Ultrasmall Metal Nanoparticles Confined within Crystalline Nanoporous Materials: A Fascinating Class of Nanocatalysts

Spatially Confined Alloying of Pt Accelerates Mass Transport for Fuel Cell Oxygen Reduction

Pt-based alloy with high mass activity and durability is highly desired for proton exchange membrane fuel cells, yet a great challenge remains due to the high mass transport resistance near catalysts with lowering Pt loading. Herein, an extensible approach employing atomic layer deposition to accurately introduce a gas-phase metal precursor into platinum nanoparticles (NPs) pre-filled mesoporous channels is reported, achieved by controlling both the deposition site and quantity. Following the spatially confined alloying treatment, the prepared PtSn alloy catalyst within mesopores demonstrates a small size and homogeneous distribution (2.10 ± 0.53 nm). The membrane electrode assembly with mesoporous carbon-supported PtSn alloy catalyst achieves a high initial mass activity of 0.85 Amg Pt - 1 ${\mathrm{mg}}_{\mathrm{Pt}}^{-1}$ at 0.9 V, which is attributed to the smallest local oxygen transport resistance (3.68 S m-1) ever reported. The mass activity of the catalyst only decreases by 11% after 30000 cycles of accelerated durability test, representing superior full-cell durability among the reported Pt-based alloy catalysts. The enhanced activity and durability are attributed to the decreased adsorption energy of oxygen intermediates on Pt surface and the strong electronic interaction between Pt and Sn inhibiting Pt dissolution.

Ultrasensitive Electrochemiluminescence Biosensor Based on DNA-Bio-Bar-Code and Hybridization Chain Reaction Dual Signal Amplification for Exosomes Detection

Exosomes have received considerable attention as potent reference markers for the diagnosis of various neoplasms due to their close and direct relationship with the proliferation, adhesion, and migration of tumor. The ultrasensitive detection of cancer-derived low-abundance exosomes is imperative, but still a great challenge. Herein, we report an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor based on the DNA-bio-bar-code and hybridization chain reaction (HCR)-mediated dual signal amplification for the ultrasensitive detection of cancer-derived exosomes. In this system, two types of aptamers were modified on the magnetic nanoprobe (MNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with numerous bio-bar-code DNA, respectively, which formed "sandwich" structures in the presence of specific target exosomes. The "sandwich" structures were separated under magnetic field, and the numerous bio-bar-code DNA were released by dissolving AuNPs. The released bio-bar-code DNA triggered the HCR procedure to produce a good deal of long DNA duplex structure for embedding in hemin, which generated strong ECL signal in the presence of coreactors for ultrasensitive detection of exosomes. Under the optimal conditions, it exhibited a good linearly of exosomes ranging from 10 to 104 exosomes particle μL-1 with limit of detection down to 5.01 exosome particle μL-1. Furthermore, the high ratio of ECL signal and minor change of ECL intensity indicated the good specificity, stability, and repeatability of this ECL biosensor. Given the good performance for exosome analysis, this ultrasensitive ECL biosensor has a promising application in the clinical diagnosis of early cancers.

Insight into the Catalytic Oxidation Mechanism of Hydrogen Isotopes by Pt Clusters Confined by Silicalite-1

Highly efficient removal of low concentrations of hydrogen isotope gas in air is crucial for the safe operation of nuclear energy plants. Herein, silicalite-1-confined Pt cluster catalysts were used for the catalytic oxidation of hydrogen isotopes, and the related catalytic mechanism was revealed. Increased temperature in direct hydrogen reduction treatment slightly increased the size of Pt clusters from 1.6 nm at 400 °C to 1.8 nm at 600 °C. The catalyst reduced at 600 °C exhibited excellent performance (99%) in hydrogen isotope oxidation at 75 °C, as well as high stability and catalytic efficiency in continuous and intermittent operation for 7200 min. X-ray absorbance spectroscopy confirmed the existence of Pt clusters in the catalysts, and the theoretical results showed that the total net charge was -0.07 e, indicating a slight charge transfer from the zeolite to the Pt atoms. The metal-support interaction thermally stabilized Pt clusters and altered the metal electronic structure, which enhanced the catalytic activity following a hydroperoxyl (OOH)-mediated route. Based on the low reaction temperature, efficient hydrogen conversion rate, and high stability, the silicalite-1-confined Pt cluster catalyst is expected to be used in hydrogen isotope oxidation treatment to achieve nuclear safety.

Effective oxidation and adsorption of As(III) in water by nanoconfined Ce-Mn binary oxides with excellent reusability

Herein, a highly efficient As(III) purifier Ce-Mn@N201 with excellent reusability was developed by stepwise precipitating hydrated cerium(IV) oxides (HCO) and hydrated manganese(IV) oxides (HMO) inside N201, a widely-used gel-type anion exchange resin. Owing to confinement of unique nanopores in N201, the in-situ generated nanoparticles (NPs) inside Ce-Mn@N201 were highly dispersed with ultra-small sizes of around 2.6 nm. Results demonstrated that HMO NPs effectively oxidized As(III) to As(V) with the conversion of Mn(IV) to Mn(II), while the generated Mn2+ was mostly re-adsorbed onto the negatively-charged surface of HMO NPs. During the regeneration process by simple alkaline treatment, the re-adsorbed Mn2+ was firstly precipitated as (hydr)oxides of Mn(II) and then oxidized to HMO NPs by dissolved oxygen to fully refresh its oxidation capacity. Though HCO NPs mainly served as adsorbent for arsenic, they could partially oxidize As(III) to As(V) at the beginning, while the oxidation capacities continuously diminished with the irreversible conversion of Ce(IV) to Ce(III). In 10 consecutive adsorption-regeneration cycle, Ce-Mn@N201 efficiently decontaminated As(III) from 500 μg/L to below 5 μg/L with Mn2+ leaching less than 0.3% per batch. During 3 cyclic fixed-bed adsorptions, Ce-Mn@N201 steadily produced 8500-9150 bed volume (BV) and 3150-3350 BV drinkable water from the synthesized and real groundwater, respectively, with Mn leaching in effluent constantly < 100 μg/L.

