Effect of COVID-19 infection on pregnant women in plateau regions

OBJECTIVE

The present study aims to explore the effect of COVID-19 infection on pregnant women in plateau regions.

STUDY DESIGN

Data from 381 pregnant women infected with COVID-19 who underwent prenatal examination or treatment at Women and Children's Hospital of Tibet Autonomous Region between January 2020 and December 2022 and 314 pregnant women not infected with COVID-19 were retrospectively collected.

METHODS

The study participants were divided into an infected and non-infected group according to whether they were infected with COVID-19. Basic information (ethnicity, age, body mass index and gestational age [GA]), vaccination status, intensive care unit (ICU) admission and delivery outcomes were compared. Binary logistic regression was used to analyse the influencing factors of ICU admission.

RESULTS

The results revealed significant differences in the GA, vaccination rate, blood pressure, partial pressure of oxygen, white blood cell (WBC) count, ICU admission rate, preeclampsia rate, forearm presentation rate, thrombocytopenia rate, syphilis infection rate and placental abruption rate between the two groups (P < 0.05). A univariate analysis showed that COVID-19 infection, hepatitis B virus infection, the WBC count and hypoproteinaemia were risk factors for ICU admission. The results of the multivariate analysis of the ICU admission of pregnant women showed that COVID-19 infection (odds ratio [OR] = 4.271, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 3.572-5.820, P < 0.05) was a risk factor for ICU admission and the WBC count (OR = 0.935, 95 % CI: 0.874-0.947, P < 0.05) was a protective factor for ICU admission.

CONCLUSION

Pregnant women are vulnerable to the adverse consequences of COVID-19 infection, and public health measures such as vaccination are needed to protect this population subgroup.

Amendment-driven soil health restoration through soil pH and microbial robustness in a Cd/Cu-combined acidic soil: A ten-year in-situ field experiment

Soil health arguably depends on biodiversity and has received wide attention in heavy-metal (HM) contaminated farmland remediation in recent years. However, long-term effects and mechanisms of soil amendment remain poorly understood with respect to soil microbal community. In this in-situ field study, four soil amendments (attapulgite-At, apatite-Ap, montmorillonite-M, lime-L) at three rates were applied once only for ten years in a cadmium (Cd)-copper (Cu) contaminated paddy soil deprecated for over five years. Results showed that after ten years and in compared with CK (no amendment), total Cd concentration and its risk in plot soils were not altered by amendments (p > 0.05), but total Cu concentration and its risk were significantly increased by both Ap and L, especially the former, rather than At and M (p < 0.05), through increased soil pH and enhanced bacterial alpha diversity as well as plant community. Soil microbial communities were more affected by amendment type (30%) than dosage (11%), microbial network characteristics were dominated by rare taxa, and soil multifunctionality was improved in Ap- and L-amended soils. A structural equation model (SEM) indicated that 57.3% of soil multifunctionality variances were accounted for by soil pH (+0.696) and microbial network robustness (-0.301). Moreover, microbial robustness could be potentially used as an indicator of soil multifunctionality, and Ap could be optimized to improve soil health in combined with biomass removal. These findings would advance the understanding of soil microbial roles, especially its network robustness, on soil multifunctionality for the remediation of metal contaminated soils and metal control management strategies in acidic soils. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Farmland soil contamination by heavy metals (HMs) has been becoming a serious global environmental challenge. However, most studies have been conducted over the short term, leading to a gap in the long-term remediation efficiency and ecological benefits of soil amendments. For the successful deployment of immobilization technologies, it is critical to understand the long-term stability of the immobilized HMs and soil health. Our study, to the best of our knowlege, is the first to state the long-term effects and mechanisms of soil amendments on soil health and optimize an effective and eco-friendly amendment for long-term Cd/Cu immobilization.

Influence of splenomegaly on aortic and liver parenchymal CT numbers during contrast-enhance CT in patients with cirrhosis

INTRODUCTION

To compare CT (computed tomography) values for enhancement of the abdominal aorta and liver parenchyma during dynamic contrast enhancement (CE) CT in cirrhotic patients with and without splenomegaly (SM).

METHODS

We considered 258 patients (83 males and 46 females for the splenomegaly group, and 83 males and 46 females for the control group) for this retrospective study. We measured CT values in the abdominal aorta and hepatic parenchyma during the hepatic arterial (HAP) and portal venous (PVP) phases. The aortic CE at HAP and the hepatic parenchymal CE at PVP were compared between the two groups. For success rate of scans, we also calculated the optimal CE rates (>280 HU in the abdominal aorta and >50 HU in the hepatic parenchyma) for each group.

RESULTS

In the SM group, the CE for abdominal aorta was decreased during the aortic phase for a dynamic CE-CT (p < 0.05). When evaluating the success rates, they were found to be 65.1 % and 58.9 % in the SM group and 81.4 % and 72.3 % in the non-SM group (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The success rate of scans and CE for the abdominal aorta during the aortic phase exhibited a significant decrease during dynamic CE-CT scans on patients with SM. Patients with SM may have reduced diagnostic ability with typical contrast injection protocols.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

It may be necessary to change the injection rates and contrast medium volume during CE-CT depending on the presence or absence of SM.

Linking ecological niches to bacterial community structure and assembly in polluted urban aquatic ecosystems

Introduction

Bacterial communities play crucial roles in the functioning and resilience of aquatic ecosystems, and their responses to water pollution may be assessed from ecological niches. However, our understanding of such response patterns and the underlying ecological mechanisms remains limited.

Methods

In this study, we comprehensively investigated the effects of water pollution on the bacterial structure and assembly within different ecological niches, including water, sediment, submerged plant leaf surfaces, and leaf surfaces, using a 16S high-throughput sequencing approach.

Results

Ecological niches had a greater impact on bacterial community diversity than pollution, with a distinct enrichment of unique dominant phyla in different niches. This disparity in diversity extends to the bacterial responses to water pollution, with a general reduction in α-diversity observed in the niches, excluding leaf surfaces. Additionally, the distinct changes in bacterial composition in response to pollution should be correlated with their predicted functions, given the enrichment of functions related to biogeochemical cycling in plant surface niches. Moreover, our study revealed diverse interaction patterns among bacterial communities in different niches, characterized by relatively simply associations in sediments and intricate or interconnected networks in water and plant surfaces. Furthermore, stochastic processes dominated bacterial community assembly in the water column, whereas selective screening of roots and pollution events increased the impact of deterministic processes.

Discussion

Overall, our study emphasizes the importance of ecological niches in shaping bacterial responses to water pollution. These findings improve our understanding of the complicated microbial response patterns to water pollution and have ecological implications for aquatic ecosystem health.

PD-L1 Inhibitors Combined with Thoracic Radiotherapy in First-Line Treatment of Extensive Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Propensity Score-Matched, Real-World Study

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

The CREST study showed that the addition of thoracic radiotherapy (TRT) could improve the survival of extensive stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC), but whether TRT can bring survival benefit in the era of immunotherapy is controversial. This study aims to explore the efficacy and safety of adding TRT to the combination of PD-L1 inhibitors and chemotherapy.

MATERIALS/METHODS

Thepatients who received PD-L1 inhibitors combined with platinum-based chemotherapy as the first-line treatment of ES-SCLC from January 2019 to December 2021 were retrospectively collected. According to whether they received TRT, they were divided into two groups, and the follow-up analysis was performed. Propensity score matching (PSM) in with a 1:1 ratio was performed to balance the baseline characteristics of the two cohorts. The endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS) and OS.

