The relative impact of toxic heavy metals (THMs) (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr)(VI), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb)) on the total environment: an overview

Nano-remediation of toxic heavy metal contamination: Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]

The inexorable industrialization and modern agricultural practices to meet the needs of the increasing population have polluted the environment with toxic heavy metals such as Cr(VI), Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb^2+, and Zn²⁺. Among the hazardous heavy metal(loid)s contamination in agricultural soil, water, and air, hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is the most virulent carcinogen. The metallurgic industries, tanneries, paint manufacturing, petroleum refineries are among various such human activities that discharge Cr(VI) into the environment. Various methods have been employed to reduce the concentration of Cr(VI) contamination with nano and bioremediation being the recent advancement to achieve recovery at low cost and higher efficiency. Bioremediation is the process of using biological sources such as plant extracts, microorganisms, and algae to reduce the heavy metals while the nano-remediation uses nanoparticles to adsorb heavy metals. In this review, we discuss the various activities that liberate Cr(VI). We then discuss the various conventional, nano-remediation, and bioremediation methods to keep Cr(VI) concentration in check and further discuss their efficiencies. We also discuss the mechanism of nano-remediation techniques for better insight into the process.

Insights of arsenic (III/V) adsorption and electrosorption mechanism onto multi synergistic (redox-photoelectrochemical-ROS) aluminum substituted copper ferrite impregnated rGO

The understanding of mechanistic insights in environmental remediation and mitigation systems is attracting larger attention, in recent days. Here in, aluminium substituted copper ferrite impregnated rGO hybrid (CAF-rGO) is verified to understand the adsorption/electrosorption mechanism of arsenic in aqueous systems. Near-surface study (XPS: As 3d, Cu 2p, Fe 2p, Al 2p, O 1s, C 1s) proposes redox, and ligand exchange reactions between contaminant, and CAF-rGO. Adsorption capacities are observed around 128.8 mg g^-1 [As(III)], 153.5 mg g^-1 [As(V)] with Freundlich model isotherms. Kinetics study follows the PSO model with influence of solar light (> 420 nm). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis in different molarity conditions observed with signals around +0.1 and -0.6 V confirm the redox abilities, and N₂/O₂ purged environments understood that electrosorption occurred through both reduction and sorption. Electrosorption study with pH variation shows the effect of protonation on the redox activity of individual arsenic species. Consistent signal around -0.6 ± 0.05 V in all the CV plots (i.e., Molarity, Environment, pH) recommends the usage of CAF-rGO for arsenic mitigation. Possible influence of photo-current (∼40 μA/cm² at ∼ 0 V) towards As(III/V) decontamination is understood though photoelectrochemical analysis. Impedance plot shows low-resistance and better diffusion of arsenic oxy-anions during light irradiation. Synergistic nature of CAF-rGO generates reactive oxygen species (i.e., ^●OH/^●O₂^-/₁O²) in mitigating highly toxic As(III) species is also detailed in the present work.

Elucidating the influence of environmentally relevant toxic metal mixture on molecular mechanisms involved in the development of neurodegenerative diseases: In silico toxicogenomic data-mining

This in silico toxicogenomic analysis aims to: (i) testify the hypothesis about the influence of the environmentally relevant toxic metals (lead, methylmercury (organic form of mercury), cadmium and arsenic) on molecular mechanisms involved in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's Disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) development; and (ii) demonstrate the capability of in silico toxicogenomic data-mining for distinguishing the probable mechanisms of mixture-induced toxic effects. The Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD; http://ctd. mdibl.org) and Cytoscape software were used as the main data-mining tools in this analysis. The results have shown that there were 7, 13 and 14 common genes for all the metals present in the mixture for each of the selected neurodegenerative disease (ND), respectively: ALS, PD and AD. Physical interactions (68.18%) were the most prominent interactions between the genes extracted for ALS, co-expression (60.85%) for PD and interactions predicted by the server (44.30%) for AD. SOD2 gene was noted as the mutual gene for all the selected ND. Oxidative stress, folate metabolism, vitamin B12, AGE-RAGE, apoptosis were noted as the key disrupted molecular pathways that contribute to the neurodegenerative disease's development. Gene ontology analysis revealed biological processes affected by the investigated mixture (glutathione metabolic process was listed as the most important for ALS, cellular response to toxic substance for PD, and neuron death for AD). Our results emphasize the role of oxidative stress, particularly SOD2, in neurodegeneration triggered by environmental toxic metal mixture and give a new insight into common molecular mechanisms involved in ALS, PD and AD pathology.

Screening maize (Zea mays L.) varieties with low accumulation of cadmium, arsenic, and lead in edible parts but high accumulation in other parts: a field plot experiment

To find maize varieties with both safe production and soil remediation, 11 maize varieties were planted in field soil which was combinedly polluted by cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb). The plant growth, accumulation, phytochemical forms, and translocation of Cd, As, and Pb in different tissues were examined. Furthermore, maize varieties with low metal accumulation in their edible parts but high accumulation in other parts were selected as remediation candidates and pollution-safe varieties. The results showed that the growth of varieties Yayu69, Longhuang2502, and Shennongyu10 were the least affected by heavy metals. The concentrations of Cd, As, and Pb in all of the tested maize grains met the national feed hygiene standards, and the grain concentrations of the three metals in Yayu69, Shengnongyu10, and Yunrui62 all met the national food safety standards. According to the extraction efficiency of Cd, As, and Pb and heavy metal concentrations in grains, four types of maize were classified as follows: (1) the first category was suitable for both soil remediation and safe production, including the varieties Yayu69 (Cd, Pb), Jinyi418 (As, Cd), and Shengnongyu10 (Pb); (2) the second category had a high concentration of metals in edible part but did not exceed the limiting value in national feed hygiene standards, and the metal extraction efficiency was also high, including Beiyu1521 (Cd) and Longhuang2502 (Cd, As, Pb); (3) the third category included heavy metal exclusion varieties with low metals accumulation, such as Yayu749 (Cd), Yunrui62 (As, Pb), and Yunrui8 (As); and (4) the fourth type covered risk maize varieties with food safety risks and unsuitable cultivation at sites polluted with toxic metals, including Chuangui1586 (Pb) and Enyu69 (As). The variety Yayu69 (a Cd/Pb low accumulator in grain) contained a low percentage of inorganic (FE) and water-soluble (FW) Cd (4%) and Pb (6%) in roots, respectively, but the percentage of FE and FW Cd and Pb in the variety Beiyu1521 (a Cd/Pb high accumulator in grain) was up to 29% and 13%. Our results provided a new perspective in applying maize varieties with different metal-accumulating ability in their different parts to achieve the remediation of metal-polluted soil and the sustainable development of agricultural production.

