Artificial Polymerizations in Living Organisms for Biomedical Applications

Within living organisms, numerous nanomachines are constantly involved in complex polymerization processes, generating a diverse array of biomacromolecules for maintaining biological activities. Transporting artificial polymerizations from lab settings into biological contexts has expanded opportunities for understanding and managing biological events, creating novel cellular compartments, and introducing new functionalities. This review summarizes the recent advancements in artificial polymerizations, including those responding to external stimuli, internal environmental factors, and those that polymerize spontaneously. More importantly, the cutting-edge biomedical application scenarios of artificial polymerization, notably in safeguarding cells, modulating biological events, improving diagnostic performance, and facilitating therapeutic efficacy are highlighted. Finally, this review outlines the key challenges and technological obstacles that remain for polymerizations in biological organisms, as well as offers insights into potential directions for advancing their practical applications and clinical trials.

Study on confined interface electron enhanced ethanol to hydrogen conversion by Rhodopseudomonas palustris

Conjugated polymer coatings enhance bacteria with eco-friendly energy use. A new hybrid system boosts hydrogen production by Rhodopseudomonas palustris@polypyrrole (R. palustris@PPy) through interface electron transfer and hydrogel encapsulation. To maximize the output, we studied hydrogen metabolism using various techniques and found that conductive polymer modification facilitated electron transfer, affecting intracellular pathways. This technology offers enhanced green hydrogen production for sustainable energy.

Conducting Polymer-Based Gel Materials: Synthesis, Morphology, Thermal Properties, and Applications in Supercapacitors

Despite the numerous ongoing research studies in the area of conducting polymer-based electrode materials for supercapacitors, the implementation has been inadequate for commercialization. Further understanding is required for the design and synthesis of suitable materials like conducting polymer-based gels as electrode materials for supercapacitor applications. Among the polymers, conductive polymer gels (CPGs) have generated great curiosity for their use as supercapacitors, owing to their attractive qualities like integrated 3D porous nanostructures, softness features, very good conductivity, greater pseudo capacitance, and environmental friendliness. In this review, we describe the current progress on the synthesis of CPGs for supercapacitor applications along with their morphological behaviors and thermal properties. We clearly explain the synthesis approaches and related phenomena, including electrochemical approaches for supercapacitors, especially their potential applications as supercapacitors based on these materials. Focus is also given to the recent advances of CPG-based electrodes for supercapacitors, and the electrochemical performances of CP-based promising composites with CNT, graphene oxides, and metal oxides is discussed. This review may provide an extensive reference for forthcoming insights into CPG-based supercapacitors for large-scale applications.

Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes Wrapped with Charged Polysaccharides Enhance Extracellular Electron Transfer

Microbial electrochemical systems (MESs) rely on the microbes' ability to transfer charges from their anaerobic respiratory processes to electrodes through extracellular electron transfer (EET). To increase the generally low output signal in devices, advanced bioelectrical interfaces tend to augment this problem by attaching conducting nanoparticles, such as positively charged multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), to the base carbon electrode to electrostatically attract the negatively charged bacterial cell membrane. On the other hand, some reports point to the importance of the magnitude of the surface charge of functionalized single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) as well as the size of functional groups for interaction with the cell membrane, rather than their polarity. To shed light on these phenomena, in this study, we prepared and characterized well-solubilized aqueous dispersions of SWCNTs functionalized by either positively or negatively charged cellulose-derivative polymers, as well as with positively charged or neutral small molecular surfactants, and tested the electrochemical performance of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in MESs in the presence of these functionalized SWCNTs. By simple injection into the MESs, the positively charged polymeric SWCNTs attached to the base carbon felt (CF) electrode, and as fluorescence microscopy revealed, allowed bacteria to attach to these structures. As a result, EET currents continuously increased over several days of monitoring, without bacterial growth in the electrolyte. Negatively charged polymeric SWCNTs also resulted in continuously increasing EET currents and a large number of bacteria on CF, although SWCNTs did not attach to CF. In contrast, SWCNTs functionalized by small-sized surfactants led to a decrease in both currents and the amount of bacteria in the solution, presumably due to the detachment of surfactants from SWCNTs and their detrimental interaction with cells. We expect our results will help researchers in designing materials for smart bioelectrical interfaces for low-scale microbial energy harvesting, sensing, and energy conversion applications.

Microbe-material hybrids for therapeutic applications

As natural living substances, microorganisms have emerged as useful resources in medicine for creating microbe-material hybrids ranging from nano to macro dimensions. The engineering of microbe-involved nanomedicine capitalizes on the distinctive physiological attributes of microbes, particularly their intrinsic "living" properties such as hypoxia tendency and oxygen production capabilities. Exploiting these remarkable characteristics in combination with other functional materials or molecules enables synergistic enhancements that hold tremendous promise for improved drug delivery, site-specific therapy, and enhanced monitoring of treatment outcomes, presenting substantial opportunities for amplifying the efficacy of disease treatments. This comprehensive review outlines the microorganisms and microbial derivatives used in biomedicine and their specific advantages for therapeutic application. In addition, we delineate the fundamental strategies and mechanisms employed for constructing microbe-material hybrids. The diverse biomedical applications of the constructed microbe-material hybrids, encompassing bioimaging, anti-tumor, anti-bacteria, anti-inflammation and other diseases therapy are exhaustively illustrated. We also discuss the current challenges and prospects associated with the clinical translation of microbe-material hybrid platforms. Therefore, the unique versatility and potential exhibited by microbe-material hybrids position them as promising candidates for the development of next-generation nanomedicine and biomaterials with unique theranostic properties and functionalities.

Target-Triggered Aggregation of Modified E. coli for Diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer

Bacteria inherently possess the capability of quorum sensing in response to the environment. In this work, we have proposed a strategy to confer bacteria with the ability to recognize targets with quorum-sensing behavior. Meanwhile, we have successfully achieved artificial control over the target-triggered aggregation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) by modifying the bacteria surface in a new way. Furthermore, by making use of green fluorescent protein (GFP) expressed by E. coli as the output signal, the aggregation of modified E. coli can be observed with the naked eye. Therefore, via the detection of the target, MUC1, an ovarian cancer biomarker, a simple and conveniently operated method to diagnose ovarian cancer is developed in this work. Experimental results show that the developed low-background and enzyme-free amplification method enables the highly sensitive detection of MUC1, achieving a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 5.47 fM and a linear detection range spanning from 1 pM to 50 nM and 50 nM to 100 nM, respectively. Clinical samples from healthy donors and patients can give distant assay results, showing great potential for clinical applications of this method.

