Nonspherical noble metal nanoparticles: colloid-chemical synthesis and morphology control

Controlled nanocrystallization of gold nanoclusters within surfactant envelopes: enhancing aggregation-induced emission in solution

The nanocrystallization of functional molecules has been a subject of recent interest in the current development of nanotechnology. Herein, we report the unprecedented synthesis of single nanocrystals of a molecular gold nanocluster in a homogeneous solution by using surfactant-based nano-envelopes. The co-assembling of a Au8 nanocluster carrying lipophilic phosphine ligands with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in an aqueous solution results in the formation of sphere-shaped amorphous nano-aggregates coated with the surfactant. Upon sonication, the spherical amorphous aggregates are smoothly shape-shifted into discrete rhombic nanocrystals, which can be tracked by TEM and solution XRD. The transformation into single nanocrystals occurs exclusively without further growth or agglomeration, implying that the crystal growth is restricted within the surfactant nano-envelopes. The robust but flexible nature of the wrapped surfactant is likely responsible for the controlled crystallization. We also demonstrate that the amorphous-to-nanocrystalline transition in solution remarkably enhances the photoluminescence emission from the nanocluster, providing a clear example of crystallization-induced emission enhancement. Notably, the obtained nanocrystals showed high stability in solution and retained their shape, size, and PL intensity even after several months, owing to the densely packed surfactant shell. The present surfactant-directed nanocrystallization method may be applicable to other molecular species to contribute to the development of nanocluster science as well as the designed synthesis of nanomaterials.

Chiral silver nanoparticles with surface-anchored L(D)-Cys exhibit dissimilar biological characteristics in vitro but not in vivo

This work investigated the influence of surface chirality on cellular internalization, cytotoxicity, and tissue distribution of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). D-cysteine and L-cysteine are chiral forms of the amino acid cysteine. These enantiomers exhibit distinct spatial arrangements, with D-cysteine having a different configuration from L-cysteine. This structural dissimilarity can lead to variations in how these forms interact with biological systems, potentially impacting their cytotoxic responses. Four distinct types of AgNPs were synthesized, each possessing a unique surface coating: pristine AgNPs (pAgNPs), L-cysteine coated AgNPs (AgNPs@L-Cys), D-cysteine coated AgNPs (AgNPs@D-Cys), and racemic AgNPs coated with both L-Cys and D-Cys (AgNPs@L/D-Cys). We found chiral-dependent cytotoxicity of AgNPs on J774A.1 cells. Specifically, AgNPs@L-Cys exhibited the highest toxicity, and AgNPs@D-Cys exhibited the lowest toxicity. Meanwhile, the cellular uptake of the AgNPs correlated nicely with their cytotoxicity, with AgNPs@L-Cys being internalized to the greatest extent while AgNPs@D-Cys displays the least internalization. Scavenger receptors and clathrin predominantly mediate the cellular internalization of these AgNPs. Strikingly, the dissimilar cellular internalization and cytotoxicity of AgNPs with different chirality were eliminated upon protein corona coverage. Notably, following intravenous injection in mice, these four types of AgNPs showed similar patterns among various organs due to the inevitable protein adsorption in the bloodstream. These findings underscored the pivotal role of surface chirality in governing the biological interactions and toxicity of AgNPs.

Rice seeds biofortification using biogenic ıron oxide nanoparticles synthesized by using Glycyrrhiza glabra: a study on growth and yield ımprovement

Iron, a crucial micronutrient, is an integral element of biotic vitality. The scarcity of iron in the soil creates agronomic challenges and has a detrimental impact on crop vigour and chlorophyll formation. Utilizing iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) via nanopriming emerges as an innovative method to enhance agricultural efficiency and crop health. The objective of this study was to synthesize biogenic IONPs from Glycyrrhiza glabra (G. glabra) plant extract using green chemistry and to evaluate their nanopriming effects on rice seed iron levels and growth. The synthesized IONPs were analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) techniques. The UV-Vis peak at 280 nm revealed the formation of IONPs. SEM and TEM showed that the nanoparticles were spherical and had an average diameter of 23.8 nm. Nanopriming resulted in a substantial enhancement in growth, as seen by a 9.25% and 22.8% increase in shoot lengths for the 50 ppm and 100 ppm treatments, respectively. The yield metrics showed a positive correlation with the concentrations of IONPs. The 1000-grain weight and spike length observed a maximum increase of 193.75% and 97.73%, respectively, at the highest concentration of IONPs. The study indicates that G. glabra synthesized IONPs as a nanopriming agent significantly increased rice seeds' growth and iron content. This suggests that there is a relationship between the dosage of IONPs and their potential for improving agricultural biofortification.

Synthesis of Gold Clusters and Nanoparticles Using Cinnamon Extract-A Mechanism and Kinetics Study

In this work, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, High Resolution Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopes and selected experimental conditions were used to screen the colloidal system. The obtained results complement the established knowledge regarding the mechanism of nanoparticle formation. The process of gold nanoparticles formation involves a two-step reduction of Au ions to Au(0); atom association and metastable cluster formation; autocatalytic cluster growth; ultra-small particle formation (1-2 nm, in diameter); particle growth and larger particles formation; and further autocatalytic crystal growth (D > 100 nm). As a reductant of Au(III) ions, a cinnamon extract was used. It was confirmed that eugenol as one of the cinnamon extract compounds is responsible for fast Au(III) ion reduction, whereas cinnamaldehyde acts as a gold-particle stabilizer. Spectrophotometry studies were carried out to track kinetic traces of gold nanoparticle (D > 2 nm) formation in the colloidal solution. Using the Watzky-Finke model, the rate constants of nucleation and autocatalytic growth were determined. Moreover, the values of energy, enthalpy and entropy of activation for stages related to the process of nanoparticle formation (Index 1 relates to nucleation, and Index 2 relates to the growth) were determined and found to be E1 = 70.6 kJ, E2 = 19.6 kJ, ΔH1 = 67.9 kJ/mol, ΔH2 = 17 kJ/mol, ΔS1 = -76.2 J/(K·mol), ΔS2 = -204.2 J/(K·mol), respectively. In this work the limitation of each technique (spectrophotometry vs. HRSTEM) as a complex tool to understand the dynamic of the colloidal system was discussed.

