Recent Advances in 2D Superconductors

Large-Area Epitaxial Growth of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Over the past decade, research on atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has expanded rapidly due to their unique properties such as high carrier mobility, significant excitonic effects, and strong spin-orbit couplings. Considerable attention from both scientific and industrial communities has fully fueled the exploration of TMDs toward practical applications. Proposed scenarios, such as ultrascaled transistors, on-chip photonics, flexible optoelectronics, and efficient electrocatalysis, critically depend on the scalable production of large-area TMD films. Correspondingly, substantial efforts have been devoted to refining the synthesizing methodology of 2D TMDs, which brought the field to a stage that necessitates a comprehensive summary. In this Review, we give a systematic overview of the basic designs and significant advancements in large-area epitaxial growth of TMDs. We first sketch out their fundamental structures and diverse properties. Subsequent discussion encompasses the state-of-the-art wafer-scale production designs, single-crystal epitaxial strategies, and techniques for structure modification and postprocessing. Additionally, we highlight the future directions for application-driven material fabrication and persistent challenges, aiming to inspire ongoing exploration along a revolution in the modern semiconductor industry.

Pressure-Sensitive Multiple Superconducting Phases and Their Structural Origin in Van der Waals HfS_{2} Up to 160 GPa

Superconductivity has been observed in many insulating transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) under pressure. However, the origin of superconductivity remains elusive due to the lack of studies on their structures at low temperatures. Here, we report the observation of a high-T_{c} superconducting state (SC-I phase) coexisting with other superconducting states in a compressed 1T-HfS_{2} crystal up to approximately 160 GPa. In situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction results exclude the presence of decomposed sulfur and confirm two structural phase transitions at room temperature, as well as an additional transition at low temperature, which contribute to the emergence of multiple superconducting states. The SC-I phase exhibits an unsaturated T_{c} of 16.4 K at 158 GPa, and demonstrates the highest upper critical field among the bulk TMDCs, μ_{0}H_{c2}(0)≈29.7  T for a T_{c}∼15.2  K at 147 GPa, exceeding the weak-coupling Pauli limit. These results reveal abundant SC properties together with sensitive structures in compressed HfS_{2}, and thereby extend our understanding on TMDCs' superconductivity.

Advancing Superconductivity with Interface Engineering

The development of superconducting materials has attracted significant attention not only for their improved performance, such as high transition temperature (TC), but also for the exploration of their underlying physical mechanisms. Recently, considerable efforts have been focused on interfaces of materials, a distinct category capable of inducing superconductivity at non-superconducting material interfaces or augmenting the TC at the interface between a superconducting material and a non-superconducting material. Here, two distinct types of interfaces along with their unique characteristics are reviewed: interfacial superconductivity and interface-enhanced superconductivity, with a focus on the crucial factors and potential mechanisms responsible for enhancing superconducting performance. A series of materials systems is discussed, encompassing both historical developments and recent progress from the perspectives of technical innovations and the exploration of new material classes. The overarching goal is to illuminate pathways toward achieving high TC, expanding the potential of superconducting parameters across interfaces, and propelling superconductivity research toward practical, high-temperature applications.

Tunable Exciton Polaritons in Band-Gap Engineered Hexagonal Boron Nitride

We show that hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a two-dimensional insulator, when subjected to an external superlattice potential forms a paradigm for electrostatically tunable excitons in the near- and mid-ultraviolet (UV). With a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we see that the imposed potential has three consequences: (i) It renormalizes the effective mass tensor, leading to anisotropic effective masses. (ii) It renormalizes the band gap, eventually reducing it. (iii) It reduces the exciton binding energies. All these consequences depend on a single dimensionless parameter, which includes the product of strength of the external potential with its period. In addition to the excitonic energy levels, we compute the optical conductivity along two orthogonal directions and from it the absorption spectrum. The results for the latter show that our system is able to mimic a grid polarizer. These characteristics make one-dimensional hBN superlattices a viable and meaningful platform for fine-tuned polaritonics in the UV to visible spectral range.

Anomalous Phonon Behavior and Tunable Exciton Emissions: Insights into Pressure-Driven Dynamics in Silicon Phosphide

IV-V two-dimensional materials have emerged as key contenders for polarization-sensitive and angle-resolved devices, given their inherent anisotropic physical properties. While these materials exhibit intriguing high-pressure quasi-particle behavior and phase transition, the evolution of quasi-particles and their interactions under external pressure remain elusive. Here, employing a diamond anvil cell and spectroscopic measurements coupled with first-principles calculations, we unveil rarely observed pressure-induced phonon-phonon coupling in layered SiP flakes. This coupling manifests as an anomalous phonon hardening behavior for the A1 mode within a broad wavenumber phonon softening region. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effective tuning of exciton emissions in SiP flakes under pressure, revealing a remarkable 63% enhancement in the degree of polarization (DOP) within the pressure range of 0-3.5 GPa. These findings contribute to our understanding of high-pressure phonon evolution in SiP materials and offer a strategic approach to manipulate the anisotropic performance of in-plane anisotropic 2D materials.