Newly graphene/polypyrrole (rGO/PPy) modified carbon felt as bio-cathode in bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) achieving complete denitrification

Nitrate reduction in bio-electrochemical systems (BESs) has attracted wide attention due to its low sludge yields and cost-efficiency advantages. However, the high resistance of traditional electrodes is considered to limit the denitrification performance of BESs. Herein, a new graphene/polypyrrole (rGO/PPy) modified electrode is fabricated via one-step electrodeposition and used as cathode in BES for improving nitrate removal from wastewater. The formation and morphological results support the successful formation of rGO/PPy nanohybrids and confirm the part covalent bonding of Py into GO honeycomb lattices to form a three-dimensional cross-linked spatial structure. The electrochemical tests indicate that the rGO/PPy electrode outperforms the unmodified electrode due to the 3.9-fold increase in electrochemical active surface area and 6.9-fold decrease in the charge transfer resistance (Rct). Batch denitrification activity tests demonstrate that the BES equipped with modified rGO/PPy biocathode could not only achieve the full denitrification efficiency of 100% with energy recovery (15.9 × 10-2 ± 0.14 A/m2), but also favor microbial attach and growth with improved biocompatible surface. This work provides a feasible electrochemical route to fabricate and design a high-performance bioelectrode to enhance denitrification in BESs.

Conformal and conductive biofilm-bridged artificial Z-scheme system for visible light-driven overall water splitting

Semi-artificial Z-scheme systems offer promising potential toward efficient solar-to-chemical conversion, yet sustainable and stable designs are currently lacking. Here, we developed a sustainable hybrid Z-scheme system capable for visible light-driven overall water splitting by integrating the durability of inorganic photocatalysts with the interfacial adhesion and regenerative property of bacterial biofilms. The Z-scheme configuration is fabricated by drop casting a mixture of photocatalysts onto a glass plate, followed by the growth of biofilms for conformal conductive paste through oxidative polymerization of pyrrole molecules. Notably, the system exhibited scalability indicated by consistent catalytic efficiency across various sheet areas, resistance observed by remarkable maintaining of photocatalytic efficiency across a range of background pressures, and high stability as evidenced by minimal decay of photocatalytic efficiency after 100-hour reaction. Our work thus provides a promising avenue toward sustainable and high-efficiency artificial photosynthesis, contributing to the broader goal of sustainable energy solutions.

Electromagnetic Field Drives the Bioelectrocatalysis of γ-Fe2O3-Coated Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 to Boost Extracellular Electron Transfer

The microbial hybrid system modified by magnetic nanomaterials can enhance the interfacial electron transfer and energy conversion under the stimulation of a magnetic field. However, the bioelectrocatalytic performance of a hybrid system still needs to be improved, and the mechanism of magnetic field-induced bioelectrocatalytic enhancements is still unclear. In this work, γ-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles were coated on a Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 cell surface and followed by placing in an electromagnetic field. The results showed that the electromagnetic field can greatly boost the extracellular electron transfer, and the oxidation peak current of CN32@γ-Fe2O3 increased to 2.24 times under an electromagnetic field. The enhancement mechanism is mainly due to the fact that the surface modified microorganism provides an elevated contact area for the high microbial catalytic activity of the outer cell membrane's cytochrome, while the magnetic nanoparticles provide a networked interface between the cytoplasm and the outer membrane for boosting the fast multidimensional electron transport path in the magnetic field. This work sheds fresh scientific light on the rational design of magnetic-field-coupled electroactive microorganisms and the fundamentals of an optimal interfacial structure for a fast electron transfer process toward an efficient bioenergy conversion.

Engineering extracellular electron transfer pathways of electroactive microorganisms by synthetic biology for energy and chemicals production

The excessive consumption of fossil fuels causes massive emission of CO2, leading to climate deterioration and environmental pollution. The development of substitutes and sustainable energy sources to replace fossil fuels has become a worldwide priority. Bio-electrochemical systems (BESs), employing redox reactions of electroactive microorganisms (EAMs) on electrodes to achieve a meritorious combination of biocatalysis and electrocatalysis, provide a green and sustainable alternative approach for bioremediation, CO2 fixation, and energy and chemicals production. EAMs, including exoelectrogens and electrotrophs, perform extracellular electron transfer (EET) (i.e., outward and inward EET), respectively, to exchange energy with the environment, whose rate determines the efficiency and performance of BESs. Therefore, we review the synthetic biology strategies developed in the last decade for engineering EAMs to enhance the EET rate in cell-electrode interfaces for facilitating the production of electricity energy and value-added chemicals, which include (1) progress in genetic manipulation and editing tools to achieve the efficient regulation of gene expression, knockout, and knockdown of EAMs; (2) synthetic biological engineering strategies to enhance the outward EET of exoelectrogens to anodes for electricity power production and anodic electro-fermentation (AEF) for chemicals production, including (i) broadening and strengthening substrate utilization, (ii) increasing the intracellular releasable reducing equivalents, (iii) optimizing c-type cytochrome (c-Cyts) expression and maturation, (iv) enhancing conductive nanowire biosynthesis and modification, (v) promoting electron shuttle biosynthesis, secretion, and immobilization, (vi) engineering global regulators to promote EET rate, (vii) facilitating biofilm formation, and (viii) constructing cell-material hybrids; (3) the mechanisms of inward EET, CO2 fixation pathway, and engineering strategies for improving the inward EET of electrotrophic cells for CO2 reduction and chemical production, including (i) programming metabolic pathways of electrotrophs, (ii) rewiring bioelectrical circuits for enhancing inward EET, and (iii) constructing microbial (photo)electrosynthesis by cell-material hybridization; (4) perspectives on future challenges and opportunities for engineering EET to develop highly efficient BESs for sustainable energy and chemical production. We expect that this review will provide a theoretical basis for the future development of BESs in energy harvesting, CO2 fixation, and chemical synthesis.