Constructing perfect cubic Ag-Cu alloyed nanoclusters through selective elimination of phosphine ligands

The aspiration of chemists has always been to design and achieve control over nanoparticle morphology at the atomic level. Here, we report a synthesis strategy and crystal structure of a perfect cubic Ag-Cu alloyed nanocluster, [Ag55Cu8I12(S-C6H32,4(CH3)2)24][(PPh4)] (Ag55Cu8I12 for short). The structure of this cluster was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and further validated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The surface deviation of the cube was measured to be 0.291 Å, making it the flattest known cube to date.

SERS detection of foodborne pathogens in beverage with Au nanostars

The aim of this study is to develop a simple but rapid method for the determination of foodborne pathogens in complex matrices (beverages) by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) combined with Au nanostar solid-phase substrates. The star-shaped singlet Au nanostructure was formed on the surface of a stainless steel sheet by chemical replacement reaction. Rhodamine 6G verified the sensitivity and reproducibility of this substrate, and the relative standard deviations of the SERS intensity at 1312 cm-1, 1364 cm-1, and 1510 cm-1 displacements were 3.40%, 5.64%, and 3.48%, respectively. By detecting four pathogens in beverage samples on Au nanostar substrates, the utility of the SERS assay was demonstrated, while the combination of principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) further enabled the isolation and identification of pathogens. The results of spiked beverages were validated in conventional culture identification and Vitek 2 Compact biochemical identification system experiments. Thus, this research demonstrated that Au nanostar substrates can be effectively utilized for the recognition of pathogenic bacteria and have immense promise to advance the progress of quick detection of foodborne pathogens and food safety.

Recent advances in synthesis and characterization of iron-nickel bimetallic nanoparticles and their applications as photo-catalyst and fuel additive

Iron-nickel bimetallic nanoparticles (Fe-Ni BMNPs) are prepared by combining two different metals by using the bottom-up approach. The resulting material has entirely different properties as compared to both the metals. The product is examined by using different analytical instruments such as.; scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), MDIJADE, ORIGIN pro to characterize their morphology, crystallinity and elemental composition and the final data has been statistically analyzed. SEM findings show that most nanoparticles are irregular in form and range in size from 10 nm to 100 nm. The findings of the TEM verified that the particles between 10 nm and 50 nm are irregular in size shape. The products acquired utilized as a fuel additive to monitor oil effectiveness by studying various parameters. The degradation of methylene blue dye depends directly on the concentration of the nanocatalyst. Different parameters also use the freshly prepared bimetallic nanocatalyst to investigate the efficacy of the kerosene fuel. By adding a tiny quantity of the nanocatalyst, the value of the flash point and fire point is significantly reduced. The nanocatalyst does not affect the cloud point and pour point to a large extent. The bimetallic nanocatalyst therefore has very excellent catalytic characteristics.

Lattice-Strain Engineering for Heterogenous Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The energy efficiency of metal-air batteries and water-splitting techniques is severely constrained by multiple electronic transfers in the heterogenous oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and the high overpotential induced by the sluggish kinetics has become an uppermost scientific challenge. Numerous attempts are devoted to enabling high activity, selectivity, and stability via tailoring the surface physicochemical properties of nanocatalysts. Lattice-strain engineering as a cutting-edge method for tuning the electronic and geometric configuration of metal sites plays a pivotal role in regulating the interaction of catalytic surfaces with adsorbate molecules. By defining the d-band center as a descriptor of the structure-activity relationship, the individual contribution of strain effects within state-of-the-art electrocatalysts can be systematically elucidated in the OER optimization mechanism. In this review, the fundamentals of the OER and the advancements of strain-catalysts are showcased and the innovative trigger strategies are enumerated, with particular emphasis on the feedback mechanism between the precise regulation of lattice-strain and optimal activity. Subsequently, the modulation of electrocatalysts with various attributes is categorized and the impediments encountered in the practicalization of strained effect are discussed, ending with an outlook on future research directions for this burgeoning field.

Advances in photochemical deposition for controllable synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts

Photochemical deposition has been attracting increasing attention for preparing nano-catalysts due to its mild reaction conditions, simplicity, green and safe characteristics, and potential for various applications in photocatalysis, thermal catalysis, and electrocatalysis. In this review, we provide an overview of recent advances in photochemical deposition methods for fabricating heterogeneous catalysts, and summarize the factors that influence the nucleation and growth of metal nanoparticles during the photochemical process. Specifically, we focus on the various factors including surface defects, crystal facets, surface properties and the surface plasmon effect on the size, morphology and distribution control of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles on semiconductors. The control of the photogenerated charges and the triggered photochemical reactions have been proved to be significant in the photochemical deposition process. Besides, the applications of the obtained catalytic materials in thermal catalysis and electrocatalysis is highlighted, considering that many reviews have covered photocatalysis applications. We first introduce the principle of photodeposition, nucleation and growth theory, and factors affecting photodeposition. Then, we introduce photodeposition methods that can achieve "controlled" photodeposition from a strategic perspective. Finally, we summarize the fruitful results of controlled photodeposition and provide future prospects for the development of controlled photodeposition technologies and methods, as well as the deepening and expansion of applications.