RESULTS

A total of 211 patients with ES-SCLC were enrolled, of whom 70 (33.2%) patients received standard therapy plus TRT as first-line treatment, and 141 (66.8%) patients in the control group received PD-L1 inhibitors plus chemotherapy. After PSM, a total of 65 pairs of patients were enrolled in the analysis. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups of patients who received TRT and those who did not. In all patients, the median PFS (mPFS) in the TRT group and the non-TRT groupwere 9.5 months and 7.2 months, respectively, with HR = 0.60 (95% CI 0.41-0.87, p = 0.007). The median OS (mOS) in the TRT group was also significantly longer than that in the non-TRT group (24.1 months vs. 18.5 months, HR = 0.53, 95% CI 0.32-0.85, p = 0.009). Multivariable analysis showed that baseline liver metastasis and bone metastasis were independent prognostic factors for OS. In terms of safety, immunotherapy combined with thoracic radiotherapy increased the incidence of treatment-related pneumonia (p<0.001), most of which were grade 1-2.

CONCLUSION

This real-world study shows that adding TRT to durvalumab or atezolizumab plus chemotherapy significantly improves survival in ES-SCLC. It leads to more treatment-related pneumonia, but most of them can be relieved after symptomatic treatment. This treatment model deserves to be explored in prospective clinical trials.

Hippuris vulgaris could replace Myriophyllum aquaticum for efficiently removing water phosphorus under low temperature conditions in China

Phytoremediation is widely used for the restoration of aquatic environments. However, the phytoremediation effects and mechanisms of special submerged species of native aquatic plants, especially under low-temperature conditions, are not yet clear. In this study, two typical submerged plants, Myriophyllum aquaticum (M. aquaticum; an exotic species) and Hippuris vulgaris (H. vulgaris; a native species), in China were investigated for their phosphorus (P) removal efficiencies (RE_p) and the related mechanisms of phytophysiology and microorganisms in a low-temperature incubator (10 °C during the day and 2 °C at night). At an initial P level of 0.5 mg L^-1, the two plants exhibited similar RE_p, with the highest values (73.5%-92.1%) observed on days 3-6. After 18 days, the residual P concentration in the water was less than the Grade III limit value (0.2 mg L^-1; GB 3838-2002). However, M. aquaticum had a faster RE_p velocity than H. vulgaris at an initial P level of 3.0 mg L^-1, which was attributed to the mechanisms of plant and its interactions with microorganisms. Compared to the control group, the superoxide dismutase activity of H. vulgaris was significantly increased and its catalase activity was decreased, whereas for that of M. aquaticum was the opposite. Micro region X-ray fluorescence analysis revealed that there may be synergic absorption effects between P, S, and K, and antagonistic absorption action between P and Mn in H. vulgaris. In addition, Acinetobacter, Novosphingobium and Pseudomonas were enriched at 3.0 mg L^-1 P level with these two plants, but Chlorophyta only accumulated with H. vulgaris, respectively. Overall, the native species, H. vulgaris, could replace the exotic M. aquaticum to efficiently remove P from polluted water at low temperatures. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for submerged plants P removal capabilities, and the protection of local ecosystem diversity at low temperatures.

Improving earthworm quality and complex metal removal from water by adding aquatic plant residues to cattle manure

Vermicomposting is an economical and environmentally friendly process. However, related knowledge of vermicomposting aquatic plant residues (APRs), earthworm quality, and mechanisms for metal removal from water is still lacking. Nelumbo and Oenanthe javanica residues and their mixture were treated with Eisenia foetida and cattle manure for 45 days. Compared with the control comprising only cattle manure, addition of the APR mixture improved earthworm quality, mainly for low crude ash, high alkaloid compounds and different fat compositions in the Nelumbo residue and the balanced protein proportion of the APR mixture. All the vermicompost especial O. javanica residue added (VO) played efficient roles in removing metals from water initially containing 2.0 mg Cu L^-1 and 8.0 mg Zn L^-1. There were higher removal efficiencies (E_rs) at the dosage of 4 g L^-1 with a small microbial contribution. VO significantly increased E_rs, which could be from the decrease of phylum Firmicutes (especial Bacteroides) abundance, stronger CH₂, C = O, and CH, the addition of COOH groups, and higher organic matter and total phosphorus contents. The combination of VO and Hippuris vulgaris was optimized as an ecological and economical method for treating complex-metal polluted water. Moreover, our study widened the route for APR reuse.

Anthocyanin metabolism in Nelumbo: translational and post-translational regulation control transcription

BACKGROUND

Lotus (Nelumbo Adans.) is used as an herbal medicine and the flowers are a source of natural flavonoids. 'Da Sajin', which was firstly found in the plateau area, is a natural mutant in flower color with red streamers dyeing around white petals.

RESULTS

The LC-MS-MS results showed that eight anthocyanin compounds, including cyanidin 3-O-glucoside, cyanidin 3-O-galactoside, malvidin 3-O-galactoside, and malvidin 3-O-glucoside, were differentially enriched in red-pigmented tissues of the petals, whereas most of these metabolites were undetected in white tissues of the petals. Transcriptome profiling indicated that the relative high expression levels of structural genes, such as NnPAL, NnF3H, and NnANS, was inconsistent with the low anthocyanin concentration in white tissues. Members of the NnMYB and NnbHLH transcription factor families were presumed to play a role in the metabolic flux in the anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin biosynthetic pathway. The expression model of translational initiation factor, ribosomal proteins and SKP1-CUL1-F-box protein complex related genes suggested an important role for translational and post-translational network in anthocyanin biosynthesis. In addition, pathway analysis indicated that light reaction or photo destruction might be an important external cause for floral color determination in lotus.

CONCLUSIONS

In this study, it is supposed that the natural lotus mutant 'Da Sajin' may have originated from a red-flowered ancestor. Partial loss of anthocyanin pigments in petals may result from metabolic disorder caused by light destruction. This disorder is mainly regulated at post translation and translation level, resulting in a non-inherited phenotype. These results contribute to an improved understanding of anthocyanin metabolism in lotus, and indicate that the translational and post-translational regulatory network determines the metabolic flux of anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins under specific environmental conditions.

Removal effects of aquatic plants on high-concentration phosphorus in wastewater during summer

Aquatic plants are widely used in depth treatment of wastewater; however, the phosphorus (P) removal mechanisms of aquatic plants at high temperatures in summer are not well understood. Eight aquatic plants, including two floating species (Ludwigia peploides and Hydrocharis dubia) and six emergent species (Lythrum salicaria, Sagittaria sagittifolia, Canna indica, Sparganium stoloniferum, Rotala rotundifolia, and Ludwigia ovalis), were treated with five P solutions (3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 5.5 mg L^-1) for 5 weeks in a greenhouse during summer at air temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 °C. H. dubia, L. peploides, L. salicaria, and S. sagittifolia showed high water P removal efficiencies (exceeded 95%). Furthermore, their corresponding residual P concentrations in water were almost lower than the limit value of 0.2 mg L^-1 of Grade III in the Chinese Environmental Quality Atandards for Surface Water (GB3838-2002). Plants have different water P removal paths. For example, H. dubia enriched more P with water P concentration increasing significantly. As the culture time increased, the water pH fluctuated significantly in the fall, and then H. dubia used the produced H⁺ enrich P. L. peploides did not enrich P, but proliferated rapidly, to remove P from water by increasing its fresh weight (FW). L. salicaria and S. sagittifolia showed two paths of enrich-P and FW increase. During the growth process of L. salicaria, the stem diameter and leaf length increased with an increase in P concentration in water or plant or both; however, the height and root length of L. peploides were reduced. Moreover, SOD and CAT activities responded to high P concentrations in water or high temperatures or both, which protected against oxidative damage. These findings could offer theoretical foundation and practical guidance for selection of aquatic plant species in depth treatment of wastewater during summer.