Highly Dispersed Pd-CeOx Nanoparticles in Zeolite Nanosheets for Efficient CO2-Mediated Hydrogen Storage and Release

Formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation and CO2 hydrogenation to FA/formate represent promising methodologies for the efficient and clean storage and release of hydrogen, forming a CO2-neutral energy cycle. Here, we report the synthesis of highly dispersed and stable bimetallic Pd-based nanoparticles, immobilized on self-pillared silicalite-1 (SP-S-1) zeolite nanosheets using an incipient wetness co-impregnation technique. Owing to the highly accessible active sites, effective mass transfer, exceptional hydrophilicity, and the synergistic effect of the bimetallic species, the optimized PdCe0.2/SP-S-1 catalyst demonstrated unparalleled catalytic performance in both FA dehydrogenation and CO2 hydrogenation to formate. Remarkably, it achieved a hydrogen generation rate of 5974 molH2 molPd -1 h-1 and a formate production rate of 536 molformate molPd -1 h-1 at 50 °C, surpassing most previously reported heterogeneous catalysts under similar conditions. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the interfacial effect between Pd and cerium oxide clusters substantially reduces the activation barriers for both reactions, thereby increasing the catalytic performance. Our research not only showcases a compelling application of zeolite nanosheet-supported bimetallic nanocatalysts in CO2-mediated hydrogen storage and release but also contributes valuable insights towards the development of safe, efficient, and sustainable hydrogen technologies.

Hierarchical MOFs with Good Catalytic Properties and Structural Stability in Oxygen-Rich and High-Temperature Environments

Metal-organic framework materials are ideal materials characterized by open frameworks, adjustable components, and high catalytic activity. They are extensively utilized for catalysis. Due to decomposition and structural collapse under high temperatures and an oxygen-rich environment, the potential of thermal catalysis is greatly limited. In this research, Co-rich hollow spheres (Co-HSs) with a gradient composition are designed and synthesized to investigate their thermal catalytic properties in the ammonium perchlorate（AP）system. The results demonstrate that Co-HSs@AP exhibits good thermal catalytic activity and a high-temperature decomposition of 292.5 °C, which is 121.6 °C lower than pure AP. The hierarchical structure confers structural stability during the thermal decomposition process. Thermogravimetry-infrared indicates that the inclusion of Co-HSs successfully boosts the level of reactive oxygen species and achieves thorough oxidation of NH3. Based on the above phenomenon, macro dynamics calculations are carried out. The results show that Co-HSs can promote the circulation of lattice oxygen and reactive oxygen species and the multidimensional diffusion of NH3 in an oxygen-rich environment. This material has significant potential for application in the fields of thermal catalysis and ammonia oxidation.

Lattice-Strained Bimetallic Nanocatalysts: Fundamentals of Synthesis and Structure

Bimetallic nanostructured catalysts have shown great promise in the areas of energy, environment and magnetics. Tunable composition and electronic configurations due to lattice strain at bimetal interfaces have motivated researchers worldwide to explore them industrial applications. However, to date, the fundamentals of the synthesis of lattice-mismatched bimetallic nanocrystals are still largely uninvestigated for most supported catalyst materials. Therefore, in this work, we have conducted a detailed review of the synthesis and structural characterization of bimetallic nanocatalysts, particularly for renewable energies. In particular, the synthesis of Pt, Au and Pd bimetallic particles in a liquid phase has been critically discussed. The outcome of this review is to provide industrial insights of the rational design of cost-effective nanocatalysts for sustainable conversion technologies.

Spontaneous Formation of Ultrasmall Noble Metal Nanoparticles on Cobalt-Based Layered Double Hydroxide for Electrochemical and Environmental Catalysis

Supported noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) are appealing for energy and environment catalysis. To facilitate the loading of NMNPs, in situ reduction of Mn+ on the support with extra reductants/surfactants is adopted, but typically results in aggregated NMNPs with uneven size distributions or blocked active sites of the NMNPs. Herein, the use of cobalt layered double hydroxide (Co-LDH) is proposed as both support and reductant for the preparation of supported NMNPs with ultrasmall sizes and even distributions. The resultant Co-LDH-supported NMNPs exhibit excellent catalytic performance and stability. For example, Ir/Co-LDH displays a low overpotential of 188 mV (10 mA cm-2) for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction and a long-term stability over 100 h (100 mA cm-2) in overall water splitting. Ru/Co-LDH can achieve a 4-nitrophenol reduction with high rate of 0.36 min-1 and S2- detection with low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 µm. Overall, this work provides a green and effective strategy to fabricate supported NMNPs with greatly improved catalytic performances.

Crystal epitaxy-confined Pd, Ti-bimetallic sites in the MFI zeolite for benzylalcohol oxidation

A general strategy for confining Pd, Ti-bimetallic sites in the MFI zeolite by crystal epitaxy was developed. The tailored spatial intimacy of the bimetallic sites demonstrated distinct catalytic performance for the oxidation of benzylalcohol. The related mechanism was clarified and afforded a valuable pathway for rational catalyst design.

Atomically Dispersed Metal Catalysts for the Conversion of CO2 into High-Value C2+ Chemicals

The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added chemicals with two or more carbons (C2+) is a promising strategy that cannot only mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions but also reduce the excessive dependence on fossil feedstocks. In recent years, atomically dispersed metal catalysts (ADCs), including single-atom catalysts (SACs), dual-atom catalysts (DACs), and single-cluster catalysts (SCCs), emerged as attractive candidates for CO2 fixation reactions due to their unique properties, such as the maximum utilization of active sites, tunable electronic structure, the efficient elucidation of catalytic mechanism, etc. This review provides an overview of significant progress in the synthesis and characterization of ADCs utilized in photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and thermocatalytic conversion of CO2 toward high-value C2+ compounds. To provide insights for designing efficient ADCs toward the C2+ chemical synthesis originating from CO2, the key factors that influence the catalytic activity and selectivity are highlighted. Finally, the relevant challenges and opportunities are discussed to inspire new ideas for the generation of CO2-based C2+ products over ADCs.

