Degradable Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Based Supramolecular Plastics with High Mechanical Strength in a Watery Environment

Multifunctional Microneedle Patch Based on Metal-Phenolic Network with Photothermal Antimicrobial, ROS Scavenging, Immunomodulatory, and Angiogenesis for Programmed Treatment of Diabetic Wound Healing

In diabetic patients with skin injuries, bacterial proliferation, accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the tissues, and impaired angiogenesis make wound healing difficult. Therefore, eliminating bacteria, removing ROS, and promoting angiogenesis are necessary for treating acute diabetic wounds. In this study, benefiting from the ability of polyphenols to form a metal-phenolic network (MPN) with metal ions, TA-Eu MPN nanoparticles (TM NPs) were synthesized. The prepared photothermal agent CuS NPs and TM NPs were then loaded onto the supporting base and needle tips of PVA/HA (PH) microneedles, respectively, to obtain PH/CuS/TM microneedles. Antibacterial experiments showed that microneedles loaded with CuS NPs could remove bacteria by the photothermal effect. In vitro experiments showed that the microneedles could effectively scavenge ROS, inhibit macrophage polarization to the M1 type, and induce polarization to the M2 type as well as have the ability to promote vascular endothelial cell migration and angiogenesis. Furthermore, in vivo experiments showed that PH/CuS/TM microneedles accelerated wound healing by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and promoting angiogenesis in a diabetic rat wound model. Therefore, PH/CuS/TM microneedles have efficient antibacterial, ROS scavenging, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and angiogenic abilities and hold promise as wound dressings for treating acute diabetic wounds.

A strong, silk protein-inspired tissue adhesive with an enhanced drug release mechanism for transdermal drug delivery

In transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) patches, achieving prolonged adhesion, high drug loading, and rapid drug release simultaneously presented a significant challenge. In this study, a PHT-SP-Cu2+ adhesive was synthesized using polyethylene glycol (PEG), hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), trimethylolpropane (TMP), and silk protein (SP) as functional monomers which were combined with Cu2+ to improve the adhesion, drug loading, and drug release of the patch. The structure of the adhesion chains and the formation of Cu2+-p-π conjugated network in PHT-SP-Cu2+ were characterized and elucidated using different characterization methods including FT-IR, 13C NMR, XPS, SEM imaging and thermodynamic evaluation. The formulation of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) was optimized through comprehensive research on adhesion, mechanics, rheology, and surface energy. The formulation of 3 wt.% SP and 3 wt.% Cu2+ provided superior adhesion properties compared to commercial standards. Subsequently, the peel strength of PHT-SP-Cu2+ was 7.6 times higher than that of the commercially available adhesive DURO-TAK® 87-4098 in the porcine skin peel test. The adhesion test on human skin confirmed that PHT-SP-Cu2+ could adhere to the human body for more than six days. Moreover, the drug loading, in vitro release test and skin permeation test were investigated using ketoprofen as a model drug, and the results showed that PHT-SP-Cu2+ had the efficacy of improving drug compatibility, promoting drug release and enhancing skin permeation as a TDDS. Among them, the drug loading of PHT-SP-Cu2+ was increased by 6.25-fold compared with PHT, and in the in vivo pharmacokinetic analysis, the AUC was similarly increased by 19.22-fold. The mechanism of α-helix facilitated drug release was demonstrated by Flori-Hawkins interaction parameters, molecular dynamics simulations and FT-IR. Biosafety evaluations highlighted the superior skin cytocompatibility and safety of PHT-SP-Cu2+ for transdermal applications. These results would contribute to the development of TDDS patch adhesives with outstanding adhesion, drug loading and release efficiency. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: A new adhesive, PHT-SP-Cu2+, was created for transdermal drug delivery patches. Polyethylene glycol, hexamethylene diisocyanate, trimethylolpropane, silk protein, and Cu2+ were used in synthesis. Characterization techniques confirmed the structure and Cu2+-p-π conjugated networks. Optimal formulation included 3 wt.% SP and 3 wt.% Cu2+, exhibiting superior adhesion. PHT-SP-Cu2+ showed 7.6 times higher peel strength than DURO-TAK® 87-4098 on porcine skin and adhered to human skin for over six days. It demonstrated a 6.25-fold increase in drug loading compared to PHT, with 19.22-fold higher AUC in vivo studies. α-helix facilitated drug release, proven by various analyses. PHT-SP-Cu2+ showed excellent cytocompatibility and safety for transdermal applications. This study contributes to developing efficient TDDS patches.

Mismatched Supramolecular Interactions Facilitate the Reprocessing of Super-Strong and Ultratough Thermoset Elastomers

Thermoset elastomers have been extensively applied in many fields because of their excellent mechanical strengths and durable characteristics, such as an excellent chemical resistance. However, in the context of environmental issues, the nonrecyclability of thermosets has become a major barrier to the further development of these materials. Here, a well-tailored strategy is reported to solve this problem by introducing mismatched supramolecular interactions (MMSIs) into a covalently cross-linked poly(urethane-urea) network with dynamic acylsemicarbazide moieties. The MMSIs significantly strengthen and toughen the thermoset elastomer by effectively dissipating energy and resisting external stress. In addition, the elastomer recycling efficiency is improved 2.7-fold due to the superior reversibility of the MMSIs. The optimized thermoset elastomer features outstanding characteristics, including an ultrahigh tensile strength (110.8 MPa), an unprecedented tensile toughness (1245.2 MJ m-3), as well as remarkable resistance to chemical media, creep, and damage. Most importantly, it exhibits an extraordinary multirecyclability, and the 4th recycling efficiency remains close to 100%. This scalable method promotes the development of thermosets with both high performance and excellent recyclability, thereby providing valuable guidance for addressing the issue of nonrecyclability from a molecular design standpoint.

