Recent advances in discovery and biosynthesis of natural products from myxobacteria: an overview from 2017 to 2023

Covering: 2017.01 to 2023.11Natural products biosynthesized by myxobacteria are appealing due to their sophisticated chemical skeletons, remarkable biological activities, and intriguing biosynthetic enzymology. This review aims to systematically summarize the advances in the discovery methods, new structures, and bioactivities of myxobacterial NPs reported in the period of 2017-2023. In addition, the peculiar biosynthetic pathways of several structural families are also highlighted.

Nickel-Catalyzed Intramolecular Hydrosilylation of Alkynes: Embracing Conventional and Electrochemical Routes

Nickel-catalyzed intramolecular hydrosilylation can be efficiently achieved with high regio- and stereoselectivities through two distinct methodologies. The first approach utilizes a conventional method, involving the reduction of nickel salt (NiBr2-2,2'-bipyridine) using manganese metal. The second method employs a one-step electrochemical reaction, utilizing the sacrificial anode process and NiBr2bipy catalysis. Both methods yield silylated heterocycles in good to high yields through a syn-exo-dig cyclization process. Control experiments and molecular electrochemistry (cyclic voltammetry) provided further insights into the reaction mechanism.

Handheld UV spectrophotometer device for detection of methamphetamine hydrochloride based on supramolecular sensing platform

The realization of drug detection in drug-using crime sites can provide law enforcement officials with direct evidence. This research has developed and demonstrated an easy-to-use handheld sensor that can quickly detect methamphetamine (MA) in the field. The core of the handheld UV spectrophotometer device (HUVSD) is the STM32F103 series of single-chip micro-controller, which has a 32-bit microcontroller and two embedded 12-bit high-precision analog-to-digital converter (ADC) modules. Through Bluetooth-wireless transmission protocol, the spectral information can be displayed in the cell phone's app, and it is possible to visually determine whether the test sample contains methamphetamine hydrochloride substances based on the characteristic peak at 410 nm. The readily available and inexpensive inducible compound 3A and the phosphate pillar[5]arene@silver nanoparticle (PP5@AgNPs) colloidal solution were used as the reactants. The PP5@AgNPs colloidal solution and 3A were mixed and reacted at room temperature, and the color changed to gray-black. The color change was caused by the aggregation of AgNPs induced by the molecular recognition between the induction compound 3A and PP5 on the AgNPs surface. After continuing to add the drug MA, the color of the colloidal solution turned yellow again. This is due to the occurrence of competitive molecular recognition, and the interaction between PP5 and 3A/MA was investigated by molecular docking simulations. The HUVSD has high sensitivity, simple equipment, time-saving, color change visualization and suitable for on-site deployment. It only needs a Pasteur pipette, which has great potential to realize rapid on-site detection.

Enrichment Strategies for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction in Acidic Electrolytes

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) has been recognized as an appealing route to remarkably accelerate the carbon-neutral cycle and reduce carbon emissions. Notwithstanding great catalytic activity that has been acquired in neutral and alkaline conditions, the carbonates generated from the inevitable reaction of the input CO2 with the hydroxide severely lower carbon utilization and energy efficiency. By contrast, CO2 RR in an acidic condition can effectively circumvent the carbonate issues; however, the activity and selectivity of CO2 RR in acidic electrolytes will be decreased significantly due to the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Enriching the CO2 and the key intermediates around the catalyst surface can promote the reaction rate and enhance the product selectivity, providing a promising way to boost the performance of CO2 RR. In this review, the catalytic mechanism and key technique challenges of CO2 RR are first introduced. Then, the critical progress of enrichment strategies for promoting the CO2 RR in the acidic electrolyte is summarized with three aspects: catalyst design, electrolyte regulation, and electrolyzer optimization. Finally, some insights and perspectives for further development of enrichment strategies in acidic CO2 RR are expounded.