Enhancement of superconductivity in Zr2S2C arising from phonon softening on transition from bulk to monolayer

We report a new compound, Zr2S2C, belonging to the transition metal carbo-chalcogenide (TMCC) family. Through first-principles calculations, our analysis of phonon dispersion spectra indicates that the compound is dynamically stable in both bulk and monolayer forms. We systematically investigated the electronic structure, phonon dispersion, and electron-phonon coupling (EPC) driven superconducting properties in bulk and monolayer Zr2S2C. The results demonstrate the metallic character of bulk Zr2S2C, with a weak EPC strength (λ) of 0.41 and superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of ∼3 K. The monolayer Zr2S2C has an enhancedλof 0.62 andTcof ∼6.4 K. The increasedλvalue in the monolayer results from the softening of the acoustic phonon mode. We found that when biaxial strain is applied, the low energy acoustic phonon mode in monolayer becomes even softer. This softening leads to a transformation of the Zr2S2C monolayer from its initial weak coupling state (λ= 0.62) to a strongly coupled state, resulting in an increasedλvalue of 1.33. Consequently, the superconducting critical temperature experiences a twofold increase. These findings provide a theoretical framework for further exploration of the layered two-dimensional TMCC family, in addition to offering valuable insights.

Strain-induced ferroelectric polarization reversal without undergoing geometric inversion in blue SiSe monolayer

Ferroelectricity in two-dimensional (2D) systems generally arises from phonons and has been widely investigated. On the contrary, electronic ferroelectricity in 2D systems has been rarely studied. Using first-principles calculations, the ferroelectric behavior of the buckled blue SiSe monolayer under strain are explored. It is found that the direction of the out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization can be reversed by applying an in-plane strain. And such polarization switching is realized without undergoing geometric inversion. Besides, the strain-triggered polarization reversal emerges in both biaxial and uniaxial strain cases, indicating it is an intrinsic feature of such a system. Further analysis shows that the polarization switching is the result of the reversal of the magnitudes of the positive and negative charge center vectors. And the variation of buckling is found to play an important role, which results in the switch. Moreover, a non-monotonic variation of band gap with strain is revealed. Our findings throws light on the investigation of novel electronic ferroelectric systems.

Superhard and Superconducting Bilayer Borophene

Two-dimensional superconductors, especially the covalent metals such as borophene, have received significant attention due to their new fundamental physics, as well as potential applications. Furthermore, the bilayer borophene has recently ignited interest due to its high stability and versatile properties. Here, the mechanical and superconducting properties of bilayer-δ6 borophene are explored by means of first-principles computations and anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg analytics. We find that the coexistence of strong covalent bonds and delocalized metallic bonds endows this structure with remarkable mechanical properties (maximum 2D-Young's modulus of ~570 N/m) and superconductivity with a critical temperature of ~20 K. Moreover, the superconducting critical temperature of this structure can be further boosted to ~46 K by applied strain, which is the highest value known among all borophenes or two-dimensional elemental materials.

Excitonic Thermalization Bottleneck in Twisted TMD Heterostructures

Twisted van der Waals heterostructures show intriguing interface exciton physics, including hybridization effects and emergence of moiré potentials. Recent experiments have revealed that moiré-trapped excitons exhibit remarkable dynamics, where excited states show lifetimes that are several orders of magnitude longer than in monolayers. The origin of this behavior is still under debate. Based on a microscopic many-particle approach, we investigate the phonon-driven relaxation cascade of nonequilibrium moiré excitons in the exemplary MoSe2-WSe2 heterostructure. We track exciton relaxation pathways across different moiré mini-bands and identify the phonon-scattering channels assisting the spatial redistribution of excitons into low-energy pockets of the moiré potential. We unravel a phonon bottleneck in the flat band structure at low twist angles preventing excitons from fully thermalizing into the lowest state, explaining the measured enhanced emission intensity and lifetime of excited moiré excitons. Overall, our work provides important insights into exciton relaxation dynamics in flat-band exciton materials.