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in herbal medicinal products consumed in the Iranian market

Herbal medicines have been reported to contain many contaminants that are potential harmful to health. These include heavy metals, such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg). Therefore, this study aimed to measure the levels of Pb, Cd, As, and Hg in several orally administered herbal products available in the Iranian market. Fifteen products labeled (A-O) of different brands from three different production batches (n = 45) were purchased from traditional herbal medicine factories in Iran. Each sample was digested with nitric acid by the wet digestion method, and the resultant solutions were used to determine the concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, and Hg. These measurements were performed using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, graphite furnace atomic absorption, or cold vapor atomic absorption. The lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury contents in the investigated samples did not show significant levels that may be associated with toxicity. All four metals were present at concentrations below the limits recommended by the WHO (World Health Organization), American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), and Canadian standard, but in several herbal products, the concentrations of these trace elements exceeded the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). The concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, and Hg in commercially available herbal remedies were well below the acceptable intake recommended by global recommendations. Our findings revealed that at present, the amount of heavy metals in medicinal herbs processed at the level of supply by pharmacies licensed is favorable.

NLRP3 inflammasome mediated pyroptosis is involved in cadmium exposure-induced neuroinflammation through the IL-1β/IkB-α-NF-κB-NLRP3 feedback loop in swine

Cadmium (Cd) chloride, as widely distributed toxic environmental pollutants by using in industry, severely imperils animal and human health. Pyroptosis is a Cas1-dependent pro-inflammatory programmed cell death and involves in various types of diseases. Nevertheless, the mechanism of pyroptosis and Cd-induced neurotoxicity remains obscure. To investigate the specific molecular mechanisms of Cd-induced neurotoxicity, 10 weaned piglets were randomly divided into 2 groups treated with 0 and 20 mg/kg CdCl₂ in the diet for 40 days. The levels of pyroptosis, mitochondrial and inflammation-related genes were validated by qRT-PCR and WB in vivo. Our results revealed that Cd caused cerebral histopathology lesions, inducing cerebral pyroptosis and the mass generation of inflammatory cytokines, as indicated by the increased NLRP3 inflammasome activation (NLRP3, Cas1 and ASC) and the upregulation of inflammation factors IL-2, IL-6, IL-7 and inhibition of IL-10. Subsequently, further research indicated that Cd triggered pyroptosis via activating the TRAF6-IkB-α-NF-κB pathway, which interfered with the phosphorylation and ubiquitination of IkB-α. Furthermore, Cd caused mitochondrial dysfunction and fragmentation by inhibiting the AMPK-PGC-1α-NRF1/2 signaling pathway and reduced the expression of mitochondrial-related regulatory factors OPA1, TFAM and mtDNA, resulting in the increase of NLRP3 inflammasome. Besides, we found eight hub genes (IKK, IKB-α, NLRP3, TRAF6, NF-κB, AMPK, TNFα and PGC-1α), mainly related to the interaction between the NF-κB pathway and NLRP3 inflammasome. Overall, these results demonstrated that Cd could promote the IL-1β/IkB-α-NF-κB-NLRP3 inflammasome activation positive feedback loop to result in neuroinflammation in swine, which provided new insights in understanding Cd-induced toxicity.

Bio-sorption of toxic metals from industrial wastewater by algae strains Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris: Application of isotherm, kinetic models and process optimization

The present study evaluates the effect of an acidic treatment on the improvement of the percentage removal of toxic metal (%TM_rem) from wastewater by algae strains (Spirulina platensis (SP) and Chlorella vulgar (CV)) under different adsorbent dosages (0.2-2.5 g), a pH of (4-8) and contact time (5-100 min). The acidic treatment (Ac-T) altered the functional groups on the surface of algae promoting more electronegative groups and improved the %TM_rem of Al, Ni and Cu. Treated SP removed up to 95.0 ± 0.3% (Std. Dev = 0.24), 87.0 ± 0.2% (Std. Dev = 0.34)%, and 63.0 ± 0.3% (Std. Dev = 0.14) of Al, Ni, and Cu at the optimum pH of 5.5, 6.0, and, 7.0 and an adsorbent dosage of = 2.5 ± 0.1 g/L (Std. Dev = 0.14) g/L, respectively. Lower %TM_rem of 87.0% ± 0.2 (Std. Dev = 0.09), 79.1 ± 0.4% (Std. Dev = 0.08), and 80.0 ± 0.2% (Std. Dev = 0.04) were achieved with treated CV, respectively. The optimum operational conditions for maximum %TM_rem were determined at (C_algae = 4.8 ± 0.2 g_MNPs.L^-1, C_t = 88 ± 1, and pH = 6) using the response surface methodology (RSM). The adsorption of TMs on algae is endothermic, spontaneous, and follows Langmuir and second-order kinetics. Zeta potential measurements indicated that the adsorption mechanism between the toxic metal (TM) and algal strains is controlled by electrostatic interaction. As such, bio-sorption is a sustainable and efficient technology for the removal of TM from wastewater.

Scoping Review-The Association between Asthma and Environmental Chemicals

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide affecting all age groups from children to the elderly. In addition to other factors such as smoking, air pollution and atopy, some environmental chemicals are shown or suspected to increase the risk of asthma, exacerbate asthma symptoms and cause other respiratory symptoms. In this scoping review, we report environmental chemicals, prioritized for investigation in the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU), which are associated or possibly associated with asthma. The substance groups considered to cause asthma through specific sensitization include: diisocyanates, hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) and possibly p-phenylenediamine (p-PDA). In epidemiological studies, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organophosphate insecticides are associated with asthma, and phthalates, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), pyrethroid insecticides, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and lead are only potentially associated with asthma. As a conclusion, exposure to PAHs and some pesticides are associated with increased risk of asthma. Diisocyanates and Cr(VI) cause asthma with specific sensitization. For many environmental chemicals, current studies have provided contradicting results in relation to increased risk of asthma. Therefore, more research about exposure to environmental chemicals and risk of asthma is needed.

Chemical-Assisted Microbially Mediated Chromium (Cr) (VI) Reduction Under the Influence of Various Electron Donors, Redox Mediators, and Other Additives: An Outlook on Enhanced Cr(VI) Removal

Chromium (Cr) (VI) is a well-known toxin to all types of biological organisms. Over the past few decades, many investigators have employed numerous bioprocesses to neutralize the toxic effects of Cr(VI). One of the main process for its treatment is bioreduction into Cr(III). Key to this process is the ability of microbial enzymes, which facilitate the transfer of electrons into the high valence state of the metal that acts as an electron acceptor. Many underlying previous efforts have stressed on the use of different external organic and inorganic substances as electron donors to promote Cr(VI) reduction process by different microorganisms. The use of various redox mediators enabled electron transport facility for extracellular Cr(VI) reduction and accelerated the reaction. Also, many chemicals have employed diverse roles to improve the Cr(VI) reduction process in different microorganisms. The application of aforementioned materials at the contaminated systems has offered a variety of influence on Cr(VI) bioremediation by altering microbial community structures and functions and redox environment. The collective insights suggest that the knowledge of appropriate implementation of suitable nutrients can strongly inspire the Cr(VI) reduction rate and efficiency. However, a comprehensive information on such substances and their roles and biochemical pathways in different microorganisms remains elusive. In this regard, our review sheds light on the contributions of various chemicals as electron donors, redox mediators, cofactors, etc., on microbial Cr(VI) reduction for enhanced treatment practices.

