Abstract
Molecule-inclusive closed cage compounds present a unique platform for molecular motion in an isolated environment. This study showcases the incorporation of a tadpole-like polar molecule (1-propyl-1H-imidazole, PIm) into a supramolecular cage formed by duad semicage p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene. The ferroelectric phase transition as well as the cage-confined motion of encapsulated PIm was studied in detail. The unusual quadrastable state of the PIm in the paraelectric phase allows for the modulation of dipolar polarization over a broad temperature/frequency range. This compound represents the first example of a clathrate molecular ferroelectric featuring a molecule-inclusive supramolecular cage, and it also contributes to the understanding of cage-confined molecular dynamics.

Abstract
2D organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have become one of the hottest research topics due to their excellent environmental stability and unique optoelectronic properties. Recently, the ferroelectricity and thermochromism of 2D OIHPs have attracted increasing interests. Integrating ferroelectricity and thermochromism into perovskites can significantly promote the development of multichannel intelligent devices. Here, a novel 2D Dion-Jacobson OIHP of the formula (3AMP)PbI4 (where 3AMP is 3-(aminomethyl)pyridinium) is reported, which has a remarkable spontaneous polarization value (Ps) of 15.6 µC cm-2 and interesting thermochromism. As far it is known, such a large Ps value is the highest for 2D OIHPs recorded so far. These findings will inspire further exploration and application of multifunctional perovskites.

Abstract
Two-dimensional layered organic-inorganic halide perovskites have successfully spread to diverse optoelectronic applications. Nevertheless, there remain gaps in our understanding of the interactions between organic and inorganic sublattices that form the foundation of their remarkable properties. Here, we examine these interactions using pump-probe spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Unlike off-resonant pumping, resonant excitation of the organic sublattice alters both the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom within the inorganic sublattice, indicating the existence of electronic coupling. Theoretical simulations verify that the reduced bandgap is likely due to the enhanced distortion index of the inorganic octahedra. Further evidence of the mechanical coupling between these two sublattices is revealed through the slow heat transfer process, where the resultant lattice tensile strain launches coherent longitudinal acoustic phonons. Our findings explicate the intimate electronic and mechanical couplings between the organic and inorganic sublattices, crucial for tailoring the optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional halide perovskites.

Abstract
In recent decades, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites have emerged as promising semiconductors for next-generation photovoltaics, showing notable advancements in solar energy conversion. Herein, we explore the impact of alternative inorganic lattice BX-based compositions (B=Ge or Sn, X=Br or I) on the energy gap and stability. Our investigation encompasses BA2Man-1BnX3n+1 2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (for n=1-5 layers) and 3D bulk (MA)BX3 systems, employing first-principles calculations with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), DFT-1/2 quasiparticle, and D3 dispersion corrections. The study unveils how atoms with smaller ionic radii induce anisotropic internal and external distortions within the inorganic and organic lattices. Introducing the spacers in the low-layer regime reduces local distortions but widens band gaps. Our calculation protocol provides deeper insights into the physics and chemistry underlying 2D perovskite materials, paving the way for optimizing environmentally friendly alternatives that can efficiently replace with sustainable materials.

Abstract
Within the burgeoning field of electronic materials, B-N Lewis acid-base pairs, distinguished by their partial charge distribution across boron and nitrogen centers, represent an underexplored class with significant potential. These materials exhibit inherent dipoles and are excellent candidates for ferroelectricity. However, the challenge lies in achieving the optimal combination of hard-soft acid-base pairs to yield B-N adducts with stable dipoles. Herein, we present an enantiomeric pair of B-N adducts [R/SC6H5CH(CH3)NH2BF3] (R/SMBA-BF3) crystallizing in the polar monoclinic P21 space group. The ferroelectric measurements on RMBA-BF3 gave a rectangular P-E hysteresis loop with a remnant polarization of 7.65 μC cm-2, a value that aligns with the polarization derived from the extensive density-functional theory computations. The PFM studies on the drop-casted film of RMBA-BF3 further corroborate the existence of ferroelectric domains, displaying characteristic amplitude-bias butterfly and phase-bias hysteresis loops. The piezoelectric nature of the RMBA-BF3 was confirmed by its direct piezoelectric coefficient (d33) value of 3.5 pC N-1 for its pellet. The piezoelectric energy harvesting applications on the sandwich devices fabricated from the as-made crystals of RMBA-BF3 gave an open circuit voltage (VPP) of 6.2 V. This work thus underscores the untapped potential of B-N adducts in the field of piezoelectric energy harvesting.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites harness the chemical and structural versatility of organic compounds. Here, we explore 2D perovskites that incorporate both a first organic component, a primary ammonium cation, and a second neutral organic module. Through the experimental examination of 42 organic pairs with a range of functional groups and organic backbones, we identify five crystallization scenarios that occur upon mixing. Only one leads to the cointercalation of the organic modules with distinct and extended interlayer spacing, which is observed with the aid of X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern analysis combined with cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and elemental analysis. We present a picture in which complementary pairs, capable of forming intermolecular bonds, cocrystallize with multiple structural arrangements. These arrangements are a function of the ratio of organic content, annealing temperature, and substrate surface characteristics. We highlight how noncovalent bonds, particularly hydrogen and halogen bonding, enable the influence over the organic sublattice in hybrid halide perovskites.

