Wet and Functional Adhesives from One-Step Aqueous Self-Assembly of Natural Amino Acids and Polyoxometalates

Coacervate Formation in Dilute Aqueous Solutions of Inorganic Molecular Clusters with Simple Divalent Countercations

We report a complex coacervate formed by a 2.5 nm-diameter, rigid uranyl peroxide molecular cluster (Li68K12(OH)20)[UO2(O2)OH]60, U6060-) and SrCl2 salt in dilute aqueous solutions, including its location in the phase diagram, composition, rheological features, and critical conditions for phase transitions. In this coacervate, the Sr2+ cations are a major building component, and the coacervate phase covers a substantial region of the phase diagram. This coacervate demonstrates features that differ from traditional coacervates formed by oppositely charged long-chain polyelectrolytes, especially in its formation mechanism, dehydration, enhancement of mechanical strength with increasing ionic strength, and the change of salt partition preference into the coacervate and supernatant phases with ionic strength.

Underwater Fabrication of Carbon Nanotube/Coacervate Composites

Soft conductive materials are of interest for a wide range of applications, but their syntheses have remained difficult. Herein, we present a convenient route for underwater fabrication of a composite made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and mussel-inspired complex coacervates. The key to success of this method is that CNTs were solubilized very effectively in protocoacervates, which are high-concentration solutions of polyelectrolytes at a pH where only one of them is charged, thereby impeding coacervate formation. Composite materials were formed by the simple injection of CNT-dispersed protocoacervate solutions into water under ambient conditions. The method is simple, fast, and ecofriendly, and composites of CNT-complex coacervate in the form of films or bulk materials were obtained. The composites demonstrated electrical conductivity and tunable mechanical properties, which depended on the concentration of polyelectrolytes and the CNT:protocoacervate ratio. Hence, the composites can be manipulated to attain diverse properties, for examples, tunable reduced modulus (15 to 32 GPa) and hardness (0.3 to 0.7 GPa) as well as an electrical conductivity of up to 4 × 103 S m-1.

A solvent-free processed low-temperature tolerant adhesive

Ultra-low temperature resistant adhesive is highly desired yet scarce for material adhesion for the potential usage in Arctic/Antarctic or outer space exploration. Here we develop a solvent-free processed low-temperature tolerant adhesive with excellent adhesion strength and organic solvent stability, wide tolerable temperature range (i.e. -196 to 55 °C), long-lasting adhesion effect ( > 60 days, -196 °C) that exceeds the classic commercial hot melt adhesives. Furthermore, combine experimental results with theoretical calculations, the strong interaction energy between polyoxometalate and polymer is the main factor for the low-temperature tolerant adhesive, possessing enhanced cohesion strength, suppressed polymer crystallization and volumetric contraction. Notably, manufacturing at scale can be easily achieved by the facile scale-up solvent-free processing, showing much potential towards practical application in Arctic/Antarctic or planetary exploration.

Supramolecular/Dynamic Covalent Design of High-Performance Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive from Natural Low-Molecular-Weight Compounds

Adhesive materials have played an essential role in the history of humanity. Natural adhesives composed of low-molecular-weight monomers have been overshadowed by modern petroleum-based glues. With the development of green economy, the demand for eco-friendly materials has increased. Herein, two natural biocompatible compounds, namely thioctic acid (TA) and malic acid (MA), are selected to prepare a high-performance pressure-sensitive adhesive poly[TA-MA]. This adhesive can be quantitatively obtained via a simple mixing and heating process. Poly[TA-MA] shows interesting and useful properties, including reversible flexibility, high elongation, and good self-healing, owing to its dynamic polymerization pattern and reversible cross-linking behavior. Poly[TA-MA] exhibits excellent adhesion performance under various extreme conditions, such as at low temperatures and in hot water. High values of shear strength (3.86 MPa), peel strength (7.90 N cm-1), loop tack (10.60 N cm-1), tensile strength (1.02 MPa), and shear resistance (1628 h) demonstrate the strong adhesive effect of poly[TA-MA]. Additionally, TA can be regenerated in the monomer forms from poly[TA-MA] with high recovery rate (>90%). Meanwhile, strong anti-bacterial behavior of poly[TA-MA] is recorded. This study not only reported a new pressure-sensitive adhesive but also fully displayed the feasibility of using natural small molecules to achieve robust surface adhesion.

