Recent advances in metal oxide-based electrode architecture design for electrochemical energy storage

Construction of N-doped carbon encapsulated CoP hollow nanofibers as multifunctional electrode materials for potassium-ion and lithium-sulfur batteries

Herein, a composite of N-doped carbon coated phosphating cobalt hollow nanofibers (N/C@CoP-HNFs) was synthesized by electrospinning, phosphating, and carbon coating processes. When employed as multifunctional electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the N/C@CoP-HNFs demonstrated notable electrochemical properties. Specifically, it delivered an initial specific capacity of 420.4 mA h g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1, with a sustained capacity of 190.8 mA h g-1 after 200 cycles in PIBs, and a specific capacity of 1448 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.5C in Li-S batteries, which is considered relatively high for these types of battery technology. This good performance may due to the combination of the carbon nitrogen layer and cobalt phosphide bilayer hollow tube structure, which is conducive to telescoping the diffusion length of ions and electrons and buffer volume variation, and effectively inhibits the shuttle effect. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also used to explore the energy storage mechanism of the material. The possible adsorption sites and corresponding adsorption energy of K+ were analyzed, and the advantages of the material were explored by calculating the diffusion barrier and state density. The theoretical simulations further validated the strong adsorption capability of CoP for polysulfides. This work is expected to provide new ideas for new energy storage materials.

High-Performance Proton Field-Effect Transistor Based on Two-Dimensional Cd Vacancy-Resided Cd0.85PS3Li0.15H0.15

Ion transport is a critical phenomenon underpinning numerous biological, physical, and chemical systems. Proton transistors leveraging proton transport face significant limitations, such as a low on-off ratio and deficient carrier mobility, which restrict their applicability in biological and other scenarios. This study explores the use of two-dimensional (2D) vacancy-residing transition metal phosphorus trichallcogenide-based membranes as the active layer for proton field-effect transistors. The synthesized Cd0.85PS3Li0.15H0.15 membrane exhibits a well-organized layered structure and high hydrophilicity, with nanometer-sized interlayers containing interconnected water networks. These distinct features facilitate proton conduction, leading to a high proton conductivity value of 0.83 S cm-1 at 98% relative humidity and 90 °C, with an activation energy of 0.26 eV. The Cd0.85PS3Li0.15H0.15-based proton transistor demonstrates tunability via gate voltage, thereby enabling effective modulation of proton flow across source and drain electrodes. The transistor notably showcases superior switching characteristics, with an on/off ratio surpassing 5.51 and a carrier mobility of 8.84 × 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1. The underlying mechanism for this performance enhancement is attributed to electric-field-induced switching in Cd vacancies. This research boosts the development of highly versatile ionotropic devices by introducing advanced 2D ion-conductive membranes.

High-Energy Symmetric Li-Ion Battery Enabled by Binder-Free FeOF-MXene Heterostructure with Doubly Matched Capacity and Kinetics

Fluorides are viewed as promising conversion-type Li-ion battery cathodes to meet the desired high energy density. FeOF is a typical member of conversion-type fluorides, but its major drawback is sluggish kinetics upon deep discharge. Herein, a heterostructured FeOF-MXene composite (FeOF-MX) is demonstrated to overcome this limitation. The rationally designed FeOF-MX electrode features a microsphere morphology consisting of closely packed FeOF nanoparticles, providing fast transport pathways for lithium ions while a continuous wrapping network of MXene nanosheets ensures unobstructed electron transport, thus enabling high-rate lithium storage with enhanced pseudocapacitive contribution. In/ex situ characterization techniques and theoretical calculations, both reveal that the lithium storage mechanism in FeOF arises from a hybrid intercalation-conversion process, and strong interfacial interactions between FeOF and MXene promote Li-ion adsorption and migration. Remarkably, through demarcating the conversion-type reaction with a controlled potential window, a symmetric full battery with prelithiated FeOF-MX as both cathode and anode is fabricated, achieving a high energy density of 185.5 Wh kg-1 and impressive capacity retention of 88.9% after 3000 cycles at 1 A g-1. This work showcases an effective route toward high-performance MXene engineered fluoride-based electrodes and provides new insights into constructing symmetric batteries yet with high-energy/power densities.

High versatility of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste for the development of batteries, biosensing and gas sensing devices

Continuously growing adoption of electronic devices in energy storage, human health and environmental monitoring systems increases demand for cost-effective, lightweight, comfortable, and highly efficient functional structures. In this regard, the recycling and reuse of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste in the aforementioned fields due to its excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance is an effective solution to reduce plastic waste. Herein, we review recent advances in synthesis procedures and research studies on the integration of PET into energy storage (Li-ion batteries) and the detection of gaseous and biological species. The operating principles of such systems are described and the role of recycled PET for various types of architectures is discussed. Modifying the composition, crystallinity, surface porosity, and polar surface functional groups of PET are important factors for tuning its features as the active or substrate material in biological and gas sensors. The findings indicate that conceptually new pathways to the study are opened up for the effective application of recycled PET in the design of Li-ion batteries, as well as biochemical and catalytic detection systems. The current challenges in these fields are also presented with perspectives on the opportunities that may enable a circular economy in PET use.

Challenges and Breakthroughs in Enhancing Temperature Tolerance of Sodium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-based batteries (LBBs) have been highly researched and recognized as a mature electrochemical energy storage (EES) system in recent years. However, their stability and effectiveness are primarily confined to room temperature conditions. At temperatures significantly below 0 °C or above 60 °C, LBBs experience substantial performance degradation. Under such challenging extreme contexts, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) emerge as a promising complementary technology, distinguished by their fast dynamics at low-temperature regions and superior safety under elevated temperatures. Notably, developing SIBs suitable for wide-temperature usage still presents significant challenges, particularly for specific applications such as electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and deep-space/polar explorations, which requires a thorough understanding of how SIBs perform under different temperature conditions. By reviewing the development of wide-temperature SIBs, the influence of temperature on the parameters related to battery performance, such as reaction constant, charge transfer resistance, etc., is systematically and comprehensively analyzed. The review emphasizes challenges encountered by SIBs in both low and high temperatures while exploring recent advancements in SIB materials, specifically focusing on strategies to enhance battery performance across diverse temperature ranges. Overall, insights gained from these studies will drive the development of SIBs that can handle the challenges posed by diverse and harsh climates.

