Catalytic Methods for Imine Synthesis

Three-Component Construction of Mesoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Incorporation into Solid Polymer Electrolytes for Li-Ion Conduction

Solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and satisfactory electrochemical stability are essential for the development of solid-state batteries. However, current strategies, including polymer (and polymer-based composite) electrolytes, still face challenges in meeting the bar set by real operations. We seek to improve the Li-ion conduction of the electrolytes by incorporating mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into the polymer matrix. Specifically, MOFs with pores larger than 3.0 nm are constructed by three-component reactions that involve the construction of both coordinative and dynamic imine linkages. The MOFs allow polymer penetration and amorphization and efficient lithium salt dissociation in the confined channels. Numerous metal sites and organic functionalities in the MOF backbone further assist the ion migration by providing strong interactions with the fluorinated polymer and the Li+. Remarkable ionic conductivity (0.95 mS cm-1) and a large lithium transference number (0.64) are achieved. Overall, the study fully utilizes both the MOF structural units with atomic precision and the encompassed space at the mesoscale for solid-state electrolyte development.

Copper Phenylacetylide and TiO2 Modification for an Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Oxidative Coupling of Amines

The selective oxidation of amines to imines under mild conditions has attracted much attention. Our study reveals that copper phenylacetylide (PhC2Cu) could serve as an efficient photocatalyst for imine synthesis under visible-light irradiation (>400 nm). Utilizing benzylamine as a model reactant, PhC2Cu achieves an imine yield of 50.4%, which is 5 times higher than that of P25 under the same conditions and comparable to the yield obtained by the 3 wt % Au/P25 photocatalyst (55.4%). Further loading 3.9 nm TiO2 onto PhC2Cu through tetrabutyl titanate hydrolysis increases the imine yield to 84.7%, with a Ti:Cu atomic ratio of 3.65%. Control experiments, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, optical pump terahertz probe (OPTP) spectra, and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests confirm that the optimized TiO2 modification promotes the separation of excited carriers and electron transfer in PhC2Cu and facilitates the activation of surface oxygen, thereby enhancing the formation of superoxide radicals, a key active oxygen species in the reaction system. This work presents a promising strategy for efficient imine synthesis via amine coupling and expands the application field of PhC2Cu-based photocatalysts.

New Water-Soluble (Iminomethyl)benzenesulfonates Derived from Biogenic Amines for Potential Biological Applications

In this paper, a highly efficient and straightforward method for synthesizing novel Schiff bases was developed by reacting selected biogenic amines with sodium 2-formylbenzene sulfonate and sodium 3-formylbenzene sulfonate. 1H and 13C NMR, IR spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry were used to characterize the new compounds. The main advantages of the proposed procedure include simple reagents and reactions carried out in water or methanol and at room temperature, which reduces time and energy. Moreover, it was shown that the obtained water-soluble Schiff bases are stable in aqueous solution for at least seven days. Additionally, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of synthesized Schiff bases were tested.

Green imine synthesis from amines using transition metal and micellar catalysis

Imines are a versatile class of chemicals with applications in pharmaceuticals and as synthetic intermediates. While imines are conventionally synthesized via aldehyde-amine condensation, their direct preparation from amines can avoid the need for the independent preparation of the aldehyde coupling partner and associated constraints with regard to aldehyde storage and purification. The direct preparation of imines from amines typically utilizes transition metal catalysis and is often well-aligned with green chemistry principles. This review provides a comprehensive overview of transition metal catalysed imine synthesis, with a particular focus on the copper-catalyzed oxidative coupling of amines. The emerging application of micellar catalysis for imine synthesis is also surveyed due to its potential to avoid the use of hazardous solvents and intensify these reactions through reduced catalyst loadings and locally increased reactant concentrations. Future directions relating to the confluence of these two areas are proposed towards the more sustainable preparation of imines.