Tuning the Chirality Evolution in Achiral Subnanometer Systems by Judicious Control of Molecule Interactions

Chirality evolution from molecule levels to the nanoscale in an achiral system is a fundamental issue that remains undiscovered. Here, we report the assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters into chiral subnanostructures in achiral systems by programmable single-molecule interactions. Driven by the competing binding of Ca2+ and surface ligands, POM assemblies would twist into helical nanobelts, nanorings, and nanotubes with tunable helicity. Chiral molecules can be used to differentiate the formation energies of chiral isomers and immobilize the homochiral isomer, where strong circular dichroism (CD) signals are obtained in both solutions and films. Chiral helical nanobelts can be used as circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors due to their distinct chiroptic responsivity for right and left CPL. By the fine-tuning of interactions at single-molecule levels, the morphology and CD spectra of helical assemblies can be precisely controlled, providing an atomic precision model for investigation of the structure-chirality relationship and chirality manipulation at the nanoscale.

Wetting-enhanced adhesion of photo-polymerized supramolecular adhesives for both smooth and rough surfaces

Efficient interactions between an adhesive and a substrate surface at the molecular level are the basis for the formation of robust adhesion, which substantially relies on interfacial wetting. However, strong adhesives usually improve cohesion but compromise interfacial properties. Herein, we have reported a kind of robust supramolecular adhesive based on the outstanding mobility and interfacial wettability of adhesive precursors. In situ fast photopolymerization endows supramolecular adhesives with more outstanding adhesion for both smooth and rough surfaces in air and underwater in contrast to their counterparts from thermal polymerization. In addition to their low viscosity and high monomer concentration, supramolecular adhesive precursors without any organic solvents possess well-defined hydrogen bonding interactions. These superior properties consistently contribute to the wetting of the substrate and the formation of adhesive polymers with high molecular weights. This work highlights that enhancing interfacial wetting between an adhesive and a substrate is a promising route to achieving robust adhesion.

A Giant Heterometallic Polyoxometalate Nanocluster for Enhanced Brain-Targeted Glioma Therapy

Giant heterometallic polyoxometalate (POM) clusters with precise atom structures, flexibly adjustable and abundant active sites are promising for constructing functional nanodrugs. However, current POM drugs are almost vacant in orthotopic brain tumor therapy due to the inability to effectively penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and low drug activity. Here, we designed the largest (3.0 nm × 6.0 nm) transition-metal-lanthanide co-encapsulated POM cluster {[Ce10 Ag6 (DMEA)(H2 O)27 W22 O70 ][B-α-TeW9 O33 ]9 }2 88- featuring 238 metal centers via synergistic coordination between two geometry-unrestricted Ce3+ and Ag+ linkers with tungsten-oxo cluster fragments. This POM was combined with brain-targeted peptide to prepare a brain-targeted nanodrug that could efficiently traverse BBB and target glioma cells. The Ag+ active centers in the nanodrug specifically activate reactive oxygen species to regulate the apoptosis pathway of glioma cells with a low half-maximal inhibitory concentration (5.66 μM). As the first brain-targeted POM drug, it efficiently prolongs the survival of orthotopic glioma-bearing mice.

Bioinspired Amino Acid Based Materials in Bionanotechnology: From Minimalistic Building Blocks and Assembly Mechanism to Applications

Inspired by natural hierarchical self-assembly of proteins and peptides, amino acids, as the basic building units, have been shown to self-assemble to form highly ordered structures through supramolecular interactions. The fabrication of functional biomaterials comprised of extremely simple biomolecules has gained increasing interest due to the advantages of biocompatibility, easy functionalization, and structural modularity. In particular, amino acid based assemblies have shown attractive physical characteristics for various bionanotechnology applications. Herein, we propose a review paper to summarize the design strategies as well as research advances of amino acid based supramolecular assemblies as smart functional materials. We first briefly introduce bioinspired reductionist design strategies and assembly mechanism for amino acid based molecular assembly materials through noncovalent interactions in condensed states, including self-assembly, metal ion mediated coordination assembly, and coassembly. In the following part, we provide an overview of the properties and functions of amino acid based materials toward applications in nanotechnology and biomedicine. Finally, we give an overview of the remaining challenges and future perspectives on the fabrication of amino acid based supramolecular biomaterials with desired properties. We believe that this review will promote the prosperous development of innovative bioinspired functional materials formed by minimalistic building blocks.