Examining the resistance and resilience of anode-respiring Shewanella oneidensis biohybrid using microsensors

Immobilizing electro-active microbes within polymer matrices (thereby forming biohybrids) is a promising approach to accelerate microbial attachment to electrodes and increase the biofilm robustness. However, little is known on the fine scale chemical environment that develops within the electro-active biohybrids. Herein, we develop a biohybrid by immobilizing a culture of Shewanella oneidensis MR1 in agar matrix on the surface of a graphite electrode poised at +0.25 V. The resulting bioanode (3-6 mm thick) was grown under anoxic conditions and produced a steady current of 40 μA. Oxygen and pH distribution within the biohybrid were characterized in-situ using microsensors. As Shewanella is a facultative aerobe, it will halt the current production in the presence of oxygen. Thus, in addition, we investigated the alteration of the microenvironment during and after aeration of the medium to evaluate the oxygen tolerance of the system. During aeration, oxygen was effectively consumed in the top layers of the biofilm, leaving a 400-900 μm thick anoxic zone on the anode surface, that sustained >60% of the initial current. Current production recovered to pre-oxic condition within 5 h after the aeration was stopped, showing that immobilization can promote both high resistance and resilience of the system. Despite the absence of strong buffering conditions, pH profiles indicated a maximum drop of 0.2 units across the biohybrid. Characterizing the chemical microenvironment helps to elucidate the mechanistic functioning of artificial biofilms and hold a great potential for the designing of future, more effective biohybrid electrodes.

Straightforward Synthesis of Pentagon-Embedded Expanded [11]Helicenes for Radiative Cooling Property

Two new pentagon-embedded carbo[11]helicenes have been designed and synthesized in a three-step process, which are the first example of carbo[11]helicenes through the post-functionalization of twistacene. TD-DFT analyses indicate that both of them possess high enantiomerization barriers of 42.29 kcal/mol and 40.76 kcal/mol, respectively. They emit strong red fluorescence and can be chemically oxidized into stable cationic radicals upon addition of AgSbF6 evidenced by the bathochromic-shifted absorption spectra and the appearance of electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals. In addition, such helical derivatives can be chosen as radiative cooling materials in a glass model house, and the maxima of 5.4 °C for the former and 6.5 °C for the latter are found in the comparative tests, which might be caused by the NIR reflective response.

Nanoarmor: cytoprotection for single living cells

Single cell modification or hybridization technology has become a popular direction in bioengineering in recent years, with applications in clean energy, environmental stewardship, and sustainable human development. Here, we draw attention to nanoarmor, a representative achievement of cytoprotection and functionalization technology. The fundamental principles of nanoarmor need to be studied with input from multiple disciplines, including biology, chemistry, and material science. In this review, we explain the role of nanoarmor and review progress in its applications. We also discuss three main challenges associated with its development: self-driving ability, heterojunction characteristics, and mineralization formation. Finally, we propose a preliminary classification system for nanoarmor.

Cytoprotective Metal-Phenolic Network Sporulation to Modulate Microalgal Mobility and Division

Synthetic cell exoskeletons created from abiotic materials have attracted interest in materials science and biotechnology, as they can regulate cell behavior and create new functionalities. Here, a facile strategy is reported to mimic microalgal sporulation with on-demand germination and locomotion via responsive metal-phenolic networks (MPNs). Specifically, MPNs with tunable thickness and composition are deposited on the surface of microalgae cells via one-step coordination, without any loss of cell viability or intrinsic cell photosynthetic properties. The MPN coating keeps the cells in a dormant state, but can be disassembled on-demand in response to environmental pH or chemical stimulus, thereby reviving the microalgae within 1 min. Moreover, the artificial sporulation of microalgae resulted in resistance to environmental stresses (e.g., metal ions and antibiotics) akin to the function of natural sporulation. This strategy can regulate the life cycle of complex cells, providing a synthetic strategy for designing hybrid microorganisms.

An Outer Membrane-Inspired Polymer Coating Protects and Endows Escherichia coli with Novel Functionalities

A bio-inspired membrane made of Pluronic L-121 is produced around Escherichia coli thanks to the simple co-extrusion of bacteria and polymer vesicles. The block copolymer-coated bacteria can withstand various harsh shocks, for example, temperature, pressure, osmolarity, and chemical agents. The polymer membrane also makes the bacteria resistant to enzymatic digestion and enables them to degrade toxic compounds, improving their performance as whole-cell biocatalysts. Moreover, the polymer membrane acts as an anchor layer for the surface modification of the bacteria. Being decorated with α-amylase or lysozyme, the cells are endowed with the ability to digest starch or self-predatory bacteria are created. Thus, without any genetic engineering, the phenotype of encapsulated bacteria is changed as they become sturdier and gain novel metabolic functionalities.

Multifaceted synergistic facilitation mechanism of conductive polymers in promoting selenite bioreduction and biological detoxification

Here, polypyrrole (PPY) was first used to the bioreduction of toxic selenite, while the acceleration effect and mechanism were explored. Experiment results suggested that PPY could enhance the selenite bioreduction from 0.42 to 1.04 mg/(L·h). The tests of electrochemical analysis and cytochrome c (cyt-c) content confirmed that PPY promoted the intracellular/intracellular electron transfer of Shewanella oneidensis·MR-1 in selenite bioreduction process. The enhancement of metabolic activity by PPY contributed to biological detoxification, which was manifested in the increased extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), electron transfer system activity (ETSA), membrane permeability and enzyme activity. Transcriptome analysis of DEGs, KEGG pathway enrichment and GO functional classification verified that the environmental adaptability of Shewanella oneidensis·MR-1 was enhanced with the addition of PPY. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicated that PPY promoted the biosynthesis of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), which was beneficial to reduce cell damage. Combined with the above results, a multifaceted synergistic facilitation mechanism based on "conductive cross-linking network" was elaborated from electron transfer, microbial metabolism and environmental adaptability. This study shed light the effect of conductive polymers (CPs) on selenite bioreduction and provided new insights into the bioremediation of toxic pollutants.

Exploring the Application and Prospects of Synthetic Biology in Engineered Living Materials

At the intersection of synthetic biology and materials science, engineered living materials (ELMs) exhibit unprecedented potential. Possessing unique "living" attributes, ELMs represent a significant paradigm shift in material design, showcasing self-organization, self-repair, adaptability, and evolvability, surpassing conventional synthetic materials. This review focuses on reviewing the applications of ELMs derived from bacteria, fungi, and plants in environmental remediation, eco-friendly architecture, and sustainable energy. The review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research progress and emerging design strategies for ELMs in various application fields from the perspectives of synthetic biology and materials science. In addition, the review provides valuable references for the design of novel ELMs, extending the potential applications of future ELMs. The investigation into the synergistic application possibilities amongst different species of ELMs offers beneficial reference information for researchers and practitioners in this field. Finally, future trends and development challenges of synthetic biology for ELMs in the coming years are discussed in detail.