The Double Face of Metals: The Intriguing Case of Chromium

Chromium (Cr) is a common element in the Earth’s crust. It may exist in different oxidation states, Cr(0), Cr(III) and Cr(VI), with Cr(III) and Cr(VI) being relatively stable and largely predominant. Chromium’s peculiarity is that its behavior relies on its valence state. Cr(III) is a trace element in humans and plays a major role in glucose and fat metabolism. The beneficial effects of Cr(III) in obesity and types 2 diabetes are known. It has been long considered an essential element, but now it has been reclassified as a nutritional supplement. On the other hand, Cr(VI) is a human carcinogen and exposure to it occurs both in occupational and environmental contexts. It induces also epigenetic effects on DNA, histone tails and microRNA; its toxicity seems to be related to its higher mobility in soil and swifter penetration through cell membranes than Cr(III). The microorganisms Acinetobacter sp. Cr1 and Pseudomonas sp. Cr13 have been suggested as a promising agent for bioremediation of Cr(VI). This review intends to underline the important role of Cr(III) for human health and the dangerousness of Cr(VI) as a toxic element. The dual and opposing roles of this metal make it particularly interesting. An overview of the recent literature is reported in support.

A review on metal nanozyme-based sensing of heavy metal ions: Challenges and future perspectives

Large scale mining, manufacturing industries, exploitation of underground water, depletion of groundwater level, and uncontrolled discharge of industrial wastes have caused severe heavy metal ion pollution to the environment throughout the world. Therefore, the rapid detection of such toxic metal ions is inevitable. However, conventional methods require sophisticated instruments and skilled manpower and are difficult to operate in on-field conditions. Recently, metal nanozyme-based assays have been found to have the potential as an alternative to conventional methods due to their portability, simplicity, and high sensitivity to detect metal ion concentration to as low as parts per trillion (ppt). Metal nanozyme-based systems for heavy metal ions enable rapid and cheap screening on the spot with a very simple instrument such as a UV-vis absorption spectrophotometer and therefore, are convenient for use in field operations, especially in remote parts of the world. The sensing mechanism of a nanozyme-based sensor is highly dependent on its surface properties and specific interactions with particular metal ion species. Such method often encounters selectivity issues, unlike natural enzyme-based assays. Therefore, in this review, we mainly focus our discussion on different types of target recognition and inhibition/enhancement mechanisms, and their responses toward the catalytic activity in the sensing of target metal ions, design strategies, challenges, and future perspectives.

Fluorescent multi-component polymer sensors for the sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+/Hg+ ions via dual mode fluorescence and colorimetry

Fluorescent multi-component polymers, which are sensitive and selective to Hg2+/Hg+ through fluorescence and colorimetry, were synthesized by the Heck coupling reaction.

Micro-Plasma Assisted Synthesis of ZnO Nanosheets for the Efficient Removal of Cr6+ from the Aqueous Solution

Herein, we report a micro-plasma assisted solvothermal synthesis and characterization of zinc oxide nanosheets (ZnO-NSs) and their application for the removal of Cr6+ ion from aqueous solution. The morphological investigations by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the high-density growth of nanosheets with the typical sizes in the range of 145.8–320.25 nm. The typical surface area of the synthesized ZnO-NSs, observed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), was found to be 948 m2/g. The synthesized ZnO-NSs were used as efficient absorbent for the removal of Cr6+ ion from aqueous solution. Various parameters such as pH, contact time, amount of adsorbate and adsorbent on the removal efficiency of Cr6+ ion was optimized and presented in this paper. At optimized conditions, the highest value for removal was 87.1% at pH = 2 while the calculated maximum adsorption capacity was ~87.37 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm data were found to be best fitted to Temkin adsorption isotherm and the adsorption process followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Furthermore, the toxicity of ZnO-NSs were also examined against fibroblast cells, which show favorable results and proved that it can be used for wastewater treatment.

Recent advances in environmentally benign hierarchical inorganic nano-adsorbents for the removal of poisonous metal ions in water: a review with mechanistic insight into toxicity and adsorption

Recent developments in nanoscience and technology have addressed many of the problems associated with water quality. Accordingly, using the technological outputs of the recent research on nanomaterials, the best solution for the purification of water is highlighted in this review. Herein, the main objective is to provide mechanistic insight into the synthesis of various inorganic nanoadsorbents and their adsorption chemistry for poisonous metal ions present in polluted water. Initially, the toxicity and carcinogenicity of As3+, Pb2+, Cr6+, Cd2+, and Hg2+ metal ions are highlighted. For the removal of these toxic ions, this review focuses on eco-friendly nanoadsorbents. The various preparation procedures utilized for the preparation of nanoadsorbents are briefly discussed. Generally, this is because of the adsorption capacity of nanoadsorbents depends on their morphology, shape, size, surface area, surface active sites, functional groups, and quantization effect. Also, due to the importance of their mechanism of action, the recent developments and challenges of novel nanoadsorbents such as metal oxides, core shell nanoparticles, magnetic nano ferrates, and functionalized core shell magnetic oxides and the processes for the treatment of water contaminated by toxic metal ions such as As3+, Pb2+, Cr6+, Cd2+, and Hg2+ are exclusively reviewed. Further, the adsorption efficiency of inorganic nanoadsorbents is also compared with that of activated carbon derived from various sources for all the above-mentioned metal ions.

Role of sulfur in combating arsenic stress through upregulation of important proteins, and in-silico analysis to study the interaction between phosphate transporter (PHO1), arsenic and phosphate in spinach

An adequate amount of Sulfur (S) is essential for proper plant growth and defence against abiotic stresses including metals and metalloids. Arsenic (As) contamination is increasing in agricultural soils rapidly due to anthropogenic activities. Sulfur deficiency and arsenic stress could be more harmful than these individual stresses alone. To understand the impact of S-deficiency and arsenic (31 ppm Na₃AsO₄ of soil) on ecophysiology, growth, inorganic phosphate level, and proteomic profile of spinach, the present study was conducted. Interaction of arsenic with phosphate transporters, phytochelatins, and glutathione was also analyzed in silico. Comparative 2D MS/MS proteomics helped in the identification of important proteins which might be the key players under S-deficiency and As stress. Upregulation and downregulation of 36 and 21 proteins under As stress; 19 and 36 proteins under S-deficiency; 38 and 31 proteins under combined stress, respectively was observed. A total, 87 proteins subjected to identification via MS/MS ion search were found to be associated with important plant functions. PHO1 abundance was highly influenced by As stress; hence an in-silico homology modeling based molecular docking was performed which indicated high interaction between PHO1 and As/phosphate. Varied proximity of arsenic with phosphate transporters, phytochelatin, and glutathione revealed these components as a potential target of As toxicity/detoxification in Spinach, reflecting sulfur as an important criterion for arsenic tolerance.

