Bioinspired Stimuli-Responsive Color-Changing Systems

Programmable multimode optical encryption of advanced printable security inks by integrating structural color with Down/Up- conversion photoluminescence

Optical information encryption with high encoding capacities can significantly boost the security level of anti-counterfeiting in the scenario of guaranteeing the authenticity of a wide scope of common and luxury goods. In this work, a novel counterfeiting material with high-degree complexity is fabricated by microencapsulating cholesteric liquid crystals and triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion fluorophores to integrate structural coloration with fluorescence and upconversion photoluminescence. Moreover, the multimode security ink presents tailorable optical behaviors and programmable abilities on flexible substrates by various printing techniques, which offers distinct information encryption under different optical modes. The advanced strategy provides a practical versatile platform for high-secure-level multimode optical inks with largely enhanced encoding capacities, programmability, printability, and cost-effectiveness, which manifests enormous potentials for information encryption and anti-counterfeiting technology.

Recent advances in photonic crystal-based chemical sensors

The increasing attention towards environmental quality, food safety, public security and medical diagnosis demands high requirements and standards for chemical sensors with merits of rapid response, high precision, long-term stability and reusability. In this case, a prominent innovation in sensory materials holds potential to realize new generations of chemical sensor technologies. Specifically, photonic crystals (PCs) as structured dielectric materials with spatially periodic ordered arrangements offer unique advantages in improving the sensing performance of chemical sensors. Consequently, the promising properties of PCs promote research on their implementation as an integral part of chemical sensors. This review highlights the integration of PCs into chemical sensors including a range of building blocks for the construction of PCs with versatile opal or opal inverse structural architectures and a delicate choice of surface functionality with associated sensing interfaces for target recognition and signal transduction. Subsequently, based on their synthesis and functionality, we focus on introducing the sensing principles of recent advances in PC-based chemical sensors, such as reflection spectra-based sensing, visual colorimetric sensing, fluorescence sensing, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensing and other integrated sensing. Finally, the future prospects and challenges are discussed for the further improvement of PC-based chemical sensors.

Multiple Stimuli-Responsive Color-Changing Polymer Materials for Reversible Writing and Anti-Counterfeiting

Polymer materials with multiple stimuli-responsive properties have demonstrated many potential and practical applications. By covalently introducing spiropyran (SP1) and spirothiopyran (STP) into the polyurethane backbone, photochromic, mechanochromic, and thermally discolored polymer materials have been prepared. In this work, we report for the first time that white light (violet, blue, and green light) above a certain intensity can activate STP to green color. Based on the above discovery, the polyurethane with SP1 and STP can exhibit reversible three-color changes (brown, green, and purple) in response to four stimuli: ultraviolet irradiation, white light irradiation, mechanical stress, and heat. The color-changing polymer materials have high color contrast and excellent reversibility, and can be used for reversible writing, anticounterfeiting and information encryption, etc.

Selective Segregation of Thermo-Responsive Microgels via Microfluidic Technology

Separation of equally sized particles distinguished solely by material properties remains still a very challenging task. Here a simple separation of differently charged, thermo-responsive polymeric particles (for example microgels) but equal in size, via the combination of pressure-driven microfluidic flow and precise temperature control is proposed. The separation principle relies on forcing thermo-responsive microgels to undergo the volume phase transition during heating and therefore changing its size and correspondingly the change in drift along a pressure driven shear flow. Different thermo-responsive particle types such as different grades of ionizable groups inside the polymer matrix have different temperature regions of volume phase transition temperature (VPTT). This enables selective control of collapsed versus swollen microgels, and accordingly, this physical principle provides a simple method for fractioning a binary mixture with at least one thermo-responsive particle, which is achieved by elution times in the sense of particle chromatography. The concepts are visualized in experimental studies, with an intend to improve the purification strategy of the broad distribution of charged microgels into fractioning to more narrow distribution microgels distinguished solely by slight differences in net charge.

pH-Responsive, Wide Color Gamut Dynamic Color Display Enabled by PDMAEMA Brush-Based Fabry-Perot Resonant Cavity

Dynamic color-changing materials have attracted broad interest due to their widespread applications in visual sensing, dynamic color display, anticounterfeiting, and image encryption/decryption. In this work, we demonstrate a novel pH-responsive dynamic color-changing material based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity with a pH-responsive poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brush layer as the responsive insulating layer. The pH-responsive PDMAEMA brush undergoes protonation at a low pH value (pH < 6), which induces different swelling degrees in response to pH and thus refractive index and thickness change of the insulator layer of the MIM FP cavity. This leads to significant optical property changes in transmission and a distinguishable color change spanning the whole visible region by adjusting the pH value of the external environment. Due to the reversible conformational change of the PDMAEMA and the formation of covalent bonds between the PDMAEMA molecular chain and the Ag substrate, the MIM FP cavity exhibits stable performance and good reproducibility. This pH-responsive MIM FP cavity establishes a new way to modulate transmission color in the full visible region and exhibits a broad prospect of applications in dynamic color display, real-time environment monitoring, and information encryption and decryption.

Dual-Mode Multicolor Display Based on Structural and Fluorescent Color CdS Photonic Crystal Hydrogel

In this study, we prepared a multicolor structural-fluorescent CdS-PEGDA photonic crystal hydrogel (SFC-CPH) with a dual display mode, which has two different optical states: structural color mode and fluorescent color mode. SFC-CPH displays structural color mode under visible light and fluorescent color mode under ultraviolet light. Initially, monodisperse CdS colloidal particles were synthesized via a hydrothermal method, leading to the self-assembly of a photonic crystal template. The high refractive index of CdS contributes to the photonic crystals' low-angle dependence and vivid structural colors. Then, a variety of fluorescent molecules were doped into poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel and combined with photonic crystals with distinct structural colors to prepare three distinct colors of SFC-CPH. We also investigated the optical characteristics and surface properties of these photonic crystal hydrogels. Based on these dual-mode display characteristics, we designed several dual-mode display patterns and a method for information encoding. The unique property of this photonic crystal hydrogel material suggests its substantial potential for applications in information storage, security, and encoding, offering innovative avenues in the realm of information display.

Photochromic luminescence of organic crystals arising from subtle molecular rearrangement

Photoluminescence (PL) colour-changing materials in response to photostimulus play an increasingly significant role in intelligent applications for their programmability. Nevertheless, current research mainly focuses on photochemical processes, with less attention to PL transformation through uniform aggregation mode adjustment. Here we show photochromic luminescence in organic crystals (e.g. dimethyl terephthalate) with PL varying from dark blue to purple, then to bright orange-red, and finally to red. This change is attributed to the emergence of clusters with red emission, which is barely achieved in single-benzene-based structures, thanks to the subtle molecular rearrangements prompted by light. Crucial to this process are the through-space electron interactions among molecules and moderate short contacts between ester groups. The irradiated crystals exhibit reversible PL transformation upon sufficient relaxation, showing promising applications in information storage and smart optoelectronic devices. This research contributes to the development of smart photochromic luminescent materials with significant PL colour transformations through molecular rearrangement.