Perfect cubic metallo-borospherenes TM8B6 (TM = Ni, Pd, Pt) as superatoms following the 18-electron rule

Transition-metal (TM)-doped metallo-borospherenes exhibit unique structures and bonding in chemistry which have received considerable attention in recent years. Based on extensive global minimum searches and first-principles theory calculations, we predict herein the first and smallest perfect cubic metallo-borospherenes Oh TM8B6 (TM = Ni (1), Pd (2), Pt (3)) and Oh Ni8B6- (1-) which contain eight equivalent TM atoms at the vertexes of a cube and six quasi-planar tetra-coordinate face-capping boron atoms on the surface. Detailed canonical molecular orbital and adaptive natural density partitioning bonding analyses indicate that Oh TM8B6 (1/2/3) as superatoms possess nine completely delocalized 14c-2e bonds following the 18-electron principle (1S21P61D10), rendering spherical aromaticity and extra stability to the complex systems. Furthermore, Ni8B6 (1) can be used as building blocks to form the three-dimensional metallic binary crystal NiB (4) (Pm3̄m) in a bottom-up approach which possesses a typical CsCl-type structure with an octa-coordinate B atom located exactly at the center of the cubic unit cell. The IR, Raman, UV-vis and photoelectron spectra of the concerned clusters are computationally simulated to facilitate their experimental characterization.

Broadening the catalytic region from the cavity to windows by M6L12 nanospheres in cyclizations

Supramolecular cages have received tremendous attention as they can contain catalysts that exhibit confinement effects in the cavity, leading to excellent performances. Herein, we report an example wherein the catalytic region is extended from the cage cavity to the windows, and investigate its confinement effect by utilizing the Pd6LAu12 cage that contains rigidly fixed and isolated gold complexes at the windows. Pd6LAu12 exhibit three features of particular interest while assessing their properties in gold-catalyzed cyclization reactions. First, the catalysts experience a cage effect as they display higher reactivity and selectivity compared to the monomeric analogue, as a result of substrate pre-organization at the windows. Second, the metal complexes are physically separated by the cage structure, preventing the formation of less active dinuclear gold complexes making it more stable under hydrous conditions. Third, the cage windows present the characteristics of enzymatic catalysis via Michaelis-Menten-type mechanism analysis. This contribution presents an alternative way to engineer supramolecular catalysts through extending the catalytic region.

Design and synthesis of photostable triphenylamine based neutral AIE nano luminogens: specific and long-term tracking of mitochondria in cells

With the increasing dependence on fluorescence bioimaging, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have gained significant attention due to their excellent photostabilization, minimal photobleaching, high reliability, and superior biocompatibility. Since mitochondria are crucial subcellular organelles in eukaryotic cells with important biological functions, organelle-specific AIE emitters with distinct functions have been highly sought after, but with limited success using simple synthetic methods. Here, we describe a strategy for synthesizing two triphenylamine (TPA) based acrylonitriles, tethered to different donor groups, TPA and phenothiazine (PTZ), respectively, with superior AIE properties using Suzuki coupling. We conducted a systematic and detailed experimental analysis of the structural characteristics of both AIE luminogens, which exhibited excellent photostability, a large Stokes shift, and bright solid-state emission. A cell viability study carried out with F1 and F2 dyes revealed that both luminogens exhibited excellent biocompatibility. Based on fluorescence experiments, F2 displayed excellent AIE characteristics, permeability, biocompatibility, and photostability compared to rhodamine 123, allowing it to selectively stain and track mitochondria in cancer cells over an extended period of time. The Pearson correlation coefficient of F2 and rhodamine 123 was estimated to have an r-value of 0.99. Our findings are expected to provide insight into the synthesis of an extensive archive of AIE-based acrylonitriles with fascinating properties for mitochondrial staining.

Recent advances in the construction of tetracoordinate boron compounds

Tetracoordinate boron compounds are a highly important class of molecules, which are the key intermediates in many organoboron-related chemical transformations and have unique luminescence properties. However, the synthesis of tetracoordinate boron compounds has never been reviewed. In this highlight, we summarize recent progress on the construction of racemic and chiral tetracoordinate borons, and hope to provide ideas for the assembly of them in more efficient ways, especially for the construction of boron-stereogenic compounds.

