Abstract
The unprecedented silylene-supported dibenzodiboraoxepin 2 and 9,10-diboraphenanthrene complexes 6 and 8 were synthesized. The (NHSi)2B2(xanthene) [NHSi = PhC(NtBu)2(Me2N)Si:] 2 results from debromination of the bis(NHSi)-stabilized bis(dibromoboryl)xanthene 1 with potassium graphite (KC8); 2 is capable of activating white phosphorus and ammonia to form the B2P4 cage compound 3 and H2N-B-B-H diborane species 4, respectively. The thermal rearrangement of 2 affords the 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraphenanthrene 5 through a bis(NHSi)-assisted intramolecular reductive C-O-C deoxygenation process. Notably, the 9,10-diboraphenanthrene derivatives 6 and 8 could be generated by deoxygenation of 2 with KC8 and 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene, respectively. The aromaticity of 6 and 8 was confirmed by computational studies. Strikingly, the NHSi ligand in 8 engenders the monodeoxygenation of carbon dioxide in toluene at room temperature to form the CO-stabilized 9,10-diboraphenanthrene derivative 9 via the silaoxadiborinanone intermediate 10.

Abstract
A tricyclic annulated 1,4,2-diazaborole is readily accessed via reaction of a bidentate pyridyl-carbene ligand with MesBBr2 followed by reduction. Dearomatization of the flanking rings is shown to increase reactivity of this heterocycle in the form of a B-centred alkylation with MeI. Its reaction with hydrido-, fluoro-, and chloro-boranes reveal an unprecedented ring expansion reaction to form a diverse family of B2C2N2 heterocycles, reduction of which allows facile access to the first examples of Cs symmetric 1,4,2,5-diazadiborinines. DFT calculations have shed light on the electronic structures of the reduced species and provide insight into mechanistic aspects of the observed ring-expansion.

Abstract
The reactivity of B3N3-doped hexa-cata-hexabenzocoronene (B3N3-NG), Al3N3-NG, B3P3-NG and Al3P3-NG, models of doped nanographenes (NGs), towards carbon dioxide was studied with density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,3pd)//M06-2X/6-31+G* level of theory. The NG systems exhibit a poly-cyclic poly-frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) nature, featuring multiple Lewis acid/Lewis base pairs on their surface enabling the capture of several CO2 molecules. The capture of CO2 by these systems was investigated within two scenarios: (A) sequential capture of up to three CO2 molecules and (B) capture of CO2 molecules in the presence of a sodium cation. The resulting adducts were analyzed in terms of the activation barriers and relative stabilities. The presence of aluminium atoms changes the asynchrony of the reaction favoring the aluminium-oxygen bond and influences the regioselectivity of the multi-capture. A cooperative effect is predicted due to π-electron delocalization, with the sodium cation stabilizing the stationary points and favoring the addition of CO2 to the NGs.

Abstract
Boron- and nitrogen-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (B-PAHs) have established a strong foothold in the realm of organic electronics. However, their catalytic potential remains largely untapped. In this study, we synthesise and characterise two bench stable B,N-doped PAH derivatives based on a 1,4-azaborinine motif. Most importantly, the anthracene derived structure is an efficient catalyst in the reduction of various carbonyls and imines. These results underscore the potential of B,N-PAHs in catalytic transformations, setting the stage for deeper exploration in this chemical space.