Designing 3D SnS@Cu-Ni Nanoporous Column Array Electrode for High-Capacity and High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries

Sn-based materials with high capacity showcase great potential for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Yet, the large volume change and limited ion/electron transfer efficiency of Sn-based materials upon operation significantly compromises the battery performance. In this study, a unique 3D copper-nickel nanoporous column array current collector is rationally developed via a facile template-free galvanostatic electrodeposition method, followed by electrodepositing SnS active material onto it (denoted as 3D SnS@CNCA). Excitingly, the morphology of the 3D SnS@CNCA electrode perfectly inherited the nanoporous column array structure of the 3D current collector, which not only endows the electrode with a large specific surface area to provide more active sites and sufficient ion/electron transport pathways, but also effectively alleviates the volume expansion of SnS upon repeated charge-discharge cycles. Therefore, the binder-free 3D SnS@CNCA electrode showcases a significantly enhanced Li storage performance, showing a high initial reversible capacity of 1019.7 mAh g-1 with noteworthy cycling stability (a capacity retention rate of 89.4% after 200 cycles). Moreover, the designed electrode also manifests high rate performance with a high capacity of 570.6 mAh g-1 at 4 A g-1. This work provides a novel design idea for the preparation of high-performance electrodes beyond LIBs.

Tungsten-Iron-Ruthenium Ternary Alloy Immobilized into the Inner Nickel Foam for High-Current-Density Water Oxidation

The pursuit of highly-active and stable catalysts in anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is desirable for high-current-density water electrolysis toward industrial hydrogen production. Herein, a straightforward yet feasible method to prepare WFeRu ternary alloying catalyst on nickel foam is demonstrated, whereby the foreign W, Fe, and Ru metal atoms diffuse into the Ni foam resulting in the formation of inner immobilized ternary alloy. Thanks to the synergistic impact of foreign metal atoms and structural robustness of inner immobilized alloying catalyst, the well-designed WFeRu@NF self-standing anode exhibits superior OER activities. It only requires overpotentials of 245 and 346 mV to attain current densities of 20 and 500 mA cm-2, respectively. Moreover, the as-prepared ternary alloying catalyst also exhibits a long-term stability at a high-current-density of 500 mA cm-2 for over 45 h, evidencing the inner-immobilization strategy is promising for the development of highly active and stable metal-based catalysts for high-density-current water oxidation process.

Electrochemically Dealloying Engineering toward Integrated Monolithic Electrodes with Superior Electrochemical Li-Storage Properties

Integrated monolithic electrodes (IMEs) free of inactive components demonstrate great potential in boosting energy-power densities and cycling life of lithium-ion batteries. However, their practical applications are significantly limited by low active substance loading (< 4.0 mg cm-2 and 1.0 g cm-3), complicated manufacturing process, and high fabrication cost. Herein, employing industrial Cu-Mn alloy foil as a precursor, a simple neutral salt solution-mediated electrochemical dealloying strategy is proposed to address such problems. The resultant Cu-Mn IMEs achieve not only a significantly larger active material loading due to the in situ generated Cu2O and MnOx (ca. 16.0 mg cm-2 and 1.78 g cm-3), simultaneously fast transport of ions and electrons due to the well-formed nanoporous structure and built-in Cu current collector, but also high structural stability due to the interconnected ligaments and suitable free space to relieve the volume expansion upon lithiation. As a result, they demonstrate remarkable performances including large specific capacities (> 5.7 mAh cm-2), remarkable pseudocapacitive effect despite the battery-type constitutes, long cycling life, and good working condition in a lithium-ion full cell. This study sheds new light on the further development of IMEs, enriches the existing dealloying techniques, and builds a bridge between the two.

Scalable solid-state synthesis of 2D transition metal oxide/graphene hybrid materials and their utilization for microsupercapacitors

Two-dimensional metal oxide (MO) nanostructures have unique properties compared with their bulk or 0D and 1D (nanoparticle and nanowire) counterparts. Their abundant surface area and atomically thin 2D structure are advantageous for their applications in catalysis and energy, as well as integration with 2D layered materials such as graphene and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). However, fast and scalable synthesis of 2D MOs and their nanocomposites remains challenging. Here, we developed a microwave-assisted solid-state synthesis method for the scalable generation of 2D MOs and 2D MO/rGO nanocomposites with tunable structure and composition. The structures and properties of 2D Fe2O3 and 2D ZnO as well as their nanocomposites with rGO were systematically investigated. The excellent electrochemical properties of such 2D MO/rGO nanocomposites also enable us to use them as electrode materials to fabricate microsupercapacitors. This work provides new insights into the scalable and solid-state synthesis of 2D nanocomposites and their potential applications in catalysis, energy conversion and storage.

HsGDY 3D Framework-Encapsulated Cu2O Quantum Dots for High-Efficiency Energy Storage

Nanostructured electrode materials become a vital component for future electrode materials because of their short electron and ion transport distances for fast charge and discharge processes and sufficient space between particles for volume expansion. So, achieving a smaller size of the nanomaterial with stable structure and high electrode performance is always the pursuit. Herein, the hybrid electrode material system hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY)/Cu2O-quantum dots (QDs) composed of an active carbon substrate and vibrant metal oxide QD load was established by HsGDY and cuprous oxide. The HsGDY frame with conjugated structure not only delivers impressive capacity by a self-exchange mechanism but also characterizes a matrix to forge strong connections with numerous active Cu2O-QDs for the prevention of aggregation, leading to a homogeneous storage and transport of charge in a bulk material of crisscross structural pores. QD-based electrode materials would exhibit desired capacities by their large surface area, abundant active surface atoms, and the short diffusion pathway. The hybrid system of HsGDY/Cu2O-QDs delivers an ultrahigh capacity of 1230 mA h g-1 with loading density reaching up to 1 mg cm-2. In the meantime, the electrode exhibits a long cycle stability of over 8000 cycles. The synergistic effect endows the hybrid system electrode with an approximately theoretical energy density, suggesting the great potential of such carbon/QD hybrid material system applied for high-performance batteries.