Highly sensitive and selective SERS substrates with 3D hot spot buildings for rapid mercury ion detection

Heavy metal ions, which are over-emitted from industrial production, pose a major threat to the ecological environment and human beings. Among the present detection technologies, achieving rapid and on-site detection of contaminants remains a challenge. Herein, capillaries with three-dimensional (3D) hot spot constructures are fabricated to achieve repaid and ultrasensitive mercury ion (Hg2+) detection in water based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The 4-mercapto pyridine (4-Mpy) serves as the Raman reporter with high selectivity, enabling the detection of Hg2+ by changes in adsorption configuration at the trace level. Under optimized conditions, the SERS response of 4-Mpy for Hg2+ exhibits good linearity, ranging from 1 pM to 0.1 μM in a few minutes, and the detection limit of 0.2 pM is much lower than the maximum Hg2+ concentration of 10 nM allowed in drinking water, as defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Simultaneously, combined with the theoretical simulation and experimental results, the above results indicate that the SERS substrates possess outstanding performances in specificity, recovery rate and stability, which may hold great potential for achieving rapid and on-site environmental pollutant detection using a portable Raman spectrometer.

Strain and Surface Engineering of Multicomponent Metallic Nanomaterials with Unconventional Phases

Multicomponent metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases show great prospects in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, owing to unique crystal structures and abundant structural effects. In this review, we emphasize the progress in the strain and surface engineering of these novel nanomaterials. We start with a brief introduction of the structural configurations of these materials, based on the interaction types between the components. Next, the fundamentals of strain, strain effect in relevant metallic nanomaterials with unconventional phases, and their formation mechanisms are discussed. Then the progress in surface engineering of these multicomponent metallic nanomaterials is demonstrated from the aspects of morphology control, crystallinity control, surface modification, and surface reconstruction. Moreover, the applications of the strain- and surface-engineered unconventional nanomaterials mainly in electrocatalysis are also introduced, where in addition to the catalytic performance, the structure-performance correlations are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this promising field are prospected.

Chemical and Physical Properties of Photonic Noble-Metal Nanomaterials

Colloidal noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) are composed of metal cores and organic or inorganic ligand shells. These NPs support size- and shape-dependent plasmonic resonances. They can be assembled from dispersions into artificial metamolecules which have collective plasmonic resonances originating from coupled bright and dark optical electric and magnetic modes that form depending on the size and shape of the constituent NPs and their number, arrangement, and interparticle distance. NPs can also be assembled into extended 2D and 3D metamaterials that are glassy thin films or ordered thin films or crystals, also known as superlattices and supercrystals. The metamaterials have tunable optical properties that depend on the size, shape, and composition of the NPs, and on the number of NP layers and their interparticle distance. Interestingly, strong light-matter interactions in superlattices form plasmon polaritons. Tunable interparticle distances allow designer materials with dielectric functions tailorable from that characteristic of an insulator to that of a metal, and serve as strong optical absorbers or scatterers, respectively. In combination with lithography techniques, these extended assemblies can be patterned to create subwavelength NP superstructures and form large-area 2D and 3D metamaterials that manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of transmitted or reflected light.

A Surfactant-Free and General Strategy for the Synthesis of Bimetallic Core-Shell Nanocrystals on Reduced Graphene Oxide through Targeted Photodeposition

Tunable physicochemical properties of bimetallic core-shell heterostructured nanocrystals (HNCs) have shown enormous potential in electrocatalytic reactions. In many cases, HNCs are required to load on supports to inhibit catalyst aggregation. However, the introduction of supports during the process of growing core-shell HNCs makes the synthesis much more complicated and difficult to control precisely. Herein, we reported a universal photochemical synthetic strategy for the controlled synthesis of well-defined surfactant-free core-shell metal HNCs on a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) support, which was assisted by the fine control of photogenerated electrons directly transferring to the targeted metal seeds via rGO and the precisely tuned adsorption capacity of the added second metal precursors. The surface photovoltage microscopy (SPVM) platform proved that photogenerated electrons flowed through rGO to Pd particles under illumination. We have successfully synthesized 24 different core-shell metal HNCs, i.,e., M_A@M_B (M_A = Pd, Au, and Pt; M_B = Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Ir, Ru, Rh, Ni and Cu), on the rGO supports. The as-prepared Pd@Cu core-shell HNCs showed outstanding performance in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to CH₄. This work could shed light on the controlled synthesis of more functional bimetallic nanostructured materials on diverse supports for various applications.

Selective and high-rate CO2 electroreduction by metal-doped covalent triazine frameworks: a computational and experimental hybrid approach

The electrochemical CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) has attracted intensive attention as a technology to achieve a carbon-neutral society. The use of gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) enables the realization of high-rate CO₂RRs, which is one of the critical requirements for social implementation. Although both a high reaction rate and good selectivity are simultaneously required for electrocatalysts on GDEs, no systematic study of the relationship among active metal centers in electrocatalysts, reaction rate, and selectivity under high-rate CO₂RR conditions has been reported. In the present study, we employed various metal-doped covalent triazine frameworks (M-CTFs) as platforms for CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) electrocatalysts on GDEs and systematically investigated them to deduce sophisticated design principles using a combined computational and experimental approach. The Ni-CTF showed both high selectivity (faradaic efficiency (FE) > 98% at -0.5 to -0.9 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and a high reaction rate (current density < -200 mA cm^-2) for CO production. By contrast, the Sn-CTF exhibited selective formic acid production, and the FE and partial current density reached 85% and 150 mA cm^-2, respectively. These results for the CO₂RR activity and selectivity at high current density with respect to metal centers correspond well with predictions based on first-principles calculations. This work is the first demonstration of a clear relationship between the computational adsorption energy of intermediates depending on metal species and the experimental high-rate gaseous CO₂RR.