Abstract
The 2,3,4,5,6-pentaphenyl-1,2-azaborinin-1-yl (PPAB) potassium complex 1 undergoes facile salt metathesis with 9,10-dibromo-9,10-dihydroboraanthracene (DBABr2), 5-bromodibenzo[b,d]borole (DBBBr), 1-chlorotetraphenylborole (TPBCl) and dibromo(phenyl)borane (BBr2Ph) to yield the corresponding N-borylated azaborinines N-DBABr-PPAB (2, which hydrolyses and dimerises to the oxo-bridged N,N'-O(DBA)2-(PPAB)2, 3), N,N'-DBA-(PPAB)2 (4), N-DBB-PPAB (5), N-PPB-PPAB (7) and N-BBrPh-PPBA (9). Stepwise reduction of 4 yields the corresponding stable radical anion 4˙- and dianion 42-. One-electron reduction of 5 with KC8 yields the purple radical anion 5˙-, which forms a highly insoluble coordination polymer. 5˙- undergoes very slow radical intramolecular ortho-C-H activation at the C4-phenyl substituent of the PPAB moiety, yielding a BN-analogue of the 5,5'-spiro-bi[dibenzoborole] anion, [6]K. Compound 7 cannot be isolated and undergoes spontaneous and diastereoselective 2,5-anti-addition of the ortho-C-H bond of the PPAB C4-phenyl substituent to yield a novel BNB-analogue of the triply fused dihydrocyclopenta[l]phenanthrene cation, compound 8. Finally the one-electron reduction of 9 results in the ortho-C-H activation of the PPAB C4-phenyl substituent at an in situ-generated dicoordinate boryl anion (10), resulting in the formation of a BNB-analogue of 9H-fluorene, the borate 11-. DFT calculations provide a rationale for the diverse C-H activations observed in these reactions.

Abstract
The B2,N4-doped heptacene H4 in which two N,N'-dihydrophenazine units are linked by two BMes bridges (Mes = mesityl) was synthesized via fourfold Buchwald-Hartwig coupling between 2,3,6,7-tetrachloro-9,10-dimesityl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracene and o-phenylenediamine (tBuXPhos-Pd-G3, DBU/NaOTf, 2-MeTHF, 50 °C, 16 h). Upon exposure to ambient air, H4 is oxidized to its N,N'-dihydro form H2; further oxidation with MnO2 furnishes the di(phenazine) derivative H0. Stirring under a blanket of H2 in the presence of Pd/C hydrogenates H0 back to H2 and ultimately H4. Yellow-colored H0 is a remarkably good electron acceptor with a LUMO-energy level of -3.9 eV; upon irradiation with a 405 nm LED in the presence of THF or 1,4-cyclohexadiene, H0 accepts two H atoms to furnish H2. One-electron reduction of H0 yields the isolable radical-anion salt Li[H0] (lithium naphthalenide, THF, -30 °C to rt). The ambipolar compounds H2 and H4 possess a navy blue and deep purple color, respectively, due to charge-transfer interactions from the electron-rich N,N'-dihydrophenazine donor(s) to the electron-accepting B2C4 core.

Abstract
A cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC)-stabilized 1,4-diborabenzene (DBB, 1) reacts with the group 10 precursor [Ni(CO)4] to yield the DBB pogo-stick complex [(η6-DBB)Ni(CO)] (2) as a dark-green crystalline solid. The IR-spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic data of 2 highlight the strong π-donor properties of the DBB ligand. The reaction of 1 with [M(nbe)2] (M = Pd, Pt; nbe = norbornene) yields the unique zerovalent heavier group 10 arene pogo-stick complexes [(η6-DBB)M(nbe)] (3-M), isolated as dark-purple and black crystalline solids, respectively. 3-Pd and 3-Pt show strong near-IR (NIR) absorptions at 835 and 904 nm, respectively. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations show that these result from the S0→S1 excitation, which corresponds to a transfer of electron density from a metal d orbital aligned with the z direction (dxz or dyz) to a d orbital located in the xy plane (dxy or dx2-y2), with the redshift for 3-Pt resulting from the higher spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In complex 2, electron donation from the nickel center into the carbonyl 2π* orbital destabilizes the DBB···Ni interaction, resulting in an absorption at a higher energy. Complexes 2 and 3-M react with [Fe(CO)5] to yield the doubly CO-bridged M(0)→Fe(0) (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) metal-only Lewis pairs (MOLPs) 4-M as black (M = Ni, Pt) and dark-turquoise (M = Pd) crystalline solids. Furthermore, 3-Pt undergoes oxidative Sn-H addition with Ph3SnH to yield the corresponding Pt(II) stannyl hydride, [(η6-DBB)PtH(SnPh3)] (5).