The application of plasma technology for the preparation of supercapacitor electrode materials

With the rapidly growing demand for clean energy and energy interconnection, there is an urgent need for rapid and high-capacity energy storage technologies to realize large-scale energy storage, transfer energy, and establish the energy internet. Supercapacitors, which have advantages such as high specific capacitance, fast charging and discharging rates, and long cycle lifetimes, are being widely used in electric vehicles, information technology, aerospace, and other fields. The performance of supercapacitors is crucially dependent on electrode materials. These can be categorized into electric double-layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors, primarily made from carbon and transition metal oxides, respectively. However, effectively monitoring the physicochemical properties of electrode materials during preparation and processing is challenging, which limits the improvement of supercapacitors' performance. Plasma materials preparation technology can effectively affect the materials preparation processing by energetic electrons, ions, free radicals, and multiple effects in plasma, which are easily manipulated by operation parameters. Therefore, plasma material preparation technology is considered a promising method to precisely monitor the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of energy storage materials and has been widely studied. This paper provides an overview of plasma materials preparation mechanisms, and details of the plasma technology application in the preparation of transition metal hybrids, carbon, and composite electrode materials, as well as a comparison with traditional methods. In conclusion, the advantages, challenges, and research directions of plasma materials preparation technology in the field of electrode materials preparation are summarized.

Fabrication of well-aligned Co-MOF arrays through a controlled and moderate process for the development of a flexible tetrabromobisphenol A sensor

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) has attracted a great deal of attention due to its side effects and potential bioaccumulation properties. It is of great importance to construct and develop novel electrochemical sensors for the sensitive and selective detection of TBBPA. In the present study, cobalt (Co) based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized on carbon cloth (CC) by using cobalt nitrate hexahydrate and 2-methylimidazole. The morphological characterization was carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that Co-MOFs/CC have a leaf-like structure and abundant surface functional groups. The electrochemical properties of the sensor were investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The effects of different ratios of metal ions to organic ligands, reaction temperature, time, concentration, pH value of the electrolyte, and incubation time on the oxidation peak current of TBBPA were studied. Under the optimal conditions, the linear range of the designed sensor was 0.1 μM-100 μM, and the limit of detection was 40 nM. The proposed sensor is simple, of low cost and efficient, which can greatly facilitate the detection tasks of environmental monitoring workers.

A rapid supercritical water approach for one-pot synthesis of a branched BiVO4/RGO composite as a Li-ion battery anode

The application of novel one-dimensional (1D) architectures in the field of energy storage has fascinated researchers for a long time. The fast-paced technological advancements require reliable rapid synthesis techniques for the development of various Multi-metal oxide (MMO) nanostructures. For the first time, we report the synthesis of a single-phase hierarchical one-dimensional (1D) branched BiVO4-Reduced Graphene Oxide (BVONB/RGO) nanocomposite with different weight percent variations of RGO starting from 6, 12, 24, and 26 wt% using the supercritical water method (SCW). The affirmation of the sample characteristics is done through various nano-characterization tools that help in establishing the monoclinic crystal structure, and nano branch morphology along with its physical, and thermal characteristics. Further, the electrochemical behavior evaluations of the fabricated coin cells provide insights into the well-known superior initial cycle capacity of around 810 mA h g-1, showing the superior ability of BVONB structures in storing lithium-ions (Li-ions). Meanwhile, an improved cyclic performance of the pure BVONB/RGO with 260 mA h g-1 is evident after 50 cycles. Finally, the reported rapid single-pot SCW approach has delivered promising results in establishing a material process technique for multimetal oxides and their RGO nanocomposites successfully.

An efficient CuZr-based metallic glasses electrode material for electrocatalytic degradation of azo dyes

Metallic glasses have received a lot of attention on wastewater treatment due to their unique atomic structure, and the use of metallic glasses as electrodes has produced unexpected electrocatalytic degradation effects for many pollutants through combining with electrochemical technology. However, it still is a formidable challenge to find a metallic glass electrode material with both efficient and clean for the catalytic degradation of pollutants. In this work, the Cu55Zr45 metallic glassy ribbons are used as an electrode to degrade azo dyes and show the excellent degradation effect, which can reach 95.6% within 40 min. In the degradation process, almost no additives are produced and Cu55Zr45 metallic glassy ribbons have excellent effects under different pH conditions. Meanwhile, it exhibits good stability for degradation efficiency during the 8 cycle degradation tests of the amorphous alloy electrode. When the copper nanoparticles are exposed on the surface of the ribbons, the oxidized copper obtained synergistically produce activated radicals is the primary degradation mechanism, where the auxiliary degradation mechanisms include electron transfer and the promotion of active chlorine. This research develops a new type of electrode material for wastewater treatment, and the economy and high efficiency of Cu55Zr45 metallic glass endow it the expandable functional applications.

Construction of chitosan-supported nickel cobaltite composite for efficient electrochemical capacitor and water-splitting applications

The construction of highly efficient electrode material is of considerable interest, particularly for high capacitance and water-splitting applications. Herein, we present the preparation of a NiCo2O4-Chitosan (NC@Chit) nanocomposite using a simple hydrothermal technique designed for applications in high capacitance and water-splitting. The structure/composition of the NC@Chit composite was characterized using different analytical methods, containing electron microscope (SEM and TEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). When configured as an anode material, the NC@Chit displayed a high capacitance of 234 and 345 F g-1 (@1Ag-1 for GC/NC and NC@Chit, respectively) in an alkaline electrolyte. The direct use of the catalyst in electrocatalytic water-splitting i.e., HER and OER achieved an overpotential of 240 mV and 310 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, respectively. The obtained Tafel slopes for OER and HER were 62 and 71 mV dec-1, respectively whereas the stability and durability of the fabricated electrodes were assessed through prolonged chronoamperometry measurement at constant for 10 h. The electrochemical water splitting was studied for modified nickel cobaltite surface using an impedance tool, and the charge transfer resistances were utilized to estimate the electrode activity.

Boosting the high-rate performance of lithium-ion battery anodes using MnCo2O4/Co3O4 nanocomposite interfaces

Herein, a mesoporous MnCo2O4/Co3O4 nanocomposite was fabricated using a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method by maintaining only the non-stoichiometric ratio of Mn and Co (2 : 6), leading to an extra phase of Co3O4 coupled with MnCo2O4. Microstructural analysis showed that the obtained sample has a uniform nanowire-like morphology composed of interconnected nanoparticles. The stoichiometric ratio (2 : 4) was maintained to synthesize pure MnCo2O4 for comparative analysis. However, the obtained structure of pure MnCo2O4 was found to be irregular and fragile. After their employment as anode-active materials, the nanocomposite electrode showed superior high rate capability (1043.8 mA h g-1 at 5C) and long-term cycling stability (773.6 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.5C) in comparison to the pure MnCo2O4 electrode (771.5 mA h g-1 at 5C and 638.9 mA h g-1 at 0.5C after 500 cycles). It was believed that the extra phase of Co3O4 may also participate in the electrochemical reactions due to its high electrochemically active nature. Benefiting from the appealing architectural features and striking synergistic effect, the integrated MnCo2O4/Co3O4 nanocomposite anode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties and high cycle stability for LIBs.