Noble Metal Nanoparticles for Point-of-Care Testing: Recent Advancements and Social Impacts

Point-of-care (POC) tests for the diagnosis of diseases are critical to the improvement of the standard of living, especially for resource-limited areas or countries. In recent years, nanobiosensors based on noble metal nanoparticles (NM NPs) have emerged as a class of effective and versatile POC testing technology. The unique features of NM NPs ensure great performance of associated POC nanobiosensors. In particular, NM NPs offer various signal transduction principles, such as plasmonics, catalysis, photothermal effect, and so on. Significantly, the detectable signal from NM NPs can be tuned and optimized by controlling the physicochemical parameters (e.g., size, shape, and elemental composition) of NPs. In this article, we introduce the inherent merits of NM NPs that make them attractive for POC testing, discuss recent advancement of NM NPs-based POC tests, highlight their social impacts, and provide perspectives on challenges and opportunities in the field. We hope the review and insights provided in this article can inspire new fundamental and applied research in this emerging field.

Kinetically Controlled Synthesis of Nonspherical Polystyrene Nanoparticles with Manipulatable Morphologies

The morphology of nanoparticles plays a critical role in determining their properties and applications. Herein, we report a versatile approach to the fabrication of nonspherical polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles with controlled morphologies on the basis of kinetically controlled seed-mediated polymerization. By manipulating parameters related to the reaction kinetics including the concentration of monomers, injection rate of reactants, and reaction temperature, the monomers could be directed to polymerize on the selective sites of PS seeds, and after the removal of the second polymer, nonspherical nanoparticles with a variety of thermodynamically unfavored morphologies could be synthesized. We systematically investigated the formation mechanism of these nonspherical nanoparticles by monitoring the evolution of seeds during the reaction. Moreover, we have also successfully extended this strategy to reaction systems containing monomers with different combinations and seeds with different sizes. We believe this work will provide a promising route to the fabrication of nonspherical polymer nanoparticles with controlled morphologies for various applications.

Green synthesis of metalloid nanoparticles and its biological applications: A review

Synthesis of metalloid nanoparticles using biological-based fabrication has become an efficient alternative surpassing the existing physical and chemical approaches because there is a need for developing safer, more reliable, cleaner, and more eco-friendly methods for their preparation. Over the last few years, the biosynthesis of metalloid nanoparticles using biological materials has received increased attention due to its pharmaceutical, biomedical, and environmental applications. Biosynthesis using bacterial, fungal, and plant agents has appeared as a faster developing domain in bio-based nanotechnology globally along with other biological entities, thus posing as an option for conventional physical as well as chemical methods. These agents can efficiently produce environment-friendly nanoparticles with the desired composition, morphology (shape as well as size), and stability, along with homogeneity. Besides this, metalloid nanoparticles possess various applications like antibacterial by damaging bacterial cell membranes, anticancer due to damaging tumour sites, targeted drug delivery, drug testing, and diagnostic roles. This review summarizes the various studies associated with the biosynthesis of metalloid particles, namely, tellurium, arsenic, silicon, boron, and antimony, along with their therapeutic, pharmaceutical and environmental applications.

Optimized plasmonic performances and derivate applications of Au nanobipyramids

Gold nanobipyramids (AuBPs) with narrow size distribution and high monodispersity have driven intensive attention because they display more advantageous plasmonic properties than gold nanorods (AuNRs). Applications of AuBPs based on tunable plasmonic properties and enhanced electromagnetic fields are being widely investigated in recent years. In this article, we focused on the preparation of well-defined AuBPs using the seed-mediated method, the plasmonic properties, and the exploration of AuBP-supported derivatives. The synergetic contributions of penta-twinned and appropriate growth environment could produce high-purity AuBPs. Systematic comparisons of plasmonic properties between AuBPs and AuNRs are illustrated. In addition, the well-defined AuBPs can be used as a template to synthesize multi-metallic nanostructures. The development of the epitaxial growth based on the AuBPs and corresponding applications are introduced. This study will provide a guide for the fabrication of composite nanostructures and advance their plasmonic applications.

Do We Really Need Quantum Mechanics to Describe Plasmonic Properties of Metal Nanostructures?

Optical properties of metal nanostructures are the basis of several scientific and technological applications. When the nanostructure characteristic size is of the order of few nm or less, it is generally accepted that only a description that explicitly describes electrons by quantum mechanics can reproduce faithfully its optical response. For example, the plasmon resonance shift upon shrinking the nanostructure size (red-shift for simple metals, blue-shift for d-metals such as gold and silver) is universally accepted to originate from the quantum nature of the system. Here we show instead that an atomistic approach based on classical physics, ωFQFμ (frequency dependent fluctuating charges and fluctuating dipoles), is able to reproduce all the typical "quantum" size effects, such as the sign and the magnitude of the plasmon shift, the progressive loss of the plasmon resonance for gold, the atomistically detailed features in the induced electron density, and the non local effects in the nanoparticle response. To support our findings, we compare the ωFQFμ results for Ag and Au with literature time-dependent DFT simulations, showing the capability of fully classical physics to reproduce these TDDFT results. Only electron tunneling between nanostructures emerges as a genuine quantum mechanical effect, that we had to include in the model by an ad hoc term.

Advances in Nanomaterial-Based Biosensors for Determination of Glycated Hemoglobin

Diabetes is a major public health burden whose prevalence has been steadily increasing over the past decades. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is currently the gold standard for diagnostics and monitoring glycemic control in diabetes patients. HbA1c biosensors are often considered to be cost-effective alternatives for smaller testing laboratories or clinics unable to access other reference methods. Many of these sensors deploy nanomaterials as recognition elements, detection labels, and/or transducers for achieving sensitive and selective detection of HbA1c. Nanomaterials have emerged as important sensor components due to their excellent optical and electrical properties, tunable morphologies, and easy integration into multiple sensing platforms. In this review, we discuss the advantages of using nanomaterials to construct HbA1c sensors and various sensing strategies for HbA1c measurements. Key gaps between the current technologies with what is needed moving forward are also summarized.

