Applications of Nanomaterials in Asymmetric Photocatalysis: Recent Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities

Efficiently photocatalysis activation of peroxymonosulfate by bimetallic metal-organic frameworks Mn-MIL-53(Fe) for ibuprofen degradation: Synergistic efficiency, mechanism and degradation pathways

In this study, a UV-driven photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was constructed using bimetallic metal-organic frameworks to degrade pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Mn-MIL-53(Fe) was successfully synthesised by adjusting the doping ratio of Mn using solvothermal method. The removal of ibuprofen (IBP) by UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process was as high as 79.7% in 30 min with a Mn doping ratio of 1.0 (molar ratio of Mn to Fe), and the reaction rate constant was 26.9% higher than undoped. Mn-MIL-53(Fe) had been systematically characterized in terms of its physical structure, microscopic morphology, surface functional groups and photoelectric properties. The mechanism investigation revealed that the cycling of Mn and Fe accelerated the rate of electron transfer in the system, which significantly increased the activation efficacy of PMS to generate more hydroxyl and sulfate radicals for IBP degradation. A total of 13 transformation products were detected during the degradation of IBP by the UV/Mn-MIL-53(Fe)/PMS process. Theoretical calculations were used to predict the sites on the IBP molecule that were vulnerable to attack, and four possible degradation pathways were deduced. The excellent stability and efficient catalytic properties of Mn-MIL-53(Fe) provided a promising solution to the problem of water treatment contaminated with PPCPs.

Biomimetic Chiral Nanomaterials with Selective Catalysis Activity

Chiral nanomaterials with unique chiral configurations and biocompatible ligands have been booming over the past decade for their interesting chiroptical effect, unique catalytical activity, and related bioapplications. The catalytic activity and selectivity of chiral nanomaterials have emerged as important topics, that can be potentially controlled and optimized by the rational biochemical design of nanomaterials. In this review, chiral nanomaterials synthesis, composition, and catalytic performances of different biohybrid chiral nanomaterials are discussed. The construction of chiral nanomaterials with multiscale chiral geometries along with the underlying principles for enhancing chiroptical responses are highlighted. Various biochemical approaches to regulate the selectivity and catalytic activity of chiral nanomaterials for biocatalysis are also summarized. Furthermore, attention is paid to specific chiral ligands, materials compositions, structure characteristics, and so on for introducing selective catalytic activities of representative chiral nanomaterials, with emphasis on substrates including small molecules, biological macromolecule, and in-site catalysis in living systems. Promising progress has also been emphasized in chiral nanomaterials featuring structural versatility and improved chiral responses that gave rise to unprecedented chances to utilize light for biocatalytic applications. In summary, the challenges, future trends, and prospects associated with chiral nanomaterials for catalysis are comprehensively proposed.

Chiral Au-Pd Alloy Nanorods with Tunable Optical Chirality and Catalytically Active Surfaces

Integrating the plasmonic chirality with excellent catalytic activities in plasmonic hybrid nanostructures provides a promising strategy to realize the chiral nanocatalysis toward many chemical reactions. However, the controllable synthesis of catalytically active chiral plasmonic nanoparticles with tailored geometries and compositions remains a significant challenge. Here it is demonstrated that chiral Au-Pd alloy nanorods with tunable optical chirality and catalytically active surfaces can be achieved by a seed-mediated coreduction growth method. Through manipulating the chiral inducers, Au nanorods selectively transform into two different intrinsically chiral Au-Pd alloy nanorods with distinct geometric chirality and tunable optical chirality. By further adjusting several key synthetic parameters, the optical chirality, composition, and geometry of the chiral Au-Pd nanorods are fine-tailored. More importantly, the chiral Au-Pd alloy nanorods exhibit appealing chiral catalytic activities as well as polarization-dependent plasmon-enhanced nanozyme catalytic activity, which has great potential for chiral nanocatalysis and plasmon-induced chiral photochemistry.

Emerging trends in chiral inorganic nanomaterials for enantioselective catalysis

Asymmetric transformations and synthesis have garnered considerable interest in recent decades due to the extensive need for chiral organic compounds in biomedical, agrochemical, chemical, and food industries. The field of chiral inorganic catalysts, garnering considerable interest for its contributions to asymmetric organic transformations, has witnessed remarkable advancements and emerged as a highly innovative research area. Here, we review the latest developments in this dynamic and emerging field to comprehensively understand the advances in chiral inorganic nanocatalysts and stimulate further progress in asymmetric catalysis.

Doping Ferrocene-Based Conjugated Microporous Polymers with 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The design and synthesis of organic photocatalysts remain a great challenge due to their strict structural constraints. However, this could be mitigated by achieving structural flexibility by constructing permanent porosity into the materials. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are an emerging class of porous materials with an amorphous, three-dimensional network structure, which makes it possible to integrate the elaborate functional groups to enhance photocatalytic performance. Here, we report the synthesis of a novel CMP, named TAPFc-TFPPy-CMP, constructed by 1,1'3,3'-tetra(4-aminophenyl)ferrocene (TAPFc) and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) monomers. The integration of the p-type dopant 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) into the TAPFc-TFPPy-CMP improved the light adsorption performance, leading to a decrease in the optical bandgap from 2.00 to 1.43 eV. The doped CMP (TCNQ@TAPFc-TFPPy-CMP) exhibited promising catalytic activity in photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible light, yielding 546.8 μmol g-1 h-1 of CO with a selectivity of 96% and 5.2 μmol g-1 h-1 of CH4. This represented an 80% increase in the CO yield compared to the maternal TAPFc-TFPPy-CMP. The steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence lifetime (FL) measurements reveal faster carrier separation and transport after the doping. This study provides guidance for the development of organic photocatalysts for the utilization of renewable energy.