Cephalopod-Inspired Chemical-Gated Hydrogel Actuation Systems for Information 3D-Encoding Display

Cephalopods evolve the acetylcholine-gated actuation control function of their skin muscles, which enables their dynamic/static multimode display capacities for achieving perfectly spatial control over the colors/patterns on every inch of skin. Reproduction of artificial analogs that exhibit similar multimodal display is essential to reach advanced information three-dimensional (3D) encoding with higher security than the classic 2D-encoding strategy, but remains underdeveloped. The core difficulty is how to replicate such chemical-gated actuation control function into artificial soft actuating systems. Herein, this work proposes to develop azobenzene-functionalized poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) hydrogel systems, whose upper critical solution temperature (UCST) type actuation responsiveness can be intelligently programmed or even gated by the addition of hydrophilic α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) molecules for reversible association with pendant azobenzene moieties via supramolecular host-guest interactions. By employing such α-CD-gated hydrogel actuator as an analogue of cephalopods' skin muscle, biomimetic mechanically modulated multicolor fluorescent display systems are designed, which demonstrate a conceptually new α-CD-gated "thermal stimulation-hydrogel actuation-fluorescence output" display mechanism. Consequently, high-security 3D-encoding information carriers with an unprecedented combination of single-input multiple-output, dynamic/static dual-mode and spatially controlled display capacities are achieved. This bioinspired strategy brings functional-integrated features for artificial display systems and opens previously unidentified avenues for information security.

Research Progress of Bioinspired Structural Color in Camouflage

Bioinspired structural color represents a burgeoning field that draws upon principles, strategies, and concepts derived from biological systems to inspire the design of novel technologies or products featuring reversible color changing mechanisms, with significant potential applications for camouflage, sensors, anticounterfeiting, etc. This mini-review focuses specifically on the research progress of bioinspired structural color in the realm of camouflage. Firstly, it discusses fundamental mechanisms of coloration in biological systems, encompassing pigmentation, structural coloration, fluorescence, and bioluminescence. Subsequently, it delineates three modulation strategies-namely, photonic crystals, film interference, and plasmonic modulation-that contribute to the development of bioinspired structural color materials or devices. Moreover, the review critically assesses the integration of bioinspired structural color materials with environmental contexts, with a particular emphasis on their application in camouflage. Finally, the paper outlines persisting challenges and suggests future development trends in the camouflage field via bioinspired structural color.

The actin cytoskeleton plays multiple roles in structural colour formation in butterfly wing scales

Vivid structural colours in butterflies are caused by photonic nanostructures scattering light. Structural colours evolved for numerous biological signalling functions and have important technological applications. Optically, such structures are well understood, however insight into their development in vivo remains scarce. We show that actin is intimately involved in structural colour formation in butterfly wing scales. Using comparisons between iridescent (structurally coloured) and non-iridescent scales in adult and developing H. sara, we show that iridescent scales have more densely packed actin bundles leading to an increased density of reflective ridges. Super-resolution microscopy across three distantly related butterfly species reveals that actin is repeatedly re-arranged during scale development and crucially when the optical nanostructures are forming. Furthermore, actin perturbation experiments at these later developmental stages resulted in near total loss of structural colour in H. sara. Overall, this shows that actin plays a vital and direct templating role during structural colour formation in butterfly scales, providing ridge patterning mechanisms that are likely universal across lepidoptera.

Stimuli-Responsive Polymers for Engineered Emulsions

Emulsions are complex. Dispersing two immiscible phases, thus expanding an interface, requires effort to achieve and the resultant dispersion is thermodynamically unstable, driving the system toward coalescence. Furthermore, physical instabilities, including creaming, arise due to presence of dispersed droplets of different densities to a continuous phase. Emulsions allow the formulation of oils, can act as vehicles to solubilize both hydrophilic and lipophilic molecules, and can be tailored to desirable rheological profiles, including "gel-like" behavior and shear thinning. The usefulness of emulsions can be further expanded by imparting stimuli-responsive or "smart" behaviors by inclusion of a stimuli-responsive emulsifier, polymer or surfactant. This enables manipulation like gelation, breaking, or aggregation, by external triggers such as pH, temperature, or salt concentration changes. This platform generates functional materials for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, oil recovery, and colloid engineering, combining both smart behaviors and intrinsic benefit of emulsions. However, with increased functionality comes greater complexity. This review focuses on the use of stimuli-responsive polymers for the generation of smart emulsions, motivated by the great adaptability of polymers for this application and their efficacy as steric stabilizers. Stimuli-responsive emulsions are described according to the trigger used to provide the reader with an overview of progress in this field.

Self-Assembled Ring-Based Complex Colloidal Particles by Lock-And-Key Interaction and Their Self-Assembly into Unusual Colloidal Crystals

Creating hierarchical crystalline materials using simple colloids or nanoparticles is very challenging, as it is usually impossible to achieve hierarchical structures without nonhierarchical colloidal interactions. Here, we present a hierarchical self-assembly (SA) route that employs colloidal rings and anisotropic colloidal particles to form complex colloids and uses them as building blocks to form unusual colloidal columnar liquid crystals or crystals. This route is realized by designing hierarchical SA driving forces that is controlled by the colloidal shape and shape-dependent depletion attraction. Depletion-induced lock-and-key interaction is the first driving force, which ensures a high efficiency (>90%) to load colloidal particles of other shapes such as spheres, spherocylinders, and oblate ellipsoids into rings, providing high-quality building blocks. Their SA into ordered superstructures has to require a second driving force such as higher volume fraction and/or stronger depletion attraction. As a result, unusual hierarchical colloidal (liquid) crystals, which have previously been difficult to fabricate by simple binary assembly, can be achieved. This work presents a significant advancement in the field of hierarchical SA, demonstrating a promising strategy for constructing many unprecedented crystalline materials by the SA route.

Eye-Readable and Wearable Colorimetric Sensor Arrays for In Situ Monitoring of Volatile Organic Compounds

Wearable sensors utilize changes in color as a response to physiological stimuli, making them easily recognizable by the naked eye. These colorimetric wearable sensors offer benefits such as easy readability, rapid responsiveness, cost-effectiveness, and straightforward manufacturing techniques. However, their applications in detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in situ have been limited due to the low concentration of complex VOCs and complicated external interferences. Aiming to address these challenges, we introduced readable and wearable colorimetric sensing arrays with a microchannel structure and highly gas-sensitive materials for in situ detection of complex VOCs. The highly gas-sensitive materials were designed by loading gas-sensitive dyes into the porous metal-organic frameworks and further depositing the composites on the electrospun nanofiber membrane. The colorimetric sensor arrays were fabricated using various gas-sensitive composites, including eight dye/MOF composites that respond to various VOCs and two Pd2+/dye/MOF composites that respond to ethylene. This enables the specific recognition of multiple characteristic VOCs. A microfluidic channel made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was integrated with different colorimetric elements to create a wearable sensor array. It was attached to the surface of fruits to collect and monitor VOCs using the DenseNet classification method. As a proof of concept, we demonstrated the feasibility of the wearable sensing system in monitoring the ripening process of fruits by continuously measuring the VOC emissions from the skin of the fruit.