Mercury level in biological samples of dentists in Iran: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Exposure to mercury is an important risk to dentists health. The aim of the present study was to assess the pooled mean mercury level (MML) in the urine, blood, nail, and hair of Iranian dentists (IDs) through the meta-analysis technique. Comprehensive and systematic searches were performed in main local databases including SID, Magiran, Iran medex, and ISC as well as internationally available databases including Embase, PubMed and Scopus for all the relevant studies up to 2018. In order to prevent bias in this study and identify eligible studies, various steps of the study was performed independently by two researchers. Out of 13 studies in the meta-analysis process which included 1499 IDs, the mean of the mercury level in the urine, nail, and blood was estimated to be 6.29 (95% CI: 2.61-9.97, I-square: 62.7%, P: 0.006), 3.54 (95% CI: 2.81-4.28, I-square: 0.0%, P: 0.968), 11.20 (95% CI: 2.28-20.13, I-square: 59.9%, P: 0.082), respectively. The mean mercury level (MML) in the biological samples of IDs was higher than the standard of World Health Organization (WHO). So, in accordance with Article 10 of the European Union Regulations (EUR), in the context of the Minamata Convention (MC) on Dental Amalgam (DA), in order to avoid the dangers of mercury exposure in dentists, it is necessary for Iran and other countries to approve laws and to implement a national plan to reduce mercury levels and replace the appropriate materials.

Paper-based electroanalytical devices for stripping analysis of lead and cadmium in children's shoes

Children's shoes are potential sources of toxic heavy metals, especially for younger children. Electrochemical detection could be applied for effective stripping analysis of heavy metals (such as Cd and Pb). However, the substrates of working electrodes are still limited and it is not well known which property is critical. Herein ITO glass was used as the substrate and the working electrode was modified with carbon cement for stripping analysis of Cd and Pb. The electrochemical impedance spectra of the ITO modified electrodes suggested the connection between the resistance and the electrochemical responses of heavy metals in stripping analysis, depending on the dilution ratio of the carbon cement. After optimization, the ITO modified electrodes in paper-based analytical devices could be used to sensitively quantify Cd and Pb with the concentration ranging from 10 to 1000 ppb. The detection limit of Pb2+ could reach less than 1 ppb while that of Cd2+ could reach 5 ppb, depending on the pH value of the sample solution. The paper-based electroanalytical devices could be used to quantify the concentration of Cd and Pb in children's shoes. This study implied the impact of the electric conductivity of the electrode substrates on stripping analysis, which might help to find more materials for the fabrication of the working electrodes.

Facile integration of FeS and titanate nanotubes for efficient removal of total Cr from aqueous solution: Synergy in simultaneous reduction of Cr(VI) and adsorption of Cr(III)

In this study, a novel composite composed of iron monosulfide nanoparticles (FeS NPs) and titanate nanotubes (TNTs) was hydrothermally synthesized. Characterizations revealed the encapsulation and homogenous dispersion of FeS NPs into the interlayers of TNTs. Significant performance in removal of aqueous total Cr was acquired by efficient conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) on FeS and simultaneous adsorption of Cr(III) on TNTs. Moreover, the high activity of FeS-TNTs in reduction of Cr(VI) can maintain at high oxicity or alkalinity of its solution. The synergistic effect between FeS and TNTs was derived from sheltering of FeS NPs from their self-aggregation, O₂-oxidation and the affinity of Cr(III) to TNTs. The unique properties, e.g. the solid acidity, the hollow and interlayered configuration of TNTs played important roles in high activity, good stability and reusability of FeS-TNTs.

Differential impact of some metal(loid)s on oxidative stress, antioxidant system, sulfur compounds, and protein profile of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.)

Levels of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) are increasing in the soils worldwide. Such contaminants cause toxicity in the plant systems which adversely affects growth and productivity. The objective of the present investigation was to elucidate individual and combined effects of As, Cr, and Cu (100 μM each) stress in metal hyper-accumulator plant Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.), exposed for a week. The highest accumulation was in the roots and in decreasing order viz. Cu > As > Cr. The magnitude of oxidative stress was maximal in combined stress, followed by As, Cr, and then Cu stress. Glutathione in conjunction with glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase increased in all set of stress treatments, notably when exposed to Cr alone. In addition, the level of sulfur-rich compounds like cysteine, phytochelatins, and non-protein thiols increased under each stress indicating efficient coupling of the enzyme system and sulfur-containing compounds during stress conditions. The highest tolerance or growth index of plants was recorded for Cu. Protein profiling of leaf tissues showed modulation of protein patterns in each stress. Mediator of RNA polymerase II transcription subunit 1 isoform X1, RuBisCO (large subunit), and ribosomal protein S3 proteins were more abundant under Cr and Cu stress. Zinc finger A20/AN1 domain-containing stress-associated protein 5-like protein was more abundant under Cu stress. HSP (15.7 kDa) and autophagy protein 5-like were in higher abundance under As and combined stress. Our results suggest that Indian mustard has a differential mode of defense against a particular stressor at the level of protein expression profile.

Application of inorganic passivators reduced Cd contents in brown rice in oilseed rape-rice rotation under Cd contaminated soil

Immobilization of heavy metals by the application of chemical amendments is an eco-friendly, economical and effective method to remediate cadmium (Cd) -contaminated soils. Field experiments were conducted during 2016-2018 following oilseed rape-rice rotation with the application of inorganic passivators i.e., slaked lime (CaOH₂>95%) and sepiolite (SiO₂>50%, MgO>20%). The experimental treatments were comprised of: rice planting in winter fallow and without passivator (F-PA0); fallow with slaked lime (F-PA1); fallow with sepiolite (F-PA2); oilseed rape-rice rotation without passivator (R-PA0); rotation with slaked lime (R-PA1); and rotation with sepiolite (R-PA2). The slaked lime and sepiolite were applied after the harvest of rape at 2000 and 5000 kg ha^-1, respectively. Results revealed that the Cd contents were reduced by 47.44-49.03% in brown rice for F-PA2 and 9.54-42.66% in soil for R-PA2. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was decreased by 10.65-17.98%, the malondialdehyde (MDA) contents were reduced by 28.57% whereas the proline content was decreased by 32.61% under R-PA2. In addition, the filled grain percentage was improved by 6.87% (F-PA2) and 3.70% (R-PA1), respectively. Overall, rice sown after oilseed rape gave better yields than sown after fallow fields while application of slaked lime and sepiolite as passivator could be a potential management option to grow crops in metal polluted soils.

Simultaneous removal of chromate and arsenite by the immobilized Enterobacter bacterium in combination with chemical reagents

Simultaneous chromate [Cr(VI)] reduction and arsenite [As(III)] oxidation is a promising pretreatment process for Cr and As removal. Here, a facultative anaerobic bacterium, Enterobacter sp. Z1, presented capacities of simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction and As(III) oxidation during anoxic cultivation in a wild range of temperature (20-45 °C) and pH (Cerkez et al., 2015; Chen et al., 2015; China Environmental Prote, 1996; Fan et al., 2008, 2019) conditions. Strikingly, strain Z1 could simultaneously contribute up to 92.8% of the reduction of Cr(VI) and 45.8% of the oxidation of As(III) in wastewater. The cells of strain Z1 were embedded with sodium alginate to produce biobeads, and the biobeads exhibited stable ratio of Cr(VI) reduction (91.8%) and As(III) oxidation (29.6%) even in the 5 continuous cycles of wastewater treatment. Moreover, in a process pretreated with the Z1 biobeads followed a precipitation with Ca(OH)₂ and FeCl₃, the removal efficiencies in wastewater were 98.9% and 98.3% for total Cr and As, respectively, which were 44.1% and 9.8% higher than those of using Ca(OH)₂ and FeCl₃, only. The residual amounts of Cr and As met the national standard levels of wastewater discharge. Proteomics analysis showed that cysteine, sulfur and methionine metabolisms, As resistance and oxidoreductase (CysH, CysI, CysJ, NemA and HemF) were induced by Cr(VI) and As(III). Moreover, the addition of cysteine to the medium also significantly improved bacterial Cr(VI) reduction rate. Our results provide a novel microbial pretreatment approach for enhancing remediation of Cr(VI) and As(III) pollution in wastewater, and reveal the evident that cysteine, sulfur and methionine metabolisms, As resistance and oxidoreductases are associated with the redox conversion of Cr(VI) and As(III).