Fundamental Limits of Few-Layer NbSe2 Microbolometers at Terahertz Frequencies

The rapid development of infrared spectroscopy, observational astronomy, and scanning near-field microscopy has been enabled by the emergence of sensitive mid- and far-infrared photodetectors. Superconducting hot-electron bolometers (HEBs), known for their exceptional signal-to-noise ratio and fast photoresponse, play a crucial role in these applications. While superconducting HEBs are traditionally crafted from sputtered thin films such as NbN, the potential of layered van der Waals (vdW) superconductors is untapped at THz frequencies. Here, we introduce superconducting HEBs made from few-layer NbSe2 microwires. By improving the interface between NbSe2 and metal leads, we overcome impedance mismatch with RF readout, enabling large responsivity THz detection (0.13 to 2.5 THz) with a minimal noise equivalent power of 7 pW/ H z and nanosecond-range response time. Our work highlights NbSe2 as a promising platform for HEB technology and presents a reliable vdW assembly protocol for custom bolometer production.

Uniaxial Strain-Induced Stacking Order Change in Trilayer Graphene

The layer stacking order in two-dimensional heterostructures, like graphene, affects their physical properties and potential applications. Trilayer graphene, specifically ABC-trilayer graphene, has captured significant interest due to its potential for correlated electronic states. However, achieving a stable ABC arrangement is challenging due to its lower thermodynamic stability compared to the more stable ABA stacking. Despite recent advancements in obtaining ABC graphene through external perturbations, such as strain, the stacking transition mechanism remains insufficiently explored. In this study, we unveil a universal mechanism to achieve ABC stacking, applicable for understanding ABA to ABC stacking changes induced by any mechanical perturbations. Our approach is based on a novel strain engineering technique that induces interlayer slippage and results in the formation of stable ABC domains. We investigate the underlying interfacial mechanisms of this stacking change through computational simulations and experiments. Our findings demonstrate a highly anisotropic and significant transformation of ABA stacking to large and stable ABC domains facilitated by interlayer slippage. Through atomistic simulations and local energy analysis, we systematically demonstrate the mechanism for this stacking transition, that is dependent on specific loading orientation. Understanding such a mechanism allows this material system to be engineered by design compatible with industrial techniques on a device-by-device level. We conduct Raman studies to validate and characterize the formed ABC stacking, highlighting its distinct features compared to the ABA region. Our results contribute to a clearer understanding of the stacking change mechanism and provide a robust and controllable method for achieving stable ABC domains, facilitating their use in developing advanced optoelectronic devices.

Unconventional Charge-Density-Wave Gap in Monolayer NbS2

Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, for a monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenide H-NbS2 grown by molecular beam epitaxy on graphene, we provide unambiguous evidence for a charge density wave (CDW) with a 3 × 3 superstructure, which is not present in bulk NbS2. Local spectroscopy displays a pronounced gap on the order of 20 meV at the Fermi level. Within the gap, low-energy features are present. The gap structure with its low-energy features is at variance with the expectation for a gap opening in the electronic band structure due to a CDW. Instead, comparison with ab initio calculations indicates that the observed gap structure must be attributed to combined electron-phonon quasiparticles. The phonons in question are the elusive amplitude and phase collective modes of the CDW transition. Our findings advance the understanding of CDW mechanisms in 2D materials and their spectroscopic signatures.

First-principles prediction of superconducting properties of monolayer 1T'-WS2 under biaxial tensile strain

High-purity 1T'-WS2 film has been experimentally synthesized [Nature Materials, 20, 1113-1120 (2021)] and theoretically predicted to be a two-dimensional (2D) superconducting material with Dirac cones [arXiv:2301.11425]. In the present work, we further study the superconducting properties of monolayer 1T'-WS2 by applying biaxial tensile strain. It is shown that the superconducting critical temperature Tc firstly increases and then decreases with respect to tensile strains, with the highest superconducting critical temperature Tc of 7.25 K under the biaxial tensile strain of 3%. In particular, we find that Dirac cones also exist in several tensile strained cases. Our studies show that monolayer 1T'-WS2 may provide a good platform for understanding the superconductivity of 2D Dirac materials.

Anisotropic Superconducting Nb2 CTx MXene Processed by Atomic Exchange at the Wafer Scale

Superconductivty has recently been induced in MXenes through surface modification. However, the previous reports have mostly been based on powders or cold-pressed pellets, with no known reports on the intrinsic superconsucting properties of MXenes at the nanoale. Here, it is developed a high-temperature atomic exchange process in NH3 atmosphere which induces superconductivity in either singleflakes or thin films of Nb2 CTx MXene. The exchange process between nitrogen atoms and fluorine, carbon, and oxygen atoms in the MXene lattice and related structural adjustments are studied using both experiments and density functional theory. Using either single-flake or thin-film devices, an anisotropic magnetic response of the 2D superconducting transformation has been successfully revealed. The anisotropic superconductivity is further demonstrated using superconducting thin films uniformly deposited over a 4 in. wafers, which opens up the possibility of scalable MXene-based superconducting devices.