Recent Advances in Electrochemiluminescence Biosensors for MicroRNA Detection

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) as an analytical technology with a perfect combination of electrochemistry and spectroscopy has received considerable attention in bioanalysis due to its high sensitivity and broad dynamic range. Given the selectivity of bio-recognition elements and the high sensitivity of the ECL analysis technique, ECL biosensors are powerful platforms for the sensitive detection of biomarkers, achieving the accurate prognosis and diagnosis of diseases. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial biomarkers involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, whose aberrant expression is often related to serious diseases, especially cancers. ECL biosensors can fulfill the highly sensitive and selective requirements for accurate miRNA detection, prompting this review. The ECL mechanisms are initially introduced and subsequently categorize the ECL biosensors for miRNA detection in terms of the quenching agents. Furthermore, the work highlights the signal amplification strategies for enhancing ECL signal to improve the sensitivity of miRNA detection and finally concludes by looking at the challenges and opportunities in ECL biosensors for miRNA detection.

Confinement of CsPbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals into Extra-large-pore Zeolite for Efficient and Stable Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs), renowned for their outstanding optoelectronic properties, hold significant promise as photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the low stability and insufficient exposure of catalytically active sites of bulky MHPs seriously impair their catalytic efficiency. Herein, we utilized an extra-large-pore zeolite ZEO-1 (JZO) as a host to confine and stabilize the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (3.4 nm) for boosting hydrogen iodide (HI) splitting. The as-prepared CsPbBr3@ZEO-1 featured sufficiently exposed active sites, superior stability in acidic media, along with intrinsic extra-large pores of ZEO-1 that were favorable for molecule/ion adsorption and diffusion. Most importantly, the unique nanoconfinement effect of ZEO-1 led to the narrowing of the band gap of CsPbBr3, allowing for more efficient light utilization. As a result, the photocatalytic HER rate of the as-prepared CsPbBr3@ZEO-1 photocatalyst was increased to 1734 μmol ⋅ h-1 ⋅ g-1 (CsPbBr3) under visible light irradiation compared with bulk CsPbBr3 (11 μmol ⋅ h-1 ⋅ g-1 (CsPbBr3)), and the long-term durability (36 h) can be achieved. Furthermore, Pt was incorporated with well-dispersed CsPbBr3 nanocrystals into ZEO-1, resulting in a significant enhancement in activity (4826 μmol ⋅ h-1 ⋅ g-1 (CsPbBr3)), surpassing most of the Pt-integrated perovskite-based photocatalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and charge-carrier dynamics investigation revealed that the dramatically boosted photocatalytic performance of Pt/CsPbBr3@ZEO-1 could be attributed to the promotion of charge separation and transfer, as well as to the substantially lowered energy barrier for HER. This work highlights the advantage of extra-large-pore zeolites as the nanoscale platform to accommodate multiple photoactive components, opening up promising prospects in the design and exploitation of novel zeolite-confined photocatalysts for energy harvesting and storage.

In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Methods for Lithium-Ion Batteries

In situ Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) stands as an invaluable instrument for the real-time examination of the structural changes in materials. It features ultrahigh spatial resolution and powerful analytical capability, making it significantly versatile across diverse fields. Particularly in the realm of Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs), in situ TEM is extensively utilized for real-time analysis of phase transitions, degradation mechanisms, and the lithiation process during charging and discharging. This review aims to provide an overview of the latest advancements in in situ TEM applications for LIBs. Additionally, it compares the suitability and effectiveness of two techniques: the open cell technique and the liquid cell technique. The technical aspects of both the open cell and liquid cell techniques are introduced, followed by a comparison of their applications in cathodes, anodes, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, and lithium dendrite growth in LIBs. Lastly, the review concludes by stimulating discussions on possible future research trajectories that hold potential to expedite the progression of battery technology.

MgFe2O4@Tris magnetic nanoparticles: an effective and powerful catalyst for one-pot synthesis of pyrazolopyranopyrimidine and tetrahydrodipyrazolopyridine derivatives

Magnesium (Mg) as a metal has wide applications, but its use in chemical reactions is rarely reported. Currently, magnesium catalytic processes are being developed to synthesize basic chemical compounds. Therefore, an effective and recyclable nano-catalyst was synthesized using MgFe2O4@Tris in this study. The structure of MgFe2O4@Tris was characterized by various techniques including Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques. Finally, the catalytic activity of this nano-catalyst was evaluated for the synthesis of pyrazolopyranopyrimidine and tetrahydrodipyrazolopyridine derivatives. Among the advantages of this catalyst are its high catalytic activity, high yields, use of environmentally friendly solvents, easy magnetic separation, and the possibility of reusing the catalyst.

Recent progress in the synthesis and applications of covalent organic framework-based composites

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have historically been of interest to researchers in different areas due to their distinctive characteristics, including well-ordered pores, large specific surface area, and structural tunability. In the past few years, as COF synthesis techniques developed, COF-based composites fabricated by integrating COFs and other functional materials including various kinds of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles, ionic liquids, metal-organic frameworks, silica, polymers, enzymes and carbon nanomaterials have emerged as a novel kind of porous hybrid material. Herein, we first provide a thorough summary of advanced strategies for preparing COF-based composites; then, the emerging applications of COF-based composites in diverse fields due to their synergistic effects are systematically highlighted, including analytical chemistry (sensing, extraction, membrane separation, and chromatographic separation) and catalysis. Finally, the current challenges associated with future perspectives of COF-based composites are also briefly discussed to inspire the advancement of more COF-based composites with excellent properties.

Subnanometric Bismuth Clusters Confined in Pyrochlore-Bi2 Sn2 O7 Enable Remarkable CO2 Photoreduction

The development of highly efficient photocatalysts for conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) with water (H2 O) into chemical fuels is of great importance for energy sustainability and carbon resource utilization. Herein, we demonstrated a facile hydrothermal method for in situ construction of subnanometric Bi metallic clusters in pyrochlore-Bi2 Sn2 O7 frameworks, leading to the remarkable improvements of photocatalytic performances for CO2 reduction into CO in the absence of sacrificial reagent. More specifically, an outstanding CO evolution activity of 114.1 μmol g-1  h-1 has been achieved, more than 20-fold improvement compared with the pristine Bi2 Sn2 O7 (5.7 μmol g-1  h-1 ). Detailed experiments together with in situ characterizations reveal that the spatially confined Bi clusters could significantly promote charge-separation/electron-enrichment and adsorption/activation of CO2 molecules, which provides highly efficient reaction channels to facilitate the generation of *COOH intermediate as well as the subsequent desorption of *CO towards CO formation. These demonstrations provide an important knowledge for precise design and fabrication of highly efficient photocatalysts for CO2 conversion into solar fuels.