High Energy Density Supercapacitors: An Overview of Efficient Electrode Materials, Electrolytes, Design, and Fabrication

Supercapacitors (SCs) are potentially trustworthy energy storage devices, therefore getting huge attention from researchers. However, due to limited capacitance and low energy density, there is still scope for improvement. The race to develop novel methods for enhancing their electrochemical characteristics is still going strong, where the goal of improving their energy density to match that of batteries by increasing their specific capacitance and raising their working voltage while maintaining high power capability and cutting the cost of production. In this light, this paper offers a succinct summary of current developments and fresh insights into the construction of SCs with high energy density which might help new researchers in the field of supercapacitor research. From electrolytes, electrodes, and device modification perspectives, novel applicable methodologies were emphasized and explored. When compared to conventional SCs, the special combination of electrode material/composites and electrolytes along with their fabrication design considerably enhances the electrochemical performance and energy density of the SCs. Emphasis is placed on the dynamic and mechanical variables connected to SCs' energy storage process. To point the way toward a positive future for the design of high-energy SCs, the potential and difficulties are finally highlighted. Further, we explore a few important topics for enhancing the energy densities of supercapacitors, as well as some links between major impacting factors. The review also covers the obstacles and prospects in this fascinating subject. This gives a fundamental understanding of supercapacitors as well as a crucial design principle for the next generation of improved supercapacitors being developed for commercial and consumer use.

CuO nanoparticles mixed with activated BC extracted from algae as promising material for supercapacitor electrodes

The present analysis aims to use existing resources to lower the cost of electrodes and reduce environmental pollution by utilizing waste materials like green algae. In the present research, the hydrothermal carbonization technique was utilized to synthesize a nano sized CuO mixed with activated biochar (CuO@BC) extracted from red sea algae (Chlorophyta). The CuO@BC sample was extensively examined using several advanced physical techniques, such as UV/Visible spectroscopy, FTIR, XED, HRTEM, SEM, EDX, BET, and TGA. The HRTEM indicated that the size of the particles is 32 nm with a larger surface area and without aggregations. The BET analysis of CuO@BC indicates that the material contains pores of a relatively large size and with a pore diameter of about 42.56 A°. The electrochemical analysis of CuO@BC modified glassy carbon electrode CuO@BC/GCE has been investigated using CV, GCD, and EIS techniques. This CuO@BC/GCE shows excellent electrochemical features that are significant for energy storage applications. The CuO@BC/GCE showed a specific capacitance of approximately 353 Fg-1 which is higher compared to individual materials. Overall, the research outcomes suggest that the CuO@BC/GCE shows potential for use in high-performance supercapacitors as energy storage systems that are eco-friendly and sustainable.

Hydrothermal Carbonization of Cellulose with Ammonium Sulfate and Thiourea for the Production of Supercapacitor Carbon

Doping with heteroatoms is the main method used to enhance energy storage with carbon materials, and polyatomic doping is one of the main challenges. Hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose was performed at 240 °C for 1 h. Ammonium sulfate and thiourea dopants were selected as the sources of inorganic nitrogen and organic nitrogen in the preparation of supercapacitor carbon. The effects of boric acid on the properties of the resulting hydrochar after KOH activation were examined. The results showed that the proportion of functional groups and the specific surface area of the activated hydrochar were reduced by the addition of boric acid, and the formation of micropores was inhibited. The hydrochar obtained from the reaction of cellulose and organic nitrogen compounds had a better pore size distribution and electrochemical properties after activation. The largest specific surface area (952.27 m2/g) was obtained when thiourea was used as the sole dopant. In a three-electrode system, the specific capacitance of the activated hydrochar reached 235.8 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. After 20,000 charging and discharging cycles at a current density of 10 A/g, the capacitance retention rate was 99.96%. Therefore, this study showed that supercapacitor carbon with good electrochemical properties was obtained by the direct reactions of cellulose with organic nitrogen compounds.

Recent Advances of Seed-Mediated Growth of Metal Nanoparticles: from Growth to Applications

Unprecedented advances in metal nanoparticle synthesis have paved the way for broad applications in sensing, imaging, catalysis, diagnosis, and therapy by tuning the optical properties, enhancing catalytic performance, and improving chemical and biological properties of metal nanoparticles. The central guiding concept for regulating the size and morphology of metal nanoparticles is identified as the precise manipulation of nucleation and subsequent growth, often known as seed-mediated growth methods. However, since the growth process is sensitive not only to the metal seeds but also to capping agents, metal precursors, growth solution, growth/incubation time, reductants, and other influencing factors, the precise control of metal nanoparticle morphology is multifactorial. Further, multiple reaction parameters are entangled with each other, so it is necessary to clarify the mechanism by which each factor precisely regulates the morphology of metal nanoparticles. In this review, to exploit the generality and extendibility of metal nanoparticle synthesis, the mechanisms of growth influencing factors in seed-mediated growth methods are systematically summarized. Second, a variety of critical properties and applications enabled by grown metal nanoparticles are focused upon. Finally, the current progress and offer insights on the challenges, opportunities, and future directions for the growth and applications of grown metal nanoparticles are reviewed.

Synergistic effects of nitrogen-doped carbon and praseodymium oxide in electrochemical water splitting

Hybrid materials featuring perovskite-type metal oxide in conjunction with heteroatom-doped graphene hold immense promise as alternatives to costly noble metal catalysts for electrochemical water splitting, facilitating the generation of environmentally friendly hydrogen. In this study, perovskite-type oxide containing praseodymium, barium, strontium, cobalt, and iron atoms dispersed in a carbon matrix as a catalyst is synthesized via annealing of the carbon material with substrates for the preparation of perovskite oxide. The mass ratio of reagents regulates the porous structure and elemental composition. The result of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), suggests that the hybrid catalysts exhibit intermediate HER kinetics compared to the commercial Pt/C and the catalyst without carbon. The Tafel slope for HER is lower for materials containing carbon, because of the improved reaction kinetics, facilitated proton transfer, and enhanced electrochemical surface area. Therefore, the study provides an effective strategy for the preparation of catalyst and their use as the active catalyst of water splitting.

