Abstract
The structurally precise alloy nanoclusters have been emerged as a burgeoning nanomaterial for their unique physical/chemical features. We here report a rod-like nanocluster [Au12Cu13(PPh3)10I7](SbF6)2 (Au12Cu13), which was generated through a transformation of a [Au9(PPh3)8]3+ intermediate in the presence of CuI, unveiled by time-dependent UV-vis spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. Au12Cu13 is comprised of two pentagonal bipyramids Au6Cu units and a pentagonal prism Cu11 unit, where the copper and gold species are presented in +1 and 0 chemical states. The Cu-dopants significantly improved the stability and fluorescence (quantum yield: ~34%, 34-folds of homo-Au25(PPh3)10Br7). The high stability of Au12Cu13 is attributed to the high binding energy of iodine ligands, Au-Cu synergistic effects and its 16-electon system as an 8-electron superatom dimer. Finally, the robust Au12Cu13 exhibited high catalytic activity (~92% conversion and ~84% methyl formate-selectivity) and good durability in methanol photo-oxidation.

Abstract
Mercuric (Hg2+) ions released from human activities, natural phenomena, and industrial sources are regarded as the global pollutant of world's water. Hg2+ ions contaminated water has several adverse effects on human health and the environment even at low concentrations. Therefore, rapid and cost-effective method is urgently required for the detection of Hg2+ ions in water. Although, the current analytical methods applied for the detection of Hg2+ ions provide low detection limit, they are time consuming, require expensive equipment, and are not suitable for in-situ analysis. Metal nanoclusters (MNCs) consisting of several to ten metal atoms are important transition missing between single atoms and plasmonic metal nanoparticles. In addition, sub-nanometer sized MNCs possess unique electronic structures and the subsequent unusual optical, physical, and chemical properties. Because of these novel properties, MNCs as a promising material have attracted considerable attention for the construction of selective and sensitive sensors to monitor water quality. Hence this review is focused on recent advances on synthesis strategies, and optical and chemical properties of various MNCs including their applications to develop optical assay for Hg2+ ions in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
A photoluminescent bimetallic cluster [Ag10 Cu6 (bdppthi)2 (C≡CPh)12 (MeOH)2 (H2 O)](ClO4 )4 (1, bdppthi=N,N'-bis(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)-tetrahydroimidazole} was synthesized from the PNNP type ligand bdppthi generated in-situ. Upon excitation at 365 nm, 1 exhibited strong phosphorescent emission at 630 nm, which was selectively quenched by NH3 in air or water. The sensing of NH3 was rapid and recoverable, with detection limits of 53 ppm (v/v) in N2 and 21 μmol/L (0.36 ppm, w/w) for NH3 ⋅ H2 O in water. Cluster 1 could potentially serve as a bifunctional chemical sensor for the efficient detection of ammonia in waste-gas and waste-water.

Abstract
In this research, new bimetal nanoclusters (DAMP-AuAg BNCs) with 4,6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine (DAMP) as a reducing agent and stabilizer ligand were exploited. The nanoclusters displayed excellent fluorescent properties, very small size, good stability, and water solubility. It was found that the as-prepared DAMP-AuAg BNCs exhibited strong fluorescent emission at 640 nm under an excitation wavelength of 473 nm with a large Stokes shift of 167 nm, and the red fluorescence could be readily quenched with aqueous Hg2+. The DAMP-AuAg BNCs showed good specificity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ in aqueous solution, and the fluorescence analysis of Hg2+ showed a wide linear range from 0.85 μM to 246 μM and a detection limit of 20 nM. It is demonstrated that strong Hg2+-Au+ interactions led to the aggregation of nanoclusters, which caused the quenching of the fluorescence, and the affinity of Hg2+ for nitrogen should also be considered. Due to the relevant good performance of DAMP-AuAg BNCs, they were applied to the fluorescence analysis of Hg2+ in real water samples and were found to be a potential fluorescent sensor for aqueous mercury ions.

Abstract
Acetelyenediide (C2 2- ) species have been encapsulated in bimetallic and trimetallic clusters: [(AuL)6 Ag7 (C≡C)3 ](BF4 )7 (2) and [(AuL)6 AgCu6 (C≡C)3 ](BF4 )7 (3), L=phenylbis(2-pyridyl)phosphine (PPhpy2 ). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that they are isostructural and six silver atoms in 2 are replaced with copper in 3. Both clusters have a trefoil skeleton, which can be viewed as three trigonal bipyramidal (LAu-C≡C-AuL)M2 Ag (M=Ag/Cu) motifs sharing a common silver atom. TDDFT calculations showed Cu-doping significantly increases the energy level of (C2 -Cu)-involved occupied orbital, thus inducing interesting transition coupling of dual-emission at low temperature. This work not only provides a strategy for constructing heterometallic clusters, but also shows the prospect for pursuing novel thermochromic luminescent materials by incorporating multi-congeneric metal components.