Tailored synthesis of molecularly thin platinum nanosheets using designed 2D surfactant solids

The assembly of the surfactants has been utilized as unique templates for the controlled synthesis of metal nanosheets. However, current strategies for metal nanosheets have mainly focused on the liquid-phase surfactant assembly. Herein, we found the solid-state surfactants as designable crystals suitable for nanostructural control and proposed a novel synthetic route for molecularly thin Pt metal nanosheets using solid surfactant crystals as a precursor. The 2D surfactant crystals containing planarly arranged Pt complexes were prepared, and the subsequent UV-ozone treatment and reduction process allowed us to obtain Pt metal nanosheets. Pt metal nanosheets had a distinct morphology with various thicknesses (from 1.5 nm to 3.0 nm), characteristic of 2D surfactant crystals.

Fabrication of Gold-Based "Sphere-on-Plate" Hybrid Nanostructures with Dual Plasmonic Absorptions Covering Visible and Near-Infrared II Windows via the Volmer-Weber Growth Mode

We report a synthetic strategy to create gold(Au)-based "sphere-on-plate" hybrid nanostructures (SPHNSs). The surface doping of plate-like Au seeds with Pt/Ag atoms is found to be crucial to increase the lattice spacing, inducing island-like deposition of Au atoms via the Volmer-Weber growth mode. The resulting products are featured with the morphology that quasi-spherical nanoparticles are scattered over the nanoplates. Due to the presence of two distinctly dimensioned particles in one entity, the current Au-based SPHNSs exhibit unique dual plasmonic absorptions, where the visible absorbance centered at 546 nm is related to the size of the anchored particles. Arising from such a plasmonic advantage, the Au-based SPHNSs exhibit enhancement in photothermal conversion under laser irradiations at the wavelengths of both 808 and 1064 nm. The current work offers a feasible route to fabricate noble metal hybrid nanostructures involving zero-dimensional (0D) and two-dimensional (2D) structures, which could work as promising materials for photothermal conversion.

Biologically Derived Gold Nanoparticles and Their Applications

Nanotechnology is a rapidly evolving discipline as it has a wide variety of applications in several fields. They have been synthesized in a variety of ways. Traditional processes such as chemical and physical synthesis have limits, whether in the form of chemical contamination during synthesis operations or in subsequent applications and usage of more energy. Over the last decade, research has focused on establishing easy, nontoxic, clean, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly techniques for nanoparticle production. To achieve this goal, biological synthesis was created to close this gap. Biosynthesis of nanoparticles is a one-step process, and it is ecofriendly in nature. The metabolic activities of biological agents convert dissolved metal ions into nanometals. For biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles, various biological agents like plants, fungus, and bacteria are utilized. In this review paper, the aim is to provide a summary of contemporary research on the biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles and their applications in various domains have been discussed.

Opportunities and Challenges for Alternative Nanoplasmonic Metals: Magnesium and Beyond

Materials that sustain localized surface plasmon resonances have a broad technology potential as attractive platforms for surface-enhanced spectroscopies, chemical and biological sensing, light-driven catalysis, hyperthermal cancer therapy, waveguides, and so on. Most plasmonic nanoparticles studied to date are composed of either Ag or Au, for which a vast array of synthetic approaches are available, leading to controllable size and shape. However, recently, alternative materials capable of generating plasmonically enhanced light-matter interactions have gained prominence, notably Cu, Al, In, and Mg. In this Perspective, we give an overview of the attributes of plasmonic nanostructures that lead to their potential use and how their performance is dictated by the choice of plasmonic material, emphasizing the similarities and differences between traditional and emerging plasmonic compositions. First, we discuss the materials limitation encapsulated by the dielectric function. Then, we evaluate how size and shape maneuver localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) energy and field distribution and address how this impacts applications. Next, biocompatibility, reactivity, and cost, all key differences underlying the potential of non-noble metals, are highlighted. We find that metals beyond Ag and Au are of competitive plasmonic quality. We argue that by thinking outside of the box, i.e., by looking at nonconventional materials such as Mg, one can broaden the frequency range and, more importantly, combine the plasmonic response with other properties essential for the implementation of plasmonic technologies.

Solution-Based Synthesis Routes for the Preparation of Noncentrosymmetric 0-D Oxide Nanocrystals with Perovskite and Nonperovskite Structures

With the miniaturization of electronic-based devices, the foreseen potential of new optical nanoprobes and the assessment of eventual size and shape effects, elaboration of multifunctional noncentrosymmetric nanocrystals with ferroelectric, pyroelectric, piezoelectric, and nonlinear optical properties are the subject of an increasing research interest. Here, the recent achievements from the solution-based methods (coprecipitation in homogeneous and nanostructured media, sol-gel processes including various chemistries and hydro/solvothermal techniques) to prepare 0-D perovskite and nonperovskite oxides in the 5-500 nm size range are critically reviewed. To cover a representative list of covalent- and ionic-type materials, BaTiO₃ and its derivatives, niobate compounds (i.e., K/Na/LiNbO₃ ), multiferroic BiFeO_3, and crystals of lower symmetry including KTiOPO₄ and some iodate compounds such as Fe(IO₃ )₃ and La(IO₃ )₃ are systematically in focus. The resulting size, morphology, and aggregation state are discussed in light of the proposed formation mechanisms. Because of a higher complexity related to their chemical composition and crystalline structures, improving the rational design of these multifunctional oxides in terms of finely-tuned compositions, crystalline hosts and structure-property relationships still need in the future a special attention of the research community to the detailed understanding of the reaction pathways and crystallization mechanisms.