One-step synthesis of Janus hydrogel via heterogeneous distribution of sodium α-linoleate driven by surfactant self-aggregation

Janus adhesive hydrogels have one-sided adhesive properties and hold promising applications in the health care field. However, a simple method for synthesizing Janus hydrogels is still lacking. In this study, we introduce an innovative method to prepare Janus hydrogels by harnessing a fundamental phenomenon: the self-aggregation of surfactants at high concentrations at the water-air interface. By combining a small amount [0.8 to 3.2 weight %, relative to mass of acrylamide (AM)] of sodium α-linoleate (LAS) with AM through free radical polymerization, we have synthesized Janus adhesive hydrogels. The Janus hydrogels exhibit remarkable adhesive strength and adhesive differences, with the top side (84 J m-2) being 21 times stronger than the bottom side, also an excellent elongation rate. Through comprehensive experiments, including chemical composition, surface morphology, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we thoroughly investigate the mechanisms of the hydrogel's heterogeneous adhesion. This study presents an easy, efficient, and innovative method for preparing one-sided adhesive hydrogels.

Synthesis of robust underwater glues from common proteins via unfolding-aggregating strategy

Underwater adhesive proteins secreted by organisms greatly inspires the development of underwater glue. However, except for specific proteins such as mussel adhesive protein, barnacle cement proteins, curli protein and their related recombinant proteins, it is believed that abundant common proteins cannot be converted into underwater glue. Here, we demonstrate that unfolded common proteins exhibit high affinity to surfaces and strong internal cohesion via amyloid-like aggregation in water. Using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein, we obtain a stable unfolded protein by cleaving the disulfide bonds and maintaining the unfolded state by means of stabilizing agents such as trifluoroethanol (TFE) and urea. The diffusion of stabilizing agents into water exposes the hydrophobic residues of an unfolded protein and initiates aggregation of the unfolded protein into a solid block. A robust and stable underwater glue can thus be prepared from tens of common proteins. This strategy deciphers a general code in common proteins to construct robust underwater glue from abundant biomass.

Polyoxometalate-peptide hybrid materials: from structure-property relationships to applications

Organo-functionalisation of polyoxometalates (POMs) represents an effective approach to obtain diverse arrays of functional structures and materials, where the introduction of organic moieties into the POM molecules can dramatically change their surface chemistry, charge, polarity, and redox properties. The synergistic combination of POMs and peptides, which perform a myriad of essential roles within cellular biochemistry, including protection and transport in living organisms, leads to functional hybrid materials with unique properties. In this Perspective article, we present the principal synthetic routes to prepare and characterise POM-peptide hybrids, together with a comprehensive description of how their properties - such as redox chemistry, stereochemistry and supramolecular self-assembly - give rise to materials with relevant catalytic, adhesive, and biomedical applications. By presenting the state-of-the-art of the POM-peptide field, we show specifically how emerging chemical approaches can be harnessed to develop tailored POM-peptide materials with synergistic properties for applications in a variety of disciplines.

Probing and Manipulating Noncovalent Interactions in Functional Polymeric Systems

Noncovalent interactions, which usually feature tunable strength, reversibility, and environmental adaptability, have been recognized as driving forces in a variety of biological and chemical processes, contributing to the recognition between molecules, the formation of molecule clusters, and the establishment of complex structures of macromolecules. The marriage of noncovalent interactions and conventional covalent polymers offers the systems novel mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties, which are highly dependent on the binding mechanisms of the noncovalent interactions that can be illuminated via quantification. This review systematically discusses the nanomechanical characterization of typical noncovalent interactions in polymeric systems, mainly through direct force measurements at microscopic, nanoscopic, and molecular levels, which provide quantitative information (e.g., ranges, strengths, and dynamics) on the binding behaviors. The fundamental understandings of intermolecular and interfacial interactions are then correlated to the macroscopic performances of a series of noncovalently bonded polymers, whose functions (e.g., stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing capacity, universal adhesiveness) can be customized through the manipulation of the noncovalent interactions, providing insights into the rational design of advanced materials with applications in biomedical, energy, environmental, and other engineering fields.