Thiourea fused γ-amino alcohol organocatalysts for asymmetric Mannich reaction of β-keto active methylene compounds with imines

Catalytic functionality of new optically active thiourea fused γ-amino alcohols was examined in the asymmetric Mannich reaction of β-keto active methylene compounds with imines to afford chiral Mannich products, β-amino keto compounds, with continuous chiral centers, that are versatile synthetic intermediates for deriving various biologically active compounds. In particular, the thiourea fused γ-amino alcohols showed satisfactory catalytic activity in this reaction and afforded chiral Mannich products in excellent chemical yield (up to 88%) and stereoselectivities (up to syn : anti/93 : 7 dr, up to 99% ee).

Synthetic approaches for perovskite thin films and single-crystals

Halide perovskites are compelling candidates for the next generation of photovoltaic technologies owing to an unprecedented increase in power conversion efficiency and their low cost, facile fabrication and outstanding semiconductor properties.

Construction of bi(hetero)aryls via dicyanopyrazine-mediated photochemical cross-coupling

A photochemical cross-coupling protocol towards bi(hetero)aryls has been developed. The coupling reactions were mediated by dicyanopyrazine photoredox catalyst, while a photoinduced disproportionation process has been identified as an accompanying mechanism, especially for pyrrole derivatives. The developed method allows the cross-coupling of five-membered rings such as pyrrole, imidazole, thiazole and oxazole as well as various diazines (pyridine and pyrimidine) and benzene derivatives. A plausible mechanism of the reaction has also been disclosed. The practical application and relevance of the developed method were demonstrated by constructing an atorvastatin core or by the gradual functionalization of benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole. In total, twenty-one bi(hetero)aryls were prepared in yields ranging from 19 to 95%.

Visible light-induced photoredox catalyzed C-N coupling of amides with alcohols

A visible-light-mediated method for the construction of N-monoalkylated products from easily available benzamides and benzyl alcohol in the presence of eosin Y has been developed. The reaction proceeded smoothly, for a wide range of derivatives of benzamides and benzyl alcohols, to give the desired products in good to excellent yields. Biological studies, such as those on drug-likeness and molecular docking, are carried out on the molecules.

Titanium dioxide-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries: structure and synthesis

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have high energy density, long life, good safety, and environmental friendliness, and have been widely used in large-scale energy storage and mobile electronic devices. As a cheap and non-toxic anode material for LIBs, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has a good application prospect. However, its poor electrical conductivity leads to unsatisfactory electrochemical performance, which limits its large-scale application. In this review, the structure of three TiO₂ polymorphs which are widely investigated are briefly described, then the preparation and electrochemical performance of TiO₂ with different morphologies, such as nanoparticles, nanowires, nanotubes, and nanospheres, and the related research on the TiO₂ composite materials with carbon, silicon, and metal materials are discussed. Finally, the development trend of TiO₂-based anode materials for LIBs has been briefly prospected.

Potential Applications of Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks and their Derivatives

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a novel class of porous extended crystalline structures, are favored in different fields of heterogeneous catalysis, CO₂ separation and conversion, and energy storage (supercapacitors) due to their convenience of synthesis, structural tailor-ability, tunable pore size, high porosity, large specific surface area, devisable structures, and adjustable compositions. Nickel (Ni) is a ubiquitous element extensively applied in various fields of catalysis and energy storage due to its low cost, high abundance, thermal and chemical stability, and environmentally benign nature. Ni-based MOFs and their derivatives provide us with the opportunity to modify different properties of the Ni center to improve their potential as heterogeneous catalysts or energy storage materials. The recent achievements of Ni-MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts, membrane materials for CO₂ separation and conversion, electrode materials and their respective performance have been discussed in this review.