Merging gold plasmonic nanoparticles and L-proline inside a MOF for plasmon-induced visible light chiral organocatalysis at low temperature

Light-driven asymmetric photocatalysis represents a straightforward approach in modern organic chemistry. In comparison to the homogeneous one, heterogeneous asymmetric photocatalysis has the advantages of easy catalyst separation, recovery, and reuse, thus being cost- and time-effective. Here, we demonstrate how plasmon-active centers (gold nanoparticles - AuNPs) allow visible light triggering of chiral catalyst (proline) in model aldol reaction between acetone and benzaldehyde. The metal-organic framework UiO-66-NH2 was used as an advanced host platform for the loading of proline and AuNPs and their stabilization in spatial proximity. Aldol reactions were carried out at a low temperature (-20 °C) under light illumination which resulted in 91% ee with a closed-to-quantitative yield, 4.5 times higher than that without light (i.e. in the absence of plasmon triggering). A set of control experiments and quantum chemical modeling revealed that the plasmon assistance proceeds through hot electron excitation followed by an interaction with an enamine with the formation of anion radical species. We also demonstrated the high stability of the proposed system in multiple catalytic cycles without leaching metal ions, which makes our approach especially promising for heterogeneous asymmetric photocatalysis.

A novel visible-light-driven Z-scheme C3N5/BiVO4 heterostructure with enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance

As a visible-light response semiconductor materials, bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is extensively applied in photodegradation organic dye field. In this study, we synthesized C3N5 nanosheets and coupled with decahedral BiVO4 to construct a Z-scheme C3N5/BiVO4 heterostructure with close interface contact. By introducing C3N5 into BiVO4, the built Z-scheme transfer pathway provides silky channel for charge carrier migration between different moieties and enables photoexcited electrons and holes accumulated on the surface of BiVO4 and C3N5. The accelerated separation of charge carriers ensures C3N5/BiVO4 heterostructures with a powerful oxidation capacity compared with pure BiVO4. Due to the synergistic effect in Z-scheme heterostructure, the C3N5/BiVO4 demonstrated an improved photodegradation ability of rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) that of bare BiVO4.

Himalayan lichen biomass for green synthesis of silver nanocolloids: growth kinetics, effect of pH and metal sensing

Lichen is one of the most abundant non-vascular biomasses; however, a systematic study on the application of biomass in nanomaterial synthesis is very limited. In this study, an aqueous lichen extract was obtained from Hypotrachyna cirrhata, one of the most abundant Himalayan lichen biomasses, using a simple cold percolation method. The effects of extract-to-silver nitrate mixing ratio, pH and waiting time on the growth and stability of nanoparticles were systematically explored. The rate constant for bio-reduction was found to be 5.3 × 10-3 min-1. Transmission electron microscopy showed a narrow particle size distribution with a mean particle size of 11.1 ± 3.6 nm (n = 200). The X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction techniques confirmed the formation of cubic crystals. The synthesized colloidal solution showed excellent response to Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions in spiked water samples. The limit of detection and calibration sensitivity for Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions were found to be 1 and 5 mg l-1 and 2.9 × 10-3 and 1.6 × 10-3 units ppm-1, respectively. These findings suggested that spherical silver nanoparticles with a narrow particle size distribution can be synthesized on a laboratory scale using an aqueous H. cirrhata lichen extract, and the colloidal solution can be used for the detection of selected heavy metals in water samples.

Fabrication of carbon-based materials derived from a cobalt-based organic framework for enhancing photocatalytic degradation of dyes

The pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has emerged as a promising route to synthesize carbon/metal oxide-based materials with diverse phase compositions, morphologies, sizes and surface areas. In this paper, 1,3,5-benzoic acid (BTC) and 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridinyl)-1-pyridine (TPP) were used as ligands to prepare a novel cobalt-based MOF (Co-MOF) which was used as a precursor to obtain five carbon-based materials at different temperatures (Co-C200/400/600/800/1000). Furthermore, five dyes were used as degradation targets to investigate the photocatalytic degradation performance of the title materials under UV light irradiation. Co-C1000 exhibited the best photocatalytic degradation performance for methyl orange (MO), and the degradation rate could reach 99.21%. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to narrower band-gaps and a synergistic effect originating from the well-aligned straddling band structures between Co/CoO/Co3O4 and C, also resulting in a faster interfacial charge transfer during the photocatalytic reaction. This study will aid in the development of photocatalysts generated from carbon-based materials via the pyrolysis transformation of MOFs, therefore greatly enhancing the photocatalytic performance.

Heating-induced adsorption promoting the efficient removal of toluene by the metal-organic framework UiO-66 (Zr) under visible light

The removal of indoor/outdoor toluene by photocatalysis has drawn much attention due to its low energy consumption and easy availability. However, light inevitably generates heat, and pollutants desorb from catalysts as the temperature rises, which is not beneficial to degradation. Contrast to the frequently occurred phenomena, we firstly found that the adsorption capacity of UiO-66 (Zr) on toluene increased with increasing temperature as adsorption isotherms and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectra (in-situ FTIR) showed. The optimum temperature was 30 °C. This stage in which adsorption capacity was positively correlated with temperature was called heating-induced adsorption, which achieved a toluene removal efficiency of 69.6 %. By density functional theory (DFT) calculations and changing the metal centers and organic ligands of UiO-66 (Zr) respectively, we disclosed that the heating-induced adsorption was mainly related to the π-π stacking interaction of MOF ligands and toluene. The analysis of samples before and after adsorption showed that the interaction between UiO-66 (Zr) and adsorbed toluene facilitated the charge transfer and prolonged the carrier lifetime, leading to the increase of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in photocatalysis. Therefore, a synergistic effect between heating-induced adsorption and photocatalysis was proposed by analyzing the adsorption of toluene on UiO-66 (Zr) in detail. This work provided new viewpoint to understand the role of concomitant heat contributed to the adsorption and degradation of toluene during photocatalysis.