Nomogram Based on Clinical and Radiomics Data for Predicting Radiation-induced Temporal Lobe Injury in Patients with Non-metastatic Stage T4 Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

AIMS

To use pre-treatment magnetic resonance imaging-based radiomics data with clinical data to predict radiation-induced temporal lobe injury (RTLI) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients with stage T4/N0-3/M0 within 5 years after radiotherapy.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study retrospectively examined 98 patients (198 temporal lobes) with stage T4/N0-3/M0 NPC. Participants were enrolled into a training cohort or a validation cohort in a ratio of 7:3. Radiomics features were extracted from pre-treatment magnetic resonance imaging that were T1-and T2-weighted. Spearman rank correlation, the t-test and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm were used to select significant radiomics features; machine-learning models were used to generate radiomics signatures (Rad-Scores). Rad-Scores and clinical factors were integrated into a nomogram for prediction of RTLI. Nomogram discrimination was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic analysis and clinical benefits were evaluated using decision curve analysis.

RESULTS

Participants were enrolled into a training cohort (n = 139) or a validation cohort (n = 59). In total, 3568 radiomics features were initially extracted from T1-and T2-weighted images. Age, D_max, D_1cc and 16 stable radiomics features (six from T1-weighted and 10 from T2-weighted images) were identified as independent predictive factors. A greater Rad-Score was associated with a greater risk of RTLI. The nomogram showed good discrimination, with a C-index of 0.85 (95% confidence interval 0.79-0.92) in the training cohort and 0.82 (95% confidence interval 0.71-0.92) in the validation cohort.

CONCLUSION

We developed models for the prediction of RTLI in patients with stage T4/N0-3/M0 NPC using pre-treatment radiomics data and clinical data. Nomograms from these pre-treatment data improved the prediction of RTLI. These results may allow the selection of patients for earlier clinical interventions.

Phytoremediation performance of three traditional ornamental hydrophytes and the structure of their rhizosphere microorganism populations

The use of phytoremediation technology in urban and rural landscapes can permit both aesthetic and water purification functions to be achieved sustainably. Here, the ability of three ornamental aquatic plant species (Lythrum salicaria L., Sagittaria trifolia L., and Typha orientalis C. Presl) to remove nutrients from simulated contaminated water over 35 days and the structure of their rhizosphere microorganism populations were evaluated to examine their potential to be used for landscape phytoremediation as well as determine the mechanism of nutrient removal. L. salicaria had the highest nutrient removal ability (86.91-96.96% removal efficiency of total nitrogen and 46.04-66.70% removal efficiency of total phosphorus). The population structure of rhizosphere microorganisms was mainly affected by plant species and not the nutrient level of the water body according to principal coordinates analysis and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling. Betaproteobacteriales and Chitinophagales were highly correlated with the content of nutrients in water according to redundancy analysis. The accumulation of the two orders by L. salicaria and higher biomass might explain the stronger removal ability of L. salicaria. The findings of this study indicate that these plants could enhance urban and rural water landscape design; our results also shed new light on the mechanism of phytoremediation by rhizosphere microorganisms.

The Safety of Consuming Water Dropwort Used to Purify Livestock Wastewater Considering Accumulated Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance Genes

Research is lacking on the health risks of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in water dropwort grown in livestock wastewater. Our results showed that antibiotics from livestock wastewater were absorbed and bioaccumulated by water dropwort. The concentration of antibiotics was higher in the roots than in the stems and leaves. The health-risk coefficients of antibiotics in water dropwort were below the threshold (<0.1), indicating that in this case study, the consumption of water dropwort used to purify livestock wastewater was safe for humans considering accumulated antibiotics. ARGs were closely correlated between livestock wastewater and water dropwort, with the results showing that all 13 ARGs detected in the livestock wastewater were also found in the water dropwort. Tetracycline resistance genes were more abundant than the other ARGs in both the livestock wastewater and water dropwort. The estimated daily intake of ARGs in water dropwort for humans ranged from 2.06 × 106 to 7.75 × 1012 copies g−1, suggesting the potential risk of intaking ARGs in water dropwort cannot be ignored. Although the safety of consuming water dropwort used to purify livestock wastewater, considering accumulated antibiotics and ARGs, was assessed in this study, more studies should be conducted to ensure we fully understand the health risks.

Removal effects of a biomass bottom ash composite on tailwater phosphate and its application in a rural sewage treatment plant

Tailwater phosphate from sewage treatment plants and biomass bottom ash (BA) from power plants has become a global concern for the sustainable environmental development and resource management. However, there are large gaps in the understanding of the removal mechanisms and application conditions of BA on tailwater phosphate. In this study, the removal effect and mechanism of BA and its composites were fully discussed using a series of experiments, including adsorption, desorption, characterization, and incubation experiments. It was found that the combination of BA and red soil at a rate of 4:1 (C_BA) could remove 92.44% of phosphate from tailwater in 3-10 h. Its adsorption process was well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm adsorption models. The mechanism of phosphate adsorption primarily included ligand exchange, physical adsorption, chemical precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and ion exchange. The C_BA could be used as a better substrate for constructed wetlands because it was effective under wide application conditions, which varying pH values (4.0-8.0), initial concentrations of tailwater phosphate (0.5-5.0 mg L^-1), and even extreme temperatures (heat and cold). Moreover, Hippuris vulgaris L. was optimized and combined with the C_BA to deeply remove 57.45-76.06% of phosphate from a rural sewage treatment plant. The phosphate concentration after treatment could reach below the limit values of the Grade III or IV standard (GB 3838-2002), though the C_BA contained and released phosphate. This study can help provide a recycling route for both BA and tailwater phosphate resources, extend the industrial chain of biomass power plants, and improve the surrounding water environment.

Experts' Perceived Patient Burden and Outcomes of Knee-ankle-foot-orthoses (Kafos) Vs. Microprocessor-stance-and-swing-phase-controlled-knee-ankle-foot Orthoses (Mp-sscos)

BACKGROUND

Patients with neuromuscular knee-instability assisted with orthotic devices experience problems including pain, falls, mobility issues and limited engagement in daily activities.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to analyse current real-life burden, needs and orthotic device outcomes in patients in need for advanced orthotic knee-ankle-foot-orthoses (KAFOs).

METHODOLOGY

An observer-based semi-structured telephone interview with orthotic care experts in Germany was applied. Interviews were transcribed and content-analysed. Quantitative questions were analysed descriptively.

FINDINGS

Clinical experts from eight centres which delivered an average of 49.9 KAFOs per year and 13.3 microprocessor-stance-and-swing-phase-controlled-knee-ankle-foot orthoses (MP-SSCOs) since product availability participated. Reported underlying conditions comprised incomplete paraplegia (18%), peripheral nerve lesions (20%), poliomyelitis (41%), post-traumatic lesions (8%) and other disorders (13%). The leading observed patient burdens were "restriction of mobility" (n=6), followed by "emotional strain" (n=5) and "impaired gait pattern" (n=4). Corresponding results for potential patient benefits were seen in "improved quality-of-life" (n=8) as well as "improved gait pattern" (n=8) followed by "high reliability of the orthosis" (n=7). In total, experts reported falls occurring in 71.5% of patients at a combined annual frequency of 7.0 fall events per year when using KAFOs or stance control orthoses (SCOs). In contrast, falls were observed in only 7.2 % of MPSSCO users.

