A Modulator-Induced Defect-Formation Strategy to Hierarchically Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks with High Stability

Chemistry of Formate and Water Ligands on Metal Oxide Cluster Nodes of Metal-Organic Framework hcp Hf-UiO-66: Keys to Understanding Reactivity of Paired μ2-OH and Defect Sites

Many metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporate nodes that are metal oxide clusters, and ligands that have been observed on these nodes include formates, acetates, water, hydroxyl groups, and others, all of which are potentially important in affecting reactivities for applications in separations, catalysis, and sensing. Formate is a common node ligand, arising from formic acid used as a modulator and from N,N-dimethylformamide used as a solvent in MOF syntheses. Yet only little work has been reported characterizing the reactivities of node formate ligands. Infrared spectra reported here show that formate bonds to two types of sites on the paired Hf6O8 nodes of hcp UiO-66, namely, defect and μ2-OH sites. Quantifying the number of formate ligands by 1H NMR spectroscopy of digested samples showed an almost equal number of formate ligands on the two sites, indicating the likelihood that they neighbor each other. These formate ligands interact with water molecules, reversibly switching their bonding from bidentate to monodentate. The formates on μ2-OH sites of hcp Hf-UiO-66 interact much more strongly with water than those on defect sites of the same node, and both interact more strongly than isolated defect sites of Hf-UiO-66. Correspondingly, the catalytic activities of hcp UiO-66 determined as turnover frequencies on each site are approximately twofold higher than those on UiO-66, bolstering the inference that methanol dehydration is catalyzed by a node defect site and a neighboring node μ2-OH site. The results show how MOFs, with their well-defined node structures, provide unprecedented opportunities to understand details of reactivities and catalysis on metal oxide clusters, in contrast to bulk metal oxide surfaces.

Hierarchically Micro-, Meso-, and Macro-Porous MOF Nanosystems for Localized Cross-Scale Dual-Biomolecule Loading and Guest-Carrier Cooperative Anticancer Therapy

Mass transfer of bulky molecules, e.g., bioenzymes, particularly for cross-scale multibiomolecules, imposes serious challenges for microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Here, we create a hierarchically porous MOF heterostructure featuring highly region-ordered micro-, meso-, and macro-pores by growing a microporous ZIF-8 shell onto a hollow Prussian blue core through an epitaxial growth strategy. This allows for localized loading of large bioenzyme glucose oxidase (GOx) and small drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) within specific pores simultaneously and triggers unique guest-carrier cooperative anticancer capabilities. The stable ZIF-8 outer layer effectively blocks the core pores, preventing the undesired leakage of GOx into normal tissues. The acidity-induced ZIF-8 degradation gradually releases Zn2+ and loaded 5-FU for chemotherapy under acidic tumor microenvironments. With the loss of the shielding effect of the ZIF-8 coating, the released GOx depletes intratumoral glucose (Glu) for starvation therapy. Notably, an accelerated cascade reaction occurs between ZIF-8 decomposition and GOx release, facilitated by the modulator factor of Glu. This culminates in the realization of synergistic cancer therapy, as comprehensively demonstrated by in vitro and in vivo experiments, as well as transcriptome sequencing analyses. Our work not only introduces a hierarchically porous MOF heterostructure with highly region-ordered pores but also provides a perspective for guest-carrier cooperative anticancer therapy.

Co-immobilization of a bi-enzymatic cascade into hierarchically porous MIL-53 for efficient 6'-sialyllactose production

6'-Sialyllactose (6'-SL), the most abundant sialylated human milk oligosaccharide, has attracted attention for its potential application in supplementary infant formulas. Herein, we report a facile strategy to construct a cascade bioreactor for the enzymatic synthesis of 6'-SL by co-immobilizing an enzymatic module consisting of CMP-sialic acid synthase and α-2,6-sialyltransferase into hierarchically porous MIL-53 (HP-MIL-53). The as-prepared HP-MIL-53 showed high enzyme immobilization capacity, reaching 226 mg g-1. Furthermore, the co-immobilized enzymes exhibited higher initial catalytic efficiency, and thermal, pH and storage stability than the free ones. Finally, the 6'-SL yield remained >80% after 13 cycles of use. We expect that HP-MIL-53 would have potential industrial applications in the enzymatic modular synthesis of 6'-SL and other glycans.

Modulated synthesis of hcp MOFs for preferential CO2 capture

We herein show that the μ2-OH bridging groups in the double M12O8(OH)14 clusters of hcp UiO-66 could act as a preferential CO2 sorption site, compared to fcu UiO-66. As such, hcp-UiO-66-0.015 shows a high binary CO2 sorption capacity of 0.31 mmol g-1 and CO2/N2 (15/85) mixture selectivity of 87 at 298 K and 1 bar, which holds great potential for post-combustion CO2 capture.

Defect-Engineered Metal-Organic Frameworks as Nanocarriers for Pharmacotherapy: Insights into Intracellular Dynamics at The Single Particle Level

Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks (nanoMOFs) are widely implemented in a host of assays involving drug delivery, biosensing catalysis, and bioimaging. However, the cell pathways and cell fate remain poorly understood. Here, a new fluorescent nanoMOF integrating ATTO 655 into surface defects of colloidal UiO-66 is synthesized, allowing to track the spatiotemporal localization of Single nanoMOF in live cells. Density functional theory reveals the stronger binding of ATTO 655 to the Zr6 cluster nodes compared with phosphate and Alendronate Sodium. Parallelized tracking of the spatiotemporal localization of thousands of nanoMOFs and analysis using machine learning platforms reveals whether nanoMOFs remain outside as well as their cellular internalization pathways. To quantitatively assess their colocalization with endo/lysosomal compartments, a colocalization proxy approach relying on the nanoMOF detection of particles in one channel to the signal in the corresponding endo/lysosomal compartments channel, considering signal versus local background intensity ratio and signal-to-noise ratio is developed. This strategy mitigates colocalization value inflation from high or low signal expression in endo/lysosomal compartments. The results accurately measure the nanoMOFs' colocalization from early to late endosomes and lysosomes and emphasize the importance of understanding their intracellular dynamics based on single-particle tracking for optimal and safe drug delivery.

Avoiding the Kinetic Inertness of Chromium Ions Using a Coordination Substitution Strategy for the Rapid Synthesis of Chromium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (Cr-MOFs) are very attractive in a wide range of applications due to their robustness and high porosity. However, the kinetic inertness of chromium ions results in the synthesis of Cr-MOFs often taking prolonged reaction times, which limit their industrial applications. Herein, we report a novel synthesis strategy based on coordination substitution, which overcomes the kinetic inertness of chromium ions and can synthesize Cr-MOFs in a shorter time. The versatility of this strategy has been demonstrated by producing several known Cr-MOFs, such as TYUT-96Cr, MIL-100Cr, MIL-101Cr, and MIL-53Cr. PXRD, SEM, TEM, 77 K N2 adsorption, and TGA have proved that the Cr-MOFs synthesized using this new strategy have good crystallinity, high porosity, and excellent thermal stability. The synthesis mechanism was investigated using theoretical calculations.