Recent progress of MOF-functionalized nanocomposites: From structure to properties

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel crystalline porous materials assembled from metal ions and organic ligands. The adaptability of their design and the fine-tuning of the pore structures make them stand out in porous materials. Furthermore, by integrating MOF guest functional materials with other hosts, the novel composites have synergistic benefits in numerous fields such as batteries, supercapacitors, catalysis, gas storage and separation, sensors, and drug delivery. This article starts by examining the structural relationship between the host and guest materials, providing a comprehensive overview of the research advancements in various types of MOF-functionalized composites reported to date. The review focuses specifically on four types of spatial structures, including MOFs being (1) embedded in nanopores, (2) immobilized on surface, (3) coated as shells and (4) assembled into hybrids. In addition, specific design ideas for these four MOF-based composites are presented. Some of them involve in situ synthesis method, solvothermal method, etc. The specific properties and applications of these materials are also mentioned. Finally, a brief summary of the advantages of these four types of MOF composites is given. Hopefully, this article will help researchers in the design of MOF composite structures.

Synergistic Effects of Pyrrolic N/Pyridinic N on Ultrafast Microwave Synthesized Porous CoP/Ni2P to Boost Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Transition metal phosphides are ideal inexpensive electrocatalysts for water-splitting, but the catalytic activity still falls behind that of noble metal catalysts. Therefore, developing valid strategies to boost the electrocatalytic activity is urgent to promote large-scale applications. Herein, a microwave combustion strategy (20 s) is applied to synthesize N-doped CoP/Ni2P heterojunctions (N-CoP/Ni2P) with porous structure. The porous structure expands the specific surface area and accelerates the mass transport efficiency. Importantly, the pyrrolic N/pyridinic N content is adjusted by changing the amount of urea during the synthesis process and then optimizing the adsorption/desorption capacity for H*/OH* to enhance the catalyst activity. Then, the synthesized N-CoP/Ni2P exhibits small overpotentials of 111 and 133 mV for HER in acidic and alkaline electrolytes and 290 mV for OER in alkaline electrolytes. This work provides an original and efficient approach to the synthesis of porous metal phosphides.

Highly dispersed Pd-based pseudo-single atoms in zeolites for hydrogen generation and pollutant disposal

Atomically dispersed metal catalysts with excellent activity and stability are highly desired in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we synthesized zeolite-encaged Pd-based pseudo-single atoms via a facile and energy-efficient ligand-protected direct H2 reduction method. Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, extended X-ray absorption, and pair distribution function measurements reveal that the metal species are close to atomic-level dispersion and completely confined within the intersectional channels of silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite with the MFI framework. The Pd@S-1-H exhibits excellent activity and stability in methane combustion reactions with a complete combustion temperature of 390 °C, and no deactivation is observed even after 100 h on stream. The optimized bimetallic 0.8Pd0.2Ni(OH)2@S-1-H catalyst exhibits an excellent H2 generation rate from FA decomposition without any additives, affording a superhigh turnover frequency up to 9308 h-1 at 333 K, which represents the top activity among all of the best heterogeneous catalysts under similar conditions. Significantly, zeolite-encaged metal catalysts are first used for Cr(vi) reduction coupled with formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation and show a superhigh turnover number of 2980 mol(Cr2O72-) mol(Pd)-1 at 323 K, surpassing all of the previously reported catalysts. This work demonstrates that zeolite-encaged pseudo-single atom catalysts are promising in efficient hydrogen storage and pollutant disposal applications.

Fabrication of a PdCu@SiO2@Cu core-shell-satellite catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene

Pd25Cu75@SiO2 core-shell and PdCu@SiO2@Cu core-shell-satellite architectures were fabricated by silica-coating of Pd25Cu75 colloids in a reverse microemulsion. Hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate in the reverse microemulsion containing hydrazine and ammonia yielded a core-shell structure, while the use of ammonia only, instead of a mixture of hydrazine and ammonia, formed a core-shell-satellite structure. The ammonia-leached copper species migrated onto the developing silica shell and formed smaller Cu clusters. Air-calcination at 673 K followed by H2-reduction at 773 K of the as-synthesized samples removed the organic surfactants and generated the permeable porous silica shells. The core-shell catalyst consisted of a metal core (8.5 nm) and a silica shell (7.8 nm), while the core-shell-satellite catalyst was composed by a metal core (7.0 nm), a silica shell (8.0 nm), and satellite Cu clusters (1.4 nm) on the silica shell. When used to catalyze the selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene, the core-shell-satellite catalyst showed substantially enhanced activity and stability because of the synergetic catalysis between the metal core and the surrounding Cu clusters.

Water-soluble ionic carbon nitride as unconventional stabilizer for highly catalytically active ultrafine gold nanoparticles

Ultrafine metal nanoparticles (NPs) hold promise for applications in many fields, including catalysis. However, ultrasmall NPs are typically prone to aggregation, which often leads to performance losses, such as severe deactivation in catalysis. Conventional stabilization strategies (e.g., immobilization, embedding, or surface modification by capping agents) are typically only partly effective and often lead to loss of catalytic activity. Herein, a novel type of stabilizers based on water-soluble ionic (K+ and Na+ containing) polymeric carbon nitride (i.e., K,Na-poly(heptazine imide) = K,Na-PHI) is reported that enables effective stabilization of highly catalytically active ultrafine (size of ∼2-3 nm) gold NPs. Experimental and theoretical comparative studies using different structural units of K,Na-PHI (i.e., cyanurate, melonate, cyamelurate) indicate that the presence of functionalized heptazine moieties is crucial for the synthesis and stabilization of small Au NPs. The K,Na-PHI-stabilized Au NPs exhibit remarkable dispersibility and outstanding stability even in solutions of high ionic strength, which is ascribed to more effective charge delocalization in the large heptazine units, resulting in more effective electrostatic stabilization of Au NPs. The outstanding catalytic performance of Au NPs stabilized by K,Na-PHI is demonstrated using the selective reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol by NaBH4 as a model reaction, in which they outperform even the benchmark "naked" Au NPs electrostatically stabilized by excess NaBH4. This work thus establishes ionic carbon nitrides (PHI) as alternative capping agents enabling effective stabilization without compromising surface catalysis, and opens up a route for further developments in utilizing PHI-based stabilizers for the synthesis of high-performance nanocatalysts.

