Shuttling P3 from Niobium to Rhodium: The Synthesis and Use of Ph3SnP3(C6H8) as a P3− Synthon

Synthesis and Reactivity of Hetero-Pnictogen Diazonium Analogs Stabilized by Transition Metal Units

The reactivity of the mixed dipnictogen complexes [{CpMo(CO)2 }2 (μ,η2 : 2 -PE)] (E=P, As, Sb) towards different group 14 electrophiles is reported. The resulting library of cationic compounds [{CpMo(CO)2 }2 (μ,η2 : 2 -EPR)]+ (R=Mes (2,4,6-C6 H2 Me3 ), CH3 , CPh3 , SnMe3 ) represents formally inorganic diazonium homologs which are stabilized by transition metal units. Modifying the steric and electronic properties of the electrophile drastically impacts the respective P-R bond lengths and is accompanied by increasing (SnMe3 >CPh3 >CH3 ) dynamic behavior in solution. In contrast to the well-studied organic analogs, the prepared compounds are stable at room temperature. The subsequent reaction of the model substrate [{CpMo(CO)2 }2 (μ,η2 : 2 -P2 Me)][OTf] ([OTf]- =[CF3 SO3 ]- ) with different N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) leads to an addition at the unsubstituted P atom which is also predicted by computational methods. NMR spectroscopy confirms the formation of two isomers sync/gauche-[{CpMo(CO)2 }(μ,η2 : 1 -P(NHC)PMe){CpMo(CO)2 }][OTf]. X-ray crystallographic characterization and additional DFT calculations shed light on the spatial arrangement as well as on the possible formation pathways of the isomers.

Molecular cyclo-P3 complexes of the rare-earth elements via a one-pot reaction and selective reduction

Synthesis of new organo-lanthanide polyphosphides with an aromatic cyclo-[P₄]^2- moiety and a cyclo-[P₃]^3- moiety is presented. For this purpose, the divalent Ln^II-complexes [(NON)Ln^II(thf)₂] (Ln = Sm, Yb) ((NON)^2- = 4,5-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl-amino)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene) and trivalent Ln^III-complexes [(NON)Ln^IIIBH₄(thf)₂] (Ln = Y, Sm, Dy) were used as precursors in the reduction process of white phosphorus. While using [(NON)Ln^II(thf)₂] as a one-electron reducing agent the formation of organo-lanthanide polyphosphides with a cyclo-[P₄]^2- Zintl anion was observed. For comparison, we investigated a multi-electron reduction of P₄ by a one-pot reaction of [(NON)Ln^IIIBH₄(thf)₂] with elemental potassium. As products molecular polyphosphides with a cyclo-[P₃]^3- moiety were isolated. The same compound could also be obtained by reducing the cyclo-[P₄]^2- Zintl anion within the coordination sphere of Sm^III in [{(NON)Sm^III(thf)₂}₂(μ-η⁴:η⁴-P₄)]. Reduction of a polyphosphide within the coordination sphere of a lanthanide complex is unprecedented. Additionally, the magnetic properties of the dinuclear Dy^III-compound bearing a bridging cyclo-[P₃]^3- moiety were investigated.

Reactivity and Structure of a Bis-phenolate Niobium NHC Complex

We report the facile synthesis of a rare niobium(V) imido NHC complex with a dianionic OCO-pincer benzimidazolylidene ligand (L ¹ ) with the general formula [NbL ¹ (N ^t Bu)PyCl] 1-Py. We achieved this by in situ deprotonation of the corresponding azolium salt [H ₃ L ¹ ][Cl] and subsequent reaction with [Nb(N ^t Bu)Py ₂ Cl ₃ ]. The pyridine ligand in 1-Py can be removed by the addition of B(C₆F₅)₃ as a strong Lewis acid leading to the formation of the pyridine-free complex 1. In contrast to similar vanadium(V) complexes, complex 1-Py was found to be a good precursor for various salt metathesis reactions, yielding a series of chalcogenido and pnictogenido complexes with the general formula [ NbL ¹ (N ^t Bu)Py(EMes)] (E = O (2), S (3), NH (4), and PH (5)). Furthermore, complex 1-Py can be converted to alkyl complex (6) with 1 equiv of neosilyl lithium as a transmetallation agent. Addition of a second equivalent yields a new trianionic supporting ligand on the niobium center (7) in which the benzimidazolylidene ligand is alkylated at the former carbene carbon atom. The latter is an interesting chemically "noninnocent" feature of the benzimidazolylidene ligand potentially useful in catalysis and atom transfer reactions. Addition of mesityl lithium to 1-Py gives the pyridine-free aryl complex 8, which is stable toward "overarylation" by an additional equivalent of mesityl lithium. Electrochemical investigation revealed that complexes 1-Py and 1 are inert toward reduction in dichloromethane but show two irreversible reduction processes in tetrahydrofuran as a solvent. However, using standard reduction agents, e.g., KC₈, K-mirror, and Na/Napht, no reduced products could be isolated. All complexes have been thoroughly studied by various techniques, including ¹H-, ¹³C{¹H}-, and ¹H-¹⁵N HMBC NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis.