Customizable Zr-MOF nanoantidote-based multieffective arsenic detoxification and its extended low-toxic therapy

Arsenic (As) poisoning has become a global public problem threatening human health. Chelation therapy (CT) is the preferred treatment for arsenic poisoning. Nevertheless, efficient and safe arsenic removal in vivo remains a daunting challenge due to the limitations of chelators, including weak affinity, poor cell membrane penetration, and short half-life. Herein, a mercapto-functionalized and size-tunable hierarchical porous Zr-MOF (UiO-66-TC-SH) is developed, which possesses abundant arsenic chemisorption sites, effective cell uptake ability, and long half-life, thereby efficiently removing toxic arsenic in vivo. Moreover, the strong binding affinity of UiO-66-TC-SH for arsenic reduces systemic toxicity caused by off-target effects. In animal trials, UiO-66-TC-SH decreases the blood arsenic levels of acute arsenic poisoning mice to a normal value within 48 h, and the efficacy is superior to clinical drugs 2,3-dimercaptopropanesulfonic acid sodium salt (DMPS). Meanwhile, UiO-66-TC-SH also significantly mitigates the arsenic accumulation in the metabolic organs of chronic arsenic poisoning mice. Surprisingly, UiO-66-TC-SH also accelerates the metabolism of arsenic in organs of tumor-bearing mice and alleviates the side effects of arsenic drugs antitumor therapy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Arsenic (As) contamination has become a global problem threatening public health. The present clinical chelation therapy (CT) still has some limitations, including the weak affinity, poor cell membrane permeability and short half-life of hydrophilic chelators. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based multieffective arsenic removal strategy in vivo is proposed for the first time. Mercapto-functionalized and size-tunable hierarchical porous Zr-MOF nanoantidote (denoted as UiO-66-TC-SH) is accordingly designed and synthesized. After injection, UiO-66-TC-SH can form Zr-O-As bonds and As-S bonds with arsenic, thus enhancing arsenic adsorption capacity, cycling stability and systemic safety simultaneously. The acute arsenic poisoning model results indicate that UiO-66-TC-SH shows superior efficacy to the clinical drug sodium dimercaptopropanesulfonate (DMPS). More meaningfully, we find that UiO-66-TC-SH also accelerates the metabolism of arsenic in organs of tumor-bearing mice and alleviates side effects of arsenic drugs anti-tumor therapy.

Tuning Coordination in ZIF-67 Through the Solid-State Thermal Synthesis for Balancing Structural Stability and Catalytic Reactivity

Tailor-made unsaturated coordination of metal ions or organic linkers in zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) has great potential in tuning the ZIFs' properties and reactivity for their applications. Taking advantage of the solid-state thermal (SST) method as a facile and eco-friendly synthesis method, the rational coordination of metal ions with imidazole ligands in ZIF-67 through the SST method is investigated. The rational precursor ratio (metal-to-ligand source) under the solvent-free SST method emerges as a perfect strategy to tune the coordinately unsaturated sites within the ZIF-67 frameworks. Different analysis techniques, computational methods (DFT), and catalytic model reactions examine unsaturated coordination in ZIF-67 materials (defect structures). The unsaturated coordination provides unique characteristic properties on materials with excellent catalytic performance. However, the higher reactive properties are negotiated with weaker structural stability on materials. In addition, the post-SST approach is applied to enable rational coordination and modify the pristine ZIF-67 materials. The post-SST method rearranges and modifies coordination in the framework of materials. These findings are crucial to understanding the role of the uncoordinated degree to balance with structural stability based on ZIF-67, which is critical for effective heterogeneous catalysts.

Structure-Assisted Boronic Acid Implanted Mesoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks for Specific Extraction of cis-Diol Molecules

cis-Diol-containing molecules, an essential type of compounds in living organisms, have attracted intensive research interest from various fields. The analysis of cis-diol-containing molecules is still suffering from some drawbacks, including low abundance and abundant interference. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have proven to be an ideal sorbent for sample preparation. However, most of the reported MOFs are mainly restricted to a microporous regime (pore size <2 nm), which greatly limits the application. Herein, a facile strategy is established to construction of boronate affinity MOFs via the postsynthetic ligand-exchange process. Owing to the fact that the ligand-exchange process was assisted by the structural integrity of the primitive metal-organic framework and the great compatibility of click chemistry, the obtained EPBA-PCN-333(Fe) is able to realize the maximum maintaining the porosity and crystallinity of the parent material. Several intriguing features of EPBA-PCN-333(Fe) (e.g., excellent selectivity, efficient diffusion, good accessibility, and size exclusion effect) are experimentally demonstrated via a series of cis-diol-containing molecules with different molecular sizes (small molecules, glycopeptides, and glycoproteins). The binding performance of EPBA-PCN-333(Fe) is evaluated by employing catechol as the test molecule (binding capacity: 0.25 mmol/g, LOD: 200 ng/mL). Finally, the real-world applications of EPBA-PCN-333(Fe) were demonstrated by the detection of nucleosides of human urine samples.

Boosting humoral and cellular immunity with enhanced STING activation by hierarchical mesoporous metal-organic framework adjuvants

Vaccination is essential for preventing and controlling infectious diseases, along with reducing mortality. Developing safe and versatile adjuvants to enhance humoral and cellular immune responses to vaccines remains a key challenge in vaccine development. Here, we designed hierarchical mesoporous MOF-801 (HM801) using a Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) and a Pluronics F127 in an aqueous phase system. Meanwhile, we synthesized a novel SARS-CoV-2 nanovaccine (R@M@HM801) with a high loading capacity for both the STING agonist (MSA-2) and the Delta receptor binding domain (Delta-RBD) antigen. R@M@HM801 enhanced MSA-2 and RBD utilization and effectively co-delivered MSA-2 and RBD antigens to antigen-presenting cells in the draining lymph nodes, thereby promoting the activation of both T and B cells. Lymphocyte single-cell analysis showed that R@M@HM801 stimulated robust CD11b+CD4+ T cells, CXCR5+CD4+ T follicular helper (Tfh), and durable CD4+CD44+CD62L-, CD8+CD44+CD62L- effector memory T cell (TEM) immune responses, and promoted the proliferative activation of CD26+ B cells in vivo. Meanwhile, R@M@HM801 induced stronger specific antibodies and neutralization of pseudovirus against Delta compared to the RBD + MAS-2 and RBD + MAS-2 + Alum vaccines. Our study demonstrated the efficacy of a hierarchical mesoporous HM801 and its potential immune activation mechanism in enhancing adaptive immune responses against viruses and other diseases.