Tailoring flavin-based photosensitizers for efficient photooxidative coupling of benzylic amines

Photooxidative coupling of benzylic amines using naturally abundant O2 as an oxidant under visible light irradiation is an alternative green approach to synthesis imines and is of both fundamental and practical significance. We investigated the photophysical properties of flavin (FL) that is a naturally available sensitizer and its derivatives, i.e. 9-bromoflavin (MB-FL), 7,8-dibromoflavin (DB-FL) and 10-phenylflavin (Ph-FL), as well as the performance of these FL-based sensitizers (FLPSs) in the photooxidative coupling of benzylic amines to imines combining experimental and theoretical efforts. We showed that chemical functionalization with Br and phenyl effectively improves the photophysical properties of these FLPSs, in terms of absorption in the visible light range, singlet oxygen quantum yields, triplet lifetime, etc. Apart from nearly quantitative selectivity for the production of imines, the performance of DB-FL is superior to those of other FLPSs, and it is among the best photocatalysts for imine synthesis. Specifically, 0.5 mol% DB-FL is capable of converting 91% of 0.2 mmol benzylamine and more than 80% of 0.2 mmol fluorobenzylic amine derivatives into their corresponding imines in 5 h batch runs. Mechanistic investigation finely explained the observed photophysical properties of FLPSs and highlighted the dominant role of electron transfer in FLPS sensitized coupling of benzylic amines to imines. This work not only helps to understand the pathways for photocatalysis with FLPSs but also paves the way for the design of novel and efficient PSs to promote organic synthesis.

Selective aerobic coupling of amines to imines using solar spectrum-responsive flower-like Nen-graphene quantum dots (GQDs) decorated with 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (PH) as a photocatalyst

Indeed, the development of ecologically benign molecular fabrication methods for highly efficient graphene quantum dots-based photocatalysts is of great significant. Graphene quantum dots-based photocatalysts have promising applications in various field, including environmental remediation, energy conversion, and splitting of water. However, ensuring resource reusability and minimizing the environmental impact are crucial considerations in the development. From this perspective, attention has also been paid to the creation of easy to make solar light harvesting graphene quantum dots-based photocatalysts for synthesising pharmaceuticals and functional imines compounds. Imines are excellent significant building blocks in pharmaceutical chemistry and excellent examples of these valuable compounds' synthetic intermediates, and the environmentally friendly oxidative synthesis of imines from amines. Therefore, herein, we designed a facile and efficient condensation route to synthesize the Nen-GQDs@PH photocatalyst. This route involves coupling of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (PH) with nitrogen-enriched graphene quantum dots (Nen-GQDs). The Nen-GQDs@PH as photocatalyst functions in a highly selective and efficient manner, leading to high amines conversion efficiency to imines (95%). Our results highlight a novel and environmentally safe approach for generating highly selective imines from various types of amines, setting a new benchmark in the current research field.

Developing a fast and catalyst-free protocol to form C=N double bond with high functional group tolerance

The carbon-nitrogen double bond (C=N) is a fundamentally important functional group in organic chemistry. This is largely due to the fact that C=N acts as electrophilic synthon to give nitrogen-containing compounds. Here, we report the condensation of primary amine or hydrazine with very electron-deficient aldehyde to form C=N bond in the absence of any catalysts (metals and acids). The protocol performs at room temperature and applies water as co-solvent. Two hundred examples are presented here. With its intrinsic advantages of wide substrate scopes, excellent efficiency (high yields and short reaction time), operational simplicity, mild condition (room temperature as reaction temperature, no catalysts, no additions, water as co-solvent and opening to air) and available starting materials, the protocol can be compatible with various drugs, prodrugs, dyes and pharmacophores containing primary amino group. In addition, we also successfully apply this protocol to rapidly synthesize the core scaffolds of bioactive molecules.

