Layered Structure Causes Bulk NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide Unstable in Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Tailoring atomically local electric field of NiFe layered double hydroxides with Ag dopants to boost oxygen evolution kinetics

The demand for clean energy sources has driven focus towards advanced electrochemical systems. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) constrain the energy conversion efficiency of relevant devices. Herein, a one-step method is reported to grow oxygen vacancies (Vo) rich NiFeAg layered double hydroxides nanoclusters on carbon cloth (Vo-NiFeAg-LDH/CC) for serving as the self-supporting electrode to catalyze OER. The OER performance of Vo-NiFeAg-LDH/CC has been remarkably enhanced through Ag and Vo co-modification compared with pristine NiFe-LDH, achieving a low Tafel slope of 49.7 mV dec-1 in 1 m KOH solution. Additionally, the current density of Vo-NiFeAg-LDH/CC is 3.23 times higher than that of the state-of-art IrO2 at 2 V under an alkaline flow electrolyzer setup. Theoretical calculations and experimental results collectively demonstrate that Ag dopant and Vo strengthen the O* adsorption with active sites, further promoting the deprotonation step from OH* to O* and accelerating the catalytic reaction. In a word, this work clarifies the structural correlation and synergistic mechanism of Ag dopant and Vo, providing valuable insights for the rational design of catalyst for renewable energy applications.

Boron modification promoting electrochemical surface reconstruction of NiFe-LDH for efficient and stable freshwater/seawater oxidation catalysis

Transition metal-based electrocatalysts generally take place surface reconstruction in alkaline conditions, but little is known about how to improve the reconstruction to a highly active oxyhydroxide surface for an efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we develop a strategy to accelerate surface reconstruction by combining boron modification and cyclic voltammetry (CV) activation. Density functional theory calculations and in-situ/ex-situ characterizations indicate that both B-doping and electrochemical activation can reduce the energy barrier and contribute to the surface evolution into highly active oxyhydroxides. The formed oxyhydroxide active phase can tune the electronic configuration and boost the OER process. The reconstructed catalyst of CV-B-NiFe-LDH displays excellent alkaline OER performance in freshwater, simulated seawater, and natural seawater with low overpotentials at 100 mA cm-2 (η100: 219, 236, and 255 mV, respectively) and good durability. This catalyst also presents outstanding Cl- corrosion resistance in alkalized seawater electrolytes. The CV-B-NiFe-LDH||Pt/C electrolyzer reveals prominent performance for alkalized freshwater/seawater splitting. This study provides a guideline for developing advanced OER electrocatalysts by promoting surface reconstruction.

Co-doped NiFe carbonate hydroxide hydrate nanosheets with edge effect constructed from spent lithium-ion battery ternary cathodes for oxygen evolution reaction

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has received increasing attention for environment and resource reclamation. Converting LIBs wastes into high-efficiency catalysts is a win-win strategy for realizing resource reclamation and addressing sustainable energy challenges. Herein, we developed a simple method to upcycle spent-LIBs cathode powder into Co-doped NiFe carbonate hydroxide hydrate (Co/NFCH-FF) as a low-cost and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst. The optimized Co/NFCH-FF electrode appears very competitive OER performances with low overpotentials of 201 and 249 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, a small Tafel slope of 48.4 mV dec-1, and a high long-term stability. Moreover, we reveal that the existence of Co atoms leads to the formation of a crystalline/amorphous (c/a) interface at the Co/NFCH nanosheet edge, inducing the nanosheets possess a unique edge effect to enhance electric fields and accumulate hydroxide ions (OH-) at the edge during the OER process. Benefiting from edge effect, Co/NFCH-FF shows outstanding intrinsic activity. Furthermore, Co atoms as dopants stabilize the electronic structure of Co/NFCH-FF, enabling Co/NFCH-FF to exhibit excellent catalytic stability. This work provides an effective strategy for converting the end-life LIBs to high-performance multicomponent OER electrocatalysts and proposes new insights into the mechanism of enhanced catalytic activity of Co/NFCH.

Inhibiting Dissolution of Active Sites in 80 °C Alkaline Water Electrolysis by Oxyanion Engineering

Commercial alkaline water electrolysers typically operate at 80 °C to minimize energy consumption. However, NiFe-based catalysts, considered as one of the most promising candidates for anode, encounter the bottleneck of high solubility at such temperatures. Herein, we discover that the dissolution of NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) during operation not only leads to degradation of anode itself, but also deactivates cathode for water splitting, resulting in decay of overall electrocatalytic performance. Aiming to suppress the dissolution, we employed oxyanions as inhibitors in electrolyte. The added phosphates to the electrolyte inhibit the loss of NiFe-LDH active sites at 400 mA cm-2 to 1/3 of the original amount, thus reducing the rate of performance decay by 25-fold. Furthermore, the usage of borates, sulfates, and carbonates yields similar results, demonstrating the reliability and universality of the active site dissolution inhibitor, and its role in elevated water electrolysis.

Elevated Water Oxidation by Cation Leaching Enabled Tunable Surface Reconstruction

Water electrolysis is one promising and eco-friendly technique for energy storage, yet its overall efficiency is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, developing strategies to boost OER catalyst performance is crucial. With the advances in characterization techniques, an extensive phenomenon of surface structure evolution into an active amorphous layer was uncovered. Surface reconstruction in a controlled fashion was then proposed as an emerging strategy to elevate water oxidation efficiency. In this work, Cr substitution induces the reconstruction of NiFexCr2-xO4 during cyclic voltammetry (CV) conditioning by Cr leaching, which leads to a superior OER performance. The best-performed NiFe0.25Cr1.75O4 shows a ~1500 % current density promotion at overpotential η=300 mV, which outperforms many advanced NiFe-based OER catalysts. It is also found that their OER activities are mainly determined by Ni : Fe ratio rather than considering the contribution of Cr. Meanwhile, the turnover frequency (TOF) values based on redox peak and total mass were obtained and analysed, and their possible limitations in the case of NiFexCr2-xO4 are discussed. Additionally, the high activity and durability were further verified in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) cell, highlighting its potential for practical large-scale and sustainable hydrogen gas generation.

Silver Nanowires Cascaded Layered Double Hydroxides Nanocages with Enhanced Directional Electron Transport for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Designing and fabricating highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic materials for water splitting is a promising and practical approach to green and sustainable low-carbon energy systems. Herein, a facile in situ growth self-template strategy by using ZIF-67 as a consumable layered double hydroxides (LDHs) template and silver nanowires (AgNWs) as 1D conductive cascaded substrate to controllably synthesize the target AgNWs@CoFe-LDH composites with unique hollow shell sugar gourd-like structure and enhanced directional electron transport effect is reported. The AgNWs exhibit the key functions of the close connection of CoFe-LDH nanocages and the support of the directional electron transport effect in the composite catalyst inducing electrons directionally moving from CoFe-LDH to AgNWs. Meanwhile, the CoFe-LDH nanocages with ultrathin nanosheets and hollow structural properties show abundant active sites for electrocatalytic oxygen generation. The versatile AgNWs@CoFe-LDH catalyst with optimized components, enhanced directional electron transport, and synergistic effect achieves high OER performance with the overpotential of 207 mV and long-term 50 h stability at 10 mA cm-2 in an alkaline medium. Moreover, in-depth insights into the microstructure, structure-activity relationships, identification of key intermediate species, and a proton-coupled four-electron OER mechanism based on experimental discovery and theoretical calculation are also demonstrated.