Chiral Inorganic Nanomaterials for Photo(electro)catalytic Conversion

Chiral inorganic nanomaterials due to their unique asymmetric nanostructures have gradually demonstrated intriguing chirality-dependent performance in photo(electro)catalytic conversion, such as water splitting. However, understanding the correlation between chiral inorganic characteristics and the photo(electro)catalytic process remains challenging. In this perspective, we first highlight the chirality source of inorganic nanomaterials and briefly introduce photo(electro)catalysis systems. Then, we delve into an in-depth discussion of chiral effects exerted by chiral nanostructures and their photo-electrochemistry properties, while emphasizing the emerging chiral inorganic nanomaterials for photo(electro)catalytic conversion. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of chiral inorganic nanomaterials for photo(electro)catalytic conversion are prospected. This perspective provides a comprehensive overview of chiral inorganic nanomaterials and their potential in photo(electro)catalytic conversion, which is beneficial for further research in this area.

In Situ Formation of CoP/Co3 O4 Heterojunction for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Electrochemical water splitting is an environmentally friendly and effective energy storage method. However, it is still a huge challenge to prepare non-noble metal based electrocatalysts that possess high activity and long-term durability to realize efficient water splitting. Here, we present a novel method of low-temperature phosphating for preparing CoP/Co3 O4 heterojunction nanowires catalyst on titanium mesh (TM) substrate that can be used for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and overall water splitting. CoP/Co3 O4 @TM heterojunction showed an excellent catalytic performance and long-term durability in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The overpotential of CoP/Co3 O4 @TM heterojunction was only 257 mV at 20 mA cm-2 during the OER process, and it could work stably more than 40 h at 1.52 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE). During the HER process, the overpotential of CoP/Co3 O4 @TM heterojunction was only 98 mV at -10 mA cm-2 . More importantly, when used as anodic and cathodic electrocatalyst, they achieved 10 mA cm-2 at 1.59 V. The Faradaic efficiencies of OER and HER were 98.4 % and 99.4 %, respectively, outperforming Ru/Ir-based noble metal electrocatalysts and other non-noble metal electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Construction of Pt/Pt-Au doped chiral nanostructures using arginine and porphyrin assemblies as templates for enantioselective photocatalysis

Chiral nanomaterials with different functions have been widely developed, but the deep understanding of the structural effects of nanocatalysts on enantioselective photocatalytic efficiency is still highly demanded. Herein, Pt and Pt-Au-bimetal-doped chiral nanostructures with various morphologies and compositions are facilely constructed using L-/D-arginine (L-/D-Arg) and mono-sulfonate tetraphenyl porphyrin (H2TPPS) assemblies as chiral templates. Interestingly, these Pt and Pt-Au-doped chiral nanostructures, including nanorods (NR) and nanospheres (NS), can be well regulated by controlling pH, ionic strength, and reaction time of the assembling system of Arg and H2TPPS. More impressively, specific Au growth direction along the Pt-doped chiral NR (L-/D-Pt-NR) is observed (from tip to middle) during the preparation of Pt-Au-bimetal-doped chiral NR (L-/D-Pt-Au-NR) and their compositions can be finely controlled by simply adjusting the concentrations of HAuCl4. As expected, the chiral nanostructures exhibit superior enantioselective photocatalytic ability toward chiral organics under visible light: the oxidation rate of L-dihydroxy-phenylalanine (L-DOPA) catalyzed by L-Pt-NR (or D-DOPA catalyzed by D-Pt-NR) is about 60% higher than that of L-DOPA catalyzed by D-Pt-NR (or L-DOPA catalyzed by D-Pt-NR). This study provides a facile strategy to construct chiral nanostructures for the photocatalytic conversion of chiral organics.

Bottom-Up Design of Photoactive Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks for Visible-Light-Driven Asymmetric Catalysis

The development of chiral covalentorganic framework catalysts (CCOFs) to synthesize enantiopure organic compounds is crucial and highly desirable in synthetic chemistry. Photocatalytic asymmetric reactions based on CCOFs are eco-friendly and sustainable while they are still elaborate. In this work, we report a general bottom-up strategy to successfully synthesize several photoactive CCOFX (X = 1-5 and 1-Boc). The photoactive porphyrin building blocks are selected as knots and various secondary-amine-based chiral catalytic centers are immobilized on the pore walls of CCOFX through a rational design of benzoimidazole linkers. The porphyrin units act as light-harvesting antennae to generate photo-induced charge carriers for the activation of bromide during the photocatalytic asymmetric alkylation of aldehydes. Meanwhile, various aldehydes are activated by the chiral secondary amine to form the target products with a high yield (up to 97%) and ee value (up to 93%). The results significantly expand the scope to predesign CCOF photocatalysts for visible-light-driven asymmetric catalysis.

Photocatalytic Activity of the Oxidation Stabilized Ti3 C2 Tx MXene in Decomposing Methylene Blue, Bromocresol Green and Commercial Textile Dye

Two-dimensional MXenes are excellent photocatalysts. However, their low oxidation stability makes controlling photocatalytic processes challenging. For the first time, this work elucidates the influence of the oxidation stabilization of model 2D Ti3 C2 Tx MXene on its optical and photocatalytic properties. The delaminated MXene is synthesized via two well-established approaches: hydrofluoric acid/tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH-MXene) and minimum intensive layer delamination with hydrochloric acid/lithium fluoride (MILD-MXene) and then stabilized by L-ascorbic acid. Both MXenes at a minimal concentration of 32 mg L-1 show almost 100% effectiveness in the 180-min photocatalytic decomposition of 25 mg L-1 model methylene blue and bromocresol green dyes. Industrial viability is achieved by decomposing a commercial textile dye having 100 times higher concentration than that of model dyes. In such conditions, MILD-MXene is the most efficient due to less wide optical band gap than TMAOH-MXene. The MILD-MXene required only few seconds of UV light, simulated white light, or 500 nm (cyan) light irradiation to fully decompose the dye. The photocatalytic mechanism of action is associated with the interplay between surface dye adsorption and the reactive oxygen species generated by MXene under light irradiation. Importantly, both MXenes are successfully reused and retained approximately 70% of their activity.