Hybrid Water-Harvesting Channels Delivering Wide-Range and Supersensitive Passive Fluorescence Humidity Sensors

The development of optical humidity detection has been of considerable interest in highly integrated wearable electronics and packaged equipment. However, improving their capacities for color recognition at ultralow humidity and response-recovery rate remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a type of hybrid water-harvesting channel to construct brand-new passive fluorescence humidity sensors (PFHSs). Specifically, the hybrid water-harvesting channels involve porous metal-organic frameworks and a hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) network that can capture water vapors from the ambient environment even at ultralow humidity, into which polar-responsive aggregation-induced emission molecules are doped to impart humidity-sensitive luminescence colors. As a result, the PFHSs exhibit clearly defined fluorescence signals within 0-98% RH coupling with desirable performances such as a fast response rate, precise quantitative feedback, and durable reversibility. Given the flexible processability of this system, we further upgrade the porous structure via electrostatic spinning to furnish a kind of Nano-PFHSs, demonstrating an impressive response time (<100 ms). Finally, we validate the promising applications of these sensors in electronic humidity monitoring and successfully fabricate a portable and rapid humidity indicator card.

MoO3/MIL-125-NH2 with boosted peroxidase-like activity for electrochemical staphylococcus aureus sensing via specific recognition of bacteriophages

Herein, novel nanozyme mimics MoO3/MIL-125-NH2 were reported and conjugated with bacteriophages as a new electrochemical probe for high sensitivity and specific electrochemical detection of staphylococcus aureus. The excellent peroxidase-like activity of MoO3/MIL-125-NH2 composites was attributed to the integration of MIL-125-NH2 with MoO3, which can boost the generation of superoxide radicals (O• 2-) and thus promote the oxidation of TMB in the presence of H2O2. In this work, two bacteriophages named SapYZU04 and SapYZU10 were isolated from sewage samples by using staphylococcus aureus YZUsa12 as the host. In comparison, MoO3/MIL-125-NH2@SapYZU04 was selected as a recognition agent. The DPV current declined linearly with staphylococcus aureus YZUsa12 concentration in the range of 101-108 CFU mL-1, with a low detection limit of 16 CFU mL-1 (S/N = 3). 20 strains including 13 host strains and 7 non-host strains were used to evaluate the selectivity of the proposed sensor. Regardless of the differences in the degrees of lytic performance for phage SapYZU04, all selected host strains can be screened with merely the same DPV current. Host spectrum-oriented bacteriophage sensing is of great importance for the practical application of bacteriophage-based biosensors in the future.

Constructing ordered and tunable extrinsic porosity in covalent organic frameworks via water-mediated soft-template strategy

As one of the most attractive methods for the synthesis of ordered hierarchically porous crystalline materials, the soft-template method has not appeared in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) due to the incompatibility of surfactant self-assembly and guided crystallization process of COF precursors in the organic phase. Herein, we connect the soft templates to the COF backbone through ionic bonds, avoiding their crystallization incompatibilities, thus introducing an additional ordered arrangement of soft templates into the anionic microporous COFs. The ion exchange method is used to remove the templates while maintaining the high crystallinity of COFs, resulting in the construction of COFs with ordered hierarchically micropores/mesopores, herein named OHMMCOFs (OHMMCOF-1 and OHMMCOF-2). OHMMCOFs exhibit significantly enhanced functional group accessibility and faster mass transfer rate. The extrinsic porosity can be adjusted by changing the template length, concentration, and ratio. Cationic guanidine-based COFs (OHMMCOF-3) are also constructed using the same method, which verifies the scalability of the soft-template strategy. This work provides a path for constructing ordered and tunable extrinsic porosity in COFs with greatly improved mass transfer efficiency and functional group accessibility.

Improving the removal efficiency of oxygenated volatile organic compounds by defective UiO-66 regulated with water

The purification of oxygenated volatile organic compounds VOCs (OVOCs), important precursors of ozone and particulate matters, has triggered intensive research interests. UiO-66 with high photocatalytic activity have shown great potential. However, the lack of active sites severely limited the trapping and degradation of OVOCs. Herein, reo-UiO-66 with increased specific surface area, hierarchical porous structure and tunable acidic/basic sites was synthesized by simply adding water as the modulator. XRD, TGA and FTIR results confirmed the formation of reo-defects, which significantly affected the surface hydrophilicity and active sites of UiO-66. The adsorption of Lewis acidic acetaldehyde was enhanced by 265 times with coordinative unsaturated Zr acting as the dominant adsorption sites. The degradation efficiency of typical OVOCs (acetaldehyde and acetone) increased from 0% and 25% to 50% and 73%, respectively. This work provided a facile method to modulate the micro-environment in MOFs for the efficient capture and catalytic purification of OVOCs.

Hierarchically Micro- and Mesoporous Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Through Selective Ligand Removal

A new method to engineer hierarchically porous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) through selective ligand removal (SeLiRe) is presented. This innovative approach involves crafting mixed-ligand ZIFs (ML-ZIFs) with varying proportions of 2-aminobenzimidazole (NH2-bIm) and 2-methylimidazole (2-mIm), followed by controlled thermal treatments. This process creates a dual-pore system, incorporating both micropores and additional mesopores, suggesting selective cleavage of metal-ligand coordination bonds. Achieving this delicate balance requires adjustment of heating conditions for each mixed-ligand ratio, enabling the targeted removal of NH2-bIm from a variety of ML-ZIFs while preserving their inherent microporous framework. Furthermore, the distribution of the initial thermolabile ligand plays a pivotal role in determining the resulting mesopore architecture. The efficacy of this methodology is aptly demonstrated through the assessment of hierarchically porous ZIFs for their potential in adsorbing diverse organic dyes in aqueous environments. Particularly striking is the performance of the 10%NH2-ZIF-2 h, which showcases an astonishing 40-fold increase in methylene blue adsorption capacity compared to ZIF-8, attributed to larger pore volumes that accelerate the diffusion of dye molecules to adsorption sites. This versatile technique opens new avenues for designing micro/mesoporous ZIFs, particularly suited for liquid media scenarios necessitating efficient active site access and optimal diffusion kinetics, such as purification, catalysis, and sensing.