Sustainable 3D printing by reversible salting-out effects with aqueous salt solutions

Achieving a simple yet sustainable printing technique with minimal instruments and energy remains challenging. Here, a facile and sustainable 3D printing technique is developed by utilizing a reversible salting-out effect. The salting-out effect induced by aqueous salt solutions lowers the phase transition temperature of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) solutions to below 10 °C. It enables the spontaneous and instant formation of physical crosslinks within PNIPAM chains at room temperature, thus allowing the PNIPAM solution to solidify upon contact with a salt solution. The PNIPAM solutions are extrudable through needles and can immediately solidify by salt ions, preserving printed structures, without rheological modifiers, chemical crosslinkers, and additional post-processing steps/equipment. The reversible physical crosslinking and de-crosslinking of the polymer through the salting-out effect demonstrate the recyclability of the polymeric ink. This printing approach extends to various PNIPAM-based composite solutions incorporating functional materials or other polymers, which offers great potential for developing water-soluble disposable electronic circuits, carriers for delivering small materials, and smart actuators.

Cellulose nanofiber-mediated manifold dynamic synergy enabling adhesive and photo-detachable hydrogel for self-powered E-skin

Self-powered skin attachable and detachable electronics are under intense development to enable the internet of everything and everyone in new and useful ways. Existing on-demand separation strategies rely on complicated pretreatments and physical properties of the adherends, achieving detachable-on-demand in a facile, rapid, and universal way remains challenging. To overcome this challenge, an ingenious cellulose nanofiber-mediated manifold dynamic synergy strategy is developed to construct a supramolecular hydrogel with both reversible tough adhesion and easy photodetachment. The cellulose nanofiber-reinforced network and the coordination between Fe ions and polymer chains endow the dynamic reconfiguration of supramolecular networks and the adhesion behavior of the hydrogel. This strategy enables the simple and rapid fabrication of strong yet reversible hydrogels with tunable toughness ((Valuemax-Valuemin)/Valuemax of up to 86%), on-demand adhesion energy ((Valuemax-Valuemin)/Valuemax of up to 93%), and stable conductivity up to 12 mS cm-1. We further extend this strategy to fabricate different cellulose nanofiber/Fe3+-based hydrogels from various biomacromolecules and petroleum polymers, and shed light on exploration of fundamental dynamic supramolecular network reconfiguration. Simultaneously, we prepare an adhesive-detachable triboelectric nanogenerator as a human-machine interface for a self-powered wireless monitoring system based on this strategy, which can acquire the real-time, self-powered monitoring, and wireless whole-body movement signal, opening up possibilities for diversifying potential applications in electronic skins and intelligent devices.

Microbial degradation of low-density polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene by novel isolates from plastic-polluted environment

Biodegradation is an eco-friendly measure to address plastic pollution. This study screened four bacterial isolates that were capable of degrading recalcitrant polymers, i.e., low-density polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene. The unique bacterial isolates were obtained from plastic polluted environment. Dermacoccus sp. MR5 (accession no. OP592184) and Corynebacterium sp. MR10 (accession no. OP536169) from Malaysian mangroves and Bacillus sp. BS5 (accession no. OP536168) and Priestia sp. TL1 (accession no. OP536170) from a sanitary landfill. The four isolates showed a gradual increase in the microbial count and the production of laccase and esterase enzymes after 4 weeks of incubation with the polymers (independent experiment set). Bacillus sp. BS5 produced the highest laccase 15.35 ± 0.19 U/mL and showed the highest weight loss i.e., 4.84 ± 0.6% for PS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups as a result of oxidation reactions by enzymes. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed the oxidation of the polymers to small molecules (alcohol, ethers, and acids) assimilated by the microbes during the degradation. Field emission scanning electron microscopy showed bacterial colonization, biofilm formation, and surface erosion on the polymer surface. The result provided significant insight into enzyme activities and the potential of isolates to target more than one type of polymer for degradation.

Probing the Alcoholysis Degree of Polyvinyl Alcohol by Synergistic Coordination-Regulated Fluorescence

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with abundant hydroxyl groups (-OH) has been widely used for membranes, hydrogels, and films, and its function is largely affected by the alcoholysis degree. Therefore, the development of rapid and accurate methods for alcoholysis degree determination in PVAs is important. In this contribution, we have proposed a novel fluorescence-based platform for probing the alcoholysis degree of PVA by using the (E)-N-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-(quinolin-2-yl)methanimine (QPM)-Zn2+ complex as the reporter. The mechanism study disclosed that the strong coordination between -OH and Zn2+ induced the capture of the QPM-Zn2+ complex and promoted its subsequent immobilization into the noncrystalline area. The immobilization of the QPM-Zn2+ complex restricted its molecular rotation and reduced the nonirradiative transition, thus yielding bright emissions. In addition, the practical applications of this proposed method were further validated by the accurate alcoholysis degree determination of blind PVA samples with the confirmation of the National Standard protocol. It is expected that the developed fluorescence approach in this work might become an admissive strategy for screening the alcoholysis degree of PVA.