Electrochemiluminescent sensor based on an aggregation-induced emission probe for bioanalytical detection

In recent years, with the rapid development of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensors, more luminophores have been designed to achieve high-throughput and reliable analysis. Impressively, after the proposed fantastic concept of "aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL)" by Cola, the application of AIECL emitters provides more abundant choices for the further improvement of ECL sensors. In this review, we briefly report the phenomenon, principle and representative applications of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and AIECL emitters. Moreover, it is noteworthy that the cases of AIECL sensors for bioanalytical detection are summarized in detail, from 2017 to now. Finally, inspired by the applications of AIECL emitters, relevant prospects and challenges for AIECL sensors are proposed, which is of great significance for exploring more advanced bioanalytical detection technology.

Tannic acid: a crosslinker leading to versatile functional polymeric networks: a review

With the thriving of mussel-inspired polyphenol chemistry as well as the demand for low-cost analogues to polydopamine in adhesive design, tannic acid has gradually become a research focus because of its wide availability, health benefits and special chemical properties. As a natural building block, tannic acid could be used as a crosslinker either supramolecularly or chemically, ensuring versatile functional polymeric networks for various applications. Up to now, a systematic summary on tannic-acid-based networks has still been waiting for an update and outlook. In this review, the common features of tannic acid are summarized in detail, followed by the introduction of covalent and non-covalent crosslinking methods leading to various tannic-acid-based materials. Moreover, recent progress in the application of tannic acid composites is also summarized, including bone regeneration, skin adhesives, wound dressings, drug loading and photothermal conversion. Above all, we also provide further prospects concerning tannic-acid-crosslinked materials.

Responsive fluorescence enhancement for in vivo Cu(II) monitoring in zebrafish larvae

Several neurodegenerative diseases are ascribed to disorders caused by the secretion of Cu ions. However, a majority of the current techniques for copper ion detection are restricted to in vivo monitoring and nonspecific interactions. Their methods are limited to the systematic analysis of Cu ions in living organisms. Thus, a synthetic molecular fluorophore, 5-amino 2,3-dihydroquinolinimine (NDQI), has been developed and successfully utilized in in vivo monitoring of the distribution of Cu(II) in zebrafish larvae. The reversible formation of the NDQI-Cu complex allows its use with high metal concentrations and in oxidative stress conditions. The NDQI-directed strategy developed here can quantitatively differentiate cells with different Cu(II) concentrations. Remarkably, dynamic distribution of Cu(II) in the intestine and liver can be observed.

Amplifiable ratiometric fluorescence biosensing of nanosilver multiclusters populated in three-way-junction DNA branches

To explore the fluorescence bio-responsiveness of emissive silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) populated in DNA-branched scaffolds is intriguing yet challenging. In response to a desired targeting model (T*) as a vehicle, herein a customized three-way-junction DNA construct (TWJDC) is assembled via competitive hybridizing cascade among three stem-loop hairpins with specific base sequences, where the repeated recycling of T* enables the exponentially amplifiable output of rigid TWJDC. As designed, these stable hybridization products are highly T*-stimulated responsive and constructing-directional. In the three branched-arms, the unpaired sticky ends provide isotropic binding sites for a signaling hairpin encoded with two C-rich templates of green- and red-AgNCs clustering. The identical ligation of signal probe with three arms of TWJDC liberates its locked stem, enabling the separate growth of red-clusters in three branches. As demonstrated, three clusters of red-AgNCs possess advantageous self-enhancing fluorescent performance relative to single or two cluster(s), good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. Utilizing the bicolor AgNCs as dual-emitters with reversely changed emission intensity, we developed an innovative ratiometric strategy displaying sensitively linear dose-dependence on variable T* down to 1.9 pM, which can afford a promising platform for biosensing, bioanalysis, cell imaging, or even clinical theranostics.