Synthesis and Multiple Subsequent Reactivity of Anionic cyclo-E3 Ligand Complexes (E=P, As)

A synthetic pathway for the synthesis of novel anionic sandwich complexes with a cyclo-E3 (E=P, As) ligand as an end deck was developed giving [Cp'''Co(η3 -E3 )]- (Cp'''=1,2,4-tri-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl, E=P ([5]), As ([6])) in good yields suitable for further reactivity studies. In the reaction with the chlorophosphanes R2 PCl (R=Ph, Cy, t Bu), neutral complexes with a disubstituted cyclo-E3 P (E=P, As) ligand in [Cp'''Co(η3 -E3 PR2 )] (E=P (7 a-c), As (9 a-c)) were obtained. These compounds can be partially or completely converted into complexes with a cyclo-E3 (E=P, As) ligand with an exocyclic {PR2 } unit in [Cp'''Co(η2 :η1 -E3 PR2 )] (E=P (8 a-c), As (10 a-c)). Additionally, the insertion of the chlorosilylene [LSiCl] (L=(t BuN)2 CPh) into the cyclo-E3 ligand of [5] and [6] was achieved and the novel heteroatomic complexes [Cp'''Co(η3 -E3 SiL)] (E=P (11), As (12)) could be isolated. The reaction pathway was elucidated by DFT calculations.

Transition-Metal-Mediated Functionalization of White Phosphorus

Recently there has been great interest in the reactivity of transition-metal (TM) centers towards white phosphorus (P4 ). This has ultimately been motivated by a desire to find TM-mediated alternatives to the current industrial routes used to transform P4 into myriad useful P-containing products, which are typically indirect, wasteful, and highly hazardous. Such a TM-mediated process can be divided into two steps: activation of P4 to generate a polyphosphorus complex TM-Pn , and subsequent functionalization of this complex to release the desired phosphorus-containing product. The former step has by now become well established, allowing the isolation of many different TM-Pn products. In contrast, productive functionalization of these complexes has proven extremely challenging and has been achieved only in a relative handful of cases. In this review we provide a comprehensive summary of successful TM-Pn functionalization reactions, where TM-Pn must be accessible by reaction of a TM precursor with P4 . We hope that this will provide a useful resource for continuing efforts that are working towards this highly challenging goal of modern synthetic chemistry.

Functionalization of Pentaphosphorus Cations by Complexation

The chemistry of polyphosphorus cations has rapidly developed in recent years, but their coordination behavior has remained mostly unexplored. Herein, we describe the reactivity of [P5 R2 ]+ cations with cyclopentadienyl metal complexes. The reaction of [CpAr Fe(μ-Br)]2 (CpAr =C5 (C6 H4 -4-Et)5 ) with [P5 R2 ][GaCl4 ] (R=iPr and 2,4,6-Me3 C6 H2 (Mes)) afforded bicyclo[1.1.0]pentaphosphanes (1-R, R=iPr and Mes), showing an unsymmetric "butterfly" structure. The same products 1-R were formed from K[CpAr ] and [P5 R2 ][GaCl4 ]. The cationic complexes [CpAr Co(η4 -P5 R2 )][GaCl4 ] (2-R[GaCl4 ], R=iPr and Cy) and [(CpAr Ni)2 (η3:3 -P5 R2 )][GaCl4 ] (3-R[GaCl4 ]) were obtained from [P5 R2 ][GaCl4 ] and [CpAr M(μ-Br)]2 (M=Co and Ni) as well as by using low-valent "CpAr MI " sources. Anion metathesis of 2-R[GaCl4 ] and 3-R[GaCl4 ] was achieved with Na[BArF24 ]. The P5 framework of the resulting salts 2-R[BArF24 ] can be further functionalized with nucleophiles. Thus reactions with [Et4 N]X (X=CN and Cl) give unprecedented cyano- and chloro-functionalized complexes, while organo-functionalization was achieved with CyMgCl.