Competing length scales and 2D versus 3D dimensionality in relatively thick superconducting NbN films

Magneto-transport characteristics of 2D and 3D superconducting layers, in particular, temperature and angular dependences of the upper critical field Hc2, are usually considered to be fundamentally different. In the work, using non-local resistance measurements at temperatures near the normal-to-superconducting transition, we probed an effective dimensionality of nm-thick NbN films. It was found that in relatively thick NbN layers, the thicknesses of which varied from 50 to 100 nm, the temperature effect on Hc2 certainly pointed to the three-dimensionality of the samples, while the angular dependence of Hc2 revealed behavior typical for 2D samples. The seeming contradiction is explained by an intriguing interplay of three length scales in the dimensionally confined superconducting films: the thickness, the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length, and the magnetic-field penetration depth. Our results provide new insights into the physics of superconducting films with an extremely large ratio of the London penetration depth to the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length exhibiting simultaneously 3D isotropic superconducting properties and the 2D transport regime.

van der Waals Self-Epitaxial Growth of Inch-Sized Superconducting Niobium Diselenide Films

Ultrathin superconducting films are the basis of superconductor devices. van der Waals (vdW) NbSe2 with noncentrosymmetry exhibits exotic superconductivity and shows promise in superconductor electronic devices. However, the growth of inch-scale NbSe2 films with layer regulation remains a challenge because vdW structural material growth is strongly dependent on the epitaxial guidance of the substrate. Herein, a vdW self-epitaxy strategy is developed to eliminate the substrate driving force in film growth and realize inch-sized NbSe2 film growth with thicknesses from 2.1 to 12.1 nm on arbitrary substrates. The superconducting transition temperature of 5.1 K and superconducting transition width of 0.30 K prove the top homogeneity and quality of superconductivity among all of the synthetic NbSe2 films. Coupled with a large area and substrate compatibility, this work paves the way for developing NbSe2 superconductor electronics.

A novel two-dimensional superconducting Ti layer: density functional theory and electron-beam irradiation

Since the discovery of graphene in an atomic thin layer format, many investigations have been conducted to search for two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, in which 3d-transition metals offer much new physics and great freedom of tunability. In this work, through electron-beam irradiation, we enable the manufacture of a new 2D Ti nanosheet from a suspension of Ti_0.91O₂ nanosheets. In state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT), both empirical and linear response theory predicted that Hubbard U_eff values would be imposed, resulting in unstable phonon dispersion curves. In the end, the newly found Ti monolayer is confirmed to be a non-magnetic superconductor, with a medium level of electron-phonon coupling. The newly established Ti layer is quite robust under strain, and the evolution of local Dirac points in electronic bands is also analyzed in terms of linearity and energetic shift near the Fermi energy. As suggested by the Fermi surface, this metal monolayer experiences an electronic topological transition under strain. Our findings will encourage many more explorations of pure d metal-based isotopic monolayers with diverse structures and open a new playground for 2D superconductors and ultra-thin sensoring components.

Helical Bilayer Nanographenes: Impact of the Helicene Length on the Structural, Electrochemical, Photophysical, and Chiroptical Properties

Helical bilayer nanographenes (HBNGs) are chiral π-extended aromatic compounds consisting of two π-π stacked hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) joined by a helicene, thus resembling van der Waals layered 2D materials. Herein, we compare [9]HBNG, [10]HBNG, and [11]HBNG helical bilayers endowed with [9], [10], and [11]helicenes embedded in their structure, respectively. Interestingly, the helicene length defines the overlapping degree between the two HBCs (number of benzene rings involved in π-π interactions between the two layers), being 26, 14, and 10 benzene rings, respectively, according to the X-ray analysis. Unexpectedly, the electrochemical study shows that the lesser π-extended system [9]HBNG shows the strongest electron donor character, in part by interlayer exchange resonance, and more red-shifted values of emission. Furthermore, [9]HBNG also shows exceptional chiroptical properties with the biggest values of g_abs and g_lum (3.6 × 10^-2) when compared to [10]HBNG and [11]HBNG owing to the fine alignment in the configuration of [9]HBNG between its electric and magnetic dipole transition moments. Furthermore, spectroelectrochemical studies as well as the fluorescence spectroscopy support the aforementioned experimental findings, thus confirming the strong impact of the helicene length on the properties of this new family of bilayer nanographenes.