Recent advances on surface mounted metal-organic frameworks for energy storage and conversion applications: Trends, challenges, and opportunities

Establishing green and reliable energy resources is very important to counteract the carbon footprints and negative impact of non-renewable energy resources. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous material finding numerous applications due to their exceptional qualities, such as high surface area, low density, superior structural flexibility, and stability. Recently, increased attention has been paid to surface mounted MOFs (SURMOFs), which is nothing but thin film of MOF, as a new category in nanotechnology having unique properties compared to bulk MOFs. With the advancement of material growth and synthesis technologies, the fine tunability of film thickness, consistency, size, and geometry with a wide range of MOF complexes is possible. In this review, we recapitulate various synthesis approaches of SURMOFs including epitaxial synthesis approach, direct solvothermal method, Langmuir-Blodgett LBL deposition, Inkjet printing technique and others and then correlated the synthesis-structure-property relationship in terms of energy storage and conversion applications. Further the critical assessment and current problems of SURMOFs have been briefly discussed to explore the future opportunities in SURMOFs for energy storage and conversion applications.

Confining charge-transfer complex in a metal-organic framework for photocatalytic CO2 reduction in water

In the quest for renewable fuel production, the selective conversion of CO₂ to CH₄ under visible light in water is a leading-edge challenge considering the involvement of kinetically sluggish multiple elementary steps. Herein, 1-pyrenebutyric acid is post-synthetically grafted in a defect-engineered Zr-based metal organic framework by replacing exchangeable formate. Then, methyl viologen is incorporated in the confined space of post-modified MOF to achieve donor-acceptor complex, which acts as an antenna to harvest visible light, and regulates electron transfer to the catalytic center (Zr-oxo cluster) to enable visible-light-driven CO₂ reduction reaction. The proximal presence of the charge transfer complex enhances charge transfer kinetics as realized from transient absorption spectroscopy, and the facile electron transfer helps to produce CH₄ from CO₂. The reported material produces 7.3 mmol g^-1 of CH₄ under light irradiation in aqueous medium using sacrificial agents. Mechanistic information gleans from electron paramagnetic resonance, in situ diffuse reflectance FT-IR and density functional theory calculation.

Preparation of chitosan/retinoic acid @ nanocapsules/TiO2 self-cleaning one-dimensional photonic crystals and the study of the visual detection of acute promyelocytic leukemia

Sample exposure to air during optical detection leads to the widespread dispersal of microorganisms in the air, posing a health threat to patients and healthcare workers and potentially causing numerous nosocomial infections. In this study, a TiO₂/CS-nanocapsules-Va visualization sensor was developed by alternatively spin-coating TiO₂, CS and nanocapsules-Va. The uniformly distributed TiO₂ can endow the visualization sensor with good photocatalytic performance, and the nanocapsules-Va can bind specifically to the antigen and change its volume. The research results showed that the visualization sensor cannot only detect acute promyelocytic leukemia conveniently, quickly and accurately, but also kill bacteria, decompose organic residues in blood samples under the influence of sunlight, and have an extensive application prospect in substance detection and disease diagnosis.

Lateral Bending of Ag Nanowires toward Controllable Manipulation

Nanowires (NWs) provide opportunities for building high-performance sensors and devices at micro-/nanoscales. Directional movement and assembly of NWs have attracted extensive attention; however, controllable manipulation remains challenging partly due to the lack of understanding on interfacial interactions between NWs and substrates (or contacting probes). In the present study, lateral bending of Ag NWs was investigated under various bending angles and pushing velocities, and the mechanical performance corresponding to microstructures was clarified based on high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTRM) detections. The bending-angle-dependent fractures of Ag NWs were detected by an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the fractures occurred when the bending angle was larger than 80°. Compared with an Ag substrate, Ag NWs exhibited a lower system stiffness according to the nanoindentation with an AFM probe. HRTRM observations indicated that there were grain boundaries inside Ag NWs, which would be contributors to the generation of fractures and cracks on Ag NWs during lateral bending and nanoindentation. This study provides a guide to controllably manipulate NWs and fabricate high-performance micro-/nanodevices.

MoS2/polyaniline (PANI)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)@BiFeO3 bilayer hollow nanofiber membrane: Photocatalytic filtration and piezoelectric effect enhancing degradation and disinfection

A novel MoS₂/polyaniline (PANI)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)@BiFeO₃ bilayer hollow nanofiber membrane (PPBM-H) was successfully synthesized by coaxial electrospinning technique. In the nanofiber, BiFeO₃ nanoparticles (NPs) and MoS₂ nanosheets (NSs) were loaded in the middle and outer layers of the PANI/PAN composites, respectively, which constructs a type II heterojunction with spatially separated microtopography, thus significantly improving the charge separation in photocatalysis. Moreover, the hollow structure and the vast number of exposed groups on the surface of PPBM-H help to improve the mass transfer efficiency and pollutant adsorption performance in wastewater treatment. In addition, PPBM-H can generate H₂O₂ by in-situ activation of BiFeO₃/MoS₂ for photo-Fenton catalysis, enabling Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺ recycling. Also, PPBM-H can produce piezoelectric polarisation under ultrasonic excitation, which can further enhance the efficiency of electron/hole separation and transfer, and induce the generation of active free radicals. Owing to its wonderful self-cleaning effect, the PPBM-H has good mechanical strength (2.95 Mpa), hydrophilicity (11.6°), water flux (1248 L·m^-2·h^-1), BSA rejection (98.8 %), and exhibits distinguished photocatalytic filtration efficiencies (99.5 % tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and 99.9 % methyl orange (MO) within 60 min), piezo-photocatalysis (99.2 % TCH within 2 h), disinfection performance for Escherichia coli (E. coli) (100 %, within 60 min).