From nano- to macroarchitectures: designing and constructing MOF-derived porous materials for persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) have gained significant attention as an effective approach for the elimination of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in water treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are regarded as promising catalysts for activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) due to their tunable and diverse structure and composition. By the rational nanoarchitectured design of MOF-derived nanomaterials, the excellent performance and customized functions can be achieved. However, the intrinsic fine powder form and agglomeration ability of MOF-derived nanomaterials have limited their practical engineering application. Recently, a great deal of effort has been put into shaping MOFs into macroscopic objects without sacrificing the performance. This review presents recent advances in the design and synthetic strategies of MOF-derived nano- and macroarchitectures for PS-AOPs to degrade EOCs. Firstly, the strategies of preparing MOF-derived diverse nanoarchitectures including hierarchically porous, hollow, yolk-shell, and multi-shell structures are comprehensively summarized. Subsequently, the approaches of manufacturing MOF-based macroarchitectures are introduced in detail. Moreover, the PS-AOP application and mechanisms of MOF-derived nano- and macromaterials as catalysts to eliminate EOCs are discussed. Finally, the prospects and challenges of MOF-derived materials in PS-AOPs are discussed. This work will hopefully guide the design and development of MOF-derived porous materials in SR-AOPs.

Defects materials of Institut Lavoisier-125(Ti) materials enhanced photocatalytic activity for toluene and chlorobenzene mixtures degradation: Mechanism study

In this paper, the effect of three monocarboxylic acids on MIL-125 synthesis was systematically investigated and the results were discussed in detail. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption curves indicated that small molecule acids (acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid) affected the morphology of MIL-125 and induced lamellar pores and structural defects in the crystals. Thermogravimetric measurements confirmed the presence of acid-regulated defective metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Electrochemical tests and density function theory calculations indicated that acid modulation could change the forbidden bandwidth of the material. The acid modification strategy effectively promoted the transfer of photogenerated electrons and enhanced the adsorption and activation of O2 and H2O molecules, generating reactive radicals. The modified MOFs also showed excellent performance in the removal of mixed toluene and chlorobenzene. The degradation pathways of the mixture were analyzed by in situ infrared (IR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The mixture was converted to chlorophenolic intermediates in the presence of reactive oxygen species, further decomposed to form ethers and ethanol, and finally formed small molecules such as carbon dioxide and water. A feasible method was provided for the preparation of photocatalysts for the treatment of mixed VOCs.

Unveiling the Role and Stabilization Mechanism of Cu+ into Defective Ce-MOF Clusters during CO Oxidation

Copper single-site catalysts supported on Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are well-known systems in which the nature of the active sites has been deeply investigated. Conversely, the redox chemistry of the Ce-counterparts is more limited, because of the often-unclear Cu2+/Cu+ and Ce4+/Ce3+ pairs behavior. Herein, we studied a novel Cu2+ single-site catalyst supported on a defective Ce-MOF, Cu/UiO-67(Ce), as a catalyst for the CO oxidation reaction. Based on a combination of in situ DRIFT and operando XAS spectroscopies, we established that Cu+ sites generated during catalysis play a pivotal role. Moreover, the oxygen vacancies associated with Ce3+ sites and presented in the defective Cu/UiO-67(Ce) material are able to activate the O2 molecules, closing the catalytic cycle. The results presented in this work open a new route for the design of active and stable single-site catalysts supported on defective Ce-MOFs.

Recent Progress on Conversion of Lignocellulosic Biomass by MOF-Immobilized Enzyme

The enzyme catalysis conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into valuable chemicals and fuels showed a bright outlook for replacing fossil resources. However, the high cost and easy deactivation of free enzymes restrict the conversion process. Immobilization of enzymes in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is one of the most promising strategies due to MOF materials' tunable building units, multiple pore structures, and excellent biocompatibility. Also, MOFs are ideal support materials and could enhance the stability and reusability of enzymes. In this paper, recent progress on the conversion of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin by MOF-immobilized enzymes is extensively reviewed. This paper focuses on the immobilized enzyme performances and enzymatic mechanism. Finally, the challenges of the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass by MOF-immobilized enzyme are discussed.

Designed Synthesis of Fe/Zr Bimetallic Organic Framework to Enhance the Selective Conversion of H2S to Sulfur

The development of stable and effective catalysts to convert toxic H2S into high value-added sulfur is essential for production safety and environmental protection. However, the inherent defects of traditional iron- and zirconium-based catalysts, such as poor activity, high oxygen consumption, and low sulfur selectivity, limit their further developments and applications. Herein, the Fe-Zr bimetallic organic framework FeUIO-66(x) with different cubic morphologies was synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The results indicate that the introduction of Fe not only increases the specific surface area and weak L-sites of the catalyst without changing its crystal structure, which provides enough reaction space and more active sites for the adsorption and activation of H2S, but also reduces the activation energy of the reaction, significantly promoting the selective oxidation of H2S. As a result, the as-obtained FeUIO-66(1) catalyst exhibits the highest desulfurization activity and superior durability and water resistance stability, and its H2S conversion and sulfur selectivity within 50 h are 100 and 88%, respectively. More importantly, the structure of the catalyst after the desulfurization reaction is consistent with that of the fresh counterpart. The study offers new insights into the development of effective and stable bimetallic catalysts to eliminate H2S and recycle sulfur.

Hierarchically Porous Covalent Organic Frameworks: Synthesis Methods and Applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high porosity have garnered considerable interest for various applications owing to their robust and customizable structure. However, conventional COFs are hindered by their narrow pore size, which poses limitations for applications such as heterogeneous catalysis and guest delivery that typically involve large molecules. The development of hierarchically porous COF (HP-COF), featuring a multi-scale aperture distribution, offers a promising solution by significantly enhancing the diffusion capacity and mass transfer for larger molecules. This review focuses on the recent advances in the synthesis strategies of HP-COF materials, including topological structure design, in-situ templating, monolithic COF synthesis, defect engineering, and crystalline self-transformation. The specific operational principles and affecting factors in the synthesis process are summarized and discussed, along with the applications of HP-COFs in heterogeneous catalysis, toxic component treatment, optoelectronics, and the biomedical field. Overall, this review builds a bridge to understand HP-COFs and provides guidance for further development of them on synthesis strategies and applications.

Rapid and large-capacity adsorption of heterocyclic aromatic amines on heat resistant two-dimensional metal organic layer/cellulose nanofiber aerogels constructed by a thawing cross-linking strategy

Composite aerogels, formed by the combination of nanoscale polymers and highly efficient adsorbents, offer the potential to deploy adsorbent distinct separation properties into a processable matrix. This paper presents a method for the fabrication of low energy bio-aerogels with high ductility, excellent wet strength and favorable heat resistance, based on cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) bound by calcium carbonate particles (CaCO3) via a simple process of ice induction, cross-linking during freezing and freeze-drying. Due to induced defects, two-dimensional metal-organic layers (MOLs) were rich in mesoporous structure and embedded in the aerogel (AGCa-MOL), which exhibited a powerful adsorption capacity. AGCa-MOL could take full advantage of their hierarchical pores and available surface area to obtain high adsorption capacity (0.694-5.470 μmol/g) and rapid adsorption kinetics (5 min) for 14 heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). Moreover, the CaCO3 particles and MOLs gave the AGCa-MOL excellent thermal stability, so that it could maintain excellent adsorption capacity at a high temperature (100 °C) and be applied as an adsorbent to remove HAAs in the boiling marinade. The intrinsic potential of composite aerogels was revealed due to the synergistic properties of the various components in the composite aerogel.