Emerging 2D Metal Oxides: From Synthesis to Device Integration

2D metal oxides have aroused increasing attention in the field of electronics and optoelectronics due to their intriguing physical properties. In this review, an overview of recent advances on synthesis of 2D metal oxides and their electronic applications is presented. First, the tunable physical properties of 2D metal oxides that relate to the structure (various oxidation-state forms, polymorphism, etc.), crystallinity and defects (anisotropy, point defects, and grain boundary), and thickness (quantum confinement effect, interfacial effect, etc.) are discussed. Then, advanced synthesis methods for 2D metal oxides besides mechanical exfoliation are introduced and classified into solution process, vapor-phase deposition, and native oxidation on a metal source. Later, the various roles of 2D metal oxides in widespread applications, i.e., transistors, inverters, photodetectors, piezotronics, memristors, and potential applications (solar cell, spintronics, and superconducting devices) are discussed. Finally, an outlook of existing challenges and future opportunities in 2D metal oxides is proposed.

A Superconducting Micro-Magnetometer for Quantum Vortex in Superconducting Nanoflakes

Superconducting quantum interferometer device (SQUID) plays a key role in understanding electromagnetic properties and emergent phenomena in quantum materials. The technological appeal of SQUID is that its detection accuracy for the electromagnetic signal can precisely reach the quantum level of a single magnetic flux. However, conventional SQUID techniques normally can only be applied to a bulky sample and do not have the capability to probe the magnetic properties of micro-scale samples with small magnetic signals. Herein, it is demonstrated that, based on a specially designed superconducting nano-hole array, the contactless detection of magnetic properties and quantized vortices in micro-sized superconducting nanoflakes is realized. An anomalous hysteresis loop and a suppression of Little-Parks oscillation are observed in the detected magnetoresistance signal, which originates from the disordered distribution of the pinned vortices in Bi₂ Sr₂ CaCu₂ O_8+δ . Therefore, the density of pinning centers of the quantized vortices on such micro-sized superconducting samples can be quantitatively evaluated, which is technically inaccessible for conventional SQUID detection. The superconducting micro-magnetometer provides a new approach to exploring mesoscopic electromagnetic phenomena of quantum materials.

Analysis of the Scale of Global Human Needs and Opportunities for Sustainable Catalytic Technologies

We analyzed the enormous scale of global human needs, their carbon footprint, and how they are connected to energy availability. We established that most challenges related to resource security and sustainability can be solved by providing distributed, affordable, and clean energy. Catalyzed chemical transformations powered by renewable electricity are emerging successor technologies that have the potential to replace fossil fuels without sacrificing the wellbeing of humans. We highlighted the technical, economic, and societal advantages and drawbacks of short- to medium-term decarbonization solutions to gauge their practicability, economic feasibility, and likelihood for widespread acceptance on a global scale. We detailed catalysis solutions that enhance sustainability, along with strategies for catalyst and process development, frontiers, challenges, and limitations, and emphasized the need for planetary stewardship. Electrocatalytic processes enable the production of solar fuels and commodity chemicals that address universal issues of the water, energy and food security nexus, clothing, the building sector, heating and cooling, transportation, information and communication technology, chemicals, consumer goods and services, and healthcare, toward providing global resource security and sustainability and enhancing environmental and social justice.

A New, Thorough Look on Unusual and Neglected Group III-VI Compounds Toward Novel Perusals

The attention on group III-VI compounds in the last decades has been centered on the optoelectronic properties of indium and gallium chalcogenides. These outstanding properties are leading to novel advancements in terms of fundamental and applied science. One of the advantages of these compounds is to present laminated structures, which can be exfoliated down to monolayers. Despite the large knowledge gathered toward indium and gallium chalcogenides, the family of the group III-VI compounds embraces several other noncommon compounds formed by the other group III elements. These compounds present various crystal lattices, among which a great deal is offered from layered structures. Studies on aluminium chalcogenides show interesting potential as anodes in batteries and as semiconductors. Thallium (Tl), which is commonly present in the +1 oxidation state, is one of the key components in ternary chalcogenides. However, binary Tl-Q (Q = S, Se, Te) systems and derived films are still studied for their semiconducting and thermoelectric properties. This review aims to summarize the biggest features of these unusual materials and to shed some new light on them with the perspective that in the future, novel studies can revive these compounds in order to give rise to a new generation of technology.