Concurrent fabrication of ZnO-ZnFe2O4 hybrid nanocomposite for enhancing photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and its bacterial inactivation

In this research, we looked at how heterostructure fabrication, phase ratio, and crystalline nature affect the photocatalytic activity of ZnO/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocomposite for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye when exposed to sunlight irradiation. Magnetic ZnO/ZnFe₂O₄ hybrid nanocomposites were made using a co-precipitation technique. The synthesized hybrid nanocomposite were analyzed using a variety of characterization techniques to understand more about their chemical, crystallinity, and photoactive characteristics. Using UV-Visible spectra, the absorption and photocatalytic efficiency of photocatalysts were investigated. By using XPS and FTIR measurements, the surface composition and functionalization of the produced nanocomposite were observed. The synthesized ZnO/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocomposites exhibit irregular morphologies, and the average crystallite size is about 30 nm, by the findings of the transmission electron microscope. When exposed to solar light for 90 min, the prepared photocatalysts exceed ZnO nanoparticles in terms of photocatalytic performance by more than 45%. Pseudo-first-order kinetics governs the adsorption of RhB onto nanocomposite surfaces. Finally, the ZnO/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocomposites were employed for antibacterial treatments against the waterborne pathogens Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus). The outcomes demonstrated that the optimal disinfection efficiency against E. coli and S. aureus germs were 98.6 and 97.4%, respectively, associated with superior cycling durability. Therefore, this work offers a simple and rapid approach to the development of hybrid nanocomposites that could be used to create various photocatalytic and optical materials.

Na-doped g-C3N4/NiO 2D/2D laminated p-n heterojunction nanosheets toward optimized photocatalytic performance

Na-doped g-C₃N₄/NiO 2D/2D laminated p-n heterojunction nanosheets are fabricated by facile calcination and hydrothermal methods. The average thickness of g-C₃N₄ nanosheets is ∼1.388 nm, and the ultrathin structure allows for a high specific surface area and enough surface active sites, increasing the surface reactivity. The flower ball like structure of NiO increases the light utilization rate. Na doping accelerates charge separation and transport by increasing the electrical conductivity. The g-C₃N₄ and NiO nanosheets form 2D/2D laminated structures, and the spherical structure can suppress the agglomeration of 2D nanosheets, which could realize adequate interface contact and form efficient p-n heterojunctions. The p-n heterostructure builds an internal electric field to accelerate spatial charge separation. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency for ciprofloxacin and the hydrogen production rate of Na-doped g-C₃N₄/NiO are up to 99.0%, and 2299.32 μmol h^-1 g^-1, respectively, which are several times higher than those of the pristine one. The fabrication strategy for 2D/2D laminated heterojunctions may provide new insights for the preparation of novel laminated photocatalysts with high performance.

Fight for carbon neutrality with state-of-the-art negative carbon emission technologies

After the Industrial Revolution, the ever-increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration has resulted in significant problems for human beings. Nearly all countries in the world are actively taking measures to fight for carbon neutrality. In recent years, negative carbon emission technologies have attracted much attention due to their ability to reduce or recycle excess CO2 in the atmosphere. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art negative carbon emission technologies, from the artificial enhancement of natural carbon sink technology to the physical, chemical, or biological methods for carbon capture, as well as CO2 utilization and conversion. Finally, we expound on the challenges and outlook for improving negative carbon emission technology to accelerate the pace of achieving carbon neutrality.

Microenvironment engineering of supported metal nanoparticles for chemoselective hydrogenation

Selective hydrogenation with supported metal catalysts widely used in the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals often faces a trade-off between activity and selectivity, mainly due to the inability to adjust one factor of the active sites without affecting other factors. In order to solve this bottleneck problem, the modulation of the microenvironment of active sites has attracted more and more attention, inspired by the collaborative catalytic mode of enzymes. In this perspective, we aim to summarize recent advances in the regulation of the microenvironment surrounding supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) using porous materials enriched with organic functional groups. Insights on how the microenvironment induces the enrichment, oriented adsorption and activation of substrates through non-covalent interaction and thus determines the hydrogenation activity and selectivity will be particularly discussed. Finally, a brief summary will be provided, and challenges together with a perspective in microenvironment engineering will be proposed.

Highly dispersed Ag and g-C3N4 quantum dots co-decorated 3D hierarchical Fe3O4 hollow microspheres for solar-light-driven pharmaceutical pollutants degradation in natural water matrix

The efficient removal of pharmaceutical pollutants presents a great challenge for the conventional sewage treatment system. Herein, we document the nanosheets assembled 3D hierarchical Fe₃O₄ hollow microspheres co-modified by Ag and g-C₃N₄ quantum dots (Ag/CNQDs@Fe₃O₄) for efficient degradation of two classic anticancer drugs, i.e., capecitabine (CAP) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FLU) under visible light in 1 h. Benefiting from the unique hierarchically hollow structure, the intrinsic strengths of each component and their interactions, synergistic reinforcing mechanism is constructed, furnishing more accessible reactive places, promoting the diffusion of pollutants/oxidants, improving charge separation ability, and raising light utilization rate. Consequently, Ag/CNQDs@Fe₃O₄ can not only show superior photocatalytic properties, but also greatly boost PMS activation to yield sufficient oxidative radicals. More notably, the studied system also features excellent stability and strong tolerance to real water samples, and maintains appreciable performance even under natural sunlight illumination. The predominant active species, possible ADs decomposition pathways, and underlying reaction mechanism for the Ag/CNQDs@Fe₃O₄/PMS/vis system are thoroughly explored. This work presents significant advancement in enabling an integrated technology of PMS and photocatalysis to realize its great potential in environment restoration.

