Fully Integrated Design of a Stretchable Solid-State Lithium-Ion Full Battery

Flexible high electrochemical active hydrogel for wearable sensors and supercapacitor electrolytes

With the rapid advancement of flexible, portable devices, hydrogel electrolytes have gained considerable attention as potential replacements for conventional liquid electrolytes. A hydrogel electrolyte was synthesised by cross-linking acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and zinc sulphate (ZnSO4). The formation of hydrogen bonds and chelate interactions between the P(AA-co-AM) polymer, CMC, and ZnSO4 created a robust network, enhancing the mechanical properties of the hydrogel electrolytes. Notably, the hydrogel electrolyte containing 0.6 % CMC demonstrated superior mechanical strength (compression strength of 1.22 MPa, tensile stress of 230 kPa, tensile strain of 424 %, adhesion strength of 1.98 MPa on wood). Additionally, the CMC/P(AA-co-AM) hydrogels exhibited commendable electrical performance (38 mS/cm) and a high gauge factor (2.9), enabling the precise detection of physiological activity signals through resistance measurements. The unique network structure of the hydrogel electrolyte also ensured a stable bonding interface between the electrode and the electrolyte. After 2000 charge-discharge cycles, the supercapacitor maintained good capacitance characteristics, with a capacitance retention rate of 71.21 % and a stable Coulombic efficiency of 98.85 %, demonstrating excellent cyclic stability. This study introduces a novel methodology for fabricating multifunctional all-solid-state supercapacitors and suggests that the hydrogel can significantly advance the development of wearable energy storage devices.

Stretchable and biodegradable plant-based redox-diffusion batteries

The redox-diffusion (RD) battery concept introduces an environmentally friendly solution for stretchable batteries in autonomous wearable electronics. By utilising plant-based redox-active biomolecules and cellulose fibers for the electrode scaffold, separator membrane, and current collector, along with a biodegradable elastomer encapsulation, the battery design overcomes the reliance on unsustainable transition metal-based active materials and non-biodegradable elastomers used in existing stretchable batteries. Importantly, it addresses the drawback of limited attainable battery capacity, where increasing the active material loading often leads to thicker and stiffer electrodes with poor mechanical properties. The concept decouples the active material loading from the mechanical structure of the electrode, enabling high mass loadings, while retaining a skin-like young's modulus and stretchability. A stretchable ion-selective membrane facilitates the RD process, allowing two separate redox couples, while preventing crossovers. This results in a high-capacity battery cell that is both electrochemically and mechanically stable, engineered from sustainable plant-based materials. Notably, the battery components are biodegradable at the end of their life, addressing concerns of e-waste and resource depletion.

Hierarchically Interpenetrated and Reentrant Microcellular Frameworks for Stretchable Lithium Metal Batteries

With the rapid development of human-friendly wearable devices, energy storage components are required to have skin-like stretchability or free-form to fit closer and more comfortably to the human body. This study introduces a hierarchically interpenetrated reentrant microcellular structure combined with 2D cellular graphene/MXene/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 3D cellular melamine foam. This composite structure works as a stretchable framework of lithium metal composite electrodes to provide stretchability for lithium metal electrodes, which are promising as next-generation energy storage systems. The interpenetrated but independent cellular structures successfully obtain stable structural deformability from the nonconductive and deformable melamine foam, while at the same time, high electrical conductivity, lithiophilicity, and mechanical stability of the graphene/CNT/MXene network serve as a lithium deposition support during the electrodeposition of lithium. The reentrant structure is fabricated by radial compressing the hierarchical cellular structures to take advantage of the structural stretchability of the accordion-like reentrant frameworks. The lithium-deposited composite electrodes exhibit much lower overpotential during Li stripping and plating than lithium metal foil anodes and show stable electrochemical performances under 30% of mechanical strain. The reentrant microcellular electrodes offer great potential for advanced designs of lithium metal electrodes for stretchable batteries with high energy density.