Acid-Cleavable Aromatic Polymers for the Fabrication of Closed-Loop Recyclable Plastics with High Mechanical Strength and Excellent Chemical Resistance

Although closed-loop recycling of dynamic covalent bond-based plastics does not require catalysts, their mechanical strength and chemical stability remain a major concern. In this study, closed-loop recyclable poly(aryl imine) (PAI) plastics with high mechanical strength and excellent chemical resistance are fabricated by copolymerizing aromatic amines and aromatic aldehydes through dynamic imine bonds. The resulting PAI plastic with a tensile strength of 58.2 MPa exhibits excellent chemical resistance and mechanical stability in acidic and basic aqueous solutions and various organic solvents. The PAI plastics can be depolymerized in a mixed solvent of tetrahydrofuran (THF)/HCl aqueous solution through the dissociation of imine bonds, and the monomers can be facilely recovered with high purity and isolated yields due to the solubility difference between the aromatic amines and aromatic aldehydes in selective solvents. The efficient closed-loop recycling of the PAI plastic can also be realized through monomer conversion because the hydrolysis of the aromatic aldehydes generates aromatic amines. The recovered monomers can be used to re-fabricate original PAI plastics. This PAI plastic can be selectively recovered from complicated mixed polymer waste streams due to the mild depolymerization conditions of the PAI plastic and its high stability in most organic solvents.

Polyurethane with β-Selenocarbonyl Structure Enabling the Combination of Plastic Degradation and Waste Upcycling

Degradable polymers offer a promising solution to mitigate global plastic pollution, but the degraded products often suffer from diminished value. Upcycling is a more sustainable approach to upgrade polymer waste into value-added products. Herein, we report a β-selenocarbonyl-containing polyurethane (SePU), which can be directly degraded under mild conditions into valuable selenium fertilizers for selenium-rich vegetable cultivation globally, enabling both plastic degradation and waste upcycling. Under oxidation condition, this polymer can be easily and selectively degraded via selenoxide elimination reaction from mixed plastic waste. The degraded product can serve as effective selenium fertilizers to increase selenium content in radish and pak choi. The SePU exhibits excellent mechanical properties. Additionally, we observed the formation of spherulites-like selenium particles within the materials during degradation for the first time. Our research offers a successful application of selenoxide elimination reaction in the field of plastic degradation for the first time, endowing plastics with both degradability and high reusable value. This strategy provides a promising solution to reduce pollution and improve economy and sustainability of plastics.

Microporous Polyelectrolyte Complexes by Hydroplastic Foaming

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) have emerged as an attractive category of materials for their water processability and some similarities to natural biopolymers. Herein, we employ the intrinsic hydroplasticity of PEC materials to enable the generation of porous structures with the aid of gas foaming. Such foamable materials are fabricated by simply mixing polycation, polyanion, and a UV-initiated chemical foaming agent in an aqueous solution, followed by molding into thin films. The gas foaming of the PEC films can be achieved upon exposure to UV illumination under water, where the films are plasticized and the gaseous products from the photolysis of foaming agents afford the formation, expanding, and merging of numerous bubbles. The porosity and morphology of the resulting porous films can be customized by tuning film composition, foaming conditions, and especially the degree of plasticizing effect, illustrating the high flexibility of this hydroplastic foaming method. Due to the rapid initiation of gas foaming, the present method enables the formation of porous structures via an instant one-step process, much more efficient than those existing strategies for porous PEC materials. More importantly, such a pore-forming mechanism might be extended to other hydroplastic materials (e.g., biopolymers) and help to yield hydroplasticity-based processing strategies.

Highly Stretchable, Biodegradable, and Recyclable Green Electronic Substrates

As a steady stream of electronic devices being discarded, a vast amount of electronic substrate waste of petroleum-based nondegradable polymers is generated, raising endless concerns about resource depletion and environmental pollution. With coupled reagent (CR)-grafted artificial marble waste (AMW@CR) as functional fillers, polylactic acid (PLA)-based highly stretchable biodegradable green composite (AMW@CR-SBGC) is prepared, with elongation at break up to more than 250%. The degradation mechanism of AMW@CR-SBGC is deeply revealed. AMW@CR not only contributed to the photodegradation of AMW@CR-SBGC but also significantly promoted the water degradation of AMW@CR-SBGC. More importantly, AMW@CR-SBGC showed great potential as sustainable green electronic substrates and AMW@CR-SBGC-based electronic skin can simulate the perception of human skin to strain signals. The outstanding programmable degradability, recyclability, and reusability of AMW@CR-SBGC enabled its application in transient electronics. As the first demonstration of artificial marble waste in electronic substrates, AMW@CR-SBGC killed three birds with one stone in terms of waste resourcing, e-waste reduction, and saving nonrenewable petroleum resources, opening up vast new opportunities for green electronics applications in areas such as health monitoring, artificial intelligence, and security.

Hyperbranched Dynamic Crosslinking Networks Enable Degradable, Reconfigurable, and Multifunctional Epoxy Vitrimer

Degradation and reprocessing of thermoset polymers have long been intractable challenges to meet a sustainable future. Star strategies via dynamic cross-linking hydrogen bonds and/or covalent bonds can afford reprocessable thermosets, but often at the cost of properties or even their functions. Herein, a simple strategy coined as hyperbranched dynamic crosslinking networks (HDCNs) toward in-practice engineering a petroleum-based epoxy thermoset into degradable, reconfigurable, and multifunctional vitrimer is provided. The special characteristics of HDCNs involve spatially topological crosslinks for solvent adaption and multi-dynamic linkages for reversible behaviors. The resulting vitrimer displays mild room-temperature degradation to dimethylacetamide and can realize the cycling of carbon fiber and epoxy powder from composite. Besides, they have supra toughness and high flexural modulus, high transparency as well as fire-retardancy surpassing their original thermoset. Notably, it is noted in a chance-following that ethanol molecule can induce the reconstruction of vitrimer network by ester-exchange, converting a stiff vitrimer into elastomeric feature, and such material records an ultrahigh modulus (5.45 GPa) at -150 °C for their ultralow-temperature condition uses. This is shaping up to be a potentially sustainable advanced material to address the post-consumer thermoset waste, and also provide a newly crosslinked mode for the designs of high-performance polymer.

