Photoinduced Remote Functionalisations by Iminyl Radical Promoted C-C and C-H Bond Cleavage Cascades

Aromatization-driven deconstructive functionalization of spiro dihydroquinazolinones via dual photoredox/nickel catalysis

Aromatization-driven deconstruction and functionalization of spiro dihydroquinazolinones via dual photoredox/nickel catalysis is developed. The aromatization effect was introduced to synergistically drive unstrained cyclic C-C bond cleavage, with the aim of overcoming the ring-size limitation of nitrogen-centered radical induced deconstruction of carbocycles. Herein, we demonstrate the synergistic photoredox/nickel catalyzed deconstructive cross-coupling of spiro dihydroquinazolinones with organic halides. Remarkably, structurally diverse organic halides including aryl, alkenyl, alkynyl, and alkyl bromides were compatible for the coupling. In addition, this protocol is also characterized by its mild and redox-neutral conditions, excellent functional group compatibility, high atom economy, and easy scalability. A telescoped procedure involving condensation and ring-opening/coupling was found to be accessible. This work provides a complementary strategy to the existing radical-mediated C-C bond cleavage of unstrained carbocycles.

Photoinduced Palladium-Catalyzed Radical Heck-Type Coupling of Cyclobutanone Oxime Esters with Vinyl Arenes

A palladium-catalyzed radical Heck-type coupling reaction of cyclobutanone oxime esters with olefins under visible-light irradiation has been developed. The cyanoalkyl/Pd(I) hybrid species generated by selected ring-opening C-C bond cleavage of imino/Pd(I) species reacted smoothly with vinyl arenes, delivering the cyanoalkylation olefins under mild conditions. This elegant strategy has a broad scope and functional group tolerance. Subsequently, late-stage functionalization of bioactive molecules and synthetic transformations of the product further confirm the practicality.

I2 Catalyzed and TBHP/Ammonium-Promoted Conversion of Arylethanone to Nitriles via β-Scission of Iminyl Radicals

Herein, we report a general I2-catalyzed and TBHP/ammonium-promoted conversion of arylethanone to aromatic nitriles under air. This procedure proceeded with the β-scission of iminyl radical, which was facilitated via quenching the released alkyl radical by tert-butyl peroxyl radical leading to peroxide followed with Kornblum-DeLaMare rearrangement. A series of aryl methyl ketone and alkyl aryl ketone worked well with good functional group tolerance in high yields. As such, this metal-free procedure represents a facile, safe, green, and practical procedure in conversion of arylethanone to aromatic nitriles.

Remote functionalization reactions in steroids: discovery and application

Research published between 2001 and 2022 on the functionalization of remote positions of steroids, as well as the use of this technique in the generation of biologically active compounds has been reviewed. In the first section of the analysis established and novel methods for activation of sites deemed to be remote were reported. A series of manganese- (mainly), rhodium-, ruthenium- and osmium-centered porphyrins as catalysts in the presence of PIDA as oxidant have effected hydroxylation at C-1, -5, -6, -7, -11, -14, -15, -16, -17, -20, -24 and -25. Dioxiranes have been utilized in inserting hydroxyl groups at the 5, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 24 and 25 positions (tertiary centers for the most part). Alcohols at C-12 and -16 were oxidized further to ketones. The Schönecker oxidation, discovered and developed during the period, has revolutionized the selective functionalization at C-12 of steroids possessing a 17-keto group. In the presence of iron-centered PDP- and MCP-based catalysts, hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid, substrates tended to be hydroxylated at C-6 and -12, with further oxidation to ketones often accompanying this reaction. The hypohalite reaction, utilizing the more modern Suarez conditions (irradiation in the presence of iodine and PIDA), was reported to facilitate the insertion of a hydroxyl moiety five atoms away from an existing alcohol oxygen. Steroidal-3β-diazoacetates tend to decompose on heating with di-rhodium-centered catalysts while activating carbons four or five atoms away. Chromium- and iron-based acetates were observed to functionalize C-5 and -25. Other reactions involving ring cleavage and halogenation, ketone irradiation and α-hydroxylation of ethers were also covered. The syntheses of compounds with marked biological activity from readily available steroids is described in the second section of the study. Cyclopamine, cephalostatin-1, ritterazine B and three polyhydroxypregnanaes (pergularin, utendin and tomentogenin) were generated in sequences in which a key step required hydroxylation at C-12 using the Schönecker reaction. A crucial stage in the preparation of cortistatin A, the saundersioside core, eurysterol A, 5,6-dihydroglaucogenin C, as well as clinostatins A and B involved the functionalization of C-18 or -19 utilizing hypohalite chemistry. The synthetic route to xestobergsterol A, pavonin-4-aglycone and ouagabagenin included a transformation where ketone irradiation played a part in either producing a Δ14 or a C-19 activated steroid. A silver-catalyzed decarboxylative remote fluorination via a zwitterion-promoted 1,4-heteroaryl migration has been developed. A variety of heteroaryl-tethered benzyl fluorides have been readily synthesized with good regioselectivity under mild conditions. The zwitterion of the substrate is suggested to accelerate the 1,4-heteroaryl migration, which determines the regioselectivity of this transformation.