Low-molecular-weight supramolecular adhesives based on non-covalent self-assembly of a small molecular gelator

Currently developed adhesives are overwhelmingly polymeric in nature. Herein, we highlight for the first time the potential of supramolecular eutectogels assembled from small molecules as robust low-molecular-weight (LMW) supramolecular adhesives in air, water and organic solvents, and under low temperatures. These supramolecular eutectogels were produced from commercial alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (C_nTAB) in emerging deep eutectic solvents (DESs), which demonstrated rapid (∼2 min), robust, and tunable adhesion to both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces at room temperature in air. Moreover, high adhesion performance was maintained even in liquid nitrogen (-196 °C), underwater, and in organic solvents. A study of the structure-property relationship of these adhesives and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations further clarified the assembly and adhesion mechanism of the C₁₂TAB molecules in DESs. Compared with traditional polymer adhesives and several existing examples of LMW supramolecular adhesives with solvent-free dry network structures, the spontaneous self-assembly of LMW gelators in versatile DESs provides a new strategy for the facile construction of high-strength supramolecular adhesives with gel network structures for a diverse range of harsh environments.

Adhesive Materials Inspired by Barnacle Underwater Adhesion: Biological Principles and Biomimetic Designs

Wet adhesion technology has potential applications in various fields, especially in the biomedical field, yet it has not been completely mastered by humans. Many aquatic organisms (e.g., mussels, sandcastle worms, and barnacles) have evolved into wet adhesion specialists with excellent underwater adhesion abilities, and mimicking their adhesion principles to engineer artificial adhesive materials offers an important avenue to address the wet adhesion issue. The crustacean barnacle secretes a proteinaceous adhesive called barnacle cement, with which they firmly attach their bodies to almost any substrate underwater. Owing to the unique chemical composition, structural property, and adhesion mechanism, barnacle cement has attracted widespread research interest as a novel model for designing biomimetic adhesive materials, with significant progress being made. To further boost the development of barnacle cement-inspired adhesive materials (BCIAMs), it is necessary to systematically summarize their design strategies and research advances. However, no relevant reviews have been published yet. In this context, we presented a systematic review for the first time. First, we introduced the underwater adhesion principles of natural barnacle cement, which lay the basis for the design of BCIAMs. Subsequently, we classified the BCIAMs into three major categories according to the different design strategies and summarized their research advances in great detail. Finally, we discussed the research challenge and future trends of this field. We believe that this review can not only improve our understanding of the molecular mechanism of barnacle underwater adhesion but also accelerate the development of barnacle-inspired wet adhesion technology.

Molecular Engineering Super-Robust Dry/Wet Adhesive with Strong Interface Bonding and Excellent Mechanical Tolerance

Despite the fact that synthetic adhesives have achieved great progress, achieving robust dry/wet adhesion under harsh operating environments is still challenging. Herein, inspired from the extraordinary adhesion mechanism of nature mussel protein adhesive, the balanced design concept of co-adhesion and interfacial adhesion is proposed to prepare one kind of novel copolymer adhesive of [poly(dopamine methacrylamide-co-methoxethyl acrylate-co-adamantane-1-carboxylic acid 2-(2-methyl-acryloyloxy)-ethyl ester)] [p(DMA-co-MEA-co-AD)], named as super-robust adhesive (SRAD). The SRAD exhibits ultra-high interface bonding strengths in air (∼7.66 MPa) and underwater (∼2.78 MPa) against an iron substrate. Especially, a greatly tough and stable adhesion strength (∼2.11 MPa) can be achieved after immersing the bonded sample in water for half a year. Furthermore, the SRAD demonstrates surprising wet bonding robustness/tolerance even encountering harsh conditions such as fluid shearing, dynamic loading, and cyclic mechanical fretting. The great advantages of SRAD, such as strong interface bonding, stable wet adhesion underwater, and good mechanical tolerance, makes it demonstrate huge application potential in engineering sealants and underwater adhesion.