Mixture Adsorption in Nanoporous Zeolite and at Its External Surface: In-Pore and Surface Selectivity

Using toluene, ethylene, and water as gas compounds with different representative molecular interactions, we perform atom-scale simulations for their mixtures to investigate the selectivity of the core nanoporosity and external surface in a prototypical zeolite. As expected, the overall behavior suggests that increasing the pressure of a given component promotes the desorption of the coadsorbing species. However, for water-toluene mixtures, we identify that the pseudohydrogen bonding between water and toluene leads to beneficial coadsorption as toluene adsorption in the low-pressure range promotes water adsorption. Moreover, when the zeolite is completely filled with water, toluene adsorption does not occur due to steric repulsion, and ethylene shows oversolubility as the amount of ethylene per water molecule is significantly larger than in bulk water. The underlying oversolubility mechanism is found to be due to localized ethylene adsorption in the density minima arising from the layering of water in nanoconfinement. Despite these specific effects, the relatively weak coadsorption effects in the zeolite nanoporosity, which are found to be reasonably captured using the ideal adsorbed solution theory, arise from the fact that adsorption of these gases having different molecular sizes occurs in distinct pore regions (channel type, channel intersection). Finally, in contrast to confinement in the nanoporosity, mixture adsorption at the external surface does not show coadsorption effects as it mostly follows the Henry regime. These results show that selectivity is mostly governed by the confinement effects as the external surface leads to a selectivity loss.

Atomically Dispersed Cobalt/Copper Dual-Metal Catalysts for Synergistically Boosting Hydrogen Generation from Formic Acid

The development of practical materials for (de)hydrogenation reactions is a prerequisite for the launch of a sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, we present the design and construction of an atomically dispersed dual-metal site Co/Cu-N-C catalyst allowing significantly improved dehydrogenation of formic acid, which is available from carbon dioxide and green hydrogen. The active catalyst centers consist of specific CoCuN6 moieties with double-N-bridged adjacent metal-N4 clusters decorated on a nitrogen-doped carbon support. At optimal conditions the dehydrogenation performance of the nanostructured material (mass activity 77.7 L ⋅ gmetal -1  ⋅ h-1 ) is up to 40 times higher compared to commercial 5 % Pd/C. In situ spectroscopic and kinetic isotope effect experiments indicate that Co/Cu-N-C promoted formic acid dehydrogenation follows the so-called formate pathway with the C-H dissociation of HCOO* as the rate-determining step. Theoretical calculations reveal that Cu in the CoCuN6 moiety synergistically contributes to the adsorption of intermediate HCOO* and raises the d-band center of Co to favor HCOO* activation and thereby lower the reaction energy barrier.

Synthesis of Azoxy Compounds: from Copper Compounds to Mesoporous Silica-Encaged Ultrasmall Copper Catalysts

Azoxy compounds have aroused extensive attention due to their unique biological activities, but the chemical synthesis of these compounds often suffers from limitations due to their requirement for stoichiometric oxidants, high costs, and restricted substrate range. Herein, a series of azoxy compounds were constructed via facile coupling reactions by using cost-effective N-methoxyformamide and nitroso compounds over Cu-based catalysts, affording high product yields with excellent tolerance of functional groups. Significantly, the mesoporous silica nanosphere-encapsulated ultrasmall Cu (Cu@MSN) catalyst was developed via a one-pot synthetic method and first used for the synthesis of azoxy compounds. As compared with copper salt catalysts, the Cu@MSN catalyst exhibited remarkably enhanced catalytic activity and superior recycling stability. Such a Cu@MSN catalyst overcame the inherent drawbacks of low activity, fast deactivation, and difficult recycling of traditional metal salt catalysts in organic reactions. This work provides a green and efficient method for the construction of azoxy compounds and also creates new prospects for the application of nanoporous materials confined metal catalysts in organic synthesis.

Carbonylative Self-Coupling of Aryl Boronic Acids Using a Confined Pd Catalyst within Melamine Dendron and Fibrous Nano-Silica: A CO Surrogate Approach

Development of heterogeneous catalysts with tunable activity and selectivity has posed a persistent challenge. This study addresses this challenge by fabricating a hybrid environment through the combination of mesoporous silica and N-rich melamine dendron via covalent grafting, allowing for controllable growth and encapsulation of Pd NPs. This catalyst presented an excellent catalytic activity for the oxidative carbonylative self-coupling of aryl boronic acids to afford symmetric biaryl ketones using N-formyl saccharin as a sustainable solid CO source and Cu as a co-catalyst.

Preparation of magnetically separable and low-cost MC-FePd3NPs with enhanced catalytic activity in the reduction of p-nitrophenol

To obtain a magnetically separable, low-cost and highly efficient reduction catalyst, microbial carbon-loaded bimetallic palladium/iron nanoparticles (MC-FePd3NPs) were synthesized in this study by using waste yeast residue doped with iron during the preparation process of microbial carbon-loaded monometallic palladium nanoparticles (MC-Pd NPs). The morphology, crystal structure, magnetic properties and catalytic performance of MC-FePd3NPs for the reduction ofp-nitrophenol (p-NP) were investigated by various characterization techniques, such as SEM-EDS, TEM, XRD, PPMS-9 and UV-vis spectroscopy. The catalytic experiments showed that the MC-FePd3NPs prepared under pyrolysis conditions at 700 °C had an apparent rate constant of 1.85 × 10-1s-1which is better than the rate constants of MC-Pd NPs and other palladium-based nanocatalytic materials reported so far. The amount of palladium used in the synthesis of MC-FePd3NPs was half that of MC-Pd NPs. The catalyst exhibited soft magnetic ordering behavior and still showed a catalytic efficiency of 97.4% after five consecutive reaction cycles. Furthermore, employing MC-FePd3NPs reduces the costs of catalyst preparation and use in production. MC-FePd3NPs with efficient catalytic properties, facile magnetic separation and recyclability, and low costs of preparation and use have considerable potential for industrial applications.