Microwave-Excited, Antibacterial Core-Shell BaSO4/BaTi5O11@PPy Heterostructures for Rapid Treatment of S. aureus-Infected Osteomyelitis

Owing to its deep penetration capability, microwave (MW) therapy has emerged as a promising method to eradicate deep-seated acute bone infection diseases such as osteomyelitis. However, the MW thermal effect still needs to be enhanced to achieve rapid and efficient treatment of deep focal infected areas. In this work, the multi-interfacial core-shell structure barium sulfate/barium polytitanates@polypyrrole (BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy) was prepared, which exhibited enhanced MW thermal response via the well-designed multi-interfacial structure. To be specific, BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy achieved rapid temperature increases in a short period and efficient clearance of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infections under MW irradiation. After 15 min MW irradiation, the antibacterial efficacy of BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy can reach up to 99.61 ± 0.22%. Their desirable thermal production capabilities originated from enhanced dielectric loss including multiple interfacial polarization and conductivity loss. Additionally, in vitro analysis illuminated that the underlying antimicrobial mechanism was attributed to the noticeable MW thermal effect and changes in energy metabolic pathways on bacterial membrane instigated by BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy under MW irradiation. Considering remarkable antibacterial efficiency and acceptable biosafety, we envision that it has significant value in broadening the pool of desirable candidates to fight against S. aureus-infected osteomyelitis. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: : The treatment of deep bacterial infection remains challenging due to the ineffectiveness of antibiotic treatment and the susceptibility to bacterial resistance. Microwave (MW) thermal therapy (MTT) is a promising approach with remarkable penetration to centrally heat up the infected area. This study proposes to utilize the core-shell structure BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy as an MW absorber to achieve localized heating under MW radiation for MTT. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the disrupted bacterial membrane is primarily due to the localized high temperature and interrupted electron transfer chain. As a consequence, its antibacterial rate is as high as 99.61% under MW irradiation. It is shown that the BaSO₄/BaTi₅O₁₁@PPy is a promising candidate for eliminating bacterial infection in deep-seated tissues.

Flow-through laminar anodes with variable interlaminar distance to modulate the current density of urine-fed bio-electrochemical systems

Three-dimensional (3D) porous anodes used in urine-powered bio-electrochemical applications usually lead to the growth of electro-active bacteria on the outer electrode surface, due to limited microbial access to the internal structure and lack of permeation of culture medium through the entire porous architecture. In this study, we propose the use of 3D monolithic Ti4O7 porous electrodes with controlled laminar structures as microbial anodes for urine-fed bio-electrochemical systems. The interlaminar distance was tuned to modulate the anode surface areas and, thus, the volumetric current densities. To profit from the true area of the electrodes, urine feeding was performed as a continuous flow through the laminar architectures. The system was optimized according to the response surface methodology (RSM). The electrode interlaminar distance and the concentration of urine were selected as independent variables, with the volumetric current density as the output response to optimize. Maximum current densities of 5.2 kA.m-3 were produced from electrodes with 12 µm-interlaminar distance and 10 %v/v urine concentrations. The present study demonstrates the existence of a trade-off between the accesibility to the internal electrode structure and the effective usage of the surface area to maximize the volumetric current density when diluted urine is used as flowing-through feeding fuel.

Sludge source-redox mediators obtainment and availability for enhancing bioelectrogenesis and acidogenesis: Deciphering characteristics and mechanisms

Anaerobic biological treatment was regarded as one of promising options for realizing concurrent WAS reduction, stabilization and bioenergy/bioresource recycle. But the relatively low treatment efficiency limited its spreading application toward larger scale considerably in China. Aimed at such barrier, this study offered a novel enhancing strategy for achieving high-efficiency of bioenergy/bioresource recycle from WAS anaerobic treatment via improving bioelectrogenesis/acidogenesis using sludge source-redox mediators (SSRMs). SSRMs not only facilitated bioeletrogenesis with an increasing efficiency of 36% for voltage output and 39% for bioelectricity bioconversion, but also enhanced acidogenesis of WAS with a mean elevating efficiency of 37.5% of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production within 5 d Mechanistic investigations indicated that SSRMs had a potential influence on improving the protein and carbohydrate metabolisms-related genes' expression for enhancing bioelectrogenesis and acidogenesis. Moreover, SSRMs exerted roles of electrochemical "catalysts" or as terminal electron acceptors with affecting functional proteins of complexes of Ⅰ and Ⅳ in electron transfer chains for improving electron transfer efficiency. Meanwhile, the core members' abundance, microbial diversity and community distributive evenness were prompted concurrently for carrying out superior bioelectrogenesis and acidogenesis. A schematic illustration was established for demonstrating the mechanism of SSRMs for enhancing bioelectrogenesis and acidogenesis via changing microbial metabolism functions, enhancing electron transfer efficiency, and regulating functional genes' expression of functional proteins (up-regulating cytochrome c oxidase and down-regulating-NADH dehydrogenase). This study provided an effective enhancing strategy for facilitating WAS bioconversion to bioenergy/bioresource with well-process sustainability.

In Vivo Voltammetric Imaging of Metal Nanoparticle-Catalyzed Single-Cell Electron Transfer by Fermi Level-Responsive Graphene

Metal nanomaterials can facilitate microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET) in the electrochemically active biofilm. However, the role of nanomaterials/bacteria interaction in this process is still unclear. Here, we reported the single-cell voltammetric imaging of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 at the single-cell level to elucidate the metal-enhanced EET mechanism in vivo by the Fermi level-responsive graphene electrode. Quantified oxidation currents of ~20 fA were observed from single native cells and gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-coated cells in linear sweep voltammetry analysis. On the contrary, the oxidation potential was reduced by up to 100 mV after AuNP modification. It revealed the mechanism of AuNP-catalyzed direct EET decreasing the oxidation barrier between the outer membrane cytochromes and the electrode. Our method offered a promising strategy to understand the nanomaterials/bacteria interaction and guide the rational construction of EET-related microbial fuel cells.

In Situ Enhanced Yields of Microbial Nanowires: The Key Role of Environmental Stress

The conductive microbial nanowires of Geobacter sulfurreducens serve as a model for long-range extracellular electron transfer (EET), which is considered a revolutionary "green" nanomaterial in the fields of bioelectronics, renewable energy, and bioremediation. However, there is no efficient pathway to induce microorganisms to express a large amount of microbial nanowires. Here, several strategies have been used to successfully induce the expression of microbial nanowires. Microbial nanowire expression was closely related to the concentration of electron acceptors. The microbial nanowire was around 17.02 μm in length, more than 3 times compared to its own length. The graphite electrode was used as an alternative electron acceptor by G. sulfurreducens, which obtained a fast start-up time of 44 h in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Meanwhile, Fe(III) citrate-coated sugarcane carbon and biochar were prepared to test the applicability of these strategies in the actual microbial community. The unsatisfied EET efficiency between c-type cytochrome and extracellular insoluble electron receptors promoted the expression of microbial nanowires. Hence, microbial nanowires were proposed to be an effective survival strategy for G. sulfurreducens to cope with various environmental stresses. Based on this top-down strategy of artificially constructed microbial environmental stress, this study is of great significance for exploring more efficient methods to induce microbial nanowires expression.