Flexible Organic Chiral Crystals with Thermal and Excitation Modulation of the Emission for Information Transmission, Writing, and Storage

Organic single crystals quickly emerge as dense yet light and nearly defect-free media for emissive elements. Integration of functionalities and control over the emissive properties is currently being explored for a wide range of these materials to benchmark their performance against organic emissive materials diluted in powders or films. Here, we report mechanically flexible emissive chiral organic crystals capable of an unprecedented combination of fast, reversible, and low-fatigue responses. UV-excited single crystals of both enantiomers of the material, 4-chloro-2-(((1-phenylidene)imino)methyl)phenol, exhibit a drastic yet reversible change in the emission color from green to orange-yellow within a second and can be cycled at least 2000 times. The photoresponse was found to depend strongly on the excitation intensity and temperature. Combining chirality, mechanical compliance, rapid emission switching, multiple responses, and writability by UV light, this material provides a unique and versatile platform for developing organic crystal-based materials for on-demand signal transfer, information storage, and cryptography.

Colloidal Photonic Composites with a Long-Range Order by Hot-Pressing Polymer Brush-Grafted Silica Colloids

Colloidal photonic composites (CPCs) are unique optical materials that combine flexible and responsive polymers with colloidal photonic crystals, and they have promising applications in colorful displays, optical anticounterfeiting, and visual sensors. However, conventional self-assembly strategies for constructing CPCs via solvent evaporation have faced limitations due to the meticulous regulation required during the evaporation process and typically long preparation durations. Here, we present an external force method to achieve a long-range ordered arrangement in CPCs by hot-pressing poly(2-[[(butylamino)carbonyl]oxy]ethyl acrylate (PBCOE)) brush-grafted silica colloidal particles (SiO2-g-PBCOE). We show that the hot-pressing conditions (i.e., temperature and pressure) and the silica volume fraction (φsilica) of the SiO2-g-PBCOE colloidal particles play crucial roles in determining their ordering and optical properties. By optimization of the hot-pressing temperature up to 100 °C and pressure of 5 MPa, a long-range ordered arrangement of SiO2-g-PBCOE colloidal particles with a φsilica of 20.3% can be achieved. For the effect of structural features, our findings reveal that SiO2-g-PBCOE colloidal particles featuring a higher φsilica are more prone to obtain a long-range ordered arrangement compared to a lower φsilica under hot-pressing conditions at relatively low temperature and pressure (50 °C and 5 MPa), which is mainly attributed to the chain entanglement and hydrogen bonding interactions induced by grafted longer polymer brushes, leading to additional energy inputs and weakening the ordering. Significantly, the critical φsilica (φc) of SiO2-g-PBCOE colloidal particles is discerned, strongly influencing the optical properties of the hot-pressed films. Specifically, a hot-pressed SiO2-g-PBCOE film with a critical φsilica of 29.3% displays enhanced optical properties characterized by intensified reflection peaks, narrowed full width at half-maximum (FWHM), and brilliant structural colors. Notably, in this work, we reveal the mechanism of hot-pressing-driven core-shell colloidal particle ordering and the key factors affecting the ordering of colloidal particles, i.e., chain entanglement and hydrogen-bonding interactions, which play a crucial role in obtaining CPCs with controllable structures. Moreover, angle-dependent structural color is observed in the hot-pressed SiO2-g-PBCOE film with a φsilica content of 29.3% due to the unique attributes of the highly ordered arrangement, while the films exhibit mechanochromic properties due to chain entanglement and hydrogen bonding interactions. This work provides valuable insights into the rapid construction of highly ordered CPCs and establishes a solid foundation for external force-assisted ordering of colloidal particles.

Poly(4-vinylpyridine) and Poly(methacrylic acid) Particle Architectures for pH-Responsive and Mechanochromic Opal Films

While stimuli-responsive structural colors are commonly found in nature, mimicking these in artificial materials is challenging. Dynamically switchable and tunable coloration, however, is in high demand in widespread fields of applications, including advanced display and monitoring technologies, smart sensing, and anticounterfeiting. This work reports a scalable protocol for the synthesis of tailor-made core-shell particles and subsequent processing to opal films with iridescent, pH-responsive, and mechanochromic structural color. Novel monodisperse core-shell architectures based on hard polystyrene core particles are synthesized via stepwise emulsion polymerization in a starved-feed mode. The incorporation of 4-vinylpyridine and methacrylic acid as functional comonomers in the soft particle shell facilitates pH-responsive swelling and deswelling. Mechanically stable and well-ordered colloidal crystal films are obtained by the self-assembly of the particles during processing with the powerful melt-shear organization technique. Thereby obtained opal films show Bragg-scattering at the colloidal crystalline structure and exhibit brilliant green-turquoise to blue-violet reflection colors, dependent on the angle of view and illumination. Upon changes in the pH value or mechanical deformation, the reflected wavelength shifts by more than 100 nm, leading to intriguing changes in the visible structural color. Excellent reversibility is achieved by the subsequent application of a convenient UV cross-linking strategy, corroborating the high application potential of these advanced functional materials.

Smart colloidal photonic crystal sensors

Smart colloidal photonic crystals (PCs) with stimuli-responsive periodic micro/nano-structures, photonic bandgaps, and structural colors have shown unique advantages (high sensitivity, visual readout, wireless characteristics, etc.) in sensing by outputting diverse structural colors and reflection signals. In this review, smart PC sensors are summarized according to their fabrications, structures, sensing mechanisms, and applications. The fabrications of colloidal PCs are mainly by self-assembling the well-defined nanoparticles into the periodical structure (supersaturation-, polymerization-, evaporation-, shear-, interaction-, and field-induced self-assembly process). Their structures can be divided into two groups: closely packed and non-closely packed nano-structures. The sensing mechanisms can be explained by Bragg's law, including the change in the effective refractive index, lattice constant, and the order degree. The sensing applications are detailly introduced according to the analytes of the target, including solvents, vapors, humidity, mechanical force, temperature, electrical field, magnetic field, pH, ions/molecules, and so on. Finally, the corresponding challenges and the future potential prospects of artificial smart colloidal PCs in the sensing field are discussed.