Reinforcement of Quaternary Ammonium Modified Silica (QAMS) with Magnetite and its Application by Solid Phase Adsorption (SPA) to Adsorb Chromate Ions

Chromium (VI) in the form of chromate anions that have toxic properties needs to be overcome. This study aims to reinforce cationic sorbent quaternary amine-modified silica with magnetite (QAMS-Fe3O4) to adsorb chromate ions. QAMS prepared by reflux methylation ammine modified silica (AMS) obtained from destruction silicate from rice husk ash followed by the addition of 3-APTMS. Characterization QAMS-Fe3O4 by FT-IR showed successfully of methylation process indicated by disappearing absorbance at 1388 cm-1, and emerging absorbance at 2939 cm-1 in QAMS and QAMS-Fe3O4 indicated a transformation of N-H from -NH2 group to [-N+(CH3)3]. XRD analysis denotes 2θ = 30.15°, 35.53°, 43.12°, 57.22°, and 62.90° (JCPDS No. 00-033-0664) fathomed as a characteristic peak of magnetite. SEM-EDX reveals the homogenous topological spherical form with an average particle size 0.006 µm that is dominated by Si element (52.81%) with magnetic moment value = 34.1 emu/g. The stability test shows that this material stable in an acid condition. The adsorption of chromate ions was conducted by the SPA method. Optimal pH obtained by pH range 4-7 with more than 90% adsorbed chromate ions. Variation of increasing series flow rate from 0.05 to 1.5 mL min-1 resulted in decreased adsorbed chromate ions. The use of SPA methods offered simpler and easier handling than the batch method without overriding the adsorption process effectiveness.

Fungal Endophytes for Grass Based Bioremediation: An Endophytic Consortium Isolated from Agrostis stolonifera Stimulates the Growth of Festuca arundinacea in Lead Contaminated Soil

Bioremediation is an ecologically-friendly approach for the restoration of heavy metal-contaminated sites and can exploit environmental microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. These microorganisms are capable of removing and/or deactivating pollutants from contaminated substrates through biological and chemical reactions. Moreover, they interact with the natural flora, protecting and stimulating plant growth in these harsh conditions. In this study, we isolated a group of endophytic fungi from Agrostis stolonifera grasses growing on toxic waste from an abandoned lead mine (up to 47,990 Pb mg/kg) and identified them using DNA sequencing (nrITS barcoding). The endophytes were then tested as a consortium of eight strains in a growth chamber experiment in association with the grass Festuca arundinacea at increasing concentrations of lead in the soil to investigate how they influenced several growth parameters. As a general trend, plants treated with endophytes performed better compared to the controls at each concentration of heavy metal, with significant improvements in growth recorded at the highest concentration of lead (800 galena mg/kg). Indeed, this set of plants germinated and tillered significantly earlier compared to the control, with greater production of foliar fresh and dry biomass. Compared with the control, endophyte treated plants germinated more than 1-day earlier and produced 35.91% more plant tillers at 35 days-after-sowing. Our results demonstrate the potential of these fungal endophytes used in a consortium for establishing grassy plant species on lead contaminated soils, which may result in practical applications for heavy metal bioremediation.

Sulfur-Decorated Hyper-Cross-Linked Coal Tar: A Microporous Organic Polymer for Efficient and Expeditious Mercury Removal

Hyper-cross-linked microporous organic polymers are a class of porous materials that have captured widespread attention owing to their high surface areas and wide range of monomeric sources. Balancing economy with performance is the initial hurdle when designing effective hyper-cross-linked microporous organic polymers. Herein, we demonstrated an inexpensive sulfurated solvent-knitted hyper-cross-linked microporous polymer scaffold, named sulfur-decorated hyper-cross-linked coal tar (CTHP-SES), utilizing coal tar as an aromatic monomer with numerous positions for potential chelation of toxic metals, particularly mercury, from water. The resulting material illustrated selective adsorption of mercury from both water (1037 mg g^-1) and the gas phase (416 mg g^-1) with rapid kinetics (183.67 mg min^-1 g^-1), good recyclability (4 runs), and excellent stability under both strong basic and acidic conditions. CTHP-SES was able to reduce the concentration of the Hg(II) solution from 1 mg L^-1 to 32 μg L^-1 after 10 min due in part to the promising distribution coefficient (K_d = 2.371 × 10⁶ mL g^-1). These results show that CTHP-SES offers a promising and practical platform to cope with a variety of environmental contaminations.

Exploration on the bioreduction mechanisms of Cr(VI) and Hg(II) by a newly isolated bacterial strain Pseudomonas umsongensis CY-1

Despite of significant progress in remediation of Cr(VI) or Hg(II) pollution by microorganisms, study on the reduction of both Cr(VI) and Hg(II) by the same microbial strain was not reported so far, which is actually important for bioremediation of contaminated sites with multiple heavy metals. In this study, Pseudomonas umsongensis CY-1 was newly isolated from chromium-contaminated soil and showed remediation potentials for both Cr(VI) and Hg(II) pollution. The highest Cr(VI) (93.9%) and Hg(II) (82.8%) reduction rates were obtained at the initial concentration of 5 mg/L. Comparison between removal by resting cells and heat-treated resting cells demonstrated that P. umsongensis CY-1 removed Cr(VI) and Hg(II) from Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.0) mainly through reduction instead of adsorption. By comparing the Cr(VI) and Hg(II) reduction rates of different cellular fractions, it was found that Cr(VI) and Hg(II) reductions mainly happened in the cytoplasm of P. umsongensis CY-1, which were further demonstrated by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Furthermore, analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that the reduction products of Cr(VI) and Hg(II) were mainly in the form of Cr(III) and Hg (0), respectively. The findings in this study will provide a guide for further insights in the bioremediation of contaminated sites with multiple heavy metals.