Prospecting Cellular Gold Nanoparticle Biomineralization as a Viable Alternative to Prefabricated Gold Nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have shown considerable potential in a vast number of biomedical applications. However, currently there are no clinically approved injectable GNP formulations. Conversely, gold salts have been used in the clinic for nearly a century. Further, there is evidence of GNP formation in patients treated with gold salts (i.e., chrysiasis). Recent reports evaluating this phenomenon in human cells and in murine models indicate that the use of gold ions for in situ formation of theranostic GNPs could greatly improve the delivery within dense biological tissues, increase efficiency of intracellular gold uptake, and specificity of GNP formation within cancer cells. These attributes in combination with safe clinical application of gold salts make this process a viable strategy for clinical translation. Here, the first summary of the current knowledge related to GNP biomineralization in mammalian cells is provided along with critical assessment of potential biomedical applications of this newly emergent field.

Drastic effects of an inert Pt wire on the redox behavior of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction

This research investigated responses of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction to the presence of a chemically inert Pt wire in solution. Experiments showed that connecting the Pt wire to a neutral ground caused a spontaneous drastic shift in the redox potential and might even induce complex behavior. Characterizations using an unstirred ferriin solution demonstrated the formation of a red colored propagating front at the grounded Pt wire, suggesting the reduction of ferriin to ferroin. Measurements with different combinations of electrodes in both stirred and reaction-diffusion media further confirmed the reduction of BZ metal catalysts at the Pt wire and the accompanying oxidation reaction at the reference electrode. The observed drastic change in redox potential and oscillation waveform can be understood based on the passive reduction reaction at the indicator electrode that is connected to the reference electrode through a potential meter. The obtained influence can be further manipulated by adding a resistor between the Pt wire and the neutral ground, making this convenient perturbation method attractive for the study of redox chemical reaction dynamics.

Complete surface reconstruction of nanoporous gold during CH4 pyrolysis

The catalytic activity and selectivity of metallic nanocatalysts can be controlled using physical and chemical methods to tune the exposed crystal facets. Nanoporous metals (NPMs) have unique bicontinuous structures, large specific surface areas, and high catalytic activities, and are widely used in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. However, owing to the complex surface topography of NPMs, it is difficult to regulate their exposed crystal facets over a large area. In this study, nanoporous gold (NPG) is successfully prepared with a complete regular surface that exposes the Au {111} and {100} facets through a methane pyrolysis reaction. The results of high-spatial and -temporal resolution in situ experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that C species significantly weaken the interaction between surface Au atoms with low coordination numbers and their surrounding atoms, which results in the migration and recombination of surface atoms. This research fundamentally clarifies the reconstruction mechanism of porous materials during methane pyrolysis and provides a theoretical basis for the targeted regulation of exposed NPM surfaces.

From flat to deep concave: an unusual mode of facet control

Au particles with rhombic dodecahedron outlines and deep cavities are obtained by epitaxial growth from a triangular nanoplate. An unusual "wrapping" growth that combines ligand-promoted facet-selective growth and site-specific deposition is proposed. Such a templateless growth not only allows the extreme defect-tolerance, but also broadens the synthetic control at the nanoscale.

Shape-Controlled Photochemical Synthesis of Noble Metal Nanocrystals Based on Reduced Graphene Oxide

The fabrication of supported noble metal nanocrystals (NCs) with well-controlled morphologies have been attracted considerable interests due to their merits in a wide variety of applications. Photodeposition is a facile and effective method to load metals over semiconductors in a simple slurry reactor under irradiation. By optimizing the photodeposition process, the size, chemical states, and the geometrical distribution of metal NCs have been successfully tuned. However, metal NCs with well-controlled shapes through the photodeposition process have not been reported until now. Here, we report our important advances in the controlled photodeposition process to load regular noble metal NCs. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is introduced as a reservoir for the fast transfer of photoelectrons to avoid the fast accumulation of photogenerated electrons on the noble metals which makes the growth process uncontrollable. Meanwhile, rGO also provides stable surface for the controlled nucleation and oriented growth. Noble metal NCs with regular morphologies are then evenly deposited on rGO. This strategy has been demonstrated feasible for different precious metals (Pd, Au, and Pt) and semiconductors (TiO₂, ZnO, ZrO₂, CeO₂, and g-C₃N₄). In the prototype application of electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction, regular Pd NCs with enclosed {111} facets showed much better performance compared with that of irregular Pd NCs.

T7 Phage as an Emerging Nanobiomaterial with Genetically Tunable Target Specificity

Bacteriophages, also known as phages, are specific antagonists against bacteria. T7 phage has drawn massive attention in precision medicine owing to its distinctive advantages, such as short replication cycle, ease in displaying peptides and proteins, high stability and cloning efficiency, facile manipulation, and convenient storage. By introducing foreign gene into phage DNA, T7 phage can present foreign peptides or proteins site-specifically on its capsid, enabling it to become a nanoparticle that can be genetically engineered to screen and display a peptide or protein capable of recognizing a specific target with high affinity. This review critically introduces the biomedical use of T7 phage, ranging from the detection of serological biomarkers and bacterial pathogens, recognition of cells or tissues with high affinity, design of gene vectors or vaccines, to targeted therapy of different challenging diseases (e.g., bacterial infection, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, inflammatory disease, and foot-mouth disease). It also discusses perspectives and challenges in exploring T7 phage, including the understanding of its interactions with human body, assembly into scaffolds for tissue regeneration, integration with genome editing, and theranostic use in clinics. As a genetically modifiable biological nanoparticle, T7 phage holds promise as biomedical imaging probes, therapeutic agents, drug and gene carriers, and detection tools.