Recent advances in decarbonylative annulation reactions

In recent years, decarbonylative annulation reactions have emerged as one of the most efficient routes to construct a variety of important carbocyclic and heterocyclic scaffolds. The main advantages of this type of reaction are, first, the carbonyl compounds are used as the starting materials which are abundant in nature and second, the major by-product of this reaction is carbon monoxide. In the last two decades, various intramolecular and intermolecular decarbonylative annulation reactions have been performed using carbonyl compounds and alkenes/alkynes/arenes/isocyanates etc. as the annulation partners. These reactions are typically performed either in the presence of or in the absence of a metal catalyst. However, these reactions are still in their infancy as a very little progress has been achieved in these reactions. Through this review article, it is attempted to highlight the recent developments on various decarbonylative annulation reactions which ultimately lead to the formation of important structural moieties.

Dual-readout performance of Eu3+-doped nanoceria as a phosphatase mimic for degradation and detection of organophosphate

Eu³⁺-Doped nanoceria (Eu:CeO₂) with self-integrated catalytic and luminescence sensing functions was synthesized by a simple and gentle one-pot method to build a dual-readout nanozyme platform for organophosphate compound (OPC) sensing in this work. The catalytic degradation of the model substrate of OPC, p-nitrophenyl phosphate (p-NPP), by as-prepared Eu:CeO₂ can be completed in 2 min with little influence of temperature and pH values, highlighting the advantages of Eu:CeO₂ as an artificial enzyme for dephosphorylation. Most importantly, the characteristic red emission of Eu³⁺ (592 nm) from Eu:CeO₂ can be quenched by p-NPP, accompanied by a color change from colorless to yellow. Based on this, linear ranges of 4-50 μM with a detection limit of 3.3 μM and 1-20 μM with a detection limit of 0.6 μM for p-NPP were obtained by colorimetric and fluorescence methods, respectively. Furthermore, the fluorescence strategy was effectively applied to the determination of ethyl para-nitrophenyl (EPN), one of the most commonly used pesticides, with a detection limit of 5.86 μM. The proposed strategy was also successfully applied to the assay of p-NPP and EPN in real water samples, showing great application prospects in detecting OPC in the environment.

Perovskite indoor photovoltaics: opportunity and challenges

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoTs), photovoltaics (PVs) has a vast market supply gap of billion dollars. Moreover, it also puts forward new requirements for the development of indoor photovoltaic devices (IPVs). In recent years, PVs represented by organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), silicon solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), etc. considered for use in IoTs mechanisms have also been extensively investigated. However, there are few reports on the indoor applications of perovskite devices, even though it has the advantages of better performance. In fact, perovskite has the advantages of better bandgap adjustability, lower cost, and easier preparation of large-area on flexible substrates, compared with other types of IPVs. This review starts from the development status of IoTs and investigates the cost, technology, and future trends of IPVs. We believe that perovskite photovoltaics is more suitable for indoor applications and review some strategies for fabricating high-performance perovskite indoor photovoltaic devices (IPVs). Finally, we also put forward a perspective for the long-term development of perovskite IPVs.

Infrared Plasmonic Biosensor with Tetrahedral DNA Nanostructure as Carriers for Label-Free and Ultrasensitive Detection of miR-155

MicroRNAs play an important role in early development, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cell death, and are aberrantly expressed in many types of cancers. To understand their function and diagnose cancer at an early stage, it is crucial to quantitatively detect microRNA without invasive labels. Here, a plasmonic biosensor based on surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) for rapid, label-free, and ultrasensitive detection of miR-155 is reported. This technology leverages metamaterial perfect absorbers stimulating the SEIRA effect to provide up to 1000-fold near-field intensity enhancement over the microRNA fingerprint spectral bands. Additionally, it is discovered that the limit of detection (LOD) of the biosensor can be greatly improved by using tetrahedral DNA nanostructure (TDN) as carriers. By using near-field enhancement of SEIRA and specific binding of TDN, the biosensor achieves label-free detection of miR-155 with a high sensitivity of 1.162% pm^-1 and an excellent LOD of 100 × 10^-15 m. The LOD is about 5000 times lower than that using DNA single strand as probes and about 100 times lower than that of the fluorescence detection method. This work can not only provide a powerful diagnosis tool for the microRNAs detection but also gain new insights into the field of label-free and ultrasensitive SEIRA-based biosensing.