Stretchable and Biodegradable Batteries with High Energy and Power Density

Realizing a sustainable, technologically advanced future will necessitate solving the electronic waste problem. Biodegradable forms of electronics offer a viable path through their environmental benignity. With both the sheer number of devices produced every day as well as their areas of application ever increasing, new concepts of degradable batteries able to sustain the high power demands of modern electronics must be developed. Simultaneously, integration of electronics in close interaction with its user or powering soft robotic devices necessitates high degrees of compliance, rendering stretchable batteries indispensable. Here, a concept for merging intrinsically stretchable materials with engineered stretchability by kirigami-patterning on a component level is shown to yield high-power biodegradable batteries with reversible elasticity up to 35% when stretched uniaxially and 20% for biaxial extension. Using a combination of molybdenum metal foils, a molybdenum trioxide paste, and magnesium metal foils as electrode materials, a peak power output of 196 µW cm^-2 and an energy density of 1.72 mWh cm^-2 is achieved. The biodegradable batteries are used to power an on-skin biomedical sensor patch, enabling monitoring of sodium concentration in sweat. This concept provides a versatile route for high-power biodegradable batteries, enabling untethered soft electronic devices in a sustainable future.

Supramolecular Gel-Derived Highly Efficient Bifunctional Catalysts for Omnidirectionally Stretchable Zn-Air Batteries with Extreme Environmental Adaptability

Most existing stretchable batteries can generally only be stretched uniaxially and suffer from poor mechanical and electrochemical robustness to withstand extreme mechanical and environmental challenges. A highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst is herein developed via the unique self-templated conversion of a guanosine-based supramolecular hydrogel and presents a fully integrated design strategy to successfully fabricate an omnidirectionally stretchable and extremely environment-adaptable Zn-air battery (ZAB) through the synergistic engineering of active materials and device architecture. The electrocatalyst demonstrates a very low reversible overpotential of only 0.68 V for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER). This ZAB exhibits superior omnidirectional stretchability with a full-cell areal strain of >1000% and excellent durability, withstanding more than 10 000 stretching cycles. Promisingly, without any additional pre-treatment, the ZAB exhibits outstanding ultra-low temperature tolerance (down to -60 °C) and superior waterproofness, withstanding continuous water rinsing (>5 h) and immersion (>3 h). The present work offers a promising strategy for the design of omnidirectionally stretchable and high-performance energy storage devices for future on-skin wearable applications.

Stretchable sodium-ion capacitors based on coaxial CNT supported Na2Ti3O7 with high capacitance contribution

Stretchable sodium-ion capacitors (SSICs) are promising energy storage devices for wearable electronic devices, and the development bottleneck is the realization of stretchable battery-type electrodes with desirable electrochemical properties during dynamic deformation. Herein, we find that electrostatic modification of acidified carbon nanotubes with polyamines can introduce active sites and modulate the surface pH microenvironment, thereby developing a route to realize the in situ coaxial nanometerization of sodium titanate (nCNT@NTO). The nCNT@NTO anode material has a fast Na⁺ transport and the high capacitive contribution, which can deliver a high specific capacity (206.5 mA h g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1) and high rate performance (maintain 51% capacity at 10 A g^-1), and the ideal cycle stability (∼93% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 5 A g^-1). In addition, acrylate-rubber with high stickiness and stretchability are served as the elastic matrix both of the stretchable electrodes and quasi-solid-state electrolytes, which endows strong adhesion between electrodes and electrolytes. Thus, the accordingly assembled SSIC delivers high energy density of 8.8 mW h cm^-3 (at a power density of 0.024 W cm^-3), and excellent deformation stability (89% capacitance retention after 500 stretching cycles under 100% strain).

A Repeatable Self-Adhesive Liquid-Free Double-Network Ionic Conductor with Tunable Multifunctionality

Liquid-free ionic conductors (LFICs) have promising applications in flexible electronics because most ionic conductors currently suffer from ionic liquid leakage or water evaporation issues. However, it has been a formidable challenge for LFICs to achieve long-term repeated self-adhesion on different substrates, especially on soft biological tissues. Based on the double-network design concept, we first fabricate a series of repeatable self-adhesive liquid-free double-network ionic conductors (SALFDNICs), consisting of stretchable first poly(AA-ChCl)-type supramolecular deep eutectic polymer networks and stiff second polydopamine (PDA) networks, which can maintain sufficient dynamic hydrogen bonds and catechol groups in the ionic conductors by preventing the overoxidation of dopamine, thus balancing the contradiction between adhesion and cohesion in liquid-free ionic conductors. Therefore, SALFDNICs can instantly form various interface interaction forces with multiple substrates (adhesion strength up to 757 N/m) and firmly adhere to various substrates for 20 detachment-reattachment cycles with a reduction in adhesion strength of less than 15%. Furthermore, SALFDNICs also have other comprehensive properties, such as optimum self-healing properties (self-healing efficiency of 90%), good stretchability (strain at break of 1200%), and promising conductivity (2.31 × 10^-2 S m^-1). Therefore, we believe that the extraordinary performance of SALFDNICs is important for improving device integration and the further development of flexible electronics.