Ring Expansions of Nonpolar Polyphosphorus Rings

The reaction of the phosphinidene complex [Cp*P{W(CO)₅ }₂ ] (1 a) (Cp*=C₅ Me₅ ) with the anionic cyclo-P_n ligand complex [(η³ -P₃ )Nb(ODipp)₃ ]^- (2, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) resulted in the formation of [{W(CO)₅ }₂ {μ₃ ,η^3:1:1 -P₄ Cp*}Nb(ODipp)₃ ]^- (3), which represents an unprecedented example of a ring expansion of a polyphosphorus-ligand complex initiated by a phosphinidene complex. Furthermore, the reaction of the pnictinidene complexes [Cp*E{W(CO)₅ }₂ ] (E=P: 1 a, As: 1 b) with the neutral complex [Cp'''Co(η⁴ -P₄ )] (Cp'''=1,2,4-tBu₃ C₅ H₂ ) led to a cyclo-P₄ E ring (E=P, As) through the insertion of the pentel atom into the cyclo-P₄ ligand. Starting from 1 a, the two isomers [Cp'''Co(μ₃ ,η^4:1:1 -P₅ Cp*){W(CO)₅ }₂ ] (5 a,b), and from 1 b, the three isomers [Cp'''Co(μ₃ ,η^4:1:1 -AsP₄ Cp*){W(CO)₅ }₂ ] (6 a-c) with unprecedented cyclo-P₄ E ligands (E=P, As) were isolated. The complexes 6 a-c represent unique examples of ring expansions which lead to new mixed five-membered cyclo-P₄ As ligands. The possible reaction pathways for the formation of 5 a,b and 6 a-c were investigated by a combination of temperature-dependent ³¹ P{¹ H} NMR studies and DFT calculations.

Ruthenium mediated halogenation of white phosphorus: synthesis and reactivity of the unprecedented P4Cl2 moiety

The transition metal mediated functionalization of P4 is an approach to develop a more sustainable production of organophosphorus compounds. In this paper a ruthenium complex is presented, in which the P4 unit can be selectively converted into new P4R2 molecules in a two-step synthesis. The unsaturated 16 electron species [RuX(Cp*)(PCy3)] (Cp* = C5Me5, X = Cl, Br) reacts with a half equivalent of P4 affording a bimetallic complex bearing a planar P4X2 moiety as a ligand. The latter eliminates chloride anions under reduction with magnesium. In this process the butadiene-like P4Cl2 ligand is converted into two weakly bound P2 units which bridge the ruthenium centers. In the presence of n-BuLi, the P4Cl2 unit can be selectively alkylated, yielding the planar organophosphorus ligand P4nBu2. A detailed analysis of the electronic properties and solid state structures of the compounds combined with DFT calculations and AIM analyses demonstrate that the P4 unit in all complexes acts as an electronically highly flexible, non-innocent ligand.

Construction of alkyl-substituted pentaphosphido ligands in the coordination sphere of cobalt

Rare mono- and diorganopentaphosphido cobalt complexes are accessible by P-P condensation using the unprecedented, reactive cobalt-gallium tetraphosphido complex [K(dme)₂{(^MesBIAN)Co(μ-η⁴:η²-P₄)Ga(nacnac)}] (2). Compound 2 was prepared in good yield by reaction of [K(Et₂O){(^MesBIAN)Co(η⁴-1,5-cod)}] [1, BIAN = bis(mesitylimino)acenaphthene diimine, cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene] with [Ga(nacnac)(η²-P₄)] (nacnac = CH[CMeN(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)]₂). Reactions with R₂PCl (R = iPr, tBu, and Cy) selectively afford [(^MesBIAN)Co(cyclo-P₅R₂)] (3a-c), which feature η⁴-coordinated 1,1-diorganopentaphosphido ligands. The mechanism of formation of these species has been studied by ³¹P{¹H} NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. In the case of 3a (R = iPr), it was possible to identify the intermediate [(^MesBIAN)Co(μ-η⁴:η²-P₅iPr₂)Ga(nacnac)] (4) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A related, monosubstituted organopentaphosphido cobalt complex [(^MesBIAN)Co(μ-η⁴:η¹-P₅ tBu)GaCl(nacnac)] (5) was isolated by reacting dichloroalkylphosphane tBuPCl₂ with 2. Heterobimetallic complexes such as 2 thus may enable the targeted construction of a range of new metal-coordinated polyphosphorus frameworks by P-P condensation.