Copper-decorated strategy based on defect-rich NH2-MIL-125(Ti) boosts efficient photocatalytic degradation of methyl mercaptan under sunlight

Photocatalysis has received significant attention as a technology that can solve environmental problems. Metal-organic frameworks are currently being used as novel photocatalysts but are still limited by the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, low photogenerated electron migration efficiency and poor solar light utilization rate. In this work, a novel photocatalyst was successfully constructed by introducing Cu species into thermal activated mixed-ligand NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) via defect engineering strategy. The constructed defect structure not only provided 3D-interconnected gas transfer channels, but also offered suitable space to accommodate introduced Cu species. For the most effective photocatalyst 0.2Cu/80%NH2-MIL-125 (300 °C) with optimized Cu content, the photocatalytic degradation rate of CH3SH achieved 4.65 times higher than that of pristine NH2-MIL-125 under visible light (λ > 420 nm). At the same time, it showed great degradation efficiency under natural sunlight, 100 ppm CH3SH was completely removed within 25 min in full solar light illumination. The improved catalytic efficiency is mainly due to the synergistic effect of the integrated Schottky junction and rich-defective NH2-MIL-125, which improved the bandgap and band position, and thus facilitated the separation and transfer of the photo-generated carriers. This work provided a facile way to integrate Schottky junctions and rich-defective MOFs with high stability. Due to its excellent degradation performance under sunlight, it also offered a prospective strategy for rational design of high-efficiency catalysts applied in environmental technologies.

A Review on Recent Trends and Future Developments in Electrochemical Sensing

Electrochemical methods and devices have ignited prodigious interest for sensing and monitoring. The greatest challenge for science is far from meeting the expectations of consumers. Electrodes made of two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, metal-organic frameworks, MXene, and transition metal dichalcogenides as well as alternative electrochemical sensing methods offer potential to improve selectivity, sensitivity, detection limit, and response time. Moreover, these advancements have accelerated the development of wearable and point-of-care electrochemical sensors, opening new possibilities and pathways for their applications. This Review presents a critical discussion of the recent developments and trends in electrochemical sensing.

Phosphorus removal from water by the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based adsorbents: A review for structure, mechanism, and current progress

Efficacious phosphate removal is essential for mitigating eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems and complying with increasingly stringent phosphate emission regulations. Chemical adsorption, characterized by simplicity, prominent treatment efficiency, and convenient recovery, is extensively employed for profound phosphorus removal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived metal/carbon composites, surpassing the limitations of separate components, exhibit synergistic effects, rendering them tremendously promising for environmental remediation. This comprehensive review systematically summarizes MOFs-based materials' properties and their structure-property relationships tailored for phosphate adsorption, thereby enhancing specificity towards phosphate. Furthermore, it elucidates the primary mechanisms influencing phosphate adsorption by MOFs-based composites. Additionally, the review introduces strategies for designing and synthesizing efficacious phosphorus capture and regeneration materials. Lastly, it discusses and illuminates future research challenges and prospects in this field. This summary provides novel insights for future research on superlative MOFs-based adsorbents for phosphate removal.

Manipulation of interfacial charge dynamics for metal-organic frameworks toward advanced photocatalytic applications

Compared to other known materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the highest surface area and the lowest densities; as a result, MOFs are advantageous in numerous technological applications, especially in the area of photocatalysis. Photocatalysis shows tantalizing potential to fulfill global energy demands, reduce greenhouse effects, and resolve environmental contamination problems. To exploit highly active photocatalysts, it is important to determine the fate of photoexcited charge carriers and identify the most decisive charge transfer pathway. Methods to modulate charge dynamics and manipulate carrier behaviors may pave a new avenue for the intelligent design of MOF-based photocatalysts for widespread applications. By summarizing the recent developments in the modulation of interfacial charge dynamics for MOF-based photocatalysts, this minireview can deliver inspiring insights to help researchers harness the merits of MOFs and create versatile photocatalytic systems.

Recent Advances in Hierarchical Porous Engineering of MOFs and Their Derived Materials for Catalytic and Battery: Methods and Application

Hierarchical porous materials have attracted the attention of researchers due to their enormous specific surface area, maximized active site utilization efficiency, and unique structure and properties. In this context, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a unique mix of properties that make them particularly appealing as tunable porous substrates containing highly active sites. This review focuses on recent advances in the types and synthetic strategies of hierarchical porous MOFs and their derived materials. Furthermore, it highlights the relationship between the mass diffusion and transport of hierarchical porous structures and the pore size with examples and simulations, while identifying their potential and limitations. On this basis, how the synthesis conditions affect the structure and electrochemical properties of MOFs based hierarchical porous materials with different structures is discussed, highlighting the prospects and challenges for the synthetization, as well as further scientific research and practical applications. Finally, some insights into current research and future design ideas for advanced MOFs based hierarchical porous materials are presented.

Perspective into ion storage of pristine metal-organic frameworks in capacitive deionization

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring tunable conductivity, tailored pore/structure and high surface area, have emerged as promising electrode nanomaterials for ion storage in capacitive deionization (CDI) and garnered tremendous attention in recent years. Despite the many advantages, the perspective from which MOFs should be designed and prepared for use as CDI electrode materials still faces various challenges that hinder their practical application. This summary proposes design principles for the pore size, pore environment, structure and dimensions of MOFs to precisely tailor the surface area, selectivity, conductivity, and Faradaic activity of electrode materials based on the ion storage mechanism in the CDI process. The account provides a new perspective to deepen the understanding of the fundamental issues of MOFs electrode materials to further meet the practical applications of CDI.

Stability of Zr-Based UiO-66 Metal-Organic Frameworks in Basic Solutions

Although Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit robust chemical and physical stability in the presence of moisture and acidic conditions, their susceptibility to nucleophilic attacks from bases poses a critical challenge to their overall stability. Herein, we systematically investigate the stability of Zr-based UiO-66 (UiO = University of Oslo) MOFs in basic solutions. The impact of 11 standard bases, including inorganic salts and organic bases, on the stability of these MOFs is examined. The destruction of the framework is confirmed through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns, and the monitored dissolution of ligands from the framework is assessed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Our key findings reveal a direct correlation between the strength and concentration of the base and the destruction of the MOFs. The summarized data provide valuable insights that can guide the practical application of Zr-based UiO-66 MOFs under basic conditions, offering essential information for their optimal utilization in various settings.