Multistimuli-Responsive and Antifreeze Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Gels Based on CuNCs

Multistimuli-responsive fluorescent gelsbased small molecular gelator by supramolecular assembly, possessing excellent dynamic and reversible characteristic, have caused much concern. In this article, aggregation-induced emission-active fluorescence gels (AIE-gels) with chirality were developed by combining Cu nanoclusters (CuNCs) and natural amino acids, l-tryptophan (l-Trp) or d-Tryptophan (d-Trp). In DMSO/H₂O mixed solvents, CuNCs can self-assemble to form intertwined fibersbased nanoparticles with numerous pores by introducing Zn²⁺. Fibers as second networks of heteronetwork structures are characterized with the participation of l-Trp or d-Trp for cross-linking to reinforce mechanical strength and chiral regulation of gel networks. Aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) of CuNCs endows the gels with excellent fluorescent properties by introducing solvents and gelation process. The fluorescent gels exhibit sufficient fluorescence intensity (FI) at -20 °C to -80 °C and possess sensitive responsibility including gel-sol transition and fluorescence behavior for stimuli of mechanical force, heating, pH, H₂O₂, and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA).

Photochromic and photothermal hydrogels derived from natural amino acids and heteropoly acids

A new class of supramolecular hydrogels have been designed and synthesized via the co-assembly of basic amino acids (AAs) and heteropoly acids (HPAs) under acidic conditions. The formation of gel-like samples is identified using an inverted tube method, rheology, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that the structural integrity of the HPAs is maintained during the gelation process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrate that the anionic HPAs interact with both the protonated α-NH₂ and the protonated side groups of the basic amino acids, initiating the preferential growth of one-dimensional nanofibers. These nanofibers bundle and entangle with each other to form extended three-dimensional network structures. The resulting AA/HPA supramolecular hydrogels show clear stereoselectivity of the basic amino acids. With the decreasing enantiomeric excess of the basic amino acids, the gelation propensity of the AA/HPA complexes is found to be depressed. The co-assembled hydrogels show the UV-responsive photochromic behaviour because of the presence of HPAs. The corresponding XPS data confirm that the photochromism of the hydrogels is attributed to the intervalence charge-transfer transition resulting from the reduction of HPAs. Interestingly, the reduced HPAs within the hydrogel matrix can absorb the near-infrared (NIR) light and exhibit photo-thermal conversion properties, which elevates the bulk temperature of the AA/HPA hydrogels and induces the gel-to-sol transition. This study unveils that HPAs have unique capacity to promote the gelation of basic amino acids for the construction of supramolecular soft materials with functional features.

On-Site Supramolecular Adhesion to Wet and Soft Surfaces via Solvent Exchange

A series of poly(thioctic acid-catechol)s was prepared by supramolecular copolymerization of two low-molecular-weight monomers, thioctic acid (TA) and catechol (CA). The addition of a small amount of CA molecules significantly improved the adhesion ability of poly(TA) and transformed it into an applicable supramolecular polymer adhesive material. The robust adhesion of poly(TA-CA)s to soft surfaces was achieved by employing a hot-melt method. However, the supramolecular adhesion via the hot-melt method failed to perform in the presence of water. On-site supramolecular adhesion to wet and soft substrates was successfully realized through the solvent exchange behavior between water and the poly(TA-CA)s ethanol solution. Compared to the hot-melt method, the solvent exchange method displays various fascinating advantages and is suitable for adhesion conditions normally under the presence of water.

Bioinspired Underwater Adhesives

Underwater adhesives are in high demand in both commercial and industrial sectors. Compared with adhesives used in dry (air) environments, adhesives used for wet or submerged surfaces in aqueous environments have specific challenges in development and performance. In this review, focus is on adhesives demonstrating macroscopic adhesion to wet/underwater substrates. The current strategies are first introduced for different types of underwater adhesives, and then an overview is provided of the development and performance of underwater adhesives based on different mechanisms and strategies. Finally, the possible research directions and prospects of underwater adhesives are discussed.

Coacervate-Based Instant and Repeatable Underwater Adhesive with Anticancer and Antibacterial Properties