Liquid Metal Nanoparticles as a Highly Efficient Photoinitiator to Develop Multifunctional Hydrogel Composites

Liquid metal (LM) composites are a class of emerging soft multifunctional materials that are promising for a variety of applications, yet the chemistry properties of LM have not been fully understood. Here, we report that LM nanoparticles can directly perform as a photoinitiator for radical polymerization and the in situ development of highly tough and multifunctional LM hydrogel composites. It is revealed that the photocatalytic activity of LM nanoparticles originates from the oxide layer on LM. Significantly, positively charged metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles are used to stabilize LM nanoparticles in aqueous solutions, where the MOF can anchor on the surface of LM nanoparticles by electrostatic interaction while helping to preserve the unshielded oxide layer, therefore realizing the highly efficient photoinitiation and polymerization. The LM nanoparticle-initiated photopolymerization is shown to develop hydrogel composites featuring excellent stretchability, stimuli responsiveness, and sustained photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic polymerization initiated by LM nanoparticles not only deepens the understanding on the semiconductor properties of the oxide skin on LM but also broadens the application scenarios of multifunctional LM/polymer composites in smart materials, wearable electronics, and soft robotics.

ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS: A GLANCE AT VARIOUS METHODOLOGIES FOR DIFFERENT FRAMEWORKS

Abstract:

Asymmetric reactions have made a significant advancement over the past few decades and involved the production of enantiomerically pure molecules using enantioselective organocatalysis, chiral auxiliaries/substrates, and reagents via controlling the absolute stereochemistry. The laboratory synthesis from an enantiomerically impure starting material gives a combination of enantiomers which are difficult to separate for chemists in the fields of medicine, chromatography, pharmacology, asymmetric synthesis, studies of structure-function relationships of proteins, life sciences and mechanistic studies. This challenging step of separation can be avoided by the use of asymmetric synthesis. Using pharmacologically relevant scaffolds/pharmacophores, the drug designing can also be achieved using asymmetric synthesis to synthesize receptor specific pharmacologically active chiral molecules. This approach can be used to synthesize asymmetric molecules from wide variety of reactants using specific asymmetric conditions which is also beneficial for environment due to less usage and discharge of chemicals into the environment. So, in this review, we have focused on the inclusive collation of diverse mechanisms in this area, to encourage auxiliary studies of asymmetric reactions to develop selective, efficient, environment-friendly and high yielding advanced processes in asymmetric reactions.

Designer Gold-Framed Palladium Nanocubes for Plasmon-Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Ethanol

Surface plasmon of coinage metal nanostructures has been employed as a powerful route in boosting the performances in heterogenous catalysis. Development of efficient plasmonic nanocatalysts with high catalytic performance and efficient light harvesting properties is of vital importance. Herein, we rationally designed and synthesized a plasmonic nanocatalyst composed of Au-framed Pd nanocubes by an Ag(I)-assisted seed-mediated growth method. In the synthesis, the incorporation of Ag(I) suppresses the reduction of Au on the {100} surface of cubic Pd seeds and leads to the formation of Au nanoframes on the Pd nanocubes. The unique Au-framed Pd nanocubes can integrate the superior electrocatalytic of Pd and the outstanding plasmonic properties of Au. Thus, these nanostructures were employed as plasmonic nanocatalysts for plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol with improved stability.

Porous organic polymers for light-driven organic transformations

As a new generation of porous materials, porous organic polymers (POPs), have recently emerged as a powerful platform of heterogeneous photocatalysis. POPs are constructed using extensive organic synthesis methodologies, with various functional organic units being connected via high-energy covalent bonds. This review systematically presents the recent advances in POPs for visible-light driven organic transformations. Herein, we firstly summarize the common construction strategies for POP-based photocatalysts based on two major approaches: pre-design and post-modification; secondly, we categorize and summarize the synthesis methods and organic reaction types for constructing various types of POPs. We then classify and introduce the specific reactions of current light-driven POP-mediated organic transformations. Finally, we outline the current state of development and the problems faced in light-driven organic transformations by POPs, and we present some perspectives to motivate the reader to explore solutions to these problems and confront the present challenges in the development process.

Enhancing the antifouling and rejection properties of PVDF membrane by Ag3PO4-GO modification

Ultrafiltration is an environmentally friendly water treatment technology, but membrane fouling significantly impacts membrane performance and service life. Photocatalytic modification of membrane is regarded as an effective way for membrane fouling control. In this study, graphite oxide (GO), Ag₃PO₄ and Ag₃PO₄-GO nanomaterials were applied in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes modification, and the membranes was denoted as P-GO, P-AgP and P-AgP@GO, respectively. Filtration of humic acid (HA) at different operating conditions was adopted in evaluation of membrane performance. Among them, P-AgP@GO had the best permeation, rejection and antifouling performances, and could maintain excellent properties when operation conditions (HA concentration, operation pressure, pH and ionic strength) were changed. Furthermore, the effect of photocatalysis on the self-cleaning performance and its mechanism were revealed. The overall performance of P-AgP@GO could be enhanced by visible light irradiation, and extending the visible illumination time during the filtration was conducive to the reusability.

Anisotropic nanomaterials for asymmetric synthesis

The production of enantiopure chemicals is an essential part of modern chemical industry. Hence, the emergence of asymmetric catalysis led to dramatic changes in the procedures of chemical synthesis, and now it provides the most advantageous and economically executable solution for large-scale production of chiral chemicals. In recent years, nanostructures have emerged as potential materials for asymmetric synthesis. Indeed, on the one hand, nanomaterials offer great opportunities as catalysts in asymmetric catalysis, due to their tunable absorption, chirality, and unique energy transfer properties; on the other hand, the advantages of the larger surface area, increased number of unsaturated coordination centres, and more accessible active sites open prospects for catalyst encapsulation, partial or complete, in a nanoscale cavity, pore, pocket, or channel leading to alteration of the chemical reactivity through spatial confinement. This review focuses on anisotropic nanomaterials and considers the state-of-the-art progress in asymmetric synthesis catalysed by 1D, 2D and 3D nanostructures. The discussion comprises three main sections according to the nanostructure dimensionality. We analyze recent advances in materials and structure development, discuss the functional role of the nanomaterials in asymmetric synthesis, chirality, confinement effects, and reported enantioselectivity. Finally, the new opportunities and challenges of anisotropic 1D, 2D, and 3D nanomaterials in asymmetric synthesis, as well as the future prospects and current trends of the design and applications of these materials are analyzed in the Conclusions and outlook section.