Abstract
Layered organic-inorganic halide perovskites exhibit remarkable structural and chemical diversity and hold great promise for optoelectronic devices. In these materials, excitons are thought to be strongly confined within the inorganic metal halide layers with interlayer coupling generally suppressed by the organic cations. Here, we present an in-depth study of the energy and spatial distribution of the lowest-energy excitons in layered organic-inorganic halide perovskites from first-principles many-body perturbation theory, within the GW approximation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We find that the quasiparticle band structures, linear absorption spectra, and exciton binding energies depend strongly on the distance and the alignment of adjacent metal halide perovskite layers. Furthermore, we show that exciton delocalization can be modulated by tuning the interlayer distance and alignment, both parameters determined by the chemical composition and size of the organic cations. Our calculations establish the general intuition needed to engineer excitonic properties in novel halide perovskite nanostructures.

Abstract
With the advance of nanotechnology, the past couple of years have witnessed the fast development of quasi two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites, which exhibit outstanding long-term stability against moisture and heat, compared with their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts. As one of the most common structures in 2D halide perovskites, quasi-2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites show multiple-quantum-well structures with n layers of [BX6]4- octahedral inorganic sheets sandwiched by two layers of diammonium spacers, thus exhibiting superior structural stability due to the elimination of van der Waals gaps. Thanks to the achievement of high power conversion efficiency accompanied by impressive stability, quasi-2D DJ perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently drawn extensive attention in the field. This review first introduces the fundamental understanding of quasi-2D DJ halide perovskites, including their superior stability, high exciton binding energy, and compositional flexibility and tunable properties. We then summarize detailed strategies to prepare high-quality quasi-2D DJ perovskites for PSCs, encompassing compositional engineering, solvent engineering, additive addition, and annealing processes. Moreover, the surface/interface modification and 2D-3D hybrid perovskite heterojunction are also discussed, for providing strategies to optimize the fabrication of quasi-2D DJ PSCs. Lastly, current challenges and perspectives toward the future development of quasi-2D DJ perovskites for photovoltaics are outlined.

Abstract
The crucial role of spacer ligands in affecting the contact properties of metal-2D perovskite junctions, which can severely affect device performance, is revealed in this work. We studied the contact properties of Ag, Au, and Pt with 2D perovskites that possess ligands with different sizes and functional groups. It is found that the interface binding energy, Schottky barrier height (SBH), and tunneling property depend strongly on the ligand size and functional group type. Small-size ligands can induce effective interface coupling and result in perturbed perovskite electronic properties and a high tunneling probability. In addition, high work-function metals and more electronegative functional groups can induce more severe band shifts at the interface. The features of diverse ligands ensure a widely tunable SBH ranging from 0-1.07 eV. This study provides guidance for developing more effective 2D perovskite-based electric nanodevices by tuning the contact properties through molecular engineering of spacer ligands.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have emerged in the past few years as a promising material for low-cost, high-efficiency optoelectronic devices. Spurred by this recent interest, several subclasses of halide perovskites such as two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have begun to play a significant role in advancing the fundamental understanding of the structural, chemical, and physical properties of halide perovskites, which are technologically relevant. While the chemistry of these 2D materials is similar to that of the 3D halide perovskites, their layered structure with a hybrid organic-inorganic interface induces new emergent properties that can significantly or sometimes subtly be important. Synergistic properties can be realized in systems that combine different materials exhibiting different dimensionalities by exploiting their intrinsic compatibility. In many cases, the weaknesses of each material can be alleviated in heteroarchitectures. For example, 3D-2D halide perovskites can demonstrate novel behavior that neither material would be capable of separately. This review describes how the structural differences between 3D halide perovskites and 2D halide perovskites give rise to their disparate materials properties, discusses strategies for realizing mixed-dimensional systems of various architectures through solution-processing techniques, and presents a comprehensive outlook for the use of 3D-2D systems in solar cells. Finally, we investigate applications of 3D-2D systems beyond photovoltaics and offer our perspective on mixed-dimensional perovskite systems as semiconductor materials with unrivaled tunability, efficiency, and technologically relevant durability.