Mechanochromic and ionic conductive cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers for biomechanical monitoring and human-machine interaction

Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) that combine rubbery elasticity with structural colour from self-assembled helical nanostructures are of paramount importance for diverse applications such as biomimetic skins, adaptive optics and soft robotics. Despite great advances, it is challenging to integrate electrical sensing and colour-changing characteristics in a single CLCE system. Here, we report the design and synthesis of an ionic conductive cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (iCLCE) through in situ Michael addition and free-radical photopolymerization of CLCE precursors on silane-functionalized polymer ionic liquid networks, in which robust covalent chemical bonding was formed at the interface. Thanks to superior mechanochromism and ionic conductivity, the resulting iCLCEs exhibit dynamic colour-changing and electrical sensing functions in a wide range upon mechanical stretching, and can be used for biomechanical monitoring during joint bending. Importantly, a capacitive elastomeric sensor can be constructed through facilely stacking iCLCEs, where the optical and electrical dual-signal reporting performance allows intuitive visual localization of pressure intensity and distribution. Moreover, proof-of-concept application of the iCLCEs has been demonstrated with human-interactive systems. The research disclosed herein can provide new insights into the development of bioinspired somatosensory materials for emerging applications in diverse fields such as human-machine interaction, prostheses and intelligent robots.

Octopus-inspired deception and signaling systems from an exceptionally-stable acene variant

Multifunctional platforms that can dynamically modulate their color and appearance have attracted attention for applications as varied as displays, signaling, camouflage, anti-counterfeiting, sensing, biomedical imaging, energy conservation, and robotics. Within this context, the development of camouflage systems with tunable spectroscopic and fluorescent properties that span the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectral regions has remained exceedingly challenging because of frequently competing materials and device design requirements. Herein, we draw inspiration from the unique blue rings of the Hapalochlaena lunulata octopus for the development of deception and signaling systems that resolve these critical challenges. As the active material, our actuator-type systems incorporate a readily-prepared and easily-processable nonacene-like molecule with an ambient-atmosphere stability that exceeds the state-of-the-art for comparable acenes by orders of magnitude. Devices from this active material feature a powerful and unique combination of advantages, including straightforward benchtop fabrication, competitive baseline performance metrics, robustness during cycling with the capacity for autonomous self-repair, and multiple dynamic multispectral operating modes. When considered together, the described exciting discoveries point to new scientific and technological opportunities in the areas of functional organic materials, reconfigurable soft actuators, and adaptive photonic systems.

Reconfigurable Photonic Crystal Reversibly Exhibiting Single and Double Structural Colors

Unlike absorption-based colors of dyes and pigments, reflection-based colors of photonic crystals, so called "structural colors", are responsive to external stimuli, but can remain unfaded for over ten million years, and therefore regarded as a next-generation coloring mechanism. However, it is a challenge to rationally design the spectra of structural colors, where one structure gives only one reflection peak defined by Bragg's law, unlike those of absorption-based colors. Here, we report a reconfigurable photonic crystal that exhibits single-peak and double-peak structural colors. This photonic crystal is composed of a colloidal nanosheet in water, which spontaneously adopts a layered structure with single periodicity (407 nm). After a temperature-gradient treatment, the photonic crystal segregates into two regions with shrunken (385 nm) and expanded (448 nm) periodicities, and thus exhibits double reflection peaks that are blue- and red-shifted from the original one, respectively. Notably, the transition between the single-peak and double-peak states is reversible.

Multicomponent structural color membrane based on soft lithography array for high-sensitive Raman detection

Inspired by ordered photonic crystals and structural color materials in nature, we successfully prepared hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) photonic films with ordered surface arrays by double-imprint soft lithography. Then we introduced another important material of the cellulose family, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), which has liquid crystal nature and birefringent properties of the particles, into the system to realize the single-point shrinkage of the film array and the control of structural color. Through multi-component doping and concentration control, we further optimized the multi-scale structure of the materials, and obtained HPC/CNCs composite photonic films with excellent properties in color, stability and flexibility, whose elastic modulus and tensile properties are significantly higher than those of single-component. Further loading of SiO2@PDA enhances the color saturation and realizes the in-situ reduction of metal ions on the film surface. This plasma film can track a variety of substances with high sensitivity and long-term stability, showing potential application prospects in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which provides a potential possibility for chiral structures to be used in the field of biosensor detection and circularly polarized luminescence.

Optically Transparent and Color-Stable Elastomer with Structural Coloration under Elongation

Optically transparent and colored elastomers with high toughness are expected to play an important role in the construction of advanced medical materials, wearable displays, and soft robots. In this study, we found that composite elastomers consisting of amorphous SiO2 particles homogeneously dispersed in high concentrations within a biocompatible acrylic polymer network exhibit optical transparency and bright structural colors. In the composite elastomers, the system in which the SiO2 particles form a colloidal amorphous array hardly changes its structural color hue despite deformation due to elongation. Furthermore, the composite elastomer of the SiO2 particles with the acrylic polymer network also results in high mechanical toughness. In summary, we have shown that the elastomer that exhibits fade-resistant structural coloration formed from safe materials can combine stable coloration and mechanical strength independent of their shape. This is expected to have new potential in future technologies to support our daily life.

Multicolor Conjugated Polymer Thin Films with Tunable Responsivity to Oxidative and Reductive Environments

Dynamic colors that respond to environmental changes are of great interest for diverse areas of science and technology ranging from chemical and biological sensors to smart information display. Here, we demonstrate a multitude of responsive colors from a conjugated polymer film arising from a thin-film interference. This mechanism provides an excellent control over the thin-film color by varying the film thickness, type of substrate, and degree of polaron population and is generally applicable to various conjugated polymers for further color variation. Furthermore, multiple sets of responsive colors are achieved from a single polymer layer by patterning the underlying substrate to spatially modify the interference conditions. Using this system, we demonstrate the reversible color changes induced by an oxidative or reductive environment with color responsivity controllable with the nature of the polaron state.

Boosting Ion Conductivities: Light-Modulated Azobenzene-Based Ionic Liquids in Vertical Nanochannels

Exploring stimuli-responsive ion-conductive materials is a challenging task, but it has gained increasing attention because of their enormous potential applications in actuators, sensors, and smart electronics. Here, we demonstrate a distinctive photoresponsive ion-conductive device that utilizes azobenzene-based ionic liquids ([AzoCnMIM][Br], where n = 2, 6, and 10), confined in nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates for photoisomerization. The structure of [AzoCnMIM][Br] comprises photoresponsive and hydrophobic azobenzene moieties, hydrophilic imidazolium cations, and negatively charged bromide ions. Therefore, [AzoCnMIM][Br] can form micelles and exhibit photoresponsive ion conductivities. The nanochannels of AAO templates exhibit a confinement effect on the formation of azobenzene-based ionic liquid micelles due to the pore size, thereby preventing the formation of larger micelles that could lead to a decrease in conductivity. Consequently, the ion conductivities of the azobenzene-based ionic liquids are higher in the nanochannels of the AAO templates. The effects of the length of carbon chains on the azobezene-based ionic liquids and the pore size of the AAO templates have also been investigated. Additionally, through irradiation with UV/vis light, [AzoCnMIM][Br] can undergo reversible isomerization, thereby reversibly changing the sizes of the micelles and subsequently altering the ion conductivities.