Abstract
The reaction of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol (DFMF) with 1-amino-2-propanol (AP) and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (THMAM) was investigated in the presence of Cobalt(II) salts, (X = ClO4-, CH3CO2-, Cl-, NO3-), sodium azide (NaN3), and triethylamine (TEA). In one pot, the variation in Cobalt(II) salt results in the self-assembly of dinuclear, tetranuclear, and H-bonding-directed polynuclear coordination complexes of Cobalt(III), Cobalt(II), and mixed-valence CoIICoIII: [Co2III(H2L-1)2(AP-1)(N3)](ClO4)2 (1), [Co4(H2L-1)2(µ3-1,1,1-N3)2(µ-1,1-N3)2Cl2(CH3OH)2]·4CH3OH (2), [Co2IICo2III(HL-2)2(µ-CH3CO2)2(µ3-OH)2](NO3)2·2CH3CH2OH (3), and [Co2IICo2III (H2L12-)2(THMAM-1)2](NO3)4 (4). In 1, two cobalt(III) ions are connected via three single atom bridges; two from deprotonated ethanolic oxygen atoms in the side arms of the ligands and one from the1-amino-2-propanol moiety forming a dinuclear unit with a very short (2.5430(11) Å) Co-Co intermetallic separation with a coordination number of 7, a rare feature for cobalt(III). In 2, two cobalt(II) ions in a dinuclear unit are bridged through phenoxide O and μ3-1,1,1-N3 azido bridges, and the two dinuclear units are interconnected by two μ-1,1-N3 and two μ3-1,1,1-N3 azido bridges generating tetranuclear cationic [Co4(H2L-1)2(µ3-1,1,1-N3)2(µ-1,1-N3)2Cl2(CH3OH)2]2+ units with an incomplete double cubane core, which grow into polynuclear 1D-single chains along the a-axis through H-bonding. In 3, HL2- holds mixed-valent Co(II)/Co(III) ions in a dinuclear unit bridged via phenoxide O, μ-1,3-CH3CO2-, and μ3-OH- bridges, and the dinuclear units are interconnected through two deprotonated ethanolic O in the side arms of the ligands and two μ3-OH- bridges generating cationic tetranuclear [Co2IICo2III(HL-2)2(µ-CH3CO2)2(µ3-OH)2]2+ units with an incomplete double cubane core. In 4, H2L1-2 holds mixed-valent Co(II)/Co(III) ions in dinuclear units which dimerize through two ethanolic O (μ-RO-) in the side arms of the ligands and two ethanolic O (μ3-RO-) of THMAM bridges producing centrosymmetric cationic tetranuclear [Co2IICo2III (H2L1-2)2(THMAM-1)2]4+ units which grow into 2D-sheets along the bc-axis through a network of H-bonding. Bulk magnetization measurements on 2 demonstrate that the magnetic interactions are completely dominated by an overall ferromagnetic coupling occurring between Co(II) ions.

Abstract
The self-assembly of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol (DFMP) and 1-amino-2-propanol (AP)/2-amino-1,3-propanediol (APD) in the presence of copper(II) ions results in the formation of six new supramolecular architectures containing two versatile double Schiff base ligands (H3L and H5L1) with one-, two-, or three-dimensional structures involving diverse nuclearities: tetranuclear [Cu4(HL2−)2(N3)4]·4CH3OH·56H2O (1) and [Cu4(L3−)2(OH)2(H2O)2] (2), dinuclear [Cu2(H3L12−)(N3)(H2O)(NO3)] (3), polynuclear {[Cu2(H3L12−)(H2O)(BF4)(N3)]·H2O}n (4), heptanuclear [Cu7(H3L12−)2(O)2(C6H5CO2)6]·6CH3OH·44H2O (5), and decanuclear [Cu10(H3L12−)4(O)2(OH)2(C6H5CO2)4] (C6H5CO2)2·20H2O (6). X-ray studies have revealed that the basic building block in 1, 3, and 4 is comprised of two copper centers bridged through one μ-phenolate oxygen atom from HL2− or H3L12−, and one μ-1,1-azido (N3−) ion and in 2, 5, and 6 by μ-phenoxide oxygen of L3− or H3L12− and μ-O2− or μ3-O2− ions. H-bonding involving coordinated/uncoordinated hydroxy groups of the ligands generates fascinating supramolecular architectures with 1D-single chains (1 and 6), 2D-sheets (3), and 3D-structures (4). In 5, benzoate ions display four different coordination modes, which, in our opinion, is unprecedented and constitutes a new discovery. In 1, 3, and 5, Cu(II) ions in [Cu2] units are antiferromagnetically coupled, with J ranging from −177 to −278 cm−1.