Abstract
Ferroelectric ceramics such as PbZrxTi1-xO3 (PZT) are widely applied in many fields, from medical to aerospace, because of their dielectric, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric properties. In the past few years, hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites have gradually attracted attention for their optical and electronic properties, including ferroelectricity, and for their low fabrication costs. In this Review, we first describe techniques that are used to quantify ferroelectric figures of merit of a material. We then discuss ferroelectricity in hybrid perovskites, starting from controversies in methylammonium iodoplumbate perovskites and then focusing on low-dimensional perovskites that offer an unambiguous platform to obtain ferroelectricity. Finally, we provide examples of the application of perovskite ferroelectrics in solar cells, LEDs, and X-ray detectors. We conclude that the vast structure-property tunability makes low-dimensional hybrid perovskites promising, but they have yet to offer ferroelectric figures of merit (e.g., saturated polarization) and thermal stability (e.g., Curie temperature) competitive with those of conventional oxide perovskite ferroelectric materials.

Abstract
Metal halide perovskite materials demonstrate immense potential for photovoltaic and electronic applications. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) layered metal halide perovskites have advantages over their 3D counterparts in optoelectronic applications due to their outstanding stability, structural flexibility with a tunable bandgap, and electronic confinement effect. This review article first analyzes the crystallography of different 2D perovskite phases [the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase, the Dion-Jacobson (DJ) phase, and the alternating cations in the interlayer space (ACI) phase] at the molecular level and compares their common electronic properties, such as out-of-plane conductivity, crucial to vertical devices. This paper then critically reviews the recent development of optoelectronic devices, namely solar cells, photodetectors and field effect transistors, based on layered 2D perovskite materials and points out their limitations and potential compared to their 3D counterparts. It also identifies the important application-specific future research directions for different optoelectronic devices providing a comprehensive view guiding new research directions in this field.

Abstract
Halide hybrid perovskites are attracting considerable attention as highly promising candidates for directly sensing X-ray radiation, but it is challenging to realize passive X-ray detection without an external power supply. However, the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) in ferroelectrics promotes the independent separation of photoexcited carriers. Herein, by dimensionality reconstruction of a pure-two-dimensional (P-2D) monolayered perovskite (CH3 OC3 H9 N)2 PbBr4 , we obtained a quasi-two-dimensional (Q-2D) ferroelectric (CH3 OC3 H9 N)2 CsPb2 Br7 . Converting P-2D into Q-2D perovskite stimulates a significant BPVE associated with robust ferroelectricity, as well as an enhanced mobility lifetime product. These features show the potential of the first passive X-ray detector based on ferroelectrics with an impressive sensitivity up to 410 μC Gy-1 cm-2 at zero bias, which is even superior to the value of the state-of-the-art α-Se detector operated at relatively high bias.

Abstract
2D hybrid perovskites are very attractive for optoelectronic applications because of their numerous exceptional properties. The emerging 2D perovskite ferroelectrics, in which are the coupling of spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric effects, as well as photoexcitation and semiconductor behaviors, have great appeal in the field of piezo-phototronics that enable to effectively improve the performance of optoelectronic devices via modulating the electro-optical processes. However, current studies on 2D perovskite ferroelectrics focus on bulk ceramics that cannot endure irregular mechanical deformation and limit their application in flexible optoelectronics and piezo-phototronics. Herein, we synthesize ferroelectric EA4 Pb3 Br10 single-crystalline thin-films (SCFs) for integration into flexible photodetectors. The in-plane multiaxial ferroelectricity is evident within the EA4 Pb3 Br10 SCFs through systematic characterizations. Flexible photodetectors based on EA4 Pb3 Br10 SCFs are achieved with an impressive photodetection performance. More importantly, optoelectronic EA4 Pb3 Br10 SCFs incorporated with in-plane ferroelectric polarization and effective piezoelectric coefficient show great promise for the observation of piezo-phototronic effect, which is capable of greatly enhancing the photodetector performance. Under external strains, the responsivity of the flexible photodetectors can be modulated by piezo-phototronic effect with a remarkable enhancement up to 284%. Our findings shed light on the piezo-phototronic devices and offer a promising avenue to broaden functionalities of hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics.