Thermodynamic Evaluations of Amines as Hydrides or Two Hydrogen Ions Reductants and Imines as Protons or Two Hydrogen Ions Acceptors, as Well as Their Application in Hydrogenation Reactions

Since the hydrogenation of imines (X) and the dehydrogenation of amines (XH2) generally involve the two hydrogen ions (H- + H+) transfer, the thermodynamic abilities of various amines releasing hydrides or two hydrogen ions as well as various imines accepting protons or two hydrogen ions are important and characteristic physical parameters. In this work, the pKa values of 84 protonated imines (XH+) in acetonitrile were predicted. Combining Gibbs free energy changes of amines releasing hydrides in acetonitrile from our previous work with the pKa(XH+) values, the Gibbs free energy changes of amines releasing two hydrogen ions and imines accepting two hydrogen ions were derived using Hess's law by constructing thermochemical cycles, and the thermodynamic evaluations of amines as hydrides or two hydrogen ions reductants and imines as protons or two hydrogen ions acceptors are well compared and discussed. Eventually, the practical application of thermodynamic data for amines and imines on hydrogenation feasibility, mechanism, and possible elementary steps was shown and discussed in this paper from the point of thermodynamics.

Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Confined in Doped Mesoporous Carbons: A Strategy to Produce Catalysts for Imine Synthesis

A group of (doped N or P) carbons were synthesized using soluble starch as a carbon precursor. Further, ceria nanoparticles (NPs) were confined into these (doped) carbon materials. The obtained solids were characterized by various techniques such as N2 physisorption, XRD, TEM, SEM, XPS, and XAS. These materials were used as catalysts for the oxidative coupling between benzyl alcohol and aniline as the model reaction. Ceria immobilized on mesoporous-doped carbon shows higher activity than the other materials, benchmark catalysts, and most of the previously reported catalysts. The control of the ceria NP size, the presence of Ce3+ cations, and an increment in the disorder in the ceria NP structure caused by a support-ceria interaction could increase the number of oxygen vacancies and improve its catalytic performance. CN-meso/CeO2 was also used as the catalyst for a rich scope of substrates, such as substituted aromatic alcohols, linear alcohols, and different types of amines. The influence of various reaction parameters (substrate content, reaction temperature, and catalyst content) on the activity of this catalyst was also checked.

Dynamic PEG-PLA/Hydroxyurethane Networks Based on Imine Bonds as Reprocessable Elastomeric Biomaterials

The development of dynamic covalent chemistry opens the way to the design of materials able to be reprocessed by an internal exchange reaction under thermal stimulus. Imine exchange differs from other exchange reactions by its relatively low temperature of activation. In this study, amine-functionalized star-shaped PEG-PLA and an aldehyde-functionalized hydroxyurethane modifier were combined to produce PEG-PLA/hydroxyurethane networks incorporating imine bonds. The thermal and mechanical properties of these new materials were evaluated as a function of the initial ratio of amine/aldehyde used during synthesis. Rheological analyses highlighted the dynamic behavior of these vitrimers at moderate temperature (60-85 °C) and provided the flow activation energies. Additionally, the reprocessability of these PEG-PLA/hydroxyurethane vitrimers was assessed by comparing the material properties before reshaping and after three reprocessing cycles (1 ton, 1 h, 70 °C). Hence, these materials can easily be designed to satisfy a specific medical application without properties loss. This work opens the way to the development of a new generation of dynamic materials combining degradable PEG-PLA copolymers and hydroxyurethane modifiers, which could find applications in the shape of medical devices on-demand under mild conditions.

Anti-Markovnikov Intermolecular Hydroamination of Alkenes and Alkynes: A Mechanistic View

Hydroamination, the addition of an N-H bond across a C-C multiple bond, is a reaction with a great synthetic potential. Important advances have been made in the last decades concerning catalysis of these reactions. However, controlling the regioselectivity in the amine addition toward the formation of anti-Markovnikov products (addition to the less substituted carbon) still remains a challenge, particularly in intermolecular hydroaminations of alkenes and alkynes. The goal of this review is to collect the systems in which intermolecular hydroamination of terminal alkynes and alkenes with anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity has been achieved. The focus will be placed on the mechanistic aspects of such reactions, to discern the step at which regioselectivity is decided and to unravel the factors that favor the anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity. In addition to the processes entailing direct addition of the amine to the C-C multiple bond, alternative pathways, involving several reactions to accomplish anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity (formal hydroamination processes), will also be discussed in this review. The catalysts gathered embrace most of the metal groups of the Periodic Table. Finally, a section discussing radical-mediated and metal-free approaches, as well as heterogeneous catalyzed processes, is also included.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Coupling of Benzylamine to N-Benzylidene Benzylamine over the Organic-Inorganic Composites F70-TiO2 Based on Fullerenes Derivatives and TiO2