Unlocking Efficiency: Minimizing Energy Loss in Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting

Catalysts play a crucial role in water electrolysis by reducing the energy barriers for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). Research aims to enhance the intrinsic activities of potential catalysts through material selection, microstructure design, and various engineering techniques. However, the energy consumption of catalysts has often been overlooked due to the intricate interplay among catalyst microstructure, dimensionality, catalyst-electrolyte-gas dynamics, surface chemistry, electron transport within electrodes, and electron transfer among electrode components. Efficient catalyst development for high-current-density applications is essential to meet the increasing demand for green hydrogen. This involves transforming catalysts with high intrinsic activities into electrodes capable of sustaining high current densities. This review focuses on current improvement strategies of mass exchange, charge transfer, and reducing electrode resistance to decrease energy consumption. It aims to bridge the gap between laboratory-developed, highly efficient catalysts and industrial applications regarding catalyst structural design, surface chemistry, and catalyst-electrode interplay, outlining the development roadmap of hierarchically structured electrode-based water electrolysis for minimizing energy loss in electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Enhanced stability of boron modified NiFe hydroxide for oxygen evolution reaction

The introduction of non-metal elements including boron has been identified as a significant means to enhance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in NiFe-based catalysts. To understand the catalytic activity and stability, recent attention has widened toward the Fe species as a potential contributor, prompting exploration from various perspectives. Here, boron incorporation in NiFe hydroxide achieves significantly enhanced activity and stability compared to the boron-free NiFe hydroxide. The boron inclusion in NiFe hydroxide is found to show exceptionally improved stability from 12 to 100 hours at a high current density (200 mA cm-2). It facilitates the production and redeposition of OER-active, high-valent Fe species in NiFe hydroxide based on the operando Raman, UV-vis, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis. It is proposed that preserving a homogenous distribution of Fe across the boron-containing catalyst surface enhances OER stability, unlike the bare NiFe hydroxide electrocatalyst, which exhibits uneven Fe dissolution, confirmed through elementary mapping analysis. These findings shed light on the potential of anionic regulation to augment the activity of iron, an aspect not previously explored in depth, and thus are expected to aid in designing practical OER electrocatalysts.

Amorphous P-CoOX Promotes the Formation of Hypervalent Ni Species in NiFe LDHs by Amorphous/Crystalline Interfaces for Excellent Catalytic Performance of Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Water electrolysis has become an attractive hydrogen production method. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a bottleneck of water splitting as its four-electron transfer procedure presents sluggish reaction kinetics. Designing composite catalysts with high performance for efficient OER still remains a huge challenge. Here, the P-doped cobalt oxide/NiFe layered double hydroxides (P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs) composite catalysts with amorphous/crystalline interfaces are successfully prepared for OER by hydrothermal-electrodeposition combined method. The results of electrochemical characterizations, operando Raman spectra, and DFT theoretical calculations have demonstrated the electrons in the P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs heterointerfaces are easily transferred from Ni2+ to Co3+ because that the amorphous configuration of P-CoOX can well induce Ni-O-Co orbital coupling. The electron transfer of Ni2+ to the surrounding Fe3+ and Co3+ will lead to the unoccupied eg orbitals of Ni3+ that can promote water dissociation and accelerate *OOH migration to improve OER catalytic performance. The optimized P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs exhibit superior catalytic performance for OER with a very low overpotential of 265 mV at 300 mA cm-2 and excellent long-term stability of 500 h with almost no attenuation at 100 mA cm-2. This work will provide a new method to design high-performance NiFe LDHs-based catalysts for OER.

Combustion Growth of NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide for Efficient and Durable Oxygen Evolution Reaction

NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) with abundant heterostructures represents a state-of-the-art electrocatalyst for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, NiFe LDH/Fe2O3 nanosheet arrays have been fabricated by facile combustion of corrosion-engineered NiFe foam (NFF). The in situ grown, self-supported electrocatalyst exhibited a low overpotential of 248 mV for the OER at 50 mA cm-2, a small Tafel slope of 31 mV dec-1, and excellent durability over 100 h under the industrial benchmarking 500 mA cm-2 current density. A balanced Ni and Fe composition under optimal corrosion and combustion contributed to the desirable electrochemical properties. Comprehensive ex-situ analyses and operando characterizations including Fourier-transformed alternating current voltammetry (FTACV) and in situ Raman demonstrate the beneficial role of modulated interfacial electron transfer, dynamic atomic structural transformation to NiOOH, and the high-valence active metal sites. This study provides a low-cost and easy-to-expand way to synthesize efficient and durable electrocatalysts.

State of Play of Critical Mineral-Based Catalysts for Electrochemical E-Refinery to Synthetic Fuels

The pursuit of decarbonization involves leveraging waste CO2 for the production of valuable fuels and chemicals (e.g., ethanol, ethylene, and urea) through the electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). The efficacy of this process heavily depends on electrocatalyst performance, which is generally reliant on high loading of critical minerals. However, the supply of these minerals is susceptible to shortage and disruption, prompting concerns regarding their usage, particularly in electrocatalysis, requiring swift innovations to mitigate the supply risks. The reliance on critical minerals in catalyst fabrication can be reduced by implementing design strategies that improve the available active sites, thereby increasing the mass activity. This review seeks to discuss and analyze potential strategies, challenges, and opportunities for improving catalyst activity in CO2RR with a special attention to addressing the risks associated with critical mineral scarcity. By shedding light onto these aspects of critical mineral-based catalyst systems, this review aims to inspire the development of high-performance catalysts and facilitates the practical application of CO2RR technology, whilst mitigating adverse economic, environmental, and community impacts.

The mechanism of water oxidation using transition metal-based heterogeneous electrocatalysts

The water oxidation reaction, a crucial process for solar energy conversion, has garnered significant research attention. Achieving efficient energy conversion requires the development of cost-effective and durable water oxidation catalysts. To design effective catalysts, it is essential to have a fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms. This review presents a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the understanding of the mechanisms of water oxidation using transition metal-based heterogeneous electrocatalysts, including Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu-based catalysts. It highlights the catalytic mechanisms of different transition metals and emphasizes the importance of monitoring of key intermediates to explore the reaction pathway. In addition, advanced techniques for physical characterization of water oxidation intermediates are also introduced, for the purpose of providing information for establishing reliable methodologies in water oxidation research. The study of transition metal-based water oxidation electrocatalysts is instrumental in providing novel insights into understanding both natural and artificial energy conversion processes.

Spontaneous Formation of Ultrasmall Noble Metal Nanoparticles on Cobalt-Based Layered Double Hydroxide for Electrochemical and Environmental Catalysis

Supported noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) are appealing for energy and environment catalysis. To facilitate the loading of NMNPs, in situ reduction of Mn+ on the support with extra reductants/surfactants is adopted, but typically results in aggregated NMNPs with uneven size distributions or blocked active sites of the NMNPs. Herein, the use of cobalt layered double hydroxide (Co-LDH) is proposed as both support and reductant for the preparation of supported NMNPs with ultrasmall sizes and even distributions. The resultant Co-LDH-supported NMNPs exhibit excellent catalytic performance and stability. For example, Ir/Co-LDH displays a low overpotential of 188 mV (10 mA cm-2) for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction and a long-term stability over 100 h (100 mA cm-2) in overall water splitting. Ru/Co-LDH can achieve a 4-nitrophenol reduction with high rate of 0.36 min-1 and S2- detection with low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 µm. Overall, this work provides a green and effective strategy to fabricate supported NMNPs with greatly improved catalytic performances.