Bimetal-organic framework-derived porous CoFe2O4 nanoparticles as biocompatible anode electrocatalysts for improving the power generation of microbial fuel cells

HYPOTHESIS

The relatively lower power density of Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), primarily resulting from weak biofilm habitation and sluggish extracellular electron transfer (EET) at the anode interface, limits their practical implementation on a large scale. To address this challenge, porous CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles could be used as anode electrocatalysts based on the following considerations: (i) the introduction of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles endows the anode with a rough surface that facilitates biofilm formation; (ii) the positively charged Co and Fe ions improve the interfacial affinity of anodes, enabling rapid immobilization and colonization of negatively bacteria; (iii) the multi-valent metal states of Co and Fe can function as electron shuttles, mediating EET process between biofilm and anode.

EXPERIMENTS

CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles prepared with a bimetal-organic framework (B-MOF) as precursor, were modified to the surface of carbon cloth as the anode of MFCs.

FINDINGS

MFCs equipped with CoFe₂O₄ anode achieved a maximum power density of 1026.68 mW m^-2, which was approximately 3.4 times higher than that of the pristine carbon cloth. Additionally, the biofilm density and viability on the anode were enhanced after CoFe₂O₄ modification. Considering the facile fabrication process and superior electrocatalytic performance, the CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles are promising electrocatalysts for high performance and cost-effective MFCs.

Water-soluble conjugated polymers for bioelectronic systems

Bioelectronics is an interdisciplinary field of research that aims to establish a synergy between electronics and biology. Contributing to a deeper understanding of bioelectronic processes and the built bioelectronic systems, a variety of new phenomena, mechanisms and concepts have been derived in the field of biology, medicine, energy, artificial intelligence science, etc. Organic semiconductors can promote the applications of bioelectronics in improving original performance and creating new features for organisms due to their excellent photoelectric and electrical properties. Recently, water-soluble conjugated polymers (WSCPs) have been employed as a class of ideal interface materials to regulate bioelectronic processes between biological systems and electronic systems, relying on their satisfying ionic conductivity, water-solubility, good biocompatibility and the additional mechanical and electrical properties. In this review, we summarize the prominent contributions of WSCPs in the aspect of the regulation of bioelectronic processes and highlight the latest advances in WSCPs for bioelectronic applications, involving biosynthetic systems, photosynthetic systems, biophotovoltaic systems, and bioelectronic devices. The challenges and outlooks of WSCPs in designing high-performance bioelectronic systems are also discussed.

Polymerization in living organisms

Vital biomacromolecules, such as RNA, DNA, polysaccharides and proteins, are synthesized inside cells via the polymerization of small biomolecules to support and multiply life. The study of polymerization reactions in living organisms is an emerging field in which the high diversity and efficiency of chemistry as well as the flexibility and ingeniousness of physiological environment are incisively and vividly embodied. Efforts have been made to design and develop in situ intra/extracellular polymerization reactions. Many important research areas, including cell surface engineering, biocompatible polymerization, cell behavior regulation, living cell imaging, targeted bacteriostasis and precise tumor therapy, have witnessed the elegant demeanour of polymerization reactions in living organisms. In this review, recent advances in polymerization in living organisms are summarized and presented according to different polymerization methods. The inspiration from biomacromolecule synthesis in nature highlights the feasibility and uniqueness of triggering living polymerization for cell-based biological applications. A series of examples of polymerization reactions in living organisms are discussed, along with their designs, mechanisms of action, and corresponding applications. The current challenges and prospects in this lifeful field are also proposed.

Engineered Living Materials For Sustainability

Recent advances in synthetic biology and materials science have given rise to a new form of materials, namely engineered living materials (ELMs), which are composed of living matter or cell communities embedded in self-regenerating matrices of their own or artificial scaffolds. Like natural materials such as bone, wood, and skin, ELMs, which possess the functional capabilities of living organisms, can grow, self-organize, and self-repair when needed. They also spontaneously perform programmed biological functions upon sensing external cues. Currently, ELMs show promise for green energy production, bioremediation, disease treatment, and fabricating advanced smart materials. This review first introduces the dynamic features of natural living systems and their potential for developing novel materials. We then summarize the recent research progress on living materials and emerging design strategies from both synthetic biology and materials science perspectives. Finally, we discuss the positive impacts of living materials on promoting sustainability and key future research directions.

Living electronics: A catalogue of engineered living electronic components

Biology leverages a range of electrical phenomena to extract and store energy, control molecular reactions and enable multicellular communication. Microbes, in particular, have evolved genetically encoded machinery enabling them to utilize the abundant redox-active molecules and minerals available on Earth, which in turn drive global-scale biogeochemical cycles. Recently, the microbial machinery enabling these redox reactions have been leveraged for interfacing cells and biomolecules with electrical circuits for biotechnological applications. Synthetic biology is allowing for the use of these machinery as components of engineered living materials with tuneable electrical properties. Herein, we review the state of such living electronic components including wires, capacitors, transistors, diodes, optoelectronic components, spin filters, sensors, logic processors, bioactuators, information storage media and methods for assembling these components into living electronic circuits.

Enhanced electricity generation and storage by nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon modification of the capacitive bioanode in microbial fuel cells

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can potentially be utilized for power generation, but their low power density and low energy storage capabilities remain major bottlenecks for their large-scale development. In this research, a simplistic nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon material (HPC-A) was developed through a one-step carbonization and activation process and was successfully hot-pressed on the carbon cloth (CC) substrate. This process fabricates capacitive bioanodes (HPC-A-CC) that can enhance electricity generation and storage in MFCs. The as-prepared HPC-A-CC anode delivered a power density of 2043.6 mW·m^-2 and a cumulative total charge (Q_m) of 426.4 ± 13.4C·m^-2 at each cycle, which was 2.1 and 34.8 times higher than that of the plain CC anode, respectively. This was a result of the hierarchical and interconnected porous structure, improved hydrophilic surface, and increased number of active centers which host the bacteria for enhanced electron transfer. Electrochemical measurements indicated the superior electrochemical activity and capacitive behavior of the HPC-A-CC anode. Furthermore, biofilm analysis revealed that the HPC-A-CC biofilm exhibited higher cell viability and a more uniform spatial distribution. These findings not only demonstrate the potential of HPC-A-CC for power enhancement in MFCs but also provide a feasible solution to the problem of power generation and demand mismatch in MFC applications.