Sequential-Stimuli Induced Stepwise-Response of Pyridylpyrenes

Stimuli-responsive materials, especially multi-stimuli-responsive materials, can sense external stimuli such as light, heat, and force, have shown great potential in drug delivery, data storage, encryption, energy-harvesting, and artificial intelligence. Conventional multi-stimuli-responsive materials are sensitive to each independent stimulus, causing losses in the diversity and accuracy of the identification for practical application. Herein, a unique phenomenon of sequential-stimuli induced stepwise-response generated from elaborately designed single-component organic materials is reported, which shows large bathochromic shifts up to 5800 cm-1 under sequential stimuli of force and light. In contrast to multi-stimuli-responsive materials, the response of these materials strictly relies on the sequence of stimuli, allowing logicality, rigidity, and accuracy to be integrated into one single-component material. The molecular keypad lock is built based on these materials, pointing promising to a future for this logical response in significant practical applications. This breakthrough gives a new drive to classical stimuli-responsiveness and provides a fundamental design strategy for new generations of high-performance stimuli-responsive materials.

Squid leucophore-inspired engineering of optically dynamic human cells

Cephalopods (e.g., squids, octopuses, and cuttlefishes) possess remarkable dynamic camouflage abilities and therefore have emerged as powerful sources of inspiration for the engineering of dynamic optical technologies. Within this context, we have focused on the development of engineered living systems that can emulate the tunable optical characteristics of some squid skin cells. Herein, we expand our ability to controllably incorporate reflectin-based structures within mammalian cells via genetic engineering methods, and demonstrate that such structures can facilitate holotomographic and standard microscopy imaging of the cells. Moreover, we show that the reflectin-based structures within our cells can be reconfigured with a straightforward chemical stimulus, and we quantify the stimulus-induced changes observed for the structures at the single cell level. The reported findings may enable a better understanding of the color- and appearance-changing capabilities of some cephalopod skin cells and could afford opportunities for reflectins as molecular probes in the fields of cell biology and biomedical optics.

Ionic Microgel Colloidal Crystals: Responsive Chromism in Dual Physical and Chemical Colors for High-End Information Security and Encryption

Chromic materials play a decisive and escalating role in information security. However, it is challenging to develop chromic materials for encryption technologies that can hardly be imitated. Inspired by versatile metachrosis in nature, a series of coumarin-based 7-(6-bromohexyloxy)-coumarin microgel colloidal crystals (BrHC MGCC) with multiresponsive chromism are able to be assembled by ionic microgels in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution followed by two cycles of freezing-thawing. The ionic microgels can be finely tailored by in situ quaternization with tunable size under varied temperatures and hydration energies of counterions as well as quenched luminescence under UV irradiation, which endows BrHC MGCC with intriguing chromism in the dual-channel coloration of physical structural color and chemical fluorescent color. Three types of BrHC MGCC exhibit various change ranges in structural coloration and similar quenching in fluorescence emission, which can be utilized for the development of the static-dynamic combined anticounterfeiting system with dual coloration. The information conveyed by the BrHC MGCC array presents dynamic variation versus temperature, while the static information can be only integrally read in both sunlight and a 365 nm UV lamp. The fabrication of a microgel colloidal crystal with dual coloration opens a facile and ecofriendly window for multilevel information security, camouflage, and a cumbersome authentication process.

Engineered biomimetic micro/nano-materials for tissue regeneration

The incidence of tissue and organ damage caused by various diseases is increasing worldwide. Tissue engineering is a promising strategy of tackling this problem because of its potential to regenerate or replace damaged tissues and organs. The biochemical and biophysical cues of biomaterials can stimulate and induce biological activities such as cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation, and ultimately achieve tissue repair and regeneration. Micro/nano materials are a special type of biomaterial that can mimic the microstructure of tissues on a microscopic scale due to its precise construction, further providing scaffolds with specific three-dimensional structures to guide the activities of cells. The study and application of biomimetic micro/nano-materials have greatly promoted the development of tissue engineering. This review aims to provide an overview of the different types of micro/nanomaterials, their preparation methods and their application in tissue regeneration.

Self-regulating bioinspired supramolecular photonic hydrogels based on chemical reaction networks for monitoring activities of enzymes and biofuels

Inspired by the way many living organisms utilize chemical/biological reactions to regulate their skin and respond to stimuli in the external environment, we have developed a self-regulating hydrogel design by incorporating chemical reaction networks (CRNs) into biomimetic photonic crystal hydrogels. In this hydrogel system, we used host-guest supramolecular non-covalent bonds between beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and ferrocene (Fc) as partial crosslinkers and designed a CRN involving enzyme-fuel couples of horseradish peroxidase (HRP)/H₂O₂ and glucose oxidase (GOD)/d-glucose, by which the responsive hydrogel was transformed into a glucose-driven self-regulating hydrogel. Due to the biomimetic structural color in the hydrogel, the progress of the chemical reaction was accompanied by a change in the color of the hydrogel. Based on this principle, the designed supramolecular photonic hydrogel (SPH) can not only achieve naked-eye detection of H₂O₂ and glucose concentrations with the assistance of a smartphone but also monitor the reactions of HRP and GOD enzymes and determine their activity parameters. The sensitivity and stability of the sensor have been proven. In addition, due to the reversibility of the chemical reaction network, the sensor can be reused, thus having the potential to serve as a low-cost point-of-care sensor. The SPH was ultimately used to detect glucose in human plasma and H₂O₂ in liver tumor tissue. The results are comparable with commercial assay kits. By redesigning the chemical reaction network in the hydrogel, it is expected to be used for detecting other enzymes or fuels.

Reconfigurable mechano-responsive soft film for adaptive visible and infrared dual-band camouflage

Learning from nature in terms of the camouflage used by species has enabled the continuous development of camouflage technologies for the visible to mid-infrared bands to prevent objects from being detected by sophisticated multispectral detectors, thereby avoiding potential threats. However, achieving visible and infrared dual-band camouflage without destructive interference while also realizing rapidly responsive adaptivity to the varying background remains challenging for high-demand camouflage systems. Here, we report a reconfigurable mechano-responsive soft film for dual-band camouflage. Its modulation ranges for visible transmittance and longwave infrared emittance can be up to 66.3% and 21%, respectively. Rigorous optical simulations are performed to elucidate the modulation mechanism of dual-band camouflage and identify the optimal wrinkles required to achieve the goal. The broadband modulation capability (figure of merit) of the camouflage film can be as high as 2.91. Other advantages, such as simple fabrication and a fast response, make this film a potential candidate for dual-band camouflage that can adapt to diverse environments.