Reversible Crosslinking of Commodity Polymers via Photocontrolled Metal-Ligand Coordination for High-Performance and Recyclable Thermoset Plastics

Thermoset plastics, highly desired for their stability, durability, and chemical resistance, are currently consumed in over 60 million tons annually across the globe, but they are difficult to recycle due to their crosslinked structures. The development of recyclable thermoset plastics is an important but challenging task. In this work, recyclable thermoset plastics are prepared by crosslinking a commodity polymer, polyacrylonitrile (PAN), with a small percentage of a Ru complex via nitrile-Ru coordination. PAN is obtained from industry and the Ru complex is synthesized in one step, which enables the production of recyclable thermoset plastics in an efficient way. In addition, the thermoset plastics exhibit impressive mechanical performance, boasting a Young's modulus of 6.3 GPa and a tensile strength of 109.8 MPa. Moreover, they can be de-crosslinked when exposed to both light and a solvent and can then be re-crosslinked upon heating. This reversible crosslinking mechanism enables the recycling of thermosets from a mixture of plastic waste. The preparation of recyclable thermosets from other commodity polymers such as poly(styrene-coacrylonitrile) (SAN) resins and polymer composites through reversible crosslinking is also demonstrated. This study shows that reversible crosslinking via metal-ligand coordination is a new strategy for designing recyclable thermosets using commodity polymers.

Insights into the Correlation of Cross-linking Modes with Mechanical Properties for Dynamic Polymeric Networks

Simultaneously introducing covalent and supramolecular cross-links into one system to construct dually cross-linked networks, has been proved an effective approach to prepare high-performance materials. However, so far, features and advantages of dually cross-linked networks compared with those possessing individual covalent or supramolecular cross-linking points are rarely investigated. Herein, on the basis of comparison between supramolecular polymer network (SPN), covalent polymer network (CPN) and dually cross-linked polymer network (DPN), we reveal that the dual cross-linking strategy can endow the DPN with integrated advantages of CPN and SPN. Benefiting from the energy dissipative ability along with the dissociation of host-guest complexes, the DPN shows excellent toughness and ductility similar to the SPN. Meanwhile, the elasticity of covalent cross-links in the DPN could rise the structural stability to a level comparable to the CPN, exhibiting quick deformation recovery capacity. Moreover, the DPN has the strongest breaking stress and puncture resistance among the three, proving the unique property advantages of dual cross-linking method. These findings gained from our study further deepen the understanding of dynamic polymeric networks and facilitate the preparation of high-performance elastomeric materials.

Recent Advances in Biodegradable and Biocompatible Synthetic Polymers Used in Skin Wound Healing

The treatment of skin wounds caused by trauma and pathophysiological disorders has been a growing healthcare challenge, posing a great economic burden worldwide. The use of appropriate wound dressings can help to facilitate the repair and healing rate of defective skin. Natural polymer biomaterials such as collagen and hyaluronic acid with excellent biocompatibility have been shown to promote wound healing and the restoration of skin. However, the low mechanical properties and fast degradation rate have limited their applications. Skin wound dressings based on biodegradable and biocompatible synthetic polymers can not only overcome the shortcomings of natural polymer biomaterials but also possess favorable properties for applications in the treatment of skin wounds. Herein, we listed several biodegradable and biocompatible synthetic polymers used as wound dressing materials, such as PVA, PCL, PLA, PLGA, PU, and PEO/PEG, focusing on their composition, fabrication techniques, and functions promoting wound healing. Additionally, the future development prospects of synthetic biodegradable polymer-based wound dressings are put forward. Our review aims to provide new insights for the further development of wound dressings using synthetic biodegradable polymers.

High strength, controlled release of curcumin-loaded ZIF-8/chitosan/zein film with excellence gas barrier and antibacterial activity for litchi preservation

Polysaccharide films containing protein additives have good application prospects in agriculture and food field. However, interfacial incompatibility between hydrophobic proteins and hydrophilic polymers remains a major technical challenge. In this work, the interfacial compatibility between hydrophobic zein and hydrophilic chitosan (CS) is improved by the chemical crosslinking between zinc ions of curcumin-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Cur-ZIF-8) with CS and zein. With the improvement of interface compatibility, the results show that the elongation at break and O₂ barrier property of synthesized Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein are 9.2 and 1.5 times higher than CS/Zein, respectively. And the Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein exhibits superior antibacterial and antioxidant properties as well. Importantly, Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein can also be used as an intelligent-responsive release platform for curcumin. As a result, Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein can keep the freshness and appearance of litchi at least 8 days longer than that of CS/Zein. Therefore, this study provides a novel method to improve the interfacial compatibility between hydrophobic proteins and hydrophilic polymers, and is expected to expand the application of protein/polymer composites in agriculture and food field.