The organic-inorganic composites F70-TiO₂, based on fullerene with carboxyl group derivatives and TiO₂ semiconductor, have been designed and constructed to become an optical-functional photocatalyst via the facile sol-gel method. The composite photocatalyst obtained shows excellent photocatalytic activity for the high-efficiency conversion of benzylamine (BA) to N-benzylidene benzylamine (NBBA) with air pressure at a normal temperature under visible light irradiation. By optimizing the composition, the composites with the 1:15 mass ratio of F70 and TiO₂, denoted as F70-TiO₂(1:15), demonstrated the highest reaction efficiency for benzylamine (>98% conversion) to N-benzylidene benzylamine (>93% selectivity) in this study. However, pure TiO₂ and fullerene derivatives (F70) exhibit decreased conversion (56.3% and 89.7%, respectively) and selectivity (83.8% and 86.0%, respectively). The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and Mott-Schottky experiment's results indicate that the introduction of fullerene derivatives into anatase TiO₂ would greatly broaden the visible light response range and adjust the energy band positions of the composites, enhancing the sunlight utilization and promoting the photogenerated charge (e^--h⁺) separation and transfer. Specifically, a series of results on the in situ EPR tests and the photo-electrophysical experiment indicate that the separated charges from the hybrid could effectively activate benzylamine and O₂ to accelerate the formation of active intermediates, and then couple with free BA molecules to form the desired production of N-BBA. The effective combination, on a molecular scale, between fullerene and titanium dioxide has provided a profound understanding of the photocatalysis mechanism. This work elaborates and makes clear the relationship between the structure and the performance of functional photocatalysts.

Synthesis of 2,4,5-Trisubstituted Oxazoles from Copper-Mediated Benzylic sp3 C-H Aerobic Oxidative Annulation of Ketones and Amines via a Cascade Reaction

The functionalization of sp³ carbons is deemed challenging in synthetic organic chemistry yet has tremendous potential in producing potent organic compounds. A facile synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted oxazoles through an oxidative, copper-catalyzed, and solvent-free annulation is described. Various arylated oxazoles were efficaciously synthesized at a mild temperature from readily available substrates under a molecular oxygen atmosphere. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggested that the reaction proceeds via an anionic-type mechanism and indicated the formation of a keto-imine intermediate. The reaction is notable for the abstraction of six hydrogen atoms, the functionalization of one sp² carbon and two sp³ carbons, and the formation of C-O and C-N bonds.

Innovative green oxidation of amines to imines under atmospheric oxygen

In recent years, the development of environmentally benign molecular construction methods has been of great importance, and especially, resource recycling, high atomic efficiency, and low environmental impact are in high demand. From this point of view, attention has also been focused on the development of one-pot synthesis of pharmaceuticals and functional molecules. Imines are excellent synthetic intermediates of these useful molecules, and the environmentally friendly oxidative synthesis of imines from amines has been energetically developed using oxygen (or air), which is abundantly available on the Earth, as an oxidant. This review focuses on the latest innovative and green oxidation systems of amines to imines under atmospheric oxygen, and their application to one-pot/eco-friendly and sustainable synthesis of pharmaceuticals and functional molecules. In particular, catalytic systems that activate molecular oxygen are categorized and described in detail as transition metal catalytic systems, photoirradiated catalytic systems, and organocatalytic systems.