CONCLUSION

Advanced orthotic technology might contribute to better quality of life of patients, improved gait pattern and perceived reliability of orthosis. In terms of safety a substantial decrease in frequency of falls was observed when comparing KAFO and MP-SSCO users.

NiCo2S4nanosheets decorated on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanospheres as advanced electrodes for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Taking advantage of both Faradaic and carbonaceous materials is an efficient way to synthesize composite electrodes with enhanced performance for supercapacitors. In this study, NiCo₂S₄nanoflakes were grown on the surface of nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanospheres (NHCSs), forming a NiCo₂S₄/NHCS composite with a core-shell structure. This three-dimensionally confined growth of NiCo₂S₄can effectively inhibit its aggregation and facilitate mass transport and charge transfer. Accordingly, the NiCo₂S₄/NHCS composite exhibited high cycling stability with only 9.2% capacitance fading after 10 000 cycles, outstanding specific capacitance of 902 F g^-1at 1 A g^-1, and it retained 90.6% of the capacitance at 20 A g^-1. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor composed of NiCo₂S₄/NHCS and activated carbon electrodes delivered remarkable energy density (31.25 Wh kg^-1at 750 W kg^-1), excellent power density (15003 W kg^-1at 21.88 Wh kg^-1), and satisfactory cycling stability (13.4% capacitance fading after 5000 cycles). The outstanding overall performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of the NiCo₂S₄shell and NHSC core, which endows the composite with a stable structure, high electrical conductivity, abundant active reaction sites, and short ion-transport pathways. The synthesized NiCo₂S₄/NHCS composite is a competitive candidate for the electrodes of high-performance supercapacitors.

Abundant Allelochemicals and the Inhibitory Mechanism of the Phenolic Acids in Water Dropwort for the Control of Microcystis aeruginosa Blooms

In recent years, with the frequent global occurrence of harmful algal blooms, the use of plant allelopathy to control algal blooms has attracted special and wide attention. This study validates the possibility of turning water dropwort into a biological resource to inhibit the growth of harmful Microcystis aeruginosa blooms via allelopathy. The results revealed that there were 33 types of allelopathic compounds in the water dropwort culture water, of which 15 were phenolic acids. Regarding water dropwort itself, 18 phenolic acids were discovered in all the organs of water dropwort via a targeted metabolomics analysis; they were found to be mainly synthesized in the leaves and then transported to the roots and then ultimately released into culture water where they inhibited M. aeruginosa growth. Next, three types of phenolic acids synthesized in water dropwort, i.e., benzoic, salicylic, and ferulic acids, were selected to clarify their inhibitory effects on the growth of M. aeruginosa and their mechanism(s) of action. It was found that the inhibitory effect of phenolic acids on the growth of M. aeruginosa increased with the increase of the exposure concentration, although the algae cells were more sensitive to benzoic acid than to salicylic and ferulic acids. Further study indicated that the inhibitory effects of the three phenolic acids on the growth of M. aeruginosa were largely due to the simultaneous action of reducing the number of cells, damaging the integrity of the cell membrane, inhibiting chlorophyll a (Chl-a) synthesis, decreasing the values of F₀ and F_v/F_m, and increasing the activity of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, and CAT) of M. aeruginosa. Thus, the results of this study indicate that both culture water including the rich allelochemicals in water dropwort and biological algae inhibitors made from water dropwort could be used to control the growth of noxious algae in the future.

Removal effects of different emergent-aquatic-plant groups on Cu, Zn, and Cd compound pollution from simulated swine wastewater

Aquatic plants play effective in removing heavy metal (HM) as a prominent factor of bioremediations, however, there are still knowledge gaps in species selection and configuration for high removal efficiency (RE) of compound HM and ornamental value. In this study, seven emergent-aquatic-plant species were configured into seven groups and planted in a simulated swine wastewater (SW) with Cu, Zn, and Cd for 75 days in summer. REs of Cu, Zn, and Cd were 45.06-86.93%, 42.40-87.22%, and 73.85-85.52% at day 75, respectively. Higher REs were observed from day 30-45 for Cu and Zn, whereas days 15-30 for Cd. The synergistic removal of Zn and Cu or Zn and Cd was almost observed (p < 0.05). The configuration of G5 (S. tabernaemontani, I. sibirica, and P. cordata) was generally efficient roles in the removal at day 45, with REs of 85.14%, 87.06%, and 83.56% for Cu, Zn, and Cd, respectively. The dry weight of roots, water NH₄⁺-N, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen acted on heavy-metal removal. During days 45-75, concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Cd in G5 were 0.52-0.66, 0.54-0.65, and 0.23-0.33 mg L^-1. The former two were below the limits of Grade Ⅱ (1.0 mg L^-1) and the latter was above the limits of Grade Ⅴ (0.1 mg L^-1; GB3838-2002). Thus, G5 could be optimal for Cu and Zn removal from simulated SW, however, efficient Cd removal is required to ensure efficient SW recycling.

Removal effects of Myriophyllum aquaticum on combined pollutants of nutrients and heavy metals in simulated swine wastewater in summer

Swine wastewater (SW) treatment by Myriophyllum aquaticum is an important biotechnology for its resource utilization. However, some knowledge gaps remain in compound-pollutant removal in SW, especially in practical applications. To clarify the responses of M. aquaticum to the compound pollutants as well as the related operational parameters in SW treatment, three initial doses (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 kg per pond in 150 L simulated SW) of M. aquaticum and a control (no plant; CK) were allocated to 12 ponds under a plastic roof in Nanjing city of Eastern China during 75 days in the summer of 2019. Results showed that M. aquaticum could be used as a pioneer plant to efficiently remove compounded pollutants of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and especially for heavy metals in simulated SW. Compared with CK, M. aquaticum assisted in improving the total N, NH₄⁺-N, NO₃^--N, NO₂^--N, and dissolved organic N by 30.1%, 100%, 100%, 97.6%, 20.2%, 39.8% whereas Cu, Zn, and Cd by 50.4%, 36.4% and 47.9% on average during the 75-day experiment in summer, respectively. Moreover, concentrations of Cu and Cd at day 75 were in the ranges of 1.92-2.82 and 0.64-1.47 g kg^-1 DW, respectively, exceeding the corresponding limits of the heavy-metal hyperaccumulator. For the operational parameters, the optimized initial dose was 1.0 kg per pond with M. aquaticum harvested after 45 summer days, respectively. Given that M. aquaticum has been widely used as animal feed in recent years and limit values for Cu and Zn in animal feed are not set in China, the toxicities of Cu and Zn should be assessed and the guideline of their limit values needs to be established for safe feed production. Interestingly, NH₄⁺-N could dominate the removal of heavy metals especially Cd in the simulated SW, however, related mechanisms are needed for further study.