Stability of Ni-Fe-Layered Double Hydroxide Under Long-Term Operation in AEM Water Electrolysis

Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is an attractive method for green hydrogen production. It allows the use of non-platinum group metal catalysts and can achieve performance comparable to proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers due to recent technological advances. While current systems already show high performances with available materials, research gaps remain in understanding electrode durability and degradation behavior. In this study, the performance and degradation tracking of a Ni3Fe-LDH-based single-cell is implemented and investigated through the correlation of electrochemical data using chemical and physical characterization methods. A performance stability of 1000 h, with a degradation rate of 84 µV h-1 at 1 A cm-2 is achieved, presenting the Ni3Fe-LDH-based cell as a stable and cost-attractive AEMWE system. The results show that the conductivity of the formed Ni-Fe-phase is one key to obtaining high electrolyzer performance and that, despite Fe leaching, change in anion-conducting binder compound, and morphological changes inside the catalyst bulk, the Ni3Fe-LDH-based single-cells demonstrate high performance and durability. The work reveals the importance of longer stability tests and presents a holistic approach of electrochemical tracking and post-mortem analysis that offers a guideline for investigating electrode degradation behavior over extended measurement periods.

Reinforcement of Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Activity Enabled by Constructing Silver-Incorporated NiCo-PBA@NiFe-LDH Hierarchical Nanoboxes

Complicated oxygen evolution reaction (OER) poses the bottleneck in improving the efficiency of hydrogen production through water electrolysis. Herein, an integrated strategy to modulate the electronic structure of NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) is reported by constructing Ag-incorporated NiCo-PBA@NiFe-LDH heterojunction with a hierarchical hollow structure. This "double heterojunction" facilitates local charge polarization at the interface, thereby promoting electron transfer and reducing the adsorption energy of intermediates, ultimately enhancing the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. It is noteworthy that an exchange bias field is observed between NiCo-PBA and NiFe-LDH, which will be conducive to regulating the electron spin states of metals and facilitating the production of triplet oxygen. Additionally, the unique hierarchical nanoboxes provide a large specific surface area that ensures adequate exposure to adsorption sites and active sites. Profiting from the synergistic advantages, the overpotential is as low as 190 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, with a low Tafel slope of 21 mV dec-1. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculation further substantiated that the incorporation of Ag in the heterojunction can effectively reduce the adsorption energy of reactant intermediates and enhance the conductivity.

Promoting Water Oxidation by Proton Acceptable Groups Surrounding Catalyst on Electrode Surface

Large-scale hydrogen production through water splitting represents an optimal approach for storing sustainable but intermittent energy sources. However, water oxidation, a complex and sluggish reaction, poses a significant bottleneck for water splitting efficiency. The impact of outer chemical environments on the reaction kinetics of water oxidation catalytic centers remains unexplored. Herein, chemical environment impacts were integrated by featuring methylpyridinium cation group (Py+) around the classic Ru(bpy)(tpy) (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, tpy=2,2' : 6',2''-terpyridine) water oxidation catalyst on the electrode surface via electrochemical co-polymerization. The presence of Py+ groups could significantly enhance the turnover frequencies of Ru(bpy)(tpy), surpassing the performance of typical proton acceptors such as pyridine and benzoic acid anchored around the catalyst. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the flexible internal proton acceptor anions induced by Py+ around Ru(bpy)(tpy) are more effective than conventionally anchored proton acceptors, which promoted the rate-determining proton transfer process and enhanced the rate of water nucleophilic attack during O-O bond formation. This study may provide a novel perspective on achieving efficient water oxidation systems by integrating cations into the outer chemical environments of catalytic centers.

Oxalate anions-intercalated NiFe layered double hydroxide as a highly active and stable electrocatalyst for alkaline seawater oxidation

Seawater electrolysis is gaining recognition as a promising method for hydrogen production. However, severe anode corrosion caused by the high concentration of chloride ions (Cl-) poses a challenge for the long-term oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, an anti-corrosion strategy of oxalate anions intercalation in NiFe layered double hydroxide on nickel foam (NiFe-C2O42- LDH/NF) is proposed. The intercalation of these highly negatively charged C2O42- serves to establish electrostatic repulsion and impede Cl- adsorption. In alkaline seawater, NiFe-C2O42- LDH/NF requires an overpotential of 337 mV to gain the large current density of 1000 mA cm-2 and operates continuously for 500 h. The intercalation of C2O42- is demonstrated to significantly boost the activity and stability of NiFe LDH-based materials during alkaline seawater oxidation.

Stainless Steel Activation for Efficient Alkaline Oxygen Evolution in Advanced Electrolyzers

Designing robust and cost-effective electrocatalysts for efficient alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance in the field of water electrolysis. In this study, an electrochemical strategy to activate stainless steel (SS) electrodes for efficient OER is introduced. By cycling the SS electrode within a potential window that encompasses the Fe(II)↔Fe(III) process, its OER activity can be enhanced to a great extent compared to using a potential window that excludes this redox reaction, decreasing the overpotential at current density of 100 mA cm-2 by 40 mV. Electrochemical characterization, Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectroscopy, and operando Raman measurements demonstrate that the Fe leaching at the SS surface can be accelerated through a Fe → γ-Fe2O3 → Fe3O4 or FeO → Fe2+ (aq.) conversion process, leading to the sustained exposure of Cr and Ni species. While Cr leaching occurs during its oxidation process, Ni species display higher resistance to leaching and gradually accumulate on the SS surface in the form of OER-active Fe-incorporated NiOOH species. Furthermore, a potential-pulse strategy is also introduced to regenerate the OER-activity of 316-type SS for stable OER, both in the three-electrode configuration (without performance decay after 300 h at 350 mA cm-2) and in an alkaline water electrolyzer (≈30 mV cell voltage increase after accelerated stress test-AST). The AST-stabilized cell can still reach 1000 and 4000 mA cm-2 at cell voltages of 1.69 and 2.1 V, which makes it competitive with state-of-the-art electrolyzers based on ion-exchange membrane using Ir-based anodes.

Facile and Green Synthesis of Well-Defined Nanocrystal Oxygen Evolution Catalysts by Rational Crystallization Regulation

The development of catalysts for an economical and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for clean and sustainable energy storage and conversion. Nickel-iron-based (NiFe) nanostructures are widely investigated as active OER catalysts and especially shape-controlled nanocrystals exhibit optimized surface structure and electronic properties. However, the structural control from amorphous to well-defined crystals is usually time-consuming and requires multiple stages. Here, a universal two-step precipitation-hydrothermal approach is reported to prepare a series of NiFe-based nanocrystals (e.g., hydroxides, sulfides, and molybdates) from amorphous precipitates. Their morphology and evolution of atomic and electronic structure during this process are studied using conclusive microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. The short-term, additive-free, and low-cost method allows for the control of the crystallinity of the materials and facilitates the generation of nanosheets, nanorods, or nano-octahedra with excellent water oxidation activity. The NiFe-based crystalline catalysts exhibit slightly compromised initial activity but more robust long-term stability than their amorphous counterparts during electrochemical operation. This facile, reliable, and universal synthesis method is promising in strategies for fabricating NiFe-based nanostructures as efficient and economically valuable OER electrocatalysts.