N-Iminopyridinium Compounds in Giese Reaction: Photoinduced Homolytic N-N and C-C Bond Cleavage for Cyanoalkyl Radical Generation

We present an innovative photoinduced cyanoalkyl radical addition methodology using N-iminopyridinium reagents derived from cyclic ketones. Mechanistic investigations reveal the association of the excited Hantzsch ester and iminopyridinium with pyridyl radical generation. The ensuing cascade involving homolytic N-N bond and C-C bond cleavage of the pyridyl radical ultimately leads to the formation of cyanoalkyl radical species, leading to diverse Giese-type products. The method showcases versatility and synthetic utility in late-stage functionalization.

Visible-light-induced synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted quinolines from o-vinylaryl isocyanides and oxime esters

A visible-light-induced radical cyclization reaction of o-vinylaryl isocyanides and oxime esters to access various 2,4-disubstituted quinolines was disclosed. Oxime esters were employed as acyl radical precursors via the carbon-carbon bond cleavage. It provided an effective way for the synthesis of 2-acyl-4-arlysubstituted quinolines under mild conditions and exhibited good functional group tolerance and substrate applicability.

Photocatalytic C-N bond construction toward high-value nitrogenous chemicals

The construction of carbon-nitrogen bonds is vital for producing versatile nitrogenous compounds for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Among developed synthetic approaches to nitrogenous chemicals, photocatalysis is particularly prominent and has become one of the emerging fields due to its unique advantages of eco-sustainable characteristics, efficient process integration, no need for high-pressure H2, and tunable synthesis methods for developing advanced photocatalytic materials. Here, the review focuses on potential photocatalytic protocols developed for the construction of robust carbon-nitrogen bonds in discrepant activation environments to produce high-value nitrogenous chemicals. The photocatalytic C-N bond construction strategies and involved reaction mechanisms are elucidated.

Visible light-mediated halogenation of organic compounds

The use of visible light and photoredox catalysis emerged as a powerful and sustainable tool for organic synthesis, showing high value for distinctly different ways of bond creation. Halogenated compounds are the cornerstone of contemporary organic synthesis: it is almost impossible to develop a route towards a pharmaceutical reagent, agrochemical, natural product, etc. without the involvement of halogen-containing intermediates. Moreover, the halogenated derivatives as final products became indispensable for drug discovery and materials science. The idea of this review is to understand and summarise the impact of visible light-promoted chemistry on halogenation and halofunctionalisation reactions.

Competition between C-C and C-H Bond Fluorination: A Continuum of Electron Transfer and Hydrogen Atom Transfer Mechanisms

In 2015, we reported a photochemical method for directed C-C bond cleavage/radical fluorination of relatively unstrained cyclic acetals using Selectfluor and catalytic 9-fluorenone. Herein, we provide a detailed mechanistic study of this reaction, during which it was discovered that the key electron transfer step proceeds through substrate oxidation from a Selectfluor-derived N-centered radical intermediate (rather than through initially suspected photoinduced electron transfer). This finding led to proof of concept for two new methodologies, demonstrating that unstrained C-C bond fluorination can also be achieved under chemical and electrochemical conditions. Moreover, as C-C and C-H bond fluorination reactions are both theoretically possible on 2-aryl-cycloalkanone acetals and would involve the same reactive intermediate, we studied the competition between single-electron transfer (SET) and apparent hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) pathways in acetal fluorination reactions using density functional theory. Finally, these analyses were applied more broadly to other classes of C-H and C-C bond fluorination reactions developed over the past decade, addressing the feasibility of SET processes masquerading as HAT in C-H fluorination literature.

