Activation of Dihydrogen by Masked Doubly Bonded Aluminum Species

On the Reactivity of Mes*P(PMe3 ) towards Aluminum(I) Compounds - Evidence for the Intermediate Formation of Phosphaalumenes

Phosphaalumenes are the heavier isoelectronic analogs of alkynes and have eluded facile synthesis until recently. We have reported that the combination of a phosphinidene transfer agent, Ar TerP(PMe3 ) (Ar Ter=2,6-Ar2 -C6 H3 ), with (Cp*Al)4 (Cp*=C5 (CH3 )5 ) afforded the phosphaalumenes Ar TerPAlCp* as isolable, violet, thermally stable compounds. In here we describe attempts to utilize Mes*P(PMe3 ) (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu3 -C6 H2 ) as a phosphinidene source in combination with different Al(I) precursors, namely Dip NacnacAl (Dip Nacnac=HC[C(Me)NDip]2 , Dip=2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ), (Cp*Al)4 and Cp3t Al (Cp3t =1,2,4-tBu3 -C5 H2 ). In all cases the formation of phosphaalumenes was not observed, however, their intermediate formation is indicated by formation of the dimer [Cp*Al(μ-PMes*)]2 (2) and C-H-bond activation products along the putative P=Al bond, giving unusual 1,2-P,Al-tetrahydronaphtalene derivatives 1 and 4, clearly underlining the role the sterically demanding group on phosphorus plays in these transformations. The reactivity studies are supported by theoretical studies, demonstrating a thermodynamic preference for the C-H activation products. Additionally, we show that there are potential pitfalls in the synthesis of Cp*2 AlH, the precursor to make (Cp*Al)4 and give recommendations how to circumvent these.

Exploring Equilibria between Aluminium(I) and Aluminium(III): The Formation of Dihydroalanes, Masked Dialumenes and Aluminium(I) Species

The design of new reductive routes to low oxidation state aluminium (Al) compounds offers the opportunity to better understand redox processes at the metal centre and develop reactivity accordingly. Here, a monomeric Al^I compound acts as a stoichiometric reducing agent towards a series of Al^III dihydrides, leading to the formation of new low oxidation state species including symmetric and asymmetric dihydrodialanes, and a masked dialumene. These compounds are formed by a series of equilibrium processes involving Al^I, Al^II and Al^III species and product formation can be manipulated by fine‐tuning the reaction conditions. The transient formation of monomeric Al^I compounds is proposed: this is shown to be energetically viable by computational (DFT) investigations and reactivity studies show support for the formation of Al^I species. Importantly, despite the potential for the equilibrium mixtures to lead to ill‐defined reactivity, controlled reactivity of these low oxidation state species is observed.

A Free Aluminylene with Diverse σ-Donating and Doubly σ/π-Accepting Ligand Features for Transition Metals*

We report herein the synthesis, characterization, and coordination chemistry of a free N-aluminylene, namely a carbazolylaluminylene 2 b. This species is prepared via a reduction reaction of the corresponding carbazolyl aluminium diiodide. The coordination behavior of 2 b towards transition metal centers (W, Cr) is shown to afford a series of novel aluminylene complexes 3-6 with diverse coordination modes. We demonstrate that the tri-active ambiphilic Al center in 2 b can behave as: 1. a σ-donating and doubly π-accepting ligand; 2. a σ-donating, σ-accepting and π-accepting ligand; and 3. a σ-donating and doubly σ-accepting ligand. Additionally, we show ligand exchange at the aluminylene center providing access to the modulation of electronic properties of transition metals without changing the coordinated atoms. Investigations of 2 b with IDippCuCl (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) show an unprecedented aluminylene-alumanyl transformation leading to a rare terminal Cu-alumanyl complex 8. The electronic structures of such complexes and the mechanism of the aluminylene-alumanyl transformation are investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Reversible Dissociation of a Dialumene*

Dialumenes are neutral AlI compounds with Al=Al multiple bonds. We report the isolation of an amidophosphine-supported dialumene. Our X-ray crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational DFT analyses reveal a long and extreme trans-bent Al=Al bond with a low dissociation energy and bond order. In solution, the dialumene can dissociate into monomeric AlI species. Reactivity studies reveal two modes of reaction: as dialumene or as aluminyl monomers.

