Abstract
Borepin, a 7-membered boron-containing heterocycle, has become an emerging molecular platform for the development of new materials and optoelectronics. While electron-deficient borepins are well-established, reduced electron-rich species have remained elusive. Herein we report the first isolable, crystalline borepin radical (2 a, 2 b) and anion (3 a, 3 b) complexes, which have been synthesized by potassium graphite (KC8 ) reduction of cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene-dibenzo[b,d]borepin precursors. Borepin radicals and anions have been characterized by EPR or NMR, elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the bonding features have been investigated computationally using density functional theory.

Abstract
Borolides (BC42-) can be considered as dianionic heterocyclic analogues of monoanionic cyclopentadienides. Although both are formally six-π-electron donors, we herein demonstrate that the electronic structure of their corresponding transition metal complexes differs significantly, leading to altered properties. Specifically, the 18-electron sandwich complex Ni(iPr2NBC4Ph2)2 (1) features an ∼90° angle between the Ni-B-N planes and is best described as a combination of three limiting resonance structures with the major contribution stemming from a formally Ni2+ species bound to two monoanionic radical (BC4•-) ligands. Compound 1 displays two sequential one-electron oxidation events over a small potential range of <0.2 V, which strikingly contrasts the large potential separations between redox partners in the family of metallocenes, and the potential reasons for this unusual observation are discussed.

Abstract
Structurally authenticated free B-alkyl boroles are presented and electronic implications of alkyl substitution were assessed. Deprotonation of a boron-bound exocyclic methyl group in a B-methyl borole yields the first 5-boratafulvene anion-an isomer to boratabenzene. Boratafulvene was structurally characterized and its electronic structure probed by DFT calculations. The pKa value of the exocyclic B-CH3 in a set of boroles was computationally approximated and confirmed a pronounced acidic character caused by the boron atom embedded in an anti-aromatic moiety. The non-aromatic boratafulvene reacts as a C-centered nucleophile with the mild electrophile Me3 SnCl to give a stannylmethyl borole, regenerating the anti-aromaticity. As nucleophilic synthons for boroles, boratafulvenes thus open an entirely new avenue for synthetic strategies toward this highly reactive class of heterocycles. Boratafulvene reacts as a methylene transfer reagent in a bora-Wittig-type reaction generating a borole oxide.

Abstract
Cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene-stabilized (cyano)hydroboryl anions were synthesized by deprotonation of (cyano)dihydroborane precursors. While they display boron-centered nucleophilic reactivity towards organohalides, generating fully unsymmetrically substituted cyano(hydro)organoboranes, they show cyano-nitrogen-centered nucleophilic reactivity towards haloboranes, resulting in the formation of hitherto unknown linear 2-aza-1,4-diborabutatrienes.

Abstract
Two-electron reduction of carbene-supported 9-bromo-9-borafluorenes with excess KC8 , Na, or Li-naphthalenide affords six N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)- or cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene (CAAC)-stabilized borafluorene anions (3-8)-the first isolated and structurally authenticated examples of the elusive 9-carbene-9-borafluorene monoanion. The electronic structure, bonding, and aromaticity of the boracyclic anions were comprehensively investigated via computational studies. Compounds 5 and 8 react with metal halides via salt elimination to give new B-E (E=Au, Se, Ge)-containing materials (9-12). Upon reaction with diketones, the carbene ligand cleanly dissociates from 5 or 8 to yield new B-O containing spirocycles (13-14) that cannot be easily obtained using "normal" valent borafluorene compounds. Collectively, these results support the notion that carbene-stabilized monoanionic borafluorenes may serve as a new platform for the one-step construction of higher-value boracyclic materials.

Abstract
This work describes the synthesis and characterization of a highly reactive cationic borole. Halide abstraction with Li{Al[OC(CF3 )3 ]4 } from the NHC-chloroborole adduct yields the first stable NHC-supported 1-(Me NHC)-2,5-(SiMe3 )2 -3,4-(Ph*)2 -borole cation. Electronically, it features both a five-membered cyclic conjugated 4 π-electron system and a cationic charge and thus resembles the yet elusive cyclopentadienyl cation. The borole cation was characterized crystallographically, spectroscopically (NMR, UV/Vis), by cyclovoltammetry, microanalysis and mass-spectrometry and its electronic structure was probed computationally. The cation reacts with tolane and reversibly binds carbon monoxide. Direct comparison with the structurally related, yet neutral, 1-mesityl borole reveals strong Lewis acidity, reduced HOMO-LUMO gaps, and increased anti-aromatic character.