Functional Nanomaterial-Modified Anodes in Microbial Fuel Cells: Advances and Perspectives

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising approach that could utilize microorganisms to oxidize biodegradable pollutants in wastewater and generate electrical power simultaneously. Introducing advanced anode nanomaterials is generally considered as an effective way to enhance MFC performance by increasing bacterial adhesion and facilitating extracellular electron transfer (EET). This review focuses on the key advances of recent anode modification materials, as well as the current understanding of the microbial EET process occurring at the bacteria-electrode interface. Based on the difference in combination mode of the exoelectrogens and nanomaterials, anode surface modification, hybrid biofilm construction and single-bacterial surface modification strategies are elucidated exhaustively. The inherent mechanisms may help to break through the performance output bottleneck of MFCs by rational design of EET-related nanomaterials, and lead to the widespread application of microbial electrochemical systems.

Enhanced transmembrane electron transfer in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 using gold nanoparticles for high-performance microbial fuel cells

Low efficiency of extracellular electron transfer (EET) is a major bottleneck in developing high-performance microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Herein, we construct Shewanella oneidensis MR-1@Au for the bioanode of MFCs. Through performance recovery experiments of mutants, we proved that abundant Au nanoparticles not only tightly covered the bacteria surface, but were also distributed in the periplasm and cytoplasm, and even embedded in the outer and inner membranes of the cell. These Au nanoparticles could act as electron conduits to enable highly efficient electron transfer between S. oneidensis MR-1 and electrodes. Strikingly, the maximum power density of the S. oneidensis MR-1@Au bioanode reached up to 3749 mW m-2, which was 17.4 times higher than that with the native bacteria, reaching the highest performance yet reported in MFCs using Au or Au-based nanocomposites as the anode. This work elucidates the role of Au nanoparticles in promoting transmembrane and extracellular electron transfer from the perspective of molecular biology and electrochemistry, while alleviating bottlenecks in MFC performances.

Inward-to-outward assembly of amine-functionalized carbon dots and polydopamine to Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 for high-efficiency, microbial-photoreduction of Cr(VI)

A novel photosensitized living biohybrid was fabricated by inward-to-outward assembly of amine-functionalized carbon dots (NCDs) and polydopamine (PDA) to Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and applied for high-efficiency, microbial-photoreduction of Cr(VI). Within a 72 h test period, biohybrids achieved a pronounced catalytic reduction capacity (100%) for 100 mg/L Cr(VI) under visible illumination, greatly surpassing the poor capacity (only 2.5%) displayed by the wild strain under dark conditions. Modular configurations of NCDs and PDA afforded biohybrids with a large electron flux by harvesting extracellular photoelectrons generated from illuminated NCDs and increasing reducing equivalents released from an enlarged intracellular NADH/NAD⁺ pool. Further, increased production of intracellular c-type cytochromes and extracellular flavins resulting from the modular configuration enhanced the biohybrid electron transport ability. The enhancement of electron transport was also attributed to more conductive conduits at NCDs-PDA junction interfaces. Moreover, because NCDs are highly reductive, the enhanced Cr(VI) reduction was also attributed to direct reduction by the NCDs and the direct Cr(VI) reduction by sterile NCDs-assembled biohybrid was up to 20% in the dark. Overall, a highly efficient strategy for removal/transformation of Cr(VI) by using NCD-assembled photosensitized biohybrids was proposed in this work, which greatly exceeded the performance of Cr(VI)-remediation strategies based on conventional microbial technologies.

A self-powered and drug-free diabetic wound healing patch breaking hyperglycemia and low H2O2 limitations and precisely sterilizing driven by electricity

Accelerating diabetes-related chronic wound healing is a long-sought-after goal in diabetes management. However, therapeutic strategies based on antibiotics or catalysts still face great challenges to break the limitations of antimicrobial resistance, low H2O2 and the blocking effect of bacterial biofilms on antibiotic/catalyst penetration. Herein, we reported a glucose biofuel cell-powered and drug-free antibacterial patch, which consisted of an MAF-7 protected glucose oxidase/horseradish peroxidase anode and a horseradish peroxidase cathode, for treating diabetic wounds. This self-powered patch could take high blood glucose as fuel to generate electricity and abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) in situ, synergistically regulating local hyperglycemia and breaking the limitations of insufficient ROS caused by low H2O2 levels. In particular, the electric field created by the GBFC could drive the negatively charged bacteria to adhere firmly to the electrode surface. As a result, the ROS produced in situ on the electrodes was localized to the bacteria, realizing precise sterilization. In vivo experiments confirmed that this self-powered patch enabled the wounds on diabetic mice to take a mere 10 days to eliminate inflammation and form mature skin with new hair follicles, demonstrating its great potential in treating bacteria-infected diabetic wounds.

Polymer Chemistry in Living Cells

The polymerization of biomolecules is a central operation in biology that connects molecular signals with proliferative and information-rich events in cells. As molecules arrange precisely across 3-D space, they create new functional capabilities such as catalysis and transport highways and exhibit new phase separation phenomena that fuel nonequilibrium dynamics in cells. Hence, the observed polymer chemistry manifests itself as a molecular basis leading to cellular phenotypes, expressed as a multitude of hierarchical structures found in cell biology. Although many milestone discoveries had accompanied the rise of the synthetic polymer era, fundamental studies were realized within a closed, pristine environment and that their behavior in a complex multicomponent system remains challenging and thus unexplored. From this perspective, there is a rich trove of undiscovered knowledge that awaits the polymer science community that can revolutionize understanding in the interactive nanoscale world of the living cell.In this Account, we discuss the strategies that have enabled synthetic polymer chemistry to be conducted within the cells (membrane inclusive) and to establish monomer design principles that offer spatiotemporal control of the polymerization. As reaction considerations such as monomer concentration, polymer growth dynamics, and reactivities are intertwined with the subcellular environment and transport processes, we first provide a chemical narrative of each major cellular compartment. The conditions within each compartment will therefore set the boundaries on the type of polymer chemistry that can be conducted. Both covalent and supramolecular polymerization concepts are explored separately in the context of scaffold design, polymerization mechanism, and activation. To facilitate transport into a localized subcellular space, we show that monomers can be reversibly modified by targeting groups or stimulus-responsive motifs that react within the specific compartment. Upon polymerization, we discuss the characterization of the resultant polymeric structures and how these phase-separated structures would impact biological processes such as cell cycle, metabolism, and apoptosis. As we begin to integrate cellular biochemistry with in situ polymer science, we identify landmark challenges and technological hurdles that, when overcome, would lead to invaluable discoveries in macromolecular therapeutics and biology.