Controllable growth of wafer-scale monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides ternary alloys with tunable band gap

The tuning of band gap is very important for the application of two-dimensional (2D) materials in optoelectronic devices. Alloying of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is an important way to tune the wide band gap. In this study, we report a multi-step vapor deposition method to grow monolayer TMDC ternary alloy films with wafer scale, including Mo_1-xW_xS₂, Mo_1-xW_xSe₂and MoS_2xSe_2(1-x), which are accurately controllable in the elemental proportion (xis from 0 to 1). The band gap of the three 2D ternary alloy materials are continuously tuned for the whole range of metal and chalcogen compositions. The metal compositions are controlled by the as-deposited thickness. Raman, photoluminescence, elemental maps and TEM show the high spatial homogeneity in the compositions and optical properties across the whole wafer. The band gap can be continuously tuned from 1.86 to 1.99 eV for Mo_1-xW_xS₂, 1.56 to 1.65 eV for Mo_1-xW_xSe₂, 1.56 to 1.86 eV for MoS_2xSe_2(1-x). Electrical transport measurements indicate that Mo_1-xW_xS₂and MoS_2xSe_2(1-x)monolayers shown-type semiconductor behaviors, and the carrier types of Mo_1-xW_xSe₂can be tuned asn-type, bipolar andp-type. Moreover, this control process can be easily generalized to other 2D alloy films, even to quaternary or multi-element alloy materials. Our study presents a promising route for the preparation of large-scale homogeneous monolayer TMDC alloys and the application for future functional devices.

Tuning lower dimensional superconductivity with hybridization at a superconducting-semiconducting interface

The influence of interface electronic structure is vital to control lower dimensional superconductivity and its applications to gated superconducting electronics, and superconducting layered heterostructures. Lower dimensional superconductors are typically synthesized on insulating substrates to reduce interfacial driven effects that destroy superconductivity and delocalize the confined wavefunction. Here, we demonstrate that the hybrid electronic structure formed at the interface between a lead film and a semiconducting and highly anisotropic black phosphorus substrate significantly renormalizes the superconductivity in the lead film. Using ultra-low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we characterize the renormalization of lead’s quantum well states, its superconducting gap, and its vortex structure which show strong anisotropic characteristics. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the renormalization of superconductivity is driven by hybridization at the interface which modifies the confinement potential and imprints the anisotropic characteristics of the semiconductor substrate on selected regions of the Fermi surface of lead. Using an analytical model, we link the modulated superconductivity to an anisotropy that selectively tunes the superconducting order parameter in reciprocal space. These results illustrate that interfacial hybridization can be used to tune superconductivity in quantum technologies based on lower dimensional superconducting electronics.

Lower-dimensional superconductors are typically synthesized on insulating substrates. Here, the authors find that the hybrid electronic structure formed at the interface between a lead film and a semiconducting black phosphorus substrate significantly renormalizes the superconductivity in the lead film.

An Improved Smart Meta-Superconductor MgB2

Increasing and improving the critical transition temperature (TC), current density (JC) and the Meissner effect (HC) of conventional superconductors are the most important problems in superconductivity research, but progress has been slow for many years. In this study, by introducing the p-n junction nanostructured electroluminescent inhomogeneous phase with a red wavelength to realize energy injection, we found the improved property of smart meta-superconductors MgB2, the critical transition temperature TC increases by 0.8 K, the current density JC increases by 37%, and the diamagnetism of the Meissner effect HC also significantly improved, compared with pure MgB2. Compared with the previous yttrium oxide inhomogeneous phase, the p-n junction has a higher luminescence intensity, a longer stable life and simpler external field requirements. The coupling between superconducting electrons and surface plasmon polaritons may be explained by this phenomenon. The realization of smart meta-superconductor by the electroluminescent inhomogeneous phase provides a new way to improve the performance of superconductors.

Superconductivity 2022

Superconductivity in metals and alloys, i.e., conventional superconductivity, has seen many new developments in recent years, leading to a renewed interest in the principles of superconductivity and the search for new materials. The most striking discoveries include the near-room-temperature superconductivity in metal hydrides (LaH10) under pressure, the extreme stability of superconductivity in NbTi up to 261 GPa pressure, the discovery of high-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductor materials, and the machine learning prediction of new superconducting materials. Other interesting research concerns the properties of 2D superconductors, topological superconductors, e.g., in hybrid systems, and the use of nanotechnology to create nanowires and nanostructures with new properties. Furthermore, and most importantly, the drive from new accelerator and fusion reactors for stronger superconducting magnets has lead to improved cable materials, showing the highest critical current densities ever. Thus, this Special Issue aims to bring together a collection of papers reflecting the present activity in this field.