Electrochemical Installation of CFH2 -, CF2 H-, CF3 -, and Perfluoroalkyl Groups into Small Organic Molecules

Electrosynthesis can be considered a powerful and sustainable methodology for the synthesis of small organic molecules. Due to its intrinsic ability to generate highly reactive species under mild conditions by anodic oxidation or cathodic reduction, electrosynthesis is particularly interesting for otherwise challenging transformations. One such challenge is the installation of fluorinated alkyl groups, which has gained significant attention in medicinal chemistry and material science due to their unique physicochemical features. Unsurprisingly, several electrochemical fluoroalkylation methods have been established. In this review, we survey recent developments and established methods in the field of electrochemical mono-, di-, and trifluoromethylation, and perfluoroalkylation of small organic molecules.

How to identify a smoker: a salient crystallographic approach to detect thiocyanate content

There is an increasing demand for monitoring environmental pollutants and the control requires new sensing materials with better sensitivity, selectivity and reliability. In this study, a series of Co₇ clusters incorporating various flexible polyhydroxyamine ligands are explored, with the first report of thiocyanate recognition triggered by crystal formation using a Co₇ crystal (1). For this, we have fortunately synthesized three new mixed metal Co₇ clusters with fascinating structural features. The clusters were characterized by spectroscopic and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods and later by DFT calculations. Due to its better emission spectrum, 1 was further utilized for evaluating its sensing ability towards various anions in water. Surprisingly, 1 shows better quenching ability towards the recognition of SCN⁻ with a better binding constant. The luminescence quenching towards SCN⁻ detection was further verified by the single crystal method, HSAB principle (symbiosis) and theoretical calculations such as DFT studies. The SCXRD data clearly suggest that the Co₇ (1) can be converted into Co₁₄ (1a) by direct reaction with NaSCN under ambient conditions. Besides the soft/hard acid–base concept (symbiosis), the energies of formation, and Co–NCS and Co–OH₂ bond energies (as unravelled by DFT) are responsible for this transformation. Therefore, 1 can be used as a selective and sensitive sensor for the detection of thiocyanate anions based on the fluorescence amplification and quenching method. Further, the designed cluster has also been utilized to detect anions in human blood samples to differentiate a smoker and a non-smoker. It has been concluded that the samples of smokers have a high degree of thiocyanate (∼12 or 9.5 mg L⁻¹) in comparison to those of non-smokers (2–3 mg L⁻¹). Thus, this kind of cluster material has high potentiality in the field of bio-medical science in future endeavours for identification of the extent of thiocyanate content in smokers.

A new Co based sensor for thiocyanate recognition by formation of the dimeric crystals is designed to distinguish a smoker from a non-smoker.

Binder-free and high-loading sulfurized polyacrylonitrile cathode for lithium/sulfur batteries

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is a promising active material for Li/S batteries owing to its high sulfur utilization and long-term cyclability. However, because SPAN electrodes are synthesized using powder, they require large amounts of electrolyte, conducting agents, and binder, which reduces the practical energy density. Herein, to improve the practical energy density, we fabricated bulk-type SPAN disk cathodes from pressed sulfur and polyacrylonitrile powders using a simple heating process. The SPAN disks could be used directly as cathode materials because their π–π structures provide molecular-level electrical connectivity. In addition, the electrodes had interconnected pores, which improved the mobility of Li⁺ ions by allowing homogeneous adsorption of the electrolyte. The specific capacity of the optimal electrode was very high (517 mA h g_electrode⁻¹). Furthermore, considering the weights of the anode, separator, cathode, and electrolyte, the Li/S cell exhibited a high practical energy density of 250 W h kg⁻¹. The areal capacity was also high (8.5 mA h cm⁻²) owing to the high SPAN loading of 16.37 mg cm⁻². After the introduction of 10 wt% multi-walled carbon nanotubes as a conducting agent, the SPAN disk electrode exhibited excellent cyclability while maintaining a high energy density. This strategy offers a potential candidate for Li/S batteries with high practical energy densities.