Effect of Engineered Biomaterials and Magnetite on Wastewater Treatment: Biogas and Kinetic Evaluation

In this study, the principle of sustaining circular economy is presented as a way of recovering valuable resources from wastewater and utilizing its energy potential via anaerobic digestion (AD) of municipality wastewater. Biostimulation of the AD process was investigated to improve its treatability efficiency, biogas production, and kinetic stability. Addressing this together with agricultural waste such as eggshells (CE), banana peel (PB), and calcined banana peels (BI) were employed and compared to magnetite (Fe₃O₄) as biostimulation additives via 1 L biochemical methane potential tests. With a working volume of 0.8 L (charge with inoculum to substrate ratio of 3:5 v/v) and 1.5 g of the additives, each bioreactor was operated at a mesophilic temperature of 40 °C for 30 days while being compared to a control bioreactor. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) analysis was used to reveal the absorbent’s morphology at high magnification of 10 kx and surface pore size of 20.8 µm. The results showed over 70% biodegradation efficiency in removing the organic contaminants (chemical oxygen demand, color, and turbidity) as well as enhancing the biogas production. Among the setups, the bioreactor with Fe₃O₄ additives was found to be the most efficient, with an average daily biogas production of 40 mL/day and a cumulative yield of 1117 mL/day. The kinetic dynamics were evaluated with the cumulative biogas produced by each bioreactor via the first order modified Gompertz and Chen and Hashimoto kinetic models. The modified Gompertz model was found to be the most reliable, with good predictability.

Metal-Free Catalysis: A Redox-Active Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Microporous Polymer for Selective Visible-Light-Driven CO2 Reduction to CH4

Achieving more than a two-electron photochemical CO₂ reduction process using a metal-free system is quite exciting and challenging, as it needs proper channeling of electrons. In the present study, we report the rational design and synthesis of a redox-active conjugated microporous polymer (CMP), TPA-PQ, by assimilating an electron donor, tris(4-ethynylphenyl)amine (TPA), with an acceptor, phenanthraquinone (PQ). The TPA-PQ shows intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT)-assisted catalytic activity for visible-light-driven photoreduction of CO₂ to CH₄ (yield = 32.2 mmol g^-1) with an impressive rate (2.15 mmol h^-1 g^-1) and high selectivity (>97%). Mechanistic analysis based on experimental results, in situ DRIFTS, and computational studies reveals that the potential of TPA-PQ for catalyzing photoreduction of CO₂ to CH₄ was energetically driven by photoactivated ICT upon surface adsorption of CO₂, wherein adjacent keto groups of PQ unit play a pivotal role. The critical role of ICT for stimulating photocatalysis is further illustrated by synthesizing another redox-active CMP (TEB-PQ), bearing triethynylbenzene (TEB) and PQ, that shows 8-fold lesser activity for photoreduction toward CO₂ to CH₄ (yield = 4.4 mmol g^-1) as compared to TPA-PQ. The results demonstrate a novel concept for CO₂ photoreduction to CH₄ using an efficient, sustainable, and recyclable metal-free robust organic photocatalyst.

Rational design of all-solid-state TiO2-x/Cu/ZnO Z-scheme heterojunction via ALD-assistance for enhanced photocatalytic activity

Poor visible light utilization and charge separation efficiency of TiO₂ restrict its extensive application in the photocatalytic field. Herein, a specific Z-scheme TiO_2-x/Cu/ZnO heterojunction was successfully constructed by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique and spray pyrolysis technology. Benefited from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Cu and Z-scheme heterojunction, the visible light absorption capacity was greatly enhanced. Meanwhile, ZnO nanolayer coating, prepared by ALD technique, protects Cu element to hinder its oxidation, thus enhancing the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Therefore, the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance was significant improved, exhibiting a maximum value of 342.0 µmol·g^-1·h^-1 for the optimal B-T-0.1C-10Z (black TiO₂/0.1Cu/10 nm ZnO) sample without any noble-metal cocatalyst, which is higher than pure TiO₂ (310.7 µmol·g^-1·h^-1, with 3 wt% Pt) synthesized by spray pyrolysis method under equal conditions. In addition, a possible mechanism for the enhanced performance was briefly discussed based on the experimental results.

High special surface area and "warm light" responsive ZnO: Synthesis mechanism, application and optimization

In this study, a new series of zinc oxide (ZnO) with high specific surface area and narrow energy band gap are prepared using a facile microwave-induced method. The corresponding formation mechanism is also discussed for the first time. Due to the introduction of C, these ZnO can be excited by long wave temperature light without harmful short wave radiation, and play an efficient photocatalytic activity. This valuable property fundamentally improves the biological safety of its photocatalytic application. Herein, taking teeth whitening as an example, the photocatalytic performance of ZnO is evaluated. The “pure” yellow light-emitting diode (PYLED) with high biological safety is used as the excitation source. It is found that this method could effectively remove pigment on the tooth surface through physical adsorption. In addition, these ZnO could generate active oxygen to degrade the pigment on the tooth surface under the irradiation of yellow light. Some further optimization of these “warm light” responsive ZnO is also discussed in this systematical study, which could open up new opportunities in biomedical field.

Preparation and Chiral Applications of Optically Active Polyamides

Chirality is omnipresent in nature and plays vital roles in living organism, and has become a hot research topic across multidisciplinary fields including chemistry, biology, physics, and material science. Meanwhile, polyamides constitute an important class of polymers and have received significant attention owing to their outstanding properties and wide-ranging applications in many areas. Judiciously introducing chirality into polyamides will undoubtedly obtain attractive chiral polymers, namely, optically active polyamides. This review describes the preparation methods of chiral polyamides, including solution polycondensation, interfacial polycondensation, ring-open polymerization, and others; the newly emerging categories of chiral polyamides, i.e., helical polyamides, chiral polyamide-imides, are also presented. The applications of optically active polyamides in chiral research fields including asymmetric catalysis, membrane separation, and enantioselective crystallization are also summarized. In addition, current challenges in chiral polyamides are further presented and future perspectives in the field are proposed.