Sources and trends of oxidized and reduced nitrogen wet deposition in a typical medium-sized city of eastern China during 2010-2016

Fluxes and composition dynamics of atmospheric nitrogen deposition play key roles in better balancing economic development and ecological environment. However, there are some knowledge gaps and difficulties in urban ecosystems, especially for small and medium-sized cities. In this study, both flux and composition (ratio of NH₄⁺-N to NO₃^--N, R_N) of wet-deposited dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, sum of NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N) were estimated and sources were identified at a long-term urban observation station in Tongling, a typical medium-sized city in eastern China during 2010-2016, respectively. Results showed that wet-deposited DIN fluxes were 33.20 and 28.15 kgN ha^-1 yr^-1 in Tongling city during 2010-2011 and 2015-2016, respectively. Compared to these two periods, both DIN and NO₃^--N fluxes decreased by 15.2% and 31.8% for a series of NOx abatement measures applied effectively, respectively. At the same time, the NH₄⁺-N flux remained stable and ranged from 19.53 to 20.62 kgN ha^-1 yr^-1, and the R_N increased from 1.7 to 2.2. Seasonally, winds from the southwest and west-southwest with higher frequencies and speeds in spring and summer brought more NH₄⁺-N and DIN wet deposition from an ammonia plant, which could threaten the safety of regional hydrosphere ecosystems. On the whole, the wet-deposited NH₄⁺-N was threatening regional ecosystems of both the hydrosphere and forest. The wet-deposited DIN including NH₄⁺-N in Tongling city stemmed mainly from a combined source of coal combustion and dust from Cu extraction and smelting, ammonia production, and roads. Therefore, production lines should be updated for Cu extraction and smelting industries, thermal power generations and the ammonia plant, old vehicles should be eliminated, and the use of new energy vehicles should be promoted for regional sustainable development and human health in the medium-sized city.

[Surgical procedures for the correction and stabilization of pes planovalgus]

The medial column of the foot is a relevant factor of the pathogenesis of pes planovalgus. Crucial anatomic structures are the tibiocalcaneonavicular ligament complex, the naviculocuneiform joints, including the ossa cuneiformia, and the first tarsometatarsal joint. A combination of bony and soft tissue reconstructive techniques must, therefore, be taken into account when treating pes planovalgus. The present article presents stabilizing and correcting surgical procedures for the medial column of the foot, including basic anatomy and biomechanics.

[Clinical strategies for preservation of the exposed implant in chronic wounds and wound repair]

Objective: To explore the clinical strategies for preservation of the exposed implant in chronic wounds and wound repair. Methods: From January 2016 to January 2019, totally 8 patients (4 males and 4 females, aged 10 to 73 years) sustaining postoperative chronic wounds with exposed implants were admitted to the Fourth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital. There were 2 cases of abdominal patch exposure after abdominal trauma surgery, 2 cases of titanium plate exposure post craniocerebral surgery, 3 cases of internal fixator exposure post orthopedic surgery, and 1 case of cerebrospinal fluid drainage tube exposure after craniocerebral surgery. The wound exudate was collected for bacterial culture on admission. On the basis of glycemic control and correction of anemia and hypoproteinemia, thorough wound debridement was performed as soon as possible and the wound area after debridement ranged from 2.0 cm×0.5 cm to 6.0 cm×5.0 cm. The wounds of 4 patients were immediately closed after debridement, including 1 case by primary closure, 1 case by primary closure after local filling of platelet rich plasma gel, and 2 cases by local flap transplantation, with flap size of 10.0 cm×8.0 cm and 12.0 cm×8.0 cm, respectively. The donor sites of flaps were sutured directly and all the incisions were treated with continuous vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) after surgery. The other 4 patients were treated with continuous VSD after debridement to improve the wound bed. The wound of 1 case healed gradually, 1 case received direct wound suturing, and the wounds of 2 cases were repaired with thin split-thickness skin grafts from the thigh or the head. The results of bacterial culture of wound exudate on admission, wound healing post surgery, and follow-up were observed and recorded. Results: The bacterial culture of wound exudate on admission was positive in 6 patients, and 10 strains of bacteria were isolated with Staphylococcus epidermidis as the main pathogen. All the skin grafts or flaps of patients survived post surgery, with the incisions and wounds healed and all the implants preserved. After 1 to 3 years of follow-up, no recurrence of wound was found in any patient. Conclusions: The postoperative chronic wounds with exposed implants can be closed in primary stage by direct suturing or flap transplantation if it is clean enough on the basis of thorough debridement. The wounds with large defects or serious infection can be treated with continuous VSD firstly and then closed with direct suturing or skin grafting for delayed wound closure, thereby to reach the treatment goal of preserving the implants and repairing the wounds simultaneously.

0450 Screening Method for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome by Patients’ Exhalant with TD-GC-MS System

Introduction

Human exhaled breath test is getting more important for non-invasive health monitoring and detecting method nowadays. The diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is often difficult to be confirmed from the daytime presentation and usually need the overnight polysomnography. The methods for OSAS screening are therefore potentials for the clinical practice in the near future.

Methods

In this research, a method of thermal desorption (TD) tendon with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system has been developed for screeing of OSAS patients. We detected the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the special designed experimental bags which collected exhaled gas. Then we compared the VOCs from normal control and OSAS group in order to find out the biomarkers which could be used to screen OSAS patients. Furthermore, the Reliable Number(N) was used to see how often the VOC identified in all the experients in OSAS group and was defined as the times of a single VOC identified devided by the times of total experiment in a single OSAS patient.

Results

While the reliable number been set as &#8805;50%, we found 8 VOC markers, including Pentane and Cyclopentyl acetylene, appeared more often in OSAS patients. When we raise N to &#8805;70%, we have only 3 markers remaining.

Conclusion

Based on this result, we utilize the artificial intelligence method, deep learning, to figure out whether the peak intensity of different biomarkers are related to the severity of OSAS.

Seasonal fluxes and sources apportionment of dissolved inorganic nitrogen wet deposition at different land-use sites in the Three Gorges reservoir area

To identify seasonal fluxes and sources of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) wet deposition, concentrations and δ¹⁵N signatures of nitrate (NO₃^-) and ammonium (NH₄⁺) in wet precipitation were measured at four typical land-use types in the Three Gorges reservoir (TGR) area of southwest China for a one-year period. Higher DIN fluxes were recorded in spring and summer and their total fluxes (averaged 7.58 kg N ha^-1) were similar to the critical loads in aquatic ecosystems. Significant differences of precipitation δ¹⁵N were observed for NH₄⁺-N between town and wetland sites in spring and between urban and rural sites in summer. For NO₃^--N, significant differences of precipitation δ¹⁵N were observed between town and rural sites in spring and between urban and town sites in autumn, respectively. Quantitative results of NO₃^--N sources showed that both biomass burning and coal combustion had higher fluxes at the urban site especially in winter (0.18 ± 0.09 and 0.19 ± 0.08 kg N ha^-1), which were about three times higher than those at the town site. A similar finding was observed for soil emission and vehicle exhausts in winter. On the whole, DIN wet deposition averaged at 12.13 kg N ha^-1 yr^-1 with the urban site as the hotspot (17.50 kg N ha^-1 yr^-1) and regional NO₃^--N fluxes had a seasonal pattern with minimum values in winter. The contribution to NO₃^--N wet deposition from biomass burning was 26.1 ± 14.1%, which is the second dominant factor lower than coal combustion (26.5 ± 12.6%) in the TGR area during spring and summer. Hence N emission reduction from biomass burning, coal combustion and vehicle exhausts should be strengthened especially in spring and summer to effectively manage DIN pollution for the sustainable development in TGR area.

Monitoring of lung malignant epithelial cells by gene methylation analysis in the conditionally reprogrammed cell cultures

Conditionally reprogrammed cell (CRC) technology is an effective method for culturing primary malignant cells and non-malignant epithelial cells in vitro. This can be useful for precision medicine applications, such as drug sensitivity assays. However, this approach is commonly hindered by the non-specific growth of non-malignant epithelial cells in CRC cultures and the lack of effective biomarkers/assays to distinguish them from primary tumor cells. In this study, we developed a DNA methylation-based, real-time PCR assay to investigate SHOX2 and PTGER4 gene promoters as sensitive markers for human lung cancer. We first found that in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) malignant lung samples, 90% (28/31) had increased SHOX2 and/or PTGER4 promoter methylation as compared with their adjacent non-malignant samples. We then applied this assay to fresh surgical tumors and found increased SHOX2 and/or PTGER4 promoter methylation in 80% (20/25) of tumor samples as compared with their corresponding adjacent non-malignant tissues. Increased methylation of SHOX2 or PTGER4 promoter regions was also detected in 52% (13/25) of CRC cultures. The presence of malignant cells was confirmed by growth in soft agar cultures, a hallmark of malignant transformation, as well by EGFR mutation analysis. These results demonstrate that SHOX2 and PTGER4 promoter methylation levels can be used to detect malignant lung epithelial cells in CRC cultures.