Transformation of SBUs and Synergy of MOF Host-Guest in Single Crystalline State: Ingenious Strategies for Modulating Third-Order NLO Signals

Central metal exchange can innovatively open the cavity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by alternating the framework topology. Here, the single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation is reported from a Co-based MOF {[Co1.25 (HL)0.5 (Pz-NH2 )0.25 (µ3 -O)0.25 (µ2 -OH)0.25 (H2 O)]·0.125 Co·0.125 L·10.25H2 O}n (Co-MOF, L = 5,5'-(1H-2,3,5-triazole-1,4-diyl)diisophthalic acid) into two novel MOF materials, {[Cu1.75 L0.75 (Pz-NH2 )0.125 (µ3 -O)0.125 (µ2 -OH)0.25 (H2 O)0.375 ]•3CH3 CN}n (Cu-MOF) and {[Zn1.75 L0.625 (Pz-NH2 )0.25 (µ3 -O)0.25 (µ2 -O)0.25 (H2 O)1.25 ]•4CH3 CN}n (Zn-MOF), through exchanging the Co2+ in the MOF into Cu2+ or Zn2+ , respectively. The free Co2+ and L4- in the Co-MOF channels fuse with the skeleton during the Co→Cu and Co→Zn exchange processes, leading to the expansion of the channel space and the transformation of the secondary building units (SBUs) to form an adjustable skeleton. The nonlinear optical response results show that the MOFs generated by the exchange of the central metal exhibit different saturable absorption and the self-focusing effect. In addition, loading polypyrrole (PPy) into the MOFs can not only improve the stability of the MOFs but also further optimize the nonlinear optical behavior. This work suggests that SC-SC central metal exchange and the introduction of polymer molecules can tune the nonlinear optical response, which provides a new perspective for the future study of nonlinear optical materials.

MOF-Based Photocatalytic Membrane for Water Purification: A Review

Photocatalytic membranes can effectively integrate membrane separation and photocatalytic degradation processes to provide an eco-friendly solution for efficient water purification. It is of great significance to develop highly efficient photocatalytic membranes driven by visible light to ensure the long-term stability of membrane separation systems and the maximum utilization of solar energy. Metal-organic framework (MOF) is an emerging photocatalyst with a well-defined structure and tunable chemical properties, showing a broad application prospect in the construction of high-performance photocatalytic membranes. Herein, this work provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Initially, this work outlines the main tailoring strategies that facilitate the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of MOF-based photocatalysts. Next, this work introduces commonly used methods for fabricating MOF-based photocatalytic membranes. Subsequently, this work discusses the application and mechanisms of MOF-based photocatalytic membranes toward organic pollutant degradation, metal ion removal, and membrane fouling mitigation. Finally, challenges in developing MOF-based photocatalytic membranes and their practical applications are presented, while also pointing out future research directions toward overcoming these existing limitations.

Preparation of lysozyme-imprinted mesoporous Zr-based metal-organic frameworks with remarkable specific recognition

The development of high-performance protein-imprinted materials remains challenging due to defects concerning high mass transfer resistance and non-specific binding, which are crucial for protein purification and enrichment. In this paper, lysozyme-imprinted mesoporous Zr-based MOF (mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs) with specific and selective recognition of lysozyme (Lyz) were prepared by surface imprinting technology. In particular, the excellent hydrophilicity mesoporous MOFs (mesoUiO-66-NH2) with a pore size of 10 nm was prepared as a carrier for Lyz immobilization by an auxiliary modulation strategy to regulate the microporous structure of UiO-66-NH2 with the propionic acid solution, enabling massive loading of the macromolecular protein Lyz. The mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs reached a maximum saturation adsorption of 206.54 mg g-1 on Lyz in 20 min at 25 °C with an imprinting factor of 2.57 and selection factors of 2.02, 2.34, and 2.45 for cytochrome c (Cyt c), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine hemoglobin (BHb), respectively. More importantly, the mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs could specifically recognize Lyz from the mixed protein system. The adsorption capacity of Lyz could still reach 78.55% after 5 cycles with good cyclic regeneration performance. This provides a new research option for developing and applying novel porous MOF in biomolecule imprinting technology and the specific separation of biomolecules.

Radiation-Induced De Novo Defects in Metal-Organic Frameworks Boost CO2 Sorption

Defects in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can significantly change their local microstructures, thus notably leading to an alteration-induced performance in sorption or catalysis. However, achieving de novo defect engineering in MOFs under ambient conditions without the scarification of their crystallinity remains a challenge. Herein, we successfully synthesize defective ZIF-7 through 60Co gamma ray radiation under ambient conditions. The obtained ZIF-7 is defect-rich but also has excellent crystallinity, enhanced BET surface area, and hierarchical pore structure. Moreover, the amount and structure of these defects within ZIF-7 were determined from the two-dimensional (2D) 13C-1H frequency-switched Lee-Goldburg heteronuclear correlation (FSLG-HETCOR) spectra, continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Interestingly, the defects in ZIF-7 all strongly bind to CO2, leading to a remarkable enhancement of the CO2 sorption capability compared with that synthesized by the solvothermal method.

Synthetic control of correlated disorder in UiO-66 frameworks

Changing the perception of defects as imperfections in crystalline frameworks into correlated domains amenable to chemical control and targeted design might offer opportunities for the design of porous materials with superior performance or distinctive behavior in catalysis, separation, storage, or guest recognition. From a chemical standpoint, the establishment of synthetic protocols adapted to control the generation and growth of correlated disorder is crucial to consider defect engineering a practicable route towards adjusting framework function. By using UiO-66 as experimental platform, we systematically explored the framework chemical space of the corresponding defective materials. Periodic disorder arising from controlled generation and growth of missing cluster vacancies can be chemically controlled by the relative concentration of linker and modulator, which has been used to isolate a crystallographically pure "disordered" reo phase. Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to proof the coexistence of correlated domains of missing linker and cluster vacancies, whose relative sizes are fixed by the linker concentration. The relative distribution of correlated disorder in the porosity and catalytic activity of the material reveals that, contrarily to the common belief, surpassing a certain defect concentration threshold can have a detrimental effect.