Effect of Activation Methods of Molecular Sieves on Ketimine Synthesis

Although the use of molecular sieves for imine synthesis is a common protocol, there have been no comprehensive studies on heat-drying methods. This can be crucial for reproducibility. It was found that molecular sieve 5A dried at 160 °C for 5 h under vacuum efficiently promoted the condensation of various ketones and amines to afford even relatively bulky ketimines. Several control experiments and analyses revealed that only a small amount of Brønsted acid sites was important for the activity, rather than dehydration ability. Other types of molecular sieves could be utilized for the reaction after treatment with water followed by heat drying. A continuous-flow acetalization reaction of alcohols using the activated molecular sieve 5A was also demonstrated.

Silver Catalyzed One-Pot Three-Component Synthesis of α-Aminonitriles and Biologically Relevant α-Amino-phosphonates

A simple silver salt (AgSbF6) catalyzed aminophosphonylation and Strecker reaction have been developed and successfully applied to a wide range of substrates (>55 substrates). This solvent-, ligand-, and base-free one-pot three component protocol operates effectively at room temperature to provide diversified α-aminophosphonates and α-aminonitriles, which gave access to the respective α-amino amides. Importantly, the present catalyst system is also capable to produce the rarely reported and biologically relevant aminophosphonates (having anti-leishmanial activity). Further, the mechanistic studies reveal that the present phosphonylation protocol follows a radical pathway.

Controlled Assembly of Ru-Containing Polyoxometalates for Photocatalytic Activity of the Primary Amine Coupling Reaction

Three Ru-induced structural interconversion polyoxometalates (POMs), Na₁₃H₅[Ru₄(H₂O)₂(Cl)₂(WO₂)₄(AsW₉O₃₃)₄]·43H₂O (1), K₅Na₉H₈[Ru₂(WO₂)₄(AsW₉O₃₃)₄]·50H₂O (2), and KNa₁₃H₁₄[(WO₂)₄(AsW₉O₃₃)₄]·34H₂O (3), were successfully synthesized and thoroughly characterized. Interconversion of structures was accomplished by changing the number of active sites for compounds 1-3. All three compounds contain one {As₄W₄₀O₁₄₀} unit, showing similar structural characteristics except for the active center number (Ru). Interestingly, compound 1 [turnover number (TON)= 486; turnover frequency (TOF)= 20 h^-1] showed highly efficient photocatalysis in achieving oxidative coupling of primary amines. Compound 2 (TON = 406, TOF = 17 h^-1) was also found to promote the oxidative coupling with relatively poor efficiency; however, compound 3 (TON = 178; TOF = 7.4 h^-1) had no obvious contribution to the coupling reaction system, and a chain of evidence indicates that the catalytic performances are strongly dependent on element contents of active sites. Furthermore, the Ru-containing POM-based photocatalysts are conveniently recyclable and reusable during the photocatalytic processes. This study demonstrates the possibility of tuning the catalytic efficiency and stability of POM-based photocatalysts by well designing and controlling their structures. The possible reaction mechanism for the photocatalysis synthesis of imine product is also proposed based on experimental studies.

Novel Enzymatic Method for Imine Synthesis via the Oxidation of Primary Amines Using D-Amino Acid Oxidase from Porcine Kidney

During studies on the oxidative cyanation reaction catalyzed by a variant of D-amino acid oxidase from porcine kidney (pkDAO) (Y228L/R283G), an unexpected formation of 1-phenyl-N-(1-phenylethylidene)ethanamine (PPEA) was detected. The optimal reaction conditions for the synthesis of PPEA and the reaction mechanism were investigated using the pkDAO variant. The highest PPEA synthesis was obtained in the reaction with 150 mM (R)-MBA at pH 9.0 and at 20 °C. Since PPEA synthesis proceeded by trapping the intermediate 1-phenylethanimine (1-PEI) by 15N-labeled n-hexylamine, which is not a substrate for the pKDAO variant, it was deduced that PPEA would be synthesized by a nucleophilic substitution of 1-PEI by another molecule of (R)-MBA. PPEA was further identified by its conversion to bis(1-phenylethyl)amine (BPEA) through reduction with NaBH4. Thus, a new enzymatic method of imine synthesis by oxidation of primary amine by the variant pkDAO was achieved for the first time.