Underwater adhesion is a great challenge for the development of adhesives as the attractive interfacial intermolecular interactions are usually weakened by the surface hydration layer. The coacervation process of sessile organisms like marine mussels and sandcastle worms has inspired substantial research interest in the fabrication of long-lasting underwater adhesives, but they generally suffer from time-consuming curing triggered by surrounding environmental changes and cannot reserve the adhesiveness once damaged. Herein, an instant and repeatable underwater adhesive was developed based on the coacervation of tannic acid (TA) and poly(ethylene glycol)₇₇-b-poly(propylene glycol)₂₉-b-poly(ethylene glycol)₇₇ (PEG-PPG-PEG, F68), which was driven by hydrogen-bonding interaction, and the hydrophobic cores of F68 micelles offered an additional cross-linking to enhance the mechanical properties. The TA-F68 coacervates could be facilely painted on different substrates, exhibiting robust and instant underwater adhesion (with adhesion strength up to 1.1 MPa on porcine skin) and excellent repeatability (at least 1000 cycles), superior to the previously reported coacervates. Due to the biological activities of TA, the underwater adhesive displayed innate anticancer and antibacterial properties against different types of cancer cells and bacteria, showing great potential for diverse biomedical applications, such as injectable drug carriers, tissue glues, and wound dressings.

A Universal and Reversible Wet Adhesive via Straightforward Aqueous Self-Assembly of Polyethylenimine and Polyoxometalate

The excellent adhesion of mussels under wet conditions has inspired the development of numerous catechol-based wet adhesives. Nevertheless, the performance of catechol-based wet adhesive suffers from the sensitivity toward temperature, pH, or oxidation stimuli. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop non-catechol-based wet adhesives to fully recapitulate nature's dynamic function. Herein, a novel type of non-catechol-based wet adhesive is reported, which is readily formed by self-assembly of commercially available branched polyethylenimine and phosphotungstic acid in aqueous solution through the combination of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. This wet adhesive shows reversible, tunable, and strong adhesion on diverse substrates and further exhibits high efficacy in promoting biological wound healing. During the healing of the wound, the as-prepared wet adhesive also possesses inherent antimicrobial properties, thus avoiding inflammations and infections due to microorganism accumulation.

Folic Acid-Based Coacervate Leading to a Double-Sided Tape for Adhesion of Diverse Wet and Dry Substrates

Adhesives are crucial both in nature and in diversified artificial fields, and developing environment-friendly adhesives with economic procedures remains a great challenge. We report that folic acid-based coacervates can be a new category of excellent adhesives for all kinds of surfaces with long-lasting adhesiveness. Aided by the electrostatic interaction between the π-π stacked folic acid quartets and polycations, the resultant coacervates are able to interact with diversified substrates via a polyvalent hydrogen bond, coordination, and electrostatic interactions. The adhesivity to wood is superior to the strong commercial glues, but without releasing any toxic components. Upon evaporating water, the coacervate can be casted into a non-adhesive flexible self-supporting film, which restores the adhesive coacervate immediately on contacting water with original adhesive ability. In this way, the coacervate can be facilely tailored into a double-sided tape (DST), which is convenient for storage and application under ambient conditions. Given its excellent adhesive performance, release of nontoxic gases, and convenience in storage and application, the folic acid-based DST is very promising as a new adhesive material.

Robust Underwater Adhesives Based on Dynamic Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Moieties to Diverse Surfaces

Underwater adhesives (UAs) have promising applications in diverse areas. However, traditional UAs have several drawbacks such as weak and irreversible adhesion behaviors as well as poor performance in biological environments. To address these challenges, we engineered a novel synthetic adhesive based on dynamic hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, which shows very strong underwater adhesion strength (30-110 kPa) and debonding energy (20-100 J/m²) to diverse substrates. Interestingly, the UAs could also be switched reversibly and repeatedly by the dynamic exchange of hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties under alternating temperatures. We also demonstrate the versatile functions and practical value of the UAs for clinical applications as tissue sealants and hemostatic dressing in emergency rescue operations. This general and efficient strategy may be generalized to develop additional next generation UAs for many emerging technological and medical applications.

Polyelectrolyte complex templated synthesis of monodisperse, sub-100 nm porous silica nanoparticles for cancer targeted and stimuli-responsive drug delivery

Porous silica nanoparticles (PSiNPs) have long attracted interest in drug delivery research. However, conventional synthesis methods for sub-100 nm, functionalised PSiNPs typically give poor monodispersity, reproducibility, or involve complex synthetic protocols. We report a facile, reproducible, and cost-effective one-pot method for the synthesis of cancer targeting and pH responsive PSiNPs in this size range, without the need for post-synthetic modification. This was achieved by using monodisperse l-arginine (Arg)/ poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) as soft templates for silane hydrolysis and condensation. Highly uniform PSiNPs with tunable size control between 42 and 178 nm and disordered pore structure (1.1-2.7 nm) were obtained. Both PAA and Arg were retained within the PSiNPs, which enabled a high doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox) loading capacity (22% w/w) and a 4-fold increase in drug release under weakly acidic pH compared to physiological pH. The surface presentation of Arg conferred significantly higher intracellular accumulation of Arg/PAA-PSiNPs in patient-derived glioblastoma cells compared to non-tumorigenic neural progenitor cells, which effectively translated to lower IC50 values for Dox-loaded Arg/PAA-PSiNPs than non-functionalised PSiNPs. This work brings forward new insights for the development of monodisperse PSiNPs with highly desirable built-in functionalities for biomedical applications.