Silylated and halogenated benzenes 1,2-(Me3Si)2-4,5-X2-C6H2 [X = Br (3), I (4)] are versatile synthetic building blocks. 3 was prepared from known 1,2-(Me3Si)2-4,5-Cl2-C6H2 via C-Cl borylation/bromodeboronation; CuI-catalyzed Br/I exchange on 3 affords 4. 3 or 4 and BBr3 yield 9,10-dibromo-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracenes (DBAs) 7 or 8. The B centers were protected with mesityl (Mes; 9, 10) or 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl (FMes; 11, 12) groups. Abstract
Tricoordinate boron-incorporated π-conjugated systems are widely investigated as optoelectronic materials because of their unique p-π* orbital interactions and high Lewis acidity. Among them, thiophene-fused diborinines are characterized by moderate antiaromaticity and extended conjugation. In this work, we have developed two new dithienodiborinines with C2h and C2v symmetries, which exhibited completely different optical properties. The thiophene-fused diborinines synthesized in this study showed excellent fluorescence properties both in solution and in the solid state, with quantum yields of up to 95%. The high antiaromaticity enhanced the Lewis acidity of the boron centers, as proven by the large association constants with fluoride ion estimated from titration experiments. The high Lewis acidity and the superior luminescence property have enabled their application as fluorescent sensor materials for the detection of ammonia vapor.

Abstract
9,10-Diboratatriptycene salts M2[RB(μ-C6H4)3BR] (R = H, Me; M+ = Li+, K+, [n-Bu4N]+) have been synthesized via [4 + 2] cycloaddition between doubly reduced 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracenes M2[DBA] and benzyne, generated in situ from C6H5F and C6H5Li or LiN(i-Pr)2. [HB(μ-C6H4)3BH]2- reacts with CH2Cl2 to form quantitatively the bridgehead-derivatized [ClB(μ-C6H4)3BCl]2-, while twofold H- abstraction with B(C6F5)3 in the presence of SMe2 leads cleanly to the diadduct (Me2S)B(μ-C6H4)3B(SMe2). Photoisomerization of K2[HB(μ-C6H4)3BH] (THF, medium-pressure Hg lamp) provides facile access to diborabenzo[a]fluoranthenes, a little explored form of boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. According to DFT calculations, the underlying reaction mechanism consists of three main steps: (i) photoinduced di-π-borate rearrangement, (ii) "walk reaction" of a BH unit, and (iii) boryl anion-like C-H activation.

Abstract
A method for the synthesis of substituted 1,2,4,5-oxadiazaboroles is described, in which hydroxylamines, nitriles, and diarylborinic acids engage in a three-component condensation reaction. The protocol provides access to a substitution pattern that is not readily available through other methods—namely, 2,3-disubstitution, with a tetracoordinate boron center. Structures of representative members of this class of heterocycles were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
The syntheses, molecular structures, reactivities, and computational assessment of dipotassium diboratapentacene isomers are described (1 and 2). These compounds represent the first examples of aromatized diboraacenes where the boron atoms are spatially separated in different rings of the acene framework. Both 1 and 2 react with carbon dioxide (CO2) via diastereoselective carboxylation of the pentacene backbone that likely proceeds by a frustrated Lewis pair-like mechanism. The placement of the boron atoms and the reactivity studies provide a platform for later stage functionalization of diboraacenes beyond the central ring of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon core.

Abstract
The reactivity of pnictinidenes [2-(DippN=CH)-6-(DippNHCH2 )C6 H3 ]E (where E=As (1) or Sb (2)) toward substituted ortho- and para-quinones is reported. The central pnictogen atom is easily oxidized by ortho-quinones closing five-membered EO2 C2 ring. The oxidized antimony derivatives are stable species, while in the case of arsenic compounds the hydrogen of the pendant amino NHCH2 group cleaves one newly formed As-O bonds leading to the closure of a new azaarsole ring. Furthermore, a heating of these arsenic heterocycles resulted in a C-H bond activation at the NCH2 group involved in this heterocycle followed by a reductive elimination of corresponding catechols and arsinidene [2,6-(DippN=CH)C6 H3 ]As. Using of para-quinones, resulted in the oxidation of the central atom with a concomitant hydrogen migration from NHCH2 group even in the case of the antimony derivatives. The reductive elimination of hydroquinones is in this case feasible for all compounds. Studied compounds were characterized by multi-nuclear NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The theoretical study focusing the key compounds and reactions is also included.