Ring-Opening Fluorination of Carbo/Heterocycles and Aromatics: Construction of Complex and Diverse Fluorine-Containing Molecules

Fluorine-containing molecules have attracted much attention in medicinal, agrochemical, and materials sciences because they offer unique physical and biological properties. Therefore, many efficient fluorination reactions have been developed over the years. Recent advancements in fluorination chemistry have expanded the range of substrates, and regioselectivity/stereoselectivity control has also been achieved. Ring-opening fluorination is an efficient method to construct complex fluorine-containing molecules with diversity, starting from simple cyclic compounds. This review aims to summarize developments in ring-opening fluorination, particularly with larger-sized cyclic compounds. Fluorine introduction and bond cleavage of cyclic compounds such as carbocycles, heterocycles, and aromatics provide efficient access to fluorine-containing compounds that are difficult to be synthesized by conventional methods.

Photoinduced Tandem Cyanomethylation/Cyclization of Unsaturated Compounds: Access to Cyanomethylated 7- or 5-Membered N-Heterocycles

A cyanomethylation/cyclization of aryl acetylenes/ethylenes with bromoacetonitrile was finished in a photopromoted condition, which offers an efficient and mild protocol for the preparation of cyanomethylated 7- or 5-membered N-heterocycles with good yields. Meanwhile, trichloroacetonitrile was also compatible with this radical pathway. In addition, a variety of single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements, scaled-up operations to 1 mmol, functional group transformations of final products, light on/off experiments, and even radial inhibition studies were smoothly performed in this tandem system.

Formal γ-C(sp3)-H Activation of Ketones via Microwave-Promoted and Iminyl-Radical-Mediated 1,5-Hydrogen Atom Transfer

Microwave irradiation of O-phenyloximes triggers N-O homolysis and 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), resulting in formal γ-C-H functionalization of ketones after trapping of the radical intermediate and in situ imine hydrolysis. The Lewis acid InCl3·H2O facilitated HAT, enabling functionalization of benzylic and nonbenzylic secondary carbon atoms. Functionalization of primary carbons was feasible but afforded low yields, requiring ClCH2CO2H instead of InCl3·H2O as an additive. C-O and C-C bond formation could both be accomplished by this method.

Stereoselective Synthesis Axially Chiral Arylnitriles through Base-Induced Chirality-Relay β-Carbon Elimination of α-Hydroxyl Ketoxime Esters

We report herein a point-to-axial chirality transfer reaction of α-hydroxyl oxime esters for the synthesis of axially chiral arylnitriles. The reaction proceeds smoothly through a base-promoted retro-benzoin condensation reaction of α-hydroxyl oxime esters, where the axial chirality is created via the C-C bond cleavage based on a proper distorted conformation of the biaryl structure induced by its stereogenic carbon center.

Skeletal Transformation of Oxindoles into Quinolinones Enabled by Synergistic Copper/Iminium Catalysis

We describe a synergistic Cu/secondary amine catalysis for skeletal transformation of an oxindole core into a quinolinone skeleton, which generates several structurally new pyridine-fused quinolinones. The synergistic reactions allow expansion of a five-membered lactam ring by radical cation-triggered C-C bond cleavage and enable a further intramolecular cyclization with the aim to construct totally distinct core skeletons.

Modular synthesis of unsaturated aza-heterocycles via copper catalyzed multicomponent cascade reaction

The unsaturated aza-heterocycles such as tetrahydropyridines pose significant applications in both drug discovery and development. However, the methods to construct polyfunctionalized tetrahydropyridines are still limited. Herein, we report a modular synthesis of tetrahydropyridines via copper catalyzed multicomponent radical cascade reaction. The reaction features mild conditions and broad substrate scope. In addition, the reaction could scale up to gram scale with similar yield. A variety of 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridines with C3 and C5 substituents could be assembled from simple starting materials. More importantly, the products could serve as versatile intermediate to access various functionalized aza-heterocycles which further demonstrates its utility.