Abstract
Vapochromic materials, which undergo colour and/or emission changes upon exposure to certain vapours or gases, have received increasing attention recently because of their wide range of applications in, e.g., chemical sensors, light-emitting diodes, and environmental monitors. Vapochromic crystals, as a specific kind of vapochromic materials, can be investigated from the perspective of crystal engineering to understand the mechanism of vapochromism. Moreover, understanding the vapochromism mechanism will be beneficial to design and prepare task-specific vapochromic crystals as one kind of low-cost 'electronic nose' to detect toxic gases or volatile organic compounds. This review provides important information in a broad scientific context to develop new vapochromic materials, which covers organometallic or coordination complexes and organic crystals, as well as the different mechanisms of the related vapochromic behaviour. In addition, recent examples of supramolecular vapochromic crystals and metal-organic-framework (MOFs) vapochromic crystals are introduced.

Abstract
An assembly strategy for metal nanoclusters using electrostatic interactions with weak interactions, such as C-H⋅⋅⋅π and π⋅⋅⋅π interactions in which cationic [Ag26 Au(2-EBT)18 (PPh3 )6 ]+ and anionic [Ag24 Au(2-EBT)18 ]- nanoclusters gather and assemble in an unusual alternating array stacking structure is presented. [Ag26 Au(2-EBT)18 (PPh3 )6 ]+ [Ag24 Au(2-EBT)18 ]- is a new compound type, a double nanocluster ion compound (DNIC). A single nanocluster ion compound (SNIC) [PPh4 ]+ [Ag24 Au(2-EBT)18 ]- was also synthesized, having a k-vector-differential crystallographic arrangement. [PPh4 ]+ [Ag24 Au(2,4-DMBT)18 ]- adopts a different assembly mode from both [Ag26 Au(2-EBT)18 (PPh3 )6 ]+ [Ag24 Au(2-EBT)18 ]- and [PPh4 ]+ [Ag24 Au(2-EBT)18 ]- . Thus, the striking packing differences of [Ag26 Au(2-EBT)18 (PPh3 )6 ]+ [Ag24 Au(2-EBT)18 ]- , [PPh4 ]+ [Ag24 Au(2-EBT)18 ]- and the existing [PPh4 ]+ [Ag24 Au(2,4-DMBT)18 ]- from each other indicate the notable influence of ligands and counterions on the self-assembly of nanoclusters.

Abstract
Assays of ferric ion (Fe3+) with high sensitivity and selectivity have been required to evaluate its amount in environmental and biological systems. Herein, a novel fluorometric penicillamine-capped bimetallic gold-copper nanoclusters (PA-AuCu bi-MNCs) sensor was constructed for facile, environmentally friendly and quantitative detection of Fe3+ through inner filter effect (IFE) mechanism. One-step green synthetic approach was applied for the synthesis of AuCu bi-MNCs by using d-penicillamine (D-PA) as template and stabilizer. In the presence of Fe3+, the emission of the PA-AuCu bi-MNCs was hindered that caused selective quenching of the fluorescence intensity. The response to Fe3+ allows for two linear dynamic ranges of 5.0 × 10-7 M-7.0 × 10-6 M and 7.0 × 10-6 M-1.0 × 10-4 M with a detection limit of 0.1 μM, which is approximately 53 times lower than the maximum level (5.37 μM) of Fe3+ in drinking water that had been reported by the World Health Organization. The independency of the system from most of the interferences is the important feature of this work. Beside the appropriate selectivity of the proposed method, it shows a considerable operation in various environmental samples including rain water, three types of river water and also in human blood serum as a biological matrix.