Great Amplification of Circular Polarization Sensitivity via Heterostructure Engineering of a Chiral Two-Dimensional Hybrid Perovskite Crystal with a Three-Dimensional MAPbI 3 Crystal. Abstract
Chiral hybrid perovskites have brought an unprecedented opportunity for circularly polarized light (CPL) detection. However, the circular polarization sensitivity of such a detector remains extremely low because of the high exciton recombination rate in those single-phase hybrid perovskites. Here, a heterostructure construction strategy is proposed to reduce the electron-hole recombination rate in a chiral hybrid perovskite and achieve CPL detectors with greatly amplified circular polarization sensitivity. A heterostructure crystal, namely, [(R)-MPA]2MAPb2I7/MAPbI3 ((R)-MPA = (R)-methylphenethylamine, MA = methylammonium), has been successfully created by integrating a chiral two-dimensional (2D) perovskite with its three-dimensional counterpart via solution-processed heteroepitaxy. Strikingly, the sharp interface of the as-grown heterostructure crystal facilitates the formation of a built-in electric field, enabling the combined concepts of charge transfer and chirality transfer, which effectively reduces the recombination probability for photogenerated carriers while retaining chiroptical activity of chiral 2D perovskite. Thereby, the resultant CPL detector exhibits significantly amplified circular polarization sensitivity at zero bias with an impressive anisotropy factor up to 0.67, which is about six times higher than that of the single-phase [(R)-MPA]2MAPb2I7 (0.1). As a proof-of-concept, the strategy we presented here enables a novel path to modulate circular polarization sensitivity and will be helpful to design chiral hybrid perovskites for advanced chiroptical devices.

Abstract
Photodetectors built from conventional bulk materials such as silicon, III-V or II-VI compound semiconductors are one of the most ubiquitous types of technology in use today. The past decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in interest in emerging photodetectors based on perovskite materials driven by the growing demands for uncooled, low-cost, lightweight, and even flexible photodetection technology. Though perovskite has good electrical and optical properties, perovskite-based photodetectors always suffer from nonideal quantum efficiency and high-power consumption. Joint manipulation of electrons and photons in perovskite photodetectors is a promising strategy to improve detection efficiency. In this review, electrical and optical characteristics of typical types of perovskite photodetectors are first summarized. Electrical manipulations of electrons in perovskite photodetectors are discussed. Then, artificial photonic nanostructures for photon manipulations are detailed to improve light absorption efficiency. By reviewing the manipulation of electrons and photons in perovskite photodetectors, this review aims to provide strategies to achieve high-performance photodetectors.

Abstract
High-Curie-temperature (Tc) ferroelectrics have exhibited broad applications in optoelectronic devices. Recently, two-dimensional multilayered perovskite ferroelectrics with excellent photoelectric attributes are attracting increasing interest as new systems of photoferroelectrics. However, the effective tuning of the Tc value of a multilayered perovskite photoferroelectric system still remains a huge challenge. Here, by a halogen substitution strategy to introduce bromine atoms on n-propylamine cations, the hybrid perovskite photoferroelectric (3-bromopropylaminium)2(formamidinium)Pb2Br7 (BFPB) with a high Tc value (348.5 K) was obtained. It is notable that BFPB adopts a two-dimensional bilayered inorganic framework, with tight linking to the organic cation by C-Br···Br-Pb halogen···halogen interactions and N-H···Br hydrogen bonds. Intriguingly, in comparison with the prototypical compound (n-propylaminium)2(formamidinium)Pb2Br7, a remarkable augmentation of 85.2 K in the resulting Tc value of BFPB is clearly observed, which further broadens the temperature range of its application. In combination with the remarkable ferroelectric and semiconducting attributes, the reversible bulk photovoltaic effect was realized in single crystals of BFPB. This finding can not only enhance the hybrid perovskite ferroelectric family but also further promote the photoelectric application of ferroelectrics.