Hydrochemical composition and potentially toxic elements in the Kyrgyzstan portion of the transboundary Chu-Talas river basin, Central Asia

Water chemistry and the assessment of health risks of potentially toxic elements have important research significance for water resource utilization and human health. However, not enough attention has been paid to the study of surface water environments in many parts of Central Asia. Sixty water samples were collected from the transboundary river basin of Chu-Talas during periods of high and low river flow, and the hydrochemical composition, including major ions and potentially toxic elements (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and As), was used to determine the status of irrigation suitability and risks to human health. The results suggest that major ions in river water throughout the entire basin are mainly affected by water-rock interactions, resulting in the dissolution and weathering of carbonate and silicate rocks. The concentrations of major ions change to some extent with different hydrological periods; however, the hydrochemical type of calcium carbonate remains unchanged. Based on the water-quality assessment, river water in the basin is classified as excellent/good for irrigation. The relationship between potentially toxic elements (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and As) and major ions is basically the same between periods of high and low river flow. There are significant differences between the sources of potentially toxic elements (Zn, Pb, Cu, and As) and major ions; however, Cr may share the same rock source as major ions. The risk assessment revealed low non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for human health; however, the maximum carcinogenic risk for As exceeded the allowable value, which requires further consideration. These results provide a scientific basis for the management of agricultural irrigation uses and also infill existing gaps regarding the hydrochemical composition in the Chu-Talas river basin, Central Asia.

An overview on heavy metal resistant microorganisms for simultaneous treatment of multiple chemical pollutants at co-contaminated sites, and their multipurpose application

Anthropogenic imbalance of chemical pollutants in environment raises serious threat to all life forms. Contaminated sites often possess multiple heavy metals and other types of pollutants. Elimination of chemical pollutants at co-contaminated sites is imperative for the safe ecosystem functions, and simultaneous removal approach is an attractive scheme for their remediation. Different conventional techniques have been applied as concomitant treatment solution but fall short at various parameters. In parallel, use of microorganisms offers an innovative, cost effective and ecofriendly approach for simultaneous treatment of various chemical pollutants. However, microbiostasis due to harmful effects of heavy metals or other contaminants is a serious bottleneck facing remediation practices in co-contaminated sites. But certain microorganisms have unique mechanisms to resist heavy metals, and can act on different noxious wastes. Considering this significant, my review provides information on different heavy metal resistant microorganisms for bioremediation of different chemical pollutants, and other assistance. In this favour, the integrated approach of simultaneous treatment of multiple heavy metals and other environmental contaminants using different heavy metal resistant microorganisms is summarized. Further, the discussion also intends toward the use of heavy metal resistant microorganisms associated with industrial and environmental applications, and healthcare. PREFACE: Simultaneous treatment of multiple chemical pollutants using microorganisms is relatively a new approach. Therefore, this subject was not well received for review before. Also, multipurpose application of heavy metal microorganisms has certainly not considered for review. In this regard, this review attempts to gather information on recent progress on studies on different heavy metal resistant microorganisms for their potential of treatment of co-contaminated sites, and multipurpose application.

Isolation and Characterization of Pseudomonas sp. Cr13 and Its Application in Removal of Heavy Metal Chromium

The purpose of this study was to elaborate the characteristics of Pseudomonas sp. Cr13, including physiological and biochemical characteristics, optimization of growth conditions, minimum inhibitory concentration of Cr⁶⁺ and resistance to other heavy metals, removal efficiency of Cr⁶⁺, and antibiotics sensitivity. A strain Pseudomonas sp. Cr13 was screened from mine-contaminated soils, which could tolerate high concentration of Cr⁶⁺ (up to 250 mg l^-1) and Cd²⁺ (50 mg l^-1). The optimum pH, NaCl concentration, and temperature for growth were 6, 10% NaCl, and 30 °C, respectively. The removal efficiency of Cr⁶⁺ by strain Pseudomonas sp. Cr13 was studied. The removal efficiency of Cr⁶⁺ decreased with the increased concentration of Cr⁶⁺. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum of the removal rate can reach up to 94.26% in contaminated soils. In addition, antibiotics sensitivity of this strain was investigated. It was found that this strain was sensitive to nine types of antibiotics, which would lay a good foundation for the choice of selective marker in genetic engineering modification of this strain. The results in this article would lay a good foundation for the bioremediation of heavy metals pollution in the future. Pseudomonas sp. Cr13 can tolerate high concentration of Cr⁶⁺ and partially remove Cr⁶⁺, which make Cr13 an attractive option for the bioremediation of heavy metal chromium (Cr). Our findings suggest that Pseudomonas sp. Cr13 is a potential bacterium with the ability of bioremediation of heavy metal Cr.

Bioremediation of toxic heavy metals (THMs) contaminated sites: concepts, applications and challenges

Heavy metal contamination is a global issue, where the prevalent contaminants are arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr)(VI), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb). More often, they are collectively known as "most problematic heavy metals" and "toxic heavy metals" (THMs). Their treatment through a variety of biological processes is one of the prime interests in remediation studies, where heavy metal-microbe interaction approaches receive high interest for their cost effective and ecofriendly solutions. In this review, we provide an up to date information on different microbial processes (bioremediation) for the removal of THMs. For the same, emphasis is put on oxidation-reduction, biomineralization, bioprecipitation, bioleaching, biosurfactant technology, biovolatilization, biosorption, bioaccumulation, and microbe-assisted phytoremediation with their selective advantages and disadvantages. Further, the literature briefly discusses about the various setups of cleaning processes of THMs in environment under ex situ and in situ applications. Lately, the study sheds light on the manipulation of microorganisms through genetic engineering and nanotechnology for their advanced treatment approaches.

Environmental Exposures and Hearing Loss

Pollutants that contaminate the natural or built environment adversely affect the health of living organisms. Although exposure to many of them could be avoided or minimized by careful preventive measures, it is impossible to totally avoid exposure to all pollutants. Ototraumatic agents, such as noise, chemicals, and heavy metals, are pervasive pollutants, mostly produced by human activity, and are critical factors in inducing acquired hearing loss. More importantly, exposure to these pollutants often occurs concurrently and, therefore, the synergistic interactions potentiate auditory dysfunction in susceptible individuals. Epidemiological studies have provided compelling data on the incidence of auditory dysfunction after exposure to a number of ototraumatic agents in the environment, while animal studies have offered crucial insights for understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms. Together, they provide a framework for developing effective interventional approaches for mitigating the adverse impacts of environmental or occupational exposure to ototraumatic agents. This article provides a brief overview of the common pollutants that cause hearing loss.

Comparison of adsorption properties for cadmium removal from aqueous solution by Enteromorpha prolifera biochar modified with different chemical reagents

Using biochar to remove heavy metals from water is environmentally beneficial. In this study, three kinds of chemical reagents, including ZnCl₂, H₃PO₄ and KMnO₄, were introduced to modify the biochar derived from Enteromorpha prolifera. The performance of these modified biochar in removing Cadmium ions (Cd(II)) from water was investigated. The physicochemical properties of activated biochars were characterized by N₂-sorption, thermal gravity and differential thermal gravity (TG/DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the removal rate of Cd(II) from water by EP biochar modified with H₃PO₄ was significantly increased, and the maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(II) reached to 423 mg/g for PBC. Moreover, the adsorption of Cd(II) from water by phosphoric acid modified biochar was very fast, and the saturation adsorption of Cd(II) was reached within 1 h. Compared with pseudo first-order model, pseudo secondary-order model was much more suitable for analyzing the adsorption kinetics data of Cd(II) onto KBC or ZBC. The adsorption of Cd(II) onto PBC was analyzed by the intra-particle diffusion kinetic model, where the value of R² was high as 0.98. The Langmuir model was fit for phosphoric acid modified biochar.