A Universally EDTA-Assisted Synthesis of Polytypic Bismuth Telluride Nanoplates with a Size-Dependent Enhancement of Tumor Radiosensitivity and Metabolism In Vivo

Bismuth telluride (Bi₂Te₃) is an available thermoelectric material with the lowest band gap among bismuth chalcogenides, revealing a broad application in photocatalysis. Unfortunately, its size and morphology related to a radio-catalysis property have rarely been explored. Herein, an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-assisted hydrothermal strategy was introduced to synthesize polytypic Bi₂Te₃ nanoplates (BT NPs) that exhibit size-dependent radio-sensitization and metabolism characteristics in vivo. By simply varying the molar ratio of EDTA/Bi³⁺ during the reaction, BT NPs with different sizes and morphologies were obtained. EDTA acting as chelating agent and "capping" agent contributed to the homogeneous growth of BT NPs by eliminating dangling bonds and reducing the surface energy of different facets. Further analyzing the size-dependent radio-sensitization mechanism, larger-sized BT NPs generated holes that preferentially catalyzed the conversion of OH^- to ·OH when irradiated with X-rays, while the smaller-sized BT NPs exhibited faster decay kinetics producing higher ¹O₂ levels to enhance radiotherapy effects. A metabolomic analysis revealed that larger-sized BT NPs were oxidized into Bi(O_x) in the liver via a citrate cycle pathway, whereas smaller-sized BT NPs accumulated in the kidney and were excreted in urine in the form of ions by regulating the metabolism of glutamate. In a cervical cancer model, BT NPs combined with X-ray irradiation significantly antagonized tumor suppression through the promotion of apoptosis in tumor cells. Consequently, in addition to providing a prospect of BT NPs as an efficient radio-sensitizer to boost the tumor radiosensitivity, we put forth a strategy that can be universally applied in synthesizing metal chalcogenides for catalysis-promoted radiotherapy.

Research Progress of FeSe-based Superconductors Containing Ammonia/Organic Molecules Intercalation

As an important part of Fe-based superconductors, FeSe-based superconductors have become a hot field in condensed matter physics. The exploration and preparation of such superconducting materials form the basis of studying their physical properties. With the help of various alkali/alkaline-earth/rare-earth metals, different kinds of ammonia/organic molecules have been intercalated into the FeSe layer to form a large number of FeSe-based superconductors with diverse structures and different layer spacing. Metal cations can effectively provide carriers to the superconducting FeSe layer, thus significantly increasing the superconducting transition temperature. The orientation of organic molecules often plays an important role in structural modification and can be used to fine-tune superconductivity. This review introduces the crystal structures and superconducting properties of several typical FeSe-based superconductors containing ammonia/organic molecules intercalation discovered in recent years, and the effects of FeSe layer spacing and superconducting transition temperature are briefly summarized.

Critical Current Density and Meissner Effect of Smart Meta-Superconductor MgB2 and Bi(Pb)SrCaCuO

The smart meta-superconductor MgB2 and Bi(Pb)SrCaCuO increase the superconducting transition temperature (TC), but the changes in the transport critical current density (JC) and Meissner effect are still unknown. Here, we investigated the JC and Meissner effect of smart meta-superconductor MgB2 and Bi(Pb)SrCaCuO. The use of the standard four-probe method shows that Y2O3:Eu3+ and Y2O3:Eu3++Ag inhomogeneous phase significantly increase the JC, and JC decreases to a minimum value at a higher temperature. The Meissner effect was measured by direct current magnetization. The doping of Y2O3:Eu3+ and Y2O3:Eu3++Ag luminescent inhomogeneous phase causes a Meissner effect of MgB2 and Bi(Pb)SrCaCuO at a higher temperature, while the non-luminescent dopant reduces the temperature at which samples have Meissner effect. The introduction of luminescent inhomogeneous phase in conventional MgB2 and copper oxide high-temperature Bi(Pb)SrCaCuO superconductor increases the TC and JC, and Meissner effect is exerted at higher temperature. Therefore, smart meta-superconductivity is suitable for conventional and copper oxide high-temperature superconductors.

A combined first principles study of the structural, magnetic, and phonon properties of monolayer CrI3

The first magnetic 2D material discovered, monolayer (ML) CrI₃, is particularly fascinating due to its ground state ferromagnetism. However, because ML materials are difficult to probe experimentally, much remains unresolved about ML CrI₃'s structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Here, we leverage Density Functional Theory (DFT) and high-accuracy Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations to predict lattice parameters, magnetic moments, and spin-phonon and spin-lattice coupling of ML CrI₃. We exploit a recently developed surrogate Hessian DMC line search technique to determine CrI₃'s ML geometry with DMC accuracy, yielding lattice parameters in good agreement with recently published STM measurements-an accomplishment given the ∼10% variability in previous DFT-derived estimates depending upon the functional. Strikingly, we find that previous DFT predictions of ML CrI₃'s magnetic spin moments are correct on average across a unit cell but miss critical local spatial fluctuations in the spin density revealed by more accurate DMC. DMC predicts that magnetic moments in ML CrI₃ are 3.62 μ_B per chromium and -0.145 μ_B per iodine, both larger than previous DFT predictions. The large disparate moments together with the large spin-orbit coupling of CrI₃'s I-p orbital suggest a ligand superexchange-dominated magnetic anisotropy in ML CrI₃, corroborating recent observations of magnons in its 2D limit. We also find that ML CrI₃ exhibits a substantial spin-phonon coupling of ∼3.32 cm^-1. Our work, thus, establishes many of ML CrI₃'s key properties, while also continuing to demonstrate the pivotal role that DMC can assume in the study of magnetic and other 2D materials.