A Molecular Hybrid of an Atomically Precise Silver Nanocluster and Polyoxometalates for H2 Cleavage into Protons and Electrons

Atomically precise silver (Ag) nanoclusters are promising materials as catalysts, photocatalysts, and sensors because of their unique structures and mixed-valence states (Ag⁺ /Ag⁰ ). However, their low stability hinders the in-depth study of their intrinsic reactivity and catalytic property accompanying their redox processes. Herein, we demonstrate that a molecular hybrid of an atomically precise {Ag₂₇ }¹⁷⁺ nanocluster and polyoxometalates (POMs) can efficiently cleave H₂ into protons and electrons. The Ag nanocluster accommodates electrons through the redox reaction from {Ag₂₇ }¹⁷⁺ to {Ag₂₇ }¹³⁺ , and the POM ligands play the following important roles: (i) a significant stabilization of the typically unstable Ag nanocluster to preserve its structure during the redox reaction with H₂ , (ii) formation of a unique interface between the Ag nanocluster and metal oxides for efficient H₂ cleavage, and (iii) storage of the generated protons on the negatively charged basic surface.

The partial dehydrogenation of aluminium dihydrides

The reactions of a series of β-diketiminate stabilised aluminium dihydrides with ruthenium bis(phosphine), palladium bis(phosphine) and palladium cyclopentadienyl complexes is reported.

The reactions of a series of β-diketiminate stabilised aluminium dihydrides with ruthenium bis(phosphine), palladium bis(phosphine) and palladium cyclopentadienyl complexes is reported. In the case of ruthenium, alane coordination occurs with no evidence for hydrogen loss resulting in the formation of ruthenium complexes with a pseudo–octahedral geometry and cis-relation of phosphine ligands. These new ruthenium complexes have been characterised by multinuclear and variable temperature NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In the case of palladium, a series of structural snapshots of alane dehydrogenation have been isolated and crystallographically characterised. Variation of the palladium precursor and ligand on aluminium allows kinetic control over reactivity and isolation of intermetallic complexes that contain new Pd–Al and Pd–Pd interactions. These complexes differ by the ratio of H : Al (2 : 1, 1.5 : 1 and 1 : 1) with lower hydride content species forming with dihydrogen loss. A combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction studies have been used to interrogate the structures and provide confidence in the assignment of the number and position of hydride ligands. ²⁷Al MAS NMR spectroscopy and calculations (DFT, QTAIM) have been used to gain an understanding of the dehydrogenation processes. The latter provide evidence for dehydrogenation being accompanied by metal–metal bond formation and an increased negative charge on Al due to the covalency of the new metal–metal bonds. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first structural information for intermediate species in alane dehydrogenation including a rare neutron diffraction study of a palladium–aluminium hydride complex. Furthermore, as part of these studies we have obtained the first SS ²⁷Al NMR data on an aluminium(i) complex. Our findings are relevant to hydrogen storage, materials chemistry and catalysis.

Reduction vs. Addition: The Reaction of an Aluminyl Anion with 1,3,5,7-Cyclooctatetraene

The potassium aluminyl complex K[Al(NON^Ar )] (NON=NON^Ar =[O(SiMe₂ NAr)₂ ]^2- , Ar=2,6-iPr₂ C₆ H₃ ) reacts with 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) to give K[Al(NON^Ar )(COT)]. The COT-ligand is present in the asymmetric unit as a planar μ₂ -η² :η⁸ -bridge between Al and K, with additional K⋅⋅⋅π-aryl interactions to neighboring molecules that generate a helical chain. DFT calculations indicate significant aromatic character, consistent with reduction to [COT]^2- . Addition of 18-crown-6 causes a rearrangement of the C₈ -carbocycle to form the isomeric 9-aluminabicyclo[4.2.1]nona-2,4,7-triene anion.

Chelated Diborenes and Their Inverse-Electron-Demand Diels-Alder Reactions with Dienes

A doubly base-stabilised diborane based on a benzylphosphine linker was prepared by a salt elimination reaction between 2-LiC₆ H₄ CH₂ PCy₂ ⋅Et₂ O and B₂ Br₄ . This compound was reduced with KC₈ to its corresponding diborene, with the benzylphosphine forming a five-membered chelate. The diborene reacts with butadiene, 2-trimethylsiloxy-1,3-butadiene, and isoprene to form 4,5-diboracyclohexenes, which interconvert between their 1,1- (geminal) and 1,2- (vicinal) chelated isomers. The 1,1-chelated diborene undergoes a halide-catalysed isomerisation into its thermodynamically favoured 1,2-isomer, which undergoes Diels-Alder reactions more slowly than the kinetic product.

Cleavage of Two Hydrogen Molecules by Boryldisilenes

Activation of H₂ by compounds of main-group elements has received considerable attention. Herein, we report synthesis of novel monoboryl- and monoamino-substituted disilenes and their characterization by a combination of NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The monoboryldisilene reacts with two molecules of H₂ to provide the corresponding trihydridodisilane and hydroborane, whereas the aminodisilene does not react with H₂ under the same conditions. The present results together with our previous results indicate that the presence of the boryl-substituent on the Si=Si double bond is essential to activate the H₂ molecule. The low lying empty 2p orbital on the boron atom that interacts effectively with the π*(Si=Si) orbital could be responsible for the activation of H₂ .