Utilization of Eco-Friendly Waste Generated Nanomaterials in Water-Based Drilling Fluids; State of the Art Review

An important aspect of hydrocarbon drilling is the usage of drilling fluids, which remove drill cuttings and stabilize the wellbore to provide better filtration. To stabilize these properties, several additives are used in drilling fluids that provide satisfactory rheological and filtration properties. However, commonly used additives are environmentally hazardous; when drilling fluids are disposed after drilling operations, they are discarded with the drill cuttings and additives into water sources and causes unwanted pollution. Therefore, these additives should be substituted with additives that are environmental friendly and provide superior performance. In this regard, biodegradable additives are required for future research. This review investigates the role of various bio-wastes as potential additives to be used in water-based drilling fluids. Furthermore, utilization of these waste-derived nanomaterials is summarized for rheology and lubricity tests. Finally, sufficient rheological and filtration examinations were carried out on water-based drilling fluids to evaluate the effect of wastes as additives on the performance of drilling fluids.

Heterostructured Cu2O-Au nanowire as a dual-functional nanocomposite for environmental pollutant degradation and hydrogen peroxide sensing

Materials engineering is generally regarded as one of the most effective methods in the construction of photocatalysts, but it still faces many challenges. In this context, we designed and prepared a three-dimensional (3D) heterostructure of nanowires (NWs) formed by Cu₂O core and an Au shell. The Cu₂O-Au NWs not only show fine photocatalytic ability but also proved to have Fenton-like chemical properties and can be used as a hydrogen peroxide sensor. Moreover, this heterostructure realizes an integration of catalytic efficiency, retrievability, and versatility. In further consideration of the facile preparation process and low-cost material source of the structure, the Cu₂O-Au NWs show a promising application prospect in the field of multifunctional photocatalysts.

Prospects of Synthesized Magnetic TiO2-Based Membranes for Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Global accessibility to clean water has stressed the need to develop advanced technologies for the removal of toxic organic and inorganic pollutants and pathogens from wastewater to meet stringent discharge water quality limits. Conventionally, the high separation efficiencies, relative low costs, small footprint, and ease of operation associated with integrated photocatalytic-membrane (IPM) technologies are gaining an all-inclusive attention. Conversely, photocatalysis and membrane technologies face some degree of setbacks, which limit their worldwide application in wastewater settings for the treatment of emerging contaminants. Therefore, this review elucidated titanium dioxide (TiO₂), based on its unique properties (low cost, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and high chemical stability), to have great potential in engineering photocatalytic-based membranes for reclamation of wastewater for re-use. The environmental pathway of TiO₂ nanoparticles, membranes and configuration types, modification process, characteristics, and applications of IPMs in water settings are discussed. Future research and prospects of magnetized TiO₂-based membrane technology is highlighted as a viable water purification technology to mitigate fouling in the membrane process and photocatalyst recoverability. In addition, exploring life cycle assessment research would also aid in utilizing the concept and pressing for large-scale application of this technology.

Photocatalytic purification of contaminated air in intensive care units by ZnSn(OH)6 nanoparticles

The air purification in intensive care units (ICU) involving the removal of smog and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), disinfection, and sterilization are closely linked to important health issues. The environmental photocatalysis technology that could decompose gaseous pollutants into small molecular inorganic substances provides the potential solution. In a chamber of 30-m³ simulated ICU, photocatalytic purifier with ZnSn(OH)₆ nanoparticles photocatalyst is set up to treat 10 VOCs with concentration below 2 ppm. Compared with regular purifiers of plasma and activated carbon, the present photocatalytic purifier can completely eliminate 10 varieties of low-concentration irritating VOCs without CO production. The continuous tests show that loading of 600 g ZnSn(OH)₆ has capacity to treat large volumes of VOCs and remains high removal efficiencies up to 600-h operation. The results suggest that the photocatalytic purifier could be potentially applied for the treatment of contaminated indoor air particularly ICU. The mechanism of ZnSn(OH)₆ photocatalysis is proposed to interpret the high performance and mineralization of the degradation process.

Nanoengineered chiral Pt-Ir alloys for high-performance enantioselective electrosynthesis

The design of efficient chiral catalysts is of crucial importance since it allows generating enantiomerically pure compounds. Tremendous efforts have been made over the past decades regarding the development of materials with enantioselective properties for various potential applications ranging from sensing to catalysis and separation. Recently, chiral features have been generated in mesoporous metals. Although these monometallic matrices show interesting enantioselectivity, they suffer from rather low stability, constituting an important roadblock for applications. Here, a straightforward strategy to circumvent this limitation by using nanostructured platinum-iridium alloys is presented. These materials can be successfully encoded with chiral information by co-electrodeposition from Pt and Ir salts in the simultaneous presence of a chiral compound and a lyotropic liquid crystal as asymmetric template and mesoporogen, respectively. The alloys enable a remarkable discrimination between chiral compounds and greatly improved enantioselectivity when used for asymmetric electrosynthesis (>95 %ee), combined with high electrochemical stability.

Catalytic enantioselective C(sp3)-H functionalization involving radical intermediates

Recently, with the boosted development of radical chemistry, enantioselective functionalization of C(sp3)-H bonds via a radical pathway has witnessed a renaissance. In principle, two distinct catalytic modes, distinguished by the steps in which the stereochemistry is determined (the radical formation step or the radical functionalization step), can be devised. This Perspective discusses the state-of-the-art in the area of catalytic enantioselective C(sp3)-H functionalization involving radical intermediates as well as future challenges and opportunities.