Abstract
By dimensional reduction of the 3D motif of Cs2 AgBiBr6 , a lead-free 2D hybrid double perovskite, (i-PA)2 CsAgBiBr7 (1, i-PA=isopentylammonium), was successfully designed. It adopts a quantum-confined bilayered structure with alternating organic and inorganic sheets. Strikingly, the unique 2D architecture endows it highly anisotropic nature of physical properties, including electric conductivity and optical absorption (the ratio αb /αc =1.9 at 405 nm). Such anisotropy attributes result in the strong polarization-sensitive responses with large dichroic ratios up to 1.35, being comparable to some 2D inorganic materials. This is the first study on the hybrid double perovskites with strong polarization sensitivity. A crystal device of 1 also exhibits rapid response speed (ca. 200 μs) and excellent stabilities. The family of 2D hybrid double perovskites are promising optoelectronic candidates, and this work paves a new pathway for exploring new green polarization-sensitive materials.

Abstract
Since the first perovskite CaTiO3 was discovered in 1839, the development of perovskite has a history of 180 years. The emergence of solar cells (CH3 NH3 )PbI3 has set off the trend of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) materials. Since then, various HOIPs have sprung up and been widely used in various material devices. Among them, HOIP ferroelectrics have gained widespread attention. However, antiperovskite, as a twin brother of perovskite, has been neglected although it has similar structure with perovskite. Here, we successfully found that [C3 H7 FN]3 [SnCl6 ]Cl has a three-dimensional (3D) antiperovskite structure with the formula M3 AB. Importantly, the compound exhibits obvious ferroelectric properties with an Aizu notation of 622F6 at 391 K. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 3D hybrid organic-inorganic antiperovskite ferroelectric, which will greatly promote the development of antiperovskite families with more superior physical properties.

Designing and Constructing a High-Temperature Molecular Ferroelectric by Anion and Cation Replacement in a Simple Crown Ether Clathrate. Chem Asian J 2019; 14:3946-3952. Abstract
Molecular ferroelectrics have displayed a promising future since they are light-weight, flexible, environmentally friendly and easily synthesized, compared to traditional inorganic ferroelectrics. However, how to precisely design a molecular ferroelectric from a non-ferroelectric phase transition molecular system is still a great challenge. Here we designed and constructed a molecular ferroelectric by double regulation of the anion and cation in a simple crown ether clathrate, 4, [K(18-crown-6)]+ [PF6 ]- . By replacing K+ and PF6 - with H3 O+ and [FeCl4 ]- respectively, we obtained a new molecular ferroelectric [H3 O(18-crown-6)]+ [FeCl4 ]- , 1. Compound 1 undergoes a para-ferroelectric phase transition near 350 K with symmetry change from P21/n to the Pmc21 space group. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis suggests that the phase transition was mainly triggered by the displacement motion of H3 O+ and [FeCl4 ]- ions and twist motion of 18-crown-6 molecule. Strikingly, compound 1 shows high a Curie temperature (350 K), ultra-strong second harmonic generation signals (nearly 8 times of KDP), remarkable dielectric switching effect and large spontaneous polarization. We believe that this research will pave the way to design and build high-quality molecular ferroelectrics as well as their application in smart materials.

Abstract
Crowning achievement: Two homochiral crown ether clathrates were synthesized which undergo high-temperature reversible phase transition. In addition, second harmonic generation (SHG) responses and abnormal dielectric property further confirm the reversible phase transitions and symmetry breaking behaviors of the structures.

Abstract
Flexible photodetectors (PDs) have become a research hotspot due to their potential applications in foldable displays, wearable optoelectronic devices, and implantable biomedical sensors. Inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskites, an emerging class of stable metal halide perovskites, have been explored as photoactive materials in PDs due to their superior photoelectrical properties and simple processing. The reported temperature for the fabrication of high-quality CsPbBr3 films is usually higher than 150 °C, which hinders their application in flexible devices. Here, for the first time, high-performance flexible PDs based on CsPbBr3 perovskite films, which showed a broadband spectrum response from blind ultraviolet to visible light, were realized via a modified low-temperature (70 °C) solution-processed method. The perovskite films prepared by this method exhibited improved morphology and high light-harvesting capability. The device also yielded high ON/OFF ratio (103), fast response speed (260 ms, rise time) and high responsivity (0.24 mA W-1) for solar-blind UV light (254 nm) at 2 V. Moreover, the photodetector exhibited outstanding mechanical flexibility and long-term environmental stability for two months without encapsulation. Our work paves the way for the realization of cost-efficient high-performance flexible optoelectronic devices.