Regulating Interfacial Li-Ion Transport via an Integrated Corrugated 3D Skeleton in Solid Composite Electrolyte for All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Although solid composite electrolytes show tremendous potential for the practical solid-state lithium metal batteries, searching for a straightforward tactic to promote the ion conduction at electrolyte/electrode interface, especially settling lithium dendrites formation caused by the concentration gradient polarization, are still long-standing problems. Here, the authors report a corrugated 3D nanowires-bulk ceramic-nanowires (NCN) skeleton reinforced composite electrolyte with regulated interfacial Li-ion transport behavior. The special and integrated NCN skeleton endows the electrolyte with fast Li-ion transfer and solves the Li+ concentration polarization at electrode/electrolyte interface, thereby eliminating the energy barrier originated from the redistribution of charge carriers and offering homogeneous interfacial Li-ion flux on lithium anode. As a "double insurance", the bulk ceramic sheet in 3D framework enables the electrolyte to block the mobility of anions. The rational designed NCN composite electrolyte exhibits excellent ionic conductivity and the assembled all-solid-state battery possesses 90.2% capacity retention after 500 cycles. The proposed strategy affords a special insight in designing high-performance solid composite electrolytes.

Intrinsically Stretchable and Printable Lithium-Ion Battery for Free-Form Configuration

For next-generation wearable and implantable devices, energy storage devices should be soft and mechanically deformable and easily printable on any substrate or active devices. Herein, we introduce a fully stretchable lithium-ion battery system for free-form configurations in which all components, including electrodes, current collectors, separators, and encapsulants, are intrinsically stretchable and printable. The stretchable electrode acquires intrinsic stretchability and improved interfacial adhesion with the active materials via a functionalized physically cross-linked organogel as a stretchable binder and separator. Intrinsically stretchable current collectors are fabricated in the form of nanocomposites consisting of a matrix with excellent barrier properties without swelling in organic electrolytes and nanostructure-controlled multimodal conductive fillers. Due to structural and materials freedoms, we successfully fabricate several types of stretchable lithium-ion battery that reliably operates under various stretch deformations with capacity and rate capability comparable with a nonstretchable battery over 2.5 mWh cm^-2 at 0.5 C, even under high mass loading conditions over 10 mg cm^-2, including stacked configuration, direct integration on both sides of a stretch fabric, and application of various electrode materials and electrolytes. Especially, our stretchable battery printed on a stretch fabric also exhibits high performance and stretch/long-term stabilities in the air even with wearing and pulling.

Supramolecular-induced 2.40 V 130 °C working-temperature-range supercapacitor aqueous electrolyte of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide in dimethyl sulfoxide-water

Increasing the electrochemical stability window and working temperature range of supercapacitor aqueous electrolyte is the major task in order to advance aqueous electrolyte-based supercapacitors. Here, a supramolecular induced new electrolyte of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and water co-solvent system is proposed. Adjusting the coordination structure among LiTFSI, DMSO, and water in the electrolyte via supramolecular interactions results in its high ionic conductivity, low viscosity, wide electrochemical stability window, and large working temperature range. The new electrolyte-based supercapacitors can work in 2.40 V working potential and 130 °C working-temperature range from -40 to 90 °C. The devices exhibit good electrochemical performances, especially the energy density over 21 Wh kg^-1, which is much higher than that with traditional aqueous electrolytes (<10 Wh kg^-1). The work paves a way to develop high-performance aqueous electrolytes for supercapacitors.

A Tissue-Like Soft All-Hydrogel Battery

To develop wearable and implantable bioelectronics accommodating the dynamic and uneven biological tissues and reducing undesired immune responses, it is critical to adopt batteries with matched mechanical properties with tissues as power sources. However, the batteries available cannot reach the softness of tissues due to the high Young's moduli of components (e.g., metals, carbon materials, conductive polymers, or composite materials). The fabrication of tissue-like soft batteries thus remains a challenge. Here, the first ultrasoft batteries totally based on hydrogels are reported. The ultrasoft batteries exhibit Young's moduli of 80 kPa, perfectly matching skin and organs (e.g., heart). The high specific capacities of 82 mAh g^-1 in all-hydrogel lithium-ion batteries and 370 mAh g^-1 in all-hydrogel zinc-ion batteries at a current density of 0.5 A g^-1 are achieved. Both high stability and biocompatibility of the all-hydrogel batteries have been demonstrated upon the applications of wearable and implantable. This work illuminates a pathway for designing power sources for wearable and implantable electronics with matched mechanical properties.

