 mm and 0.36 ± 0.16 mm, respectively. The axial deviations of the five groups were 1.78 ± 0.73°, 1.99 ± 1.20°, 0.61 ± 0.25°, 1.04 ± 0.37° and 0.42 ± 0.18°, respectively. The coronal, apical and axial deviations of ADG were higher than those of ARG, PRG and SRG (all P < 0.001). Similarly, the coronal, apical and axial deviations of PDG were higher than those of ARG, PRG, and SRG (all P < 0.001). Dynamic and robotic computer-aided implant surgery may show good implant accuracy in vitro. However, the accuracy and stability of implant robots are higher than those of dynamic navigation systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of conventional cigarette smoking (CS) and recent heated tobacco products (HTPs) on the surface roughness and color stability of different indirect restorative materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred disc-shaped samples were constructed of three different restorative CAD/CAM materials: lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD; Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein), zirconia (BruxZir® Zirconia, Glidewell, USA) and polyetheretherketone (BioHPP® bredent GmbH, Germany). Of the IPS e.max CAD and the Bruxzir samples, 20 samples were glazed, and 20 samples were polished, while the BioHPP samples were all polished according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fifty samples were subjected to conventional cigarette smoking (LM, Philip Morris International Inc., Egypt) (Groups: IPS e.max CAD_Glazed exposed to CS (LD_G_Cig), IPS e.max CAD_Polished exposed to CS (LD_P_Cig), Bruxzir_Glazed exposed to CS (Zr_G_Cig), Bruxzir _Polished exposed to CS (Zr_P_Cig) and BioHPP exposed to CS (PEEK_Cig) and fifty samples were exposed to heated tobacco product smoking (Heets, Russet selection, Philip Morris International Inc., Italy) (Groups: IPS e.max CAD_Glazed exposed to HTP (LD_G_HTP), IPS e.max CAD_Polished exposed to HTP (LD_P_HTP), Bruxzir_Glazed exposed to HTP (Zr_G_HTP), Bruxzir CAD_Polished exposed to HTP (Zr_P_HTP) and BioHPP exposed to HTP (PEEK_HTP).. Six hundred cigarettes/heets representing 30 days of medium smoking behavior (20 cigarettes/day) were used. Before and after exposure to smoke, the surface roughness of all the samples was measured using JITAI8101 surface roughness tester (Beijing Jitai Tech Detection Device Co., Ltd, China, and the color parameters were assessed using VITA Easyshade Advance 4.01 (VITA shade, VITA made, VITA). The data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA, paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The significance level was set at α < 0.05. The surface topography was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy to determine changes in the surface chemical composition. RESULTS Both types of smoking caused significant increases in the surface roughness of all the samples. There was a significant difference in color change between CS and HTP for all materials with different surface finish (P < 0.01) and zirconia had the greatest effect on color change (P < 0.001). In contrast, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) "BioHPP" had the least effect (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Exposure to different types of smoking induce changes in the surface topography and color of different esthetic restorative materials. Compared with HTP, conventional cigarette smoke has a greater effect on the surface roughness and color stability of esthetic restorative materials. The glazed surfaces showed less change in surface topography than did the polished surfaces. Zirconia showed better color stability when compared to polyetheretherketone (PEEK).