Abstract
Alkali-metal salts of 9,10-dimethyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthrancene (M2[DBA-Me2]; M+ = Li+, Na+, K+) activate the H-B bond of pinacolborane (HBpin) in THF already at room temperature. For M+ = Na+, K+, the addition products M2[4] are formed, which contain one new H-B and one new B-Bpin bond; for M+ = Li+, the H- ion is instantaneously transferred from the DBA-Me2 unit to another equivalent of HBpin to afford Li[5]. Although Li[5] might commonly be considered a [Bpin]- adduct of neutral DBA-Me2, it donates a [Bpin]+ cation to Li[SiPh3], generating the silyl borane Ph3Si-Bpin; Li2[DBA-Me2] with an aromatic central B2C4 ring acts as the leaving group. Furthermore, Li2[DBA-Me2] catalyzes the hydroboration of various unsaturated substrates with HBpin in THF. Quantum-chemical calculations complemented by in situ NMR spectroscopy revealed two different mechanistic scenarios that are governed by the steric demand of the substrate used: in the case of the bulky Ph(H)C[double bond, length as m-dash]NtBu, the reaction requires elevated temperatures of 100 °C, starts with H-Bpin activation which subsequently generates Li[BH4], so that the mechanism eventually turns into "hidden borohydride catalysis". Ph(H)C[double bond, length as m-dash]NPh, Ph2C[double bond, length as m-dash]O, Ph2C[double bond, length as m-dash]CH2, and iPrN[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]NiPr undergo hydroboration already at room temperature. Here, the active hydroboration catalyst is the [4 + 2] cycloadduct between the respective substrate and Li2[DBA-Me2]: in the key step, attack of HBpin on the bridging unit opens the bicyclo[2.2.2]octadiene scaffold and gives the activated HBpin adduct of the Lewis-basic moiety that was previously coordinated to the DBA-B atom.

Abstract
Structural features and reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) formed by pyramidal group 13 Lewis acids based on 9-bora and 9-alatriptycene and bulky phosphines P t Bu3, PPh3, and PCy3 are considered at the M06-2X/def2-TZVP level of theory. Classic FLP is formed only in the B(C6Me4)3CH/P t Bu3 system, while both FLP and donor-acceptor (DA) complex are observed in the B(C6F4)3CF/P t Bu3 system. Formation of DA complexes was observed in other systems; the B(C6H4)3CH·P t Bu3 complex features an elongated DA bond and can be considered a "latent" FLP. Transition states and reaction pathways for molecular hydrogen activation have been obtained. Processes of heterolytic hydrogen splitting are energetically more favored in solution compared to the gas phase, while activation energies in the gas phase and in solution are close. The alternative processes of hydrogenation of B-C or Al-C bonds in the source pyramidal Lewis acids in the absence of a Lewis base are exergonic but have larger activation energies than those for heterolytic hydrogen splitting. The tuning of Lewis acidity of 9-boratriptycene by changing the substituents allows one to control its reactivity with respect to hydrogen activation. Interestingly, the most promising system from the practical point of view is the DA complex B(C6H4)3CH·P t Bu3, which is predicted to provide both low activation energy and thermodynamic reversibility of the heterolytic hydrogen splitting process. It appears that such "not so frustrated" or "latent" FLPs are the best candidates for reversible heterolytic hydrogen splitting.