Materials AIILnInO4 with Ruddlesden-Popper Structure for Electrochemical Applications: Relationship between Ion (Oxygen-Ion, Proton) Conductivity, Water Uptake, and Structural Changes

In this paper, the review of the new class of ionic conductors was made. For the last several years, the layered perovskites with Ruddlesden-Popper structure A^IILnInO₄ attracted attention from the point of view of possibility of the realization of ionic transport. The materials based on Ba(Sr)La(Nd)InO₄ and the various doped compositions were investigated as oxygen-ion and proton conductors. It was found that doped and undoped layered perovskites BaNdInO₄, SrLaInO₄, and BaLaInO₄ demonstrate mixed hole-ionic nature of conductivity in dry air. Acceptor and donor doping leads to a significant increase (up to ~1.5-2 orders of magnitude) of conductivity. One of the most conductive compositions BaNd_0.9Ca_0.1InO_3.95 demonstrates the conductivity value of 5 × 10^-4 S/cm at 500 °C under dry air. The proton conductivity is realized under humid air at low (<500 °C) temperatures. The highest values of proton conductivity are attributed to the compositions BaNd_0.9Ca_0.1InO_3.95 and Ba_1.1La0_.9InO_3.95 (7.6 × 10^-6 and 3.2 × 10^-6 S/cm correspondingly at the 350 °C under wet air). The proton concentration is not correlated with the concentration of oxygen defects in the structure and it increases with an increase in the unit cell volume. The highest proton conductivity (with 95-98% of proton transport below 400 °C) for the materials based on BaLaInO₄ was demonstrated by the compositions with dopant content no more that 0.1 mol. The layered perovskites A^IILnInO₄ are novel and prospective class of functional materials which can be used in the different electrochemical devices in the near future.

Role of Two-Dimensional Ising Superconductivity in the Nonequilibrium Quasiparticle Spin-to-Charge Conversion Efficiency

Nonequilibrium studies of two-dimensional (2D) superconductors (SCs) with Ising spin-orbit coupling are prerequisite for their successful application to equilibrium spin-triplet Cooper pairs and, potentially, Majorana Fermions. By taking advantage of the recent discoveries of 2D SCs and their compatibility with any other materials, we fabricate here nonlocal magnon devices to examine how such 2D Ising superconductivity affects the conversion efficiency of magnon spin to quasiparticle charge in superconducting flakes of 2H-NbSe₂ transferred onto ferrimagnetic insulating Y₃Fe₅O₁₂. Comparison with a reference device based on a conventionally paired superconductor shows that the Y₃Fe₅O₁₂-induced in-plane (IP) exchange spin-splitting in the NbSe₂ flake is hindered by its inherent out-of-plane (OOP) spin-orbit field, which, in turn, limits the transition-state enhancement of the spin-to-charge conversion efficiency. Our out-of-equilibrium study highlights the significance of symmetry matching between underlying Cooper pairs and exchange-induced spin-splitting for the giant transition-state spin-to-charge conversion and may have implications toward proximity-engineered spin-polarized triplet pairing via tuning the relative strength of IP exchange and OOP spin-orbit fields in ferromagnetic insulator/2D Ising SC bilayers.

Micromask Lithography for Cheap and Fast 2D Materials Microstructures Fabrication

The fast and precise fabrication of micro-devices based on single flakes of novel 2D materials and stacked heterostructures is vital for exploration of novel functionalities. In this paper, we demonstrate a fast high-resolution contact mask lithography through a simple upgrade of metallographic optical microscope. Suggested kit for the micromask lithography is compact and easily compatible with a glove box, thus being suitable for a wide range of air-unstable materials. The shadow masks could be either ordered commercially or fabricated in a laboratory using a beam lithography. The processes of the mask alignment and the resist exposure take a few minutes and provide a micrometer resolution. With the total price of the kit components around USD 200, our approach would be convenient for laboratories with the limited access to commercial lithographic systems.