Abstract
Precious metal nanoparticles have been widely investigated due to their excellent activity shown in catalysis and sensing. However, how to prepare highly dispersed noble metal nanoparticles to improve the lifetime of catalysts and reduce the cost is still an urgent problem to be solved. In this study, a carbon-based carrier material was prepared by an expansion method and loaded with Pd or Ag nanoparticles on this carbon material to synthesize precious metal nanoparticle composites, which were characterized in detail. The results show that the nanoparticles prepared using this method exhibit superior dispersion. Under the synergistic effect of noble metal nanoparticles and porous carbon carriers, the composites exhibited excellent catalytic degradation of p-nitrophenol and showed excellent sensing performance in the modified hydrogen peroxide sensor electrode. This approach is highly informative for the preparation of nanocomposites in medical and environmental fields.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) affects 1 in 700 live births globally. Children born with CL/P and their families face various challenges throughout the child's development. Extant research is often limited by small numbers and single-centre data. The Cleft Collective, a national cohort study in the UK, aims to build a resource, available to collaborators across the globe, to understand causes, best treatments and long-term outcomes for those born with CL/P, ultimately seeking to enhance their quality of life through improved understanding and care. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A longitudinal prospective cohort study of children born with CL/P and their families. Recruitment occurs across the UK and started in November 2013. Recruitment will continue until September 2027 with an estimated final sample of 4822 children born with CL/P (1157 cleft lip including/excluding the alveolus; 2112 cleft palate only; 1042 unilateral cleft lip and palate and 511 bilateral cleft lip and palate). Biological samples are collected from all recruited members of the family. Parental and child questionnaires are collected at key time points throughout the child's development. Surgical data are collected at the time of surgical repair of the child's cleft. Consent is obtained to link to external data sources. Nested substudies can be hosted within the cohort. Regular engagement with participants takes place through birthday cards for the children, social media posts and newsletters. Patient and Public Involvement is conducted through the Cleft Lip And Palate Association and Cleft Collective Patient Consultation Group who provide insightful and essential guidance to the Cleft Collective throughout planning and conducting research. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The Cleft Collective was ethically approved by the National Research Ethics Service committee South West-Central Bristol (REC13/SW/0064). Parental informed consent is required for participation. Findings from the Cleft Collective are disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, newsletters and social media.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to explore the associations between triglyceride glucose (TyG) index-related obesity indices and periodontitis within the American population. METHODS This cross-sectional investigation utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for 2009-2014. The association between the TyG-waist-to-height ratio (TyG-WHtR), TyG-weight-adjusted-waist index (TyG-WWI), TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC), or TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI) and periodontitis was investigated utilizing multivariable logistic regression model, subgroup, and dose-response curve analyses. RESULTS This study enrolled 4,808 adult participants. Except for TyG-BMI, which did not exhibit a relationship with periodontitis, TyG-WHtR, [odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval (CI))] = 2.83 [1.58-5.10], P = 0.002], TyG-WWI [OR (95% CI) = 7.50 (3.06-18.34), P < 0.001], and TyG-WC [OR (95% CI) = 2.12 (1.23-3.64), P = 0.011] were all associated with periodontitis. Participants in the highest quartile displayed an elevated risk of periodontitis relative to their counterparts in the lowest quartile, as evidenced for TyG-WWI [OR (95% CI) = 1.72 (1.26-2.33), P = 0.001] and TyG-WC [OR (95% CI) = 1.50 (1.13-1.99), P = 0.009] in the full adjustment model. Subgroup analyses suggested more pronounced positive associations between these indices and periodontitis in participants who were < 60 years old, had a BMI ≥ 25, and did not have diabetes. The dose-response curve indicated linear responses in these associations. CONCLUSIONS This investigation identified a significant and stable association between TyG-WHtR, TyG-WWI, or TyG-WC and periodontitis, which implies a robust correlation between high insulin resistance and susceptibility to periodontitis in the American population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The meaning of the toothbrushing technique for the effectivity of toothbrushing in terms of plaque removal and parameters of gingivitis is unknown. This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS We searched MEDLINE (PubMed), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the Web of Science for RCTs that compared any self-applied manual toothbrushing technique to any other technique or control and assessed plaque after toothbrushing and gingivitis. Where intervention effects were recorded repeatedly, the last post-intervention assessment was treated as the primary outcome date (POD), and the assessment closest to the intervention as the secondary outcome date (SOD). Age restrictions were not imposed. Participants with fixed orthodontic appliances were excluded. The evidence was evaluated using the Confidence in Network Meta-Analyses (CINeMA) approach, which is based on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS Thirteen publications, including 15 studies, were identified. Ten studies assessing the Fones, Bass, and Scrub techniques provided data eligible for the NMA. The confidence rating of the evidence varied from very low to high in the case of plaque, and from very low to low in the case of gingivitis. Regarding PODs, Fones probably reduces plaque slightly compared with no training; the evidence is