Abstract
The tetraaryl μ‐hydridodiborane(4) anion [2H]− possesses nucleophilic B−B and B−H bonds. Treatment of K[2H] with the electrophilic 9‐H‐9‐borafluorene (HBFlu) furnishes the B3 cluster K[3], with a triangular boron core linked through two BHB two‐electron, three‐center bonds and one electron‐precise B−B bond, reminiscent of the prominent [B3H8]− anion. Upon heating or prolonged stirring at room temperature, K[3] rearranges to a slightly more stable isomer K[3 a]. The reaction of M[2H] (M+=Li+, K+) with MeI or Me3SiCl leads to equimolar amounts of 9‐R‐9‐borafluorene and HBFlu (R=Me or Me3Si). Thus, [2H]− behaves as a masked [:BFlu]− nucleophile. The HBFlu by‐product was used in situ to establish a tandem substitution‐hydroboration reaction: a 1:1 mixture of M[2H] and allyl bromide gave the 1,3‐propylene‐linked ditopic 9‐borafluorene 5 as sole product. M[2H] also participates in unprecedented [4+1] cycloadditions with dienes to furnish dialkyl diaryl spiroborates, M[R2BFlu].

Abstract
Double reduction of the THF adduct of 9H-9-borafluorene (1⋅THF) with excess alkali metal affords the dianion salts M2 [1] in essentially quantitative yields (M=Li-K). Even though the added charge is stabilized through π delocalization, [1]2- acts as a formal boron nucleophile toward organoboron (1⋅THF) and tetrel halide electrophiles (MeCl, Et3 SiCl, Me3 SnCl) to form B-B/C/Si/Sn bonds. The substrate dependence of open-shell versus closed-shell pathways has been investigated.

Abstract
While the one-electron reduction of (CAACMe )BH2 Br (CAACMe =1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-2-ylidene) yields a hydride-shift isomer of the corresponding tetrahydrodiborane, a further reversible reduction leads to the first stable parent boryl anion, [(CAACMe )BH2 ]- , which acts as a powerful boron nucleophile.

Abstract
The first stable anionic aluminium nucleophile was isolated by Goicoechea, Aldridge and co-workers. The aluminyl compound showed very high reactivity in metathesis reactions as well as in the oxidative addition of substrates such as dihydrogen and benzene, which opens up new perspectives in main group chemistry.

Abstract
Free borylenes (R-B:) have only been spectroscopically characterized in the gas phase or in matrices at very low temperatures. However, in recent years, a few mono- and bis(Lewis base)-stabilized borylenes have been isolated. In both of these compounds the boron atom is in the formal oxidation state +I which contrasts with classical organoboron derivatives wherein the element is in the +III oxidation state. Mono(Lewis base)-stabilized borylenes are isoelectronic with singlet carbenes, and their reactivity mimics to some extent that of transition metals. They can activate small molecules, such as H2 , and coordinate an additional ligand; in other words, they are boron metallomimics. Bis(Lewis base)borylene adducts are isoelectronic with amines and phosphines. In contrast to boranes, which act as electron acceptors and thus Lewis acids, they are electron-rich and act as ligands for transition metals.

Abstract
The first deprotonation of a borohydride anion was achieved by treatment of [BH(CN)3 ]- with strong non-nucleophilic bases, which resulted in the formation of alkali-metal salts of the tricyanoborate dianion B(CN)32- in up to 97 % yield and 99.5 % purity. [BH(CN)3 ]- is less acidic than (Me3 Si)2 NH but a stronger acid than iPr2 NH. Less sterically hindered, more nucleophilic bases such as PhLi and MeLi mostly attack a CN group under formation of imine dianions [RC(N)B(CN)3 ]2- , which can be hydrolyzed to ketones of the [RC(O)B(CN)3 ]- type. The boron-centered nucleophile B(CN)32- reacts with CO2 and CN+ reagents to give salts of the [B(CN)3 CO2 ]2- dianion and the tetracyanoborate anion [B(CN)4 ]- , respectively, in excellent yields.

Abstract
An electron-rich monovalent boron compound is used as a Lewis base to prepare adducts with Group 13 Lewis acids using both its boron and nitrogen sites. The hard Lewis acid AlCl3 binds through a nitrogen atom of the Lewis base, while softer Lewis acids GaX3 (Cl, Br, I) bind at the boron atom. The latter are the first noncluster Lewis adducts between a boron-centered Lewis base and a main-group Lewis acid.

Abstract
Access to novel imine-substituted 1,2-azaborinines, as well as highly arylated boracyclohexa-3,5-dienes has been developed by ring expansion of boroles with diazoalkanes with varying degrees of steric bulk. The formation of a diazoalkane intermediate is also discussed for the reaction of ortho-brominated p-tolyl-azide with 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylborole. Structural details as well as UV/Vis spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric data are provided. These boron-containing heterocycles have the potential to serve as building blocks for boron-containing materials.

Abstract
We have exploited the reactivity of antiaromatic boroles, gaining access to aryl-substituted monocyclic 1,2-azaborinines. The observed ring-expansion reaction of inherently electron-deficient boroles with organometallic and organic azides is demonstrated for representative examples. This substance class is expected to provide a new avenue into 1,2-azaborinine chemistry, especially in the area of functional organoboron materials. Our results are based on NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as single-crystal X-ray crystallography and provide a virtually quantitative approach that also offers numerous points of variation.