Manganese-catalyzed Synthesis of Imines from Primary Alcohols and Aromatic Amines

Herein, we describe the synthesis of a wide variety of imines through oxidative coupling of alcohols and (hetero)aromatic amines catalyzed by Mn complexes bearing N^N triazole ligands. A wide variety of imines in excellent yields (up to 99%) have been prepared. Mn-based catalysts proved to be highly efficient and versatile, allowing for the first time, the preparation of several imines containing N-based heterocycles.

Tuning the Activity-Stability Balance of Photocatalytic Organic Materials for Oxidative Coupling Reactions

Three materials containing a photoactive unit, 10-phenyl phenothiazine (PTH), have been studied for the visible light-mediated oxidative coupling of amines. In particular, the materials considered are assembled through the condensation of extended polyimine, polyhydrazone, or polytriazine frameworks. These three materials present different stabilities in the presence of strong nucleophiles such as amines, which is a key factor for efficient catalytic performance. In the series of materials reported herein, the triazine-based material shows the optimal compromise between activity and stability when studied for the oxidative coupling of amines, achieving imine products. Accordingly, while significant leaching of molecular active fragments is ruled out for triazine-based polymers, other materials of the series show a significant chemical erosion as a result of the reaction with the amine substrates. Consequently, only a triazine-based material allows performing several catalytic cycles (up to seven) with yields higher than 80%. The applicability of this heterogeneous catalyst has been proven with a variety of substrates, confirming its stability and obtaining diverse imine coupling products with excellent yields.

Extended phenothiazines: synthesis, photophysical and redox properties, and efficient photocatalytic oxidative coupling of amines

Herein, we successfully developed a ring-fusion approach to extend the conjugation length of phenothiazines that were demonstrated to be efficient photocatalysts for visible-light-driven oxidative coupling reactions of amines under an air atmosphere.

Excellent Catalytic Performances of a Au/C-CuO Binary System in the Selective Oxidation of Benzylamines to Imines under Atmospheric Oxygen

A green method of the oxidation of benzylamines to imines was developed using a novel binary system of Au/C-CuO. This system was evaluated under atmospheric oxygen, and the corresponding imines were obtained in up to 100% yields by loading 0.006 mol % of Au/C and 1.25 mol % of CuO under mild conditions. This system was also successfully applied to the syntheses of N-containing functional molecules, as well as that of imines on the scale of several grams. Furthermore, the turnover number of the system (more than 8000 times on a gold basis) as well as its ability to be reused more than 10 times for benzylamine oxidation demonstrates the excellent durability and recyclability of the developed system.

Regioselective Mercury(I)/Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Single-Step Approach for the Synthesis of Imines and 2-Substituted Indoles

An efficient synthesis of ketimines was achieved through a regioselective Hg(I)-catalyzed hydroamination of terminal acetylenes in the presence of anilines. The Pd(II)-catalyzed cyclization of these imines into the 2-substituted indoles was satisfactorily carried out by a C-H activation. In a single-step approach, a variety of 2-substituted indoles were also generated via a Hg(I)/Pd(II)-catalyzed, one-pot, two-step process, starting from anilines and terminal acetylenes. The arylacetylenes proved to be more effective than the alkyl derivatives.

Spatial intimacy of binary active-sites for selective sequential hydrogenation-condensation of nitriles into secondary imines

Precisely controlling the spatial intimacy of multiple active sites at sub-nanoscale in heterogeneous catalysts can improve their selectivity and activity. Herein, we realize a highly selective nitrile-to-secondary imine transformation through a cascaded hydrogenation and condensation process by Pt₁/CoBO_x comprising the binary active sites of the single-dispersed Pt and interfacial Lewis acidic B. Atomic Pt sites with large inter-distances (>nanometers) only activate hydrogen for nitrile hydrogenation, but inhibit condensation. Both adjacent B…B on CoBO_x and neighbouring Pt…B pairs with close intimacy of ~0.45 nm can satisfy the spatial prerequisites for condensation. Mechanism investigations demonstrate the energetically favorable pathway occurred on adjacent Lewis acidic B sites through the nitrile adsorption (acid-base interaction), hydrogenation via hydrogen spillover from Pt to B sites and sequential condensation. Strong intermolecular tension and steric hindrance of secondary imines on active sites lead to their effective desorption and thereby a high chemoselectivity of secondary imines.