Stretchable Energy Storage Devices Based on Carbon Materials

Stretchable energy storage devices are essential for developing stretchable electronics and have thus attracted extensive attention in a variety of fields including wearable devices and bioelectronics. Carbon materials, e.g., carbon nanotube and graphene, are widely investigated as electrode materials for energy storage devices due to their large specific surface areas and combined remarkable electrical and electrochemical properties. They can also be effectively composited with many other functional materials or designed into different microstructures for fabricating stretchable energy storage devices. This review summarizes recent advances toward the development of carbon-material-based stretchable energy storage devices. An overview of common carbon materials' fundamental properties and general strategies to enable the stretchability of carbon-material-based electrodes are presented. The performances of the as-fabricated stretchable energy storage devices including supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, metal-air batteries, and other batteries are then carefully discussed. Challenges and perspectives in this emerging field are finally highlighted for future studies.

Stabilizing the solid-electrolyte interphase with polyacrylamide for high-voltage aqueous lithium-ion batteries

The introduction of “water‐in‐salt” electrolyte (WiSE) concept opens a new horizon to aqueous electrochemistry that is benefited from the formation of a solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI). However, such SEI still faces multiple challenges, including dissolution, mechanical damaging, and incessant reforming, which result in poor cycling stability. Here, we report a polymeric additive, polyacrylamide (PAM) that effectively stabilizes the interphase in WiSE. With the addition of 5 molar % PAM to 21 mol kg⁻¹ LiTFSI electrolyte, a LiMn₂O₄∥L‐TiO₂ full cell exhibits enhanced cycling stability with 86 % capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1 C. The formation mechanism and evolution of PAM‐assisted SEI was investigated using operando small angle neutron scattering and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which reveal that PAM minimizes the presence of free water molecules at the anode/electrolyte interface, accelerates the TFSI⁻ anion decomposition, and densifies the SEI.

A Stretchable and Safe Polymer Electrolyte with a Protecting-Layer Strategy for Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

An elastic and safe electrolyte is demanded for flexible batteries. Herein, a stretchable solid electrolyte comprised of crosslinked elastic polymer matrix, poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), and flameproof triethyl phosphate (TEP) is fabricated, which exhibits ultrahigh elongation of 450%, nonflammability and ionic conductivity above 1 mS cm-1. In addition, in order to improve the interface compatibility between the electrolyte and Li anode and stabilize the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), a protecting layer containing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is designed to effectively prevent the anode from reacting with TEP and optimize the chemical composition in SEI, leading to a tougher and more stable SEI on the anode. The LiFePO4/Li cells employing this double-layer electrolyte exhibit an 85.0% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1 C. Moreover, a flexible battery based on this solid electrolyte is fabricated, which can work in stretched, folded, and twisted conditions. This design of a stretchable double-layer solid electrolyte provides a new concept for safe and flexible solid-state batteries.

Energy Harvesting and Storage with Soft and Stretchable Materials

This review highlights various modes of converting ambient sources of energy into electricity using soft and stretchable materials. These mechanical properties are useful for emerging classes of stretchable electronics, e-skins, bio-integrated wearables, and soft robotics. The ability to harness energy from the environment allows these types of devices to be tetherless, thereby leading to a greater range of motion (in the case of robotics), better compliance (in the case of wearables and e-skins), and increased application space (in the case of electronics). A variety of energy sources are available including mechanical (vibrations, human motion, wind/fluid motion), electromagnetic (radio frequency (RF), solar), and thermodynamic (chemical or thermal energy). This review briefly summarizes harvesting mechanisms and focuses on the materials' strategies to render such devices into soft or stretchable embodiments.