Octahedral/Tetrahedral Vacancies in Fe3 O4 as K-Storage Sites: A Case of Anti-Spinel Structure Material Serving as High-Performance Anodes for PIBs

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted more and more attention as viable alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the deficiency and uneven distribution of lithium resources. However, it is shown that potassium storage in some compounds through reaction or intercalation mechanisms cannot effectively improve the capacity and stability of anodes for PIBs. The unique anti-spinel structure of magnetite (Fe3 O4 ) is densely packed with thirty-two O atoms to form a face-centered cubic (fcc) unit cell with tetrahedral/octahedral vacancies in the O-closed packing structure, which can serve as K+ storage sites according to the density functional theory (DFT) calculation results. In this work, carbon-coated Fe3 O4 @C nanoparticles are prepared as high-performance anodes for PIBs, which exhibit high reversible capacity (638 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1 ) and hyper stable cycling performance at ultrahigh current density (150 mAh g-1 after 9000 cycles at 10 A g-1 ). In situ XRD, ex-situ Fe K-edge XAFS, and DFT calculations confirm the storage of K+ in tetrahedral/octahedral vacancies.

A Generalized Polymer Precursor Ink Design for 3D Printing of Functional Metal Oxides

Three-dimensional-structured metal oxides have myriad applications for optoelectronic devices. Comparing to conventional lithography-based manufacturing methods which face significant challenges for 3D device architectures, additive manufacturing approaches such as direct ink writing offer convenient, on-demand manufacturing of 3D oxides with high resolutions down to sub-micrometer scales. However, the lack of a universal ink design strategy greatly limits the choices of printable oxides. Here, a universal, facile synthetic strategy is developed for direct ink writable polymer precursor inks based on metal-polymer coordination effect. Specifically, polyethyleneimine functionalized by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid is employed as the polymer matrix for adsorbing targeted metal ions. Next, glucose is introduced as a crosslinker for endowing the polymer precursor inks with a thermosetting property required for 3D printing via the Maillard reaction. For demonstrations, binary (i.e., ZnO, CuO, In2O3, Ga2O3, TiO2, and Y2O3) and ternary metal oxides (i.e., BaTiO3 and SrTiO3) are printed into 3D architectures with sub-micrometer resolution by extruding the inks through ultrafine nozzles. Upon thermal crosslinking and pyrolysis, the 3D microarchitectures with woodpile geometries exhibit strong light-matter coupling in the mid-infrared region. The design strategy for printable inks opens a new pathway toward 3D-printed optoelectronic devices based on functional oxides.

Exploring the redox characteristics of porous ZnCoS@rGO grown on nickel foam as a high-performance electrode for energy storage applications

A supercapattery is a device that combines the properties of batteries and supercapacitors, such as power density and energy density. A binary composite (zinc cobalt sulfide) and rGO are synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method and modified Hummers' method. A notable specific capacity (C_s) of 1254 C g^-1 is obtained in the ZnCoS@rGO case, which is higher than individual C_s of ZnS (975 C g^-1) and CoS (400 C g^-1). For the asymmetric (ASC) device (ZnCoS@rGO//PANI@AC), the PANI-doped activated carbon and ZnCoS@rGO are used as the cathode and anode respectively. A high C_m of 141 C g^-1 is achieved at 1.4 A g^-1. The ASC is exhibited an extraordinary energy density of 45 W h kg^-1 with a power density 5000 W kg^-1 at 1.4 A g^-1. To check the stability of the device, the ASC device is measured for 2000 charging/discharging cycles. The device showed improved coulombic efficiency of 94%. These findings confirmed that the two-dimensional materials provide the opportunities to design battery and supercapacitor hybrid devices.

Three-Dimensional Electrochemical Sensors for Food Safety Applications

Considering the increasing concern for food safety, electrochemical methods for detecting specific ingredients in the food are currently the most efficient method due to their low cost, fast response signal, high sensitivity, and ease of use. The detection efficiency of electrochemical sensors is determined by the electrode materials' electrochemical characteristics. Among them, three-dimensional (3D) electrodes have unique advantages in electronic transfer, adsorption capacity and exposure of active sites for energy storage, novel materials, and electrochemical sensing. Therefore, this review begins by outlining the benefits and drawbacks of 3D electrodes compared to other materials before going into more detail about how 3D materials are synthesized. Next, different types of 3D electrodes are outlined together with common modification techniques for enhancing electrochemical performance. After this, a demonstration of 3D electrochemical sensors for food safety applications, such as detecting components, additives, emerging pollutants, and bacteria in food, was given. Finally, improvement measures and development directions of electrodes with 3D electrochemical sensors are discussed. We think that this review will help with the creation of new 3D electrodes and offer fresh perspectives on how to achieve extremely sensitive electrochemical detection in the area of food safety.

Recent advances in supramolecular self-assembly derived materials for high-performance supercapacitors

The key preponderance of supramolecular self-assembly strategy is its ability to precisely assemble various functional units at the molecular level through non-covalent bonds to form multifunctional materials. Supramolecular materials have the merits of diverse functional groups, flexible structure, and unique self-healing properties, which make them of great value in the field of energy storage. This paper reviews the latest research progress of the supramolecular self-assembly strategy for the advanced electrode materials and electrolytes for supercapacitors, including supramolecular self-assembly for the preparation of high-performance carbon materials, metal-based materials and conductive polymer materials, and its beneficial effects on the performance of supercapacitors. The preparation of high performance supramolecular polymer electrolytes and their application in flexible wearable devices and high energy density supercapacitors are also discussed in detail. In addition, at the end of this paper, the challenges of the supramolecular self-assembly strategy are summarized and the development of supramolecular-derived materials for supercapacitors is prospected.

Nanoporous Conducting Polymer Nanowire Network-Encapsulated MnO2-Based Flexible Supercapacitor with Enhanced Rate Capability and Cycling Stability

Transition-metal-oxide-based electrochemical electrodes usually suffer from poor electron and ion transport, leading to deteriorated rate performance and cycling stability. Herein, we address these issues by developing a facile "conducting encapsulation" strategy toward a nanoporous PEDOT nanowire/MnO₂ nanoparticle/PEDOT nanowire composite electrode. Through encapsulation of the PEDOT nanowire network, the overall electrochemical performance of the resultant composite electrode is substantially enhanced. Specifically, the rate capability and capacitance retention are improved by ∼48.2 and ∼33%, respectively, which are 89.8% at 0.8-40 mA/cm² and 93% after 3000 charge/discharge cycles at 2.0 mA/cm², respectively. Moreover, the specific capacitance is increased by ∼6 times of that of the MnO₂@PEDOT NW electrode at ∼200 mA/cm². We find that a nanoporous conducting nanowire network that encapsulates a MnO₂ nanoparticle layer can provide efficient electron and ion transport paths and stabilize the structure of MnO₂ from collapse during charge/discharge cycling and mechanical deformation. This strategy can be applied to other pseudocapacitive material-based electrochemical electrodes, such as transition-metal oxides and conducting polymers.