Precisely controlling the spatial intimacy of multiple active sites in heterogeneous catalysts can significantly affect the selectivity and activity. Here the authors show a binary active site of single atom Pt and Lewis acidic B with spatial intimacy enables a highly selective nitrile-to-secondary imine transformation.

Metal Cation-Driven Dynamic Covalent Formation of Imine and Hydrazone Ligands Displaying Synergistic Co-catalysis and Auxiliary Amine Effects

Optimizing C=N bond formation and C/N component exchange has major significance in Dynamic Covalent Chemistry (DCC). Imine and hydrazone generation from their aldehyde, amine and hydrazine components showed large accelerations in presence of AgOTf or Zn(OTf)₂ , up to 10⁴ for the Zn(II)-(p-anisidine)imine complex. Zn(OTf)₂ and auxiliary p-anisidine together accelerated 630 times the formation of the Zn(II)-hydrazone complex, revealing a strong synergistic effect, traced to very fast initial formation of the reactive Zn(II)-imine complex presenting a C=N bond metallo-activated towards reaction with the hydrazine component. Reactions involving more entities showed kinetically faster and thermodynamically simpler outputs due to dynamic competition within a mixture of higher complexity. Catalytic amounts of metal salts and auxiliary amine gave similar marked rate accelerations and turnover, indicating true catalysis. The synergistic effect achieved by combining metallo- and organo-catalysis points to a powerful co-catalysis strategy of bond-formation in DCC through interconnected chemical transformations.

Atomically Dispersed Vanadium Sites Anchored on N-Doped Porous Carbon for the Efficient Oxidative Coupling of Amines to Imines

Single-atom catalysts effectively integrate the respective advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and are a pioneering research frontier in catalysis by virtue of their maximized utility of metal atoms and distinct atomic configuration. However, development of such catalysts is still in the early stages. Herein, atomically dispersed vanadium (V) sites that are coordinated by N atoms and inlaid within N-incorporated porous carbon networks were prepared through a top-down strategy by annealing a V-containing metal-organic framework, NH₂-MIL-101(V), followed by acid etching. The resulting V-N-C-600 catalyst exhibits unexpected catalytic reactivity, selectivity, and robust stability for the direct aerobic oxidation of benzylamine to generate N-benzylidene benzylamine with molecular oxygen under mild conditions. The turnover frequency reaches 53.9 h^-1, which is much superior to those achieved over the commercial V₂O₅ and state-of-the-art non-noble metal heterogeneous catalysts reported in the literature. Kinetic analysis reveals a low activation energy barrier (37 kJ mol^-1) for the benzylamine oxidation and indicates that a carbocationic intermediate is involved in the reaction mechanism. The synergistic effect between the isolated V single-atomic sites and N-doped hierarchically porous carbon network boosts the performance of V-N-C-600. Moreover, V-N-C-600 exhibits a wide generality for the efficient synthesis of a set of symmetrical imines, unsymmetrical imines, and imine derivatives.

Cyclometalated Half-Sandwich Iridium(III) Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Diverse Catalytic Activity in Imine Synthesis Using Air as the Oxidant

Four air-stable cyclometalated half-sandwich iridium complexes 1-4 with C,N-donor Schiff base ligands were prepared through C-H activation in moderate-to-good yields. These complexes have been well characterized, and their exact structure was elaborated on by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The iridium(III) complexes 1-4 showed good catalytic activity in the imine synthesis under open-flask conditions (air as the oxidant) from primary amine oxidative homocoupling, secondary amine dehydrogenation, and the cross-coupling reaction of amine and alcohol. Substituents bonded on the ligands of the iridium complexes displayed little effect on the catalytic efficiency. The stability and good catalytic efficiency of the iridium catalysts, mild reaction conditions, and substrate universality showed their potential application in industrial production.