Multi-Stimuli Dually-Responsive Intelligent Woven Structures with Local Programmability for Biomimetic Applications

This work focuses on multi-stimuli-responsive materials with distinctive abilities, that is, color-changing and shape-memory. Using metallic composite yarns and polymeric/thermochromic microcapsule composite fibers, processed via a melt-spinning technique, an electrothermally multi-responsive fabric is woven. The resulting smart-fabric transfers from a predefined structure to an original shape while changing color upon heating or applying an electric field, making it appealing for advanced applications. The shape-memory and color-changing features of the fabric can be controlled by rationally controlling the micro-scale design of the individual fibers in the structure. Thus, the fibers' microstructural features are optimized to achieve excellent color-changing behavior along with shape fixity and recovery ratios of 99.95% and 79.2%, respectively. More importantly, the fabric's dual-response by electric field can be achieved by a low voltage of 5 V, which is smaller than the previously reported values. Above and beyond, the fabric is able to be meticulously activated by selectively applying a controlled voltage to any part of the fabric. The precise local responsiveness can be bestowed upon the fabric by readily controlling its macro-scale design. A biomimetic dragonfly with the shape-memory and color-changing dual-response ability is successfully fabricated, broadening the design and fabrication horizon of groundbreaking smart materials with multiple functions.

Pixelating Responsive Structural Color via a Bioinspired Morphable Concavity Array (MoCA) Composed of 2D Photonic Crystal Elastomer Actuators

Stimuli-responsive structural coloration allows the color change of soft substrates in response to environmental stimuli such as heat, humidity, and solvents. Such color-changing systems enable smart soft devices, such as the camouflageable skin of soft robots or chromatic sensors in wearable devices. However, individually and independently programmable stimuli-responsive color pixels remain significant challenges among the existing color-changing soft materials and devices, which are crucial for dynamic display. Inspired by the dual-color concavities on butterfly wings, a morphable concavity array to pixelate the structural color of two-dimensional photonic crystal elastomer and achieve individually and independently addressable stimuli-responsive color pixels is designed. The morphable concavity can convert its surface between concave and flat upon changes in the solvent and temperature, accompanied by angle-dependent color-shifting. Through multichannel microfluidics, the color of each concavity can be controllably switched. Based on the system, the dynamic display by forming reversibly editable letters and patterns for anti-counterfeiting and encryption are demonstrated. It is believed that the strategy of pixelating optical properties through locally altering surface topography can inspire the design of new transformable optical devices, such as artificial compound eyes or crystalline lenses for biomimetic and robotic applications.

Hydrogels with electrically conductive nanomaterials for biomedical applications

Hydrogels, soft 3D materials of cross-linked hydrophilic polymer chains with a high water content, have found numerous applications in biomedicine because of their similarity to native tissue, biocompatibility and tuneable properties. In general, hydrogels are poor conductors of electric current, due to the insulating nature of commonly-used hydrophilic polymer chains. A number of biomedical applications require or benefit from an increased electrical conductivity. These include hydrogels used as scaffolds for tissue engineering of electroactive cells, as strain-sensitive sensors and as platforms for controlled drug delivery. The incorporation of conductive nanomaterials in hydrogels results in nanocomposite materials which combine electrical conductivity with the soft nature, flexibility and high water content of hydrogels. Here, we review the state of the art of such materials, describing the theories of current conduction in nanocomposite hydrogels, outlining their limitations and highlighting methods for improving their electrical conductivity.

Nanostructure-free crescent-shaped microparticles as full-color reflective pigments

Structural colors provide a promising visualization with high color saturation, iridescent characteristics, and fade resistance. However, pragmatic uses are frequently impeded by complex manufacturing processes for sophisticated nanostructures. Here, we report a facile emulsion-templating strategy to produce crescent-shaped microparticles as structural color pigments. The micro-crescents exhibit brilliant colors under directional light originating from total internal reflections and optical interferences in the absence of periodic nanostructures while being transparent under ambient light. The colors are finely tunable by adjusting the size of the micro-crescents, which can be further mixed to enrich the variety. Importantly, the pre-defined convex surface secures high stability of colors and enables structural coloration on target surfaces through direct deposition as inks. We anticipate this class of nanostructure-free structural colorants is pragmatic as invisible inks in particular for anti-counterfeiting patches and color cosmetics with distinctive impressions due to low-cost, scalable manufacturing, unique optical properties, and versatility.

Versatile Mechanochromic Sensor based on Highly Stretchable Chiral Liquid Crystalline Elastomer

A mechanochromic strain sensor that is capable of distinguishing the orientation, the location, and the degree of deformation based on the highly stretchable membrane of main-chain chiral liquid crystalline elastomer (MCLCE) is proposed. The MCLCE film is designed to exhibit uniform and significant color shift upon the small strain by using step-growth polymerization of liquid crystal (LC) oligomer and its phase-stabilization in solvent mesogen. As conformally placed on the bottom elastomer sheet, the MCLCE film shows multimodal, instantaneous color change for sensing arbitrary in-plane deformation, out-of-plane bending, and nonzero Gaussian deformation. Based on high freedom in the device design, it is also demonstrated that this sensor can display color patterns or encrypted images in response to the localized weight or strain. The simple and straightforward concept proposed here can be applicable in the fields of wearable devices, displays, and soft robotics.

Structurally colored aramid fabric construction and its application as a recyclable photonic catalyst

Structural colors can be used in fabric coloring due to their bright color and non-fading properties. However, it is still a challenge to construct structural color on high crystallinity, smooth surfaced and yellow colored aramid fabrics. Herein, for the first time, photonic crystals (PCs) with structural color were constructed on aramid fabrics by introducing dopamine to modify aramid fabrics and synthesizing monodisperse high refractive index zinc sulfide nanoparticles (ZnS). The influence of the PC coatings on the structural color, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the structurally colored aramid fabrics or fibers was further investigated. Moreover, due to the excellent catalytic properties of ZnS and the slow photon effects of PCs, the structurally colored fabrics showed good photocatalytic properties, which will be beneficial in reusing the catalysts, which is crucial to their application in the coloring of fabrics but also facilitates the recycling of waste PC coated aramid fabrics.

Interactive structural color displays of nano-architectonic 1-dimensional block copolymer photonic crystals: FOCUS ISSUE REVIEW

For changing environmental circumstances, interactive structural color (SC) observation is a promising strategy to store and express external information. SCs based on self-assembled block copolymer (BCP) photonic crystals have been a research focus due to their facile and diverse nanostructures relying on the volume ratio of blocks. Their unique nano-architectonics can reflect incident light due to constructive interference of the two different dielectric constituents. Their excellent ability to change nano-architectonics in response to external stimuli (i.e. humidity, temperature, pH, and mechanical force) allows for a programmable and stimuli-interactive BCP SC display. In this review, recent advances in programmable and stimuli-interactive SC displays with the 1-dimensional self-assembled BCP nano-architectonics are comprehensively discussed. First, this review focuses on the development of programmable BCP SCs that can store various information. Second, stimuli-interactive BCP SCs capable of responding reversibly to external stimuli are also addressed. Particularly, reversible BCP SC changes are suitable for rewritable displays and emerging human-interactive BCP SC displays that detect various human information through changes in electric signals with the simultaneous alteration of the BCP SCs. Based on previously reported literature, the current challenges in this research field are further discussed, and the perspective for future development is presented in terms of material, nano-architectonics, and process.