Surfactant-free Synthesis of Spiky Hollow Ag-Au Nanostars with Chemically Exposed Surfaces for Enhanced Catalysis and Single-Particle SERS

Spiky/hollow metal nanoparticles have applications across a broad range of fields. However, the current bottom-up methods for producing spiky/hollow metal nanoparticles rely heavily on the use of strongly adsorbing surfactant molecules, which is undesirable because these passivate the product particles' surfaces. Here we report a high-yield surfactant-free synthesis of spiky hollow Au-Ag nanostars (SHAANs). Each SHAAN is composed of >50 spikes attached to a hollow ca. 150 nm diameter cubic core, which makes SHAANs highly plasmonically and catalytically active. Moreover, the surfaces of SHAANs are chemically exposed, which gives them significantly enhanced functionality compared with their surfactant-capped counterparts, as demonstrated in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and catalysis. The chemical accessibility of the pristine SHAANs also allows the use of hydroxyethyl cellulose as a weakly bound stabilizing agent. This produces colloidal SHAANs that remain stable for >1 month while retaining the functionalities of the pristine particles and allows even single-particle SERS to be realized.

Size Control in the Colloidal Synthesis of Plasmonic Magnesium Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles of plasmonic materials can sustain oscillations of their free electron density, called localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs), giving them a broad range of potential applications. Mg is an earth-abundant plasmonic material attracting growing attention owing to its ability to sustain LSPRs across the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelength range. Tuning the LSPR frequency of plasmonic nanoparticles requires precise control over their size and shape; for Mg, this control has previously been achieved using top-down fabrication or gas-phase methods, but these are slow and expensive. Here, we systematically probe the effects of reaction parameters on the nucleation and growth of Mg nanoparticles using a facile and inexpensive colloidal synthesis. Small NPs of 80 nm were synthesized using a low reaction time of 1 min and ∼100 nm NPs were synthesized by decreasing the overall reaction concentration, replacing the naphthalene electron carrier with biphenyl or using metal salt additives of FeCl3 or NiCl2 at longer reaction times of 17 h. Intermediate sizes up to 400 nm were further selected via the overall reaction concentration or using other metal salt additives with different reduction potentials. Significantly larger particles of over a micrometer were produced by reducing the reaction temperature and, thus, the nucleation rate. We showed that increasing the solvent coordination reduced Mg NP sizes, while scaling up the reaction reduced the mixing efficiency and produced larger NPs. Surprisingly, varying the relative amounts of Mg precursor and electron carrier had little impact on the final NP sizes. These results pave the way for the large-scale use of Mg as a low-cost and sustainable plasmonic material.

Plasmon-driven photocatalytic properties based on the surface of gold nanostar particles

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) generated in gold nanoparticles can induce the conversion of p-Aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules into p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) molecules by coupling reaction under the action of excitation light. Molecular detection of samples by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) techniques allows the study of their plasma-driven photocatalytic reaction processes. In this study, we used gold nanostars (GNS) as the substrate to study its catalytic performance and sensitivity. On this basis, catalytic substrates of gold nanospheres (GNPs) were prepared for comparison. The catalytic reactions of PATP molecules on each of the above two substrates were systematically investigated under 633 nm laser irradiation. The reduction process was subsequently observed by introducing NaBH₄ solution. The results show that photocatalytic reactions can be achieved on both substrates under laser excitation at the same wavelength. However, the catalytic and reduction reaction rates on GNSs as a substrate are much faster than those of GNPs. This phenomenon may be due to the abundant nano-branched microstructures on the surface of GNSs, which will generate more and stronger local surface plasma hot spots under the irradiation of excitation light. In order to test the above hypothesis, the surface electromagnetic field distribution of two nanostructures was numerically simulated using the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method. It is found that the star-like nanostructures not only have the same inter-particle hot spot system as the spherical nanostructures, but also have a large number of high-intensity single-particle hot spot systems arising from the abundance of branched nanostructures on their own surfaces. Compared with the spherical nanostructures, they are characterized by a dual hot spot system, which accelerates the photocatalytic reaction rate. The above experiments are of some reference significance for the in-depth study of multi-branched nanostructures and surface plasma distribution properties and their applications.

Highly active small Pd nanocatalysts obtained by visible-light-induced photoreduction with citrate and oxalate salts under batch and flow approaches

With a suitable combination of citrate and oxalate salts as photoinitiators, a visible-light induced Pd NP synthesis was conducted. Depending on the reaction conditions of the catalysis, the ligands may have a great impact on the catalytic activity.

A double helical 4H assembly pattern with secondary hierarchical complexity in an Ag70 nanocluster crystal

The hierarchical assemblies of well-defined structural nanoclusters can help to better understand those of biologically important molecules such as DNA and proteins. Herein, we disclose the synthesis and characterization of a new silver nanocluster, that is Ag₇₀(SR)₄₂(PPh₃)₅ (Ag70-TPP). Directed by the ligands, Ag70-TPP nanoclusters undergo self-hierarchical assembly into a highly space-efficient complex secondary structure of a double helical 4H (DH4H) close packing pattern. The chirality of Ag70-TPP, and the van der Waals forces interactions between the ligands are believed to drive its DH4H arrangement, and the observed interlocking of the phosphine ligands of adjacent Ag70-TPP nanoclusters also contributed. Overall, this work has yielded important and unprecedented insights into the internal structure and crystallographic arrangement of nanoclusters.