Scalable Manufacturing of Environmentally Stable All-Solid-State Plant Protein-Based Supercapacitors with Optimal Balance of Capacitive Performance and Mechanically Robust

The development of advanced biomaterial with mechanically robust and high energy density is critical for flexible electronics, such as batteries and supercapacitors. Plant proteins are ideal candidates for making flexible electronics due to their renewable and eco-friendly natures. However, due to the weak intermolecular interactions and abundant hydrophilic groups of protein chains, the mechanical properties of protein-based materials, especially in bulk materials, are largely constrained, which hinders their performance in practical applications. Here, a green and scalable method is shown for the fabrication of advanced film biomaterials with high mechanical strength (36.3 MPa), toughness (21.25 MJ m^-3 ), and extraordinary fatigue-resistance (213 000 times) by incorporating tailor-made core-double-shell structured nanoparticles. Subsequently, the film biomaterials combine to construct an ordered, dense bulk material by stacking-up and hot-pressing techniques. Surprisingly, the solid-state supercapacitor based on compacted bulk material shows an ultrahigh energy density of 25.8 Wh kg^-1 , which is much higher than those previously reported advanced materials. Notably, the bulk material also demonstrates long-term cycling stability, which can be maintained under ambient condition or immersed in H₂ SO₄ electrolyte for more than 120 days. Thus, this research improves the competitiveness of protein-based materials for real-world applications such as flexible electronics and solid-state supercapacitors.

Mechanism and characterization of microplastic aging process: A review

With the increasing production of petroleum-based plastics, the problem of environmental pollution caused by plastics has aroused widespread concern. Microplastics, which are formed by the fragmentation of macro plastics, are bio-accumulate easily due to their small size and slow degradation under natural conditions. The aging of plastics is an inevitable process for their degradation and enhancement of adsorption performance toward pollutants due to a series of changes in their physiochemical properties, which significantly increase the toxicity and harm of plastics. Therefore, studies should focus on the aging process of microplastics through reasonable characterization methods to promote the aging process and prevent white pollution. This review summarizes the latest progress in natural aging process and characterization methods to determine the natural aging mechanism of microplastics. In addition, recent advances in the artificial aging of microplastic pollutants are reviewed. The degradation status and by-products of biodegradable plastics in the natural environment and whether they can truly solve the plastic pollution problem have been discussed. Findings from the literature pointed out that the aging process of microplastics lacks professional and exclusive characterization methods, which include qualitative and quantitative analyses. To lessen the toxicity of microplastics in the environment, future research directions have been suggested based on existing problems in the current research. This review could provide a systematic reference for in-depth exploration of the aging mechanism and behavior of microplastics in natural and artificial systems.

Mechanically Strong and Tough Poly(urea-urethane) Thermosets Capable of Being Degraded under Mild Condition

The development of degradable polymeric materials such as degradable polyurethane or polyurea has been much highlighted for resource conservation and environmental protection. Herein, a facile strategy of constructing mechanically strong and tough poly(urea-urethane) (PUU) thermosets that can be degraded under mild conditions by using triple boron-urethane bonds (TBUB) as cross-linkers is demonstrated. By tailoring the molecular weight of the soft segment of the prepolymers, the mechanical performance can be finely controlled. Based on the cross-linking of TBUB units and hydrogen-binding interactions between TBUB linkages, the as-prepared PUU thermosets have excellent mechanical strength of ≈40.2 MPa and toughness of ≈304.9 MJ m^-3 . Typically, the PBUU900 strip can lift a barbell with 60 000 times its own weight, showing excellent load-bearing capacity. Meanwhile, owing to the covalent cross-linking of TBUB units, all the PUU thermosets show initial decomposition temperatures over 290 °C, which are comparable to those of the traditional thermosets. Moreover, the TBUB cross-linked PUU thermosets can be easily degraded in a mild acid solution. The small pieces of the PBUU sample can be fully decomposed in 1 m HCl/THF solution for 3.5 h at room temperature.

Surface Hydrophobization Provides Hygroscopic Supramolecular Plastics Based on Polysaccharides with Damage-Specific Healability and Room-Temperature Recyclability

Supramolecular materials with room-temperature healability and recyclability are highly desired because they can extend materials lifetimes and reduce resources consumption. Most approaches toward healing and recycling rely on the dynamically reversible supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen, ionic and coordinate bonds, which are hygroscopic and vulnerable to water. The general water-induced plasticization facilitates the healing and reprocessing process but cause a troubling problem of random self-adhesion. To address this issue, here it is reported that by modifying the hygroscopic surfaces with hydrophobic alkyl chains of dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS), supramolecular plastic films based on commercial raw materials of sodium alginate (SA) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) display extraordinary damage-specific healability. Owing to the hydrophobic surfaces, random self-adhesion is eliminated even under humid environment. When damage occurs, the fresh surfaces with ionic groups and hydroxyl groups expose exclusively at the damaged site. Thus, damage-specific healing can be readily facilitated by water-induced plasticization. Moreover, the films display excellent room-temperature recyclability. After multiple times of reprocessing and re-modifying with DTMS, the rejuvenated films exhibit fatigueless mechanical properties. It is anticipated that this approach to damage-specific healing and room-temperature recycling based on surface hydrophobization can be applied to design various of supramolecular plastic polysaccharides materials for building sustainable societies.