Abstract
2,3-Difluoro-5,14-dihydro-5,14-diborapentacene (DBP) was endowed with two vicinal Ph2 P groups by an SN Ar reaction at both CF sites using Ph2 PSiMe3 . Computations reveal the ambipolar product P to undergo P-to-B charge transfer under ambient light irradiation. Consequently, P is prone to photooxidation by air, yielding the Ph2 P(O) species PO. With S8 or [Me3 O][BF4 ], P furnishes the Ph2 P(S) or Ph2 P(Me)+ derivatives PS or [PMe][BF4 ]2 . Along the series P, PO, PS, and [PMe][BF4 ]2 , the redox potentials shift anodically from E1/2 =-1.89 V to -1.02 V (CH2 Cl2 ). Thus, derivatization of the Ph2 P group allows late-stage modulation of the LUMO-energy level of the DBP. Derivatization also influences the emission properties of the compounds, as PO shows green (521 nm) and [PMe][BF4 ]2 red (622 nm) fluorescence in C6 H6 , while P and PS are dark. With CuBr and AgBr, P forms dimeric [M(μ-Br)]2 complexes [PCu]2 and [PAg]2 , which show pronounced metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), making P a promising ligand for photocatalysts.

Abstract
![]()
Dimeric aminoboranes,
[H2BNR2]2 (R = Me or CH2CH2) containing B2N2 cores, can
be activated by I2, HNTf2 (NTf2 =
[N(SO2CF3)2]), or [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] to form isolable H2B(μ-NR2)2BHX (for X = I or NTf2). For X = [B(C6F5)4]− further reactivity, presumably
between [H2B(μ-NMe2)2BH][B(C6F5)4] and aminoborane, forms a B3N3-based monocation containing a three-center two
electron B-(μ-H)-B moiety. The structures of H2B(μ-NMe2)2BH(I) and [(μ-NMe2)BH(NTf2)]2 indicated a sterically crowded environment
around boron, and this leads to the less common O-bound mode of NTf2 binding. While the iodide congener reacted very slowly with
alkynes, the NTf2 analogues were more reactive, with hydroboration
of internal alkynes forming (vinyl)2BNR2 species
and R2NBH(NTf2) as the major products. Further
studies indicated that the B2N2 core is maintained
during the first hydroboration, and that it is during subsequent steps
that B2N2 dissociation occurs. In the mono-boron
systems, for example, iPr2NBH(NTf2), NTf2 is N-bound; thus, they have less steric
crowding around boron relative to the B2N2 systems.
Notably, the monoboron systems are much less reactive in alkyne hydroboration
than the B2N2-based bis-boranes, despite the
former being three coordinate at boron while the latter are four coordinate
at boron. Finally, these B2N2 electrophiles
are much more prone to dissociate into mono-borane species than pyrazabole
[H2B(μ-N2C3H3)]2 analogues, making them less useful for the directed diborylation
of a single substrate.

Abstract
Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a three‐dimensional (3D) inorganic analogue of 9,10‐diazido‐9,10‐dihydrodiboraantracene, which turned out to be a monomer in both the solid and solution state, and thermally stable up to 230 °C, representing a rare example of azido borane with boosted Lewis acidity and stability in one. Apart from the classical acid‐base and Staudinger reactions, E−H bond activation (E=B, Si, Ge) was investigated. While the reaction with B−H (9‐borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane) led directly to the 1,1‐addition on Nα upon N2 elimination, the Si−H (Et3SiH, PhMe2SiH) activation proceeded stepwise via 1,2‐addition, with the key intermediates 5int and 6int being isolated and characterized. In contrast, the cooperative Ge−H was reversible and stayed at the 1,2‐addition step.

Abstract
Boron-embedded heteroacenes (boraacenes) have attracted enormous interest in organic chemistry and materials science. However, extending the skeleton of boraacenes to higher acenes (N≥6) is synthetically challenging because of their limited stability under ambient conditions. Herein, we report the synthesis of boron-embedded heptacene (DBH) and nonacene (DBN) as the hitherto longest boraacenes. The former is highly stable (even after 240 h in tetrahydrofuran), while the latter is air-sensitive with the half-life (t1/2 ) of 11.8 min. The structures of both compounds are verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing a linear backbone with an antiaromatic C4 B2 core. Photophysical characterizations associated with theoretical calculations indicate that both compounds exhibit highly efficient anti-Kasha emissions. Remarkably, the air-stable DBH manifests an ultrahigh photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 98±2 % and can be chemically reduced to its radical anion and dianion states, implying the value of boron-doped higher acenes as novel functional materials.