Wearable Hydrogel-Based Epidermal Sensor with Thermal Compatibility and Long Term Stability for Smart Colorimetric Multi-Signals Monitoring

Hydrogel-based wearable epidermal sensors (HWESs) have attracted widespread attention in health monitoring, especially considering their colorimetric readout capability. However, it remains challenging for HWESs to work at extreme temperatures with long term stability due to the existence of water. Herein, a wearable transparent epidermal sensor with thermal compatibility and long term stability for smart colorimetric multi-signals monitoring is developed, based on an anti-freezing and anti-drying hydrogel with high transparency (over 90% transmittance), high stretchability (up to 1500%) and desirable adhesiveness to various kinds of substrates. The hydrogel consists of polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide, and tannic acid-coated cellulose nanocrystals in glycerin/water binary solvents. When glycerin readily forms strong hydrogen bonds with water, the hydrogel exhibits outstanding thermal compatibility. Furthermore, the hydrogel maintains excellent adhesion, stretchability, and transparency after long term storage (45 days) or at subzero temperatures (-20 °C). For smart colorimetric multi-signals monitoring, the freestanding smart colorimetric HWESs are utilized for simultaneously monitoring the pH, T and light, where colorimetric signals can be read and stored by artificial intelligence strategies in a real time manner. In summary, the developed wearable transparent epidermal sensor holds great potential for monitoring multi-signals with visible readouts in long term health monitoring.

Fast Transport and Transformation of Biomacromolecular Substances via Thermo-Stimulated Active "Inhalation-Exhalation" Cycles of Hierarchically Structured Smart pNIPAM-DNA Hydrogels

Although smart hydrogels hold great promise in biosensing and biomedical applications, their response to external stimuli is governed by the passive diffusion-dependent substance transport between hydrogels and environments and within the 3D hydrogel matrices, resulting in slow response to biomacromolecules and limiting their extensive applications. Herein, inspired by the respiration systems of organisms, an active strategy to achieve highly efficient biomolecular substance transport through the thermo-stimulated "inhalation-exhalation" cycles of hydrogel matrices is demonstrated. The cryo-structured poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM)-DNA hydrogels, composed of functional DNA-tethered pNIPAM networks and free-water-containing macroporous channels, exhibit thermally triggered fast and reversible shrinking/swelling cycles with high-volume changes, which drive the formation of dynamic water stream to accelerate the intake of external substances and expelling of endogenous substances, thus promoting the functional properties of hydrogel systems. Demonstrated by catalytic DNAzyme and CRISPR-Cas12a-incorporating hydrogels, significantly enhanced catalytic efficiency with up to 280% and 390% is achieved, upon the introduction of active "inhalation-exhalation" cycles, respectively. Moreover, remotely near-infrared (NIR)-triggering of "inhalation-exhalation" cycles is achieved after the introduction of NIR-responsive MXene nanosheets into the hydrogel matrix. These hydrogel systems with enhanced substance transport and transformation properties hold promise in the development of more effective biosensing and therapeutic systems.

4D Direct Laser Writing of Submerged Structural Colors at the Microscale

Biomimetic stimuli-responsive structure colors (SCs) can improve the visualization and identification in the micro functional structure field such as information encryption/decryption and smart actuators. However, it is still challenging to develop the ability to 4D print arbitrary submerged colorful patterns with stimuli-responsive materials at the microscale. Herein, a hydrogel photoresist with feature resolution (98 nm) for the fabrication of 4D microscopic SCs by the femtosecond direct laser writing method is developed. The 4D printed woodpile SCs are grouped as pixel palettes with various laser parameters and they spanned almost the entire color space. The coloring mechanism of diffraction gratings is not only investigated by optics microscopy and spectroscopy but also supported by simulation. Moreover, the 4D printed hydrogel-integrated amphichromatic fish constructions and pixelated painting can visually discolor reversibly by regulating the solution pH. This finding promises an ideal coloring method for sensors, anti-counterfeiting labels, and transformable photonic devices.

Effect of Counterions on the Physicomechanical Properties of Copper-Nitrogen-Coordinated Metallosupramolecular Elastomers

Metallosupramolecular elastomers have attracted much attention due to their excellent mechanical properties, flexible tailoring of performance, and responsiveness to photo and thermal stimuli. The physicomechanical properties of metallosupramolecular elastomers are highly dependent on metal salts and ligand units; however, the role of counterions lacks practical exploration. To this end, we synthesized a simple acrylate copolymer model and introduced copper salts with different counterions to construct dynamic copper-nitrogen coordination cross-linked networks. This approach generated a series of elastomers with a tensile strength of over 10 MPa and a laser self-healing efficiency of over 90% within 2 min. In particular, we studied the effects of counterions on the thermodynamic, viscoelastic, mechanical, photothermal, and self-healing properties of the materials. Therefore, this work can provide instruction for the preparation and performance tailoring of metallosupramolecular elastomers.

Photonic Lignin with Tunable and Stimuli-Responsive Structural Color

Due to the growing sustainability and health requirements, structural color materials fabricated with functional natural polymers have attracted increasing attention in advanced optical and biomedical fields. Lignin has many attractive features such as great biocompatibility, ultraviolet resistance, antioxidant property, and thermostability, making it a promising natural resource to be fabricated as functional structural color materials. However, to date, the utilization of lignin as the building block for structural color materials is still a challenge due to its disordered structure. Herein, we present a strategy to transform disordered lignin into ordered "photonic lignin", in which monodisperse lignin colloidal spheres are prepared via solvent/antisolvent self-assembly, and then the periodic structure is constructed by centrifugal effect. The photonic lignin exhibits structural colors that are tunable by modulating the diameter of lignin colloidal spheres. We further demonstrate the application of photonic lignin as a natural polymer-based coating that shows bright, angle-independent, and stimuli-responsive structural colors. Moreover, the cytotoxicity assay indicates the excellent biocompatibility of photonic lignin with human skin, blood vessels, digestive systems, and other tissues, which demonstrates the great potential of photonic lignin in the applications such as implanted/wearable optical devices, advanced cosmetics, and smart food packaging.