Construction of PVA-lignosulfonate hydrogels for improved mechanical performances and all-in-one flexible supercapacitors

All-in-one supercapacitors are one of the best candidates for realizing flexible supercapacitors because of their outstanding flexibility and stability. The pursuit of improved electrochemical performance while meeting the requirements of flexible functionalization has always been a long-term goal. To this aim, lignosulfonate (LS) can be used in the field of all-in-one supercapacitors and contribute to its unique three-dimensional structure and abundant functional groups. By doping a small amount of LS, a simple approach is developed to achieve a one-step improvement in electrochemical performance and flexible functional design in this study. PVA-lignosulfonate hydrogel (PLH) obtains a compact and regular three-dimensional porous structure, higher ionic conductivity (0.17 S/cm), bending flexibility, and compression resistance. Polyaniline (PANI) based solid-state supercapacitors PANI-PVA and PANI-PLH show specific capacitance values of 505 and 558 mF/cm², respectively, at a current density of 0.5 mA/cm². After 5000 charge-discharge cycles, the capacitance retention rate increases from 53 % to 73 %, and the PANI-PLH can maintain the stability of electrochemical performance under bending, folding, puncturing, and squeezing. After 1600 times folding, the capacity remains almost 100 %. This study presents a one-step optimization for the construction of functional and high-performance all-in-one supercapacitors in a simple way and a novel idea for the potential application of the high-value lignin.

Bioinspired Colloidal Photonic Composites: Fabrications and Emerging Applications

Organisms in nature have evolved unique structural colors and stimuli-responsive functions for camouflage, warning, and communication over millions of years, which are essential to their survival in harsh conditions. Inspired by these characteristics, colloidal photonic composites (CPCs) composed of colloidal photonic crystals embedded in the polymeric matrix are artificially prepared and show great promise in applications. This review focuses on the summary of building blocks, i.e., colloidal particles and polymeric matrices, and constructive strategies from the perspective of designing CPCs with robust performance and specific functionality. Furthermore, their state-of-the-art applications are also discussed, including colorful coatings, anti-counterfeiting, and regulation of photoluminescence, especially in the field of visualized sensing. Finally, current challenges and potential for future developments in this field are discussed. The purpose of this review is not only to clarify the design principle for artificial CPCs but also to serve as a roadmap for the exploration of next-generation photonic materials.

A Polyvinyl Alcohol-Tannic Acid Gel with Exceptional Mechanical Properties and Ultraviolet Resistance

Design and preparation of gels with excellent mechanical properties has garnered wide interest at present. In this paper, preparation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-tannic acid (TA) gels with exceptional properties is documented. The crystallization zone and hydrogen bonding acted as physical crosslinkages fabricated by a combination of freeze-thaw treatment and a tannic acid compound. The effect of tannic acid on mechanical properties of prepared PVA-TA gels was investigated and analyzed. When the mass fraction of PVA was 20.0 wt% and soaking time was 12 h in tannic acid aqueous solution, tensile strength and the elongation at break of PVA-TA gel reached 5.97 MPa and 1450%, respectively. This PVA-TA gel was far superior to a pure 20.0 wt% PVA hydrogel treated only with the freeze-thaw process, as well as most previously reported PVA-TA gels. The toughness of a PVA-TA gel is about 14 times that of a pure PVA gel. In addition, transparent PVA-TA gels can effectively prevent ultraviolet-light-induced degradation. This study provides a novel strategy and reference for design and preparation of high-performance gels that are promising for practical application.

Fe(III)-coordinated N-[tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]acrylamide-modified acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives with enhanced adhesion and cohesion for efficient transdermal application

Pressure-sensitive adhesives are critical to the product's safety, efficacy, and quality in transdermal drug delivery systems. However, many defects of transdermal patches (e.g., insufficient adhesion, patch displacement, and "dark ring" phenomenon) remain. Herein, the N-[tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]acrylamide (NAT)-modified acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive coordinated with Fe(III) (AA-NAT/Fe³⁺) was creatively proposed. Results demonstrated that the adhesiveness and cohesiveness of the optimized AA-NAT/Fe³⁺ were higher by 1.8- and 9.7-fold, respectively, than those of commercially available DURO-TAK® 87-4098 due to the hydrogen bonding interaction of NAT-skin interface and coordination of NAT-Fe³⁺. Moreover, compared with that of DURO-TAK® 87-4098, the adhesion time of AA-NAT/Fe³⁺ on the human forearm was remarkably prolonged, and no "dark ring" phenomenon was observed for AA-NAT/Fe³⁺ after removal. After clonidine (CLO) was loaded into AA-NAT/Fe³⁺, controlled drug release and a drug transdermal behavior were endowed for CLO@AA-NAT/Fe³⁺in vitro and in vivo. AA-NAT/Fe³⁺ still maintained superiority in adhesion and cohesion properties after CLO loading. These observations would contribute to the development of pressure-sensitive adhesives with outstanding adhesion and cohesion for transdermal patches. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This N-[tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]acrylamide-modified acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive coordinated with Fe(III) has enhanced adhesion and cohesion properties, which provide a simple but effective strategy to solve the problems (e.g., insufficient adhesion, patch displacement, and "dark ring" phenomenon) in existing transdermal patches.

Noncovalently Cross-Linked Polymeric Materials Reinforced by Well-Designed In Situ-Formed Nanofillers

Noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials generally exhibit lower mechanical robustness than traditional polymeric materials. Therefore, it is important to improve the mechanical properties of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials using an efficient and generalized approach. In this Perspective, we systematically summarized the recent development of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials reinforced by in situ-formed nanofillers. The synergy of high-density noncovalent interactions and in situ-formed rigid nanofillers provided an effective means for the fabrication of noncovalently cross-linked plastics with high mechanical strength. The design of in situ-formed tough nanofillers, which could deform and dissociate, endowed the noncovalently cross-linked hydrogels and elastomers with high toughness, excellent stretchability, elasticity, damage resistance, and damage tolerance. Benefiting from the well-designed in situ-formed nanofillers, these noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials with enhanced mechanical strength still exhibited satisfactory healing, recycling, and reprocessing properties. Outlooks were provided to envision the remaining challenges to the further development and practical application of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials reinforced with in situ-formed nanofillers.