Multifunctional Batteries: Flexible, Transient, and Transparent

The primary task of a battery is to store energy and to power electronic devices. This has hardly changed over the years despite all the progress made in improving their electrochemical performance. In comparison to batteries, electronic devices are continuously equipped with new functions, and they also change their physical appearance, becoming flexible, rollable, stretchable, or maybe transparent or even transient or degradable. Mechanical flexibility makes them attractive for wearable electronics or for electronic paper; transparency is desired for transparent screens or smart windows, and degradability or transient properties have the potential to reduce electronic waste. For fully integrated and self-sufficient systems, these devices have to be powered by batteries with similar physical characteristics. To make the currently used rigid and heavy batteries flexible, transparent, and degradable, the whole battery architecture including active materials, current collectors, electrolyte/separator, and packaging has to be redesigned. This requires a fundamental paradigm change in battery research, moving away from exclusively addressing the electrochemical aspects toward an interdisciplinary approach involving chemists, materials scientists, and engineers. This Outlook provides an overview of the different activities in the field of flexible, transient, and transparent batteries with a focus on the challenges that have to be faced toward the development of such multifunctional energy storage devices.

Ultra-high throughput manufacturing method for composite solid-state electrolytes

The transition from liquid organic electrolytes to solid-state electrolytes promises safer and more energy-dense lithium ion batteries. Although this technology has been demonstrated, the question of how to manufacture solid-state batteries at the cost and scales needed to be competitive remains. Here we propose and demonstrate curtain coating as a method for manufacturing composite solid-state electrolytes in roll-to-roll processes at web-speeds of over 80 m/min. The method is compatible with existing lithium-ion battery electrode manufacturing lines and is able to produce uniform electrolyte films with thicknesses below 15 micrometers.

A high-voltage quasi-solid-state flexible supercapacitor with a wide operational temperature range based on a low-cost "water-in-salt" hydrogel electrolyte

Recently, "water-in-salt" electrolytes have provided a huge boost to the realization of high energy density for water-based supercapacitors by broadening the electrochemical stability window. However, the high cost and low conductivity of high concentration LiTFSI greatly restrict the possibility of practical application. Herein, we adopt a new strategy to develop a low-cost and quasi-solid-state polyelectrolyte hydrogel accommodating a superhigh concentration of CH₃COOK through in situ polymerization, avoiding the problem that many conventional polymers cannot accommodate ultra-high ion concentration. The polyelectrolyte hydrogel with 24 M CH₃COOK exhibits a conductivity of up to 35.8 mS cm^-1 and a stretchability of 950%. With advanced N-doped graphene hydrogel electrodes, the assembled supercapacitor yields a voltage window of 2.1 V with an energy density of 33.0 W h kg^-1 and superior cyclability with 88.2% capacitance retention at 4 A g^-1 after 6000 cycles comparable to those supercapacitors using high-cost LiTFSI salts. Besides, the supercapacitor with excellent temperature stability in the range of -20 to 70 °C can light an LED for more than one minute. The assembled flexible device with the PAAK/CMC-24 M gel film sandwiched in between demonstrates excellent bendability from 0° to 180° and shows great potential for flexible/wearable electronic devices. Our feasible approach provides a new route for assembling quasi-solid-state flexible high-energy storage devices with "water-in-salt" electrolytes.

Resolving the stacking fault structure of silver nanoplates

The stacking fault structure (SFT) is the key to understanding the symmetry breaking of fcc nanocrystals and the origin of two-dimensional (2D) anisotropic growth of nanoplates. After resolving the SFT in Ag nanoplates under aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations, it is found that there are three basic stacking faults, namely, twinned stacking fault (SF-t), a layer missed stacking fault (SF-m) and a layer inserted stacking fault (SF-i). The SFT is composed of one or a combination of two or all of the three kinds of stacking faults with a total number varying from 4 to 9. It has been demonstrated that the SFT could generate concave faces, step faces and (100) faces in the lateral directions, which provides sites for adding-atoms with a higher coordination number than on the top and bottom flat (111) faces, and results in the anisotropic growth along the 2D direction. Additionally, Ag nanoplates fall into either center symmetry or mirror symmetry when the corresponding number is even or odd. The center symmetry and mirror symmetry with different side face arrangements in turn manipulate the shape evolution to cubes and bipyramids, respectively. Our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the formation and growth of 2D metal nanomaterials.