Renal bioaccumulation of trace elements in urban and rural Sri Lankan populations: A preliminary study based on post mortem tissue analysis

INTRODUCTION

Environmental pollution, especially by toxic trace elements, is a global health concern. Heavy metals such as Cadmium (Cd), Arsenic (As) and Lead (Pb) are associated with numerous disorders and are considered by some as an aetiological factor for the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKDu1) epidemic in Sri Lanka. This study explores patterns of bioaccumulation of six trace elements in kidneys obtained during forensic autopsies from urban and rural regions in Sri Lanka.

METHODS

Kidney samples obtained from one urban district (n = 13) and three rural districts (n = 18) were lyophilized, microwave digested and profiled by ICP-MS techniques.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The mean age of the sampled population was 47.9 ± 11.3 yrs. Median (IQR) for Cd, As, Pb, Cr, Zn and Se were, 14.67(8.04-22.47) μg/g, 0.44(0.29-0.56) μg/g, 0.11(0.07-0.30) μg/g, 0.15(0.1096-0.3274), 25.55(17.24-39.35) μg/g and 0.52(0.37-0.84) μg/g, respectively. Cd, Zn and Se levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05) among the urban samples compared to that of the rural group. Zn and Se levels were higher among younger age groups. As, Pb and Cr did not show any significant differences between the two cohorts nor any correlations with age.

CONCLUSION

This population-specific baseline study provides an insight into the differences in exposure to toxic trace elements and essential elements between urban and rural populations. Residents in CKDu affected rural districts did not appear to be at risk of toxic heavy metal exposure, however their renal bioaccumulation of nephroprotective essential elements was lower than urban residents.

Adsorption of Lead (II) from Aqueous Solution with High Efficiency by Hydrothermal Biochar Derived from Honey

A novel natural honey hydrothermal biochar (HHTB) was prepared using natural honey as raw material. The as-prepared adsorbent was applied to adsorb Pb²⁺ from aqueous solution and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the structure and morphology change of the adsorbent before and after Pb²⁺ adsorption. The influence of the pH, initial Pb²⁺ concentration, temperature, and contact time on the adsorption of Pb²⁺ was systematically investigated. The results revealed that the adsorption capacity for Pb²⁺ is up to 133.2 mg·g⁻¹ at initial pH of 5.0 and adsorption temperature of 298 K. Meanwhile, the adsorption of Pb²⁺ on HHTB can be well fitted by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorbent had great selectivity for Pb²⁺ from the aqueous solution containing coexisting ions including Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Cr³⁺, Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Zn²⁺. Furthermore, the adsorption of Pb²⁺ on HHTB was attributed to complexation coordination, where it involved hydroxyl and carboxylic groups on HHTB in the process of adsorption of Pb²⁺.

Modulatory Effects of Pb2+ on Virally Challenged Chicken Macrophage (HD-11) and B-Lymphocyte (DT40) Cell Lines In Vitro

Elevated levels of lead have been found in waterfowl, due to human activities. Lead may cause immunomodulatory effects, but the mechanisms are largely unknown, especially after viral challenges. To characterize avian immunomodulatory hazards of lead (Pb)2+ , we used chicken macrophage (HD-11) and B-lymphocyte (DT40) cell lines, as in vitro models for the innate and adaptive immune systems, respectively. The cells were activated via toll-like receptor-3 by polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid sodium salt (poly I:C), mimicking viral infections. Our results indicate that Pb2+ is cytotoxic to both cell lines, macrophages being more sensitive. De novo synthesis of glutathione plays an important role in protecting macrophages from Pb2+ intoxication, which might also be closely involved in the induction of nitric oxide after Pb2+ exposure. Stimulatory effects on cell proliferation were noticed at noncytotoxic Pb2+ concentrations as well. Exposure to Pb2+ could also affect the inflammatory status by inhibiting the pro-inflammatory interferon (IFN)-γ while promoting the production of anti-inflammatory type I IFNs in both macrophages and B-cells, and increasing intracellular IgM levels in B-cells. These results suggest that the immunomodulatory effects of Pb2+ in birds are probably closely associated with disruption of immune cell proliferation and cytokine production, potentially causing disorders of the avian immune system. Bioremediation of heavy metals using microalgae: Recent advances and mechanisms

Five heavy metals namely, arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) are carcinogenic and show toxicity even at trace amounts, posing threats to environmental ecology and human health. There is an emerging trend of employing microalgae in phycoremediation of heavy metals, due to several benefits including abundant availability, inexpensive, excellent metal removal efficiency and eco-friendly nature. This review presents the recent advances and mechanisms involved in bioremediation and biosorption of these toxic heavy metals utilizing microalgae. Tolerance and response of different microalgae strains to heavy metals and their bioaccumulation capability with value-added by-products formation as well as utilization of non-living biomass as biosorbents are discussed. Furthermore, challenges and future prospects in bioremediation of heavy metals by microalgae are also explored. This review aims to provide useful insights to help future development of efficient and commercially viable technology for microalgae-based heavy metal bioremediation.

Co-occurrence of functionally diverse bacterial community as biofilm on the root surface of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laub

The current study investigates the functional diversity of bacterial community existing as a biofilm on the root surface of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms-Laub.) grown in Yamuna river, Delhi, India. Forty-nine bacterial isolates recorded a diverse pattern of susceptibility/resistance to 23 antibiotics tested. Most of the bacterial isolates were susceptible to Ofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Ceftriaxone, Gentamicin, and Cefepime and resistant to Ceftazidime, Nitrofurantoin, Ampicillin, and Nalidixic acid. Isolate RB33-V recorded resistant against 11 antibiotics tested, and RB42-V was found susceptible to most of the antibiotics tested. Among the seven heavy metals tested, the highest of 39 bacteria showed resistance to zinc, and least of 9 bacteria recorded resistance against cadmium. Isolate RB20-III was susceptible to all heavy metals tested, and RB23-III was found resistance for six heavy metals tested. A higher correlation was observed with zinc and multiple antibiotic resistance, and Ceftazidime resistance was most frequently associated with all the heavy metals tested. These bacteria grow optimally under neutral-alkali conditions and susceptible to acidic conditions, and they can withstand a broad range of temperatures and salt concentrations. They are very poor in phosphate solubilization. Further, the bacteria recorded varied results for beneficial traits, hemolytic, and DNase activity. The results of bacterial characterization indicated that this bacterial community is of multi-origin in nature and are assisting the host-plant in withstanding the adverse and fluctuating conditions of the Yamuna river by reducing the toxic effect of heavy metals, antibiotics and other xenobiotics.