Bioinspired Colloidal Photonic Composites: Fabrications and Emerging Applications

Organisms in nature have evolved unique structural colors and stimuli-responsive functions for camouflage, warning, and communication over millions of years, which are essential to their survival in harsh conditions. Inspired by these characteristics, colloidal photonic composites (CPCs) composed of colloidal photonic crystals embedded in the polymeric matrix are artificially prepared and show great promise in applications. This review focuses on the summary of building blocks, i.e., colloidal particles and polymeric matrices, and constructive strategies from the perspective of designing CPCs with robust performance and specific functionality. Furthermore, their state-of-the-art applications are also discussed, including colorful coatings, anti-counterfeiting, and regulation of photoluminescence, especially in the field of visualized sensing. Finally, current challenges and potential for future developments in this field are discussed. The purpose of this review is not only to clarify the design principle for artificial CPCs but also to serve as a roadmap for the exploration of next-generation photonic materials.

Magnetic-Fluorescent Responsive Janus Photonic Crystal Beads for Self-Destructive Anti-counterfeiting

In this study, we fabricate magnetic-fluorescent responsive Janus photonic crystal beads (JPCBs) based on poly(styrene-methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid) (p(St-MMA-AA)) colloidal nanoparticles, Fe₃O₄, and photobase generators used for self-destructive anti-counterfeiting. We synthesize two kinds of photobase generators that can react with fluorescamine to produce various fluorescence colors. A microfluidic method is used to obtain the Janus photonic crystal beads. The upper portions of the JPCBs are photonic crystals assembled with colloidal spheres, whereas the Fe₃O₄ settles down to the bottom of the JPCBs due to its higher density. Photobase generators are distributed in photonic crystal gaps. Because of the magnetism of the Fe₃O₄, the JPCBs could be flipped from one side to the other in the presence of a magnet. After being exposed to UVC light and fluorescamine, the JPCBs can fluoresce under UVA light. Then, we create Janus microbeads arrays with various types of beads and apply them to the visitor card, bracelet, and box label to provide irreversible and self-destructive anti-counterfeiting. The JPCBs are capable of being encoded and angle-independently displayed, which are crucial to their applications in anti-counterfeiting, information coding, and array display.

Designable Micro-/Nano-Structured Smart Polymeric Materials

Smart polymeric materials with dynamically tunable physico-chemical characteristics in response to changes of environmental stimuli, have received considerable attention in myriad fields. The diverse combination of their micro-/nano-structural and molecular designs creates promising and exciting opportunities for exploiting advanced smart polymeric materials. Engineering micro-/nano-structures into smart polymeric materials with elaborate molecular design enables intricate coordination between their structures and molecular-level response to cooperatively realize smart functions for practical applications. In this review, recent progresses of smart polymeric materials that combine micro-/nano-structures and molecular design to achieve designed advanced functions are highlighted. Smart hydrogels, gating membranes, gratings, milli-particles, micro-particles and microvalves are employed as typical examples to introduce their design and fabrication strategies. Meanwhile, the key roles of interplay between their micro-/nano-structures and responsive properties to realize the desired functions for their applications are emphasized. Finally, perspectives on the current challenges and opportunities of micro-/nano-structured smart polymeric materials for their future development are presented.

Solvent-Responsive Invisible Photonic Patterns with High Contrast for Fluorescence Emission Regulation and Anti-Counterfeiting

Invisible photonic patterns (IPPs) are photonic materials that can display hidden patterns under external stimulation and are attractive in anti-counterfeiting devices and information storage. In this work, we report a solvent-responsive invisible photonic pattern (SRIPP) with high contrast by polymerizing two monomers of acrylamide (AAm) and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) with different solubility parameters in different regions of poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) photonic gels. The two regions with different solvent responsiveness can shrink and swell in the same environment, thus causing the colors of different regions of photonic gel to shift in opposite directions from the initial state. As a result, the contrast of photonic patterns is significantly improved, increasing naked-eye visualization. In addition, by introducing fluorescent substances into the photonic gel and adjusting the photonic band gap (PBG) of photonic gels, we realize the regulation of fluorescence emission and display of fluorescence patterns by utilizing different PBGs on the SRIPP. Dynamic solvent responsiveness patterns and fluorescence patterns are integrated into a photonic gel, showing great potential in information storage and multiple-mode anti-counterfeiting applications.

Flexible thermochromic fabrics enabling dynamic colored display

Color-changeable fibers can provide diverse functions for intelligent wearable devices such as novel information displays and human-machine interfaces when woven into fabric. This work develops a low-cost, effective, and scalable strategy to produce thermochromic fibers by wet spinning. Through a combination of different thermochromic microcapsules, flexible fibers with abundant and reversible color changes are obtained. These color changes can be clearly observed by the naked eye. It is also found that the fibers exhibit excellent color-changing stability even after 8000 thermal cycles. Moreover, the thermochromic fibers can be fabricated on a large scale and easily woven or implanted into various fabrics with good mechanical performance. Driven by their good mechanical and physical characteristics, applications of thermochromic fibers in dynamic colored display are demonstrated. Dynamic quick response (QR) code display and recognition are successfully realized with thermochromic fabrics. This work well confirms the potential applications of thermochromic fibers in smart textiles, wearable devices, flexible displays, and human-machine interfaces.

Microfluidics-Assisted Fabrication of Dual Stopband Photonic Microcapsules and Their Applications for Anticounterfeiting

The assembly of two different kinds of colloidal particle-based photonic structures into an individual micro-object can achieve multifunctionality. In this study, core–shell photonic microcapsules with dual structural colors and photonic stop bands were prepared through a standard microfluidic technique. Photocurable resin suspension of silica nanoparticles and an aqueous suspension of nanogels were used as shell and core parts of microcapsules, respectively. The structural colors of shells and cores can be tuned by adjusting the concentrations of silica nanoparticles and soft nanogels in their corresponding suspensions. The individual microcapsules possess two distinct stop bands when the two suspensions are combined appropriately. Remarkably, the color information of the core part cannot be directly viewed at a macroscopic level (such as visual inspection) but can be detected at a microscopic scale (such as optical microscopy observation). The color information hidden enables the capability for information encryption and has potentially critical applications in anti-counterfeiting, display, and other fields.

Self-assembled liquid crystal architectures for soft matter photonics

Self-assembled architectures of soft matter have fascinated scientists for centuries due to their unique physical properties originated from controllable orientational and/or positional orders, and diverse optic and photonic applications. If one could know how to design, fabricate, and manipulate these optical microstructures in soft matter systems, such as liquid crystals (LCs), that would open new opportunities in both scientific research and practical applications, such as the interaction between light and soft matter, the intrinsic assembly of the topological patterns, and the multidimensional control of the light (polarization, phase, spatial distribution, propagation direction). Here, we summarize recent progresses in self-assembled optical architectures in typical thermotropic LCs and bio-based lyotropic LCs. After briefly introducing the basic definitions and properties of the materials, we present the manipulation schemes of various LC microstructures, especially the topological and topographic configurations. This work further illustrates external-stimuli-enabled dynamic controllability of self-assembled optical structures of these soft materials, and demonstrates several emerging applications. Lastly, we discuss the challenges and opportunities of these materials towards soft matter photonics, and envision future perspectives in this field.