Hydrothermal assisted synthesis of hierarchical SnO2 micro flowers with CdO nanoparticles based membrane for energy storage applications

Hierarchical nanostructures with appropriate morphology and surface functionalities are highly desired to achieve an optimized electrochemical property for active electrode materials. This work renders the facile hydrothermal synthesis of CdO, SnO₂, and CdO-SnO₂ nanocomposite, and their capacitive performance was tested. The formation of the pure samples and their composite was committed by low-temperature Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction studies which revealed the tetragonal and cubic structures of CdO and SnO₂ powder samples with good crystallinity and purity. The morphological postmortem reveals the formation of nanoparticles morphology of CdO with a highly smooth surface appearance. Besides, the SnO₂ illustrates the morphology of the micro flowers composed of ultrathin nanosheets. More specifically, the electrochemical properties indicate the pseudocapacitive charge storage mechanism based on cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry analysis. The CdO-SnO₂ composite electrode displayed a higher capacitance due to additional pores/space offered for active sites and continuously allowed electrolyte ions to interact with the inner/outer surface of the electrode. These exciting findings led us to design and fabricate battery hybrid supercapacitors (BHSC) from CdO-SnO_2, and activated carbon (AC), referred to as CdO-SnO₂//AC BHSC, attains a high power delivery (5717 W/kg), and a maximum energy density of 42 Wh/kg at low discharge rate. Noteworthy, a stable cycling performance was obtained with only 91.3% retention after 8000 cycling at a large discharge current of 10 A/g, denoting the magnificent durability of the active electrode material.

Enhancement of photoelectrocatalytic performance of copper cobaltate nanoflowers modified with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxylphenyl)porphyrin for methanol oxidation under light

With the continuously increasing global energy demand, there is an urgent requirement to find efficient methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) catalysts that can replace precious metals. In this work, we have elaborately integrated 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (H₂TCPP) with copper cobaltate (CuCo₂O₄), which possesses efficient separation of photogenerated charges and increased active sites. The mass activity of H₂TCPP/CuCo₂O₄ (534.75 mA mg^-1) toward MOR is higher than that of pure CuCo₂O₄ (291.75 mA mg^-1) under light. In addition, H₂TCPP/CuCo₂O₄ can catalyze the oxidation of other alcohols, such as ethanol, ethanediol, isopropanol, and glycerol. This study demonstrates that it is feasible to enhance the MOR activity by the modification of bimetallic transition metal oxides with porphyrins.

Regulating the thickness of the carbon coating layer in iron/carbon heterostructures to enhance the catalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction

The exploration of high-performance electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial and urgent for the fast development of green and renewable hydrogen energy. Herein, an ultra-fast and energy-efficient preparation strategy (microwave-assisted rapid in-situ pyrolysis of organometallic compounds induced by carbon nanotube (CNT)) is developed to obtain iron/carbon (Fe/C) heterogeneous materials (Fe/Fe₃C particles wrapped by carbon coating layer). The thickness of the carbon coating layer can be adjusted by changing the content and form of carbon in the metal sources during the fast preparation process. Fe/Fe₃C-A@CNT using iron acetylacetonate as metal sources possesses unique Fe/C heterogeneous, small Fe/Fe₃C particles encapsulated by the thin carbon coating layer (1.77 nm), and obtains the optimal electron penetration effect. The electron penetration effect derives from the redistribution of charge between the surface carbon coating layer and inner Fe/Fe₃C nanoparticles efficiently improving both catalytic activity and stability. Therefore, Fe/Fe₃C-A@CNT shows efficient OER catalytic activity, just needing a low overpotential of 292 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm^-2, and long-lasting stability. More importantly, the unique control strategy for carbon thickness in this work provides more opportunity and perspective to prepare robust metal/carbon-based catalytic materials at the nanoscale.

Surface Hydroxyl Chemistry of Titania- and Alumina-Based Supports: Quantitative Titration and Temperature Dependence of Surface Brønsted Acid-Base Parameters

Surface hydroxyl groups on metal oxides play significant roles in catalyst synthesis and catalytic reactions. Despite the importance of surface hydroxyls in broader material applications, quantitative measurements of surface acid-base properties are not regularly reported. Here, we describe direct methods to quantify fundamental properties of surface hydroxyls on several titania- and alumina-based supports. Comparing commercially available anatase, rutile, P25, and P90 titania, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the total surface hydroxyl density varied by a factor of 2, and each surface hydroxyl is associated with approximately one weakly adsorbed water molecule. Proton-exchange site densities, determined at 25 °C with slurry acid-base titrations, led to several conclusions: (i) the intrinsic acidity/basicity of surface hydroxyls were similar regardless of the titania source; (ii) differences in the surface isoelectric point (IEP) were primarily attributable to differences in the surface concentration of acid and base sites; (iii) rutile has a higher surface concentration of basic hydroxyls, leading to a higher IEP; and (iv) P25 and P90 titania have slightly higher surface concentrationsof acidic hydroxyls relative to anatase or rutile. Temperature effects on surface acid-base properties are rarely reported yet are significant: from 5 to 65 °C, IEP values change by roughly one pH unit. The IEP changes were associated with large changes to the intrinsic acid-base equilibrium constants over this temperature range, rather than changes in the composition or concentration of the surface sites.

Porous Carbon Nanofiber Flexible Membranes via a Bottlebrush Copolymer Template for Enhanced High-Performance Supercapacitors

We report a method to construct ordered hierarchical porous structures in carbon nanofiber membranes using poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polydimethylsiloxane bottlebrush block copolymers (BBCPs) as templates. The BBCPs self-assemble into a spherical morphology driven by small-molecule hydrogen bond donors which act as bridges between carbon precursors and templates to promote uniform dispersion of the templates. We successfully obtained flexible, self-supporting, and porous carbon nanofiber membranes (PCNFs) with high porosity. Then, a supercapacitor electrode was independently prepared using PCNFs as an active substance without infiltrating any conductive agents or binders. The PCNFs exhibit excellent performance with a capacitance of 234.1 F g^-1 at a current density of 1 A g^-1 owing to the abundant hierarchical porous structures and high content of nitrogen and oxygen elements internally. The aqueous symmetric supercapacitor prepared using PCNFs electrodes maintains more than 95% capacitance retention after 55,000 charge-discharge cycles. Furthermore, the capacitance retention reaches up to 67.72% at a current density of 50 A g^-1 (compared to 1 A g^-1), exhibiting excellent cycling stability and rate capability. Based on the excellent electrochemical performance and flexible self-supporting ability of PCNFs, this work is expected to facilitate the development of flexible displays, flexible sensors, wearable devices, and electrocatalysis.