Abstract
The defined linear arrangement of metal atoms in discrete coordination complexes or polymers is still one of the most intriguing challenges in synthetic chemistry. These chain arrangements are of fundamental importance, because of their potential applications as molecular wires and single molecule magnets (SMM) in microelectronic devices on a molecular scale. Oligonuclear Group 11 metal complexes with suitable bridging ligands, specifically those that are based on copper as the first choice of a cheap precursor coinage metal, are of particular interest in this regard. This is due to the superior luminescence properties of these linear clusters that often show d10 ⋅⋅⋅d10 interactions in their molecular structures. The combination of CuI with heavier coinage metal ions results in tunable emissive arrays that are also stimuli-responsive. Thus, both linear multinuclear CuI and linear heteropolymetallic CuI /AgI as well as CuI /AuI clusters are excellent candidates for applications in molecular/organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Alternatively, paramagnetic multinuclear cupric arrays are prominent as potential molecular wires with enhanced magnetic properties through multiple coupled d9 centers. This Review covers the whole range of linear multinuclear assemblies of cuprous and cupric ions in complexes and coordination polymers, their syntheses, photophysical behavior, and magnetic properties. Moreover, recent advances in the rapidly progressing field of hetero-CuI /AgI and CuI /AuI molecular strings are also discussed.

Abstract
Two novel chloride-centered Ag18 clusters with the same framework but different supporting phosphines are synthesized by the reaction of PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CAg, AgSbF6, PPh3 (or P(p-Tol)3), and NaBH4 in CH2Cl2, followed by the addition of PhC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH and NEt3. The inner twelve Ag atoms of these two clusters are arranged in a rare cuboctahedral structure, which can be rationalized by considering a ligand effect. Through careful analysis, we find that the central chloride arises from a generally ignored but nonetheless existing reaction between CH2Cl2 and NEt3, which is well recognized as the Menshutkin reaction. This research provides insights into the dependence of the cluster structure on the nature of the ligand and into the cluster formation mechanism of the Menshutkin reaction.

Abstract
Homo-metallic metal alkynyl complexes exhibit interesting catenane structures, but their hetero-metallic catenane counterparts are under-developed. In this work, we report rare examples of bimetallic Au-Cu (DtbpC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C- ligand; Dtbp = 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl), Au-Ag ( t BuC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C- ligand), and Au-Cu, Au-Ag (C6-FluoC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C- ligand; C6-Fluo = 9,9-dihexyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl) complexes as well as a trimetallic Au-Ag-Cu (C6-FluoC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C- ligand) complex, which feature [2]catenane structures. The formation of the [2]catenane structure is significantly affected by the coinage metal ion(s) and change of the structure of the alkynyl ligand. These hetero-metallic [2]catenane structures are strongly luminescent with tunable emission λ max from 503 to 595 nm and Φ values up to 0.83.

Laser-induced transformation of supramolecular complexes: approach to controlled formation of hybrid multi-yolk-shell Au-Ag@a-C:H nanostructures. Sci Rep 2015; 5:12027. Abstract
In the present work an efficient approach of the controlled formation of hybrid Au–Ag–C nanostructures based on laser-induced transformation of organometallic supramolecular cluster compound is suggested. Herein the one-step process of the laser-induced synthesis of hybrid multi-yolk-shell Au-Ag@a-C:H nanoparticles which are bimetallic gold-silver subnanoclusters dispersed in nanospheres of amorphous hydrogenated a-C:H carbon is reported in details. It has been demonstrated that variation of the experimental parameters such as type of the organometallic precursor, solvent, deposition geometry and duration of laser irradiation allows directed control of nanoparticles’ dimension and morphology. The mechanism of Au-Ag@a-C:H nanoparticles formation is suggested: the photo-excitation of the precursor molecule through metal-to-ligand charge transfer followed by rupture of metallophilic bonds, transformation of the cluster core including red-ox intramolecular reaction and aggregation of heterometallic species that results in the hybrid metal/carbon nanoparticles with multi-yolk-shell architecture formation. It has been found that the nanoparticles obtained can be efficiently used for the Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy label-free detection of human serum albumin in low concentration solution.

Abstract
The triplet excited state of a new crystalline form of a tetranuclear coordination d(10)-d(10)-type complex, Ag2Cu2L4 (L = 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methylindole ligand), containing Ag(I) and Cu(I) metal centers has been explored using the Laue pump-probe technique with ≈80 ps time resolution. The relatively short lifetime of 1 μs is accompanied by significant photoinduced structural changes, as large as the Ag1···Cu2 distance shortening by 0.59(3) Å. The results show a pronounced strengthening of the argentophilic interactions and formation of new Ag···Cu bonds on excitation. Theoretical calculations indicate that the structural changes are due to a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) strengthening the Ag···Ag interaction, mainly occurring from the methylindole ligands to the silver metal centers. QM/MM optimizations of the ground and excited states of the complex support the experimental results. Comparison with isolated molecule optimizations demonstrates the restricting effect of the crystalline matrix on photoinduced distortions. The work represents the first time-resolved Laue diffraction study of a heteronuclear coordination complex and provides new information on the nature of photoresponse of coinage metal complexes, which have been the subject of extensive studies.