Silver-catalyzed cyclization of α-imino-oxy acids to fused tetralone derivatives

A silver-catalyzed intramolecular radical relay cyclization of α-imino-oxy acids under mild conditions has been described. This reaction offers facile access to a diverse range of fused tetralone derivatives with exquisite stereoselectivity in moderate to good yields (40-98%). Experimental studies show that the reaction undergoes a decarboxylation and acetone fragmentation/1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT)/cyclization process.

Iminologous epoxide ring-closure

The discovery of new reactions enables chemists to attain a better understanding of fundamental chemical reactivity and push the boundaries of organic synthesis. Our understanding and manipulation of high-energy states such as reactive conformations, intermediates, and transition structures contribute to this field. Herein we interrogate epoxide ring-closure by inserting the C[double bond, length as m-dash]N functionality into a well-known precursor to nucleophilic epoxide ring-closure. The synthesis of tetrasubstituted, nitrile-tethered epoxides takes place via activation of iminologous diols followed by fragmentation. Mechanistic study reveals the transformation to be stereospecific, which is consistent with the concerted nature of the epoxide ring-closure.

ε-Benzylation via Cooperative Photoredox and N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis

The ε-benzylation of γ-alkenyl-γ-oxidized enals via dual photoredox and N-heterocyclic carbene catalysis has been developed, affording the corresponding ε-benzyl-α,β-γ,δ-bisunsaturated esters in moderate to good yields with exclusive regioselectivities. The reaction is proposed via the generation of benzyl radical under photocatalysis, followed by its addition to an NHC-bound trienolate intermediate.

PdII-Catalyzed γ-C(sp3)-H (Hetero)Arylation of Ketones Enabled by Transient Directing Groups

Pd(II)-catalyzed γ-C(sp3)-H (hetero)arylation of aliphatic ketones is developed using α-amino acid as transient directing groups (TDG). A variety of aliphatic ketones were (hetero)arylated at the γ-position via a 5,6-membered fused cyclopalladation intermediate to afford the remotely arylated products in up to 88% yield. The crucial ligand effect of 2-pyridone is further enhanced by reducing the loading of acid additives. Consequentially, the improved reactivity of this catalytic system has also made possible the cyclic γ-methylene C(sp3)-H arylation of ketones. Mechanistic investigtigation and comparison to the γ-C-H arylation of aldehydes revealed a structural insight for designing site selective TDG.

Photo-Induced Ruthenium-Catalyzed Double Remote C(sp2 )-H / C(sp3 )-H Functionalizations by Radical Relay

Distal C(sp2 )-H and C(sp3 )-H functionalizations have recently emerged as step-economical tools for molecular synthesis. However, while the C(sp2 )-C(sp3 ) construction is of fundamental importance, its formation through double remote C(sp2 )-H/C(sp3 )-H activation has proven elusive. By merging the ruthenium-catalyzed meta-C(sp2 )-H functionalization with an aliphatic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process, we, herein, describe the catalyzed twofold remote C(sp2 )-H/C(sp3 )-H functionalizations via photo-induced ruthenium-mediated radical relay. Thus, meta-C(sp2 )-H arene bonds and remote C(sp3 )-H alkane bonds were activated by a single catalyst in a single operation. This process was accomplished at room temperature by visible light-notably without exogenous photocatalysts. Experimental and computational theory studies uncovered a manifold comprising ortho-C-H activation, single-electron-transfer (SET), 1,n-HAT (n=5-7) and σ-activation by means of a single ruthenium(II) catalyst.

Electrosynthesis of (hetero)aryl nitriles from α-imino-oxy acids via oxidative decarboxylation/N-O cleavage

A new method for the synthesis of (hetero)aryl nitriles via iminyl radicals has been developed through the electrochemical oxidative decarboxylation of α-imino-oxy acids. This protocol provides an efficient approach to nitriles with a broad range of functional-group tolerance under ambient conditions and can be applied for one-pot gram-scale synthesis.

γ C-H Functionalization of Amines via Triple H-Atom Transfer of a Vinyl Sulfonyl Radical Chaperone

A selective, remote desaturation has been developed to rapidly access homoallyl amines from their aliphatic precursors. The strategy employs a triple H-atom transfer (HAT) cascade, entailing (i) cobalt-catalyzed metal-HAT (MHAT), (ii) carbon-to-carbon 1,6-HAT, and (iii) Co-H regeneration via MHAT. A new class of sulfonyl radical chaperone (to rapidly access and direct remote, radical reactivity) enables remote desaturation of diverse amines, amino acids, and peptides with excellent site-, chemo-, and regioselectivity. The key, enabling C-to-C HAT step in this cascade was computationally designed to satisfy both thermodynamic (bond strength) and kinetic (polarity) requirements, and it has been probed via regioselectivity, isomerization, and competition experiments. We have also interrupted this radical transfer dehydrogenation to achieve γ-selective C-Cl, C-CN, and C-N bond formations.