Implementing Mesoporosity in Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks through Clip-Off Chemistry in Heterometallic Iron-Zinc ZIF-8

Bond breaking has emerged as a new tool to postsynthetically modify the pore structure in metal-organic frameworks since it allows us to obtain pore environments in structures that are inaccessible by other techniques. Here, we extend the concept of clip-off chemistry to archetypical ZIF-8, taking advantage of the different stabilities of the bonds between imidazolate and Zn and Fe metal atoms in heterometallic Fe-Zn-ZIF-8. We demonstrate that Fe centers can be removed selectively without affecting the backbone of the structure that is supported by the Zn atoms. This allows us to create mesopores within the highly stable ZIF-8 structure. The strategy presented, combined with control of the amount of iron centers incorporated into the structure, permits porosity engineering of ZIF materials and opens a new avenue for designing novel hierarchical porous frameworks.

Opportunities and Challenges of Metal-Organic Framework Micro/Nano Reactors for Cascade Reactions

Building bridges among different types of catalysts to construct cascades is a highly worthwhile pursuit, such as chemo-, bio-, and chemo-bio cascade reactions. Cascade reactions can improve the reaction efficiency and selectivity while reducing steps of separation and purification, thereby promoting the development of "green chemistry". However, compatibility issues in cascade reactions pose significant constraints on the development of this field, particularly concerning the compatibility of diverse catalyst types, reaction conditions, and reaction rates. Metal-organic framework micro/nano reactors (MOF-MNRs) are porous crystalline materials formed by the self-assembly coordination of metal sites and organic ligands, possessing a periodic network structure. Due to the uniform pore size with the capability of controlling selective transfer of substances as well as protecting active substances and the organic-inorganic parts providing reactive microenvironment, MOF-MNRs have attracted significant attention in cascade reactions in recent years. In this Perspective, we first discuss how to address compatibility issues in cascade reactions using MOF-MNRs, including structural design and synthetic strategies. Then we summarize the research progress on MOF-MNRs in various cascade reactions. Finally, we analyze the challenges facing MOF-MNRs and potential breakthrough directions and opportunities for the future.

Balancing the Crystallinity and Film Formation of Metal-Organic Framework Membranes through In Situ Modulation for Efficient Gas Separation

Polycrystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) layers hold great promise as molecular sieve membranes for efficient gas separation. Nevertheless, the high crystallinity tends to cause inter-crystalline defects/cracks in the nearby crystals, which makes crystalline porous materials face a great challenge in the fabrication of defect-free membranes. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate the balance between crystallinity and film formation of MOF membrane through a facile in situ modulation strategy. Monocarboxylic acid was introduced as a modulator to regulate the crystallinity via competitive complexation and thus concomitantly control the film-forming state during membrane growth. Through adjusting the ratio of modulator acid/linker acid, an appropriate balance between this structural "trade-off" was achieved. The resulting MOF membrane with moderate crystallinity and coherent morphology exhibits molecular sieving for H2 /CO2 separation with selectivity up to 82.5.

Controlled Partial Linker Thermolysis in Metal-Organic Framework UiO-66-NH2 to Give a Single-Site Copper Photocatalyst for the Functionalization of Terminal Alkynes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with expanding porosity and tailored pore environments are intriguing for catalytic applications. We report herein a straightforward method of controlled partial linker thermolysis to introduce desirable mesopores into mono-ligand MOFs, which is different from the classical thermolyzing method that starts from mixed-linker MOFs. UiO-66-NH2 , after partial ligand thermolysis, exhibits significant mesoporosity, retained crystal structure, improved charge photogeneration and abundant anchoring sites, which is ideal to explore single-site photocatalysis. Atomically dispersed Cu is then accommodated in the tailored pore. The resulting single-site Cu catalyst exhibits excellent performance for photocatalytic alkylation and oxidation coupling for the functionalization of terminal alkynes. The study highlights the advantage of controlled partial linker thermolysis to synthesize hierarchical MOFs to achieve the advanced single-site photocatalysis.

Tailoring the Nanoporosity and Photoactivity of Metal-Organic Frameworks With Rigid Dye Modulators for Toluene Purification

Facile synthesis of hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with adjustable porosity and high crystallinity attracts great attention yet remains challenging. Herein, a micromolar amount of dye-based modulator (Rhodamine B (RhB)) is employed to easily and controllably tailor the pore size of a Ti-based metal-organic framework (MIL-125-NH2 ). The RhB used in this method is easily removed by washing or photodegradation, avoiding secondary posttreatment. It is demonstrated that the carboxyl functional group and the steric effects of RhB are indispensable for enlarging the pore size of the MIL-125-NH2 . The resulting hierarchically porous MIL-125-NH2 (RH-MIL-125-NH2 ) exhibits optimized adsorption and photocatalytic activity because the newly formed mesopore with defects concurrently facilitates mass transport of guest molecules (toluene) and photogenerated charge separation. This work offers a meaningful basis for the construction of hierarchically porous MOFs and demonstrates the superiority of the hierarchical pore structure for adsorption and heterogeneous catalysis.

Yolk-Shell and Hollow Zr/Ce-UiO-66 for Manipulating Selectivity in Tandem Reactions and Photoreactions

One of the hallmarks of multicomponent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is to finely tune their active centers to achieve product selectivity. In particular, obtaining bimetallic MOF hollow structures with precisely tailored redox centers under the same topology is still challenging despite a recent surge of such efforts. Herein, we present an engineering strategy named "cluster labilization" to generate hierarchically porous MOF composites with hollow structures and tunable active centers. By partially replacing zirconium with cerium in the hexanuclear clusters of UiO-66, unevenly distributed yolk-shell structures (YSS) were formed. Through acid treatment or annealing of the YSS precursor, single-shell hollow structures (SSHS) or double-shell hollow structures (DSHS) can be obtained, respectively. The active centers in SSHS and DSHS differ in their species, valence, and spatial locations. More importantly, YSS, SSHS, and DSHS with distinct active centers and microenvironments exhibit tunable catalytic activity, reversed selectivity, and high stability in the tandem reaction and the photoreaction.

Water-Etched Approach to Hierarchically Porous Metal-Organic Frameworks with High Stability

The development of hierarchically porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high stability is desirable to expand their applications but remains challenging. Herein, an anionic sodalite-type microporous MOF (Yb-TTCA; TTCA3- = triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxylate) was synthesized, which shows outstanding catalytic activities for the cycloaddition of CO2 into cyclic carbonates. Moreover, the microporous Yb-TTCA can be transformed into a hierarchical micro- and mesoporous Yb-TTCA by water treatment with the mesopore sizes of 2 to 12 nm. The hierarchically porous Yb-TTCA (HP-Yb-TTCA) not only exhibits a high thermal stability up to 500 °C but also shows a high chemical stability in aqueous solutions with pH values ranging from 2 to 12. In addition, the HP-Yb-TTCA displays enhanced performance for the removal of organic dyes in comparison with microporous Yb-TTCA. This work provides a facile way to construct hierarchically porous MOF materials.