FeNi (oxy)hydroxides embedded with high-valence Mo atoms: A efficient and robust water oxidation electrocatalyst

The incorporation of high-valence transition metal atoms into FeNi (oxy)hydroxides may be a promising strategy to regulate the intrinsic electronic states, thereby reducing the thermodynamic barrier and accelerating oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, a high-valence Mo atoms doping route is proposed by an efficient self-reconstruction strategy to prepare MoFeNi (oxy)hydroxides for efficient alkaline OER. By using borides (MoNiB) as sacrificial template and Mo source, FeNi (oxy)hydroxides nanoflakes embedded with high-valence Mo atoms (MoFeNi) is successfully synthesized, which can modulate the electron coordination to improve the intrinsic catalytic activity. Remarkably, the obtained MoFeNi exhibits extremely low overpotential (η100 = 252 mV and η500 = 288 mV) and small Tafel slope (18.35 mV dec-1). The robust catalyst can run stably for hours at 500 mA cm-2. Characterization results and theoretical calculations confirmed that the addition of high-valence Mo effectively modulated the intrinsic electronic structure of metal sites and optimized the adsorption/desorption energy of the intermediates, accelerating OER reactions kinetics. By coupling MoFeNi anode with Pt/C cathode, anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser can operate stably at 500 mA cm-2 with about less than 2.2 V. This research introduces a novel approach to develop ideal electrocatalysts through the incorporation of high-valence molybdenum species.

Innovative dual-active sites in interfacially engineered interfaces for high-performance S-scheme solar-driven CO2 photoreduction

The realization of 2D/2D Van der Waals (VDW) heterojunctions represents an advanced approach to achieving superior photocatalytic efficiency. However, electron transfer through Van der Waals heterojunctions formed via ex-situ assembly encounters significant challenges at the interface due to contrasting morphologies and potential barriers among the nanocomposite substituents. Herein, a novel approach is presented, involving the insertion of a phosphate group between copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and B-doped and N-deficient g-C3N4 (BDCNN), to design and construct a Van der Waals heterojunction labeled as xCu[acs]/yP-BDCNN. The introduction of phosphate as a charge modulator and efficient conduit for charge transfer within the heterojunction resulted in the elimination of spatial barriers and induced electron movement from BDCNN to CuPc in the excited states. Consequently, the catalytic central Cu2+ in CuPc captured the photoelectrons, leading to the conversion of CO2 to C2H4, CO and CH4. Remarkably, this approach resulted in a 78-fold enhancement in photocatalytic efficiency compared to pure BDCNN. Moreover the findings confirm that the 2D-2D 4Cu[acs]/9P-BDCNN sheet-like heterojunction effectively boosts photocatalytic activity for persistent pollutants such as methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), and tetracycline antibiotics (TCs). The introduction of "interfacial interacting" substances to establish an electron transfer pathway presents a novel and effective strategy for designing photocatalysts capable of efficiently reducing CO2 into valuable products.

Li+ Cations Activate NiFeOOH for Oxygen Evolution in Sodium and Potassium Hydroxide

The efficiency of electrolysis is reduced due to the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Besides catalyst properties, electrocatalytic activity also depends on the interaction of the electrocatalyst with the electrolyte. Here, we show that the addition of small amounts of Li+ to Fe-free NaOH or KOH electrolytes activates NiFeOOH for the OER compared to single-cation electrolytes. Moreover, the activation was maintained when the solution was returned to pure NaOH. Importantly, we show that the origin of activation by Li+ cations is primarily non-kinetic in nature, as the OER onset for the mixed electrolyte does not change and the Tafel slope at low current density is ~30 mV/dec in both electrolytes. However, the increase of the apparent Tafel slope remains lower at increasing current densities in the presence of Li+. Based on electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements, we show that this reduction of non-kinetic effects is due to enhanced intercalation of sodium, water and hydroxide. This enhanced electrolyte penetration facilitates the OER, especially at higher current densities and for increased catalyst loading. Our work shows that mixed electrolytes where distinct cations can have different roles provide a simple and promising strategy towards improved OER rates.

Engineering MPC-Assisted Heterojunctional Photo-Oxidation Tailored by Interfacial Design of a P-Modulated C3N4 Heterojunction for Improved Aerobic Alcohol Oxidation

The creation of two-dimensional van der Waals (VDW) heterostructures is a sophisticated approach to enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. However, challenges in electron transfer at the interfaces often arise in these heterostructures due to the varied structures and energy barriers of the components involved. This study presents a novel method for constructing a VDW heterostructure by inserting a phosphate group between copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and boron-doped, nitrogen-deficient graphitic carbon nitride (BCN), referred to as Cu/PO4-BCN. This phosphate group serves as a charge mediator, enabling effective charge transfer within the heterostructure, thus facilitating electron flow from BCN to CuPc upon activation. As a result, the photogenerated electrons are effectively utilized by the catalytic Cu2+ core in CuPc, achieving a conversion efficiency of 96% for benzyl alcohol (BA) and a selectivity of 98.8% for benzyl aldehyde (BAD) in the presence of oxygen as the sole oxidant and under illumination. Notably, the production rate of BAD is almost 8 times higher than that observed with BCN alone and remains stable over five cycles. The introduction of interfacial mediators to enhance electron transfer represents a pioneering and efficient strategy in the design of photocatalysts, enabling the proficient transformation of BA into valuable derivatives.

Optimizing Edge Active Sites via Intrinsic In-Plane Iridium Deficiency in Layered Iridium Oxides for Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Improving catalytic activity of surface iridium sites without compromising catalytic stability is the core task of designing more efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid. This work presents phase transition of a bulk layered iridate Na2IrO3 in acid solution at room temperature, and subsequent exfoliation to produce 2D iridium oxide nanosheets with around 4 nm thickness. The nanosheets consist of OH-terminated, honeycomb-type layers of edge-sharing IrO6 octahedral framework with intrinsic in-plane iridium deficiency. The nanosheet material is among the most active Ir-based catalysts reported for acidic OER and gives an iridium mass activity improvement up to a factor of 16.5 over rutile IrO2 nanoparticles. The material also exhibits good catalytic and structural stability and retains the catalytic activity for more than 1300 h. The combined experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that edge Ir sites of the layer are active centers for OER, with structural hydroxyl groups participating in the catalytic cycle of OER via a non-traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism. The existence of intrinsic in-plane iridium deficiency is the key to building a unique local environment of edge active sites that have optimal surface oxygen adsorption properties and thereby high catalytic activity.