Integration of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Metals: Synergy for Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis is a highly promising technology widely used in clean energy conversion. There is a continuing need to develop advanced electrocatalysts to catalyze the critical electrochemical reactions. Integrating metal active species, including various metal nanostructures (NSs) and atomically dispersed metal sites (ADMSs), into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) leads to the formation of promising heterogeneous electrocatalysts that take advantage of both components. Among them, MOFs can provide support and protection for the active sites on guest metals, and the resulting host-guest interactions can synergistically enhance the electrocatalytic performance. In this review, three key concerns on MOF-metal heterogeneous electrocatalysts regarding the catalytic sites, conductivity, and catalytic stability are first presented. Then, rational integration strategies of MOFs and metals, including the integration of metal NSs via surface anchoring, space confining, and MOF coating, as well as the integration of ADMSs either with the metal nodes/linkers or within the pores of MOFs, along with their recent progress on synergistic cooperation for specific electrochemical reactions are summarized. Finally, current challenges and possible solutions in applying these increasingly concerned electrocatalysts are also provided.

Ag2(0) dimers within a thioether-functionalized MOF catalyze the CO2 to CH4 hydrogenation reaction

Ultrasmall silver clusters in reduced state are difficult to synthesize since silver atoms tend to rapidly aggregate into bigger entities. Here, we show that dimers of reduced silver (Ag₂) are formed within the framework of a metal-organic framework provided with thioether arms in their walls (methioMOF), after reduction with NaBH₄ of the corresponding Ag⁺-methioMOF precursor. The resulting Ag₂-methioMOF catalyzes the methanation reaction of carbon dioxide (CO₂ to CH₄ hydrogenation reaction) under mild reaction conditions (1 atm CO₂, 4 atm H₂, 140 °C), with production rates much higher than Ag on alumina and even comparable to the state-of-the-art Ru on alumina catalyst (Ru-Al₂O₃) under these reaction conditions, according to literature results.

Structural water molecules dominated p band intermediate states as a unified model for the origin on the photoluminescence emission of noble metal nanoclusters: from monolayer protected clusters to cage confined nanoclusters

In the past several decades, noble metal nanoclusters (NMNCs) have been developed as an emerging class of luminescent materials due to their superior photo-stability and biocompatibility, but their luminous quantum yield is relatively low and the physical origin of the bright photoluminescence (PL) of NMNCs remain elusive, which limited their practical application. As the well-defined structure and composition of NMNCs have been determined, in this mini-review, the effect of each component (metal core, ligand shell and interfacial water) on their PL properties and corresponded working mechanism were comprehensively introduced, and a model that structural water molecules dominated p band intermediate state was proposed to give a unified understanding on the PL mechanism of NMNCs and a further perspective to the future developments of NMNCs by revisiting the development of our studies on the PL mechanism of NMNCs in the past decade.

Exploration of spatial confinement and ligand effects for the oxygen reduction reaction on Fe-Nx embedded hole-graphene

In this work, we constructed theoretical models by embedding Fe-TCPP and Fe-(mIM)_n (n = 2,3,4) active sites into hole-graphene, and the structural stability was evaluated using molecular dynamics simulations. Based on the theoretical models, we systematically studied the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism and the effect of spatial confinement and ligands with DFT calculations. The analysis of the ORR reaction pathway shows that Fe-TCPP and Fe-(mIM)₄ have good catalytic activity. Subsequently, the confinement effect (5-14 Å) was introduced to investigate its influence on the catalytic activity. The Fe-TCPP and Fe-(mIM)₄ active sites have the lowest overpotential at an axial space of 8 Å and 9 Å, respectively. We select four ligands (bpy, pya, CH₃, and bIm) to explore their effect on the catalytic activity of the Fe-TCPP active site. With the modification of bpy, pya, and bIm_N (Fe-N₄ sites become Fe-N₅ active sites), the overpotential decreases by 26-31%. In the present work, the best catalytic system is Fe-TCPP_pya, which is on the top of the volcano plot.

MOF-Triggered Synthesis of Subnanometer Ag02 Clusters and Fe3+ Single Atoms: Heterogenization Led to Efficient and Synergetic One-Pot Catalytic Reactions

The combination of well-defined Fe³⁺ isolated single-metal atoms and Ag₂ subnanometer metal clusters within the channels of a metal-organic framework (MOF) is reported and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction for the first time. The resulting hybrid material, with the formula [Ag⁰₂(Ag⁰)_1.34Fe^III_0.66]@Na^I₂{Ni^II₄[Cu^II₂(Me₃mpba)₂]₃}·63H₂O (Fe³⁺Ag⁰₂@MOF), is capable of catalyzing the unprecedented direct conversion of styrene to phenylacetylene in one pot. In particular, Fe³⁺Ag⁰₂@MOF─which can easily be obtained in a gram scale─exhibits superior catalytic activity for the TEMPO-free oxidative cross-coupling of styrenes with phenyl sulfone to give vinyl sulfones in yields up to >99%, which are ultimately transformed, in situ, to the corresponding phenylacetylene product. The results presented here constitute a paradigmatic example of how the synthesis of different metal species in well-defined solid catalysts, combined with speciation of the true metal catalyst of an organic reaction in solution, allows the design of a new challenging reaction.

Review on supported metal catalysts with partial/porous overlayers for stabilization

Heterogeneous catalysts of supported metals are important for both liquid-phase and gas-phase chemical transformations which underpin the petrochemical sector and manufacture of bulk or fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Conventional supported metal catalysts (SMC) suffer from deactivation resulting from sintering, leaching, coking and so on. Besides the choice of active species (e.g. atoms, clusters, nanoparticles) to maximize catalytic performances, strategies to stabilize active species are imperative for rational design of catalysts, particularly for those catalysts that work under heated and corrosive reaction conditions. The complete encapsulation of metal active species within a matrix (e.g. zeolites, MOFs, carbon, etc.) or core-shell arrangements is popular. However, the use of partial/porous overlayers (PO) to preserve metals, which simultaneously ensures the accessibility of active sites through controlling the size/shape of diffusing reactants and products, has not been systematically reviewed. The present review identifies the key design principles for fabricating supported metal catalysts with partial/porous overlayers (SMCPO) and demonstrates their advantages versus conventional supported metals in catalytic reactions.