MOFganic Chemistry: Challenges and Opportunities for Metal-Organic Frameworks in Synthetic Organic Chemistry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous, crystalline solids constructed from organic linkers and inorganic nodes that have been widely studied for applications in gas storage, chemical separations, and drug delivery. Owing to their highly modular structures and tunable pore environments, we propose that MOFs have significant untapped potential as catalysts and reagents relevant to the synthesis of next-generation therapeutics. Herein, we outline the properties of MOFs that make them promising for applications in synthetic organic chemistry, including new reactivity and selectivity, enhanced robustness, and user-friendly preparation. In addition, we outline the challenges facing the field and propose new directions to maximize the utility of MOFs for drug synthesis. This perspective aims to bring together the organic and MOF communities to develop new heterogeneous platforms capable of achieving synthetic transformations that cannot be replicated by homogeneous systems.

Effective adsorptive removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) from aqueous solution by ZIF-8 derived adsorbent ZC-0.5

Efficient removal of antibiotics from the aquatic environment is urgently needed due to their obstinate accumulation and non-biodegradability. In this study, a mesoporous carbon material (ZC-0.5) was successfully synthesized for the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), one of the major antibiotics for the treatment of human and animal infections. ZIF-8 as the precursor of ZC-0.5, specifically, using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium laurate (SL) as dual templates and carbonizing at 800 ℃. This novel adsorbent exhibited a high proportion of mesopore (75.64%) and a large specific surface area (1459.73 m²·g^-1). The adsorption experiment examined the reusability of ZC-0.5 and that it could retain superior maximum adsorption capacities (167.45 mg∙L^-1) after five cycles of adsorption and desorption. The adsorption process satisfied the pseudo-second-order kinetic (PSO) and mixed first- and second-order kinetic (MOE). It also satisfied the Freundlich and Sips isotherm models. Moreover, thermodynamic calculation indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermal, and entropy-increasing. Furthermore, plausible adsorption mechanisms were explained through van der Waals force, electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic force, π-π interaction, and hydrogen bond. This work offers a new efficient adsorbent for antibiotic elimination.

Tetranuclear CuII Cluster as the Ten Node Building Unit for the Construction of a Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient C2 H2 /CO2 Separation

Rational design of high nuclear copper cluster-based metal-organic frameworks has not been established yet. Herein, we report a novel MOF (FJU-112) with the ten-connected tetranuclear copper cluster [Cu₄ (PO₃ )₂ (μ₂ -H₂ O)₂ (CO₂ )₄ ] as the node which was capped by the deprotonated organic ligand of H₄ L (3,5-Dicarboxyphenylphosphonic acid). With BPE (1,2-Bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) as the pore partitioner, the pore spaces in the structure of FJU-112 were divided into several smaller cages and smaller windows for efficient gas adsorption and separation. FJU-112 exhibits a high separation performance for the C₂ H₂ /CO₂ separation, which were established by the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms and further confirmed by the lab-scale dynamic breakthrough experiments. The grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations (GCMC) studies show that its high C₂ H₂ /CO₂ separation performance is contributed to the strong π-complexation interactions between the C₂ H₂ molecules and framework pore surfaces, leading to its more C₂ H₂ uptakes over CO₂ molecules.

A Novel Aluminum-Based Metal-Organic Framework with Uniform Micropores for Trace BTEX Adsorption

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential porous adsorbents for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX). A novel MOF, using low toxic aluminum (Al) as the metal, named as ZJU-620(Al), with uniform micropore size of 8.37±0.73 Å and specific surface area of 1347 m²  g^-1 , was synthesized. It is constructed by one-dimensional rod-shaped AlO₆ clusters, formate ligands and 4,4',4''-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl) tribenzoic ligands. ZJU-620(Al) exhibits excellent chemical-thermal stability and adsorption for trace BTEX, e.g., benzene adsorption of 3.80 mmol g^-1 at P/P₀ =0.01 and 298 K, which is the largest one reported. Using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations and Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, it was observed that the excellent adsorption could be attributed to the high affinity of BTEX molecules in ZJU-620(Al) micropores because the kinetic diameters of BTEX are close up to the pore size of ZJU-620(Al).

Construction of defected MOF-74 with preserved crystallinity for efficient catalytic cyanosilylation of benzaldehyde

Numerous open metal sites and well-developed micropores are the two most significant characteristics that should be imparted to design metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as effective catalysts. However, the construction of the best MOF catalyst with both these characteristics is challenging because the creation of numerous open metal sites generally triggers some structural collapse of the MOF. Herein, we report the construction of well-structured but defected MOFs through the growth of defected MOFs, where some of the original organic linkers were replaced with analog organic linkers, on the surface of a crystalline MOF template (MOF-on-MOF growth). Additional open metal sites within the MOF-74 structure were generated by replacing some of the 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-bezenedicarboxylic acid presenting in MOF-74 with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid due to the missing hydroxyl groups. And the resulting additional open metal sites within the MOF-74 structure resulted in enhanced catalytic activity for the cyanosilylation of aldehydes. However, the collapse of some of the well-developed MOF-74 structure was also followed by structural defects. Whereas, the growth of defected MOF-74 (D-MOF-74) on the well-crystallized MOF-74 template led to the production of relatively well-crystallized D-MOF-74. Core-shell type MOF-74@D-MOF-74 having abundant open metal sites with a preserved crystallinity exhibited the efficient catalytic cyanosilylation of several aldehydes. Additionally, MOF-74@D-MOF-74 displayed excellent recyclability during the consecutive catalytic cycles.

Metal Organic Framework Cubosomes

We demonstrate a general strategy for the synthesis of ordered bicontinuous-structured metal organic frameworks (MOFs) by using polymer cubosomes (PCs) with a double primitive structure (Im 3 ‾ ${\bar{3}}$ m symmetry) as the template. The filling of MOF precursors in the open channel of PCs, followed by their coordination and removal of the template, generates MOF cubosomes with a single primitive topology (Pm 3 ‾ ${\bar{3}}$ m) and average mesopore diameters of 60-65 nm. Mechanism study reveals that the formation of ZIF-8 cubosomes undergoes a new MOF growth process, which involves the formation of individual MOF seeds in the template, their growth and eventual fusion into the cubosomes. Their growth kinetics follows the Avrami equation with an Avrami exponent of n=3 and a growth rate of k=1.33×10^-4 , indicating their fast 3D heterogeneous growth mode. Serving as a bioreactor, the ZIF-8 cubosomes show high loading of trypsin enzyme, leading to a high catalytic activity in the proteolysis of bovine serum albumin.