Reinforcement of denitrification in a biofilm electrode reactor with immobilized polypyrrole/anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate composite cathode

In biofilm electrode reactors (BER), good nitrate removal performance can be achieved through cooperation of heterotrophic and hydrogen autotrophic denitrification under low carbon/nitrogen conditions. In this study, we proposed a more multifunctional composite cathode, which combine immobilized anthraquinone-2,6-disulphonic disodium salt (AQDS) with polypyrrole (PPy) by electrochemical polymerization-doping method. The nitrate removal performance in BER with PPy/AQDS composite cathode was obviously improved, the nitrate removal rate (4.96 mg/L·h) was almost 2.0 times higher than the control BER system, and relatively stabled nitrate removal efficiency (≥90.0%) was also achieved even as the COD/N of 2.50. Compared with the bare graphite felt, PPy/AQDS coating cathode showed much better electrocatalytic activities, which was more advantageous for in situ production of H₂ to support hydrogen autotrophic denitrification process. The PPy-bound AQDS could also act as electron intermediaries, which is beneficial to greatly promote indirect electron process between the denitrifiers and nitrate. Moreover, the PPy/AQDS composite layer formed many particles for improving the specific surface area and bio-attachment site for bacterial attachment, which was conducive for the proliferation of microorganisms and denitrification efficiency. The ratio of biofilm and electrode of PPy/AQDS biocathode was 0.32 ± 0.08, which was 2.46 times than bare electrode (0.13 ± 0.06). Furthermore, enrichment of specific denitrifiers and enhancement of denitrifying enzyme activity was obtained using PPy/AQDS treated electrode, the much higher relative abundance of Thauera of PPy/AQDS biocathode was 1.58 times to the application of bare graphite felt.

Decorated bacteria and the application in drug delivery

The use of living bacteria either as therapeutic agents or drug carriers has shown great potential in treating a multitude of intractable diseases. However, cells are often fragile to unfriendly environmental stressors and limited by inadequately therapeutic responses, leading to unwanted cell death and a decline in treatment efficacy. Surface decoration of bacteria has emerged as a simple yet useful strategy that not only confers bacteria with extra capacity to resist environmental threats but also endows them with exogenous characteristics that are neither inherent nor naturally achievable. In this review, we systematically introduce the advancements of physicochemical and biological technologies for surface modification of bacteria, especially the single-cell surface decoration strategies of individual bacteria. We highlight the recent progress on surface decoration that aims to improve the bioavailability and efficacy of therapeutic bacterial agents and also to achieve enhanced and targeted delivery of conventional drugs. The promises along with challenges of surface-decorated bacteria as drug delivery systems for applications in cancer therapy, intestinal disease treatment, bioimaging, and diagnosis are further discussed with respect to future clinical translation. This review offers an overview of the advances of decorated bacteria for drug delivery applications and would contribute to the development of the next generation of advanced bacterial-based therapies.

Biosensors Based on Bio-Functionalized Semiconducting Metal Oxides

Immobilization of biomaterials is a very important task in the development of biofuel cells and biosensors. Some semiconducting metal-oxide-based supporting materials can be used in these bioelectronics-based devices. In this article, we are reviewing some functionalization methods that are applied for the immobilization of biomaterials. The most significant attention is paid to the immobilization of biomolecules on the surface of semiconducting metal oxides. The improvement of biomaterials immobilization on metal oxides and analytical performance of biosensors by coatings based on conducting polymers, self-assembled monolayers and lipid membranes is discussed.

Modular configurations of living biomaterials incorporating nano-based artificial mediators and synthetic biology to improve bioelectrocatalytic performance: A review

Currently, the industrial application of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) that are incubated with natural electrochemically active microbes (EABs) is limited due to inefficient extracellular electron transfer (EET) by natural EABs. Notably, recent studies have identified several novel living biomaterials comprising highly efficient electron transfer systems allowing unparalleled proficiency of energy conversion. Introduction of these biomaterials into BESs could fundamentally increase their utilization for a wide range of applications. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of recent advancements in the design of living biomaterials that can be exploited to enhance bioelectrocatalytic performance. Further, modular configurations of abiotic and biotic components promise a powerful enhancement through integration of nano-based artificial mediators and synthetic biology. Herein, recent advancements in BESs are synthesized and assessed, including heterojunctions between conductive nanomaterials and EABs, in-situ hybrid self-assembly of EABs and nano-sized semiconductors, cytoprotection in biohybrids, synthetic biological modifications of EABs and electroactive biofilms. Since living biomaterials comprise a broad range of disciplines, such as molecular biology, electrochemistry and material sciences, full integration of technological advances applied in an interdisciplinary framework will greatly enhance/advance the utility and novelty of BESs. Overall, emerging fundamental knowledge concerning living biomaterials provides a powerful opportunity to markedly boost EET efficiency and facilitate the industrial application of BESs to meet global sustainability challenges/goals.

Bio-Nanohybrid Cell Based Signal Amplification System for Electrochemical Sensing

A signal amplification system for electrochemical sensing was established by bio-nanohybrid cells (BNC) based on bacterial self-assembly and biomineralization. The BNC was constructed by partially encapsulating a Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 cell with the self-biomineralized iron sulfide nanoparticles. The iron sulfide nanoparticle encapsulated BNCs showed high transmembrane electron transfer efficiency and was explored as a superior redox cycling module. Impressively, by integrating this BNC redox cycling module into the electrochemical sensing system, the output signal was amplified over 260 times compared to that without the BNC module. Uniquely, with this BNC redox cycling system, ultrasensitive detection of riboflavin with an extremely low LOD of 0.2 nM was achieved. This work demonstrated the power of BNC in the area of biosensing and provided a new possibility for the design of a whole cell redox cycling based signal amplification system.