Atmospheric deposition of hazardous elements and its accumulation in both soil and grain of winter wheat in a lead-zinc smelter contaminated area, Central China

Hazardous elements (HEs) and its deposition from atmosphere have become a major healthy and environmental concern worldwide, however, the risks to food safety of deposited HE are still largely unknown, especially for wheat grains (Triticum aestivum L.). This research was to characterize atmospheric deposition of high HEs [such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As)] at deposited site (TS) and assess its impacts on the soil and winter wheat accumulation in a lead‑zinc smelter contaminated area of Central China. Results indicated that deposited As, Cd and Pb at TS site were 31.15, 15.94 and 281.86 mg m^-2 during the winter wheat growing season, contributing 86.9%, 81.7% and 80.4% to the annual total, respectively. Most of deposited HEs were retained in top 35-cm soil, resulting in soil Cd concentration above the national soil regulatory limit (0.6 mg kg^-1; GB 15618-2018). The newly deposited HEs could contribute 57.7-88.2% and 16.2-29.1% to total HEs of wheat grains in clean soil based on a soil transplanted experiment and in contaminated soil based on a two-year in-situ experiment, respectively. Moreover, the newly deposited HEs significantly increased HE concentration of wheat grain by 22.9-57.5% in the contaminated soil when an immobilizing amendment were applied (p < 0.05), and grain Cd concentration exceeded the national grain limit (0.1 mg kg^-1; GB 2762-2017). Thus, deposited HE could be accumulated in soil and wheat grain and decrease the remediation effectiveness of passivation amendments in contaminated soils, which would raise a public awareness of HE deposition and provide a scientific data in support of environmental pollution control and remediation.

Effects of Soil Amendments on Microbial Activities in a Typical Cd-Contaminated Purple Field Soil, Southwestern China

In this study, three soil amendments (inorganic, liming, or organic-inorganic materials) were used in a Cd-contaminated purple field soil to investigate their impacts on soil Cd availability, enzyme (urease, catalase, sucrase, and acid phosphatase) activities, microbial biomass (carbon/nitrogen) and type (bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes) in mustard and corn trials. Results showed that soil amendments generally decreased soil exchangeable Cd, fungi and bacterial populations while increasing the activities of all the four soil enzymes tested, microbial biomass carbon and populations of actinomycetes (p < 0.05). Soil pH and microbial biomass nitrogen did not exhibit any significant response (p > 0.05) whereas stronger effects appeared in soil organic matter and available nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium; p < 0.05). However, only soil available phosphorous significantly correlated with soil microbial activity in both mustard and corn trails (p < 0.05). Thus, application of phosphorous-containing amendments should be considered for promoting soil health in the remediation of the Cd-contaminated purple soils.

Asymptomatic malaria: building bridges with communities through patients in Côte d’Ivoire

Background

In malaria-endemic areas, asymptomatic carriers are a reservoir of parasites that contribue to the persistence of malaria transmission. In Côte d’Ivoire, this situation is poorly documented. The objective of our study was to assess the frequency and socio-environmental factors associated with asymptomatic malaria in the town of Assuefry, located in the northeast of Côte d’Ivoire, a region where malaria prevalence remains high.

Methods

A cross-sectional study in two stages was conducted from October to December 2018, first at the Urban Health Center (UHC) in Assuefry and then in the households. The sample size calculated for patients was 162 extrapolated to 201 people. All persons received at the CSU who had clinical symptoms of malaria and a positive Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) were included. In the households of these index subjects, a follow-up survey allowed active RDT screening for malaria among all household members with no clinical signs of malaria. The socio-environmental factors taken into account were: the area of residence (urban or peri-urban), domestic animals husbandry, water storage at home, nearby garbage dump, wastewater collection and disposal system, type of housing and number of people in the household.

Results

The frequency of asymptomatic malaria was 341 (38.8%) out of 879 household members visited. Both female and male gender was concerned (51% vs. 49%). The 5 to 25 years old group concentrated nearly 82% of all cases. Only domestic animals husbandry was associated with asymptomatic malaria at the household level (p = 0.021).

Conclusions

The high frequency of asymptomatic malaria found in this study is a challenge for the National Malaria Control Program in Côte d’Ivoire. This should be taken into account while organizing control strategies.

Key messages

The frequency of asymptomatic malaria in Côte d’Ivoire is high. Control strategies must take into account in the guidelines the challenges of detecting and treating asymptomatic malaria. For the judicious use of antimalarial drugs, any subject with a positive RDT without clinical signs of malaria should receive a ‘Drop - Thick’ before treatment.

Effects of simulated Cd deposition on soil Cd availability, microbial response, and crop Cd uptake in the passivation-remediation process of Cd-contaminated purple soil

Atmospheric deposition of heavy metals such as Cd is a threat to ecosystems and food safety. Our knowledge is still limited about the effectiveness of remediation process for Cd-contaminated agro-soils under atmospheric Cd deposition. In this study, eight soil amendments were used in a Cd-contaminated purple soil to investigate their impacts on soil Cd availability, microbial response, and Cd uptake by mustard and corn plants via simulating the atmospheric Cd deposition under laboratory incubation and greenhouse conditions. Results showed that the simulated atmospheric Cd deposition increased the soil high-risk Cd (HR, exchangeable and carbonate Cd) and decreased soil medium-risk Cd fraction (MR, bound to Fe/Mn oxide and organic Cd), and the largest direct effects on crop Cd uptakes were 0.94 and 0.66 for mustard and corn based on the path-coefficient analysis, respectively. Generally, Cd deposition led to decreasing soil microbial biomass carbon, populations of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes, and enzyme activities of urease, catalase, sucrase, and acid phosphatase whereas increasing soil microbial biomass nitrogen. Compared with control and lime treatments, an organic-inorganic combined preparation (OCP) appeared to be effective for remediation of the Cd-contaminated purple soil due to its potential to increase the HR-Cd and reduce both MR-Cd and crop Cd uptake, as accompanied by its neutral effects on soil bacterial alpha diversity and community structure. Results also indicated that application of nitrogen fertilizers should be considered for remediation of the Cd-contaminated soils as nitrogen inputs were demonstrated to promote soil health under elevated Cd condition.