Advancements in Basic Zeolites for Biodiesel Production via Transesterification

The excessive utilization of petroleum diesel has led to the depletion of fossil resources and severe environmental pollution. Biodiesel produced from renewable triglycerides (TGs) or waste lipids is a low-emission fuel substitute for diesel. Biodiesel is mainly produced by transesterification reactions over homogeneous base catalysts with excellent activity and low cost. In comparison, solid base catalysts are more attractive due to their lower environmental impact and simpler production and purification processes. It remains a challenge to further improve the stability and activity of solid base catalysts. Because of the high surface area, superior stability, and tunable basicity, basic zeolites, especially two-dimensional zeolites, have emerged as promising solid basic catalysts for the transesterification of TGs. In this review, we present recent advancements in the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic performance of basic zeolites for the transesterification of TGs. Challenges and development prospects of basic zeolites for biodiesel production via transesterification are also pointed out. We expect that this review will inspire the more efficient and rational design of zeolites for sustainable fuel production.

Synergistic Mechanism of Sub-Nanometric Ru Clusters Anchored on Tungsten Oxide Nanowires for High-Efficient Bifunctional Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

The construction of strong interactions and synergistic effects between small metal clusters and supports offers a great opportunity to achieve high-performance and cost-effective heterogeneous catalysis, however, studies on its applications in electrocatalysis are still insufficient. Herein, it is reported that W₁₈ O₄₉ nanowires supported sub-nanometric Ru clusters (denoted as Ru SNC/W₁₈ O₄₉ NWs) constitute an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution/oxidation reactions (HER and HOR) under acidic condition. Microstructural analyses, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Ru SNCs with an average RuRu coordination number of 4.9 are anchored to the W₁₈ O₄₉ NWs via RuOW bonds at the interface. The strong metal-support interaction leads to the electron-deficient state of Ru SNCs, which enables a modulated RuH strength. Furthermore, the unique proton transport capability of the W₁₈ O₄₉ also provides a potential migration channel for the reaction intermediates. These components collectively enable the remarkable performance of Ru SNC/W₁₈ O₄₉ NWs for hydrogen electrocatalysis with 2.5 times of exchange current density than that of carbon-supported Ru nanoparticles, and even rival the state-of-the-art Pt catalyst. This work provides a new prospect for the development of supported sub-nanometric metal clusters for efficient electrocatalysis.

A General and Scalable Approach to Sulfur-Doped Mono-/Bi-/Trimetallic Nanoparticles Confined in Mesoporous Carbon

Metal nanoparticles confined in porous carbon materials have been widely used in various heterogeneous catalytic processes due to their enhanced activity and stability. However, fabrication of such catalysts in a facile and scalable way remains challenging. Herein, we report a general and scalable thiol-assisted strategy to synthesize sulfur-doped mono-/bi-/trimetallic nanoparticles confined in mesoporous carbon (S-M@MC, M = Pt, Pd, Rh, Co, Zn, etc.), involving only two synthetic steps, i.e., a hydrothermal process and pyrolysis. The strategy is based on coordination chemistry and hydro-phobic interaction that the metal precursors coordinated with the hydrophobic thiol ligands are located at the hydrophobic core of micelles, in situ confined in the hydrothermally prepared mesostructured polymer, and then converted into sulfur-doped metal nanoparticles confined in MC after pyrolysis. It is demonstrated that the S-PtCo@MC exhibits enhanced catalytic activity and improved durability toward acidic hydrogen evolution reaction due to the confinement effect and S-doping.

Tunable Luminescence of Silver Nanoclusters Confined in SOD/FAU Zeolites and Selective Sensing for Organic Amine

A series of Ag-zeolite luminescent composites are prepared based on SOD and FAUY zeolites, and the effect of zeolite host particle size on their dynamic luminescent emission properties was discussed for the first time. The relationship between zeolite particle size and the nucleation of silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) is revealed. With the increase of zeolite particle size from nanometers to microns, the luminescent color of both Ag-SOD and Ag-Y composites shows significant blue shift. The observed tunable luminescence can be accounted for the slower nucleation rate of AgNCs in micron-scale zeolites with longer channels, resulting in smaller nuclearity of AgNCs within large-size zeolites, through the characterization of extended X-ray absorption fine structure, implying the important roles played by the zeolite themselves in determining the luminescence properties. Moreover, the composites prepared by us feature simple signal transduction, fast response (30 s), and excellent selectivity and sensitivity for discriminative luminescence detection of triethylamine and ethylamine, and they have good reversible luminescence response after sensing HAc gas, which might imply the potential applications in the volatile organic amine detection and information encryption field.

Metal-organic frameworks as chemical nanoreactors for the preparation of catalytically active metal compounds

Since the emergence of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a myriad of thrilling properties and applications, in a wide range of fields, have been reported for these materials, which mainly arise from their porous nature and rich host-guest chemistry. However, other important features of MOFs that offer great potential rewards have been only barely explored. For instance, despite the fact that MOFs are suitable candidates to be used as chemical nanoreactors for the preparation, stabilization and characterization of unique functional species, that would be hardly accessible outside the functional constrained space offered by MOF channels, only very few examples have been reported so far. In particular, we outline in this feature recent advances in the use of highly robust and crystalline oxamato- and oxamidato-based MOFs as reactors for the in situ preparation of well-defined catalytically active single atom catalysts (SACS), subnanometer metal nanoclusters (SNMCs) and supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs). The robustness of selected MOFs permits the post-synthetic (PS) in situ preparation of the desired catalytically active metal species, which can be characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) taking advantage of its high crystallinity. The strategy highlighted here permits the always challenging large-scale preparation of stable and well-defined SACs, SNMCs and SCCs, exhibiting outstanding catalytic activities.