Photoredox/copper cocatalyzed domino cyclization of oxime esters with TMSCN: access to antifungal active tetrasubstituted pyrazines

A photoredox/copper cocatalyzed domino cyclization of oxime esters with TMSCN has been developed. A range of structurally novel tetrasubstituted pyrazines have been obtained. This method features high bond-forming efficiency, high step economy, broad substrate scope, and gram-scale synthesis. Moreover, preliminary bioactivity evaluation of pyrazine products shows their promising antifungal activities.

Photocatalytic C(sp3) radical generation via C-H, C-C, and C-X bond cleavage

C(sp³) radicals (R˙) are of broad research interest and synthetic utility. This review collects some of the most recent advancements in photocatalytic R˙ generation and highlights representative examples in this field. Based on the key bond cleavages that generate R˙, these contributions are divided into C–H, C–C, and C–X bond cleavages. A general mechanistic scenario and key R˙-forming steps are presented and discussed in each section.

C(sp³) radicals (R˙) are of broad research interest and synthetic utility.

Synthesis of acyloin natural products by Mukaiyama hydration

The acyloin natural products are a family of bioactive compounds isolated from fungi and myxobacteria. The total synthesis of 7 members of the acyloin family was achieved via a HWE reaction followed by Mukaiyama-Isayama hydration, using novel Co(II) and Co(III) Schiff base SALPN complexes as catalysts for the key enone hydration step. Furthermore, we have shown that a mild acyloin rearrangement is possible under Mukaiyama hydration conditions, which was crucial in the success of this approach.

δ-C-H Halogenation Reactions Enabled by a Nitrogen-Centered Radical Precursor

Nitrogen-centered radicals are versatile synthetic intermediates with the ability to undergo diverse reactions such as hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), β-scission, and addition across unsaturated systems. A long-standing impediment to the wider adoption of these intermediates in synthesis has been the difficulty of their generation. Herein we disclose a new hydrazonyl carboxylic acid precursor to nitrogen-centered radicals and its application toward remote C-H fluorination and chlorination reactions of sulfonyl-protected alkyl amines via 1,5-HAT.

Ring-Opening Fluorination of Isoxazoles

A ring-opening fluorination of isoxazoles has been developed. Upon treatment of isoxazoles with an electrophilic fluorinating agent (Selectfluor), fluorination followed by deprotonation leads to tertiary fluorinated carbonyl compounds. This method features mild reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance, and a simple experimental procedure. Diverse transformations of the resulting α-fluorocyanoketones were also demonstrated, furnishing a variety of fluorinated compounds.

Remote C(sp3 )-H Acylation of Amides and Cascade Cyclization via N-Heterocyclic Carbene Organocatalysis

The direct functionalization of inert C(sp³ )-H bonds under environmentally benign catalytic conditions remains a challenging task in synthetic chemistry. Here, we report an organocatalytic remote C(sp³ )-H acylation of amides and cascade cyclization through a radical-mediated 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer mechanism using N-heterocyclic carbene as the catalyst. Notably, a diversity of nitrogen-containing substrates, including simple linear aliphatic carbamates and ortho-alkyl benzamides, can be successfully applied to this organocatalytic system. With the established protocol, over 120 examples of functionalized δ-amino ketones and isoquinolinones with diverse substituents were easily synthesized in up to 99 % yield under mild conditions. The robustness and generality of the organocatalytic strategy were further highlighted by the successful acylation of unactivated C(sp³ )-H bonds and late-stage modification of pharmaceutical molecules. Then, the asymmetric control of the radical reaction was attempted and proven feasible by using a newly designed chiral thiazolium catalyst, and moderate enantioselectivity was obtained at the current stage. Preliminary mechanistic investigations including several control reactions, KIE experiments, and computational studies shed light on the organocatalytic radical reaction mechanism.