Enhanced Solar-Driven-Heating and Tough Hydrogel Electrolyte by Photothermal Effect and Hofmeister Effect

Although plenty of progress and achievements are made on hydrogel electrolyte researches, the inherent inferior low-temperature performance of hydrogel electrolyte is still a severe challenge for wider application on the energy storage devices, due to the high content of water within hydrogel. Herein, an enhanced solar-driven-heating composite hydrogel electrolyte and a solar-driven-heating graphene based micro-supercapacitor are developed utilizing the photothermal conversion ability and self-initiation of MoS₂ nanosheets and additional Hofmeister effect. The MoS₂ composite hydrogel electrolyte not only improves the reliability of micro-supercapacitor owing to its splendid mechanical properties, but also endows the micro-supercapacitor with superior low-temperature electrochemical performance and broadens its operating environment to a much lower temperature (-56 °C), which should be attributed to the excellent ability in converting endless solar energy into required thermal energy. These efforts would construct a new application platform for solar energy conversion and present an efficient method to structure severe-cold resistant solid state energy storage devices for next-generation.

Polymer-Based Batteries-Flexible and Thin Energy Storage Systems

Batteries have become an integral part of everyday life-from small coin cells to batteries for mobile phones, as well as batteries for electric vehicles and an increasing number of stationary energy storage applications. There is a large variety of standardized battery sizes (e.g., the familiar AA-battery or AAA-battery). Interestingly, all these battery systems are based on a huge number of different cell chemistries depending on the application and the corresponding requirements. There is not one single battery type fulfilling all demands for all imaginable applications. One battery class that has been gaining significant interest in recent years is polymer-based batteries. These batteries utilize organic materials as the active parts within the electrodes without utilizing metals (and their compounds) as the redox-active materials. Such polymer-based batteries feature a number of interesting properties, like high power densities and flexible batteries fabrication, among many more.

Stretchable Lithium-Ion Battery Based on Re-entrant Micro-honeycomb Electrodes and Cross-Linked Gel Electrolyte

Stretchable energy storage devices are of great interest because of their potential applications in body-friendly, skin-like, wearable devices. However, stretchable batteries are very challenging to fabricate. The electrodes must have a degree of stretchability because the active materials occupy most of the volume, and the separator and packaging should also be stretchable. Here, an all-component stretchable lithium-ion battery was realized by leveraging the structural stretchability of re-entrant micro-honeycomb graphene-carbon nanotube (CNT)/active material composite electrodes and a physically cross-linked gel electrolyte, without using an inactive elastomeric substrate or matrix. Active materials interconnected via the entangled CNT and graphene sheets provided a mechanically stable porous network framework, and the inwardly protruding framework in the re-entrant honeycomb structure allowed for structural stretching during deformation. The composite network consisting solely of binder-free, highly conductive materials provided superior electron transfer, and vertically aligned microchannels enabled facile ion transport. Additionally, the physically cross-linked gel electrolyte increased the mechanical stability upon deformation of the electrodes and was effective as a stretchable separator. The resulting stretchable battery showed a high areal capacity of 5.05 mAh·cm^-2, superior electrochemical performance up to 50% strain under repeated (up to 500) stretch-release cycles, and long-term stability of 95.7% after 100 cycles in air conditions.

Stretchable electrochemical energy storage devices

Deformable energy storage devices are needed to power the next generation of wearable electronics. This review highlights the most recent advances in stretchable energy storage devices with a focus on batteries and supercapacitors.

Decoupling of mechanical properties and ionic conductivity in supramolecular lithium ion conductors

The emergence of wearable electronics puts batteries closer to the human skin, exacerbating the need for battery materials that are robust, highly ionically conductive, and stretchable. Herein, we introduce a supramolecular design as an effective strategy to overcome the canonical tradeoff between mechanical robustness and ionic conductivity in polymer electrolytes. The supramolecular lithium ion conductor utilizes orthogonally functional H-bonding domains and ion-conducting domains to create a polymer electrolyte with unprecedented toughness (29.3 MJ m-3) and high ionic conductivity (1.2 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C). Implementation of the supramolecular ion conductor as a binder material allows for the creation of stretchable lithium-ion battery electrodes with strain capability of over 900% via a conventional slurry process. The supramolecular nature of these battery components enables intimate bonding at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Combination of these stretchable components leads to a stretchable battery with a capacity of 1.1 mAh cm-2 that functions even when stretched to 70% strain. The method reported here of decoupling ionic conductivity from mechanical properties opens a promising route to create high-toughness ion transport materials for energy storage applications.