Encapsulating Metal Nanoparticles into a Layered Zeolite Precursor with Surface Silanol Nests Enhances Sintering Resistance

Supported metal nanoparticles are used as heterogeneous catalysts but often deactivated due to sintering at high temperatures. Confining metal species into a porous matrix reduces sintering, yet supports rarely provide additional stabilization. Here, we used the silanol-rich layered zeolite IPC-1P to stabilize ultra-small Rh nanoparticles. By adjusting the IPC-1P interlayer space through swelling, we prepared various architectures, including microporous and disordered mesoporous. In situ scanning transmission electron microscopy confirmed that Rh nanoparticles are resistant to sintering at high temperature (750 °C, 6 hrs). Rh clusters strongly bind to surface silanol quadruplets at IPC-1P layers by hydrogen transfer to clusters, while high silanol density hinders their migration based on density functional theory calculations. Ultimately, combining swelling with long-chain surfactant and utilizing metal-silanol interactions resulted in a novel, catalytically active material-Rh@IPC_C22.

Defined metal atom aggregates precisely incorporated into metal-organic frameworks

Nanosized metal aggregates (MAs), including metal nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoclusters (NCs), are often the active species in numerous applications. In order to maintain the active form of MAs in "use", they need to be anchored and stabilised, preventing agglomeration. In this context, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibit a unique combination of properties, are of particular interest as a tunable and porous matrix to host MAs. A high degree of control in the synthesis towards atom-efficient and application-oriented MA@MOF composites is required to derive specific structure-property relationships and in turn to enable design of functions on the molecular level. Due to the versatility of MA@MOF (derived) materials, their applications are not limited to the obvious field of catalysis, but increasingly include 'out of the box' applications, for example medical diagnostics and theranostics, as well as specialised (bio-)sensoring techniques. This review focuses on recent advances in the controlled synthesis of MA@MOF materials en route to atom-precise MAs. The main synthetic strategies, namely 'ship-in-bottle', 'bottle-around-ship', and approaches to achieve novel hierarchical MA@MOF structures are highlighted and discussed while identifying their potential as well as their limitations. Hereby, an overview of standard characterisation methods that enable a systematic analysis procedure and state-of-art techniques that localise MA within MOF cavities are provided. While the perspectives of MA@MOF materials in general have been reviewed various times in the recent past, few atom-precise MAs inside MOFs have been reported so far, opening opportunities for future investigation.

High Electrochemiluminescence from Ru(bpy)3 2+ Embedded Metal-Organic Frameworks to Visualize Single Molecule Movement at the Cellular Membrane

Direct imaging of single-molecule and its movement is of fundamental importance in biology, but challenging. Herein, aided by the nanoconfinement effect and resultant high reaction activity within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the designed Ru(bpy)₃ ²⁺ embedded MOF complex (RuMOFs) exhibits bright electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emission permitting high-quality imaging of ECL events at single molecule level. By labeling individual proteins of living cells with single RuMOFs, the distribution of membrane tyrosine-protein-kinase-like7 (PTK7) proteins at low-expressing cells is imaged via ECL. More importantly, the efficient capture of ECL photons generated inside the MOFs results in a stable ECL emission up to 1 h, allowing the in operando visualization of protein movements at the cellular membrane. As compared with the fluorescence observation, near-zero ECL background surrounding the target protein with the ECL emitter gives a better contrast for the dynamic imaging of discrete protein movement. This achievement of single molecule ECL dynamic imaging using RuMOFs will provide a more effective nanoemitter to observe the distribution and motion of individual proteins at living cells.

Bioinspired Pd-Cu Alloy Nanoparticles as Accept Agent for Dye Degradation Performances

Dye degradation is a key reaction in organic decomposition production through electron donor transferring. Palladium (Pd) is the best-known element for synthesis Pd-based catalyst, the surface status determines the scope of relative applications. Here we first prepare Pd-Cu alloy nanoparticles (NPs) by co-reduction of Cu(acac)₂ (acac = acetylacetonate) and Pd(C₅HF₆O₂)₂ in the presence of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) and glutathione (GSH). The obtained Pd-Cu is about ~10 nm with super-hydrophilicity in aqueous mediums. The structural analysis clearly demonstrated the uniform distribution of Pd and Cu element. The colloidal solution keeps stability even during 30 days. Bimetallic Pd-Cu NPs shows biocompatibility in form of cell lines (IMEF, HACAT, and 239 T) exposed to colloidal solution (50 µg mL^-1) for 2 days. It shows the catalytic multi-performance for dye degradation such as methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B (RhB), and methylene blue (MB), respectively. The as-synthesized nanoparticles showed one of the best multiple catalytic activities in the industrially important (electro)-catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to corresponding amines with noticeable reduced reaction time and increased rate constant without the use of any large area support. In addition, it exhibits peroxidase-like activity in the 3, 3', 5, 5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) color test and exhibit obvious difference with previous individual metal materials. By treated with high intensity focused ultrasound filed (HIFU), Pd-Cu NPs might be recrystallized and decreased the diameters than before. The enhancement in catalytic performance is observed obviously. This work expedites rational design and synthesis of the high-hierarchy alloy catalyst for biological and environment-friendly agents.

Metal-Organic Framework Accelerated One-Step Capture and Reduction of Palladium to Catalytically Active Nanoparticles

Recovery of noble metals and in situ transforming to functional materials hold great promise in the sustainability of natural resources but remain as a challenge. Herein, the variable chemical microenvironments created by the inorganic-organic hybrid composition of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were exploited to tune the metal-support interactions, thus establishing an integrated strategy for recovering and reducing palladium (Pd). Assisted by sonic waves and alcoholic solvent, selective capture of Pd(II) from a complicated matrix to directly afford Pd nanoparticles (NPs) in MOFs can be achieved in one step within several minutes. Mechanism investigation reveals that the Pd binding site and the energy barriers between ionic and metallic status are sensitive to chemical environments in different frameworks. Thanks to the clean, dispersive, and uniform nature of Pd NPs, Pd@MOFs synthesized from a complicated environment exhibited high catalytic activity toward 4-nitrophenol reduction and Suzuki coupling reactions.