A karst-inspired hierarchical Mg/Al layered double hydroxide with a high entropy-driven process for interception and storage

Karstification plays a crucial role in forming magnificent scenery, and storing oil, natural gas, mineral resources, and water. Through the inspiration of karstification, a hierarchical layered double hydroxide (LDH) with funnel-like and cave-like structures (called Karst-LDH) is formed by the dissolution of acrylic acid/water solution. Meanwhile, the results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that Karst-LDH has complicated and interconnected internal pipe networks. The actual maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of Karst-LDH reaches 126.38 mg g-1 due to the unique structures, protonation, ligand exchange, ion exchange, and hydrogen bonding, which is over ten times that of general LDH with a regular hexagonal structure. The results of isotherms and thermodynamics also indicate that Karst-LDH conforms to more heterogeneous and multilayer adsorption with a higher entropy-driven process. Karst-LDH exhibits good selectivity for chloride and nitrate ions. The change in the frontier orbital interaction between phosphate and different LDHs is a significant reason for quick macropore transmission, mesopore interception, and finally, phosphate storage in Karst-LDH. This work provides an efficient way for the design and fabrication of high adsorption performance materials with unique karst-type structures, which can be used for multiple fields potentially.

Amorphous Ni-Fe-Mo Oxides Coupled with Crystalline Metallic Domains for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution by Promoted Lattice-Oxygen Participation

The crystalline/amorphous heterophase nanostructures are promising functional materials for biomedicals, catalysis, energy conversion, and storage. Despite great progress is achieved, facile synthesis of crystalline metal/amorphous multinary metal oxides nanohybrids remains challenging, and their electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance along with the catalytic mechanism are not systematically investigated. Herein, two kinds of ultrafine crystalline metal domains coupled with amorphous Ni-Fe-Mo oxides heterophase nanohybrids, including Ni/Ni0.5-a Fe0.5 Mo1.5 Ox and Ni-FeNi3 /Ni0.5-b Fe0.5-y Mo1.5 Ox , are fabricated through controllable reduction of amorphous Ni0.5 Fe0.5 Mo1.5 Ox precursors by simply tuning the amount of used reductant. Due to the suited component in metal domains, the special structure with dense crystalline/amorphous interfaces, and strong electronic coupling of their components, the resultant Ni-FeNi3 /Ni0.5-b Fe0.5-y Mo1.5 Ox nanohybrids show greatly enhanced OER activity with a low overpotential (278 mV) to reach 10 mA cm-2 current density and ultrahigh turnover frequency (38160 h-1 ), outperforming Ni/Ni0.5-a Fe0.5 Mo1.5 Ox , Ni0.5 Fe0.5 Mo1.5 Ox precursors, commercial IrO2 , and most of recently reported OER catalysts. Also, such Ni-FeNi3 /Ni0.5-b Fe0.5-y Mo1.5 Ox nanohybrids manifest good catalytic stability. As revealed by a series of spectroscopy and electrochemical analyses, their OER mechanism follows the lattice-oxygen-mediated (LOM) pathway. This work may shed light on the design of advanced heterophase nanohybrids, and promote their applications in water splitting, metal-air batteries, or other clean energy fields.

Anti-osteosarcoma trimodal synergistic therapy using NiFe-LDH and MXene nanocomposite for enhanced biocompatibility and efficacy

Osteosarcoma is usually resistant to immunotherapy and, thus primarily relies on surgical resection and high-dosage chemotherapy. Unfortunately, less invasive or toxic therapies such as photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) generally failed to show satisfactory outcomes. Adequate multimodal therapies with proper safety profiles may provide better solutions for osteosarcoma. Herein, a simple nanocomposite that synergistically combines CDT, PTT, and chemotherapy for osteosarcoma treatment was fabricated. In this composite, small 2D NiFe-LDH flakes were processed into 3D hollow nanospheres via template methods to encapsulate 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) with high loading capacity. The nanospheres were then adsorbed onto larger 2D Ti3C2 MXene monolayers and finally shielded by bovine serum albumin (BSA) to form 5-FU@NiFe-LDH/Ti3C2/BSA nanoplatforms (5NiTiB). Both in vitro and in vivo data demonstrated that the 5-FU induced chemotherapy, NiFe-LDH driven chemodynamic effects, and MXene-based photothermal killing collectively exhibited a synergistic "all-in-one" anti-tumor effect. 5NiTiB improved tumor suppression rate from <5% by 5-FU alone to ∼80.1%. This nanotherapeutic platform achieved higher therapeutic efficacy with a lower agent dose, thereby minimizing side effects. Moreover, the composite is simple to produce, enabling the fine-tuning of dosages to suit different requirements. Thus, the platform is versatile and efficient, with potential for further development.

MXene-mediated reconfiguration induces robust nickel-iron catalysts for industrial-grade water oxidation

Nickel-iron oxy/hydroxides (NiFeOxHy) emerge as an attractive type of electrocatalysts for alkaline water oxidation reaction (WOR), but which encounter a huge challenge in stability, especially at industrial-grade large current density due to uncontrollable Fe leakage. Here, we tailor the Fe coordination by a MXene-mediated reconfiguration strategy for the resultant NiFeOxHy catalyst to alleviate Fe leakage and thus reinforce the WOR stability. The introduction of ultrafine MXene with surface dangling bonds in the electrochemical reconfiguration over Ni-Fe Prussian blue analogue induces the covalent hybridization of NiFeOxHy/MXene, which not only accelerates WOR kinetics but also improves Fe oxidation resistance against segregation. As a result, the NiFeOxHy coupled with MXene exhibits an extraordinary durability at ampere-level current density over 1,000 h for alkaline WOR with an ultralow overpotential of only 307 mV. This work provides a broad avenue and mechanistic insights for the development of nickel-iron catalysts toward industrial applications.

Achieving High-Performance Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation on Ni(OH)2 with Optimized Intermediate Binding Energy Enabled by S-Doping and CeO2 -Interfacing

The adsorption energy of the reaction intermediates has a crucial influence on the electrocatalytic activity. Ni-based materials possess high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline, however too strong binding of *OH and high energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) severely limit their OER activity. Herein, a facile strategy is shown to fabricate novel vertical nanorod-like arrays hybrid structure with the interface contact of S-doped Ni(OH)2 and CeO2 in situ grown on Ni foam (S-Ni(OH)2 /CeO2 /NF) through a one-pot route. The alcohol molecules oxidation reaction experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrate that S-doping and CeO2 -interfacing significantly modulate the binding energies of OER intermediates toward optimal value and reduce the energy barrier of the RDS, contributing to remarkable OER activity for S-Ni(OH)2 /CeO2 /NF with an ultralow overpotential of 196 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and long-term durability over 150 h for the OER. This work offers an efficient doping and interfacing strategy to tune the binding energy of the OER intermediates for obtaining high-performance electrocatalysts.

Layered Quasi-Nevskite Metastable-Phase Cobalt Oxide Accelerates Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Reaction Kinetics

Clarifying the structure-reactivity relationship of non-noble-metal electrocatalysts is one of the decisive factors for the practical application of water electrolysis. In this field, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a sluggish kinetic process has become a huge challenge for large-scale production of high-purity hydrogen. Here we synthesize a layered quasi-nevskite metastable-phase cobalt oxide (LQNMP-Co2O3) nanosheet via a simple molten alkali synthesis strategy. The unit-cell parameters of LQNMP-Co2O3 are determined to be a = b = 2.81 Å and c = 6.89 Å with a space group of P3̅m1 (No. 164). The electrochemical results show that the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst enables delivering an ultralow overpotential of 266 mV at a current density of 10 mA cmgeo-2 with excellent durability. The operando XANES and EXAFS analyses clearly reveal the origin of the OER activity and the electrochemical stability of the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) (from *O to *OOH) is significantly reduced on the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst by comparing with simulated monolayered CoO2 (M-CoO2).