Recent Progresses in the Preparation of Chlorinated Molecules: Electrocatalysis and Photoredox Catalysis in the Spotlight

Among halogenated molecules, those containing chlorine atoms are fundamental in many areas such as pharmaceuticals, polymers, agrochemicals and natural metabolites. Despite the fact that many reactions have been developed to install chlorine on organic molecules, most of them rely on toxic and hazardous chlorinating reagents as well as harsh conditions. In an attempt to move towards more sustainable approaches, photoredox catalysis and electrocatalysis have emerged as powerful alternatives to traditional methods. In this review, we collect the most recent and significant examples of visible-light- or current-mediated chlorination published in the last five years.

Deconstructive Insertion of Oximes into Coumarins: Modular Synthesis of Dihydrobenzofuran-Fused Pyridones

In the presence of a copper catalyst, a series of oximes undergo deconstructive insertion into coumarins to afford structurally interesting dihydrobenzofuran-fused pyridones in moderate to good yields with good functional group compatibility. The reaction likely involves a radical relay annulation, leading to the ring opening of the lactone moiety of the coumarins, and simultaneous formation of three new bonds. The investigation of photoluminescent properties reveals that several obtained compounds may have potential as fluorescent materials.

Visible-Light-Induced Dual Acylation of Alkenes for the Construction of 3-Substituted Chroman-4-ones

Heterocyclic compounds, especially oxygen-containing heterocyclic compounds, are crucial moieties in bioactive compounds and drug leads. Substituted chroman-4-ones are a kind of the most significant structural skeletons. Herein, we report a visible-light-induced dual acylation of alkenes for constructing 3-substituted chroman-4-ones, which undergoes a radical tandem cyclization reaction through carbon-carbon bond cleavage of oxime esters by a nitrogen-centered radical strategy. A series of 3-substituted chroman-4-ones were prepared with up to 86% yield.

Electrochemical Aerobic Oxidative Cleavage of (sp3)C-C(sp3)/H Bonds in Alkylarenes

An electrochemistry-promoted oxidative cleavage of (sp³)C-C(sp³)/H bonds in alkylarenes was developed. Various aryl alkanes can be smoothly converted into ketones/aldehydes under aerobic conditions using a user-friendly undivided cell setup. The features of air as oxidant, scalability, and mild conditions make them attractive in synthetic organic chemistry.

Photoinduced remote regioselective radical alkynylation of unactivated C-H bonds

A method for the remote regioselective alkynylation of unactivated C(sp³)-H bonds in diverse aliphatic amides by photogenerated amidyl radicals has been developed. The site-selectivity is dominated via a 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process of the amide. Mild reaction conditions and high regioselectivity are demonstrated in this methodology.

Recent developments in the green synthesis of biologically relevant cinnolines and phthalazines

Both cinnolines and phthalazines are heterocyclic compounds which have a wide range of biological activities and pharmacological profiles. This work represents the recent advances in the green synthesis of cinnolines and phthalazines as 1,2 and 2,3-diazanaphalenes were cited. The docking studies and mode of action for key scaffolds were also reported.

Strategies to Generate Nitrogen-centered Radicals That May Rely on Photoredox Catalysis: Development in Reaction Methodology and Applications in Organic Synthesis

For more than 70 years, nitrogen-centered radicals have been recognized as potent synthetic intermediates. This review is a survey designed for use by chemists engaged in target-oriented synthesis. This review summarizes the recent paradigm shift in access to and application of N-centered radicals enabled by visible-light photocatalysis. This shift broadens and streamlines approaches to many small molecules because visible-light photocatalysis conditions are mild. Explicit attention is paid to innovative advances in N-X bonds as radical precursors, where X = Cl, N, S, O, and H. For clarity, key mechanistic data is noted, where available. Synthetic applications and limitations are summarized to illuminate the tremendous utility of photocatalytically generated nitrogen-centered radicals.

Aryl Transfer Strategies Mediated by Photoinduced Electron Transfer

Radical aryl migrations are powerful techniques to forge new bonds in aromatic compounds. The growing popularity of photoredox catalysis has led to an influx of novel strategies to initiate and control aryl migration starting from widely available radical precursors. This review encapsulates progress in radical aryl migration enabled by photochemical methods─particularly photoredox catalysis─since 2015. Special attention is paid to descriptions of scope, mechanism, and synthetic applications of each method.