Phyto-fabricated Nanoparticles and Their Anti-biofilm Activity: Progress and Current Status

Biofilm is the self-synthesized, mucus-like extracellular polymeric matrix that acts as a key virulence factor in various pathogenic microorganisms, thereby posing a serious threat to human health. It has been estimated that around 80% of hospital-acquired infections are associated with biofilms which are found to be present on both biotic and abiotic surfaces. Antibiotics, the current mainstream treatment strategy for biofilms are often found to be futile in the eradication of these complex structures, and to date, there is no effective therapeutic strategy established against biofilm infections. In this regard, nanotechnology can provide a potential platform for the alleviation of this problem owing to its unique size-dependent properties. Accordingly, various novel strategies are being developed for the synthesis of different types of nanoparticles. Bio-nanotechnology is a division of nanotechnology which is gaining significant attention due to its ability to synthesize nanoparticles of various compositions and sizes using biotic sources. It utilizes the rich biodiversity of various biological components which are biocompatible for the synthesis of nanoparticles. Additionally, the biogenic nanoparticles are eco-friendly, cost-effective, and relatively less toxic when compared to chemically or physically synthesized alternatives. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles is a bottom-top methodology in which the nanoparticles are formed due to the presence of biological components (plant extract and microbial enzymes) which act as stabilizing and reducing agents. These biosynthesized nanoparticles exhibit anti-biofilm activity via various mechanisms such as ROS production, inhibiting quorum sensing, inhibiting EPS production, etc. This review will provide an insight into the application of various biogenic sources for nanoparticle synthesis. Furthermore, we have highlighted the potential of phytosynthesized nanoparticles as a promising antibiofilm agent as well as elucidated their antibacterial and antibiofilm mechanism.

Bottom-Up Synthesis of Helical Plasmonic Nanorods and Their Application in Generating Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Chiral growth and chirality transfer associated with plasmonic nanostructures have rejuvenated the field of chirality. As the precise regioselective growth of inorganic crystals into chiral shapes at the nanoscale is extremely challenging, "bottom-up" synthesis of intrinsically chiral nanoparticles with structural stability is obviously attractive and important. With the thiolated bimolecular cosurfactants, we demonstrated a chemical strategy for the synthesis of intrinsically helical plasmonic nanorods (HPNRs) with strong and tailorable plasmonic circular dichroism (PCD) responses, deriving from the zwitterionic interactions between the -NH₃⁺ and -COO^- groups of the cysteine molecules (Cys). The influence of structural parameters of HPNRs on PCD responses was analyzed systematically by theoretical simulations. Among the different structural parameters, the pitch depth was found to have the greatest impact on the PCD signals, in agreement with the experimental results. Moreover, the obtained HPNRs with the strong, tunable, and stable chiroptical properties were found to be able to induce circularly polarized luminescence of achiral luminophores. Due to the generality of this effect, this chiral plasmonic nanostructure may have great potential for use in the fields of chiral sensors, chiral catalysis, and displays.

Importance of Surface Topography in Both Biological Activity and Catalysis of Nanomaterials: Can Catalysis by Design Guide Safe by Design?

It is acknowledged that the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials (NMs) have an impact on their toxicity and, eventually, their pathogenicity. These properties may include the NMs’ surface chemical composition, size, shape, surface charge, surface area, and surface coating with ligands (which can carry different functional groups as well as proteins). Nanotopography, defined as the specific surface features at the nanoscopic scale, is not widely acknowledged as an important physicochemical property. It is known that the size and shape of NMs determine their nanotopography which, in turn, determines their surface area and their active sites. Nanotopography may also influence the extent of dissolution of NMs and their ability to adsorb atoms and molecules such as proteins. Consequently, the surface atoms (due to their nanotopography) can influence the orientation of proteins as well as their denaturation. However, although it is of great importance, the role of surface topography (nanotopography) in nanotoxicity is not much considered. Many of the issues that relate to nanotopography have much in common with the fundamental principles underlying classic catalysis. Although these were developed over many decades, there have been recent important and remarkable improvements in the development and study of catalysts. These have been brought about by new techniques that have allowed for study at the nanoscopic scale. Furthermore, the issue of quantum confinement by nanosized particles is now seen as an important issue in studying nanoparticles (NPs). In catalysis, the manipulation of a surface to create active surface sites that enhance interactions with external molecules and atoms has much in common with the interaction of NP surfaces with proteins, viruses, and bacteria with the same active surface sites of NMs. By reviewing the role that surface nanotopography plays in defining many of the NMs’ surface properties, it reveals the need for its consideration as an important physicochemical property in descriptive and predictive toxicology. Through the manipulation of surface topography, and by using principles developed in catalysis, it may also be possible to make safe-by-design NMs with a reduction of the surface properties which contribute to their toxicity.

Highly Porous Pt2Ir Alloy Nanocrystals as a Superior Catalyst with High-Efficiency C-C Bond Cleavage for Ethanol Electrooxidation

Achieving high catalytic performance with high CO₂ selectivity is critical for commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells. Here, we report carbon-supported highly porous Pt₂Ir alloy nanocrystals (p-Pt₂Ir/C) for an ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) that displays nearly 7.2-fold enhancement in mass activity and promotes antipoisoning ability and durability for the EOR as compared with the commercial Pt/C-JM. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits high CO₂ selectivity, 3.4-fold at 0.65 V (vs. SCE) and 4.1-fold at 0.75 V (vs. SCE) higher as compared with the carbon-supported porous Pt nanocrystals (p-Pt/C). The highly porous structure is composed of interconnected one-dimensional (1D) rough branches with an average diameter of only 1.9 nm, largely promoting Pt utilization efficiency and accelerating mass transfer. The 1D rough branch surface exposed many atomic steps/corners endowed with abundant high activity sites. Alloying with Ir can significantly improve the antipoisoning ability, durability, and C-C bond cleavage ability, thereby evidently enhancing its EOR performance.

Solvent assistance induced surface N-modification of PtCu aerogels and their enhanced electrocatalytic properties

A facile method involving the nitrogen modification of PtCu aerogel surfaces with N-methyl pyrrolidone as the sole nitrogen source is reported. The half wave potential (E1/2) of the PtCu aerogels was 0.932 V and the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) was 102.04 m2 g-1 for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and the mass activity (MA) for the methanol electrooxidation reaction (MOR) was measured to be 4.08 A mg-1, values better than those of a commercial Pt/C catalyst and other reported Pt-based catalysts.