Spatial-temporal characteristics and driving factors of the human health impacts of five industrial aquatic toxic metals in China

With the rapid advancement of industrialization without effective supervision, industrial aquatic toxic metal (TM) emissions pose threats to human health in China. Due to differences in socioeconomic development, the regional disparity of industrial aquatic TM emissions is obvious nationwide. In this study, the human health impacts (HHIs) of industrial aquatic TM emissions (i.e., mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As)) in the 31 provinces of China were evaluated based on the ReCiPe method, and the driving factors affecting HHIs from 2000 to 2015 were decomposed using the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method. The results showed that the HHIs gradually decreased, with more than an 80% decrease from 2000 to 2015. The order of the TMs contributing to the national HHIs in 2015 was as follows: As (79.5%) > Cr(VI) (19.6%) > Hg (0.4%) > Pb (0.2%) = Cd (0.2%), and 21 (68%) provinces were dominated by industrial aquatic As emissions. Economic development is the major driving factor of the increase in HHIs, while the HHI strength and wastewater discharge intensity are the key driving factors causing reductions in the HHIs. Hunan, Inner Mongolia, Hubei, and Jiangxi accounted for approximately 55% of the total HHIs in 2015. Some suggestions for reducing HHIs based on the local realities of different provinces were put proposed considering two aspects: economic strategy and technical capability.

Atmospheric deposition of hazardous elements and its accumulation in both soil and grain of winter wheat in a lead-zinc smelter contaminated area, Central China

Hazardous elements (HEs) and its deposition from atmosphere have become a major healthy and environmental concern worldwide, however, the risks to food safety of deposited HE are still largely unknown, especially for wheat grains (Triticum aestivum L.). This research was to characterize atmospheric deposition of high HEs [such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As)] at deposited site (TS) and assess its impacts on the soil and winter wheat accumulation in a lead‑zinc smelter contaminated area of Central China. Results indicated that deposited As, Cd and Pb at TS site were 31.15, 15.94 and 281.86 mg m^-2 during the winter wheat growing season, contributing 86.9%, 81.7% and 80.4% to the annual total, respectively. Most of deposited HEs were retained in top 35-cm soil, resulting in soil Cd concentration above the national soil regulatory limit (0.6 mg kg^-1; GB 15618-2018). The newly deposited HEs could contribute 57.7-88.2% and 16.2-29.1% to total HEs of wheat grains in clean soil based on a soil transplanted experiment and in contaminated soil based on a two-year in-situ experiment, respectively. Moreover, the newly deposited HEs significantly increased HE concentration of wheat grain by 22.9-57.5% in the contaminated soil when an immobilizing amendment were applied (p < 0.05), and grain Cd concentration exceeded the national grain limit (0.1 mg kg^-1; GB 2762-2017). Thus, deposited HE could be accumulated in soil and wheat grain and decrease the remediation effectiveness of passivation amendments in contaminated soils, which would raise a public awareness of HE deposition and provide a scientific data in support of environmental pollution control and remediation.

Association of blood metal exposure with testosterone and hemoglobin: A cross-sectional study in Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study

BACKGROUND

Few epidemiological studies have investigated associations of exposure to multiple metals with testosterone homeostasis and erythropoiesis, especially for the pregnant women.

METHODS

Among all the 1644 participants enrolled in Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study (HBCS) at baseline, a total of 918 pregnant women with complete data of interest were analyzed. The whole blood metals levels were examined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and serum testosterone level was evaluated by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA), and erythropoietic parameters values were extracted from medical record. Multivariable linear regression models were applied to estimate the relationships between metals levels and testosterone level, and between metals levels and erythropoietic parameters, and potential confounders were adjusted.

RESULTS

Single metal model analysis revealed a significant association of blood As, Mn and Pb level with serum testosterone level. After controlling for multiple testing, the dose-response trend with statistical significance (FDR-adjusted p trend <0.05) was observed across tertiles of Pb with testosterone. This association, when by stratified by gender, remained in pregnant women with a male fetus but did not reach significant in those with a female fetus. Furthermore, blood Pb level was positively associated with red blood cell counts, hemoglobin level and hematocrit. Serum testosterone level was positively associated with red blood cell counts, hemoglobin level and hematocrit. Mediation analyses indicated that testosterone might act as a mediator in the association between Pb exposure and erythropoietic parameters.

CONCLUSIONS

Serum testosterone level and hemoglobin level was positively related to blood Pb level among Chinese pregnant women, and testosterone might mediate the effect of Pb exposure on hemoglobin. Additional prospective studies are warranted to confirm the causality.

Reduced Glutathione Protects Subcellular Compartments From Pb-Induced ROS Injury in Leaves and Roots of Upland Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Heavy metals-based changes in the plants and their alleviation through eco-friendly agents including reduced glutathione (GSH) have been widely studied. In the present experiment, we tested the alleviatory role of reduced glutathione (GSH) in seedlings of upland cotton cultivar, TM-1 under lead (Pb) toxicity. Plants were grown in the Hoagland solution containing Pb (0 μM), Pb (500 μM), GSH (50 μM), and GSH + Pb (50 μM + 500 μM). Lead exposure exacerbated hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and hydroxyl radical (OH^•) levels, induced lipid peroxidation (MDA), and decreased the activities of catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in the terminal and median leaves of 28-days old cotton seedlings stressed for 10 days. However, in the primary and secondary roots, CAT activity was increased but APX decreased. Similarly, peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were enhanced in the median leaves but a declining trend was observed in the terminal leaves, primary roots and secondary roots. Glutathione reductase (GR) activity, ascorbic acid (AsA) contents and GSH concentrations were increased in all parts except AsA in the median leaves. Transmission electron micrographs of Pb-treated plants exhibited deformed cell wall and cell membrane, disfigured chloroplasts and irregularly shaped mitochondria in the terminal and median leaves. Further, cell membrane, mitochondria, nucleus and other cell organelles in root cells were severely affected by the Pb. Thus their identification was little bit difficult through ultramicroscopy. External GSH stabilized leaf and root ultramorphology by stabilizing cell membranes, stimulating formation of multivesicular body vesicles, and by maintaining structural integrity of other organelles. Evidently, GSH played major alleviatory role against Pb toxicity in upland cotton.

Determination of 17α-ethinylestradiol and toxic metals in surface waters, and estimation of daily intake

The presence of substances such as hormones and toxic metal in aquatic ecosystem is interesting to the scientific community due to their adverse effects. We quantified 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) and toxic metals in the surface waters from Sorocaba and Pirajibu Rivers, in São Paulo State, and we estimated the daily intake for hormone, based on the amount of water consumed. EE2, Cd, Hg, As, Pb, and Mn were seasonally quantified in six different locations along the rivers. EE2 was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography. Toxic metals were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Considering the entire sample year, EE2 concentrations ranged from 4.5 to 48.2 μg L^-1. Comparing Sorocaba and Pirajibu rivers, the sample point in the entrance of the Pirajibu River through the city of Itu, São Paulo State, had higher amounts of EE2. Regarding metals, all results are according to the Brazilian and World Health Organization guidelines for drinking-water quality, except for Mn levels, which were higher than the limits in Autumn season in two locations. The estimated daily intake ranged from 13.45 to 40.9 μg/day/person. In conclusion, concentrations of EE2 in the Sorocaba and Pirajibu Rivers were higher than in other countries. The levels were as high as an intake of one pill for each person every day (considering an oral contraceptive has 0.03 mg of ethinylestradiol). Even though concentrations of toxic elements are in accordance with the Brazilian Regulation and World Health Organization, legislation for hormones and drugs needs to advance.