Advancements in Bioelectricity Generation Through Nanomaterial-Modified Anode Electrodes in Microbial Fuel Cells

The use of nanotechnology in bioelectrochemical systems to recover bioelectricity and metals from waste appears to be a potentially appealing alternative to existing established procedures. This trend exactly characterizes the current renewable energy production technology. Hence, this review focuses on the improvement of the anode electrode by using different functional metal oxide-conducting polymer nanocomposites to enhance microbial fuel cell (MFC) performance. Enhancement of interfacial bioelectrocatalysis between electroactive microorganisms and hierarchical porous nanocomposite materials could enhance cost-effective bioanode materials with superior bioelectrocatalytic activity for MFCs. In this review, improvement in efficiency of MFCs by using iron oxide- and manganese oxide-based polypyrrole hybrid composites as model anode modifiers was discussed. The review also extended to discussing and covering the principles, components, power density, current density, and removal efficiencies of biofuel cell systems. In addition, this research review demonstrates the application of MFCs for renewable energy generation, wastewater treatment, and metal recovery. This is due to having their own unique working principle under mild conditions and using renewable biodegradable organic matter as a direct fuel source.

Metal-Phenolic Networks as Versatile Coating Materials for Biomedical Applications

Polyphenols are naturally derived organic compounds that have long been used as food additives, antioxidants, and adhesives owing to their intrinsic physicochemical properties. Recently, there has been growing interest in the fabrication of coordination networks based on the self-assembly of polyphenols and metal ions, termed metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), for multiple biological applications including bioimaging, drug delivery, and cell encapsulation. The as-synthesized MPN complexes feature pH responsiveness, controllable size and rigidity, and tunable permeability based on the choice of polyphenol-metal ion pairs. The aim of this Review is to introduce the physicochemical properties of MPNs, highlight their recent biological applications in cancer theranostics and single-cell encapsulation, and discuss the future utility of MPNs for biomedical applications.

Solution-Deposited and Patternable Conductive Polymer Thin-Film Electrodes for Microbial Bioelectronics

Microbial bioelectronic devices integrate naturally occurring or synthetically engineered electroactive microbes with microelectronics. These devices have a broad range of potential applications, but engineering the biotic-abiotic interface for biocompatibility, adhesion, electron transfer, and maximum surface area remains a challenge. Prior approaches to interface modification lack simple processability, the ability to pattern the materials, and/or a significant enhancement in currents. Here, a novel conductive polymer coating that significantly enhances current densities relative to unmodified electrodes in microbial bioelectronics is reported. The coating is based on a blend of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) crosslinked with poly(2-hydroxyethylacrylate) (PHEA) along with a thin polydopamine (PDA) layer for adhesion to an underlying indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. When used as an interface layer with the current-producing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, this material produces a 178-fold increase in the current density compared to unmodified electrodes, a current gain that is higher than previously reported thin-film 2D coatings and 3D conductive polymer coatings. The chemistry, morphology, and electronic properties of the coatings are characterized and the implementation of these coated electrodes for use in microbial fuel cells, multiplexed bioelectronic devices, and organic electrochemical transistor based microbial sensors are demonstrated. It is envisioned that this simple coating will advance the development of microbial bioelectronic devices.

Cell-based biocomposite engineering directed by polymers

Biological cells such as bacterial, fungal, and mammalian cells always exploit sophisticated chemistries and exquisite micro- and nano-structures to execute life activities, providing numerous templates for engineering bioactive and biomorphic materials, devices, and systems. To transform biological cells into functional biocomposites, polymer-directed cell surface engineering and intracellular functionalization have been developed over the past two decades. Polymeric materials can be easily adopted by various cells through polymer grafting or in situ hydrogelation and can successfully bridge cells with other functional materials as interfacial layers, thus achieving the manufacture of advanced biocomposites through bioaugmentation of living cells and transformation of cells into templated materials. This review article summarizes the recent progress in the design and construction of cell-based biocomposites by polymer-directed strategies. Furthermore, the applications of cell-based biocomposites in broad fields such as cell research, biomedicine, and bioenergy are discussed. Last, we provide personal perspectives on challenges and future trends in this interdisciplinary area.

Nanocell hybrids for green chemistry

Global concerns about reducing or minimizing the costs associated with toxic waste materials have driven the continuing development of green-cell-based biosynthesis methods. Inspired by the hybridization phenomenon of living organisms, recent interest has arisen in nanocell hybrids that possess multiple new functions. They have potential to propel biosynthesis into a new generation of green chemistry. This review article discusses the development of applications for nanocell hybrids in the areas of sustainable energy, clean environment, and green catalysis. Continuing advances in these hybrids will require combining knowledge from the fields of biology, physics, chemistry, material science, and engineering.

Advances in interfacial engineering for enhanced microbial extracellular electron transfer

The extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency between electroactive microbes (EAMs) and electrode is a key factor determining the development of microbial electrochemical technology (MET). Currently, the low EET efficiency of EAMs limits the application of MET in the fields of organic matter degradation, electric energy production, seawater desalination, bioremediation and biosensing. Enhancement of the interaction between EAMs and electrode by interfacial engineering methods brings bright prospects for the improvement of the EET efficiency of EAMs. In view of the research in recent years, this mini-review systematically summarizes various interfacial engineering strategies ranging from electrode surface modification to hybrid biofilm formation, then to single cell interfacial engineering and intracellular reformation for promoting the electron transfer between EAMs and electrode, focusing on the applicability and limitations of these methodologies. Finally, the possible key directions, challenges and opportunities for future interfacial engineering to strengthen the microbial EET are proposed in this mini-review.

Oxygen Vacancies-Rich Heterojunction of Ti3 C2 /BiOBr for Photo-Excited Antibacterial Textiles

Pathogenic bacteria that adhere on the surface of textiles, especially healthcare workers' uniforms, have brought severe problems, including nosocomial infection and other infectious diseases. Here, antibacterial textiles are fabricated by in situ growing oxygen vacancies (OVs) BiOBr on the surface of Ti₃ C₂ nanosheets followed by in situ polymerization of polypyrrole (ppy). The formed Schottky heterojunction containing OVs of Ti₃ C₂ /BiOBr effectively enhance the transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers, inhibit the recombination, and decrease the band gap by introducing defect level, which significantly improve the photocatalytic activity, leading to higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation. Therefore, the antibacterial efficacy of textiles reaches up to 98.64% against Staphylococcus aureus and 99.89% against Escherichia coli with the assistance of hyperthermia under light irradiation for 15 min. This work provides insights for designing photo-excited antibacterial textiles by interfacial construction based on Schottky junctions and OVs in the incorporated nanomaterials.