Rationally Tuning Phase Separation in Polymeric Membranes toward Optimized All-day Passive Radiative Coolers

The all-day passive radiative cooler has emerged as one of the state-of-the-art energy-saving cooling tool kits but routinely suffers from limited processability, high cost, and complicated fabrication processes, which impede large-scale applications. To address these challenges, this work exploits a polymer-based passive radiative cooler with optimized turbidity, reconfigurability, and recyclability. These cooling membranes are fabricated via selective condensation of octyl side chain-modified polyvinyl alcohol through a non-solvent-induced phase separation method. The rational tuning over spatial organization and distribution of the air-polymer interface renders optimized bright whiteness with solar reflectance at 96%. Meanwhile, the abundant -C-O-C- bonds endow such membranes with infrared thermal emittance over 90%. The optimized membrane realizes a subambient cooling of ∼5.7 °C with an average cooling power of ∼81 W m-2 under a solar intensity of ∼528 W m-2. Furthermore, the supramolecule nature of the developed passive radiative cooling membrane bears enhanced shape malleability and recyclability, substantially enhancing its conformability to the complex geometry and extending its life for an eco-friendly society.

Polymerizable Deep Eutectic Solvent-Based Skin-Like Elastomers with Dynamic Schemochrome and Self-Healing Ability

Animal skin is a huge source of inspiration when it comes to multifunctional sensing materials. Bioinspired sensors integrated with the intriguing performance of skin-like steady wide-range strain detection, real-time dynamic visual cues, and self-healing ability hold great promise for next-generation electronic skin materials. Here, inspired by the skins of a chameleon, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) liquid crystal skeleton is embedded into polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES) via in situ polymerization to develop a skin-like elastomer. Benefiting from the elastic ionic conductive PDES matrix and dynamic interfacial hydrogen bonding, this strategy has broken through the limitations that CNCs-based cholesteric structure is fragile and its helical pitch is non-adjustable, endowing the resulting elastomer with strain-induced wide-range (0-500%) dynamic structural colors and excellent self-healing ability (78.9-90.7%). Furthermore, the resulting materials exhibit high stretch-ability (1163.7%), strain-sensing and self-adhesive abilities, which make them well-suitable for developing widely applicable and highly reliable flexible sensors. The proposed approach of constructing biomimetic skin-like materials with wide-range dynamic schemochrome is expected to extend new possibilities in diverse applications including anti-counterfeit labels, soft foldable displays, and wearable optical devices.

Multivalent Metal Ion Cross-Linked Lignocellulosic Nanopaper with Excellent Water Resistance and Optical Performance

Cellulose nanopaper is an attractive film material exhibiting huge potential in various fields, while its terrible water stability greatly hinders practical applications. Previous efforts on addressing this issue usually sacrifice the sustainability or material performance of film. In this study, we report a high-performing lignocellulosic nanopaper with superior water resistance and excellent optical properties. The strategy involves preparing a lignin-containing cellulose nanopaper (LCNP) first, and then infiltrating metal ions into the film to build cross-linking interactions within the fiber networks. Owing to the coordination bonds formed between metal ions and lignocellulosic components, the resulting metal ions cross-linked LCNP (M⁺-LCNP) displays outstanding water resistance, including the highest wet mechanical strength of ∼52 MPa after immersing in water for 24 h, which retains nearly 47% of the dry mechanical strength of the film. The ultralow water uptake ratio of ∼35% also confirms it possesses a superior wet dimensional stability. Moreover, these nanopapers also showcase the desired optical performances, including both high visible transmittance (>85%) and total ultraviolet-blocking efficiency (>91%, only transmitting a little of UVA). Overall, this fully degradable film is a promising alternative to replacing conventional plastics that are applied in multiple areas.

High lignin containing hydrogels with excellent conducting, self-healing, antibacterial, dye adsorbing, sensing, moist-induced power generating and supercapacitance properties

Herein, we design a dynamic redox system of using high contents of lignosulfonate (LS) and Al³⁺ to prepare poly acrylic acid (PAA) (LS-g-PAA-Al) hydrogels. The presence of high LS and Al³⁺ contents, in combination with the effective Al³⁺ complexes formed, renders the resultant hydrogel with some unique attributes, including excellent ionic conductivity (as high as 7.38 S·m^-1) and antibacterial activity; furthermore, a very fast gelation (in 1 min) was obtained. As a flexible strain sensor, the LS-g-PAA-Al hydrogel with high conductivity demonstrates superior sensitivity in human movement detection. In addition, the rich anionic hydrophilic groups, such as sulfonic groups, phenolic hydroxyl groups, in the hydrogels impart the resultant hydrogels with excellent adsorption capacity for cationic dyes: when using Rhodamine B (RB) as a model cationic dye, the adsorption capacity of the resultant hydrogel reaches 334.64 mg·g^-1; as a moist-induced power generator, it generates maximum 150.5 mV open circuit voltage with moist air flow. When the hydrogel electrolyte is assembled into a supercapacitor assembly, it shows high specific capacitance of 245.4 F·g^-1, with the maximum energy density of 21.8 Wh·kg^-1, power density of 2.37 kW·kg^-1, and capacitance retention of 95.1% after 5000 consecutive charge-discharge cycles.