Engineering CoP Alloy Foil to a Well-Designed Integrated Electrode Toward High-Performance Electrochemical Energy Storage

Nanostructured integrated electrodes with binder-free design show great potential to solve the ever-growing problems faced by currently commercial lithium-ion batteries such as insufficient power and energy densities. However, there are still many challenging problems limiting practical application of this emerging technology, in particular complex manufacturing process, high fabrication cost, and low loading mass of active material. Different from existing fabrication strategies, here using a CoP alloy foil as a precursor  a simple neutral salt solution-mediated electrochemical dealloying method to well address the above issues is demonstrated. The resultant freestanding mesoporous np-Co(OH)_x /Co₂ P product possesses not only active compositions of high specific capacity and large electrode packing density (>3.0 g cm^-3 ) to meet practical capacity requirements, high-conductivity and well-developed nanoporous framework to achieve simultaneously fast ion and electron transfer, but also interconnected ligaments and suitable free space to ensure strong structural stability. Its comprehensively excellent electrochemical energy storage (EES) performances in both lithium/sodium-ion batteries and lithium-ion capacitors can further illustrate the effectiveness of the integrated electrode preparation strategy, such as remarkable reversible specific capacities/capacitances, dominated pseudo-capacitive EES mechanism, and ultra-long cycling life. This study provides new insights into preparation and design of high-performance integrated electrodes for practical applications.

Designing strategies and enhancing mechanism for multicomponent high-entropy catalysts

High-entropy materials (HEMs) are new-fashioned functional materials in the field of catalysis owing to their large designing space, tunable electronic structure, interesting "cocktail effect", and entropy stabilization effect. Many effective strategies have been developed to design advanced catalysts for various important reactions. Herein, we firstly review effective strategies developed so far for optimizing HEM-based catalysts and the underlying mechanism revealed by both theoretical simulations and experimental aspects. In light of this overview, we subsequently present some perspectives about the development of HEM-based catalysts and provide some serviceable guidelines and/or inspiration for further studying multicomponent catalysts.

Simultaneous detection of dihydroxybenzene isomers in the environment by a free-standing flexible ZnCo2O4 nanoplate arrays/carbon fiber cloth electrode

The simultaneous determination of dihydroxybenzene isomers is highly valuable for early environmental monitoring, but it is still a challenge. In this work, a free-standing flexible electrode was prepared for the simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC), and resorcinol (RC). The bimetallic zinc/cobalt zeolitic imidazolate frameworks nanoplate arrays (Zn/Co-ZIF NPAs) grown in situ on the carbon fiber cloth (CFC) was fabricated by a facile static synthesis method, and the porous ternary ZnCo₂O₄ NPAs derived from Zn/Co-ZIF NPAs were formed by annealing in air. Due to the fast electron transmission, abundant active sites and excellent electrocatalytic properties with enzyme-like kinetic performance of the ZnCo₂O₄/CFC electrode, the as-proposed sensor showed a wilder linear response (2-500 μM), a lower detection limits (0.03 μM HQ, 0.06 μM CC and 0.15 μM RC) and a higher sensitivity (23.58 μA μM^-1 cm^-2 HQ, 17.72 μA μM^-1 cm^-2 CC, and 15.18 μA μM^-1 cm^-2 RC), respectively. More importantly, the proposed electrochemical sensor exhibited excellent detection performance in complex water samples, providing a strategy for the detection of other toxic substances in the ecological environment.

Filler-Integrated Composite Polymer Electrolyte for Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) utilizing fillers as the promoting component bridge the gap between solid polymer electrolytes and inorganic solid electrolytes. The integration of fillers into the polymer matrices is demonstrated as a prevailing strategy to enhance Li-ion transport and assist in constructing Li⁺ -conducting electrode-electrolyte interface layer, which addresses the two key barriers of solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs): low ionic conductivity of electrolyte and high interfacial impedance. Recent review articles have largely focused on the performance of a broad spectrum of CPEs and the general effects of fillers on SSLBs device. Recognizing this, in this review, after briefly presenting the categories of fillers (traditional and emerged) and the promoted ionic conducting mechanisms in CPEs, the progress in the interfacial structure design principle, with the emphasis on the crucial influence of filler size, concentration, and hybridization strategies on filler-polymer interface that is the most critical to Li-ion transport is assessed. The latest exciting advances on filler-enabled in situ generation of a Li⁺ -conductive layer at the electrode-electrolyte interface to greatly reduce the interfacial impedance are further elaborated. Finally, this review discusses the challenges to be addressed, outlines research directions, and provides a future vision for developing advanced CPEs for high-performing SSLBs.

Material Choice and Structure Design of Flexible Battery Electrode

With the development of flexible electronics, the demand for flexibility is gradually put forward for its energy supply device, i.e., battery, to fit complex curved surfaces with good fatigue resistance and safety. As an important component of flexible batteries, flexible electrodes play a key role in the energy density, power density, and mechanical flexibility of batteries. Their large-scale commercial applications depend on the fulfillment of the commercial requirements and the fabrication methods of electrode materials. In this paper, the deformable electrode materials and structural design for flexible batteries are summarized, with the purpose of flexibility. The advantages and disadvantages of the application of various flexible materials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, MXene, carbon fiber/carbon fiber cloth, and conducting polymers) and flexible structures (buckling structure, helical structure, and kirigami structure) in flexible battery electrodes are discussed. In addition, the application scenarios of flexible batteries and the main challenges and future development of flexible electrode fabrication are also discussed, providing general guidance for the research of high-performance flexible electrodes.

Single "Swiss-roll" microelectrode elucidates the critical role of iron substitution in conversion-type oxides

Advancing the lithium-ion battery technology requires the understanding of electrochemical processes in electrode materials with high resolution, accuracy, and sensitivity. However, most techniques today are limited by their inability to separate the complex signals from slurry-coated composite electrodes. Here, we use a three-dimensional "Swiss-roll" microtubular electrode that is incorporated into a micrometer-sized lithium battery. This on-chip platform combines various in situ characterization techniques and precisely probes the intrinsic electrochemical properties of each active material due to the removal of unnecessary binders and additives. As an example, it helps elucidate the critical role of Fe substitution in a conversion-type NiO electrode by monitoring the evolution of Fe₂O₃ and solid electrolyte interphase layer. The markedly enhanced electrode performances are therefore explained. Our approach exposes a hitherto unexplored route to tracking the phase, morphology, and electrochemical evolution of electrodes in real time, allowing us to reveal information that is not accessible with bulk-level characterization techniques.