Microzone-Acidification-Driven Degradation Mechanism of the NiFe-Based Anode in Seawater Electrolysis

The anode stability is critical for efficient and reliable seawater electrolyzers. Herein, a NiFe-based film catalyst was prepared by anodic oxidation to serve as a model electrode, which exhibited a satisfactory oxygen evolution performance in simulated alkaline seawater (1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl) with an overpotential of 348 mV at 100 mA cm-2 and a long-term stability of over 100 h. After that, the effects of the current density and bulk pH of the electrolyte on its stability were evaluated. It was found that the electrode stability was sensitive to electrolysis conditions, failing at 20 mA cm-2 in 0.1 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl but over 500 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl. The electrode dissolved, and some precipitates immediately formed at the region very close to the electrode surface during the electrolysis. This can be ascribed to the pH difference between the electrode/electrolyte interface and the bulk electrolyte under anodic polarization. In other words, the microzone acidification accelerates the corrosion of the electrode by Cl-, thus affecting the electrode stability. The operational performances of the electrode under different electrolysis conditions were classified to further analyze the degradation behavior, which resulted in three regions corresponding to the stable oxygen evolution, violent dissolution-precipitation, and complete passivation processes, respectively. Thereby increasing the bulk pH could alleviate the microzone acidification and improve the stability of the anode at high current densities. Overall, this study provides new insights into understanding the degradation mechanism of NiFe-based catalysts and offers electrolyte engineering strategies for the application of anodes.

Synthesis of NiFe-layered double hydroxides using triethanolamine-complexed precursors as oxygen evolution reaction catalysts: effects of Fe valence

The synthesis of highly efficient NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) to catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgent and challenging. Herein, NiFe-FeCl3-x and NiFe-FeCl2-x samples (where FeCl3 and FeCl2 represent the Fe sources and x represents the imposed reaction time: 6, 12, and 24 h) were prepared via one-pot hydrothermal synthesis using Fe sources characterized by Fe(III) or Fe(II) valence states. In the presence of triethanolamine, when FeCl3 was used as the Fe source, pure NiFe-LDH was obtained, whose crystallinity increased with increasing hydrothermal treatment time. In contrast, when FeCl2 was used as the Fe source, a mixture of NiFe-LDH, Fe2O3, and trace amounts of Fe3O4 was obtained. The content of NiFe-LDH in the mixture increased under longer hydrothermal treatment and NiFe-FeCl3-x catalysts exhibited better OER performance than NiFe-FeCl2-x catalysts. Specifically, NiFe-FeCl3-6 afforded the highest OER performance with an overpotential of 246.8 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 46.1 mV dec-1. Herein, we investigated the effects of the valence state of Fe precursors on the structures and OER activities of the prepared catalysts; the mechanism of NiFe-LDH formation via hydrothermal synthesis in the presence of triethanolamine was also proposed.

In-situ fabrication of Cr doped FeNi LDH on commercial stainless steel for oxygen evolution reaction

Commercial stainless steel has attracted increasing interest due to their rich content in transition metal elements and corrosion resistance properties. In this work, we design a facile and rapid route to in-situ fabricate the Cr doped FeNi layered double hydroxides nanosheets (LDHs) on modified stainless steel (Cr-FeNi LDH @ ESS) under ambient condition.The ultra small scaled 2D structure only around 20 nm diameter and metal ions with multivalent oxidation state were observed on the in situ fabricated LDHs, which provides high active area and active sites and thus promote excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Cr-FeNi LDH @ESS electrocatalysts exhibit an over potential of 280 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and achieves a Tafel slope of 44 mV dec-1 for OER in the 1.0 M KOH aqueous solution. We anticipate that the operating strategy of our system may promote the development of commercial non-precious productions as the efficient electrocatalysts for energy storage and conversion.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Based Nanoarrays for Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

The development of highly active and stable electrode materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for the widespread application of electrochemical energy conversion systems. In recent years, various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with self-supporting array structures have been extensively studied because of their high porosity, abundant metal sites, and flexible and adjustable structures. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in the design, preparation, and applications of MOF-based nanoarrays for the OER, beginning with the introduction of the architectural advantages of the nanoarrays and the characteristics of MOFs. Subsequently, the design principles of robust and efficient MOF-based nanoarrays as OER electrodes are highlighted. Furthermore, detailed discussions focus on the composition, structure, and performance of pristine MOF nanoarrays (MOFNAs) and MOF-based composite nanoarrays. On the one hand, the effects of the two components of MOFs and several modification methods are discussed in detail for MOFNAs. On the other hand, the review emphasizes the use of MOF-based composite nanoarrays composed of MOFs and other nanomaterials, such as oxides, hydroxides, oxyhydroxides, chalcogenides, MOFs, and metal nanoparticles, to guide the rational design of efficient OER electrodes. Finally, perspectives on current challenges, opportunities, and future directions in this research field are provided.

Self-Supported Spray-Coated NiFe-LDH Catalyst on a Stainless Steel Substrate for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

In the quest for more efficient and cost-effective electrocatalytic systems, careful selection of catalysts and substrates plays a pivotal role. This study introduces an approach by synthesizing and depositing NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) catalysts on commercial AISI 304 substrates by using a low-temperature spray-coating technique. Through systematic investigations, the influence of processing conditions, such as the synthesis, ultrasonic power for having a stable nanoparticle's dispersion, and spray cycle optimization on the electrochemical and morphological properties of the coatings, is thoroughly explored. The results showcase exceptional catalytic performance, achieving an overpotential of 230 mV at 10 mA/cm2, with enhanced stability even at high current densities of 500 mA/cm2. The study highlights the significance of meticulous processing optimization and presents a scalable methodology that holds great potential for developing catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) and facilitates their integration into industrial processes.

Accelerating structure reconstruction to form NiOOH in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for boosting the oxygen evolution reaction

Structural reconstruction of electrocatalysts to generate metal hydroxide/oxyhydroxide species is critical for an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the controllable regulation of the reconstruction process still remains a challenge. Given the designable nature of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), herein, we have reported a localized structure disordering strategy to accelerate the structural reconstruction of Ni-BDC to generate NiOOH for boosting the OER. The Ni-BDC nanosheets were modified by Fe3+ and urea to form cracks, which could promote the accessibility of the Ni sites by the electrolyte and thus promote the reconstruction to form NiOOH. In addition, the interaction between Ni2+ and Fe3+ allows the electron flow from Ni2+ to Fe3+, further enhancing the NiOOH generation. As a result, the optimized sample exhibits excellent OER activity with a small overpotential of 251 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is superior to most of the MOF-based OER catalysts reported previously. This work provides a controllable strategy to regulate the structural reconstruction for promoting the OER, which could provide important guidance for the development of more efficient OER electrocatalysts.

Efficient Solar-Driven Water Splitting Enabled by Perovskite Photovoltaics and a Halogen-Modulated Metal-Organic Framework Electrocatalyst

Solar-driven water splitting powered by photovoltaics enables efficient storage of solar energy in the form of hydrogen fuel. In this work, we demonstrate efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion using perovskite (PVK) tandem photovoltaics and a halogen-modulated metal-organic framework (MOF) electrocatalyst. By substituting tetrafluoroterephthalate (TFBDC) for terephthalic (BDC) ligands in a nickel-based MOF, we achieve a 152 mV improvement in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential at 10 mA·cm2. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray adsorption structure (XAS) analysis, theoretical simulation, and electrochemical results, we demonstrated that the introduction of fluorine atoms enhanced the intrinsic activity of Ni sites as well as the transfer property and accessibility of the MOF. Using this electrocatalyst in a bias-free photovoltaic electrochemical (PV-EC) system with a PVK/organic tandem solar cell, we achieve 6.75% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (ηSTH). We also paired the electrocatalyst with a PVK photovoltaic module to drive water splitting at 206.7 mA with ηSTH of 10.17%.