Molecular Niobium Precursors in Various Oxidation States: An XAS Case Study

Although X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has become an indispensable tool in characterization of solid-state materials, it is less of a staple in molecular chemistry of niobium. Scattering X-ray techniques remain relatively unexplored for the systematic study of molecular niobium compounds. Here, we use XAS to probe the niobium environment in commonly used Nb precursors in +V, +IV, and +III oxidation states. Apart from laying out the guidelines for identification of niobium oxidation states, we correlate our data with density functional theory models to provide further structural insight. Of particular note, we are able to shed light on the nature of the commonly used and catalytically competent NbCl₃(DME), which had not been previously characterized structurally despite its prevalence in Nb chemistry.

A Planar Ti2 P2 Core Assembled by Reductive Decarbonylation of - O-C≡P and P-P Radical Coupling

The complex [(nacnac)Ti(OAr)]₂ (μ₂ :η² ,η² -P₂ ) (1) is formed via reductive decarbonylation of the phosphaethynolate ion ^- [OCP], which serves as a P atom source. Complex 1 is the first structurally characterized Group 4 transition metal P₂ complex and its structure reveals the rhombic Ti₂ P₂ core is essentially planar with short bond lengths suggesting some degree of multiple bonding character between the Ti-P and P-P sites. Computational studies of 1 provide an understanding of the Ti₂ P₂ core as well as the origin of the highly downfield ³¹ P NMR spectroscopic signal.

Selective [3+1] Fragmentations of P4 by "P" Transfer from a Lewis Acid Stabilized [RP4 ]- Butterfly Anion

Two [3+1] fragmentations of the Lewis acid stabilized bicyclo[1.1.0]tetraphosphabutanide Li[Mes*P₄ ⋅ BPh₃ ] (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu₃ C₆ H₂ ) are reported. The reactions proceed by extrusion of a P₁ fragment, induced by either an imidazolium salt or phenylisocyanate, with release of the transient triphosphirene Mes*P₃ , which was isolated as a dimer and trapped by 1,3-cyclohexadiene as a Diels-Alder adduct. DFT quantum chemical computations were used to delineate the reaction mechanisms. These unprecedented pathways grant access to both P₁ - and P₃ -containing organophosphorus compounds in two simple steps from white phosphorus.

Assembly and stabilization of {E(cyclo-P3)2} (E = Sn, Pb) as a bridging ligand spanning two triaryloxyniobium units

Complexes (THF)0-2E[P3Nb(ODipp)3]2 (E = Sn, Pb; Dipp = 2,6-(i)Pr2C6H3) were isolated (>90%) from the salt metathesis of [Na(THF)3][P3Nb(ODipp)3] with E(2+) salts. The reaction of (THF)Sn[P3Nb(ODipp)3]2 with pyridine-N-oxide was investigated as a method to deposit a new SnP6 phase. Additionally, the neutral complex P3Nb(ODipp)2(py)2 (py = pyridine) was prepared from [Na(THF)3][P3Nb(ODipp)3] in the presence of pyridine and salts of coordinating cations (Mg(II), Sn(II), Pb(II), Ge(II), Hg(II) and Ag(I)). P3Nb(ODipp)2(py)2 was found to successfully produce AsP3 upon treatment with AsCl3. The characterization of complexes (THF)0-1Sn[P3Nb(ODipp)3]2, (THF)2Pb[P3Nb(ODipp)3]2 and P3Nb(ODipp)2(py)2, including their solid state structures, is discussed.

Activation of white phosphorus by low-valent group 5 complexes: formation and reactivity of cyclo-P4 inverted sandwich compounds

We report the synthesis and comprehensive study of the electronic structure of a unique series of dinuclear group 5 cyclo-tetraphosphide inverted sandwich complexes. White phosphorus (P4) reacts with niobium(III) and tantalum(III) β-diketiminate (BDI) tert-butylimido complexes to produce the bridging cyclo-P4 phosphide species {[(BDI)(N(t)Bu)M]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)} (1, M = Nb; 2, M = Ta) in fair yields. 1 is alternatively synthesized upon hydrogenolysis of (BDI)Nb(N(t)Bu)Me2 in the presence of P4. The trinuclear side product {[(BDI)NbN(t)Bu]3(μ-P12)} (3) is also identified. Protonation of 1 with [HOEt2][B(C6F5)4] does not occur at the phosphide ring but rather involves the BDI ligand to yield {[(BDI(#))Nb(N(t)Bu)]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)}[B(C6F5)4]2 (4). The monocation and dication analogues {[(BDI)(N(t)Bu)Nb]2(μ-η(3):η(3)P4)}{B(Ar(F))4}n (5, n = 1; 6, n = 2) are both synthesized by oxidation of 1 with AgBAr(F). DFT calculations were used in combination with EPR and UV-visible spectroscopies to probe the nature of the metal-phosphorus bonding.