Abstract
Two challenging but rewarding topics in chemical synthesis are C-F-bond activation and the development of B-centered nucleophiles. We have now tackled both subjects simultaneously by forming aryl-B bonds via SNAr-type reactions on fluorobenzenes under mild conditions using Na2[FluBBFlu], Li2[HBFlu], and Li2[Me2DBA] (BFlu = 9-borafluorenyl, Me2DBA = 9,10-dimethyl-9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracene).

Abstract
In the last two decades, boron-based catalysis has been gaining increasing traction in the field of organic synthesis. The use of halogenated triarylboranes as main group Lewis acid catalysts is an attractive strategy. It has been applied in a growing number of transformations over the years, where they may perform comparably or even better than the gold standard catalysts. This review discusses methods of borane synthesis and cutting-edge boron-based Lewis acid catalysis, focusing especially on tris(pentafluorophenyl)-borane [B(C6F5)3], and other halogenated triarylboranes, highlighting how boron Lewis acids employed as catalysts can unlock a plethora of unprecedented chemical transformations or improve the efficiency of existing reactions.

Abstract
Abstract
Based on the previously described bifunctional Lewis acid with a functional distance of the boron functions of 4.918(2) Å, the development of a further bifunctional, boron-containing Lewis acid with a wider functional distance is demonstrated. Again, a stannylated precursor was used and the Lewis-acidic boron functions were introduced by means of tin-boron exchange. The general suitability of this class of compounds for the formation of host-guest-complexes is demonstrated by NMR experiments and by solid-state structures using pyridine and TMPD (N

Abstract
Generation of dihydrogen from water splitting, also known as water reduction, is a key process to access a sustainable hydrogen economy for energy production and usage. The key step is the selective reduction of a protic hydrogen to an accessible and reactive hydride, which has proven difficult at a p-block element. Although frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry is well known for water activation by heterolytic H-OH bond cleavage, to the best of our knowledge, there has been only one case showing water reduction by metal-free FLP systems to date, in which silylene (SiII) was used as the Lewis base. This work reports the molecular design and synthesis of an ortho-phenylene linked bisborane-functionalized phosphine, which reacts with water stoichiometrically to generate H2 and phosphine oxide quantitatively under ambient conditions. Computational investigations revealed an unprecedented multi-centered electron relay mechanism offered by the molecular framework, shuttling a pair of electrons from hydroxide (OH-) in water to the separated proton through a borane-phosphonium-borane path. This simple molecular design and its water reduction mechanism opens new avenues for this main-group chemistry in their growing roles in chemical transformations.

Abstract
Starting from 1,2-diethynylbenzene, a series of bidentate Lewis acids was prepared by means of hydrometalations, in particular hydrosilylation, hydroboration, hydroalumination and terminal metalation based on group 13 and 14 elements. In the case of terminal alkyne metalation, the Lewis-acidic gallium function was introduced using triethylgallium under alkane elimination. A total of six different Lewis acids based on a semiflexible organic scaffold were prepared, bearing -SiClMe2 , -SiCl2 Me, -SiCl3 , -B(C6 F5 )2 , -AlBis2 (Bis=bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl) and -GaEt2 as the corresponding functional units. In all cases, the Lewis acid functionalisation was carried out twice and the products were obtained in good to excellent yields. In the case of the twofold gallium Lewis acid, a different structural motif in the form of a polymer-like chain was observed in the solid state. All new bidentate Lewis acids were characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, CHN analysis and X-ray diffraction experiments.