The Effects of Crosslinking on the Rheology and Cellular Behavior of Polymer-Based 3D-Multilayered Scaffolds for Restoring Articular Cartilage

Polymer-based tri-layered (bone, intermediate and top layers) scaffolds used for the restoration of articular cartilage were prepared and characterized in this study to emulate the concentration gradient of cartilage. The scaffolds were physically or chemically crosslinked. In order to obtain adequate scaffolds for the intended application, the impact of the type of calcium phosphate used in the bone layer, the polymer used in the intermediate layer and the interlayer crosslinking process were analyzed. The correlation among SEM micrographs, physical-chemical characterization, swelling behavior, rheological measurements and cell studies were examined. Storage moduli at 1 Hz were 0.3-1.7 kPa for physically crosslinked scaffolds, and 4-5 kPa (EDC/NHS system) and 15-20 kPa (glutaraldehyde) for chemically crosslinked scaffolds. Intrinsic viscoelasticity and poroelasticity were considered in discussing the physical mechanism dominating in different time/frequency scales. Cell evaluation showed that all samples are available as alternatives to repair and/or substitute cartilage in articular osteoarthritis.

Tandem imine formation via auto-hydrogen transfer from alcohols to nitro compounds catalyzed by a nanomagnetically recyclable copper catalyst under solvent-free conditions

A direct imination reaction was developed by tandem reaction of alcohols and nitro compounds in the presence of Cu-isatin Schiff base-γ-Fe₂O₃ as a nanomagnetically recyclable catalyst under solvent-free conditions. By this method, various imines were prepared in good to high yields from one-pot reaction of various alcohols (primary aromatic and aliphatic) and nitro compounds (aromatic and aliphatic) via an auto-hydrogen transfer reaction. Use of an inexpensive and easily reusable catalyst, without requiring any additives or excess amounts of benzyl alcohol as the reaction solvent are the other advantages of this method. This catalytic system has the merits of cost effectiveness, environmental benignity, excellent recyclability and good reproducibility.

Oxygen-deficient bismuth molybdate nanocatalysts: Synergistic effects in boosting photocatalytic oxidative coupling of benzylamine and mechanistic insight

Herein, bismuth molybdate (Bi₂MoO₆) nanocatalysts containing oxygen vacancies (OVs) are found to considerably promote the photocatalytic performance toward oxidative coupling of benzylamine to N-benzylidenebenzylamine under visible light irradiation. The structure-activity relationship for this interesting catalyst is revealed for the first time. The oxygen-deficient Bi₂MoO₆ nanoplatelets (BMO-NPs) are synthesized using ethylene glycol-ethanol solvent mixture as a reaction medium in solvothermal method. A comparison with hydrothermally prepared Bi₂MoO₆ square-like sheets (BMO-SHs) suggests that the nanoplatelets are much smaller in size and contain higher amount of OVs. Benzylamine conversion over the BMO-NPs is ca. 4.0 times higher than that over the BMO-SHs and ca. 3.8 and ca. 34.6 times higher than that over the commercial benchmark TiO₂ P25 and BiVO₄ catalysts, respectively. The BMO-NPs achieve more than 80% product yield within 2 h of irradiation regardless of substituents of benzylamine derivatives. The enhanced activity of BMO-NPs is due to synergistic roles of high surface-to-volume ratio and OVs, providing enlarged active area, extended light absorption range and improved charge separation and transfer efficiency as evidenced from UV-vis DRS, BET surface area, photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and time-resolved fluorescence decay measurements. EPR-trapping and radical scavenging experiments indicate O₂^- as a main active species rather than ¹O₂ and a plausible imine formation mechanism via O₂^--assisted charge transfer is proposed accordingly. The work offers an alternative facile preparation method to design efficient semiconductor photocatalysts and for the first time reveals a possible benzylamine coupling mechanism over the oxygen-deficient Bi₂MoO₆ nanocatalyst.