A Review on the Application of Cobalt-Based Nanomaterials in Supercapacitors

Among many electrode materials, cobalt-based nanomaterials are widely used in supercapacitors because of their high natural abundance, good electrical conductivity, and high specific capacitance. However, there are still some difficulties to overcome, including poor structural stability and low power density. This paper summarizes the research progress of cobalt-based nanomaterials (cobalt oxide, cobalt hydroxide, cobalt-containing ternary metal oxides, etc.) as electrode materials for supercapacitors in recent years and discusses the preparation methods and properties of the materials. Notably, the focus of this paper is on the strategies to improve the electrochemical properties of these materials. We show that the performance of cobalt-based nanomaterials can be improved by designing their morphologies and, among the many morphologies, the mesoporous structure plays a major role. This is because mesoporous structures can mitigate volume changes and improve the performance of pseudo capacitance. This review is dedicated to the study of several cobalt-based nanomaterials in supercapacitors, and we hope that future scholars will make new breakthroughs in morphology design.

Review on Fluorescent Carbon/Graphene Quantum Dots: Promising Material for Energy Storage and Next-Generation Light-Emitting Diodes

Carbon/graphene quantum dots are 0D fluorescent carbon materials with sizes ranging from 2 nm to around 50 nm, with some attractive properties and diverse applications. Different synthesis routes, bandgap variation, higher stability, low toxicity with tunable emission, and the variation of physical and chemical properties with change in size have drawn immense attention to its potential application in different optoelectronics-based materials, especially advanced light-emitting diodes and energy storage devices. WLEDs are a strong candidate for the future of solid-state lighting due to their higher luminance and luminous efficiency. High-performance batteries play an important part in terms of energy saving and storage. In this review article, the authors provide a comparative analysis of recent and ongoing advances in synthesis (top-down and bottom-up), properties, and wide applications in different kinds of next-generation light-emitting diodes such as WLEDs, and energy storage devices such as batteries (Li-B, Na-B) and supercapacitors. Furthermore, they discuss the potential applications and progress of carbon dots in battery applications such as electrode materials. The authors also summarise the developmental stages and challenges in the existing field, the state-of-the-art of carbon/graphene quantum dots, and the potential and possible solutions for the same.

Precisely Tunable Synthesis of Binder-Free Cobalt Oxide-Based Li-Ion Battery Anode Using Scalable Electrothermal Waves

Binder-free transition metal oxide-based anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), having high capacity and abundance, have received considerable attention. However, their low conductivity and unstable charge-discharge cycles must be addressed, and scalable fabrication routes for binder-free design with optimal phase tuning are necessary. Herein, we report a precisely tunable synthesis of binder-free cobalt oxide-based LIB anodes using scalable electrothermal waves. Needle-like nanoarrays of cobalt hydroxide on nickel foams are prepared as precursors, and Joule-heating-driven electrothermal waves passing through the metal foams cause transition to cobalt oxides with preserved structures and adjustable phase tuning of grains and oxygen vacancies. The rapid heating-cooling environment using electrothermal waves causes extreme input thermal energy over the activation energy of phase transitions and metastable phase trapping. This programmable route completes the selective grain characteristics and vacancy concentrations. The electrothermally tuned binder-free LIB anodes employing the CoO/Co₃O₄@Ni foam-based electrodes exhibit a high-rate capacity (3.7 mAh cm^-2) at 2.4 mA cm^-2 for 70 charge-discharge cycles. Accumulated electrothermal waves from multiple cycles broaden the tunable ranges of the morphological and chemical transitions causing rapid screening of the optimal phases for LIB anodes. This phase-tuning strategy will inspire precise yet efficient synthesis routes for diverse binder-free electrodes and catalysts.

Strong electronic metal-support interaction between Pt and stainless mesh for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction

Strong electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) can tailor the electronic structure of electrocatalysts. Herein, Pt nanoparticles anchored on stainless mesh (SM) via EMSI engineering are reported, exhibiting excellent hydrogen production activity. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the superior performance stems from the strong EMSI between Pt atoms and Fe atoms in SM.

Fabrication and application of Fe2O3-decorated carbon nanotube fibers via instantaneous Joule-heating method

Fe₂O₃-decorated carbon nanotube fibers (Fe₂O₃/CNT fibers) exhibit synergistic properties and can be used in flexible electrochemical devices. One of the greatest challenges is to synthesize homogeneous Fe₂O₃on CNT fibers. In this paper, we have anchored Fe₂O₃nanocrystals compactly and uniformly in CNT fibers via the instantaneous Joule-heating method. By regulating the current intensity, iron catalysts in CNT fibers can be directly converted into Fe₂O₃nanocrystals. This method can also prepare Fe₂O₃particles of different sizes by adjusting the current value. The distinct structure of Fe₂O₃/CNT fibers contributed to their excellent electrochemical performance. Because cobaltocene and nickelocene can also be used as catalysts to prepare CNT fibers, this method is expected to be a universal method for the composite of transition metal oxide and CNT fibers.

Polypyrrole-coated Boron-doped Nickel-Cobalt sulfide on electrospinning carbon nanofibers for high performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Although nickel-cobalt bimetallic sulfides have been widely studied for supercapacitor electrodes, how to obtain high specific capacity and cycle stability is still an important challenge. Here, an efficient chemical redox method is used to adjust the crystal and electronic structure of cobalt-nickel sulfide (NCS) via B doping, combined with electrospinning technology and conductive polymer polypyrrole (PPy) coating to facilitate faraday redox reactions and obtain high energy density electrode materials. The resulting composite with boron-doped nickel-cobalt sulfide on electrospinned carbon nanofibers with polypyrrole-coating (PPy@B-NCS/CNF) has a high specific capacity (751.61C/g at 1 A/g) and good cycle stability (82.49 % retention after 4000 cycles at 5 A/g). With PPy@B-NCS/CNF as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is prepared. It has excellent electrochemical properties with a power density of 65.58 Wh kg^-1 and an energy density of 819.72 W kg^-1. The low-temperature performance test shows high reversibility, which provides the possibility for the development of low-temperature electrolytes. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) explains that B-doped NCS has better electrochemical properties from the energy band and state density.