Adhesive Coacervates Driven by Hydrogen-Bonding Interaction

Coacervation plays a critical role in numerous biological activities such as constructing biological tissues and achieving robust wet adhesion of marine sessile organisms, which conventionally occurs when oppositely charged polyelectrolytes are mixed in aqueous solutions driven by electrostatic attraction. Here, a novel type of adhesive coacervate is reported, driven by hydrogen-bonding interactions, readily formed by mixing silicotungstic acid and nonionic polyethylene glycol in water, providing a new approach for developing coacervates from nonionic systems. The as-prepared coacervate is easily paintable underwater, show strong wet adhesion to diverse substrates, and has been successfully applied as a hemostatic agent to treat organ injuries without displaying hemolytic activity, while with inherent antimicrobial properties thus avoiding inflammations and infections due to microorganism accumulation. This work demonstrates that coacervation can occur in salt-free environments via non-electrostatic interactions, providing a new platform for engineering multifunctional coacervate materials as tissue glues, wound dressings and membrane-free cell systems.

Tunable Surface Wrinkling by a Bio-Inspired Polyamine Anion Coacervation Process that Mediates the Assembly of Polyoxometalate Nanoclusters

A bio-inspired method is used to render controlled wrinkling surface patterns on supramolecular architectures assembled from polyoxometalate (POM) clusters. It involves a polyamine-multivalent anion interaction generating positively charged coacervates, which while dictating the assembly of POM into spherical structures further facilitate an interesting surface morphogenesis with wrinkling patterns. This spontaneous surface wrinkling depends on the type of multivalent anion and the pH. As the polyamine-anion interaction becomes stronger, the wrinkles turn denser with lesser depth, which eventually undergoes post-buckling to engender a complex surface pattern. Interestingly, the order of influence exerted by different anions on the morphology follows the Hofmeister series. Moreover, the mild synthesis conditions keep the functional POM units dispersed in the sphere with a structural transformability to their lacunary form.

Beyond Charge Balance: Counter-Cations in Polyoxometalate Chemistry

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are molecular metal-oxide anions applied in energy conversion and storage, manipulation of biomolecules, catalysis, as well as materials design and assembly. Although often overlooked, the interplay of intrinsically anionic POMs with organic and inorganic cations is crucial to control POM self-assembly, stabilization, solubility, and function. Beyond simple alkali metals and ammonium, chemically diverse cations including dendrimers, polyvalent metals, metal complexes, amphiphiles, and alkaloids allow tailoring properties for known applications, and those yet to be discovered. This review provides an overview of fundamental POM-cation interactions in solution, the resulting solid-state compounds, and behavior and properties that emerge from these POM-cation interactions. We will explore how application-inspired research has exploited cation-controlled design to discover new POM materials, which in turn has led to the quest for fundamental understanding of POM-cation interactions.

Aqueous self-assembly of arginine and K8SiW11O39: fine-tuning the formation of a coacervate intended for sprayable anticorrosive coatings

Coacervates are commonly thought to be formed from the liquid-liquid phase separation of macromolecules, such as oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, proteins or peptides. Unlike conventional systems, we here show an entirely novel coacervate obtained from the self-assembly of arginine (Arg) and K₈[α-SiW₁₁O₃₉] (SiW₁₁) in water. The formation of the coacervate Arg/SiW₁₁ is confirmed by combined techniques, including turbidity, rheology, optical microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Assessment of the rheological response reveals that the complex coacervate exhibits shear thinning behaviour. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis are used to characterize the coacervate. The thermodynamic parameters of the coacervation are monitored by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), which identifies that the formation of the coacervate by mixing of Arg and SiW₁₁ is driven by a combination of entropic and enthalpic effects. The resultant coacervate shows a typical upper critical solution temperature (UCST) phenomenon, which is strongly dependent on the concentration of the species. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the coacervation could be tuned by stoichiometry and pH. A phase diagram for the complexation of Arg and SiW₁₁ thus has been constructed using turbidity measurements. Such a phase diagram is a very useful tool for the preparation of coacervates from a specific combination of Arg and SiW₁₁. Finally, the acid induced gelation of the coacervate has been explored to fabricate an anticorrosive coating to protect a copper plate from exposure to acid vapour.