very uncertain that Fones may have little to no effect on gingivitis. Bass may result in little to no difference in plaque; the evidence that Bass may result in a slight increase in gingivitis is very uncertain. The evidence is very uncertain that Scrub may result in little to no difference in plaque at the SOD (no POD-data available) and that it may result in a slight increase in gingivitis. CONCLUSION There is limited evidence regarding the effects of toothbrushing techniques on plaque after brushing or gingivitis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the functions of the stomatognathic system in children with or without molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH). METHODS For this cross-sectional study, 72 children aged 6-12 years were recruited and divided in two groups: with MIH (G1) and without MIH (G2). T-SCAN was used to verify the distribution of occlusal contacts, gnathodynamometer to measure maximum molar bite force, and Iowa Oral Pressure Instrument (IOPI) to assess the strength of facial expression muscles. The t test and paired t test (p ≤ 0.05) were used for statistical comparisons. RESULTS The molars affected by MIH exhibited lower distribution of occlusal forces (p < 0.001) and lower maximum molar bite force (p < 0.05) compared to the molars in the control group. However, there was no difference between the MIH-affected sides compared to the unaffected side, nor between the molars affected by MIH and their antagonists (p > 0.05). There were no differences in the forces of the facial expression muscles between the groups. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that MIH significantly impacts occlusal force distribution and bite force, but not facial expression musculature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review was conducted to address the following research question: "What are the clinical consequences (outcome) of Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) (exposure) in children and adolescents (population/patient)?". MATERIAL AND METHODS After defining the strategy, a search was performed in different databases (MEDLINE via Pubmed, Cochrane Library, BBO, LILACS, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase) and Grey literature in August 2023. Cross-sectional observational studies that identified clinical consequences of MIH (dental caries, post-eruptive structural loss, atypical restorations, hypersensitivity and tooth extraction) were included. The risk of bias was assessed following the Joanna Briggs Institute protocol for cross-sectional studies. Meta-analyses were conducted for each outcome, taking into account the number of patients and teeth. The effect measure considered was the prevalence; random-effects model was adopted. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics and prediction intervals (PI). RESULTS A total of 903 studies were identified; 41 were selected for qualitative analysis and 38 for quantitative analysis. Twenty eight studies were classified as presenting uncertain risk of bias, 11 as low risk and 3 as high risk of bias. The prevalence levels, ranked from highest to lowest and considering the tooth and patient units, respectively, were: caries lesions (0.252 - 95% CI 0.158-0.375; 0.512 - 95% CI 0.385-0.639); hypersensitivity (0.286 - 95% CI 0.190-0.407; 0.417 - 95% CI 0.197-0.674), post-eruptive fracture (0.125 - 95% CI 0.099-0.158; 0.257 - 95% CI 0.145-0.412); atypical restorations (0.048 - 95% CI 0.030-0.077; 0.167 - 95% CI 0.096 - 0.274); tooth extraction (0.012 - 95% CI 0.007-0.019; 0.090 - 95% CI 0.019 - 0.331). All meta-analyses resulted in heterogeneity greater than 85%, with the exception of the outcome "tooth extraction" according to the tooth unit (I2 = 57.83). This heterogeneity may be attributed to factors such as differences in the location where the study was realized, the socioeconomic conditions of the studied population, the asymmetric nature of MIH, and patient age. CONCLUSION The most common consequences of MIH are caries lesions, hypersensitivity, and post-eruptive breakdown. (PROSPERO:CRD42020201410).

Abstract
The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between self-reported preventive and curative orientations of general dental practitioners (GDPs) and the oral healthcare services (OHS) they provided to patients under 18-years-old. And in addition, to determine which patient, GDP, and dental practice characteristics predicted the provision of preventive and curative care. GDPs in the Netherlands using dental software program Exquise (>2,000) were invited to participate in this study voluntarily. Participants completed a web-based questionnaire on characteristics of themselves, their dental practices, and on 20 hypothetical clinical situations concerning caries management. Based on their responses GDPS were classified for their preventive orientation, and their curative orientation. Data on the OHS provided to their young patients over the period 2013-2017 were automatically extracted from the patient files. Based on the annual frequency of provided care to regular patients over a period of 4 or 5 years, this was converted into 3 longitudinal care patterns regarding prevention and 3 longitudinal care patterns regarding curative care. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted with a multilevel approach to correct for dental practices. The 37 participating GDPs provided data for 16,229 young patients. There was not a significant relationship between self-reported preventive orientations and preventive care patterns. The self-reported middle curative orientation was a predictor of the care pattern 'curative treatment(s) in 1 year' (OR 1.23 compared to nu curative treatments; 95% CI 1.02-1.48). The self-reported high curative orientation was a predictor of 'curative treatments in several years' (OR 1.90; 95% CI 1.27-2.85). Common characteristics predicting (p<0.05) both regular preventive care and curative treatments in several years were patient related: age 4-9 and 10-12, low-income neighborhood, 5 years included in study. GDP and dental practice related predictors were: the GDP could fulfill the care demand by working overtime, small dental practice (≤2,000 patients), and practice policy on the provision of care to young patients. This showed that the variation in provided care was partly supplier-driven instead of patient-centered.