High-Performance Alkaline Seawater Electrolysis with Anomalous Chloride Promoted Oxygen Evolution Reaction

A highly selective and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is the bottleneck for direct seawater splitting because of side reactions primarily caused by chloride ions (Cl- ). Most studies about OER catalysts in seawater focus on the repulsion of the Cl- to reduce its negative effects. Herein, we demonstrate that the absorption of Cl- on the specific site of a popular OER electrocatalyst, nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH), does not have a significant negative impact; rather, it is beneficial for its activity and stability enhancement in natural seawater. A set of in situ characterization techniques reveals that the adsorption of Cl- on the desired Fe site suppresses Fe leaching, and creates more OER-active Ni sites, improving the catalyst's long-term stability and activity simultaneously. Therefore, we achieve direct alkaline seawater electrolysis for the very first time on a commercial-scale alkaline electrolyser (AE, 120 cm2 electrode area) using the NiFe LDH anode. The new alkaline seawater electrolyser exhibits a reduction in electricity consumption by 20.7 % compared to the alkaline purified water-based AE using commercial Ni catalyst, achieving excellent durability for 100 h at 200 mA cm-2 .

La and S Co-Doping Induced the Synergism of Multiphase Nickel-Iron Nanosheets with Rich Oxygen Vacancies to Trigger Large-Current-Density Oxygen Evolution and Urea Oxidation Reactions

The development of cost-effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is of great significance for hydrogen production. Herein, La and S co-doped multiphase electrocatalyst (LSFN-63) is fabricated by metal-corrosion process. FeOOH can reduce the formation energy of NiOOH, and enhance the stability of NiOOH as active sites for OER/UOR. The rich oxygen vacancies can increase the number of active sites, optimize the adsorption of intermediates, and improve electrical conductivity. Beyond, La and S co-doping can also regulate the electronic structure of FeOOH. As a result, LSFN-63 presents a low overpotential of 210/450 mV at 100/1000 mA cm-2 , small Tafel slope (32 mV dec-1 ), and outstanding stability under 1000 mA cm-2 @60 h, and can also display excellent OER activity with 180 mV at 250 mA cm-2 and long-term catalytic durability at 250 mA cm-2 @135 h in 30 wt% KOH under 60 °C. Moreover, LSFN-63 demonstrates remarkable UOR performance in 1 m KOH + 0.5 m urea, which just requires an ultra-small overpotential of 140 mV at 100 mA cm-2 , and maintain long-term durability over 120 h. This work opens up a promising avenue for the development of high-efficiency electrocatalysts by a facile metal-corrosion strategy.

Nitrogen Plasma Activates CoMn-Layered Double Hydroxides for Superior Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution

Bimetallic layered double hydroxide is considered an ideal electrocatalytic material. However, due to the poor electrical conductivity of the bimetallic layered structure, obtaining highly active and stable catalysts through facile regulation strategies remains a great challenge. Herein, we use a simple corrosion strategy and nitrogen plasma technology to convert cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks into nitrogen-doped CoMn bimetallic layered double hydroxides (CoMn-LDH). Under the condition of regulating the local coordination environment of the catalytic active site and the presence of rich oxygen vacancy defects, N@CoMn-LDH/CC generates a low overpotential of 219 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which exceeds that of the commercial RuO2 catalyst. Density functional theory calculation shows that nitrogen doping improves the adsorption energy of the Mn site for oxygen evolution intermediates and reduces the reaction energy barrier of the Co site. Meanwhile, experiments and theoretical calculations verify that the mechanism of nitrogen doping regulating the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) follows the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism, avoiding the collapse of the structure caused by catalyst reconstruction, thus improving the stability of oxygen evolution. This work provides a new simple strategy for the preparation of catalysts for a superior electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction.

Bioinspired trimesic acid anchored electrocatalysts with unique static and dynamic compatibility for enhanced water oxidation

Layered double hydroxides are promising candidates for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction. Unfortunately, their catalytic kinetics and long-term stabilities are far from satisfactory compared to those of rare metals. Here, we investigate the durability of nickel-iron layered double hydroxides and show that ablation of the lamellar structure due to metal dissolution is the cause of the decreased stability. Inspired by the amino acid residues in photosystem II, we report a strategy using trimesic acid anchors to prepare the subsize nickel-iron layered double hydroxides with kinetics, activity and stability superior to those of commercial catalysts. Fundamental investigations through operando spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that the superaerophobic surface facilitates prompt release of the generated O2 bubbles, and protects the structure of the catalyst. Coupling between the metals and coordinated carboxylates via C‒O‒Fe bonding prevents dissolution of the metal species, which stabilizes the electronic structure by static coordination. In addition, the uncoordinated carboxylates formed by dynamic evolution during oxygen evolution reaction serve as proton ferries to accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. This work offers a promising way to achieve breakthroughs in oxygen evolution reaction stability and dynamic performance by introducing functional ligands with static and dynamic compatibilities.

Dynamically Restructuring Nix Cry O Electrocatalyst for Stable Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Real Seawater

In the pursuit of long-term stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in seawater, retaining the intrinsic catalytic activity is essential but has remained challenging. Herein, we developed a Nix Cry O electrocatalyst that manifested exceptional OER stability in alkaline condition while improving the activity over time by dynamic self-restructuring. In 1 M KOH, Nix Cry O required overpotentials of only 270 and 320 mV to achieve current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm-2 , respectively, with excellent long-term stability exceeding 475 h at 100 mA cm-2 and 280 h at 500 mA cm-2 . The combination of electrochemical measurements and in situ studies revealed that leaching and redistribution of Cr during the prolonged electrolysis resulted in increased electrochemically active surface area. This eventually enhanced the catalyst porosity and improved OER activity. Nix Cry O was further applied in real seawater from the Red Sea (without purification, 1 M KOH added), envisaging that the dynamically evolving porosity can offset the adverse active site-blocking effect posed by the seawater impurities. Remarkably, Nix Cry O exhibited stable operation for 2000, 275 and 100 h in seawater at 10, 100 and 500 mA cm-2 , respectively. The proposed catalyst and the mechanistic insights represented a step towards realization of non-noble metal-based direct seawater splitting.