Abstract
One-electron chemical reduction of 10-(dimesitylboryl)-N,N-di-p-tolylbenzo[c]phenanthrene-4-amine (3-B(Mes)2-[4]helix-9-N(p-Tol)2) 1 and 13-(dimesitylboryl)-N,N-di-p-tolyldibenzo[c,g]phenanthrene-8-amine (3-B(Mes)2-[5]helix-12-N(p-Tol)2) 2 gives rise to monoanions with extensive delocalization over the annulated helicene rings and the boron p z orbital. Two-electron chemical reduction of 1 and 2 produces open-shell biradicaloid dianions with temperature-dependent population of the triplet states due to small singlet-triplet gaps. These results have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, EPR and UV/vis-NIR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations.

The intriguing (μ‐hydrido)diboranes(4) with their prominent pristine representative [B2H5]− have mainly been studied theoretically. We now describe the behavior of the planarized tetraaryl (μ‐hydrido)diborane(4) anion [1H]− in cycloaddition reactions with the homologous series of heterocumulenes CO2, iPrNCO, and iPrNCNiPr. We show that a C=O bond of CO2 selectively activates the B−B bond of [1H]−, while the μ‐H ligand is left untouched ([2H]−). The carbodiimide iPrNCNiPr, in contrast, neglects the B−B bond and rather adds the B‐bonded H− ion to its central C atom to generate a formamidinate bridge across the B2 pair ([3]−). As a hybrid, the isocyanate iPrNCO combines the reactivity patterns of both its congeners and gives two products: one of them ([4H]−) is related to [2H]−, the other ([5]−) is an analog of [3]−. We finally propose a mechanistic scenario that rationalizes the individual reaction outcomes and combines them to a coherent picture of B–B vs. B–H bond activation.

Abstract
The three-dimensional inorganic analogues of 9,10-diboraanthracene, B2X2(C2B10H10)2 (X = Cl, 1; X = Br, 2), were attained by salt elimination of Li2C2B10H10 and trihaloboranes. The methyl- and phenyl-substituted compounds B2Me2(C2B10H10)2 (3) and B2Ph2(C2B10H10)2 (4) were obtained by treating 1 or 2 with the corresponding Grignard reagents. These compounds were fully characterized by NMR, cyclic voltammetry (CV), IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Experimental (CV and Gutmann-Beckett method) and computational (fluoride ion affinity, hydride ion affinity and LUMO energy) results suggest that the order of Lewis acidity is 2 > 1 > 4 > 3 > SbF5. Treatment of 1 or 2 with HSiEt3 gave a rare neutral borane-silane adduct, (Et3SiH)2B2H2(C2B10H10)2 (5). The equilibrium of 5 in solution was thoroughly investigated by spectroscopy and quantum calculations.

C bonds with −BN+ bonds in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a widely used tool to prepare novel optoelectronic materials. Far less well explored are corresponding B,O-doped PAHs, although they have a similarly high application potential. We herein report on the modular synthesis of B,N- and B,O-doped PAHs through the [Au(PPh3)NTf2]-catalyzed 6-endo-dig cyclization of BN–H and BO–H bonds across suitably positioned C

C bonds in the key step. Readily available, easy-to-handle o-alkynylaryl boronic and borinic acids serve as starting materials, which are either cyclized directly or first converted into the corresponding aminoboranes and then cyclized. The reaction even tolerates bulky mesityl substituents on boron, which later kinetically protect the formed B,N/O-PAHs from hydrolysis or oxidation. Our approach is also applicable for the synthesis of rare doubly B,N/O-doped PAHs. Specifically, we prepared 1,2-B,E-naphthalenes and -anthracenes, 1,5-B2-2,6-E2-anthracenes (E = N, O) as well as B,O2-containing and unprecedented B,N,O-containing phenalenyls. Selected examples of these compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography; their optoelectronic properties have been studied by cyclic voltammetry, electron spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. Using a new unsubstituted (B,O)2-perylene as the substrate for late-stage functionalization, we finally show that the introduction of two pinacolatoboryl (Bpin) substituents is possible in high yield and with perfect regioselectivity via an Ir-catalyzed C–H borylation approach. Singly and doubly B,E-doped PAHs were synthesized using a protocol that starts from easy-to-handle boronic and borinic acids and offers the possibility to choose between the preparation of B,O- and B,N-PAHs in the final reaction step.![]()