Nonlinear effects of increasing nitrogen deposition on rice growth and heavy metal uptake in a red soil ecosystem of southeastern China

With the population growth, urbanization and industrialization, China has become a hotspot of atmospheric deposition nitrogen (ADN), which is a threat to ecosystem and food safety. However, the impacts of increased ADN on rice growth and grain metal content are little studied. Based on previous long-term ADN studies, greenhouse experiment was conducted with four simulated ADN rates of 0, 30, 60 and 90 kg N ha^-1 yr^-1 (CK, N₁, N₂ and N₃ as δ¹⁵N, respectively) to assess rice growth and metal uptake in a red soil ecosystem of southeast China during 2016-2017. Results showed that simulated ADN could promote rice growth and increase yields by 15.68-24.41% (except N₂) and accumulations of cadmium (Cd) or copper (Cu) in organs. However, there was no linear relationship between ADN rate and rice growth or Cd or Cu uptake. The ¹⁵N-ADN was mainly accumulated in roots (21.31-67.86%) and grains (25.26-49.35%), while Cd and Cu were primarily accumulated in roots (78.86-93.44% and 90.00-96.24%, respectively). ¹⁵N-ADN and Cd accumulations in roots were significantly different between the two growing seasons (p < 0.05), implying the accumulative effects of ADN. Data also indicated the synergetic effect between accumulations of ¹⁵N-ADN and soil Cd and Cu. This study demonstrated that increasing ADN could potentially enhance Cd or Cu uptake in rice grain and threaten rice grain safety. However, related nonlinear mechanism is still needed to be discussed between increasing ADN and rice response in the future.

Subjective outcome following neurostimulator implantation as drop foot therapy due to lesions in the central nervous system-midterm results

BACKGROUND

Drop foot can be caused by many conditions. Stroke is one of the major causes of drop foot and 5% of stroke survivors suffer from hemiplegia, which in some cases, can manifest as drop foot. The abnormal gait resulting from the lack of innervation of the extensor muscles may result in a secondary malposition of the foot and lead to a steppage gait. Among the several therapy options for the treatment of drop foot, functional electrostimulation (FES) with a transcutaneous peroneal nerve stimulator (tPNS) or an implantable peroneal nerve stimulator (iPNS) represents the two recent approaches.

OBJECTIVE

Although therapy with an iPNS has been proven to be effective, a subjective patient assessment has not yet been executed. The aim of this study was to assess the patient's satisfaction with the therapy by using two established surveys.

METHODS

The Rivermead Mobility Index (RMI) and the Reintegration to Normal Life Index (RNLI) were used for this retrospective study. The RMI includes 15 questions which are to be answered as either "yes" or "no" and given a value of 1 or 0, respectively, with a maximum of 15 points possible. The RNLI includes 11 questions which are to be answered with the use of a visual analog scale (VAS, 0 to 10 cm). In this case, a maximum adjusted score of 100 points is possible.

RESULTS

The total study cohort involved 56 patients treated with an iPNS. Thirty-five complete data sets for the RMI and 29 for the RNLI could be achieved. A significant difference in the total score of both surveys was observed between the deactivated and the activated iPNS (RMI: p = 0.02; RNL: p = 0.01).

CONCLUSION

A significant improvement in patient satisfaction was detected with the use of an activated iPNS after a mean time span of 4 years. Due to the marked mobility, an increase in the social satisfaction and integration could be achieved. Both aspects represent essential components for the recovery and quality of life of the patients.

Long-term spatiotemporal variations of atmospheric sulfur, nitrogen and particle pollutants in Chongqing, southwest China: implication of industrial transfer

Industrial transfer has swept through in China. However, there is still a knowledge gap about its environmental effects. In this study, industrial transfer status was assessed and evaluated by industrial ratios (%; the gross product contributions of the secondary industry to the whole industry) and the impact of such transfer on atmospheric environment (SO₂, NO₂, PM₁₀ (particles with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm), precipitations of SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, and NH₄⁺) in the 38 districts and counties in Chongqing was analyzed and discussed for the period of 2006-2015. Results showed that industries were transferred obviously from the main urban region (MUR) into the 1-h economic region (OHER). Atmospheric sulfur and PM₁₀ were efficiently put in control, but atmospheric nitrogen (NO₂; precipitations of NO₃^- and NH₄⁺) was increasing and posted a potential threat to air quality especially during 2011-2015. Correlations showed that industrial ratios had significantly positive relationships with concentrations of ambient SO₂ and PM₁₀ in the MUR and ambient NO₂ in the OHER (p < 0.05) while a remarkably negative one with concentrations of ambient SO₂ in the OHER (p < 0.05) during 2006-2015, implying that industrial transfer could be effective in transferring sulfur pollution but not as efficient in transferring atmospheric nitrogen and PM₁₀ pollutions as SO₂ between in the MUR and OHER. More measures should be taken to reduce nitrogen and PM₁₀ emission and a regional monitoring network of ambient NH₃ is in urgent need.

[Diagnostic and epidemiological features of the first two HIV-2 indigenous infections in Hunan province]

Objective: To study the diagnostic and epidemiological features of the first two HIV-2 indigenous cases in Hunan province. Methods: Blood samples from two individuals with "HIV antibody indeterminate" and HIV-2 specific band showed by HIV-1/2 western blotting method, were repeatedly collected and detected under HIV 1+2 strip immunoassay and PCR, in Changsha city, Hunan province, through March to November, 2017. An epidemiological survey was carried out at the same time. Results: Our findings showed that the two cases were sex partners, without histories of sexual contact with foreigners and the source of infection was unknown. Results from the HIV 1+2 antibody confirmation test showed that they were "HIV-2 antibody positive" . Through amplifying and sequencing the gag area of HIV-2 and BLAST, the similarity of HIV-2 strains presented as 98%. The results also showed that there were HIV-2 specific fragments in the two cases. Conclusion: HIV-2 indigenous cases had never been reported in China. These cases had brought new challenge on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS in China.

Genome-wide transcriptional analysis of submerged lotus reveals cooperative regulation and gene responses

Flooding severely limits plant growth even for some aquatic plants. Although much work has been done on submergence response of some important crop plants, little is known about the response mechanism of aquatic plants, i.e. lotus (Nelumbo nucifera). In this study, we investigated the genome-wide regulation lotus genes in response to submergence stress by high-throughput mRNA sequencing. A total of 4002 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in lotus upon submergence stress. Among them, 1976 genes were up-regulated and 2026 down-regulated. Functional annotation of these genes by Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis revealed that they were mainly involved in processes of oxidation-reduction, abiotic stimuli, cellular metabolism and small molecule metabolism. Based on these data, previous work and quantitative RT-PCR (RT-qPCR) validation, we constructed a cooperative regulation network involved in several important DEGs in regards to the antioxidant system, disease resistance, hypoxia resistance and morphological adaptation. Further work confirmed that several innate immunity genes were induced during submergence and might confer higher resistance to lotus rot disease. In conclusion, these results provide useful information on molecular mechanisms underlying lotus responses to submergence stress.

Identification of redox imbalance as a prominent metabolic response elicited by rapeseed feeding in swine metabolome

Rapeseed (RS) is an abundant and inexpensive source of energy and AA in diets for monogastrics and a sustainable alternative to soybean meal. It also contains diverse bioactive phytochemicals that could have antinutritional effects at high dose. When the RS-derived feed ingredients (RSF) are used in swine diets, the uptake of these nutrients and phytochemicals is expected to affect the metabolic system. In this study, 2 groups of young pigs (17.8 ± 2.7 kg initial BW) were equally fed a soybean meal-based control diet and an RSF-based diet, respectively, for 3 wk. Digesta, liver, and serum samples from these pigs were examined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolomic analysis to determine the metabolic effects of the 2 diets. Analyses of digesta samples revealed that sinapine, sinapic acid, and gluconapin were robust exposure markers of RS. The distribution of free AA along the intestine of RSF pigs was consistent with the reduced apparent ileal digestibility of AA observed in these pigs. Despite its higher fiber content, the RSF diet did not affect microbial metabolites in the digesta, including short-chain fatty acids and secondary bile acids. Analyses of the liver and serum samples revealed that RSF altered the levels of AA metabolites involved in the urea cycle and 1-carbon metabolism. More importantly, RSF increased the levels of multiple oxidized metabolites and aldehydes while decreased the levels of ascorbic acid and docosahexaenoic acid-containing lipids in the liver and serum, suggesting that RSF could disrupt redox balance in young pigs. Overall, the results indicated that RSF elicited diverse metabolic events in young pigs through its influences on nutrient and antioxidant metabolism, which might affect the performance and health in long-term feeding and also provide the venues for nutritional and processing interventions to improve the utilization of RSF in pigs.