Dual Electronic Modulations on NiFeV Hydroxide@FeOx Boost Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

Nickel-iron based hydroxides have been proven to be excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, whereas they are inactive toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which severely limits their large-scale applications in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, a heterostructure consisted of NiFeV hydroxide and iron oxide supported on iron foam (NiFeV@FeOx /IF) has been designed as a highly efficient bifunctional (OER and HER) electrocatalyst. The V doping and intimate contact between NiFeV hydroxide and FeOx not only improve the entire electrical conductivity of the catalyst but also afford more high-valence Ni which serves as active sites for OER. Meanwhile, the introduction of V and FeOx reduces the electron density on lattice oxygen, which greatly facilitates desorption of Hads . All of these endow the NiFeV@FeOx /IF with exceptionally low overpotentials of 218 and 105 mV to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm-2 for OER and HER, respectively. More impressively, the electrolyzer requires an ultra-low cell voltage of 1.57 V to achieve 100 mA cm-2 and displays superior electrochemical stability for 180 h, which outperforms commercial RuO2 ||Pt/C and most of the representative catalysts reported to date. This work provides a unique route for developing high-efficiency electrocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Toward Understanding the Formation Mechanism and OER Catalytic Mechanism of Hydroxides by In Situ and Operando Techniques

Developing efficient and affordable electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a significant barrier that needs to be overcome for the practical applications of hydrogen production via water electrolysis, transforming CO2 to value-added chemicals, and metal-air batteries. Recently, hydroxides have shown promise as electrocatalysts for OER. In situ or operando techniques are particularly indispensable for monitoring the key intermediates together with understanding the reaction process, which is extremely important for revealing the formation/OER catalytic mechanism of hydroxides and preparing cost-effective electrocatalysts for OER. However, there is a lack of comprehensive discussion on the current status and challenges of studying these mechanisms using in situ or operando techniques, which hinders our ability to identify and address the obstacles present in this field. This review offers an overview of in situ or operando techniques, outlining their capabilities, advantages, and disadvantages. Recent findings related to the formation mechanism and OER catalytic mechanism of hydroxides revealed by in situ or operando techniques are also discussed in detail. Additionally, some current challenges in this field are concluded and appropriate solution strategies are provided.

Elucidating the Geometric Active Sites for Oxygen Evolution Reaction on Crystalline Iron-Substituted Cobalt Hydroxide Nanoplates

Transition-metal (oxy)hydroxides are among the most active and studied catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline electrolytes. However, the geometric distribution of active sites is still elusive. Here, using the well-defined crystalline iron-substituted cobalt hydroxide as a model catalyst, we reported the scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) study of single-crystalline nanoplates, where the oxygen evolution reaction at individual nanoplates was isolated and evaluated independently. With integrated prior- and post-SECCM scanning electron microscopy of the catalyst morphology, correlated structure-activity information of individual electrocatalysts was obtained. Our result reveals that while the active sites are largely located at the edges of the pristine Co(OH)₂ nanoplates, the Fe lattice incorporation significantly promotes the basal plane activities. Our approach of correlative imaging provides new insights into the effect of iron incorporation on active site distribution across nano-electrocatalysts.

Lattice oxygen-mediated electron tuning promotes electrochemical hydrogenation of acetonitrile on copper catalysts

Copper is well-known to be selective to primary amines via electrocatalytic nitriles hydrogenation. However, the correlation between the local fine structure and catalytic selectivity is still illusive. Herein, we find that residual lattice oxygen in oxide-derived Cu nanowires (OD-Cu NWs) plays vital roles in boosting the acetonitrile electroreduction efficiency. Especially at high current densities of more than 1.0 A cm^-2, OD-Cu NWs exhibit relatively high Faradic efficiency. Meanwhile, a series of advanced in situ characterizations and theoretical calculations uncover that oxygen residues, in the form of Cu₄-O configuration, act as electron acceptors to confine the free electron flow on the Cu surface, consequently improving the kinetics of nitriles hydrogenation catalysis. This work could provide new opportunities to further improve the hydrogenation performance of nitriles and beyond, by employing lattice oxygen-mediated electron tuning engineering.

Interface Catalysts of Ni3Fe1 Layered Double Hydroxide and Titanium Carbide for High-Performance Water Oxidation in Alkaline and Natural Conditions

The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important for many renewable energy technologies. Developing cost-effective electrocatalysts with high performance remains a great challenge. Here, we successfully demonstrate our novel interface catalyst comprised of Ni₃Fe₁-based layered double hydroxides (Ni₃Fe₁-LDH) vertically immobilized on a two-dimensional MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) surface. The Ni₃Fe₁-LDH/Ti₃C₂T_x yielded an anodic OER current of 100 mA cm^-2 at 0.28 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), nearly 74 times lower than that of the pristine Ni₃Fe₁-LDH. Furthermore, the Ni₃Fe₁-LDH/Ti₃C₂T_x catalyst requires an overpotential of only 0.31 V versus RHE to deliver an industrial-level current density as high as 1000 mA cm^-2. Such excellent OER activity was attributed to the synergistic interface effect between Ni₃Fe₁-LDH and Ti₃C₂T_x. Density functional theory (DFT) results further reveal that the Ti₃C₂T_x support can efficiently accelerate the electron extraction from Ni₃Fe₁-LDH and tailor the electronic structure of catalytic sites, resulting in enhanced OER performance.

Ferromagnetic single-atom spin catalyst for boosting water splitting

Heterogeneous single-atom spin catalysts combined with magnetic fields provide a powerful means for accelerating chemical reactions with enhanced metal utilization and reaction efficiency. However, designing these catalysts remains challenging due to the need for a high density of atomically dispersed active sites with a short-range quantum spin exchange interaction and long-range ferromagnetic ordering. Here, we devised a scalable hydrothermal approach involving an operando acidic environment for synthesizing various single-atom spin catalysts with widely tunable substitutional magnetic atoms (M₁) in a MoS₂ host. Among all the M₁/MoS₂ species, Ni₁/MoS₂ adopts a distorted tetragonal structure that prompts both ferromagnetic coupling to nearby S atoms as well as adjacent Ni₁ sites, resulting in global room-temperature ferromagnetism. Such coupling benefits spin-selective charge transfer in oxygen evolution reactions to produce triplet O₂. Furthermore, a mild magnetic field of ~0.5 T enhances the oxygen evolution reaction magnetocurrent by ~2,880% over Ni₁/MoS₂, leading to excellent activity and stability in both seawater and pure water splitting cells. As supported by operando characterizations and theoretical calculations, a great magnetic-field-enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance over Ni₁/MoS₂ is attributed to a field-induced spin alignment and spin density optimization over S active sites arising from field-regulated S(p)-Ni(d) hybridization, which in turn optimizes the adsorption energies for radical intermediates to reduce overall reaction barriers.

Oxyanion Engineering Suppressed Iron Segregation in Nickel-Iron Catalysts Toward Stable Water Oxidation

Nickel-iron catalysts represent an appealing platform for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media because of their high adjustability in components and activity. However, their long-term stabilities under high current density still remain unsatisfactory due to undesirable Fe segregation. Herein, a nitrate ion (NO₃ ^- ) tailored strategy is developed to mitigate Fe segregation, and thereby improve the OER stability of nickel-iron catalyst. X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations indicate that introducing Ni₃ (NO₃ )₂ (OH)₄ with stable NO₃ ^- in the lattice is conducive to constructing the stable interface of FeOOH/Ni₃ (NO₃ )₂ (OH)₄ via the strong interaction between Fe and incorporated NO₃ ^- . Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and wavelet transformation analysis demonstrate that the NO₃ ^- tailored nickel-iron catalyst greatly alleviates Fe segregation, exhibiting a considerably enhanced long-term stability with a six-fold improvement over FeOOH/Ni(OH)₂ without NO₃ ^- modification. This work represents a momentous step toward regulating Fe segregation for stabilizing the catalytic performances of nickel-iron catalysts.