Light-Switchable Polymer Adhesive Based on Photoinduced Reversible Solid-to-Liquid Transitions

The development of switchable adhesives for reversible bonding and debonding can overcome the problems associated with conventional adhesives in separating, recycling, and repairing glued surfaces. Here, a photoresponsive azobenzene-containing polymer (azopolymer) is developed for photocontrolled adhesion. The azopolymer P1 (poly(6-(4-(p-tolyldiazenyl)phenoxy)hexyl acrylate)) exhibits photoinduced reversible solid-to-liquid transitions due to trans-cis photoisomerization. Trans P1 is a solid that glues two substrates with a stiffness comparable to that of conventional adhesives. UV light induces trans-to-cis isomerization, liquefies P1, weakens the adhesion, and facilitates the separation of glued substrates. Conversely, visible light induces cis-to-trans isomerization, solidifies P1, and enhances the adhesion. P1 enables photocontrolled reversible adhesion for various substrates with different wettability, chemical compositions, and surface roughness. P1 can also be implemented in both dry and wet environments. Light can control the adhesion process with high spatiotemporal resolution when using P1 as a switchable adhesive. Photoinduced reversible solid-to-liquid transitions represent a strategy for materials recycling and automated production processes that require reversible bonding and debonding.

Functional Protein-Based Bioinspired Nanomaterials: From Coupled Proteins, Synthetic Approaches, Nanostructures to Applications

Protein-based bioinspired nanomaterials (PBNs) combines the advantage of the size, shape, and surface chemistry of nanomaterials, the morphology and functions of natural materials, and the physical and chemical properties of various proteins. Recently, there are many exciting developments on biomimetic nanomaterials using proteins for different applications including, tissue engineering, drug delivery, diagnosis and therapy, smart materials and structures, and water collection and separation. Protein-based biomaterials with high biocompatibility and biodegradability could be modified to obtain the healing effects of natural organisms after injury by mimicking the extracellular matrix. For cancer and other diseases that are difficult to cure now, new therapeutic methods involving different kinds of biomaterials are studied. The nanomaterials with surface modification, which can achieve high drug loading, can be used as drug carriers to enhance target and trigger deliveries. For environment protection and the sustainability of the world, protein-based nanomaterials are also applied for water treatment. A wide range of contaminants from natural water source, such as organic dyes, oil substances, and multiple heavy ions, could be absorbed by protein-based nanomaterials. This review summarizes the formation and application of functional PBNs, and the details of their nanostructures, the proteins involved, and the synthetic approaches are addressed.

Hierarchical Nanostructures Self-Assembled by Polyoxometalate and Alkylamine for Photocatalytic Degradation of Dye

A novel simple strategy for alkylamine-directed self-assembly of Weakley-type polyoxometalate (POM, Na₉[EuW₁₀O₃₆]·32H₂O, abbreviated to EuW₁₀) to form three-dimensional nanoflowers has been successfully developed through the ionic self-assembly (ISA) method. For comparison, different molecular weights of alkylamines including diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine, and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) were selected to construct hierarchical nanostructures. Our results revealed that the morphologies and sizes of the nanostructures could be simply controlled by varying the molecular weights and concentrations of alkylamines. The fluorescent color of EuW₁₀/TEPA nanoflowers changed compared with that of EuW₁₀ owing to the varied symmetry degree of europium coordination in EuW₁₀/TEPA nanoflowers. It is demonstrated that this effective self-assembly occurs mainly though the hydrogen bond and electrostatic interaction between EuW₁₀ and TEPA. What's more, the EuW₁₀/TEPA nanoflowers after calcining showed excellent decomposition efficiency toward methylene blue dyes. Our results further confirmed that ISA method between small molecules and POM can provide a unique "bottom-up" strategy to construct novel structures with functional properties.