Clinical and misdiagnosed analysis of primary pulmonary lymphoma: a retrospective study

Background

The primary pulmonary lymphoma (PPL), with a low incidence, was highly misdiagnosed in clinic. The present study analyzes the clinical features, laboratory and imaging data, pathologic characteristics, and summarizes misdiagnosis reasons of PPL cases, aims to provide a better understanding and increase the accuracy of early diagnosis and minimize the misdiagnosis of PPL.

Methods

The clinical data of 19 cases were collected from the first affiliated hospital of Wenzhou medical university (PRC) from April 2010 to May 2016. All cases were confirmed by pathology. The process of misdiagnosis was described. This study retrospectively analyzed the incidence, clinical presentation, laboratory examination, Chest CT scan and diagnosis of the cases.

Results

The symptoms of the 19 cases were dyspnea, fever, hemoptysis, chest pain or physical findings without obvious symptoms. Five patients were pneumonia-like, nine patients had lung single nodule or mass and four patients got pleural effusion, which were reported by computed tomography (HRCT) scan. There were 2 cases of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), and 17 cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). In NHL cases, 12 cases were confirmed mucosa associated lymphoid tissue B lymphoma type, 3 cases were confirmed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma and ALK positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma were one case separately. Clinical and imaging manifestation of PPL is untypical, but there are still some hints: 1) Fuzzy shadow at the edge of lung mass with air bronchogram; 2) Lung mass shadow stable for a long time; 3) Pneumonia-like changing without infections clinical and lab manifestation. Thirteen patients (68.4%) were misdiagnosed as pneumonia, lung cancer and tuberculosis initially. The term between initial diagnosis and final diagnosis lasted for half a month up to 2 years, with median time of 6 months. Two cases were misdiagnosed as tuberculosis. One case was misdiagnosed as small cell lung cancer.

Conclusion

Clinical and imaging manifestation of PPL is untypical. Biopsies should be taken actively if the imaging findings don’t match the symptoms or the anti-infection treatments to “lung infection” don’t work. Accurate diagnosis requires adequate tissue sampling with appropriate ancillary pathologic studies. If clinical manifestation and the diagnosis don’t match, repeated biopsy should be ordered.

Aberrant Thalamocortical Connectivity in Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy

The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional connectivity (FC) of thalamic subdivisions in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were acquired from 22 JME and 25 healthy controls. We first divided the thalamus into eight subdivisions by performing independent component analysis on tracking fibers and clustering thalamus-related FC maps. We then analyzed abnormal FC in each subdivision in JME compared with healthy controls, and we investigated their associations with clinical features. Eight thalamic sub-regions identified in the current study showed unbalanced thalamic FC in JME: decreased FC with the superior frontal gyrus and enhanced FC with the supplementary motor area in the posterior thalamus increased thalamic FC with the salience network (SN) and reduced FC with the default mode network (DMN). Abnormalities in thalamo-prefrontocortical networks might be related to the propagation of generalized spikes with frontocentral predominance in JME, and the network connectivity differences with the SN and DMN might be implicated in emotional and cognitive defects in JME. JME was also associated with enhanced FC among thalamic sub-regions and with the basal ganglia and cerebellum, suggesting the regulatory role of subcortical nuclei and the cerebellum on the thalamo-cortical circuit. Additionally, increased FC with the pallidum was positive related with the duration of disease. The present study provides emerging evidence of FC to understand that specific thalamic subdivisions contribute to the abnormalities of thalamic-cortical networks in JME. Moreover, the posterior thalamus could play a crucial role in generalized epileptic activity in JME.

Nutrients resorption and stoichiometry characteristics of different-aged plantations of Larix kaempferi in the Qinling Mountains, central China

Elucidating the stoichiometry and resorption patterns of multiple nutrients is of essential importance to holistically understanding plant nutrition and biogeochemical cycling. Although many studies on ecological stoichiometry have been carried out, surprisingly few of them were simultaneously done on the investigation of both nutrient resorption efficiency and stoichiometry for different-aged plantations of a perennial tree. Here, both green and senesced leaf samples were collected from four Larix kaempfer plantations aged of 8, 15, 22, and 32 years in the Qinling Mountains to examine nutrients resorption efficiency and stoichiometry characteristics. The results suggested that the nutrient concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al, and Fe in both green and senesced leaves of L. kaempferi (a deciduous conifer tree) did not show a regular change trends along the plantation ages in the Qinling Mountains. The concentrations of the most nutrients examined, except for Fe, in the green leaves were relatively lower than or close to the required physiological concentrations, suggesting a relative limitation of multiple nutrients exists in L. kaempferi for its above-ground biomass growth. The rank order of resorption efficiencies of four key nutrients (N, P, K, and Mg) was K (80.89%) > N (67.42%) > P (65.34%) > Mg (41.16%), whereas the nutrient Ca and Fe tended to accumulate in senesced leaves. Overall, the nutrient resorption efficiency of all examined elements did not exhibit a regular trend corresponding to the change of the plantation ages in L. kaempferi, but it was positively related to the nutrient concentrations in green leaves. The mean C:N and C:P ratios in the green and senesced leaves were significantly higher than those reported globally (on average). By contrast, the N:P ratio, at <14, was not only much lower than that reported for both China's flora and globally (on average), but it did suggest that the N nutrient limits growth of L. kaempferi in these plantations. Taken together, the results of this study are of substantial interest and value to forest managers and for the sustainable development of the Qinling forest ecosystems.

[Distal osteotomy for the treatment of hallux valgus (Chevron osteotomy)]

Distal osteotomies, like the Chevron osteotomy, is indicated for mild to moderate hallux valgus deformities. Splayfoot, painful pseudoexostosis, and transfer metatasalgia are observed in the clinical examination. Radiographic examination should be done with weight bearing in two planes. Preoperatively the intermetatarsal (IM), hallux valgus, and distal metatarsal articular (DMAA) angles should be measured. The operative technique is based on soft tissue and bony correction. Modifications of the osteotomy allow a shortening, lengthening, or neutral correction of the first metatarsal. With a modified Chevron osteotomy, an increased DMAA can be also corrected.

Identification of Submergence-Responsive MicroRNAs and Their Targets Reveals Complex MiRNA-Mediated Regulatory Networks in Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn)

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-coding RNAs with important regulatory functions in plant development and stress responses. However, their population abundance in lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn) has so far been poorly described, particularly in response to stresses. In this work, submergence-related miRNAs and their target genes were systematically identified, compared, and validated at the transcriptome-wide level using high-throughput sequencing data of small RNA, Mrna, and the degradome. A total of 128 known and 20 novel miRNAs were differentially expressed upon submergence. We identified 629 target transcripts for these submergence-responsive miRNAs. Based on the miRNA expression profiles and GO and KEGG annotation of miRNA target genes, we suggest possible molecular responses and physiological changes of lotus in response to submergence. Several metabolic, physiological and morphological adaptations-related miRNAs, i.e., NNU_far-miR159, NNU_gma-miR393h, and NNU_aly-miR319c-3p, were found to play important regulatory roles in lotus response to submergence. This work will contribute to a better understanding of miRNA-regulated adaption responses of lotus to submergence stress.