Hierarchical Response Network Boosts Solvent-Free Ionic Conductive Elastomers with Extreme Stretchability, Healability, and Recyclability for Ionic Sensors

The construction of solvent-free ionic conductive elastomers with high mechanical stretchability and large dynamic reversibility of chain segments is highly desired yet challenging. Here, a hierarchical response network strategy is presented for preparing highly stretchable yet mechanical robust ionic conductive elastomer composites (ICECs), among which poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) microcrystalline serves as a physical cross-linking site providing high mechanical strength and elasticity, while dense hydrogen bonds endow superior mechanical toughness and dynamic reversibility. Due to the formation of the hierarchical response network, the resultant ICECs exhibit intrinsically high stretchability (>1500%), large tensile strength (∼2.1 MPa), and high fracture toughness (∼28 MJ m^-3). Intriguingly, due to the high reversibility of hydrogen-bonded networks, the ICECs after being crushed are capable of healing and recycling by simple hot-pressing for multiple cycles. Moreover, the ICECs are dissolvable under an alkaline condition and easily regenerated in an acid solution for manifold cycles. Importantly, the healed, recycled, and regenerated ICECs are capable of maintaining their initial mechanical elasticity and ionic conducting performance. Due to the integration of high stretchability, fatigue resistance, and ionic conductivity, the ICECs can readily work as a stretchable ionic conductor for skin-inspired ionic sensors for real-time and accurately sensing complex human motions. This study thus provides a promising strategy for the development of healable and renewable ionic sensing materials with high stretchability and mechanical robustness, demonstrating great potential in soft ionotronics.

Facile fabrication of a polyvinyl alcohol-based hydrophobic fluorescent film via the Hantzsch reaction for broadband UV protection

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is harmful to human health. However, the traditional preparation of anti-UV films through the doping of UV absorbers leads to unstable products. Chemical modification of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to fabricate functional derivatives expand the application of these materials. Herein, a 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) fluorescent ring with a conjugated structure as a strong UV-absorber group was introduced onto a polyvinyl alcohol acetoacetate (PVAA) film to improve its UV-blocking performance. Firstly, PVAA was prepared via transesterification using tert-butyl acetoacetate (t-BAA). Then, the Hantzsch reaction was carried out on the surface of the PVAA film at room temperature. The resulting film showed high transparency, bright fluorescence emission, good mechanical properties, and outstanding stability. The introduction of the hydrophobic carbon chain reduced the hydrophilicity and swelling capacity of the PVAA film. In addition, the conjugated structure endowed the fluorescent film with excellent UV-blocking performance, where almost 100% UVA and UVB spectra could be shielded. The UV-blocking properties of the prepared films were persistent when they were exposed to UV irradiation, solvents, and subjected to thermal treatment. This work presents a facile and environmentally-friendly strategy by which to fabricate a multifunctional PVA-based film, which holds great potential for application in the anti-counterfeiting and UV-blocking fields.

How to Build a Microplastics-Free Environment: Strategies for Microplastics Degradation and Plastics Recycling

Microplastics are an emergent yet critical issue for the environment because of high degradation resistance and bioaccumulation. Unfortunately, the current technologies to remove, recycle, or degrade microplastics are insufficient for complete elimination. In addition, the fragmentation and degradation of mismanaged plastic wastes in environment have recently been identified as a significant source of microplastics. Thus, the developments of effective microplastics removal methods, as well as, plastics recycling strategies are crucial to build a microplastics-free environment. Herein, this review comprehensively summarizes the current technologies for eliminating microplastics from the environment and highlights two key aspects to achieve this goal: 1) Catalytic degradation of microplastics into environmentally friendly organics (carbon dioxide and water); 2) catalytic recycling and upcycling plastic wastes into monomers, fuels, and valorized chemicals. The mechanisms, catalysts, feasibility, and challenges of these methods are also discussed. Novel catalytic methods such as, photocatalysis, advanced oxidation process, and biotechnology are promising and eco-friendly candidates to transform microplastics and plastic wastes into environmentally benign and valuable products. In the future, more effort is encouraged to develop eco-friendly methods for the catalytic conversion of plastics into valuable products with high efficiency, high product selectivity, and low cost under mild conditions.

Dynamic Nanoconfinement Enabled Highly Stretchable and Supratough Polymeric Materials with Desirable Healability and Biocompatibility

Lightweight polymeric materials are highly attractive platforms for many potential industrial applications in aerospace, soft robots, and biological engineering fields. For these real-world applications, it is vital for them to exhibit a desirable combination of great toughness, large ductility, and high strength together with desired healability and biocompatibility. However, existing material design strategies usually fail to achieve such a performance portfolio owing to their different and even mutually exclusive governing mechanisms. To overcome these hurdles, herein, for the first time a dynamic hydrogen-bonded nanoconfinement concept is proposed, and the design of highly stretchable and supratough biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with well-dispersed dynamic nanoconfinement phases induced by hydrogen-bond (H-bond) crosslinking is demonstrated. Because of H-bond crosslinking and dynamic nanoconfinement, the as-prepared PVA nanocomposite film exhibits a world-record toughness of 425 ± 31 MJ m^-3 in combination with a tensile strength of 98 MPa and a large break strain of 550%, representing the best of its kind and even outperforming most natural and artificial materials. In addition, the final polymer exhibits a good self-healing ability and biocompatibility. This work affords new opportunities for creating mechanically robust, healable, and biocompatible polymeric materials, which hold great promise for applications, such as soft robots and artificial ligaments.
